Get the most out of your stay with our top six suggestions…

1) Take a bracing, stress-busting stroll or bike ride along Cardiff Bay Barrage, which boasts panoramic seascapes, a sandy play area, skate park, AdiZone outdoor gym and the Enormous Crocodile bench, perfect for snapping selfies. Watch the Barrage locks – an incredible feat of engineering – in motion, then make a pitstop at the café to rest and refuel.

2) For an interactive experience of the Barrage, young explorers can download the Tiger Bay Trail app and have fun uncovering the history of the area and its hidden inhabitants along the way. You can follow the points on the digital map, read a story book, listen to audio clips and take photos. The app is free to download on iOS and Android devices.

3) If watersports float your boat, head to Cardiff Sailing Centre (CSC). It’s situated on the Barrage embankment – the perfect spot for providing sailing tuition. Whether you’re a novice or more seasoned enthusiast, you can take your pick from dinghy, keelboat, powerboating and shore-based courses for all ages. CSC is a Royal Yachting Association Training, Sailability and OnBoard Centre, and holds an inSport bronze award from Disability Sport Wales.

4) The Cardiff Bay waterfront offers a blend of historic landmarks, stunning views and lively venues, nestled alongside cosmopolitan bars and restaurants. Whether you’re looking to enjoy world class shows at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff’s iconic performing arts and cultural venue, or soak up the unique atmosphere of Mermaid Quay’s laid-back cafés and vibrant nightlife, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

5) Want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city? Make a beeline for the Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve. The former saltmarsh has been transformed into a tranquil site for nature conservation, where you can explore the wooden footpaths and viewing platform, and go wildlifespotting. Explorer Trail, so little ones can find out all about the reserve’s flora and fauna through fascinating facts and activities: cardiffharbour.com/wpcontent/uploads/Wetlands-WildlifeExplorer-1.pdf

6) Gain a different perspective by heading to the waterfront, near Roald Dahl Plass, hopping aboard a boat and taking a ride around the Bay. With a variety of operators, there’s plenty of choice. You can go on a leisurely, sightseeing tour and discover more about the area; experience a thrilling, speedy ride on a RIB; hire your very own boat; or travel to Bute Park in the city centre.
