DeSantis defends chaotic Amendment 4 implementation, UAW suspends strike, Hamburger Mary’s fights on and other news you may have missed. BY MCKENNA S C H U EL ER AN D N EWS SERVI C E OF FLOR I DA

Former U.S. attorneys general back DeSantis in ousting Orlando-area State Attorney Monique Worrell

Four former U.S. attorneys general filed a brief last week at the Florida Supreme Court backing Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to suspend Orlando-area State Attorney Monique Worrell, who was first elected to the job by voters in 2020 with 66% support. The friend-of-the-court brief, filed by former Attorney General Edwin Meese, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former Attorney General William Barr, accused Worrell of “prosecutorial abdication of duties” and not enforcing “entire categories of laws that did not comport with her policy preferences.” DeSantis on Aug. 9 issued an executive order suspending Worrell, a Democrat elected in the 9th Judicial Circuit, which covers Orange and Osceola counties. Worrell filed a petition at the Supreme Court in an attempt to get her job back and argued that DeSantis did not have a legal basis for the suspension. The four former attorneys general, who worked in Republican administrations, said in Thursday’s brief that the Supreme Court should reject the petition. Worrell has disputed allegations that she did not properly carry out her job. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case Dec. 6.

Florida lawmakers steer $35 million to Jewish schools, organizations

After six weeks on strike, the United Auto Workers union reached tentative contracts with the Big Three auto companies — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) — that could deliver major gains for auto workers, if approved by union membership, and raise standards industry-wide. The deals offer wage increases of 33% over four and a half years, although temporary workers will see even bigger gains. The tentative deal at Stellantis — which affects nearly 70 workers at a Stellantis parts depot in Orlando — also offers enhanced retirement benefits, improved wage progression, the right to strike over plant closures, and some new jobs. Stellantis also agreed to reopen an assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, that has been idle since February and which issued massive layoffs two years ago. Several UAW-represented auto workers in Orlando came to Florida from that Belvidere plant. UAW members will vote on whether to accept or reject the Stellantis contract (and those reached with GM and Ford) soon. If the deal is rejected, workers could go back on strike.

grant program designed to protect communities against extremist attacks. Lawmakers created the state grant program earlier this year but did not fund it. The proposals (SB 6-C and HB 7C) also would direct $25 million to the state Department of Education for grants to full-time Jewish day schools and Jewish preschools. Lawmakers during the session also will consider resolutions (SR 8-C and HR 9C) declaring that the House and Senate “condemn the unprovoked and barbaric attacks against Israel, its citizens, and Americans” and “unequivocally support the right of the State of Israel to exist as a sovereign and independent nation.” The proposed resolutions also “demand the immediate end to any financial support, whether direct or indirect, of Hamas, the Iranian regime, Hezbollah, or any other entity that publicly supports these attacks and other terrorist activities.”

DeSantis, election officials push back on Florida’s felon voting lawsuit

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration, county clerks of court and elections supervisors want a federal judge to toss out a lawsuit challenging the way a 2018 constitutional amendment aimed at restoring felons’ voting rights has been carried out, saying the plaintiffs are seeking an “unprecedented judicial takeover” of voter-registration procedures. Attorneys for the state and county officials across Florida filed a motion last week arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed and disputing allegations of violating the federal Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution. The 2018 state constitutional amendment, known as Amendment 4, was designed to restore voting rights for felons who have completed their sentences. But the lawsuit, filed by the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and four individual plaintiffs in July, contends that a “bureaucratic morass” has prevented people from voting or determining whether they are eligible to vote. Much of the issue stems from a 2019 law (SB 7066) that required felons to pay “legal financial obligations” — fees, fines and other court costs — associated with their convictions before they could be eligible to vote. That requirement has fueled years of controversy. Attorneys for the state and county officials in their motion last week raised a series of arguments, including contending that plaintiffs do not have legal standing and pointing to sovereign immunity.

Orlando restaurant Hamburger Mary’s argued the U.S. Supreme Court should keep in place a statewide preliminary injunction against a Florida law that aims to prevent youth under 18 from attending drag shows. U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell issued the preliminary injunction in June, finding that the law, approved this spring by DeSantis and the Republican-controlled Legislature, violated the First Amendment. While Hamburger Mary’s is the plaintiff in the challenge to the constitutionality of the law, Presnell applied the injunction statewide. Attorneys for Hamburger Mary’s wrote in a 17-page document that the Supreme Court should deny a request by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration that would allow the law to be enforced against all venues in the state except Hamburger Mary’s while a legal battle continues to play out. “HM (Hamburger Mary’s) does not operate its restaurant and present its performances in a vacuum,” the document said. “The artists who perform at HM’s establishments perform in other venues across the state of Florida. If the injunction were limited to HM, other establishments could be subject to penalties under the act for the same performances by the same performers.” While Florida’s new anti-drag law does not specifically mention drag shows (rather, “adult live performances”), it came after the DeSantis administration cracked down on venues in South Florida and Central Florida where children attended drag shows. It also passed this spring amid a wave of bills in Florida and other Republicanled states targeting LGBTQ-related issues. Amid a rise in antisemitism and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Florida lawmakers plan to steer $25 million to Jewish day schools and preschools and another $10 million to nonprofit organizations to help bolster security. Identical proposals filed last week in the House and Senate for a special legislative session that began Monday would establish $10 million in grants for nonprofits including houses of worship, schools, museums and community centers that are “at high risk for violent attacks or hate crimes.” The $10 million would be distributed by the state Division of Emergency Management through the “Nonprofit Security Grant program,” which mirrors a federal orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 8-14, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

