The Hotel Barging Experience

A gentle cruise on a hotel barge is the perfect way to discover the very soul of Europe, exploring its wonderful countryside and historical treasures and meeting its many friendly, diverse people. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, our hotel barge voyages allow you to travel in luxury without the strains of packing and unpacking, whilst enjoying a balanced blend of daily excursions and fascinating cruising.

THE JOURNEY HAS BEGUN

You are collected at the designated meeting point by either the Captain or your tour guide and escorted by air-conditioned minibus to your hotel barge. After a champagne welcome and the opportunity to meet the English-speaking crew and your fellow passengers, we will show you to your comfortable stateroom or suite, with its full en suite facilities.

Then, after a day of cruising and sightseeing, your barge moors up for the night and there is plenty of time for a cocktail before dinner, or perhaps to enjoy a relaxing soak in the spa pool that is on most of our vessels. In Burgundy, the Loire Valley and England, hot-air ballooning is an exciting option. Ballooning generally takes place in the early hours just after dawn or before sunset, when the air is still and the light is perfect for drifting gently along and gazing down at the beautiful countryside below.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

A European Waterways hotel barge cruise includes accommodation in air-conditioned, en suite cabins, all gourmet meals aboard and ashore, fine wines, a champagne welcome, an all day open bar, all excursions and admittance fees, use of bicycles and other barge facilities such as a spa pool, local transfers and, of course, the services of the experienced crew.

We sometimes embark on a short cruise on the first evening and immediately the fascinating world of barge cruising begins to unfold before you. Then, perhaps after an aperitif, it’s time to indulge in your first gourmet dining experience aboard, complemented, of course, by fine wines.

RELAX AND UNWIND

Each day, once under way, your hotel barge moves so sedately from one peaceful mooring to the next, you can just wander along the tow-path, getting on or off at pretty locks. You may stumble across some local villagers playing a game of boules, or discover a vineyard, its vines laden with grapes. The barges all carry bicycles for towpath riding and other excursions ashore, and the little villages and farms we discover as we cruise by become part of the adventure. Alternatively, just absorb the ever-changing scenery from a comfortable lounger or deck-chair on the sun deck. 3

Outstanding Service

Our crews are mainly British or French and they all speak English, so there is no need to worry about a language barrier when they are telling you about the local culture, history, wines or gastronomy. The various roles undertaken by your crew will soon become clear. Your Captain, an experienced barge master, will impress you with his ability to guide the impossibly large vessel into the smallest lock and through the lowest of bridges with inches to spare. He may also double as your tour guide, taking your party around family-owned vineyards, fine castles or perhaps a small crystal works, but always returning you to your barge in time for the next culinary event or stage in your cruising journey. Your Master Chef, as well as creating the finest of dishes, is invariably something of a culinary historian and a mine of information when it comes to regional recipes, cheeses and, of course, wine.

The attentive hostesses, who are also the housekeepers, will serve the meals and wines, and are there to cater to your every need allowing you to sit back and relax. The deck-hand beavers away behind the scenes keeping the ship clean and tidy, repositioning the barge vehicle and preparing the bicycles. He or she may also escort you on excursions. Although not officially accredited as tour guides, they do have a real interest in the local region. Our highly professional crews take their roles very seriously, keeping in the background, but always finding time to share with you some aspect of local knowledge which just adds to the intrigue and fascination during your gentle cruise along one of Europeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delightful waterways.

Inviting Accommodation

Our hotel barges benefit from an annual refurbishment and this may vary from redecoration and refurnishing of the accommodation or public areas of a vessel, to a complete refit of bedroom suites and their en suite bathrooms. Whichever barge you choose to cruise on, you can be assured that a lot of thought and care has gone into combining traditional features like hardwood panelling, antique furniture and dĂŠcor, with expected creature comforts such as air-conditioning and central heating. All of our barges have a library, games and a CD player/iPod dock and some of them a spa pool on the sun deck, TV/DVD, or computer with internet access, often WiFi. Some even have a telescope for an after-dinner gaze into the night sky. There is also, of course, an open bar stocked with a wide range of alcoholic and soft drinks. The accommodation on each hotel barge ranges from charming twin and double-bedded staterooms to suites with sitting areas â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but all with closet and drawer storage and private en suite shower rooms. For all our cruises, you can select a specific cabin, particularly if you book early. Because every vessel is designed individually, some offer additional facilities such as a rooftop sun deck, passenger-friendly wheelhouse, demonstration galley, single cabins for tour leaders and exercise equipment.

