Multiple members of city council supported the proposal. “I think that’s a great idea,” coun cilman Guido Maniscalco said before asking about how much money for housing will be com ing from the city’s Community Redevelopment AgencyCouncilmanbudget.
Gudes also supported the idea, but also was wary of whether or not the money would actually be available for housing in March.

Carlson pointed out that former Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s administration tore down thousands of affordable housing units, and now the city finds itself in an affordable housing crisis. “I don’t look at five-and-a-half million dollar oppor tunity as crumbs, it was an option to give Council an idea to put a pin in that money amount until the rate study was done,” Bennett replied to Carlson.Prior to the council meeting, members of Tampa Bay Community Action Committee (TBCAC) had made a demand for millions in ARPA funding to be moved to housing. During the public comment portion, several members of TBCAC and others spoke out about how the rental crisis is affecting them and people they care
HOUSING
“It’s a theoretical risk, but I think it’s a good one and everyone agrees.”
uring a 2023 budget hearing last week, Tampa city staff and council members agreed to consider moving millions from solid waste to housing. After resident outcry about the need for more stable housing in Tampa, Chief of Staff John Bennett told council that the city could consider possibly moving up to $5.5 million of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to housing. Before Bennett made his suggestion, Stephanie Poynor, President of the Tampa Homeowners Association of Neighborhoods, pointed out that council could move the millions from solid waste to housing during public comment. “After listening to public comment and especially the feedback from [Mrs.] Poynor, we know that there’s $5.5 million in ARPA sitting in solid waste,” Bennett told council.
Bennett explained that around midway through the fiscal year, usually right after March, the city does a rate study. He said that

“So it’s a chance we’re taking?” Gudes asked.
but also said that more needs to be done to address affordable housing. “What you want to do is look at crumbs when we’ve been hearing for more than three years that affordable housing is a problem,” Carlson told Bennett.
“And if so, we could put a pin in that [money] saying that anything that can be recovered from that rate study would go to housing by the midterm of the fiscal year,” he said. Bennett added that he was “very confident” that the rate study in March would show that the $5.5 million would be available.

Councilman Bill Carlson appreciated the desire of the city to find more funds for housing,

Councilwoman Hurtak said the extra money for housing is encouraging, but that ideally, the city will find even more. She calculated that currently, around 7% of the city budget is going to housing, but getting that number to 10% would be even bet ter. “We need to find this extra money and I really appreciate Chief Bennett finding this $5.5 million from solid waste—I’m sorry, [Mrs.] Poynor—for finding it and chief Bennett agreeing, that this is a great way to add more money,” Hurtak said.
“Iabout.really respect the public for coming in at all ages and all demographics for sharing,” Bennett said. “That’s why staff is sitting here to listen in real time to the challenges that we’re all facing.”
The most recent challenge for resto ration comes mainly from needing more space to rebuild, which a property ease ment would provide. But the easement has to be allowed by 717 Parking, controlled by Jason and John Accardi, who own the parking lots surrounding Jackson House.

ast week at a Downtown Tampa Community Redevelopment Area meeting, members of the Jackson House Foundation said that obstacles won’t stand in the way of restoring the historic house.
The vision for the Jackson house is to restore it as a historic house, as well as an African American History Museum, Roberts said. He told the CRA that keeping the house in its exact spot is important because it is “one of the last vestiges of what was once a very vibrant African American neighborhood and there’s nothing left, and so telling that story is key.”
“But as we’ve all pointed out, the building is very vulnerable and time is certainly not on our side,” Roberts said.
Collins and the Tampa Bay History Center said that the rebuild will go on.
“The CRA board [membership] is the same as city council but it’s a totally separate entity that stands alone from the city and we have the resources to be able to help the Jackson

The Tampa Bay Times reported last month that after a year of negotiations, the Accardi brothers denied the foundation a 10-foot easement to meet fire code require ments for the rebuild. Roberts told the CRA that USF has also digitally docu mented the contents of the house, so the contents can be accurately installed in the event of renovations.
Councilman Bill Carlson said that he has advocated for the Jackson House since 2013. He motioned to have the property discussed at the meeting and said that the CRA, which has already allocated $1 million to the res toration of the house for 2023, has the special ability to help with the rebuild outside of the city budget.
The foundation has $3 million dollars in funding commitments to rebuild the house, but without the easement, the rebuild will cost more. Exact numbers are uncertain, but repre sentatives from the Tampa Bay History Center estimate it could cost around $4 million. City staff said it could cost more.

