“We went everywhere with Hugh,” she said, noting trips across Asia, South America, and Europe. I asked if there was a favorite place for her.
MaShay spent the bulk of the ‘90s in England, creating Deep House and U.K. garage with DJs such as Joey Negro (now Dave Lee), Artful Dodger, and Thunderpuss. While she was performing as Pepper MaShay, she still worked and toured at the same time as “Sister Jean,” and even went on two international tours with “House, MD” star Hugh Laurie, who’s also, appar ently, a blues musician.

o say that Pride on The River’s headliner, Pepper MaShay, is a Dance music Diva is both true and misleading. While she’s best known for her song “Dive In The Pool,” featured on “Queer as Folk,” MaShay (born Jean McClain) has also been a studio musician for over 40 years, recording with everyone from Whitney Houston to Mick Jagger to Phish under her other moniker, “Sister Jean.”

“It would have to be Ukraine. I became like a promoter of that country. This was in 2013-2014, right before and during [the annexation of] Crimea. And I would ask the young people, ‘What are your aspirations in life?,” MaShay explained. “And they would tell me, ‘We want to be able to have our own freedom, we want to be able to decide our destiny and not be worried about our homeland…and I would take that message back to Twitter to let [people] know that those people over there, we need to help them.”
While many celebrities use Twitter as a way to connect with fans or promote their work, MaShay’s Twitter (@peppermashay) is almost exclu sively political.

This will be MaShay’s second Tampa Pride event in two years, after performing at Tampa’s 2021 Pride parade. While MaShay loves Florida, Florida hasn’t been kind to the LGBTQ+ community over the past two years. With the “Don’t Say Gay” bill now in effect and the ban on trans youth healthcare in full swing, I asked Pepper what she would say if she was stuck in an elevator with Ron DeSantis.

MaShay, who is a part of the LBGTQ+ community, sees the current Republican party as one the rejects the multiculturalism that it rooted in dance music.
“Twitter gave me a voice,” she said, noting that before the social media network, she was active at emailing whitehouse.gov and calling politicians. To MaShay, there is no difference between politics and dance music. Dance music has always been blacker and browner and queerer than most spaces and has often blended different types of music together.
It is this spirit of collaboration that MaShay loves about dance music, and is excited to debut new tracks for her Pride on The River Set. This year, MaShay will be performing with Cuban DJ Marisol Musick, who brings in Latin, reggaeton, bachata, and tribal music to the tracks. (“It’s like Bad Bunny,” MaShay tells me.)

Last year, you were part of the inaugural Pride on The River. What are some of your favorite parts about last year? What are some things that are new for this year that you’re excited to see?
Are you going more Clovers or Torros?

his year, local performer Brianna Summers will host Pride on The River’s Drag Brunch and head down the river to liven up the Riverwalk and also take the stage at the Riverside Festival happening at the Armature Works pier. We sat down with Ms. Summers to hear about this year’s plans.
T
Hello Brianna Summers! First, for people who might not know you, would you mind telling us a bit about yourself and where people might find you?
So last year, it was really exciting to be a part of Tampa Pride on The River because it was the first of its kind in the country. We have the first ever Pride Boat parade, right here in Tampa Bay, where [we] have the biggest boat parades in the country for Gasparilla any and all of the sporting events. So for us to have our own parade was really amazing. I love seeing those hundreds and hundreds of people and pride flags all down the river… to look out and see people you don’t know cheering and then see people you do know and you’re there as a community…it was just such a great feeling. The whole day was just so magical.
By Caroline DeBruhl
And I’m excited to do it again this year! I know we have some new things– I can’t really disclose what some new things are—but we’re hoping the boat parade is bigger. I know that our brunch is going to be changing

feel connected to your fate as Fortuna’s wheel spins.
Dear
Oracle, I have been doing this criminal Justice and prison work for trans prisoners for a while, and I’m feeling super burnt out. I feel like part of it is that I hav en’t been engaging with my creative stuff enough. I have been thinking about shifting to take what I have learned about the world in this space and turn it into a play or a story. Should I try this and possibly try a creative career? LOLoosing My Shit
Dear LOL, I’m so sorry you’re experiencing burnout at your job. Over the past two years, I’ve answered many questions about burnout, and the Eight of Swords is a common card that pops up. It’s a card that represents the type of depression where you feel like there is no escape. You’re stuck here. You aren’t—at least Tarotly speaking. You can break out of your sword cage if need be. You mentioned that this burnout might be connected to creative neglect, and I agree. The Waxing Gibbous in my deck (Uusi’s “Pagan Otherworlds”) is a card about re-prioritizing and taking stock of where you’re at and where you want to be. Pair it with the nostalgic love of Six of Cups, and you can see what was important to you when you were younger. Was it your creativity? Did you use to write stories or plays in your youth or college? Did you journal or write poetry when you had emotions to navigate?Thatfeeling of being trapped and that childlike long ing comes to a head with the Wheel of Fortune. My deck shows a bear, a lion, and a stag looking up at the wheel, which suggests tapping into your wild, unbridled side and connecting to your truest self. This will help you
SOUL, SWIMMING A SPECIAL PRIDE ON THE RIVER READING.
If you do leave your criminal justice work, there’s a chance that you’ll feel quite a bit of guilt from it, like you’re abandoning your duty. I don’t know if this job is your fate or if a creative path is one for you, but I don’t think you have to choose just yet.
By Caroline DeBruhl
CARDS: WAXING GIBBOUS, SIX OF CUPS, EIGHT OF SWORDS, WHEEL OF FORTUNE (ALL REVERSED)
However, the Wheel of Fortune also means karma and duty. Many people working in human rights do end up burned out because their work does feel like a karmic duty—and it may feel “selfish” to leave it.
22 | SEPTEMBER 22-28, 2022 | cltampa.com
And while the journey is necessary, it’s important to keep a level head about things. The Six of Swords can encounter some chopping waters, so you need to be realistic about things, which means if a modeling deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Find a lawyer you trust and go over any contracts you get with them. Understand that for many creative fields (music, modeling, writing, etc.) the people on the top make their money because they are selling you as a product. People may say some fucked-up things about your body so if you’ve ever struggled with body dysmorphia in the past, modeling might exacerbate it. If you can afford a thera pist, I highly recommend getting one before you start.
I do suggest you start writing your stories or your play immedi ately. You might have to play around your schedule a bit to figure out when you work best (before or after work)
Newness is the theme of this spread. The New Moon card wel comes you to the dark of creation, that black sea where all ideas spring forth. It’s a time for new beginnings and transformations, which is what you’re looking for, and you might find that relocating to NYC is just the new beginning that you need.
At the same time, I also recommend therapy and what Julia Cameron called “morning pages,” which is when you write three pages by hand every morning. It’s essential to do all three pages because it’s hard to bullshit for more than a page and a half. What starts out as bitching about your job suddenly becomes a subcon scious dive into your motivations to serve, which is helpful when trying to rediscover your wild heart.
A PROUD SUPPORTER OF PRIDE ON THE RIVER
But try to commit time daily, even if it’s just half an hour to start with. If you have saved up vacation days, start taking one a month solely for creative projects. (I liked taking Mondays off.) Guard this time.
Dear Oracle, I feel like I’m only living half of my life. My part ner and I have been thinking of moving to NYC to be closer to certain industries and creative people. Andrew Joseph’s mother, Deanna Joseph, also decried qualified immunity when she spoke to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about the trial on Aug. 31. She said that immunity has made it diffi cult for the family to receive any information from HCSO about their son’s death. Because of qualified immunity, only one officer has been subpoenaed for the trial—HCSO Corporal Mark Clark.

