Welcome Positive Focus When we started Embassy Direct our focus was firmly on the diplomatic community, within South African borders. Over the years our distribution has expanded to include both the diplomatic as well as corporate expatriate communities, living and working, on the African continent. In this edition we feature a number of interview’s with individuals who travel Africa extensively. Sitting in on one such interview, with Mr Amadou Fall, was truly inspiring - Amadou spoke of the way tea is served in Ethiopia, great coffee coming out of Uganda, his favourite art, in Burkina Faso and more. Whilst we know the continent has many challenges our objective is to be a part of the greater good and highlight the positive news - there is so much of it. On a separate note we get to know some of the expatriate community very well and it’s always hard to say goodbye to them (when they move to another part of the world). We’ve come to admire their ability to adapt to new countries and all that goes with that. One is struck by the amount of good being done by said ‘expats’ - from hands on charity work to acting as brand ambassador’s for Africa. With this in mind our team from Embassy Direct and The Safari Guys would like to bid Sharla and Eric Rittershaus a found farewell - thank you for all your support Sharla. As ever we strive to build a bridge between the African expatriate community and providers of quality services. Enjoy!

Fly Guys Across African Skies by Dominique Phohleli Embassy Direct recently had the pleasure of speaking to two businessmen who spend an insane amount of time jetting across the African continent. A breakfast meeting in Lagos followed by an evening conference in Accra and desk-time back in Johannesburg the following day is all part of the job, and these Fly Guys have mastered the art of business travel, each in their unique way. Amadou Gallo Fall, NBA Vice President and Managing Director Africa, currently travels to his home country, Senegal, as well as Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Kenya on a regular basis. Soon he'll be adding Uganda, Angola and Tanzania to that list, as he grows his Basketball without Borders project across the continent. Kendy Phohleli, Executive of the Africa Hub Project at SAA, lists countries he currently travels to regularly as Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast. He also spends time in Kenya, and has visited the likes of Rwanda, Burundi, Angola and Mozambique on business before.

Amadou Gallo Fall NBA Vice President and Managing Director Africa Both are based in Johannesburg, but such are their schedules that it was impossible to get the two of them together to chat about their travels across the continent. Amadou was preparing for the first NBA Africa game, which was held in Johannesburg, and Kendy was putting the final touches to the inaugural SAA flight from Accra to Washington DC. Speaking to them separately, we found many similarities in their attitude towards travel in Africa, and in their choices of favourite spots. One major difference, though, is in how they pack their bags. While Kendy has perfected the art of traveling lightly, being able to manage up to one week on business travel with only carry-on luggage, Amadou feels compelled to have lots of extras when traveling, which means he has to check in a suitcase. Kendy Phohleli Executive of the Africa Hub Project at SAA

"Packing is one area I feel I've gotten worse at over time," he says of needing a big suitcase for a three-day trip.

Where Kendy checks weather forecasts and packs accordingly, for the exact number of days he'll be away plus one, just in case there are delays in flights or he has to extend his trips, Amadou feels he needs more of his personal things with him. He knows that the extra ties and extra shoes mean he has to check in a suitcase, and then worry that the bag might be delayed, but that's just how it is. “I'm the worst packer," he says simply. "I pack neatly, but I take too much." Says Fall of how to maintain composure when negotiating airport: "Traveling is an attitude. For me, it is exciting. Don't let the journey mess up the destination." Phohleli has some practical advice to add: "Make sure you sit as far forward on the plane as you can, so that you can reach immigration queues as quickly as possible."

Both consider OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg and Port Bouet Airport in Abidjan to be efficient and easy to travel through and while Fall doesn't have an airport he particularly finds challenging, Phohleli notes that he once counted thirteen different checks in Lagos from the time he arrived at the airport to when he boarded the aircraft. As far as hotels go, Amadou, whose height matches that of the basketball players he works with, has very straightforward needs. "A hotel room is just a place to sleep in," he says. "Just give me a good, large bed. As long as I can fit in the bed comfortably, the rest doesn't matter." Kendy sites internet connectivity as an important aspect of staying in hotels when he travels for business. He also needs to be well rested for meetings the next day, so for him it is important that his hotel room is in a quiet location, something that he says is not always easy to achieve. While a room may be far away from the busy, noisy street outside, if it's located near the bar and the band is playing till the early hours of the morning, it's difficult to get a good night's rest.

Both Kendy and Amadou say they cannot travel without their I-pads. Each of them always has a set of gym clothes packed, in case there's time to do a bit of training in between their hectic schedules. Amadou's music playlist is also important for him when he travels, and with that, his own headphones. With a laugh, Amadou remembers that he has a stack of magazines that travel with him, that he hasn't had the time to read yet. "Someday when I take that long dreamt-about vacation, I'll read them," he says.

Phohleli considers Maputo, Mozambique and Kigali, Rwanda to be the best cities in Africa to do business in. "Both have business friendly environments where people are very proactive and very keen," he says. "It's easy to understand legislation, and it's easy to get around. Many people in these cities are entrepreneurs, so they want to do business." He also says that the layout of these cities is very straightforward. "The business centre is concentrated so to get around from one appointment to the next is very simple." In other cities, where moving around the city is challenging, Phohleli sometimes arranges to have meetings at the airport when he arrives first thing in the morning, knowing that with the unpredictable nature of traffic, it is possible that he would only reach the city centre by lunchtime, which reduces the amount of time he has to conduct business. Fall notes that there is a distinct difference in pace between West Africa and East Africa. "It's a bit more laid back on the east coast of the continent, while on the west it is more chaotic, in a good way. Of doing business in Africa, Kendy has this advice to give to rookies: "Learn patience. And build in extra time when getting to meetings, because traffic flow can be unpredictable.