Foundation says obstacles won’t stop restoration of Tampa’s historic Jackson House.
Safety was a point of concern for Bob Buckhorn’s administration in 2014 as dif ferent community groups tried to preserve the house. “At the end of the day this is a building that needs to be saved and thanks to the new not for profit that has been set up to do that and the generosity of people like Jeff Vinik I believe it will be,” Buckhorn told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay after yesterday’s CRA meeting.

“The building is very vulnerable and time is certainly not on our side.”
Located just a block away from Tampa’s historic Union Station, the Jackson House, built in 1901 by Moses Jackson, stands in shambles and needs major renovations to survive. The historic rooming house sheltered Black visitors, including famous names like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who weren’t allowed to stay in other hotels due to segregation. Zelman was recently officially confirmed by city council as the new city attorney, but only after multiple city council members asked if the animosity between Mayor Jane Castor’s administration and council would stop now that Grimes was no longer in charge. But last week, City Communications Director Adam Smith said that Grimes is still working on staff, and that her last day is “tentatively” Sept. 16. Smith added that Grimes is being considered for working for the city in a new role after that.
DAMN, GINA: Looks like former Tampa City Attorney Gina Grimes (L) could be back in City Hall soon.
A familiar face could be headed back to Tampa City Hall.
“As part of her transition out of legal office, she has been looking into the prospect of the city creating an internal project manager type position to ensure accountability, efficiency, equity, etc. on the multiple major city projects in the works that overlap multiple city depart ments,” Smith wrote via email to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.
Earlier this year, CL reported that Grimes used her personal cellphone to communicate with an attorney who sued former council man John Dingfelder out of office, in part, for using a personal email. Grimes declined to represent Dingfelder in the lawsuit. Despite telling City Council members to not use their personal phones for city business, Grimes used hers to stay in regular contact with the attor ney who sued Dingfelder, Ethan Loeb, during hours of phone calls between December and March of this year, according to documents obtained by CL.
family circumstances, it is no longer feasible for me to relocate into the City of Tampa,” Grimes wrote in the memo announcing her resignation.
ormer Tampa City Attorney Gina Grimes resigned just over a month ago, and now the city says she’s a favorite for a new “manager type” position. Since her last official day as city attorney on Aug. 5 , Grimes has still been work ing at the city, serving in a four-week transition period as Andrea Zelman takes on the role.

“I know the mayor would love to have Gina in that role, but noth ing has been decided.”
When Grimes resigned in August, she said it was mainly because of bureaucratic rules, which require department heads to live within City of Tampa limits. Grimes, appointed to city attor ney by Castor in 2019, is currently a resident of Pinellas County and has not lived in Tampa dur ing her time as city attorney. “Due to personal
When CL asked where the images and PDFs were, the city attorney’s office said that’s how they appeared on Grime’s phone when it was scanned as part of the request made by CL. In Grimes’ communications with Michelini, information from the texts was missing that he had sent to Grimes on Oct. 5, two days before Grimes said the city would not represent Dingfelder.
Grimes formerly served as chief assistant city attorney and city council attorney for the city from 1985-2004. Before returning to the city in 2019, she worked as a land-use attorney with Hill Ward Henderson.
Grimes also used her personal cell to discuss a property in Tampa city limits with Steven Michelini, a consultant for developer Jon Lum.
“I have worked with Gina Grimes for over two decades. She is an incredible attorney who has built the best law firm in Tampa. An amazing team that continues to serve all of our varied community needs,” Castor said when Grimes resigned. “I am grateful for her service and friendship. No doubt she will continue to follow her servant heart.”
Details about any potential new position for Grimes—including which Sunshine Laws she would be subject to—are still unclear.

he federal trial seeking accountability for the death of Andrew Joseph III began Monday, Sept. 12, and several activists from Florida and around the country arrived in Downtown Tampa to support the Joseph fam ily. While jury selection occurred inside Judge Mary Scriven’s courtroom at the Sam Gibbons Federal Courthouse, the activists gathered outside. There, they decried the actions of Hillsborough County Sheriff (HCSO) Deputies, who detained and removed Joseph against his will from Student Day the Florida State Fair in 2014.
T
Andrew Joseph’s mother, Deanna Joseph, also decried qualified immunity when she spoke to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about the trial on Aug. 31. She said that immunity has made it difficult for the family to receive any information from HCSO about their son’s death. Because of qualified immunity, only one officer has been subpoenaed for the trial— HCSO Corporal Mark Clark.