Jones added that the trial will display the disregard for Andrew Joseph’s life, and also highlight the way in which qualified immunity harms victims of law enforcement misconduct. everal speakers sounded off while Joseph’s par ents were inside for the jury selection. They focused on the fact that qualified immunity is not a law, but an unjust legal principle that families like the Joseph’s encounter when they try to get justice for police abuse.

Under questioning from the Joseph fam ily legal team, Sergeant Anthony took said that before the 2014 fair he had reviewed all local, state and federal laws that might apply to the event. But under questioning from Chris Anulewicz, an attorney representing the Joseph family, the former officer said he didn’t agree with state laws about child detention. Anulewicz read straight from Florida Statute 985, specifi cally section 985.03, which defines what taking a child into custody means.
“Hillsborough County Sheriffs disregarded, devalued and criminalized him,” said Tabatha Jones Jolivet of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles. “That is why we’re here.”
During day four of the federal trial for the wrongful death of Andrew Joseph III, a law enforcement expert testified that Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies violated the U.S. Constitution and Florida State Law.
“‘Taken into custody’ means the status of a child immediately when temporary physi cal control over the child is attained by a person authorized by law, pending the child’s release, detention, placement, or other disposi tion as authorized by law,” the statute reads.
Some kids were out of control at the event, HCSO says, but the Josephs say their son wasn’t involved in the alleged bad behavior. Still, sher iff’s deputies removed the 14-year-old from the fair, and didn’t notify his parents. While trying to make his way home, Joseph was struck by a car on Interstate-4 and killed.
Joseph III was taken into custody and ejected for allegedly running through the fair.
While on the stand, Clark told the courtroom he “can’t recall” if he had detained Joseph that night on the midway. Whenever he was ques tioned at all about detaining the 14-year-old, he stuck to that story. But an HCSO detention record from that night said that Clark was the detaining officer. On the form it said that Joseph was, “Running through the midway causing disorderly conduct.” The midway is the main area of the fair, where many of the attractions and food vendors are located.

Sept. 13—’You can’t manufacture facts’: Hillsborough deputies can’t get story straight During the second day of the federal trial for the wrongful death of Andrew Joseph III, Hillsborough County Sheriff Deputies and law yers contradicted themselves. The discrepancies in their stories were so obvious that they led judge Mary Scriven to tell HCSO’s defense team, “You can’t manufacture facts.”

Corporal Mark Clark, who worked under Anthony, detained Joseph and claimed he com mitted disorderly conduct, even though there was no evidence of the teenager committing a crime. The child was not arrested that night, but was ejected under the order of Clark and left by the side of Orient Road, about 100 yards south of I-4.

The federal trial seeking accountability for the death of Andrew Joseph III began today, and several activists from Florida and around the country arrived in Downtown Tampa to support the Joseph family. While jury selection occurred inside Judge Mary Scriven’s courtroom at the Sam Gibbons Federal Courthouse, the activ ists gathered outside. There, they decried the actions of Hillsborough County Sheriff (HCSO) deputies, who detained and removed Joseph against his will from Student Day the Florida State Fair in 2014.

Essentially, this means that a child is “taken into custody” as soon as a law enforcement offi cer detains them and makes it clear that they are not free to leave. After Anulewicz read this law out loud to the court, Anthony said to the courtroom, “I have a different definition of what taken into custody means.”

Porrino was friends with Joseph and saw him just before HCSO took the 14-year-old into custody and ejected him from the Florida State Fair on Feb. 7 2014, despite no evidence of him committing a crime. Joseph died later that night on I-4 while trying to find his way home, after an HCSO deputy alleg edly told him and his friend that they had to cross the interstate to get back to their ride.
During day five of the federal trial for the wrongful death of Andrew Joseph III, lawyers representing Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) objected to part of a testimony from a close friend of Joseph’s.
In 2014, HCSO told the Tampa Bay Times that Joseph III was involved in “disorderly con duct on the midway.”
The defense team for HCSO didn’t want Corey Thornton to testify that a deputy told the children that they should cross Interstate 4 to find their ride home after he and Joseph were ejected from the Florida State Fair on Feb. 7, 2014. Lawyers for HCSO argued that a portion of Thornton’s testimony would be hearsay, but Judge Mary Scriven denied the defense team’s attempt to block it from the jury.
Joseph said that his son was the “kind of child that parents pray for” and called him a “golden child.” He pointed out how responsible his son was, and how he’d protect those around him, even small creatures like lizards that got in their house
During questioning from Joseph family attorney Todd Norbraten, Thornton explained that they were ejected out of Gate 4 by HCSO. To get back, the boys had to make their way to the other side of the fair. The children wanted to cross through the fair to make it to the pickup spot for their ride home, at Gate 3.
Throughoutsometimes.thetrial, similar sentiments have been shared by his mother, Deanna Joseph, multiple friends of the family, a for mer football coach, and his younger sister Deja Joseph, who testified today. “He was my protector, he was my everything,” Deja said.
The photo was projected above Joseph’s head as he testified about his son’s life. Andrew Joseph III’s eyes are wide in the picture as he looks away from the camera, with a wooden fence in the background. He was holding a card in front of him that said his name, the letters “b/m”
The kids approached an unnamed HCSO deputy and asked if he could escort them through the fair. Thornton said the deputy told the chil dren that they were trespassed from the fair and they’d be arrested if they tried to enter.

