» Smith files bill to make it easier to pass statewide ballot measures

State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, has filed a bill that aims to change the supermajority threshold that makes it harder to change Florida’s constitution. Under our state constitution, any proposed amendment to the constitution requires at least 60 percent of participating voters to approve of it in order for it to pass. Last November, a statewide ballot measure — Amendment 4 — that aimed to override Florida’s six-week abortion ban and legalize abortion up to viability failed to pass, despite receiving 57 percent of the vote. Florida’s Amendment 3, which sought to legalize recreational marijuana use, also failed to pass, despite receiving nearly 56 percent of the vote. Smith’s new proposal (SJR 864), a joint resolution filed for consideration during Florida’s upcoming legislative session, would change the required threshold for passing a constitutional amendment from 60 percent to 50 percent. It’s unlikely to gain majority approval in Florida’s state Legislature. But if it does, Florida voters would also have to approve it, since all changes to Florida’s constitution must be approved by Floridians themselves.

» Florida attorney general files lawsuit against Target over Pride campaign

Three days into his job, Florida’s new Attorney General (and former chief of staff for DeSantis) James Uthmeier announced a class-action lawsuit that alleges retailer Target did not properly disclose to investors the risks of a 2023 LGBTQ Pride campaign that drew a consumer backlash and caused a drop in the retailer’s stock price. Uthmeier and private attorneys filed the 163-page lawsuit in federal court in Fort Myers on behalf of the State Board of Administration, which manages Florida’s massive pension fund and other investments. The lawsuit alleges that Target made false and misleading statements about “Environmental, Social and Governance” and “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” mandates that led to the May 2023 Pride campaign. The lawsuit, alleging violations of a law known as the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, names as defendants Target CEO Brian Cornell and members of the company’s board of directors. Target has disputed allegations of failing to keep investors informed, saying it “repeatedly warned investors of the risk” of consumer boycotts because of some of its initiatives, including the 2023 Pride campaign.

» Florida Republican files bill that would allow teens to buy rifles

Amid a continuing legal battle, House and Senate Republicans last week filed bills that would repeal a law that prevents people under age 21 from buying rifles and other long guns. Sen. Jay Collins, R-Tampa, and Rep. Michelle Salzman, R-Pensacola, filed the similar bills (SB 920 and HB 759) for consideration during the legislative session that will start March 4. The bills would set the minimum age at 18 for purchasing rifles and other long guns. Federal law bars people under 21 from buying handguns. The Legislature and then-Gov. Rick Scott approved the ban on people under age 21 buying rifles and other long guns after the February 2018 mass shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 students and faculty members. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, was 19 at the time and used a semiautomatic rifle. The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the law, and the case is pending at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The House last year passed a bill that would have repealed the law, but the Senate did not approve it.

» Another Florida Republican wants to further weaken child labor law Republican Sen. Jay Collins of Hillsborough County has filed a bill that would allow employers to schedule minors to work at any time and for more than 30 hours per week. Collins’ SB 918 rehashes Republicans’ attempts during the 2024 legislative session to remove break requirements and scheduling limits for teenagers. Although the Legislature passed what was one of the most contested laws of last year (a law penned by a right-wing think tank that’s close to DeSantis), the final result required parents to sign a waiver for 16- and 17-year-olds to work more than 30 hours per week while school is in session and maintain a 30-minute break every four hours of their shift. Collins wants to remove the waiver requirement for older teens and let them work earlier than 6:30 a.m. and after 11 p.m. on school nights. SB 918 would also get rid of the breaks, and would allow employers to schedule 14- and 15-year-olds who have graduated from high school, earned a GED, are home-schooled or attend virtual school to work longer hours. While there are no federal limits

on the number of hours or time of day that 16- and 17-year-olds can work, kids 15 and younger can’t work more than three hours per day on a school day and eight hours on a nonschool day, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

» Florida Democrats file bill to repeal Florida’s six-week abortion ban Florida Democrats have filed legislation that aims to repeal Florida’s six-week abortion ban, despite not having the votes to pass such legislation. They hope it will create an opportunity to talk about the ban’s aftermath, at the very least. House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell is urging Republicans to listen to the majority of voters (57 percent) who voted up Amendment 4 to protect abortion access in November. The new proposal from Democrats would permit abortions until viability — when the fetus can survive outside the womb — which was the case before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Still, the Republican-led Legislature is unlikely to repeal the six-week ban, with Gov. Ron DeSantis celebrating Amendment 4’s defeat at the polls after directing his administration to use state resources to quash it. Democratic Sen. Tina Polsky of South Florida filed a separate bill (SB 288) in January that seeks to expand the exceptions in Florida’s sixweek abortion ban. The existing exception allows abortions beyond six weeks’ gestation to save the life of the mother or if continuing the pregnancy would cause substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function. Polsky has proposed extending the exception to prolong someone’s life and if carrying the pregnancy would result in a medical condition related to a major bodily function.

Former Florida House member Tom Keen launches a bid for Orlando City Council

Navy veteran and former Florida House representative Tom Keen filed paperwork on Thursday to run for Orlando City Commission this fall, after losing his seat in the Florida House last November to Republican State Rep. Erika Booth.

Keen, 68, is running for the city’s District 1 seat, which is currently held by city commissioner Jim Gray. The district covers parts of Lee Vista, the Lake Nona area, and the Orlando International Airport. Just one other candidate — Realtor Kevin Kendrick — has filed to run for the seat so far.

“I want to serve the community,” Keen, a 20-year Navy veteran and aerospace business manger, told Orlando Weekly in a phone call, citing that call to action as — in short — the very basic reason he decided to run for local office.

Keen, a Democrat, was elected to the Florida House last January through a special election. He lost his bid for re-election last November, securing 48 percent of the vote in a swing district to Booth’s 52 percent — a difference of roughly 3,600 votes.

Keen, who’s now running for a nonpartisan city-level seat, claims his Florida House campaign was “derailed by the Trump train,” due to higher voter turnout during the presidential election — and enthusiasm for the top of the

“I ran in this area before. I’ve got good name recognition. So I think that this is a great opportunity for voters to see a change here in District 1,” said Keen.

