AS A RESTORATIVE INSTITUTION: USING STORYTELLING TO ILLUSTRATE AND CONFRONT RACIAL INEQUALITY IN THE US
For decades a portion of the local African American community was allowed to live in a small area known as “Belmar”, walking distance of the well-known Inkwell Beach, a section of the Santa Monica oceanfront where Black beachgoers were welcomed. Belmar was a small, tight-knit collection of shotgun-style houses in a neighborhood where all residents were like family. As part of the post-War, the population in Southern California exploded and construction boomed. Belmar was acquired by the City of Santa Monica for an expansion of its Civic Center. All remnants and traces of Belmar, along with its history were demolished to primarily make way for the proposed Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, which quickly became a landmark and an important venue. The long-time Black residents were forced to relocate to less-desirable locations within the City of Los Angeles. Lives were overturned, a community dismantled, a history erased and Belmar was completely forgotten. This project proposes converting the Civic Auditorium into a Museum of Racial Inequality and Spatial Justice. This would be not only an act of honoring the history of Belmar and of those who were never represented, but also to increase national awareness of how damaging centuries of ethnic hatred and systemic racism are to the United States as a nation and society as a whole.

ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE The Equity Tower is a space dedicated to the speculation of a future in which segregation is not an issue anymore. An open void that gets natural light from the top guides visitors back to the underground level: the gallery turns into an exercise of humility, reverence and acknowledgment of the building’s architectural and philosophical experience

OPGRAVEN AMSTERDAM STRATEGIC AFFORDABLE HOUSING MASTER’S STUDIO B | INA 5210 LOCATION: AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS For this project, the challenge was to use a 17th century Dutch Renaissance painting as a starting point and from the canvas develop a visual/formal/material concept. From “Still life with herring and oysters” by Floris Van Dyck, material qualities, finishes and forms were explored to propose a strategic affordable housing in a preserved 17th century house located in the Canal District of Amsterdam, one of the most expensive areas of the city, that faces an increasing gentrification.
OUR LORD IN THE ATTIC 38 OUDEZIJDS VOORBURGWAL
Zooming in the herring‘s fish scale, its biological features reveal a pattern that is identified, reshaped and reused as an architectural element. The array is meant to accommodate the studios, juxtaposed in a dynamic rhythm yet following the material palette achieved from the artwork.

COWORKING SPACE MASTER’S STUDIO A | INA 5110 LOCATION: DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES How can one design an interior space that meets a complex program, the current social demand of DTLA while enclosed in an existing, rigid building? Taking the idea of encapsulation to the abandoned Beaux-Arts building, the intervention is enveloped by the historical façade – that is now reactivated by a series of strategic extrusions throughout the ground floor – connecting the program with the sidewalk and inviting those who walk by to take a glimpse and check the space out. To break the austerity of traditional workspaces, color and transparency are used thoroughly to offer a more welcoming atmosphere and complement the playful, tetris-shaped architecture. There are no walls or circulation restrictions, as each space was meant to be occupied by everyone.
FORMER SILVERWOOD’S BUILDING DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES
Red is used not only as a color, but as a statement: the path of circulation throughout the floors branches, analogously like a tree, connecting all the interior elements.

REFUGE HABITATION DESIGNED FROM A KEYWORD:
ISOLATION CONCEPTION OF ARCHITECTURAL FORM 2 LOCATION: FUNDÃO ISLAND, RIO DE JANEIRO All i had in hand was a word, a downhill site and the challenge. The organic form and
strong lines came up from sketches, which also guided the placement of the house on the site. The idea was to make the area’s topography simulate a living creature, delineating the house form and embracing it. Two main “limbs” cross each other, generating a central cavity, where the access is located. The result is a buried house, with its lighting captured by strategic openings on the ceiling and walls, reinforcing the idea of isolation in the home.
