¶ Gov. DeSantis proposes criminalizing protest I applaud Gov. DeSantis for this bold move to protect Florida and its residents. I support him 100 percent on this issue. For the activists and Democrats to cry foul about their 1A rights is absurd. Violent protest is not protected by the 1A no matter your race. The governor said nothing about disallowing peaceful protests. We have all had enough of the violence and cry baby tactics of the Democrats and their thugs. This proposal is spot on. – Joseph Yagar, Tampa So a teacher, county employee or state worker goes to a simple demonstration, and that event becomes violent, by no action of the person, then they risk losing their employment and/or benefits? That seems a bit of an overreach in light of the 1st Amendment of Free Speech and right to Lawful Assembly. – Chris Simmons, Cocoa Beach

right-wing choice to replace RBG, we’d still be stuck with that shitty right-wing appointee on the court for life. Go to hell, Marco! Your savior Trump will be there to insult and demean you. – Joseph Brock, Winter Park Marco Rubio: Trump supporter and votes for Supreme Court Judge. Seems like he is part of the Trump/GOP conspiracy to turn this country into a dictatorship. Trump said quite clearly that he would not guarantee a smooth transition if he loses … he lied about the virus, now this … and little Marco dances to his tune. – Gerald Chernicoff, West Palm Beach Marco Rubio just proved he is an unprincipled liar who will use any convenient excuse to retain power for him and his Republican cohorts no matter how odious the explanation, or how inconsistent with his previous “cherished principles.” – Michael Gilbrook, Orlando

¶ Marco Rubio: dance, little puppet, dance

¶ DeSantis lifts mask requirements for Florida’s restaurants

Rubio’s logic is absurd, as usual. How does the fact that Trump is running for reelection justify the Senate considering Trump’s appointee before the election? If the American people vote Trump out in November, in part because we hate his shitty

Thank you, Gov. DeSantis! I won’t be spending my winter in Florida for the first time in 18 years. Haven’t you heard of science to decide how to keep people safe? You can’t spend money in Florida if you’re dead. – Lynn Nelson, Bradenton

FALL GUIDE 2020 STILL STANDING!

2020

has been a rough year, but we’re still here. (There are three months yet to go, though – so buckle up.) As far as our annual fall events guide is concerned, we are shocked/happy/bemused to find that there is a TON of stuff happening in this city in the next six weeks. Museums, theaters, Halloween haunts, pumpkin patches … they all seem to be open for business. Many of them are doing business differently, though. A lot are virtual; many of those that are in-person require reservations for specific times in order to keep customers safe. A major disclaimer – and we shouldn’t have to say this, but: In the weeks and days leading up to our press deadline, organizations were still making tough decisions about whether to move forward with planned events or not. It’s a given that some of the events we list here may be postponed or canceled, so PLEASE check before making plans. As Camper Van Beethoven said in one of our favorite harvestseason songs, “Everything seems to be up in the air at this time.” Time for free fall!

In the third iteration of the Mennello’s Construct: Our Orlando group show, curators pulled up two locals: Don Rimx and art collective Lemon Press. Don Rimx, known for large-scale murals celebrating Afro-Caribbean and Puerto Rican culture, brought his maximalist, multi-layered approach to portraiture for this show, with symbols, color and motifs inspired by the convergence of African Diasporic religions and Catholicism. Lemon Press (Anna Cruz and Adam Lavigne) combine painting, cartooning and installation to address time and memory – something we are all wrestling with in this bizarre locked-down pandemic year – recording 2020’s loss and potential through a visual and graphic fictional language, inspired by hieroglyphs and other ancient systems of communication. $5. The audience follows a group of eight “young bohemians” on a jaunt through downtown as the story unfolds around them. LE HOUSE VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT 595 W. Church St. 407-530-7024 facebook.com/lehouserestaurant $$

PHOTOS BY ROB BARTLETT

HOME COOKING Le House Vietnamese Restaurant in Parramore offers a focused menu of familial fare BY FAIYAZ KARA

