Frost unveils bill to help school districts fend off book complaints
Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost of Orlando unveiled a new proposal that aims to help U.S. school districts fight challenges to books in school classrooms and libraries, which in recent years are largely coming from organized conservative activists rather than concerned parents. The federal legislation, dubbed the Fight Book Bans Act, would empower the U.S. Department of Education to provide up to $100,000 to school districts in the U.S. to cover litigation costs and related expenses tied to challenges against the presence of classroom and library materials in schools. A total of $15 million over five years would be earmarked. Frost’s proposal, introduced in collaboration with fellow U.S. Reps. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, and Jamie Raskin, D-Maryland, comes amid a national surge in book removals from classrooms, primarily at the behest of conservative activists organized with “parental rights” groups like Moms for Liberty, an organization founded in Florida that was recently designated an “extremist hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The state of Florida has led the pack in book complaints, with conservative activists — many of whom are not parents, much less parents of children in Florida schools — empowered by GOP-sponsored laws in Florida that make it easier to remove books from schools.

Abortion rights measure closer to making it onto Florida’s 2024 ballot
Orlando venue the Plaza Live, owned by the Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation, has agreed to pay $5,000 to the state of Florida after nearly a year of pearl-clutching by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation after the venue hosted a touring Christmas-themed drag show. A settlement was reached over the state’s complaint — which threatened measures up to and including the possibility of pulling the venue’s liquor license — between the two entities back in August, but was only recently publicly released. ICYMI, the show was originally accused of being “sexually explicit” and therefore inappropriate for minors. This charge was later debunked by internal incident reports filed by a small squad of Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers checking out the Orlando show: The officers found nothing explicit happening on- or off-stage. The Plaza Live, which has been mostly closed for renovations since June of this year, has been embroiled in this ginned-up controversy courtesy of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis since the original “Drag Queen Christmas” performance on Dec. 28, 2022.
constitutional amendment off the ballot, saying its wording would mislead voters. The ballot summary of the proposal says, in part: “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”

Building industry lobbyists wrote bill to allow teens to work dangerous jobs
Emails obtained by Orlando Weekly through a public records request show that lobbyists for two powerful building and construction lobbying groups — the Florida Home Builders Association and the Associated Builders and Contractors of Florida — are behind a new Republicansponsored bill that would, if approved, allow older teens to work roofing and construction jobs that Florida’s child labor law currently deems too “hazardous” for minors under 18. A lobbyist for the ABC of Florida emailed draft legislation to Republican State Sen. Corey Simon (a former NFL and FSU football player-turned-politician) in October. Simon filed Senate Bill 460, as drafted by the lobbyists, just a few weeks later. While the proposed bill does specify some safeguards (children working these jobs would need to get an OSHA certificate first), critics warn that the safeguards won’t/wouldn’t adequately protect children on the job. We haven’t found evidence to suggest there’s any state-level enforcement of Florida’s child labor law as it is — thereby leaving the actual responsibility of enforcement to the understaffed, under-resourced federal Department of Labor. The feds have identified a stark rise in child labor violations in recent years, with poor and migrant children often most vulnerable to exploitation. Industry group supporters like the Home Builders see children as a partial solution to a labor shortage, while conservative think tanks argue that children should be given the “freedom” and “flexibility” to work longer hours and in dangerous jobs. Child labor rollbacks have been proposed or have passed in at least 16 states, often backed by the same industry groups.
The city of Orlando has decided to extend a free downtown parking program, launched in May, that gives visitors and residents free parking for up to two hours. How does it work? Users of the ParkMobile app can enter the code “ParkDTO” up to eight times per year at any of the roughly 1,200 parking spaces downtown. The program also offers free valet service at a select list of participating restaurants/venues, including Ember, AC Skybar, Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery, Kres Chophouse and Artisan’s Table. The city decided on Dec. 6 to extend and enhance the program, adding another $100,000 to its initial $100,000 budget. The Orlando Business Journal reports that, since its launch, the ParkDTO free parking code has been used at least 6,500 times, and the free valet service available under the program has been used 2,500 times. The ParkMobile code is available to use 24/7. The valet parking component is permitted Wednesday through Sunday between the hours of 5:30 and 9 p.m. A proposed amendment to Florida’s state constitution that would limit government interference in abortion rights and expand abortion access in Florida is getting closer to making it onto the 2024 ballot. The Florida Division of Elections website Friday showed 687,700 valid petition signatures for the proposal, which is sponsored by the political committee Floridians Protecting Freedom. The committee will need to submit at least 891,523 valid signatures statewide by Feb. 1 and meet signature requirements in at least half of the state’s congressional districts, as well as getting the Florida Supreme Court to sign off on the proposed ballot wording, to be added to the November ballot. Floridians Protecting Freedom announced the initiative in May after the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved a law that could prevent abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The six-week limit is contingent on the outcome of a legal battle about a 15-week abortion limit that DeSantis and lawmakers passed in 2022. Attorney General Ashley Moody has argued the Supreme Court should keep the proposed orlandoweekly.com ● DEC. 13-19, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

‘OBJECTIONABLE CONDUCT’
Sodexo management illegally threatened and surveilled Rollins College workers ahead of a union election, according to a complaint filed with the NLRB by Unite Here BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER
A
food service contractor for a private liberal arts college in Florida illegally threatened and surveilled its employees ahead of a union election, according to the union Unite Here, which is calling on the federal labor board to scrap the election results — which turned out to be a narrow loss for the union. The workers’ employer, Sodexo, engaged in “objectionable conduct” ahead of the election, according to Unite Here, including allegedly threatening to fire a worker if they voted for unionization, organizing an anti-union rally, and promising food to workers after the election — with the implication that the food would serve as a reward for voting against unionization. “The objectionable conduct is of such scope and severity that it warrants the setting aside of the election,”a lawyer for the union wrote in objections filed with the National Labor Relations Board, obtained by Orlando Weekly through a public records request. The results were close. In mid-November, after waiting months for an election date, Sodexo employees at Rollins College, near Orlando, voted 39-33 against joining Unite Here Local 362, a union that also represents thousands of workers at Disney World and the Orlando International Airport. 10
