ARTISAN OASIS
Studio Location: Dili, Timor-Leste Project Type: Public/Education Unit Code: ARCT5202 Studio Coordinator: Dr Rosangela Tenorio
‘Studio Timor 4’ In Timor-Leste’s evolving landscape, Artisan Oasis stands as a cultural stronghold, preserving traditional craftsmanship in Tais making, woodwork, ceramics, and basketry.
By retaining key elements of the site and drawing inspiration from the revered Uma Lulik and symbolic Tais, the architectural design embodies the ‘Inheritance’ ethos, integrating indigenous elements and mountainous forms. The site’s three volumes and organic landscaping symbolize the coexistence of nature and tradition. The Design Library, with its dynamic public spaces and private artist residences, reflects Timorese culture’s vitality.
Beyond a repository, Artisan Oasis is a sanctuary blending past and present, fostering cultural rejuvenation in the heart of Timor-Leste, echoing collective memories and inspiring future generations.

BCP CENTRE
Studio Location: Beaconsfield Perth, WA Project Type: Public Unit Code: ARCT5201 Studio Coordinator: Gemma Hohnen
‘Crisis Studio 6: Material Matters’ What can architecture do for climate change? Crisis Studio 6 explores the role of material selection and ways of designing in the context of a community centre to minimise the impact on the remnants of our natural environment, focusing on addressing climate change challenges.
Beaconsfield Community Pavilion [BCP] Centre, designed with climate-responsive principles and community engagement, prioritizes sustainable materials like timber and hempcrete. The three pavilions, prefabricated offsite for rapid construction and minimal disruption, foster social cohesion through a circular economy for adaptability. The flat roof design integrates passive strategies and solar panels, ensuring a low-carbon footprint. Rainwater capture, ground frame pin foundations, and embankments minimize environmental impact. BCP Centre showcases ultra-low embodied carbon construction, serving as a model for climate-responsive design, community empowerment, and innovative prefabrication practices.

External decking allows for reticulation of services and adaptability of the interior spaces.
A minimally-pitched / flat roof profile was preferred for its capacity to achieve this internal spatial consistency.
Solar radiation on Summer & Winter Solstice tested on flat roof. It gains more solar radiation and is distributed equally on the roof surface. It is relatively stable, aiding in PV panel solar installation and energy harvesting.

Studio Location: Shekou Shenzhen, China Project Type: Public - Museum Unit Code: ARCT3000 Studio Coordinator: Dr Fernando Jerez
‘The Disappeared Shekou Fishing Port’ Shekou Fishing Port, once a top-tier national fishing port in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District, now holds historical significance in the Shenzhen Bay Coastal Leisure Zone. The Shekou Maritime Museum, strategically located within the port, uses Corten steel to mimic the appearance of old fishing boats. Its design, inspired by the boats, features segmented spaces, with the lobby serving as a transition between private and public areas. The museum’s innovative design includes openings and skylights for natural light, creating a futuristic atmosphere. Overall, the Shekou Maritime Museum is a unique and memorable structure, preserving the history of the old fishing port.

GRAPEVINE GETAWAY
Photo Real Rendering Location: Willow Bridge Estate, Ferguson Valley, WA Project Type: Hospitality Unit Code: ARCT5536 Teaching Staff: Chaz Flint
‘Idyllic Cabin Getaway’ This unit focuses on developing Photorealism skills using Autodesk’s 3D Studio Max, VRay, Forest Pack, and Photoshop Generative Fill. Students learn real-world lighting, HDRI setups, materials, effects, and 3D manipulation. The assignment involves detailed design and modeling of a 75m2 cabin, fully realized in 3D with the chosen client and location, mimicking the style of a selected architectural photographer in visualizations.
The client I chose was Willow Bridge Estate, a family-owned and highly regarded winery in Western Australia. They were seeking a sustainable cabin design for a tranquil vineyard retreat, focusing on enhancing the wine-tasting experience. The left-to-right hierarchy includes welcoming outdoor areas, an open living space, transitional areas, and private spaces for optimal visitor comfort. Grapevine Cabin prioritizes sustainability, featuring a rainwater collection system, a solar panel system, extended eaves for shade, and operable louvres for natural ventilation. Meticulously designed, it offers an eco-friendly and comfortable off-grid living experience.

NATURAL PAVILION
Bio-Based Materials in Global Settings, Group Work Location: UWA School of Design, WA Project Type: Public Unit Code: ARCT5885 Teaching Staff: Dr Rosangela Tenorio Group Member: Eugene Tiong, Jason Zhang, Wanyi Ning, Yuerong Wu
‘A Design Pitch Competition’ This abstract introduces a revolutionary pavilion, merging sustainable architecture and biotechnology. Constructed with mycelium and Chidori joint technology, the pavilion is adaptable for diverse uses like classrooms or outdoor activities. Mycelium provides a sustainable foundation, and Chidori joints enhance both structure and aesthetics.
The design prioritizes sustainability, ensuring seamless integration with the natural surroundings. Easy assembly/disassembly fosters versatility, enabling relocation with minimal environmental impact. The pavilion’s adaptable nature accommodates diverse spatial requirements, transitioning effortlessly from a classroom to an open space.
By combining mycelium and Chidori joints, the pavilion sets a forward-thinking standard for sustainable architecture, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and advanced construction techniques, showcasing a vision for harmonious integration with the natural environment. DE KROOK MEDIA LIBRARY
Construction Studies Location: Ghent, Belgium Project Type: Public/Education Architect: RCR arquitectes Unit Code: ARCT3030 Unit Coordinator: Andrea Quagliola
‘De Krook Media Library_RCR arquitectes’ The assessment evaluates two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses based on completeness, legibility, and graphical quality. It assesses understanding of structural elements, services, materials, and assembly. The task involves selecting a large-scale building, studying its construction, and creating two A1-sized drawings.
I chose De Krook Library in Ghent by RCR arquitectes, a versatile space with a bold architectural design featuring visible steel construction. It complements the nearby “Boekentoren,” mirroring the riverbend for optimized communal spaces. Internally, a double-height agora fosters connections. Influenced by Arte Povera, raw materials like metal and concrete showcase an honest aesthetic. Sustainability is prioritized through prefabricated metal elements and water transportation of materials.