The deputy then told them he could technically arrest them just for being there. He then told the boys that their gate was on the other side of I-4, even though it wasn’t. “He [the deputy] said that the only thing separating us from this gate and the other gate was the interstate,” Thornton told the court.
Joseph was just 14-years when he died after being struck by an SUV on I-4 that night while trying to find his way home. There is no evidence that either of the boys committed a crime that night, but still they were taken into HCSO cus tody and ejected from the fair.
“They [HCSO] were not asked to execute the bench warrant,” Scriven told HCSO’s defense team. The judge pointed out that she was taken aback by the fact that HCSO “went and removed the young lady” from her house without any permission from the court.

Thornton, now 21, was only 12 years old at the time. He told the court he was allowed to go with Joseph to the fair because Joseph was like an older brother to him. Judge Mary Scriven had ordered a bench war rant for the witness yesterday at the request of HCSO’s defense team. The warrant, she said in court, was supposed to be carried out by Federal Marshalls, not HCSO. Losat was in court that day and heard Scriven’s decision. But he still saw it proper to override the judge’s wishes and call a deputy to tell him to arrest the witness.
“It’s a Fourth Amendment violation,” he said. In the U.S. Constitution, the Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. “You can’t detain someone for running,” Tucker added.
But lawyers for the Joseph family have pointed out that there’s been no evidence pre sented that the teenager ever committed a crime before he was grabbed by Corporal Mark Clark, a defendant in the case, and ejected.
But in the days after Joseph III died, HCSO told the media that dozens of kids were kicked out on the same night as Joseph for criminal behavior, and didn’t bother to separate his name from those involved.
During day six of the federal trial for the wrongful death of Andrew Joseph III, his father, Andrew Joseph Jr., was shown the last known photo of his son. It was a mugshot of the 14-yearold, taken by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 7, 2014. That night, HCSO took the child into custody, ejected and trespassed him from the Florida State Fair, despite no evi dence of him committing a crime.

T
he City of Tampa’s latest plan for reusing treated sewage might be in the shitter. Last Thursday, Tampa City Council members unanimously voted to turn down a $1.2 million request from Mayor Jane Castor’s adminis tration, which sought to use the money for more research and public talks regarding a controversial plan to divert treated wastewater to the Hillsborough River and potentially use it to augment the city’s drinking supply.
The city currently treats around 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of reclaimed water at its Howard F. Curren wastewa ter plant before dumping it into the surrounding bay. Castor’s administration argues that the proposed plan—Purify Usable Resources for the Environment, or “PURE”—could help main tain minimum flows in the lower river, make the city’s drinking water supply more reliable and also help Tampa comply with a recent state law (SB64).

“Bolts fans will continue to hear the same great broadcast they have become accustomed to with Dave Mishkin on play-by-play along side Lightning founder and Hockey Hall of Famer, Phil Esposito, serving as color analyst. Greg Linnelli returns as the host for pre-game, intermission, and post-game, along with a other talent and personalities,” the released added. “In addition, fans will soon be able to hear exclusive Bolts content on 102.5 HD-2 via any HD radio. The station will be inclusive
This relationship raised a lot of questions during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically from Timothy Burke, a Creative Loafing Tampa Bay contributor and star of Netflix’s new series “Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist,” who last October detailed the station’s relationship with the Lightning and its ongoing conveyor belt of COVID-19 falsehoods. The most problematic content, according to Burke, came from the station’s nationally-syndicated hosts like Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Clay Travis & Buck Sexton and others, who spent hours of airtime dismissing the effectiveness of vaccina tions, hosting conspiracy theorists and pushing
potentially dangerous and untested treatments, often immediately before or after the Bolts radio team signed on and off.
LOCALNEWS
But the locally-produced shows also peddled disinformation, like when AM Tampa Bay on Sept. 16 declared ivermectin “the most effec tive COVID “Summedtreatment.”up,thelikelihood you’ll land on anti-vaccination disinformation simply by tuning into the back-to-back and reigning Stanley Cup Champions’ radio flagship is extremely high,” wrote Burke. Of course, this was all in juxtaposition to the Tampa Bay Lightning organization’s actual stance on vaccines. In June of 2021, Jeff Vinik hosted First Lady Jill Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci for a “Shots on Ice” vaccination event at Amalie Arena.

The contact was unique in the sense Tampa Bay was the only NHL market whose radio home was broadcast from an explicitly political radio station.
But the Lightning claims its new part nership The Bone will bring all the same hockey-related content as fans came to expect over the last decade. This is all great, but let’s hope that when the game is over there’s a lot less bullshit on the airwaves.