This came after over a year of organizing — and consequent surveillance by managers and threats and intimidation from management, according to workers Orlando Weekly previously interviewed. Workers submitted a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for a union election in April — a move that requires at least 30 percent of workers to be in support. But workers went public with their organizing campaign in February, after Sodexo allegedly sicced campus security on four students of the University of Central Florida, who were flyering in support of the union on the private college’s campus. This was a clear attempt at intimidation, several workers told Orlando Weekly later. Security then called the Winter Park Police Department, which issued trespass notices to the young students, according to police records obtained by Orlando Weekly. In their objections to the election results, the union says that Sodexo — a French company with a long history of firing, threatening and intimidating organizing workers — amped up their counter-organizing campaign against the union after workers officially filed a petition to unionize. This aggression was something of a surprise. Unite Here already represents Sodexo workers

elsewhere in Central Florida: at Disney World and at the Orange County Convention Center (both of which workplaces notched notable union wins in the recent past). All in all, the union represents 300,000 workers in the U.S. and Canada, largely in the hospitality and service industries. But dining workers told Orlando Weekly that management has waged a particularly aggressive war against the union reaching Rollins College, a profitable site for Sodexo as an affluent institution that charges students thousands of dollars per semester for meal plans. Sodexo itself, while not a terribly recognizable name, is the nation’s largest federal food service contractor, servicing government cafeterias, schools, hospitals, and other private companies, like Google. It operates in at least 45 counties, with roughly 430,000 employees. While the company reported $22 billion in revenue last year, employees at Rollins College who sought to unionize — including dining hall attendants, cashiers, cooks and others — are paid between $15 to $20 per hour, according to NLRB documents. Some workers at Rollins who have been there for years make the same, if not less, than new hires. Orlando Weekly previously reported on allegations of illegal anti-union behavior from Sodexo management at Rollins College — where many dining employees are people of color and immigrants, some of whom have limited English skills and therefore limited job opportunities elsewhere. We also reported on an anti-union rally that appeared to be orchestrated by Sodexo managers and supervisors who wouldn’t be eligible to join the union anyway. Supervisors passed out“No Union”T-shirts and, according to one worker Orlando Weekly spoke to the next day, allegedly urged dining hall workers who were on the clock to attend the rally. An employee who led the rally (later identified as a senior supervisor) lied to the gathered workers, telling them that all of the Unite Here staff make over $100,000 a year. “You’re about to give ‘em a raise,”she said, earning a “Wow!” from the crowd. An annual report the federal government requires the union to file, however, shows this is blatantly untrue. The rally was conveniently staged one day ahead of a different rally, organized by students and faculty, in support of a free and fair election for the dining workers. On Nov. 27, just over a week after the close election loss, Unite Here submitted a list of 15 examples of “objectionable conduct” to the federal labor board, which oversees union elections among private sector employees, in their plea for the results of the election to be tossed. According to the union, alleged actions by Sodexo management and/or supervisors that warrant an election redo include: • Telling a worker their hours would be cut if they voted in favor of unionizing. • Threatening to fire a worker if they voted in favor of unionizing.
• Telling at least three workers they were required to vote in the union election. • Telling workers that unionizing would be futile, and that it wouldn’t change the company’s policy of laying off workers during the less-busy summer and winter months at the college, forcing them to reapply months later — a policy that workers previously told Orlando Weekly causes instability and inconsistency. • Following and monitoring a “known union supporter,” and behaving in ways that made the worker believe the company was listening in on their conversations with co-workers. • Selectively “approached workers who were on the clock” during the election voting period and “told them to go vote.” According to the union’s objection, management did not approach vocally pro-union workers to remind them to vote (the election took place on a Thursday and Saturday on the Rollins College campus). • Interrogating a worker during the election period, asking if they’d voted and when the worker refused to say,“told the employee that they could vote anyways.” • Escorting workers to the voting location during the election period. • Promising workers ahead of the election they’d serve them pernil — Puerto Rican pork shoulder — after the election, allegedly posed as an incentive to vote against the union. According to the union, the employer fulfilled that promise “on or about the day of the election.” • Failing to ensure that a notice of the election posted in one of the dining halls (as required by labor law) remained free of“Employer-issued antiunion propaganda” that was plastered over the notice ahead of the election. • Failing to provide the union with a complete list of employees who were eligible to vote in the election ahead of the voting period, as required under federal law. • Holding the election at a location on the college campus (the library) that requires use of an employer-issued ID badge scanner to enter, and which workers rarely, if ever, actually visit. This, the union says, led workers to believe they could be tracked by their employer as they went to vote. “Although the scanning mechanism was apparently disabled during the voting and the library doors left open, the Employer did not notify workers that this would be the case so as to dispel the impression that whether or not they entered to vote could be traced and tracked,”the union’s objection reads. • Announcing a rule in April (after workers filed a petition to unionize) that prohibited wearing pins in the workplace. A worker testified to a NLRB hearing officer that, sometime after the new rule went into effect, they were directed by a supervisor to remove a “pro-union” pin they were wearing. • Organizing an “anti-union” rally on the Rollins College campus. The union describes this as coercive behavior that demonstrated to workers that Sodexo“sponsors and supports expressions of anti-union sentiment.” The employer also bought anti-union T-shirts, the union alleges, and essentially polled workers on what they thought of