N

ot only do they offer a formica-free dining experience, Le House shuns the Vietnamese restaurant tradition of presenting guests with those multipage menus we’ve grown accustomed to in favor of one so focused that I lost sight (and sound) of the Vietnamese couple joining me at this quaint Parramore eatery. “Hmm? What was that?” “I said it feels like they’ve brought the outside in,” said my dining comrade, referring to the lanterns and string lights illuminating Le House’s dining room. I hadn’t noticed, but he was right. This was patio dining without the annoyance of bugs and sirens and coronavirus-saturated breezes. About that tight menu, owner Huon Le says it features the sort of food he ate growing up – dishes like the outstanding nem rolls ($5) comprising pork patties, veggies and crisp-crackly eggroll wrapper snugly stuffed inside a rice paper roll. They’re served with nem nuong, an orange dipping sauce equal parts sweet, garlicky and fishy that we agreed could’ve been more boldly flavored. The summer rolls with shrimp ($4.50) had all the flavors, but my other

guest – a chef specializing in Vietnamese cuisine – was quick to point out that the fillings weren’t as tightly packed as they could’ve been. One bite and the fillings shot out of the roll like edible confetti. No such clucking with the chicken wings ($8 for five) – these are given a delicate fry before being slicked with a sweet chili-garlic fish sauce. It’s all wonderfully balanced, and balance is also a state attained in the pho Saigon ($10) with its meaty trinity of round-eye steak, brisket and meatballs. The broth veered, ever so slightly, into sweet territory, while the noodles comprised just the right amount of chew. Fresh herbs and veggies were as lovely as the plating and presentation, which showed in a pork chop rice plate ($11) as well: The timbale of jasmine rice; perfectly round garnishes of fried egg, cucumber and tomato; the round bowl of dipping sauce – it all made for scrummy eye candy. The pork chop was darkened

in a marinade of soy and sugar prior to being grilled, as is the pork and sirloin beef (should you opt for those proteins). I had some issue with the thicker portions of the pork being undercooked and the beef being a bit gristly. A plate of veggie stir-fry noodles ($11) looked gorgeous, and the textures were spot on. The sauce in which it was all tossed was a bit too sweet for our liking, however. What was to everyone’s liking was the duck bean curd noodle soup ($17), a specialty dish whose fiery broth is reddened further by annatto seed oil. Potatoes, carrots, cabbage, tofu and rice noodles lent a supporting role to the tender duck quarter, but this is one of those soups that fall into the “must slurp when sick as a dog” category. And like most everything else we had, it looked real pretty too. At this point, I looked at the time and it was well past closing. I had my eye on the Vietnamese flan ($4) the moment I perused the menu on entering, so I asked if it was still OK to order it and, within a few minutes, I was devouring it from a cocktail glass poured over with iced Vietnamese coffee. I’m grateful they obliged as it’s precisely the ending I wanted (though didn’t necessarily need). Then again, at a place called Le House, I suppose I shouldn’t be all too surprised that they’d be … well … accommodating. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

THE AARDVARK

There’s a gastropub inside this neighborhood bottle shop in SoDo that serves some of the finest “gulf to grill” and “grove to stove” fare in the city. Chef Hugh Holland is the maestro behind such refined creations as gator jambalaya, speckled trout atop Florida fried rice, and crawfish gnocchi tossed in a subtly sweet “tornado” sauce fashioned from serranos, jalapeños and molasses. More than 200 beers are also offered. Open daily. (reviewed Sept. 23) 2610 S. Ferncreek Ave., 407-894-9999, theaardvarkfl.com, $$$

HENRY’S DEPOT

Situated in a 140-year-old building, this Sanford food hall named after railroad tycoon Henry Plant is anchored by a gorgeous Art Nouveau-meets-Florida Cracker cocktail bar, but there are some above-average eats to be had here as well: fresh seafood at the Current Seafood Counter; vegan vittles from Dixie Dharma; oak-fired pizzas with Southern roots from Oak Flame; and primo sandwiches from Salvatore’s. The Greenery Creamery offers dairy and vegan ice cream, while Mahogany Coffee pours some of the best coffee in Sanford. Look for What the Chuck, a craft burger joint by Tennessee Truffle’s Nat Russell, to open soon. (reviewed Sept. 16) 212 W. First St., Sanford, 407-548-6931, henrysdepot.com, $$

