expands, illicit marijuana dealers are having a tough time maintaining their customer base. With lower prices and thousands of new products, underground dealers are finding it challenging to compete against the regulated market.

Licensed dispensaries and online retailers continue to open across the state, giving consumers legal avenues to purchase cannabis and reduce their reliance on illicit sources.

The legal market also has numerous regulations that ensure safety and accountability, giving buyers faith that the products they are purchasing are free from harmful contaminants and

accurately labeled with information on potency and strain.

Underneath large grow lights in his basement, Nick is competing with a billion-dollar industry. He has nowhere near the resources that corporate growers have, but he has something most of them don’t — more than 20 years of experience growing high-quality flower.

Nick’s marijuana is dense, pungent, and covered in what are colloquially called crystals, or trichomes. He primarily grows three strains — an indica, sativa, and hybrid, and his customers know they are getting consistently high-quality marijuana.

SHUTTERSTOCK

Nick has grown a loyal customer base that values his knowledge, reliability, and discretion. He began selling marijuana because he has a genuine passion for cannabis and its potential to heal and provide relief and relaxation.

He primarily sells by the ounce, but some of his customers only want a fraction of that — eighths and quarters.

Nick says he has cut his prices by as much as a third to compete with the regulated industry, but he doesn’t rely on the money to survive.

“I’d be lying if I said corporate weed hasn’t hurt me,” Nick says. “It has. But people know they can trust me. They know my stuff is better than 95% of what they find in a store.”

Nick says he still has roughly the same number of customers he had before adult-use cannabis became legal, and he doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.

“People like what they like,” he says. “If you like going to a store to get your weed, go to the store. You aren’t hurting my feelings.”

For some underground marijuana dealers, the prospect of operating a legal cannabis dispensary is alluring because selling weed illegally can be risky and dangerous.

When Michigan voters approved the sale of medicinal cannabis in 2008, Randy saw a way out of the shadows. Since graduating from college, he had grown high quality marijuana in his garage in the Detroit suburbs. But he became worried that the pungent smell wafting from his garage would get him busted.

After medical marijuana became legal, Randy became a caregiver, which gave him the opportunity to grow up to 12 plants per patient. He also sold some of his flower to medical cannabis dispensaries, but the sales were unpredictable and often left him with a surplus.

While not technically legal, Randy sold much of his marijuana to other medical cannabis cardholders, and he had a license to grow in case police came knocking.

When recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan, Randy began exploring ways to become a legal cannabis entrepreneur. He had a modest amount of money saved from his weed sales and certainly had the expertise.

But he quickly learned that the journey to becoming legal was laborious and expensive. Since marijuana remains illegal on the federal level, banks are prohibited from issuing loans for cannabis businesses.

Randy says it would cost tens of thousands of dollars for a marijuana license, a building for a dispensary, and an attorney to help navigate local ordinances and zoning laws.

“I really wanted to become legal, but there’s no way I could afford it,” Randy says. “You have to have a lot of money upfront.”

For the foreseeable future, Randy plans to stay underground, selling marijuana to his shrinking customer base.

He has another job and doesn’t depend on selling weed to survive.

“I’m lucky this isn’t my only source of revenue,” Randy says.

THC Seltzers (WYNK)

A number of THC-infused beverages have entered the Michigan market this summer, including WYNK, which boasts being the most widely distributed THC seltzer in the U.S. The zero-calorie seltzers have no sugar and are made with a 1:1 ratio of 2.5mg THC and CBD. Because WYNK is made with hemp-derived THC, you don’t have to buy them in dispensaries — they’re even available for online ordering. Take your high to the next level by experiencing nature

Michigan is fucking beautiful. We are blessed to have the Great Lakes, Detroit River, and the forests of the Upper Peninsula in our own backyards. Of course, you can appreciate these waterfalls, lakes, and dunes when you’re not high, but smoking a fatty from a hammock surrounded by trees and lakes makes us feel more grounded. So here are our picks for the best places to become one with Michigan’s sprawling nature when you’re high. (We shouldn’t have to say this but use common sense when you visit these spots and don’t drive while high. Don’t be a jerk with your ashes either.)