Cuisine & Dining Aboard

The classic traditions of French and International cuisine are an unforgettable highlight of your cruise. Our chefs are experienced, highly-trained culinary artists, whose gastronomic creations are often rated higher by our discerning clients than those they have sampled in top restaurants. Before you wake each morning, a crew member has visited the local patisserie to collect newly baked breads, buttery croissants and a variety of fresh pastries, which will be laid out in the saloon with an array of fresh fruit and other accompaniments. Together with the aroma of fresh coffee brewing, the day has just begun and you may want to enjoy your breakfast on deck. Luncheon will be a colourful arrangement of salads, pâtes, savoury quiches and of course, a selection of cheeses, all accompanied by an excellent choice of wines from the barge cellar. This daytime feast is often enjoyed on the sun deck, perhaps while cruising. Dinner is the culinary highlight of each day. Served by candlelight, each course is a delicious creation, complemented by fine wines. Your chef will use the best, freshest ingredients, bought from the wonderful local markets and pick fresh herbs from the small onboard herb garden to skilfully produce mouthwatering regional and national dishes that are full of flavour. Our chefs will be very happy to accommodate requests for vegetarian and special diets and these should be made at the time of reservation.

Whichever region in Europe our hotel barges meander through, but particularly in France, you can be sure there is a truly wonderful choice of wines and cheeses to enjoy, and our chefs and wine experts know exactly how to marry one with the other to make every meal onboard a memorable one. Many of the great wine-growing regions sprang up in the wake of Roman invasion and the influence of these master viticulturers has continued through the centuries. From the Minervois, Corbieres and Côtes de Roussillon wines of Southern France to the full-bodied Côte de Nuits and Vosne Romanée vintages of Burgundy; from the renowned dry white wines of Sancerre and Chablis to the distinctive products of the Alsace and Moselle regions. And, of course, Champagne. There is something to please every palate – and we endeavour to serve, with great care, a wide selection on every cruise.

We also understand the history and making of every cheese we offer and each cheese course is a delightful journey into the local region’s rich heritage and traditions. The cheeses all have a story to tell, from the creamy products of France such as Époisses and Chèvre au Poivre, to the memorably named delights of Scotland and Ireland such as Whiskey Chase and Cashel Blue. And let’s not forget the flavoursome varieties of cheeses that Holland and Italy have to offer. After one thousand years of wine production and the creation of many hundreds of cheeses, the locals are convinced that quality and choice are fundamental to everyday life, and we think you will be too.

Enticing Excursions

Every hotel barge cruise includes daily excursions to some fascinating local places of interest - imposing citadels or elegant châteaux, colourful markets or renowned wine cellars, medieval hilltop villages or magnificent palaces and cathedrals. Many of the excursions are a brief walk away from the barge or, if further, the ever present air-conditioned minibus will carry you there in comfort. Each excursion is led by a deck-hand/tour guide who usually has some amusing stories to tell about the places you visit and is adept at finding those lesser known, hidden away gems. For the history lovers amongst you, there will be visits to famous royal palaces and castles such as Hampton Court and Windsor beside the River Thames; spectacular medieval fortified cities such as Carcassonne in the Midi; battlefields in Scotland – even Troglodyte cave dwellings in the Loire Valley! variety of cultural experiences on offer is vast. You can browse the The tiny shops of skilled craftsmen in the villages of Burgundy or admire the stunning Renaissance architecture and art of Venice, Ferrara, Mantua and Chioggia. In Holland, see the delicate Delft porcelain being hand-painted, while in England you can tour riverside art galleries and boatyards where classic wooden riverboats have been built for generations. And if you want to indulge fully in the local gastronomic delights, we will visit local producers of regional specialities such as olives, truffles, foie gras, scotch whisky and Armagnac. Finally, no cruise would be complete without sampling some fine wines at a respected domaine nearby, maybe in Chablis, Beaune or Sancerre.