Jones added that the trial will display the disregard for Andrew Joseph’s life, and also highlight the way in which qualified immunity harms victims of law enforcement miscon duct. Several speakers sounded off while Joseph’s parents were inside for the jury selection. They focused on the fact that quali fied immunity is not a law, but an unjust legal principle that families like the Josephs encounter when they try to get justice for police abuse.

Unqualified immunity
Several local activists helped organize the rally today, including members of Restorative Justice Coalition, Dream Defenders, Tampa Bay Community Action Committee and local faith groups. Pastor Clayton Coward of the Lakeland activist group Poor and Minority Justice Association called for unity from activ ists of all kinds.
Some kids were out of control at the event, HCSO says, but the Josephs say their son wasn’t involved in the alleged bad behavior. Still, sher iff’s deputies removed the 14-year-old from the fair, and didn’t notify his parents. While trying to make his way home, Joseph was struck by a car on Interstate-4 and killed.
But the activists pointed out that at least three more officers were involved in Joseph’s death, and that qualified immunity has shielded them from being involved in the trial.
She said HCSO has “deepened the wound” of the Joseph family by drag ging out the trial process for the past several years with its co-defendant, the Florida State Fair Authority. She added that the coalition of activists hopes for as large as a monetary settle ment as possible for the family. The settlement would help show law enforcement they can’t treat Black families this way, not just in Tampa, but elsewhere as well.
“They don’t get to steal the lives of our people, they don’t get to steal the lives of our children and not be held accountable,” BLM Grassroots Director Melina Abdullah said. “Accountability means that when wrong is done, someone must pay.”
Abdullah said that activists from Michigan, Boston, California, Alabama and Florida were at the rally in support, and that most of them would remain for the entirety of the trial, which is set to run until Sept. 22.

Despite those laws, Marlowe sounded off about his disdain for public input and for those who want transparency from his government. Marlowe called public comment “garbage.”
“I know we’ve got at least one person in this room tonight that is involved in that and I will let them remain nameless,” Marlowe said. “But I know who they are and I know who the others are.”

After the meeting Jones told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that the mayor’s comments were “very concerning and distressful” for his mental health.
But video from a March incident shows NPR code enforcement officer Erik Jay—who retired from NPRPD before moving to code enforcement—on site at a property talking to residents. In the video, the occupants said Jay arrived when they weren’t home and searched the property, and said they failed to provide them with a paper warrant.
New Port Richey mayor says people seeking public records should ‘go away.’
Port Richey were peaceful, largely because of Jones’ work with the city and the police to keep them that way. During one protest, a drunk white man attacked a woman protester. Jones broke up the fight, and when the police arrived, they falsely accused him of battery on a law enforcement officer. During the trial Nicholas Rickus, the cop who accused Jones, couldn’t get his story straight or show on video where Jones struck him.

“We do not conduct searches without war rants,” Driscoll said, referring to a resident named Judith Allen who had accused code enforcement of attempting to enter another property without a warrant, and of serving warrants that don’t have the name or address listed, which is illegal.

Michelle Wojciechowski also criticized New Port Richey city officials during the meeting. Wojciechowski, who is Jewish, recently had her home broken into by police and code enforcement. During the searching of her house, body camera footage obtained by CL shows an NPR PD officer making a Holocaust joke. When Wojciechowski’s home was raided, the warrant the code enforcement and police used did not contain her name, her correct address, or correct property parcel number. Meanwhile, Florida state law says that police can only search “the property described in the warrant or the person named.”

When CL made a records request for those text communications, the city decided that it would charge Driscoll’s hourly rate of $150 for his public records, and Mann’s would cost $67, her estimated hourly rate. When this reporter said it was an unreasonable amount to charge for public records, City Clerk Judy Meyers said that those charges would stand because the public officials would have to access the public records themselves.

It’s not just residents having trouble getting transparency when it comes to the behavior of certain city departments. Both City Manager Manns and Driscoll have chosen to use per sonal cell phones when communicating city business, which are public record regardless of where they exist.

