Tampa police officer retired early after acting ‘belligerent’ while cutting line at Busch Gardens. By Justin Garcia The CRB voted unanimously that the board agreed with the findings of the IA investigation. Although she retired before the investigation was complete, Roberts still received her full retirement benefits from the department, according to Degagne. The findings of the investigation were presented verbally by Degagne to the CRB on May 24—seven months after the incident occurred. The CRB—created under former Mayor Bob Buckhorn, and criticized as toothless—can only review closed IA cases.

Degagne said that the employee who was pushed by Roberts was approached by TPD and asked if he wanted to press charges, but denied to do so, saying the ejection from the park was satisfactory. He also said that Busch Gardens chose not to trespass Roberts, just to eject her for that day. CL reached out to the Busch Gardens media team to confirm what the police say about the situation, as well as TPD for more documentation on the matter. TPD has not yet responded to the question of how often officers that are under Internal
Affairs investigations can retire in the midst of them and still receive their full benefits. Dr. Carolyn Collins, who sits on the CRB, said that she hopes that Roberts wasn’t given preferential treatment by her fellow officers or by Busch Gardens, and that she hopes anyone who may find themselves in Roberts’ situation is treated equally. “Others might have been trespassed from the park, or maybe, if they’re doing something wrong, be arrested,” Collins said. “She [Roberts] did have a pretty good little time there, it appears, with her behavior.”

Tampa Police Department Captain retired early during an investigation into how she drunkenly tried to use TPD identification to cut the line onto a Busch Gardens ride, then pushed an employee and cussed out a fellow officer last October. On Oct. 24, 2021, TPD Captain Ashley Roberts was off duty, drunk, and tried to go to the front of the line for the “Cobra’s Curse” roller coaster, according to findings presented to Tampa’s Citizen Review Board (CRB). A line attendant told her it was against the rules, and that she needed a “quick queue” pass cut to the front of lines at the park. Busch Gardens visitors usually pay $15-$20 on top of regular park entrance fees to get such a pass, but Roberts and her two guests (who were not TPD officers) wanted to forego the cost the average citizen has to pay. The employee wasn’t having it, and Roberts got physical. “When an employee asked for her quick queue pass, she pulled out her TPD badge wallet, minus her badge, and said that was her quick queue pass, “ Jason Degagne, an Internal Affairs detective who investigated the case told the CRB on May 24. “When the employee went on the radio to report that Captain Roberts and her party did not have the correct passes, she pushed by him in order to get on the ride,” Degagne continued. “He alerted security and Tampa Police officers to stop her once they got off the ride.” After Roberts and her two guests pulled in from their rollercoaster ride, Roberts was confronted by Busch Gardens security and a fellow TPD officer. Degagne said she became “belligerent and disrespectful” to her colleague. “She even used foul derogatory language when addressing that particular police officer,” Degagne said. “She was subsequently ejected from the park.” An Internal Affairs investigation was initiated and just two days later, on Oct. 26 2021, Roberts took an early retirement. The investigation found that Roberts was in violation of three department policies: standard of conduct, abuse of position or identification, and rules about alcohol consumption.
CUTTING OUT: TPD Captain Ashley Roberts took an early retirement shortly after Internal Affairs started looking into her ‘‘belligerent’ behavior off-duty.

The action happens a week before FIA will take action at a June 21 school board meeting to protest Hillsborough schools still using Natives as mascots read more below. Tampa Bay Indigenous group will protest schools using Natives as mascots On June 21, Tampa Bay Indigenous activists will gather at a Hillsborough County School Board meeting in Tampa to protest against the continued use of Native people as mascots at local schools. For about a decade, the Native Americans have called for the schools to end their use of Native imagery for mascots, which they have several times made clear is disrespectful to their culture. They’ve written letters, held meetings and spoken at school board meetings, calling for the practice to end. But their demands haven’t been met, so they’ll be protesting on Tuesday, June 21 from 3:30 p.m.-6 p.m. at Hillsborough County School Board at 901 E Kennedy Blvd. in Downtown Tampa. At the protest, there are two schools in particular that the Florida Indigenous Alliance (FIA) will speak out against: the Chamberlain High School “Chiefs” and the East Bay “Indians.” “Join us in calling for an end to the use of Indigenous peoples as a sports mascot for
America’s fun and games,” FIA wrote on an event page for the protest. “No other people face this kind of stereotypical depictions.” When Hillsborough County Schools made changes to six schools in 2019, it was made clear that the county understood the impact that the disrespectful practice has on people from the Indigenous community. “The current mascots do not respect every culture and every person in our communities. Using Native American images and mascots can easily reduce living human beings to the level of a cartoon, caricature or stereotype,” the school district said in a statement to WFLA. “Even when there is no bad intent, these images can carry on and spread some of the symbols of the most painful parts of our great country’s history.” Across the country, major league sports teams and schools have changed their names and imagery in response to the demands from Indigenous people. Yet, Hillsborough Schools continues to allow Chamberlain and East Bay to use Native mascots. Spokespeople from Hillsborough schools have claimed that while the mascots remain in place at those schools, the schools themselves have become more sensitive to cultural issues. In the past, the callousness toward Native people was rampant. Photos on social media and from newspaper clippings from the ‘90s show seemingly non-Native people dressing up in Native regalia at Chamberlain throughout the years, practicing cultural appropriation. Local Indigenous groups are fed up with the appropriation, and call on supporters to join them as they escalate their resistance to the use of Native mascots. “It’s time to be actually respectful of the Indigenous peoples,” FIA wrote in a statement. “We ask human beings to stand with us in our call to end the use of Indigenous peoples as a sports mascot.”

ASS-HOLY SHIT: At least five Rays players decided not to wear rainbow-colored logos on their uniforms and hats.

Turns out the Rays have a few assholes on the roster. By Colin Wolf
D
uring the month of Pride—in a city that also holds one of the largest Pride celebrations in the nation, and in a state that is currently witnessing unprecedented attacks on the LGBTQ+ community—a handful of players from the Tampa Bay Rays felt emboldened enough to let everyone know that they are in fact, huge assholes. During the June 4, 16th annual “Pride Night” celebration at Tropicana Field, at least five Tampa Bay Rays players decided not to wear rainbow-colored logos on their uniforms and hats, citing an unwavering belief in a gay-hating version of Jesus Christ.
According to TMZ, the players included Jason Adam, Jalen Beeks, Brooks Raley, Jeffrey Springs, and Ryan Thompson. Adams was apparently elected to speak on behalf of the bigot boys, and said that they came to this decision because they don’t want to encourage the “behavior” of those in the LGBTQ+ community. “A lot of it comes down to faith, to like a faith-based decision,” Adam said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “So it’s a hard decision. Because ultimately we all said what we want is them to know that all are welcome and loved here.
LOCAL NEWS

