Walgreens will close an Orlando distribution center, Winter Park may no longer be Flavortown, Rep. Maxwell Frost votes no on TikTok ban and other news you may have missed.

» Walgreens to close Orlando distribution center, lay off hundreds Walgreens, the second-largest pharmacy chain in the United States, plans to close one of its distribution centers in Orlando and lay off the facility’s 324 employees, according to a notice the company filed with the state last week. As explanation for the closure, the company’s senior counsel cited a need to “help build business momentum” and “improve the efficiency of our operations.” The company “anticipated” providing all affected Orlando employees with a 60-day notice of their layoff on March 14, the same day the company notified the state. Layoffs at the Orlando distribution center, located at 2455 Premier Row, will begin on or about May 17, 2024, the notice reads. It adds that employees will receive their full compensation and benefits until they’re laid off, or until they resign (whichever comes first). Walgreens has also announced layoffs elsewhere over the last year, including layoffs involving hundreds of corporate employees and workers at other distribution centers outside of Florida. According to Forbes, the chain has faced financial strains, reporting more than $3 billion dollars in losses in fiscal year 2023, with losses in part attributed to litigation involving the company’s role in the opioid epidemic. Walgreens also faced an abrupt departure of its CEO last year, who’d been on the job less than three years by the time she left. In October, Reuters reported the company planned to cut $1 billion in costs in 2024.

» Trouble in FlavorTown? Guy Fieri’s chicken restaurant in Winter Park faces eviction over unpaid rent

Celebrity chef and Food Network icon Guy Fieri’s restaurant Chicken Guy! is facing eviction over unpaid rent at its Winter Park location, according to court records. Court records state the restaurant is accused of breaching its contract and owing its landlord $38,507.72 in overdue rent, interest and late fees. A three-day notice was issued Feb. 15 ordering Chicken Guy! to pay rent or give up possession of the premises. The landlord issued the same notice again March 4, before filing an eviction notice in Orange County court. Chicken Guy! opened in Winter Park at 818 S. Orlando Ave. in 2021, joining the only other Central Florida location in Disney Springs. The two other Florida locations are in Miami and Wesley Chapel.

» Orlando’s Maxwell Frost among Florida congressmen to vote ‘no’ on TikTok ban

A bipartisan group of Florida U.S. House lawmakers voted last week to force the Chinese owner of social app TikTok to either sell the company, or effectively be banned in the United States. The Florida House congressional delegation’s vote was 24-3, with Orlando Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, the Gen-Z congressman, and two Republicans — Matt Gaetz and Sarasota’s Greg Steube — as the only Florida lawmakers to oppose the proposal. South Florida Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel was listed as “not voting” on the roll call in the U.S. House. Overall the U.S. House of Representatives passed the measure, 352-65, with 1 “present” and 14 “not voting.”“Let’s be clear that I am deeply concerned about our foreign adversaries accessing our private data online, but this bill is not the comprehensive reform we need to rein in Big Tech and protect Americans from harm and manipulation,” Frost said in a statement. “I refuse to spring a TikTok ban on my constituents who, under the neo-fascist control of Governor DeSantis, rely on social media for income, information and community.” The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate. Both of Florida’s Republican U.S. Senators — Marco Rubio and Rick Scott — have indicated they support banning the app in the past.

» Settlement in Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ lawsuit allows mentions of gender identity, sexual orientation in schools

The state and attorneys for students, parents and teachers have settled a battle about a 2022 Florida law that restricts instruction about gender identity and sexual orientation in schools. The settlement, which comes after months of discussion, seeks to draw a distinction between preventing “classroom instruction” about gender identity and sexual orientation and other school contexts in which the subjects might come up. It would end a fight over a law that has drawn national attention, with supporters calling the measure the “Parental Rights in Education” law — and opponents deriding it as the “Don’t Say Gay” law. Quoting from documents filed earlier in the case, the settlement includes a series of legal recitals, such as that the “statute restricts only ‘instruction’ that occurs in a ‘classroom’ setting” and that the “statute restricts only classroom instruction on

particular subjects — ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity.’” The plaintiffs agreed to drop their lawsuit contingent on the state Department of Education providing copies of the settlement and the recitals to each school board in the state, according to the settlement document.

» DeSantis signs bill targeting ‘community’ IDs for migrants in Florida

After speaking behind a placard labeled “stop illegal immigration,” Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed three bills targeting undocumented immigrants. The measures, approved during the 2024 legislative session, seek to crack down on the use of what are known as “community” identification cards, strengthen criminal penalties for people who previously have been deported, and stiffen punishments for repeatedly driving without licenses. The most high-profile bill, HB 1451, will prevent counties and municipalities from accepting community IDs if the cards were issued by groups that have provided such ID to people who are in the country illegally. The cards are typically issued by nonprofit organizations or other non-governmental groups. They cannot be used for purposes such as driving or voting, but are intended to serve as an alternative form of ID to apply for jobs, housing or other purposes. During legislative debate last week, Democrats defended the use of these cards. Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, said law-enforcement officials have backed the use of community IDs. Eskamani stated the cards “can help residents who are experiencing homelessness” and “can help link some of our most vulnerable residents to resources.” Rep. Johanna Lopez, D-Orlando, said “restricting access to valid identification jeopardizes public safety.” The bill builds on a measure approved last year that prohibited local governments from providing money for issuing community IDs.

UCF students advocate for free emergency contraception on campus

After meeting with organizers twice, the administration lowered the cost of generic Plan B to $6

Access to abortion care in Florida and across the country remains precarious, and in some states is no longer accessible at all. Students at the University of Central Florida, eyeing this issue with concern, are advocating for ways to help young people prevent unwanted pregnancy — and no, it’s not through the failed strategy of promoting abstinence only.

Student organizers at UCF, the state’s largest university by enrollment based in Orlando, have joined young adults on other college campuses in advocating for expanded access to emergency contraception — specifically, what’s known as the “morning after” pill. This can be taken up to five days after having unprotected sex to help prevent pregnancy.

The effort to expand access to emergency contraception is being spearheaded by student members of the Young Democratic Socialists of

America, the student arm of a national political organization that advocates for social and economic justice.

Reana Sinani, a recent graduate of UCF and co-chair of UCF’s YDSA chapter, told Orlando Weekly that the group began gathering digital petitions on campus earlier this semester, with the ultimate goal of making Plan B free and accessible for all students.

“We got like, I want to say 600 signatures or something in three days, which was really, really cool,” said Sinani, 22, a psychology major.

The group organized tabling events, where they shared information about emergency contraception and offered free Plan B supplied by groups like Orlando’s Stand With Abortion Now and Emergency Contraception 4 Every Campus, a national project of the American Society for Emergency Contraception.

emergency contraception, now priced lower due to a new vendor’s reduced purchase cost.”

A spokesperson for the pharmacy emphasized that brand-name Plan B, the functional equivalent of the generic version, will remain priced at $40 through UCF’s pharmacy.

It’s only the generic version — available over the counter at the student pharmacy — that is now priced at $5.98.

Student organizers nonetheless celebrated the decision on social media.