We know that many of our passengers enjoy taking some exercise during their barge cruise, so all of our vessels carry bicycles for everyone on board to use. Almost anytime during the cruise, the crew can offload the bikes for you to take a gentle pedal along the canal towpath, perhaps to the next pretty village or lock.

For those passengers who would like to be a little more adventurous, a number of our barges now offer a “Biking Plus” option, as follows: •

Whilst others are relaxing on deck, or maybe enjoying a stroll, you can take a bike on most days and follow an interesting, but not too challenging route which we will have already carefully researched.

We’ll give you clearly marked maps for each round trip route and a backpack with everything you might need so that, for an hour or two, you can explore the surrounding countryside and villages along the lanes, towpaths and byways.

If you get stuck or lost, we will come to fetch you. Otherwise, you can just rejoin the barge where you left her – or maybe a little further along the canal.

•

We will arrange the hotel barge itinerary so that you won’t miss any of the organised excursions or much of the cruising, but you will have seen a little more of the people & places around you – and done yourself some good at the same time!

Have you ever ridden a tandem bicycle? Most people haven’t but on some of our hotel barges with tandems on board, you can get the chance. As romantic a way to travel as you could imagine on a bicycle made for two and not as hard as you might think. As you both cycle together along the towpaths of Burgundy or perhaps the Canal du Midi, you just need to decide who is going to steer!

Burgundy Heart of Rural France – Vineyards & Châteaux

BURGUNDY…

…boasts some of the world’s finest wines with around 60,000 acres of sunlit vines and arguably the prettiest canals in France. The Burgundy Canal winds its way in smooth curves through the heart of renowned wine growing areas such as Chablis, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, or rises steeply through a flight of locks that appear like staircases. The Nivernais Canal meanders alongside the picturesque River Yonne, through a largely undiscovered region near the Morvan Hills, passing sleepy villages and Charolais cattle grazing in the lush pastures. This is the original home of hotel barging with its hand-swung bridges and old logging sites, and where time seems to have stood still for centuries. The landscape around the Burgundy Canal is one of rolling hills eroded over the centuries and covered in forests of oak, maple and pine and where spring, summer and autumn each leave a unique signature. Medieval towns are surrounded by unspoilt countryside and the wonderful markets have stalls brimming with fresh local products cultivated on the fertile plains.

Cruise Burgundy Aboard the 12 Passenger La Belle Epoque La Belle Epoque is a spacious, luxurious hotel barge and sister ship to Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Impressionniste. Although she originally carried logs from Burgundy to Paris, she was skilfully converted into a delightful hotel barge. She is now the perfect vessel for cruising the Upper Burgundy Canal with its towpaths that are ideal for walking and cycling. She has been designed with both elegance and passenger comfort in mind and offers a sun deck with spa-pool, wood-panelled saloon/dining room and other luxury amenities. She is also fully air-conditioned. The spacious cabins offer a choice of twin or double beds with marble en suite facilities. The Captain leads a crew of six comprising Master Chef, Deck Hand, Tour Guide and two Housekeepers.

On the way from the summit of Mt Auxois, we look at Alesia, the last battle site between the Gauls and Romans that took place in 52 B.C. After lunch we cruise through woodlands and rolling fields with great towpath biking and walking opportunities past the tiny canalside villages of Nogent, Courcelles and Les Granges. Dinner aboard.

Gentle morning cruise as your hotel barge descends through the picturesque locks and past the beautiful 16th century Renaissance palace and gardens of Château d’Ancy le Franc. Lunch at a local auberge, followed by a visit to the vineyards and town of Chablis dating back to Roman times. We enjoy a private wine tasting at a renowned local winemaker of its Premier and Grand Cru wines popularized by Alexis Lichine in the 1950’s. Dinner aboard.

