Why an arts colony

An Introduction

“The artist’s world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep.”

Paul Strand A destination of choice for art lovers artists and arts loverssince sincethe the 1800’s, Eureka Springs’ destiny was formulated when Louis and Elsie Freund began the local preservation movement and established the village as an art community in the 1930’s. Their home became known as “The Algonquin Roundtable of the Ozarks” with such guests as Thomas Hart Benton, folklorist Vance Randolph, Pulitzer Prizewinning poet John Gould Fletcher, and many locals.

The Freunds were inspiring and believed in creative collaboration – a legacy that thrives today in Eureka Springs. It is a fitting tribute to Louis and Elsie Freund that their work is represented in the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Musee des Art Décoratifs in Paris, the Victorian and Albert Museum in London, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Their legacy continues as American Style magazine consistently names Eureka Springs one of its highly celebrated “Top 25 Arts Destinations” in the United States. Additionally, the entire Victorianera downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A main thoroughfare,

Spring Street was named one of America’s 10 Best Streets for 2010 by the American Planning Association. In 2014, Eureka Springs was named as having one of America’s Best Main Streets by Yahoo Travel. So, come discover why Eureka Springs is an arts colony for yourself. Be prepared to immerse your senses in visual, literary, performing, and culinary arts because in Eureka Springs art engages sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Take an exciting venture by getting outside yourself and exploring another’s view as seen through the senses of the artists of Eureka Springs.

“The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work.”

Emile Zola

Opera in the Ozarks, a training ground for future opera performers, has brought thrilling performances to the area for over 60 years. Enthusiasts enjoy three yearly productions of different opera selections on a rotating schedule. Performing Arts The Eureka Springs Indie Film Fest offers three solid days and nights of films and workshops in April. The Fest wraps-up with The Indie Award Show and After-Party where one-of-a-kind Indie Awards are created yearly by local artists. Eureka Springs calls out to lovers of all musical tastes from the “oldies but goodies” to the funky and fresh. It is almost impossible to find a time when there isn't a themed festival happening. May Festival of the Arts, Blues Weekend, Bluegrass Weekend, the annual Banjo Rally International, Jazz Eureka and the 60+ year-strong Original Ozarks Folk Festival bring local, regional, national, and international virtuosos to stages throughout town. Eureka Springs is also home to one of the true American performing art forms; music and comedy theater. Combining gospel, old and new country, comedy, patriotic songs, early rock and roll and bluegrass these unabashedly All-American theaters have dominated the Ozark entertainment scene since the early ‘70’s. They have a strong following among the faithful, and new fans “discover” this wholesome genre nightly. Eureka Springs is happy to host two of the longest running theaters in Arkansas, if not the entire country. Eureka Springs City Auditorium (circa 1929) is often the center of festival activity. The Aud has a rich history. If the walls could talk, they would boast of the countless impressive performances that have graced The Aud's hallowed concert hall from the first headliner, band leader John Phillip Sousa, to shining stars such as Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, Bela Fleck, Ani DiFranco, Randy Newman, Marty Stuart, Lyle Lovett, and the late, great Ray Charles.

At least twice yearly, the Ozarks Chorale fills the air with music from Bach to the Beatles. Chorale performances are held in The Aud.

Just up the street from The Aud, the historic Basin Spring Park band shell offers free entertainment and often serves as a showcase for local musicians and a marketplace for the visual arts. The Park is also a favorite spot for street performers to entertain visitors and locals alike. It plays host to frequent “drumming circles” where African drums along with others of all ilk produce captivating rhythm. Locals and visitors are invited to join the fun. If drama is your forté, join over seven million who have attended an evening outdoor performance of The Great Passion Play, portraying the last few days of Christ's life on earth with a dramatic cast of live animals – donkeys, camel, sheep and more. Relatively new to the Eureka Springs performance arts scene is a captivating evening illusionist show held in a historic chapel converted into a performance arts venue and a Music Park on North Main Street. In this park it is possible for visitors to make their own music in an interactive atmosphere. The park provides a small stage for extemporary music performances. Dance and drama groups, along with an impressive tradition of live music in pubs and restaurants, round out the hopping performing art scene in Eureka Springs. ■

