Dear Readers It’s the time of year to be out and about and there are certainly no excuses in our area with so much on offer during the summer months. So enjoy! And on that subject, could I ask you to spare an hour now and then to help others to get out - East Horsley Care are seeking volunteer drivers now urgently to help those less fortunate when they need a visit to the Medical Centre or similar and all the details are on Page 29. Lovely places to visit for a day out include the Bookham Garden Event being held on 22 June (details on Page 53) and Effingham Village Day on 28 June, at which event you’ll have a chance to hear Lettice Rowbotham (her of recent BGT fame) play the violin, an Elvis impersonator and a Bake Off no less! Of note also are Horsley Community Fund having recently had donations of £73,000 and James Harper of Wills & Smerdon needs your support and sponsorship for his endeavour to cycle the Prudential Cycle London Surrey event in August in aid of the Fund, all details are on Page 13. As usual we are here in the office if you would like to send in something you think the community needs to know about, we’d love to hear from you. Take care until the next time. The Horsleys Community Fund
Many thanks to all our donors Your contributions have made a real difference to residents and community groups in the Horsleys. We have had donations of £73k to date, and we have already made grants equivalent to 15% of this amount - this is fantastic. However as the funds are held as an endowment and due to matched funding, gift aid and investment returns, our investments currently stand at £115k and are generating £4-5k per year for further grants. Please do contact Clare Mathias on 01483 281755 for further details. Please remember that James Harper from Wills and Smerdon Estate Agents is cycling the Prudential London Surrey 100 miles in August: Please do support him in this feat! https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/jamesharper1

More and more charity shops are opening up in premises that would otherwise stand empty. But what actually hides behind their facades, and how do they help the community? The Woking Hospice Shop in Station Parade raises money for the local hospice, and Mary Richardson has been the manager since it opened 3 years ago. “I often get customers asking me about our services, and once I explain what we do, they’re often pleasantly surprised and very keen to support us,” explains Mary. The annual running costs for the Hospice is £4.6 million, yet all care is provided for free. It has 10 beds on its ward, but for every one patient in the Hospice, we are looking after 30 in their own home. The Hospice-atHome service includes a 24hour advice line for carers and relatives, and patients are also invited to attend sessions at the Hospice Day Care throughout the week. Relatives are offered support though the counselling team, and youngsters can attend either the Footsteps group, for children under 12, or the Tommy D group for teenagers. A new Helping Understanding Bereavement programme (HUB) introduced last year takes bereavement support into Surrey schools, and is aimed at students who are struggling at coming to terms with losing a loved one.
Support Your Charity Shop - Support Your Hospice
“Some of our shop volunteers h a v e h a d re l a t i v e s i n t h e Hospice, and sometimes customers want to share their personal experience with us, and I always hear so many wonderful stories about our care,” explains Mary. She is
proud to work for the local charity, and also regularly supports their fundraising events such as the upcoming ladies only Midnight Walk in June. The shop contributes to the Hospice’s running costs by accepting donations, which are then either sold or recycled. Volunteers are key to the running of the shop, and more are always needed, so if you would like to help and show your support please contact Shop Manager Mary Richardson.

Henshaws are delighted to announce that Roger Grunsell, who was formally the Senior Partner at Swan Lettings, has joined Henshaws as their Lettings Development Manger. Roger brings nearly 18 years of lettings experience to Henshaws and joins Manager Debbie Richardson with the aim to expand their already established lettings department. Since leaving Swan 4 years ago, Roger has been training letting agents throughout London & South East and said “Our approach to lettings is to offer a personal yet thoroughly professional service rather than adopt a corporate approach”. The company ethos is one of first-rate service to both landlords and tenants with the business being built on excellent service and customer care. We believe in providing the best level of care a property could have and finding a tenant who will look after it and make it their home. Henshaws have offices in East Horsley and Bookham, with the lettings department being based in Bookham. Roger added “From both these offices we can serve the surrounding areas including East & West Horsley, Effingham, Clandon, Leatherhead, Fetcham & Ashtead. Prospective landlords can be assured that all our properties are advertised in the widest market available with prominent exposure on all the major portals including Rightmove, Zoopla & Primelocation” Henshaws are proud members or ARLA - the Association of Residential Lettings Agents, which means our clients’ accounts are fully bonded. If you have a property to let and would like to speak to Roger or any one of the Henshaws letting team, without obligation, then feel free to drop into our office for an informal chat or call us on 01372 750282 to arrange an appointment or Email: lettings@henshaws.net

