Extraordinary E

History

ureka Springs will surprise and delight you with its colorful history lessons and vivid reminders of “how things were.” This is a real Victorian Mountain Village nestled in the Ozarks that has been lovingly preserved to show you how the genuine article once appeared and still appears today. Eureka Springs has the largest collection of Victorian architecture in the central United States. The lovely Victorian homes of Eureka Springs are reminiscent of an era of pastel colors and ornate decoration now referred to as “gingerbread.” Today, they’re carefully and authentically preserved to e xacting details that include historically accurate colors of paint.

The Eureka Springs Carnegie Library is one of two m unicipal libraries in Arkansas originally f inanced by early 1900’s millionaire industrialist-philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Certain conditions were attached to his gift: the community was to provide the land and the funds for operation and maintenance; the building itself was to have a broad stairway, doors open to the general public, and close-by, a lantern (symbolizing that education elevates, enlightens, and should be available to every man, woman, and child). In 2010, Eureka celebrated the centennial of Andrew Carnegie’s gift, and, true to the founder’s request, the 100 years of generous community support. Does the building still conform to Carnegie’s stipulations? Something to check out on a walk along Spring Street!

Extraordinary History Extraordinary History

The Eureka Springs trolley recreates the principal mode of travel in early Eureka Springs. Today’s city planners chose the trolley system over bus transit as yet another means of bringing you a sample of yesteryear. The downtown Cornerstone Bank, formerly The Bank of Eureka Springs, continues the Victorian look with its potbellied stove, brass teller cages, original business machines and many more working antiques. Our historic auditorium built in 1928 has been extensively refurbished with modern amenities and now hosts top artists such as Bill Cosby, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, B.B. King, and others.

8

Before strolling the quaint Victorian streets of Eureka Springs, take a stroll through the Eureka Springs Historical Museum. Serving as a Visitors Information Center, the Museum serves both to educate and entertain visitors. Visit EurekaSpringsThenAndNow.org to learn more about the heritage of Eureka Springs.

Extraordinary E

Arts

ureka Springs is one of the most celebrated destinations in the central United States for the art and cultural heritage traveler and has been recognized by major organizations across the country. It has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” and has been selected as an America in Bloom award winner. American Style Magazine has named Eureka Springs as a “Top Twenty-Five Arts Destination.” In addition to being a Preserve America city, its entire downtown has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. A destination of choice for artists since the 1800s, Eureka Springs is currently home to over 400 working artists and more than 20 art galleries. The natural beauty of the Ozarks and peaceful environment of this eclectic mountain community make Eureka Springs a “good fit” for artists of all types. There are painters in every medium, sculptors in stone and steel, weavers of fine art, as well as classic creators of practical things to use or wear. Eureka Springs inspires and nourishes one of the finest groups of potters in the Midwest, along with creative jewelers, woodworkers, scrimshanders, decoupers, tole painters and woodcarvers.

Extraordinary Arts

The galleries of Eureka Springs are a joy to browse and shop for the creative outpourings from these artists. Have fun exploring. They are located throughout Historic Eureka Springs. One gallery displays works by over 100 local artists, ranging from handmade iron masks to delicate pottery and scented candles. Another has Raku pottery, wooden abstract sculptures, pencil drawings and oil paintings. Etchings, marble and bronze sculptures, exotic fantasy art, nationally renowned Native American art expressed in paintings and beaded creations – the list goes on and on. Be sure to visit the Art Colony on North Main Street where you will find a collection of shops housing artists working and displaying their creations. In the early 1930s, Louis and Elsie Fruend established an arts school downtown. Continuing that tradition, the Eureka Springs School of the Arts offers a wide variety of art classes to all. The New Monastery at Little Portion Hermitage is an architectural delight! After the beautiful original wooden Monastery and Charity Chapel burned to the ground on April 28, 2008, the Brothers and Sisters of Charity were given a strong encouragement to rebuild by Abbot Jerome Kodell OSB of Subiaco Abbey. He explained that most all American monasteries have suffered from fires, and eventually built their bigger abbeys afterward. The Brothers and Sisters of Charity got to work, and plans for the New Monastery began. Albert and Lisa Skiles designed a substantially green building in the pattern of European monasteries and Franciscan Missions of America. Albert Skiles’ mother was among those who helped preserve the Texas missions, so he came well prepared! The result is a stunning monastery built for a residential community of 50, and can accommodate around 150 visitors and guests in the monastic church. The Hermitage welcomes guests, and provides tours upon arrangement.

