Utopia is too fancy, we go for Protopia. “ Protopia Party, this thesis aims to reconstruct an imperfect cultural oasis within Malaysia’s Chinatown with adaptive reuse in cooperate with placemaking. ” After the changing social and political landscape of the past few decades, the role of Chinatown in the local community has gradually disappeared from an indispensable pillar of social support to an almost obsolete state today. The government’s attitude towards the Chinatown has consequently evolved from being uptight and defensive, to being supportive. Grants have since been provided to these leftover Chinese community in attempt to preserve this diminutive remnant of cultural capital. However, following the past phases of gentrification, what is left behind now are fragments of the past, isolated and helpless, struggling for survival. The application of adaptive reuse and conservation of heritage buildings is crucial in Chinatown, from tangible cultural assets, such as our buildings, monuments, handicrafts, traditional costumes or ancient tools, to our intangible cultural assets, such as performing art forms, recipes, manual methods or rituals, we can build emotional connections and help to steer the future of our city. Future city is builds by future generation, without understanding laws and social structures that create order and building an ideal society, future generations will not be able to connect to the city emotionally. As a society, this understanding not only helps in shaping process of becoming an ideal society, but also improves critical and analytical thinking. Therefore, before all these, conserve and prevent the heritage buildings from vanishing is crucial, so that buildings will exist in the memory of future generations. Hence, the proposal is a passionate attempt to prevent these cultural communities from becoming remnants, thus resisting the demise of local traditions and culture. Considering the evolving attitude, increasing budget and with adaptive reuse process for Chinese arts and culture in Chinatown, this cultural preservation proposal does not seem to be unimaginable after all.