An Orlandoan of roughly 10 years, Keen formerly served as a member of the now-defunct Citizens Police Review Board in Orlando — a volunteer position — and also served on the mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council.

Keen admitted he believes there have been instances in the past where issues in his district were resolved long after they should have been. He named Lake Nona residents’ bid for a local library branch — a push he was part of — and lacking public safety resources in the Lake Nona area as examples.

“While the city has grown tremendously here in the southeast part of Orlando, we had police protection added, but we had no fire protection added,” Keen explained. “We were in danger, if you will, of being overwhelmed.”

Now a new fire station, to be built in the heart of the Lake Nona neighborhood, is on its way.

“The fire stations that we have sometimes are undermanned, understaffed, so we’ve got to make sure that those kind of things are taken care of first before, you know, we think about annexations and other expansion of the city,” he argued.

Keen’s campaign for City Commission has already been endorsed by a range of newly elected and seasoned elected officials, according to his campaign announcement, including freshman Orange County commissioner Kelly Semrad, public defender Melissa Vickers, school board members Maria Salamanca and Anne Douglas, as well as state electeds such as Sen. Carlos Guillermo-Smith, Sen. Kristen Arrington, Rep. Lavon Bracy Davis and Rep. Leonard Spencer.

then,” she told Orlando Weekly in a direct message over BlueSky. “The day AFTER session closed one of his aides called me and said he had gotten all of my emails but he doesn’t have time during session to listen to constituents.”

Keen also voted in favor of a controversial bill restricting social media use among minors under 16, as well as a bill pushed by the agricultural industry that banned lab-grown meat.

Cousins sees him as opportunistic. “I’m sick of these ‘dems’ only running for ego and not helping the communities they’re supposed to fight for,” she said.

Keen, for his part, defended his votes and defended his accessibility as a state legislator. “I would think that we were actually more accessible than any other state legislator in Central Florida,” he told Orlando Weekly, sharing that his team held satellite office hours throughout the district on a weekly basis. “We made a very big effort for outreach, and I would push back to, that we were not accessible.”

On the school chaplains bill, Keen said he reached out to the local teachers’ union and school board members, and didn’t hear any stark opposition to the proposal. Signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last April, the bill allows religious chaplains to serve as counselors in public schools for students whose parents approve.

“It’s totally voluntary for a parent or a student to participate. No one’s being forced to do anything. But to exclude religious groups from campus, that is discrimination. You’re basically saying that God has no place. That’s wrong. That’s not what our Founding Fathers intended,” DeSantis said, upon signing the bill into law.

ticket — affecting overall election results.

Election data shows turnout for the 2024 presidential election in his district was roughly four times as high as voter turnout for the special election held last January that secured him his short-lived term in the Florida House.

Keen said he believes the Republican Party also “put a huge target” on his back during his re-election campaign. “They spent literally millions of dollars on TV and mailers and things that were quite frankly disgusting misinformation that was being sent out,” he said.“So I think I ran a great campaign. That’s just the way politics runs sometimes.”

In his bid for Orlando City Commission, Keen feels more hopeful. “I think this is a very winnable seat,” he argued. “We’ve got a growing city here in Orlando, and we want to be able to prioritize the needs of working families and small businesses. So to me, it’s just a natural fit for where I was in the Navy and now continuing to serve in the community.”

It’s not his first bid for a City Commission seat. Keen also ran for Gray’s seat back in 2017, but came in second, securing 32 percent of the vote. Gray was first elected to the District 1 seat in 2012, and has held onto it ever since.

But Keen has also faced criticism from some who take issue with his accessibility during his term in the Florida House as well as his votes on some controversial bills.

Jen Cousins, a LGBTQ+ rights and education advocate and co-founder of the Florida Freedom to Read Project, told Orlando Weekly that she felt unheard as a former constituent of Keen’s.

An example that comes to mind for Cousins is when an 2024 anti-transgender bill that would, among other things, require Florida driver’s licenses to list a person’s sex assigned at birth, instead of their gender, was winding its way through legislative committees.

Cousins said she “called and emailed him multiple times asking for him to use his voice in committee hearings.” She claims Keen largely remained silent on the issue during a public hearing on the bill — still voting it down nonetheless — with the exception of a question about how the bill would affect Real ID at TSA.

Keen also voted in favor of a bill last year allowing chaplains in schools — a bill Cousins personally opposed because she worried it “could [be] used as a weapon against queer and trans students.”

“He NEVER responded to any of my attempts to get thru to him and we were on good terms

The American Civil Liberties Union, the National Education Association — a national affiliate of the local teachers’ union — and other civil rights groups disapproved of the law.

Keen did not respond to our inquiry on his vote regarding the 2024 social media bill banning social media accounts for minors under 14 and restricting access for Florida minors aged 16 and older. Of his vote for a bill banning “lab-grown meat,” Keen admitted he was aware that such products weren’t being sold in Florida anyway, but said he was “OK with voting at that first step.”

Keen said he and his team make a point to be present in the community “a lot.” He has been known to make an appearance at the rare picket line in Orlando, like the local picket line during the UAW strike or the recent Hilton hotel workers strike. In a state that is considered hostile to unions, with just 6 percent of the workforce unionized, any show of support from elected officials is generally appreciated by working people. Kevin Kendrick, the only other candidate who’s filed for District 1 city seat, did not respond to a request from Orlando Weekly for comment. Gray, the incumbent, hasn’t filed paperwork (yet?) to run for another term.

City commission seats are nonpartisan positions. Commissioners serve four-year terms and receive an annual salary of $76,292, according to the Orlando Business Journal. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

At the University of Central Florida, students are organizing their own events for Black History Month this year

Black History Month, an annual observance recognized each February, first emerged in the U.S. in the early 20th century, during the post-Civil War Jim Crow era. It wasn’t a full month dedicated to Black history at first. It began as “Negro History Week.”

Dr. Robert Cassanello, an associate professor of history at the University of Central Florida and scholar on African American studies during the Jim Crow era, says this played an important role in the South.