Following lunch we visit the 16th century Renaissance-style Château de Tanlay, nestling serenely within this picturesque village. There is a sun deck to relax on with a glass of wine as you glide through the pretty Burgundy countryside, a relaxing spa pool and, of course, bicycles for exploring along the towpath before rejoining the hotel barge at one of the locks up ahead. Our morning cruise takes us through some delightful locks and past vineyard-clad hillsides to our rural mooring at Vincelles. The afternoon excursion is to Chablis, home of one of the most famous white wines in the world. A tasting in one of the town’s aged cellars will introduce you to some of the local Petit Chablis and Chablis wines. Dinner aboard.

ST. FLORENTIN TO FLOGNY LA CHAPELLE

After a delicious breakfast, we visit Auxerre, the capital of lower Burgundy situated in the heart of a wine growing region most famous for its Chablis wine. The success of this thriving town is celebrated by architectural jewels such as the ornately painted 15th century Clock Tower, the soaring Gothic cathedrals of Saint Germain and Saint Stephen and an abundance of ornate Renaissance houses bordering tree-lined squares. After lunch back on board, our gentle afternoon cruise past lock houses and sleepy hamlets is to Flogny la Chapelle. Dinner aboard.

Our cruise today is barging at its best and is an ideal time to hop off for a bicycle ride or perhaps help out at one of the pretty locks. After a lazy lunch your tour guide escorts you into Tanlay by foot to view its beautiful 16th century Renaissance-style château. The interior is luxuriously furnished and decorated by some astonishing frescoes. Soak up some true French village atmosphere by stopping for a drink at the bar situated in front of the main gates. After a breakfast of fluffy croissants and pastries from the local patisserie, we continue our cruise to Lezinnes. After lunch we take a short ride to the Château d’Ancy-le-Franc. This Renaissance jewel, set in the centre of a large park on the banks of the canal, houses the biggest collection of Renaissance murals in France. The immense quadrilateral holds a rich decor attributed to some of the most celebrated artists of the 16th and 17th century. Dinner aboard.

This morning’s cruise takes us to our final mooring at Ancy-leFranc and on the way we descend through a series of quaint hand-operated locks. After lunch we visit the exquisite Abbaye de Fontenay, a marvellous medieval community with its cloisters, capitulary hall, dormitories and fish basins full of trout. Enjoy the evening and take in the view with a drink on the panoramic deck of the Savoir Faire, before indulging in the special candlelit Captain’s Farewell Dinner that your chef has prepared.

After lunch we visit this charming town, also called “the Little Venice of the Gatinais” because of its numerous canals. Today, we begin our cruise into the upper Loire region. Affectionately known as the “Garden of Paris”, this little known region gently reveals its secrets. After lunch, we visit the Château de Fontainebleau. To walk through this palace is to walk through the history of France and every French royal family added its own architectural style and features when in residence. On our drive back to the barge we may visit the artist community of Barbizon. We will moor for the night in Nemours. Dinner aboard.

After breakfast, we set off on for a leisurely cruise to the charming village of Châtillon Coligny. This afternoon, we will take a drive out to the splendid 16th century Château de Saint Fargeau which is over a thousand years old & probably the most important place of historical interest in this unspoilt rural region, the Puisaye. Later, in the evening, there is time to stroll around the ramparts surrounding Châtillon-Coligny. Dinner aboard.

Today, continuing our cruise higher up the canal we reach Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses. This “staircase” of seven locks was built in 1648 and is an impressive monument to the engineers of the past. After a relaxing lunch we take a short drive to the town of Gien, on the banks of the River Loire, and famous for its faïence earthenware. Visit the faïence factory and museum. Dinner aboard.

ROGNY TO BRIARE

After passing through the locks of Rogny, we have reached the highest point of the canal and descend slowly towards the River Loire. At Briare, we cross the river on the Pont Canal de Briare, designed and built by Gustav Eiffel in 1890. Later we drive out to Sancerre to sample some of this delicious wine and perhaps taste some of the local Crottin de Chavignol cheese on our way back to the barge. Captain’s farewell dinner aboard.

