Market will help alleviate risk at a frequently dangerous intersection. The crosswalk is one small part of a master plan for the road that was first shared in 2019. The plan calls for expanded sidewalks and a 12-foot-wide path for pedestrian and cyclist use. The report noted that 8,000 people live 10 minutes away from Corrine Drive, but are wary of walking around there due to unsafe conditions. Orlando has been named the deadliest city for pedestrians in the U.S. several times, only falling in the most recent rankings because other cities saw their death tolls rise. Though the city is no longer the most dangerous place for pedestrians, it still isn’t particularly pleasant to walk around, but that’s not to say work isn’t being done. Initiatives like the one on Corrine Drive are popping up all over the area as part of a continuing project to make Orlando less car-dependent. Tanya Wilder, director of the city’s transportation department, recently told Orlando Weekly that her goal “is to diversify and to focus beyond just roads and make it more people-centric than carcentric.”

Audubon Park gets a little bit safer, Orange County schools sued for enforcing ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law, Gen-Z abortion activist uses Gaetz’s hate against him, and other news you may have missed in the past week. »

Abortion activist raises more than $2 million for reproductive health care after being mocked by Gaetz A fundraiser started by a teenage abortion activist who was mocked by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has now raised more than $2 million for abortion care. Olivia Julianna, a 19-year-old Texan who works with the political group Gen Z for Change, was thrust into the national spotlight when Gaetz shared a clip of her discussing his speech at a recent Tampa conference. In that speech, Gaetz belittled the appearance of abortion activists. “They’re like five-foot-two, 350 pounds, and they’re like ‘Give me my abortions or I’ll get up and march and protest,’” Gaetz said at the Turning Point USA conference. Gaetz saw Julianna’s criticism of him on TikTok and shared it to his Twitter followers, again taking the opportunity to mock abortion activists’ appearances. Julianna turned that move on its head and used it to fundraise for abortion access. As of this writing, Julianna’s fund has raised more than $2.1 million. “Representative Gaetz’s comments were reprehensible, disgusting, and outright despicable, but I am glad he directed his bigotry in my direction,” she said in a statement last week. “We have now turned hatred into health care, and people across the country will be able to get access to abortion services because of it.”

Majority of Orlando-area GOP congressional candidates believe 2020 election was illegitimate Most of the Republican candidates running to represent the Orlando area in Congress do not believe that Joe Biden won the 2020 election outright. At a forum hosted at the Orlando Science Center last Thursday night, they were asked by moderators if they believed the presidential election was won legitimately. Of the 14 GOP candidates vying to represent three districts, only two said they believed Biden won the White House fairly. The two outliers were Orange County Commissioner Ted Edwards and former John Mica staffer Rusty Roberts. The candidates are running to represent Districts 7, 10 and 14, but District 7 potentials Cory Mills, Anthony Sabatini and Brady Duke did not participate in the forum. The rhetoric echoes talk from the top of the Republican party, who have won the popular vote in a presidential election just once in the last 30 years.

DeSantis files complaint against restaurant that allows children, hosts drag brunches Gov. Ron DeSantis is looking to take away the liquor license of a Miami restaurant that allows children at their weekend-morning drag shows. The governor filed a complaint against R House in Wynwood after the conservative outrage wellspring Libs of TikTok hosted a video of a drag queen walking hand-in-hand with a child during one of the brunches. The complaint was filed under laws against public nuisances in Florida. Investigations of the restaurant found that they have a children’s menu — understandable, as they are a restaurant. Still, DeSantis acted incredulous while speaking at a Tampa press conference. “We said wait a minute, having kids involved in this is wrong,” DeSantis said. “That is not consistent with our law and policy in the state of Florida and it is a disturbing trend in our society to try to sexualize these young people. That is not the way you look out for our children, you protect children, you do not expose them to things that are inappropriate.” DeSantis repeatedly mischaracterized the R House as a bar to gin up outrage that children are allowed to accompany their parents to the weekend brunch shows. “They actually had agents going to this place and effectively just gathering information, getting intelligence, seeing what’s going on,” DeSantis said. “And what they found was, not only were there minors there — and these are sexually explicit drag shows — the bar had a children’s menu. And you think to yourself, ‘Give me a break, what’s going on?’” Yes, in Ron DeSantis’ Florida we do indeed often think to ourselves, “Give me a break, what’s going on?”

Orange County Public Schools named in lawsuit against ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law Parents, students and a nonprofit organization have filed a federal lawsuit against four Florida school districts, challenging the constitutionality of a new state law that restricts “instruction” on gender identity and sexual orientation in classrooms. The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in Orlando, seeks to block the school boards in Orange, Indian River, Duval and Palm Beach counties from carrying out HB 1557, which passed during this year’s legislative session after fierce debate. Republican lawmakers titled the measure the “Parental Rights in Education” bill. Opponents labeled it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued in the 53-page complaint that the law violates First Amendment, due-process and equal-protection rights and improperly chills discussion of issues such as gender identity and sexual orientation. “Florida enacted HB 1557 to silence and erase lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people and families,” the lawsuit states. “The law is profoundly vague and requires schools to ban undefined broad categories of speech, based on undefined standards such as ‘appropriateness.’” As an example, it said the law has led the Orange County and Palm Beach County districts to remove LGBTQ-related materials from school libraries. Also, it said the Palm Beach County School Board last month adopted a policy to carry out the law. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed Monday in Orlando include Jen and Matt Cousins, the parents of four children in Orange County schools; Will Larkins, a rising senior at Orange County’s Winter Park High School who is president of the school’s Queer Student Union; David Dinan and Vik Gongidi, a married same-sex couple who have two children in Indian River County schools; and the nonprofit CenterLink, Inc., which has LGBTQ community centers in Orange, Duval and Palm Beach counties.