“During the time of Jim Crow segregation, this was a way for Black folks to develop pride and understand their historical contributions to this country, and to communicate to white folks that would listen what their historical contributions were,” said Cassanello, author of the 2016 book, To Render Invisible: Jim Crow and Public Life in New South Jacksonville

The University of Central Florida, where Cassanello teaches, typically recognizes Black History Month, too. After all, as Josh K. — an undergraduate student at UCF studying English Literature who asked that his surname be withheld — told Orlando Weekly,“This university has a lot of Black workers, Black faculty members who contribute significantly to the university’s daily function.”

It’s Florida’s largest public university by enrollment, with nearly 70,000 students and an operating budget of $2 billion as of last year. But students like Josh noticed this year that UCF had remained suspiciously quiet on the topic of Black History Month, despite publicly uplifting it in the past.

“A vital part of UCF’s culture is its focus on diversity and inclusion,” reads a 2022 online news post from UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, celebrating Black History Month.

That was before U.S. President Donald Trump re-entered the White House in January, and published an executive order threatening to defund schools that reject his new directive to eliminate diversity initiatives.

The tone on Black History Month on a federal level has, admittedly, been a mixed bag. While newly confirmed Department of Defense secretary (and former Fox News personality) Pete Hegseth last month ordered the end of recognizing “identity months” in the U.S. military, including Black History Month, President Trump hosted his own Black History Month celebration

at the White House just this week, striking a chord that was reportedly celebratory for some.

“One of the big reasons I’m president today is because of the Black vote,” Trump gushed at the event, according to Politico

Meanwhile, Florida’s Republican-controlled state Legislature and anti-”woke” Gov. Ron DeSantis teamed up to muscle through state legislation aiming to restrict instruction on racism and to gut diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from higher education.

As of this last month, there is no public message from UCF administration acknowledging Black History Month, and UCF’s calendar page for Black History Month literally appears blank.

UCF spokespeople did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Orlando Weekly for this story.

Liam Gundy, a 23-year-old sociology student at UCF, believes that UCF’s lack of acknowledgment of Black History Month this year — contrary to previous years — is likely tied to Trump’s anti-DEI executive orders.

“Those orders don’t mention ethnic history months at all,” Gundy pointed out. Still, “It’s not surprising that they’re kind of acting preemptively subservient to it,” he said.

Florida has been considered a leader of the recent targeted efforts across the U.S. by the right wing to remove so-called “indoctrination” and “wokeness” from education — an effort that critics have said, in practice, has a chilling effect on educators and restricts academic freedom.

“Bottom line: Big Brother is watching. He is taking names,” a University of Florida professor and self-described conservative reportedly wrote in an email to his colleagues.“I’m on their ‘woke’ list!” the faculty member continued. “I’m the faculty advisor for the Federalist Society, for the Law School Republicans, and for the Christian Legal Society. If they find me threatening, the rest of you are dead in the water.”

According to a 2023 report from the American Association of University Professors, other faculty around the state have described a “Kafkaesque” atmosphere and “an incredible climate of fear” following the enactment of the state legislation. Job security and one’s reputation as an educator, after all, are on the line.

Cassanello, a former president of UCF’s faculty union and a plaintiff in a lawsuit against Florida’s so-called “Stop WOKE” Act, said UCF faculty have largely avoided prodding UCF

about the lack of recognition of Black History Month, in part due to this climate of fear.

“You just don’t know what’s coming down the pipe from UCF,” he told Orlando Weekly. He posits that UCF is taking an approach of “anticipatory obedience,” a term described by the AAUP as “acting to comply in advance of any pressure to do so.”

“What we see with this DEI effort and ‘Stop WOKE’ Act and things like this, it’s an effort by the Legislature and the governor to really strip people of color [and] gender and sexuality minorities from the history of this country, in order to overemphasize the impact of white male heterosexual,” said Cassanello.

Students like Gundy and Josh, however, aren’t as willing to let threats from right-wing politicians erase or otherwise undermine observances like Black History Month from the UCF campus. The UCF chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists of America, of which both Josh and Gundy are members, is organizing a Black History Month event of its own: an “African Americans and Labor” faculty-student panel that will be held at the Student Union on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The United Faculty of Florida, the university’s faculty union, is co-sponsoring the event, because of its ties to labor. Panelists will include Josh K., a Black student himself who will be speaking on the history of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, formed by auto workers in Detroit in the 1960s. Others from around the region, including Seminole State College professor Trent Tomengo and UCF student Marissa Bellinger, will speak on topics such as the Harlem Renaissance and artists’ depictions of working people at the time, and early efforts by organized Black teachers in Florida in the 1930s and ’40s to fight for equal pay.

“In this state, where there’s been a threat to academic freedom, not only are there teachers here, but there are students,” Cassanello emphasized, harking back to earlier movements of student resistance. “It’s kind of remarkable,” he added, that students are going to be “sort of holding the torch” for traditions that the administration has walked back from.

Fabian Ramirez, a 22-year-old history and political science student at UCF, told Orlando Weekly that YDSA has also reached out to other campus groups to ask if they’d like to co-sponsor. He’s concerned that this silence from the administration could just be the start of a trend of “anticipatory obedience” moving forward.

“We wonder if this is also going to continue to next month, Women’s History Month,” Ramirez noted. “But yeah, for us, it’s a matter of celebrating diversity, celebrating history [and] celebrating academic freedom.”

Gundy said their group — reportedly, one of the largest YDSA chapters in the country — has seen an increase in membership at UCF since Trump was elected and took office. They expect even more students will be inspired to organize moving forward.

“We have the foresight to know that things

are going to get much worse, but are hopeful,” Gundy said. “As organizers, you know, crisis is a means of mobilizing social movements.”

Others on campus have also organized Black History Month-themed events, despite the UCF administration’s apparent silence on the matter.

The UCF student government is organizing a Black Business Showcase on Thursday, Feb. 27, to show support for small Black-owned businesses in the community. UCF organizations are also hosting a Black History Month All-Star Basketball Game at UCF’s Education Complex & Gym on Friday, Feb. 28. The UCF student government’s Black Caucus also wrote its own proclamation commemorating Black History Month.