This morning we cross the aqueduct over the River Orb and then ascend the 7-lock flight of Fonserannes before reaching the world’s oldest canal tunnel at Malpas. On arrival at the picturesque village of Poilhes we take an excursion out to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1215, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. A fascinating recreation in miniature of the bloodthirsty Cathar rebellion and small museum complete the intriguing picture. Dinner aboard.

This morning’s visit is to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy the Archbishop’s Palace and Horreum. Morning visit to Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today. BASSANEL TO JOUARRES

Morning cruise along the 330-year-old Midi canal ascending its trademark locks, walking from one to the next or perhaps cycling ahead to explore the village of Homps, once an important commandery for the Knights Hospitaller. Afternoon excursion for a winery tour at Château Ollieux Romanis in the Corbières, one of the few regions to receive the much envied French mark of approval for wines known as A.O.C. (Appellation d’Origine Controlée). Upon return to the barge we continue cruising under the shade of the plane trees to moor at Jouarres lock, a pleasant bicycle ride from the Lac de Jouarres. This morning we take the minibus to a Benedictine Abbey founded in the 8th century. Nestled in Lagrasse, a village awarded the title of “Plus beaux villages de France” (most beautiful villages of France) and home to many artisans who have set up workshops in the medieval centre, the restored Abbey was once one of the most prosperous thanks to Charlemagne’s charter. A chance to sample some local cuisine with lunch ashore in a spectacular setting overlooking the Corbières veneyards. Upon return to the barge we continue cruising to a picturesque mooring under the trees, a perfect opportunity to try your hand at the local sport of boules, followed by an alfresco dinner aboard.

Fascinating morning tour of Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today with its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting. This morning’s suggested visit is a tasting at the Oulibo, the local olive oil pressoir. After an olive tasting, a short drive up the Gorge de la Cesse brings you into the hilltop town of Minerve, where your guide will tell the harrowing tale of the Cathar siege during the 13th century. Later after a long lunch, you may choose either a relaxing afternoon’s cruising, or perhaps join your guide for a sociable wine-tasting at a local winery such as Les Trois Blasons. Dinner aboard.

This morning, we visit the old market town of Pezenas, the first seat of the Languedoc court.The architecture is unique to the town because of the “Hotels Particuliers”, or mansions belonging to noble families who followed the court. Later, the cruise takes in the 17th century feat of engineering, the “Neuf Ecluses” (or staircase locks) and the 18th century canal bridge which carries Athos over the Orb River to our mooring near the village of Portiragnes. Cruise the Bordeaux Region Aboard the 8 passenger Rosa The Canal des Deux Mers links the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, passing through the region of l’Occitanie – a veritable palette of colours and scents created by orchards and vineyards before joining the Canal du Midi. We visit historic fortified ‘bastides’ such as Valence d’Agen, learn about the region’s artists and rural culture and cruise by picturesque old villages and quaint farms. And of course, as this cruise is near Bordeaux wine country, there will be plenty of opportunity to sample a part of France where good food and wine is a way of life. Rosa is an old Dutch “Clipper” barge that was completely refitted in 2010 to a high specification. Her saloon is particularly welcoming and features attractive wood panelling, comfortable seating and a cosy bar. Morning cruise to Briare and Gustave Eiffel’s magical aqueduct across the River Loire with walking and bicycling for those that wish to do so. We preview Friday’s crossing of this amazing 10,000 ton, 662 metre Pont Canal which was completed in September 1896. This afternoon we visit Château de Sully sur Loire. The castle originally belonged to Georges de la Trémoïlle, who infuriated Joan of Arc by encouraging the Dauphin to devote himself to idle hunting in the forests around Sully. After Joan’s failure to liberate Paris in 1430, de la Trémoïlle virtually imprisoned her in the castle. In the 18thC Voltaire, exiled from Paris, also spent time at the Château. Dinner aboard.

