Good News Or What! Wonderful news for everybody concerned for animal welfare - The Ayuntamiento of Arona have contracted a company called PROTEANIMALOY to help deal with the problem of abandoned and suffering animals in South Tenerife. LA NEWS interviewed the team that will be carrying out the work. Eloy and Fernando are the field workers and Connie is the administrator. Their duties include rescuing abandoned animals and transferring them to Accion Del Sol refuge who are contracted to take them in. And these guys aren’t just any old dog catchers! Eloy is an

experienced dog psychologist and trainer and they are both fully qualified in animal first aid.

Inside this issue:

It’s so upsetting to think of such distressed and suffering dogs out there.

What a relief that we are no longer on our own, trying to capture them so that we can give them the help they need.

Importantly, they have a sincere concern for animals. For them, it is a career choice and not just a job.

To report an abandonded animal ring 010 (Arona Ayuntamiento) who will then deploy the team.

But it gets better! They will also take over the pursuit of cruelty cases— Denuncia de Maltratos. That’s a great step forward for animal protection on the island.

LA PAWS is delighted to have the PROTEANIMALOY guys on board. We look forward to working with them and helping them in any way.

the island’, she said.

She has been involved with Live Arico for the past 3 years. Angie will cheerfully turn her hand to anything that benefits the dogs. She began at the refuge, picking up dog muck, and collecting blankets and donations for the refuge.

But when her job hours increased and she had to give up the shop shifts, that didn’t stop her helping animals. She turned to fostering instead. She currently cares for Bess, the beautiful, gentle podenco type dog who is still waiting for a forever home. Angie devotedly carried out 4 months of physio on Bess to bring her back to health.

We agree. But that’s only because of Angie herself and all the other wonderful supporters like her that make up the organization.

When the refuge closed, she was still determined to do something to help so she moved to the Los Cris shop where her experience as a shop manageress helped to transform the local. At the same time,

Volunteer’s party The Volunteer’s Party was held on March 9th at the Heritage Bar in Los Cris. It was a joint event, hosted by K9, Cats Welfare and LA Paws. It was a pleasant opportunity to mingle, catch up with old friends and put faces to names. The sun blazed down as everybody relaxed while listening to the artists who all performed for free. Then the Timelords stepped up the tempo with their set and

soon the place was rocking. There were loads of great tombola and raffle prizes so nearly everybody won something. Then it was time to tuck into the handsome spread which was met with looks of hopeful expectation from the canine contingent. No doubt they got their share too. Little Rose, now greatly recovered, looked a picture as she had been specially clipped for the occasion.

The evening was rounded off with a quiz and Los Cris Shop team carried off first prize of a bottle of Ballantyne’s. Finally, the MC from K9 gave a speech of appreciation for all the work that the volunteers had put in over the year. He also praised the spirit of co-operation and friendship that flourishes within our animal fraternity. Everyone gave a cheer of agreement. A lovely, happy day was had by all.

Dave’s shit shirt night. The Los Cris shop has enjoyed a boost in trade from an unexpected source.

Sadly, not every husband can be persuaded to up the fashion stakes.

Our men’s wear department has an extensive range of vibrant, summer shirts, many hardly worn. In fact some still have the packing creases in them.

“I’m not wearing this. Someone will think I’m a deckchair and sit on me”, moaned one donator.

It seems that ladies expect their other halves to get in the holiday spirit. Time to shake off those staid, dull colours and be more adventurous.

This was the first Live Arico shop. In the early days, it was a runaway success and generated a healthy income for the dogs.

As we now have shops in the resort areas, people are less inclined to make a special trip over to Silencio

Many people from the beach resorts would take the bus over for a day out, to stock up on books and hunt for bargains. But in recent times, the situation has changed. David McKenna has been at the shop since it opened and remembers when the local was a radio station with Katy Kennedy on air. “There are just too many second-hand

This is what you have all achieved in February. We paid out 1392E for food which was delivered to the refuge at Fasnia and 464E for food delivered to Agua Dulce.

In addition, we were able to donate 100E to Sangha Animal Sanctuary at San Miguel. A further 50E was paid to Poochies Pet Hotel towards the rescue dogs they are kindly looking after.

I’m sure you’ll all be happy with the considerable sum we have raised and distributed this month. In addition, donors have given for the benefit of specific animals, such as little Rose. Her treatment still continues and we await the final total.

LA Secretary Steps Down This month we say good-bye to our Secretary, Susannah Saavedra Cruz. We cannot thank her enough for the excellent contribution she has made to the organization .

As an internationally respected animal behaviourist, she has a wealth of knowledge and hands on experience with animals, including tigers! She has even trained animals for films.

Susannah became involved with Live Arico in 2004 and has been a committed supporter since.

As she is used to dealing with authorities at Government level, she was the best person to guide us through red tape and negotiations during her tenure.

LA NEWS interviewed her about her amazing career.

Volume 1, Issue 4

Although her career took her all over the

world, lecturing and as a consultant, she kept close contact and continued to advise us. She is currently commissioned by the Government of Tahiti to deal with their problem of invasive species. But in spite of her prestigious, exotic position, she will continue her LA support from afar. Good luck in Tahiti, Susannah. Enjoy those amazing beaches!

Several readers have pointed out a glaring error in our previous issues. We have been spelling Los Cris with an h! The only explanation for this is that the editor is an ignoramus! Nevertheless, supporters have appreciated hearing about what we are up to. “Where Does All The Money Go” is the most popular feature as it brings home what all the effort actually achieves for the animals. People outside the organization are also getting to know us as copies of LA NEWS are passed round. If anybody would like to get involved in our efforts to help the suffering and abandoned animals of Tenerife, please email Sue, our new president, on Sue@livearico.org

A.G.M. The Live Arico PAWS A.G.M. was held on Wednesday, 20th March at Bar 39 in Los Cris.

Mommio. Events Manager, Sharon Edens. Vocal Members: Michaela Bridges and Steve Sands.

Siobhan issued the 2013 Annual Report, a copy of which is available for every member.

Other Business included a discussion on increased collaboration with other organizations, fund-raising ideas and managing the collection boxes.

Well, they couldn’t let that happen and so LA PAWS was born. Now that the immediate danger has been averted, they are able to focus on moving the organization forward.

Sue gave an update on adoptions and the status of animals currently under veterinary care.

With the new committee in place, LA PAWS is poised to advance the animal welfare cause in Tenerife.

Firstly, credit is due to Sue and Siobhan for running LA PAWS in the interim period.

LA NEWS welcomes the new team on behalf of all our members and supporters. Good luck to them in their roles and thanks for taking on the difficult task.

The first item was the accounts which were agreed. Sue and Siobahn had compiled a large folder containing each and every receipt so that all present could inspect the raw data as well as the figures presented. Credit is due for all the hard work that went into such a competent and professional production. The next item was the election of the new committee and the results were as follows: President, Sue Havenhand. Vice President, Kerry Railton. Treasurer, Siobhan Ferguson. Secretary, Eugenio Da

They ensured the continuation of the organization with one priority—to guarantee the dogs were fed while awaiting the move to the new refuge. Then for as long as the dogs remained our responsibility. How easy it would have been for them to give up, but they refused to abandon the

animals. For if no one fed them, they would surely have had to be put down.

What a big responsibility! All those unfortunate animals depending on them for help. We are sure, that like Sue and Siobhan before them, the new team will never let the dogs down.
