By Jimmy Grayling NEW figures show that the Costa del Sol is a trouble spot for speeding drivers, with almost €10 million worth of fines issued last year. That places Malaga second in the national provincial ranking for 2016, being surpassed only by Madrid. A total of €9,530,000 in fines was generated by traffic cameras and radars across the province compared with €11 million in the Spanish capital. Malaga thus exceeded the total fines issued in several autonomous regions, including the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Navarra, while the entire Valencian Community raised just €10 million. The province also contains three of the busiest traffic cameras in the country, according to data
from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). These are located on the A-7 motorway at kilometres 246 (Cerrado de Calderon) and 256 (Rincon de la Victoria), plus kilometre 10 of the MA-20 Malaga bypass, a former section of the Autovia del Mediterraneo coastal motorway. Generating €1.52 million in 2016, the latter, situated in the ‘false’ Carlos Haya tunnel, provided the most sanctions, with the trio together issuing €3.6 million worth of tickets. Controversially, however, little to none of the cash is reinvested in Malaga’s ailing road network while the state’s profit margin continues to surge. Socialist councillor and secretary general of the PSOE opposition party in Malaga Miguel Angel Heredia had some strong words on the issue as he
told media: “It appears that Malaga has three radars in the DGT Top 20. “How can we be the second province where the state collects the most money from traffic infringements if we don’t have the second-greatest volume of traffic in the country? “Every year the government collects more traffic fines – in 2013 it was €5.7 million, in 2014 it grew to €8.7 million and by 2016 it has increased to €9.6 million. “The cameras are not placed where the greatest number of accidents occur, and are just designed to hunt drivers. “We once again request that the money collected in our province is reinvested to improve road safety and signage.”

Storm damage FUENGIROLA’S Council are carrying out a series of improvements to Torreblanca’s Parque de la Presas, following damage from rainstorms. by Sally Underwood Maria Jesus Pascual, Councillor for Green Spaces, has visited the works, explaining, "parks such as this, that contain a natural stream, always suffer in rainy periods… and it would be a shame not to be able to use it all year round. These works therefore allow locals to enjoy nature without leaving town and make this beautiful space visitable again.” She added, “it is a complicated job because not only did we have to clean up the area, but also create bathrooms, a stairway, install wiring and irrigation, trim trees that were in a dangerous condition, plant out, create new natural steps with stones to avoid using other elements that could be washed away by the water.” She concluded the area was now once again “in an optimal condition.” The saga of the damaged park has been ongoing for several years. In mid-2006, a project to create the green space was started, although by December 2007 it was still not complete and students from local schools lent a hand to finish it off. In January 2008 it finally opened its doors, before being expanded again in 2015.
Works have returned the park to its former glory
Budget boom SAN PEDRO ALCANTARA’S annual budget is set to rise to around €7.5 million this year. Deputy Mayor, Rafael Piña, said the sum "has never been seen in San Pedro and will be added to the €3 million currently sitting in the treasury.” He added the town’s accounts have gone from only €800,000 in 2015 to their current, much larger figure in only two years. He explained, "when we arrived at the council in 2015, we found a small and exhausted budget and lots of bills,", adding, "a year later we created an interim budget because we needed to know the reality of the necessary expenses and investments." He concluded, "it was a complex process,” but that the town finally has a budget free of that of Marbella, “which in turn will speed up and reduce the workload in Marbella.” The funds are set to go towards urban improvements, refurbishing the interior of the performing arts centre, as well as the municipal sports facilities and to re-asphalting roads.

Millions for most vulnerable
FUENGIROLA’S Council has earmarked around €1.2 million for its Home Help Service, which sees 333 vulnerable locals helped by social workers. The council has awarded the contract for supplying the home helpers to company Clece, who will provide 79 employees to help the elderly or infirm with personal hygiene and looking after their homes. Francisco Jose Martin, the town’s Councillor for Social Services, explained, "it is a service that is working very well and is much sought-after; in fact there is a small waiting list. This service gives people their freedom back.” Tasks include helping the elderly or unwell with their food, clothing, cleaning and general home maintenance of the home, as well as offering them company, support in personal hygiene, supervision outside the home and arranging leisure activities. The service is provided Monday to Friday, and sometimes on Saturdays, and maintains “constant” communication between clients and their social workers. The company will also offer hairdressing and podiatry services, as well as workshops on sports and computer sciences. They also offer clients QR code bracelets, which workers can scan to access the wearer’s medical history, making staff change over much simpler.
Miss Malaga TWO WOMEN from Mijas have represented the town in Costa del Sol beauty contest, Miss Grand Malaga.
Mijas’ two contestants meet Tamara Vera
by Sally Underwood Tamara Vera, Councillor for Festivals, said, "both women were in contact with the council after reaching the final of the event, so we decided to meet them to show our support.” She added, "these types of events are another way to promote our town and we hope the
girls enjoy their day.” The contest began with more than 50 participants, only 30 of which reached the final. Mariana Rico and Irene Navarro became Mijas’ representatives. Ms Rico explained, "I have always liked the modelling world and when I had the opportunity to represent Malaga I didn’t hesitate.” Ms Navarro, added
she was, “nervous but excited”, explaining, “it is very exciting. I can’t wait to experience every minute, every show and meet the others.” The council sent their congratulations, saying, "we wish you good luck and above all we encourage you to enjoy this experience, as that is the most important thing."
Over the rainbow MARBELLA’S delegate for Health, Ana Isabel Gonzalez and the town’s Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Ana Leschiera, have launched a guide against homophobic abuse. The pamphlet, which was presented at the Hospital Real de la Misercordia, was put together by the council to promote International Day against LGBTphobia. The guide, which was created by the Malaga Asociacion Ojala, in conjunction with Marbella Council’s Department for Diversity, will be distributed throughout the town’s municipal buildings and will also be available online on the council’s website at www.marbella.es.

Guernica in Fuengirola - 80 years on PABLO PICASSO produced one of his most famous anti-war paintings ‘Guernica’ 80 years ago following the bombing of that town. On April 26, 1937, at the behest of General Franco, the German Luftwaffe Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria launched wave after wave of attacks on the former Basque capital killing hundreds. Now in memory of the event, an unidentified street artist has reproduced the painting in the deserted river bed near to the bridge on the Paseo Maritimo in Fuengirola hoping to obtain a few cents from passers-by for his work. As can be seen from the photograph, this piece is some metres away from the street above and he has to rely on money being thrown to him.

Camp fun Pedro Cuevas announces this year’s activities
by Staff Reporter FUENGIROLA’S Council has opened registration for this year’s sports summer camp for kids, with prices staying the same as last year. Pedro Cuevas, the town’s Councillor for Sports, explained, “the council is always thinking about the problem of finding activities for kids over the summer and we provide both a summer school and sports camp.”
The camp, which will take place in the Elola sports complex and David Mecca swimming pool, will run once in July, offering 140 places, and once in August, with 115 spaces. Prices are €100 for a month for children who have previously been registered and €150 for those who have not. Mr Cuevas commented, "with this camp we hope to achieve three aims: helping working parents who find it
Road works MARBELLA’S Council has committed to improving the pavement and infrastructure on Calle Montenebros, with a budget of €250,000. Blanca Fernandez, Councillor for Public Works, said the project would sold “important deficiencies” in a road which is “very much deteriorated by the passage of time and subsequent works.” She added infrastructure would also be upgraded, with improvements to the sanitary network. She said of the pipes, “their reduced diameter creates blockages quite frequently and the supply network is inadequate.” She added, “the telecommunications network is also non-existent.” The works, which are out to tender, will include installing a telephone network, wiring, street lighting and street furniture. Ms Fernandez said residents had been asking for the improvements for some time and that the street will join many others which have already been upgraded in the town.
difficult to supervise their children in July and August; giving children a break from their normal routine; and ensuring children who don’t normally play sports have a go at different activities which may give them a passion for sports.” Activities will include swimming, soccer, basketball, handball, and athletics. Various trips to the beach, parks or the town’s areas of interest will also take place.
Virgin Mary still immaculate An ICON of the Virgin Mary, which was the target of a recent church bombing on the Costa del Sol, has taken pride of place at a religious event last Saturday. The statue had been hit by a Molotov cocktail thrown by a 44-year-old man from Torre del Mar in the Virgen de los Desemparados Church in Velez Malaga. The man, who is thought to be mentally ill, threw the homemade explosive in the middle of the afternoon. The device failed to detonate though, instead spilling fuel on the icon’s robes. National Police officers located the alleged assailant after taking witness statements and sifting through CCTV images of the incident. On raiding the man’s house, they found two other similar devices and arrested him. The man has now been charged with property damage and religious hatred but has refused to make a statement to police. The arresting officers confiscated four computers, two electronic tablets, an lsquopen drive, mobile phone and clothing which were apparently worn in the attack. The man has now been sent for psychiatric evaluation. Priests from the church are now meeting to consider ways to prevent any similar incidents with CCTV and other security measures. Another organisation, Pasion Youth is now raising money to buy the icon a new petticoat.
Anyone for tea? FURENGIROLA’S Council is putting on a free course, teaching English specifically for those looking for a job in hospitality from 22 May to 2 June. Entrants for the workshop, which has 15 places, must be resident of Fuengirola, be enrolled in the town’s employment programmed and preferably be unemployed. Carmen Diaz, Councillor for Promotion and Local Development, said, “we continuously offer this type of training to locals so we can improve employment and skills.” She added, “hospitality is one of the most demanding fields and requires people with specific qualifications.” The course will be taught over 50 hours, Monday to Friday and will involve classes on social skills, money, transport, cultural differences and customer service.

Cash incentive for road works
Traffic on Avenida Juan Carlos I often grinds to a halt
by Sally Underwood ESTEPONA’S Council is offering companies €362,000 to remodel and improve the road layout on Avenida Juan Carlos I. A total of 38 companies have submitted an offer for the works, which
involves the creating a roundabout to eliminate the existing traffic lights, as well as renovating all street furniture and signs. The council hope the project will speed up traffic, which is currently slowed by the high number of vehicles passing through traffic lights.
They believe a roundabout will improve traffic and safety for both pedestrians and drivers in one of the town’s most important roads. While works are ongoing, the council also plan to renew the rainwater network, water supply and lighting, as well as replacing wiring.
Culture vulture MIJAS has celebrated International Museum Day with live music performances at the town’s museum yesterday. Attendees were delighted by a classical guitar and violin concert at the free event. Fuensanta Lima, the town’s Councillor for Culture, explained, "we want to open the doors of our museums for a day and invite all residents to participate and in and enjoy our heritage.” She added, "we are fortunate to have a great history and a wealth of culture, which is often unknown by the people of Mijas.” Music group D'Enbosa Duo, formed by guitarist Lidia Moreno and violinist Maria Jose Pareja, both music teachers, performed. Other events around the town included exhibitions at the Mijas CAC, Max Carromato and the Torre de la Cala. The initiatives, which were all free, sought to raise the profile of the area’s culture.

Car-tastrophe! Handbrake fail claims car. by Staff Reporter A PARKED 4x4 has met its end in the peaceful village of Frigiliana when its handbrake gave way at around noon, sending the vehicle hurtling through railings and tumbling two metres over a wall onto a neighbouring restaurant. As luck would have it, the eatery’s last customers had left only moments earlier, potentially saving serious injury. The owner of the restaurant, which is located on Plaza Doña Ampara Guerrero, said "this will be anecdote, but it could have ruined many lives.” He explained he came out and “saw the car smashed in. I didn’t know what had happened; you’re in shock.” He added that eight of his 16 tables were wrecked in the smash but that further damage was only prevented because "the street is sloped and ends in a new railing, which cushioned the blow and therefore only bowed." He explained that although the railing and tables have now been replaced, “you can still see what happened.” The owner of a local hotel, who witnessed the accident, said, "we
heard a rumble and saw a vehicle that was balancing on its bonnet. People thought it would carry on going." The car’s owner, who was doing work to his house in the mountain village of Frigiliana on the Costa del Sol, was alerted and quickly came to the scene. A special crane had to be dispatched to remove the wrecked vehicle and debris and there were power and telephone outages for two hours. Alejandro Herrero, Frigiliana’s Mayor, commented it was a “real miracle” no passers-by were injured, saying, “luckily we don’t have any injuries to report, which is the main thing. The rest can be fixed.” Several photos of the smash have since circulated on social media.