“This is only the start of our campaign as we will continue to look for venues to make Plan B FREE and ACCESSIBLE for all UCF students!” the group wrote in an Instagram post. (They confirmed to Orlando Weekly they were aware it was the generic, not brand-name Plan B, that was now priced at a lower cost.)

According to Sinani, the group had collected roughly 1,600 petitions in support of the initiative as of March. Most came from students, in addition to some staff and faculty.

The goal of their campaign, she added, isn’t just to reduce the cost of emergency contraception, but also to make it more accessible through additional pickup locations across campus.

Currently, emergency contraceptives are only available at the university’s pharmacy through Student Health Services. Not everyone knows where that is, said Sinani, unless they have picked up other prescriptions.

But they’re considering ways to make it easier for people to access. One idea that’s picked up steam across the country is the installation of vending machines on college campuses that distribute emergency contraceptives and other personal or sexual health products.

According to Emergency Contraception 4 Every Campus, student activists have successfully advocated for the placement of these vending machines on roughly 60 campuses nationwide, including three in Florida.

The University of Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of South Florida all have vending machines that distribute contraceptives and other personal healthcare products on-campus, according to EC4EC.

Then, in February, students reached a milestone.

After meeting with the university’s chief public health officer on two separate occasions to discuss the issue, UCF’s Student Health Services switched to a lower-cost supplier of levonorgestrel, the generic version of Plan B, moving the price from $20 down to $6 on the university’s main campus in late February.

Chief public health officer Dr. Michael Deichen, who also serves as associate vice president of UCF’s Student Health Services, declined an interview with Orlando Weekly, but confirmed the price drop in an emailed statement.

“Medications are sold at a reduced markup in keeping with ongoing efforts to provide affordable and quality care to students,” Deichen said, somewhat downplaying the students’ involvement in the decision.“Among the items available is generic

So do universities in other states coast to coast, from New York to North Carolina, Ohio, Washington and California.

Kelly Cleland, executive director of the American Society for Emergency Contraception, told Orlando Weekly there’s no law that currently prohibits the sale of EC in vending machines in any state. “So that puts student leaders in a great position,” Cleland said.

Some of the benefits of these vending machines, she said, include product affordability, timely access and privacy — with no questions asked at the pharmacy counter, and the ability for a student to pick up the item when they need it, on their own terms.

The ideal placement for these machines, advocates say, is in centrally located buildings that are open for extended hours or, better, 24/7. They could also be placed in gender-neutral bathrooms, libraries (like at the University of

South Florida in Tampa) or other easily accessible spaces.

“Unprotected sex doesn’t only happen during business hours!” Cleland pointed out.“And many students experience stigma or embarrassment about needing EC and may not want to have to answer questions about their purchase, so vending machines can provide that anonymity and privacy.”

At the University of Central Florida, Sinani said most people they’ve talked to on the ground about making EC more accessible have been receptive to the idea — even students who self-identified as conservative or anti-abortion.

“I’ve gotten comments like, ‘Oh, this would decrease abortions, so I will sign it,’” said Sinani, who herself supports abortion access.

Organizing around abortion access was actually a launching pad for the EC initiative. Before kicking off their Plan B campaign, students with YDSA first began gathering petitions last year for a proposed abortion-rights ballot initiative, spearheaded by the political committee Floridians Protecting Freedom.

The proposed constitutional amendment, if approved by Florida voters, would guarantee a right to abortion up to roughly 24 weeks of pregnancy.

After gathering the necessary number of signatures, advocates are now waiting to see whether the initiative will get final Supreme Court approval for placement on the November ballot. Florida’s self-described “pro-choice” State Attorney General Ashley Moody has argued

the language of their proposal is too vague and would “hoodwink” voters.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court effectively overturned the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, a number of states have become statewide abortion deserts, where abortion care is banned and completely inaccessible.

This is not true for Florida, which is — for now — the most accessible state for abortion care in the U.S. South, despite a 15-week limit on abortion that opponents have challenged in the courts. A six-week ban, approved by the state Legislature’s Republican majority in 2023, is currently on hold pending a state Supreme Court decision.

As Vox has reported, curtailing access to emergency contraception is still considered a “fringe” view, even among those opposed to abortion — although some anti-abortion activists have reportedly been laying the groundwork for such an initiative for decades.

One of the most memorable moments Orlando Weekly had in 2021 at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), held in Orlando that year, was a conversation about abortion with a young woman holding a sizable “Babies Lives Matter” flag. The young woman, originally from Venezuela, and her boyfriend said they were anti-abortion, but agreed that access to birth control was important. (They were less decisive on whether birth control should be cost-free — because, yes, we did ask.)

One advantage the “fringe” anti-abortion activists have is that many Americans don’t

Session post-game begins

The Legislature approved 313 bills this year, but not all will be signed by DeSantis into law, and last-ditch attempts to kill some are underway now

With the 2024 legislative session over, it’s now time for veto requests.

Among the veto pleas already made to Gov. Ron DeSantis: Don’t sign a bill (HB 49) that would loosen decades-old work restrictions for 16- and 17-year-old youths; protect businesses and farmers by vetoing a bill (SB 1698) that would outlaw euphoria-inducing hemp products; nix a bill (HB 931) that would allow volunteer chaplains at public schools; and short-circuit an energy bill (HB 1645) that includes banning offshore wind turbines.

Of the 313 bills approved by the Legislature, 295 had not been formally sent to the governor’s office as of last Wednesday. The process usually is spread out over several weeks.

Senate spokeswoman Katie Betta said Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, “has

understand what EC is, and how it differs from procedures to terminate a pregnancy.

A 2023 poll by KFF found 93% of U.S. adults were aware of Plan B or “morning-after” pills, but only 62% were aware it was not the same as the abortion pill. Nearly three-quarters (73%) incorrectly believed that emergency contraception is capable of ending a pregnancy in its early stages.

Students at UCF, organizing around emergency contraception access, also encountered this misinformation or other misunderstandings about how EC works.

Sinani said their campaign has been an “informative” experience, and it’s been fulfilling to be able to offer informational resources to other young people. To her, accessibility is what’s most important.

College students aren’t the most financially stable, she said. They may be between jobs. Not everyone can afford to drop $40 on Plan B if they have unprotected sex or are assaulted.“Our campaign slogan is ‘free and accessible Plan B for all students,’ and that’s truly what we’re pushing for.”

Cleland, with the American Society for Emergency Contraception, stressed that EC isn’t just for people who are sexually active. There are a number of reasons that a person might seek it out, including cases of sexual assault and a lack of access to non-emergency contraception.

“Making EC accessible and affordable helps keep students achieve their goals and have autonomy over their bodies and futures,” she said. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

10 dead issues from 2024 session

When Florida lawmakers went home after ending the 2024 legislative session, they left behind hundreds of bills that did not pass. Here are snapshots of 10 issues that died during the session:

DEFAMATION: Proposals to revamp defamation laws could have exposed media organizations to increased liability. That could have included making it easier for public figures to sue journalists who rely on anonymous sources for information that turns out to be false.