During your first meetings, make the effort to get to know people so that you build a good rapport. Start your meetings talking about everything else first. Then talk business. Of course you could go straight into addressing the items on your agenda. It will be a meeting, but you won't necessarily have buy-in. Building relationships when doing business in Africa is important." So where in Africa would you find the smooth traveller taking time out to relax? For Amadou, while he enjoys being back home in Dakar, it is to Zanzibar he goes, to soak up the sun and revive himself. Mozambique is a place he has visited for work, but would like to return to for a holiday.

“Learn patience. And build in extra time when getting to meetings, because traffic flow can be unpredictable." Interestingly, Kendy's favourite relaxation spot is also on the East Coast of the continent, in Kenya's jewel on the coast, Mombasa. Mozambique is also on his list of places to visit on holiday, and he'd like to take time out and see more of Ghana, now that he travels there regularly for business. It seems that the smooth traveller knows that the combination of sea air and laid back cities that carry their own brand of history and charm, makes for the perfect combination of relaxation and rejuvenation. Between the two of them, Kendy and Amadou have spent time in major cities on most of the continent. They plan to continue doing so, and already have a list of countries and cities they would still like to visit.

They are in the unique position of being able to recommend good places to visit in a fairly large number of cities on the Continent. These are a handful of their top choices: Best cup of coffee: In Kigali, visit Bourbon Coffee in MTN Centre In Nairobi, Java House downtown and in Gigiri In Lagos: Art Cafe Best restaurants: In Lagos: RSVP, Posh in Ikoyi In Accra: Coco Lounge In Ouagadougou: Gondwana In Kampala: Medditeraneo In Johannesburg: Signature, Butcher Shop, Wombles Please note that this is by no means a complete list. And that's the thing about travel in Africa. There will always be something to aspire to. There will always a new place to visit, new people to meet, and new experiences to look forward to. Amadou sums it up this way: "I cannot think of a single place I have been to in Africa that I have not liked. I think you find beauty everywhere you go. If you are open-minded and relaxed about traveling, you enjoy the journey and the experience."

Why your website should be

Mobile-Responsive MBG Media By Iwan Pieterse African entrepreneurs have proven that they're capable of innovating and being competitive in the online marketplace, making competitive products and taking advantage of technologies at the same pace as other areas of the world. Africa has also highlighted the mobile revolution like no other region in the world. Analysts at Ericsson predict the mobile phone market to increase from 635 million subscribers in 2014 to close to 1 Billion in 2019 in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. This will give hundreds of millions more Africans access to the internet, with the mobile phone being the primary device through which they access the web.

In April 2015, Google implemented it's new 'Mobile Friendly' update, a significant change to it's search algorithm that dramatically affected how Google Search results are ranked (how close to the top they appear) depending on their Mobile “Friendliness”. Google is usually the first place any of us go to when we're looking for information, whether it be the contact details of a hotel, to get news, check restaurant reservations, look up tour operators or any other information you can think of. While you were reading that last sentence, approximately 480 000 searches were conducted in over 120 languages. Google handles over 3 billion searches a d a y. S o i f a n y b u s i n e s s o f f e r i n g t h e s e aforementioned services wants to attract those customers, it's important that they appear on those search results. This makes it important for your website to appear favorably to Google's search algorithms. And since the majority of Google searches are now done on mobile, Google will give those sites that are mobilefriendly preference. But, what does it mean for a site to be mobile friendly? Simply put, a mobile friendly, or more correctly, a mobile responsive site, is a website that adjusts it's layout to be optimal to the reader or user regardless of what device it's being viewed on. Smartphones are the best example of this. A typical smartphone is held in a portrait view that the user usually uses with only one hand. This arrangement favors layout where items are displayed below each other, with only vertical scrolling. Larger text and bigger buttons are also required to make the user experience better on mobile, as people are interacting with your site with their fingers, not a mouse.

80 Embassy Direct

If you're running a business that has any sort of online presence, whether it's just a simple contact page or a fully fledged e-commerce business, having this mobile responsiveness is absolutely crucial for attracting customers. While there are many websites that have a mobile and desktop “version” of their site, this is not a preferable solution, as there are a wide range of device sizes. The mobile environment today is drastically different from just 5 years ago. Tablets, phones, laptops, desktops each come in many different resolutions and sizes. Mobile responsiveness caters to each and every size and adjusts the content layout so it is optimal to the reader.

...from 635 million subscribers in 2014 to close to 1 Billion in 2019 in „ Sub-Saharan Africa alone.

Some Google Search results as viewed on an iPhone. Notice how Google now explicitly indicates which sites are 'Mobile-Friendly'. Also notice that these are the results that are on top.

So, how do you go about getting your website mobile responsive? There are many tools available online that offer website templates that are mobile responsive out of the box. These are called Themes and are website templates that are made available for the most widely used website platforms (called Content Management Systems) such as Wordpress. 1 out of every 5 websites you see on the internet is a Wordpress site. If you have a website that was developed for you by a developer or web designer, you will need to again get a developer or designer to do this.