But when we put it on our bodies, I think a lot of guys decided that it’s just a lifestyle that maybe—not that they look down on anybody or think differently—it’s just that maybe we don’t want to encourage it if we believe in Jesus, who’s encouraged us to live a lifestyle that would abstain from that behavior, just like (Jesus) encourages me as a heterosexual male to abstain from sex outside of the confines of marriage. It’s no different.” Speaking to WFLA, Ryan Thompson essentially stated that he did some research and discovered that he won’t be able to get into heaven if he pretends to like the gay community too much. “Those of us who decided not to wear the patch or hat spent a couple weeks in prayer and a deep dive into scripture on the subject at hand to come to the decision that we did,” said Thompson to the station, “If I believe the Bible is infallible and that everlasting life is attainable yet I bow down to public opinion in the name of tolerance, is that love? I don’t think so.” It should be said that the Rays organization has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community. It should also be noted that St.
Petersburg is a historically gay-friendly city, and Tampa has an openly gay mayor, which is why it’s unfortunate a few pitchers opted to let fans know that the team can’t even unify around something as simple as tolerance and support for marginalized groups. The timing of the stunt also couldn’t be worse for owner Stu Sternberg. On one hand our “Go woke, go broke” governor and his supporters will surely cheer on these players for standing up to the “gay agenda.” But the team absolutely needs the support from both mayors, and in the coming weeks Tampa Bay leaders are expected to get a better idea if the Rays will stay in the region, and more importantly how many tax dollars, if at all, they’ll receive for the next stadium site. St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch was currently traveling and could not be reached for comment. However, when asked if Tampa Mayor Jane Castor would like to respond on whether or not she would still support a publicly-subsidized stadium for a team that can’t unify around LGBTQ+ rights, Communications Director Adam Smith replied, “No, Thanks.”
“A lot of it comes down to faith, to like a faith-based decision.”

HUD intervenes at troubled Tampa apartment complex. By Justin Garcia
A
fter almost two months of controversy surrounding Tampa’s troubled Silver Oaks Apartments, the complex has failed its HUD inspection, which found that the residents there were living in life threatening conditions. Silver Oaks’ property management company, Cambridge Management, is also on the way out, according to Hillsborough County Commissioner Kimberly Overman and Layla Hartz, Director and Contract Administrator at Tampa Housing Authority. Both Hartz and Overman were informed by HUD that the complex received a score of “57c*.” According to HUD testing standards, anything below 60 is a failing score. The “c” added on to the score means that residents were living in life threatening conditions. The asterisk means that at least one inoperable smoke detector was found. “For now, I don’t think they should be moving anyone new into those apartments until the problems are fixed,” Overman told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. In July, Arco Management Corporation will be coming in to take over the complex. Hartz said that she was told by HUD that this company has a successful track record in taking over properties in disrepair and restoring them. Overman said that while Cambridge is on the way out of Silver Oaks, the county is still keeping an eye on that company and other property management companies in the area. She is holding meetings with other officials to figure
out exactly how Silver Oaks got to this point, and how to prevent it in the future. CL was told that HUD has not officially released the entire inspection of Silver Oaks yet, and we reached out to HUD to ask for the entire results. On April 12, CL broke the story about Silver Oaks and from there published 10 stories that dove deep into the problems, finding that residents were living in black mold infested apartments, with collapsing ceilings, rodents, and broken AC units, among other ills. Soon after, local and state elected officials got involved. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and current gubernatorial candidate Nikki Fried visited the complex two times to raise concerns. City councilwoman Lynn Hurtak toured the apartments and called for action. Soon after, Mayor Jane Castor got onboard and sent out a press release calling out Silver Oaks and saying that the administration had been responding to complaints there since 2020. Housing advocate Earlishia Oates had been active in drawing attention to the plight of residents at the complex, and told CL that while the current moves are a step in the right direction, more should be done, and more people in power should care. “While I appreciate the elected officials that got involved, too many didn’t care when we reached out,” Oates said. “There are kids and families there that are going to be hurting all summer long while they wait for the improvements take place, and there needs to be more done for them.”

The Jan. 6 hearings aren’t completely useless. By Jeffrey C. Billman
R
epublicans said last Thursday’s Jan. 6 Committee hearing was an “illegitimate” “sham” won’t fly outside of die-hard partisans, but the committee’s evidence was too compelling to ignore. They’re probably right, however, in that it won’t affect Democrats’ political fortunes this fall as much as inflation hitting 8.6% in May and gas prices eclipsing $5 a gallon. “Is Nancy Pelosi going to hold a prime-time hearing on inflation?” said Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a member of the Republican leadership. For 18 months, politicians who cowered during the riot have downplayed its significance. Weeks after Jan. 6, they refused to impeach Donald Trump for inciting the crowd, saying it was time to “move on.” As Trump maintained his grip over the party’s base, those who dared utter even the slightest criticism prostrated before him. They’ve called it a false flag, blamed it on Antifa infiltrators, and equated it to “left-wing violence”— i.e., vandalism that occurred during some Black Lives Matter protests. They’ve insisted it “was not an insurrection” and claimed the Biden administration is using it “to unleash the national security state against law-abiding U.S. citizens, especially Trump voters.”
They’ve done everything but look it in the eye. All the while, the cancer at its heart grew: In polls, two-thirds of Republicans consistently say that the 2020 election was stolen. Trump knew this wasn’t true. His campaign manager and data guru told him so. Former Attorney General Bill Barr, a lackey who brushed aside Trump’s obstruction in Robert Mueller’s investigation, told him “it was bullshit.” But Trump fanned the flames anyway, aided by a coterie of low-rent hangers-on and grifters, as the “stolen” election became an article of faith in Republican politics. And here we are, living in a political reality in which reality itself is defined by ideology and partisanship. This is why the hearings are necessary: So that we remember what these bastards would have us forget—the shock we felt watching a bunch of camo-clad Bubbas breach the Capitol, the visceral horror of witnessing a real-time Beer Hall Putsch. Only now, we better understand how coordinated the attack was, and the degree to which Trump was not just a passive bystander but an earnest participant.
In a speech just before the march to the Capitol, Trump told the Stop the Steal rally, “You’ll never take back our country with weakness. … Mike Pence, I hope you’re going to stand up for the good of our Constitution and for the good of our country. And if you’re not, I’m going to be very disappointed in you.” Trump, of course, wanted Pence to unilaterally declare him the victor—in other words, to stage a coup. Pence refused. After he learned Pence had been forced to flee the Capitol, Trump tweeted, “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.” Told the rioters wanted to literally hang Pence, Trump responded, “Maybe our supporters have the right idea.” Pence, he added, “deserves” it. Digesting it all, I couldn’t help but wonder why Trump isn’t spending his days in a federal prison, much less how he remains a front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination. Perhaps that’s why Fox News acted as Trump’s defense team on Thursday, not airing the hearing itself, but allowing Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity to spend two commercialfree hours “rebutting” it, drawing on the likes of Tulsi Gabbard and Darren Beattie—a Trump appointee who spent Jan. 6, 2021, telling Black people to “learn [their] place and take a knee to MAGA”—to cast doubt on the election and spread conspiratorial garbage.
INFORMED DISSENT
Soon, the right-wing propaganda cesspool will return to pretending Jan. 6 never happened, or that it happened long ago but isn’t relevant now. Also, LOOK! MIGRANT CARAVAN! There are a few reasons Democrats will get pummeled this fall (and they will). First, parties in power usually lose the midterms. Second, Democrats have an inherent disadvantage; they have to win the national popular vote by four or five points to keep the House, and polls have them losing by two. Third, you don’t overcome those headwinds when inflation is spiraling. Nothing in these hearings will change that. The immediate threat to voters’ wallets will always trump the more abstract threat to democracy. But while we need to reckon—right now— with the fact that Americans are about to empower representatives who have embraced the Big Lie, or at least the liar behind it, that doesn’t mean the Jan. 6 committee is pointless. It is laying down a historical marker and softening the ground for possible—though perhaps not likely—high-profile criminal prosecutions. No less important, it’s building a runway for bipartisan legislation to stop a future coup attempt, making explicit what pre-Trump norms always assumed to be true: The loser shouldn’t be able to cajole and threaten his way into the White House. That’s not the only election reform we need. But it’s a start.

