2012 Shooting Stars: Europe’s Finest Young Actors Christian Juhl Lemche President, European Film Promotion

It’s February – it’s time for the Berlin International Film Festival. It’s time for presenting Europe’s most promising young actors on the main stage of the Berlinale Palast to the world press, industry and public as part of EFP ’s internationally acclaimed programme, SHOOTING STARS. This extraordinary group of ten up-and-coming actors has been selected by an international jury for this honor. They represent acting skills from a broad range of European countries proving that talent will always cross borders. During the whirlwind three-day event at the Berlinale, the SHOOTING STARS will be guided through a weekend of round-the-clock activities. The festivities will be capped off with the presentation of the SHOOTING STARS Awards, supported by TESIRO. EFP would like to take this opportunity to thank Dieter Kosslick for his dedicated commitment to supporting Europe’s up-and comers during the Berlinale. We – and many others – are most grateful. The SHOOTING STARS event is supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, the ten participating EFP members, main partner TESIRO and copartner MINI. Additional support is provided by Stratus/Perugia IFF, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Film-und Medienstiftung NRW, arvato Entertainment Europe and Moët & Chandon. EFP’s main media partner for this initiative is the international trade magazine, Variety. Our congratulations to the SHOOTING STARS 2012. Use the spotlight!

The SHOOTING STARS are annually selected as Europe’s most promising young actors. Already well-known and established in their native countries, they are on the brink of an international breakthrough. EFP’s initiative at the Berlinale, where the actors are introduced to the industry, press and public, provides a platform to showcase the talent and drive of these shining young stars.

impdef.indd 4

To become a SHOOTING STAR, the actors must first be nominated by one of EFP’s 32 member organisations, which are based throughout Europe. The final selection of ten young actors is made by an independent jury of industry professionals and filmmakers. The five member jury includes a film producer, a well-known actor (a former SHOOTING STAR), a casting director, a director and a critic. During the first weekend of the Berlinale (this year, from Saturday, Feb. 11th – Monday, Feb. 13th), the SHOOTING STARS take part in several events: A PRESS CONFERENCE with the international media. Each year international journalists, TV broadcasters

19/01/12 17:29

5

and photographers come to this mustattend press conference. Networking opportunities EFP organises a number of meetings and events for the SHOOTING STARS with the international industry and guests, including a Gala Reception, a get-together with US and international agents, and speed-dating between actors and casting directors. Award Ceremony The highlight of the weekend is the public presentation of the SHOOTING STARS Awards on the main stage of the Berlinale Palast. The awards recognise the artistic achievement of the actors and are donated by TESIRO. This gathering of the best of Europe’s young actors is

impdef.indd 5

broadcast by various international TV stations. The Award Ceremony will take place on Monday, February 13th at the Berlinale Palast. Touring SHOOTING STARS Programme EFP has created a programme to extend the benefits reaped by the young actors presented in Berlin. A selection of these young actors are presented with their newest films at high quality international film festivals each year. This initiative has become an important and valuable follow-up programme to the launch of SHOOTING STARS in Berlin. www.shooting-stars.eu Visit our website and follow SHOOTING STARS on facebook for the most recent information on all of the SHOOTING STARS.

19/01/12 17:29

INTERNATIONAL CASTING DIRECTORS NETWORK During the Berlin International Film Festival 2005, fifteen casting directors from seven countries have founded the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN). The initiative came about in connection with the EFP project SHOOTING STARS. It is the first network of its kind and is aimed exclusively at casting directors who cast feature films. Up until now, casting directors were only organised in national associations. The network offers casting directors the chance to exchange ideas on an international level about their different ways of working, to take advantage

impdef.indd 6

of synergies with international coproductions and to attract greater attention to the work of casting a film. The ICDN meets annualy during the SHOOTING STARS weekend. EUROPEAN FILM PROMOTION WHO WE ARE European Film Promotion (EFP) is the only existing international network of organisations promoting and marketing European cinema worldwide. Founded in 1997, the EFP network now comprises 32 professional organisations from 33 European countries, who are experts in promoting and marketing their own national cinema. Under the

19/01/12 17:29

7

EFP umbrella, all of these organisations work together on the promotion of European cinema and talent around the world. To this end, EFP devises, organises and carries out promotional activities and events on behalf of films, directors, producers, actors and other film practitioners proposed by its members. The aims and objectives of these activities are • to increase the competitive opportunities for European films in the international market place • to improve access for European film professionals to the international market place • to support the development of new

impdef.indd 7

up-and-coming talent • to contribute, where possible, to the opening of new markets for European film • to enhance the distribution and visibility of European film worldwide • to further share the accumulated knowledge and experience of the association via its European-wide network As a clearing house of information surrounding the world of cinema – its development, production, sales and distribution – EFP is unique in its strong position thanks to the cultural diversity and the collective knowledge of its membership.

jury’s comment In SIMON AND THE OAKS, Skarsgård conveys depth, emotion and deep longing as a young man plunged into an identity crisis and desperate to know more about his family background. His acting feels like an exploration that we are lucky enough to witness.

jury’s comment With OUTBOUND, Ularu not only carries an entire film on her shoulders but does so with a complex, difficult character in convincing, magnetic fashion. Steely yet vulnerable, she possesses an amazing and adaptable physical presence, and eyes that really do serve as windows to her soul.
