There are few places in America where turn of the 20th Century heritage is preserved and still alive today like that which is found in Eureka Springs. Our entire downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places where the largest collection of Victorian architecture and “gingerbread” homes in the central United States is found. Start your exploration of our historic district by visiting the Eureka Springs Historical Museum located at 95 Main Street in the Calif House (built in 1889), and just down the street don’t miss the Bank of Eureka Springs Museum, a working 100 year old bank that showcases original fixtures, furniture, where you can still pull up a chair to the potbellied stove and more (located in the Cornerstone Bank Building). After three major fires (1883, 1888 and 1890) that destroyed the heart of town, limestone was used to rebuild the city. As you walk our limestone sidewalks you will find one of two municipal libraries in Arkansas, financed by millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

4

There’s also our historic Auditorium, completed just weeks before the stock market crash of 1929, which featured John Phillips Sousa and his 67 piece orchestra as its first concert.

Many other fascinating historical buildings can be found and every building has its story. Real history hounds should seek out our bronze plaques on historic buildings, springs and homes throughout the city as well as the interpretive signs on Main & Spring Streets.

Explore our city in several ways. The Eureka Springs trolley system of today re-creates the principal mode of early “in city” travel, and they offer individual rides as well as narrated tram tours, and while in downtown check out the Walking and Underground Tours. Another great way to learn about Eureka Springs is to take one of the informative Eureka Van Tours, departing from the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center daily. Eureka Springs has the distinction of being named one of America’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, recognized as a Preserve America city, and is an America in Bloom award winner. There are so many interesting “one of a kind” facts that make our city so EXTRAORDINARY. Maybe that’s why we have been featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not so many times!

Eureka Springs has been richly blessed with four distinctive seasons, and each season comes with its own identity, pace, climate, appearance, entertainment and special events. Winter is our quiet season, great for kick back time, romance, or a time to recharge and recover after the busy holiday season. Hide out in luxury lodging, bed and breakfast or a cozy cabin, complete with fireplace. Get pampered at our spas, spoiled with great dining and enjoy our retail shops and galleries retail shops.

5

Summer heats up the hills allowing us to enjoy the lakes, rivers, parks and outdoor activities we have in abundance. Families plan their vacations to enjoy all Eureka Springs has to offer. Fall delivers yet another special time as the hills come alive with the changing of the leaves, giving us warm days, cool nights and a slower pace to enjoy the annual arts and crafts shows and foliage tours. Fall also ushers in the annual events such as the Antique Automobile Festival, Corvette Weekend, War Eagle Arts and Crafts Show, the Ozark Folk Festival and more. Then there are the holiday celebrations with our Veterans Day festivities, Thanksgiving and Christmas before we ring in the New Year.

#OnlyInEureka • 1.800.6EUREKA

Spring brings blooming dogwood and redbud trees with white and pink blossoms. The days grow longer and temps start warming up. This time of the year ushers in the excitement of another vacation season with the opening of our seasonal attractions combined with longstanding special events.

“It’s all about the ride,”is a phrase often said by people that enjoy the road from a motorcycle seat. That’s why riders from all over the United States have discovered Eureka Springs as a motorcycle vacation destination. Sitting in the heart of the beautiful Ozark Mountains, the roads leading in and out of our city make us the best place to headquarter. From routes like the Pig Trail, recognized in USA Today as the 2nd Best Ride in the Country, to back roads and scenic highways that include rolling hills, open stretches of blacktop, twisting curves and switchbacks, you quickly see why Arkansas truly is “the Natural State”.

6

No matter what motorcycling skill level you have, there’s a road with your name on it promising a saddlebag full of great memories. There are many reasons why we have been featured in national publications and on popular television shows like “The Motorhead Traveler” featured on MAV-TV, and why motorcycle clubs and organizations have chosen Eureka Springs for their regional and national rallies. Eureka Springs is favored by many bikers every September as they participate in Bikes, Blues and BBQ, one of the nation’s largest motorcycling events. We have all the amenities needed for a successful event including great rides, biker friendly lodging and camping, good food, drink, shopping, entertainment and nightlife. Part of the “Eureka Experience” is visiting our historic downtown. If you choose to do so, please remember our limestone buildings, sidewalks and hard surfaces positioned in a cavernous canyon amplifies all sound. Therefore when downtown, let’s create an Extraordinary Experience for Everyone. Remember… “Idle is Ideal!”

Intrigue Theater will mystify everyone with “the Illusionist and the Medium.” Nightly Ghost Tours are offered at the 1905 Basin Park Hotel and the 1886 Crescent Hotel, and there are family friendly variety shows. In addition, the Opera in the Ozarks offers professional opera productions every summer. Concerts by national headline acts as well as regional performers and productions are presented throughout the year, and there are festivals and special events staged in the historic Auditorium and Basin Spring Park. America has long had a fascination with trains, so take a scenic tour, lunch or dinner excursion aboard the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway.

Eureka Springs West & Beaver Lake The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the Beaver Dam in 1966 creating a 28,000 acre lake with 449 miles of shoreline. Beaver Lake has become one of the mid-west’s most popular recreational water destinations, perfect for swimming, stand up paddle boarding, boating, tubing and skiing. The clear pristine water and easy access points also make it a favorite scuba diving lake. Anglers love this lake for its largemouth, smallmouth and striper bass fishing, not to mention plentiful supplies of crappie, bream, white bass, and channel and spoonbill catfish. If you like to fly fish, wade or fish from a canoe, the White River tail waters below Beaver Dam are great for rainbow and brown trout. Not really into water sports or fishing but you enjoy the water? Scenic cruises, fall foliage and eagle watch tours are available aboard the Belle of the Ozarks.