The Pulse museum isn’t happening, but OnePulse may not be able to refund donations | Photo by J.D. Casto

ONEPULSE BACKTRACKS

The Pulse foundation announced last week it’s giving up its multimillion-dollar museum project, but individual donors likely won’t be getting their money back BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

T

he OnePulse foundation, founded in the wake of the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, has seemingly backtracked on refunding donations provided to the nonprofit organization specifically for its controversial museum project, which was scrapped last week. WESH News first reported that OnePulse would be refunding museum-related donations after landing an exclusive interview with OnePulse executive director Deborah Bowie shortly after the nonprofit announced it would not be moving forward with the project last week. “Frankly, right now, this community really needs to focus on the memorial. I think the board and the foundation understand that,” Bowie told the TV station, referencing a separate memorial project that’s set to move forward following the city of Orlando’s purchase of the former Pulse property for $2 million. Orlando Weekly reported on this refund opportunity for OnePulse donors last Monday. Initially, a spokesperson for OnePulse had told Orlando Weekly that they believed previous reporting on the refund opportunity was accurate, but had to double-check. However, in a statement shared with Orlando Weekly shortly after our story had been published, Bowie was less clear on what exactly this refund process would look like. “The short answer is, we do not know yet,” she shared, in reference to a potential return of funds. “It is important to remember there are two types of donations that have been made to the

Foundation over the years: restricted and unrestricted gifts.” Unrestricted gifts are donations that aren’t tied to any particular program or project, which Bowie said have already been used for the general operations of OnePulse over the past six years. Restricted gifts refer to those expressly tied to a specific program or project — like the $45 million Pulse museum project proposal, now scrapped, that the organization first proposed in 2019. Earlier this year, OnePulse had already said it would scale back building plans after learning that the project could cost as much as $100 million, coupled with a Survivor’s Walk pathway — that part’s still in the works — and memorial. As of last week, restricted gifts received by the foundation “have been used appropriately and toward that specific donor intent,” Bowie explained in her statement to Orlando Weekly, conceding that “there have been a number of developments in recent days.” “We are in the process of reconciling our activities with this new reality,” she added. At least one emailed response to a donor from OnePulse, shared with Orlando Weekly, indicated that donors will not be getting refunds for donations given to OnePulse for the museum, after all. A digital marketing specialist for OnePulse told one donor — who had contributed both a $500 unrestricted gift not tied to a project and a $2,175 gift restricted to the museum project — that their donations had already been spent by the foundation. The response from OnePulse, similar to Bowie’s official statement, shared that the museum-related donation specifically “has

already been used appropriately and toward your original intent, including the design of the project and purchase of property for the memorial.” Financial support for the museum had already been buoyed by public tax dollars committed for the project, so it wasn’t just donations from individuals coming in to fund it. The nonprofit was awarded a $10 million commitment in public tourist tax development (TDT) dollars from the Orange County government in 2018 specifically for the museum project. At least $6.5 million of that has already been spent on design services and a land purchase, according to the county. At the same time the foundation announced it’d be giving up on the museum project, OnePulse announced it would forfeit to the county the remaining $3.5 million in unused TDT funds for the project as well as the 1.7 acre parcel of land it’d bought for the project, worth $3.5 million. Three million dollars spent on design services for the museum “cannot be recovered,” according to the county. Even more, the state of Florida also allocated in 2020 a $680,000 donation for a “Pulse Memorial and Museum” through its annual appropriations process. According to a 2022 financial statement from OnePulse, posted publicly to its website, the organization received $40,075 in donations from individuals “with donor restrictions” last year alone, and $231,010 from businesses. Donations without restrictions topped $500,000 from individuals and topped $466,000 from businesses. It’s unclear from the financial statement whether all donor-restricted donations were specifically for the museum project, as the foundation also operates a scholarship program and organizes other events throughout the year. In a separate tax filing, the organization disclosed $2.2 million in total contributions and grants in 2022 and $2.6 million in total revenue, which was exceeded by $3.4 million in total expenses. The organization, founded by former Pulse club co-owner Barbara Poma, has faced scrutiny over the years for paying executives over $100,000 in annual compensation. Poma, who was vacationing in Cancun the night of the Pulse massacre, received $249,580 in reportable compensation from the organization last year as founder and former CEO, according to its 2022 tax filing. Some survivors of the Pulse shooting, which killed 49 people and gravely wounded more than 50, have called on the foundation to dissolve itself and redistribute its remaining assets to survivors and families of victims, some of whom still face steep medical bills and ongoing physical and mental health problems related to the tragedy. The OnePulse foundation was founded with the expressed intent of providing “immediate financial assistance” to affected victims and developing a permanent memorial to honor the lives lost, according to initial paperwork filed. A coalition of survivors, victims’ families and community allies have also called for a forensic audit of OnePulse, a third-party inspection of the former Pulse building on South Orange Avenue, and a criminal investigation into code violations and unpermitted renovations that were documented by the city inside the nightclub. Some survivors believe those elements of the club not up to code hindered escape and rescue the night of the shooting. Survivors filed a complaint with Orlando police over the latter in August. Have you tried to seek a refund for a donation to OnePulse Foundation and received a response that your donation is nonrefundable? Contact us by email at tips@orlandoweekly.com to share and/or forward the emailed response you received from OnePulse with us. CRISIS ACTORS