It’s true that the court has decided many controversial cases over the last 220 years. But there’s a reason fewer Americans than ever— especially Democrats and independent —profess confidence in the justices now.
It’s not just that a few decisions didn’t go their way. It’s that most of these justices were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote and confirmed by senators who represent a minority of the popu lation. And they did it while lecturing about “judicialMorerestraint.”thanthat, the crisis in confidence stems from the growing recognition that five or six members of the Supreme Court are the far right’s bulwark against democracy itself— their means of imposing an agenda without publicWhensupport.Justice
Most obnoxiously, Cannon ordered the FBI to stop using those documents—including the more than 100 classified documents Trump had taken from the White House—as part of its investi gation, a remarkable mandate from a judge in a civil proceeding considering that the search that obtained these records was approved and overseen by a fed eralCannon, magistrate.trying

Brett Kavanaugh tried to minimize the enormity of overturning Roe, he argued that he and his colleagues hadn’t out lawed abortion but rather returned the issue to the states, where democracy could function as the founders intended.
This is why Americans don’t trust Trumpified courts.

And the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which will hear the inevitable appeal, is one of the most conservative in the country.

Roberts isn’t that naive.

“I note that Plaintiff filed this lawsuit in the Fort Pierce division of this District, where only one federal judge sits: Judge Aileen Cannon, who Plaintiff appointed in 2020,” Judge Donald Middlebrooks wrote in April. Middlebrooks dismissed what he called Trump’s “200-page political manifesto.”
Of course, revanchist judges pre-date Trump; the conservative movement to capture the judiciary has been in progress for decades.
We’ve seen them for the political hacks they are.
And the more exposure we have to any of Donald Trump’s judges, the more reason we have to be skeptical of all of them.
The court had just green-lit Texas’ Roe v. Wade workaround and blocked President Joe Biden from reversing a Trump-era immigration policy. In the following year, it overturned the right to abortion and invented constitutional the ories to gut environmental regulations, obliviate gun policies, and allow states to execute innocent men because they’d been given shitty lawyers.

The Presidential Records Act is explicit that the documents Trump hoarded belong to the fed eral government, and any lawsuits involving the PRA must be filed in Washington, D.C. Cannon ignored that. Cannon decided he might, should the special master she planned to appoint decide that the records the law says belong to the government don’t actu ally belong to the government.

For the next few weeks, the newly-opened restaurant will offer a somewhat-limited menu and gradually add dishes as it transitions into full service. Other popular appetizers include pan-charred shishito peppers, tofu fries, “dev ilish” crab balls, buffalo tempeh, and kimchi-fried rice with Just Egg. Good Intentions and Golden Dinosaurs co-owner Audrey Dingeman tells Creative Loafing Tampa bay that as its menu expands, so will its operating hours (although it may not ever accept reservations.)

he folks behind Tampa Bay vegan hotspots Black Radish Grocer, Golden Dinosaur and Nah Dogs are ready to give birth to their culinary lovechild. After months of buildout, and a recent weekend of friends and family trial runs, St. Petersburg vegan restaurant Good Intentions opened to the public on Wednesday. The restaurant—located at 1900 1st Ave. S in the Grand Central District—will be open at 5 p.m. again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with availability happening on a first-come-firstserved basis. Courtney Weil of Courtney’s Cafe and Catering took over the former Ground Foods space just a few months ago, and now offers both catering and dine-in services in Seminole Heights. Its large American menu is sprinkled with Latin, Asian and Italian influences, as popular offerings include stacked charcuterie spreads, chicken and waffles with candied bacon, Spanish-stuffed steak, rosemary-roasted pork loin and stuffed mushrooms.
Seminole Heights’ Rene’s Mexican Kitchen launches new $2 breakfast tacos
Seminole Heights has a new breakfast fix, and all you need is two bucks. Located at 4414 N Nebraska Ave. in Seminole Heights, Rene’s Mexican Kitchen recently launched its break fast menu stacked with loaded tacos ($2 each), burritos and chilaquiles (tortilla chips tossed in a dry chile salsa and topped with protein, crema, queso fresco, red onions and avocado.)
The food trailer is also getting ready for its exclusive Mexican Independence Day Dinner, happening on Saturday, Sept. 17. Ribeye steak tacos, Huitlacoche—a delectable corn fungus— chicharron prensado, smoked beef short-ribs and jumbo prawn tacos are on the one-night-only menu. These dishes are meant to highlight less mainstream ingredients in traditional Mexican cuisine— something that Chef Rene does quite well on his everyday menu. This ticketed event costs $68 per person and will take place at Southern Brewing & Winery, down the street from the Seminole Heights food trailer. For more information on this popular Mexican spot and next week’s exciting event, keep up with its Facebook page (@renesmexicankitchenofficial), where its specials are posted every week as well.