For additional information visit LittlePortion.org and JohnMichaelTalbot.com, or contact retreatinfo@littleportion.org or ministry@JohnMichaelTalbot.com. The city celebrates its rich artistic heritage every spring during the May Festival of the Arts. The entire month is dedicated to the arts, with featured events taking place each weekend. Plays, art exhibitions and concerts keep a busy schedule for patrons of both the visual and performing arts. The highly acclaimed Opera in the Ozarks at Inspiration Point will launch its 64th season in 2014. This year’s repertoire will include operas familiar to enthusiasts and novices alike. The scenic, intimate setting of the outdoor theater at Inspiration Point gives the audience the rare opportunity to be right there with the performers – close enough to see the emotion on their faces. Opera in the Ozarks is truly a special place where opportunity, music, artist and audience meld with the beauty and splendor of the Ozark Mountains to create an evening to remember. For specific performance schedules, special events and ticket information visit www.opera.org. Visitors can often listen to solo musicians in Basin Park downtown or catch a band playing in the park’s band shell. City and private promoters bring festivals such as Bluegrass, Blues, Folk and Celtic to the Auditorium. Surrounded by three lakes and two rivers, Eureka Springs is a jewel set in an artist’s paradise. Located just 40 minutes away from Bentonville, the home of corporate giant Wal-Mart and home of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Eureka Springs is the perfect place to spend a weekend, a week or a lifetime! It will not take you long to discover why this wooded mountain paradise has been so recognized.

Beaver Lake—Imagine your rod bent, that striped bass, black bass, or walleye at the end of your line. It could be that trophy fish you’ve been dreaming of. Don’t forget your camera! 28,000 acres of clear water was created by the 2,575 foot-long Beaver Dam, built across the White River. Over the years, Beaver Lake has become a popular fishing and boating destination. Scuba divers have prized the clean, clear water of Beaver Lake. The huge, wideopen surface is also a favorite playground for water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, houseboating and party barge cruising. Close your eyes and imagine yourself on the lake relaxing and when the mood hits you, diving off the bow of your boat into the clean clear water or skiing behind your boat, making those incredible turns and jumps. For a more leisurely pace, an excursion boat, The Belle of the Ozarks features sightseeing cruises along scenic Beaver Lake shoreline. Fall eagle watching from the Belle is very popular, as these majestic birds come to spend the Winter season in the

14

Ozarks. Canoeing can offer you an opportunity to see the wildlife along the shoreline up close and personal. Table Rock Lake—just north of Eureka Springs, is a favorite for fishing for bass, walleye and other game fish species along with all of the watersports. White River –If you’re an angler who likes to fly fish, wade or fish from a canoe, the White River tailwaters below Beaver Dam teem with rainbow and brown trout. Another popular stream is the Kings River; smallmouth bass are the quarry here. Both the White River and Kings River are favorite canoe streams. Several operators offer guide and float services. Eureka Springs also boasts the nation’s second-largest municipal park surrounding Lake Leatherwood, a spring-fed waterway situated inside 1600 acres of outdoor fun and adventure. Hiking trails, paddle boats, fishing, camping, and cabins are all available at Lake Leatherwood.

Several special outdoor events take place here throughout the year - fishing derby’s for the kids, the XTERRA Off-road Triathlon, Fat Tire Festival, The Eurekan Multi-Sport Event and several more events that appeal to each outdoor adventurer. Horseback rides, bicycle races, water skiing, wilderness hikes, motorcycle tours, sidewalk rambles, garden tours, a round of golf, a walk through a local cavern - you can’t escape the outdoor adventures - that is Eureka Springs! Surprises at every turn have drawn millions of people to visit this area time and time again.

Dining & Shopping

V

isitors descend on Eureka Springs’ unique dining & shopping areas with exuberance and abandon. The winding mountain streets, the incredible variety of shops and merchandise and the charming Victorian atmosphere make for unforgettable fun. The focal point for shopping is the picturesque downtown district. The entire town has been designated as a community of national significance on the National Register of Historic Places. The shops come in every description. Clothing, brass, glass, fine art g alleries, folk art, dolls, miniatures, woodcrafts, custom leather goods, jewelry, souvenirs — if it’s on your shopping list or not — chances are you’ll find it here. In addition to our downtown shopping, don’t miss the shopping and dining at Gaskins Switch, The Village at Pine Mountain, and all the other exciting shops and restaurants on Hwy 62 from the east side of the town to the west.

