Orlando International Airports sees union flight attendants rally for fair contracts, against corporate greed

Dozens of union flight attendants for major U.S. airlines including Southwest, American and United picketed outside Orlando International Airport last Tuesday, as part of a global day of action spanning more than 30 major airports. Tuesday’s protest was organized as a call to improve industry standards for flight attendants. It marked a historic act of solidarity by an estimated 100,000 workers represented by three labor unions. Two-thirds of U.S. flight attendants — working for airlines including American Airlines, Southwest, United, Alaska Airlines, Omni and Frontier — are currently in negotiations for new union contracts. Many haven’t received a raise in years and are struggling with chronic industry issues that have grown worse since the beginning of the pandemic. Flight attendant unions helped advocate for federal bailouts for airlines during COVID-19 to protect employees’ jobs, but today, they say they’re not seeing that return, even as the industry has rebounded. “Airlines are making record profits,” Transport Workers Union Local 556 member Claudio Adams, an Orlando-based flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, told Orlando Weekly. “The people that are facing customers the longest are the ones least benefiting.”

New Disney World ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will open this summer

Gov. DeSantis backs limit to ‘bad-faith objections’ to Florida school books

Bills to ban Pride flags and protect Confederate monuments are dead in 2024 regular session

Walt Disney World announced its newest ride, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will open this summer, taking over the spot that once housed Splash Mountain. The new ride continues the story of animated film The Princess and the Frog. Riders will experience Princess Tiana’s celebratory party during Mardi Gras season to thank her family, friends and community in New Orleans for the support they’ve given her restaurant. Characters from the 2009 Disney film like Louis, Mama Odie, Lottie, Eudora, Prince Ralphie and Prince Naveen will also be included on the ride as animatronics — some voiced by the same actors as in the film. Disney also confirmed the ride will retain the same 50-foot drop that those who rode Splash Mountain before it closed in 2023 might remember. Splash Mountain was themed after 1946’s Song of the South — a film called out by historians and critics as racially offensive and full of harmful Reconstruction-era stereotypes about African Americans. Disney World announced its closure in January 2023, announcing its replacement with the new ride featuring Disney’s first Black princess and showcasing an important story of Black history and culture.

The flags bill, meanwhile, has drawn dispute as opponents contend it is designed, at least in part, to prevent display of LGBTQ pride flags. Under the bill, government agencies, public schools, colleges and universities would be prohibited from flying any flag that “represents a political viewpoint” including any “politically partisan, racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint.”

Florida bill allowing more teen labor on construction sites heads to the full House

A bipartisan committee of Florida lawmakers Wednesday unanimously approved a bill that would allow employers to put more older teens to work in the construction industry — i.e., an industry that drives the highest number of unlicensed activity complaints in the state and has a big wage theft problem, according to reporting by The Guardian. The bill (HB 917) is similar to another bill moving through the Senate, SB 460, that was written by lobbyists for home-builder and construction contractor industries (per public records obtained by Orlando Weekly). And it’s not just backed by Republicans: More Democrats — though none local to Orlando, so far — are getting on board with the proposal, which would allow 16- and 17-year-olds to work jobs on residential construction sites that are currently deemed too hazardous for minors under the law. The proposal makes up just a single section of a larger bill concerning Career and Technical Education programs and opportunities for students in public schools. Because it has cleared its three designated committee stops, HB 917 will now head to the full Florida House for a vote.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday supported a House proposal that he said is designed to limit “badfaith objections” to school library books and instructional materials. The issue of school-book scrutiny has been a political battleground in Florida in recent years. House Bill 7025 includes the imposition of a $100 “processing” fee for unsuccessful book objections. The proposed fees would apply to people who do “not have a student enrolled in the school where the material is located” and have “unsuccessfully objected to five materials during the calendar year.” During a news conference Thursday in Orlando, DeSantis criticized some book objections. “If you have a kid in school, OK. But if you’re somebody who doesn’t have a kid in schools and you’re going to object to 100 books — no, I don’t think that that’s appropriate,” DeSantis said. According to a House staff analysis of the bill, Florida had 1,218 book objections during the 2022-2023 fiscal year, resulting in the removal of 386 books, with the vast majority coming in Clay and Escambia counties. The bill, which also deals with other education issues, is positioned to go before the full House after getting approval from three panels. Meanwhile, similar Senate bills do not include book-objection fees.