While cruising in the morning we may pull in to the tiny landing stage next to Domaine de Fontenay. A two-minute walk brings us to the courtyard where we can taste their range of Touraine wines as an aperitif before lunch while moored at Blere. In the afternoon we cruise under the 5-arch bridge of the impressive Château de Chenonceau and moor at Chisseaux. From there we depart by minibus to visit the Château. Upon our return we cruise upstream to Chissay en Touraine. We have dinner tonight in one of the local restaurants specializing in regional cooking.

A morning cruise takes us towards the troglodyte village of Bourré. We tie up at the lock, a short walk from one of the more unusual dwellings in the Loire Valley, La Magnaneraie. The Coquillat family have grown up in this hillside troglodyte habitation, which has been in turn a wine cellar, a quarry for the tuffeau stone, and lastly, a silkworm nursery. After lunch we drive east to Valencay, one of the most splendid châteaux of the Loire and the home of Napoleon’s foreign minister, Talleyrand. Returning to the barge we cruise to Montrichard where we moor for the night. Dinner aboard.

There is a plethora of vineyards spread across the undulating plains as far as the eye can see and there will be plenty of opportunity to sample the sparkling wine to which the region has given its name, including a private champagne tasting in the vast cellars of Moët et Chandon. This is also a part of France that is rich in both modern and ancient history and during our voyage we visit a number of significant landmarks, châteaux and one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in the country where the kings of France were crowned. This morning marks a cruising highlight: a walk through the Keukenhof Gardens, Holland's famous garden park, with more than 100 acres filled with over 7 million flowering bulbs. We stroll through breathtaking waves of colour on this unforgettable halfday excursion. After lunch we cruise to Leiden, a perfect town for those who like to cycle or walk. The city’s history dates back to Roman times and includes more recent sites such as the church, St. Pieterskerk, from which the pilgrims departed for America. History is best experienced by walking or cycling, occasionally stopping to look at the architecture. Dinner ashore in Leiden.

Thursday, Day 5

Leiden to Rotterdam

This morning a tour of Delft, a fascinating town full of small canals and humpback bridges and is best explored by bicycle or on foot. Many beautiful buildings illustrate the city's historic connection with the Dutch East India Company. The birthplace of Jan Vermeer, Delft is also famous for its Delft tableware, and we visit a factory, a 5 minute walk from the barge mooring, to learn how this world-famous porcelain is made. Return to the barge for a cruise to Rotterdam. An early lunch followed by a visit to the Ketel One distillery in Schiedam for our private 2pm tour. Ketel One vodka is distilled from 100% wheat in copper pot stills, filtered over loose charcoal, and rests in tile lined tanks until ready. Dinner on board.

F riday, Day 6 Rotterdam to Gouda

After breakfast, we cruise to Gouda followed by a water bus to Kinderdijk. Nowhere in the world will you find as many windmills as near the village of Kinderdijk. C1740, 19 sturdy windmills were built here and have been well preserved to the present day. In 1997 the mills of Kinderdijk were put on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Waterbus back to the hotel barge. After lunch, from our mooring at Gouda we walk right into town. Our sightseeing includes St. John's Church, famous for its 70 magnificent stained glass windows and St.Catherine's Hospice, decorated with paintings from the School of The Hague. Our last stop is the town square, home to the Stadhuis, Gouda's town hall and Waag, where cheese is weighed. Private cheese tasting and tour. Tonight enjoy the Captains Farewell Dinner on board.

Morning excursion with guided tour of the Renaissance city of Ferrara, including the14thC Estense Castle with its moat, drawbridges, marble balconies and sumptuous apartments, and the Schifanoia Palace with its fabulous 15thC frescoes. We also see the cathedral façade with its sculpted images described as an Illustrated Bible. Return to the hotel barge for an afternoon canal cruise past villages and farmsteads to San Leone for dinner on board, accompanied by live piano music.

