05 EUROPEAN FILM PROMOTION AT FILMART

Since 2011, Hong Kong’s well-established FILMART has been the host for European Film Promotion’s (EFP) European Umbrella – a pan-European booth for Europe’s sales companies and EFP member organisations. The FILMART works as an important hub for sales to Asian countries and is regarded as a bridge between the East and West, focusing on China as a main business partner. It is at the European Umbrella where Asia’s industry has the opportunity to get to know recent developments in feature films, documentaries, animation and children’s films from all over Europe. The European Umbrella offers services to 24 attending European sales agents this year who do business on behalf of European cinema. Thanks to the backing of Creative Europe – MEDIA and the generous financial contribution of German Films, and the additional support by the Danish Film Institute and Istituto Luce Cinecittà, the European Umbrella offers again 72 square meters with a designated area for German sales companies.

European Film Promotion ( EFP ) is the only existing international network of organisations promoting and marketing European cinema worldwide. F ounded in 1997, the EFP network now comprises professional organisations from 37 European countries, who are experts in promoting and marketing their own national cinema. Under the EFP umbrella, all of these organisations work together on the promotion of European films and talent around the world. EFP devises, organises and carries out promotional activities and events on behalf of films, directors, producers, actors and sales agents. EFP ’s activities are financially supported by the Creative Europe –  MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the EFP member organisations. EFP ’s promotion and PR activities are backed by private and public sponsors. The Hamburg-based office is supported by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM ), the Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Hamburg.

EFP organises a European Showcase with five to six films in St.  Petersburg and arranges afterwards an attractive European online film festival on a leading Russian VoD platform. This new two-track approach of both an online European film week and the theatrical presentation of European films to the audience in St. Petersburg makes WestWind into a special endeavour.

MAKING WAVES DOWNUNDER AT THE SYDNEY IFF (JUNE) In partnership with the Sydney Film Festival, EFP highlights new works by some of Europe’s most exciting women directors. OPENING DOORS AT THE BUSAN IFF, SOUTH KOREA (OCTOBER) The aim of this initiative is to highlight the European films screening at this important cultural and business event in Asia, raise their visibility to the press, public and industry and support the sales of these films with a strong presence at the Asian Film Market. EFP activities are aimed at increasing the profile of the European films at the festival, assisting the European industry, particularly sales agents by running an umbrella booth at the Asian Film Market, and, in general, supporting the artistic delegation of directors in attendance at the event.

36

NET WORKING PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE AT THE CANNES IFF (MAY) EFP offers support and guidance to upand-coming European producers during the Cannes Film Festival. In a highly selective process, the producers are chosen to take part in this initiative. EFP creates a tightly focused working environment involving project pitchings, 1 : 1 meetings and discussions. The aim of this initiative is to assist the producers in finding co-production partners for their upcoming projects, to strengthen industry networking opportunities and to offer a platform where their potential can be recognised.