16

Often, you can even meet the people who make what you buy. From fudge makers and wedding cake bakers to woodcarvers and jewelry makers, many shop owners have kitchens, studios and workshops on-site, and they love to “show and tell.” Positioned among the shops are many convenient dining spots to enjoy lunch or a snack while you explore. Or p erhaps you will want to shop later in the day and stay for a sumptuous dinner in one of the many fine Eureka Springs restaurants. Arkansas newspaper readers have consistently voted Eureka Springs’ restaurants among the best in the state in annual polls. Restaurants in Eureka Springs are all “come as you are” hospitable and ready to make eating out a highlight of your visit to Eureka Springs. Whether your taste runs to American, European and Mediterranean or New York-style pizza to fried catfish or filet mignon, you’ll leave the table with a smile and a resolve to come back again soon.

Extraordinary

Relaxation T

ake time to get away from the everyday stresses of life. Eureka Springs has the tonic to restore your physical and mental well-being. Legend has it that Native Americans (Osage tribes) found relaxation here at the springs. It was said to have been a neutral site where warring tribes could lay down their arms and enjoy the refreshing springs in peace. Dr. Alvah Jackson of Oil Trough, Arkansas, found the springs very interesting in 1856, then spent the next 20 years promoting the spring water as a medicinal product called Dr. Jackson’s Eye Water. Judge L.B. Saunders of neighboring Berryville had a larger notion of what could be done with the spring water, and he brought national attention to the springs by advertising their medicinal and curative properties during an era seized by a mania for water cures (and later, promenades). In 1880, a residential population of 10,000 was served daily by stagecoach service. The 1882 arrival of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railway began a boom ushered in by 23,500 railroad passengers who rode “The Road To Health” to Eureka Springs the following year. Starting in 1880, Eureka Springs water was bottled under the brand name “Ozarka.”

Extraordinary Relaxation

So, mineral baths, steam treatments and massages really aren’t new to Eureka Springs. We were founded by health-seekers. Today, we have added to these earlier amenities, applied new technology, attracted talented and skilled professional health services practitioners and really expanded on the health and wellness theme. Today, America’s Victorian Mountain Village has everything for your relaxation, personal health and wellness. Eureka Springs has many spas and professional relaxation experts to serve you. Services range from steam cabinets and saunas to massage, weight rooms, exercise facilities, facials, aromatherapy, acupressure, primordial sound medication, Ayurvedic medicine and reflexology. To some, a beautiful sunrise or sunset is all it takes to relax. Our Ozark Mountains are a great setting to enjoy this natural beauty. Come to Eureka Springs and enjoy the fresh clean air filtering through the pines and hardwood forests. Listen to the calming sounds of nature: a babbling brook, the chatter of a squirrel and the splash of a trout in the White River or a smallmouth bass in the Kings River.

26

Play golf on a scenic mountain course or just load up the car and take a scenic drive along our gorgeous routes. Have you seen the Ozarks from a mountain tower? At every turn, there are many ways to refresh, recharge and rejuvenate your mind and body. As a visitor in 1890 asked, “Where is there another health resort that has so much to offer as Eureka Springs? Besides its palpable waters, it gives altitude and pure, dry, pine-laden mountain air and clear bright weather.” The wholesome atmosphere of early Eureka Springs as a place of relaxation and rejuvenation has been strengthened in the 21st century. Another excellent way to enjoy these benefits is to see this unique community up close – to explore the sites and views which prove that much of what was Eureka Springs is still Eureka Springs today. Enjoy!

Extraordinary

Activities T

ake time to see all of Eureka Springs - and bring the kids and grandkids! Eureka Springs has plenty of attractions and vacation activities that entertain the young and young-at-heart. How about a night of music and comedy to get the youngsters (and yourself) laughing hysterically? The music and comedy stage shows of Eureka Springs fit the bill. You’ll enjoy, country and bluegrass, pop and crossover tunes, gospel, patriotic, big band and rock and roll. One Eureka Springs show pioneered this type of entertainment in the Ozarks and it’s still going strong and thrilling kids who just happen to be a little bit older now. North on Highway 23, there’s a “full-sized train set” for the youngsters and oldsters at the Eureka Springs depot. Seven miles south of Eureka Springs on Hwy. 23 is an exotic wildlife refuge with lions, tigers, cougars, leopards and other animals. Can’t you just see those young eyes getting bigger right now staring at those cats? Build on some old Eureka Springs memories. Build some new memories. Eureka Springs is just the wholesome, fun, family-values type place that you have been looking for to share with your family. Why, you may even remember good times spent in Eureka Springs from your time as a youngster with your mom and dad. Have the time of your life in Eureka Springs and this time maybe try standup paddle boarding or zip lining.