FOUR men were surprised by police as they attempted to break into a mobile phone shop in popular Costa del Sol resort, Torrox Costa, in the early hours of the morning. The thieves, who are aged between 18 and 21-years-old, were foiled by the shop’s owner who was keeping guard over night following similar recent robberies. The man called the Local Police and Guardia Civil, who arrived at 2.20am, quickly catching the alleged thieves. The men, three of whom are Spanish and one Moroccan, were found to have balaclavas, screwdrivers, baseball bat and bolt cutters on them. They are now in the custody of Torrox’s Guardia Civil, who have praised “citizen collaboration” for thwarting the alleged robbers.

Ian Brady, ‘Moors murderer’, dies aged 79 One of Britain's most notorious killers, ‘Moors murderer’ Ian Brady, who murdered five children with his lover and accomplice Myra Hindley during a sadistic two-year reign of terror in the 1960s died on Monday. by Tahnee Wright Brady and Hindley were jailed for life in 1966 for abducting, torturing, sexually abusing and then murdering the children before burying their young victims on the bleak Saddleworth Moor near the northern city of Manchester. Brady died at Ashworth secure hospital in Liverpool, where he has been housed since 1985 after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, aged 79. ‘We can confirm a 79-year-old patient in long-term care at Ashworth High Secure Hospital has died after becoming physically unwell,’ a spokesman for the hospital said. For many of his last years, Brady had been on intermittent hunger strike and staff at Ashworth fed him via a tube through the nose on the grounds he was insane and incapable of deciding to end his own life.In 2013, Brady asked to be moved to a Scottish prison so he could not be force fed, as he could be in hospital, and where he could be allowed to die if he wishes. His request was rejected in a Mental Health Tribunal as it was ruled necessary in his interests and for the safety of others that he remain at Ashworth. In February, he was refused permission to launch a High Court fight to have the lawyer of his choice representing him at a tribunal where the decision would be reviewed.
The sadistic nature of the Moors Murderers' killings made them among the most despised figures in Britain. Brady was found guilty of snatching and killing 12-yearold John Kilbride, Edward Evans, 17, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, while Hindley was convicted of murdering Downey and Evans and shielding her lover in the third case. In the 1980s, the couple admitted abducting and murdering 16-year-old Pauline Reade on her way to a Manchester disco in 1963 and killing Keith Bennett, 12, in 1964. They were finally caught when Hindley's brother-inlaw tipped off police. Although their crimes took place 40 years ago, the revulsion felt by Britons and the hatred directed at them by the tabloid press hardly diminished. Hindley was Britain's longest serving female prisoner when she died in 2002 after 36 years in jail.Successive UK governments had refused to release her despite her claims she had reformed and was driven to commit the murders by the psychopathic Brady. He insisted she was as much to blame. He had tried to court favour by helping police to find the missing body of Bennett. But despite exhaustive searches, his body has never been found. When she was cremated, a banner which read "Burn in hell" was left outside the building. Brady escaped the hangman's noose as the death penalty was abolished just months earlier and was handed three life sentences.
Bed-ridden British woman travels to Spain for life-saving surgery A young woman from Northumberland, who has to lie down flat all the time, has flown to Spain for life-saving surgery. Melanie Hartshorn, who is 27, needs an operation which will fuse the base of her skull to her spine, to prevent her from suffering fatal brain damage. A neurosurgeon in Barcelona has agreed to take on Melanie's case at a cost of £80,000. ‘It's been a bit of a nightmare because we've had to organise medical flights with a nurse and a doctor and to take all my equipment over and all my medication and that has cost a lot more money than expected so we still have to raise quite a lot of money to cover the cost of the flights for the flights home as well.’ ‘I'm nervous but grateful and I am relieved that it is finally happening and that we have the date now and we're hoping to be away for about 5 weeks and then hopefully come home.’ ‘It's like a long recovery from the surgery because it is a big operation so we just have to see how it goes.’ Melanie suffers from a rare genetic condition called EhlersDanlos Syndrome. It means her joints dislocate and can't hold her body together. As a result, she is completely bed-bound as the risk of irreversible damage from even minor movements is very high. The surgery is a risky procedure that will involve fusing the base of Mel's skull to her spine, to prevent irreversible fatal brain damage.

Investigators publish plane crash details by Sally Underwood A plane which crashed in the Costa del Sol’s Sierra Tejeda two weeks ago, killing the three Germans onboard, collided “head-on” with the mountain, according to a report published by investigators. The three were in the penultimate stage of an air rally from Perpignon to Morocco when they lost contact with air traffic control over Nerja. The report states the plane was just ten minutes from its destination of Granada when it travelled “off-course”, in heavy fog. Air traffic workers contacted their counterparts at Granada airport to check whether the plane had arrived but quickly despatched rescue workers when they found it had not. Workers eventually found the wreckage in the Los Pradillos area, at around 1,718 metres above sea level, a relatively inaccessible area, necessitating the use of Guardia Civil helicopters normally used to extinguish forest fires. Investigators say the impact of the smash “scattered” the plane across the mountain. The crash is just one of a series of plane accidents to hit the Costa del Sol. Last week, a plane belonging to a pilot school smashed through a fence at the end of a runway in Velez Malaga, almost ending up in a riverbed. The plane, which was carrying three people onboard, was travelling from Malaga to San Javier in Murcia when it made a stop at El Trapiche airfield in Velez Malaga. For reasons as
yet unclear, the plane did not stop on the runway after landing, instead hurtling through a fence. Those on board were unharmed although the plane suf-
fered damage. Two others were also killed on January 19 this year after their plans crashed after take-off in Velez Malaga and exploded in an avocado farm.

Worker injured in blast A 32-YEAR-OLD hotel worker has suffered second-degree burns after a combustion burner he was handling exploded. For reasons yet unknown, the tank blew up as he worked on it, spilling burning liquid down his left arm and torso. National Police, firemen and the Public Sanitary Emergency Services quickly arrived at the scene and transferred the man to the Malaga Regional Hospital. The man is said to be in a stable condition but has received “serious burns”, pain, redness, swelling and blisters to ten per cent of his body.

14 arrested over burger meat fraud Spanish police have arrested and charged 14 people with fraud and breaching consumer rights, following accusations that a Spanish meat company has been selling low-quality beef burgers with incorrect labelling. Some burgers were found with under 25 per cent beef content according to the authorities. The meat processing plant, based in Burgos, labelled the products as containing a certain percentage of beef. In reality, the products had less beef content than was claimed, with pork, bread, fats or soy substituted instead, according to the Guardia Civil. Evidence going back at least to 2002 was acquired by authorities that suggests quick-frozen beef products were being made by the company that sometimes contained under 25% actual beef. The Guardia Civil described the case as a major example of food fraud on a national level. The police investigation into the fraud began in December 2015, when the Guardia Civil ‘became aware’ of potentially fraudulent activity on the part of the company, whose name has not been disclosed. As part of the investigation, 3,000 documents were examined by authorities and meat samples from multiple facilities of the company in question were analysed in laboratories. The results of these tests showed that, contrary to labels showing beef as the main ingredient, a high percentage of burgers contained substitute ingredients. The firm at the centre of the matter reportedly produces ‘white-label’ goods for other firms – for example, supermarkets, to distribute under their own branding. The police stated: ‘The scope of marketing appears to be very high as the company manufactured white-label products that were distributed in the domestic market.’ The nature of the processed products (hamburgers, meatballs and so on) prevented the discovery of the deception prior to the operation, as analysis in a specialized laboratory would be needed to identify the fraud, the Guardia Civil said in a statement. Considerable differences in price for beef and prices for the substituted materials purportedly gave an ‘important economic benefit’ to the company in question.
Singaporean cargo ship captain rescued from sea near Spain The captain of a large Singaporean cargo ship was found drifting at sea off the coast of southern Spain clinging to a life buoy in a ‘very serious state,’ police said Tuesday.
by Tahnee Wright Passers-by in the port of Tarifa told officers Monday they had spotted a man in visibly poor condition drifting at sea in high winds and strong waves, according to a police statement.Police rescued him and emergency services rushed him to hospital. Wearing only a white shirt, the man was ‘gripping a rigid life buoy fitted with a beacon,’ police
said.‘He presented signs of extreme hypothermia, bloated lips, face and eyes, and swollen eyelids due to exposure to the sun and salty water,’ indicating he had been adrift for several hours, according to the police. They added the man also had bruises. The Spanish Interior Ministry praised the rescue on Twitter, describing the man's state as ‘very serious.’ The ship, which according to specia-
lised sites is a vehicle transport vessel, had alerted Spanish rescue services that a man ‘may have fallen overboard’, that morning, police said. The vessel, named ‘Morning Ninni’ was sailing close to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the African coast. Spanish authorities later confirmed that the rescued man was indeed the ship's captain. He remains in serious condition, according to the police.
Six tonnes of Colombian cocaine seized Spanish authorities co-operated with Ecuadorean police to intercept a ship that was bringing more than six tonnes of cocaine into the country, officials said on Monday. In a separate drug seizure announced on Monday, Spanish police said they stopped a ship carrying 2.8 tonnes of cocaine in a joint operation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Britain's National Crime Agency and police in neighbouring Portugal. Ecuadorean agents boarded a freighter when it was almost three nautical miles off the coast of Ecuador's Santa Elena province, Spain's Interior Ministry said in a statement. The ship was loaded with Colombian cocaine in the Pacific and planned to travel through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic to Europe, the statement said. The shipment was believed to have been organised by a drug-trafficking ring in north-eastern Galicia.Ecuadorean police found 176 bags of cocaine concealed in the cargo and arrested the 20 men on the ship. One of them was a Spaniard allegedly belonging to the Galician ring. Four others were arrested in Spain. Meanwhile, a Venezuela-flagged ship was intercepted by Spanish special operations police and customs agents at sea on May 4 and was towed to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. The seven crew members were arrested. The police operation began after Spain found out in January that a South American ring with links in Spain was organising a large shipment. That information was corroborated by intelligence also gathered by the U.S., Britain and Portugal, the statement said. Large seizures of cocaine and cannabis aren't uncommon in Iberia, which is seen as a drug gateway to Europe. Spanish police captured almost nine tonnes of cocaine from four vessels in 2015 and 2016 and arrested 80 people, the police statement said.

Malaga to Barcelona train derails by Staff Reporter A high-speed AVE train derailed on Friday morning leaving around 400 passengers stranded for almost five hours. The train bound for Barcelona left Málaga at 08.40 and then Sevilla 10 minutes later, left the track following damage to a wheel located under carriage number eight. The incident took place between Venta la Inés (Córdoba province) and Brazatortas (Ciudad Real province). Nobody was hurt, but with the track in one direction blocked whilst engineers from both ADIF and RENFE worked on the broken-down train, delays were inevitable as only one direction was in use. Passengers had to wait for a replacement train to arrive so they could carry on their journey at 13.40, although they were more than well looked after with the offer of complimentary refreshments to all those affected. RENFE says they will be given a full refund on their tickets in accordance with the company’s Voluntary Punctuality Commitment, put in place in response to European Union directives concerning improved train performances. Usually, and in accordance with the EU rules, passengers can apply for a refund up to three months after their journey.
Girl gravely injured following balcony fall
A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl is said to be in a serious condition in intensive care after falling 10 metres from a balcony in the Costa del Sol’s Rincon de la Victoria. The child, who was apparently playing with a friend when she went over, is on a ventilator and being treated at the Materno Infantil hospital in Malaga. Neighbours say they alerted emergency services after hearing the girl’s father shout “my girl, my girl.” They then saw her lying on the ground, bleeding from her mouth and nose. She is thought to have regained consciousness before being transferred to hospital. Police are now investigating the events leading up to her fall but believe it was an accident.