Our final cruise has a dramatic approach to Mantua, home of the poet Virgil, artists Mantegna and Donatello and captivating lakeside setting. Mantua displays extraordinary neo-classical and baroque architecture, portrayed in the 14thC Ducal Palace housing some 15 gardens and courtyards, a museum, basilica and theatre. After a stroll or cycle along the 18thC Istrian sea wall in Pellestrina, we cruise to Chioggia, city of Goldoni’s plays. Here we visit the picturesque town centre and colourful fish market. We also see the Cathedral and the Piazzetta Vigo before cruising on to the River Po delta. Passing through a nature reserve with flamingos and occasional heron, snipe and other wetland wildfowl, we travel upriver to Taglio di Po for dinner ashore hosted by the owners at the beautiful 17thC Villa Ca’Zen, a private stately home by the river where Lord Byron courted the Countess Giuccioli and wrote some of his best poetry.

Today we visit the 14th century fairytale Cawdor Castle immortalised Shakespeare's Macbeth, housing a superb collection of tapestries, pictures and furniture with beautiful landscaped gardens. We also visit Culloden Moor, site of the last battle on British soil in 1746. After lunch we cruise Loch Dochfour and Lock Ness to Fort Augustus stopping for a time to admire Urquhart Castle and then cruise the south shore to moor near Fort Augustus Abbey. Dinner on board.

We cruise up the staircase of five locks through the village of Fort Augustus, with time to shop and look around this pretty Caledonian gem. Later we drive through Glen Moriston and stunning Highland countryside to romantic medieval Eilean Donan Castle, setting for the film Highlander. It has an idyllic island setting with commanding views of three sea lochs and frequent sightings of otters, dolphins and the Isle of Skye. We dine out tonight at a local restaurant.

FORT AUGUSTUS TO LAGGAN LOCKS

We leave Fort Augustus today and cruise to Laggan Locks via Kytra and Cullochy locks, across the pretty little Loch Oich and through Laggan Avenue where the imposing woodland comes down to the waters edge. For our excursion, we visit Urquhart Castle and Invermoriston Falls where, if you are lucky, you may see a wild salmon leaping its away upstream. Dinner on board.

LAGGAN LOCKS TO GAIRLOCHY

Today we cruise through Laggan Locks for a morning cruise across Loch Lochy to Gairlochy. The main tour is a mountain gondola trip which will take you 2150 feet up the slopes of Britain’s eighth highest mountain, Aonach Mor, to enjoy the panoramic scenery from above. Later there is the opportunity to see the World War II Commando memorial, or perhaps the woollen mill at Spean Bridge, selling traditional knitwear and tweeds. Dinner on board.

GAIRLOCHY to BANAVIE

Today we cruise from Gairlochy to the top of ‘Neptune’s staircase’ at Banavie, a flight of eight locks and a spectacular feat of engineering. We also pass Moy Bridge, the last original, hand-operated bridge on the Caledonian Canal. Our tours are to the mystic battlefields of Glencoe and to the Ben Nevis distillery for an insight into the secrets of the various stages of whisky preparation and of course, a tasting of a wee dram or two. This morning we cruise upstream and take a short walk to the Tudor manor house of Dorney Court, a very special home that has been owned by the Palmer family for more than 450 years and used regularly as a film location. Then we cruise past the fabulous waterside houses of Bray and through the spectacular Cliveden Reach to moor at Cliveden House itself. Once home to the Astor family it has amazing gardens and was of course, the scene of political scandal and intrigue. Dinner aboard.