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes

For Detroiters, Belle Isle is a sanctuary where they can find reprieve without ever leaving the city. Just be careful if you’re posting any videos on social media that you don’t get roaming charges from Canada with it being so close (trust us). Belle Isle is a gem whether you want to walk, picnic, kayak, or just lay in the grass.

of the universe. A trip to Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City feels like visiting an alien planet and can be combined with a stop at McGulpin Point Lighthouse where you can (potentially) catch the northern lights.

North Manitou Island

To withdraw from humanity there’s the remote North Manitou Island off Lake Michigan. This uninhabited island has been left to nature and has 15,000 acres of wilderness. There are no shops or restaurants so be sure to bring food, especially for the munchies. Pitch a tent, turn your

phone off, and enjoy.

Hiawatha National Forest

There’s plenty to see in this vast forest with shores on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan including the Eben Ice Caves in the winter and beaches in the summer. But for our purposes, this U.P. gem is great for primitive camping — with the correct permits, of course.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

This botanical garden in Grand Rapids offers summer concerts, outdoor sculptures, a butterfly conservatory,

exotic plants, flowers, and much more. Set aside a few hours to see it all.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks has so many hiking trails it’s hard to choose one. It’s a great place for backpacking or just lounging in a hammock and taking in the views of Lake Superior. You can also cruise around on a guided boat tour of the rock formations so you don’t have to do anything but sit back and relax. If you go that route, make sure to bring snacks as tours typically last a few hours.

Proud Lake Recreation Area

For a relaxing stroll about 40 minutes from Detroit, Proud Lake gets our pick. It also has our favorite spot for lazy river kayaking. By lazy river kayaking, we mean the kind where you get in the boat, paddle out to a quiet spot, sit still on the water, and dip your toes in.

Detroit RiverWalk

It was voted the best riverwalk in the country three years in a row for a reason. You get unparalleled views of Windsor, plenty of grassy spots to chill in, barbecue and sushi at Valade Park, and the Detroit River to gaze upon. There’s also always a free event happening, whether its yoga, tai chi, sound bath meditations, hustling classes, and even a Mardi Gras celebration.

Mackinac Island

Take the ferry to Mackinac island for a step back in time. There are no cars

on the island, but you travel by horse and carriage or bike. You can take a leisurely ride, stopping to see rock formations like the Devil’s Kitchen and Arch Rock. Or take a nap by the shoreline, which we highly recommend.

Sleeper State Park

We gotta give the thumb some love. This 723-acre preserve on Saginaw Bay offers beachside camping in safari tents where the sound of waves will lull you to sleep.

Porcupine Mountains

Primitive camping abounds at this Ontonagon hot spot. There are also a few yurts you can stay in and miles of hiking trails. Don’t miss the breathtaking Lake of the Clouds.

Ludington State Park

Ludington has miles of beaches, the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, and Nordhouse Dunes for hiking and beach camping.

Lake Gogebic

Take a rustic getaway on Lake Gogebic, the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. There are plenty of cabins in the area where you can relax around a campfire after strolling around the lake.

Kitch-iti-Kipi

“Michigan’s Big Spring” in Manistique may have the bluest water you’ll ever see. Take a raft out on the crystal clear water or just chill on the shore in complete awe. It’s even more scenic amongst the changing autumn leaves.

24 METRO TIMES 2023 USER’S GUIDE | metrotimes.com

Ocqueoc Falls

You don’t have to cross the Mackinac Bridge to see a waterfall in Michigan, though you will have to head up north. Located in Ocqueoc Township, near Cheboygan, Ocqueoc Falls is the largest waterfall in the Lower Peninsula. There’s a swimming hole and several dirt trails for hiking.

Nichols Arboretum

Nichols Arboretum on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus is a good spot to stop and smell the flowers. It’s close to civilization but will give you an escape along the Huron River without having to drive all the way up north.

Warren Dunes

The Warren Dunes offer beautiful views over Lake Michigan not too far from the city. Take your pick of hiking, kayaking, or just beach bum it.

Isle Royale

Isle Royale is another remote island offering quiet camping and hiking in the untouched wilderness with views of Lake Superior. The island has cozy cabins and if the weather cooperates you may be able to catch the aurora borealis. Come well prepared with supplies and watch out for moose.
