Former OMA director De Groft passes away, advocates urge undocumented Floridian immigrants to know their rights, proposed bill targets high school start time requirements, and other news you may have missed.

» Aaron De Groft, director of Orlando Museum of Art during Basquiat scandal, dies at 59
Aaron De Groft, the former director of the Orlando Museum of Art and subject of an FBI investigation over an exhibition of fraudulent Jean-Michel Basquiat artworks, has died. According to an obituary from his family, De Groft passed away at age 59 on Jan. 18, after a brief illness. De Groft was hired as director of the Orlando Museum of Art in 2021. The following year, he faced controversy after introducing a major show of what he claimed were lost paintings by Basquiat. Heroes & Monsters: Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Thaddeus Mumford Jr. Venice Collection opened to a positive reception in February 2022, but almost immediately incurred local perturbation when the New York Times ran an article calling into doubt the provenance of the works in the exhibit and reporting a federal investigation into the works and their owners. De Groft insisted that the paintings were legitimate. He was ousted from his role after an FBI raid on the museum. In 2023, the museum sued the former director for alleged fraud in authenticity and origin of the pieces, claiming De Groft aimed to profit off the fake exhibit. It also said De Groft claimed the owners of the paintings promised him a cut of the proceeds ahead of what they anticipated to be a multimillion-dollar sale of the artworks. De Groft counter-sued. His obituary does not mention the scandal or lawsuits.
» Orlando Health expands program to help people with chronic opioid addiction who end up in ERs
With the help of funds Orange County has received through national lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, Orlando Health has managed to expand an existing program they run at some of their hospitals to coordinate treatment and recovery services for people with chronic opioid use disorder (aka addiction). The program, available at six hospitals now (up from four), focuses on reaching people who have ended up in the ER or inpatient multiple times for drug overdose — a condition that can be, but isn’t always fatal. The program is staffed with specialized mental health clinicians and peer support specialists who aim to meet people where they’re at in their addiction or recovery efforts, even if that means just discharging them with Narcan, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose and prevent death. The vast majority of overdose deaths in Orange County — roughly 70 to 75 percent — involve at least one opioid, often the synthetic drug fentanyl.
» Florida advocacy groups urge immigrants without legal status to know their rights
Florida immigrant advocacy groups are amping up efforts to help people without legal status prepare for encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. President Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ eagerness to aid federal enforcement could have profound ramifications for Florida, where an estimated 1.2 million people without legal status live, said Tessa Petit, Florida Immigrant Coalition’s executive director, during a press conference. Petit stressed during the press conference that people shouldn’t let ICE agents into their homes without a warrant signed by a judge. A virtual Know Your Rights workshop, hosted by FLIC, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. A.J. Hernandez Anderson, director of Americans for Immigrant Justice’s pro bono program, urged employers to develop plans with immigration attorneys in case ICE agents come to their businesses.
» Florida Republican files bill to prevent golf course, pickleball court development in state parks
A House Republican last week filed a proposal that would prevent the development of such things as golf courses, pickleball courts and guest lodges in state parks. The proposal (HB 209), filed by Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, is identical to a Senate bill (SB 80) filed last month by Sen. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart. The proposals came after a massive outcry last year when the state Department of Environmental Protection released plans for what was called the “Great Outdoors Initiative.” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration paused the plans after bipartisan opposition. The Snyder and Harrell bills, which are filed for the legislative session that will start March 4, are dubbed the “State Park Protection Act.” They would bar the addition of such facilities as golf courses, tennis courts, pickleball courts, ball fields and guest lodges. They would allow installation of cabins that have a maximum
occupancy of six guests, though the bills would require cabins, “to the maximum extent practicable, be sited to avoid impacts to a state park’s critical habitat and natural and historical resources.”
» New Florida bill targets start time requirements for middle and high schools With Florida school districts facing a 2026 deadline, a Senate Republican filed a proposal that would repeal requirements aimed at later start times for many high schools. The proposal (SB 296), filed by Sen. Jennifer Bradley, R-Fleming Island, would undo changes that lawmakers passed in 2023. Those changes require that by July 1, 2026, middle schools cannot start earlier than 8 a.m., and high schools cannot start earlier than 8:30 a.m. Supporters have argued that the changes would help high-school students get more sleep. But the requirements have faced concerns from school districts about issues such as bus schedules. The Small School District Council Consortium, which represents small districts across the state, is also urging lawmakers to provide flexibility or waivers for districts where the start-time requirements are “problematic,” according to legislative priorities posted on the organization’s website. While the requirements apply to high schools and middle schools, they are expected to have the most effect on high schools. A 2023 House staff analysis cited a report that showed 48 percent of public high schools started before 7:30 a.m., and another 19 percent started between 7:30 a.m. and 7:59 a.m. Meanwhile, 83 percent of middle schools started at 8:30 a.m. or later, according to the report by the Legislature’s Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability. Lawmakers approved the requirements amid research that indicated older students are not getting enough sleep, affecting their academic performance and health.