Elsewhere, the story is different. Florida Atlantic University, located in South Florida, for instance, published its own blog post commemorating Black History Month. Even the Florida Department of Education acknowledged the annual designation, encouraging students in January to participate in Black History Monththemed art and essay contests.

“Florida is committed to teaching students about African American history and the role African Americans have played in Florida’s success,” Florida education commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. claimed in a statement. “I encourage all students to participate in the Black History Month art and essay contests and immerse themselves in Florida’s history.”

Cassanello, a tenured professor who’s less afraid to speak out publicly than some of his colleagues, believes that celebrating Black History Month is more than just a symbolic gesture.

“It’s really important that people recognize themselves in the history of their nation,” he shared. For a long time, he explained, African Americans, women, and gender and sexual minorities just weren’t mentioned or acknowledged. “So, for us, celebrating Black History Month is important to correct that, and give people a chance to see themselves in history.”

Orlando is a ‘great place to start new work,’ says New York writer-director

Ray Roderick, whose new musical, Brooklyn’s Bridge, premiered at the Dr. Phillips Center with an all-Orlando cast

For over a century, the engineering behind one of America’s most iconic pieces of infrastructure was credited to John Roebling, but in truth the Brooklyn Bridge could not have been built without the long-overlooked efforts of his wife, Emily. Her tale is finally being told on stage thanks to two decades of work by New York writer-director Ray Roderick. The world premiere of his new musical, Brooklyn’s Bridge, is being produced by the Dr. Phillips Center with an all-Orlando cast. Roderick spoke with me during rehearsals about the journey he and his production have taken from Manhattan to Orlando and (hopefully) back again.

“I was in a boy choir [that] was part of the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois, and my father’s a musician, and was very encouraging about anything regarding the arts and especially music,” Roderick says, recalling his introduction to the stage.“I kind of got hooked doing this thing called theater. One thing led to another, and I ended up doing more and more musicals in middle school and then into high school and college.”

Teenage stints performing in theme parks like Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, and Nashville’s extinct Opryland U.S.A. led to Roderick’s first big gig touring as Tom Thumb in Barnum with Jim Dale (“a force to be reckoned with”) and Glenn Close (“she is just the greatest [and] she was so kind”).

After the tour, his recalls his managers said, “‘We don’t want you to do musicals anymore, because you should be doing film and all that.’

And I’m like, ‘But this is what I moved to New York for!’” Roderick was in Far Rockaway,

Queens, filming The Flamingo Kid for director Garry Marshall when he got an opportunity that would change his career.

“I said, ‘I have an audition for Cats, and I’d love to go.’ [Marshall] goes, ‘OK, I love Broadway, I’m going to rearrange the schedule so you can go to your audition.’” Although he hadn’t danced in months, Roderick says,“I probably danced the best I ever did because I forgot to care, to be worried about it. I was just hoping I wouldn’t hurt myself.”

Pulled into a room with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Trevor Nunn, and choreographer Gillian Lynne, he was presented a newly rewritten version of “Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer” and ended up suggesting the song’s signature acrobatic finale. “They couldn’t come up with an ending. We’d already been doing all this physical schtick, and I said, what about something like [a double cartwheel]? We learned it on the spot, and they said, ‘That’s the ending!,’ and they created the music for it,” he says. “They did that new version on the tour, and they’ve done it everywhere since.”

After 18 years on stage, Roderick transitioned into directing and writing with the help of Mike Ockrent and Susan Stroman, whom he befriended while working on Crazy for You and The Music Man. Finding success with shows like his Irving Berlin revue I Love a Piano, Roderick first began considering a musical about Emily Roebling around 20 years ago, after randomly reading about her. “I ran into the story, and I’m like, I can’t believe that I don’t know this already,” he says. (This was long before Roebling became a subplot in HBO’s The Gilded Age.)

Although civil engineering might not be the most obvious subject for a musical, Roderick says, “In my head, the epic nature of the story

— how big the idea of the bridge itself is, and the story of how it gets built — is epic. And if anything can give you epic, I do think music is that thing.” So he turned to composer Joe Baker (whom he’s known since his wife, Karyn Quackenbush, performed under his musical direction in Broadway’s Blood Brothers). Baker set his lyrics to a score Roderick describes as “progressive rock, classical meets rock & roll, with a lot of Irish groove, what we would call pub rock.”

“When I started writing Brooklyn’s Bridge, I just started writing down some ideas, and the first song I wrote was ‘From Our Window,’ which is sort of the metaphor for the whole show, seeing this vision come alive through a window in Brooklyn Heights,” Roderick says, recalling how he presented Baker with his initial pages to pique his interest. “The first song he picked was the first song that I wrote the words to, [and] it was stunning. … We’ve been together for the last 10 years.” The result is a musical that Roderick calls “theatrical, with stories being told all the time, and my hope is that actors are acting all the time; they’re never they’re never just singing the hook over and over and over.”

The Orlando premiere of Brooklyn’s Bridge is a byproduct of Roderick’s experience with the Dr. Phillips Center’s Applause Awards for young thespians, which he’s written and directed for four years. “I feel like this show wants to be like a variety show, where we’re going bang, bang, bang, and treating it like the Tonys, even though it’s high-school students. I said, ‘Let’s add some cameras, let’s do an IMAG [video streaming] feed from the lobby,” he says.“We did it, and it’s gotten bigger and bigger, and it’s awfully fun.”

Through the Applause Awards, Roderick was introduced to Orlando talent.“I could not believe

this young talent; they are so much better than I ever was. … Something’s in the water here in Orlando. Maybe it’s Disney, maybe it’s Universal Studios, [but] it’s an interesting Mecca to me, and I’m like, ‘These people are super talented, why are we not doing more new work here?’”

Calling Orlando a “great place to start new work,” Roderick cites the attractions (especially Disney’s Finding Nemo show) for supplying several of his cast members. He also praises the Dr. Phillips Center for “doing the next new thing” by supporting his show, adding,“I think their eyes are really open for continuing to build what certainly is already one of the top art centers in the country.”