The two most important things this designer needs to be to able to do is Install a new framework and be able to work with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). With just these two skills a designer can turn even an outdated website into a powerful and mobile responsive website in a matter of hours or days, depending on the amount of content on the site. It is of paramount importance to ensure your business's website is mobile responsive. Globally, the ratio of mobile vs desktop internet users is 66.7%. It's safe to assume that when someone is looking at your website, it will be on a phone or a tablet. Fortunately, this same explosion of consumer electronics technology, has also produced a huge talent pool. We are one of many such organizations and we're benefitting from this talent tidal wave, especially when it comes to creative work. This is especially true for Africa. Designers, photographers, developers and bloggers are all readily available, offering their services to other entrepreneurs who wish to take their vision to the masses. The Jewel in the heart of Sandton The Michelangelo Hotel Recently we asked hotelier Roberto Rosa, General Manager of the Michelangelo Hotel, a few questions about what it is like to be in charge of this magnicent jewel in the heart of Sandton's Richest Square mile. Here is what he had to say: What makes the Michelangelo Hotel the ideal place for business and leisure travelers to stay at when in Johannesburg? Roberto Rosa is the General Manager of The Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton

How would you describe the Michelangelo's style? The Michelangelo architecture is inspired by the architecture of the 16th Century: A renaissance styled structure with striking columns, arches, marble, limestone and moulded plaster are much in evidence, while in the central atrium, in particular, the nishes are given an aged look through the use of ochre-coloured plaster. The koi pond dominates the atrium and the view from the higher oors is a sight to feast your eyes on. Who does it appeal to? Sustainable development calls for green hospitality in a way that is benecial to the community and environment as well as being economically viable, staff that are interested and committed to the industry, Ebola, Visa requirements, Global nancial situation. What is currently to the industry's advantage? The exchange rate, our friendly people and staff, the natural beauty of South Africa, and the advanced infrastructure for business travellers. You were previously GM at the Da Vinci hotel. What would you say is the difference between the two? Both are beautiful properties in Sandton's hub. The Davinci offers a modern and striking décor with art, mosaic and a black and white theme throughout. The Michelangelo Hotel offers a classical renaissance styled hotel and lavish feel with impressive spaces and luxurious atmosphere. What is it like working under the leadership of Bart Dorrestein? Bart is an entrepreneur of great vision, totally passionate about his people and his brand and committed to social responsibility through various programs such as Legacy Pride and Blow the whistle.

His hands on approach and down to earth manner enable us to regularly interact with him and exchange ideas.

Which other countries have you lived in? Portugal, Italy, Tanzania and South Africa

What have you learned from the way he leads the Legacy Group? Bart manages the group as a family unit and we all refer to the Legacy Family. He constantly looks at ways to improve and develop his properties all built on solid foundations (pun intended)

Where have you enjoyed living the most? Without a doubt, South Africa.

What are the expansion plans in Africa for the Legacy group? Legacy is expanding into all key corporate and leisure destinations on the Continent. We currently operate in four countries. What advice do you have for people starting out in the hotel industry, with particular reference to dealing with lots of people? The strength of the Human Spirit Dr Bill Gallagher, Chef extraordinaire, visionary in the culinary world and humanitarian.

by Dominique Phohleli

There are many stories of the resilience of the human spirit. In today's age of the Internet, such tales are shared and re-shared with the press of a button or a tap on a Smart Phone screen, giving millions of people access to pinpricks of time in strangers' lives, often showing acts of bravery or kindness or endurance. These stories are a testament to the strength of human spirit, and though they live in cyberspace forever, they lack a certain longevity, with there being no before or after to these tiny moments in time. One person's brief instant in the spotlight is captured and shared, and soon forgotten as the next snapshot of another person's admiral act is waiting to be relished. But what about the people whose resilience and tenacity is so indelibly built into their core that their extraordinary moments are not just snapshots of time, but the consistent reality of their lives? The ones who continuously use all their reserves to not only to push themselves past the barriers they face, but to take people up with them along the way? One such person is Dr Bill Gallagher, Chef extraordinaire, visionary in the culinary world and humanitarian. Dr Gallagher's journey to being one of the most influential chefs not only in South Africa, but also across the globe, was by no means an easy one. In his recently published book, 'Lettuce and a Lady's Breast', Bill shares with us the story of his rise from humble beginnings in Jarrow, England, to being the world-renowned personality he is today.

The fire inside Bill as a young boy that caught the eye of the chef in charge of the first kitchen he worked in washing pots has been a constant presence throughout his life, driving him to continue to set and achieve new goals and heights. It would later be depended on as Bill the accomplished adult, with many noteworthy achievements under his belt, faced a harrowing situation that would leave lesser people rudderless and without direction. In 2000, Bill was shot in the spine in a hijacking in Johannesburg, the resulting injury leaving him quadriplegic. Bill faced his new reality head-on, taking a year off before continuing to focus on mentorship and humanitarian work. Billy Gallagher is the Honorary Llife President of The World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS), which covers 90 Countries and boasts 10 million members. He is the Honorary President of The South Africa Chefs Society and Centre for Culinary Excellence. Bill is also president and founder of the World Chefs Tour Against Hunger, and Chefs Without Borders, the largest charity feeding scheme in South Africa. The vision and aim of these organisations is to end world hunger, and who better to encourage such a project, than chefs worldwide.

Feature The inspiring influence Billy has over the people around him is palpable. Belinda Pinto who currently works with Billy and gave her creative input to the World Chefs Tour Against Hunger Tour in 2011, speaks of him with reverence and admiration.

“The man is a legend," she says of him. This sentiment is repeated by Corinne Harrison, who was instrumental in encouraging Billy to continue work on Lettuce and a Lady's Breast and ultimately get it published. Countless students who have benefited from his mentorship through the Bill Gallagher Young Chefs Forum, and those who have been given the opportunity to study through bursary programs enabled by fundraising through the Bill Gallagher Young Chefs Student Assistant Fund, attribute their quest for excellence „ to him.