point to meet with him to make sure he knew, directly from me.” Felciano left that conversation with Schrutt realizing that she had no choice but to rebrand, as Good Fortune was going to continue under the same name and concept. Last month, she made a separate social media account for Lucky Tigré, to begin the pivot away from Good Fortune Baby. And with Chinese characters, Japaneseforward cocktails, manga plastered on its walls, and a sushi menu with Southeast Asian characteristics—St. Pete’s Good Fortune leans on its “fusion” aspect heavily. “I’m not the first person to use ube, and I’m not the first person to do dumplings—but I think people can see that the similarities are there,” Felicano adds. Although only a few dishes from Good Fortune’s St. Pete menu have been released, and only time will tell if its fusion offerings mirror Feliciano’s unique take on traditional Pinoy cuisine. When asked by CL to comment on the similarities between his newest restaurant and Feliciano’s business, Schrutt said, “My vision for Good Fortune St. Pete dates back over a decade and I decided on the name a few years ago. I was happy to meet with Julie upon her request a few weeks ago, and this was the first time I learned about her business.” He feels that their meeting was a positive experience where they discussed their different concepts. “I thought we agreed we could coexist. I see room for both of our businesses and wish her the best.” There was also public pushback against the photos that Hunger Thirst Group used in its mood board for Good Fortune, which was attached to its press release for the new concept. It was a collage of several photos of Asian dishes, craft cocktails and people slurping noodles. More than half of the photos used were directly taken from the social media pages of 1-800-Lucky, an Asian food hall in Miami (that coincidentally uses a similar logo to Good Fortune.) Food influencer Rachel Sampson—who runs the Instagram account @stickaforkinme—tells CL that she did not consent to her photo being used in Hunger and Thirst’s press release for Good Fortune. The mood board was originally used in ILovetheBurg’s article about the restaurant, but the photo has since then been changed. CL was unable to contact 1-800 Lucky for comment. continued on page 36

ood Fortune is in the air, and it’s benefiting one young chef in particular. With the support of her family, community and heritage, Tampa native Julie Michelle Sainte Feliciano— most known for her Asian fusion pop-up Good Fortune Baby—will soon open her first brick and mortar space in South Tampa. The 24-year-old has waited tables, roasted coffee, worked in kitchens, poured lattes and spent the last 20 months hosting Good Fortune Baby pop-ups throughout Tampa Bay. Soon, she’ll dive head first into the world of being a business owner and restaurateur under a new company name, Lucky Tigré. Encouraged by family, friends, and mentors, the young, self-taught chef will debut Tampa Bay’s first sari-sari counter later this year inside of a small space in South Tampa stacked with snacks, sundries and Feliciano’s iconic dumplings and small plates. In Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines, “sari-sari” it translates into “variety.” “There are sari-sari’s on every street corner in the Philippines. They’re basically these walk-up bodegas where you can buy snacks, drinks and sundries—but everything is sold in a small, to-go portion,” Feliciano, currently the Creative Director of Ciccio Restaurant Group’s local brands, tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. While she and her mother Gina Bastasa Flores—who is often seen working Good Fortune Baby pop-ups alongside her daughter—take care of its menu, the Lucky Tigré sari-sari will also offer a wide variety of Asian snacks uncommon in local bodegas. Feliciano hopes to work directly with local distributors and oriental markets to source her goods, as supporting fellow Asianowned businesses in Tampa Bay is an absolute priority for her. She and her boyfriend started selling small plates inspired by traditional Filipino flavors— including their hand-folded dumplings—during 2020’s pandemic. Friends and neighbors were the recipients at first, but Good Fortune Baby quickly outgrew the cottage kitchen-style service. Feliciano hosted her first physical pop-up at Cafe Hey in the fall of 2020, a fellow Asianowned business in Tampa Heights. Since then, both her menu and fan base has rapidly expanded; it’s not uncommon for the
that its latest concept, an Asian fusion restaurant called Good Fortune, will replace Ichicoro Ane’s downtown St. Pete location. With the clear similarities of name—and even font and stylization of the name—Feliciano’s loyal customers immediately expressed their distaste of Hunger Thirst’s latest restaurant. A St. Pete Rising Instagram post about St. Pete’s Good Fortune concept is flooded with nearly 400 comments, many of which criticize Hunger and Thirst’s plan. Although Good Fortune Baby’s fans and other community members were shocked, Feliciano herself was not. She had been aware
of Good Fortune for months, and told CL she met with Hunger Thirst CEO Stephen Schrutt back in April. “I can’t really speak for the group’s intentions with their name or menu direction, but I did have close and personal relationships with a few key members on the team for this concept,” Feliciano says. “I do know he (Schrutt) was made aware of us early on, after speaking with multiple people on his team—and I also made it a

DUMPS LIKE A TRUCK: Sinigang pork dumplings are some of the offerings at Lucky Tigré. continued from page 35 DJ Casper, a popular Tampa Bay DJ that previously worked at St. Pete’s Park and Rec, calls Schrutt “the culture vulture of St. Pete.” Besides disagreements on music choices and other creative decisions, Casper says that someone really needs to address Schrutt’s treatment of other creatives in the Bay area. “It’s not shocking that he’s taking a concept from someone, but it is surprising that he’s copying someone else in Tampa Bay,” DJ Casper states. “Schrutt might have good intentions, but his decisions do affect his employees and other people in the community.” Casper points out that there are also similarities between Schrutt’s other businesses and already-existing concepts completely aside from Hunger and Thirst’s soon-to-open Good Fortune. The group also operates Tampa and St. Pete locations of Park & Rec, No Vacancy, Dirty Laundry and The Avenue. There are Dirty Laundry bars in both Los Angeles and Orlando,
alongside a Park and Rec in San Diego. Which all bear resemblances to Hunger and Thirst’s establishments. But Schrutt insists that he strives to make his concepts unique. “In this industry, I’ve seen a lot of names that are reused in other markets for various purposes. Business owners in other cities have contacted me about using similar names to mine, which I have supported,” he tells CL.

