righteous triumvirate of Tampa Bay visual artists comes together this weekend in Ybor City for “Alchemy.” The art show happening at The Bricks on Saturday features work from three Tampa-based artists: Ali Norman, Bekky Beukes and Michelle Sawyer, who drive the action at their own studios and special events. Norman, an educator and printmaker who’s pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking techniques, is the owner and founder of Seminole Heights’ Labyrinth Studio which is host to the neighborhood’s magical monthly party, Heightened Senses. Some of Beukes’ emotionally-charged work quite literally looks over downtown Tampa from atop the Rialto Theater on Franklin Street, but the South African artist has been making her mark on the Bay area since 2014. Sawyer, one half of Tampa’s Mergeculture studio, spent the last seven years doing murals with Illsol but has since re-focused on smaller scale work that will be on display for this free show where DJ Scorpio Vision plays selector. ast Saturday afternoon, hundreds of activists gathered in downtown Tampa to protest the first-ever Moms for Liberty (MFL) national summit. The right wing, book-banning group has drawn ire from progressives for pushing its agenda, which includes trying to limit what teachers can talk about and teach in classrooms.

In Florida, MFL has shown support for laws that seek to censor the books available in school libraries. Hundreds march to protest Moms For Liberty national summit. By Justin Garcia “Racist, sexist, anti-gay, Christian fascists go away!” the crowd shouted as they marched down Tampa street toward the Marriott, among other slogans. The crowd set up across the street from the Marriott and was a massively loud force to be reckoned with. Their voices could be heard echoing through the entrance to the Marriott as some people attending Metrocon at the Tampa Convention Center cheered on the protesters while they walked by. MFL members started trickling out of the hotel as they heard the protesters.

The safety marshals of the march broke up the conflict and directed the crowd to march back to Lykes Gaslight Square Park, where it originated. Protestors flipped off the MFL crowd; as they walked away one of them said, “You can hide behind the money, but it won’t take you far, and we’ll still be here.” Scholars point out that MFL is not as grassroots as it presents itself to be. “Two of Moms for Liberty’s National Summit sponsors, the Leadership Institute and Heritage Foundation are critical members of the Council for National Policy, a secretive network of right wing billionaires and Christian fundamentalist leaders that underwrites and coordinates right wing politics,” Maurice T. Cunningham former associate

ast Saturday, hundreds of activists gathered in Downtown Tampa to protest the first-ever Moms for Liberty national summit. The right wing group has drawn ire from progressives for pushing their agenda in schools, which includes trying to limit what teachers can talk about in the classroom. In Florida, Moms For Liberty (MFL) has shown support for laws that seek to censor teachers in classrooms; legislation the group has championed include what critics called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and the “Stop WOKE” act. The group also supports the abortion bans which went into effect with the repeal of Roe Vs. Wade and are actively harming women across the country. The MFL summit started last Friday, with DeSantis giving an opening speech while a small crowd of teachers protested outside. But the protest on Saturday was massive, and took over the streets of downtown Tampa as the protestors marched from Lykes Gaslight Square Park to the Water Street Marriott, which was hosting the event just a few blocks away. Before the march, members of the Party For Socialism and Liberation, who organized the event, said they believe the views of Moms For Liberty lean fascist. “They represent the fascists in this country,” Ruth Beltran of PSL told the crowd as they prepared to march. “They don’t want anyone that has a different religion, or different beliefs, they want a plain white state with straight people and that’s all they really want.” The group also said that the democrats are not going to save anyone, and that the working class has to grab political power in America for anything to change substantially. “They said, ‘Vote for Joe Biden to vote out fascism,’” said Karla Correa of PSL. “Look at us now. It’s not looking good. The Democrats are in power and our rights are getting taken away.” The crowd (300 throughout the day, according to organizers) took the streets right next to Tampa police headquarters, but unlike the heavy police presence during the George Floyd protests of 2020, police had very little presence throughout the entire march. As the crowd marched, it chanted words expressing disdain towards Moms For Liberty.

MFL summit attendees' fears of Metrocon were palpable all weekend, with their aversion to anime, crossdressers and Gen Z coming to the forefront in multiple instances during this reporter’s time there. Democrats tried to approach the protesters but were met with anger as well, with the crowd shouting, “Voting blue is not enough, Democrats we call your bluff!” at both Rep. Charlie Crist (hoping to be Democrats’ pick to run against DeSantis) and Sen. Janet Cruz. Both politicians were attending the Florida Blue conference, which was also las weekend at the JW Marriott across the street from the MFLconference. When asked for comment about getting shouted down, Crist said, “Everybody needs

CAN’T GO BACK: Organizers estimate 300 people participated in protests last Saturday. Some summit attendees were overheard saying, “look it’s just all a bunch of teenagers” and “they’re totally wrong about everything but it’s OK they’ll probably just go to Metrocon after this.” The crowd was in fact diverse, and included people young and old.