In Lettuce and a Lady's Breast, Bill tells the story of his life, from his humble beginnings, through his journey transforming South Africa's culinary world, to how he sought to overcome the challenges he faces with quadriplegia. It is a story not only relevant to the hospitality industry, but to anyone looking for inspiration to achieve the seemingly unachievable. There is much to say about Billy Gallagher's accomplishments and his strength in the face of adversity. The list of his achievements runs pages long, and yet, one gets the sense that he is gracious and humble about the incredible work he has done, preferring to share and give credit to those who have helped him realise his dreams.

Qualifications are not always on a certificate. They are earned during time and effort through perseverance and „ asking for advice and mentorship. We asked Billy a few questions about his visionary influence and for advice for youngsters looking for ways to achieve their goals. This is what he had to say:

As someone who started his success with sheer determination and tenacity, what would you say the vital components of getting an education are? The main thing is to remember that education is a never-ending journey and that you need to keep challenging yourself to know more.

Your autobiography is a handbook for aspiring chefs and an inspirational read to the general public. Where can we buy a copy of your book? The book will be available off my website www.billygallagher.org and is currently available at Exclusive Bookstore in Hyde Park Johannesburg.

How can those of us without the relevant qualifications, but with drive, willpower and entrepreneurial spirit, succeed? Qualifications are not always on a certificate. They are earned during time and effort through perseverance and asking for advice and mentorship.

Your eBook on Amazon went straight to the number 4 spot on the top 100 autobiographies and memoirs of a chef. How did it feel to beat the likes of Jamie Oliver and other celebrity chefs worldwide? To be honest I was always taught never to believe your own publicity and I now understand that it was a timing issue, however I was still thrilled skinny.

What advice would you give to young people in South Africa who feel that there are not many career opportunities for them? In these difficult times when we have lots of people unemployed you have to keep yourself focussed on what it is you enjoy doing and be tenacious in seeking out opportunities continually looking for something that excites you. What are a few personality traits would you say are essential to becoming a successful chef? The first is self-discipline. You cannot just decide to sleep late and the next day offer your guest two breakfasts. Being punctual for work and being attentive when someone is teaching you will give you a head start. 'Lettuce and a Lady's Breast' is an autobiography. What made you decide you wanted to share your life story with us? I suppose ego is partly to blame but also I was encouraged by people around me to share my story, especially since the hi-jacking and recovery. How did the book come about? I was in hospital at Stoke-Mandeville spinal unit in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire after a couple of weeks I received an envelope which contained a dicta-phone and a box of tapes with the letter from journalists asking if I would record my thoughts while recovering. As I had no function with my hands I put it on one side and forgot about it, only when returning the South African did I continue recording with the journalist Chip Bowring, a renowned author in her own right who became a tremendous help and motivator. What has the process of writing your story told or reminded you about your life achievements? Looking back I have realised that I was blessed to have had mentors all the way through my career, which came at different times and helped me move forward. Whatever I have achieved it was through lots of wonderful people's assistance.

Was there a defining moment that made you decide to tackle world hunger with the World Chef's Tour Against Hunger? I met a wonderful lady who was running a charity called Operation Hunger operating feeding schemes to help mainly needy children. I went to Soweto to see one of their kitchens and immediately felt that there was something we could do to assist and carried on for the last 25 years doing so. How can our readers assist with the humanitarian work you are doing? There is so much that everyone can do at a local level to help underprivileged people in your area. Look on the web to find a charity that you can relate to and volunteer, or donate if you can. Money, foodstuffs, even old clothes, it all helps. You are an inspiration to many young people who aspire to be chefs one day. What is it that you tell them, to encourage them to chase their dreams? Be determined, believe in yourself and understand that you win slowly, sometimes just step at a time, but you will get there. What is it that you think they see in you, that inspires them? I hope honesty and commitment, which have been a driving force for me. Do you think South Africans are open to trying different types of cuisine, or are we rather set in our ways when it comes to our food preferences? The more we work and socialise together you will see all South Africans becoming more adventurous with a choice of foods, and of course TV is now educating everyone on how to cook.

Your positive attitude and daily inspiration is appreciated by many followers on your social media pages. How has social media played a part in influencing food and travel trends and the industry as a whole? I love spending a little time on the social media, which is taking over the world these days. It plays such a dominant part in our lives and nearly all of the decisions we make. The web has opened up “the world" and made everything instantly available. We have heard that you are a very big New Castle football fan. If you had not taken the road to becoming a world-renowned chef, do you think your next ideal career would have been a Professional football Manager? As a 10-year-old I wanted to play centre forward for England and Newcastle United. I soon realised that I would make a better supporter than a player but I would have loved to have run out onto the pitch at St James's Park with the number nine on my jersey. I still fantasise today.

For the Love of

Languages By Dominique Phohleli

One of the interesting aspects of expatriate life is the vocabulary we pick up along the way. It may be that we are living in a country where the national language is one other than our own, or we learn new languages simply by becoming friends with people from other countries who we meet on our expatriate travels. For someone whose time in Poland extends to a twenty-four hour party stop in Warsaw, my Polish vocabulary, at one point in time, was considerably large. I did not learn it by going to classes or taking an online course. Rather, I made friends with some Polish ladies living in Nairobi at the same time as me, and with their help, my education in their language began. I have to stress that it wasn't the typical 'learn the swear-words first' kind of education either. Not that I can't express myself with the very satisfying use of Polish profanities when needed, but, just for the record, they were not the first thing I learned. Some feelings and expressions just sound so much better in other languages, we can't help adopting them and replacing their English counterparts. In our house, for example, words in Turkish, Arabic, Swahili and German, sometimes with a dash of Polish, have become a normal part of our vocabulary. Sometimes I struggle to remember the English term for some of the words I use. 80 Embassy Direct