Year of the Tigré With her transition from Good Fortune Baby to Lucky Tigré in full swing, Feliciano’s last day at Ciccio Restaurant Group is rapidly approaching. She will soon dive into being a full-time business owner in preparation for her sari-sari’s debut at an address she’s not quite ready to make public. Although her and her mother’s small plate menu isn’t fully hashed out yet, Good Fortune Baby’s loyal customer base can expect their same bold flavors and unique dishes when the Lucky Tigré brick and mortar opens in South Tampa this fall.
Feliciano has big plans for her small space—including a menu of experimental soup dumplings (OG Good Fortune Baby customers remember her tinola-filled dumplings), growing fresh Filipino produce in its garden area, and even teaming up with local roasters to ethically source coffee directly from the mountains of the Philippines. Feliciano will focus on her hybrid small plates, while her mom will stick to more expected Filipino offerings. “My mom has never had a culinary background— she just had a lot of siblings to take care of. Her dishes are more traditional and she’ll make everything from kare kare to sinigang, ” she says. Adjacent to Lucky Tigré’s to-go order window, will be roughly 25 outdoor seats. The sari-sari will tentatively be open Wednesday-Sunday, with hours similar to other Filipino joints in Tampa; Filipiniana Cafe, Manila Eats and Mata’s
Philippine Cuisine are also closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Feliciano’s last pop-up under the Good Fortune Baby name takes place in St. Petersburg on June 25. Pop-ups will slow down as she takes the plunge into Lucky Tigré. The latest sneak peak features her okonomiyaki wontons, which are savory, bite-sized renditions of the traditional Japanese pancake. Follow her new Instagram page at @luckytigretpa to preview menu items ahead of the sari-sari’s grand opening. And as for her thoughts on Good Fortune, slated to open in The Burg’ this summer, Feliciano wishes them the best. “We’re grateful for everyone’s support and for everyone sticking up for us. I’m excited for a new chapter with Lucky Tigré.” After all, Feliciano has the phrase “Good Fortune” tattooed over her knee—but a massive, intimidating tiger sprawled over the entirety of her back.
“We’re grateful for everyone’s support and for everyone sticking up for us.”

Pay it forward: Established local chefs share their favorite spots, sage advice At a private gathering in April, Tampa Bay’s top chefs gathered at Mise en Place to catch up with each other, break bread and get harassed by Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, which had just two simple questions: Who are the unsung or young up-and-coming local chefs or cooks who don’t get enough attention? What advice would you give to a young chef who wants to make it in the scene? Here are some of the highlights. See even more responses by finding this post at cltampa. com/food.—Ray Roa and Kyla Fields Brian Lampe, Executive Chef at Rooster & the Till “Bryce Bonsack at Rocca as you mentioned, but also Cody Tiner at District South. Steve Franco does an excellent job at Cena. Ben Pomales and Adrianna Siller who are at Bandit now. Those are just a few I think that are gonna be the future of the food scene in Tampa Bay for a long time to come.” “I think young chefs gotta come up in a way similar to a guy like Marty Blitz here at Mise. What I mean is that if you think you’re gonna stage at a couple of restaurants then become an executive chef, it doesn’t work that way. I think you need the experience of working under somebody like Marty who has the most amazing palette in this city— I’ve always been impressed with the way he can combine flavors and textures. You need that foundation of cooking alongside someone like that, with experience of being a leader, to be the full package and run a very successful business.” Wesley Roderick, Owner and Chef at Supernatural Wine & Food “I eat at Thinh An Kitchen, I get that tofu. And you can never get there too early, on a
Sunday that after church crowd is crazy” “If you’re gonna open up a spot in the next year, I would not finance with credit cards. I would have mentors, people that you can talk to, reflect on what you’re thinking and where you want to go, someone to help test your ideas. And don’t assume that you have the right answer. In life, you probably will never have the right or best answer for anything, so be prepared to ask the questions from other people who have been through it; they don’t have to give you the perfect answer, just meaningful perspective so you can learn from it and not have to learn the hard way like an ass.” Traci Bryant Ferguson, Partner and Chef at Nina Hospitality “The Little Lamb, a gastropub in Countryside. The chef, James Renew, is well traveled and cooked all over the world. It’s a casual restaurant, but he brings all that knowledge to the restaurant.” “Young chefs should be patient. I’ve been in this industry since I was 18 and I’m 37 now. We grew up cutting our teeth in kitchens where people are screaming at each other. I wouldn’t be where I am without that, but we need to have a different understanding of how we respect and treat each other and respect ourselves. Don’t pass your stress onto your employees. Show patience and kindness to everybody that comes through your door because everybody comes from a different walk of life, which means everybody has something to offer, too. Bring them into your support system along with their different levels of experience. Lean on people for their strengths, try to highlight those strengths and don’t try to be the person that does everything, share your wealth with your team.”

Tampa gets Big Gourmands, no stars, in Michelin Guide debut. By Ray Roa
F
lorida’s Michelin Guide was released last Thursday night during an invite-only event at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes in Orlando— with Tampa restaurants earning three Bib Gourmands, but no stars. Ichicoro Ramen and Rooster & the Till in Seminole Heights, and Rocca in Tampa Heights earned Bib Gourmand designation, which Michelin recognizes as a great value. “These are restaurants where one can have two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for under $49,” Michelin wrote in a blog post. Sixteen Tampa restaurants were classified as “recommended” by Michelin, including Yummy House, Koya, Columbia, Bern’s, Mise en Place and more (see a full list at the bottom of this story). Restaurants in Pinellas County were not visited by Michelin inspectors because bringing the guide to the Sunshine State was an effort coordinated by Visit Florida, Visit Orlando, Visit Tampa Bay and Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau—with Visit St. Pete Clearwater (VSPC) not included. The Bradenton Herald reports that Michelin stands to make as much as $1.5 million from Florida tourism bureaus over the next three years. In an email to CL, a spokesperson for VSPC told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “Although not part of the original three cities, we feel the concept alone elevates the culinary scene in Florida and brings attention to the high-level of gastronomy offered in the State.” Michelin Stars were awarded to four Orlando restaurants: Capa steakhouse, Soseki sushi, Kadence Japanese, and Knife & Spoon steakhouse. O-town also earned seven Bib Gourmands and 23 recommended restaurants. Knife & Spoon is helmed by Chef Gerald Sombright, a friend of Rooster & the Till chef Ferrell Alvarez, who traveled to Tampa to cool alongside James Beard-semifinalist Alvarez in August 2021 for a guest chef dinner series. In all, Michelin inspectors found that Florida is home to 14 one-Michelin star restaurants and just one two-Michelin star restaurant (French restaurant L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami). In all Miami is home to 11 Michelin starred restaurants, 19 with Bib Gourmands and 35 recommended restaurants. “As you can see, Miami, Orlando and Tampa have very much to offer to international food and wine enthusiasts,” Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides wrote in the blog post. “These talented chefs and their committed teams create culinary experiences matched only by the amazing attractions of each city. This very
first selection of the MICHELIN Guide in Florida highlights glittery Miami, storied Orlando and breathtaking Tampa, offering a unique blend of international cuisine and Florida flavors. Local foodies as well as travelers will enjoy exploring these mesmerizing and rich Florida culinary destinations,” Poullennec added. But the Michelin Guide has come under fire in recent years. “It’s a pay-for-play situation,” says Knife & Spoon’s John Tesar about the taxpayer dollars used to bring the Michelin Guide to Florida. “Our business loves adulation, but there is no truth in food anymore. Only politics, popularity and pandering.” It’s a blunt, if conflicted, declaration by a five-time James Beard Award nominee, who admits he relishes the thought of his restaurant receiving a Michelin star.