Culinary art is not just the act of preparing and cooking food – it also encompasses the presentation and plating. For example, one restaurant dips into their garden and garnishes every dish with edible flowers for a colorful presentation of healthy food. Most restaurants are one-of-a-kind, family or chef owned and operated establishments. Several cater to the fresh, “farm-to-table” concept of dining, and yet others fill their guests with time-honored recipes, all from scratch, from pastries to barbeque. In the summer, the Fleur Delicious Weekend is a celebration of all the senses – sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch! The French-themed festival provides a full menu of activities including a whacky waiters' race, wine and spirit strolls, cooking “Food is our common ground,

If you keep in mind that Eureka Springs is a city of a mere 2,000 people, it’s significance as an artist community is even more impressive when you know that we are home to approximately 25% of all the art galleries in the State of Arkansas and over 50% of all the art galleries in Northwest Arkansas. Prepare for a multitude of intimate, delightful galleries where local, regional and national artists are represented. Saturday Gallery Strolls, the yearly White Street Studio Walk, a fall Eureka Springs Art Bazaar, and the annual May Festival of the Arts provide an opportunity to meet the artists who bring forth art which touches your heart and soul. The Eureka Springs Artists Registry serves as an information base for more than 400 area artists. ➤

Visual Arts Eureka Springs provides year-round opportunities to connect with visual art in studio and gallery settings. Additionally, the Eureka Springs Art Wall off North Main Street features theme-changing murals by area artists and one local building's wall offers a Louis Freund designed outdoor mural depicting the history of Eureka Springs. The Art Colony on North Main showcases several artists working in small studio settings. We have sculpture in the parks and our buildings reveal precursors to billboards, old advertising art gently fading but still visible, and the Eureka Springs Historical Museum features works of early area artist. Many local restaurants display local art with many pieces available for purchase. Enjoy an opportunity to either create or observe the changing light and scenery in the Ozarks with one of Eureka Springs' plein air painting groups. There is even a local handmade clothing establishment where apparel is designed and completed on site. A wind chime studio crafts and ships large, tuned chimes around the world. The Eureka Springs Parks Department gardener provides the changing seasons best floral presentations around the City's springs and parks, while local gardeners enjoy following this lead in their gardens.

The Eureka Springs' list of local art, crafts, private shows and associated events continues to grow and is always available on-line at EurekaSpringsChamber.com or EurekaSprings.org. For those who enjoy religious art, the Sacred Arts Center on the grounds of The Great Passion Play offers a large display of carvings, watercolor, oil, mosaics, ceramics, beautiful crosses and more in their gallery. On these grounds and atop Magnetic Mountain also stands the Christ of the Ozarks, at 67' tall it is the largest statue of Christ in the Northern Hemisphere. As you can imagine, in an area of such natural beauty and historic architecture, photography is a respected art form in Eureka Springs with many area photographers represented in local galleries. Their work provides opportunities for the visitor to take home individual photography or published books filled with beautiful scenes of Arkansas – The Natural State – and the Eureka Springs area.

16 Thorncrown Chapel

Art as architecture is available throughout the historic registry Victorian village of Eureka Springs, but nowhere is it more evident than at Thorncrown Chapel. Nestled in a wooded setting and containing over 6,000-square feet of glass, famed architect E. Eureka Springs recognizes the need to touch the lives of future and growing artists with art education. A shining example of this effort is Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA) where aspiring artists young and old obtain instruction by outstanding local and national visiting instructors. New to ESSA is its 2,700 sq. foot blacksmithing/metal fabrication studio where forging and metal fabrication combine form and function into works of art. It is estimated that over 40 local individuals offer private art, dance and music lessons in the city, a tribute to the inalienable truth that

Literary Arts “Poetry creates the myth, the prose writer draws its portrait.”

Jean-Paul Sartre Much of the literary offering of Eureka Springs centers on The Writer's Colony at Dairy Hollow. Once the first bed and breakfast in Eureka Springs, this decades-old institution has drawn 800 writers from the U.S. and over 40 countries. The Colony provides uninterrupted residency time for writers of all genres including songwriters and composers, culinary writers, architects, and playwrights. It is the only colony in the world which not only recognizes culinary writing as a legitimate writing genre, but also provides a state-of-the-art kitchen in a Culinary Suite. The Colony hosts a monthly Poet Luck & Reader's Theater bringing together visiting and local poets and writers, while providing an opportunity for creative exchange. Throughout the year, the Colony presents quarterly “Tales from the South” international public broadcasts with host and creator, Paula Morell. Concerts by resident songwriters, plays by resident screenwriters, and readings by resident authors are standard fair for the community and visitors.
