BEST OF SAN ANTONIO 2022 San Antonio Current offices, 915 Dallas St. Artists: Raul Rene Gonzalez and Mary Margaret Johnson | Photo by Jaime Monzon Raul Rene Gonzalez is a San Antonio-based multidisciplinary artist and Airbnb Superhost, as well as director, curator and resident artist at Clamp Light Studios & Gallery. Visit him at linktree.com/ artistraulrenegonzalez. Mary Margaret Johnson (aka @artbymoogs) was born and raised in San Antonio. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes printmaking, textiles, photography and painting. She is a resident artist at Clamp Light Studios & Gallery.
an Antonio’s public art, especially its vibrant murals and street art, reflect what we’re thinking and feeling as a city. They capture our dreams and aspirations, our pop-culture fixations and they offer glimpses of residents’ daily lives. The Current’s Best of San Antonio, or BOSA, issue provides a similar snapshot of what San Antonians are thinking. Every year, we invite residents — not to mention expats — of our colorful, ever-evolving city to vote on the restaurants, nightlife spots, businesses, landmarks and people that best embody San Antonio. At least at this moment in time. Because of that parallel, we included the creations of artists whose work graces San Antonio walls, underpasses and public spaces to guide you through this year’s BOSA issue. Perhaps the imagery can serve as a reminder that, as with art, the beauty of an individual BOSA win is sometimes in the eye of the beholder. We may agree with our fellow San Antonians’ choices, or we may be left scratching our heads. Either way, their selections provide a sense of where the city is culturally — and sometimes where we’re headed. Our aim this year was to provide the purest glimpse of what San Antonio is thinking, so we opted to let the votes speak for themselves. As with 2021’s issue, 100% of the winners were chosen by Current readers. You know what you like, after all, and we offer plenty of criticism — whether it’s around the arts, food or other subjects — during the rest of the year. So, thank you for helping tell the story of our city with your votes. Thumbing through this issue may not bring the same level of satisfaction as finishing a wall-size mural on the side of a downtown building — but at least you won’t wind up with paint all over your shoes. hen two hermanos from Mexico City arrived in San Antonio in 2014 with extensive bakery expertise, they introduced local foodies to the addictive crossover creation that is the tequila cream-filled almond croissant. That delight remains a favorite nearly a decade later, even if the Nutella-filled cruffin is the bakery’s bid for meme status. Even so, the breads that brought the owners their initial recognition are not to be overlooked. Also, as evidenced by its dual-category win, La Panadería’s lofty conchas are exceptional enough to stand out in a city full of bakeries offering the classic pan dulce. The topping has just the right sugary crunch, while the interior is delectably flaky. BEST BAKERY

Brisket is a star attraction at Smoke Shack — it gets slipped into sliders, tops the house’s rendition of a Frito pie and adorns orders of macaroni and cheese. it’s evolved into lunch-and-dinner mainstay for those seeking homestyle vittles. The family-friendly spot can be a little cacophonous given its old-school digs, but those not averse to a little noise will find the food comforting and filling, particularly its award-winning chicken fried steak. Crisp, generously portioned and smothered in thick gravy, it’s as indulgent as they come. teve McHugh is a perennial nominee for the coveted James Beard Award, and though he hasn’t yet won, fans don’t need no stinkin’ Beard badge to beat a path to Cured. As the name suggests, cured meats greet the diner at the door, and those same treasures find their way onto charcuterie platters featuring the likes of smoked duck ham and 30-day lamb salami. Smoked bockwurst can be added to the board for extra allure, but don’t stop at the charc. McHugh’s expertise extends to mains such as heritage hog poutine and, for that special splurge, a 45-day, dry-aged cowboy ribeye. In addition to a grander space and a bigger bar, many longtime fans hope there won’t be too many changes to a menu that has remained remarkably consistent over the years. It seems likely demonstrations will erupt if the enchiladas verdes de pollo y elote were to disappear, for example. Ditto the chorizo quesadillas or the parilla de tripas. ou may head to Tim’s thinking you’ll just pop in for a side of lacquered duck or a hunk of barbecue pork, but it’s almost guaranteed you’ll leave with much, much more. Surely you also need some fresh curry leaves or a few knobs of galangal while you’re there. And those live blue crabs, claws still waving, are calling your name — you just don’t know it yet. What about some jars of potent chili crisp or bottles of deep, dark soy sauce? Bags of Asian snacks are legion, as are packages of noodles made from rice, wheat, bean thread, buckwheat or sweet potato. And yes, ramen, even ramen. Go with an open mind, leave with a full shop-