My condolences

Mayor refuses to apologize for TPD's harm to Black Tampenõs.

T

ampa Mayor Jane Castor doesn’t seem concerned with the healing power of apologies, at least when it comes to the way the Tampa Police Department has harmed the Black community. She has yet to apologize to the family of Arthur Green Jr., who died while restrained by TPD as he was having a diabetic emergency in 2014. WTSP recently reported that the city has now settled an eight-year lawsuit with the family, who accused two TPD officers of using excessive force while trying to arrest Green as they failed to recognize he was having a medical emergency. As part of the settlement, Green’s family said they requested an official apology from Castor, who was police chief at the time of his death, but she refused. “The Tampa police didn’t treat our dad like a human being,” Arthur Green’s stepson Kurt Young told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “And it’s deplorable that Jane Castor is trying to avoid accountability for that.” Young said that he was raised by Green just like a biological son, and pointed out that he was a beacon of hope for the community and a mentor to many. Young said that TPD’s initial response was to try to vilify his dad, to avoid taking responsibility for what the police did to him. “Castor had the chance to apologize and be on the right side of history, but she’d rather try to uphold this false narrative that my father was somehow in the wrong and that TPD acted according to policy,” Young said. The Greens are just one of many Black families that have been affected by TPD’s actions, especially when Castor was chief from 2009-2015. Castor oversaw “Biking while Black”, which disproportionately targeted Black bicyclists for police stops, searches and tickets. A Tampa Bay Times investigation found that from 2003-2015, TPD wrote more than 10,000 bike tickets. Black people received 79% of those tickets despite being just 26% of the population. While the Department of Justice investigated the biking tickets, Castor also oversaw the “crime free multi-housing program” later dubbed “renting while Black.” The program targeted mainly Black renters for eviction and is currently under federal investigation. The mayor’s administration kept that investigation a secret for five months until holding a press conference about it in April. After vigorously defending both of the raciallybiased programs, Castor eventually listened to the insistent demands of the public, especially the Black community, and allowed for the programs to change. While running for mayor and under pressure, Castor said the “Biking while Black” tickets were wrong, but did not issue an official apology to the people affected. Last month, a BuzzFeed

investigation found that several Black police officers have become disillusioned with their jobs after realizing the racial inequities inside TPD. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay asked the mayor’s administration about the lack of apology to the Green family, along with what seems to be a trend of not apologizing to the Black community for transgressions under her leadership. “Mayor Castor offered her condolences directly to Arthur Green’s son in 2014,” wrote the city’s Communications Director Adam Smith. “She also was scheduled to meet with family members several months ago, but they decided against it. Arthur Green was a good man, a widely respected youth coach and mentor who left a positive legacy in our community.” But offering condolences is not the same thing as apologizing. Offering a condolence is to express sympathy, not to admit that TPD was in the wrong in Green’s death. When asked follow-up questions about TPD’s programs that have caused harm to the Black community, Smith did not respond. The Green family told CL that Castor’s administration had already confirmed that she would not be offering an apology before the meeting that Smith mentioned. When they heard she was refusing to apologize, the family then refused to meet with her. “The lack of accountability allows Castor to placate the community in a way that she doesn’t feel like she has to be responsive to the needs and wants of the community, including our family,” said Owen Young, Green’s stepson. “Harming a community and not apologizing one time is a mistake, two or three times is a trend.” As the controversies surrounding the mayor pile up, the Restorative Justice Coalition, a group focused on racial and economic justice in Tampa Bay has become fed up by Castor’s unwillingness to concede when she and TPD have committed wrongs. “Although it is disappointing, it is certainly not a surprise to us at RJC that Mayor Castor has not apologized or taken any true responsibility for her leadership over TPD’s misconduct that resulted in the tragic and preventable murder of Arthur Green Jr.,” RJC wrote in an email. “She has a continued legacy of enacting harm to Black communities, none of which she has taken true responsibility for.” RJC said that Castor has an opportunity to truly transform Tampa and “her legacy of violent racist policies” but has chosen to instead ignore the harm caused. Castor has shown that she does in fact have the ability to apologize—but mainly when others have committed wrongs. She righteously and immediately apologized when councilman Orlando Gudes was accused of

toxic, sexually inappropriate behavior in his workplace. The city quickly settled with the victim for $200,000 after putting out a press release as soon as the allegations surfaced in the media. It didn’t take eight years and a long legal battle, as was the case with the Green family. She also apologized for past administration’s roles in erasing Tampa’s Black cemeteries. And she immediately offered a lighthearted apology to football star Tom Brady when he was kicked out of a park while working out shortly after he first moved to Tampa to play for the Buccaneers. But for families like the Greens and other members of the Black community hurt by TPD and its problematic practices, there’s not much in the way of apologetics. And when Castor is not refusing to apologize, she’s avoiding answering questions when the Black community is asking who is responsible for certain decisions. In December of last year, Black construction experts first raised attention to the massively flawed “City Center at Hannah Avenue” project. They were concerned that the Black community hadn’t been invited to participate, and that the project itself didn’t follow proper state laws in the bidding process. They wanted to know who was responsible, along with several city council members Castor waited over five months to admit that she gave the final approval on that project. Now, the city is considering changing local laws to increase transparency and accountability—the very same things that she publicly called on city council members to improve on earlier this year.