The walking dead A 47-YEAR-OLD man has died on a road on the Costa del Sol, after apparently falling and hitting his head. Police found the man on Velez Malaga’s Camino de la Aretilla after two residents reported hearing a “snoring” noise. Officers shot to the scene at around 11 pm and found the deceased lying face down and breathing with difficulty. They quickly called for medical help, but the man had stopped breathing before paramedics arrived, and he was declared dead at the scene. The National Police are now waiting for the results of an autopsy but say all signs suggest he fell and hit his head on a rock.
Horror crash A 42-YEAR-OLD motorcyclist has been killed in an accident on Benalmadena’s Avenida del Sol. The incident was reported at around 4.45am on the old N-340 road. Police and paramedics dashed to the accident but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘I didn’t hit him’
AN 85-YEAROLD woman accused of murdering her cancer-addled husband with a crutch on the Costa del Sol, has told a jury she does not remember attacking him.
A grisly death on the Costa del Sol Photo courtesy of Wikipedia
by Sally Underwood The alleged killer is on trial for murder after her husband was found dead from a head wound in their home in Rincon de la Victoria in July 2015. Investigators initially believed the woman’s tale that her husband had fallen, but became suspicious when they found
blood stains on his own crutch. Prosecutors believe the woman, whose husband had lung cancer, waited until family visitors had left and then attacked him. They claim she waited until the man was resting on a sofa, and, "unexpectedly, taking advantage of his helplessness, which prevented any effective defence, bludgeoned him
with 14 blows from one of his crutches.” Questioned by lawyers, the woman claims she now cannot remember the incident, suggesting burglars may have entered the property and attacked her husband but maintaining, “I did not hit him with a crutch.” If convicted, the woman faces life in prison.
Rescued couple highlight sexual persecution JIMENA RICO and Shaza Ismail, a young couple who were imprisoned in Turkey after
fleeing homophobic oppression in Dubai, have been received by Albert Rivera, leader of the political party, Ciudadanos, to discuss women’s equality.
The girls say they spoke with the senior politician as a “first step” towards highlighting
the “struggle” for equality amongst the LGBT community “in many countries”.
The women, who are 28 and 22, became embroiled in an internationally-covered ordeal
after flying to Dubai to visit Shaza’s mother, who was supposedly sick. Once there, how-
ever, it became clear Miss Ismail’s Egyptian father wanted her to face trial for her sexuality, which is punishable by death in Dubai.
The couple fled to Georgia, where the man ambushed them and tore up their travel
documents. Police intervened and took the girls to the Turkish border, where they crossed
over. Turkish police soon intercepted them though, and imprisoned them on suspicion of terrorism without access to legal advice or phones.
The Spanish Government became involved when Ms Rico’s family reported her missing
after receiving voicemail saying she feared for her life. The authorities tracked the girls to a prison in Istanbul and quickly secured their release.
The couple, who say they are “shattered” by their experience, are now engaged, plan-
ning on getting a dog, and have both been offered positions at the Funky Buddha Beach, a club in Marbella.
They have continued to share details of their ordeal, however, which they say involved
being “spat at” and questioned about their sex-life by police in Turkey. The couple say they now want to highlight persecution of homosexuality.

A word to the wise when visiting Gibraltar Part One by John Smith ONE of the great things about living in the Costa del Sol is the wide range of towns and attractions to visit. Gibraltar has been a magnet to visitors for years and if you haven’t been there, then a day trip is certainly worthwhile for a combination of shopping and sightseeing. Many tour operators organise daily coach trips to the Rock and equally plenty of people are happy to enjoy the drive as it is only 140 kilometres from Malaga and obviously less from other points on the coast. Assuming you decide to drive, there is some form of motorway either paid or free almost all of the way passing through Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, La Cala de Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro, Estepona, Casares Costa, Manilva, Duquesa, Guadiaro, and San Roque before diverting to La Linea de la Concepcion. Once one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Europe, it’s now an easy drive with plenty of places to stop en route unless you travel on the AP7 but even then, that road merges with the A7 at various points. When you arrive at La Linea, you have two basic options, either park in the large modern car park by the border and walk over or follow the easy to understand directions to take your car across the border. Whatever you do, make sure that you have your passport or EU id card and papers showing ownership and insurance for the car. If you are approached by anyone asking you to purchase an entry permit into Gibraltar, ignore them as they local con artists. Be prepared for a queue as the main road in Gibraltar, Winston Churchill Avenue traverses the airport runway and is closed for flight departures and arrivals, although in time a tunnel under the runway is planned. The runway is often busy as it caters for commercial flights (up to 16 arrivals and departures on certain days), private jets and the RAF so tailbacks are not uncommon and if you arrive early in the morning you could be caught up in rush hour traffic as there are 10,000 Spanish residents working on the Rock. You will need to have your id ready to show the Spanish National Police and then the Gibraltar immigration officers and after passing through the Gibraltar customs check, you are on your way.
Entering Gibraltar - choose the correct lane Photo Credit: Paul Wikimedia flickr
If you have parked on the La Linea side then you can catch a taxi or bus into the centre of Gibraltar, with the majority of shops lining each side of Main Street. Just before the runway is one of Gibraltar’s two main supermarkets, Eroski which actually stock a large selection of Waitrose products as well as a full range of Spanish products as well. Travelling across the runway, you will find a number of petrol stations, all of which sell both diesel and
petrol at a saving of around 30c per litre on Spanish prices so it is well worth filling up before you leave. You can pay in pounds sterling or euros and most shops offer a sensible exchange rate although they often give change in sterling even if euros are tendered. In the next article, we will look at the other main supermarket, Morrisons and journey to Main Street and other places of interest.
Shop ‘til you drop
Councillor Wichmann explains the scheme
FUENGIROLA’S Council has extended the deadline for entering its competition Prizes for Buying in Fuengirola until 26 May. A lucky winner will receive €2000 buying collecting stamps when they shop in any one of 35 participating shops in the town. Participants will be entered into a prize draw once they have spent over €10 in six shops. Councillor Ricardo Von Wichmann explained, "Monday, May 15, was the deadline for submitting stamps… but last week, both traders and buyers asked us to extend the competition.” He added, “this way, those who still lack a couple of stamps will still be able to enter the prize draw, which will see a single winner receive €2000, made up of clothing, accessories, jewellery, beauty vouchers and a total of 19 gift cards, worth a minimum of €50 each.” He explained, "the objectives of the initiative are to reward purchases in local shops, as well as to promote and encourage Fuengirola’s trade in a fun and attractive way.”

Estepona Murals competition IT has now been revealed that 70 artists have presented concepts and designs for the International Murals Competition in Estepona.

FUENGIROLA’S Council has created an advisory service for the town’s growing number of young athletes, helping them balance training with their studies. The council believe too many young locals are abandoning their sporting careers as they find it too difficult to create time to train on top of school and personal commitments. The project, which is an innovation for the Costa del Sol, will see advisors liaise with an athlete’s family and teachers to create a schedule which allows them to flourish in all areas. Pedro Cuevas, the town’s Councillor for Sports, explained, "A few days we recruited for the role and the counselling service has now started. We decided to hire, Pablo Mira, one of the most outstanding elite athletes of our town for the role.” Cristina Iñurreta, an elite swimmer from Fuengirola, expressed approval joy of the scheme, commenting, "those of us in the sporting world know how difficult it is to get ahead as an athlete. Competitors, especially in childhood and youth, when they are trying to carve out a future, need to be able to divide up their time between sport, which requires many hours of training, preparation and competitions, with their studies.” She added, “there are loads of athletes with a bright future who leave their sport because they have to choose between work and study or training.”
One of the incredible existing murals Photo Credit: Ayuntamiento de Estepona
by John Smith The specially appointed jury will select 10 of the works which will be produced simultaneously on the walls of different buildings in the town during July. The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, is delighted by the interest that this competition, organised by the council and supported by La Caixa has aroused. Although the bulk of proposals have been received from Spanish artists, there have also been design concepts
submitted by artists from Argentina, Cuba, France, Italy, Germany and Poland all wanting to win the €10,000 first prize but also to enjoy the publicity that accompanies the competition. The 10 finalists will paint their murals in Estepona between July 10 and 20 and visitors and residents will have the opportunity to watch their creative processes. Once completed, these 10 paintings will bring the total in the town to nearly 50 and as the town itself is modernised and rejuvenated, this unusual project will become a greater tourist attraction

in its own right. Local and national artists have been a great help in producing the murals already existing in the town and one particular piece needs to be mentioned as it was created by inmates of the prison in Alhaurin de la Torre. This artistic project complements the town mission to become known as 'Estepona Jardín de la Costa de Sol', (Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol) thanks to the beautification and renovation of the urban area, which has already seen 91 streets redesigned to highlight atypical Andalucian style.
RTN Testimonials I picked up a copy of the RTN newspaper today and was very surprised with it. Bright, eye catching, but to be honest I would not expect anything different from Steven and Michel the new owners and Ben of course their son who is in charge of this new paper. I have seen in my 12 years in Spain many magazines and papers come and go, the difference is the owners treat everyone as a family member, staff, advertisers and general public, this is why they are good at what they both do and me and my wife can vouch for this in the short time we have had the pleasure to advertise with them and we will certainly continue to do so in the future. We wish you the best in this new venture... LOL Bob & Linda Hackshaw owners of Aico Restaurants Group