FLAG RESTRICTIONS: Bills that would have restricted the types of flags flown at schools and other public buildings drew controversy because opponents said the proposals, at least in part, were designed to prevent display of LGBTQ pride flags.

GUN AGE: The House passed a bill that would have lowered the minimum age from 21 to 18 to buy rifles and shotguns in Florida. But the Senate did not consider the proposal, which would have reversed an age change made after the 2018 Parkland school shooting.

ID CARDS, INSURANCE: LGBTQ-advocacy groups fought a House proposal that would have required state-issued identification cards to reflect a person’s sex assigned at birth and placed requirements on health insurers that cover treatments for gender dysphoria.

LAWSUIT LIMITS: House and Senate proposals could have increased limits on the amounts of money that government agencies can be required to pay in lawsuits. The proposals would have revamped sovereign-immunity laws, which limit liability of government agencies.

signed all of the bills and directed the secretary to transmit them at the request of the governor.”

Most bills will be signed without causing a stir. But a handful are more controversial after getting approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature. For example:

· The Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity and the South Florida Wildlands Association are among groups seeking a veto of a bill (HB 87) that would allow people to kill bears when they reasonably believe it is necessary to avoid a threat of death or serious injury. The bill stems from complaints about bears posing a threat to residents in rural areas of Northwest Florida.

“To begin with, this legislation is completely unnecessary,” the South Florida Wildlands Association said in urging members to ask

DeSantis for a veto.“In Florida or any other state, killing any animal in a legitimate act of self-defense is already permissible under common law.”

· Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the Sierra Club, the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health and the Farmworker Association of Florida are among critics seeking a veto of a bill (HB 433) that would prevent local governments from putting requirements on contractors about wages and heat-exposure protections for workers.

“A report from 2018 found that outdoor workers between the months of May and September in every Florida county were exposed to heat levels above the recommended threshold identified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety,” the farmworker association said.

· Groups such as NetChoice want DeSantis to veto a bill (HB 3) that seeks to prevent children under age 16 from opening social-media accounts — though it would allow parents to give consent for 14- and 15-year-olds to have accounts. NetChoice, a tech-industry group, and other opponents have argued the bill would violate First Amendment rights.

“HB 3 in effect will impose an ‘I.D. for the Internet’ on any Floridian who wants to use an online service — no matter their age,” NetChoice said.

news@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL TAXES: The House passed a proposal that could have made it harder for cities and counties to raise property taxes, but the issue died in the Senate. The proposal would have required two-thirds votes by local governing boards to raise tax-millage rates.

MARIJUANA POTENCY: Lawmakers considered imposing limits on the amounts of euphoria-inducing THC in marijuana products. The limits would have taken effect if voters in November pass a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow recreational marijuana.

MONUMENTS: Amid debates in places such as Jacksonville about removing monuments erected to honor the Confederacy, lawmakers considered proposals to prevent local governments from removing or destroying historic monuments from public property.

TERM LIMITS: While some counties already have term limits, House and Senate proposals sought to impose eight- or 12-year term limits on county commissioners throughout the state. The idea drew opposition, in part, from rural counties, and the proposals stalled.

‘UNBORN CHILD’ BILL: Proposals would have allowed parents to file civil lawsuits seeking damages for the wrongful death of an “unborn child.” Abortion-rights advocates fought the proposals, though bill sponsors said the issue was not abortion-related.

BACKPACKERS

Photographers Brian Cross and Eric Coleman, collectively known as Mochilla, travel light but prepared

For spring break, Snap! Orlando is popping with parties. Three new shows open on Friday, March 22: Life-As-Is features the work of Lauren Whitlow, an up-and-coming queer photographer from Los Angeles; in the next gallery, Gotta Go, Gotta Flow shares Michael Abramson’s legendary scenes of South Side Chicago’s nightlife in the 1970s; and then the beat takes a turn for the intense with Timeless, work by Brian Cross and Eric Coleman that samples the rich imagery of the West Coast hip-hop scene.

“We are thrilled to present these combined exhibits, which feature the exceptional works of four very talented artists,” says Snap! founder Patrick Kahn. “In particular, we’ve been trying to get Brian

Cross and Eric Coleman here for a long, long time, and it’s exciting to finally have them in Orlando.” Their work in the show documents iconic groups like the Roots, the Fugees, Jurassic 5, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def and many more.

Eric Coleman started taking pictures at the age of 12, and by the time he graduated from London’s Royal College of Art he had created a distinctive style. He’s responsible for timeless portraits of artists such as Eminem, MF Doom, DJ Shadow and Mary J. Blige, in images referencing fashion, advertising and film with a moody and atmospheric surreality. Coleman first met Brian Cross when the two worked together on a video for DJ Shadow at the pyramids of

Teotihuacan. Both Coleman and Cross approached the video shoot with only backpacks. Asked where all of the trucks, dollies and other contraptions were, Cross and Coleman shrugged and showed the DJ their backpacks. Ever since, the two have committed to the ethic of the mochila (Spanish for backpack), borrowed from graffiti artists who carried a backpack full of spray cans at the ready.

As the collective dubbed Mochilla, they’ve created album covers, music documentaries, books, videos and stills. They joined a camera crew to produce the Oscar-nominated Banksy film Exit Through the Gift Shop, which was released in 2010. Today they work on their own projects and keep Mochilla together as a production company. Coleman juxtaposes photographs that create an inner dialogue with each other. In “Brazil,” one looks down at the hard, crystalline nighttime city from above, flooded with a mysterious glowing light. This image is paired with another photograph of graffiti on a grubby stone wall, the boldest tag rattling the viewer with the dark curse of the street.

Perhaps Coleman’s most iconic image is a black-and-white portrait of Daniel Dumile, aka MF Doom, in his trademark face-hiding metal helmet. (The cover of 2004’s Madvillainy sparked a whole industry of metal helmetology that is still going strong.) Not only will this image be in the show, but also a rather hilarious contact sheet of 16 images showing Dumile, in his helmet and holding a multi-track recorder, trying out various poses for the camera. Viewers may recognize one or two images that made it out of the studio.

Cross, who goes by B+, has contributed to films and videos throughout his career. Hailing from Limerick, Ireland, Cross’ early

career included photographing DJ Magic Mike in Orlando, before he went on to become a Miami Bass star. Cross studied at California Institute of the Arts, enmeshed himself in the local hip-hop scene, and in the early 1990s published It’s Not About a Salary: Rap, Race and Resistance in Los Angeles. One of the earliest photographic documents with interviews of rap and hip-hop artists, his book provided a voice to a movement that’s grown ever since.

We caught a few minutes with Cross while he was on University of California San Diego’s campus, where he is a professor. “Jazzed to be coming back to Orlando,” he says.

When talking about his photography, Cross gets excited. “I’m an Irish rapper and photographer, sure, I know that’s a bit of an oxymoron … but I suppose there’s always been a little solidarity between Irishmen and African Americans, going back to Frederick Douglass’ visit during the famine.”