For many Tampa residents this is a signifi cant amount of money. The median household income for an average Tampa resident is now $61,000, according to a recent Zillow study. This means Castor’s crypto loss is equal to nearly two bi-weekly paychecks for the majority of her constituents, or roughly the equivalent of two monthly rent checks for a one-bedroom apart ment. But despite her dismal crypto wallet, Castor had nothing but positive things to say at yesterday’s event, according to The Catalyst. “Everyone can learn the value of crypto,” she said, “and the idea that cryptocurrency is level ing the playing field for everyone.”
“Apologies for coming late to the conversation,” Castor tweeted in response to Suarez’s paycheck Bitcoin conversion announce ment from Nov. 2. “But I’m certainly up for the challenge.”Inanemail

last fall probably didn’t seem that risky. To be fair, in November of 2021, Bitcoin was at a record high of $68,990, with tech bros predicting at the time it would surpass $100,000.Of course, that growth didn’t happen, and just about every cryp tocurrency slumped to dismal levels last summer. Even today, the currency is valued at $20,147.80, which is a massive drop from its November peak.
A LOTTA BIT: Mayor Castor (L) lost more than half of a paycheck to Bitcoin last year.
“The new Crypto Experience Center has such a unique approach to educating people on bitcoin & leveling the playing field for EVERYONE who is interested to learn & invest,” tweeted Castor Tuesday afternoon. The mayor’s appearance at the event comes after the fact that her cur rent crypto wallet, or at least part of it, took a giant hit. Last November, Castor hosted the Bitcoin and Blockchain Summit in Tampa and told media outlets that she would accept two paychecks in the form of Bitcoin, following other mayors, like Miami’s Francis Suarez, who also jumped on the crypto-bandwagon.
last week, City of Tampa Communications Director Adam Smith told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that Castor ulti mately only had one paycheck converted to Bitcoin, which is a good thing considering that paycheck is worth 67% less than if she just got a regular old direct deposit. According to public records, Castor’s annual salary in 2021 was $170,539. So, assuming she was paid biweekly, then one paycheck before taxes and

So, where did all that money go? Well, it was cashed out by people who purchased Bitcoin before you did, and most importantly, realized it’s a pump-and-dump scheme before you did. Unfortunately, Mayor Castor did not do this. Smith told CL that Mayor Castor’s paycheck is still invested in Bitcoin, which means if she converted it during that first week of November last year, according to the Bitcoin Profit Calculator, it would now be worth roughly $2,117, a loss of $4,441.

ampa Mayor Jane Castor was on location to help kick off the opening of a new crypto currency hub, despite losing more than half a paycheck to Bitcoin. Last week, the mayor attended the opening of CoinFlip’s new “Crypto Experience Center” in downtown Tampa’s Sparkman Wharf and informed residents that the new business has “got it all.”

We’re supposed to get hung up on the details, which to DeSantis are beside the point.

THE RON IN ‘WRONG’: We’re supposed to make DeSantis a martyr of the liberal machine.
20,000 people, accessible only by plane or boat, wouldn’t be able to accommodate them.

We’re supposed to demand an explanation for why DeSantis chartered planes to ship migrants who’d never stepped foot in Florida from Texas to Massachusetts. (“Most of them are intending to come to Florida,” DeSantis said Friday, with no evidence that’s true.) We’re supposed to wonder why DeSantis paid $615,000 to a charter plane company that happens to be a big GOP donor.

And The New York Post was Johnny-onthe-spot with the headline DeSantis craved: “Liberals Deport Migrants.” (Details never were the Post’s thing, either.)
I know that this wasn’t just a political stunt. It was also a trap. DeSantis knew when he sent the migrants to Martha’s Vineyard—not Boston, like his goon in Texas reportedly promised— with a few personal effects, the small island of
If this advances DeSantis’ career, try to imagine what’s next. I can’t—and that terri fies me.
“The Republican primary is shaping up to be the Dickhead Olympics.”
We’re supposed to make DeSantis a mar tyr of the liberal machine. (An FBI search warrant would do him better than a truck load of Viagra.)
Don’t get me wrong. I know that fly ing Venezuelan asylum-seekers to Martha’s Vineyard was designed to piss me off. DeSantis’ entire political brand is built on owning the libs.
If this advances DeSantis’ career, try to imagine what’s next.
SKIDMOREGAGE
Leave it to Ron DeSantis to prove me wrong.
We’re supposed to insist on a federal investi gation into why Florida’s agents in Texas lured the migrants onto the planes with promises of housing and jobs (they aren’t legally allowed to work); why they instructed them to register their change of address with the wrong govern ment agency, which would ensure that they’d be slated for deportation; and especially why Department of Homeland Security agents listed the migrants’ mailing addresses as random homeless shelters all over the country, knowing the migrants would have to check in with the ICE office nearest whatever address the DHS agents put down, even if it was thousands of miles away, or face permanent removal.
thought by now I’d lost my ability to be shocked by the latest political outrage. Not just sur prised, but genuinely aghast and shaken to my core, like I was when George W. Bush’s team lied the country into war, or when the Trump admin istration threw kids into cages, or when Donald Trump incited a mob to storm the Capitol—or like I still am that no senior official went to prison for any of those events.
still free to go if they choose, and those whose families live there likely will. It’s not about forc ing the Biden administration to get “tougher” on border-crossers; border agents are already making nearly 2 million apprehensions a year.
I know all of that. And I should know better. But I’m still shocked that overt racism and abject dehumanization is a viable national political strategy, that the media is treating it like a legitimate policy dispute instead of minor-league fascism.
So after Martha’s Vineyard residents cared for them for two nights—volunteers gave them new cellphones—the state offered them the choice to move to Joint Base Cape Cod, where they’d be pro vided shelter and humanitarian aid. They took it.
We—the media, the elite, the non-MAGAs— are supposed to huff about the inhumanity and the laws he might have broken and how this recalls the Reverse Freedom Rides. We’re supposed to point out that they’re not illegal immigrants, that seeking asylum is not illegal, that the migrants can legally remain in the country at least until their asylum hearing, and that they escaped a socialist South American country DeSantis claims to despise.
It’s certainly not about finding a solution to the country’s decades-old immigration problems, because lord knows DeSantis hasn’t offered any (or at least anything worth discussing). It’sabout DeSantis preening for the conserva tiveOthermedia.far-right governors are doing the same trick. Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas bussed migrants to the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., where Vice President Kamala Harris lives, as if the Secret Service is going to let them in. Both he and DeSantis say they’re going to keep ship ping migrants to liberal cities, because human beings escaping economic squalor and political

Its upcoming tap room won’t serve any food, but the websites says resident food trucks will be on-site slinging different types of eats. ulfaven Brewery, which markets itself as “Carrollwood’s first microbrewery,” is finally gearing up for its grand opening. The North Tampa brewery took to its Instagram page yesterday to deliver the big news that its grand opening is happening Oct. 15-16.
Prices for a room at its neighboring four-star Marriott hotel average at about $450 a night , but rates for a room The Tampa EDITION start at about $600 and can climb to a whop ping $5,000 a night. Other amenities include a state-of-the-art spa, fitness center, event space, pool deck and large meeting areas, in addition to its new bars, lounges and restaurants.
There’s a whole slew of hotel renderings that can be viewed on marriott.com, which gives guests a sneak peek of its lobby, rooms, luscious restaurants and bars. The 26-story hotel is a result of a partnership between Marriott and hospitality legend Ian Schrager, who is most known for co-founding New York’s iconic Studio 54 in the late-1970s. Schrager worked with a few different architecture firms and design groups for Tampa Edition, including NY-based Morris Adjmi, Roman & Williams and Florida-based firm Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates.