One woman’s stand against breast cancer A MOTHER and grandmother from Durham has produced 350 knitted knockers this year alone and now supplies them to North Africa. by John Smith After spending many years working as a lecturer, Maria Bailey and her husband moved to Spain in 2004 to relax and enjoy a quiet life. She loved the Spanish way of life and immediately spent time learning Spanish and was so successful that she was employed by the college which she attended to teach English to Spanish students. Much as they both loved their time in Spain, the couple felt they were missing out on seeing their three children bring up their three grandchildren and Maria also experienced some guilt about leaving her elderly parents behind. Breast Cancer After three years they decided to return to England and it was there, thanks to regular tests that she discovered that she was suffering the early stages of breast cancer but after treatment including surgery and chemotherapy she bounced back and although under a five year regime of medication is able to live a normal life. Her mother had also suffered the same but being of an older, perhaps more private generation, did all that she could to keep her affliction confidential even from the rest of the family. Maria is made of different stuff and with her lecturer’s mind kept herself informed of what had happened and why but needed some way of transferring that information to other women to try to help them. Return to Spain She found that she was missing the sounds and tastes of Spain whilst her husband was missing the sun, so being a little older and having come through the illness they decided to return to Spain, buying a property overlooking the Benalmadena Costa three years ago whilst keeping a property near the family in the UK. Just a year ago, she was glancing through the pages of a newspaper when she learned about a small organisation called Knitted Knockers which had been formed in the village of Mollina in Malaga Province and she knew that she had found her vocation. One of the problems that women who suffer mastectomies face is the loss of one or both breasts and how to cope with day to day activities so that the loss is not too obvious. The Spanish health system will supply silicon options which can be heavy and uncomfortable in the heat whilst knitted knockers are made from 100 per cent cotton which is light, comfortable and non-allergenic. Knitted Knockers Her first move therefore was to contact Maggie Stevenson in Mollina and to get involved by finding funds and volunteers to allow for more knockers to be produced. Her very first sponsor was her 94-year-old father and then she managed to obtain sponsorship from the La Cala Lions as well as Costa Women for a Costa branch. Now in just a year, she has attracted between 30 and 40 volunteers to get knitting and members of the group personally deliver between two and four knockers to each person who applies for them (on the basis one to wear and one to wash) free of charge.
Maria on the left with supporter Fia Ensgard
Help and advice The concept of delivery is to ensure that they can also offer advice and comfort to any woman who needs to talk about the illness and the after effects. They have now also discovered a way to produce water resistant knitted knockers for swimsuit wear and some of the ladies who have received them say that this the first time that they have been able to go swimming in years. Maria says that she is busier than she has ever been and so successful has she been in recruiting such a large work force, that she has been asked to send 70 knockers to Algeria and Morocco which she was delighted to do, although
she had some difficulty in completing the customs form at the local post office until she explained and the clerk there said that her mother had also lost a breast. Costa Women According to Maria she can’t thank Ali Meehan and Costa Women enough for all of the support they have given the group which not only produces these helpful accessories but is determined to encourage all women, expatriate and Spanish to make sure that they have annual check-ups to catch the disease at its earliest stages. Whose victory day? by
Michael Walsh
keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently criticised the re-writing of history. Timely, for Victory Day, a masterpiece of fairy-tale history was set to take place two weeks later on May 9. I suggest that Finland declares March 13 Victory Day. On that day in 1940, this sparsely peopled nation repelled and routed Stalin’s invading Red Army. Finnish defence forces, mostly farmers and foresters, were outnumbered 3/1 in troops, 30/1 aircraft, 100/1 tanks. Yet, within 12 weeks the badly mauled Red Army retreated and Stalin capitulated. Russians might consider March 12 for revelry. On that day in 1940 U.S President Roosevelt signed the Lend Lease Act. Inked 10 months before America’s entry into the war the Act guaranteed the USSR unlimited resources in support of Soviet territorial expansionism. Given such assurances, Joe Stalin one year later, placed 4.5 million Red Army troops on Europe’s borders; the invasion and occupation of which was scheduled for July 1941. Predictably, Germany took Napoleon’s advice: ‘he who hits first hits twice’. On June 22, 1941, Germany pre-emptively struck. Within 12 weeks the Red Army was routed and swept back to the gates of Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad. An irony Russians prefer not to mention is that Soviet General Andrei Vlasov, eulogised for his defence of Moscow, later defected to the Reich taking his armies with him. When Victory Day is celebrated whose victory is it? Recognition ought to go to U.S President Roosevelt and Britain’s wartime premier Winston Churchill. Such was the volume of aid sent to the near defeated USSR that Soviet dictator Joe Stalin and Marshal Georgy Zhukov gave credit where credit was due. Chief of Soviet General Staff Marshal Georgy K.
Zhukov, in his memoirs, says ‘U.S aid to the Soviet Union during World War II was crucial to the victory over Nazi Germany.’ As reported in the Los Angeles Times (Oct 20, 1987) Josef Stalin wrote to Roosevelt: “We would have been in a difficult position without American gunpowder, we could not have produced the quantities of ammunition we needed. “Without U.S Studebakers we would have had

nothing with which to pull our artillery. They largely provided our transport at the front, producing steels, necessary for the most diverse needs of war, also involved certain U.S supplies.”Albert L. Weeks in his Russia’s Life-Saver: Lend-Lease Aid to the USSR: “The victory over Nazi Germany was achieved through the economic power of the United States who, for reasons that defy logic, made the ultimate sacrifice to keep in power a regime as brutal as their Nazi enemy.”
I know my plaice by

I love fish and chips, but it’s never as good as the old fashioned grub from my boyhood days when lard was used in the frying. Pure poison we are now told, but the smell from the chip shop was exquisite and the taste of the food even more so. Life turns on a sixpence my dad used to say and it’s true, because one of the most significant moments of my life occurred in our local chippie on the council estate where we lived. It was a Friday night, so there was a long queue when I arrived and as it snaked its way towards the order counter, I had time to peruse the tasty items on offer in the glass fronted cabinet. Do I fancy a piece of haddock I thought, or perhaps a spam fritter or savaloy. But savaloys weren’t really my thing. No batter for a start. What about one of those nice pies keeping warm in the rotisserie. But then I saw a solitary piece of fish away from the cod and haddock and I made up my mind. Tonight I will have plaice, more expensive but what the heck. I just hoped nobody else would buy it. I was next in line when I caught sight of the wall calendar which depicted a pretty scene of pastel houses tumbling over themselves surrounding a small harbour. I left the queue to look at this closely. It was stunning and I could almost see myself in the picture leaning on the stone wall gazing out over the bobbing fishing boats. “What can I do you for mate?” I vaguely heard the assistant call out. But I was transfixed and could not tear my eyes away from the scene. ‘Polperro’ it said below the picture and I knew with absolute certainty, that’s where I wanted to live. I hadn’t noticed that the bloke behind me had been served in my absence, but luckily the kind lady behind beckoned me forward to make my order. “Plaice and chips please” I said cheerfully and was suddenly ravenous for that expensive piece of fish. My future stars had just changed. “Sorry, that gentleman had the last one” said the assistant. Damn, it looked like it was a battered sausage after all. But six months later I was living in beautiful Cornwall and there were no regrets about losing my plaice.

In terms of global investment trends in commercial property, the latest results point to Spain seeing the sharpest quarterly improvement in market conditions.
Indeed, respondents reported a robust rise in investment enquiries during Q1 and are now more confident of seeing further near term capital value growth than at any other point since 2008 (net balance of +62%). When broken down, projections in Madrid are slightly stronger than the national average. Elsewhere, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Ireland all retained strong Investment Sentiment Index readings. In each case, growth in demand is outstripping that of supply (in net balance terms), producing solid expectations for capital value growth. Notwithstanding this, across Prague, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin, perceptions are rising that market conditions may be close to peaking. Looking at market sentiment Post-Brexit, this quarter,
the highest proportion of respondents across Dublin and Amsterdam reported seeing enquiries for space from businesses looking to relocate some part of their business away from the UK (relative to all other areas). Outside of Europe, Sydney and Auckland also show strong positive momentum in tenant demand in 2017. Also news flow is gradually beginning to improve in Russia and Brazil, following a difficult three years in which both economies have grappled with deep recessions, In Russia, occupier demand picked-up for the first time since 2013, pushing rental projections modestly higher as a result. 40% of respondents are now of the opinion the market has started to recover in Russia. On the other hand, feedback from respondents still remains somewhat cautious in parts of Asia and the Middle East and in the US market, investment enquiries were reportedly flat
over the period, marking the first quarter since 2010 in which demand has failed to rise. “Sentiment remains particularly upbeat in several European markets according to the latest results of the RICS Global Commercial Property Monitor. On the occupier side, cities such as Madrid, Budapest, Dublin, Munich, Berlin and Lisbon continue to exhibit amongst the strongest momentum worldwide. Likewise, investment market confidence also remains buoyant on the continent, as 9 of the top 10 global Investment Sentiment Index readings were posted by European cities. This period of relative outperformance has coincided with economic indicators generally surprising on the upside across the EU, with the economy now looking set to see solid expansion in 2017. - RICS Chief Economist Simon Rubinsohn

Colour your own world Whether you realize it or not, the colours you select for your home and your personal belongings tell a lot about your personality. In fact, according to a recent survey by PPG Industries (PPG), 58% of 2.500 consumers surveyed agree that colours selected for their home, car and consumer products — such as appliances and electronics — reflect their personality and style all or most of the time. In addition, 70% of those surveyed agreed colour selection is important when purchasing paint for their home. So, how do these colour preferences come about? PPG, a global leader in paint and colour, knows that consumers’ colour preferences aren’t random. One’s desire for certain colours can be quite personal, as each colour evokes different emotions based on our unique experiences, current events, memories and style preferences. By determining the paint colour schemes that positively reflect your personality, you can identify your unique style and ultimately add a more personal touch to your home decor. Pulling inspiration from your wardrobe is a great way to determine your colour preferences. Evaluating what clothing items are your go-to staples will help inform you of the colours and styles you find most appealing. Do you live in dark denim? Paint a rich navy accent wall in your dining room. Do you love your little black dress? A front door painted Black makes a stunning first impression. Your favourite holiday location can also serve as a muse in realising your design sense. If thoughts of weekends away or
holidays abroad bring warm memories, then deep, earthy tones will likely evoke nostalgia in reminiscing about your favourite spot. If you are a peaceful person that craves calmness, blues may be your go-to hue, all perfect for creating a tranquil atmosphere to make you feel at ease. By incorporating minimalist and modern decor elements, you can further create a sense of serenity and clarity within your space. Do you consider yourself charming and carefree? Then you may describe your home decor as pretty in pink. A wonderful mix of pink, red and beige paint colours that create dreamy ambiances and exude elegance provide the perfect muted backdrop for a bathroom or entryway. Consider adding a farmhouse feel to the space with distressed wood elements to embrace country charm and create a modern rustic look. For spirited extroverts, plum, cherry and purple hues may adorn your space; a paint colour collection that provides majestic shades that radiate passion and sophistication. Show off your bold nature by adding a touch of glam with metallic elements to infuse drama into the space. You can discover exactly which colour collection best suits your style. In examining the colour schemes that are most attractive to you, the decor elements that make you feel at home, and the sentiments that you value most, among other qualifiers, you will determine which best represents your decor preferences and ultimately which colours to incorporate into your home to best express your unique personality.

Scandi cool for Spring
Scandinavian 'cool' are definitely the buzz words at the moment. From books to TV, music to food, fashion to interiors our Northern neighbours are considered to be at the cutting edge of every genre. As for our homes, well we have been well aware of Scandinavian design ever since a certain Swedish furniture giant landed on our shores thirty odd years ago. Many a home in the UK and here in Spain has had an IKEA makeover, but so often our bedroom is the last place that gets a 'Scandi' look. We all know a good night’s sleep can do wonders for our mood and general health - so creating a relaxing bedroom is vital. Simplicity and cosiness is the Nordic answer to creating a tranquil bedroom in which to get your full forty winks. It’s important to create a space you enjoy spending time in to ensure you wake up feeling refreshed. Small changes can make a huge difference. Here are our top tips for updating your bedroom this spring. CLEAR THE CLUTTER A tidy space equals a tidy mind, allowing you to relax and
feel at ease. Put effort into finding the perfect storage solution to keep your bedroom clutter free. TACTILE TEXTILES Winter in the northern hemisphere is usually long and dark. The bedroom should be a sanctuary of comfort, and textured textiles are the perfect remedy for a bland and boring bedroom. DIM ALL THE LIGHTS Lighting is a great way to add a sense of tranquility and calm to your bedroom. The soft glow of flickering candles or a dim bedside lamp prepares your mind and body to relax. Turning the lights down an hour before bed tells your brain to shift into sleep/relaxation mode. Generating the right ambience in the bedroom is key for a good night’s rest. Good blinds are also essential as total darkness during the night will help you achieve a deep, uninterrupted sleep. PURIFY THE AIR Clean sleeping simply means getting 7-8 hours of good
quality, uninterrupted sleep a night. House plants and clean air can help contribute to this. Plants help purify the air while you sleep, by turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. Plants like jasmine and lavender give off a beautiful natural scent which helps create a soothing ambience. CHOOSE THE PERFECT COLOUR Blue can be calming and promote serenity for some, but be cold and unfriendly to others. Green hues are famous for creating a restful space, and it’s usually a safe bet when deciding on a new bedroom colour. Bright yellows are stimulating, meaning they are less appropriate when creating a serene ambiance. SOOTHING SCENTS There are many different methods people use to help them drift off at night. One of the latest trends are scented pillow sprays. The aromatic blends - usually of lavender and camomile - can help calm a busy mind and sooth you to sleep.