Black leaders of social justice groups like the Hillsborough NAACP and Florida Rising have pointed out that Castor needs to be more transparent and honest in the way that she operates. “As a high ranking police officer and then police chief, she got used to people doing exactly what she said and being able to control the narrative,” Robin Lockett of Florida Rising told CL in May. “But being a politician isn’t supposed to be like that, the people elected you, so you have to listen to them and be honest with them.” The inconsistencies in how Castor responds to concerns of the Black community are clear to the sons of Arthur Green Jr., who wonder if the people of Tampa will demand that the mayor take accountability for behavior that has caused widespread harm. They told CL that city council and county commissioners have apologized to them for the harm TPD caused to their family, which shows that elected officials are capable of doing the right thing. “The lesson we can take from Castor’s behavior is that we have to support candidates that demonstrate a commitment to addressing the problems associated with our community,” said Kurt Young. “If anything, Castor has shown contempt for the Black community.” Owen Young said that it’s up to the citizens of Tampa to decide what’s next. “High ranking officials should be capable of apologizing and admitting when they’re wrong,” he said. “If they can’t do that, it’s time for things to change.”

sad day for Tampa Bay’s plant-based folks is nigh, as Dharma Southern Kitchen recently announced the upcoming closure of its Armature Works location, at 1910 N Ola Ave. in Tampa Heights. The popular vegan eatery took to social media this week to break the news to its customers. Its Facebook and Instagram state that Sanford’s Dharma Southern Kitchen has already closed, and that Tampa’s last day of service will take place on Monday, Aug. 1. When Tampa closes, only Dharma Southern Kitchen’s flagship restaurant in Orlando will remain open. “We’ve been so appreciative of the overwhelming support from our Sanford ‘n Tampa fam, and we’re working on plans to feed y’all again in bigger locations with bigger kitchens ‘n bigger menus!” the farewell—or “see you later”—post from Dharma reads. Known for its plant-based southern comfort food, some standout dishes on Dharma Southern Kitchen’s menu include its Nashville Hawt chicken sandwich, southern fried chick’n, and its Big Blue chick’n nachos topped with creamy nacho cheese, black bean puree and chiles. Popular sides include cheesy curly fries, BBQ cauliflower, crispy Brussels sprouts and the dish that help put Southern Kitchen on the map—its mac and cheese that comes in traditional, buffalo and garlic. Until its closure on Aug. 1, Tampa’s Dharma Southern Kitchen will be open from 7:30 a.m.10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m. on Fridays, 8 a.m.–11 p.m. on Saturdays, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays. Dharma debuted inside of Armature Works’ Heights Public Market in the spring of 2019, after solidifying a customer base in Orlando. There are currently several restaurants in the Tampa Heights market that offer vegan options, such as Hemingway’s Cuban Kitchen, Kipo’s Mediterranean Cusine and Bento Asian Kitchen, although Dharma Southern Kitchen is the only strictly plant-based eatery. And if any Tampeños crave Dharma’s gooey mac and cheese after next month’s closure, its location in Orlando will remain open seven days a week. A few menu items from its flagship location that aren’t available at Armature Works are its fried green tomato and Carolina BBQ jackfruit sandwiches, biscuits and gravy and creole grits.

square-foot patio will debut at 1050 Water St. in the spring of 2023. Ash’s menu “will offer a focused yet fun and playful cuisine with Italian undertones,” and play neighbor to popular U.K.-based Asian fusion restaurant Wagamama. Originally slated to debut at Water Street Tampa at the beginning of this year, Wagamama’s website just states that its Tampa location is “coming soon.” Both restaurants will be located on the ground floor of the Asher building, adjacent to a new Synovus bank. Renderings from Proper House depict Ash as a sleek and bright restaurant, adorned with pink and neutral tones and large windows. Its curved entryways and accents give it a slight retro feel, but its open floor plan and fresh colors keep it incredibly modern. A large ash tree resides in the center of the dining room, as the restaurant’s namesake represents creative expression, productivity, strength and longevity. The upcoming Italian eatery will be the restaurant group’s fifth Tampa concept, alongside recent Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient Rooster & The Till, Nebraska Mini Mart, Gallito Taqueria and Asian street food-inspired Dang Dude—which debuted at Sparkman Wharf earlier this year. continued on page 22

PO’ US: Tampa will soon have less places to get a vegan po’ boy.