When reprimanding someone, it sounds so much more effective in the hard, definitive tones of German. 'Stop it now!' has been replaced with, 'Hohe auf jetzt!' accompanied by the stamping of a foot and 'Sofort!' for extra emphasis, and I can report much success with its usage. Accolades and affectionate endearments sound much better in Turkish. In our house, 'how sweet' has been replaced with 'Çok Şeker', or 'Çok Tatlim'. Even more satisfying than the Turkish endearments, is the use of the word 'Tamam', when wanting to say, 'okay'. Just try saying 'Tamam' out loud. Go ahead, I dare you. Feel how the M's swirl beautifully around the mouth, giving the impression of an extra nod and 'hmmm' of assent. From the first moment I used it, I have been unable to use the word 'okay' with as much conviction and purpose as before. 'Tamam' was given the lead role, and is a permanent feature in our home vocabulary now.

Swahili is another language filled with gratifying words that can replace their English counterparts with ease. I didn't put as much effort as I could have into learning Swahili. Having exhausted myself learning Turkish out of necessity in our previous posting, I gave myself some time off, and picked up and held on to words that it gave me pleasure to use. Take the word 'Kidogo' for example. This useful and utterly pleasurable word is used to indicate the term 'just a little'.

‘Would you like the chicken stew?' 'Kidogo, tafadhali (a little bit, please).' Did you get some sleep last night?' 'Oh, you know, kidogo.' See what I mean? Then there's the term 'pole sana,' which means 'I'm sorry' much like the South African term 'shame,' does. It's normally accompanied with a sympathetic pat on the back and a slow shake of the head. But just learning the tasty words in a language is not enough. Every language is layered and nuanced, and some words are used in a few different contexts. 'Pole' (pronounced poleh) or 'pole pole' was first introduced to me with a different meaning. It is used to indicate that one should go slowly, or calm down. So when someone pushed ahead of me in a queue at the shops (a regular occurrence in Nairobi, I might add) and I called him out on it, he replied with 'Pole.' I assumed he was telling me to hold my horses and stop complaining. Anger and irritation at the incident swirled in me for weeks until I learned the other meaning of the word. I realised that he wasn't telling me to calm down, he was apologising. So you see, it is useful to learn all the possible meanings of the words you'd like to use. I've kept my favourite word for last. Sure, I like the German word 'GemĂźtlichkeit' to describe cordiality and comfort. And I love that the word for 'peach' in Turkish is 'Ĺžeftali'. Using the Polish word Kochane to

It can also be used to indicate that a gathering, say at your house, where the guests are absolutely refusing to leave even though it's two in the morning, is over. If said while standing up with a slow stretch and a yawn with the right amount of regret in your voice, it can give the impression that it is not you who wants the gathering to end, but that sadly, the time has come, for everyone to bugger off. This word also can be used to woo your darling. Coo-ed after offering sentiments of love, admiration and the promise of pleasure, this word beckons your beloved to follow you. Simply add on the term 'my love' or Habibi.

refer to your beloved also gives you a distinctive, rather impressive edge.

The word I am speaking of is the Arabic word "Yallah", a prized word in my eclectic vocabulary, meaning 'come', or 'let's go'. I urge you to experience its usage and adopt it as your own. It is my gift to you. Yallah, it is free!

But the word I am referring to can be used effectively in a variety of situations. It can be summoned when you'd like someone (usually your child who is not listening to you) to do something with speed, and when spoken with the correct level of severity, has the immediate effect of whipping the kids into action.

Colour your world with words you learn from the many amazing places you experience in your life as an expat. Retaining those expressions we learn through our travels, keeps those special places and experiences close to our hearts, much more effectively than any photos ever could.

In search of the mythical

Javan Rhino with Rocco Olivier

by Elnette Jones

Feature

A planned holiday to Bali ended up with a detour into the Javan jungles, on a quest to nd the elusive Javan rhino. This type of change to itenerary is to be expected, when traveling with Rocco Oliver, whose adventurous streak is hard to keep in check. Bali was our nal destination, and as much as I looked forward to the beaches, shopping and all the island has to offer, our Javan quest ended up being an adventure worth sharing. After landing at a very crowded Jakarta airport on the 1st of June 2015, we went on a wild four hour drive that would leave South African taxi drivers quivering in their seats. Our destination was Cinde Wulung Bed & Resto, a cosy ve star guesthouse a few meter from the beach. There we met up with members of the Friends of Rhino movement over dinner, and I could feel my excitement go up a notch at the prospect of this turning into a real adventure. The next morning, we travelled for a few hours to get to the Unjung Kulon National Park to start our safari. The incredible team of rangers assigned to our mission included a tracker, a cook and a translator. The tracker, Serian, is someone whose survival skills are to be admired. He skilfully transformed a coconut into water and a snack within minutes. He knew which plants to use for dry eyes, and even claims to know a cure for cancer. We learned from him that a Javan rhino always steps in her front tracks with her back feet, but nds it harder as her tummy grows when pregnant. This enables him to tell that there will soon be a new baby rhino.

“ once again surrounded by the lights of a thousand reies. “

The views were also spectacular. Our rst day walking we covered just a few kilometres, most of which were in the jungle. But with the sounds of the waves nearby and glimpses of the ocean caught between leaves and creepers in the dense forest, reminded us that we were on the coast. The regular sightings of rhino tracks kept us excited, but we were not lucky to see any rhino on day one. We slept at a cabin at Karangranjang, a stone's throw from the beach, where reies turned the night into a fairy wonderland.