Controversial bills aimed at preventing local governments from removing historical monuments and restricting the types of flags flown at schools and other public buildings appear to be dead in the Florida Senate. Gov. Ron DeSantis has in the past expressed support for both efforts, but clearly, the governor’s approval wasn’t enough. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, said she doesn’t expect the Senate to move forward on the monuments bill, and that the flags bill is stuck in a committee that will not meet again. Bill to provide free tuition for high-school dropouts closely questioned in House Education & Employment Committee BY RYAN DAILEY, N SF

bill that would allow people who have dropped out of high school to get tuition waivers to pursue diplomas and workforce credentials at Florida colleges got unanimous backing Wednesday from a key House committee. But some members of the House Education & Employment Committee raised concerns and questioned whether, as one Republican put it, the bill would give high school drop-outs a “better deal” than students who graduate. The bill (HB 7051) would create the Graduation Alternative to Traditional Education, or GATE, program, which would be administered by the state Department of Education. The program would be available to people ages 16 to 21 who have dropped out of high school. Colleges and career centers would be required to waive 100 percent of registration, tuition, laboratory and exam fees for people who enroll through the GATE program after other federal and state aid are applied. Students in the GATE program would have to maintain at least 2.0 grade-point averages in career and technical education coursework

and complete their education programs within three years. “Why are students leaving high school without their diploma or GED? How does Florida re-engage and serve this population so that they may gain the education and training they need to support themselves and their families?” bill sponsor Lauren Melo, R-Naples, said. Melo, who is chairwoman of the House Postsecondary Education and Workforce Subcommittee, faced questions Wednesday from Republican and Democratic lawmakers members about the bill. “If I understand it right, if you drop out of school, you can then go to a Florida college system, one of our what we used to call community colleges, for free,” Rep. Randy Fine, R-Brevard County, asked. “Am I reading that right, or am I missing something?” “If they do quit school, it works out to a few thousand dollars bottom line. But yes, we would pay for them to get their alternative high school diploma and certifications,”Melo replied, in part. “But if I don’t drop out of high school and then I want to go to a Florida college system

Florida Senate debates bill to keep children under 16 off social media platforms that utilize ‘addictive features’ BY JIM SAU NDERS , N SF

he Florida Senate on Thursday revamped a bill aimed at keeping children under age 16 off social media, as a debate continued about the proposal’s constitutionality and whether it would infringe on parental rights. House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, has made the bill (HB 1) a priority, arguing that social media is harming the mental health of children. The Senate Fiscal Policy Committee on Thursday approved a series of changes that were supported by Renner, readying the bill to go to the full Senate. “I believe that we have to do something to protect our kids,” Sen. Rosalind Osgood, D-Fort Lauderdale, said before the committee voted 12-5 to back the bill.“I believe we were wrong to

just turn our kids over to social media.” But opponents said courts have struck down similar laws passed in other states and that parents should decide whether their children use social media. “It is not the Legislature’s job to parent the parents in how they parent,” Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-Miami Gardens, said. The House overwhelmingly passed the initial version last month, and the newly revised version does not change the basic components. It would prevent children under 16 from creating accounts on at least some social-media platforms; require platforms to terminate existing accounts that they know or have “reason to believe” are held by minors younger than 16; and

Patricia Williams, D-Pompano Beach, continued the line of questioning. “If I drop out of high school, I can attend this program free of charge. If I come with a highschool diploma in hand, I have to pay for my secondary education,” Williams said.“Yes or no?” “I don’t think it’s a yes or no answer. Yes, you are correct, but we also have many programs that pay for students’ tuition,” Melo replied. Melo pointed as an example to the state’s Open Door Grant program, which can cover 100 percent of the costs of workforce education programs at colleges and career centers for highschool graduates. The bill also would create a GATE scholarship program, which would reimburse colleges and career centers that participate in the larger GATE program. The measure also would create a grant program aimed at increasing access to the overarching program for people in rural areas. Fine, though he voted for the measure, said he remained concerned about it. “I believe that if someone drops out of high school, sure we should help them, but we shouldn’t give them a better deal than the person who doesn’t,” Fine said. With the approval of the Education & Employment committee, the bill is ready for consideration by the full House.