3 reasons why gardening is the therapy for you It’s time to whip out your gardening gloves because not only are digging and weeding great exercise, a good stint of gardening boosts mental health, too. Recent research carried out by Harvard University found that people living in an area rich in vegetation have improved physical and mental health. Professor Tim Lang, Centre for Food Policy at City University London, says it's widely recognised that regular contact with plants, animals and the natural environment can improve our physical health and mental wellbeing. When we grow food and flowers, we're engaging with the natural world at a pace that provides a welcome antidote to the stresses of modern life. GPs in London have already started to prescribe gardening time, with the help of Lambeth GP Food Co-operative, which aims to harness the physical and mental therapeutic benefits of gardening while growing more local produce. 1. Soil is an antidepressant Soil has been found to have similar effects on the brain as antidepressants to lift mood. A study by the University of Bristol and colleagues at University College London looked at how mice exposed to 'friendly' bacteria normally found in soil, altered their behaviour in a similar way to that produced by an antidepressant. When the team looked closely at the brains of mice, they found treatment with the bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae activated a group of neurons that produce the brain chemical serotonin, which regulates mood. Gardeners inhale the bacteria and have physical contact with it. The natural effects of the soil bacteria can be felt for up to three weeks, if the experiments with rats are any indication. Mycobacterium antidepressant microbes in soil are also being investigated for improving cognitive function,
Crohn's disease and even rheumatoid arthritis. 2. It boosts brain health Gardening exercises your mind as well as your body. It utilises several our brain functions and includes learning, problem solving and sensory awareness, keeping our minds active. Several studies have shown the benefits of therapeutic gardens for patients with dementia and Alzheimer's. A study, published in the Psychiatry Investigation, said the benefits of horticultural therapy included a reduction of pain, improvement in attention, lessening of stress and a reduction in falls. The charity Thrive uses gardening to help people with a range of mental health problems, including soldiers experiencing post-traumatic stress. Its recent research with early-onset dementia patients showed that, over a year, participants' memory and concentration remained unchanged, but that mood and sociability improved. 3. It incorporates mindfulness You might feel too busy for mindfulness, but research shows it can have a huge impact on your stress levels, helping to stave off anxiety, slash depression risk, boost productivity and ease insomnia. Hilda Burke, psychotherapist, says that gardening is an activity that seems to help a lot of people get into a 'flow' state. This means that you don't notice the time passing, aren't simultaneously thinking over other things, making plans or rehashing the past. As such it helps people both to switch off to other stuff and switch on to the present moment. In other words, to be more mindful.

home and garden
A spring clean for green fingers The sun is shining; birds are singing and its time for your garden to bounce back from the winter weather. Check out our top tips for your getting your garden in great shape before the season reaches its peak: Take and plant up spring cuttings of geraniums, echiums, margaritas, leonothus, rosemary, sage etc. Start to fill gaps in the garden but wait until inland frosts are past before planting the more tender plants. When the rain ceases completely, complete the winter cut back in the flower garden and of hedges and trees. Start a regular programme of spraying fruit trees, bushes and vulnerable plants - such as geraniums - with appropriate eco-sprays. Start to plant out plantlets for summer harvests and sow seeds for tender plants such as squash, courgettes, tomatoes and
peppers that will not be planted out until late April and May. In view of the water shortages last year and the current low volumes of stored water in the reservoirs, install some roof guttering and water barrels/ tanks. If not already done, plant seed potatoes and Jerusalem artichoke tubers. Enjoy harvesting seasonal peas, broad beans and asparagus. Start to mow lawns and give a spring feed. Sieve out the ready compost in the compost heap to top up raised beds and prepare bean trenches for later planting. Once you have a dry day or two, complete the laying of paths and terraces and the construction of water features so that plants can be planted around them for spring and summer colour. Give ponds an annual clean out, cutting back excessive root growth.
Make the most of your space Big or small, make the most of the space you have with 25 easy-tofollow tips. Nothing makes you feel more cramped in your living space than clutter and confusion. Follow our tips to help you minimize the mess and tidy up your space. 1. Add shelves above doorways. 2. Banish room-darkening shadows with additional light fixtures. 3. Put glass shelves across deep-set windows. 4. Use a chest or an ottoman with storage inside as a coffee table. 5. Put low bookcases along a sofa back: they'll double as a sofa table. 6. Keep the flooring throughout a small space the same for visual continuity.
7. Line a room with a shelf high up on the wall. 8. Keep window treatments simple. 9. Run a low bookcase underneath windows. 10. Stretch your space to the outdoors by making a patio or deck comfortable and welcoming. 11. Place a large bucket for magazines next to your favourite chair. 12. Line a hallway with bookshelves. 13. Use a wicker hamper as both an end table and storage space for blankets. 14. Buy a coffee table with a drawer for remotes. 15. Carve out shallow display space between wall studs. 16. Use fewer, larger pieces of furniture and accessories to reduce visual clutter.
17. Choose sofas and chairs with plain or textured upholstery rather than vibrant prints. 18. Install shelves around a window. 19. Add window seats with lids. 20. Run shelves up to the ceiling. 21. Buy a magazine rack or stack magazines in flatbottom baskets underneath a console or coffee table. 22. Take advantage of wasted space with corner bookcases. 23. Think monochromatic. 24. Eliminate obstructions: the further you can see into and through a space, the larger it'll seem. 25. Arrange furnishings to avoid blocking views of windows and doors.

On everyone’s lips Portugal has won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, narrowly beating Bulgaria and Moldova in a nailbiting grand final… nail-biting is an understatement, I was bricking it! Former X-Factor contestant Lucie Jones provided the UK with its highest score since 2009, finishing in 15th place with 111 points. Salvador Sobral’s poignant song Amar Pelos Dois emerged victorious with 758 points, with the 27-year-old describing his win as a “victory for music”. Portugal are the longest-running contestants never to have won the competition, despite trying for 53 years. Amor Pelos Dois was written by Sobral’s sister, Luisa, who finished third in Portugal’s version of Pop Idol – the same contest that the Eurovision winner finished seventh in. As Sobral collected the trophy, Graham Norton – who provided the commentary for the ceremony – noted that the singer looked as “nonplussed now as he has throughout this competition” despite not being touted as a favourite throughout this week’s semi-finals.
Hot off the press Brad Pitt has insisted he’s not suicidal following his split from Angelina Jolie and subsequent public custody battle over their six children. The Hollywood star has returned to the spotlight having been investigated by Children’s Services following an alleged incident, where it was ruled that he was cleared of any wrongdoing, as well as a bitter dispute played out in the media with his former wife.
BGT scandal… again! Angara Contortion, the contortionist group who made us and David Walliams gasp in horror and admiration with their frankly insane body skills/strength/flexibility on Britain's Got Talent, have found themselves caught up in a cheating scandal. The group, who bagged four massive yeses from the judges, are apparently already mega successful as they have spent years travelling the world as part of the famous dance troupe Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil is the largest theatrical production in the world and the show has been watched by 160 million people in 400+ countries. The group have also performed on James Corden's Late Late Show in L.A. My thoughts: Come on people, we all know that BGT is a heavily, over-produced show, which is done mainly for entertainment value. Half the acts are scouted and invited on the show anyway! The performance was still incredible regardless of their background and career… enough!

FUENGIROLA has gained a new cultural attraction in the form of an open-air auditorium, called La Azotea, situated on top of the town hall. The new space will host a series of free events, starting with a poetry evening, Vientos del Sur, on 23 May from 9.30pm and then a yoga workshop on 2 June. The building aims to be one of several roof-top locations which will eventually be used to host cultural events, under further plans by the council. La Azotea has space for 50 people, but limited accessibility as the building’s lift does not reach the rooftop and some stairs must be taken.

Code Breaker
Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 23 represents Q and 20 represents Z, so fill in Q every time the figure 23 appears and Z every time the figure 20 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.
Kenny, I seem to be finding feathers all around my house, when there are no feathered cushions or birds! A friend told me that these are the messages of the angels and that they have something to say to me. I’d like to believe this, but why the message? JJ. Well JJ I have heard so many stories that came from feathers. I myself have experienced this phenomenon many times and reached the conclusion that sometimes I do not listen and this is a way of getting my attention. I would like to think that the Angels are taking the very best care of me. If this means the odd feather falls near to me then I am thankful for the contact. My own Spirit Guide has a name that means I get the visual cue of a feathered headdress sometimes. These feathered messages I take as great spiritual protection and love...hopefully you will be able to, as well!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Stay calm and carry on! You appear to be unshakeable and are biding your time, but the here and now factor is strong; and it feels right to take a chance, despite what others are saying!
Aries: Dwarf Planet Kora calls the shots in an impacted sextile with Mars at the start of a busy week. Sometimes it is the little things that can mean so very much, and it is an attention to detail this week that is the very icing on the cake. Tread carefully and you will see that rather than holding back right now you have to let go and say what you really think!
Leo: Pride prevents you going back to square one, but that would serve to show others the lengths that you are now prepared to go. If somebody changed the goalposts, then that was beyond your control, but solution comes from positive actions. As the Sun prepares to leave the house of Taurus keep a sharp eye on alternatives and be prepared to act.
Taurus: A busy week but one in which there will be several alterations to your schedule. Maybe it would be better not to plan things, and just let things take shape any way that they can? Mercury’s sextile of Neptune brings about the implication that someone doesn’t have the full commitment they need to get a job done, and that you will be called in!
Virgo: Venus squares on Pluto, and this brings questions up that you may be afraid to ask....because you know what the answer may mean. Living on a knife edge is starting to affect your health, so prove the positive by taking a step in the right direction and make sure that your good intentions are known. You are about to be rewarded, and not before time!
Gemini: Mercury is in cahoots with Jupiter and this brings a lucky chance to the fore this week! Amazingly nobody has noticed what it is you see, and this gives you a great advantage. Take control because you can, and don’t delay at implementing what you well know is the best solution to the problem that others have created, and you must act upon.
Libra: Venus is in transit to Saturn and under the current influences of Kora. If ever there was a time to turn back the clock then it is now, because somebody appears to be exploiting a loophole and taking the mickey. Though you have every right to be angry, the calm, inner you tells you to take things in your stride; so soldier on, but just for now!
Aquarius: Do you go, or do you stay? However bad things are beware that the grass may look greener on the other side! You seem to be crossing a deep and fast moving river right now, and the stepping stones are somewhat slippery; so make sure that your journey is for purpose and not just you lashing out at all the negativity that is currently flying around you.
Cancer: Moon magic sees to it that you are guided and gifted and ready to take on a role that others wouldn’t be able to handle. However, the midweek Mars opposition to Saturn will bring significant change to current circumstances. Stall for time and wait and see what comes along. Whilst things need to be nipped in the bud the timing is vital to success!
Scorpio: You are responsive and very wise to what is really going on right now. The opening of your psychic senses sees you backed all the way and able to shun conflict and compromise in favour of positive action and resolve. The Mars opposition of Saturn sees the cat amidst the pigeons and things could come to a head over a personal matter.
Pisces: Mercury courts Neptune and it is high time you spoke up because silence is doing you no favours whatsoever. Tuned to your endearingly spiritual side you know that it is hard to make everyone happy; but turn this around to you, and do not accept pot luck, when what you deserve is out there are waiting to fully connect with you, at long last!
Sagittarius: Somebody needs your help right now, but is afraid to ask. Your sensitive and loving energy are attractions to those who need, and you never knowingly turn anybody away. This week it is hard to know exactly what you can do, but backed by both Jupiter and the clear line of communication brought by Mercury you’ll find your way!
Capricorn: The energies of an ebullient Saturn in opposition to Mars makes things more difficult and delays a solution which should have given a warning short sharp shock to someone who is not toeing the line. You may feel that you are being tested, but it is important to keep your temper, even if it seems as if everybody else around you is losing theirs!

