CHILDHOOD STORY

guitarella playground

The concept for this project is ‘Disassemble - Reassemble’, based on the childhood story of a toy umbrella that is taken apart. Its individual components are then fixed together with other elements to form a reassembled ‘Guitarella’, a cross between a toy guitar and umbrella.

Finally, the elements of the machine are embedded into the architectural design of a playground that befits the childlike imagination of a musical wonderland which unfolds like an open umbrella.

kaleidospod textile design institute + research center

This project focuses on the philosophy of ornamentation, which is derived from the traditional textile craft of Thailand - its proposed site. The ornamental patterns were designed to portray the contrasting rigid and fluid movements between the process and product of the craft.

SITE SYNTHESIS

From the pattern, a unique ornamental ‘Kaleidospod’ is crafted to become the pattern-making machine alongside the ornamental facade - ‘Kaleidosfold’. All of these merge together to form the Textile design institute and research center that will provide for the students across the shore of the Bang Krachao river as well as visiting tourists and residing locals.

Bang Krachao SEMESTER July 2020

CONTRASTING

The journey to determine the language of ornamentation started by observing the process of traditional Thai textile making, deriving the qualities of its movement and form.

With the use of relevant shapes and lines, the final ornament drawing manages to bridge the contrast between a process that focuses on tension and rigidity, with its end product which can be described as free-flowing, flexible, dynamic and ever-changing.

ORNAMENT BUILDING ELEMENT

As a corresponding analogue to the predetermined language of ornamentation, the building element is designed to portray the connection between two realms, hence the merging of two spheres to form a cylindrical pod.

The ‘Kaleidospod’, is therefore a skylighted window pod with kaleidoscopic functions purposed for the extraction of textile design patterns through the play of light and reflection. Steered by a weave-like mechanism, its mobile panels are designed to adapt to the ventilation and lighting needs of the building it is contained within.

CASE STUDY: PALLAZO ITALIA

Design concept

The overall concept of the architectural design of the Italian Pavilion is that of an urban forest in which the building, through its skin and its volumetric arrangement, takes on the features of an architectural landscape

The branching pattern of the external cladding of Palazzo Italia coherently interprets the theme of the tree of life, inserting it in the form of a petrified forest.

Materiality

The new ornament facade assembly was deliberated to be a reflection of the grammar of ornament, which focuses on the difference between the process and product of textile creation. This distinction is profound in the fact that the process was one founded on creating tension, rigidity and tightness through pulling and pushing movements, while In stark contrast, the product is evident in portraying fluidity, softness and bendability.

By bridging the contrast between rigidity and fluidity, the new ornament facade assembly portrays a movement that blows up a collision between 2 forms.

ORNAMENTAL FACADE ASSEMBLY

translating rigidity and fluidity into three-dimensional forms deriving the shapes and lines from its surrounding edges

The entire outdoor surface and part of the interiors will consist of i.active Biodynamic cement panels, Some 80 percent of this air-purifying cement is made from recycled materials, such as scraps from Carrara marble.

initial form + window panels and framing

Aside from portraying the stark contrast between the concepts of rigidity and fluidity in 2 forms, the facade is intended to demonstrate a function likened to a measuring and observing instrument of the different degrees of reflection, in a means to aid the workability of the kaleidospod (ornament building element). This is achieved by having 5 main angles of folds in its surfaces, as well as to compare the effect of concavity and convexity on the reflection of light and colour. When the mechanism of the kaleidospod is worked, the user is able to gauge the angle and degree of reflection that is used to produce the pattern, and hence provide accurate results for its research.

atmospheric smog particles Compatibility to form Firstly, the design was imprinted onto a building surface and structure that had a curvilinear and organic form, which is also the scheme for the design project. Sustainability and nature Similar to the current project, the pavilion is located closely to a lake (natural water body). It also posseses characteristics that help to improve its surrounding element such as the photocatalytic quality of its biodynamic material.

This project is characterized by the concept of cross-culturing and hybrid architecture. The site that was given is located in Kampung Pasir Panjang, Sitiawan. To study the different strengths and issues of the site, strategies such as synergies, dissections and collocations were used to derive the program for the proposed project.

The final program is a crossover of the town’s traditional trade and religious leadership delivered through tertiary education to its youth. Through modelmaking and sketching techniques, the project finds its final form in a unique composition of hybrid structures constructed in timber, steel and concrete.

The struggle of keeping communities together through faith and religion without youth involvement.

When the results of the dissection exercise are recomposed together to form a self-sustaining system, each element works together in unison to shoulder their respective issues and challenges. Such a collaboration then results in the potential solution that may impact the chosen site positively especially in the empowerment of its target group - local youths.

beirut institute of security (bios)

The Beirut Institute of Security (BiOS) is the central administrative and regulatory headquarters from which all the security services are dispensed. Its key objectives are to erase the negative misconception and labelling tied to the great explosion, as well as to kickstart a major rebranding and reconstruction of the security architecture of Beirut.

The architectural design is highlighted by the prominent Wall of Beirut, which functions to display NFT artworks as a form of commemoration, house the aquaponics line and automated safety systems to each redefine ‘security’ into Shelter, Survival, Surveillance, Shield and Sanctuary..

The explosion caused destruction to many of the city’s historic buildings and homes. Muslims and Christians were separated geographically by residence, and the nation faced major financial crisis whereby cash, food, medicine and basic necessities were in great shortage. In the midst of such calamity, the traditional port system and mechanism is insufficient to provide solutions to the urban population. Elemental Aspects: The Awakening POSTCATASTROPHIC SITUATION Elemental Aspects: Automated port safety surveillance Cryptocurrency mining district Element of mobility Reconstruction of the old port Integration of bartering and housing To inject new program into the port’s ecosystem, the old is reconstructed to incorporate the contemporary. Firstly, digitization and technology are integrated via an automated port safety surveillance system and cryptocurrency mining and research institutes to replace human administration and cash. The integration of bartering systems and housing in the form of co-living shelters bridges the gap of interracial conflict and food supply shortage by enabling citizens to manufacture a diverse set of produce for local consumption and international exchange. Memorials are erected with the silos as a pavilion to display sculpture and art pieces constructed from the explosion remains. All of these are connected through a cable system of mobility. The Reconstruction NEW PROGRAM INJECTION Port city Integration Connection between realms The grand gateway Multi-directional traffic Portal through time Elemental Aspects: Coexisting Realms FUTURE VISON Finally, the future vision for the port culminates into a coexistence and cohabitance of the utopian and dystopian realms in symbiotic balance. There is a strong connection and relationship between the exterior facing port and the inner city, as well as Beirut as city and the outside world. The port does not lose its connection to its roots of heritage and the tragic explosion that happened in the past, but continues to move forward with the technology of the future. It is a reimagined portal that traverses through time, history, currency and methodology.

The Urban Nomad is a non-native person who travels to and resides in a place due to its proximity to resources and opportunities. In the urban context, this is translated into jobs, education, religious intentions and artistic belonging for the Urban Worker, the Urban Scholar, the Urban Artisan and the Urban Worshipper. From analyzing the origins of the nomad and its architecture, one can observe the true nomadic nature of the communal beings who move independently in exploration, build shelters towards necessity, nature and flexibility, in a life that is perpetually circulating around ‘motion’. Uniting these nomadic characteristics with the urban context of the site, The Nomadic Enclave is designed to embody the Urban Nomads with an architectural vision of ‘shifting motions’.