E

ureka Springs is a natural location for meetings and conventions for all business, social, military, educational, fraternal and religious groups. Here you will find a refreshing alternative to traffic congestion and other difficulties often encountered in larger convention locations. Thanks to splendid scenery and many entertainment and lodging choices, few places in mid-America welcome recreational group travelers like Eureka Springs does.

Meetings & Conventions In Eureka, you are surrounded by the Ozark Mountains instead of man-made mountains of concrete and steel. Fresh air replaces the smog and haze of the big city. Shopping and dining opportunities and the many attractions of Eureka Springs generate extra interest and excitement to increase your attendance. Eureka Springs offers more than 3,000 lodging rooms. Numerous hotels and motels have meeting facilities that offer seating capacities for up to 800 people. Full meeting and convention facilities and banquet catering services are available. The convention center at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks, opened in 2002, has 18,500 square feet of meeting space, eleven meeting and banquet rooms, a reception area with a terrace overlooking the Ozarks and many more amenities for hosting meetings and groups.

he Eureka Springs historic auditorium seats over 900 in the recently renovated theatre. Bring your group to Eureka Springs. We’ve been getting things ready for your visit for well over 125 years. Eureka Springs is the site of many state and federal agency meetings that return year after year. Let the Chamber of Commerce help you with your meeting and convention questions.

Group Recreational Travel Group visitation has been the lifeblood of Eureka Springs from the start. The railroads organized excursions in the 1800s, and today, Eureka Springs ranks as one of Arkansas’ most popular group destinations. Groups of all kinds, especially senior and church groups are always warmly welcomed at our music shows where you will be entertained by award winning musicians, presenting quality contemporary family programs. Several companies provide personalized step-on-guide tours in and around the city. A tram offers an open-air narrated tour of the Historic District. Many restaurants are happy to accommodate groups large and small for a pleasurable dining experience.

Most hotels and motels offer convenient coach parking during your stay. Our trolley system is a fun and convenient way to get around town once you are here. Many motor coaches travel the short and scenic sixty minute trip from Branson to enjoy the variety of shops, dining and other attractions such as our caves, springs and unique locales including Blue Spring Heritage Center, a stop on the Trail of Tears in the mid-1800’s. Whether it is a family reunion, church retreat, veteran’s group, cor porate convention or motor coach tour, Eureka Springs has everything for your tour, meeting or convention, always provided with our signature above and beyond hospitality and breathtaking scenery. Extraordinary

Living

O

nce you have visited Eureka Springs, you may decide to make the choice of a lifetime. Eureka Springs attracts new residents from around the country. Pollution, crime, traffic and other urban hassles are far from this idyllic mountain village, and the temperate climate means parched summers and blizzard-ridden winters are only seen on the news, not outside the window. Eureka’s easygoing small-town Victorian charm is a perfect match for almost anyone wanting more from life than the frazzled nerves of an urban rat race. People from all walks of life, from fledgling entrepreneurs to growing families, seek out the security and hospitality of this jewel set amid the lush green background of the Ozarks. Retirees also enjoy Eureka as an ideal destination, since the unique community has many activities usually only available in larger metropolitan areas, including an incredible array of restaurants, shops and attractions. The artistic atmosphere is unrivaled, since literally hundreds of artists in every media make their home here. There’s even an entire month devoted to the arts every year as the “May Festival of the Arts” takes over the town with special exhibits, parades, concerts, gallery receptions and activities. In fact, rarely a weekend goes by in Eureka Springs without some kind of celebration or festival; there’s never a shortage of things to do. Topics range from antique cars to classical