MASON JAR PROVISIONS Neighborhood eatery serves a bevy of bar bites and substantial handhelds with a Southern bent. Porky boudin balls, bourbon-glazed pecans and not-so-jerky beef jerky pair well with brews, while fried bologna sandwiches, barbecuebraised rib hoagies and burgers make ideal takeout options. To-go cocktails are provided by Burton’s Bar next door. Open daily from 4-10 p.m. (reviewed Sept. 9) 805 E. Washington St., 407-270-4322, masonjarprovisionsorlando.com, $$

BOVINE STEAKHOUSE

Park Avenue gets its own high-end chophouse, in the former (completely renovated) Park Plaza Gardens space. Steaks are procured from Linz Heritage Angus from Chicago, which complements BoVine’s brick walls, brown hues and big-shouldered aesthetics. The 30-day CONTINUED ON PAGE 41

dry-aged ribeye is a charred wonder, and the lamb rack seared with an anchovy-herb crust will draw order envy. Classic apps like shrimp cocktail with nose-flaring cocktail sauce and a prime tartare make worthy preludes. Open daily. (reviewed Sept. 2) 319 S. 534 SCRATCH KITCHEN

Gorgeous brick-walled Parramore gastrobar presents a diverse menu of eats, from tacos and wings to steaks and shrimp cocktails. Of note are the lobster rolls and spicy crab cakes, while the 20-ounce blackened ribeye and pankocrusted salmon with Cajun glaze are expertly prepared. Open daily. (reviewed Aug. 19) 534 W. Church St., 407-704-7913, 534scratchkitchen.com, $$$

TAQUERIA LAS CAZUELAS

There are scores of taco options at Taqueria Las Cazuelas, from lengua and al pastor to chorizo and nopales, but don’t overlook the soups and stews they’ve become known for; pozole, menudo and caldo de res are hearty meals of slurpy comfort. Call in your order beforehand to prevent a lengthy wait – they do a brisk takeout business. Open daily. (reviewed Aug. 12) 10360 E. Colonial Drive, 407-930-7632, facebook.com/ taquerialascazuelas2, $$

MEE THAI

The cuisine of Isan, a region in northeastern Thailand, gets the spotlight at Mee Thai with such bracing dishes as nam tok (waterfall beef), som tum (fiery papaya salad) and laab (ground meat salad) being expertly prepared. Traditional offerings like pad Thai are impeccably balanced, with ultra-fresh ingredients. The mango sticky rice (the rice is a luminescent green) makes a colorful ending. Open daily. (reviewed Aug. 5) 1200 Lee Road, 407-802-2323, facebook.com/meethaiorlando, $$

SEANA’S

Comfy café on the corner of West Colonial Drive and Good Homes Road, offers a mix of elevated Caribbean and soul food classics like oxtails slathered in a subtly sweet sauce over yellow rice with sweet plantains and “liquid gold” mac & cheese. Another winning combination: turkey wings smothered in house-made gravy served with smoked collard greens. The rum punch is, almost literally, a knockout. Open daily. (reviewed July 29) 719 Good Homes Road, 321-800-6846, seanasorlando.com, $$$

FLAVORS NIGERIAN

Nigerian classics are on offer here – like suya beef, goat pepper soup and, of course, jollof rice, considered Nigeria’s national dish. The fare is heavy and, more often than not, hotttt. The ayamase, a ruddy stew comprising bleached palm oil, beef, locust beans and a liberal dose of Cameroon pepper, made from dried scotch bonnets, comes with a verbal warning. Closed Sundays. (reviewed July 22) 3530 S. Orange Ave., 407-930-0988, flavorsnigerian.com, $$ n