The bill also would require platforms to use independent organizations to conduct age verifications when new accounts are created and would require denial of accounts for people who do not verify their ages. The organizations would be required to delete the data after ages are verified. But the revamped bill included changes in criteria for determining which platforms would be subject to the restrictions. The criteria would include issues related to algorithms, “addictive features” and allowing users to view the content or activities of other users. Also, for example, the criteria approved Thursday would include platforms that have “10 percent or more of daily active users younger than 16 years of age spending, on average, 2 hours per day on the online forum, website, or application.” Senate bill sponsor Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, said she didn’t know how many platforms could be affected by the proposal. But she said the bill is “content neutral” and focuses on the features of platforms. “It is about the features,” Sen. Grall said. “It is

The House passed the bills separately. Tech industry organizations and First Amendment groups have fought the social-media restrictions, arguing that they would censor speech and be unconstitutional. Gov. Ron DeSantis also has raised concerns about the constitutionality of restrictions. In addition, the bill has refueled discussions in the Legislature about parental rights, which Republicans have stressed on other issues. Sen. Jay Collins, R-Tampa, and Sen. Jay Trumbull, R-Panama City, voted for the bill Thursday but said they were struggling with the possibility of infringing on the rights of parents to make decisions. Central Florida’s Without Fear Theatre presents ‘Find Me,’ a new rock opera, at Fringe ArtSpace in downtown Orlando If you could meet your own

neurodivergence diagnosis in the flesh, what would you say to each other? That’s the provocative psychological question posed by Find Me, an intriguing original rock opera created by Central Florida’s Without Fear Theatre. I recently attended a rehearsal of the upcoming production ahead of its Feb. 23-March 3 run at Fringe ArtSpace, and spoke to Without Fear’s founding trio — writer-director Amanda Scheirer, composer-lyricist Dan Drnach and production manager Lern Morrison — to learn about how The Who and holiday-obsessed livestock come together in this “neurospicy” new work. Scheirer first became friends with Drnach a decade ago while working at Universal Orlando, and soon after she cast Morrison in her 2015 play, How to Say I Love You. Since then, the team has collaborated on The Unavailable Man-Magnet and The Red String: A New Musical, among other productions.“Any time we’ve had a project come up, we tend to go to each other,” says Scheirer. Their latest collaboration follows Allie (Laura Swindoll) as her life is upended by the arrival of a mysterious, mute stranger (Cat Cutenese, alternating with Jenny Ornstein at select performances). The stylized story is expressed through movement and minimalist dialogue, with Drnach’s four-piece onstage band (aka The Party Farmers) serving as musical narrators. It’s intentionally open to interpretation, according to Scheirer, who says, “We all agreed from the beginning to maintain the ambiguity. We want people to come in and be able to relate to it. If you have kids, you’re probably going to put that layer of parental relationship on to what you’re seeing on stage, and that’s good.” However, Scheirer reveals that the script’s

real roots lie in her relationship with her neurodivergent child and her own later-in-life diagnosis. “Through him, I figured out that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” she says. “But people can come in with any kind of circumstances and relate to the show. That’s something that we really like to do in all of our productions, is have it be that anyone can sit in a seat in the audience and be like, ‘I see myself on stage. I understand that story.’” Although the concept behind Find Me was newly birthed by Scheirer, the show’s modern rock songs — including the title track itself — emerged from Drnach’s personal archives. It’s instantly obvious that classic 1960s and 1970s concept albums are the foundational influences behind Find Me’s score, particularly Pete Townshend and The Who’s seminal rock opera, Tommy. “I’ll never hide behind it, from the first chord you hear you know exactly what’s up,” cheerfully confesses Drnach, who previously crafted the 2021 Fringe Critics’ Choice winner Cross Country. But he also points to Pink Floydian instrumentals, singer-songwriter-inspired “soft, delicate moments,” and especially a ridiculous recurring “Party Farm” punk-rock anthem as representative of the show’s wide range of musical genres. “I tried not to take it seriously at all,” Drnach jokes, describing it as “the Ramones, led by Fred Schneider, doing a children’s television show about animals on a farm that celebrate every holiday every day.” Audiences at Find Me can also support Without Fear’s fundraising efforts for the ARRE Foundation’s research into ASXL genetic disorders like Shashi-Pena Syndrome, of which