ocally owned Revolución Coffee + Juice first hit the scene in 2012, winning over customers with healthy fare alongside the fresh juice and coffee promised in its name. Since then, it’s grown to three San Antonio-area locations — the latest of which opened last year at The Rim — and one in Houston. Adding to the homegrown chain’s appeal, The Rim location offers a rooftop deck for events, as well as cocktails, wine and beer. As part of that expansion, the juicer moved to in-house coffee roasting using zero-emission equipment that allows it to serve a more sustainable and eco-friendly cup of Joe. 2. rom its atmosphere evoking a turn-of-the-century Parisian brasserie to its menu of classique dishes such as gratinée Lyonnaise (French onion soup) and escargots de Bourgogne (snails in garlic butter), Mon Chou Chou offers a trip to the City of Light without the hassle of airline travel. Your vicarious tour should certainly include the sandwich au fromage raclette, in which melting cheese is shamelessly scraped tableside from a block onto a toasty baguette. Also obligatoire are plates such as duck confit and cous cous with added merguez sausages.

Good choices for antipasti include oak-roasted olives and house-made sausage with roasted grapes, but why not just go for the antipasto misto, which gives you a little of most and then some. hen news broke in the summer of 2020 that Rio Grande Valley tamale juggernaut Delia’s Tamales was coming to San Antonio, it was almost as if the world stopped for a moment. Folks who made the annual trek to Delia’s for holiday tamales can now find those same packets of goodness without leaving SA. Even though the new spot opened two summers ago, the lines around the building never seems to dwindle. While some fans say the key to Delia’s success is its corn masa, we’re sure the savory, well-balanced fillings also play a starring role.

At the same time, McKee-Rodriguez has shown his ability to be more than a naysayer. Late last year, he won enough support from fellow council members to make a filing to expand the city’s non-discrimination ordinance to apply to all private businesses with 15 or more employees, a proposal still waiting for its day in front of the full council.

Winning examples of Vox unplugged and unfiltered include pre-soundcheck vocal exercises in the bathroom and a clap back to a commenter who likened Drag Race star and Queen of the Universe judge Trixie Matel’s heavily painted face to a coloring book: “You really shouldn’t be disrespectful to people. Especially when you don’t know who they are. … That ‘coloring book’ is worth millions
of dollars. … That ‘clown’ is everything that I as an artist and businessperson aspire to be.”

an Antonio boasts a vibrant LGBTQ+ community that’s long supported the art of drag through pageants, talent competitions and club nights. But all scenes can grow stagnant and benefit from being shaken up. Upon moving to the Alamo City in 2011, Brownsville transplant Rey Lopez found the drag scene to be waning and lacking a key component that was working well in other cities — performances by touring RuPaul’s Drag Race stars. Going out on a limb, Lopez booked fan favorite Manila Luzon to perform at the bygone nightclub Old San Juan. That show was a hit and inspired Lopez to continue booking Drag Race talent, first for shows at the Silver Dollar Saloon and eventually at Heat Nightclub. More than a decade into his career as a local LGBTQ+ nightlife innovator, Lopez seems to have found his groove in the theater-like setting of the Bonham Exchange’s upstairs ballroom. All hosted by snaggletoothed camp queen and former Best of San Antonio award winner Tencha La Jefa, these shows also highlight an array of local talents cultivated by Lopez’s weekly competition Drag Me to Fame. The fun-loving local celebrity’s upcoming engagements include Thursday night showcases for Angeria Paris VanMicheals (July 28), Bosco (August 11), Pangina Heals (August 18), Maddy Morphosis (August 25) and Jinx Monsoon (September 1). 2. fter winning a $6,000 Luminaria Artist Foundation grant last year, local director and screenwriter Justin Rodriguez took the funds and produced the short film The Art of Dying, which debuted at CineFestival earlier this month. Rodriguez is currently working the festival circuit and hopes to reach more audiences with the short. The 2007 graduate of Holy Cross High School started making movies in 2016. The Art of Dying is his third short after LUSH and Glossolalia. “I was interested in film since I was a kid,” said Rodriguez, 33. “My parents were showing me R-rated movies since I was 5. I saw Terminator 2 when I was, like, 3.” Rodriguez said he considers each of his shorts better than the last, adding that he’s constantly learning. Now, he’s ready to make his first feature. “It’s going to be a psychological thriller,” he said. “I’m really excited about it, so I know I’m on the right path.”