Though it’s been seen in development forms since 2019 — including a concert staging at Dr. Phillips last January — this production is billed as Brooklyn’s Bridge’s world premiere, and Roderick hopes it attracts attention from far beyond Florida.“We’ve got interest in New York, [but] I’m not talking Broadway right away. I’m talking more the next step in New York, [or] it could be another regional [production] outside of New York,” says Roderick. “Are we interested in going to Broadway? We’d love to, but that isn’t always the best path for every show.” As big-budget jukeboxes blaring branded intellectual properties increasingly dominate the Great White Way, I want to believe there’s still room for original musicals about human beings on Broadway. That’s a hope that Roderick also clings to. “I think there’s a real longing right now for a huge sector of the audience to see something brand-new with an original story,” says Roderick. “I think that the pendulum could be turning a little bit. I’m hoping, because we need everything to be possible on Broadway.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

LIVE AND LET FRY

Voodoo Bayou lends Sand Lake Road some true Crescent City vibes. And those beignets!

Theme restaurants get a bad rap from seasoned food gurus, and perhaps rightfully so. Motif and message so often hog the spotlight while food is relegated to a supporting role. Other theme restaurants cater to the young’uns (and the young’uns in us). So when a couple of well-traveled bon vivants I know — Kris and Chris — swore by Voodoo Bayou, its adult Crescent City flair and Live and Let Die backdrop, I was a bit surprised by the rec considering the restaurant is a chain (from True Grit Hospitality, makers of the very gothMex Calaveras Cantina) run by the ex-veep of long-shuttered BB King’s Blues Club.

“You gotta try the grilled oysters and redfish with extra chili butter,” said Kris. “And their beignets,” said Chris. Oysters, redfish, chili butter, beignets … hey, I was sold. Besides, with

Mardi Gras season upon us, the timing seemed right. So I pulled on Voodoo Bayou’s snakeshaped door handles and immediately found myself immersed in a space of dark, moody, Crescent City esoterica. I saw a couple seated on an elevated platform in Louis XV chairs with a pair of roaring leopard statues next to them. In a matter of seconds, the duo were spun around into a secret lair, just as Roger Moore was in that classic 1973 flick. I later came to learn that the false panel leads to Roka Hula, an Asian tiki bar speakeasy. Hokey, sure, but pleasantly so. I hadn’t made reservations, and we were on an hour-long wait list, so we checked out the hidey-hole bar long enough for us to know that sticking around wasn’t, as Solitaire revealed many times to James Bond, in the cards. No, Voodoo Bayou’s bar was a lot more our speed.

Plus, the barkeeps who tended to us were proficient and personable and made drinks with names like Blanche Devereaux Vol. 2 and Voodoo Child, which came stamped with an edible Jimi Hendrix. We thoroughly enjoyed the potent potables along with deviled eggs ($14) embellished with trout roe and espelette pepper, and the butteriest biscuits ($14) glazed with jalapeño-pear jam and honey butter. Seemed as though the kitchen had its mojo working, so when we took our seats in the dining room (those chairs are heavy, BTW), we were ready to have a bon temps.

Then I caught a glimpse of the Marra Forni “Voodoo Maker” oven in the kitchen. “Get the grilled oysters,” said the voice of Kris in my head, and these chili-buttered James River plumpers licked by the flames of hickory wood went down easy. Big easy. Another wood-fired wonder: redfish ($39) served on “the half shell,” that is, with skin and scales still intact on the fillet. The paint of chili butter wasn’t heavy-handed in the least, but crunchy, undercooked grains of Carolina white rice exposed a malison in Voodoo Bayou’s kitchen. More hard bits of rice plagued an otherwise honest serving of shrimp and crawfish étouffée ($28), earning its two-pepper designation on the menu courtesy of an infernal Creole sauce.

On another visit, crunchy (not crispy) kernels comprising the dollop of rice sitting in a very Prudhomme-esque gumbo ya ya ($12) forced me to eat around the kerneled mound, then set it aside in favor of a po’boy with prime rib ($25). Satisfying enough, but the crust of the French bread lacked any semblance of crisp, crackle or flake. You’re better off with the jumbo shrimp ($19) set in a fiery “Nola BBQ” sauce served with a grilled baguette, or perhaps fried green tomatoes ($18) topped with thick slabs of pork belly, pimiento cheese and tomato jam.

Both were solid recs from our very capable server who, like the bartenders, appeared to have a grasp on the importance of good customer service. And, of course, she urged us to end with the beignets ($12 for a box of five), which we were going to do anyway. Worthy? Let’s just say that when I paid a return visit to Voodoo Bayou, I ordered another box of these deep-fried wonders. Will very likely make a trip down to Sand Lake Road for yet another box. Eating one is filling enough. Eating two had me considering leaving my car in the parking lot and ride-sharing it back home. Eating three? Hell, one more bite and I would’ve met the same explosive fate as the Bond villain Dr. Kananga. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

COUCHSURFING

premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

A Copenhagen Love Story — A Danish couple desperate to have a child find their relationship tested by the rigors of fertility treatment. Speaking on behalf of our own country, you know what’s a real rigor? Needing to tell the cashier at Walgreens if you’re ovulating before she’ll sell you Twinings Nightly Calm. (Netflix)

Berlin ER — Now that Noah Wylie is back in the ER saddle again, we might as well let the Germans in too. Fatigued medical workers are the stars of this drama series, which shows how out of hand things can get when a hospital is overcrowded with emergency patients. Wait a minute: They don’t just kill them and call it “experiments” like they used to? (Apple TV+)

the suspects range from his fiancée to the owner of the flower shop where his corpse was found. As opposed to FTD, which guarantees everything will be dead by the time you see it. (Netflix)

Demon City — The Japanese comic Oni Goroshi becomes a live-action feature about a hitman on a revenge mission. The film is expected to ape the source material’s extreme violence — which should reassure fans of the genre, who don’t want to see the Yakuza going all soy. (Netflix)

Graveyard — As Season 2 begins, Turkish Police Commissioner Önem (Birce Akalay) is learning that the violence-against-women problem she had promised to curtail is still going strong. That’s a terrible turn of events if you’re reporting to the Ministry of Interior, but not so bad if you’re Mariska Hargitay’s agent. (Netflix)