Florida Sen. Lauren Book wants to strengthen regulation of fake abortion clinics (‘crisis pregnancy centers’) funded by taxpayers. She also filed legislation that would ban protesting within 150 feet of (real) abortion clinics BY MCKENNA S CH U EL ER

F

lorida Senate Democratic leader Lauren Book has filed two bills aimed at protecting abortion access in Florida and protecting millions of taxpayer dollars from being funneled into anti-abortion resource centers that are subject to little oversight. Sen. Book, who represents parts of Broward County, filed a bill last week (SB 256) that would enact stronger regulatory requirements for state-funded crisis pregnancy centers, which are nonmedical facilities that often advertise abortion-related services without actually providing them. They’re typically affiliated with religious organizations that oppose abortion, and don’t have to be licensed or inspected in Florida in order to operate. They’re also not subject to HIPAA, the federal patient privacy law. “Women deserve access to legitimate and trusted reproductive healthcare services, and the freedom to safely receive care without fear of misinformation, harassment, or harm,” Sen. Book, a Democrat who was arrested earlier this year for protesting abortion bans, said in a statement. “It’s long past time for Florida to prioritize women’s health, protect the safety of doctors and patients, and ensure that public funds are directed toward accurate and accountable healthcare services,” she added.

There are over 160 of these crisis pregnancy centers, also known as pregnancy resource centers, in the state of Florida alone, according to a tracker from Abortion Access Front. They outnumber actual abortion clinics in Florida three to one. And to clarify: They do not offer abortion services. Approximately 100 of Florida’s anti-abortion pregnancy centers are overseen by the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, a private, tax-exempt nonprofit that the state tasks with overseeing and pumping funds into these pregnancy centers. That’s according to its online location database. Only about half of those locations are listed in a 2021 tax filing for organizations to which they distributed funds in excess of $5,000. About eight locations promoted by the nonprofit are within 50 miles of downtown Orlando, with names like “Apopka Pregnancy Center” and “Beyond Pregnancy Care.” Florida is one of at least 13 states that funds these anti-abortion pregnancy centers, funneling millions of dollars in taxpayer money to the anti-abortion movement. Anti-abortion pregnancy centers, which advertise services such as free pregnancy tests and free ultrasounds, have been known to provide medically inaccurate information — claiming abortion causes cancer, for instance. Many also often advertise themselves as “medical” facilities without having a medical license or any

licensed healthcare professionals on staff. The legislation filed by Book would require pregnancy centers to provide information that is medically accurate — with fines for those who fail to comply — and would require the state Department of Health to complete annual financial and compliance audits. According to Floridians for Reproductive Freedom, a coalition of groups that support abortion rights, oversight of these facilities has grown more lax over time. Book’s attempt to bolster that is certainly a timely effort. Crisis pregnancy centers got a big boost in state funding under Florida’s new abortion law, which gifts $25 million in recurring annual funding for CPCs, up from $4.45 million — a fivefold increase. Sen. Book’s bill, entitled “Pregnancy and Wellness Services,” wouldn’t affect pregnancy centers that don’t receive state funding, such as Choices Women’s Clinic. Choices is a private, religious nonprofit based in Central Florida that operates a facility in Orlando on West Colonial Drive and a location in Oviedo near the University of Central Florida. The nonprofit, which is explicitly anti-abortion in nature, is planning to open a new location in Kissimmee, less than one mile from the city’s only abortion clinic, in December. Its stated mission is to “CHANGE abortion in Orlando until there are ZERO.” “Our state claims to be a beacon of freedom, but abortion bans, health care restrictions, and the funneling of $25 million annually into fake clinics that peddle anti-abortion propaganda infringe upon those principles,” said Book.“Until women are free to make their own choices about reproductive health, our state is not truly free.” Book also filed a bill (SB 254) that would prohibit protesting or picketing within 150 feet of licensed health care facilities, including abortion clinics. The bill would specifically prohibit activity that’s done “with the intent to harass or disturb an individual in or about such facility or to disturb or disrupt the operations of the facility.” Violators would be subject to arrest and a second-degree misdemeanor charge — provided they don’t adhere to a warning from law enforcement to knock it off and disperse. Law enforcement would first have to give them a warning citation before any charges are pressed. Such a prohibition would have local relevance. One of Orlando’s two abortion clinics, the Center of Orlando for Women, is visited nearly every day by protesters. One of the regular protesters, John Barros, has been protesting the clinic’s operation for 20 years and is present outside most weekdays. A local volunteer clinic escort group guards the premises with the clinic’s permission, escorting patients inside its doors and back to their vehicles after they leave. While the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act of 1994 makes it a federal crime to use force or threat of force, physical obstruction, intentional injury, and intimidation against abortion providers and their patients, it does not outlaw nonviolent protest. For example: shouting at people, chanting, following people as they walk back to their cars and holding up signs. It’s unclear if this bill would hold up in the courts, however, if anti-abortion activists tried to pursue legal action. Similar restrictions on protest activity outside of abortion clinics have faced legal challenges, and several of Florida’s Supreme Court justices have ties to the anti-abortion movement themselves. Sen. Book’s office did not respond to Orlando Weekly’s request for a comment on this potential complication ahead of publication. The likelihood of Book’s legislation being passed, or even considered, by Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature is slim. But if the bills were to pass, the crisis pregnancy center bill would take effect July 1, 2024, and the ban on protesting outside healthcare facilities would take effect Oct. 1, 2024. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