what I displayed emotionally was reality for me at the moment.” But letting it all sink in, the pride he feels by far supersedes any disappointment. On Friday, he even went into Rooster to be with his team, which was glowing with pride; the energy from guests, Alvarez said, “was infectious and exactly what I needed to reinstate my gratitude for my partners, our employees and my family.” “The love and support I am surrounded with daily is amazing and I won’t lose sight of that,” he said.
“As you can see, Miami, Orlando and Tampa have very much to offer to international food and wine enthusiasts.”

On Instagram, Ichicoro dedicated its award, in part, to its late co-founder and chef Branden Lenz. Beloved Korean franchise opens in Temple Terrace, plus more local food news. By Kyla Fields
A
unique dessert franchise with a cult-like following has taken the country by storm, and Temple Terrace is the most recent city that has succumbed to the Mochinut trend. Located at 1401 N 56th St. in Temple Terrace, Tampa Bay’s first Mochinut will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, June 18, complete with mochi doughnuts and Korean corn dogs. After Saturday’s grand opening, Tampa’s debut Mochinut will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week. Its doughnuts will start at $3.25 each, corn dogs will run you $4 and its different boba teas start at $5.85. A representative from Tampa’s Mochinut tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that its location will rotate its flavors every three days, in addition to weekend specials. Popular flavors of their chewy and stretchy doughnuts include mango, matcha, black sesame and Nutella. Flavors range from location to location, but Mochinut’s typical doughnut menu can be found on mochinut.com. And its doughnuts aren’t the only things filled with mochi—its Korean corn
dogs are also coated in rice flour, making its coating crispy yet chewy. Fillings include mozzarella cheese and hot dogs, while coatings range from french fries to hot cheetos and crushed ramen noodles. Its various drink offerings include different types of milk teas, Thai tea and matcha lattes—but its signature beverage is its brown sugar boba. There are already Mochinut locations heading to Bradenton and Pinellas Park, in addition to its recently-opened storefront in Orlando. Other parts of Florida that have latched onto the Mochinut trend include Jacksonville and Sarasota. Although the mochi doughnut trend originated in Hawaii, Mochinut itself is a California-based company that opened its first storefront in 2020, according to sandiegoville.com. With hundreds of locations across 27 states, the niche dessert cafe is taking the U.S. by storm. For the latest news on Tampa’s highlyanticipated Mochinut, follow its Facebook at @ mochinut.tampa.
FOOD NEWS
After Saturday’s grand opening, Tampa’s Mochinut will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week. And if you don’t want to wait until June 18 to try mochi doughnuts, head to Tampa Bay’s different Ding Tea locations, which sell select flavors of the trendy dessert. Downtown Tampa’s Moxie’s Cafe opens new location just two blocks from the old one The new Moxies is just a short walksie from the old one. Moxies Cafe is now open at its new location at 302 E Kennedy Blvd.—only a few blocks away from its previous space at 514 N Tampa St. The cafe’s Facebook announced its first day open at the new space this month, after recent news that its 17-year-old home near the Dohring Building just two blocks away was up for demolition and two weeks after closing the old spot altogether. (Tampa’s Historic Preservation Committee has since asked city council to consider stopping the demolition.) Although Moxies has moved down the street, the menu features the same made-to-order continued on page 46

Italian restaurant Bonu Taverna opens out of downtown St. Pete’s former Cider Press Cafe space The Bonu Taverna team has been tirelessly renovating its space at 601 Central Ave. for the entire first half of this year, but the restaurant finally celebrated a highly-anticipated grand opening in downtown St. Petersburg this month. Self-described as an “avant garde” Southern Italian concept, Bonu Taverna’s menu includes shareables, vegan and gluten-free options, pastas and “piatti grandi,” aka large plates. Entrees include lasagna, littleneck clams over linguine and chicken Milanese alongside small plates like marinated olives, watermelon, goat cheese, and pistachio pesto salad, grilled octopus, smoked salmon and calamari. St. Pete’s newly-opened Bonu Taverna also sells a wide variety of imported wines in addition to its ever-changing dinner menu. Guests can expect the Italian restaurant’s offerings to change regularly, as its owners emphasize the importance of using fresh, local ingredients. Cider Press Cafe, a popular vegan restaurant, was open out of the Central Avenue space until the end of last year. Its co-owner Johan Everstijn told CL in January that they were forced out of the space after the landlord did not renew their lease. Its new location in the Historic Kenwood district—originally slated to open this spring—will be an upgraded version of its previous concept, complete with a gastropub inspired menu, stage for drag shows and live music and a friendly, neighborhood pub feel. Keep up with St. Petersburg’s latest Italian restaurant by following its Instagram at @bonu_taverna. Hours at the location on downtown’s coveted 600 block are 5 p.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week. 601 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. bonutaverna.com

continued from page 43 sandwiches, salads, omelets, breakfast parfaits and wraps. According to an employee of the popular cafe, the only options they no longer carry are the veggie and gyro sandwiches and bowls. Many of its sandwiches and other dishes can also be made vegetarian or vegan upon request. Beverage options include hot and iced lattes, coffee, cold brew, matcha and smoothies. In December of 2021, it was announced that downtown Tampa’s Dohring building—which housed Moxie’s previous location alongside First Watch and Bamboozle—had been purchased by South Florida developer Kolter Group. Bamboozle’s Tampa Street location, next to Moxies, already announced a move to Seminole Heights. Moxie’s is now open on Kennedy Boulevard from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. INDUSTRY LEDERHOSEN: Tampa’s best Oktoberfest has announced its 2022 dates. Good Fortune, a new Asian fusion bar and restaurant, will open out of St. Pete’s Station House this summer The empty restaurant space on the ground floor of St. Petersburg’s Station House that Ichicoro Ane most recently occupied will finally get a tenant. The space—located at 2601st Ave. S—will be home to Asian fusion concept Good Fortune, which has become the ire of several community members who've taken to social media to criticize the concept after it launched. Slated to debut sometime this summer, this brick and mortar is the latest restaurant from Hunger Thirst restaurant group, which owns and operates popular St. Pete concepts Dirty Laundry, The Avenue, Park & Rec and No Vacancy. The upcoming 6,000 squarefoot concept will feature an intimate 12-seat sushi bar, indoor seating and an outdoor patio, as a press release states. Good Fortune’s layout will be an open-floor concept that revolves around the focal point of the restaurant, its 14-seat cocktail bar which will sling Japanese whiskey and sake alongside local brews and bubbles. More information is at hungerthirstgroup.com.
Tampa Heights coffee shop King State will soon have a full liquor bar King State, known mostly for its coffee, will soon serve both uppers and downers. This month, the Tampa Heights cafe said it would start serving a full liquor menu under the Ups-N-Downs banner. The company is still waiting to receive its Certificate of Occupancy from the city before it can move to liquor service. Once in operation, King State will close at 3 p.m. with Ups-NDowns running from 4 p.m-11 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays. Cocktails, which have yet to be detailed, will only be served during Ups-N-Downs’ hours of operation, except on Saturdays and Sundays, where King State—located at 520 E Floribraska Ave.—will start serving brunch-y cocktails like bloody marys at 9 a.m. More information is at king-state.com.—Molly Ryan