‘A BIG PROBLEM’
U.S. Rep. Darren Soto says he can’t support the Laken Riley Act until it exempts Dreamers
BY MITCH PERRY, FLORIDA PHOENIX
AGOP-authored immigration bill that would force the imprisonment of many undocumented immigrants accused of minor crimes returns for a vote to the U.S. House this week after 12 Senate Democrats voted to approve the measure.
The Laken Riley Act is named after a 22-yearold nursing student who was murdered by an undocumented immigrant in Georgia last year. While existing law requires the Department of Homeland Security to detain undocumented immigrants only when they are accused of serious crimes like murder, rape, domestic violence and some drug offenses, the new proposal would require detention for smaller crimes such as
“That also violates the Fifth Amendment of due process. It’s important for people to understand that it’s already the law of the land that if an immigrant is convicted of a crime that they can be deported and so as we’re talking about trying to go over that line it becomes a constitutional problem, and a problem of fairness,” he said.
“Anybody could falsely accuse someone and then your loved ones, who are here legally as Dreamers under the DACA program, or millions of TPS recipients, they could be deported. So, we’re a nation of laws and constitutional rights, and so I have a big problem with people merely being accused and deported.”
DACA is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows young immigrants who grew up in the U.S. to seek temporary protection from deportation and have the ability to work. TPS applies to nationals of specifically designated countries that are confronting an ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions.
SPLIT THE DEMOCRATS
The bill — and likely other measures designed to crack down on illegal immigration — has the potential to fracture the Democratic Party. Newly elected Arizona U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego is one of those Democrats who support the measure, telling Politico there “has been this misunderstanding about where Latinos are when it comes to border and border security.”
Gallego added, “I’m here to bring some more real truth about what people are thinking … and so people here and senators here aren’t necessarily reliant on these immigration groups that are, I think, a lot of times, largely out of touch with where your average Latino is.”
“I’m happy to support border security bills and Ruben is one of my closest friends up here,” said Soto, the first U.S. representative of Puerto Rican descent elected from Florida, when asked about Gallego’s comments.
Florida Democratic Congressional delegation who voted against the Laken Riley Act, saying that “after enduring historic drubbings at the polls and bleeding record numbers of registered voters, FL Democrats are taking a stand … in favor of illegal aliens who commit criminal offenses against Americans.”
Soto insists he’s worried that the actions on illegal immigration that both the governor and President Trump intend to enact in the next few weeks and months could cause devastating harm to Florida’s economy.
“I think people need to understand the bigger picture right now,” said Soto, who represents all of Osceola and parts of Orange and Polk counties in Congress.
“Inflation’s low,” he added.“Right now, growth is high. Right now, unemployment is low and we have a strong economy. If they do mass deportations and jack up tariffs, it could collapse the Florida economy.
“A lot of folks in my area who did vote for Trump did so because of the increase in costs and they thought he was bluffing on doing these aggressive immigration matters. But if you really kick that up and you start kicking up inflation again, which is right now below 3 percent, that is really what is going to hurt your average Floridian and going to change things really quickly.”
Soto does believe that there are a variety of issues he can work with Trump on, such as infrastructure, the CHIPS & Science Act, border security and the federal budget.
But he said the biggest battle lines for him will be to stop the promised mass deportations and tariffs from the new administration that he fears will ruin the state’s economy.
He’s also concerned the Trump administration might try to stop the federal subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which recent federal data indicate more than 4.6 million Floridians are enrolled in, the most in the nation.
shoplifting, burglary, larceny and theft. It would also give state attorneys general broad discretion to challenge federal immigration policy if enacted into law.
While the measure has received some bipartisan support so far in both chambers of Congress, Central Florida Democratic Rep. Darren Soto says the measure needs to be amended to exempt “Dreamers” and those on Temporary Protected Status before he can get behind it.
“We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of family members of U.S. citizens in Florida who could simply be falsely accused and then deported,” he told the Phoenix during a phone conversation Tuesday.
“We already voted for authorizing tens of thousands of new border agents in the last budget,” he said. “And we’re going to continue to work on technology to make sure that we have border awareness. I think the key is that we have to see how Dreamers and TPS recipients shake out. We have a huge amount of those [people] in our area, especially Venezuelans with TPS as well as Haitians. So, we have different interests, right? But I agree with the senator that we need to continue to work together on border awareness and border security. He and I may just have a disagreement with what we do with folks who are merely accused [of a crime].”
The bill is opposed by groups such as the ACLU, which called on members of the Senate last week to oppose the measure “because it would require the government to detain people who have not been convicted or even charged with a crime.”
DESANTIS ATTACKS
On X last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis chided Soto and the other five members of the
JAN. 6 PARDONS
The Democrat absolutely draws the line when it comes to the new president’s sweeping pardons on Monday night of approximately 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants, including rioters who attacked law enforcement officers.
“On Day One, Trump sided with criminals over law enforcement,” he said. “I was in the Capitol on Jan. 6. Capitol Police saved my life against a violent insurrection. And if he’s trying to make a case that he’s ‘Mr. Law & Order,’ he abundantly failed in that.”
Soto said he opposed President Biden pardoning his son, Hunter, but supports Biden’s pardons for Americans like Dr. Anthony Fauci. “He had to do what he had to do as a practical matter for America’s doctor,” he said. “Someone who has saved millions of lives has been unfairly politicized by the right.”

