YOUTH. AMBITION. PASSION. As President of European Film Promotion (EFP), and on behalf of its members, I invite you to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of Shooting Stars at the Berlinale. Over two decades, Shooting Stars has showcased the commitment, style and indisputable talent of 293 of Europe’s most promising young actors. In 1998, Shooting Stars was the first ever initiative to focus on acting talent and for many actors, it marked the start of prestigious international careers. In choosing this year’s Shooting Stars, the jury witnessed the focus the young actors bring to their craft as well as the unshakeable passion that drives their ambition. They all have that “certain something” which lights up the screen. While in Berlin, the Shooting Stars will take part in press presentations, interviews, casting events, culminating with the presentation of the European Shooting Stars Award at the Berlinale Palast. There are many people to thank for our two successful decades, and foremost among them is Festival Director, Dieter Kosslick. ABOUT EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS EBRUARY 10 – 13 AT THE BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL European Shooting Stars, the flagship initiative of European Film Promotion (EFP), celebrates its 20th anniversary at the Berlinale this year. In 1998, it was the first ever international initiative to focus on acting talent and the vital role they play in a film’s life. Ten prominent young actors from throughout Europe – all with a track record and on the brink of their international careers – are chosen by a jury of experts from a pool of candidates nominated by EFP members. During the whirlwind first weekend of the festival, the European Shooting Stars are guided through various high profile events involving the press, public and industry placing them at the top of the film and entertainment agenda which unfolds each year at the Berlinale. ELCOME COCKTAIL Invitation-only Kick-Off to the weekend events for Shooting Stars and invited guests. This informal get together offers the young actors an opportunity to meet and discuss with each other before the weekend’s activities get started. ARTE PRESENTS EUROPEAN COUPLES ON A SOFA The Shooting Stars are invited to take part in the filming of 3 minute episodes of the short film series, “Couples”, produced by Friday Film for ARTE. Each European couple played by the Shooting Stars will perform a scene on the sofa of a couples therapist. The 5 episodes will be broadcast on ARTE.

CTOR ’S INDUSTRY NETWORK At this invitation-only event, the European Shooting Stars meet with members of the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN) as well as with other influential industry professionals, which provides the actors with a strong start-up network as they continue along the path to international careers. RESENTATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL MEDIA AT AUDI BERLINALE LOUNGE The European Shooting Stars will be presented to the international media during the opening weekend of the Berlinale. The press presentation and group photo call (Monday, February 13) is the gateway to individual interview and portrait sessions with many of the international press corps’ leading publications, broadcasters and photographers. WARD CEREMONY The highlight of the weekend is the presentation of the European Shooting Stars to the public on the main stage of the Berlinale Palast. In recognition of the actors’ artistic achievement, the Berlin International Film Festival presents the European Shooting Stars Award, which is sponsored by TESIRO, to each actor.