46

music and even UFOs, so everyone is sure to find a festival suited to their own tastes. Add to that our impressive roster of museums covering everything from military history to buttons & dolls and you have entertainment every day of the year if you choose. Sometimes, though, the quiet of the countryside is too irresistible. Great fishing, boating and other water sports are available on Beaver and Table Rock Lakes; both lakes are less than 20 minutes from the downtown historic district. The White River, which flows below the Beaver Dam, is a choice spot for fly fishermen and canoe fans. East of town is the Kings River, known nationally for its scenic beauty. Many people move to Eureka Springs because they’ve visited here and they just can’t get the town out of their minds. It feels like a favorite painting that has come to life with bright colors, friendly locals and gorgeous scenery. Here, it’s easy to have the life you choose, whether it’s full of activities, groups or hobbies or just long, unhurried days of watching deer graze on the hillside or fish leaping out of the water. Whatever the lifestyle you choose, the Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce is here to help. Please give us a call at 1-800-6EUREKA and order your Eureka Springs Lifestyle Guide to help organize your move.

Extraordinary

Seasons T

he Ozark Mountains are a palette of many colors, with each of our four seasons having its own distinctive hues and fun things to do. In spring, dogwoods and redbuds decorate with white and pink blossoms. Landscaped gardens explode with color. Spring brings a month-long celebration called the May Festival of the Arts. In a ddition, a bumper crop of other spring festivals includes everything from UFO conferences and car shows to music festivals and more. Summer deepens the greens of our mountains and valleys and Blues fans chill out at the Blues Festival. It’s a good time to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Spring Heritage Center surrounding historic Blue Spring. You can also cool off at Onyx Cave, Cosmic Cavern, War Eagle Cavern or one of our many lakes and streams. In August, the Bluegrass Festival has fans coming from far and wide for great “picking” and singing. September will celebrate the Annual Antique Automobile Festival, where hundreds of vintage classics parade through the winding streets.

Extraordinary Seasons

Autumn brings the brilliant colors of Arkansas’ “Flaming Fall Review”. The leaves are approaching their peak colors just in time for the Annual War Eagle Mill Antique Craft Show and the Early Bird Eagle Watch in mid-October. “Voices from the Silent City”, guided cemetery tours and haunted hay rides add even more activities during the month. The Holiday Season is not to be missed! A visit from Santa, the Friday after Thanksgiving, kicks off the holidays. Our Victorian village comes alive with millions of twinkling lights and holiday decorations. This special holiday shopping season fills the village with excitement. An annual Candlelight Tour of Homes, sponsored by the Eureka Springs Preservation Society, along with living windows, holiday lights parade, silver tea, concerts and a sweet treats cookie tour brings the magic and enchantment of the holidays to this Victorian village.

52

Winter is a wonderful time to visit Eureka Springs. Visitors can stretch their vacation dollars by taking advantage of off-season rates. The bonus is that there are still many things to see and do in Eureka Springs. Our usually mild winters allow plenty of days to enjoy fishing, golf and other outdoor activities. The arrival of Santa in Basin Park, the Friday after Thanksgiving, is just the beginning of the Holiday activities. Our musical theaters are also alive with Holiday music and entertainment. See our web site for an updated and detailed calendar of yearround events.

Lodging

C

an accommodations in Eureka Springs also be considered as attractions? Yes! Lodging in Eureka Springs caters to every taste and budget, whether you prefer elegant luxury, a quaint mountain hideaway or a romantic honeymoon suite, a cabin or a bed and breakfast inn. Tent and RV sites are also available. Eureka Springs has a wonderful variety of places to stay. There are historic hotels, some built at the turn of the 19th century. A stay in one of our classic historic hotels is a must to truly appreciate the history of Eureka Springs. Eureka’s population of bed and breakfast inns, storybook cottages and cabins is simply amazing, and a stay at any one of them also qualifies as another “signature” Eureka Springs experience. Like to sleep close to the great out-of-doors? Eureka Springs has h ideaways in the hills and by the lakes and rivers. There are “cozy” to very comfortable lodgings to choose from for your outdoor getaway. In town and all around is a wide range of

modern motels to fit any budget, from familiar chain names to privately owned lodgings and resort motels with everything, including meeting and convention facilities. And, yes, “romantic hideaways” are a Eureka Springs specialty, from plush hotel and motel honeymoon suites complete with private balconies, gardens and whirlpool baths to mountain cottages, cabins and bed and breakfast inns offering seclusion, Victorian charm, fi replaces and hot tubs for two. If you come frequently to Eureka, you’ll have to try each unique accommodation. You’ll meet owners and locals who enjoy your company and are thrilled to see the smile of satisfaction on your face.
