frequently asked questions 1. GETTING TO THE HOUSE AND GETTING AROUND SHOULD I RENT A CAR? We highly recommend the excellent van service available to pick you up in San Jose and drive you out to the coast and provide transportation around town or to other locations. You’ll find the cost is less than a car rental, and quite efficient. Alternatively, you can fly with SANSSA from San Jose to Quepos, but not during the rainy season. 2. HOW AND WHERE DO I PURCHASE GROCERIES? Consistently, we hear that the house staff is second to none. While there is no specifically designated chef at the house, the house staff do an excellent job of cooking local style dinners for our guests. Groceries may be acquired in several ways. In addition to shopping yourself, our house manager, Willy Jimenez, is available to handle grocery shopping, or to accompany you to the grocery store. We recommend you contact him in advance with your list of desired groceries. 3. ARE THERE RESTAURANTS AND EATING ESTABLISHMENTS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY? Yes. There are a number of very good restaurants, most of which are a very short van ride away. Feel free to ask the house manager for recommendations or assistance with transportation. 4. HOW FAR AWAY IS THE BEACH? Manuel Antonio Beach is a short van ride from the house. The van driver can take you to the beach and pick you up at your desired time. The beach is adjacent to Manuel Antonio National Park (the most visited park in the country for its flora and fauna). 5. WHAT ARE SOME SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR OUR VISIT TO COSTA RICA? Costa Rica is an eco-tourist paradise! It would be the house manager’s pleasure to arrange any tours or activities in which you would like to participate. Among the most popular are sport fishing, touring the Manuel Antonio National Park, zip lining, white water rafting, and birding tours. 32

6. DO I NEED TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY PRIOR TO MY ARRIVAL? No. You’ll find that most shops and service providers in Costa Rica readily accept U.S. dollars, but typically nothing larger than a $20 bill. We recommend bringing a fair amount of small bills in crisp and reasonably good condition. 7. ARE CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED? Yes. Most restaurants and shops will accept credit cards; however, it’s important to contact your credit card provider to notify them know that you will be using your card in Costa Rica. 8. IS THERE INTERNET SERVICE AT THE HOUSE? Yes, the house is equipped with high speed wi-fi. 9. WILL MY CELL PHONE WORK IN COSTA RICA? Yes. Most cell phones do work in Costa Rica. We suggest you phone your provider to verify service, and/or switch to international service if necessary. 10.

IS TIPPING EXPECTED, AND HOW MUCH?

In restaurants, a 10% charge is already included in the final bill. It is recommended that should you desire to tip more, you do so in cash, giving it directly to the waiter. RECOMMENDED TIPPING RATES FOR CASA CAROLINA STAFF: 15% percent of the weekly rental rate divided among the staff as you deem appropriate.