House of David The makers of faith-based claptrap like Jesus Revolution and American Angels bring us a drama series about the life of the Bible’s King David. OK, Bezos, we get it: You aren’t going to stop sucking up until you get Instacart frozen out of Gaza. (Prime Video)

Running Point — Kate Hudson has to work twice as hard as a man to prove her worth as the president of an NBA franchise, in this series throwback to the “lady fish out of guyfish water” era of Major League and her mom’s Private Benjamin. Or, as Pete Hegseth calls them, “the salad days.” (Netflix)

Sosyal Climbers — Fun With Dick and Jane meets The Talented Mr. Ripley as a down-ontheir-luck Filipino couple pose as upper crusters to scam the real thing for $$$. And they’ve got their work cut out for them, because a country that grew up on Imelda Marcos isn’t going to be impressed with a closet full of Uggs. (Netflix)

Grammys. And they don’t just hand those things out like they’re candy. (So don’t get any ideas, Karla Sofía.) (Netflix)

Counterstrike — Five soldiers in the Mexican special forces have their back up against the wall when they’re set upon by evil actors who want to flood the country with drugs. Americans on vacation, amirite? (Netflix)

Dabba Cartel — A quintet of Indian women enter a world of unfathomable danger thanks to their bright idea of augmenting their lunch-delivery service with drug dealing. You always know something’s up when one of the curry specials on the menu is called “the Kumar.” (Netflix)

I’ll Be Right There — She’s been a mob wife and a drug-addicted nurse, and now Edie Falco plays a stressed-out bookkeeper who’s trying to keep her head amid the demands of her trying family. Funny, these sound like the kind of problems that overwhelm people before they discover drugs. (Peacock)

Squad 36 — A disillusioned French cop takes it upon himself to investigate when somebody starts murdering his old comrades. What happens next will shock you! (Especially if you’ve never been to France and don’t watch a lot of cop shows.) (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Andrew Schulz: Life — Fresh off a world tour, the comic walks us through the miracles and pitfalls of in vitro fertilization, operating at a level of keen insight and lived experience only a man can reach. Next up for Andrew: deconstructing the lies we’re fed by Big G-Spot. (Netflix)

Miss Italia Mustn’t Die — Go behind the scenes of the embattled beauty pageant to see if it can survive a combination of self-inflicted wounds and evolving social attitudes. Well, we thought they were evolving anyway. Next year, there’ll probably be a genital check before the winner gets to do her wave walk. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Cóyotl: Hero and Beast —When Mexican drug cartels go to war, preserving the peace becomes the mission of a young guy who’s half human and half monster. It’s such a shame that country has to settle for protection that’s only 50 percent supernatural, just because we wasted Dan Newlin on Colombia. (Max)

Dalah: Death and the Flowers — A candidate for the Thai prime ministership is murdered, and

Su Majestad — The good-for-nothing Princess of Spain is abruptly thrust into the responsibilities of the throne while her father the King deals with an embarrassing scandal. It’s like The Princess Diaries for girls who spent their quinceañera reading Politico. (Prime Video)

Toxic Town — Former Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker stars in a British miniseries about real-life mothers who sued their borough council for poisoning their children with toxic waste. Whittaker was a last-minute no-show at the recent MegaCon, so I think I speak for all of Central Florida when I say I hope those kids grew noses on their backs. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

Aitana: Metamorphosis — A documentary crew tags along with the Spanish singing sensation as she shows off the talent and determination that got her nominated for two Latin

Daredevil: Born Again — Charlie Cox is back as The Man Without Fear in this second streaming series, which is said to carry a darker tone than its Netflix predecessor. Maybe in this version, when he kicks the shit out of a guy in a stairwell, he’ll be humming Bauhaus? (Disney+)

Sin City Gigolo: A Murder in Las Vegas — Reality schadenfreude gets a poster boy in the person of Akshaya Kubiak, a former cast member on Showtime’s Gigolos who’s now in prison for brutally murdering a client. This is probably the farthest a streamer has gone to discredit one of somebody else’s shows, especially since that Friends reunion on Max sadly didn’t end with all of them offing one another. (Paramount+)

With Love, Meghan — Meghan Markle’s lifestyle series was already being called out of touch and tone-deaf in advance of its planned January debut, and that was before the California fires forced her to postpone the whole thing by seven weeks out of “sensitivity.” Talk about covering your ash. (Netflix)

NO REGRETS

Tom Rush has a lifetime of songs and stories ready for Judson’s Live

“I’ve come to realize, by the way, that 2025 is my 65th annual farewell tour.”

This is a joke that singer-songwriter and folk-music legend Tom Rush has been making for years now, but hearing it delivered directly … Orlando Weekly can’t help but cackle like a banshee.

Tom Rush is a storyteller by trade and, well into his 80s, he hasn’t lost a step. He’s got an admirably dry wit and a bottomless well of tales, evidenced by both between-song banter and conversation with Orlando Weekly. (This is the man who, when told he ushered in the age of the singer-songwriter, replied that this was a charge he “was never indicted for.”) And Rush is more musically active than he has been in years, touring and writing new songs at a prolific pace.

“I’ve written more songs in the past 10 years than in the first 50 years,” says Rush. “The songs seem to be popping out, and I think they’re good ones. Of course, if I write a bad one, you’re never going to hear about it. It’ll disappear.”

Orlando gets to experience this particular creative bloom on Friday when Rush plays two shows at Judson’s Live as part of a swing of Florida dates with accompanist and close creative collaborator Matt Nakoa. “I’m lucky to have Matt along for this run,” deadpans Rush, “because he loves to drive.”

Beyond his skills behind the wheel, Nakoa has helped usher in his new creative era for Rush, playing shows together and producing Rush’s latest album, Gardens Old, Flowers New, from 2024 — often knocking out songs in the first or second take. “I think he just got tired of hearing me talk about how maybe someday we’ll make a record,” says Rush.“He booked a studio and hired some fabulous players. Next thing I know, I’m having the time of my life sitting in this studio in Connecticut, and I think it’s my best album yet.”