reak out your favorite Old Navy shirt, Tampa. Mayor Jane Castor’s Boom By the Bay returns next month to celebrate Independence Day with three firework displays, live music and shows, food trucks and more spread across Tampa’s waterfront on Monday, July 4. The firework displays will be located at Armature Works, Sparkman Wharf and Bayshore Boulevard (south of Davis Islands Bridge). The Davis Islands display will be the largest display of the three. Before the firework show begins at dusk, there will be a variety of family-friendly activities occurring throughout the city, including a water-ski show outside of Sparkman, a hot dog eating competition at Armature Works (Tampa’s original weiner eating contest happens the day before in Ybor City), plus food trucks at Curtis Hixon Park and a boat parade throughout Riverwalk. A schedule and map is available by finding this post on cltampa.com/arts. Not to be outdone by Tampa, the City of St. Petersburg has announced plans for a big Fourth of July fireworks display and celebration at the St. Pete Pier. St. Petersburg’s free Fourth of July fireworks event will go down at Spa Beach Park—located at 800 2nd Ave. NE—from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. with fireworks happening at 9 p.m. Admission is free, but there are private viewing tickets available, which include a private bar, primo seating for the fireworks and access to porta-potties. A press release says tickets are limited and that prices will “increase soon.” Also on site for the celebration are a craft beer garden, food trucks, local vendors, pop-up entertainers and a Guns N’ Roses tribute band. More information is available via thefourthstpete.com. And if you can’t wait until the Fourth of July, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s “Summer Celebration” has fireworks every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 7 (with a bonus display on July 4). Throughout the day, guests can enjoy a variety of refreshments like a revamped selection of sweets from the Moroccan Delights ice cream parlor and complimentary beer samples at Pantopia Drinks & Snacks for those over 21. C Ann Wilson Rock and roll is no longer a boys-only club, and when Heart let itself in back in 1975 with the release of Dreamboat Annie Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson could have taken over the world if they wanted to. “There’s still a long way to go, because I think that the real thing is for men and women to work together,” Ann told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay from her house on the St. John’s River. “I think women have changed the business a lot, because it’s not only musicians, but it’s managers, attorneys, publicists and just all levels of the entertainment industry.” Read a full interview with Ann Wilson via cltampa.com/music. (Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa) Gene Loves Jezebel w/Rosegarden Funeral Party/Layne Lyre/Offerings Brianna Bullock should be a relatively familiar name to longtime observers of Tampa’s indie-rock scene, but she’s going to go ahead and re-introduce herself by opening for ‘80s U.K. rock band Gene Loves Jezebel. Bullock, a former bassist for Glove, also fronted Siouxsie Sioux-revering outfit Maudlin Moon, but started to grow antsy when the darkwave act hung it up. So she started to mess around with more electronic music production and Ableton during quarantine. The sound of her new solo project, Offerings, is inspired nu ‘80s Italo disco and will be on full display where Bullock will likely play a new single, “Tarnished Heart,” which is 100% about feeling defeated in a tumultuous relationship. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
C Scxtt Aye ‘Doves’ album release w/ Jnkyrd Last Friday, Scxtt Aye recorded a conversation with the [beatsnchill] podcast to detail his new album, Doves, but this week the Tampa rapper—whose painfully transparent lyrics play like pages of a journal over stripped back, dark beats—performs the record live and backed by a full band onstage at the best listening room in Ybor City. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing Co., Ybor City)

C Afrobeta w/Moonbae/Consumer Ready Miami duo Afrobeta can go from sweet like a guava pastry to sweaty like 4 a.m. in the club in a heartbeat. Over the years, lyricist-vocalist Cuci Amador and synth-centric producer/ arranger Smurphio have brought their tropicalic funk and livetronica to stages across the globe, including some at Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, Burning Man and Ultra. This weekend the band is just a few hundred miles north of home and playing alongside local extraterrestrial synthwave act Moonbae and Bay area beatsmith project Consumer Ready, which cuts and mixes everything from harp-bop to ‘50s jazz and 8-bit soundscapes into lo-fi beat tapes made especially for the Florida night heat. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) Keith Urban w/Ingrid Andress Urban’s last appearance in Tampa involved CL staffers chasing the four-time Grammy winner and his wife Nicole Kidman around the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino ahead of the country music superstar’s 2019 show in front of just 1,500 people at the Hard Rock Event Center. Way more fans will be at this gig, as it’s just across Interstate-4 at the old Gary shed that can hold close to 20,000 people. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)
C Sauce Boss During the pandemic, Bill Wharton—aka Sauce Boss—had one of the biggest breaks of his life. The gumbo chef/ blues guitarist composed the score for “Jimmy Carter: Rock and Roll President,” a film of which was praised by 39 himself. Wharton is also the subject of Jimmy Buffett’s 1999 song “I Will Play for Gumbo,” and while Dunedin Brewery has some kick ass wings, we’re definitely saving room for the Boss’ own homemade gumbo which he promises to dish out at this free concert. (Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin) C Too Many Daves w/City Mouse/ Tension Electric/No More Living Tampa punk history takes to Seminole Heights care of Too Many Daves, a band featuring three Daves: Titltwheel’s Davey Quinn (who’s rumored to have written songs for Blink-182 in the Damnit days), A.D.D. fanzine founder Dave Disorder who ran one of the area’s first punk houses in Clairmel and also plays in What Me Worry alongside John Stanier of Helmet, plus Creative Loafing Tampa Bay photographer Dave Decker (who’s a local punk legend in his own right). The Daves are joined by Joe Paez (aka Joe Dave) and Richie Lawler, who together play a “totally partyn’” brand of pizza punk that’s more or less unforgettable. Tampa-based punky metal noise maker Tension Electric plays support alongside City Mouse and No More which are local punk heros in their own hometowns (Los Angeles, Gainesville, respectively). (American Legion Post 111, Tampa)
SAT 18
C Dead Kennedys w/Nekromantix/The Venomous Pinks It’s been five years since the Dead Kennedys played a local gig (back then, we weren’t as aware of just how close to home “Nazi Punks Fuck Off!” would end up hitting). While original lead singer Jello Biafra won’t be present to howl out the punkery of four studio albums, other members will. Joining in are horror punk band Nekromantix and New Jersey punk trio The Venomous Pinks. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) C Dream Thing w/Chaunces/Blonde Gentlemen “Psych-rock” kind of undersells Dream Thing. The Sarasota band certainly wears fuzz on its sleeve and feels like it just just crawled out of the garage, but songs like “Pileup” are poppy and reminiscent of both Dum Dum Girls and The Kills. It returns to headline a downtown Tampa dive where the band played support in February, with St. Pete experimental-pop outfit Chaunces and Tampa indie-rock group Blonde Gentlemen opening the no cover gig. (The Hub, Tampa)
Sickick w/Don Pablo/Gemini Lomus Rai Babber apparently had a fear of open water, which he recently conquered during a nightclub gig under intense heat where he almost passed out. The Canadian EDM producer and TikTok phenom better known as Sickick detailed the epiphany on social media, but this set should be a little easier since it’s just poolside near the Courtney Campbell. If you’re looking for more EDM this weekend, Kayzo plays The Ritz on Friday and Tampa’s TK Lounge has Jkly&Hyde on Saturday. (WTR, Tampa)
SUN 19
The Resonance w/The Paper Airport/ Neverless/In The Pocket It’s not dad rock, but pops would appreciate going out to support some locals. While it’s been a hot minute since any new music has emerged from anyone on this Sunday bill, any reason is a good one to go catch Americana punk band The Resonance live. Same deal with indie trio The Paper Airport, alt-ska band Neverless, and jazz outfit In The Pocket (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)
TUE 21
C Backstreet Boys w/Delta Goodrem Yep, Backstreet’s back, alright. The band released a new album, DNA, in 2019—which it is supporting on this tour stop—and has a Christmas album planned for this year. Australian
superstar Delta Goodrem opens. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa) C Joe Jackson He may not have any new, post-COVID music to share, but the story behind how the 67-year-old’s latest, Fool, came to be is the most Joe Jackson thing you’ll ever hear. Since his backing band is tighter and way more in touch with material when a tour comes to an end, the U.K. songwriter decided that the next time he recorded an album would be at the tail end of a tour. Sure enough, the day after his Fast Forward run came to an end in Idaho, he started production at Boise’s Tonic Room Studios. You’ll likely hear some Fool-ery in Tampa, this gig at one of the city’s most beautiful venues is a career retrospective featuring both full-band and solo sets.(Tampa Theatre, Tampa)