SAYING GOODBYE
Ivanhoe village mainstay Hammered Lamb says ‘so long’ with a big, emotional all-day party
BY MATTHEW MOYER AND J.D. CASTO
By early evening on Saturday, Jan. 25, the scene at Ivanhoe Village staple and LGBTQ+ haven the Hammered Lamb had a distinctly party-at-the-end-of-the-world feel to it, complete with a soundtrack that jumped in delightful chaos from 1980s Cher singles to early Christina Aguilera to party rap to nü-metal. (And back.) People were everywhere, tightly packed in, dancing, laughing, drinking and crying. It felt like the end of an era.
This particular party had been raging since the familiar weekend brunch festivities early in the day. Said party continued into happy hour and would stretch through the night — and then the party would be over for good. Saturday, you see, was both the 12th anniversary celebration and the last hurrah for this storied spot.
Open since 2013, this Ivanhoe Village staple drew in Orlandoans with over-the-top brunch dishes, Bloody Marys that consistently topped Best of Orlando™ Readers Polls, drag shows, train shots, late nights and high-energy events hosted on the sprawling patio. Beyond the party atmosphere, though, the Lamb was a safe haven for the local LGBTQ+ community, and the bar
last marathon weekend party.
Things kicked off with the final brunch in the early afternoon. The spot was bustling despite the chill of actual winter in the air. The crowd was a fantastic mix of regulars, staff families, arts movers, elected officials and those in search of a party all showing up to raise a glass to the legendary venue. There were plenty of hugs, a never-ending flow of drinks, and even a few tears from those who couldn’t imagine Orlando without it. Blue Star gave a touching toast to the afternoon crowd, adding a special note of sentiment to the festivities, while live entertainment kept the vibe lively and nostalgic. But conversations over drinks also had an undercurrent of frustrations — frustration over losing another queer space in a city that already has too few.
of the queer community and he knows who we are. He’s given beyond this space — he supports all of the community.”
Stepping out on the sidewalk to get a momentary respite from “Genie in a Bottle” cranked to 11, we talked to Nikki Price, a former employee who came back to see the place one last time. “It’s emotional. Overwhelming. Sad. I came from Jacksonville — I don’t live here anymore — just to be a part of something I helped grow,” Price said.“I wanted to say goodbye to something that has inspired me so much. Being a part of this community was so important. I’ve never felt the level of community I’ve felt here, ever.”
gave back to the community in kind, donating space, time, spirits and funds as needed to seemingly countless grassroots organizations and progressive candidates.
But times had been tough at the Lamb for the last couple of years. Though it had weathered the storm of COVID, a seemingly eternal road construction project shut down and effectively blocked off stretches of Orange Avenue along the main drag of Ivanhoe Village, making it difficult, if not impossible, to access Hammered Lamb and many of their neighbors. Then an unfortunate error in the Orlando Sentinel ascribed a host of restaurant health and safety violations and an ordered shutdown to the Lamb, rather than the restaurant that actually incurred the violations (Ethos Vegan Kitchen, which was once located in the space). Fundraisers were held and regulars rallied, while the staff and owner Jason Lambert remained optimistic they would make it through.
Then Hammered Lamb announced an abrupt and very imminent closure last Monday on social media. True to form — and Sinatra lyrics — they were going to go out their way: with one
Many stayed on as the sun set and Remeice the DJ started spinning an eclectic set that took in pop hits across decades slamming up against one another. Inside and out, the bar was packed with folks dancing, drinking and reminiscing.
“It’s the end of an era. I’m sad. I’m just sad. There’s always good times here,” said reveler Tyler Mann, who showed up in a distressed Hammered Lamb T-shirt with a group of friends. “Everybody knows everybody, or it feels like they do. Everybody loves each other, that’s the biggest thing.” He then told us we looked like someone from Bring Me the Horizon, so it was time to move on.
Weaving past a person with long hair, several hats and a white, sequined floor-length coat, we ran into Heather Wilkie from the Zebra Coalition. “Tonight has been overwhelmingly sad, but also beautiful because this community came together and celebrated a safe space that has been so important to our queer community,” she said. “Jason Lambert has done such an amazing job here, we’re sad it has to end. I worry about our future. What’s going to happen next? What’s going to close next? We spent years building spaces like this up and it’s so sad to see it go away. … Jason Lambert has been so supportive
There was a constant blur of motion and people around owner Jason Lambert, but we finally made our way over to him. He was very candid about how he’s feeling.
“It’s been great, but it’s been very bittersweet. I’m feeling sad and depressed,” Lambert said. “We’ve done so much here the last 12 years, but I feel like I failed, I’ve failed the city. But then, the city failed us too. For a whole entire year the street was shut down, and I reached out to so many elected officials and I got crickets. I feel like the city should have done a better job of managing it and putting it together. When COVID happened we got federal funding to help us; when this happened we didn’t get shit.”
As the night stretched on, alcohol and mixers started running out, and the crowd thinned out a bit though night owls kept entering. But the DJ kept playing, the bartenders kept pouring whatever was left, and the people lingered.