fter winning a $10,000 Luminaria Artist Foundation grant for literary arts last year, local poet Eddie Vega (Chicharra Chorus) started putting together a book of South Texas poetry called Asina Is How We Talk. The book, in preparation for publishing, includes poems from more than 25 writers. Vega’s contribution to the collection is his poem “The Culebra Meat Market Cumbia.” Although originally from McAllen, Vega has lived in San Antonio for about 30 years, so he knows a thing or two about the chain of local stores beloved by carnivores. “There’s always cumbia playing at the Culebra Meat Market,” Vega told the Current. “I feel like dancing every time I walk in. The poem is about the experience being there.” Vega is now working on his own book of poetry, which will also serve as a kind of memoir.

here have been a lot of changes at the anchor desks of San Antonio’s television news programs over the past few years, but one of the biggest was KSAT 12 letting go of Isis Romero days after her 2021 BOSA win as best anchor. Romero, who hails from Robstown, started out in 2004 at KZTV in Corpus Christi and in 2007 took the lead as 10 p.m. anchor at a Phoenix station. Her return to Texas put her behind the anchor desk at KSAT for a decade. After nearly a year off the air, she made a much-promoted return to San Antonio television this summer at KENS 5, where her husband Phil Anaya serves as a longtime weekend anchor. She now anchors that station’s 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.

or the sake of transparency, we must point out that Julián P. Ledezma frequently does freelance work for the Current. However, as a tireless chronicler of San Antonio’s LGBTQ+ scene and the self-proclaimed “#GayestPhotographerInSATX,” it’s abundantly clear that Ledezma’s popularity transcends the shoots he does for us. He’s drawn praise for work capturing the color, vibrancy and irreverence of San Antonio’s drag scene, but his skill is equally evident in his shots of protest marches, folklórico dancers and nightclub revelers. As a day gig, Ledezma serves as a marketing specialist for the San Antonio Food Bank, an organization that has helped countless residents weather the pandemic and tough economic times. 2. long with making art about the city he loves, graphic designer Ray “Tattooedboy” Scarborough enjoys helping progressive political campaigns that inspire him. He recently designed a poster for Beto O’Rourke and presented it to the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful when he swung through San Antonio earlier this month. All proceeds made from the sale of the poster went to the O’Rourke campaign. “I guess if a Republican came to me, I would just charge them a lot of money — maybe a million dollars,” Scarborough, a graduate of Holmes High School, joked. “No, I would tell them no. I wouldn’t feel right. I have to deal with my conscience first.” Scarborough, who considers pop artist Roy Lichtenstein his hero, taught himself how to screen print during the pandemic. The retail and education spot also operates as an “all-inclusive space, open to all genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and body sizes.” This is 2022, and statements of equality are essential. In addition to offering a variety of apparel and toys, the Sexology Institute also is available to facilitate gatherings ranging from bachelorette parties to lunches to book clubs. Vinyl. The store provides a comfortable, spacious browsing experience. That’s vital because physically digging through stacks of records is a big part of the vinyl shopping experience. Customers praise the staff for being friendly and knowledgeable — qualities that can be hard to find in tandem at record stores. This year, Southtown Vinyl even unseated long-running champs Hogwild Records in this Best of San Antonio category. If that’s not enough to lure vinyl fiends, there’s a Daft Punk mural on the side of the building. Hard to go wrong.