B+ pauses to take a breath or grade a paper or something, then continues rapid-fire: “You know, it’s a huge honor to be in the same

gallery as Michael Abramson. That chap was the king of Chicago’s South Side, you know? He was enormously influential not only on me, but on many of the photographers and artists who made their way into hip-hop and rap. We followed him before he got discovered.”

Cross’ passion for the LA music scene leads him everywhere. One image in a Los Angeles record store is particularly captivating. Record stores are, of course, hallowed ground to anyone with a passion for music, and in this image the lighting washes over rows and rows of LPs as patrons reverently flip albums, one central figure carrying at least an inch of newly discovered vinyl under his left arm.

“Eric and I are bringing a few record collections and look forward to guest-DJing on opening night,” B+ says, and advises us, “Do not miss Kaitlyn Sardin.” As if we would! Sardin (known on social media as @kaitrock), a local dancer who combines traditional Irish dance

When a performer is capable of singing, dancing and acting, they are commonly referred to as a “triple threat.” But what do you call a painting poet who can tickle your funny bone while pricking you with needles? If the person in question is Orlando’s multidisciplinary artist Chris Trovador, you can call him Ink Addicted, which is the name of the solo show he’s premiering March 22 and 23 at the Oviedo Mall’s Imagine Performing Arts Center (imagineperformingartscenter.org). I recently chatted with Trovador ahead of opening night to learn about his journey from the west side of Orlando to the Canadian Fringe circuit, where he’ll be touring his new show this coming summer.

Born in 1990 and raised in Pine Hills and Forest City, Trovador recalls that “the first moment I could lift up a pencil I was drawing. I am an only child, so that was my form of entertainment,”

he says, adding that his “first love other than art and drawing was music,” especially freestyle rap, which led him to study audio engineering at Maitland’s FIRST Institute digital media school.

Making music wasn’t paying the bills, but fortunately he found an apprenticeship via Craigslist in another lifelong interest: tattooing.

“I would always draw on myself, do fake tattoos,” Trovador remembers. His mother, who had been an artist and clown in Puerto Rico, encouraged his art and music, but was less enthusiastic about the ink: “Growing up, she definitely did not like that. She was very religious [and] conservative.”

Despite that, he went to work for Danny Wells at Stigma Tattoo Bar, which was located on downtown Orlando’s Orange Avenue directly below SAK Comedy Lab, where he discovered the world of improvisational comedy during what he calls a dark time when he experienced “a lot of partying, a lot of emptiness.”

At SAK, Trovador discovered an outlet for his innate inner “class clown,” a tendency which hadn’t been nurtured by the drama teacher who failed him in class.

“I already had this inclination of improvisation, I just didn’t have a name for it. … While I’m doing tattoos, I’m entertaining my clients. A lot of times they’re nervous, they’re scared, so then you go ‘OK, how do I make them feel

comfortable? How do I make them not freak out?’ … I entertain them. I make them laugh.” Improv also had an edge over rapping that hit closer to home: “I can’t bring my grandparents to my hip-hop show, [but] I can bring them to this comedy show.”

After graduating from SAK’s training program, Trovador says he started realizing there were “no opportunities for someone who looks like me” in the area. He moved to Los Angeles on the advice of a cinematographer friend. He spent eight years performing regularly in California until COVID put his life on pause. Unable to perform in person or tattoo, Trovador used Zoom to teach sketch writing and improv classes for Second City and other theaters, as well as perform his own first online solo show through the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, before returning home to Orlando.

Now, Trovador is synthesizing all of those varied life experiences and “packaging it with a nice little bow” that conveys his journey through clowning, live painting, improv comedy and spoken word. This production is made possible in part by an individual artist grant awarded by United Arts of Central Florida, and by producer Clark Levi of Lightup Shoebox.

“I immediately recognized his talent and his personality and everything that he could bring,”

Levi says of Trovador, who emceed his recent experimental collaboration The Audience Will Choose the Title of This Show at Timucua Arts Foundation. “I just felt like it was a fate moment that brought us together, and I had to take advantage of that to help him, because I really do believe in Chris’s talent.”

Because he was selected in the CAFF Canadian Fringe Festival lottery, Trovador will get to take Ink Addicted to both Prince Edward Island and Edmonton later this year. “Canada is somewhat intimidating, because I’m hoping that they’re gonna get my jokes,” he says. “Fingers crossed that they’ll understand my culture.” But he says he’s more relaxed about his first-ever international tour than he is about his imminent hometown appearance. “I have been gone for so long, and friends and family and people from high school haven’t seen me. So to put my name out there, that’s a little bit nerve-wracking.”

Whether you’re elaborately inked or entirely tattoo-free, Trovador insists that his show is not to alienate anyone or boast about the breadth of his talents, but simply to channel his irrepressible artistic impulse.“If I don’t perform, I get irritable, I get in my feelings,” he says. “I’m just expressing myself, and I’m here to share it with everyone who’s willing to listen.”

A MANSION FOR ALL SEASONS

New Disney Springs joint Summer House on the Lake impresses with a breezy vibe and Cali comfort

I’ve already spent a lot more time at Disney Springs than I’ve cared to this year, but if I find myself back at the sprawling complex dodging white-socked wankers and pixie-dusted pillocks again, it’ll be so as to spend more time at Summer House on the Lake. To dine inside this airy waterside hacienda is to dine inside the pages of Architectural Digest

“It’s got a Hamptons feel,” said one of my pals. “More like Miami with all these tropical plants and palm trees,” said another. “Ahh, yes. Or maybe Newport Beach?”

Whatever affluent coastal community Summer House on the Lake most resembles, the place does its part to remove patrons from the Disney Springs bangarang and, for that, our collective cognitive states were thankful. Even the glare of a sign that simply read “YES” above our booth couldn’t harsh our mellow. But, strangely enough, we found we couldn’t say no to anything our server recommended.“You need to try the cheesy dream puffs,” she said. YES.

“And oh my God, the grilled avocado and hamachi sashimi are my faves!” YES. YES.

SUMMER HOUSE ON THE LAKE

1498 E. Buena Vista Drive, Lake Buena Vista 407-598-8645

summerhouserestaurants.com

We were awaiting our drink order and had yet to be seated under the aforementioned “YES” sign, yet I shamelessly said yes and partook of their appetizer. I sensed that all this Cali-inspired fare seemed to put folks in a relaxed state of mind. Us included. We took our drinks and enjoyed them in the front patio under the breeze of ceiling fans while watching a line form inside the cookie bar. Yes (YES!), the restaurant houses a cookie bar off to the side for walk-ups, but those same cookies can be ordered off the restaurant’s dessert menu. Which we did, under the glare of the “YES” sign, but not before shredding into more savories we said YES to, like wood-grilled artichokes ($16.95).

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

YES, the puffs ($10.95) were soft, airy and cheesy and reminded us somewhat of the gruyere biscuits served at the Ravenous Pig. Honey butter made them all the better. The trio of grilled avocado halves ($13.95) slicked in salsa matcha were so smoky good, we had to order another helping. And that hamachi sashimi ($18.95), set in a pool of citrusy whitesoy ponzu, inflamed palates with its demon cuts of jalapeño. “Wow, that is shockingly spicy,” I said as I polished off the sashimi and finger-licked the plate clean.

