Here is Why My Mercedes Ticking While it’s off Introduction
Strange sounds are always surprising. Some sounds come when the car is running, some while the car is acceleration. There are also some issues that can make the car to produce noise when the car is turned off. Many owners get the strange noise to come when the engine is turned off and they wonder, what makes such sound to come even while there engine set totally off? Is it a sign of a very serious issue? So here are some common causes than I’m gonna share with the Mercedes cars owners that what causes ticking noise after they completely turn off the car.
What causes the ticking noise to come while the car is off?
Leakage of oil
The leakage of oil can make a ticking sound. If there is any damage in the oil system, the oil leaks out while the car is turned off. Lack of oil makes the engine to run rough. Due to lack of lubrication, the engine parts come in contact to each other directly and make a ticking noise while running.
Worn head gasket
The head gasket prevents the leakage of coolant to the engine and the exhaust system. If the head gasket is leaking, then the coolant may leak to the engine combustion chamber or get more heated that usual. Heating of the coolant can lead to strange sounds like ticking.
Loose engine parts
Engine may get some parts loose. As they become loose, they shake while running and even when the car is turned off, they collide with other components to produce a metallic ticking noise. While dangling of these parts, you hear the sound.
Damaged relay
Relays are provided in the electrical systems of the car for safe operation of the electrical systems. When the relays are damaged, the power supply magnet makes the supply of power from mains to the motor. This causes instrument panel to click and tick.
Faulty stepper motor
The stepper motor is an electrical motor that controls the idling speed in the car. When these stepper motors fail, they make loud ticking sounds at the control panel. A faulty stepper motor can lead to improper air flow to the car engine
Faults in the HVAC controller
The HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The HVAC system controls the climate in the car by maintaining proper temperature and air quality into the car. The system gets some problems in the mechanical parts where a loud noises comes out. Malfunctioning of the sensors of the HVAC system can also lead to loud sounds at the instrument panel.
A bad actuator
It is a blend door actuator in the HVAC system. It is a motor that makes the HVAC system run continuously. If the blend door actuator fails, then it would lead to loud knocking and ticking noises. The actuator cools the one part and defrost another. So it makes the heat to flow from one part to the other in order to cool the cabin. Even where the car is turned off, the blend door actuator would produce knocking sound.
What to do?
Ticking noise can be a sign of an actuator problem as well as sign of an issue that has to be fixed earlier. If you are getting ticking noises anywhere in the car after you turn off the car, then the diagnosis you have to do is first inspection. Inspect the source of the sound. Check the hood and the exhaust tail pipe to check if there is any leakage of oil or coolant. You may get various smells of oil or coolant from car. Inspect the gaskets, mainly the head gaskets and the gaskets in the oil system. The hoses are to be checked at the engine. Faulty parts are to be replaced.
Then check the relays, the stepper motor and the actuator in the HVAC system. The repairs are to be done by the car professionals.
Conclusion
Take your car to diagnose the problem today if you are having the ticking noise in the car. The inspection of the complex parts are to be done by the car mechanic