[ news + views ] the union by presenting them with the opportunity to attend the rally and take anti-union paraphernalia. • Making a threat, during the antiunion rally, to call the police on workers for engaging in organizing activities. Orlando Weekly witnessed this (we think). A sous chef (who wasn’t going to be eligible to join the union anyway) told Orlando Weekly at the rally that “these people” (presumably pro-union folks) were harassing workers, and had followed her to her car. It had reached the point, she said, that “If they don’t stop, I’m going to call the police.” Sodexo did not respond to Orlando Weekly‘s request for comment on this story. However, back in February, Sodexo sent an emailed statement denying allegations from workers of unlawful behavior. “Sodexo respects the rights of our employees to unionize or not to unionize, as proven by the hundreds of CBAs [collective bargaining agreements, a.k.a. union contracts] we have in good standing with unions across the country,”a spokesperson told Orlando Weekly over email. “We are confident this will also reach an amicable agreement for workers, the union, and our client soon.” Unite Here Local 362 did not respond to Orlando Weekly‘s request for comment on this story. Violations of workers’ right to organize and form unions in the workplace isn’t uncommon. Employers are charged with breaking federal law in roughly 4 in 10 union elections, an analysis from the Economic Policy Institute found, which commonly happens in the form of disciplining or firing workers, or changing terms of their employment, in retaliation for organizing or for being vocally pro-union. Close to home, a Teamsters local similarly objected to the results of an election last month for delivery workers for ReadyRefresh, a bottled water supplier owned by a former Nestlé Waters North America subsidiary, in Davenport, Florida. The result of that election was a tie, but since more than 50 percent of support is needed for the union to prevail, a tie is interpreted under federal law as a loss. Objections filed by the Teamsters, obtained by Orlando Weekly through a records request, similarly detail allegations of company management retaliating against a worker known to be pro-union, and telling workers that joining the Teamsters union would be futile. Company management also allegedly told workers they’d see worse working conditions, would no longer be able to earn commission pay, and would earn less money if they voted to unionize. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com
THE BILL COMES DUE
Will OnePulse pay the state back $394,321 in grant money for their scrapped museum project? BY M CKEN N A S C HUE L E R
T
he OnePulse Foundation could be forced to pay back the state of Florida $394,321 in grant money for funds that were intended to help pay for a recently scrapped museum project to honor the lives of mass shooting victims. OnePulse, a nonprofit, entered into a grant agreement with the state for $500,000 in 2019, specifically for the development of “Pulse National Memorial and Museum” to honor the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12, 2016, as well as the shooting survivors — some of whom are vocal critics of the OnePulse foundation and have protested the museum project, calling instead for a permanent, publicly owned memorial. With little progress made on the museum, however, the nonprofit announced in October that it wouldn’t be moving forward with it. Under pressure from Pulse survivors and critics of the nonprofit, OnePulse soon after announced that its board had voted to begin the process of transferring its assets and dissolving the organization. Critics have demanded answers as to where money collected by the organization has gone, as well as accountability for public funds collected through the state and local government. A letter from the Florida Department of State sent to OnePulse on Dec. 5, 2023, informed the nonprofit organization that, under its state agreement, OnePulse would be required to pay back the state all of the grant money already paid out — $394,321 — if the foundation truly plans to abandon the project the funds were meant for. “If the Grantee cannot provide detailed assurances that are consistent with the Grant Agreement, then the Division must end the Grant Agreement … and the Grantee is subject to repayment of 100 percent of the grants paid,” reads the letter, signed by Florida Department of State deputy general counsel Jon Morris. In response, OnePulse spokesperson Scott Bowman told Orlando Weekly in a statement that OnePulse has hired legal counsel to review “the appropriate steps needed to carry out the board’s decision [to dissolve the organization] and comply with applicable Florida Statutes.” “The answers to your other questions will be part of that process and will be shared at the appropriate time,” Bowman added. The new letter from the Department of State comes one week after legal counsel for the Orange County government, which also agreed to give OnePulse money for the Pulse museum project, warned the board of county commissioners that the county — not OnePulse — could be on the hook for paying that state money back. Orange County had entered into its own agreement with OnePulse, earmarking $10 million in tourist development tax dollars for the museum project in 2018. At least $6.5 million of that had been spent as
of late October — $3 million on design services, $3.5 million on purchasing land for the project, near the former club site — when OnePulse informed the county that the nonprofit planned to give up on the museum. The organization also told Orange County that they would therefore forfeit the remaining $3.5 million and return the parcel of land. Not long after, however, the county sent a notice of default to OnePulse, after learning of a breach of contract. The nonprofit, according to the county, had breached its agreement by leasing out portions of its property without the county’s consent. Under the agreement, OnePulse was barred from leasing out property intended for the Pulse museum without county approval. In a discussion of the situation last week, Orange County’s legal team told the board of county commissioners that due to conditions of both the state and local agreements, the county (not OnePulse) could be on the hook for paying back the $394,321 to the state, as the soon-to-be successive owner of the property purchased for the museum. The letter sent by the Department of States implies otherwise. According to the letter, OnePulse has 15 days as of receipt of the letter to“cure any impediment to fulfilling the obligations in the grant,” noting that
the organization’s announced plans to give up on the museum and dissolve itself constituted a clear acknowledgment that OnePulse “cannot fulfill” its obligations. The OnePulse foundation has collected millions of dollars over the years, some specifically for the development of a Pulse memorial and museum, although it has been scrutinized for paying several of its executives six-figure salaries. In 2019, the nonprofit also created an annual scholarship program to honor Pulse victims. However, by the foundation’s own admission, most scholarships have largely gone to people who were not at the club the night of the shooting, nor family members of victims. Despite recent developments, some state money still remains unaccounted for. In addition to the $500,000 granted by the state in 2019, an additional $680,000 in state money was allocated for OnePulse for the “Pulse National Museum and Memorial”project in 2020 through a state appropriations process. The Dec. 5 letter from the Department of State does not address that budget allocation. Orlando State Rep. Anna Eskamani, however, said she’s asked the state for an update on whether that $680,000 has already been spent, or if it can be returned to the state. “My goal is to ensure that all public monies intended to go towards a Pulse memorial will go towards a Pulse memorial,” Eskamani told Orlando Weekly. “This is not only important for the healing of our community but it is the fiscally responsible thing to do. I will continue to work with the Department of State and others to make this goal a reality so that we may honor the lives lost at Pulse in a meaningful and impactful way.”

Orlando artist Boy Kong practices ‘zero-point’ painting at Fruits | Photos by Matt Keller Lehman
THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABOR
Boy Kong and friends launch Fruits, a weekly ‘art yoga’ meetup at Kaya BY MICH AEL CU GLI ET TA
O
n nice days, artist Boy Kong will invite his sister, Tammy Truong, and his friend Hiep Nguyen over. They’ll lay a blanket out in the yard and spend the afternoon painting the flowers and plants around them while eating fruit. “This feels like such a good life,” Kong says, reflecting on those afternoons. “I feel so rich.” He believes a good day is like someone handing you a 20-dollar bill. To spend it cooped up at home, lost in your phone, is like tearing
the cash into pieces and tossing it in the trash. “When we go somewhere, we meet new people. Life is about connecting with new people,” Kong says. For the last few years, he and Truong and Nguyen have talked about curating an informal event, in which they would find a big field, lay a blanket out and invite the public to join them for a day of painting, eating fruit and getting to know one another. The idea never progressed further than a conversation.