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood
If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.
want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.
Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.
Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.
Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you
Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners
are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Please will you volunteer to drive for East Horsley Care? We are a local voluntary body that provides transport for East Horsley residents who require medical services. Over the years, many Horsley residents have helped to make the service a success, but we are in need of fresh blood to keep it going!
Who is it for?
Our service is used by people who are unable to drive themselves. We encourage clients to ask their relatives and friends for help, but, failing that, to contact our transport service for assistance. Most requests for drives are to local Medical Centres or to one of the local hospitals or clinics in Guildford. As well as Medical Centre appointments, we provide transport for dental and other health services in the area.
How it works
We do not ask our Volunteer drivers to give any commitment. When approached by a one of our coordinators to undertake a drive, you have the option of accepting or refusing. It does not involve a big commitment of time. Typically, you will be asked to do one drive in the course of two or three weeks, although some of our volunteers choose to do more at busy times. Drivers are not expected to be out of pocket. Clients using the service pay the driver a fixed charge according to an advertised tariff which reimburses the driver for fuel costs, and reflects the distance travelled.
Can you help, please?
It is very rewarding and is enormously appreciated by our clients. To be realistic, many of us may have occasion to take advantage of the service in the future, so please help us whilst you are able to do so.
Please contact our main coordinator Alastair Rutherford-Warren on 01483 283720 or email AlastairRWarren@btinternet.com

Summertime Blues
5.
Some years we barely see the sun at all, unless looking at old holiday photos counts. Then suddenly we’re all aquiver with the latest weather forecasts, and before you know it the shops are stocking sunscreen and fishing hats again.
6. 7. 8. 9.
But let’s not forget the downside to summer. 1. Mowers and strimmers - it’s bad enough when it’s your own and you have to cut the grass, but the sporadic, deafening noise pollution all around is enough to send anyone scurrying indoors. 2. There’s no excuse now not to do all those outdoor painting jobs you’ve been putting off since last year. 3. Wearing shorts again – I’m not sure the 30

world-at-large will ever be ready for the sight of my milk-bottle white pins. Stripey, buzzy houseguests who don’t know when - or how - to leave, even when you give them directions and point with a newspaper. A steering wheel and dashboard you could fry an egg on, or your fingertips. Barbecues - a cross between a fire safety film and a digestion test. Lobsters on the beach - the human kind. More flesh on display, from both sexes, than a butcher’s shop window - and not always so tastefully arranged. Traffic - there’s always some idiot on the road with a caravan, in front of me with my caravan. Bitey things - and always when you least expect them. Roadworks - it wouldn’t be summer without endless lines of sunbathing roadcones. Just when we’ve got used to the idea of summer being back, it gets rained off. © Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will
0
Do you know why?
0
If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness like dementia you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you such as family or friends. However if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it ! In 2007 the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA then family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows:
• A security bond would also be needed and based on an estate valued at £ 250,000 these can typically cost on average £ 500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection
• There is an application fee of £400.00* payable
It is far more sensible whilst you have mental capacity to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection that would apply without one.
• There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £ 320.00* dependent on the level of supervision necessary.
Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would endure should one be required but not be in place.