After serving out his prison term, Kelvin Bolton had one foot out the door when he heard a chilling sentence: ‘Hold on, you can’t go anywhere.’ photo by Octavio Jones

JAILED FOR VOTING

A government official helped 10 Florida men with felony convictions register to vote. Now they’ve been charged with fraud, and in some cases returned to lockup, because prosecutors say they voted illegally BY B IAN CA FORTIS, PR OP U BL I C A

is last night as a prisoner in North Florida, Kelvin

Bolton couldn’t sleep. Fifty-five years old, with a wispy goatee the same color as the gray flecks in his hair, he was about to get out after serving a 2 1/2-year sentence for theft and battery. The last time he’d seen his brothers and sisters at a big family gathering, he’d marched onto the dance floor ostentatiously, turned away and wrapped his arms around himself to caress his own back. As he swayed goofily to the music, everybody laughed. Now Bolton was so close to being free and seeing his family again. The next morning, a bright Wednesday in April, he was already dressed in his street clothes and cleared to go when the woman processing his paperwork stopped him. “The lady said, ‘Hold on, you can’t go anywhere,’” Bolton remembered in a recent phone call. Confused, he asked her what was going on, he recalled. There was a warrant out for his arrest for incidents in 2020, she explained gruffly. But that was impossible. He’d been in jail at the time, awaiting his prison stint. Guards loaded Bolton into a van, then drove an hour and a half south to deposit him in Alachua County Jail. There, he found out what he’d done wrong. He’d voted.

In 2018, Florida voters overwhelmingly passed Amendment

4, in a historic ballot initiative that restored the right to vote to most state residents with felony convictions. Until then, Florida had been one of only four states — the others were Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia — where people who had committed felonies needed to petition the governor to have their voting rights restored. It was a grim legacy of 19th-century laws passed after the 15th Amendment granted African American men the right to vote. Supporters applauded the law as restoring voting rights to what experts estimate is over 1 million people in Florida, about 5 percent of the population of the state. But the state’s dominant Republican lawmakers quickly installed a financial hurdle to those new rights. The following year, they passed a law to clarify that people convicted of felonies could only vote if they first paid off any money they owed for committing their crimes. The penalty for registering or voting without doing so: a felony charge for voter fraud. On the surface, the mandate seemed reasonable: Even advocates for Amendment 4 agreed that requiring paying off fines and restitution to victims was just. In Florida, however, that task proved a sometimes insurmountable challenge — one that disproportionately hit Black people. Florida has

no centralized database to allow people to figure out what legal financial obligations they owe to the state. Instead, its 67 counties and various state agencies each maintain their own databases. The state also does not track information for federal or out-of-state convictions, which people are also required to pay off before voting. On top of the fines and restitution, Florida layers on court fees that can run into the hundreds of dollars. Together, a voter’s debt can run into the thousands, a financial hole that some may never climb out of. “That’s kind of the bottom line of the absurdity of this — it’s Kafkaesque,” says Dan Smith, chair of the political science department at the University of Florida. “It’s very troubling that we would have state attorneys prosecuting individuals who did not know their status, and there was no way for them to determine their status.” Florida’s voting hurdles are part of a national pattern. For years across the country, Republican state lawmakers have been implementing new restrictive voting laws, including reducing access to vote-by-mail ballots, stricter voter identification rules and limits on early voting. These efforts have accelerated since Donald Trump promoted the false claims that Joe Biden stole the 2020 presidential election. Democrats, meanwhile, have pushed to expand voting access. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis boasted that in 2020, Florida, a swing state with a history of contentious elections, “held the smoothest, most successful election of any state in the country,” while he also signed a flurry of voting law

[ continued from page 9 ] changes that he said would further strengthen the integrity of future votes. And DeSantis has tacitly endorsed prosecuting people convicted of felonies for voter fraud. In April, he signed a bill establishing the Office of Election Crimes and Security, which will investigate alleged election violations. Despite the increased scrutiny, voting fraud remains so rare in Florida that it hasn’t come close to altering election outcomes. The Florida Department of State in 2020 received 262 election fraud complaints, just 75 of which were referred to law enforcement or prosecuting authorities, according to the agency. “Florida is an outlier, because the intentional targeting of citizens with felony convictions as a way to undermine democracy has been a throughline in that state,” says Nicole Porter, senior director of advocacy for the Sentencing Project. “And the attempt to address that, by popular vote, has been undermined by the legislature.” In 2020, a representative of the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections conducted a series of outreach efforts at the local county jail to let inmates know of their new rights and offer to help them add their names to the voter rolls. During three visits to the jail, the official helped sign up at least 10 inmates, including John Boyd Rivers, Dedrick Baldwin and Bolton. Rivers, 44, felt a visceral thrill at the prospect. Sitting in his cell in February 2020 facing a battery charge for hitting his wife, he was told by the county representative that he could register to vote. The official, he says, told him that he could disregard the check box on the form that asks whether the applicant has a felony conviction because he didn’t have a disqualifying felony. That seemed odd to Rivers, since he had a previous felony conviction. (He subsequently was sentenced for the battery charge.) No one told him anything about needing to pay off his financial obligations before registering to vote, Rivers says, and the jail didn’t give him an accounting of those debts when he was later released. Back at home, Rivers was excited when his voter registration card arrived in the mail. He’d lost his right to vote at 18, he says, after voting just once. Now he could vote in a presidential election. He and his wife went to their polling place, and he cast his vote for Donald Trump. Bolton, too, was excited to sign up. He also says no one told him he’d need to pay off his debts before casting his ballot. Although he registered as a Republican, he says he decided to vote for Biden. In all, 10 of the men who the official helped register to vote have been charged with voter fraud on the grounds they were ineligible. Their alleged illegal voting was first spotted by a citizen who analyzed Florida’s voting rolls and then shared the information with the state. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement subsequently launched an eight-month investigation, after which it identified the 10 inmates. State investigators found that some jail employees remembered the elections official giving clear directions to inmates about having to pay off financial obligations, while others did not. The investigation concluded that the jail visits were “lacking in both quality and longevity” and “showed a haphazard registration of inmates.” But the state prosecutor nevertheless proceeded with charges, although not against county officials. Officials at the Alachua Supervisor of Elections office declined to comment to ProPublica. But Supervisor of Elections Kim Barton denied any wrongdoing in a statement released in June. Brian Kramer, the state attorney for the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Florida, defended his office’s prosecutions to ProPublica, saying he believes the 10 men knew they were committing fraud. “I’m not going to say I will prosecute or not prosecute because it’s politically popular or unpopular,” he says.