DORKA GRYLLUS ACTRESS AND SHOOTING STAR 2005 – HUNGARY Dorka Gryllus won acclaim in her native country at the age of 20 with her role in András Sólyom’s School Of Senses, and won Best Actress at the 2005 Hungarian Film Week for Robert A. Pejo’s Pallas Pashamende. Since then, Dorka has worked on international projects such as Irina Palm by Belgium’s Sam Gabarski as well Fatih Akin’s Soul Kitchen. She received two Best Actress awards for her work in the Hungarian film Demimonde last year. Dorka’s most recent project is Bridge Of Sighs by János Szász, with former Shooting Star Zsolt Nagy.
LUCINDA SYSON CASTING DIRECTOR – UNITED KINGDOM Lucinda Syson started as a casting director 25 years ago after graduating in French and Linguistics. Her training under Priscilla John began with films like Alien 3 and Seven Years In Tibet. Her first film as casting director was Udayan Prasad’s Brothers In Trouble, and Lucinda has since worked with such filmmakers as Luc Besson (Fifth Element), Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins), Alfonso Cuarón (Children Of Men), receiving an Artios nomination for Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 film Kick-Ass. She is a member of ICDN and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
XAVIER KOLLER DIRECTOR – SWITZERLAND Xavier Koller began working as an actor and director for theatre, TV and commercials before making the short Fano Hill in 1969. His feature debut, Hannibal, premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 1973. In 1991, Koller received an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for Journey Of Hope and is now based in Los Angeles, working on English-language features like Squanto, A Warrior’s Tale and Ring Of Fire. He returned to Europe to shoot Gripsholm, Einer wie ich (Someone Like Me), Die Schwarzen Brüder and, most recently, Little Mountain Boy (Schellen-Ursli).
PANDORA DA CUNHA TELLES PRODUCER – PORTUGAL Pandora da Cunha Telles started her career in production in 2001 at Filmes de Fundo and was selected as one of EFP’s Producers on the Move in Cannes in 2004. In 2009, Pandora established the production company Ukbar Filmes with Pablo Iraola, producing Vicente Alves do Ó’s Florbela, winner of six Sophias. Her latest productions are The Bridges Of Sarajevo (Official selection Cannes), and The Train Of Salt And Sugar by Licinio Azevedo (Locarno). Most recently, Pandora is working on The Surge by Daniela Thomas and Joaquim by Marcelo Gomes. Pandora is president of APCA.
JAN LUMHOLDT WRITER /CRITIC – SWEDEN Jan Lumholdt has been a regular contributor and reviewer for the renowned Stockholm daily Svenska Dagbladet since 2001. He studied Literature and Film History at the University of Lund. Among his publications are “Lars von Trier: Interviews” (University Press of Mississippi, 2003) and “Harriet Andersson” (Alfabeta, 2005), for which he was awarded the Jurgen Schildt Award for excellence in cinema writing. Lumholdt is the chairman of The Swedish Association of Film Critics and a member of the Swedish Oscar Committee.

INTERNATIONAL CASTING DIRECTORS NETWORK
On February 13, 2005, during the Berlinale, 15 casting directors from 7 countries founded the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN) under the auspices of European Film Promotion. Today, the network has 78 members from 24 different countries. The ICDN offers casting directors the opportunity to engage on an international level concerning working methods and standards, to take advantage of synergies with international co-productions and to attract greater attention to the work of casting a film. The goals of the ICDN include: . Establishing a recognized standard of professionalism in the industry . Enhancing the stature of the profession of casting director . Taking on responsibility to help shape film policy and processes . Providing members with professional support and resources . Honouring achievements of its members The annual ICDN meeting is held in Berlin in February during the Berlin International Film Festival. The chair of ICDN is Debbie McWilliams (Casting Consultancy UK).

ICDN ESTABLISHES AWARD IN HONOUR OF CASTING DIRECTORS ICDN’s idea for honouring the work of casting directors took root in August 2016 when the organization and the Locarno Film Festival created the first European Casting Directors Award. The juried award was presented to the French team of Antoinette Boulat and Elsa Pharaon for their work on Emmanuelle Bercot’s Standing Tall. Two other prestigious organizations chose 2016 to honour the achievements of Casting Directors for the first time. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts honoured Nina Gold (Game Of Thrones, Star Wars) with a Special Award and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded an Honorary Oscar to Lynn Stalmaster (The Graduate and West Side Story). ICDN is committed to continuing its leadership role on behalf of Casting Directors internationally.

EUROPEAN FILM PROMOTION TWENTY YEARS YOUNG : DRIVING EUROPEAN CINEMA FORWARD European Film Promotion (EFP) is the only existing international network of organisations promoting and marketing European cinema worldwide. Founded in 1997 by ten members as a non-profit organisation, EFP has grown into a leading international promotional body with a membership of 38 organisations representing 37 countries in Europe – from Portugal in the West to Georgia in the East. EFP represents the diverse interests of its members through a variety of initiatives promoting European film, talent and industry, taking place under the EFP banner at prestigious international festivals and markets around the globe. EFP’s joint promotional strategies span a broad spectrum and include artistic and business-oriented platforms with a focus on three main areas: Films & Talent, Networking and Market Access. EFP has developed innovative programmes and initiatives in collaboration with established and respected partners with the aim of creating a sustainable system which supports European cinema. Some of EFP’s long-standing partners include the Berlinale, Toronto Film Festival, Busan Film Festival, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the American Film Market, as well as new initiatives with the Sydney Film Festival, and The Metrograph Cinema in New York. At this year’s Berlinale, EFP will be celebrating 20 years together with European Shooting Stars, which was its first initiative and is recognized as its flagship programme.