HOWL YOU DOIN’? Wulfaven’s been introducing itself to Tampa Bay with local beer collabs.
The idea for Wulfaven started in 2017 when Joseph Lazzara and his father Santo Lazzara dreamed about creating a brewery of their own, after decades of combined industry experience between the two of them. Despite the pandemic stalling the business’ progress, the newly-con structed building broke ground at the end of 2021. Follow @wulfavenbrewing on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates on the brewery’s operating hours, tap list and more.
WULFAVENC/O
While Wulfaven is getting ready to open its doors for the first time in October, the micro brewery has already made a name for itself through various pop-ups, beer events and collabo rations with other local breweries, like Safety Harbor’s de Bine Brewing. Co. and Woven Water. One of Wulfaven’s signa ture brews is its Mexican lager, complete with a “crispy mouth feel, aromas of lemon zest and a smooth malty finish.”
Michelin-star chef John Fraser will open sev eral restaurants in Water Street Tampa’s new ‘EDITION’ hotel
During its debut weekend next month, Wulfaven Brewing Co.—located at 10828 Perez Dr.—will be open from noon-10 p.m. on Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. The soon-to-open craft brewery will update its new customers with its regular operating hours after next month’s grand opening.Wulfaven says it will brew every thing from juicy and bitter IPAs to crisp and clean lagers and pilsners, although its debut tap list hasn’t been released yet.

Before moving back to St. Pete and open ing The Bends in 2012, Kaye and his now-wife, Victoria, lived in New York City where they went to school, tended bar, and completely immersed themselves in the culture and nightlife. Although Kaye has swapped his debaucherous late nights for the more domes tic life of a father and husband, the legacy of The Bends’ good drinks, live music and gnarly mosh pits lives on.
an absolutely stacked lineup to the back room. All-girl indie band Spoiled Rat, rock trio Charlie, internationally-acclaimed experimental rap duo They Hate Change and solo indie artist Fessi K will certainly set the standard for future gigs booked by We’re Sweet Girls. The party starts at 8 p.m., but the Girls say they won’t release any set times, as folks should give every act on the bill their time of day—a theme that can be expected from upcoming shows as well. Each
“There’s really not many places to play in St. Pete anymore,” says Strickland, who’s per formed at The Bends many times before. “I’m really thankful for The Bends in that way; we don’t really know what we’d do without it.”

Not many changes have been made since the bar opened at 919 1st Ave. N in fall of 2012. The handsome portrait of ‘80s beefcake Tom Selleck that guards its service area, and the Licensed to Ill-themed mural in the back room have held up well against the years of cigarette smoke and late night debauchery. There’s no signage anywhere. Instead, a large cartoon finger points at the front door beckoning folks to enter the narrow, dimlylit space. Inside, bar goers are typically met with the echoing thud of a kick drum and maybe an ex or two they’d hoped to avoid.
For the 10-year anniversary this week end, a newly-formed DIY booking duo brings
ive bars aren’t hard to come by in St. Pete, but a select few have their own unique strain of patrons who help turn watering holes into whole worlds within themselves. The Bends, now in its 10th year, has earned its rank as a true institution of the Sunshine City.
One of the last remaining small venues in St. Pete, almost every Bends show is free to attend; bands are also guaranteed a percentage of bar sales. “We would prefer to pay out of our own profits and have a busier night for every one involved. In certain situations we are able to do a cover or utilize a larger budget,” Kaye states. Hundreds of acts across the country have made ears ring at the bar’s back room, includ ing two of its longest-running resident parties, Trippy Squad and UNFUN, which will take over Saturday after We’re Sweet Girls’ debut booking.
The Bends team—the Kayes, Craig Dragoonis, Chris Stone and Jason Mcnally, in addition to about a dozen bartenders and other staff—is a close-knit group of folks dedicated to preserving the unique atmosphere of the “classy dive.”
By Kyla Fields
The Bends is the nightcap for all walks of life in The Burg’. You might joke about not going there, but still end up somehow walking under neath that finger anyway. And when you run into your ex in its narrow hallway or in a crowd for another louder-than-life show that makes your ears ring until the next morning, it’s hard to argue that the endearing dive bar doesn’t wholeheartedly fill its niche.
LOCALMUSIC
On Saturday, the beloved dive celebrates a decade downtown by doing what it does best: hosting a stacked live show and slinging stiff drinks. There’s something that’s so quintessen tially St. Pete about this small bar that’s been making regulars out of folks from all walks of life—one of the reasons that co-owner and St. Pete native Matt Kaye opened the bar in the first place. After scraping together enough money, he and his partners decided to open a watering hole and underground venue on the “outskirts of town,” which is now the condofilled EDGE District.

