“I think the work that the Institute is doing ... is extremely important ... for creating the competences that the new leaderships of the future will have to have in order to rule Europe properly, which means not thinking as nationals but as proper Europeans.” Federica Mogherini High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice President of the European Commission
“Here at the EUI our 40 years of experience are focused entirely on doctoral studies and research. We are a small, selective, and supportive intellectual community where you become part of academic life the moment you arrive. We have a first class completion and placement rate and our alumni go on to excellent careers. The EUI is different from any other institution in the world and is setting the global standard for doctoral studies.” Joseph H. H. Weiler President of the European University Institute
A LEADER FOR EXCELLENCE IN DOCTORAL STUDIES With forty years of experience focusing exclusively on doctoral studies and research, the EUI is a global leader in defining high-quality postgraduate education. An international institution with a European focus, the EUI offers one of the most culturally diverse doctoral programmes in the world. Over 1000 scholars from over 60 countries combine to create a uniquely multi-national community where no single intellectual culture dominates. With leading scholars in economics, history, law and political and social sciences, all four departments promote interdisciplinary research and teaching. Doctoral and postdoctoral studies complement each other and are strongly linked with the cutting-edge research carried out across the Institute. The campus has a first-class library, and is home to the Historical Archives of the European Union, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies.

A GENUINE INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL COMMUNITY Though international and with global reach, the EUI’s small, selective and supportive community ensures that researchers from all over the world feel at home from the very first day. Researchers are involved in seminars, working groups and many academic events within and across departments where they may participate and present their work. Teaching and learning among EUI members is multi-directional. The diverse academic backgrounds of our faculty and researchers stimulate lively debate, comparison, and the sharing of knowledge. At the hub of vast and growing networks of scholars, members of the EUI community benefit from the many conferences, workshops and other events hosted by the Institute and its many international research projects.
THE DOCTORAL PROGRAMME A PhD from the EUI is an internationally recognised and respected qualification. The EUI offers a four year grant-based doctoral programme which is structured by clear academic rules and standards in line with those of top institutions around the world. Supervision of doctoral dissertations is thorough and intense, and high quality is ensured through regular quality assessments by supervisees. Guided by a code of practice, each faculty member follows the work of approximately 8 researchers. In recent surveys close to 90% of supervisees report being highly or considerably satisfied with the quality of supervision, which is a very high level compared to other institutions in Europe and abroad. The EUI also offers support for developing teaching skills, academic publications and postdoctoral careers. The focus of the EUI doctoral programme is to craft a professional academic researcher, not simply a manuscript. Finally, researchers may enrich their PhD programme with research missions around the world or on exchange programmes with partner institutions.

IN THE HILLS OF FIESOLE The EUI is located in the scenic hills of Fiesole, approximately eight kilometres from the centre of Florence, Italy. The cradle of the Italian Renaissance, home to Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Machiavelli, Florence has been at the heart of international intellectual thought for centuries. The area’s rich artistic, historical and culinary offerings are in easy reach of EUI members and draw visitors from all over the world. The EUI campus itself is spread over several historical buildings, most notably the Badia Fiesolana, the Villa Schifanoia, Villa Salviati, and the Convento di San Domenico. With its beautiful gardens and views over Tuscan landscapes, the EUI offers its members the opportunity to conduct their work in a setting of unparalleled beauty.
EXCELLENT CAREER PROSPECTS EUI graduates enjoy excellent career prospects in Europe and beyond. Thanks to the EUI’s unique international intellectual environment and its world-class doctoral and post-doctoral training, our alumni successfully obtain positions both within and outside of academia. While around 70 per cent of our alumni go on to careers in universities or research, another 15 per cent play a role in the international arena by taking up positions in European Institutions and international organisations. Still others obtain posts in national governments and the private sector. Within a year of completing their PhD the majority of EUI doctoral students are in full- or part-time employment. Importantly, the EUI is often an incubator for important research and career networks that flourish long after our graduates leave the campus. Our alumni find themselves as partners in large-scale international research projects, or as colleagues in international institutions such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.
LIFELONG CAREER NETWORKS
STUDENT LIFE AND SERVICES EUI members come from a variety of backgrounds, and the Institute offers a range of services to help them settle into working and community life. These include, among others, the Academic Service, the ICT Service, and the Language Centre. The Institute also provides housing facilities, crèche facilities and some medical and counselling services. The EUI has a disability policy and is dedicated to making the EUI accessible to all. The EUI enjoys a lively social scene with regular events, often with national themes, held at Bar Fiasco in the Badia Fiesolana. There are a range of sports and cultural clubs including basketball, football, rowing, running, yoga, dancing, singing and theatre—all researcher-organised initiatives supported by the Academic Service.