We covered a considerably longer distance through the jungle on day two. There were not many animals to be seen, most of them choosing to hide from us in the lush, the thick vegetation. We considered ourselves to be lucky to have seen two species of monkeys, ying geckos and komodo dragons. Having made camp later in the afternoon, we attempted to see rhino again on a 16km beach walk. The idea was to explore a regularly visited wallow next to the river, in an effort to catch a glimpse of the as yet elusive Javan rhino. Yet again we had no luck. Dejected, we began to accept the fact that we might not see the rhino at all on our expedition. It was already time to leave. Then, we saw a glimpse of a rhino disappearing behind a dune in the thinning light. As quickly as we spotted it, it disappeared. With proof that the rhino were there, around us , we returned to camp with high spirits, once again surrounded by the lights of a thousand reies. On the last day of our expedition, we walked for ve kilometres to where a speed boat awaited us . We were taken to the Ayung river, hoping still, to get a more concrete sighting of the Javan rhino. We were taken up the river by canoe and stopped to visit more rhino wallows but we were not lucky enough to catch them during their daily mud bath. Our disappointment for not being able to nd a wellbehaved Javan rhino, posing for a photo shoot just for us, was short lived. We closed in on our snorkelling destination, welcomed by a ying sh arching over our boat. It was the nal destination on our journey. A gorgeous little island surrounded with coral and colourful sh awaited us. What more could any adventurer ask for? If you love rugged adventures, and like to go on an expedition to search for this highly endangered species with qualied guides you can e-mail: expeditions@thesafariguys.com for further information.

The American International School

in Johannesburg By Dominique Pholehli

Embassy Direct recently spoke to Dr Andy Page-Smith, director of the American International School in Johannesburg and its sister campus in Pretoria, about how international schools cater to the needs of their students, the majority of whom are expatriates, moving to different countries with their families every few years. Dr Page-Smith has been the director of the school for the past five years, having previously been posted in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Qatar. He speaks with passion of the growth of the school, and the emphasis he and his team put on maintaining a sense of community in an environment where there is a regular flow of students in and out of the school. 80 Embassy Direct

Dr Andy Page-Smith, director of the American International School in Johannesburg He continues, explaining that in the international school environment, children learn to understand that people come with very different values, perspectives, strengths and priorities. This understanding, says Page-Smith, becomes an intrinsic part of the culture of the school. He notes that whereas many local independent South African schools, for example, are dominated by male sport, an international school strives to be more balanced and broad-based, catering equally for students driven by service, the arts, academics or sport. PageSmith also says that international schools have a unique culture in that children coming in are often transient.

When asked what the main differences between local and international school are, Dr Page-Smith talks of how local schools are designed to cater for the needs of the local inhabitants and their expectations, and therefore generally aim to prepare students to go to university in their home country. "Local schools are also designed to meet the level of education prevalent in that country, and to incorporate local culture and language," says PageSmith. "A uniqueness of international schools is that they are multi-cultural. A local school may represent up to three different cultures, whereas at the International School we have one hundred and seven different nationalities," he says.

"That is both a benefit and a weakness," says Page-Smith, "The weakness is that with regularly changing schools, you don't necessarily have those life-long buddies you went through school with. Likewise, you learn very quickly how to make friends, and you learn how to adjust to different people's feelings." When dealing with the challenge of managing the constant movement of pupils in and out of the school, Dr Page-Smith says that a large amount of focus is given to the social-emotional wellbeing of the students, and with that, creating a sense of community within the school for parents. There are five fulltime counsellors in the school, and a range of staff who give particular emphasis to creating a sense of community in the school, including parents. All teachers are also cognisant of the challenges that transient pupils face. There are regular induction programs and check-in systems and processes built around ensuring that pupils feel settled and assimilated. 80 Embassy Direct

Information about events in the school is also consistently communicated as if being heard for the first time, so that newcomers remain in the loop.

"We are trying to map what the culture of service is. We want kids thinking, 'I need to be doing something for others throughout my life, and that should just be how I should live my life,'" he says.

There is a challenge for international schools to maintain a certain level of consistency in the curriculums from school to school, though each of them functions independently. Two main systems followed by international schools are the British IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) curriculum developed by the University of Cambridge, and the International Baccalaureate or IB program, with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Further to that, Page-Smith says that international schools tend to focus on best practice conventions from around the world rather than a set curriculum from one system or another. AISJ, leaning more toward being an American International school, offers the IB program. He says that the Office of Overseas Schools, a U.S. Government body, is currently developing a set of standards for curriculum, which schools can use as a benchmark to ensure a certain level of consistency. While each school operates independently and provides its own offering, by the time pupils are ready to be assessed for university entrance or the standardised IB or IGCSE exams, they are properly prepared.

The school as an entity also does service, by offering a scholarship programme including full board on campus, for students from disadvantaged communities locally.

International schools can sometimes fall short when it comes to ensuring that students learn about the country they are living in. Page-Smith is aware of this shortfall, and to this end, the school has certain activities and curriculum-based programs that include learning about South Africa. In Social Sciences, for example, each year a unit of enquiry with local emphasis, is completed. AISJ is probably ahead of the game compared to other international schools, in that they combine an important part of the culture of the school, namely service, with giving the students an opportunity to learn more about the communities that surround them. It is of vital importance to Page-Smith that students do not only do community service to tick off a box on the school to-do list, but have a deep understanding of what service really means.