A beloved downtown dive celebrates a whirlwind decade in St. Pete.
Although the interior of The Bends actu ally hasn’t changed much, small details have culminated over the years, turning the bar into something unique. The colorful string lights lin ing the bar’s ceiling have come and gone, there’s a steady rotation of old games in the back room

experiences together,” Kaye tells CL. “We always try to provide a creative safe space for the adven turous underground of St.Pete to imbibe with delicious cocktails and ruckus good times.”
His most recent endeavor, the beloved res taurant and cocktail bar Wild Child, is more of a reflection of 2022 Matt Kaye, while The Bends represents the 2012 version of himself. “Wild Child allows my whole family to experience what I do and also has given me the opportunity to work with a whole new amazing crew of hard working, gifted individuals,” he adds.
Twenty-two year-old Summer Strickland, one-fourth of Spoiled Rat, and 26-year-old Zoe Robinson, who makes music under the moniker Fessi K, recently formed the promotions group to help bring diversity, intention ality, and accessibility back into St. Pete’s DIY music scene. Although Strickland and Robinson are playing their first show as Spoiled Rat and Fessi K alongside close friends in Charlie and They Hate Change, their upcoming events will cover a wide span of musicians, genres and even artistic mediums. “Having to go out and find people to play our shows—I really enjoy the intentionality of that. It’s almost like going out and combing through crates trying to find a specific record. It’s hard work, but there’s a great payoff, ” Robinson tells CL.
Kaye wouldn’t share details on his lease at 1st Avenue N, so there’s no public timeline on its future, but we can only hope that the bar has another decade under its belt. “The Bends was born a classy dive and will die a classy dive... if that day ever comes,” Kaye says elusively.
ALTIERICASSIDY
“We knew we wanted to be part late-night venue and part dance club while offering cre ative and affordable cocktails. A key element we really wanted to have was just having the kindest and most fun bar staff,” Kaye tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “Ultimately, The Bends is a representation of its owners’ experi ences, lives, travel and a specific time period.”

C Off With Their Heads w/Busy Weather/Rutterkin/City Mouse/Spanish Needles Beloved Bay area punk promoter Chewy Hemphill (aka Savage Beat) wel comes back Off With Their Heads, a favorite of Florida punk-rock bacchanal The Fest. The group, which released acoustic and live albums in 2020, was supposed to play Crowbar last year, but ended up canceling when the Delta variant surged in the free state of Florida. “Even though I believe most people that come to the shows are vacci nated, we don’t want to head to an area that is struggling with hospital capacity,” the band wrote at the time. We’ve lost track of which coronavirus strain the Sunshine State is on these days, but you’re going to kick yourself in the crotch if you miss this headlining set preceded by Busy Weather, a self-professed purveyor of “muppet punk and goblin pop,” plus local favorites Rutterkin and City Mouse. C Benjamin Booker w/Carson Cox Tampa Bay has a few favorite musical sons that have made it big, and that includes Benjamin Booker. The 33-year-old Hillsborough High School graduate had already taken on Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival and our very own Gasparilla Music Festival before
Stick To Your Guns w/Kublai Khan/ Belmont/Koyo/Foreign Hands In January 2020, just before the world shut down, Stick To Your Guns wrapped recording on its latest album Spectre . No, it’s not a James Bond salute by any means, but a 12-track collection of screamo that finally emerged in July of this year. The California punk band returns for its first Bay area show since a 2019 gig at the since-shuttered Orpheum in Ybor. Texas hardcore band Kublai Khan, as well as Belmont, Koyo, and Foreign Hands open. Talk about stacked. (Orpheum, Tampa)

C Photon It’s no secret that Dunedin Brewery can be a stronghold for jam-scene lifers, and they’ll flock there to kick off the weekend with multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Dunstan, guitarist Chris Michetti, Dopapod drummer Neal “Fro” Evans, and Bay area bass heavyweight Vinny Svoboda. Together, the quartet is known as Photon, and plays heavy, jamtronic and trance grooves. As usual, there’s no cover to get in during this two-night stand that kicks off Friday. (Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin)
C Intoxicated w/Heaven’s Gate/PeZ/ Collapsor A hellish mixture of central Florida’s heaviest bands is in Sulphur Springs this week end. Visitors include Gainesville’s Pez, plus thrashy Orlando-based headliner Intoxicated, playing in support of a new album, Watch You Burn, released in June. The effort is a grooveheavy throwback to the band’s ‘90s-era heyday, and a nod to the death metal that made Tampa famous (Obituary) plus classic metal bands like Slayer. Tampa grindcore band Collapsor rounds things alongside a set from scene newb and supergroup, Heaven’s Gate. Not to be confused with the German band from the ‘80s, this Heaven’s Gate is a Florida metal-crossover fantasy featuring members of Cannibal Corpse, Municipal Waste, Warthog and Reversal of Man. (Born Free Pub & Grill, Tampa)
SoundSalon: Wookess Williams w/ Jackson Davis/Jeff Brawer/Shae Krispinsky/Jeremy Gloff Contrary to the moniker, Wookess Williams is not an EDM act. And contrary to the date on the calendar, this show will find Williams teaming back up with Will “Jackson” Davis to rehash songs from an acoustic project they started almost two decades ago. The duo is joined by a trio of best friends/Tampa songwriters for this “SoundSalon” show in Seminole Heights. (The Disco Dolls Studio, Tampa)
Barns Courtney w/The Ramona After postponing his summertime show last min ute, U.K.-born, Seattle-bred songwriter Barns Courtney reinvented his look and backstory. Inspired by Oscar Wilde and Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 31-year-old’s new facade takes the form of “Supernatural” a brand new single, which is more dance-floor ready, and rocking, than anything he’s put out before. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Aurelio Voltaire w/Laboratory It’s hard to call Voltaire a goth poser. Aside from his dark style of music that almost always uti lizes orchestral instruments—and takes on styles including, but not limited to sea shan ties, parody, and good ol’ alternative—the 55-year-old Havana-born musician has also created Halloween-themed stop-motion for television, and written horror novels for both children and adults. (Music Hall at New World Brewery, Tampa)
C Bangarang 10 Year Anniversary Party feat. ABR/Dea And Saint/Shevonne/ Pilot Jonezz In the more than 10 years I’ve had a byline at Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, only one band has garnered more traction than Bangarang when it comes to Best of the Bay reader polls. It’s no surprise either. For the last decade the hybrid rock group has been not just a surefire party-starter, but one of the biggest scene champs, ready to be at other artists’ shows and, more recently, book them under the Healthy Phoenix promotions group from Bangarang frontman Senyo Fugar. For its anniversary, the boys have asked their favorite bands to open and invited a couple luminaries of the local songwriter and rap scene—Shevonne and Pusha Preme, respectively—to play each others songs, too. C Pink Turns Blue w/Sleeping Pills/ Layne Lyre Lurk Records is a good home for A Bend In Time , the new album from Tampa post-punk and new wave outfit Sleeping Pills. The group—fronted by Phil Taylor—wrote the eight-track outing during the pandemic and emerged with a beach-goth-approved col lection of weird guitar and dance floor-ready bass lines for fans of The Cramps, Dick Dale and Joy Division. We’re hoping Fjshwjfe’s Kate Magruder makes it onstage for a perfor mance of album highlight “Hole In the Heart” at this show headlined by German heavy weight of the genre Pink Turns Blue, which is on the road supporting its 2021 album, Tainted . Antonio Rey List the top five living flamenco guitarists in the world, and Rey would be among them. The Spanish fingerpicking phenom is in Ybor City this weekend to support Flamenco sin Fronteras (“flamenco without borders”), an album of jazz and romantic ballads that is also the 2020 Latin Grammys’ winner for Best Flamenco Album. And while the Gitano guitarist born in Madrid is only 41 years old, Rey has been playing in flamenco bars (“tablaos”) since he was a 10-year-old boy onstage with his father. C Michael McArthur Fresh off gigs at AmericanaFest in Nashville, Florida song writer McArthur is back home and ready to play his sophomore album, Milky Stars , which came out last week. He’ll be a sight for sore eyes at the beautiful Polk Theatre, too, as he hasn’t played a hometown show in almost three years. Recorded in a 125-yearold house with Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King (Norah Jones, Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon), the album captures a period of life where McArthur saw his grandma die, and also grapple with the idea that we all need to spend more of our time making a positive contribution to this world. There’s a little less sweat in our underwear these days, and to celebrate The Factory is having a party. The maestro will be Rich Media, who’s recently jumped into the listening bar game as Music Director for Austin, Texas’s branch of Miami’s famous Dante’s Hi-Fi. As a child, Medina came up in both the Baptist church and hip-hop, and as an archivist, storyteller, educator, and “ambassador for Black excellence” he brings the totality of his tastes to the turntables. His St. Pete set is supposed to wrap at 11 p.m., so don’t be surprised if he stops into Crowbar in Ybor City to say hello to his old friends at Ol’ Dirty Sundays. (The Factory, St. Petersburg)