Tampa-based Caspers Company will sell all of its McDonald’s locations There are hundreds of McDonald’s locations throughout Tampa Bay, and a good chunk of them will get a change in ownership this fall. Caspers Company, which owns dozens of storefronts throughout Florida, announced plans to sell all of its locations on Oct. 1., although no other financial details have been disclosed. With 60 locations that span from Tampa Bay to Jacksonville to Tallahassee, the Tampa-based company has been operating franchises of the fast food chain since the 1950s. The Tampa Bay Business Journal, which broke the news, details the countrywide trend of corporate McDonald’s buying out franchisee’s locations, although it’s unsure if that’s the direction the Caspers Company will take. TBBJ also states that the Caspers Company is one of the largest employers in the greater Tampa Bay area, with over 3,000 local employees. The third-generation family business is currently run by Blake Casper, plus his sister Allison Casper Adams and her husband Robby Adams. Their grandfather, Fritz Casper, opened the first McDonald’s in Tampa on South Dale Mabry in 1958, according to the company’s website. The siblings also own Oxford Commons, a group that operates Oxford Exchange, The Stovall House, The Library in St. Pete and the recently-purchased Current Hotel in Tampa.

Oxford Commons’ newest endeavor is upscale Mediterranean restaurant Predalina, which will debut at Water Street Tampa early next year. In addition to its business endeavors, the Caspers Company is known for various charitable efforts, mostly under its philanthropic branch, Caspers Cares. The family has worked closely with charities like Ronald McDonald House, Hillsborough Education Fund and Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay. The Salty Donut is coming to Tampa’s Hyde Park Village Tampa Bay is about to get a lot saltier. The Salty Donut’s hand-crafted donuts and brewed coffee have found a new home at Tampa’s Hyde Park Village. The Miami-based chain’s new storefront will move into 1519 W Swann Ave., according to TBBJ. No specific date has been set for its opening. The family-owned business serves a variety of locally-sourced speciality donuts, including caramel toffee crumb, butterbeer, blueberry coffee cake, gluten-free chocolate chip and sea salt, vegan cinnamon roll and Oreo cake donut holes. You’ll also find a mixture of caffeinated beverages on the menu, including cinnamon cereal milk lattes, maple brown sugar cold brews, cortados, cappuccinos and The Salty Donut’s signature batch brew. Donuts and drinks vary depending on location. The Salty Donut currently has three Florida locations—two in Miami and one in Orlando— and is expected to open three more including an additional Miami location, one in West Palm Beach and the Tampa spot. The South Tampa location is the only one of the three not yet posted on the donut shop’s website.

Let’s go Rhonda

A St. Pete artist digs at DeSantis, plus more local art news.

A

s Florida continues to face unprecedented legislative attacks on LGBTQ+ communities, one St. Petersburg artist is responding with a dig of his own. Chad Mize, a multimedia artist and designer, is now selling stickers depicting Gov. Ron Desantis as drag queen “Rhonda Santis.” The design comes weeks after the Florida republican expressed support for criminalizing parents who bring their children to drag shows. “Well, let’s do something even more ridiculous and put him in drag,” Mize told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Rhonda is shown waving a rainbow flag with a speech bubble that says, “gay,” hinting at Florida’s so-called “Dont’ Say Gay” bill that restricts talk of gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom. Mize originally shared his “Rhonda Santis” design on Instagram with the caption, “happy pride everybody,” in June. All proceeds from sticker sales will benefit Equality Florida, a political advocacy organization and the state’s largest LGBTQ+ rights group. Mize has sold more than 800 stickers in two weeks, with orders coming in from across the country. In June, Desantis expressed support of Florida Rep. Anthony “Blackface” Sabatini’s proposed legislation that would make it a felony to bring minors to drag shows following controversy surrounding a family-friendly drag show in Dallas. Desantis announced he asked his staff to consider the proposal, which follows recent antiLGBTQ+ moves in Florida like the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, the Transgender Youth Sports ban and removal of LGBTQ program funding from the state budget. Mize hosted a “Say Gay” art show at Mize Gallery in June and says it’s essential he uses art to assist Florida’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. He also said some “Let’s Go, Rhonda” yard signs may be in the works.