Scheirer’s son is one of about 50 known cases worldwide. And arrive early or stick around afterwards to visit the black-box theater’s gallery of creations by local neurodivergent artists, cheekily dubbed the “NeuroSpicy Art Market” after the trendy TikTok term. “A lot of times ‘autism’ or ‘ADHD’ or even ‘neurodivergent’ to some can feel very clinical and boxy, and I think ‘neurospicy’ is a way of taking it back [and] really championing it and making it something you can be proud of,”explains Scheirer.“You are in on the joke; the joke’s not about you, you’re in on it.” As an inaugural cohort member of Orlando Fringe’s Collective incubator program [full disclosure: My spouse helped design the program], Without Fear is not just getting to mount Find Me at Fringe’s Church Street venue. The trio has also been participating in months’ worth of educational sessions — including workshops on intimacy direction and entertainment law — aimed at developing their company for the long run. “All of the individual classes and workshops that we’ve been exposed to, these are practical master classes,” says Morrison. “We are given such wonderful pieces of information that we’ll put towards our company for the longevity of it, but also make us [hold] to a higher standard. Because I think that in theater in the last decade in Central Florida, there’s now an understanding of how we should be running things, how we should make ourselves more professional. et me just say that I’m not a brunch person. I’ve eaten too many lukewarm eggs, engaged with too many sleep-deprived and hung-over restaurant workers who looked like they’d rather be having root canals, and witnessed too many day-drinking twats using bottomless mimosas as an excuse to behave even twattier. No, I’ll stick to old standbys like lunch, thank you very much, which happened to be happening when I popped into Jack & Honey’s. OK, late lunch. OK, possibly linner. Anyway, the Thornton Park restaurant by Wendy Connor (an original partner in the space’s predecessor, The 808) and Jack Lambert, owner of brunchers’ paradise The Hammered Lamb, is fully invested in the ’tweener meal. It’s named for Lambert’s grandparents — Jack Quigly and Dorothy “Honey” Braham — who once ran a diner. They even procured the services of chef Hannah Wicker, whose restaurant experience at Disney, Universal and SeaWorld more than qualifies her to brunch things up all day at Jack & Honey’s. I’m guessing “Honey’s chicken and waffles” ($18) pays homage to Lambert’s grandmother — ’cuz it’s sweet (can I get an awwww?). But that sweetness comes courtesy of ersatz table syrup, not real maple syrup. There were also

giant wedges of butter all over the waffles — “it’s Grand Marnier-infused maple butter,” said one of our servers, but we could discern neither Grand Marnier nor maple in the thick chunks. We ended up eating the accompanying crispy thigh nuggets and moved on to the “wagyu” sliders ($16), but no one could tell us what kind of wagyu the sliders are. They’re certainly not Japanese wagyu; the sliders would be 10 times the price if they were. Australian wagyu, perhaps? Either way, these sliders would be gratifying hangover food. “They’re like smashburgers, but fat,” said my dining pal, referring to the crispy exterior of the patties, which came topped with Jack Daniel’s-bacon-onion jam, arugula and truffle aioli. The Parmesan-truffle fries on the side were just too dry; the freshly fried batch accompanying the pork belly B.L.T. ($22) was so much better. That B.L.T.? Well, it’s a pricey sandwich, but the focaccia is hefted with thick cuts of lardy midriff glazed with sweet soy and chipotle aioli; breaded fried green tomatoes lent a nice crunch — the only issue we had was with the wilted lettuce. Wet greens plagued the club sandwich ($15) as well. As we sipped on Jack & Honey’s cocktails, we had a discussion about how, too often, the