Four of the 10 have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced to between 364 days and three years in prison. Bolton and three others have vowed to go to trial, while the remaining two await arraignment. They face charges that carry a penalty of up to five years in prison, five years of probation or $5,000 in fines. Eight of the men are Black, and two are white. Critics say the charges are unjust and, at a bare minimum, excessive. In nearby Lake County, the state prosecutor declined to bring charges against sex offenders who had registered to vote despite the law prohibiting voting rights restoration for those charged with sex offenses or murder. In April, two white men living in The Villages in Sumter County, an overwhelmingly white county in central Florida, pleaded guilty to each casting two ballots for Donald Trump during the 2020 election. Rather than face prosecution, they entered a pretrial intervention program, under which they must serve 50 hours of community service and attend an adult civics class, among other requirements. Because the men in Alachua County have prior felony convictions, they are ineligible for pretrial intervention and face harsher sentences. “I’m thinking I’m doing something good for the community, so that’s why I chose to try to do it,” Bolton says. “It was not malicious — I was not trying to commit a felony of voting fraud. I never would have voted.” Baldwin, 47, who is in prison on a manslaughter conviction, was sentenced to an additional 364 days. He felt “set up,” he says, since nobody told him he wasn’t eligible. “There’s no way Biden was that important to me to vote for him,” he said in an email to ProPublica from prison. “We were flat out tricked into voting.” The elections official who visited the jail denied telling the men that they could disregard the check box and said he warned them that they’d need to pay off their financial obligations, according to a person familiar with the matter who declined to be named because he feared reprisals. The elections official declined to comment to ProPublica on the record. The voter fraud charges were especially bitter for Rivers. By the time they were filed, Rivers says, he had already used part of his federal stimulus check to pay off more than $3,000 in costs related to his criminal record so he could reinstate his driver’s license and return to work. “I should have known there would be some kind of catch,” Rivers says. Florida’s history of felon disenfranchisement dates back to 1838, when the state’s first constitution prohibited people convicted of bribery or assorted “high crimes and misdemeanors” from voting. After the Civil War, faced with the prospect of formerly enslaved Black men voting, the state expanded the law so that anyone convicted of a felony lost the franchise. But in 2018, 64 percent of Florida voters approved Amendment 4, allowing people convicted of felonies, except for murder or sexual offense convictions, to vote. This embrace of new voters became more complicated the following year when the state legislature passed its law. It required that people convicted of felonies must determine their own eligibility before registering to vote. The Florida Department of Corrections and county detention facilities are required to provide notice to inmates at the time of their release of their outstanding financial obligations. But it is unclear if all of the facilities do so. Florida charges those convicted of crimes with an array of fines and fees, some of which statutorily cannot be eliminated or reduced. Defendants facing felony charges are assessed $100 to use a public defender, as well as a $100 prosecution fee. At least one person already sentenced in the Alachua County cases has been charged an additional $671 for his voting fraud charges on top of the financial obligations he already owed. Finding out what someone owes is time-consuming and expensive. An analysis led by Traci Burch, a political science

professor at Northwestern University, tried to determine the legal financial obligations owed by a random sample of 153 Florida residents convicted of felonies and found consistent information for only three of them. Counties often keep poor records, have cumbersome websites and employ unhelpful clerks. What’s more, it can cost money merely to find out how much money you owe. Four in 10 Florida counties charged either a payment or processing fee to look at their databases, and 15 percent charged a fee to access certain records, according to Burch’s research. In 2020, Smith, the Florida political scientist, estimated that just over 1 million people would be eligible to vote under Amendment 4. Of that number, about 77 percent had outstanding legal financial obligations, rendering them ineligible to vote under Florida’s new law until they paid their debts. Four out of five Floridians with felony convictions owed at least $500 in fines and fees, Smith’s analysis found. More than 59 percent owed more than $1,000. The state legislature immediately disqualified about 750,000 people from being able to vote when it passed its law requiring people convicted of felonies to pay their debts first, Smith estimated. And the new law’s impact was felt much more harshly by Black people, who faced greater fines and fees: 26 percent of white Floridians with a felony conviction would be eligible to get their voting rights restored under the new requirement, but only 18 percent of Black people, according to Smith. In May 2020, a district court judge ruled that parts of the law were unconstitutional and that the law had established a pay-to-vote system. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the ruling the following September, saying it was in the state’s power to require the payoffs and the law didn’t violate people’s rights. The state Supreme Court has also issued an advisory opinion that deemed the law legitimate. Unsurprisingly, the number of people with felony convictions who have registered to vote has fallen far short of what supporters hoped. More than 85,000 such people registered in Florida ahead of the 2020 election. Supporters of the law say that it’s only fair to have people fulfill their full sentences, including paying any crime-related debts. Some state attorneys, including Kramer, the attorney prosecuting the Alachua cases, have also developed processes within their jurisdictions by which people with felony convictions can verify their voting eligibility or request to reduce their fines and fees. Felons who have not yet registered to vote can also appeal to the state to have certain fees reduced or eliminated, says Republican State Sen. Jeff Brandes, the sponsor of the law demanding the payoffs before voting rights restoration. “We truly believe there are people who are indigent that will just simply never be able to pay,” he says. “The court only collects a fraction of what is given out anyways. And so there should be a way for the state to grant some grace or for the court to grant some grace and provide people flexibility.” Kelvin Bolton has been sitting in the Alachua Council Jail since April, waiting for his case to proceed. He’s been in and out of the system since he was 16, piling up a long record of mostly nonviolent crimes, most recently for stealing a car, groping a woman in a store and taking cigarettes from a Dollar General. He aims this time to keep a vow he made to his family and himself to stay straight. He says he is frustrated that the prosecutor subsequently created a program for people convicted of felonies to check their voting eligibility while he and the others are still facing charges. “Why would they want to keep charging us for something that they’re in the wrong for?” he says. “The state is in the wrong for what they did to us.” Do you have tips about people whose voting rights are being curtailed? SCHUMER DID POLITICS! A secret deal with Joe Manchin, passage of the semiconductor bill and the reconciliation bill, and a forced self-own for the GOP … not bad. BY JEFFREY C. BILLMAN

L

et’s not get ahead of ourselves. There are still plenty of ways for Democrats to screw this up — and Democrats being Democrats, the odds they’ll find one are not small. In any event, Kyrsten Sinema’s corporate owners have yet to render their verdict. But for now, it looks like Chuck Schumer learned how to do politics like a Republican. For once, Mitch McConnell got played for a sucker. Last Wednesday, the Senate approved a bipartisan bill to invest $52 billion into the U.S. semiconductor industry, an effort to keep pace with China. The bill had long been delayed by the Democrats’ failure to get their shit together. (Shocking, I know.) More recently, McConnell threatened to torpedo the legislation, a White House priority — though it had significant support from his caucus — if Senate Dems resurrected a “partisan reconciliation bill” that capped the price of some medications, taxed rich people, and funded health care and climate change programs. But he appeared to have nothing to worry about. Two weeks ago, for what seemed like the 43rd time in the last year, talks between Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin blew up. Manchin — who never misses a chance to thwart liberals for pundit applause — said he’d no longer support climate action because something-something inflation. So McConnell and company, calling the semiconductor bill a “national security” issue, graciously allowed the limping Biden administration to notch a much-needed win. And Schumer and Manchin promptly announced that they reached a deal for a partisan reconciliation bill that would cap the price of some medications while taxing rich people and funding health care and climate change programs. Senate Republicans were pissed. So pissed, in fact, that they filibustered legislation to expand medical care for veterans who were exposed to toxic burn pits. There are few more obvious political own goals than voting against sick vets. (Maybe a bill mandating puppy torture?) But Senate Republicans compounded their selfimmolation by opposing legislation they’d supported a month earlier — barely feigning an explanation for their change of heart.