Beauty Beach Ready Beauty
By Helen Taylor methodically, covering every inch of your skin evenly. Don’t forget you are likely to need help to do your back.
Heavenly Hair If your hair is a bit dry, or has splitends, a couple of weeks in the sun and in sea-water or chlorinated pools will make the matter far worse. Book a trim before you head off.
You’ve been toning up and getting into shape for months, ready to flaunt your bikini body on the beach. So, now your holiday is just around the corner, it’s time plan your holiday beauty routine. Fake it First Winter pale skin does not look great in a bikini, so you’ll need to fake the golden glow. Head to the beauty salon (for best results) or to the shops (if on a budget) and prepare your skin. Thorough exfoliation is key and it’s best done the night before. Concentrate on those areas prone to dryness like knees, ankles and elbows. Allow at least 24 hours between waxing and tanning. If you tan too soon after waxing your pores and hair follicles will still be open and you may find that the product builds up leaving you with dark dots. Be really generous with your moisturiser and put plenty on your knees, elbows and feet. If you are going for the DIY option, don a pair of latex gloves, squeeze a dollop of fake tan on to your hand and then work quickly and 46
At the poolside, slather a leavein conditioner onto your hair. This will help to protect against sun damage and will leave your locks looking thoroughly shiny, as the heat makes the product even more effective. Always rinse your tresses with fresh water after swimming in the sea or pool. Both salt and chlorine will really dry your hair out. If your hair is long enough keep it pinned up during the day and preferably covered up too. Not only will this protect your hair, put it will also protect your head which can easily burn along a parting line. Sumptuous Skin The three important steps which you should follow at home are cleanse, tone and moisturise, and it’s even more important on holiday. Regularly apply and re-apply sunscreen. Ensuring that your entire body is protected against damaging UV rays is a must. Use a high factor,
YOUR TOWN, YOUR RESOURCE
and remember to re-apply after swimming. And use a nourishing balm for your lips too. Wear a large hat on the beach. Not only will you look chic, you’ll also be protecting the delicate skin on your face too. Always apply after-sun lotion. A long day on the beach calls for plenty of after-sun when you get back to the hotel. Minimal Make-Up Keep make-up light in the day by swapping a fullcoverage foundation with a tinted moisturiser. Cover imperfections with a little concealer. Wear one coat of quality waterproof mascara on your top lashes for definition. Better still, arrange a trip to your beauty salon for an eyelash and eyebrow tint before you jet off. A peachy coloured blush will look fabulous with bronzed skin and is much better than pink hues which only serve to add more redness to already flushed cheeks. Unhealthy hangover Drink plenty of water each day, more if you’re out in the hot sun for long periods of time. Of course you are on holiday so if you do indulge in cocktails and beers, try to alternate each alcoholic drink with water.

Sébastien Loeb Interview Loeb does Pikes Peak - http://youtu.be/Y20CLumT2Sg
He’s the most successful driver in the World Rally Championship’s history, with an incredible nine titles to his name. He holds the record for fastest ascent of the buttock-clenching Pikes Peak hill climb – and if you haven’t seen the video, go do it now. But most of all he’s an all-round nice guy and a massive car nut. Sébastien Loeb is a legend among rally car fans and a hero to petrol heads. After years of dominating the world’s rally stages with Citroen, the 40-yearold is now starting at the bottom rung of the ladder once more and taking on a new challenge – competing in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with Citroen. Here, in an exclusive interview, Loeb talks crashing his first car, gives his tips for driving on the limit, tries to sell us his Lamborghini Aventador and says he simply doesn’t care how he does in WTCC as long as it’s not finishing last. My first car was a Renault 5 GT Turbo. My friends all drove BMWs, Golf GTIs and Peugeot 205 GTIs at the time I was growing up. We all loved cars. I picked the Renault because I wanted a fast small car. My grandmother helped me buy it second-hand.
It didn’t last too long – I crashed it. I’d had the GT Turbo for about a year before I drove it into a pole. I drove it too hard. I bought another one with a broken engine – there were lots of those around – and I swapped it over. I eventually part exchanged it for a Fiesta RS Turbo. This was no good in comparison as it had too much power going through the front wheels. It under-steered all over the place. I soon got rid of that and moved on to a Peugeot 205 Rallye, after that two 205 GTIs, then I swapped into a Saxo VTS. I have to say the Saxo was my favourite. I used it to recce rallies in it before I competed in them. I modified it with a short gearbox, big brakes, better suspension, a roll cage and sports seats. It was a road car, but very quick and great fun to drive. These days I don’t really have much of a car collection. I have my Citroen C4 WRC car that was given to me as a present. I will keep that forever – it’s very special. I like to change my other cars regularly though. I have a Citroen DS5, a Lamborghini Aventador and a Porsche 911 Turbo. I’m changing the latter for a Cayenne and am selling the Aventador – do you want to buy it? I used to drive everywhere on the limit. I realised I had a talent behind the wheel in my Renault 5 when I was quicker than all my friends. I’ve always liked to drive through corners fast and picked up the skill of sliding when my dad would take me to a field
in his old saloon and he’d let me handbrake turn it. I always enjoyed those times. My best piece of advice to upcoming rally drivers is try and get noticed. I started off in a competition in France that had 15,000 entrants. I won the regionals and then everyone was pitched against each other in a national final. I won, but the judge chose the second placed guy over me. So I tried again the following year and won it again. I then had a call from the guy who is now my team manager who spotted my perseverance. So my advice is: Keep trying. In rally you need good notes. You need to be able to anticipate what’s coming up next and you can only do that with good pace notes. You have to focus on what you’re doing at that moment, maybe that’s adjusting brake pressure, but also think about what’s around the next bend. Winning the World Rally Championship in front of my friends and family was a career highlight. Of course my first World Championship was very special – it finally felt like I’d achieved something – but when I won the final stage, in my home town, in front of my friends and family, well, that was something else. It was a very proud moment. I don’t want to be in the queue this year. World Touring Cars are very different and I’m starting from zero again and learning how to improve. Racing is different to rallying: You’ve got other cars on the track at the same time for a start and you need to be perfect everywhere, with every braking point and every corner. These are all new things to be, but I will get the rhythm. I want a good position, but I prefer finishing first…