If it felt like the end of an era, not just of one singular space, that’s because it very much was. But the community Lambert and his team fostered in Orlando lives well beyond the Lamb’s walls, and that community will keep on working to better the city.
The Hammered Lamb, as you read this, is in the final stages of an “everything must go” sale of kitchen and bar equipment, ending Wednesday. feedback@orlandoweekly.com

ROLL UP
Enjoy the handrolls, the vibe and the ride at Mosonori in Winter Park
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Kabooki Sushi is always a vibe — the flow, the fish, the drip, the whips — and that’s the way chef-owner Henry Moso likes it. I’ve gawked hard at the sick fleet of high-powered automobiles parked out front of both the Colonialtown and Sand Lake outposts, and been late for my reservation on a couple of occasions as a result. So it seems more than fitting that Moso’s new handroll bar sits directly across the street from the soon-to-open McLaren dealership on Orlando Avenue in Winter Park. I can already see fast and furious collabs in Moso’s future — pricey parties where perhaps Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri nibble on “F1 Constructors’ Champion” handrolls stuffed with salmon the color of McLaren Racing Orange.
I’ve charged through a field of fish-filled handrolls since Mosonori opened back in November, swallowing up everything from Faroe Island salmon glistening with white soy to aged branzino delicately slicked with shio and yuzu oil. Moso sets it all into sushi rice tinged with just the right amount of warmth. But the rolls weren’t perfect in those early days; I had an issue with the nori itself. Moso was using a premium product from Yamamotoyama and toasting it before wrapping and serving. But the first bite, the bite that matters most when it comes to handrolls, was just too chewy. It tainted, perhaps unfairly, the high-class ingredients inside the tubular rolls. (Rolls at Mosonori aren’t conical in shape, as Moso would prefer every bite to be uniform and balanced.)

Not one to accept mediocrity, Moso searched New York and Miami until he happened upon a very reputable importer based in the northeast who brought Moso into his very tight circle. Long story short, the nori Moso now uses is of unmatched quality, grown and harvested in the Ariake Sea and processed by a small local producer in Fukuoka, Japan. “It’s very hard to source good nori right now,” this individual importer told me, “but the nori Moso is using is definitely of the highest quality, and it’s not sold in the United States.”
A difference-maker? Judging from every face I saw seated at the gorgeous horseshoe-shaped bar (kudos to GDP Designbuild for the stunning interior), they were loving nori v2.0. “I don’t even need to toast it, it’s that good,” says Moso. And it truly is. I’ve had rolls with hamachi, white soy and shallots, and rolls with lobster lushed with mentaiko mayo, then had them again. And as great as those ingredients are, it’s the nori’s wispy crackle and briny aroma that lingers.
As far as those rolls, your best option is to go with a set menu ($19 for three rolls; $25 for four; $30 for five; $36 for six) so you get a variety of options that won’t break the bank. Other faves of mine: fatty ko-ika (golden cuttlefish) spiked with house hot sauce, king crab with mustard mayo, toro flecked with chives and crunched with takuan (pickled Japanese radish) and wagyu cooked with shallots. There’s an “omakase” ($38) option that gets you five rolls along with a hamachi tasting — slivers of yellowtail set in ponzu and yuzu oil garnished with serrano peppers — that’ll leave you gratified. I’m preferential to the toro tartare ($14) as far as tastings go. The fatty fish, the crunch of bubu arare and the punch of truffle ponzu is why I get it every time I go. That and a bottle of Dassai 45 sake ($45) that effortlessly pairs with damn near everything offered at Mosonori. Now, the idea behind handroll bars is to enjoy a quick meal and get out. But most of Mosonori’s patrons have been lingering for upward of an hour, and I don’t blame them one bit. The driving soundtrack, handsome digs and people-watching-friendly layout makes it hard to just dine and dart out of there. Hell, I too have been guilty of parking my seat at the bar for bit too long. I’ve even felt bad about it, considering Mosonori has no reservation policy. What can I say? Eating for me is often an exercise in endurance, and hardly ever a race.