How can Rocky Horror, that once-shocking artifact of 1970s glam-rock, speak now to a younger generation unfazed by sexual fluidity? Little Radical Theatrics might have an answer to that question

It’s been 50 years since Richard

O’Brien’s gender-bending B-movie parody The Rocky Horror Show debuted in a tiny London theater, and 30 since I joined the worldwide cult surrounding its cinematic spinoff. And even though it’s been half a decade since the Rich Weirdoes — the live Rocky Horror Picture Show shadowcast I produced — lost their longtime home at Universal CityWalk, the troupe continues to perform sold-out seasonal shows across Central Florida. But does this once-shocking artifact of 1970s glam-rock, which utterly bewildered my teenage niece during her recent inaugural viewing, still speak to a younger generation unfazed by sexual fluidity? That’s one of the key questions I posed to director Travis Eaton and producer Fatima Viegas of Little Radical Theatrics (littleradicaltheatricsinc.com), whose production of The Rocky Horror Show takes over the Lowndes Shakespeare Center’s intimate Mandell Theater Nov. 10 through the 19th. The last time I talked to the pair, they were preparing for last

summer’s production of The Addams Family, which they’ve followed with successful runs of Jesus Christ Superstar, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Matilda. “We’ve been doing everything a little radical and not exactly the way you’d expect it to be done. And we’ve only seen our pool of talent and audiences continue to grow,” says Eaton, adding, “The last year and a half has been a period of some really great growth, both artistically as far as what we’re trying to bring to the community, and the community response in showing up and becoming our patrons.” Little Radical has particularly noticed growth among the 35-to-55-year-old demographic, which Eaton calls “the heart of our audience right now.” Eaton attributes that growth to the messaging of their selected shows, which “always is about acceptance; taking people as they are for who they are, and accepting them, [which resonates with] late Gen X/early millennial and down.” That mission of promoting acceptance and tolerance made Rocky Horror a perfect fit for Little Radical’s repertoire. Eaton recalls discovering the movie at high-school theater parties, and Viegas calls the show “something that I wanted to do for a long time.” Eaton credits both the film and play for helping “mainstream audiences of the ’70s begin to accept [different

sexual expressions and lifestyles] because they were wrapped in this weird alien sci-fi.”He plans to honor the film’s fandom with an emcee-hosted preshow and audience participation prop bags, while using scripted cue cards to (hopefully) control the callback chaos. “We want you to have fun, we want you to have the experience, but let’s not overpower the fact that it’s a live human and you’re not just yelling over a TV screen that can’t hear you,” Eaton explains. Some of the retorts and rituals I learned at Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings a quarter-century ago would get you canceled today, and some of the key lyrics of its iconic anthem (particularly “transvestite” and “transsexual”) are anathema to today’s LGBTQIA+ community. But “we have to perform the script as it is written, verbatim, word for word. The words will never change; how we use those words is the important factor,” says Eaton. In Little Radical’s vision of the show,“Some of the language that’s outdated, we can use it as a reclamation of that word, or redefining of that word. … It’s about celebrating the communities represented there, and not using the words as outsiders.” In many other ways, Little Radical Theatrics is taking a fresh approach to the show, updating

its aesthetics with references to 1980s slasher films and upending the text’s traditional gender balance through nontraditional casting, starting with nonbinary performer Marlo Coffin in the titular role. “The idea of casting Rocky in a body-positive way is something we often don’t get,”says Eaton. “The idea of the chiseled muscle man is another concept that I wanted to push back against. Then there was also the idea that they are completely gender non-conforming, and the idea that they’ve been created that way on purpose was prescient to me [as] a commentary [saying] we all exist in all of these forms, and Rocky can be just as much of a man as Brad.” Jennifer Rae Paxton, who stars as Frank N. Furter, also helps Little Radical’s production flip the standard script in more ways than one. Onstage, Eaton says Paxton’s interpretation of the homicidal antihero “presents differently about what the concepts of the gender binary are, as far as now I’m looking at a woman assigned at birth and their understanding of traditional masculinity.” And behind the scenes, Paxton has served as the production’s intimacy coordinator, a role Eaton advocates for. “If we take the discussions around intimacy coordination and intimacy blocking out of the director’s realm, all of a sudden actors feel more free to be a part of the discussion and to collaborate in that space, [and] we gather true consent far easier when there’s someone who’s an intermediary for that discussion,” Eaton says. “I don’t think we could have done this show without having that.” Perhaps the most daunting adversary Little Radical faces isn’t rival scientists or disloyal henchmen, but the venue crunch faced by all of Orlando’s nomadic theater companies. “I am trying to find my own home at some point, but it’s difficult,” says Viegas. “I’m having difficulty finding a venue, but the prices [and] fees that they charge are just really beyond my budget. … It’s hard to find a venue that I would like to call my own.” I’m hoping they find an affordable place where they can not only dream it, but be it. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

At Camille, chef Tung Phan gives guests a culinary sense of the historical connection between France and Vietnam | Photos by Rob Bartlett

PHAN BOY

Camille, the French-Vietnamese head-turner in Baldwin Park, is a true Orlando original BY FA IYAZ KARA