Admittedly, this was not the start we were expecting, not from a brand operated by a Chicago-based conglomerate with the hokey name of “Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises” stuffed with more than 120 restaurants under its bulging belt. But they appear to be doing something right — hell, a lot right in the case of Summer House on the Lake.

We spoke to a couple from Celebration who endure the crowds on a regular basis just to sit at the restaurant’s back bar, stare out onto the lake, sip rosé and eat. “We’ve been here 10 times,” said the husband. “Here, try these salmon poke nachos,” said the wife.

“Better than Hillstone,” said one pal after sucking an aioli-dipped petal. The char on this heirloom globe from Castroville, California — marinated in olive oil, garlic, lemon and oregano — was impeccable, and about $3 cheaper than at that Winter Park restaurant so many love to hate. The trio of prime beef meatballs ($17.95) also drew universal praise for their not overly dense texture, while leftover cheesy dream puffs were employed to sop up the marinara. Nothing here looked more Cali than the butterflied chicken breast paillard ($22.95). pounded thin, marinated with herbs and lemon, and wood-grilled. Arugula and droplets of Calabrian chili vinaigrette on this crispy-edged retro piece of meat got me thinking of Jeremiah Tower, and his version of chicken paillard with ancho chile butter. But just as thin was the crust on the margherita pizza ($19.95), though it drew nothing more than a satisfactory grunt from this table of pizza snobs. Same with the grouper fish and chips ($35.95), a pricey cut that was nearly upstaged by underlying fries dusted in malt salt — a powder lending all the puckery flavor to fries without the soggy effects.

Now on to those cookies. Personally, I thought the chocolate chip walnut ($5.45) and the oatmeal scotchie ($4.95) to be too sweet. I much preferred the enormous and utterly sexy slab of chocolate fudge layer cake ($18.95) served with vanilla Chantilly cream. It’s an absolute showstopper, much like the one made famous in The Bear. In fact, the last restaurant opening that impressed me this much at Disney Springs was Jaleo by José Andrés, and that was five years ago. Summer House on the Lake has been open for just a little more than three months but, judging from our experience, it’s already in mid-season form.

COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

Homicide: New York — Law & Order creator Dick Wolf turns documentarian (sorta) with a five-episode series that has New York City cops reliving some of the most gruesome crimes they’ve ever had to come to terms with. And in one or two cases, they weren’t even the perpetrators! (Netflix)

Palm Royale — In 1969, while NASA was sending men to the moon, a woman named Maxine Simmons was trying to infiltrate the Palm Beach upper crust. That’s the true-life premise of this 10-episode comedy that stars Kristen Wiig as the upwardly mobile Maxine. “OK, I thought I had a good handle on that year,” says Tom Hanks. “But I guess I was just easily impressed.” (Apple TV+)

X-Men ’97 — Much of the original voice cast is back as Disney picks up where Fox Kids’ Saturday morning staple X-Men: The Animated Series left o 32 years ago. In one of the biggest changes, Magneto is now the leader of the group instead of Professor X. And on a lesser front, Gambit has moved over from keyboards to djembe. (Disney+)

Fingers crossed it’s because she’s gone poly with the Property Brothers. (Netflix)

The Casagrandes Movie — Even though the Nickelodeon series The Casagrandes ended in 2022, 11-year-old Ronnie Anne Santiago and her family are getting a full-length animated feature in which to explore the MexicanAmerican experience. Two words I’m hoping we don’t hear: “razor wire.” (Netflix)

Davey & Jonesie’s Locker — A couple of highschool friends have to contend with bizarre alternate versions of the student body when they discover their locker is a portal into the multiverse. Working title: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Especially Acne. (Hulu)

My Undead Yokai Girlfriend — A Japanese guy enters into a relationship with a new flame, unaware that she’s a supernatural entity who’s been seeking revenge on the living for hundreds of years. Boy, and you thought your ex had baggage. (Prime Video)

Shirley — Regina King plays the legendary Shirley Chisholm, who made history in 1972 by becoming the first Black woman to run for president. What a relief we didn’t nominate her, because only a white man like McGovern could have locked up those 17 electoral votes. (Netflix)

You’ll Never Find Me — Fear comes from unexpected places when an Australian man opens his caravan home to a woman who’s looking for protection from a nasty storm. Reminds me of that time the Trailer Park Boys tried to sell weed to one of their neighbors, only to find out he was a dybbuk. (Shudder)

Premieres Thursday:

3 Body Problem — The book trilogy by Cixin Liu becomes a limited series about a scientific breakthrough that begins in 1960s China and ends up rending the fabric of reality itself. Gosh, life was so much easier when they were just giving us gunpowder. (Netflix)

Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told — Travel back in time to the late 20th century to revisit the legendary Spring Break festival that turned the streets of Atlanta into a free-forall of loud rap, lewd behavior and violent assaults. But it had its bad side too. (Hulu)

Road House — Jake Gyllenhaal takes over for the late Patrick Swayze in a remake of the 1989 cult classic. Now go ahead and remind me why 30 seconds of a CGI Christopher Reeve is an a ront to sanctity. (Prime Video)

Premieres Friday:

Buying Beverly Hills — Season 2 takes place against the backdrop of real-estate tycoon Mauricio Umansky’s separation from wife Kyle Richards, but the streamer promises she’ll be even more prominent in the 10 new episodes.

Premieres Monday:

Gabby’s Dollhouse — The six episodes of Season 9 have valuable life lessons for your preschooler, including the proper way to celebrate a birthday and how to cheer up a friend who’s going through a rough time. Right, so that’s two votes for Percocet; what are the other four episodes about? (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Dave Attell: Hot Cross Buns — The hard-working comic brings us up to speed on his experiences at strip clubs and petting zoos. Listen, I could make a joke here, but we all know what it would be, and I wouldn’t get credit for a single streaming view. (No matter what Zack Snyder thinks.) (Netflix)

Good One: A Show About Jokes — Explore the creative process of celebrated Broadway comedian Mike Birbiglia in a documentary special that also includes appearances by Seth Meyers, Hasan Minhaj and Atsuko Okatsuka. Gosh, how much can you really get out of watching a guy scroll through Matt Rife videos on TikTok and scribble down everything he can? (Peacock)

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HER FRIENDS

Aoife O’Donovan gives out flowers and collects some of her own with new album All My Friends

March is one of the busiest and most important months of Aoife O’Donovan’s career, and her recent chat with Orlando Weekly came during a rare, brief pause in her hectic schedule. On deck is a new album and a national tour, as well as family life and the ceaseless pressure of being an engaged citizen in these times of tumult and truculence.

Our interview started at noon, but she’d already been going for hours. “I was just doing other interviews, I went for a run, was at Eola General for a friend’s birthday, just making the rounds,” she says with a smirk. “About to go get my car washed at Octopus!”

as well as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Norfolk.