Simpson — If a broken leg didn’t enable you to spend six months of the halcyon days of 1995 glued to the TV watching the goings-on in Judge Lance Ito’s courtroom (true story!), here’s your chance to learn all about what we considered the Trial of the Century before Amber Heard decided that getting up to use the john isn’t always the play. Viewers who were not alive at the time may be surprised to learn that OJ didn’t really look all that much like Cuba Gooding Jr. (Netflix)
The Hooligan — A Polish ne’er-do-well is released from prison just in time to see his son taking up his mantle of lawlessness — and for their favorite football team’s rivalry with another squad to sink to a new low of violence. Orlando could be having fun like this, but nobody’s willing to drive a Cybertruck to the front office of Inter Miami. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
Mermicorno: Starfall — The tokidoki “lifestyle brand” scores its first animated series with the undersea adventures of a character who’s half mermaid and half unicorn. At least that’s what Badtz-Maru says to avoid paying child support. (Max)
Mo — This second season is the last for Mo Amer’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy series about a Palestinian family seeking permanent asylum in America. See, once again Netflix is ahead of the curve, because they’ve never considered any of their series to have birthright citizenship. (Netflix)
The Recruit Season 2 — After a hiatus of just over two years, CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) is back, this time to tamp down some serious ish that’s going down in South Korea. Let me guess: America is trying to wriggle out of carrying that third season of Squid Game. (Netflix)
The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse — Fans are expecting about 50 chapters of the source manga to be covered in this Season 2, as Percival the knight comes closer to fulfilling his destiny of destroying the world. Hey, remember when we couldn’t understand why that made him a hero? (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Dark Match — Chris Jericho stars in a horror flick about a wrestling operation that runs afoul of a cult of dangerous fanatics. Right, because WWE fans are nothing of the sort. (Shudder)
Mythic Quest — Our team of game developers faces fresh trials in Season 4, including a stepped-up effort to find the proverbial work-life balance. As opposed to gamers themselves, who are mostly concerned with balancing virginity and pizza rolls. (Apple TV+)
Six Nations: Full Contact — Season 2 of the rugby docuseries delves even deeper into the athletic and personal lives of star players like Marcus Smith, England’s fly-half. Can’t wait for the expert analysis by Jeff Goldblum, America’s half-fly. (Netflix)
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man — Marvel wants you to understand that this new animated series about the web-slinger’s formative years is not in continuity with the Tom Holland films. Or with Sony’s VillainVerse. Or the theatrical Spider-Verse. Level with us, fellas: What is still canon at this point? The Charles Atlas ad in “Amazing Fantasy 15”? (Disney+)
The Eastern Gate — The fragility of NATO is the leitmotif of this Polish espionage drama, which puts a Secret Service agent (Lena Góra) on the hunt for her vanished partner. Fragility? That’s an understatement. I don’t know what’s going to last longer, this season or NATO. (Max)
Lucca’s World — Barbara Anderson’s book The Two Hemispheres of Lucca is the foundation for a dramatization of her family’s pilgrimage to India, where they pursued a revolutionary treatment for her son’s cerebral palsy. What, they’ve never heard of Ivermectin? (Alternate joke: The story takes an unexpected turn when Suzanne Vega learns the kid is getting the shit beat out of him.) (Netflix)
The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game — Season 2 adds Miki Esparbé to the cast, as a fellow journalist who joins Milena Smit’s Miren Rojo in investigating the killing of two young girls. Fun fact: Setting the story in a world where a newspaper can afford to assign two reporters to the same story qualifies the movie for a nomination as science fiction at the next Saturn Awards. (Netflix)

Inside the fantasy of Florida Dungeon Fest
BY TYLER BARNEY
“I’d love to see an active live FLDS scene taking shape and growing entirely independent of my organization.”
While you may be hard-pressed to find a functional basement in Florida, the Sunshine State still has its fair share of underground goings-on. Our latest subterranean endeavor comes in the form of Florida Dungeon Fest, an aptly named gathering of spirits seeking the type of sonic bliss only certain strains of lo-fi synth can provide. The two-day event unites over a dozen artists from across the country in celebration of all things dungeon synth, a sub-subgenre of electronic music with black metal roots tracing back to Norway’s Lords of Chaos days of the early 1990s. Guests of the Fest can expect tunes ranging from giddy to grim, with a heavy helping of nostalgia for good measure: Think Super Mario Bros supping at Medieval Times and you’re in the right castle. Collaboratively curated by Austinbased label Engraven Records and locals Spark Booking Collective, the lineup features a gauntletful of artists from the Texas synth elite. Among the Lone Star Statesman of the fantasy-themed festival is the endlessly charming Assorted Potions, helmed by one known only as “The Threadmage.” The sounds in stock from
this act are top-shelf storytelling goods sure to set imaginations ablaze. Fellow Austinite Lost Tales take a page from the classic DS style with warm ’n’ warbly synth for the sentimental, while Goblet Grotto’s chalice-tipping chiptunes offer a cozy toast to break up the standard fare. Enough messin’ with Texas (for now): Comfy synth heads will rest easier to the soothing sounds of Tennessee’s Spife, while Philly’s Shadow Knell take a break from their day job in Poison Ruïn to enchant us with a mystical slice of dark ambience by way of dungeon synth. Save a “hails” for Hillsfar (a wizard from whoknows-where) and your mystical maestro Maalthir will return the favor with a serving of “adventure synthesizer musick”— aka old-school DS done damn well. While you’re at it, lend a listen to New York’s Hermit Knight if you’re in the market for a somber serving of “emotional fantasy synth music” to tickle your forlorn fancies. And now, in conversation with the dungeon masters of Spark Booking and Engraven Records, we raise the curtain for a peek at the approaching Fest and the future of dungeon synth in Florida.
Orlando Weekly: How did the Fest originate? Engraven Records: Dungeon synth pulls from many realms — metal, fantasy, horror,

ER: Artists were selected from those I’d worked with for last year’s Texas Dungeon Siege or other DS shows I’ve organized in Texas. I started with Florida and worked my way out from there on the map, inviting those who lived in the nearest states first to play. There aren’t as many live DS acts from the Southeast yet as there are from the other regions so, by the last few spots on the bill, I’d worked all the way out to some of the Great Lakes- and Northeast-located artists. I was thrilled to discover two new artists during the process, Angmaar in Orlando and Vorlauf in the Pinellas area, to represent Central Florida.