Black Radish’s Cuban kitchen pop-up this month
Rene’s Mexican Kitchen now serves breakfast from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesday-Sunday every week. After those hours, the popular taco trailer switches to its normal lunch and dinner menu of chile rellenos, loaded chorizo and shrimp tacos and pork belly bur ritos, alongside many other Mexican specialties.
Tampa’s resident vegan grocery is known for working with other local businesses—like House of Vegano, Lucky Tigre and Oh My Cod Vegan Seafood Co.—and its latest collabora tion happens on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Black Radish’s Cuban kitchen pop-up will take place at Courtney’s Cafe—located at 6428 N Florida Ave. inside the former Grounds Food Cafe in Seminole Heights— and offer an exclusive menu of Cactus Hat oyster mushroom “asado,” black beans and rice, guava y queso puffs, plant-based picadillo and vaca frita, and vegan mocktails, among many other traditional Cuban dishes. This Wednesday night pop-up runs from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and requires an RSVP reservation by tex ting (813) 467-6496 (please include name, party size, date and time.) Black Radish sources a lot of its vegan goods locally, so expect a few ingre dients featured in its upcoming pop-up to be from other Tampa Bay-based small businesses.
After 10 years, Ybor City’s Buffalo Wild Wings is now closed
It’s unclear exactly why the Ybor BW3 shuttered. The spot was originally opened by its previous owners, Diversified Restaurant Holdings, in 2012 with a 10 year lease. At the time, the company boasted that the new res taurant would be one of the largest ever for the franchise, with a 235-seat capacity. In 2018, the chicken wing chain was sold to Arby’s for nearly $3 billion.
Ruggs and Lynn opened CellarMasters at 1005 1st Ave. N in spring of 2020, and was imme diately met with great reviews and warm local reception. The bottle shop focuses on natural wines and beers in addition to non-alcoholic fare, but also offers a small menu of locally-sourced cheeses, charcuterie and small plates. Wine can be purchased by the glass or bottle, as prices are meant to be as affordable as possible. According to its website, a majority of CellarMasters’ stock costs less than $20 a bottle.
A St. Pete wine bar and bottle shop recently received national recognition, and it’s only been open since 2020. Last week, Wine Enthusiast magazine named The Burg’s CellarMasters as one of the best bottle shops in the country. Nate Siegel, co-owner of Hyde Park’s popular American restaurant Willa’s, shared kind words with Wine Enthusiast about the St. Pete bottle shop. No other Tampa Bay wine shops appear on the“Thelist.vibe of the bar is your uncle’s basement in the 1970s in Iowa, with hip-hop music on the speakers. There’s no food, but every first Monday they host a pop up, usually with a taco truck in the back, which is a favorite of industry friends,” he tells the magazine. He continues to shout out CellarMasters’ owners Ryan Ruggs and Kory
The building’s owner told CL that her ten ant—which owns nearby Showbar dueling Piano bar and Tangra—intends to put a new bar in the space. City of Tampa records show that the bar will be called “Southern Belle.” Chris Lenahan, who owns Showbar and Tangra, told CL that ownership is not yet ready to talk about the concept.—Colin Wolf
The location has been erased from the compa ny’s website, and the Google business page now says “permanently closed. Phone calls to the restaurant from CL also went unanswered.
The burger joint’s motto is “We’re Reclaiming Classic,” and Benson Hospitality’s Corey Rose says that the burgers “are the perfect blend of ground chuck, brisket, and short rib that don’t need anything other than classic yel low American cheese to make it one of the best burgers you’ve ever tasted.” Black Cattle Burger Co. is now open from 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday-Wednesday and 11 a.m.-3 a.m. from Thursday-Saturday. Follow its new Instagram page at @blackcattleburgers for the latest news on downtown’s newest burger spot.