A morning cruise to Henley-on-Thames through fabulous countryside to our final mooring along the famous Henley Regatta Rowing Course. Then an earlier lunch, followed by a drive to Oxford for a fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, founded by Cardinal Wolsey and then again by King Henry VIII. You will be given a personal tour by the eccentric owner Sean Ryan, who, with traditional Irish musicians, will relate to you the fascinating history of the castle and its part in founding the American Constitution. A full day excursion to Galway City, a lively university city and the cultural centre for Irish-speaking regions in Western Ireland. Return to Shannon Princess and set sail across beautiful Lough Derg, passing Forrest Park and ancient mountains as we head for Mountshannon – a lovely lakeside village perched above the Lough. Explore the Heart of Europe If you are looking for a different cruising experience, we offer a number of ‘voyages of exploration’ of varying duration along some delightful inland waterways in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Luxemburg. Are available in a number of regions in France. On our wine charters we take you directly to the vineyards for private tastings and employ a wine expert to explain the grapes, cultivation methods and history at some of the “off the beaten track” vineyards. You will be tasting fine Burgundies such as Nuits St-Georges, Santenay and Vosne Romanée, often première or grand crus vintages that we have chosen with care. In the Loire Valley we will introduce you to crisp Vouvray and Touraine wines, nurtured for centuries by their Chateau-owning families, or further south you can enjoy the lighter, fruitier wines of Provence and the Languedoc-Roussillon. There is an enormous variety of regional wines – from the Corbières and Minervois regions of the South of France, East across the Camargue to Provence, past Picpoul de Pinet, Faugères and the Côtes de Provence vineyards, North along the Rhône and Saône Valley, through the Côte de Rhône and Beaujolais region to the Côte de Nuits and Chablis vineyards of Burgundy. We cruise the Upper Loire and introduce you to the Côte Giennois and Sancerre wines, along the Loire Valley itself. In Alsace we explore the route des Grand Crus in the Vosges hills. The Champagne and Moselle regions also have excellent wines of course which, coupled with local liqueurs, complement your dining experience aboard. These days there are great wines in Southern England and even the silver birch wines of Moniack Castle in Scotland reach our tables. We have developed strong relationships with many renowned vineyards for over thirty years, seeing a new generation of viticulturers combining modern techniques with age-old processes. Most of our Captains have been with us for some years and have gradually acquired an in-depth knowledge of the vineyards and wines across France in particular. Part of their role as hosts is to share this accumulation of knowledge gradually with you during the week through vineyard visits and explanations of every wine served with care aboard.

Even if you are not normally a lover of shopping, the vast array of fascinating shops and markets you can discover on one of our cruises may change your mind. Most of our cruises are through rural areas, but we are often just a short distance from some of the most wonderful old towns and cities in Europe, where there are great shopping opportunities. You may want to visit some of the brocantes or ‘flea markets’ for unusual antiques, or perhaps you have an eye for the latest fashion and would prefer to browse around a couturièr's boutique, or maybe you just enjoy exploring the vibrant local marchés. Whatever your preference, there are many shopping possibilities in some of the most picturesque parts of Europe which will allow you to embrace local culture as part of your holiday and, perhaps, even find the ideal memento of your cruise experience with us. Travelling to Your Hotel Barge

Getting there can often be half the fun!

By Train

Every European Waterways cruise is fully inclusive, except for travel to and from the designated meeting point, allowing passengers the freedom to make their own arrangements. Many of our guests prefer to extend their tour, staying at hotels before or after the cruise or making a more leisurely journey by car or train.

Rail services in Europe, and particularly in France, are excellent. The high speed TGV trains operate from Paris to all regions and link up with the Eurostar trains from London. Transfer from local station to meeting point is usually very easy, or a direct barge pick up can often be arranged from the platform. Your pre-cruise travel documents will give all the details necessary for you to make your train reservations in advance.

Hotels

By Plane

Our designated meeting points mostly have a hotel option that we have carefully selected to offer a comfortable stay for one or more nights in the cruise region. Meeting times are predominantly on a Sunday afternoon, with return transfers on the following Saturday morning. For our Burgundy cruises return transfers are from a meeting point in central Paris. For charter parties, we are able to meet you at any hotel or other meeting point of your choice within a 30 minute drive of the hotel barge.

By Car

Driving to the hotel barge through rural countryside at your own pace in your own or a hired car can be a very enjoyable â&#x20AC;&#x153;top and tailâ&#x20AC;? to a cruise. For passengers travelling from the UK, there are many cross channel routes, including the Eurotunnel which takes only 35 minutes. Parking is available at the meeting point hotel or at another convenient location. We can also provide clear directions, or a direct pick-up can often be arranged. Please note that parking is at your own risk and expense.

As well as the major hubs such as Paris, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Brussels, there are many well served regional airports near our cruise routes such as Lyon, Montpellier, Carcassonne, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Venice, Verona and Inverness. Smaller airfields are also often conveniently located for passengers arriving by private or chartered aircraft.