Lily Collins in Emily in Paris PHOTO COURTESY NETFLIX

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: American Murder: The Family Next Door – Chris Watts is already serving five life sentences for the 2018 murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters. But if this true-crime documentary uncovers compelling new evidence, who knows? Maybe he’ll get slapped with a sixth! (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Good Morning, Verônica – Brazil brings us a suspenseful new series about a police clerk who investigates a seedy world of dating apps and suicide. Which are two things I associate with each other even at the best of times. (Netflix) Revenge of the Ghoul Log – Tune in ’round the clock to see the face of a perpetually grinning jack-o’-lantern looking back at you. (And you were worried the pandemic would make it hard for Tom Cruise to find work.) (Shudder) Scare Me – Writer-director Josh Ruben and The Boys’ Aya Cash portray authors who try to one-up each other with scary stories. Which I guess is what you do when you can’t afford Gucci. (Shudder)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: Dick Johnson Is Dead – This documentary follows a dementia patient who allows his daughter to dramatize the many scenarios in which he might meet his reward. Although that title would also make a great tagline for an ED medication. (Netflix) Emily in Paris – The latest series from Sex and the City creator Darren Star poses the question “What happens to a Midwestern Gen Z-er when she takes a job as a social-media manager in Paris?” Answer: More than’s ever going to happen to you, Failure-Face! (Netflix)

Song Exploder – Another podcast-turned-series, this one exploring the creation of classic tunes by the likes of Alicia Keys, R.E.M. and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Yeah, I was just thinking we hadn’t heard much from him recently. (Netflix) Vampires vs. the Bronx – Saturday Night Live director Oz Rodriguez presents a comedy series about Bronx residents who try to prevent vampires from doing to their borough what white people did to Brooklyn. I don’t know, guys; have you tried that artisanal Type O? (Netflix) You’ve Got This – Mexican-made comedy, with a financially successful husband and wife unable to agree if it’s time to have children. Meanwhile, most married couples I know are debating whether it’s time to have Mexican. (Netflix)

PREMIERES SUNDAY: David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet – The legendary globe-trotter headlines a nature doc that weighs mankind’s chances of avoiding extinction. Something tells me the odds will seem a lot slimmer if you watch it after You’ve Got This. (Netflix)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: Black Box – In the first of eight diversity-minded thrillers produced by Blumhouse and Amazon Studios, a single dad has to navigate both parenthood and amnesia after he loses his wife and his memory in a car accident. Come to think of it, that’s an excuse that could have gotten Chris Watts down to triple life. (Amazon Prime) The Lie – The second of those Blumhouse/Amazon originals finds a mom and dad distraught after their teenage daughter admits she’s committed murder. Listen, it could be worse: She could be listening to “WAP.” (Amazon) orlandoweekly.com

“ROGER THAT” I’m a 30-something gay man married to a 30-something gay man. For almost two years, we’ve been seeing another pair of married gay men around our age. They were our first experience with any sexual or romantic interaction outside of our relationship. The first six months were hot and heavy. We were together constantly and having sex almost every night. After the “honeymoon phase” ended, one member of the other couple (“Roger”) wanted to slow things down. Roger and I had some conflict over this, and I have to admit that I showed a pretty bad side of myself while grappling with insecurity. Eventually, Roger pulled me aside to talk one-on-one. He wanted us to be “friends who have sex sometimes.” Then, right after the COVID-19 lockdown started, Roger and I had another heart-toheart on my birthday. After many drinks and a lot of making out we both said we loved each other. Roger walked it back the next day. “I don’t know what you thought you heard last night,” he basically said, “but I’m not in love with you.” I was devastated. This isn’t what I want. I am in love with Roger and his husband. I don’t want to be “friends who have sex sometimes.” My husband is OK with just being friends with Roger and his husband, especially since their large friend group has adopted us and he worries we’ll lose all these new friends if I end our friendship with Roger and his husband. I would really like to talk this out with Roger, but I’m not sure I can get through that conversation without DTMFAing him. I mean, which was it? Were we a fun sexy fling and nothing about the last two years mattered? Or was he in love with me but decided the conflict and complication of this relationship wasn’t worth it? Which was it? Trouble In The Quad Roger doesn’t want what you want. That sucks and I’m sorry. But we’ve all been there. Falling for someone who doesn’t feel as strongly for us as we do for them, whether we’re dating as couples or singles, is always painful, but that pain is an unavoidable risk. And while it may seem unfair that you can only have Roger in your life on his terms, that’s the reality. That’s everyone’s reality, TITQ, because loving someone doesn’t obligate that person to love us back or love us the same way that we love them or want the same things we want. But Roger can’t impose his terms on you. If being “just friends” feels like an insulting consolation prize after what the last two years has meant to you, then Roger doesn’t get to be in your life. You can have terms too. Backing up for a second: You seem to believe that if the relationship mattered – if 54