Hillsborough and Pinellas—shared new renderings of the project that promises to bring half-a-mile of beach, venues for concerts and events, bars, restaurants, retail and more. A press release says the Peak model is built around sustainability, but did not detail how it will focus on “implementing resources and practices that will benefit Tampa Bay’s waterways and ecosystem.” The release also touted impressive numbers from a preliminary survey by a hospitality consultant (90% of respondents expressed high interest, a 10-year projection of more than $1.3 billion in business output, more), but did not include the full survey results. Peak Surf Park’s website says it will integrate sustainability from the beginning of the process and that depending on land and permitting approvals, the park could take 2-3 years to be built. It promises locally-sourced labor, goods and restaurants and a hopes for a “net zero” ecological impact. The economic impact findings come from an analysis of proposed Pinellas County locations, and a rep for Peak Surf Park told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that there are multiple proposed locations in the Bay area. Waves will be created by technology from Australia’s Surf Lakes. “The company is revolutionary in its design with the ability to simulate consistent, ocean-quality waves for varying skill levels in a controlled setting and offer beginners and experts alike a unique surf experience,” the release added. A video of the wave-making process kind of looks like the whole thing works in the same way your cousin Vinny puts a big floaty around his belly and then bounces up and down in the backyard blow up pool—but more sophisticated, scientific, and marketable, obviously. Surf Lakes’ own completed and operational Yeppoon site in Australia is not yet open to the public, but the company says it has “signed five Exclusive Territory Agreements and three Licence Agreements with more on the way.” In the U.S., Surf Lakes says it received 183 inquiries, and signed licenses in San Diego, Los Angeles and Nevada. In addition to those locations Surf Peaks also has “territory sold” in Tennessee.

HE’S A DRAG: Chad Mize’s design comes after the governor’s criticism of parents who bring kids to see drag queens. Earlier this year, Peak Surf Park mastermind Tony Miller told CL that surfers of all levels will be able to enjoy the 30-acre park, and compared it to a ski mountain where there are green, black and black runs. Miller added that entrance fee won’t break the bank and that surfing will happen at an hourly rate. “We are also exploring memberships and will announce those opportunities as we get closer to the opening,” he added. Peaksurfpark.com has more details along with the park’s Facebook (@PeakSurfPark) and Instagram (@peak.surfpark) accounts. See the new renderings below.—Ray Roa Disney World’s Splash Mountain will officially become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in 2024 Disney announced that Splash Mountain will be turned into a “Princess & The Frog”-themed ride called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure by 2024. While the shift in focus from its long-time, “Song of the South”-inspired Br’er Rabbit theme has been known for some time, details about the ride have been scarce. Now we know Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will replace Splash Mountain at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. “Picking up where the film left off, guests will join Princess Tiana, Naveen and jazz-loving alligator Louis on an adventure through the bayou as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration where everyone is welcome,” Disney VP Carmen Smith said.

Disney said they took time to get the representation of New Orleans and South Louisiana right for the ride. “From exploring the French Market and the bayou, to consulting with academics, chefs, musicians and cultural institutions, Imagineers have received inspiration from all over the region and learned from local experts along the way,” Smith said. The story at the heart of “Princess & The Frog” is based on real-life New Orleans icon, Leah Chase. The chef converted a stand owned by her husband’s family into a sit-down restaurant called Dooky Chase’s that has been a staple of New Orleans dining for well over half a century. Chase passed away in 2019 at the age of 96. The ride turns the page on a chapter of their history Disney would just as soon forget. Song of the South featured prominently in Disney’s history thanks to its iconic song “Zip-a-Dee-DooDah” and the rides at both parks. The film depicts “Lost Cause” imagery of a pre-Civil War South, pushing the false idea that slaves were happy to live on plantations. It’s a motif carried over in the state song of Florida, though the lyrics were revised in 2008 to remove offending passages. Disney stopped releasing the movie for home video decades ago and refuses to add it to its streaming platform Disney+. This story was first published at our sister publication Orlando Weekly.—Alex Galbraith

Where it’s at

More than 100 places to see live music in Tampa Bay. By Josh Bradley

I

n last year’s music issue, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay urged readers to not take the live music restart for granted. While 2022 sees the concert calendar busier than ever, many venues are still navigating the effects of last-minute cancellations, staffing issues and a new demon we’re all dealing with—inflation. On the surface, it looks like things are back to normal, but many venues that received grant

money as part of last 2020’s historic passage of the Save Our Stages act are still using it to stay afloat. In fact, a new extension gives recipients of the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant until March 2023 to use funds, meaning many of our favorite spots to see live music are still living on the edge of financial ruin (not like it wasn’t a week-to-week survival game before the pandemic anyway).

In 2022, CL live music contributor Josh Bradley took an inventory of what’s left—or where it’s at—when it comes to places to see live music. With the exception of Floridian Social Club and the existing heavy hitters (Jannus Live, Mahaffey Theater) St. Petersburg has seen coffee shops, plant sellers, breweries and record stores step in to host shows that used to live in clubs or listening rooms. In Tampa, the big players (Amalie Arena, MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Yuengling Center) are still attracting the country’s most exciting tours while smaller rooms

(Crowbar, The Attic, the recently-relocated Orpheum, Skipper’s Smokehouse, The Ritz) continue to play their roles. What’s more is that local bars have popped up as surefire places to see great local talent. What follows is a new listing of more than 100 places to go see live music in Tampa Bay (and we’re sure we missed a few). With an influx of new residents and people continuing to re-emerge from the ongoing COVID-19 infection waves, there’s never been a better time to get reacquainted with the scene. We hope this is a good way to start.—Ray Roa

You can’t call yourself a local without going to a few shows at these spots.