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats w/Midlake Well, son of a bitch. Soul and Americana superstar Nathaniel Rateliff and his seven-piece, the trusty Night Sweats, are about to play their second Bay area show this year. In March, the group opened for The Lumineers at Innings Festival, and got through the majority of its latest album The Future . This gig will most likely be the same
Karol G w/Agudelo888 Latin Grammywinning, Coachella-playing Colombian powerhouse is heralded for being such a prominent figure in the male-dominated genre of Latin music. The Billboard charttopper has collaborated with big names in the industry like Becky G and Bad Bunny, making her name known through these star-studded projects. Agudelo888, a Latin American DJ, will be opening up shows across the nation. (Amalie Arena, Tampa)
C Quicksand w/Bloodlet Quicksand rose to fame in the 1990s after its debut self-titled EP, and subsequently released follow up albums Slip in 1993 and Manic Compression in 1995. The quartet split up after that, but reunited in 2017 and has been playing shows and releasing new music for the past five years. The band dropped its latest, Distant Populations last year on Epitaph Records. According to the band’s website, its latest release “has an emotional resonance that is only amplified by the events of the past stressed-out, locked-down year.” Orlandobased metalcore band Bloodlet opens. I Prevail w/Pierce The Veil/Fit For A King/Yours Truly Vegas’ When We Were Young festival proves that there are more emo and alternative music bands from our middle and high school glory days still going than we may think. Surprisingly, Pierce The Veil is among those listed, and though it’s been a rough few years for the band, the remaining members of the now-Mike Fuentes-free band might be preparing to release its fifth album sometime soon, with the recent release of the “Pass The Nirvana” single. You’ll probably get to hear that and more when Pierce The Veil co-headlines with I Prevail. It’s like Warped Tour all over again. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