80 Embassy Direct

After living abroad for twenty-one years, Page-Smith has learned a thing or two about embracing and valuing the cultures you are exposed to. He understands that cultures are nuanced and that there are seemingly small differences in approach or manner of speaking or body language that can be misread. On international learning, he says, "Don't get ahead of yourself and think you understand a culture if you've never really lived it." Page-Smith also has useful, practical advice for parents who are moving to a new country on an expatriate posting: Have a positive demeanour and look for the opportunities you are going to have, rather than criticise what doesn't work around you. If you have a positive demeanour it will quickly rub off on your children. Look after children's basic needs when moving to a new country. Those include feeling safe, making friends, and having good pursuits. Expats who are having a hard time settling in to a new country end up bringing their kids down with them in the process. Talk to them constantly about how the new place they are going to will be different to what they know. Teach them to articulate the values and the differences they are seeing, rather than assuming those values are wrong because they are different to what you know. Be careful not to be ethnocentric and push that onto your children. There is nothing wrong with having a bit of refuge. It's ok if you miss home. When asked what the difference is between an American International School and an International School, Page-Smith cites the example of AISJ, where 24% of students are American, making that the largest group of pupils in the school. There are certain governance rules that apply to American participation, but the school does not have specific elements, like the teaching of history for example, that need to be particularly American. Instead, Page-Smith says, the school has American flavour, and is in keeping with the best international educational practices from around the world.

He goes on to compare AISJ to the American International School in Singapore, which has an 85% American population and follows a strictly American curriculum. So there are varying degrees of 'American' in American International Schools, with AISJ leaning more towards being international and AISS more toward being American. Page-Smith rates his school's standing and reputation amongst international teachers as being of vital importance, being a key factor in being able to recruit the right people.

"I've got to compete with the best schools in Europe and Asia to attract a high calibre of staff. So our brand name as a school where teachers know are going to grow and develop professionally is important to me." The school, under Page-Smith's leadership for the past five years has grown from strength to strength, not only in student numbers, but also in expanding their wellresourced, state-of-the art facilities and attracting the best international teachers in the world.

The Chapter formally opened its doors at an inaugural meeting in Johannesburg in April 2008, the most important business metropole in Southern Africa. Thus, Swiss private enterprises are in the position to strengthen their presence in the booming South African market. SwissCham Southern Africa – South Africa Chapter is an apolitical non-profit organization, which seeks to contribute to the expansion of economic, commercial and cultural relations between Switzerland and Southern Africa. SCSA-SAC also functions as the South African pillar of the bilateral Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and is the official Chapter for the whole of South Africa. The presence of Swiss enterprises in South Africa has a tradition of more than 100 years. Well-known Swiss enterprises were until now organised within the Swiss Business Council (SBC). In future, they introduce their network of connections and know how into the new SCSA South Africa Chapter. Thereby, SME’s being interested in the South African market now have the opportunity to benefit from the profound experience united in the new Chapter. Through its creativity, its growth and the best infrastructure in Africa, the South African market offers unique business opportunities. The SCSA South Africa Chapter in Johannesburg co-operates closely with the Embassy of Switzerland and the Swiss Business Hub (SBH) in Pretoria, and is fully integrated into the Business Network Switzerland® - Swiss Global Enterprise (SG-E). AMCHAM American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa The American Chamber of Commerce has been sustainably operating as a non-profit organisation in South Africa since 1977. We are the collective voice of U.S. investment in South Africa and through our elective board of directors and committees, we serve South African/American commerce and industry with our primary focus on U.S. investment in South Africa. We're proud that American companies in South Africa invest sustainably to uplift communities, and address unemployment, poverty and inequality. But what we're most proud of is the fact a survey of 89 U.S. companies in South Africa in 2014 revealed that over 221 400 people in this country are directly and indirectly benefiting from our presence here. We're proud that the companies we speak for are helping to feed, clothe and educate at least 885 600 children. At the end of the day, we measure our success in the broadness of a child's smile who has just been given a wholesome meal or a brand new pair of shoes. You can judge a company by the impact it makes on people. These are the companies we represent. Amcham focuses on four main areas: Providing platforms for networking amongst our members. Hosting monthly forums on thematic business topics to enable our members to learn more about certain topics, to encourage discussion and promote problem-solving between peers. Drawing up submissions (both written and oral) on proposed legislation that will impact our member companies' ability to do business in South Africa. Promoting good corporate governance in everything we do. We have had a substantial impact on the South African business landscape in the last 36 years and will continue to work towards assisting our partners and stakeholders to make South Africa a competitive business destination.

Intimate and luxuriously chic Molori Safari Lodge - Madikwe, South Africa The word “Molori” meaning “to dream” in the local language of seTswana, truly captures the essence of Molori Safari, recognised throughout the world as one of South Africa's most luxurious game lodges. This five-suite retreat, originally built as the owners' private family retreat, was constructed in 2007 in the heart of the 75,000-hectare malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve. In 2009 the owners decided to open the property to the public, at which point the retreat received a complete makeover transforming it into the intimate and luxuriously chic lodge it has become today. Situated 400kms northwest of Johannesburg in South Africa's North West province, the reserve borders Botswana. The lodge offers breathtaking views of an expansive valley and the Dwarsberg Mountains, as well as an abundance of bird life and game including the Madikwe “Super Seven” which is the Big Five but includes the highly endangered wild dog and cheetah. Be rendered breathless Marataba Safari Lodge - Limpopo, South Africa Marataba is a malaria-free 23000 hectare private concession within the Big5 Marakele National Park (Limpopo, South Africa). Just four hours from Johannesburg, this is a sanctuary where busy people can find themselves again by connecting with nature. We were rendered breathless by the dramatic Waterberg mountains, vast plains, rich animal diversity and winding rivers cutting through the landscape of the Marakele National Park. Rich red mountain rock meets lush green plains (where you will find yellowwood and cedar trees, 5m high cycads and tree ferns). All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here. Marataba Safari Lodge is a simple extension of the natural environment beyond its walls – rich, bold, organic and patently magnificent. Whether you prefer your own company or that of new-found friends, there are a number of spots from which to soak up the view – hammock, pool lounger or grassy patch. Whether game drive, walking trail, sunset river excursion on Miss Mara, or a private dinner for two, there is never enough time to exhaust the many ways there are to love this place. Each of the 15 canvas-and-stone Tented Suites is tastefully furnished and decorated with a contemporary twist. Whether sharing it with lover, friend or family (or keeping it all to yourself), the interior is ample, and the attention to detail impeccable.