That is, until friends Lordfer Lalicon and Jamilyn Salonga Bailey took over the Mills 50 buildings formerly occupied by Dandelion Communitea Café and transformed it into Kaya, a Michelinrecommended Filipino restaurant. Kaya has a beautifully manicured garden in front. The centerpiece is a mature bodhi tree, like the one the Buddha sat under for 49 days to obtain enlightenment. The bodhi’s lizard-green, heartshaped leaves umbrella the garden. “The space is so juicy,” Kong says, describing it as a little oasis tucked away in an otherwise hectic part of the city. In October, the trio launched Fruits, a weekly meetup under Kaya’s bodhi tree, in the Mills 50 District. Although the “art yoga,” as Kong describes it, is free to all, he hopes it will provide people with an enlightening opportunity to spend their 20-dollar bill.
UNDER THE BODHI TREE
Boy Kong, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday, has been earning his living as an artist since he was 20. If you live in Orlando, you’ve likely seen his work. He’s painted several murals
around the city, including the tiger on the side of Kabooki Sushi on Colonial Drive, the outsized strawberry on the old lamp shop on Mills Avenue, and the ramen painting inside Domu. Currently, he’s working on pieces to comprise an exhibit due to open at the Orlando Museum of Art in May. On Sundays, he, Truong and Nguyen lean two large canvases up against the bodhi tree, alongside an assortment of watercolors and brushes. Truong and Nguyen own Koko Kakigori, a Japanese shaved ice shop in one of Kaya’s buildings. The art supplies are funded through the sale of Koko’s handprinted silkscreen T-shirts, with a logo designed by Truong who, like her brother, is an artist. Everyone who attends Fruits is invited to pick up a brush and add to the canvases. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a sketchbook. At a Fruits meetup in November, Kong went from person to person, offering tips. He brought his own sketchbook and demonstrated his technique. Kong believes art can be medicine. He says people come to Fruits to hang out and draw but, secretly, he is “sneaking Tylenol onto their spoons.”

On that November Sunday, he passed around a sumi ink set. Sumi ink is used in calligraphy. It comes in a block that looks like a big rectangular crayon. The ink is produced by grinding the block against a slate tray. Kong is in the daily habit of painting with sumi ink. Each morning, he’ll sit with his tea or coffee and his sumi set. “There’s something about making the ink, it creates a pause before the painting, and a lot of thought before the painting, like the clouds building up before it rains,” he says. He goes to Latin grocery stores to purchase the paper some cooks use to roll tamales. It’s similar to parchment, but more affordable, which is important because he can go through upward of 100 sheets a day. He compares sumi ink to a lie detector test. “It’s reading your heart,” he says. Kong says the key to painting clean lines is to slow down and be present. The reason Truong and Nguyen named their business Koko is because it’s the Japanese word for “here.” “To us, ‘here’ means being present in the moment,” Nguyen says. “Art reminds you to be
present, as you concentrate on your brushstrokes.” “That’s the Tylenol part,” Kong elaborates. “You’re sneaking in medicine for people.”
ZERO-POINT PAINTING
While the sketchbooks are for more refined work, the large canvases are reserved for what Kong calls zero-point painting. He was turned on to zero-point painting in 2016, when he was hired by the family who own Baldauf Käse, the oldest family-run cheese creamery in Germany. They flew him out to the Bavarian Alps and paid him to paint a mural in their factory. The grandmother of the family, who was also a painter, insisted on helping Kong with the mural. She taught a class in zero-point painting. One day, she invited Kong to attend. When he arrived, he found canvases, paints and brushes. He was told to pick a color, grab a brush and start painting. Instinctively, he found himself painting a bowl. “I was so used to creating a product. I was ready to impress, ready to paint something people could understand,” Kong remembers. Then he realized he wasn’t supposed to be
painting figures, at least not consciously. So, he painted over the bowl and spent the rest of the class making circles on the canvas. At the end of class, the instructor pulled him aside and told him it looked like he was having a hard time with the concept of zero-point painting. Today, Kong regularly practices zero-point painting. It’s one of the things he does with sumi ink on tamale paper. “You’re not putting it into a portfolio. There’s less pressure. You’re just having fun and expressing yourself purely,” he says, comparing the practice to a child playing. When he, Truong and Nguyen were organizing Fruits, Kong saw an opportunity to introduce people to zero-point painting. It’s one of the reasons they wanted to make the event free: When people spend money on canvases and paints, they can be
inclined to take the painting more seriously (too seriously), to justify their purchases. But, perhaps, there is no such thing as zero-point painting. Or, maybe, art can be found anywhere, if you know how to see it. After a recent Fruits meetup, Kong was breaking down the canvas when he noticed paint had bled through to the underside, creating what he thought were interesting shapes. He went home, took out his sketchpad and began drawing those shapes over and over again. He compared them to a surfboard, a fish-oil pill, a stone. When he had the shapes down just right, he got out his paints and a canvas and, just like that, he had a new piece of work. One which could, potentially, end up in the Orlando Museum of Art next May. arts@orlandoweekly.com

Orlando-born mezzosoprano Michaela Wright offers a recital of songs selected for their feminine focus
Hark, all ye classical music aficionados
who yearn to hear some Handel other than “Messiah” this holiday season! Orlando-born mezzo-soprano Michaela Wright is offering an escape from the Christmas choirs Dec. 16 with an afternoon solo recital at Timucua Arts titled Empowered. I recently spoke with Wright — who is also an educator and nonprofit digital marketing manager — about her musical celebration of womanhood, launching her arts career in the middle of a pandemic, and why she enjoys playing roles originally written for castrated men. From an early age, Wright says, she always wanted to be on stage, wearing out VHS cassettes of Cats and Grease until her mother put her into dance lessons. “I was always singing,” she says, joking. “I was the kid that came out of the womb singing show tunes.” After participating simultaneously in the choir and theater programs at West Orange High School, she attended Jacksonville University with the intention of earning a BFA in musical theater. Instead, she sang classical music for the first time in college,