That’s high praise from a songwriter who penned one of the epochal breakup songs in the popular music canon, 1968’s “No Regrets” — a bleak but clear-eyed lament covered by

the likes of the Walker Brothers (“My favorite because it put my first two kids through college”), Ultravox’s Midge Ure and U2.

“A girl came up from New York City, flew up to Boston and spent the weekend with me in Cambridge. I’d never spent that much time with anybody before, and when I took her back to the airport on Monday to fly back to New York, it felt strange walking away alone,” remembers Rush of the song’s genesis. “I went back to my digs and wrote that song, imagining that it was the end of a long relationship, which then actually came to pass. We had this long relationship and it finally ended.”

Beyond his formidable skills as a songwriter, Rush has always possessed an unerring ear for a tune. In the late 1960s, Rush recorded songs by then-unknowns James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell for his third album The Circle Game (named after his sublime cover of the Mitchell tune) on Elektra. Columbia Records promo copy in the 1970s would duly dub Rush “America’s song-finder.” It’s a quality he still cultivates, most recently in his webcast series “Rockport Sundays,” which sees Rush performing alongside old comrades and, crucially, young performers.

“Some of my guests have been my contemporaries, Jonathan Edwards and Tom Paxton and folks like that. But a lot of them have been youngsters, in some cases, people I’ve never heard of that came recommended. So I said,‘OK, let’s have them on.’ And they’re brilliant. So yeah, I’m back

in the business of trying to expand the audience for young talent.”

For Rush, it’s crucially not about nostalgia but the next thing.“I’ve always been more interested in what’s happening now and what’s going to happen next than what happened before. I’ve had some very fun memories of some wonderful experiences and some not-so-fun experiences, but I’m more focused on now and what are we going to do next. That keeps me engaged.”

And Matt Nakoa is a big part of “what’s next” for Rush musically. The collaboration almost wasn’t, as Nakoa wanted to get a little extra shuteye (initial response, per Rush: “Tom who? Leave me alone, I want to get some sleep”) when he got the call to show up to rehearsals for a gig Rush was headlining at Symphony Hall in Boston.

“Matt played on one song, and then he played on another song, and then he played on all the songs, because it just sounded so much better with his keyboard parts. At the end of the afternoon, I said, ‘Would you like to do a show with me on the 28th of December?’ And he said, ‘Oh, I don’t know, maybe. What club is it?’ And I said, ‘Well, actually, it’s Symphony Hall.’ And there was a moment of silence, and he allowed as how he could clear his calendar. That’s the first show where we were onstage together. Then a few months after that, I called him and asked him if he’d like to do some more, and we’ve been together ever since, it’s been just over 10 years now.”

On Friday, Rush and Nakoa promise a mix of new songs, old favorites, Nakoa taking the solo spotlight for a few numbers, and even a brandnew ditty. “It’s called ‘It Takes a Whole Lot of Liquor to Like Her.’ People seem to enjoy that one very much.”

Rush has a lot of history in Florida, and he’s happy to escape the lingering New England winter to revisit old stomping grounds. “Early on in my career, I took a year off from Harvard. I was about to flunk out, so I dropped out. I was spending too much time at Cub 47 and I set out to go to California, but ended up in Coconut Grove — geography was never my best subject,” says Rush. “I stayed there for some months, and David Crosby was there and a whole bunch of really talented people. I came in with a whole lot of different guitar techniques and songs and stuff that they’d never experienced before. So I was a sensation for about 20 minutes, until they caught up with it all.” Florida, it’s time to give Tom Rush another 20 minutes or so.

LOCAL RELEASES

In Orlando music circles, Chris LeBrane is what’s known as a man in demand. Over a local career of many years, he’s been a player in notable bands such as political hardcore hit squad M.A.C.E., funk-rap act Universal Funk Orchestra and alt-rock band Steve Garron and the Guarantees. It’s an expansive CV that shows many sides of LeBrane but perhaps little definitive direction about his very own musical point of view. That, however, is now unveiled in his full-length solo debut as Chris LeBrane’s Campaign.

Although solo in concept, this project is, in execution, actually a duo with Peter Lutringer, himself a noted local musician (The Aristocracy, Unit Shifters, Steve Garron, etc.) and longtime bandmate of LeBrane’s. The ideas are LeBrane’s but Lutringer helps realize them with input, guitar work, co-production and engineering.

Earlier peeks at Chris LeBrane’s Campaign have been scant, with only a couple of singles released back in 2016 and 2018. But now, after nearly a decade in development, they’ve finally and fully emerged with debut album Inauguration.

Like LeBrane’s musical career, Inauguration is a crossroads. The album is a synth-funk fantasy voyage that revisits the undersung 1980s intersection of R&B and new wave. These eight songs, which include earlier singles “Mental Love Affair” and “Galaxy: 80,” are a retro-futurist ride that gives new breath to the same lineage of sleek and silky vibes as Midnight Star, The S.O.S. Band and early New Edition. Inauguration is a consistently solid collection of single-worthy tracks that’s probably the best merge of synthesizers and soul heard in ages.

Although primarily a studio project, Chris LeBrane’s Campaign have sights set on becoming a full live act. Until then, though, you can indulge

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Hot 8 Brass Band: Few New Orleans-style brass bands can claim the reach and range of the Hot 8 Brass Band. The Grammy-winning crew specialize in a forward-thinking, funkpumped style that spices up their horn gumbo with hip-hop, R&B, bounce and more. A Joy Division cover? Yes, even that. Like their native NOLA, the Hot 8’s swing and stomp are irrepressible, powering through even unspeakable tragedy to cement themselves as one of the most innovative and relevant American brass bands with a wide collaboration list that goes from Jon Batiste to Basement Jaxx. This will be as legit a Mardi Gras pregame as they come. (7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, The Abbey, $25)