How does a DS festival differ from other music shows you’ve booked?
medievalism, DIY, video games, and even new age, ambient and industrial music — for which Florida seems like a strong nexus point. Some places need to have live DS explained to them; I think Florida is going to take naturally to it. I’d been wanting to set something up [here] for a while and saw Chris (of the band Angmaar) posting online about wanting to do the same thing, so I reached out to see what he had in mind and he put me in touch with Zeke (of Spark Booking), who would be our promoter with local ties to Central Florida live music while I spread the word in the greater DS community. There is already an excellent Southeast Dungeon Scourge series of shows that technically would regionally encompass Florida, but there had yet to be anything in the state itself. I was interested in homing in specifically on Central Florida. So FDF is a smaller festival focused on bringing people with similar interests in this area together and jump-starting a local FLDS scene.
Zeke/Spark Booking: Throughout the years I’ve been helping to promote events, I’ve always tried to embrace the niche and unusual. Dungeon synth is exactly that — and it’s also something I haven’t worked with before. That’s intriguing to me as a musician, and also because it poses unique challenges in the booking process. When Chris (Angmaar) reached out to form the bridge between Engraven Records and myself, I was more than thrilled about it. The Fest came about naturally as we spoke and exchanged knowledge, agreeing that Orlando/Central Florida would be more than accepting to the atmosphere and musical stylings of the DS scene as a whole.
How were the artists selected, and by whom?
ER: The community [is] refreshingly welcoming and supportive, and everyone either already has their own DS project or is only one step away from starting one. It’s like everyone is both a friend and a collaborator. And because the idea of [DS] as a live genre is still somewhat nascent, there aren’t any preconceptions or precedents set for what exactly “live DS” is or how it should be played, so we’re getting to see it develop in real time and be interpreted in a lot of different ways. As an artist, it’s extremely fulfilling and exciting to be a part of something unique and be carving out new creative ground. As a fan, it’s awesome to get to watch so many talented friends keep pushing the limits of what we’re doing and, in turn, keep inspiring me to challenge myself and push towards even more immersive, captivating performances.
What is your goal for this fest and the future of DS in Florida?
ER: To inspire the formation of more live FLDS acts and kickstart the booking of more DS artists and shows in Florida. I have roots in Florida, family currently living there, and a lot of love for the state. I’d love to keep coming back to make FDF an annual thing, especially situated at this winter spot in the calendar where these types of events aren’t ideal in most other regions of the country. More importantly, I’d love to see an active live FLDS scene taking shape and growing entirely independent of my organization in the months between Fests.
There you have it, swordsfolk and sorcerers. Now if you are brave of heart, dust off your D&D gear, check your chainmail and turn the page — we have a rare interview with Florida Dungeon Fest headliner and mysterious Virginia-based synth mage Vaelastrasz. music@orlandoweekly.com

Under the veil of Vaelastrasz
From drone metal to Disney World
BY TYLER BARNEY
“Iwouldn’t believe that dungeon synth of all things would lead me to finally visit Florida. It makes for a nice story.”
Hailing from Virginia, Vaelastrasz performs “True Azerothian Dungeon Synth” — a medley of musical stylings initially inspired by World of Warcraft with a stellar catalog already spanning dozens of releases in only a few years. We briefly spoke with the artist behind the chainmail veil about the journey to Florida Dungeon Fest and what led the way here.
What was your entry to dungeon synth?
In the later days of high school, I got heavily into drone metal. Through looking at recommendations on the internet, I found the projects of Dawn Terry, like Bong and Trollmann av Ildtoppberg. The latter, Trollmann, was this amazing combination of bass drones and minimalist keyboard work. I tried listening to dungeon synth before that — Mortiis, Depressive Silence and so on — but the group I attribute to making it click for me will always be Trollmann. From there I knew I wanted to make music like this.
How did the project begin and how has it transformed?
Early on, the music was just minimalist tracks where melody was the main emphasis. People started to appreciate the music more as I put more layers of instrumentation on top of it while keeping the minimalist spirit alive through repetition. By 2018 or 2019, the project went from recording one single keyboard tone to full-blown compositions with a myriad of patches and tones blaring out.
What are your musical inspirations?
I was drawn to outsider music as a teenager, so artists like Daniel Johnston and Wesley Willis were very huge for me. Around that same time, I found a collection of live recordings from the minimalist composer Julius Eastman called Unjust Malaise that really struck me at a pivotal time in my life. Though I’ve already mentioned Trollmann, I should also mention that around that time I was listening to a lot of Les Légions Noires material. Moëvöt, Aäkon Këëtrëh and Mütiilation — those acts really fueled me creatively. I’ll leave it at that for now before I list out 50 more artists.
How do you see Vaelastrasz fitting within the dungeon synth community?