makers of handhelds underestimate the importance of proper crisp lettuce. Which then led to a discussion about the importance of proper-stiff mixed drinks — both the mezcal-based “smoke signal” ($12) and the espresso martini ($14) were passable but not stellar. One dish that seems to fly under the radar her is the airline chicken breast ($25). I was a bit surprised to see the chicken wing drumette for adults on the menu, but I was glad I ordered it. Everything about the dish — from the sear of the bone-in breast to the texture of the duxelles risotto and the garlicky haricots verts — was solid. It’s a down-to-earth dish that, honestly, soars. A boozy berry parfait ($9) made a perfectly functional dessert. I mean, what’s not to like about vanilla ice cream, pound cake, prosecco-soaked berries and whipped cream? And what’s not to like about the interior’s honeycomb/bee motif? As the kids say, it’s got drip. The bar is Jack & Honey’s centerpiece, just as it was when it was The 808, and Dexter’s before that. It’s got a welcoming vibe as well, drawing Thornton Park’s denizens in for a chill meal and some drinks. It wasn’t exactly a beehive of activity, but brunch at Jack & Honey’s could very well be buzzing. Not that I’ll ever know.

Sorekara, the high-concept Japanese restaurant built around the philosophy of appreciating all the unique moments of life, opens Friday, March 1, in the old Galeria Restaurant space at 4979 New Broad St. in Baldwin Park. The restaurant, from chef William Shen and restaurateurs Johnny and Jimmy Tung, will usher guests through multiple rooms with multiple meanings. “We want guests to think about their experience, and think about it for days and weeks after,” says Shen … The Tung Brothers will also transform Mills 50’s long-lived Tien Hung Market into Mills Market in three phases. Phase 1 was the opening of udon noodle house Zaru. Phase 2 will see a Japanese whiskey bar and some micro-eateries open by the end of the year. Phase 3 will see retail vendors, additional food components (like Obon Chocolatier) and a chef incubation program set up inside the market by the end of 2025 … MidDrive Dive, the midcentury-inspired restaurant and bar from longtime East End Market tenants Matt Hinckley (Hinckley’s Fancy Meats) and Jacob Zepf (The Neighbors, Freehand Goods), will begin serving its “elevated American classics” and craft cocktails Friday, March 1, in the old Graffiti Junktion space at 2401 Edgewater Drive in College Park … Indiana-based craft doughnut shop Parlor Doughnuts will move into the Cafe Linger space at 2912 Edgewater Drive next month. Parlor specializes in “layered doughnuts,” not traditional cake or yeast-raised donuts … The Café, described as an “art-filled crêperie and pâtisserie by day and a wine and dessert bar by night,” has opened inside the Alfond Inn in Winter Park. Coffee and pastries will be served daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and wine and dessert from 3 to 11 p.m. … Look for local Detroit-style pizza chain SoDough Square to open a third location in the same plaza as Valkyrie Doughnuts at 12226 Corporate Blvd. near UCF this week … Over in SoDo, Thai Spoon will take over the Pho & Roll (previously Pho Curry Ford — say it fast) building at 3334 Curry Ford Road. An opening date hasn’t been announced … In Belle Isle, Thunya Thai has opened in the old Chai Thai space at 5174 S. Conway Road.

NEWS + EVENTS The Michelin Guide added 19 restaurants to its Florida guide, five of them from Orlando — including Zaru, Camille, Sushi Saint, Chuan Fu and Natsu Omakase. Clearly the city’s strong pan-Asian restaurant scene is making an impact on the tire company … In addition to the Michelin Guide, Visit Florida has also paid Netflix to bring food show Somebody Feed Phil to the city. The Orlando episode airs Friday, March 1.