“which was a really late start for most classical musicians, but a really fitting start for me. I actually loved it so much that I decided to change my major to vocal performance [and] then went on to get a masters, which I did at University of Illinois.” In 2020, Wright returned to Orlando to help her family care for her disabled younger sister, and COVID derailed her singing career just as it was getting started. “It was an interesting situation; I had, I think, 11 performances canceled when I graduated. I was supposed to sing Flora in La Traviata, and I was supposed to do a production of Beauty and the Beast, and it just all fell through, so it was kind of devastating.” Contracts for early-career opera singers typically last two to three years, but when COVID closed theaters, Wright says the previously contracted singers were kept on for two to three years more, “so everything’s kind of delayed by a couple of years” for her cohort of pandemic-era graduates. Since then, Wright has made inroads into Orlando’s opera scene, most notably playing
young male “pants” roles in Opera del Sol’s Hansel & Gretel and Igor Stravinsky in Nathan Felix’s No. 5. “I have a long history of playing young boys and men on stage, which is really fun. Guys get to do fun things on stage like combat,” says Wright, who has a theory as to why this cross-dressing tradition is accepted by otherwise conservative patrons: The roles used to be sung by castrati. “I think people kind of glaze over it because they’re uncomfortable with the roots of that, so they’re more inclined to accept that a woman is now playing a man because it’s better than the alternative,” suggests Wright. “I also think it’s a good opportunity to say, ‘maybe you’re not so comfortable with drag, but that’s kind of drag.’” Wright continues. “I don’t want to insert myself into spaces where marginalized people exist, but I think it’s a good conversation starter. Would you feel comfortable taking your kid to see a production of Le Nozze di Figaro where Cherubino is played by a woman? If you’re comfortable with that, then you’re kind
of comfortable with drag, because it’s really that in essence.” However, Wright will shed the pants for her upcoming performance, where she’ll be accompanied by pianist Ledean Williams on songs selected for their feminine focus, starting first and foremost with Handel’s “Lucrezia” cantata. Wright admits, “It feels a little rebellious to be doing Handel that’s not ‘Messiah’ this time of year,” but says she “fell absolutely in love” with the challenging work after her teacher recommended learning it.“It’s the story of this woman who is really powerless in this situation; is sexually assaulted by this prince Tarquinius; and she takes her own life as a result,” Wright says. “As sad as it is, as terrible and tragic as it is, there is something empowering about knowing that women have shared experiences throughout history. As sad as they may be, there’s something validating about that.” As the longest piece, “Lucrezia” anchors the program, but Wright says she was inspired — in part by her work with the New York City-based activist orchestra Protestra — to surround it with “a whole recital of women-empowering pieces, whatever that may mean to me specifically.” The intersectionally aware selections include Debussy’s settings of the Sapphic “Songs of Bilitis,” which Wright says are about “falling in love, and then falling in love with oneself enough to say, ‘I’ve grown out of this relationship’”; as well as a song by Dead Man Walking composer Jake Heggie, who “writes these love songs to women’s voices.” You can’t put a price on empowerment, so admission to Wright’s show will be by optional donation, but you need a free RSVP to attend (grab the link in the online version of this story on orlandoweekly.com). And if you miss her in person, keep an eye out for @mezzomichaela on social media, where she helps groups like Central Florida Vocal Arts spread the good word about themselves.“As artists, I think oftentimes we feel like, ‘Oh, gosh, I have to ask people to come to another thing,’ but people are really interested in what artists are doing,” says Wright. “I want to empower other artists to feel good about marketing themselves as well.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

AS GOURD AS IT GETS
Chayote Barrio Kitchen sets chef Mario Pagan’s ‘New Latin Table’ in Winter Park Village BY FA IYAZ KARA
C
hef Mario Pagan has long been a fixture of Puerto Rico’s restaurant scene, having purchased his first restaurant, Chayote, in the Miramar neighborhood of San Juan in 2000 from late chef Alfredo Ayala, a man Pagan considers to be his mentor. Books and television appearances soon followed, including a stint on The Next Iron Chef where he competed alongside another culinary notable who recently opened a restaurant in our town, Maneet Chauhan. But it’s Pagan’s ties to Florida that offer a glimpse into his cooking ethos. After leaving architecture school in Miami, he committed to a future in cooking by enrolling in the culinary
program at Johnson & Wales. In the mid-’90s, under the tutelage of Norman Van Aken at Norman’s in Coral Gables, Pagan became immersed, molded and affected by the legendary chef’s “New World Cuisine,” which lent culinary legitimacy to the immigrant cultures of Latin America, the Caribbean, South America and West Africa. So much so that Pagan’s first stateside restaurant, Chayote Barrio Kitchen in Winter Park Village, presents a menu rooted in what he’s dubbed “Nueva Mesa Latina,” or the “New Latin Table.” While it’s modern in every respect, Chayote’s Latin-forward bill of fare “celebrates the heritage and culinary footprint of all Hispanic
cultures and Latinx cuisine,” and that includes alcapurrias ($14). This most Boricua of snacks has its origins in the Middle East and typically resembles kibbeh, at least in form. But here, the fritters fashioned from grated yuca, taro and West Indian pumpkin looked more like falafel crowned with tahini. I purposely ate only a couple of the pucks filled with roasted pork and topped with Colombian ají pique mayo, but couldn’t help myself to the other two, knowing a plate of pulpo ($27) was on its way. The cuts of tender octopus confit mildly piqued with pimentón dulce were served over a black bean refrito. But what caught my eye were the golden cracklings rising above the plate like miniature plumes of cumulonimbus. I thought they were chicharrones but, in fact, these not-so-porky rinds were formed from tapioca via some good ol’ fashioned molecular machination. I feared fumes of liquid nitrogen would accompany the adobo lamb confit ($42) but, thankfully, no such distracting novelty here. Beneath the shoulder’s crispy shell was lamb so tender it was practically fluffy. The chunky cut sat up against a side of charred broccoli, a sauce of lingonberries, and gnocchi made from boniato, a root veg akin to sweet potatoes. The latter, slathered in chèvre crema, were