Chuck, you’re doing amazing, sweetie! PHOTO BY LEV RADIN/SHUTTERSTOCK

And because they’re bent out of shape, Sen. Susan Collins says they might filibuster legislation to codify same-sex marriage, too. To recap, then: Because Senate Democrats out-maneuvered them to (maybe!) raise taxes on the wealthy (supported by 67% of Americans), expand health insurance subsidies (67% support), cap prescription prices (88% support) and fund clean energy programs (59% to 89% support, depending on the program), Republicans gave dying veterans the finger and might oppose marriages backed by 71% of Americans. Schumer — either a genius or the luckiest bastard on the planet — couldn’t have engineered a better trap. And he couldn’t have picked a better time to spring it. Since the Supreme Court’s reactionaries overturned the right to abortion, Democrats have been gaining in polls, sparking murmurs that maybe, just maybe, 2022 won’t be a retread of 2010 after all. And now, Democrats can deliver an elusive progressive victory — repeat after me: “the largest climate investment in the country’s history” — while Republicans get revenge by making themselves less popular than the plague. (The video of Sen. Ted Cruz fist-bumping his colleagues after killing the burn-pit bill is basically an in-kind donation to the Democratic National Committee.) Unless, of course, the new reconciliation deal falls apart. (See again: Sinema, Kyrsten.) Before everyone pops the champagne, let’s remember that the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 — the title is a masterpiece of agitprop, considering the bill will likely have little effect on inflation — is a watered-down version of the watered-down version of President Joe Biden’s domestic agenda, which initially clocked in north of $3 trillion. The infrastructure piece was split off and winnowed down into a bipartisan bill that spent $550 billion in new revenue on transportation, broadband, and utilities upgrades. The $1.7 trillion Biden wanted to invest in climate change, health care and social programs has been killed, revived, shrunk, killed and revived several times over the last year, until we ended up with the IRA.

The bill spends $433 billion on clean energy technology and expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies. It raises $739 billion by setting a corporate minimum tax, closing a loophole hedge fund managers use to avoid taxes, beefing up IRS enforcement and giving Medicare authority to negotiate the prices of 10 drugs. That spending number is, of course, a fourth of Biden’s original pitch. It’s also $1 trillion less than the deal Manchin and Schumer agreed to a year ago, when Manchin was fretting about people snorting their child tax credits. And the climate investment is almost $200 billion less than earlier iterations of the reconciliation package envisioned. But it’s something. And for a struggling White House, something is better than nothing. The bill promises to cut U.S. carbon emissions 40% by 2030 — Biden previously pledged to cut emissions by half by the decade’s end — largely through incentives to increase the use of electric vehicles and solar panels. But as Manchin explained, the legislation will not remove “dependable and affordable fossil fuel energy before new technologies are ready to reliably carry the load.” Which is to say, we’re in no hurry to get rid of oil or coal or natural gas. Hope you like heatwaves! Noticeably absent from the bill is the Clean Electricity Performance Program, which would have slashed carbon emissions by penalizing energy companies that failed to meet targets. Instead, Manchin’s legislation will require the government to permit new oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska. Democratic leaders also promised to make it easier for developers to build pipelines and other energy infrastructure without interference from pesky environmentalists. So while this would be the most significant climate investment in U.S. history, that’s less a cause for celebration than a comment on decades of denial and apathy. A burning planet will require more. For now, though, Democrats can take the W. Assuming Kyrsten Sinema lets them.

New Generation Theatrical’s ‘Gothic Manor’ was a truly immersive experience, reaching not only patrons’ eyes and ears but even their taste buds

One Night

only! August 26

In recent years, “immersive” has

become the most overworked buzzword in entertainment, being applied to everything from theme park rides and virtual reality games to museum exhibits and cinema screenings. But while most self-proclaimed immersive attractions are content with only stimulating two or three of the senses, New Generation Theatrical is literally going for the throat with productions that creatively pique patrons’ taste buds, as well as their eyes and ears. I missed out on their sold-out staging of Sweeney Todd, which featured a pre-show meal of meat pies, so I was hungry to attend last weekend’s world premiere of Gothic Manor, an original horror-comedy by Michael Knight that muddles together audience participation and alcoholic cocktails into a uniquely intoxicating experience. The Duke (Gregg Baker) and his newly beloved Baroness (Hannah McGinley LeMasters) welcome you to their generically named palatial estate, where — with the aid of their ghoulish butler, Brennan (Brandon Roberts), and undermining minions (Megan Borkes, Josh Melendez) — they plan to unleash an ancient demon for totally altruistic non-evil reasons. Don’t worry about the destruction of your eternal soul; just sit back, sip your drink — a red wine, followed by a mad scientist-style self-mixed gin & tonic, then a climactic rum punch shooter — while enjoying Knight’s smartly stupid script, which spoofs Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride and the Amnesia video games along with a campy helping of Rocky Horror. “I’m just so ecstatic,” Knight told me the afternoon after Gothic Manor’s opening night, which was attended by an enthusiastic crowd including numerous industry members. “The audience reception was just more than I could have wanted, and people have been really, really supportive.” Active in the Orlando arts and attractions scene since 2012, Knight is known for writing and directing Orlando Fringe Festival hits like Anne Frankenstein and Zombie