ertified “Master Reuser” Mary Elizabeth Cantu has spent more than a decade developing Spare Parts — a sustainability-focused nonprofit she launched partly in response to statewide budget cuts in arts education. While Cantu has been rightfully applauded over the years for collecting and distributing thousands of pounds of donated art supplies to educators and classrooms in need, she’d long dreamt of a permanent home for Spare Parts. That dream became a reality in 2020 when she opened the Spare Parts Center for Creative Reuse. Dedicated to advancing “reuse and sustainability through creativity and the arts,” the shop isn’t your run-of-the-mill thrift store. Instead, it serves as a repository for pre-owned creative materials, making it a goldmine for crafters and makers of all ages. In addition to providing eco-friendly design inspiration at bargain basement prices, Spare Parts is a worthy destination for unwanted fabric, jewelry, painting and printmak-
ing supplies. Donations are accepted by appointment only. A testament to its mission, the shop diverted more 20,000 pounds of materials from area landfills last year alone. 2. lthough not an art gallery in the traditional sense, Brick brims with all flavors of visual expression. Billed as a “blank canvas where your ideas and vision will come alive,” the warehouse-style space in the Blue Star Arts Complex lights up on the regular for DIY pop-ups, live music, burlesque performances, even life-drawing sessions set to DJ beats. An adaptable, approachable location that’s affordable for creatives to rent, Brick has hosted upward of 4,000 events since its inception in 2014. As such, the venue is anything but predictable — save for its signature Sunday Art Market. A beloved Sunday Funday tradition for San Antonio culture seekers, the long-running market brings together a broad assortment of local artists, crafters and makers in a convivial atmosphere complete with a bar. 2. Beyond that, the park houses an array of eateries and drinkeries including Box Street Social, CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery, Lick Honest Ice Creams and Dough Pizzeria Napoletana. Hemisfair’s Yanaguana Garden, the park’s 4.1-acre playground, was opened to the public in 2015. he Alamo Drafthouse theater chain endured tough times during the pandemic, but it clearly hasn’t lost its appeal for San Antonio moviegoers. The Austin-based company filed for
bankruptcy protection in March 2021 and permanently closed its Westlakes location a month later. Still, its Park North location is going strong, welcoming back many of the patrons who had stayed away as the COVID-19 crisis was at its worst. In addition to its pre-show reels featuring cheesy movie clips and periodic revival screenings and fests, the theater offers eight auditoriums and boasts 35mm film and digital projection/3D capabilities. A matinee movie ticket runs $8.50. Much of Drafthouse’s appeal comes from the ability to nosh and drink during the movies. Try the Royale with Cheese and a Mexican Vanilla Shake. 2. Instead, you’ll find San Antonio artist Alan Calvo’s exuberant Selena mural functioning as a candy-colored backdrop. One of two murals Calvo painted at the site using an old-school gridding method — the other being Postcard of San Antonio — his Selena depicts the Queen of Tejano donning her iconic purple jumpsuit and belting out a tune, perhaps “Como la Flor”? As Calvo explained during a recent interview with the Texas Public Radio program Fronteras, he grew up in the orbit of Selena and other Tejano stars due to his late father Alberto “Alegre” Calvo’s role as a beloved Spanish-language radio personality. “It’s a part of my life,” the visual artist told TPR’s Norma Martinez. Speaking about the vibrant Aztec imagery and symbols that light up the mural’s background, Calvo continued, “Basically what I’m trying to do is inspire the up-and-coming generations

here’s a reason San Pedro Springs Park keeps winning this category: it’s just that good. This public pool stands
apart from the rest for its amenities, natural setting and rich history stretching back to the 18th century. Built out of a lakebed, the spacious, spring-fed pool is only around five feet deep, yet it remains surprisingly cool in the brutal heat due to ample shade from nearby Cypress trees. Barbecue grills are also available for groups looking to enjoy a poolside cookout. The pool had a shorter swim season this year, only opening on July 3, but we’re guessing plenty of residents will make time to visit before summer starts to fade. 2. T
he Ghost Tracks have long reigned as San Antonio’s favorite urban legend, and handily win this category year after year. Perhaps it’s because — unlike local legends like the Donkey Lady and La Llorona — you can go check them out for yourself. Used to be, you could throw your car in neutral on the railroad tracks at 2902 Shane Road and feel an invisible push moving you forward and out of danger. Lore attributed this to the tiny hands of ghost
Julian P. Ledezma
children, who died when their school bus was hit by an oncoming train in the early 1900s. The truth is that the force moving your car was just gravity — the tracks simply had a slant which allowed vehicles to glide forward when in neutral. The trick hasn’t even worked since 2018, because Union Pacific leveled the elevation when it added a second track. That hasn’t stopped San Antonians from clinging to their favorite urban legend, though. 2. La Llorona 3. BEST BAR/DANCE CLUB/ DRINK SPECIALS/GAY BAR