The Better Life The Joy of Camping by Derek Thompson We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Eco-friendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is.
than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farmmade yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies. Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly.
First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs. After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one. What could be more relaxing 52
The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a waterretaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come. all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice! The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives. The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out. These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home. Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?

Time They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them is going to be praying that isn’t the case. Whether you’re spending the summer behind a desk or in a deckchair, these timely titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass you by, almost in an instant. The Time Traveler’s Wife Audrey Niffenegger Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twentythree and he was thirty-one. Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, his ‘clock’ continually resetting, meaning Claire has no idea where or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life; raising their child and holding onto the fact that they found each other at all. It’s a fantastic and heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again. A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end. This is a remarkable story linking three women across time and continents.
The Time Machine - H.G. Wells Long before Doctor Who started fighting Daleks and regenerating, H.G. Wells gave the world his view of the future, through the eyes of a Victorian scientist. The Time Traveller (we never learn his real name) invents a time machine that sends him to the year 802,701AD and discovers a peaceful people called the Eloi. But these descendants of man live lives of unspoken terror. When he scratches beneath the surface of this apparent utopia, our time traveller discovers another race: Morlocks. These terrifying tunnel-dwellers are not to be messed with and the time traveller must escape posthaste…if only he can relocate his missing time machine. A Time to Kill - John Grisham A ten year old black girl is viciously attacked and assaulted by two drunken white men one night. The town of Clanton, Mississippi is thrown into total chaos by the act of violence and the girl’s father, Carl Lee Hailey, asks a white attorney Jake Brigance for legal advice, wanting to know if he could be acquitted if he kills the two men. Brigance implores Hailey not to do anything stupid, but adds that if it were his daughter…Hailey avenges Tonya’s attack and kills both men leaving Brigance fighting to save both his client and his own skin. This is a legal thriller at its best, firmly cementing Grisham as the king of the courtroom drama. Hard Times - Charles Dickens Domineering headmaster Thomas Gradgrind is the
personification of the Industrial Revolution. He is a man of facts and the hard truth and he banishes free-thinking, creativity and freedom of expression from his home and from his classroom. His views and utilitarian regime dominate Coketown and it is little wonder that his son rebels and falls into a life of crime, whilst his obedient daughter marries a man she doesn’t love. Enter the spritely and carefree circus performer Sissy Jupe to spice this drab world up a bit, along with the weaver, Stephen Blackpool. It may be there could be a chink of light in this otherwise drab, industrial prison of a town. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon Chris doesn’t make for the most likely of detectives in this ‘whodunit’. He’s fifteen years old and he has Asperger’s Syndrome. He likes facts and order, routine and mathematics. He finds social interaction and other human beings an absolute minefield to negotiate. When Chris finds his neighbour’s dog has been murdered he must rise to the challenges that life has thrown to him and take himself out of his comfort zone. The story has been published in a version for adults and another for children and isn’t, says Haddon, a book about Asperger’s. It’s a story about what it’s like to be on the outside looking in; how different and isolated we can all feel and how varied the human mind is in interpreting what’s going on around us.