Island (or How To Survive a Wedding With Your Ex). He’s collaborated with New Generation Theatrical (previously Generation Productions) on a half-dozen shows since 2017, including participating in their 2019 Be Original festival and directing Neil LaBute’s Reasons to Be Pretty in May (“Live Active Cultures: New Generation charges into an ambitious 2022-2023 season,” May 4). Knight credits a Chicago spoof of The Little Mermaid that he attended in September 2021 with inspiring the show’s cocktail-centric structure, which he says found a perfect parallel in his friendship with New Generation producer Aaron Safer. “Aaron and I are big whiskey fiends,” says Knight. “We love to go out, we love trying different drinks; it’s kind of like in the DNA of our relationship, and when we were discussing this company, we wanted people to feel like they’re enjoying a night out. “We’ve not only created a show, but we’ve created an experience.” In addition to the trio of tipples included in the must-do “immersive ticket” upgrade (“We don’t want to overdo it or underdo it,” explains Knight, who thinks “three is the right amount for people to have a solid evening”), Gothic Manor also satisfied with atmospheric audio and lighting effects designed by Knight and venue technician Michael Citrinite, as well as slapstick fight choreography by Cody Stone. However, it’s the stellar cast’s pitch-perfect perfor-

mances — especially the razor-sharp banter between the back-talking Borkes and slowburning Roberts — that really gives this spookhouse satire its spirit. If you missed Gothic Manor’s one-weekend run at the Orlando Repertory Theatre, you might yet be in luck, because Knight says there has already been interest from other local venues in remounting the show. “We know that this thing has legs, and it can change and can be adapted for multiple different spaces,” says Knight. He adds, “I personally would love to make it a yearly thing. … Maybe it’s a different theme, but similar to this format.” Until a return to Gothic Manor is announced, New Generation is preparing for their Heathers: The Musical benefit concert in August, and Patrick Marber’s Closer at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center in September. Knight himself sounds most excited about Wingman, the upcoming world premiere by Lakeland playwright Gretchen Suarez-Pena. “It’s an original show, and that’s something that we’re really proud of,” says Knight. “We are such an eclectic arts community with so many great creatives, and we’re really trying to push the fact that a lot of our season is original shows. We are literally building these scripts from the ground up. … People love to go see [original shows at] the Fringe, and we just believe, ‘why can’t we do that all the time?’”

The long wait really is worth it. When it comes to the better pizza joints in town — Pizza Bruno, Piazza Italia, Prato, F&D, Antica, Antonella’s, you name it — trust me when I say that SoDough Square’s pies have the edge.

ENTER THE DRAGON

umor,” in the words of Mark Twain, “must not professedly teach, it must not professedly preach; but it must do both if it would live forever. By forever, I mean 30 years.” Now more than ever, these words are applicable to the 1987 Orlando-based (title of the film notwithstanding) action film Miami Connection. ‘Miami Connection’: the apex of Orlando cinema | Photo courtesy the American Genre Film Archive Whether or not the film’s humor was intentional is irrelWas Miami Connection’s phoenix-style rebirth accidental? evant — what does matter is that this film, more popular than sesh, or where exactly on Church Street that Dragon Sound ever, has entered the exclusive realm of Forever. [ film + tv ] of course Darth Vader wore a tropical-print tank top. These minifigs are canon, dammit! (Disney+) Luck — This animated comedy about a woman with terrible luck got dropped by Paramount when handsy ex-Pixar head John Lasseter came aboard as producer. But to be fair, who else knows more about women with terrible luck? (Apple TV+) The Outlaws — Straight from the U.K. comes Season 2 of the crime comedy about seven strangers who are brought together to perform community service, whereupon they fall into possession of a bag full of money. Given that one of them is Christopher Walken, the other six should probably just be grateful it isn’t a watch. PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Clusterf*k: Woodstock ’99 — A three-episode docuseries details the violence and chaos that ensued when the organizers of the now-infamous anniversary concert made the fatal mistake of booking Limp Bizkit — not realizing they’d actually show up! (Netflix) Reservation Dogs — Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo’s hit comedy about life as an Indigenous American returns to rack up further accolades for advancing the cause of representation. To that end, new additions to the cast for Season 2 include … Marc Maron and Megan Mullally. Hmm, sounds like somebody listed “Did I mention I’m one-eighth Cherokee?” under “Special Skills.” (Hulu)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: All or Nothing: Arsenal — The third iteration of the U.K. football-documentary series follows the Islington team on their quest to return to the top. Kind of surprising they ever left, given that they’ve had the lifelong support of John Lydon’s entire family. And you know that bunch are a regular rabbit’s foot! (Amazon Prime) Beavis and Butthead — Hot on the heels of their recent comeback feature — in which they, like, Did the Universe or something — everybody’s favorite suburban morons are starring in their first series of original

episodes in 11 years. It’s probably just as well they missed that run of months in 2020 when you couldn’t get teepee for your bunghole. (Paramount+) Kakegurui Twin — This anime prequel depicts Mary Saotome’s first year at Hyakkou Private Academy, where students are ranked based on their gambling winnings. You know, just like they do in major-league baseball. (Netflix) Lady Tamara — Her new reality series pulls back the curtain on the fabulous life of Tamara Falcó, a Spanish aristocrat and socialite. Gonna tell my kids this is how we used to say “unemployed.” (Netflix) Super Giant Robot Brothers — Mark Andrews (an Oscar winner for Pixar’s Brave) directs a futuristic series about robot siblings who have to stop bickering long enough to fend off an alien invasion. Just what we all needed: robots who rock ’em, sock ’em and then argue bitterly over Mom’s will. (Netflix) Sweet Life: Los Angeles — Just two weeks after the premiere of her comedy series Rap Sh!t, Issa Rae continues her friendlybut-total takeover of HBO Max with a second season of her reality show about successful Black 20-somethings in South L.A. Now all she needs is to found a clothing brand that can later be found guilty of discriminatory hiring and ties to a Latin American drug cartel, and she’ll basically