“There’s something about the vibe here in Orlando, and Central Florida in general, that I found when we moved here full-time, even though we’d been coming here part-time for many years before, that I find very conducive to a creative lifestyle,” she says.“Even though I live in downtown Orlando, Lake Eola Heights, this area gives me a lot of creative energy.”

Born in Boston in November 1982, O’Donovan matriculated through a Massachusetts scene that boasts some of the most prestigious music education programs in the country. She graduated from the Massachusetts Conservatory of Music in 2003, by which point she’d already founded the band Crooked Still with fellow alum Corey DiMario on bass, MIT’s Greg Liszt on banjo and Rushad Eggleston (aka Cello Goblin), then a student at Berklee. Seven albums and 23 years later, that group persists, but the members have all gone on to pursue solo careers.

O’Donovan’s first solo album, Blue Light, was released by Media Blitz Record Co. in 2010. By that point, she’d already made five albums with Crooked Still, and three more with Sometimes Why, a group she founded in 2005 with Kristin Andreassen and Ruth Ungar Merenda, plus another two with I’m With Her, the group she formed with Sarah Jarosz and Sara Watkins in 2014. (Their single “Call My Name” earned O’Donovan a Grammy in 2019.)

She’s also made dozens of guest appearances on recordings by artists as varied as the Wayfaring Strangers, Caitlin Canty, Kronos Quartet, Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan, Chris Thile and Yo-Yo Ma. With the latter four, O’Donovan features as vocalist in their Goat Rodeo Sessions project. O’Donovan has performed with symphony orchestras in Boston, Louisville, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C.

album, probably 40,” O’Donovan says.“Maybe 50 or 60. There’s the children’s chorus, the rhythm section, guest instrumentalists, guest vocalists. And then there’s all the people working behind the scenes to get the music out to people.” All My Friends also features the Knights, the Westerlies and the San Francisco Girls Chorus, who appear on the title track.

All My Friends arrives just as this year’s election cycle is picking up steam — a terrifying thought to many Floridians, but not so much to O’Donovan. “Where I am, there’s a lot of movement here,” she says. “I’m excited to be here, I’m excited to be a Florida voter. Coming from the Northeast, I definitely grew up in more of a liberal bubble, but I think there’s a lot to be gained from living in a purple state where your neighbors might have totally different views than you. I’ve found that there’s a very warm atmosphere, and people are willing to have the uncomfortable conversations.”

Much of the animating spirit of the album emanates from the ghost of Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947), from whose writings and speeches O’Donovan drew for some of the lyrics. In 1920, Catt founded the League of Women Voters, today maybe best known for its role in running the U.S. presidential debates in 1976, 1980 and 1984, which fans of the genre consider some of the best years for that stuff.

The organization’s influence actually goes much deeper, of course, and that is another subject worth pondering as one listens to the music. The League of Women Voters has been active on national and international levels, particularly in the immediate postwar era, and its roster over the years has included many iconic American feminists, starting with Catt herself.

This new album, All My Friends, is a meditation on women’s rights and the fluid nature of female empowerment, at a time when those rights are under siege across much of the country — very definitely including Florida, where O’Donovan lives not far from Lake Eola with her husband, cellist/conductor Eric Jacobsen, who she married in 2016, and their daughter Jo, who was born a year later.

You could call it the family business, as Jacobsen (who himself comes from a highly accomplished musical family) currently serves as Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (with whom O’Donovan has performed several times),

After years of living and working remotely, bouncing back and forth between Orlando and New York, her family finally put down roots in 2020, which was a time of great transition for many people. “My husband’s been working here since 2015, and we’ve had our house here since 2016,” O’Donovan says. “We would come here periodically, especially him, and rent it out the rest of the time. The reason we came down was because the OPO, like many orchestras in Florida, was able to have a full orchestral season. In 20202021, they had outdoor concerts all around town. It was an incredible feat — I don’t even know how they did it! The reason we came down was because we didn’t want to commute. Now we’re here, and we’re not moving back.”

O’Donovan’s newest album, All My Friends, comes out Friday on Yep Roc Records, an indie label based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, that has released all her albums since 2013. Its predecessor, Age of Apathy (which featured Alison Russell and Madison Cunningham), was nominated for three Grammys last year.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes almost as many people to make an album of this scale. “There’s so many musicians on this

With the release of All My Friends comes a whole slate of supporting shows, which allows O’Donovan to take her new material to some familiar (and not so familiar) settings. She has at least 27 gigs booked so far in 15 states and three countries through late September, including June dates abroad in London, Cambridge, Bristol and the 470-year-old Egeskov Castle in Funen, Denmark. The tour includes everything from an American Legion post in Nashville to Carnegie Hall. She also tours this summer with Hawktail, described as “a progressive bluegrass supergroup,” where the two acts will team for the first time on March 30. Another notable gig sees O’Donovan returning to the Grand Ole Opry, also this month. But O’Donovan’s busy season starts locally at Park Ave CDs, where her official album release party takes place this Friday. (The store will have copious copies of the album on hand, and that’s the best way to buy it — which you should.) O’Donovan will be signing copies of the record as well as performing a live set.

“It’s an album for people who’ve enjoyed folk music in the past, orchestral music in the past,” says O’Donovan, who’ll also be playing the album in its entirety with the OPO in October. “I think I’d like anyone who just likes a good song and a good story to check it out, give it a spin.”

Heads up, beauties. TLU will be on column break next week, but I’ll be back and fully charged after.

LOCAL RELEASES

Veteran musician Michael Raisner has been a longtime chameleon in the Orlando underground. Besides credits in the punk and metal scenes as a member of 2000s bands like The Slurps and Bloodlaser, he also makes electronic music, even penning a soundtrack for the video game “Super Hyperactive Ninja.”

Over the past 15 years or so, he’s been making electronic music under the name Nestrogen. For the vast majority of that time, Nestrogen has been primarily a chiptune act using the LSDj cartridge for Nintendo Game Boy. More recently, however, Raisner has been gradually pushing it past the usual boundaries of the videogame music microgenre.

With the addition of more synthesizers in recent years, Raisner’s been moving into broader sonic terrain. As Nestrogen’s first collection

Is Faded is a fresh horizon of synth music for Nestrogen, with new realms of dimension and mood. Moreover, these songs are fuller pop compositions of extended length, which makes Is Faded the longest Nestrogen release to date.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Palomino Blond, 0 Miles Per Hour, Midhouse, Wells: Miami’s Palomino Blond are one of the most hotly touted Florida bands to rise in recent years. Believe the hype. If you don’t take my word for it, then at least listen to Iggy Pop, who’s gone on record to proclaim them one of the best from his native Miami. Blending indie rock, grunge and shoegaze, their sound is the best 1990s revival cocktail that could only have come from the 2020s. Opening are emergent Orlando indie-rock bands 0 Miles Per Hour, Midhouse and the debuting Wells.