Poacher — Wildlife crime is the central theme of a drama series on Prime that tracks the illicit ivory trade across India. Executive producer Alia Bhatt, a committed environmentalist, is also the founder of the online platform Coexist. Nice that she’s putting all that bumper-sticker money to good use. (Prime Video) The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy — The misadventures of two extraterrestrial surgeons play out in an animated series that features the voices of Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne and all five Culkin brothers. But why does Kieran need a surgeon? I thought he had been successfully detached from those other guys. (Prime Video) Through My Window: Looking at You — Spain promises that this third entry in their Through My Window series of teen romances is the last one they’re going to send us. Which I guess means that even though Raquel and Ares are nominally with other partners now, they’ll be getting back together again by the end of the flick. Or maybe the twist is that they all go poly and the whole thing moves to Adult Prime for Chapter Four. (Netflix)

avigating the music industry is a balancing act for Los Angeles-based band Lany. Lany, the duo of Paul Jason Klein and Jake Gross, knew their entrance into the indie-pop scene needed to be one that was easy to remember. “When we first started the band, we just knew that we’re going to have to put the band name on everything, so I wanted a four-letter word really bad,” says Klein. “And I like the symmetry of it, and all the four-letter words in the English dictionary are taken already.” But what does Lany mean? Aside from being a four-letter word that rolls off the tongue, the

meaning behind Lany is more than that. Klein says that the name is a combination of Los Angeles and New York. “These are two cities on the opposite ends of every spectrum imaginable, different coasts completely. Different aesthetics and vibes but both are just incredible,” Klein explains.“They’re like pillars of our country, you know, for culture and progress and stuff.” With a name as symmetrical as the duo behind the band, fans find it easy to connect to Lany’s music. Last year, the band released their fifth album, a beautiful blur, which landed at No. 4 during its first week on the ARIA Top 50 and No. 120 on the Billboard 200. According to Klein and

Gross, full transparency with their audience is what has brought the two success. “There’s a lot of things we can’t control, like how people are going to receive any songs that we make. … I just find that the more honest I am about how it was or what it was like to go through these certain emotions, the better it resonates with people,” Klein says. “And so we just try to be brutally honest about it, right from a place of total transparency, and I think that’s what connects with people.” The band’s rawness and realness has resonated with indie-pop fans in the Orlando area. Since Lany began touring in 2015, they have made sure to bring their tours to Orlando on numerous

[ local music ] shortage of heavy music shows around Orlando, few represent it with such range as this one. Thrilling Chicago headliner Meth. specialize in harrowing noise rock that teeters precariously on the brink of sanity. Savannah’s Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir, however, will push you right over the cliff with their dizzyingly dense post-hardcore mania. Orlando’s Gillian Carter will sweep you up with their tornado of screamo, hardcore and metal. And local band Rose Madder will represent heavy rock’s melodic side. Whether it’s just him on the turntables or in star collabs with Orlando’s Q-Burns Abstract Message and Rabbit in the Moon’s David Christophere, Three has remained distinctive with his deep and cerebral house tendencies even amid a Florida scene that became globally famous as a hotbed of funky breaks. Few acts are rising with the heat and velocity of Orlando’s Warm Frames right now, but that reputation has largely been a live one. Now, however, they finally have a recording that measures up on its own. Recorded locally at Radio Information Studios by Mother Juno and Preston Hardwick, brandnew mini-album Pink Wax is Warm Frames’most concentrated work to date. While the December release of “N.Y. Girls” and “The Mirror” gave a promising glimpse, they couldn’t quite foreshadow the aggregate impact of this full collection, which is loaded with peak songs — some even better than those lead-off singles, like the swirling savagery of “Suburban Brat.” Warm Frames’ music is still an exhilarating freefall of punk, noise rock and no wave. But, from the songs to the playing to the production, there’s a new level of legibility in these six hit-and-run songs that renders their attack with sharper point. Like lightning in a bottle, Pink Wax is a head-on collision of arty cacophony and Stooges-esque animalism that manages to be simultaneously feral and focused. Pink Wax now streams everywhere. Tinnitus Rex: If you don’t know them, then “Afternoon Tea With Tinnitus Rex”sounds kinda charming. But if you do know Orlando’s Tinnitus Rex, then you’re probably chuckling at the very idea. While they’re an improvised rock band with a penchant for heavy sounds, they’re also known for their subversiveness (as their cleverly humorous song titles attest). So that means the billing is actually true and that tea will indeed be offered alongside the usual beer. Even more ridiculous is that little tea sandwiches will also be involved, all of which will make for a deliciously devious pairing with Tinnitus Rex’s loud, weird freeform rock. Pinkies up, freaks. (4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, Ten10 Brewing, free) Hiss Golden Messenger, Color Green: North Carolina’s Hiss Golden Messenger have built a distinguished career of deftly straddling the roots music and indie-rock worlds over the past 15 years. While they paint from a classic palette of Americana, folk, rock and blues, their left-of-center sensibilities have brought on artists like The National’s Aaron Dessner and Jenny Lewis to appear on their records. Their latest, last year’s Jump for Joy LP on Merge Records, is HGM’s most openly life-affirming work to date so expect some welcome, tuneful respite from the hell of modern existence. Be sure to show up early for young L.A. opener Color Green, whose expansive, psych-tinged country-rock sound radiates the same warm and golden American rays. Left-field NYC rap duo are finally touring behind last year’s stunning album, We Buy Diabetic Test Trips. This is a more loose-limbed undertaking for Elucid and Billy Woods, even by their avant standards. We Buy grew out of a jam session, and the free (jazz) and easy flow of the music spurs on the two MCs to ever-greater heights of space-is-the-place wonder. The finished album features contributions from everyone from JPEGMAFIA and EL-P to Moor Mother and Junglepussy, along with plenty of live instrumentation. But that’s not the only new material the twosome are touring behind. They’ll be previewing new material from BLK LBL, a surprise vinyl-only release this year with contributions from Dreamcrusher and Aesop Rock, and selling copies of the LP. Napoleon Dynamite Live