I

n the span of a little more than two years, chef Tung Phan has taken his FrenchVietnamese concept from residency pop-up at East End Market to its very own permanent (and strikingly handsome) house of fine dining in Baldwin Park. No question: Camille, named after Phan’s first-born daughter, is the sort of restaurant that’s been intentionally and systematically designed, planned and curated to attract the sparkle of Michelin stars and James Beard Awards. Seductive trappings? Check. Chef’s tasting counter? Check. Matching uniforms, flowers tweezered onto plates? Check and double-check. But all this extra-ness doesn’t change the fact that food quality and customer care at Camille are put ahead of nailing a tire company’s red plaque up on a wall. In fact, I had to declare Phan’s chim cút the “Best Tasting Menu Dish”of the year in the 2023 Best of Orlando® Staff Picks, after partaking in Camille’s summer tasting menu (10 courses for the rarefied price of $195) back in June. The air-dried, lemongrass-brined quail, stuffed with Vietnamese broken rice and served with a scallion and ginger puree with pickled ramps and confit of quail leg, was a paragon of the FrancoIndochine dishes Phan elevates to an artform. Bánh xèo, the crepe-like Viet staple in which

pork, shrimp, onions and bean sprouts are stuffed into a savory sleeve, is reimagined here with chunks of Florida spiny lobster positioned onto a ring of pesto fashioned from Thai basil, cilantro, culantro and roasted garlic. Shards of tuile are carefully balanced on the lobster, while a passionfruit nuóc chám with bourbon barrel-aged fish sauce is spooned into the center. It’s a rich and crackling mouth-puckerer of a dish. Photogenic as hell, too. More stunning displays: a trio of small indulgences, or “an choi,” comprising a tea egg in a nest made of feuille de brick pastry feathered with shaved black truffle; an intricate “banh mi” tartlet layered with pâté foam, kaluga caviar and wee rolls of pickled beet and radish; and

moulard duck wrapped in local greens and squash blossoms served with a delicate black sesame-hoisin dip. The creations all tap into Phan’s flavor memories and, in turn, make memorable dishes themselves. We won’t easily forget Dungeness crab prepared two ways — as a bite-sized tart dressed with salad burnet leaves, Thai chili threads and a makrut lime vinaigrette; and as a curry crafted from the crab’s tomalley thickened with tapioca. A5 wagyu, naturally, found its way onto the menu, but so did mutton snapper in coconut sauce, as well as a palate-cleanser of watermelon sorbet layered on coconut panna cotta with pickled watermelon rind, a white chocolate disc and bird’s-eye chili salt. The procession ended with banana cake inlaid with Chantilly served over a brush of ginger caramel, capping what was easily one of the most original meals I’ve had in this city. On a much-anticipated return visit, we opted for an intimate booth in the dining ro o m fo r a seven-courser ($135) that spotlighted a few new dishes — a sheet of semolina pasta cloaking short rib braised in aromatics à la bò kho, or Vietnamese beef stew, for one. Japanese pumpkin kept it seasonal, while

CAMILLE 4962 New Broad St. camilleorlando.com $$$$

spiced pumpkin seeds added just the right amount of crunch. There was squab from South Carolina served with a block of Vietnamese sticky rice. A plum wine gastrique and drops of 100-year-old balsamic ($30 upcharge) lent the dark-fleshed bird the bite it needed. No question Phan can sauce — there hasn’t been a dish of his where I haven’t boorishly fingered every lick of slick from the plate. A thickened puddle of fishbone stock bolstered with tamarind, tomato, pineapple and chili was no exception. It pooled around “noodles” cut from king trumpet mushrooms holding Antarctic salmon and salmon skin dotted with crème fraîche, salmon roe and Cajun seasoning. A silky liquid of palm sugar and fish sauce fortified the Australian wagyu, while a Vietnamese coffee-crème anglaise nearly upstaged the sweet potato bread with candied pecans and “gold” ice cream made from caramelized milk solids and white chocolate. A sake “tasting” ($130 for six) overseen by beverage director Derrick Goodman can make a special meal all the more special (and a pricey meal all the pricier). But Phan’s ultimate goal is to leave his guests with a sense of the historical connection of France and Vietnam and, as an extension, of the effects the colonizer has on the colonized, and vice-versa. And in today’s world, the poignancy of Phan’s message is not lost. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

ELVIS AND SHE

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla memorably re-creates the world of the teenager who fell for Elvis Presley — and then fled her gilded cage BY CH U CK WILS ON

A

s Priscilla, filmmaker Sofia Coppola’s of a polite young Army officer (Luke Humphrey) engrossing new film begins, it’s 1959 who invites her to join him and his wife for a and 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu party in the coming weekend at the off-base (Cailee Spaeny) is living in Wiesbaden, West home of his good friend Elvis Presley. He’s sure Germany, where her stepfather, an Air Force Elvis will enjoy meeting a young person from captain, is stationed. Lonely for her friends back America, especially one from the South. A 24-year-old man setting out to woo an in Texas, Priscilla spends a lot of time painting her nails, spritzing her hair with Aqua Net, and adolescent girl is unsettling, then and now, but reading fan magazines about the stars of the Coppola leaves judgment to the viewer, and day, among them Fabian, Bobby Darin and that instead holds tight to Priscilla’s worldview, as recalled in her 1985 memparadigm-shifting sensaoir, Elvis and Me. Priscilla tion, Elvis Presley (Jacob is rightly sure that her Elordi), who just happens PRISCILLA parents (Ari Cohen and to be in Germany, too, Directed by Sofia Coppola Dagmara Dominczyk) serving out his own milin theaters Nov. 3 will refuse to give her itary service. A24 permission to accept the This is a story about a invitation, but they eventime when people drank tually give in. The polite Coca-Cola from a glass bottle, and indeed, in the opening sequence, officer wins them over. Riding in the backseat Priscilla, wearing a pretty pink sweater, is sitting on the way to the party, her best coat buttoned at a drugstore counter, sipping a Coke with a up tight, Priscilla wears a pleased smile — not, straw. (Elvis drinks his Cokes with a straw, too.) one senses, because she’s on her way to meet a A man approaches. Priscilla has caught the eye star, but because she won out over her parents.