C Bonobo Last week, Simon Green released “ATK” a brand new single from his forthcoming LP of new material, Fragments , due on Ninja Tune early next year. The cut was initially a DJ edit of “Dada” by Ghanaian Highlife guitarist Atakora Manu, but took on a life of its own. Last week in Canada, the 46-year-old producer bet ter known as Bonobo kicked off his North American tour, which has quickly made its way to the south. (The Ritz, Ybor City)
C Lizzo w/Saucy Santana We’re not sure if the 34-year-old “Truth Hurts” hitmaker will turn up at Tampa’s Bake’n Babes to serenade a Freak Shake again, but after all she’s had going this year—from host ing and performing on “SNL,” to starting her “Watch Out For The Big Grrrls” reality show, which has already won an Emmy— she deserves one more than anybody. Either way, Lizzo’s latest album Special shook TikTok upon its announcement in April, and her first of hopefully countless headlining gigs at Amalie is not one you’ll wanna miss, especially if you saw her at the iHeartRa dio Jingle Ball or Yuengling Center in 2019. Sevendust w/Nonpoint/Bastadane/ Burden The Sky Atlanta hard rock band Sevendust recorded its latest album Blood & Stone in Florida, but it won’t be the focus at this show. Last year marked 20 years since the release of Animosity, but with art ists still testing the waters of permanently getting back into the groove of live music, Sevendust settled for a career retrospec tive tour last fall. This year however, the band has been playing Animosity beginning to end on the road, including this thirdto-final date of the tour. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Will Quinlan w/Billy Summer Quinlan is a local Jakob Dylan in a sense, crossing neofolk and Americana with soulful poetry. His latest single “Texarkana” was produced by local legend Steve Connelly, who used to play in The Headlights while backing Roger McGuinn. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll get to hear that one at this no cover gig alongside Billy Summer who plays a potent power-pop and garage-rock hybrid. It’s a busy Saturday at New World, too, thanks to an Americana gig with The Wandering Hours who play the Music Hall, and the WMNF record fair happening earlier in the day. (Biergarten at New World Brewery, Tampa)
C The Dukes of Hillsborough w/Flat Stanley/Crash Mitchell If there was an award for best reunion show no one asked for, this gig would win it. Members of Dukes of Hillsborough have been telling time by their vices since for about 20 years, and are back together for a one-off gig, celebrating a legacy of punk-rock that’s seen the Dukes team up with bands like Off With Their Heads for split 7-inches and put out a slew of its own great releases, too (start with If Only We Had Some Place To Go ). Again, you should never throw beer at a band, but you’re going to feel tempted to when the Dukes of Hillsborough get going onstage at this no cover throwdown. Crash Mitchell revives his own band to open the show alongside Buck Sands’ Flat Stanley project. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)
Lecrae Over the summer, Reach Records canceled a much-anticipated “We Are Unashamed” tour featuring Lecrae, and while there wasn’t a Tampa date on that run, the Bay area will the rapper in its neck of the woods. The 42-year-old has been unafraid to say his piece when it comes to Christianity and said he once lost a gig after criticizing what he called “the institutional, corporatized, gentrified, politicized, cultur ally exclusive version” of his faith. Reportedly, Collins is knocking ‘em dead nightly, playing songs from her now 60-year career in music. No less than the New York Times gushed that Collins’ voice still sounds “as clear as a spring wending through a field of wildflowers.” Can’t wait for the flowers to land in Tampa Bay.
She just played Tampa Bay in earlier this year, but folk legend and Grammy win ner Judy Collins is on another tour, and will grace us with her presence next year. The 83-year-old is touring with an orchestra to play her 1967 album Wildflowers . In January, she played the same room in support of a brand new album, Spellbound . sense of the term, and I think you should let your boyfriend put his picture back up.
Most of your readers starts with specifying their sexual orientation, age, and sex. Some of this information… Go to savage.love to read the rest.
As for his claim that swapping dick pics and compliments are things straight guys do…
I haven’t had a chance to snoop through Harry Styles’ phone, SMELLTEST, so I can’t definitively say that no straight guy has ever sent another straight guy his dick pics. (Or spat on another straight guy at a film premiere.) And seeing as lots of straight men enjoy play ing “gay chicken” these days (and posting the videos to TikTok), it stands to reason that some straight guys may be swapping dick pics and
P.S. I hope those videos you BF sent his friend of him having sex with other women were taken with the consent of those other women and that he had their permission to share those videos with his friend.
When I checked his phone, I also found strange messages to one of his male friends. My BF sent this guy nudes and videos of him having sex with other women. (This was before we met.) There were also messages detailing how much they admired and missed each other’s cocks, and my boyfriend said he wanted to fuck other women with his friend. When I asked him about his relationship with this man, he said that they are just good friends, and that this kind of sexting was “something straight guys do.” I don’t think any of my past straight boyfriends ever talked about missing other guys’ cocks, but this is the first boyfriend whose phone I ever checked for shenanigans. Is this something straight guys do?
I don’t care if my boyfriend was bisexual, but I don’t want to be lied to. And I really don’t want to be the crazy girlfriend, but my boyfriend had framed photos of this particular guy in his house that I made him remove. I also asked him to cut off all contact with this man. This is all fresh in my mind because we ran into this guy the other night. They kept telling each other how good they both looked and my BF was visibly nervous the whole time. Is my boyfriend telling me the truth? Do straight guys who don’t have any sexual interest in their friends send them dick pics? My BF is in his mid-40s. He knows I’m bi. The “no contact with exes” rule was his idea, not mine, and I think this guy counts as an ex and should remain blocked. Do you agree?—Straight Men Exchanging Long Lusty Texts Exuding Sexual Tension
was swapping texts, sexts, and photos with his exes the whole time, lurking on dating apps, and maintaining multiple Instagram accounts. You concluded he hadn’t cheated on you—he just broke his own stupid rule—but in my experience, SMELLTEST, “rules for thee, not for me” types are rarely very good at honoring monogamous commitments over the long term. I’m not saying he’s cheated on you already, but if not getting cheated on ever is important to you… he might not be the guy.
Police states
He was apparently willing to overlook your snooping, SMELLTEST, seeing as you’re still together. And you were apparently willing to overlook the mountain of incriminating evidence you found on his phone. While you honored his “no contact with exes’’ rule from the start, he
Your boyfriend made the rule—no contact with exes (not even eye contact on the sub way?)—but at some point, after the lying and gaslighting, you became the enforcer: digging through his phone, ordering him to block his exes, take down framed photos, etc.
If this friend is the only guy your boyfriend has ever messed around with, SMELLTEST, if that one guy’s cock is the only cock he’s ever wanted to push past his tonsils, your boyfriend is free to round himself down to straight. I also don’t think having messed around with this one dude makes them “exes” in the romantic/dating
There is more to this week’s Savage Love. To read the entire column, go to savage.love. I’m monogamous and have been dating my boyfriend who identifies as straight for a little over a year. He told me that he had a strict “no contact with exes” policy when we first met. Due to some sketchy behavior, lies and gaslighting on his part—regarding contacts with his ex-girl friends, open dating profiles, and multiple private Instagram accounts—I checked his phone, and my suspicions were confirmed. He didn’t cheat but there were some inappropriate messages that he apologized for. He blocked all his exes and is on the straight and narrow now.
Finally, SMELLTEST, what the two of you are doing—this guy with his no-contact rules about exes and his lies, you with your snooping and demands to take down photos—sounds so exhausting. Is this a relationship or a police state? If he can manage to remain monogamous and gets a charge out of swapping dick pics with an old friend, what harm is there in that? Why not let him have that? And if the guy was hot… why not let both of them have you?
SAVAGELOVE
My hunch is that your guy had and enjoyed a few MMF threesomes with this guy before you met, and it was in that context—with a woman in the room to heterosexualize any incidental homosexual contact—that he came to appreciate his friend’s cock. Seeing as you dug through his phone long enough to find all the dating apps he’s on, all the messages he’d been swapping with ex-girlfriends, and all those fake Instagram accounts, SMELLTEST, if he was bisexual you probably would’ve found messages he’d sent to other men and his Grindr, Scruff, and Sniffies accounts too.
ironic messages about how badly they want each other’s cocks for the lols. But I don’t think that kind of behavior is common among straight guys, particularly straight guys in their 40s.