f Pose emcee Pray Tell, immortalized by Billy Porter, was tasked with distilling the Bonham Exchange into a single ballroom category, he might come up with something along the lines of “Gay Disco with a Side of Historical Realness.” Although Porter isn’t among the stars who have graced the multilevel downtown club over the decades, he’d easily find something to love here. For starters, the San Antonio landmark is housed in a former German athletic club built in 1891 — if only walls could talk, honey. After passing through its stately entrance, the grand hallway that leads to the main dance floor simplyscreams for a dramatic runway strut. And around almost any corner, you’ll find your way to a bar slinging budget cocktails to a wildly mixed crowd of revelers. While all walks come here to dance — to trash disco and club bangers that span the eras — theBonham also boasts a lowkey back patio that’s ideal for mingling and a wraparound balcony with top-notch views of all the dance-floor action. Recently treated to a COVID-era face lift, the venue’s stately upstairs
ballroom is looking mighty fine. It also regularly welcomes RuPaul’s Drag Race stars and local performers alike to a storied stage that’s hosted icons ranging from Iggy Pop to Tina Turner. BEST BAR

he appeal of the indoor-outdoor bar atop the Thompson Hotel on San Antonio’s River Walk may primarily come down to its view, especially at night, when the bar dims and the city comes alive with lights. ess than a year after its opening, this veteran-owned brewery near the Pearl complex has already made a big splash with fans. Man Overboard keeps as many as 12 beers on draft along with a limited selection of seltzers, which is quite a feat on a three-barrel brewing system. Its beer styles run the gamut but lean heavily toward Belgian and American favorites. Some of the brews are named after the owners, but in keeping with its vet-owned status, nautical and naval themes dominate. For example, the Big Stick brown ale derives its moniker from a nickname for the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. 2. he Mexican hand-shaken margarita with Hornitos Reposado is an oft-ordered libation at Southtown favorite Rosario’s, though we suggest branching out every so often with a jalapeño or watermelon mint variation, just to keep things interesting. The Mexican eatery also has a hold on the preparation of a classic michelada — their take on the quintessential beer cocktail is equal parts savory, spicy and refreshing. f your tastes run to indie, punk, extreme metal, hip-hop or anything slightly off the beaten musical path, there’s a good chance you have hit up a show at Paper Tiger. And, to be sure, the venue has hosted some legendary ones. The venue includes two stages — a main room is mostly reserved for shows featuring larger and mid-sized touring acts, while a smaller one serves as a showcase for up-and-comers or local acts. The courtyard, equipped with its own bar and picnic tables, offers plenty of room to step out for a breather, a little conversation or to stand around and pointedly ignore opening bands. ar Loretta’s owners arrived in King William full of New York savvy and immediately elected to temper it with South Texas spice and swagger. Accordingly, the booze list offers mezcals from artisanal producers such as Vago, El Rey Campero and Ilegal. The tequilas on offer include big guns such as Don Julio 1942 and Fortaleza Reposado. There are even uncommon agave offshoots such as bacanora and raicilla for those with an adventurous palate. Beyond the extensive bar offerings, Loretta’s stylishly comfortable ambiance lends itself to three-course dinners, date nights or even casual happy-hour outings. CHARLIE NAYLOR CAMPUS
Rise Recovery’s new 22,000 square-foot campus is the next step in changing how we address substance use disorder for our San Antonio youth, young adults and family members, by enhancing healing, eliminating shame and eliciting safety, privacy, respect and hope. The Charlie Naylor Campus includes the Harvey E. Najim Youth Center, specifically serving youth aged 12-17 in need of substance use recovery support and houses Rise Inspire Academy, the first and only recovery high school in San Antonio. The campus also includes the Mays Family Center, which serves young adults aged 18-35 struggling with the effects of substance use and family members in need of support through the recovery process. This initiative ensures that Rise Recovery will continue to save and transform lives, restore families, and change the paradigm of drug and alcohol recovery in San Antonio for years to come. working in dentistry because it’s one of the few medical fields where same-day pain relief is possible. “It’s really humbling to know that I have the ability to help people in that way,” she said. “It’s also really amazing to be able to give people full smiles or teeth to function with, which is really life changing.” Last year, Tapangan exported her capacity to change lives by traveling to the Dominican Republic to provide free implants for patients. She’s a member of the American Dental Association and Texas Dental Association, among other recognized dentistry organizations. “It’s a beautiful practice,” she said. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