Give yourself a point if you answered “They actually fall in love.” But you’ve been watching too much truecrime stuff if your first guess was “They find her severed head in the trunk of a Prius just outside San Bernardino.” (Netflix) What Josiah Saw — Robert Patrick — yes, the T-1000 himself — plays a family patriarch who summons his children to his farmhouse in hopes of breaking a decadesold curse. Personally, I wouldn’t be going unless he could tell me the name of the family dog. Because y’all remember how he tried that crap before. (Shudder)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: Carter — South Korea sends us a sci-fi thriller about an amnesiac who’s on a mission to save the world, spurred on by a voice in his head and equipped with a bomb in his mouth. Wow, they really thought Herschel Walker was the right man for the job? (Netflix) LEGO Star Wars: Summer Vacation — In the third seasonal special starring the only Jedi who are capable of getting caught between your toes, the Star Wars gang hits the beach for some fun, sun and to reminiscence about dog days past. Right, like what’s he going to threaten us with this at this point? We already know Herschel Walker’s going to be the president. (Netflix) The Sandman — The good news: Neil Gaiman was actively involved in the development of his seminal comic as a live-action streaming series. The bad news: So was David S. Goyer. That’s like allowing Ernest Hemingway to write his own screenplay for The Sun Also Rises as long as he brings along Uwe Boll to keep him out of trouble. (Netflix) The Snoopy Show — Season 2 continues with seven more episodes starring everyone’s favorite beagle. Remember, if Charlie Brown can’t remember that dog’s name, the kid is definitely a T-1000. (Apple TV+) They/Them — Kevin Bacon stars in a Blumhouse slasher flick about a deranged killer who stalks the kids at a gay conversion camp. Can I just say that I am in love with this premise? I’d add that I’m equally enamored with the way that title juxtaposes pronoun-phobia and old-school horror nomenclature — but I’m worried Steve Doocy might agree, for all the wrong reasons. (Peacock)

MS. MEKA NISM RE-EMERGES

Orlando singer, mover and mystic Ms. Meka Nism has been relatively quiet on the scene lately. However, all is not what it seems, and that’s about to change this week. First and foremost, Meka was recently elected president of the Florida chapter of the Recording Academy. It’s news as big as it is historical, because she’s only the fourth woman, and the first Orlandoan ever, to hold the major position in the Florida chapter’s nearly 27-year history. This could mean some good things for Central Florida music since she tells me she wants to get Orlando’s best eligible for Recording Academy membership and Grammy submissions. The other notable Ms. Meka Nism news is that she’ll be doing her first local show in a couple of years on Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Alley in Sanford (7 p.m., no cover). It’s a video release party for her latest single, “The Day Fell.” Even through all her aggressive power-metal stylings, I’ve always thought of Meka as a heavy-metal Kate Bush. Well, this gorgeous 2021 single proves that I still got it, baby, because the ethereal song is one of the best pure showcases of her voice to date and now has a proper video to go with it. The multi-part show will feature three distinct sets: a solo acoustic set, a group set and a jammy, bluesy, witchy cabaret set to tease this fall’s Central Florida Witches Ball. And as if the reasons to celebrate weren’t already enough, the event will also be Meka’s birthday celebration. Go toast her for all of it.

by Dylan Houser + Black Wick is it. The extended 18-track album V s L E N C I s, PART III pairs two luminaries of Central Florida’s outer-limits music frontier. Dylan Houser is a noted noise scene figure, and Joshua Rogers, the mind behind Black Wick, is also the boss of the Illuminated Paths label, one of the leading purveyors of vaporwave. This collab between the two experimental giants is a textbook odyssey that epitomizes the 1980s fantasia of vaporwave in all its leftfield allure. Houser crafted the tracks and Black Wick completed the aesthetic through hours of hand manipulation and layering through vintage cassette stock. The result is the beau idéal of vaporwave. LOCAL RELEASES Bathed luxuriously in soft retro synths and Oh, you don’t know what vaporwave is? You’re not alone. But if ever there were a filtered through lo-fi ether, these songs hover good primer on the niche genre, the new joint in the consciousness, warm and warped, like

a neon mirage. Even amid all that ambience, though, this album is one of the more melodically memorable vaporwave collections out there, a quality not always guaranteed in this genre. V s L E N C I s, PART III is available digitally or on super-limited-edition cassette through Illuminated Paths’ Bandcamp.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK If you go out, be safe, be cool.

Ceremony, Hotline TNT, Romeo Blu, Body Shop: Few bands in the indie world have been as notably defiant of genre as shapeshifting punk refugees Ceremony. This impressively eclectic bill honors that spirit. Hotline TNT are exciting fuzz-rockers from Minneapolis. Romeo Blu is the solo synth project by Carson Cox, frontman of Merchandise, the Tampa band that broke out to 4AD fame. And Body Shop are a stylish all-star local act specializing in arty and primitive punk moods. Together, they’ll all make for one dynamic evening. (7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, Henao Contemporary Center, $16) Elder, Ruby the Hatchet, Dreadnought: The bar can get you drunk but the bands on this bill will get you high as fuuuck. Massachusetts band Elder deal in heavy prog expeditions that don’t even need visuals to whisk your consciousness away on an epic voyage. Those eyelids will remain heavy the whole night long with the 1970s-worshipping brew of doom and psych from New Jersey’s Ruby the Hatchet and the proggy doom metal of Denver’s Dreadnought. Pass the Doritos, dude. (8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, Will’s Pub, $20) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Buddy Guy & John Hiatt American music legends John Hiatt and Buddy Guy are out on a summer co-headlining blues-rock summit, and they’re heading our way this week. Bluesguitar maestro Guy and lauded, rootsy singer-songwriter Hiatt separately are big enough news, but together make for an intriguing night of legendarily gritty sounds. The twosome might come from nominally different musical worlds, but each packs a heavy catalog of songwriting hits; you’ll have plenty of those “he wrote that?!” moments. Sidebar for the big-time blues fans: Hiatt will be playing alongside the Goners — featuring slide-guitarist Sonny Landreth (who also takes a brief solo turn — for his set. Thumbing through some reviews, word is that the 85-year-old Guy is killing it, utterly undiminished by age (at one point using a drum stick as a guitar pick for extra fire) — so don’t miss this musical marvel or you’ll have some actual, non-musical blues. 8 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. If you’ve ever wondered how synth-pop group the Midnight will weather the inevitable apocalyptic electromagnetic pulse that scuppers all our precious electronics, wonder no further. Midnight vocalist Tyler Lyle is coming to town as part of a Southern solo tour showing a very different side of his muse than the future-forward synthetics of the Midnight. He’ll be performing an unplugged singer-songwriter set, with the spotlight squarely on his gorgeous swoon of a voice. Expect Midnight favorites stripped to the very bone, material workshopped from a shadowy new solo endeavor dubbed the Transcendentalist, and maybe even a number or two from upcoming the Midnight album Heroes, due out in September. Mike Dunn and C.B. Carlyle open, which is a bill unto itself, we’d vouchsafe. 8 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $15. — MM