learn Spanish
Position of adjectives
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
There are so many more things to the Spanish language than verbs. Have you ever puzzled about the position of adjectives? I’m sure it must have kept you awake for at least five minutes some night or other. This is what happens – you start off by assuming that adjectives go in front of nouns and are reassured in this assumption by the fact that the barman always understands you when you say “grande cerveza”. Then you learn that that was wrong and that the barman was just humouring you. You should have been saying “cerveza grande” all along because in Spanish adjectives go after the things they describe – car fast, dress blue etc. Well, all of that is fine until you start paying closer attention to the Spanish that you see and hear around you and discover that in fact, sometimes, adjectives go in front of nouns, but it’s extremely difficult to work out why. So, here are some guidelines which might be of assistance. Adjectives follow nouns when they describe it and differente it from other nouns. For example “el vestido azul” (the blue dress) differentiates it from “el vestido verde” and “el vestido amarillo”. However, the adjective goes in front of the nouns when it describes some inherent quality in the noun, rather than differentiating it from other nouns of a similar ilk. This is more difficult to explain than to show examples, I feel, so here we go: La blanca nieve (the white snow); la roja sangre (the red blood); las altas montañas (the high mountains); la mejor idea (the best idea); un buen amigo (a good friend); el grave error (the serious mistake). In all of these examples the adjectives intensify and enhance the nouns. I know you could argue that there are low mountains, bad ideas or not so serious mistakes, but the idea behind these expressions is not to differentiate the nouns from others, but to enhance their inherent qualities. There are other kinds of adjectives that always go in front of nouns, such as the words for this, that, my, and another: este hombre; esa mujer, mi amigo, otro día. When there are two adjectives, we can link them with “y” or we can surround the noun with the less important adjective first. “El coche caro y rápido” “Los jugadores altos y fuertes” “La famosa autora inglesa” “Las viejas casas coloniales”. As you can probably imagine, sometimes the judgment about what is more important is a subjective one. Finally, sometimes the position of the adjectives changes the meaning – before the noun it is more figurative, and after the noun it is more literal. For example: Un gran hombre (a great man) - Un hombre grande (a big man); el nuevo coche (the new car - replacement) - el coche nuevo (the “brand” new car); mi único amigo (my only friend) - mi amigo único (unique); pobre gente (poor people - to be pitied) -gente pobre (people with no money).
Book Review
The Scent of Almonds and Other Stories by Camilla Lackberg
The author presents you with three short Agatha Christie type stories and one novella, perfectly readable but without the depth of her novels such as The Ice Child or Lost Boy. All of the stories are set in the Swedish fishing village of Fjallbacka. In "Dreaming of Elisabeth" we meet Malin and husband Lars who seem to have grown apart and out of love. We are told that the wall between them was insurmountable: "Merely air breathed in and out." Both are experienced sailors so a trip is seen as a make or break situation. Malin isn't quite all there and we discover that she sees images, blood on the tiles and the face of Lars' first wife who had fallen overboard and disappeared for ever. She saw her "silently drifting with her long hair floating around her face. and her dead eyes." The wind gathers force and we see one of the worst storms that Malin has ever experienced. When the boat pitched forward she lost her footing and for a brief moment she thought that Lars was going to push her over the edge and get rid of her just like Elisabeth and inherit her family fortune. However, there are a few surprises in store as it reaches its climax. "An Elegant Death" is predictable. The opening is dramatic when the detectives, characters in Lackberg's novels are investigating a brutal murder of a woman who sold designer dresses. Her skull has been bashed in and her blood has been sprayed on the white walls. We then meet her two daughters, Tina and Linnea. The reader is told who the murderer is and why it was committed before the detectives carry out a forensic examination of the victim's flat. and discover the culprit for themselves! "The Secret of Almonds" reminds me of "And Then There Were None" but less gory. The detective, Martin Molin just happens to be invited by his girlfriend, Lisette to spend a couple of days on an island called Valo to meet her dysfunctional, bickering family over inheritance. Once stranded there are two mysterious deaths which Molin struggles to solve until he has a Sherlock Holmes moment and then it's elementary my dear Watson. A pleasant enough read. info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

High hopes THE MOLLINA branch of The Royal British Legion have set a target of raising €8000 for this year’s Poppy Appeal. The charity has put together a programme of events to raise funds such as an animal-free race day on Tuesday 23 May and a commemoration of the commitment of the armed forces on Tuesday 27 June, which also marks the anniversary of the premature death of Christine Watson, a stalwart volunteer from the Mollina branch, who served over four years as secretary. The group also plan a holiday to the Basque country in October, as well as annual remembrance events, which they hope will take them most of the way towards their target. They encourage everyone to join in with their events, whether an ex-service person or not, and help raise funds.

Orange and cranberry champagne sangria Ok, so some people will do anything to come up with a new funky name mixing two words together like Cronut or Brexit. Anyway, here’s one that can only be a good thing …. Crangria! Have a think for a few moments and work it out. Yes, we’re talking about a fruity take on everyone’s favourite Spanish summer drink and so easy to make. Orange-cranberry champagne sangria is fruity, zingy, light, fresh and fizzy and it’s made with fresh ingredients. Can you think of a better way to ring in the start of summer. INGREDIENTS 1 750-ml bottle of rose champagne 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup cranberry and apple juice 2 juicy oranges 1 lemon 1/3 cup fresh cranberries Ice DIRECTIONS Slice up the juicy oranges and the lemon. Try using the smaller blood oranges as an alternative because they are very juicy so they add more to the mix.
Add the orange and lemon slices, cranberries and sugar to a pitcher. Add in the cranberry juice. Add in the champagne. Place the pitcher in the fridge for an hour to chill. When ready to serve, mix until all sugar is dissolved. Do this after it chills to reduce stirring and preserve those precious bubbles. Most of the sugar will dissolve on its own. Serve over ice with orange slices and cranberries as garnish.

Winemakers in Alicante use the Vaso system - training the vines to grow like goblet shaped bushes - to prevent sunburn and heat stress on the grapes. The grapes are then hand harvested to lower tannin levels and the wine is eventually aged for 6 months in American oak barrels to round out the flavours. This wine is very fragrant with dark fruit and dark chocolate characteristics balanced by delicate floral notes.

Nicole King resident of Marbella IF you live in the Marbella area it is more than likely that you will have heard of the irrepressible and vivacious Nicole King. Nicole and Bobby
With her weekly radio and TV Programmes Mi Marbella broadcast by RTV Marbella, her support of the Triple A animal charity, her involvement of Costa Women and her annual United Nations of Marbella conference, she doesn’t exactly adopt a low profile. The bilingual Nicole was born in the UK but spent many happy holidays in Marbella before returning to her favourite city in Spain for 10 years after finishing her education. She then migrated to Madrid with husband Bobby running promotions for a number of international brands before dedicating herself to discovering why her children had so much difficulty in learning. Helping to resolve this problem gave them a new business as her son and daughter were treated with prescribed special lenses for their glasses and this Nicole became the Spanish distributor of ChromaGen which she still represents today. In 2012, the couple moved back to Marbella which Nicole calls her happy place and almost by chance she took on her new role as an English speaking presenter on the Marbella council’s broadcasting channel. Nicole was delighted to share some time to give readers of the RTN some insight into the woman behind the TV screen.
What is your favourite food? In Marbella we are spoilt for choice so I can’t just choose one thing Who would you invite for a meal? Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla What is your secret pleasure? Singing; I love to sing, for myself and by myself (which is better for everyone lol) What attracted you to Bobby? Everything; he's handsome, clever, creative and he doesn't worry what people think about him; he just does his thing. What attracted him to you? You'd have to ask him that... Anyone famous person who acts out and sets a bad example for our youngsters which includes politicians who lie!!
How do you feel about Brexit and were you able to vote? Personally I was surprised and I'm not happy about it, particularly as I was not able to vote in something that affects me so directly, professionally with our business we import product from the UK to Spain and I thought I'd seen the last of customs clearance, import taxes, duties and middle-men years ago; it's like a big step backwards.
What song would you like played at your funeral? First time I've ever thought about that day .... perhaps the Dirty Dancing track "(I’ve had) The Time of My Life" .... hopefully though I have a long time to make a final decision on this one.

I don't really have one; I try and do everything as it comes up; but I still haven't learnt to play the drums What do you like about yourself most? That people motivate me, not money. I have a gift of being able to tune in to the unique aspect of each person and can highlight that; which makes me feel good. Who would play you in the film of your life? Hopefully me; if not, perhaps Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts. What was your ambition when a child? To be an actress and a barrister What question should we have asked? Regular exercise could improve odds of surviving a heart attack Just a few hours a week of moderate exercise may not prevent all heart attacks, but it could make the difference in who survives one, Danish researchers say. Over several decades, the study found that regular moderate exercisers were half as likely to die when they had a heart attack, compared to people who were sedentary. Despite this benefit, exercise did not seem to protect heart attack survivors from dying or experiencing heart failure later on, the researchers write in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. ‘We already know that exercise protects you from heart attack, as well as a number of other beneficial effects,’ said senior author Dr. Eva Prescott of the University of Copenhagen and Bispebjerg Hospital. ‘The main finding here is that among people who do get a heart attack, the ones who exercise more seem to be more likely to survive a heart attack than people who exercise less,’ Prescott said in an interview with Reuters Health. ‘Exercise is good for you, we know that. These findings confirm that and help us understand why,’ she said. To examine the potential influence of exercise on heart attack survival, the researchers analysed data on more than 14,000 people participating in the Copenhagen City Heart Study, none of whom had experienced a heart attack or stroke at the beginning of the study period. Participants reported on their level of physical activity at the baseline assessment between 1976 and 1978 and researchers followed their health over
the years through 2013. Based on their leisure time physical activity at the start of the study, participants were categorised into one of three groups: sedentary, meaning they engaged in only light activity for less than two hours per week; light exercise, which meant they did two to four hours of walking or equivalent activity each week; or moderate/ high exercise, which meant greater than two hours of vigorous activity like biking weekly. Over the study period, 1,664 people had heart attacks and 425 died right away. The average age at which people had a heart attack was 71. Among those who had a heart attack, the majority, 54 per cent, were in the
light exercise category - and they were 32 per cent more likely to survive than people who were sedentary. People who were moderate or high exercisers were 47 per cent more likely to survive. Having been an exerciser did not guard against future heart failure for heart attack survivors, however. People who exercised were just as likely as sedentary peers to develop heart failure in the five years following a heart attack, the study also found. The same was true for death over the longer term. Among the heart attack survivors, 83 per cent died during the seven-year period following their heart attack. There was no difference in the mortality rate between people who had moderate/high levels of exercise and those who exercised less or not at all.
What are the causes of smelly feet? IT is thought that around 20 per cent of the population suffer from foot odour, but what actually causes smelly feet? A poor diet, metabolic disorders, fungal infections, eating certain food or wearing shoes made of synthetic materials are all factors, according to the College of Chiropodists of Valencia (Icopv). However, the Icopv also noted that generally the most common cause of this problem is the proliferation of bacteria in the body due to excessive sweating. The use of deodorants and antiperspirants “is not a solution” said Icopv who recommend going to a podiatrist to determine the cause. Regarding treatments to solve the smelly feet, they can range from antibiotics or anti-fungals, applying drying powder treatments, the elimination of certain foods and in cases of extreme sweating, surgical treatments. To help prevent odour remember to wash feet daily and fully dry them. Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight or are made from synthetic materials, and opt for leather, canvas or mesh materials to allow the feet to breathe and wear socks that repel moisture, are wool or cotton.