The Castle A multi-level nightclub—literally

designed like a castle—located in the heart of Ybor City. National DJs set themselves up in the venue’s legendary Dungeon, designed as a slammer with chains, a fireplace, and even couches to relax on. For a lot of people, COVID is still a thing. And while staying away from people is the safest option for immunocompromised music fans, being holed up for two-and-a-half years might be just as bad for their mental wellbeing. These aren’t the only places to go catch an outdoor show (read: MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre), but they are some of most unique venues that’ll further endear you to the local music scene.

The Ale and the Witch With a unique selection of craft beers from around the country on tap, this hole-in-the-wall joint has live music for fans of folk, jam bands, bluegrass and Americana. Cage Brewing What better way is there to drink than being surrounded by pinball machines and a foosball table? Local bands and artists will often take the brewery’s covered outdoor stage—featuring a UFO mural—and later, indulge in some of the 18 beers on tap, or maybe a Mother Kombucha tea. 2001 1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg. Local artists normally take over the stage at this proud television-free social club. It offers chess games, creative sandwiches on the menu, and a completely safe space for people of all mindsets and beliefs. What’s more is that Seminole Heights regularly plays host to free Americana and jazz sets while St. Pete is home to a weekly jazz night led by trumpeter James Suggs. 5016 N Florida Ave, Tampa. independentbartampa.com / 1049 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. independentbarstpete.com

Coldplay @ Raymond James Stadium

When it comes to big name artists—from Sprinsteen to Kendrick to, um, Jack Harlow—there are a handful of tried and true places to go. From arenas that usually pack in 7,000 for a Lizzo show (Yuengling Center) to sheds where you can singalong to Foo Fighters songs with 19,000 of your closest friends (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre) these are the rooms where it happens. Don’t sleep on the Hard Rock Event Center either, which has recently booked Sting and has Alicia Keys headed there in the fall.

Amalie Arena Everybody knows the home of our beloved Stanley Cup Champions, but when the Bolts are away, major performers all across the entertainment spectrum come here to perform. In recent years, the 21,500-capacity forum has hosted the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Ariana Grande, and Adam Sandler. 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. (813) 301-6500. amaliearena.com

Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino It’s surprising that it

took 15 years for Tampa’s Seminole Hard Rock to add a proper event center to its facility, after a few years of hosting certain shows on a smaller stage. In 2019, the ballroom-style facility right above the casino finally opened to the public. Knowing the Hard Rock, event prices are generally pretty high (unless you just head downstairs and win the money to pay off your ticket), but

Formerly known as the 1-800-Aas-Gart Amphitheatre (and the Ford Amphitheatre before that), this outdoor venue with free, onsite self parking, is right on the Florida State Fairgrounds. Whether it’s a political rally you’re after, or a sweltering hot night rocking out with Slipknot or Brad Paisley, you’ll raise your eyebrows at least once when looking at the Amp’s lineup of events. 4802 U.S. Hwy301 N, Tampa. (813) 740-2446. livenation.com Raymond James Stadium It isn’t often that the home of the Bucs hosts a concert, but when it does, it feels like the whole city comes around. With a capacity of 65,890,

the former Tampa Stadium has on-site, $40 parking, no trouble allowing cameras inside, and even in the event of you getting rained on, at the very least, you can be one with the stadium where Tampa Bay itself won a Super Bowl. 4201 N Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa. Nona Slice House This Safety Harbor pizzeria also constantly has live music going on while you wait for your deep-dish Dr. John with no onions. Being an outdoor setting, most of the acts have their acoustic guitars with them, and not as elaborate of a setup as, say, New World, but one of the hottest spots in town is still excellent exposure for the up-and-comers. 997 Main St., Safety Harbor. Whiskey Wings Formerly known as Mugs N Jugs, this local sports bar chain occasionally hosts live music from local bands and artists that primarily cover songs from over 30 years ago. Big takeover

Meet the St. Pete artist bringing flair to the record bin. By Gabe Echazabal

I

f you’ve recently visited Daddy Kool, St. Pete’s premier record store located at 800 28th St S at The Factory, you’ve probably noticed some pretty eye-catching and artistic divider cards, colorfully indicating individual artists’ sections while browsing. The store’s manager and resident music expert, Manny Kool, enlisted the services of local artist Steve Madden to bring artistic flair to the plain, white, thick plastic sheets the shop uses to categorize and separate its stock. Madden, who is also a devout music lover, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay how the partnership came about and how he approaches each and every mini-art project he cranks out for usage around the record store. Read a short Q&A below and see the full conversation via cltampa.com/music.