The Beaver Dam and Dam Site River Campground are close and easily accessible from Eureka Springs. Visitors can enjoy such conveniences as electricity and fire-rings, drinking water, showers and restrooms, picnic sites, swimming beaches, hiking trails, boat launching ramps, sanitary dump stations, group picnic shelters and amphitheaters -- are also available in the parks. Marinas, outfitters and expert fishing guides are readily available to guarantee a great experience on the water. There’s always a good meal to be found plus rustic cabins, resorts, motels, vacation homes and campgrounds are waiting to host your family vacation, reunion or group visit.

And please, don’t forget the T-Shirt with just the right saying for the kids or Aunt Joan. The crown jewel of shopping in Eureka Springs for many decades has been our talented artists and crafters available in over 20 galleries. Paintings, stained glass, pottery, ceramics, one of a kind jewelry and breath-taking works in wood are just a few of the many art forms you will find. And for the “pickers” there’s countless treasures found in local antique shops and flea markets. Come back time and again to shop for that special birthday, anniversary or wedding present. The hardest part of “eating out” in Eureka Springs is choosing where to go! Most of our restaurants are chef-owned so whether it is gourmet burgers and wood fired pizza or wine pairings at our local fine dining you’ll enjoy personal attention and a meal crafted with loving and skilled hands. So we challenge you to decide; southern fried chicken and catfish or steaks and seafood? Barbeque, Tex-Mex, European, Mediterranean or Oriental? There are so many choices, you may have to extend your stay! Our restaurants are “come as you are”, and when finished, you will leave the table with a smile.

Eureka Springs is one of America’s most distinctive cities dedicated to the creation, exhibition and presentation of art. Visual, Performing, Culinary and Literary are major art forms that shape the arts community of Eureka Springs. We are a multi-layered, multi-talented community made up of artists, craftsmen, writers, actors, musicians, vocalists and gardeners dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences for the art lover. You’ll find a multitude of intimate, delightful galleries where local, regional and national artists are represented displaying the creative works of painters from every medium, sculptors of stone and steel, weavers, potters, jewelers, woodworkers, scrimshanders, decoupers, tolepainters and woodcarvers. There’s the Art Colony on North Main Street and we are less than an hour away from Bentonville, Arkansas, the home of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. May Festival of the Arts is a month long celebration showcasing all of Eureka’s artists with many special events, gallery strolls, the annual White Street Walk and more. There are many other art events throughout the year. In the early 1930’s Louis and Elsie Freund established a local arts school downtown. Continuing that tradition the Eureka Springs School of the Arts offers a wide variety of art classes to all. Building on the legacy of Elsie and Louis Freund who started the first art school in Eureka Springs in the 1940s, The Eureka Springs School of Art was founded by committed, widely respected artists and patrons within the community that felt they both had an obligation and an opportunity to provide art education. ESSA brings together people of mixed backgrounds, ages, and nationalities to make with their hands in a supporting and encouraging environment. It is our belief that art is vital to the human spirit and we are committed to cultivating promoting and encouraging artistic expression by providing art education opportunities in the unique environment of the Ozark mountains. ESSA offers three, five and extended six week concentrations in leather, iron, clay, wood, textiles, painting & drawing and small metal and are currently in open enrollment. To check out ESSA’s 2016 workshops please visit essa-art.org or call (479) 253-5384. Performing arts abound in Eureka Springs in longstanding venues such as the highly acclaimed Opera in the Ozarks at Inspiration Point beginning its 66th season in 2016; the Great Passion Play, America’s number one outdoor drama; the Basin Park Band shell and the historic Auditorium. There are variety shows and music theaters, and many special music festivals from classical to jazz and blues to bluegrass throughout the year. The Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow offers a variety of cooking classes and workshops for the promotion of the tremendous culinary art offerings in Eureka Springs. In addition, the Writers Colony has hosted over eight hundred authors, songwriters, composers, poets, architects and playwrights from the United States and over forty countries to enjoy uninterrupted residency. The Colony presents quarterly “Tales from the South” international public broadcasts featuring host Paula Morell. The Village Writing School, the Carnegie Library, the annual Books in Bloom literary festival and the Bible Museum at the Great Passion Play offering over 7,000 volumes in its collection are absolute highlights of any Literary visit. I guess you could say that the search for better health was the seed that grew to create one of America’s most popular resort towns. We were founded by “health seekers”. Legend has it that Native Americans of the Osage tribes found relaxation and spiritual connectivity here with our springs. Dr. Alva Jackson took an interest in the springs in 1856 and spent the next 20 years promoting the spring water as a medicinal product. Judge L.B. Saunders from Berryville brought national attention to the springs by promoting medicinal and curative benefits through the use of our “healing waters”. Through most of the 1800’s Eureka Springs boasted a residential population of 10,000. However, with the arrival of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railway in 1882 the town’s population and daily visitor count grew as passengers traveled “The Road to Health” to Eureka Springs. In 1880 Eureka Springs water began being bottled and distributed under the “Ozarka” name brand. All of this has set the stage for today’s expanded Massage and Wellness therapeutic offerings found in Eureka Springs. The city has attracted talented trained and skilled professional health practitioners that combine applied new technology and techniques with traditional massage. Eureka Springs has many spas and professional relaxation experts with services ranging from steam cabinets and saunas to massage, aromatherapy, acupressure, facials, weight rooms and exercise facilities, primordial sound medication, Ayurvedic medicine and reflexology. As a natural health conscious community we are proud of our local Farmers Market, our natural food stores and herbal apothecaries and pharmacies.