Indie cult-classic Napoleon Dynamite is celebrating 20 years [editorial spit take] of unforgettable dialogue and coming-of-age cringe this year, and Orlando’s getting a front-row seat this week. To mark the milestone, some of the film’s original cast members are hosting “Napoleon Dynamite Live” events at venues around the country, including our recently reopened Plaza Live.

The event features a screening of the film followed by a conversation with fan favorites Jon Heder (Napoleon), Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) and Efren Ramirez (Pedro) — who will all be in the house. Curated by trans drag mover Kissa Death, this second iteration returns to Thornton Park’s outdoor Veranda with innovative performers including Barbie Wire, Davi Oddity, Your Scary Godmother and Amnesia. It’s important to foster show spaces outside the downtown sector and, in that regard, you can’t do much better than the insurgent This Is Hasselberry fest returning for a second year. The lineup is beyond stacked, with young and promising performers like Feedtherightwolf, Mean Jesus, Knives, Watts, Shock and Awe, Fear the Light and KS23. Fast-rising young hardcore outfit Watts, in particular, are probably going to blow the roof (metaphorically) off the venue. The hosting spot, Castle Smoke, is definitely a place to keep an eye on as an incubator of young musical and creative talent in the greater Orlando area. Sanford Porchfest

Sanford Porchfest Music Festival is back with over 70 musicians playing on 18 porches Saturday. A generous handful of homes in Sanford will host various bands and artists on their front porches while audiences gather on lawns and under oak trees to indulge in live music, leisurely walking — or trolleying — from house to house.. There will be performances from jazz band BlueMoon, local blues institution Eugene Snowden, country singer Sean Holcomb, rockers The Smoking Jackets and (seriously) so many more, plus more than a dozen food vendors across the festival route. This free event raises money through donations, sponsorships, an art auction and merchandise sales to support the arts in Seminole County. The nonprofit Sanford Porchfest Foundation raised $52,000 at last year’s festival toward scholarships for local students, and they have high hopes of breaking that record. Dragon Parade

As we step into the Year of the Dragon — a year said to symbolize good fortune, prosperity and luck — here comes the annual Mills 50 Dragon Parade for a 12th year. The parade route starts at the corner of Lake Highland Drive and Mills Avenue, before going down Thornton Avenue all the way to Colonial. Local officials will lead the parade along with representatives of numerous Asian organizations and, of course, a serpentine and flowing dragon as the star. (That won’t be the only dragon onsite, though — the Orlando Magic’s mascot Stuff will also be marching.) Expect food vendors and music, too.
