Chairman’s Chat 2019 is here!!
The committee wishes all EPC members and their families a wonderful and prosperous 2019. Let us make 2019 the best year for EPC ever. I am sure that if we all pull together and achieve what we have planned for this year, we will succeed. The line-up of outings and workshops planned for 2019 are vast and varied and should appeal to a wide audience. Not only will these get-togethers expose members to new ideas, skills and experience, I am sure we will all get to know each other a little better. This interaction is essential in the all-round wellbeing of EPC. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you better. In this way, we can identify areas where members need improvement and focus on those areas. Putting this hand-in-hand with the mentorship program that Clare as initiated, will result in gains all-round. Please support this mentorship program. We all stand to gain from it. Big thanks to those members that have already registered. Take-up has been slow, but I am sure once others see it working, membership will improve. This also goes without saying that we appeal to all members to come forward with suggestions and improvements, especially related to those areas that they would like to improve. We are here to help each other. We all have something to learn, not matter how long we have been shooting or what star level we are on. Let us strive to share, cooperate and assist where required. Example is a lesson every person can read. I would like to ask you all to please review the proposed promotion criteria on the website, and included in this newsletter. It is based on and conforms to the guidelines as proposed by the PSSA. We are sure that you will see that the criteria are fair and reasonable and a vast improvement on the previous version. We have been more lenient regarding the salon acceptance requirements as we know that this can result in extra cost. Here’s to a better, improved and awesome EPC this year. Improvements have been made and will be made with the sole aim to reach this objective. We have to do this together. Regards, Dave

Lilly van Niekerk took this image at Cecil Mayhew’s Studio. Cecil invited some Edenvale Club members to test out his newly renovated studio. Cecil also organised this lovely young model that entertained us with her sparkling personality. We experimented with an aray of lights and props. In this image the model’s hair was the best prop of all. Lilly used the oppertunity to create this winning image.

Ansel Adams American Photographer Born: 1902 Died: 1984 American photographer and environmentalist known for his black and white photographs of the American West in Sierra Nevada and in Yosemite National Park. Ansel Easton Adams was born in 1902 in an upper-class family. His family migrated from Ireland in the early 1700s. He was the only child of Charles and Olive Adams. His paternal grandfather founded a successful lumber business, which was later run by Ansel’s father. His mother’s family came from Baltimore. His maternal grandfather had a successful Freight-Hauling business, but squandered his wealth in numerous investment ventures. His nose was broken and scared during the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 as an aftershock threw him up against a wall. After the death of his grandfather the family business was hit by the bank crisis of 1907 and by 1912, his family’s standard of living had been dearly impacted. Ansel was a hyperactive child prone to sickness. After being expelled from several schools due to his restlessness, at age 12, his father decided to tutor him at home with the help of professors and Ansel’s aunt.
He soon became interested in music and started learning the piano, but all changed when aged 14, his aunt gave him a copy of “In the Heart of the Sierras”. The photographs by Georges Fiske were a revelation and Ansel persuaded his parents to visit Yosemite National Park during the following vacations. Equiped with a Kodak Box Brownie n°1, Ansel Adams first visited Yosemite National Park in 1916. Amazed by the site and the light, he returned to Yosemite National Park the following year with better cameras and a tripod. He will return regularly to Yosemite National Park where he will even meet his future wife, Virginia Best. At age 17, Adams joined the Sierra Club, a wildlife preservation group. He will remain a convinced environmentalist and a member of the Sierra Club his entire life. His work will promote the goals of the Sierra Club and bring environmental issues to light. In 1932, Adams founded the group f/64 with photographer friend Edward Weston, to promote their independent and modernist vision of photography. It is with Fred Archer that Adams will develop the Zone System (1939-40), a technique which allows photographers to define the proper exposure on negatives and adjust the contrasts on the prints. The depth and clarity of Ansel Adam’s photographs illustrate this technique. Initially, despite their size and weight, Ansel Adams used large format cameras as they offered a high resolution and a sharp image.
The timeless photographs and the striking visual beauty clearly characterize Ansel Adams’ photographs. In 1952, he was also one of the founders of Aperture magazine. He died in 1984 from a cardio Vascular disease. Shortly after his death in 1984, the Minarets Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest was renamed the Ansel Adams Wilderness. In 1985, a peak in Sierra Nevada, was named Mount Ansel Adams. He was survived by his wife, two children and 5 grand children.

1. Select Canvas [Frame] Size under the heading “ Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add the border to the image and make your adjustments. If you do not wish to add a border go to step 2 2. Select image size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop – Tick the following boxes : Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample image. 3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high 4. When resizing a horizontal image ( Landscape ) enter 1920 pixels in the Width box and the vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the “ Resample Image” box . If the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a value more than 1080 pixels ( say 1096 pixels ) then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels and the horizontal size will automatically reduce below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the “ Resample Image” box. 5. When resizing a vertical image (Portrait) enter 1080 pixels in the Height Box . The value in the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image if you have ticked the “ Resample Image “ box 6. The maximum image data file size is 2000 (2MB) Kilobytes in the JPEG format . Note that if a border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size to a maximum of 2000 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified 2000Kb (2MB). 7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be selected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/ Convert to Profile.

My first taste of photography was through my dad, he was always taking family and holiday photos and developing the pictures in a bathroom darkroom. At the age of six I got my first Kodak 110 camera. All the family holidays were to the coast or Kruger Park where most of my photo’s were taken. From the age of about 12 I had the fortune of going to all the racing at the kyalami race track with pit access. This is where the learning started, how to pan, light position, action etc. From the basic happy snap camera I got my first SLR, a Pentax ME Super with various lenses, filters and a flash. I used this camera for a good few years until the dawn of digital and other hobbies and interests took pole position for many years until my eldest daughter started drum majorettes. This is when I bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D5000 with kit lenses and a Sigma 150-500 and was made the official drum majorette photographer for the next 5 years. The photographic bug bit again and this was when I was invited to join the Edenvale photographic club through my father in-law. Through the club I tried all types of photography and will try my hand at all genres but still prefer the photography with fast cars and bikes. I take a lot of my photo’s in and around race tracks like off road rally’s, motocross, speedway and freestyle.
Photography has been a great hobby for many years and hopefully many years to come. Photography I think is a good excuse to get out in the sun (early morning / late afternoon), fresh air and to be with friends old and new. I am hoping 2019 will be less work and more photo time and weather permitting.

These promotion criteria are based on the PSSA guidelines, & take into account that the PSSA calculated their promotions based on one meeting a month, where 4 photos are submitted. The EPC has two meetings a month, & 6 photos per member are submitted in one month.