THURSDAY, AUG. 4

‘The Sound of Music’ and the War in Ukraine The “hills” of Orlando will once again be alive with songs from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, but this time with a modern topical twist. (War is indeed an evergreen theme.) This program will pair selections from Sound, performed by singers from Central Florida Vocal Arts, with discussion of the current conflict in Ukraine viewed through the historical lens of Sound’s plot. The story of the Von Trapps (and, of course, Maria) fleeing their Austrian home, as the Nazis annex the country wholesale in the late 1930s, would ring all too familiar to current Ukrainian refugees forced to flee their homes amidst a Russian invasion. Expect some heavy discussions and some bleak truths about the human condition, along with music that uplifts — often in spite of itself. 7 p.m., Winter Park Library and Events Center, 1052 W. Morse Blvd., Winter Park, winterparklibrary.org, free. — Patricia Tolley FRIDAY, AUG. 5

Bad Bunny

Get ready to drink deeply of your “Moscow Mules” because reggaeton icon Bad Bunny is back in Orlando for the second time this year, and everything about this “World’s Hottest Tour” return date is bigger and arguably better. It’s been quite a year for the Puerto Rican singer since releasing his record-breaking album Un Verano Sin Ti: El Conejo Malo just crushed the previous record for the most Spotify streams in one month, placing him at No. 7 worldwide among Spotify’s global artists; former president Barack Obama just shared his summer playlist, and Bad Bunny’s “Ojitos Lindos” was part of that list of Executive Branch bangers; and BB’s TikTok supremacy continued, with a recent video of him singing the theme to Mexican telenovela Rebelde in a cowboy hat going instantly viral. Last time Bad Bunny was in Orlando he played an arena, this time he’s going straight to the top with a stadium show, and by the time you read this it will be more than likely sold out. And yet, titi me pregunto if I’m going … you

Florida Underground Fest 3 After a bit of a rain delay in the form of a global pandemic, the Florida Underground Fest returns for a third year, bringing together bands from throughout Central Florida and the entire state for a two-day musical blowout. The fest will take over a good portion of the Mills Avenue musical strip with Will’s Pub, Will’s Dirty Laundry, Grumpy’s Underground Lounge and Uncle Lou’s all conscripted into active duty. And they’ll need that sheer number of stages because nearly 60 bands will be getting young, loud and snotty in rapid succession. The lineup includes Wet Nurse, Caustic Bats, Flag on Fire, Coffee Project, Outtatime, You Vandal, Pangolin, Call In Dead, Control This, Obsidian, Flag Man, 430 Steps and a whole lot more worthies. Get there early because there’s not much in the way of musical filler, and stay hydrated because this one will be intimate. Various locations, floridaundergroundfest.com, $15$30. — MM

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the coming weeks, Leo, I urge you to always be confident that YOU ARE THE PARTY! Everywhere you go, bring the spirits of fun and revelry. Be educationally entertaining and entertainingly educational. Amuse yourself by making life more interesting for everyone. At the same time, be kind and humble, never arrogant or insensitive. A vital part of your assignment is to nourish and inspire others with your radiance and charm. That formula will ensure you get everything you need. I foresee bounty flowing your way! P.S.: Regularly reward your admirers and followers with your magnanimous Cheshire-cat grin. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In my Astrological Book of Life, here’s what I have inscribed about Virgos: You may not always find the perfect solution, but you are skilled at finding the best solution available. This will be an especially valuable knack in the coming weeks, both for yourself and others. I trust you will scan for practical but compassionate answers, even if they are partial. And I hope you will address at least some of everyone’s needs, even if no one is completely satisfied. You can be the master of creative compromise that we all need. Thanks in advance for your excellent service! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Everyone knows that “balance” is a keyword for you Librans. However, there are many interpretations of what balance entails. Here’s how I define it for you during the coming weeks: No. 1, an openness to consider several different ways to capitalize on an opportunity, but to ultimately choose just one way; No. 2, the ability to see and understand all sides of every story, while also knowing that for pragmatism’s sake you must endorse a single version of the story; No. 3, the capacity to be both constructively critical and supportively sympathetic; No. 4, the facility to be welcoming and inviting while still maintaining healthy boundaries. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Life is enchanting for me because I have so much control over what I think,” my Scorpio friend Daria told me. “If I decide to flatter myself with comments about how attractive I am, I can do just that. If I would like to imagine a good fairy visiting me while I sleep and giving me a dream of having an orgasm with my lover while we fly over the Serengeti Plains, I can.” I asked her about the times when worries gush forth unbidden from her subconscious mind and disturb her joy. She said, “I simply picture myself shoving those worries in a hole in the ground and blowing them up with an exploding rose.” I bring Daria’s mind-management expertise to your attention, Scorpio, because the

coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to raise your mastery over what you think. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): People might impatiently advise you to relax and settle down. Others might tell you to stop dreaming such big visions and formulating such adventurous plans. Still others might give you the side-eye because they imagine you are having too much fun and brainstorming too wildly and laughing too loudly. If you receive messages like those, give the complainers a copy of this horoscope. It will tell them that YOU WILL NOT COMPLY WITH ANY INHIBITING DIRECTIVES. Your astrologer, me, authorizes you to be as vast and venturesome and enterprising and spontaneous as you dare. In doing so, I am speaking on behalf of the cosmic rhythms. Your plucky audacity has been heavenly ordained. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In accordance with astrological omens, I hereby authorize you to worry, worry, and worry some more. Stew and simmer and ferment as you weigh all the options and mull the correct actions. But when the time is right, end your fretting with crisp decisiveness. Shake off any residual doubt that still clings to you. And then undertake robust action to transform the situation that provoked your righteous brooding. In my astrological opinion, what I have just described is your best plan for success in the coming days. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “I was looking for a love unlike my parents’ love or my sister’s love or the love on a foreign kitchen floor,” writes Rebecca Dinerstein Knight in her novel The Sunlit Night. “I wanted to forgive my mother and father for their misery and find myself a light man who lived buoyantly and to be both his light and his dark.” I offer you her thoughts, Aquarius, in the hope of inspiring you to expand and deepen your ideas about the love you want. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to revise and reinvigorate your definitions of intimacy and togetherness. You will have extra power to see new truths about how best to create maximum synergy and symbiosis. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Even raw and messy emotions can be understood as a form of light, crackling and bursting with energy,” writes Jungian psychoanalyst Clarissa Pinkola Estés. For example, “We can use the light of rage in a positive way, in order to see into places we cannot usually see.” Likewise, confusion might be a healthy sign that a longheld misunderstanding is dissolving. Disappointment may herald the demise of