(8 p.m. Thursday, March 21, Will’s Pub, $12-$17)

Claire Vandiver, Cinema Stereo, Rae and the Ragdolls, Annie Dukes: This show packs a strong femme-forward lineup. Topping the marquee is Orlando’s Claire Vandiver, whose merging of roots, rock, pop and indie is a thing of restrained power and mood. It’s a release show for her sensual new single, “Call Me Up and Calm Me Down,” which seduces like a more strapping Cigarettes After Sex and is easily some of Vandiver’s best work to date.

Rounding out the bill will be the dark, stout rock of Jacksonville’s Annie Dukes, the soulful trad-rock of Atlanta’s Rae and the Ragdolls, and the 1970s swagger of Orlando’s Cinema Stereo.

(7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, Will’s Pub, $12-$15)

Is Faded, Nestrogen’s first album in years, features widescreen flights that blend chip music, synthwave and classic synth-pop

in nearly four years, new mini-album Is Faded is the most pronounced manifestation of this evolution yet.

Rather than constructionist chiptune vistas, these seven synth-forward tracks are widescreen flights that blend chip music, synthwave and classic synth-pop. While they’re accented with the 8-bit hardware that’ll be immediately recognizable to vintage gamers, these songs aren’t confined by chiptune orthodoxy.

Ministry, Gary Numan, Frontline Assembly: There are few greater touchstones of industrial music than headliners Ministry. Even after 40 years, Al Jourgensen and company are still a creative locomotive, arriving this time fresh on the fire of a brand-new album, the 16th one in a genre-defining career. Hopiumforthemasses continues Jourgensen’s relentless and jackhammering assault on American idiocy and features great guests like Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan and Jourgensen’s Lard partner, Jello Biafra.

In Ministry’s tradition of excellent billmates, this hall-of-fame lineup also features the legendary likes of new-wave pioneer Gary Numan and electro-industrial icons Front Line Assembly. (7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, Hard Rock Live, $39.50-$50.50)

Lime Cordiale, Windser: Any band so trueblue Aussie as to pay homage to Men at Work’s Colin Hay like Lime Cordiale did with 2022 single “Colin” is all right by me. If this show were only a week earlier, the man himself could’ve popped in and made a real-life cameo with them, since he was also in town performing. But Lime Cordiale are worthy on their own spotlight with svelte and slinky indie pop that’s effortlessly likable. (7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, The Abbey, $25) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

“Cancelled With Tana Mongeau”

The “Cancelled” podcast is hitting the road across North America and making a stop at Orlando’s Hard Rock Live on Wednesday with tea that can only be spilled in-person. Host Tana Mongeau has been canceled so many times — from internet feuds to relationship drama to the TanaCon disaster — that some say she’s actually become impossible to cancel. The internet personality got her following with her storytime videos

on YouTube, which consisted of unfiltered accounts of some of the craziest experiences Mongeau had growing up in Los Angeles. She’s since become infamous for these many scandals and decided to embrace them (after various apology videos, of course). Mongeau and best friend and co-host Brooke Schofield decided to take back the mic after years of scrutiny on the internet and started their own podcast where they gossip about their lives — and the lives of others. Fans enjoy “Cancelled” because it feels like listening in on a juicy debriefing between two best friends after a night out

… basically, exactly what it is. Mongeau and Schofield balance each other out, with Schofield as the voice of reason and Mongeau bringing the raw, confessional comedic side that has netted her a huge following. And her fans wouldn’t have it any other way. 7:30 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., hardrock.com, $34.50$74.50. — Alexandra Sullivan

Modern Moog

Synth magus Mort Garson may no longer be with us, but the bleep-bloop trailblazer left an outsized musical legacy that is spurring on musicians young and old to this day. Garson was one of the first composer-musicians to really put the then-new Moog Modular synth — an imposing wall of wires and dials, not the classic synthpop keyboard — through its paces with relentlessly imaginative (and reverently reissued) albums like the “music for plants” anthology Plantasia and diabolical soundscape Black Mass (guess what that one’s about!). On Friday, celebrate Garson’s life during the Modern Moog event, which sees a handful of local Moogers rally under Garson’s banner. Aaron’s Home does a rare reunion set of space-age ambience. Pressurewave, a clear disciple of Garson who started up the modularfriendly event series Circuit Church, whips up left-field techno from modular synths. My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult

Even amongst the gloriously loose moral standards of the Wax Trax Records roster circa the early 1990s, there were none more depraved than My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. Proudly pro-Satan, eagerly pro-drugs, sexforward and more than willing to resuscitate the thentattered critical rep of disco, TKK had it all. If you were a degenerate. Oh, but there were plenty of them/us back then! Somehow, they made it through the intervening years (relatively) unscathed, and the electro-industrial collective has recently been revisiting classic ’80s and

’90s material on their “Evil Eye” tour. The setlist goes hard on Wax Trax and Interscope-era songs from 1987-1997, with founding members Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy and a cast of musicians that might include a familiar face or two. On this, the final leg of the tour, Orlando will get a taste of synthesized perversion at its best. Opening is synth-punk duo Adult from Detroit and fast-rising electro-pop rulebreaker Kanga. 7 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando.com, $29.50.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj is bringing her biggest tour yet to Orlando: The “Pink Friday 2 World Tour,” in support of her fifth album, Pink Friday 2. The glam rapper is making 57 stops across two continents, including a stop at the Kia Center on Friday. This latest installment in the Minaj era is most notably characterized by the rapper promising the Barbz (her legion of superfans) that they would be going to “Gag City” when they finally heard the album. Fans duly created an entire city using AI called “Gag City,” categorized by scads of pink, dreamlike features closely resembling the album cover art. The tour’s setlist includes Minaj’s newest music as well as some of her best-known hits, divided into three sets. The first features songs from both Pink Friday and Pink Friday 2. The second set is from Grammy award-winning singer and actress Monica, who is also featured on the track “Love Me Enough” on Pink Friday 2. The night culminates with a final set by Minaj with hits like “Superbass” and “Anaconda.” 6 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $135-$315. — AS

Music Fest ORL

Despite its decidedly bare-bones name, the minimalist moniker of Music Fest ORL conceals a top-shelf roster of hip-hop and R&B heavyweights. How about the likes of Keith Sweat, Trick Daddy, Trina, Levelle, Sunshine Anderson, Naomi Joy, Carmen Harrell, Tyesha Williams and Tank, just for starters? Taking place outdoors at the Orlando Amphitheater — don’t sleep on this venue — and, barring unforeseen rain, this should be a perfectly

Pints n’ Paws Craft Beer Festival

Have your dog’s leash in one hand and a beer in the other at the 12th annual Pints n’ Paws fundraiser in Sanford this weekend.