Deke Dickerson, Shaun Young, Willie Barry, Skinny McGee and the Handshakes: Between the soft-core indie folkies and the glossy bullshit of the Nashville industrial complex, it can feel like roots music is being drained of its soul in the race to the lowest common denominator. But the real stuff will never die so long as traditionalists like Deke Dickerson are around. A modern legend in rockabilly, county and Western swing, Dickerson is a revivalist of 24K cred. For this classic roundup, he’ll be joined by rockabilly dignitaries like Shaun Young, Willie Barry and local legends Skinny McGee and the Handshakes. This one’s for the true-school heads, no goofy-ass psychobilly camp here. Bonus for those with responsibilities: It’ll be both early and free. (5 p.m. Sunday, March 2, Lil Indie’s, free)

Left Lane Cruiser, Pentagram String Band, Little Foot: While Florida’s Legislature keeps attempting to outlaw the act of leftlane cruising, we still love Left Lane Cruiser the band. The gruesome Indiana twosome are modern-day saviors of the great punk blues tradition, carrying the torch with dirty slide-guitar action that sizzles like fatback on a hot pan. Their grease-bucket blues rock has been reliably nasty enough to make them a mainstay on legendary underground label Alive Naturalsound Records for nearly all of their two-decade career. Left Lane Cruiser are one of the last true punkblues greats alive. Joining them Wednesday are Missouri bluegrass satanists Pentagram String Band and New England folk punk Little Foot. Seriously, though, stop fucking cruising in the left lane, y’all. (7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, Will’s Pub, $15-$20) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

John Moreland

It’s been a few years since Oklahoma singer-songwriter and onetime 4AD Records artist John Moreland has played the Orlando area. A lot has happened in the meantime. Moreland tried out some new electronic hues on Birds in the Ceiling in 2022; he then unplugged from the smartphone grid and suddenly had an album’s worth of latenight laments that became 2024’s profound The Visitor. Moreland is ready to share those songs live with Florida audiences always eager to soak in his skeletal, world-weary Americana. He’s playing a few dates in the area and then hitting the high seas for the Cayamo music-fest-ascruise with the likes of Jeff Tweedy and Emmylou Harris. Next to Normal

“There will be light” is the kind of message many of us may need right now, whether you’re struggling to digest the current news cycle (been there) or have things going on in your personal life that are weighing you down (also). Next to Normal, a Broadway musical about one family’s journey with mental illness and loss, is playing at Sanford’s Theater West End for one last weekend — and if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss out. Featuring a small cast of just six, Next to Normal isn’t quite as depressing as our brief description above may indicate. It’s a drama, yes, but it’s also a dark comedy, offering a grimly realistic depiction of the trial-and-error process of finding a treatment that works for debilitating mental illness — featuring a literal rock-star doctor and many pills — and the impact of that on the family. Theater West End is a perfectly intimate venue for this production: a story of struggle, loss, acceptance and healing, where you’re likely to find yourself laughing, crying, and then maybe doing a bit of both. 8 p.m., Theater West End, 115 W. First St., Sanford, theaterwestend.com, $28-$44. — McKenna Schueler

Before the games begin, the Monster Jam Pit Party gives fans a chance to get up close and personal with the stars of the show, offering early access for those who want a head start on meeting drivers, snapping photos and checking out the monstrous machines up close. Attendees can also stick around after the main event for the post-event driver meet-and-greet, where you can hear straight from the drivers themselves and maybe grab an autograph. 7 p.m., Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bowl Place, monsterjam. com, $16.25-$100. — Camila Escobar

Ani DiFranco: 1-800-ON-HER-OWN

The first time we encountered the music of Ani DiFranco was spying a stack of her self-released cassettes at a feminist bookstore somewhere in Florida; it was a fitting introduction to an artist who has done it her own DIY and, yes, feminist way since the early 1990s. From impassioned folk-punk beginnings to sidestepping the music

industry with her own imprint Righteous Babe Records, to decades spent in the trenches of progressive political activism, 1-800-ON-HEROWN has one hell of a story to tell. This cinematic portrait of DiFranco’s long and fiery career screens one night only at the Enzian, ahead of her show in the flesh next week. 2 p.m., Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian. org, $12.50. — MM

Dancing With the Stars Live

Foxtrot and tango into a night that even Carrie Ann might potentially score a 10. The dazzling live tour takes quick steps into Orlando on Sunday, when audiences can expect high-energy group numbers, romantic duets — especially with Daniella Karagach and Pasha Pashkov dancing a sultry salsa on stage — and solos performed by a star-studded cast of professional dancers from reality competition Dancing With the Stars. The lineup will feature some of the show’s more popular performers, including America’s Olympic and Bachelor sweethearts, Stephen Nedoroscik and Joey Graziadei, with additional cast announcements to come. 8 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $59.50-$595. — CE

Role Model

Role Model’s newest album, Kansas Anymore, is an ode to the end of the artist’s three-year relationship with influencer and YouTuber Emma Chamberlain. Heartbreak hurts, but Role Model — né Tucker Pillsbury — has turned it into something beautiful. The indie-pop singer-songwriter brings this new suite of deeply personal and folk-tinged songs to the House of Blues Tuesday. Following on the success of debut album Rx, Role

Model’s latest release has already racked up over 45 million streams. Fans can expect to hear viral tracks like “Deeply Still in Love” and “Frances” (Chamberlain’s middle name — coincidence?) as well as older fan favorites. From selling out headline shows to making waves at Coachella and

Bonnaroo, Role Model’s evolution as an artist is undeniable. And with Kansas Anymore, Pillsbury is ready to close this chapter of heartbreak, one live performance at a time. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, houseofblues. com/orlando, $35-$75. — CE

Meet Kris!

Kris (A560751) is a 5-year-old dog, healthy and strong, but to us his past remains a mystery. All we know is that Kris came to us looking lost and unsure of what the future would hold. At first, Kris was timid; fearful of new faces, other dogs, cautious about everything. But our staff soon discovered that beneath that nervousness, there was a sweetness. He is kind, gentle and playful once he feels safe. He’s a dog with so much potential for love, but he needs someone to see him for who he truly is. His quirks? He’s been unwilling to share his space with another dog. He’s not aggressive near them, but he prefers not to interact. Kris would probably do best in a home where he is the only pet. The other thing we noticed is his obsession with toys — in particular, our large red plastic balls. Kris is a sweet soul, just waiting for the right person to see beyond his tough exterior and give him love and security.