so overseasoned they gave me the salt willies. On another visit, the namesake chayote salad ($21), with its sultry blend of quinoa-dotted ghost shrimp nestled into watercress, avocado and cubes of chayote squash, seemed to be missing the advertised soursop. Sadly (for me, anyway — I love soursop!), the tropical fruit was removed from the salad and replaced with a soursop vinaigrette having no discernible flavor. These are fixable quibbles, IMO. Price aside, there’s nothing in need of fixing with the pepiada ($23), a riff on the “reina pepiada” named for Venezuelan “curvaceous queen” Susana Duijm after she was crowned Miss World 1955. It isn’t as shapely a starter, particularly for those who’d get the reference, but the wee corn cakes topped with a chicken-avocado mash topped with osetra caviar were pleasingly function over form. But Pagan taps into his inner Zaha Hadid in architecting the “lubina” ($52), Chilean sea bass coated in a thin dusting of panko, then seared and baked. The angular cut of fish is set atop three little asparagus logs snugged into a bed of truffle-buttered yuca mousse. A rich sauce formed from a holy trinity of ingredients — foie, port and veal stock — pools around the base, and I can see why it’s Pagan’s signature dish. The thing resembles the Antwerp Port House, one of Hadid’s most famous works (look it up). He even serves it at his Mario Pagán Restaurant in San Juan along with other dishes that parallel Chayote’s. The barkeeps, BTW, are a proper friendly and experienced bunch. Ask for an off-menu creation called the “clairvoyant,” with a base of Kyoto dry gin, Japanese bermutto and Chareau, to start things off — you won’t regret it. Unless you have 10 of them. Which you might. To end things, both the torta de queso ($11) with goat cheese, passion fruit, mango gel and dark ganache, and the sweet tres leches ($11) with pistachio genoise and meringue, were carefully crafted cappers. Pagan’s symbiosis of elements from the New World appears to be attracting food-curious Winter Parkers to Chayote. And that symbiosis isn’t just confined to the food and drink, either. The restaurant’s interior is a seemingly disparate hodgepodge of bold contemporary and tropical patterns and finishes, but Chayote ugly it’s not. The stylistic fusion comes together to form a cohesive, striking design. And the revivification of Winter Park Village is all the better for it. There’s no question Pagan’s “Nueva Mesa Latina” will be a popular draw, not to mention an integral component, of Winter Park Village’s nueva landscape. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Premieres Wednesday:
Dubai Bling — Mona Kattan, Global President of Huda Beauty, joins the cast for Season 2, which promises “drama and tension galore.” What a relief, because the Middle East had been eerily quiet recently. (Netflix) Planners — Moving over from Hulu, the Argentine series enters a second season of drama set within the high-pressure world of event planning. And I don’t care how many episodes of Bridezillas you’ve watched: You don’t know horror until you’ve seen a Fiesta de Quince end in AK fire. (Disney+) Tierra Incognita — It looks as if Season 2 of the Argentinian YA horror series might bring teen protagonist Eric into contact with his dead mom. Which begs the question of what’s going on with his dead dad. Maybe the caseworker lady from Beetlejuice granted them shared custody on alternating weekends? (Disney+)
Premieres Thursday:
As the Crow Flies — Asli continues to usurp her boss, Lale, in Season 2 of the Turkish show that’s kind of like All About Eve, but for TV
journalism. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy B-roll! (Netflix) The Crown — With the nasty business of Diana’s death out of the way, the final six episodes of the series can focus on happier events, like the wedding of Charles to Camilla and the courtship of William and Kate. Notice no one’s saying anything about Harry and Meghan, which is a nice change from the real world. (Netflix) Yu Yu Hakusho — The 30-year-old manga gets its first-ever live-action adaptation, introducing a whole new audience to the story of a teenager whose accidental death leads to him becoming a so-called Underworld Detective. In one of the few updates from the source comic, his first case is to figure out why Mitch McConnell hasn’t gotten there yet. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:

Face to Face With ETA: Conversations With a Terrorist — The organizers of September’s San Sebastian Film Festival faced harsh criticism for booking this cinematic sit-down with José Antonio Urrutikoetxea, aka Josu Ternera, former leader of the Spanish Basque separatist group ETA. Spaniards from all walks of life feared the film would offer too sympathetic a portrait, which seems kind of odd since the word “terrorist” is right there in the title. Over here, it would be called Sovereign Citizens in Cars Getting Coffee. (Netflix) The Family Plan — Mark Wahlberg plays a dad who takes his family on an impromptu vacation to keep them safe from terrorists who still hold a grudge against him from his days as a government assassin. Sounds like he should stay far away from Epic Universe if the rumors about that Hezbollah Landing are true. (Apple TV+) Joe Bob’s Creepy Christmas — The contents of this year’s schlock double feature are top secret as always, and the beneficiary of the attendant charity auction hadn’t been revealed at press time. Yet I’m still getting paid to write this blurb anyway. Merry Christmas, everybody! (Shudder and AMC+) Reacher — Season 2 sets Jack on the trail of a mysterious killer who’s systematically bumping off his old Army buddies. Wow, these Watchmen reboots always hit when you least expect it. (Prime Video) Such Brave Girls — British writer/actor Kat Sadler says that being institutionalized was one of the experiences she drew upon when developing this dark sitcom about a pathetic pair of sisters and their equally clueless mom. What a refreshing change of pace for a show creator to go to the loony bin first. (Hulu) Un Navidad Para Chueco — Spend some quality holiday time with Argentina’s favorite talking primate. I’M 18, AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WANT
Heavy Orlando band Gillian Carter go screaming into adulthood BY GRAYS O N KEGLOVIC
O
rlando’s most notable screamo band is entering adulthood. This Friday night, Gillian Carter will celebrate their 18th anniversary with a performance at Will’s Pub. To both celebrate and summarize their musical path, the band has curated a special setlist of songs that have distinguished them as one to watch since their 2005 debut, The Flood That Came After the Storm.
“We will be performing songs that defined our 18-year career, songs we haven’t played in years,”said Logan Rivera, Gillian Carter’s vocalist, guitarist (and more) and producer. “We’ve never really celebrated any milestones in this band.” Gillian Carter, composed of Rivera, bassist Bob Caruso and drummer Tony Oriza, knew they wanted to celebrate the big 18 with friends and fellow musicians who are meaningful to them.