Mother Nature‛s subtle signature Madikwe Safari Lodge - Madikwe, South Africa Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 hectare malaria-free reserve located northwest of Johannesburg (an easy four hour drive) along the Botswana border. It doesn‛t take much to be enamoured by Madikwe. Everything about this place is vast – its landscapes, its heavens, its wildlife. This is rugged Africa, and then some! The rich and undulating landscape is punctuated by enormous volcanic intrusions (known as Inselbergs) and the unique topography reveals astonishing wildlife sightings. Madikwe's animal population includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, spotted hyena, giraffe, antelope and the endangered Cape hunting dog. In excess of 300 resident and migrant bird species tint the ample skies. Madikwe Safari Lodge offers three luxury lodges, each with its own appeal. Lelapa Lodge is for families. Each of the 12 Suites is spacious, comfortable and ever respectful of the natural environment beyond. Indoor and outdoor showers, private plunge pool and wood-burning fireplace are just some of the added creature comforts to enhance Mother Nature's subtle signature. Two rooms are Family Suites, and have a second bedroom with children's bunk beds, and sleeper couch. We have taken a lot of time to design a kids' menu of activities, which will keep juniors entertained, and parents relaxed. Kopano Lodge comprises just 4 Suites (each with private plunge pool) which share a magnificent common area. Fine dining to the hoot of an owl, the roar of a lion or the crazed whoop of a hyena is the stuff that dreams are made of. With only 4 Suites (each with private plunge pool), Dithaba Lodge is well suited to a group of friends or family members making it their own while on safari. Or for those who simply prefer the sound of nature and little else.

An Extraordinary African Experience Camp Jabulani - Mpumalanga, South Africa It is not easy to define just one distinctive feature when it comes to Camp Jabulani. Although it was originally born solely out of the need to create a self-sustaining home for a herd of orphaned elephants, it has evolved into an African wildlife sanctuary which promises the discerning traveller the pinnacle of luxury experiential travel. The core philosophy of Camp Jabulani (a Relais & Chateaux property) is based on extraordinary experiences. Highly personalized elephant interactions within The Big6 Kapama Reserve, coupled with private safaris and bush walks present a multi-dimensional African experience in a natural wilderness. An extraordinary experience in the wild must be mirrored by an extraordinary experience in-house. The Roode Family has known this reserve intimately for decades, and they invite you to make this very special Lodge a home of your own. Sublime accommodations (in 6 luxury suites and an exclusive family villa), gastronomic masterpieces, service excellence (with a near 100% satisfaction score on Tripadvisor) and personally crafted itineraries translate into an utterly exclusive stay. At Camp Jabulani, every client is a King. Older sister to Camp Jabulani, and also in the custody of The Roode Family, is The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC). This progressive conservation facility is home to a number of orphaned, injured and vulnerable animal species.

Its core areas of focus are the cheetah, and victims of rhino poaching (including orphaned babies, and rhinos that have themselves survived). Camp Jabulani's visitors are afforded the unique and exclusive opportunity of experiencing the HESC firsthand during a private tour. The Camp Jabulani footprint is unparalleled and everlasting. That each of the five physical senses will be pushed to its pleasurable limit goes without question. It's the impact on the more subtle senses that is profound. This truly is an experience of a lifetime.

Over R100 000 has been raised by the International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) for South African charities. The money was raised at IDSA's charity fundraising Golden Gala dinner on Saturday evening, 30 May, at the St George Hotel. Among the 230 people attending were more than 30 IDSA members and nearly as many Ambassadors and High Commissioners.

IDSA Board member Nazra Pratap, Ndileka Mandela, and Gala Committee member Katherine Maguire

In welcoming guests, IDSA's President, Ms. Rana Mansour, noted that every year the association seeks to raise funds to help vulnerable women and children in South Africa. “Our prime concern is to help underprivileged groups, especially women and children. Last year alone, IDSA donated over R170 000.00 to ease the plight of women and children through various charities, in addition to direct donations of food, toiletries, and toys and hours of volunteer work,” she said. The Guest Speaker was Ms.Ndileka Mandela, the rst grandchild of Nelson Mandela, She spoke about the Thembekile Mandela Foundation, named in honor of her father, and explained about the foundation's aspirations and goals to uplift rural communities through its education and health programs.

Entertainment was provided by a traditional Afro-jazz artist called Morayks. This dynamic performer is well known in Gauteng for his high-voltage shows which inevitably get everyone on their feet. Morayks is an accomplished musician who has performed with the likes of multiple Grammy winner Bebe Winans and the legendary South African singer Vusi Mahlasela. Recently Morayks won Best African Jazz Album and was a nominee in the Best Sepedi Album at the 9th Annual South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards. His debut album-Lesotho was released in September 2013. Nearly 300 rafe tickets were sold with prizes ranging from expensive bottles of Mum Champagne to Bosch kitchen food processors to overnights at boutique hotels. There was also a silent auction with unique safari packages on offer. We would like to thank everyone who attended and made donations for this fundraiser.