With the death of the Ybor B-Dubs, Tampa residents will now have to trek over the bridge, or to either the Brandon, South Tampa or Oldsmar locations to stack up those Blazin’ Rewards.
Taco and burrito options include steak, cho rizo, slow-cooked beef brisket or bacon with eggs, as well as scrambled tofu, sundried tomatoes, plant-based mozzarella and baby spinach as the lone vegan and vegetarian option. All tacos are served with charred tomatillo green salsa and fiery brick-orange chile de árbol salsa.
Wine Enthusiast magazine lists St. Pete’s CellarMasters as one of the best bottle shops in the country
The popular downtown wine shop is open from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and noon-7 p.m. on Sundays.
Lynn and their large selection of fairly-priced FrenchWinewines.Enthusiast spoke to various wine, drink and food industry professionals to create its extensive, countrywide list. CellarMasters Wine Bar and Bottle Shop joins other busi nesses like Jackson’s Corkscrew Wine and Spirits, Miami’s Happy Wine Calle Ocho and New Orleans’ Keife & Co. as some of the best wine shops in the South.

f anyone in the Tampa Bay area still has their frayed Blockbuster card, there’s a Pinellas Park business created with you in mind. Adorned with those familiar yellow walls and blue carpet, several shelves worth of DVDs and movie posters at every corner, Beerbusters is a nostalgia-driven space that appeals to film buffs, craft beer-lovers and nerdsBeerbusters, alike. recentlyopened at 6836 N Park Blvd., is stocked with hundreds of movies, a craft beer bar, a kitchen that will dish out movie snacks, and lots of seat ing. There’s even a “haunted hallway” to the bathroom that features old horror movie posters and a handmade coffin shelf that holds a multitude of spooky films available for rent. Beerbusters passed its final inspection about two weeks ago and officially soft opened on Friday, Sept. 2 after almost two years in the making.
the following weekend on Sept. 24. Beerbusters t-shirts, magnets, pins and other merchandise will be available for sale alongside its craft brews, DVD rentals, and movie snacks.
Beerbusters was initially located in Largo but after starting the opening process, Dieli says the city wouldn’t approve his business because it was in close proximity to a church-owned prop erty. Largo municipal code prohibits the sale of alcohol within 300 feet of any church, countylicensed child care facility or public school

“There’s not really a theme with the movies that I’ll rent out, everything is just going to be a little nerdy and feature the things I’m really into,” co-owner William Dieli, one of the store’s two employ ees, tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “I really focus on movies that I like person ally, because they’re easier to talk about.” Dieli operates the newly-opened Pinellas Park business with his girl friend Rachel Smith, who crafted Beerbusters’ haunted hallway alongside other kitschy cor ners of the space.

The last remaining Blockbuster in the country, located in Bend, Oregon, can now be rented as an Airbnb. And although Dieli is fol lowing in the footsteps of his previous employer,
Dieli tells CL that the movie rental aspect is secondary to the craft beer, movie snacks, games and chill atmosphere that Beerbusters provides. The store’s massive movie stock mainly came from Dieli and his family member’s per sonal DVD collections. The hundreds of films range from mid-2000s comedies to superhero action movies and complete seasons of popular TV shows. It will cost $1 a day to rent any movie in the store, but he also plans to offer a movie pass, where folks can rent an unlimited amount of movies for $10 a month. And yes, you’ll be charged $1 for every day that you don’t return the rented Beerbusters’movie.“Grayskull” kitchen—a homage to the popular fantasy roleplaying game— will dish out movie snacks like popcorn, hot dogs and pizza rolls. The bar’s tap list features local brews alongside canned and bottled imports, wines and seltzers. After his business is fully up and running, Dieli also plans to expand the menu to offer more made-to-order dishes.

Featured actors include Aaron Dismuke, known for work in “My Hero Academia,” “Fullmetal Alchemist” and “Dr. Stone” and Ryan Bartley, who voices characters in “Hunter x Hunter,” “Demon Slayer” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” Actors Bryson Baugus, Chris Guerrero, Jill Harris and Dallas Reid will also be Caruthersfeatured.saidthe intention is to make this an annual event, so Anime St. Pete can continue bringing the city the anime hub it’s never had.