The stage at Will’s will thus be a showcase of crucial Central Florida heaviness — with Horsewhip, The Caution Children and Weak — all bands the trio are friends with, and fans of. The Caution Children have been comrades of the band since 2006, “so it was a no-brainer,” according to Rivera. Rivera said that Gillian Carter toured with Tampa’s Horsewhip after befriending them in 2018. And while Gillian Carter has never shared a stage with Orlando metallers Weak, Rivera said he and his bandmates have been eager to perform with them for a while. “We basically wanted to share the evening with homies, close friends and bands we love,” said Rivera.“All three are tremendously talented bands whose music rips.” In preparation for their upcoming run of anniversary shows, Gillian Carter has spent time reminiscing on milestones and memories from nearly 20 years playing music together, said Rivera. When asked about his favorite tour memory, Rivera recalled a show in Philadelphia where they got paid for their performance with a bag of Doritos. “Lessons learned: Don’t play Philly unless a homie sets the show up,” said Rivera. Gillian Carter has been fortunate enough to
take their sound outside their hometown of Palm Bay, Florida. Since the band’s start, they’ve played across the world, embarking on two different overseas tours. “The first time we went in 2018, the audiences had heard of us,” Rivera said.“This time we were the headliner, and the people who attended the shows were there for us.” After their first time in Europe in 2018, the band played their second European tour earlier this year. During their time in Europe, they gigged as support for France’s Gros Enfant Mort and played the Fluff Fest in the Czech Republic. “The fact that we played shows in other countries and people drove from hours away just to come see us is mind-blowing,” said Rivera. “It makes you feel like you’re doing something right.” Whether you’re looking to headbang and mosh or just want to crash a metaphorical 18-year-old’s birthday party, the weekend’s Gillian Carter show is one you won’t want to miss. “Eighteen years is a pretty long time and we figured it would be a fun way to celebrate with friends and loved ones,”Rivera said.“Plus this will be our last show of the year.” Merry Christmas (and happy birthday), you filthy animals. music@orlandoweekly.com

Please Believe in Yourself, Alright? is a return to the rousing blend of pith and personality that originally made Marc a cult hero. LOCAL RELEASES
In the dizzying world of Orlando indie-pop artist Marc With a C, new album Please Believe in Yourself, Alright? is the second installment in the opening trilogy of the second phase of MWAC’s career. With this new phase, Marc has dropped the famous longtime persona for a genuine, first-person point of view. Pretty sure that convoluted intro just sent my copy editor into a meltdown, but it’s actually a relatively tight summation of where things stand with MWAC. And it’s only the reflective surface of Marc’s story of late. With Marc’s dire, real-life health struggles coloring MWAC’s always-conceptual art, their personal and professional journey has been as heavy as it’s been head-spinning in recent years. Right about now, we — both Marc and the listeners following Marc’s saga alike — could probably use a bit of respite. Well, this new album delivers that needed breath. Last year’s Thanatophobia, the previous album that momentously launched the new unmasked iteration of MWAC, was an especially ambitious and far-reaching work of moody pop psychedelia. The freshly released Please Believe in Yourself, Alright?, on the other hand, is a brisk and bracing shot of indie-pop that beams with directness
Marc With a C’s dire, real-life health struggles have made their personal and professional journey both heavy and headspinning in recent years. Now a respite has arrived in the bracing indie-pop of Please Believe in Yourself, Alright? and immediacy. Most of the 10 songs here come galloping with wide-eyed vim and sparkling melodies. Rather than the heaviness that’s been filtering into MWAC’s newer music, these songs ring bright and unburdened. Of course, the subject matter isn’t always as sunny as the tunes that carry it, but that’s
Eyehategod, Plague Spitter, Drag Pattern, Shock & Awe: Bow down, Orlando. New Orleans royalty Eyehategod are coming to own our asses with the noxious Southern sludge that’s made them one of the foremost horsemen of the NOLA metal apocalypse for over 20 years. Opening are promising glimpses of fresh blood from the heavy Florida underground, including the raging metal punk of Plague Spitter (featuring members of Wreath), the savage hardcore of Drag Pattern (featuring members of Yashira and Gouge Away) and the experi-metal of Shock & Awe. (7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, Conduit, $20) Open Mike Eagle, Pink Naval, O_Super: If all the pop-trap clogging the musical zeitgeist right now has numbed you a bit, this left-field rap bill could be the cure that restores your hope for the future of hip-hop. L.A.’s Open Mike Eagle has blazed an interesting two-pronged path for himself in the indie underground. Musically, he’s been on the alternative-rap vanguard with sharply literate music that shines with character and wit. But this Hannibal Buress homie has also become an emergent figure in the comedy world with lots of smart podcast, TV and film work. In Open Mike Eagle’s hands, those two tracks have proven incredibly complementary. Also featured on the bill are the equally interesting likes of Mag.Lo collaborator O_Super and Massachusetts’ Pink Naval, whose colorful egghead rap crackles with quirk and complexity. of the discussion!] — few records conjure up a hazy, festive, slightly melancholic (but in a good way) holiday fugue like Vince Guaraldi’s music for 1965’s Charlie Brown Christmas. Spare, emotive and winter piano chords amble through a starry, snowy night where all things seem possible. Now the Zach Bartholomew Trio tackles the album that soundtracked generations of childrens’ holidays. In addition to hearing Guaraldi’s songs from the Blue Bamboo stage, the audience will also learn more about Guaraldi’s music and life courtesy of Dr. Bartholomew (a musician and professor) and company. Don’t be a blockhead and miss out. 8 p.m., Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, 1905 Kentucky Ave., Winter Park, bluebambooartcenter.com, $25-$35. — MM

Pentatonix
Is it even the holiday season if you don’t see a pitch-erperfect performance? Grab your a-ca-fellas, because Pentatonix is coming to town. The a cappella group has proven a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. The quintet caters to every demographic, singing covers of songs from the “old days” and modern hits from artists like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Pentatonix got their start after winning NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2011 and two short years later, the quintet scored a place on the Billboard Top 20 for their rendition of “Little Drummer Boy.” To date, they’ve won three Grammy Awards and released a plethora of singles, albums and EPs, their latest being 31 songs’ worth of The Greatest Christmas Hits. 6:30 p.m., Amway Center, 400 W. Miller and his compatriots — all working for free on the big night — have garnered more than 2,500 donated toys over the years, all going out to local charities and nonprofits. Get ready to ride a wave of nostalgia as Central Floridian rap sensation Rod Wave’s “Nostalgia Tour” hits the Amway Center. Born Rodarius Marcell Green, he gained popularity in 2019 for his single “Heart on Ice,” which reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 list after going viral on TikTok. Wave’s latest album, Nostalgia, is an ode to his childhood and the trials and tribulations that got him where he is today, through a mix of balladeering vocals and vigorous rap with a sound that’s been compared to YNW Melly, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Polo G. . A melodic album that blends hip-hop and rap to capture the essence of his past, Nostalgia is best experienced in-person. 8 p.m., Amway Center, 400 W. Church St., amwaycenter.com, $45.50-$225. — GK

Punk Brunch
Ten years after their debut album, I Hate It, Orlando punks Teen Agers are saying farewell and taking the stage for the last time on Sunday as part of this Punk Brunch show. Their announcement hit the socials in October, when the band announced they had five shows left and would be playing their debut album in full to mark the moment. It’s a proper sendoff, with a stacked 10-band line up featuring Floridian compatriots The Eradicator, Porch Coffin, Debt Neglector and more. This may be their final show, but the spirit is celebratory and the future bright. The band says, “Yes, we still love each other and always will. We’re just ready to focus our energy on new musical endeavors (including new projects with each other).” Noon, Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $15. — Ida V. Eskamani

[ free will astrology ] BY ROB BREZSNY
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Egyptian Pharaoh
Tutankhamun died over 3,300 years ago. When his mournful entourage placed him in his tomb, the treasures they left included a pot of honey, which was meant to sweeten his travels in the afterlife. In the early 20th century, archaeologists excavated the ancient site. They dared to sample the honey, finding it as tasty and fresh as if it had just been made. Amazingly, this same longevity is a characteristic of most honey. I propose we use this as a metaphor for your life. What old resources or experiences from your past might be as pure and nurturing as they were originally? And now could they be of value now?