Roger and his husband loved you and your husband and vice-versa – then it wouldn’t have ended. That’s false. Something can matter and still end. Something can also matter more to one person than it did to another person. (Or couple.) You don’t have to dismiss or minimize what the four of you had because Roger has decided, for whatever reason, that being in a quad with you isn’t what he wants. And if you’re hoping to get this quad back together … and it’s entirely up to Roger … you’re going about it wrong. If Roger got cold feet due to the “conflict and complication” of being in a poly relationship, TITQ, then your best move is to avoid conflict and complication. If you think Roger told the truth on your birthday and lied to you the next day, then you need to demonstrate the kind of emotional maturity that makes you a more attractive partner to a person like Roger. And provoking a confrontation with Roger – staging a scene where you’re likely to dump a guy who has already dumped you – will have the opposite effect. It will only confirm for Roger the decision he has already made. Your best bet – your best strategy – is to accept Roger’s offer of friendship and refrain from blowing up at him. You should also tell him, just once and very calmly, that you and your husband would be open to getting back together with him and his husband. Best case scenario, the quad gets back together. Worst case scenario, you have some great memories, a whole bunch of great new friends and maybe once in a while a hot foursome with Roger and his husband. Two last things … If you’re prone to blowing up when you don’t get what you want, well, it’s understandable that someone who dislikes conflict and complication would start getting cold feet once the honeymoon phase ended. If what you want is for Roger to reconsider the decision he’s made, well, you might also wanna let him know you’re working on your approach to conflict. If you don’t want Roger to regret getting the quad back together and then quickly end things again, TITQ, or for the next Roger or Rogers who come into your life to head for the hills after their honeymoon phases end, you’ll talk with someone who can give you the tools to better handle conflict. And finally, TITQ, the other two men in this quad feel strangely inert – more like houseplants than husbands. I mean, you have nothing to say about how Roger’s husband feels and very little to say about how yours does. Is Roger’s husband interested in keeping the quad together? Besides not

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● SEPT. 30-OCT. 6, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

wanting to lose some new friends, does your husband give two shits? Because even if Roger decides he wants back in, TITQ, and that’s a big if, your revived quad won’t last for long for if your houseplants – sorry: your husbands – aren’t just as invested as you are. The man I’m seeing is the first person I ever opened up to about my bisexuality. Over our first year together, we had several threesomes, but we both became uncomfortable with them and one day he told me he could not have that kind of sex with a woman cares about. We quarantined together and he felt COVID-19 had forced us to rush things. We decided to spend less time together. Now we only see each every two weeks or so. I thought it could be fun to reconnect and do some more threesomes. He agreed but asked me to handle things. I found us some amazing girls. But as in the past, our threesomes led to problems. I feel threatened, he feels jealous. We fight, I cry, he gets angry and acts like an asshole. I’m very insecure, depressed and have spent years in therapy. The threesomes feel like too much but we have great sex when we talk about other women. Is there any way we can make this work? Lost Into My Emotions I feel really sorry for the women you two are having threesomes with – even if you’re doing your very special guest stars the courtesy of waiting until they leave to break down in tears, LIME, and even if your boyfriend is polite enough to wait until they’re gone before acting like an asshole, these women are most likely picking up on the tension and may feel conflicted about the sex after they go. If you’re having these meltdowns and blowups in front of these women, LIME, they definitely leave feeling terrible and may worry they did something wrong when it’s you two who are doing something wrong: continuing to have threesomes despite knowing they never end well. While I don’t think a woman should waste her time (or pussy) on a man who tells her he can’t have “that kind of sex,” i.e. sex she enjoys, with a woman he cares about, I can understand why you might want to keep seeing this guy. (COVID-19 is making it hard to find new partners.) But you should stop doing the thing that doesn’t work – having threesomes – and do the thing that does work instead: talking dirty to each other about other women. And if you still want to get with women, LIME, do it solo. He doesn’t need to be there for you to enjoy an amazing girl. mail@savagelove.net

Meet Simba! Simba (A452665) is a sweet 6-year-old boy who was surrendered by his previous family because they could not care for him any longer.