Tickets to Anime St. Pete happening Sept. 17-18 at the Coliseum in downtown start at $28 and are available now. There’s a $28 single-day pass and $43 for the weekend. VIP passes are available for $128, which give early access both days, access to the VIP party Saturday night and a gift bag. Prices increase by $5 on Sept. 16.
And to the haters asking why, the rave’s spiel replies, “It’s dumb just come have fun!”
The 18 and up, “rain or shine,” show will open doors at 9 p.m. featuring ogre-themed DJ sets, green glow sticks and a gathering place for like-minded, ‘Shrek’loving individuals. Though a current nationwide phenomenon, the Shrekthemed celebration began as a birthday party for North Carolina native rapper and known meme lord, Ka5ash, in Los Angeles. What I can tell you is that Cregger makes masterful use of light and darkness, and he deftly navigates some cramped confines to generate maximum unease. He writes with a propulsive flair that keeps his movie moving forward with purpose even as you struggle to acclimate to its slippery narrative slope.
AIR-BRB: Tess (Georgina Campbell) should’ve walked away from that rental immediately.
Facing career suicide and financial ruin, AJ remembers that he owns property in Detroit, which makes you immediately think that this is going to become some horror movie about white male privilege and violent comeuppance
when the prodigal asshole returns home. If only “Barbarian” were that easy to describe or evenEventually, define.
Part of the joy of discovery in “Barbarian” is not having a clue about the plot of “Barbarian” prior to the movie starting. And part of the rea son that “Barbarian” proves so confounding is that even after watching it, you still don’t know a damn thing about the plot.
cltampa.com | SEPTEMBER 15-21, 2022 | 45
But then “Barbarian” pivots unexpectedly from the ravaged residential ruins of Michigan to the sun-kissed beaches of California to suddenly focus on AJ (Justin Long), a schmuck-y TV director whose career gets #MeToo’d. You know you’re not supposed to feel bad for AJ because he says stupid things, like “it took some convinc ing,” when asked if his sexual tryst with the actress accusing him of rape was consensual.
By John W. Allman
This is a movie that opens on Tess (Georgina Campbell) as she arrives at her Airbnb rental in a terrible neighborhood outside of Detroit, only to find it occupied by Keith (Bill Skarsgård). Keith acts so weird and awkward that you immediately think, “OK, this is going to be some kind of crazy timeshare slasher flick like Dave Franco’s not-scary-at-all ‘The Rental’ or Brandon Christensen’s considerably more unhinged ‘Superhost.’”
Best of all, it’s not giving anything away to share that the deranged third act of “Barbarian” includes some of the most insane and stom ach-churning practical effects work in recent memory, and for at least the diehard horror fans, that right there is enough. For everyone else, you’re just going to have to trust me. “Barbarian” may not make a lick of sense, but it is brutal AF and entertaining as hell.

C Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band This is one of those rare years where both surviving Beatles will have performed in Florida. Paul McCartney caused tears and adrenaline to flow in Orlando back in May, and Ringo Starr’s very sold-out, thrice-postponed Clearwater show finally drops into Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday. The gig was supposed to happen over the summer, but Edgar Winter and Steve Lukather—both members of the current AllStarr Band—came down with COVID-19. Also included in the 82-year-old goofy one’s regi ment is Hamish Stuart of Average White Band, Men At Work’s Colin Hay (who has already been to Clearwater twice this year) as well as Toto touring saxophonist Warren Ham, and David Lee Roth drummer Gregg Bissonette. It relaunches at this listening room show along side some of Indian Rocks Beach’s sexiest collection of goth-rock surfers, Fayroy. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City)
Greg Koch A guitarist’s guitarist, Milwaukee native Koch has a never-ending bag of tricks that borrows from Albert King and Hendrix. The Fixx For a rock group that recently celebrated 40 years since inception, The Fixx is still very intact. Delta Heavy w/Bensely It’s been a productive summer for UK-based EDM duo Ben Hall and Simon James, aka Delta Heavy. There have been gigs in Australia, a video for “Heaven,” plus this U.S. tour. While “Heaven”—a new single with Jem Cooke—is not ultra upbeat, it would probably make a really great show closer if it weren’t so new. It’s less dubstep-oriented, and more of a nod to synthpop, if anything. (The Ritz, Ybor City)

Rhythm & Brews By The Bay: Gin Blossoms w/Andrew Copeland After a two-year hiatus and a slight name change, The Florida Aquarium finally brings back one of Tampa’s best philanthropic parties. Gin Blossoms is no stranger to the area, as the five-piece band brought its notable songs like “Hey Jealousy” and “Til I Hear it From You” to St. Pete’s Palladium Theater just last fall. And although the alt-rock band has released a slew of music since the early ‘90s, some of its most popular singles are still from its 1992 LP, New Miserable Experience. Opening is Ken Block and Andrew Copeland of Florida-based band Sister Hazel, who will kick things off with an acoustic set. (Florida Aquarium, Tampa)—Kyla Fields