She’s 14, and set free suddenly, like a heroine in a story. That freedom will prove to be boundlessly enticing. If the first half of Priscilla is about what happens when two young people ride fame and exhilaration into a marriage they’re not the least bit prepared for, and the second half is what happens when reality pops their balloon, as it were. The party Priscilla attends in West Germany is addictively fabulous, for her, and for us. There is Elvis, mad handsome, in a room that’s halflit and warm, like a jazz club. Elvis is instantly charmed by Priscilla even as he realizes she’s absurdly young. Then he goes to the piano and, just for her, pounds out a thrilling, blistering “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and that, maybe, is the first time Priscilla realizes, “Oh, wow, I’m with Elvis.” Elordi never sings again in the film, but in that one number, and in the ways in which his Elvis remains a brilliantly gifted, easily manipulated fool, he becomes an icon who’s more relatable than the version depicted in Baz Luhrmann’s over-amped Elvis. Coppola is interested in the star’s inner angst only insofar as it affects Priscilla, who is independent-minded enough to find her way to Elvis but not strong enough to prevent that rebellious spirit from being subsumed by his will. It will take Priscilla more than a decade to hear own voice again. Spaeny plays Priscilla from age 14 to 28, flawlessly, in a performance that seems likely to become a classic. Much of the film is taken up with the minutiae of Elvis and Priscilla’s romance, which is interrupted by his remaining military service, Hollywood film duties and the need to win over her parents. Elvis begins taking prescription drugs to stay awake and go to sleep, and Priscilla begins popping them too, to keep up with him, to be a part of his world. They help her to transform into the glammed-out arm candy Elvis needs, even as their subsequent marriage and the birth of Lisa Marie eventually pull her back to Earth. She tries to grow up, to evolve, but he doesn’t. Increasingly miserable in his career, Elvis broods and becomes unpredictable. Suddenly angry, he strikes Priscilla, then rushes to apologize, saying, “You know I’d never hurt you in any real way.” Like Coppola’s best films — The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette — Priscilla is evocatively tactile. Its rooms, from Priscilla’s teenage bedroom to Elvis’s club-like German digs to Graceland itself, are rich in detail and texture. We can feel ourselves in those rooms, alongside Priscilla, who likes to rub her toes in the shag carpeting. Priscilla is partly a movie about the joy of being in exotic places you never expected to be in and the time it can take, the years even, before the moment arrives when you realize the room you once loved is now soulless and empty. You think, oh so clearly: I gotta get outta here. At age 28, Priscilla Presley lived that moment, got into her car and drove away from the land of plenty, making her a heroine worthy of a movie to call her own. feedback@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 8-14, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Premieres Wednesday:

The Billionaire, the Butler, and the Boyfriend — Learn all about the national scandal that erupted in France after filthy-rich L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt lavished hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and gifts on a younger male friend. His defense? “Because I’m worth it.” (Netflix) The Buccaneers — An unfinished novel by Edith Wharton yields an eight-episode miniseries in which rich American party girls of the late 1800s travel to England to nab well-bred aristocrats for husbands. If Wharton had lived 150 years later, I think we know how the book would have ended: The tabloids find out which one is half Black and never let her alone. (Apple TV+)

Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld — You’ll never guess where a bunch of German hackers ran their Dark Web operation from: a genuine NATO bunker! OK, maybe that’s a spoiler. But still, isn’t it nice to know that organization is good for something? (Netflix) Escaping Twin Flames — One month after Prime Video ran an exposé of Christian dating service Twin Flames Universe, Netflix gets into the act with its own three-part investigation. What’s left to uncover? Oddly, one of them might know what happened to David Miscavage’s wife. Damnedest thing. (Netflix) Robbie Williams — Yes, it’s going to take four episodes to do justice to the biggest-selling recording artist in U.K. history. Or as

Or as we call it in America, “next week.” (Netflix) Birth/Rebirth — Comparisons to Cronenberg have followed this Sundance 2023 shocker about a morgue worker who finds there’s a heavy price to pay for bringing a little girl back from the dead. Hey, tell me about it. You try finding a midnight screening of that PAW Patrol movie. (Shudder) Dina Hashem: Dark Little Whispers — The New York comic and Daily Show writer takes to the stage to lament the pitfalls of being soft-spoken. To be fair, it would probably help if she used a microphone. (Prime Video)

The Killer — Se7en director David Fincher and writer Andrew Kevin Walker reunite to tell the story of a hitman (Michael Fassbender) who struggles to keep himself together after a job goes awry. It’s arriving on streaming after a theatrical run that was typically just short enough to deny anybody serious residuals. But yeah, let’s talk about how coldly amoral contract killing is. (Netflix)

Premieres Monday:

The Lady Bird Diaries — Conversations with the late Lady Bird Johnson reveal what it was like to be First Lady during one of America’s most controversial presidencies. Topics of discussion include the relative merits of the Vietnam conflict and whether LBJ was really packing the kind of hog everybody said. (Hulu)

Premieres Tuesday:

