Welcome to the 28th European Film Festival. The very ďŹ rst European Film Festival in Myanmar was held three decades ago. Since then, it has grown in size and content. This year is no exception: we will bring you ďŹ lms from 13 EU member states and our friends from Israel, Norway, and Switzerland, and we will reach beyond Yangon with an added weekend-long edition in Mandalay. As you will see, "European cinema" covers a variety of aesthetics, styles of storytelling, topics and themes, and the stories cross national borders and moments in time: this year for example, we bring you a love story from behind the Iron Curtain in post-war Europe, one man's struggle with today's global economy, or watershed moments in European LGBT history. There is unlimited diversity in Europe's cultural heritage. At the same time, our European interconnectedness is evident within each ďŹ lms, as we take you from France to Norway, from the Netherlands to Italy, Poland to Paris, Belgium to Istanbul. As such, this festival shines a light on our common European identity, and the broader, universal human messages that transcend geography and borders. They tell us that from a silent farmer to a world-known adventurer, everyone has a story worth telling.

Olivier is an overburdened husband, father and foreman at a distribution centre. One day, Olivier receives a phone call to work from his children’s school, requesting him to collect his kids, as his wife Laura has failed to show up. Olivier picks up the kids and returns home to discover Laura missing and her wardrobe emptied. Met with a wall of silence when trying to investigate the mysterious disappearance, Olivier is left alone with the void left by his wife’s absence, while having to navigate between children and work. Alternating between the struggles and light, at times quirky moments, Our Struggles is a perceptive film about a relatable, flawed figure, whose good intentions shine through his at times morally conflicting actions.

Following the death of her father, Olga and her veterinarian partner, Jan, discover that in addition to having managed every aspect of her husband’s living existence, Olga's mother is also managing his afterlife. Against her husband's wish to be cremated, Olga's mother orders that he be buried in a cemetery plot next to her house. After a futile rebellion against his mother-in-law's decision, Jan realizes that most men in the family – including himself – sit passively like domestic pets, while their wives consider it their task to safeguard them from an early grave through absolute control. The consequent yearning for the lost freedom sets in motion a fantastically absurd series of events whereby Jan tries to compensate for his lost years by pursuing life on his own terms. Tiger Theory is a sterling example of a drama-comedy that entertains while tackling thought-provoking thematic undercurrents, such as late-life crises, secrets to happy partnerships, and cemented gender roles in relationships.

Helena, Maija, and Pekka all have something to hide when their parents come to the city for an unexpected visit. Helena is struggling as a single mother with a full-time job that gets slightly over her head; Maija doesn’t have a boyfriend but lives in fact together with a woman; and Pekka’s IT company has gone bankrupt. Pekka, the successful and wealthy CEO who never caused his parents any headaches, is now penniless and homeless. Keeping up the facade has become something of a full-time job for him. He sneaks into funerals to grab a few bites at the funeral feast and tricks unsuspecting people into giving him money - just to throw a lavish dinner party for his family the next day. As the party ends in tragedy that seemingly brings them closer, the noose around his neck becomes tighter and tighter: how much longer can he keep his secret, and has the burden become too heavy? What starts as a quirky family comedy soon turns into a cutting drama about a man who gradually loses everything. The film is a sobering reminder of the fact that anyone can be trapped in malign poverty, as well as crippling shame associated with it. Comic and tragic at the same time, The Human Part is a satire on modern urban life, in which failure is not an option.

A group of German construction workers is hired to build a hydroelectric powerstation near a remote Bulgarian village. The ill-prepared project comes to a standstill due to a sudden shortage in the water supply. Boredom soon spreads among the workers as they are waiting for the construction manager, Vincent, to solve the problem. The lack of common language exacerbates mistrust and prejudice, which fosters mutual contempt between the foreign workers and locals. The exception is Meinhard: a haggard loner. Meinhard befriends some of the Bulgarians, which ignites tension across the board. The film’s title, Western, aptly depicts the thematic undercurrents of this drama where raw language and two intersecting male communities meet in a politically-volatile and physically-harsh frontier. It is said that ”Puskás” is the most well-known Hungarian word. This documentary portrays the man behind the name, Ferenc Puskás: the greatest Hungarian football player of all-time. Growing up next to a football field with a coach for a father predestined him to play football from an early age. However, it was arguably his diligence, adaptability and all-encompassing love for the game that made him the captain of Hungary’s “Golden Team”, a Real Madrid star forward, and a successful football coach in Greece and Australia. Puskás was no stranger to adversity. He fled Hungary after the failed 1956 revolution against the Soviet Union and had to restart his career at age 31 – overweight after a two-year ban. He overcame all his obstacles with an unbeatable spirit that led him to become an internationally renowned football legend. Brazilian footballer Pelé once said: “If Puskás had lived in this world, the world of television and the Internet, he could have been the best player - even on the Moon.” In this documentary, his family and teammates remember the man for who he truly was, with both firmly feet on the ground.