We’re hoping Fjshwjfe’s Kate Magruder makes it onstage for a performance of album highlight “Hole In the Heart” at this show headlined by German heavyweight of the genre Pink Turns Blue, which is on the road supporting its 2021 album, Tainted . Just that song and the album’s lead single “I’d Be Orange” are out in the ether, but a press release promises the most dynamic,

C Alicia Keys Hard Rock’s event center very quickly proved itself as a serious con cert venue, and some show announcements continue to bolster this newfound reputation. In 2020, Grammy award-winning R&B singer Keys made plans to headline Hard Rock’s 1,500 capacity venue. One pandemic and two epony mous studio albums later, the badass behind “You Don’t Know My Name” finally arrives for the third-to-last stop on her world tour. The show is long sold-out, so either go have a great time, or forever stare at overpriced resale tickets on StubHub. (Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa)—KF

According to ABC News, fewer and fewer people these days do want to be teachers. There are 300,000 teacher and school staff vacancies in the United States right now, a situation the Washington Post describes as “catastrophic,” with red states and Trump counties experiencing the worst shortages. Which should come as no sur prise to anyone who’s been paying attention, as red states and rural areas are overrun with precisely

But to find them you’re going to have to get on the apps, TACO, which may mean getting out of your small town.

the kind of deranged Trump supporters and other assorted conspiracy theorists who keep attacking teachers and school librarians and administrators.
Schooled me once
Why would anyone want to be a teacher these days? Outraged parents, shit pay, shittier gover nors, racist demagoguery, book bans, “don’t say gay” laws… and on top of all that, not being free to look for sex where everyone else does these days—on the apps—because you might get spot ted by a parent who is also looking for sex on the apps and then get attacked at a school board meeting that makes the local news and goes viral and then have to endure a month of death threats after getting dragged on Libs of TikTok and Fox News.
wondered whether you might prefer a woman to a man, seeing as you never really cared for dick.
There is more to this week’s Savage Love. To read the entire column, go to savage.love. I’m a 38-year-old cis het woman who is also a public high school teacher in a small town. After a string of unsatisfying relationships in my 20s, I realized that I’ve only experienced sexual plea sure without a partner. Despite being excited by the idea of partnered sex, once there’s a dick inside me, I hate it. Only one thing still seemed appeal ing: receiving oral sex. I’d love that with someone skilled. By age 33, I gave up dating since finding a partner only interested in going down on me seemed both impossible and selfish. I put all my energy into my career, my family, and my com munity. After years of fighting the fascism that is gaining hold in our public schools, I’m burnt out and my standard self-care routines aren’t cut ting it. I’m considering seeking companionship once again. Is there an easy way to find a partner interested in eating me out but not (or only rarely) anything else? I know the best options are the apps but there are parents as well as former students on those. I already have a target on my back as a liberal teacher. I can’t afford to get caught seeking sex online and the time and energy to date before disclosing my sexual preference sounds exhausting.
But there are shortages of teachers in more progressive places too, TACO, which means you could easily get a job in a big city in a blue state. Not only would you be less likely to be spotted on the apps by a parent with a kid in your school in a blue state (because there a lot more people on the apps in big cities), you would also be far less likely to be attacked by a parent who did spot you on an app. (Less likely to get attacked, more likely to get licked.) And just as the gov ernors of blue states think you should be able to teach about, oh, slavery and redlining and segrega tion and Jim Crow (and the Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese intern ment camps during WWII and the Trail of Tears and on and on), most blue state governors would be fine with you getting your pussy licked—on your own time, by other consenting adults—if that’s what you want.
Hoping to get some tips from other teachers, I shared your email on Twitter. Suggestions ranged from getting on FetLife, which can be a problem atic place, to checking out—and perhaps posting on—the r/RandomActsOfMuffDive subreddit on Reddit. And more than a few of my followers
Being a gay dude, however, I know plenty of people who are attracted to men but don’t enjoy getting fucked. (Some guys are tops, some guys are sides.) Luckily for you, TACO, there are straight and bi men out there who only want to eat pussy. I’ve heard from scores of them over the years. Some had severe erectile dysfunction and preferred succeeding at cunnilingus to failing at vaginal intercourse; others were straight male submissives who wanted to orally service a woman without getting anything in return; and more than a few were men who loved eating pussy and somehow wound up married to women who hated oral sex and these men wanted to find women to go down on—and just go down on—outside their relation ships, with their wives’ permission (in some cases) or without it (in most cases).
