Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles. They first appeared during the Triassic period, around 243 million years ago. When dinosaurs appeared, they were not the dominant terrestrial animals.

Dinosaurs first appeared 243 million years ago. Some were plant eaters and others meat eaters. Evidence suggests that all dinosaurs were egglaying; and that nest-building was a trait shared by many dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs lived many millions of years before the first humans. Dinosaurs are represented on every continent by both extant species (birds) and fossil remains.

The Brachiosaurus is estimated to have been between 18 and 21 meters long; weight estimates range from 28,000 kg to 58,000kg. It had a long neck, small skull, and large overall size, all of which are typical for sauropods.

Mounted fossil dinosaur skeletons have been major attractions at museums around the world, and dinosaurs have become an enduring part of world culture.

The first dinosaur fossils were recognized in the early 19th century.

The Parasaurolophus dinosaur lived in what is now North America and possibly Asia during the Late Cretaceous Period, about 76.5–73 million years ago. It was an herbivore that walked both on two or four legs.

To discover how organisms lived in the past, paleontologists look for clues preserved in ancient rocks—the fossilized bones, teeth, eggs, footprints, teeth marks, leaves, and even dung of ancient organisms.

All dinosaurs laid eggs. About 40 kinds of dinosaur eggs have been discovered.

Triceratopsdinosaur first appeared about 68 million years ago. Bearing a large bony frill and three horns on the skull, it has many similarities to the modern rhinoceros.

There are roughly 1000 known species of extinct dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs often swallowed large rocks. These rocks stayed in the stomach and helped them grind up food.

Modern birds are a kind of dinosaur because they share a common ancestor with flying dinosaurs.

The Ankylosaurus is estimated to have been between 6 and 8 meters long and to have weighed between 5,000kg and 8,000kg. It walked on all four feet, and had a broad, robust body with a wide, low skull.

The Liopleurodon was a marine reptile belonging to the Pliosauroidea, a clade of short-necked plesiosaurs. The Liopleurodon is estimated to have grown up to 6.4 metres in length.

The Spinosaurus was among the largest of all known carnivorous dinosaurs, nearly as large as or even larger than other theropods such as the Tyrannosaurus. Estimates suggest that it was between 12.6 to 18 meters in length .

T-Rex lived throughout what is now western North America, on what was then an island continent known as Laramidia. It was a viscious and dangerous predator .

Some of the biggest plant eaters had to eat as much as a ton of food a day. This is similar to eating a bus-sized pile of vegetation every day.

Dinosaurs dominated Earth for over 165 million years. Humans have been around for only 2 million years.

It is believed that Dinosaurs were wiped out 66 million years ago, when an asteroid struck Earth.

The Cretaceous–Tertiary (K–T) extinction, was a sudden mass extinction of three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth approximately 66 million years ago.

The Chicxulub crater is buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Its center is located offshore near the town of Chicxulub, after which the crater is named. It was formed when a large asteroid or comet about 11 to 81 kilometers in diameter, struck the Earth. The date of the impact coincides precisely with the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, slightly more than 66 million years ago, and a widely accepted theory is that worldwide climate disruption from the event was the cause of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, a mass extinction in which 75% of plant and animal species on Earth became extinct, including all non-flying dinosaurs. The crater is estimated to be 150 kilometers in diameter.
