We got a lot of responses to Violet Ikonomova’s story about Hakim Littleton, the 20-year-old man who was killed by Detroit Police after he shot at them in July.

This is sad. I don’t want anyone to die especially so young but unfortunately when you play stupid games you win stupid prizes. —Larry Smashey, Facebook

Only those invested in Black folks or who have any empathy will take the time to read the article. The piece doesn’t excuse or justify Hakim Littleton’s wrongdoings. But it does explain the circumstances regarding how he got there. (And those circumstances are very familiar.) Privilege means not having to personally deal with (or think about) the issues and circumstances Hakim had to deal with. — Stephen Harvey, Facebook

Apparently nobody read the article. Let’s be honest, there aren’t a lot of opportunities for young Black men in the city and it’s very easy to turn to crime just to get by. Once you get in the system its an endless cycle. When I was his age I could have easily ended up in his situation after dropping out of college but I ended up joining the military just to get away and experience something beyond the eventual dead end of the streets. —Marcus White, Facebook