What is Digital Retinal Photography? Nerea Galdos-Pujana, Store Director, Specsavers Opcticas Marbella All eight of our Spanish stores now have Digital Retinal Cameras, one of the latest pieces of technology being used by forward thinking opticians. This is great news for patients, but we realised that not many people knew about the technology and what it can do, so here we’ll be answering your questions. Q: Why is digital retinal photography important? A: It is becoming an increasingly valued part of eye examinations because, far more than just testing your sight, optometrists can in fact make a comprehensive health assessment by using retinal photography alongside more conventional procedures and it is a fantastic tool in safeguarding sight. Q: What does it do? A: This sophisticated process uses a camera to take a picture of the back of the eye – the only part of the human body where the microcirculation of blood can be observed directly. The state-of-the-art technology helps to identify changes that might be associated with certain eye conditions such as diabetic changes, hypertensive retinopathy, macular degeneration, optic nerve disease and retinal holes or thinning. The ability to save images creates a lasting record for ongoing monitoring. If necessary the optician can refer patients directly for further medical examination to their hospital or general practitioner. Q: Can it really identify health problems too? A: In addition to helping opticians identify sightrelated problems, digital retinal photography can also highlight the signs of a range of other conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, risk of a stroke and symptoms associated with brain tumours. This allows patients to seek medical help before symptoms become noticeable in many cases. You can find Specsavers Opticas in Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol or see www.specsavers.es

Forget the fad diets this spring
The warm Easter weather has had many of us reaching into the back of the wardrobe for our Summer essentials earlier than usual this year. Beaches along our coasts have been packed over the holiday period, with sunseekers even tempted to a dip in the Med by daytime temperatures peaking around 26 degrees. However, after a long cold winter of comfort eating and no exercise, those shorts and swimsuits may be a little more snug than should be.When we need to shift a few kilos, it's tempting to turn to one of the diet trends filling the pages of magazines and the internet in the hope of a quick fix solution to getting into shape for the warmer weather. But the sheer volume of mixed messages about diets can be deafening. With this in mind, the British Dietetic Association has released a list of the top five fad diets to avoid for people wishing to shed some weight before Summer. CLEAN EATING The idea is to avoid all processed foods and eat only ‘clean’ foods, by eliminating refined sugar, cooking from scratch, and choosing foods in their natural state. However some extreme versions of clean eating will exclude gluten, grains, dairy, and even in some cases encourage a raw-food diet.In many cases, foods that are actually nutritionally beneficial are deemed as unhealthy such as those containing wholegrains, fruit and dairy, with no basis in scientific evidence. Moreover, often clean eating substitute products – such as coconut oil, and various syrups to sweeten foods – are as high in calories, no better nutritionally and more expensive too. Unless you have a medically diagnosed intolerance or allergy to these foods, there is no need to eliminate them and doing so could lead to deficiencies in your diet. DIET PILLS Many of these pills claim to keep fat from being absorbed by your body, or ‘melt’ fat, whilst others claim to suppress appetite or boost metabolism. There is a danger here because diet pills should never be taken without first consulting your GP, pharmacist or dietitian as even regulated weight loss medicines on prescription can have nasty side effects including diarrhoea. TEATOXES Teatoxing is short for ‘tea detoxing’ – these tea products have varying claims from detoxing the body, improving skin, reducing bloating and losing weight. These teas often contain extra caffeine in the form of
guarana or yerba mate, diuretic ingredients such as dandelion and nettle and the laxative, senna, which is not safe to take for longer than a week without medical supervision. They might create the impression of weight loss and detoxification but this is usually water-weight loss. Couple this with the risk of the accompanying side effects such a diarrhoea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, gut damage and a lack of scientific evidence ….. Step away from the Teatox.
these juices can add up to as much as 400 kcal per glass. If you are still eating your normal breakfast on top of this, you are more likely to gain weight from consuming more calories, rather than lose weight.Instead of choosing an exclusional diet, the BDA advice people to enjoy a rich variety of foods in appropriate portion sizes – moderation is key as well as being physically active. Losing weight is challenging and keeping it off is too, but it’s not impossible. Don’t make it even harder for yourself by following a fad.
THE 6:1 DIET The 6:1 diet involves eating like you usually do for six days and then for one day a week, some followers of this diet completely fast, meaning they don’t consume any food for 24 hours.Completely fasting unless properly managed is likely to lead to a lack of concentration, tiredness and low mood, which isn’t going to make you more productive. There is no evidence that a diet like this would make you more creative either, and depending on your age, health and lifestyle, fasting could be dangerous. GREEN JUICES Another means of ‘detoxing’ and weight management, green juices are essentially juices or smoothies made up of various fruits, vegetables, powders etc. Fans claim benefits ranging from detoxing to rejuvenation and weight loss. The body is perfectly capable of detoxing itself without the aid of these green liquid concoctions. Adding a green juice to an unhealthy diet is never going to make up for poor choices when it comes to food.In addition, people add in ingredients like nuts, coconut oil and whole avocados to their green breakfast juices too – meaning

Mum’s the word In a survey commissioned by pro-age beauty brand Look Fabulous Forever, which creates make-up for mature skin, it was found that despite the torrent of beauty advice we get from experts and celebrities, it’s actually our mums we’re most likely to listen to in the beauty stakes. In fact, 64 per cent of daughters say they trust their mother over anyone else when it comes to beauty tips. A total of 500 18-49 year-old women were questioned for the survey, with the participants sharing the best things they’ve learnt from their mum. Topping the list of the 10 best pieces of beauty advice is taking your make-up off before bed, which received an impressive 56 per cent of the vote. At number two was remembering to moisturise your neck as well as your face, scoring 28 per cent, followed closely by always smile as you’ll automatically look more beautiful, with 26 per cent.

Make ‘scents’ of summer fragrances The scent of summer in Spain isn’t all pine trees, suntan oil, gin y tonica and sardines cooked on a hot barbecue. Wearing a light, fresh scent, more suited to warm Mediterranean nights rather than a heavier, deeper smell more at home in a dark nightclub, is the key to smelling at your best now the high season is approaching. Here are a few of the brand-new summer-friendly scents available from some of the best names on the bathroom shelf. TOMMY HILFIGER / TOMMY TROPICS There’s a touch of lavender to re-enforce the theme of warm days spent outside, but once it’s been on the skin a while, this multi-faceted scent turns into something altogether richer, warmer and more leathery and it’s fantastic value for money too. DIOR HOMME SPORT (2017 EDITION) Not so much a new fragrance as a reworked one, the perennially popular Sport scent from Dior Homme now features an even fresher opening owing to an olfactory fruit bowl of blood orange, grapefruit and juicy pear. HUGO BOSS / BOSS BOTTLED TONIC A true contemporary classic, Boss Bottled takes two timehonoured styles of men’s fragrance – oriental and fougère – and fuses them together to form a scent that’s sold over
70 million bottles to date. The apple, geranium, clove and cinnamon core of the original is still present in the brand’s 2017 Tonic, but with the addition of ginger and bitter orange, it’s much sharper and altogether more effervescent. JIMMY CHOO/ MAN ICE Created by Michel Almairac – the nose behind Joop! Homme and Gucci Pour Homme – this retooled version of 2014’s Jimmy Choo Man adds sparkling citrus notes of bergamot and mandarin. Almairac has also pulled the olfactory equivalent of adding a slice of lemon to a G&T by introducing a hint of apple to give the fragrance a brighter, juicier feel, alongside earthy patchouli and sensual musk that mean it works just as well for evenings. GIVENCHY / GENTLEMEN ONLY EAU FRAÎCHE Givenchy’s latest release is the fourth fragrance to bear the Gentleman Only name (following the original, Intense and Casual Chic versions). The new limited-edition summer variant is, as you might expect, much crisper with notes of lemon and Nepal mint, rounded out with earthy vetiver and smoky ambroxan. Like most flankers, it’s different to but not totally removed from the original, so if you loved Gentlemen Only chances are you’ll love this reinterpretation too.
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER / LE MALE SUPERMAN Whether encased in armour, leather, neoprene or emblazoned in tattoos, Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic Le Male fragrance has a long and playful history of bottle redesign for its limited editions. This summer’s Superman edition is perfect for comic book geeks and fragrance collectors alike. The scent – which sees the original mint note dialled up and joined by one reminiscent of freshly washed linen – isn’t too shoddy either. TOM FORD / SOLE DO POSITANO And finally, a fragrance for the millionaire in you and by far the most expensive in this list, summer wouldn’t be summer without at least one new addition to Tom Ford’s Private Blend Portofino Neroli collection. This, the seventh addition to the range, is less obviously citrusy and more floral than the original Portofino Neroli (there’s a big hit of ylang-ylang and jasmine in there), pushing it into traditionally female territory.
Factors driving depression may shift with age Different types of problems are most likely to afflict people at different times of life, so common risk factors for depression change over the years, too, Dutch researchers say. But when a risk factor is uncommon among peers – such widowhood or poor health at a young age – it can have an outsized effect on depression risk, the study team reports in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. ‘A wide range of risk factors for depression is relevant across the entire life span,’ said lead author Roxanne Schaakxs of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam in a statement to Reuters Health. ‘However, some risk factors expected to be strongly related to depression in certain ages, may actually affect other age groups to a larger extent.’ Depression is a complex condition and many experts believe that in addition to innate genetic and personality factors, risks like stressful life events, health issues and money problems can contribute to its development. To see which depression risk factors affect people at various stages of life and how much of an effect each factor has, the study team analysed data on more than 2,000 adults participating in two long-term studies of depression and anxiety. Subjects in one study were aged 18 to 65 when they began participating, while participants in the other study were aged 60 to 93 when it started. At baseline, a total of 1,431 people had major depressive disorder and 784 people had no symptoms or history of the condition.
The research team assessed 19 different risk factors for depression in different age groups, comparing people who had never been depressed with people who were currently depressed. Most of the risk factors did increase people’s likelihood of being depressed at any age, including low education, recent negative life events, personality traits, reduced social functioning, an unhealthy lifestyle and poor health. However, five of the risk factors were more strongly related to depression in certain age groups. For people aged 18 to 39, health factors like overweight or obesity, pain, childhood abuse and chronic disease were strongly associated with depression. For those over 60, low income was a greater risk for depression than in other age groups. People with risk factors that were ‘unexpected’ based on their age also had a higher depression risk than those in other age groups where the same risk factor was more common, researchers found. For example, chronic illness was more strongly linked to depression in younger people than older people while low income carried higher depression risk in older people though it was more common among younger people. When young people are struggling with circumstances like illness or loneliness, it may come as a surprise and they may not have the skills to cope. When an unexpected life event happens, pay close attention to your reaction to it. If you find that you are struggling, go to see your doctor.