The day features more than 100 area breweries serving up suds for attendees to sample in the company of their furry best friend(s). Those who work up an appetite can try one of the many food trucks on site, including Hot Asian Buns, Jimmy Hula’s and La Parada de Tacos. Enterprising canines can get involved in the Poster Dog Contest, with a chance to be featured on next year’s poster and promotional merch. While the event is free to attend, attendees can purchase tickets for the beer tasting or VIP tickets for early access and commemorative merch. Proceeds from Pints will be donated to local pet rescues. In 2021, Pints n’ Paws donated over $400,000 dollars to various organizations such as Pet Rescue by Judy, Dolly’s Foundation and Central Florida Community Pet Clinic. 1 p.m., Historic Downtown Sanford, Second Street and Sanford Avenue, pintsandpaws.com, $50$65. — Sarah Harwell

24 ORLANDO WEEKLY ● MARCH 20-26, 2024 ● orlandoweekly.com

ARIES (March 21-April 19): I suspect you will soon have far more beginners’ luck than you ever thought possible. For best results — to generate even more wildly abundant torrents of good luck — you could adopt what Zen Buddhists called “beginner’s mind.” That means gazing upon everyone and everything as if encountering it for the first time. Here are other qualities I expect to be flowing freely through you in the coming weeks: spontaneity, curiosity, innocence, candor and unpredictability. To the degree that you cultivate these states, you will invite even more beginner’s luck into your life.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus artist Salvador Dali was prone to exaggerate for dramatic e ect. We should remember that as we read his quote: “Mistakes are almost always of a sacred nature. Never try to correct them. On the contrary: Rationalize them; understand them thoroughly.” While that eccentric advice may not always be 100 percent accurate or useful, I think it will be true and helpful for you in the coming weeks. Have maximum fun making sacred mistakes, Taurus! Learn all you can from them. Use them to improve your life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The professional fun advisers here at Free Will Astrology International Headquarters have concluded that your Party Hardy Potential Rating for the coming weeks is 9.8 (out of 10). In fact, this may be the Party Hardy Phase of the Year for you. You could gather the benefits of maximum revelry and conviviality with minimal side e ects. Here’s a meditation to get you in the right mood: Imagine mixing business and pleasure with such panache that they blend into a gleeful, fruitful synergy.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian author and psychotherapist Virginia Satir (1916–1988) was renowned as the “Mother of Family Therapy.” Her research led her to conclude, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” That 12-hug recommendation seems daunting to achieve, but I hope you will strive for it in the coming weeks. You are in a phase when maximum growth is possible — and pushing to the frontiers of hugging will help you activate the full potential. (P.S.: Don’t force anyone to hug you. Make sure it’s consensual.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Have you been genuinely amazed anytime recently? Have you done something truly amazing? If not, it’s time to play catch-up. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you need and deserve exciting adventures that boggle your soul in all the best ways. You should be wandering out

on the frontiers and tracking down provocative mysteries. You could grow even smarter than you already are if you expose yourself to challenges that will amaze you and inspire you to be amazing.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I invite you to perform a magic spell that will help prepare you for the rich, slippery soul work you have ahead of you. I’ll o er a suggestion, but feel free to compose your own ritual. First, go outside where it’s raining or misting, or find a waterfall. Stand with your legs apart and arms spread out as you turn your face up toward the falling moisture. As you drink it in, tell yourself you will be extra fluid and flowing in the coming weeks. Promise yourself you will stimulate and treasure succulent feelings. You will cultivate the sensation that everything you need is streaming in your direction.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are gliding into the climax of your re-education about togetherness, intimacy and collaboration. The lessons you’ve been learning have deepened your reservoir of wisdom about the nature of love. And in the coming weeks, even further teachings will arrive; even more openings and invitations will be available. You will be o ered the chance to earn what could in e ect be a master’s degree in relationships. It’ll be challenging work, but rewarding and interesting. Do the best as you can. Don’t demand perfection from yourself or anyone else.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Now is not a favorable phase to gamble on unknown entities. Nor should you allow seemingly well-meaning people to transgress your boundaries. Another Big No: Don’t heed the advice of fear-mongers or nagging scolds, whether they’re inside or outside your head. On the other hand, dear Scorpio, the coming weeks will be an excellent time for the following actions. No. 1: Phase out attachments to alliances and love interests that have exhausted their possibilities. No. 2: Seek the necessary resources to transform or outgrow a frustrating fact about your life. No. 3: Name truths that other people seem intent on ignoring and avoiding. No. 4: Conjure simple, small, slow, practical magic to make simple, small, slow, practical progress.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Falling in love is fun! It’s also exciting, enriching, inspiring, transformative, world-shaking and educational. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if we could keep falling in love anew three or four times a year for as long as we live? We might always be our best selves, showing our most creative and generous sides, continually expanding our power to express our soulful intelligence.

Alas, it’s not practical or realistic to always be falling in love with another new person. Here’s a possible alternative: What if we enlarged our understanding of what we could fall in love with? Maybe we would become perpetually infatuated with brilliant teachings, magical places, high adventures, and great art and music. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to cultivate this skill.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I’m perplexed by spiritual teachers who fanatically preach the doctrine that we should BE HERE NOW as much as possible. Living with full enjoyment in the present moment is a valuable practice, but dismissing or demeaning the past is shortsighted. Our lives are forged from our histories. We should revere the stories we are made of, visit them regularly and keep learning from them. Keep this in mind, Capricorn. It’s an excellent time to heal your memories and to be healed by them. Cultivate deep gratitude for your past as you give the old days all your love. Enjoy this quote from novelist Gregory Maguire: “Memory is part of the present. It builds us up inside; it knits our bones to our muscles and keeps our heart pumping. It is memory that reminds our bodies to work, and memory that reminds our spirits to work, too: It keeps us who we are.”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Controversial author William S. Burroughs was a rough, tough troublemaker. But he had some wisdom that will soon be extra useful for you. He said that love is the best natural painkiller available. I bring this to your attention not because I believe you will experience more pain than the rest of us in the coming months. Rather, I am predicting you will have extra power to alleviate your pain — especially when you raise your capacity to give and receive love.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The planet Saturn entered Pisces in March 2023 and won’t depart for good until February 2026. Is that a bad thing or good thing for you Pisceans? Some astrologers might say you are in a challenging time when you must make cutbacks and take on increased responsibility. I have a di erent perspective. I believe this is a phase when you can get closer than ever before to knowing exactly what you want and how to accomplish what you want. In my view, you are being called to shed secondary wishes that distract you from your life’s central goals. I see this period as a homecoming — your invitation to glide into robust alignment with your soul’s code.

Diesel is a year old, and still very much a puppy. He has no idea why his owners left him behind. He doesn’t know his family got a divorce, and neither one of them wanted to keep him. He was bought from a breeder into the only home he has ever known, and now he is here at the shelter. When he first arrived, he was friendly but nervous. He may never have been socialized with other dogs, so in the beginning he would not share his space. But as time went on, he warmed up and has been paired successfully. Diesel is young and headstrong, and at a year old and over 70 pounds, he can be a lot to handle. He is strong, mischievous, and doesn’t always realize his size. Diesel will try to be a lap dog and loves to be close to people. And though to us he is a lot of fun, we can see how a dog like him could be intimidating to some.

He has been at the shelter now for almost 30 days, and a dog this young doesn’t belong behind the kennel bars. Diesel needs a strong and confident adopter who won’t be afraid of his strength and size, who will take him on long walks followed by hour-long snuggling sessions on the sofa. He has been surrendered once already, but his young heart has healed and he is looking for his second chance.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