Glazed Chicken Kebabs
with Sweet Potato Mash
Serves 4
Ready in 25 minutes
These quick chicken kebabs with a tangy chilli glaze are perfect for a mid-week supper. Sweet potatoes cook just as quickly as ordinary potatoes, just make sure they are cut into even-sized chunks and take care not to overcook them. Thread the chicken cubes and onion wedges onto four wooden skewers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and brush all over with sunflower oil. Cook under a medium preheated grill for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is just cooked through.
Ingredients: • 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into cubes • 2 small red onions, peeled and cut into thin wedges
Meanwhile, boil the sweet potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted boiling water for 10-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain well, then mash with the butter and crème fraiche until smooth. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
• 2 tsp sunflower oil • 1 kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
Place the chilli sauce, honey and vinegar in a small pan and simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy. Brush half the glaze all over the chicken kebabs and grill for a further 1-2 minutes.
• 25g butter • 2 tbsp crème fraiche • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • 1 tbsp runny honey
Serve the kebabs on the sweet potato mash with the rest of the hot glaze drizzled over. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander.
• 2 tsp red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
TIP
For an extra fiery flavour add some finely chopped fresh red chilli pepper to the glaze.

Junior Golf at Effingham Golf Club Effingham Golf Club boasts a thriving Junior Section (up to 18 years) of boys and girls providing a progressive programme from new starter to accomplished player. The Club has hosted the British Open Qualifying rounds and in May 2014 was the chosen venue for the Southern Qualifier for the Brabazon Trophy, which is the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship. The course boasts fantastic views and is considered one of the best downland courses in England. Being on chalk the course remained open throughout the recent extreme wet weather. The beautiful club house is open to Junior members where a variety of food for the hungry young golfer is available. Effingham Golf Club is one of few local clubs accredited with the prestigious England Golf Mark Award which is a national scheme that identifies and recognizes junior and beginner friendly golf facilities. The three key areas within the golf club which are assessed are: • Coaching & Playing
Group coaching for novices.
• Club Environment (including sports equity & ethics) • Child Protection & Duty of Care ( a copy of the EGC Safeguarding Policy is available by request)
Junior Membership invitation to local young golfers
The club is keen to extend the opportunity of Junior membership to existing young golfers in the local area. Much of the coaching is subsidised by the Club so as to make it affordable to all. As well as regular monthly competitions, there are inter- club matches. There is no joining fee for a new Junior Member but there is a modest annual subscription of £100 (under13 yrs) £205 (13-18 yrs).
Luke Hearne being presented with Junior Club Champion Trophy by Fred Gray – Club Captain.
It is understood that some young and aspiring golfers may either not have an official handicap or may not be quite up to the standard needed for immediate Junior Membership with the playing rights its provides. However, this is not a problem as these can be addressed by the Junior Organisers in a number of practical ways that meet the individual’s situation.
Junior Golf for Novices and New starters
If you are either a complete novice or interested in just giving golf a go, the club is keen to help you with its junior golf development scheme. Many winners of the Junior trophies at the Club came through this process with some having started as young as 8 years old and then working up to Junior Membership. All the above is part of Effingham’s Junior Golf programme which is organised by our PGA Professional, Junior Committee and a host of adult male and female volunteer members of the Club. The Junior Section is represented by the Junior Captain (Bill Bathurst), Jennifer Vincent (Vice Captain), Danny Illes and Luke Hearne who are also available to mentor new junior members.
You can find out more about joining Junior Golf by contacting our PGA Professional: Lee Boxall, email: lee@effinghamgolfclub.com or telephone 01372 452203 (golf inquiries – pro shop) To Advertise in the Horsley Directory call 01483 600 912