Collie Buddz w/Iya Terra/Sierra Lane/ The Intracoastals Over half a year after a glorious set at the return of Reggae Rise Up, Bermuda-born reggae fusionist Collie Buddz is embarking on a short summer tour. Kenny Mullins’ Knex project opens and is sure to please fans of his band Resinated. California reggae band Iya Terra, singer-songwriter Sierra Lane, and New Smyrna Beach-based reggae rock band The Intracoastals round things out. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) C NoCap There might not be a better time to see NoCap live because the Alabama rapper born Kobe Vidal Crawford might not play rooms as small as The Ritz much longer. Pitchfork says the 23-year-old “is like a blues singer who fell in love with battle rap” and cites his emotionally transparent—but overtly fun—output in lumping Crawford in with hip-hop heavyweights like Boosie and Kevin Gates. In fact, the indie tastemaking website even said he’s “on the precipice of becoming someone LeBron raps along to on Instagram.” No cap, indeed. (The Ritz, Ybor City)

Draw your sword By Caroline DeBruhl
Dear Oracle, I recently started out on a crosscountry journey that I’ve been fantasizing about for years and have started planning seriously for since lockdown began. I’ve put my things in storage, given up my apartment, and am living out of my SUV. I’m a week in and just tested positive for COVID. I’m OK physically (I’m riding it out in a motel) but wondering if this is a bad omen. Anything else I should know on my trip?—Ramblin’ man Cards: Ace of Swords, Eight of Wands, King of Swords Dear Ramblin’, mazel tov on starting your journey, but I’m sorry that you couldn’t outrun the ‘Rona. I’m glad you’re in a place where you have access to running water and glad to hear you’re doing OK. (Be sure to tell the manager when you check out so they can give the room a very deep clean.) For your journey, I drew cards for what you know, what you don’t know, and what you should prepare first. First, don’t worry about bad omens. As the Ace of Swords, you know this is a journey you need to take, an adventure where you are running wild and free in your individuality. The Ace of Swords can be a mastery of your own mind, and if this has been a long fantasized-about trip, then I would guess you had to put some things in order before heading out—including doubt or anxiety. However, you’re out here! You did it! But at the risk of sounding like a white woman in a crystal shop, remember: it’s about the journey. Because what you don’t know is that the Eight of Swords will be throwing all sorts of shit at you. This might be a lot of bumps in the road (COVID, car troubles), or it can be a lot of exciting but draining events (like a week of all-nighters in Vegas before going to Burning Man), but whatever it is, you need to make sure that you aren’t getting spun out. You are taking this trip for a reason, so don’t rush through. To prepare for this, you’ve got to embrace your inner King of Swords. This means keeping a level head and looking at things with a critical eye. Do you need to restock on water before the desert drive? Can you afford to go off-road with that amount of gas? Should you pull over and sleep? You don’t want to die in the belly of an abandoned bus because you refused supplies and accidentally poisoned yourself like that kid from “Into The Wild.” Really listen to yourself and your body about what you need. But if you keep a level head and good stock of supplies (and some solid paper maps), I think this journey will be a profound experience for you. You learn a lot about yourself when you keep the company of one, and I think that knowledge
and experience will serve you well. Bravo on following a dream. Just don’t eat any berries you aren’t 100% sure about. Dear Oracle, this year I founded a company, and we are developing a product. Development is going well in some ways and slow in others which is stressful. My worry is that our funding will run out before we’re finished. Do the cards have any advice to make this launch a success?—CE-Oh- no Cards: Six of Swords, Ace of Wands, Ace of Pentacles (reversed) Dear CE-Oh- no, when I started this column, many people asked about quitting their jobs to strike out on their own, and it’s exciting to get questions from people who took the plunge. With the Ace of Wands, I can tell that this is an exciting moment for you. The Ace of Wands is filled with creativity and possibility, a card of firsts and births. This idea or product is your “baby.” It might be something the world has never seen before or something unique in its own way. It’s exciting energy to be around. But I get where the anxiety comes from surrounding development because there’s a “we” involved. The Six of Swords is a card of transitions, particularly concerning the ego. This idea or product might be your “baby,” but you aren’t the only one working on it, meaning the success or failure depends on other people. Letting go of that control can feel terrifying, but it’s something you have to do. You hired these people for a reason—one of which is that you can’t do everything yourself. That doesn’t mean you can’t be an effective boss. However, you need to guide that boat, so see why some parts of development are slow and if there’s a workable solution. (Though if it’s something beyond control, like supply-chain issues, recognize those limits.) The Ace of Pentacles has the energy of a fresh start in business, and with it reversed, I wonder if you’ve already missed a milestone in development you previously set. If you have, that could certainly cause some stress. But, the best forward is one where you’re prepared. Be mindful of the money going into this project. Would it save money in the long run
ORACLE OF YBOR
SHA MAN SKA KAT E/A DOBE
if you hired another person to finish with development? Do you need to tailor your goals? Do you need (additional) investors? While the Ace of Wand energy is exciting, you want to keep your head clear about the long game. Perfectionism is a gateway drug to inertia, and while you don’t want to rush an unfinished proto-type out, you don’t want to bleed the budget dry as you tinker with something to make
it “perfect.” Plenty of companies improve upon their product after launch, so version 2.0 can be the goal down the road, but right now, what’s the best you can do with your time, talent, and budget? Constrictions don’t have to dampen your excitement. You’re still doing it! You’re just at the beginning. Best of luck with your launch, my dear.