t was always a dream of hairstylist Damian Gonzales to open his own business. While he had experience working at other area salons, he
wanted to manage and teach his own team. So, in 2018, he opened Look Salon. “It’s something I always want to do, and I realized it was time,” said Gonzales, 44. “I love making the clients happy on a day-to-day basis.” Look’s two “big-ticket items” are balayage and hair extensions, the former a technique where a stylist hand-paints highlights onto hair to create a natural gradation of lightness. Gonzales considers it an art form. “It’s like you’re painting a canvas,” he said. A 1996 graduate of South San West Campus High School, Gonzales said stylists — besides knowing how to style hair — should bring a terrific personality to the job. That combination of know-how and personality may explain why he’s booked six to eight weeks in advance. “You get to know people very well,” he said. “You become friends with most of them.” 2. he San Antonio heat can be brutal, so it makes sense that folks here would be particular about whom they call to keep their AC in tip-top shape. Locally based Caliente has racked up plenty of five-star reviews, which praise both the company’s affordability and attention to service. Much of the praise also goes to the company’s work crews for arriving in a timely manner, because — let’s face it — spending any time in the Alamo City with an inoperable AC just isn’t an option.

espite the challenges of opening a nail salon soon after the pandemic reached U.S. shores in 2020, owner GG Christopher said the past two years have been a positive experience. Her creativity and love for nail art drove her to opening the business. “Even as a kid, I’ve always been artistic,” said Christopher, 35. “But I stopped for a few years, and then didn’t start drawing again until I started drawing on nails.” Some of her most elaborate creations include nails with glitter, gems and customized art. She even painted the characters from the Toy Story franchise on one client’s nails. “Anything colorful!” Christopher said. Last year, Christopher, who attended John Jay High School, earned a certificate to become a certified master pedicurist. Her favorite part of her job as a nail technician is helping people with their nail health. “That part brings me a lot of joy. I love seeing the transformation.” 2. SAN ANTONIO FILM FESTIVAL
San Antonio Film Festival founder and executive director Adam Rocha and his army of interns really wanted to get Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) down to the Alamo City for the 28th annual fest, but as of press time, they have not yet heard from the Uvalde native. They did, however, send him a funny, five-minute video encouraging him to make an appearance. In the video, the SAFILM crew determine that if they were unable to get the star to stop by, they would have to hire a McConaughey impersonator instead. The short features a handful of wannabes McConaugheys (McConnabes?) doing questionable impressions from the actor’s projects, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Interstellar, True Detective and Dazed and Confused. “Say, man. You going to the San Antonio Film Festival?” one of the actors asks during his audition. “Be a lot cooler if you did.” The real McConaughey might not be present for the festival, but there will be plenty of movies to keep people entertained over the six-day event. Some of the titles attendees can expect to see in their film catalogs this year include Goldilocks and the Glorious Losers, The Man Behind the Camera and Kung Fu Girl. “SAFILM continues to build our growing reputation as a world leader in cinema,” Rocha said. “Our mission clearly states that we serve as an accessible and inclusive platform for artists in the category of cinema and provide cinematic culture to a diverse audience.” Visit SAFILM.com for a full lineup of films screening this year. $5.99-$149.99, various times, Radius Center, 106 Auditorium Circle #120, (210) 227-8111, safilm.com. — Kiko Martinez