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Screenwriter John
Patrick Shanley writes, “Life holds its miracles, good erupting from darkness chief among them.” I predict a comparable miracle for you, Capricorn, though I suspect it will arise out of confusion or inertia rather than darkness. My advice: Don’t be so bogged down in the muddle that you miss the signs that a great awakening is nigh. Start rehearsing how you will feel when deliverance arrives.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Before he reached the height of fame as a novelist, Aquarian Charles Dickens experienced financial instability. When he was 31, the situation got desperate, and he resolved to take extreme measures. For six weeks, beginning in October 1843, he obsessively worked on writing the story A Christmas Carol. It was published on Dec. 19 and sold out in a few days. Within a year, 13 editions were released. Dicken’s economic worries were over. Dear Aquarius, I think the near future will be a favorable time for you, too, to take dramatic, focused action to fix a problem you’re having. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Many religious people believe God can hear their prayers and intervene in worldly affairs. Other religious folks think God can hear their prayers but may not intervene. Then there are the non-religious folks who don’t believe in God and think praying is useless. Wherever you might be on the spectrum, Pisces, I’m pleased to reveal that you will have extra access to support and benefaction in the coming weeks — whether that’s from God, fate, nature or other humans. So seek out blessings and assistance with alacrity. Be receptive to all potential helpers, even unlikely ones. ARIES (March 21-April 19): In 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped from enslavement on a plantation in Maryland. She could have enjoyed her new freedom in peace, but instead resolved to liberate others. During 13 bold forays into
enemy territory, she rescued 70 enslaved people and ushered them to safety. She testified that she relied on her dreams and visions to help her carry out her heroic acts. They revealed to her the best escape routes to take, the best times to proceed, and information about how to avoid the fiendish “slave catchers.” In alignment with astrological omens, I invite you to be like Tubman and seek practical guidance from your dreams in the coming weeks — to solve problems or seek bliss.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Jack Nicholson has often played mavericks and anti-heroes in his movies. His life away from the silver screen has also been less than steady and predictable. For example, he has fathered six children with five different women. His fellow actor, Carrie Fisher, said Jack was “fun because he doesn’t make sense.” A person with casual knowledge of astrology might be surprised that Nicholson is a Taurus. Your tribe isn’t typically renowned for high eccentricity. But in his natal chart, Nicholson has the brash planet Uranus near his sun in Taurus, indicating he’s quirky. Aside from that, I have known plenty of Tauruses whose commitment to being uniquely themselves makes them idiosyncratic. These themes will be in play for you during the coming weeks. (Speaking of not making sense, Taurus musician David Byrne starred in the concert film Stop Making Sense.) GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The platitude says
that if life gives us lemons, we should make lemonade. I’ve got a variation on this theme. Consider the Neva River in northwestern Russia. It freezes every winter. During the frigid months of 1739-1740, Empress Anna Ioannovna ordered her workers to cut huge blocks of ice and use them to construct a magnificent palace on the riverbank. She filled the place with furniture and art, making it a hub of festivities celebrating Russia’s triumph over the Ottoman Empire. I bring these themes to your attention, Gemini, because I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will have substantial redemptive power. Whether you make lemonade from lemons or a palace from a frozen river is up to you.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): “If the world were
merely seductive, that would be easy,” wrote Cancerian author E.B. White. “If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” According to my astrological analysis, your fate in recent weeks has been more challenging than seductive. You’ve been pressed to work on dilemmas and make adjustments more
than you might like. But this rhythm is about to change. Up ahead, life is seductive, welcoming and appealing. Are you prepared to drop any unconscious attachment you have to your interesting discomfort so you can smoothly make the transition to more ease?
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I want to prepare you
for the delights of the coming days. I want to make sure you are fully alert for them and primed to appreciate them. So I give you the thoughts of Leo psychologist Carl Jung. “It is important to have a secret, a premonition of things unknown,” he said. “We must sense that we live in a mysterious world — that things happen and can be experienced that remain inexplicable; that not everything can be anticipated; that the unexpected and incredible belong in this world. Only then is life whole.”
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Have you taken a refreshing break lately? Maybe even a soothing sabbatical? Have you treated yourself to a respite from the gritty grind? If not, please do so soon. And while you are recharging your psychic batteries, I ask you to give your fantasy life ample room to wander wildly and freely. In my astrological opinion, your imagination needs to be fed and fed with gourmet food for thought. For the sake of your soul’s health, I hope you dream up fantastic, unruly, even outrageous possibilities. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): My Uncle Ned advised
me, “The best gift you can compel your ego to accept is to make it your servant instead of your master.” An early Buddhist teacher sounded a related theme when she told me, “The best things in life are most likely to come your way if you periodically shed all hope and practice being completely empty.” The girlfriend I had when I was 23 confided, “You may get more enjoyment from the witty ways I confound you if you don’t try to understand them.” I offer these three ideas to you, Libra, because you’re in a phase when the moral of your story is that there is no apparent moral to your story — at least until you surrender your notions of what the moral of your story is.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I believe you Scorpios
are the zodiac sign mostly likely to benefit from being empathetic. By that I mean you have substantial power to thrive by reading other people’s moods and feelings. You are often able to figure out angles that enable you to gather what you want while helping others to gather what they want. You are potentially a genius at doing what’s best for everyone and getting paid and rewarded for it. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, this knack of yours will soon be operating at peak levels. orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ●● DEC. DEC.13-19, 13-19,2023 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY
