WELCOME

06

P

roducers Lab Toronto is an initiative created by European Film  Promotion ( EFP ), in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation ( OMDC ) and the Toronto International Film Festival* ( TIFF ). Producers Lab Toronto aims to facilitate and increase international co-productions between European and Canadian producers and strengthens the networking between the participating professionals from both continents. For its sixth year, Producers Lab Toronto 2015 will welcome back Australia and New Zealand as guest countries.

Modelled on EFP ’s annual Producers On The Move project, Producers Lab Toronto brings together twenty experienced feature film producers from across Europe and Canada and a total of four producers from Australia and New Zealand for a three-day programme at the start of the Toronto International Film Festival. The participants have the chance to exchange ideas and knowledge and build a foundation to pursue concrete co-production opportunities. They also benefit from the significant presence of the international film industry in Toronto, which offers them an unparalleled platform to pitch their projects. Financial support for Producers Lab Toronto is provided by Creative Europe, the participating EFP members, the OMDC , and TIFF with support from Eurimages and Telefilm Canada. We welcome back the New Zealand Film Commission and Screen Australia as our continuing partners.

ABOUT THE LAB

09

P

roducers Lab Toronto is designed for independent producers with a track record of successful project development and production. Apart from demonstrating a strong motivation in co-producing, the participants all have experience in international co-production and have at least one project ready to pitch. The 24 participants come together for a three-day programme of meetings, pitching sessions, case studies and panel discussions to encourage the financing, production and distribution of co-productions between Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

Unless by Alan Gilsenan

SUCCESS STORY

„Several years ago we had the pleasure of meeting Irish producer, Tristan Orpen Lynch of Subotica, during Producers Lab Toronto. Conversations began and a relationship developed. His PLT project was a natural Ireland-Canada co-production based on the novel Unless by Canadian author Carol Shields, and set in Toronto. We went on to co-develop, co-finance and co-produce the film with Subotica, and worked closely with Irish writer/director Alan Gilsenan. Starring Catherine Keener, Unless is currently in post-production and we look forward to its launch later this year. Producers Lab Toronto was instrumental in the genesis of this film.“ — Julia Sereny, Sienna Films, Toronto, participant 2013