I’ve been a part of the community and scene for several years now. Its growth has been wild to witness, but I’ve still found a way to fit inside of it all by being friends with peers and artists who truly understand what this art is all about. As corny as it is to say “such and such is about the friends we made along the way,” it truly feels that way with the familial community that dungeon synth has brought to me. I’ve never felt more accepted by people here than any other scene that I know of.
What is your take on dungeon synth live performances becoming more common?
It’s a very welcome sight to see, especially as more people are getting into the genre. I feel that it’s still in its adolescence and hopefully there’s no overabundance of live acts. There was a time when we would joke about how all dungeon synth fans would eventually turn into dungeon synth artists, which made it hard to find the “quality” acts. Though I don’t think I’ve seen a terrible live act before for dungeon synth, I hope it doesn’t balloon up to the point where there’s a thousand new live acts with just another guy in a robe playing [to] a backing track.
Did you always intend to perform live?
I didn’t even think I’d continue the project after a couple years, so having been booked for live shows these past few years has always been quite a surprise for me still. A welcoming surprise.
How do you see dungeon synth evolving in the future?
It’s hard to say. Dungeon synth, for all its glory, is a musically conservative genre that has at times rewarded aesthetics over the actual music itself. There’s a lot of potential for the art and music to grow. It’s carved a considerable space in music and its future is pretty wild, unpredictable even. More festivals are popping up, more live shows are popping up, more opportunities. Maybe we’ll see Quest Master headline Coachella at this rate. Maybe we’ll evolve by being the cockroaches of ambient music, always present, always there, no matter the time and place.
How did you become involved with Florida Dungeon Fest?
I feel as if I get asked to be a part of every new
dungeon synth festival or night that pops up in America. I wouldn’t believe that dungeon synth of all things would lead me to finally visit Florida. It makes for a nice story.
Have you visited Florida before? What do you look forward to most … or least?
Hopefully I can deal with the infamous
humidity that Florida has to offer. The consensus from my friends and family about going to Orlando in particular has been them yelling at me to go to Disney World. It’s got a castle, right? That’s dungeon synth enough.
Vaelastrasz plays Florida Dungeon Fest on Friday at Conduit. music@orlandoweekly.com
First and foremost, all love and support to the people of Los Angeles. But even amid natural disaster, the 67th annual Grammy Awards ceremony looks like it’s still going to happen on Sunday as scheduled.
This year, Orlando has special reason to pay attention, and it’s for some hometown contenders. For one, theatrical metal siren and decorated Orlando music ambassador Ms. Meka Nism is nominated in affiliation with rock royalty Alice Cooper. Despite their famously dark music pedigrees, they’re actually up for “Best Children’s Music Album,” a twist that’s definitely more shock than rock. There’s an Alanis Morissette song for just this sort of occasion.
The team behind this work is not only bigger but even more local. Meka and Cooper are members of Rock for Children, the star-studded group behind Grammy-nominated album Solid Rock Revival that also includes Central Florida members Sharon Aguilar Kamide, Dana Kamide and John David Williams. Other home-grown contributors on this Florida-heavy project include musicians Michelle Jones and Cody Henderson, producers Joe Norelli and Rubén Salas, and engineer Jerry Jones.
FIGUREHEAD EXHIBITION CLOSING
In terms of local culture, the Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground exhibition that’s been on display for over two years now at the Orange County Regional History Museum has been one of the best, most relevant showcases the museum has ever put together. The extended run and community buzz around it can attest to the support. But as good things do, it’s finally coming to an end this Sunday.
From 3-5 p.m., there will be an official but informal concluding affair with many of the trailblazing figures, movers and shakers who were instrumental in forging the foundation for Orlando’s indie-rock scene as we know it today. Go rub shoulders with local giants and send this landmark exhibition off with the respect it deserves.
Now, how about an exhibition on Orlando’s dance music history? (3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, Orange County Regional History Center, event included with museum admission)
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Orlando has special reason to pay attention to the Grammy Awards. Our own theatrical metal siren, Ms. Meka Nism, is nominated in affiliation with rock royalty Alice Cooper … for Best Children’s Music Album!?
All of these natives worked alongside seriously legendary headliners like Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels, Slash, Rob Halford and, of course, Alice Cooper himself.
The Orlando-based project was presented by local charity the Norelli Family Foundation, with all proceeds from the album going to benefit Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers. Orlando represent!
Moon Rays, Flora Flora, Jonas Van den Bossche: Usually, the Dining Room offers a limited calendar of shows since it’s a private home space and not a professional venue. But the community-minded art-music haven has been on an impressive tear lately that continues. Their next event is a showcase featuring the latest adventures of some notable local stars. Moon Rays are the new quartet from composer-bassist Thomas Milovac, one of the most enterprising movers in the city’s jazz and avant-garde scenes right now. Flora Flora is an in-demand polymath who’s one of the leading young lights in the new generation of Orlando experimental music. And of course, Jonas Van den Bossche is the in-house anchor with his capricious guitar explorations. As always, the show is free but artist support in the form of donations and merch-buying is encouraged. (6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, The Dining Room, free)
Timothy Eerie live recording: Can you believe that it’s been nearly a decade that Orlando psych-rock flagbearers Timothy Eerie have been around? Now that’s a long, strange trip I can get into. Well, they’re celebrating with free acid! Just kidding, the acid isn’t free. Kidding again, I really have no idea if there’ll be any acid at all. But if I were a betting man … whatever, I digress. What I really meant to say was a free show.