Baddy dom By Dan Savage
You were an inexperienced sub when you played with this guy, BDSM, but you don’t say whether he was similarly inexperienced. But even if we give him the benefit of the doubt—even if he didn’t know that attempting to renegotiate limits during a scene is never okay—you have every right to be angry. “When it comes to D/s dating, the question is almost never about a person’s intentions but rather about the effect,” said Lina Dune, host of the Ask a Sub podcast. “Even if this guy didn’t mean to put BDSM in this awful situation—which, let’s be real, challenging someone’s limits is as fundamentally red-flaggy as it gets—he still did that and BDSM’s feelings matter.” Since you wound up having to ghost this guy, BDSM, I assume that means he continued to contact you expecting to play again. Which means he either didn’t realize he’d done something wrong, BDSM, or he hoped that you, an inexperienced sub, would continue to submit to his manipulative bullshit, i.e., the consent violations he tried to pass off as consent-seeking “renegotiations” once play had started. “The burden is never on the victim of bad behavior to change the perpetrator,” said Dune. “But if it would make BDSM feel better to dash off a quick message to him about the definition of ‘hard limits’ and explain how destabilizing it can be for a sub for a Dom to switch things

up like this mid-scene, or challenge limits in general, I don’t see the harm.” If this guy is a bad Dom—if he’s a truly shitty person who can’t be trusted—hearing from you isn’t going to magically turn him into a safe and trustworthy Dom. But it might make you feel better, BDSM, and who knows? Maybe he’ll start to worry about his reputation. After all, you can do more than talk to him… you can talk about him. Now, if he’s the kind of shitty Dom who preys on inexperienced subs, he may not care what people in the kink scene think of him. But if by sharing the details of your lousy first kink experience—
SAVAGE LOVE
JOE NEWTON
I’m a 29-year-old bisexual woman in a nonmonogamous relationship. A few years ago, I wanted to explore my submissive side and met up a with a Dom I connected with on a kink site. We had a few drinks and hit it off. We discussed what we were comfortable with and our limits beforehand. I set a few hard limits. In the middle of our first play session, he tried to renegotiate those limits. I said no a few times, but he kept asking and I eventually gave in. I should have ended it there, but it was my first time in a D/s situation, and I think he took advantage of that. The experience left me feeling terrible, but I didn’t communicate that to him at the time and just ended up ghosting him. I have since found a terrific and loving Dominant partner who has thankfully helped me explore my kinks in a way that makes me feel safe and cared for, and I know now that a good Dom ALWAYS respects limits, especially in the middle of play. Recently, I have seen this bad Dom on a few different dating apps and I’ve been thinking about sending him a message letting him know that what he did was wrong. I also worry that more women are going to have their boundaries violated by this guy. Will anything good come from this or should I just let it go?—Bitterly Debating Sending Message
My husband is a cross-dresser and wants “he/ him” pronouns used when he is presenting as a boy and “she/her” pronouns to be used when he’s presenting as a girl. He does not want to use “they/them.” I suggested he go with “he/she,” but he doesn’t think “he/she” is an appropriate option because he wants people to use the pronouns assigned to what he is presenting as. He doesn’t want to be insensitive to those whose presentation isn’t obviously binary but feels it is obvious when he’s presenting as either masculine or feminine and that it should be easy for people to use the pronouns he would prefer without having to specify them. How do you opt out and ask people to read your current “presenting gender” and apply traditional pronouns in the moment?—Helping Everyone Seeking Help Everywhere
here in my column or elsewhere—you inspire other newbie subs to avoid this guy and/or immediately end a scene if some other shitty Dom pulls the same crap, it’ll have been worth the effort. Lina Dune runs the BDSM meme page @ askasub on Instagram, where she gives D/s relationship advice and serves as fairy submother to her 100K followers. She recently released an online course about dating for subs, which is available at askasub.com/ subsurvivalguide. My husband and I were at a kink event that required pronouns under scene names.
Are we talking nametags here? Because if we’re talking nametags, HESHE, then your husband can wear a “he/him” nametag when he’s presenting as a man and “she/her” nametag when he’s presenting as a woman. But if this is a kink event run by anal weirdos who require attendees to preregister their scenes and list the names of all players involved in those scenes and itemize the pronouns those players intend to use during their scenes and stick to those pronouns under threat of expulsion… then your husband will just have to pick a team, i.e., pick the gender he will present as that night and the pronouns that go with it.
I am a white American cis-gendered paramilitary-looking heterosexual-seeming guy who happens to be in a polyamorous relationship. In the kink community, I am considered a “service top.” I enjoy group sex with my partner and in a group sex setting I will sometimes play with other men. But I am not interested in playing with men outside of those hyper-sexual situations. How am I supposed to identify? I ask because for those of us who grew up in the 1990s, a person was considered gay if he performed even a single gay act. I am comfortable/confident in myself, and if a guy wants to mess around with me during group sex, I figure it doesn’t hurt me any to make him feel good. I would rate these experiences on the positive side of neutral. I worry that using terms like “heteroflexible” or “mostly straight” contributes to bisexual erasure but calling myself bisexual seems appropriative because I can walk through life with all this heterosexual privilege. I would like to identify as bi because I think it helps normalize it but somehow don’t feel like I make the cut. If you could help me out, I would really appreciate it.—Just Oppressed Enough I think you’re perfectly entitled to identify as bisexual, JOE. But just to be sure, I got a second opinion from Zachary Zane, the bisexual sex-advice columnist for Men’s Health. “I often receive questions from bi folks who don’t feel ‘queer’ enough to claim a bisexual label,” said Zane. “Typically, I hear this from cisgender women married to straight cis men who haven’t experienced the same level of oppression as, say, femme gay men in relationships with nonbinary individuals.” But your own personal experience with oppression—or your lack thereof—doesn’t invalidate your queerness or disqualify you from identifying as bisexual. “How sad is it that our understanding of queer identity is inextricably linked and dependent on having experienced oppression,” said Zane. “That is so wildly fucked up. Being queer and/or bisexual is about your attraction to genders,” and not about being or feeling oppressed. “So I would say yes, JOE can identify as bisexual because he enjoys, in certain situations, playing sexually with men,” said Zane. “At the same time, I think JOE can and should also acknowledge his privilege from how he presents—which he’s already doing, and should continue doing—and hopefully, he will use that privilege to support other bisexuals who don’t experience the same hetero-presenting privileges he does.” Zachary Zane is the co-author of Men’s Health Best.