One in ten Brits have been victims of cyber fraud Research of over 10,000 consumers has revealed that one in ten people have been a victim of cyber fraud. When asked what their biggest online safety concerns are, respondents cited a wide range of attacks from phishing emails to identity theft to card details being cloned, computers crashing, malware infected ads, PayPal accounts being hacked and also becoming victims of ransomware. Protecting against the theft of personal information was cited by 87 per cent as their biggest online security concern. 69 per cent of respondents also flagged up concerns about phishing emails pretending to be from reputable companies as a significant worry. The loss of banking information concerned 72 per cent of respondents while a further 67 per cent flagged up ransomware as of particular concern. Unsurprisingly though, a large 84 per cent simply don’t want their computers infected by viruses when they go online.
What is WannaCry? WannaCry ransomware has spread across 150 countries and sent many NHS hospitals into meltdown. But what is it? Wanna Decryptor, also known as WannaCry or wcry, is the ransomware program behind the global cyber-attack that affected the NHS. Ransomware is the malicious software used by hackers to block access to a computer system until a ransom is paid. WannaCry locks the data on a computer system and leaves the user with two files: instructions on what to do and the Wanna Decryptor program. Victims are warned that their files will be deleted within days if they do not pay up using Bitcoin, the world’s biggest virtual currency. The WannaCry ransomware affects machines running the Windows operating system. Should you pay the ransom? The National Crime Agency (NCA) have advised victims NOT to pay the ransom. The NCA said in a statement: ‘Victims of fraud should
report it to Action Fraud. We encourage the public not to pay any ransom demand.’ Check Point is among the cybersecurity firms warning that victims should not pay the ransom demanded by WannaCry ransomware. In a blog post earlier this week, the firm said not a single case has been reported of anyone receiving their files back after paying the ransom. Check Point also highlighted the problematic payment and decryption system as well as a false demo of the decryption operation. It has been claimed that the way in which WannaCry has been designed means that most people are unlikely to ever see their files again. Victims are expected to contact the criminals for a key to unlock their files, said security expert Prof Alan Woodward, from the University of Surrey. ‘I very much doubt anyone would return your contact request, bearing in mind the attention that is now on this,’ he told the BBC.
‘If anyone pays this ransom they are more than likely going to send Bitcoin that will sit in an address for ever more. No point.’
App of the week
‘TRIPADVISOR’
If you’ve not used TripAdvisor in a while, you may be surprised to see how far the app has grown. In years past, travellers primarily relied upon TripAdvisor for reviews of hotels and B&Bs. Now, there’s a lot more the app and website can do.
via integration with Grubhub. For example, if you find a restaurant that interests you but don’t feel like leaving your hotel room, you can tap a link in TripAdvisor and be sent to the Grubhub app to place an order. • Download city guides with maps, reviews and photos available offline - particularly helpful if you want to keep your smartphone data usage to a minimum. • Search airfares, with the ability to filter results. • Find vacation rentals, a la Airbnb, at your destination. • Use the travel timeline to get hotel, restaurant, and other recommendations based on location. The feature will also use your location to build a timeline of where you’ve been, and it will import photos you took along the way to illustrate. It’s optional and can be turned on/off easily.
• Search for nearby restaurants; read customer reviews; and book a table via OpenTable. • Get meals delivered from participating restaurants
Bottom line: Think of TripAdvisor as Yelp for travel, plus lots of additional tools for planning and enjoying your trip.

HTC hoping to put squeeze on competitors HTC has had many firsts in its 20-year history. It made the first Android phone, the first 4Genabled phone in the US, a slew of the first Windows Phone handsets and so on. Its latest model is called the HTC U11. It’s certainly innovative. First of all, it’s squeezable. Pressure sensors on the long edges of the phone, bottom half only, respond when you squeeze the handset. HTC claims that this will work even if the phone is clad in the transparent protective case which comes supplied. The squeeze effect also works if you have gloves on or if the phone is underwater. The phone has water resistance to IP67 rating. So, why squeeze? Well, there are a lot of different functions, such as launching apps or triggering the shutter for a selfie. A quick squeeze will switch from front to rear camera while a longer squeeze takes repeated photos. It also works to turn on the flashlight or launch Google Assistant. If you’re texting, a squeeze launches the microphone so you can dictate your words. There are other functions, with more coming in July when HTC releases an app called Edge
Sense which will let users configure apps as they wish. So, for instance, when you’ve launched Google Maps and you can’t quite see what you want to, a squeeze will zoom right in. Other features include Amazon’s Alexa app built in and multiple microphones designed to make audio recording more immersive when shooting video. The front camera is wide-angle and 16-megapixel resolution. The phone is also the first to come with noisecancelling headphones in the box. Like the iPhone 7, there’s no headphone socket on the HTC so these connect through the USB-C socket. But HTC has also included an adaptor with built-in DAC so you can still plug in regular headphones. It comes in five colours including Sapphire Blue, Amazing Silver, Brilliant Black and Ice White. Later in the year there will be a Solar Red version. The phone has a large 5.5-inch screen, the same size as on the iPhone 7 Plus. HTC is promising strong battery life and quick charge – a day’s life from a half-hour charge. The phone goes on sale next month for £649 (€761)
Twitter co-founder returns Twitter co-founder Biz Stone recently revealed he will be returning full time to the microblogging service in an unspecified role. ‘My top focus will be to guide the company culture, that energy, that feeling,’ Stone said in a blog post, adding he would not be replacing anyone at Twitter when he joins the company in a couple of weeks. Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey had asked him to come back to work at the company, Stone said in the post.
‘Excited to have Biz’s energy and heart back at Twitter! #BizIsBack,’ Dorsey tweeted. Stone returns to Twitter at a time when the company is doubling down in its efforts to boost user growth. He was one of the co-founders of Twitter along with Dorsey, Ev Williams and Noah Glass. Stone left Twitter in 2011 and went on to co-found online publishing platform Medium and search engine company Jelly, which was acquired by Pinterest in March.
‘The (Pinterest) deal did not require me to work at the company we sold to, but I’m the type of person who has to keep working,’ Stone said. Twitter shares were up 2.4 percent at $19.65 (€17.73)

Crash driver says: “I need a beer...” Police body cameras captured a chaotic scene at a Cleveland-area convenience store after a man drove his car through the front of the store and barricaded himself in a walk-in cooler. According to local press reports Convenience Mart in Rocky River, Ohio, had just closed in the early hours when a black Dodge Challenger smashed its way through the security bollards at around 40 miles per hour and crashed through the front window. Police arrived to find the car parked in the store with its hazards on, the store clerk trapped beneath debris, and no driver. The clerk told officers the driver got out, told the clerk that he needed a beer, and then wandered into the walk-in cooler. Officers found the driver barricaded inside the cooler. A tense standoff ensued with the agitated, confused man, who dared the cops to shoot him. Police learned he was suffering PTSD-related issues from his military service and job with the Federal Protective Service. “The conversation he was having with the police was deranged, consistent with somebody who was going through a mental crisis,” RRPD Chief Kelly Stillman told WJW. Eventually, an officer was able to use a taser on the man, who put up a fight but was eventually subdued. He faces charges that include DUI and reckless driving.
Thankfully, the store clerk escaped relatively unscathed. His life was saved by a deli case that absorbed the impact of the car and sheltered him from falling debris. “Had the car been over a couple more feet, he was hurt, it could have been serious bodily injury, even possibly death. I mean that’s a four, five thousand pound automobile coming at 30, 40 miles an hour. He was lucky, very lucky,” said Chief Stillman.
I name this motorbike... As the summer gets well under way, for many there’s no better way to spend a few hours than getting on their prized motorbike and letting the wind (and the midges) get in their faces! Motorbikes can also be ‘Marmite’. Some hate them and would never even get aboard one – for others they provide a sense of freedom riding along on stylish, speedy, highperformance vehicles. A motorcycle can become an extension of the rider themselves. But what makes these bikes so memorable and how did they get their names in the first place? A name can be powerful reminder of what a bike stands for and even the non-bike
SUZUKI HAYABUSA Never to be outdone, Suzuki brought out the Hayabusa to compete with Honda. Hayabusa is the Japanese word for peregrine falcon, an eater of blackbirds. The bike is able
to reach a top speed of 194 mph, surpassing the previous record set by the Blackbird. The Hayabusa’s speed coupled with its performance makes it one of the best motorcycles on the market.
fan recognises some of these iconic marks. Here’s five of the most well-known among serious petrol-heads! BLACKBIRD HONDA CBR1100XX When a bike is named after a legendary military aircraft, you know there’s something special about it. The Blackbird Honda references the Lockheed SR-71, one of the fastest aircrafts of all time. This is the perfect name for a vehicle that briefly became the fastest production bike in the world. The 1996 models were painted dark grey to match the colour scheme of the Lockheed.
SUZUKI KATANA Introduced in 1980, the Suzuki Katana conjures the image of a samurai. Katanas needed a great amount of skill to use and that can be applied to the design of the bike. When it was brought out, the bike had a futuristic style that was years ahead of the time. Later, the Katana name was given to a number of American models. DUCATI MONSTER The Ducati Monster lives up to its name by having an imposing, muscular build. The bike was designed in 1992 by Miguel Angel Galluzzi and Ducati’s technical director Massimo Bordi said he wanted
“something which displayed a strong Ducati heritage but which was easy to ride and not a sports bike.” TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE The Triumph Bonneville features a parallel-twin four-stroke engine and the original was launched in 1959. The bike takes its name from Boneville Salt Flats in the USA, where many people have tried to break motorcycle speed records. The Bonneville’s fame increased when it was used by Steve McQueen’s stunt double to jump a barbed wire fence in The Great Escape.

The next Lions event will be the Charter Ball on 9 June at the Hotel Tamisa Golf, starting at 7.30pm for 8pm. Three Premier League clubs face end of season Europe play off
The end of season race to be crowned English Premier League Champions has been a fairly tame affair this year, once Spurs ran out of steam in pursuit of their West London rivals. The real drama has occurred in the fight for a coveted, money spinning, Champions League spot and with one game left to play, there could be a final twist in the tale of the race for Europe.Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all face a possible playoff to determine qualification for next season's Champions League. The three clubs, occupying third to fifth place in the Premier League, are separated by three points going into Sunday's final round of games. But their goal difference and goals scored are similar enough to raise the realistic prospect of two teams finishing joint third or fourth with identical records - necessitating a one-off play-off match. This is the how the teams stand going into Sunday, showing goals scored, goals against, goal difference, points accrued and final day opponents. GS GA GD Points Final game 3rd Man City 75 39 +36 75 Watford (a) 4th Liverpool 75 42 +33 73 Middlesbrough (h) 5th Arsenal 74 43 +31 72 Everton (h) Premier League rules state: "If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, venue and timing of which shall be determined by the board." With so many permutations on scores, it’s impossible to predict whether the play off scenario will actually occur, but the very real prospect will keep the fans of all three teams on the edge of their seats on Sunday afternoon.
Murray unsure of reason for current slump in form Andy Murray will still be the world number 1 during Wimbledon this year, but will have to play exceptionally well if he is to remain at the top come the autumn. That is because tennis' ranking system is calculated on an annual basis, with players defending points they won in the same week the previous year. Murray has shed a significant number of points by losing early in both Madrid and Rome, as last year he was the runner-up in Spain and the champion in Italy. However, the world number one can find "no reason" for his "struggle" with form following defeat in the second round of the Italian Open. The 30-year-old lost 6-2 6-4 to Fabio Fognini in Rome and has now won one title from eight events in 2017. The French Open begins on 28 May but Murray has only reached one semi-final in his last four clay court events. "I'm just not playing good tennis and need to try to work out how to turn it around," he said. "I believe I will."He added: "The last couple of weeks have definitely been a struggle and a long way from where I'd like to be. There is no reason for it from my end.
"Movement the last two weeks has not been good. My movement has been a big help, the last couple of years, but certainly the last couple of weeks, that's been a problem."The Scot insists his difficulties are nothing to do with the pressures of being world number one. But he admitted he found it hard to create chances against world number 29 Fognini, as he suffered a fifth defeat in 10 matches. Murray's last title came in Dubai in February, a contrast to the form he showed in winning five events in a row to end 2016. He will arrive in Roland Garros - he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in last year's final - with his run to the semi-final of the Barcelona Open in April as his best return on clay in 2017. Since that loss to Dominic Thiem, he has gone down to world number 50 Borna Coric at the Madrid Open before a straight sets defeat by Fognini. Ivan Lendl - who coaches Murray on a part-time basis - will join up with the team later this week for the grand slam event in Paris. Murray has nearly 4000 points to defend at the French Open, The Queen's Club and Wimbledon, and an even greater number in October and November - the one down side of winning his final five tournaments of 2016.