an unrealistic expectation. So let’s unleash a big cheer for raw and messy emotions, Pisces! I suspect they will soon be your gateway to clarity and renewal. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries poet Ada Limón advises us to notice and love “the music of the world.” She says that praising and giving attention to the good things “are as important and necessary as witnessing and naming and holding the grief and sorrow that comes with being alive.” This is always a crucial principle to keep in mind, but it will be extra essential for you in the coming weeks. Your ability to attract the influences and resources you need most will thrive if you focus on and celebrate the music of the world. P.S.: I encourage you to sing more than usual, too. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Here’s my hope for you in the coming months: You will cultivate a specialty for connecting people and situations that need to be affiliated but aren’t yet. You will regard your flair for blending as a gift you offer generously. Can you picture yourself doing that? I think it will be fun and will also benefit you in unexpected ways. So here’s my proposed plan: Conspire to heal fragmentation and schisms. Unite heavenly and earthly things. Keep the far side and the near side in touch with each other. Never let the past forget about the future, and vice versa. One more thing, Taurus: Be gleefully imaginative as you mix and conjoin and combine. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In a play by Gemini philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, a character says, “Hell is other people.” What did he mean by that? One interpretation is that our fellow humans always judge us, and their judgments rarely align with who we really are and who we imagine ourselves to be. Here’s my solution for that problem: Choose allies and companions whose views of you match your own. Is that so hard? I suspect it will be easier than usual for you in the coming months, Gemini. Take advantage of life’s natural tendency to connect you with cohorts who appreciate you. Be picky as you avoid the hell of other people. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The people most likely to succeed as entrepreneurs are those with a high degree of analytical intelligence. Right? Well, it’s more complicated than that. Reasoning ability and problem-solving skills are key skills, but not as important as emotional intelligence: the power to understand and manage feelings. I mention this, Cancerian, because the coming months will be a favorable time to advance your ambitions by enhancing and expressing your emotional intelligence. orlandoweekly.com

Q: A friend hooked me up with a much younger guy. Let’s call him “Pretty Boy.” He’s a burner, like our mutual. Consent is supposed to be a core burner value and before we hook up, Pretty Boy asks if he can bring his paddles. So, we had a talk and I tell him I’m open to a little pain, but I’m mostly meh about it. Long story short: Pretty Boy thinks he’s a great fuck cuz he’s got a great big one and can pound long and hard. My pussy ain’t been touched in almost three years but so far as I know “OUCH” is the universal safe word! Maybe I should’ve picked a better one because I had to say it so many times! I figured it was heat of the moment stuff, so I wasn’t mad, and agreed to hook up again. Much more OUCH, but on both sides this time. (Love bites!) Next day I find a thing called an Ohnut and I tell Pretty Boy I’m willing to plunk down the money. Whatever it takes to make his PIV pounding less OUCH. And then we have this conversation: Sore Lady: “So, surely this has happened before, yes?” Pretty Boy: “Of course it has. LOL.” Now I’m mad. This motherfucker knew! He did it on purpose! I ask him point-blank if he got off on it and he won’t answer. Which means he did. Now I want to set him on fire. But here’s the thing: Pretty Boy is the finest thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of putting my hands on in my entire life. I should probably slam the door and lock it, but he is the finest thing! And I’ve never had a hookup that wasn’t a little bit sketchy. But this is too much, right? RIGHT? (P.S. I didn’t even cum either time!) Boys Are Supposed To Ask, Right, Dan? A: So, Pretty Boy doesn’t care if you come or not, he ignores your feedback during sex and he engages in rough sex knowing it’s sometimes painful — in a bad way — for his sex partners. Fuck that guy. By which I mean, of course, don’t fuck that guy. But you’re obviously tempted to fuck that guy again, BASTARD, as you make clear in your letter. You wanna fuck Pretty Boy again because he’s the “finest thing” you’ve ever gotten to touch. Pretty Boy is so hot that you’re tempted to fuck him despite wanting to set him on fire — in a bad way — after you spoke to him about the sex being painful. Look, having a hot FWB is great, but having a hot FWB who’s a shitty, selfish, inconsiderate lover is a lot like owning a house with an amazing view that happens to be right next door to a trash incinerator. Sooner or later you get used to the view and start taking it for granted,

and the only thing you really notice after that is the stench. Still, if you’re inclined to extend Pretty Boy the benefit of the doubt, it wouldn’t be hard to whip one up. He’s young! It’s entirely possible all the women he’s fucked up to this point in his short life liked his style, i.e., long and hard pounding! It’s also possible the woman he’s fucked hated his style and, like you, hoped Pretty Boy would hear “OUCH,” stop, solicit their feedback and correct course. Seeing that’s not something he’s either able or inclined to do, you’re gonna have to use your words to get him to fuck you without physically hurting you. If he wants back in your pussy, tell him he has do it/things/you differently. More foreplay, going slower, using lube, not going all the way in (with or without an Ohnut) — whatever he needs to do to make sex more comfortable and pleasurable for you, that needs to be a clearly stated (by you!) and enforced (ditto!) condition of him getting anywhere near your pussy ever again. And if he laughs it off, BASTARD, set him on fire. (P.S. What happened to the paddles?) Q: I’m a cis woman in a relationship with a cis man for eight years. The sex is fantastic, mostly because we prioritize connection, play and pleasure rather than penetration or orgasms, though we have plenty of both. My partner lasts a long time and only comes about a third of the time. About half the time we do PIV he outlasts both my own orgasm and the lube, meaning that I’ll stop things when the friction becomes painful and he’ll either finish outside of me or won’t come at all. These options work for us and the sex is consistently great! The dilemma is that we’ve decided to start trying to conceive, which requires him to come inside me. I’m worried that the emphasis on this one act will put so much pressure on him that sex will become less fun. I’m also worried it will make ejaculation even more difficult. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this more playful? Maybe a suggestion on how to get the lube to last longer? Is there a way to eroticize the whole process more? Or is subpar sex just an inevitable part of trying to conceive? Conception Really Impeding My Pleasures A: Subpar sex while you’re trying to conceive kinda sorta comes with the territory, CRIMP, and it may be the least of your worries … Go to Savage.Love to read the rest, and write to Dan at questions@savagelove.net.