Criminal Code — The real-life workings of Brazil’s Department of Federal Police are the inspiration for an action series that puts the DPF on the trail of big-time thieves. The first mystery for them to solve: “Were we ourselves involved in any way?” (Netflix) How to Become a Mob Boss — The snarky, Peter Dinklage-hosted series of self-actualization shows turns its focus to the ins and outs of running a criminal network. Listen, you know the joke here is going to be something about a streamer being the best place to come for that kind of tutelage. So why don’t we just skip it, and you can tell me how your Mom is doing? (Netflix) A Murder at the End of the World — Looking for the intersection point between Knives Out and Halt and Catch Fire, this mystery series presents it as a novel twist that the lead sleuth in a multi-suspect murder case is a “Gen-Z hacker.” Apparently, the hardest part was getting time off from her day job at NATO. (Hulu) The Netflix Cup: Swing to Survive — Racers from Formula 1: Drive to Survive and pro golfers from Full Swing pair up to play a live eight holes from Las Vegas. Sounds like the golfers have the natural advantage, so maybe next time they’ll balance things out by having everybody try to merge onto I-4 from the 408 with a pregnant woman in the backseat. (Netflix)

Fame After Fame — Now that the Spanish trash TV magazine Sálvame is over, its top personalities have to look for honest jobs. And of course they’re doing it for the reality cameras, because you go with what you know. I mean, Harvey Levin wouldn’t apply at Jersey Mike’s if he knew no one was watching. (Netflix)

Suburræterna — Italy’s Suburra crime saga enters a new chapter, in an eight-episode series that finds Rome in disarray and up for grabs by the cleverest criminal. Shouldn’t they just pick whomever Matt Gaetz likes? (Netflix)

For All Mankind – An alternate 2003 is the setting for Season 4, in which the squabbling nations of Earth vie for control of a resourcerich asteroid. See, if they were one nation under a groove, they could just exhort the cosmos to back dat assteroid up. (Apple TV+)

Trevor Wallace: Pterodactyl — In his first stand-up special, the California comedian and YouTuber tries to find that sweet spot between making fun of fuccbois and outing himself as one of them. Just like you have to do every night at Bahama Breeze. (Prime Video)

interested in the film was that after the crash of 2008, it dawned on me that this was history! This happened to people, it’s happening to other people right now, and it could happen to us in the future. We’re not immune to history, we’re not inoculated against history. When we look at the landscape of The Kid, when we look at this kind of desperation, it’s not in the ghetto of the past. It could be us in five years, and for some of us now. A lot of Chaplin’s films have awesome physical comedy but I think he always wanted people to see what he experienced as a child. When I score it, I don’t always play it for laughs. Speaking of, your performance along with the film — does it come from your Silent Movies album, which includes The Kid in a four-minute run time? Silent Movies doesn’t exactly correspond to the film. It was a bunch of ideas that had a visual function like a film score, and again, a film score to life in that I felt [they] had an atmospheric quality in a way as if they existed in the real world. I do use some of the themes from that record and the melodies when scoring this film. I work according to motifs in the film.

THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE Marc Ribot meets Charlie Chaplin in Orlando this week BY KYLE EAGLE

“A

film score to life” is what guitarist and composer Marc Ribot calls his upcoming performance at the Dr. Phillips Center. The singular musician is set to play a solo interpretive soundtrack to Charlie Chaplin’s 1921 comedy classic (or dramedy, as we’ll discuss), The Kid. Neither need an introduction, but … Chaplin is a comedy giant whose shoulders others still stand upon. Ribot is one of the most prolific musicians of our time. With boundless diversity, his guitar has graced the music of everyone from Tom Waits to Norah Jones, Elton John, the Black Keys and Gal Costa, along with a long list of his own projects. Equally at home with Latin, no wave, nu jazz, crooners, folkies, pop stars, punk rockers and film scores — it’s all fair game in Ribot’s musical realm. His membership in the seminal Lounge Lizards led bandleader John Lurie to state that “Marc is a musical genius. So

many ideas are coming out of that guy that it is actually often a problem.” Not a bad problem to have. This will be an evening of dual genius, in which the past and the present collide physically and historically. Ribot will soundtrack the film with an acoustic guitar that’s as old as the film itself — as are some of the underlying issues expressed in the story. Which is where our conversation with Ribot began … You mentioned this is “a film score to life.” Would you elaborate on that? In the movie Charlie Chaplin plays a very poor single man, his signature Tramp character, who winds up through strange circumstances raising an abandoned child. The film shows how it affects him along with Chaplin’s character’s relationship with him, which is a theme I play to intermittently throughout the film.

What a lot of people don’t understand was that the set of this film was a detailed reconstruction of the streets Chaplin grew up on in East London. So the extreme poverty and the extreme bleakness of those streets — that existed. When I was a white middle-class kid growing up in suburban South Orange, New Jersey, in the 1960s United States, that kind of poverty seemed a million miles away, a million years away. Of course it wasn’t a million miles away; people were living in equal poverty a few miles away in Newark and in many other areas of the world. And it wasn’t a million years away. That’s why this film is still relevant today, a century later. It’s sad, perplexing and, at the same time, darkly funny. We’re now further away from the time when I was a kid, and from the time that the movie The Kid was made. One of the reasons I was