Anyway, the band are having a big performance where they’re inviting everyone to be part of a collaborative recording for a live album. In addition to the band’s own video, they’re encouraging attendees to contribute their own footage of the event to be incorporated into the final official live video.
Opening will be Tiger Beat, Orlando’s own Velvet Underground. But about that acid … (8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, Will’s Pub, free) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Zora! Festival
Maybe because January has felt like 12 months of chaos packed into 31 days, we missed the beginning of this celebration of Eatonville’s own visionary author, Zora Neale Hurston. But the Zora! Festival is ramping up in earnest this week, with five days of literary discussions, music, art exhibitions, a multi-day academic conference starting Wednesday, a STEM conference for middle-schoolers on Friday and live performances aplenty. The capstone Outdoor Festival of the Arts on Saturday and Sunday promises a bounty of vendors, art, food and, of course, music — this time from The Levert Experience, vocal legends the Bar-Kays and tributes to artists from Tina Turner to Frankie Beverly. And whether you’re a classical music fan or not, Opera Orlando performing jazz icon Scott Joplin’s opera, Treemonisha, for free (!) on Thursday sure does seem mandatory to us. This is the only show he will be playing in Orlando, a combo in-store and record signing that’s free to attend. Copies of Yahola will be available for purchase for Hollingsworth to inscribe. Caramelos de Cianuro
Venezuelan rockers Caramelos de Cianuro surfaced with a bang in the early 1990s, creating an urgent sound influenced as much by the alternative rock that was all the rage as punk, the folk styles of their homeland and an enviable knack for pop hooks. The band routinely pumped out hit records and singles while expanding their already eclectic catalog. Case in point: 2015 Latin Grammy-nominated release 8, which saw the band dabbling in sleek new wave and Interpolesque theatrics. The quartet lineup fractured in 2018 and now the band soldier on as a duo of

Faded Kingdom Beer Fest
Cap off Orlando Beer Week the right way by coming to the block party that is Faded Kingdom Beer Fest. Hosted at Tactical Brewing Co., expect over 70 breweries and a lineup of food purveyors from the greater Orlando area and neighboring cities. This is Faded Kingdom’s third year capping off Beer Week, a collaborative “ale-liance” to promote local breweries. The afternoon will include live entertainment from a DJ and … apparently an armored MMA-esque battle. Proceeds from Faded Kingdom benefit the Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge, a wildlife rehab and education center. General admission includes unlimited samples from participating breweries, while VIP entry includes a bottle of barrel-aged beer from Tactical Brewing and early entry. Noon, Tactical Brewing Co., 4882 New Broad St., tacticalbeer. com, $50-$95. — Juno Le

Jerry Seinfeld
Iconic stand-up Jerry Seinfeld heads to Orlando for two performances this weekend. Seinfeld is best known for 1990s sitcom Seinfeld — a show about nothing (yet so much more) — and an even longer comedy career that’s seen him perform on stages around the world. Most recently, Seinfeld helmed the film Unfrosted, a comedy he directed, co-wrote, produced and starred in alongside Amy Schumer and Hugh Grant. Unfrosted sadly garnered the comedian Razzie nominations for Worst Actor and Worst Director, so they can’t

Out of the Darkness Walk
The Out of the Darkness walk returns to Baldwin Park this weekend for an 18th year, to raise awareness around issues of mental health and suicide prevention. Organized by the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this walk is one of hundreds organized across the country. The 2-and-change-mile walk around Lake Baldwin is a fundraiser for AFSP’s efforts to destigmatize mental health struggles and promote suicide prevention. “Suicide prevention and mental health are important to me for several reasons. I never thought I would be talking about suicide or even know anyone who died by suicide until April 28, 2004, when my daddy left a note and left us in shock! … As close as you are to people, you never know and that is why it is important to talk about your feelings,” says one of the event’s local organizers, Vicki Long. “Nowadays, thanks to organizations like American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and all the volunteers and people who advocate for the cause, people now seek health and realize their mental health is just as import as their physical health. People sharing their stories at our walks are very uplifting for each other, whether they struggle or they have lost someone to suicide.” There’s still time to register to participate through the AFSP’s website. There is no registration fee or fundraising minimum to participate; you may participate individually or as part of a team. 1 p.m., Baldwin Park, 2420 Lakemont Ave., supporting.afsp.org, free-$150. — MM

Meet Winnie the Pooch!
Winnie (A562059) was brought in by a resident who believes he was dumped. He told us Winnie ran into his yard and would not leave. He was huddling in a corner, confused and terrified. Winnie hasn’t been with us long, but he spends his days hiding away in his kennel. Too scared to socialize. Too scared to come out to the yard. We estimate his age to be 2 years old. He’s healthy, small and gentle, and we are working with him, but Winnie needs a home to heal. He needs a family to make him whole. Here at the shelter he’s been avoidant and fearful, though he’s good with other dogs. Winnie just needs a home to help break him out of his shell.