How did Manny approach you regarding getting those things done for him? Well, I’m a regular customer there, and I had done some ads and stuff for them. He just mentioned it one day. He wanted to get a more consistent look with the cards. I’ve still only scratched the surface. I think you could easily go through the store and maybe not even notice some of the more elaborate ones. But yeah, there’s just so many things to think about, there’s just so many different artists and musicians and stuff.

RECORD STORES

SWMADDEN/INSTAGRAM

#theupcomingness

How long have you been creating the shop’s divider cards? I think it’s only been like a couple of years… maybe three years. I think it probably was before the pandemic when Manny asked me. I just think he just wanted a more uniform style and for me to kind of try to come up with some kind of hand-drawn typeface. They progressively got more elaborate. They don’t that long. Well, the Grateful Dead one took a while. It took like maybe an hour. But usually, they take probably half an hour to an hour, maybe.

What’s the inspiration? It kind of depends on how familiar I am with the artist. For a lot of the ones I’ve done, I’ve just used the artist’s name. If I don’t know anything about the band, I’ll look into it a little bit more. But, I’ve done more elaborate ones for the artists I really like a lot. Like [John] Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Meat Puppets and Iggy Pop. So, if it’s someone I like a lot, the imagery is pretty easy and it’s just a question of narrowing it down. Also, you have to think someone’s got to be able to read this and understand what it’s supposed to be saying. But the inspiration comes a little easier if it’s an artist that you’re already familiar with and that you really dig. But, if someone is walking down an aisle and they see something that catches their eye but they’re sure who that artist is, maybe they’d want to check them out.

This is an extremely abbreviated version of this week’s music preview. To see even more shows—including those happening this and next Thursday—visit cltampa.com/music.

C The Currys With primarily an acoustic guitar and three part harmonies, Charlottesville-based Americana trio The Currys have been firestarters for nearly a decade. A three-state tour was almost cut short at the beginning of the month, when the group was exposed to COVID. Luckily, no one tested negative, everyone’s healthy, and The Currys close the tour in Tampa. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) Less Than Jake & Bowling For Soup w/ Cliffdiver/Doll Skin It was only nine months ago that Less Than Jake replaced Simple Plan on the long-awaited “Pop-Punk’s Still Not Dead” co-headlining tour with New Found Glory, which stopped at Jannus Live. The Gainesville ska punk group—now without Fueled By Ramen co-founder Vinnie Fiorello—returns to the same room on alongside Bowling For Soup, a band that played a massive part in the childhoods of most GenZ’ers by opening every episode of “Phineas and Ferb.” Cliffdiver and Doll Skin open. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) C Steely Dan Some might say that the Dan died when Walter Becker did in 2017. Sole surviving member Donald Fagen feels that way, and he low-key hates touring under the Steely Dan name without his partner beside him. Nonetheless, people gotta eat, so Fagen and company take an intimate turn when they play two different albums at this twonight St. Pete stand. Friday night, it’s 1976’s The Royal Scam all the way through, and on Saturday night, Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live! gets the live treatment all over again. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)

Firefall w/Orleans/Pure Prairie Every year, country-rock band Firefall hits the Ruth Eckerd stage, generally as a part of a nostalgia festival. Last year, it was slated to roll in with Poco and Pure Prairie League, but a major roadblock happened when Poco founding member Rusty Young died last April. Orleans—which replaced the fallen band on the bill last year—must have had a pretty solid reception, because the exact same lineup of country rockers from last year returns in 2022. Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater Iration w/Atmosphere/The Grouch Only two years following its initial opening, the St. Pete Pier recently nabbed an Urban

(Spa Beach Park, St. Petersburg) C The King Yellowman Show w/K’reema & The Sagittarius Band/Impulse Winston “Yellowman” Foster hasn’t had it easy throughout his life. But despite growing up in an orphanage, and a skin cancer diagnosis that caused the 66-year-old to lose part of his jaw, the reggae that put him on the map is what keeps him on the road. Joining him at Skipper’s this weekend is his daughter K’reema and the Sagittarius Band, plus Floridian world music trio Impulse. ((Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) C Keith Sweat Birthday Celebration w/Monica/Tevin Campbell/Tamar Braxton/112/Ginuwine/Silk Labeled as one of the godfathers of R&B, the Harlem native has had an extensive career in the genre, achieving milestones like six platinum albums, producing 15 Top 10 hits with songs like “Twisted”, “Nobody”, “Come and Get with Me” and “Make You Sweat,” in addition to being awarded the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry. Support artists on the birthday tour bill have seen just about the same amount of success, and everybody rolls into Tampa the day after Sweat’s 61st birthday. TUE 26