Reuven is a grouchy, aging Jerusalem garage owner with more of an affinity for engine parts than his own well-being. Villa Biondi is a residence for women with mental disorders located on the idyllic outskirts Pistoya, Tuscany. The duo embarks on a road trip where they explore the true meaning of happiness and what it really means to be “crazy”. It is the year 1947, and Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl wants to prove that South Americans had settled in Polynesia in order to counter the established perceptions. To demonstrate his point, he assembles a team of five people who, together with him, build a raft exclusively from local natural materials in order to sail from Peru to Asia across the Pacific - a trip that could have taken place 1500 years ago. The scars of the Second World War remain fresh in 1949 Poland. Musician Wiktor and his team roam the country in search of traditional folk music – mournful tales that reflect the hardships of Polish rural life. The songs act as a basis for the repertoire of the “Mazurek ensemble”: a music ensemble for which Wiktor auditions musicians and dancers to showcase the authentic sounds of the country. Zula, a youthful and enigmatic beauty selected for the ensemble, soon becomes its star: not only enchanting the audience but Wiktor too, who falls madly in love with the mysterious girl. Their romance unfolds against the backdrop of rising communism sentiments in Poland. When the ruling party increasingly interferes and transforms the ensemble into a propaganda organ, Wiktor decides to flee to the West, begging Zula to join him. What follows is a tale of romance split between East and West over the course of many years. Oscar-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski has created a deeply poetic black and white masterpiece about oppression, freedom and impossible love. Wiktor and Zula drift from Poland to Paris and back again unable to live with nor live without each other. Elle Marja is a fourteen-year-old girl living in northern Sweden in the 1930s. A member of the Sámi: a Northern European indigenous people known especially for reindeer-herding. Elle Marja and her sister, along with other Sámi children, are forced to attend a so-called ‘nomad boarding school’, where racism and discriminatory policies are rife. Dreaming of another life, Elle Marja decides she must become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture. Seventy years later, Elle Marja - or Christina, as she has renamed herself to escape her past - reluctantly returns for her sister’s funeral. Back in her birthplace, Christina is confronted by her traumatic childhood memories. Defying conventions of storytelling of a historical drama, Sámi Blood is a touching coming-of-age film following the tracks of a clever and curious girl, from her first love to rebellion against her parents. 1950s Zurich, Switzerland: Young teacher Ernst Ostertag becomes a member of the Swiss gay organisation "Der Kreis" (The Circle), which campaigned for the rights of homosexuals from 1943 to 1967. There he meets and falls in love with drag-star Röbi Rapp. Together, the two experience the heyday and destruction of the organization and its eponymous magazine – regarded throughout Europe as a pioneer of gay emancipation. While Röbi is consumed with his first serious love affair, a relationship that will last his whole life, Ernst has to decide between his sexual identity and his middle-class existence as a teacher at an all-girl school. In this film based on a true story, scripted and re-enacted scenes are complemented by original photographs and interviews conducted in 2013 with contemporary witnesses Ernst Ostertag, Röbi Rapp, and other protagonists. Pierre is a 30-year-old dairy farmer - a part of a dying breed of small farmers in a world of big agribusiness. A man of few words, Pierre’s life revolves around the family farm he took over, his cows, his veterinarian sister and his parents. When the first cases of an epidemic disease break out in France, Pierre finds out one of his animals is infected. Losing his cows is not an option for Pierre. He has nothing else and will do whatever it takes to save them. Very rarely broached in French film and often the victim of caricature, the everyday life of farmers is at the heart of this debut feature by Hubert Charuel, which was screened in a special screening at Critics’ Week at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. A son of farmers, the director achieves a gripping and accurate portrayal of life in the countryside, a life dedicated to animals and the financial stakes they represent, all against the backdrop of deep rural France. Nicolas III, King of Belgium, is a lonely soul who has a palpable feeling that he is living the wrong life. He embarks on a state visit to Istanbul, Turkey, with a British filmmaker Duncan Lloyd, who has been commissioned by the Belgian Palace to shoot a documentary intended to polish the monarch’s rather dull image. In Istanbul, the King hears that Wallonia, Belgium’s southern half, has declared its independence. The King, bursting with a new-found purpose, must return home at once to save his kingdom. For once, he declares, he will write his own damn speech. As they rally to depart, a solar storm strikes the earth, causing communications to collapse and airspace to shut down; no phones, no planes. To make matters worse, Turkish security coldly dismisses the King’s suggestion that they return home by road. However, the King has no intention of waiting out this storm: Lloyd, sniffing an opportunity of historical proportions, hatches a dubious escape plan that involves flowery dresses and singing Bulgarians. King of the Belgians is a mockumentary of epic proportions: a mixture of a road movie and a comedy in the style of a documentary, the film offers a satirical story of a king who finds himself while getting lost in the Balkans.

10-year-old Oleg lives with his resilient grandmother in a small Eastern Ukrainian village – a stone’s throw from the frontline of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Having no other place to go, they stay and watch as others leave the village. Life becomes increasingly difficult with each passing day, and the war offers no end in sight. Beautifully observed and edited across a three-year timespan, the film subtly depicts the gradual erosion of Oleg’s innocence beneath the pressures of conflict. The Distant Barking of Dogs unveils the consequences of war bearing down children, and by natural extension, the scars and self-taught life lessons that this generation will carry with them into the future.