This must be where the rubber hits the road? That Marc Robot musical magic that you’re renowned for! The film is not a setlist. It’s not where you play one song after another. The different visual and emotional elements of the film get their own theme, but I‘m not just repeating a piece of music. I might modulate it. Break it down in certain ways. Play it faster or slower, maybe reharmonize it. You tie the musical themes to the emotion and dramatic and comedic pieces to the themes of the score, giving it unity and power. There’s that kind of Charlie Chaplin chaos, where stuff just goes crazy. There’s one scene with this tough guy character who tries to beat up Charlie and other moments like that, that deserve their own theme. What works in film scoring isn’t simple repetition, but development. Where you take a scene and treat it differently. In different contexts, but there is something that you are repeating, maybe just a few notes from the melody of another scene or character’s theme, and as these repeat over the course of the film, the way it develops is what gives the score its power. Late-breaking news: OW has heard from a very reliable source that Marc Ribot will play a brief set of solo material to open the evening. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

From the sheer range of his taste and pursuits, Orlando’s Jeff Hindman is a music head after my own heart. OG ravers around here remember the pounding drum-and-bass sets by DJ Jeffee from the dance-music golden era of the 1990s. Longtime Americana scenesters should recall the vintage country stylings of DJ White Lightning (of WPRK radio show “Pickin’Grinnin’and Sinnin’”) and classic country band Giddy Up Go. But probably few know that Hindman was the same guy wearing all these guises. In establishing a name in both those two unlikely poles on the music spectrum, this local chameleon has cut one of the most interesting footprints in Orlando music history. If you’re still scratching your head over the duality of Hindman’s interests, his latest project might just scramble your brain altogether. Jeff Hindman’s brand-new vehicle is a band project called Shampoo Tears that’s rooted in neither dance nor country but rather indie pop. Currently a duo of songwriter Hindman and lead guitarist Hope Russo, Shampoo Tears officially debuts today with the release of the Benji EP. The album’s four tracks introduce the band with a sound that rides a dreamy frequency between synth-pop and jangle-pop. The soft electronics set a wispy backdrop for the balmy melodies, while the chiming guitars lend organic tones and gentle sparkle. With sweet and economical arrangements, Shampoo Tears arrive on the scene like a beckoning zephyr. While the band rehearses to eventually become a live act, Benji is now available both digitally for download/streaming and as a limited-edition cassette on Bandcamp.

Jeff Hindman’s new vehicle is a band — Shampoo Tears, a duo with guitarist Hope Russo — that just dropped the Benji EP. The songs within ride the dreamy frequency between synth-pop and jangle-pop CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Tilly Electronics, Limo Scene, KT Kink: With its synthesis of art and dance, long-running local series Panic! Underground is one of the city’s most stylish club nights for good reason. Seemingly custom-tailored to the occasion, Tilly Electronics are coming all the way from Germany to be the latest special guest to manifest Panic’s ethos on stage. Costumed head to toe like Yip-Yip reborn as fashionistas, this duo are a visual feast who thread a striking needle between new wave and disco. The Floridian openers will bring their own color and flair to the party. Jacksonville’s Limo Scene revive both the sound and the imagery of the neon 1980s, while Orlando’s KT Kink will drill into your soul with her pounding synth sounds. Panic Underground resident DJs NM and Key Tone will keep it deep in between. All told, it’ll be another well-curated showcase by these leaders of Orlando’s avant-garde dance

scene. (9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, Iron Cow, $12$20) Tear Sponsor, Alien Observer, Black Caligula, Will Bess: Even in a strong week for underground electronic music, this bill is a shining standout as a forward-looking showcase of young prowlers of the experimental fringe. Baltimore headliner Tear Sponsor specialize in synth-punk minimalism that’s capable of a surprising range of dark moods and melodies. Jacksonville’s Black Caligula is even more confrontational, with harsh and harrowing transmissions that come from the brink of both music and sanity. Promising new Orlando act Alien Observer is one to watch with a distilled electronic sound crafted with real taste and aesthetic. And Will Bess of noisy no-wave band Warm Frames will make a solo debut. DJ Jas000n and host and drag star Kissa Death keep it all connected. (9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, Stardust Video & Coffee, $10) Phoenix: With some of the most hook-heavy anthems of the 21st century so far, Phoenix have earned a spot alongside Daft Punk, M83 and Air as not just one of France’s greatest musical exports but one of the best pop bands of their generation, period. Even without the conceptuality of those peers, Phoenix have parlayed effortless indie smarts and laser-cut melodic acumen into moments of sheer pop perfection. Now, they return to Orlando behind last year’s Alpha Zulu, their best album in at least a dozen years. Their sterling smash hits alone would be enough live incentive, but their concerts always cram a dazzling, arena-scale show into a midsize venue. Multi-talented entertainer Joji is taking Orlando by storm this week. Joji, a self-taught entertainer, gained his fame on YouTube and Jackass. The AustralianJapanese singer-songwriter walked away from his YouTube kingdom in 2017, hanging up characters like Filthy Frank and “the Pink Guy” to fully pursue music after becoming a GarageBand geek. To date, Joji’s 2022 album Smithereens has yielded several moody singles, including “Slow Dancing in the Dark,” “Die for You” and “Glimpse of Us.” Joji’s Pandemonium tour date in Orlando features support from Kenny Beats, Sam Gellaitry, Lil Toe and Savagerealm, and this is the sole Florida stop. 7 p.m., Amway Center, 400 W. Similar to Depeche Mode (odd comparison, yes! But bear with us; also they played here recently so it fits, you hippies), the passing of David Crosby has left CSN without the C and Graham Nash without his telepathic harmony brother.