Rob Zombie w/Mudvayne/Static-X/ Powerman 5000 Break out your face paint and top hats for rock god and filmmaker

Rob Zombie. Illinois heavy-metal band Mudvayne—which co-headlines with the 57-year-old metal god—formed almost 30 years ago and rose to success in the mid’90s. Known for its face paint, wild stage presence and experimentation, it makes sense that the heavy metal band will join Mr. Zombie on a nationwide tour this summer as part of Mudwayne’s first gigs in about 12 years. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa) Spose w/Jarv Portland-bred rapper Spose spends much of his time on Twitter, “talking about tennis and the Celtics and Kanye while looking for self confidence,” but that won’t be the case at the Mug. The 37-yearold emcee–whose lyrics were once meant to be comedic—hasn’t put out new music in a minute, but after creating his 2017 Humans albums in one day, there could very well be new music when you wake up tomorrow. (Brass Mug, Tampa)

WED 27

C Kendrick Lamar w/Baby Keem/Tanna Leone Earlier this year, hip-hop fans across the world probably listened to two albums released on the same day: Kendrick Lamar’s double-LP, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers and Finally, New by Tampa Bay’s own They Hate Change. Local fans already got a chance to see Change, which just returned from a European tour, but Lamar—who won a Pulitzer for his last studio album, DAMN.— is in town this week. The only other Florida show is on July 24 at Rolling Loud in Miami, and depending on proximity clauses in the contracts of Rolling Loud artists, Lamar’s Tampa stop could be full of surprise guests besides Lamar’s cousin Baby Keem, who just played St. Petersburg in March, and Tanna Leone, who recently signed to Lamar’s pgLang imprint. I’m a cis woman in her 30s who lives on the East Coast. I’ve been in an LTR with the same cis man for 12 years. No issues there at all! But we are considering opening up our relationship and I have a question about my sexuality. Basically, I’m attracted to people with penises. PIV is the only sex that really arouses me—the only kind of sex I like to have or fantasize about—although I do enjoy everything that leads up to it. I’m that rare woman who comes easily during PIV and honestly prefers it over all things. So, although I am attracted to people regardless of what they look like, if I were to hook up with someone who didn’t have a penis, I would be disappointed. I hooked up with two women during group sex and I liked their breasts and kissing them, but I quickly realized I do not find vaginas sexy at all. So, what am I since not all people with penises are men? I ask because I don’t want to use a label on hook-up apps that’s transphobic in any way. I’m mostly attracted to people with penises, but I want non-binary people with dicks to slide into my DMs too. So, I am attracted to all men and non-binary people with penises (no matter how they present themselves). Is this messed up? I don’t know. I have searched for a term that describes this fixation on specific genitalia, but I have yet to find any. So, am I just straight? It seems some people think attraction and sexuality are separate from genitalia and anything else is transphobic, but for me, it’s the opposite. Dick or bust. I’ve also never been on a dating app, so I am not sure if classifying myself as straight would still leave me visible to non-binary folx looking for women. Maybe that’s true, and finding a nuanced label doesn’t really matter.—Limits About Bodies Expressed Lovingly & Sensitively

of asexual) phallophile (dick lover) in an ENM (ethically non-monogamous) LTR (long-term relationship) seeking masc-presenting and/or non-binary allosexual AMAB (assigned male at birth) phallus-havers-and-wanna-users for PIV. (And by the way, “phallophile” was the term you were searching for.) Or you could keep it simple, LABELS, and just say you’re straight. Which is what you are. You’re a heterosexual woman— you’re a cis woman who’s attracted to members of the opposite sex—and while you require dick and dicking, you’re open to sex partners who don’t identify as men so long as they 1. have dicks and 2. want to use them. And who knows? In addition to getting dicked down by cis men and nonbinary AMAB peeps, you might enjoy getting pegged down by cis women or AFAB non-binary peeps who 1. have a strap-on, 2. know how to use it, and 3. won’t ask you eat or touch their vaginas/front holes. All of the above could be included in your bio on whatever hook-up app you’re using. Oh, gee. Look at that. The less complicated option took longer to explain than the more complicated option. What a world. Anyway, LABELS, there’s nothing transphobic or gynophobic about clearly and respectfully stating who and what you’re looking for. Use a positive framing (what you want), not a negative one (what you don’t). Indeed, letting people who don’t have penises know not to waste their time on you—cis women, non-binary AFAB peeps, trans men who didn’t opt for bottom surgery, trans women who did—is a courtesy, not an insult. You might hear from some people who aren’t what you’re looking for, LABELS, but you aren’t obligated to respond.

You could make this complicated. You could describe yourself as an AFAB (assigned female at birth), cis-gender (not trans), femme-presenting (just what it sounds like) allosexual (opposite
