MUTINOUS Malaga Airport staff have threatened to go on strike during the peak tourist months of July and August if bosses refuse to listen to their demands. As the Costa del Sol gears up for what is predicted to be a record summer, trade unions are outraged over staff cuts and a lack of pay rises. The UGT, CCOO and USO unions this week released a joint statement warning that baggage handlers and other staff are prepared to organise a series of strikes should state airport manager Aena fail to discuss the issues with them.
Jose Muñoz, secretary general of CCOO for Aena said that the situation in Malaga has reached a “critical” point since “there are not enough staff to carry out the daily work.” It comes after several years of salary cuts and amendments to workers’ rights which the unions view as unacceptable given the airport’s booming finances. “For the CCOO, UGT and USO it is absolutely unacceptable that the companies of the group generate substantial profits transferred to private hands via the distribution of dividends and tariff policy, while staff continue to suffer a loss of rights and increased workloads,” reads the
statement. According to official figures, Aena ended 2016 with a €1.16 billion net profit and an 11 per cent increase in national air traffic. “The profits that Aena published for 2061 justify the need for a sustainable plan to generate employment and improve working conditions,” conclude the unions. Security guards at the airport are also unhappy and have spent three days protesting this week after a drop in wages. Their union, the CSI-F, describes a “widespread malaise” among airport staff, who currently lack a human resources manager.

Women against domestic abuse
3
Landslide victory
by Sally Underwood THE MIJAS women’s association, Soroptomist, has been chosen to highlight domestic abuse this month. The group held an event yesterday at their headquarters, titled “paint your world orange,” inspired by the UN campaign of the same name. The initiative sees clothes, social network sites and even buildings coloured orange to highlight the issue. Mijas Council uses the 25th of each month to raise awareness of domestic abuse, each time collaborating with a different charity or organisation, with this month involving Soroptomist. Mari Carmen Carmon, the Councillor for Equality, commented,“we are proud to see how the society is involved in this type of initiative and how they are so productive in fighting against violence against women.” She added it was “an issue which the people of Motril are very aware of and that affects us all.” Women show their solidarity

Another brick in the wall by Sally Underwood ESTEPONA’S Council are building a retaining wall to avoid landslides in the Arroyo Piojo area. The works will be undertaken by the council after the original contractors did not fulfill their obligations in the environment. The Councillor for Development, Infrastructure and Tourism, Ana Velasco, explained the works will stabilize the land to avoid possible landslides and also allow the collection of surface water collecting on the land to be channelled to a storm drain. The mayor added these works, which have already been awarded to the company Helopav SA, are necessary to build a future public park in the area, close to the existing children's park. Ms Velasco added the retaining wall will be 70 metres long and five metres high. The works, which will cost €60,000, will not be financed by the council, instead they will be paid for by a bank guarantee from the original contractors. In total, the council plans to carry out works worth over €4 million using guarantees from workers who did not fulfil their contractual obligations. Ms Valesco pointed out works using these funds are already underway in the Soto de la Resinaera area, as well as in Ortega y Gasset. Other planned improvements include reconditioning the Parque de los Bomberos, costing €131,319. The works, which are still at the tender phase, will include a new 80 metre track with parking both sides, which will connect

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 3.6 degrees on the Richter scale has rocked the Costa del Sol, to the East of Malaga. It was just before noon when the quake was felt, the epicentre of which was in the Sierra de Cacin. It has been reported that thousands of those living to the east of Malaga, particularly those with homes in the hills, felt the quake, which took place at 12 kilometres below the earth; making it more noticeable than deeper events. The emergency services did not receive any calls apart from one household in Torrox which reported feeling a “strong jolt”. The person was not injured, nor was any property damaged.

Miss World Help for local Malaga business
5
A PLEA to support small local business and improve the commercial environment using €4.8 million is being made by the PSOE in Malaga. The money is part of a larger amount being paid by the companies responsible for the extension of the Plaza Mayor Shopping Centre and the socialist group argue that at least some of the funds being paid to the council should be used to improve the look and facilities of neighbourhood shopping areas. Small business is part of the lifeblood of the city and therefore needs to be supported with run down areas in particular cleaned up with new parking, street lighting and improved access. The new stores in the shopping centre will in the main consist of up market brands and the PSOE believes that it is important that local people have the opportunity to purchase from local shops in a pleasant environment. The matter will be discussed and voted on in the council chamber.

by Staff Reporter THINGS are hotter in the lead up to this year’s Miss World Malaga, due to take place in the Costa del Sol’s Velez Malaga. The event, which is set to take place at the Ermita del Cerro de San Cristobal, kicks off on 16 June. Sergio Hijano, Councillor of Fairs and Festivals, said the event was an opportunity for “promotion, since the 35 candidates for Miss World Malaga will be photographed next to the most significant monuments of the city in a promotion that begins in June and ends with the final on 5 August.” He added the contest was, “a job opportunity for everyone involved” and said the council was selling 800 seats to view the show, “which will have to be purchased prior to sale.” Maria Santana, the Councillor for Commerce, has announced the hashtag which will be used to follow the various contestants on social media. # SienteVelezMálaga has now been set up and she has encouraged everyone to “follow it to promote the town.” Elisa Paez, the manager of the Association for the Promotion of Tourism of Axarquia, added that participants will get to know Velez Malaga “on the tourist train and then travel to the coast to visit Torre del Mar and the Port of Caleta de Velez.” The company Miss Mundo Malaga has selected 35 candidates from a total of 400 women from all over the province who went through rounds of selection. In the two-month contest, only 12 women will go on to the semifinals, and six of them will enter the final. The winner will be made “ambassador of a social project that is yet to be decided.” The contest’s crown is an exclusive creation, made by a goldsmith, which incorporates green and purple precious stones, with jasmine details.

Touching tribute to Manchester victims REPRESENTATIVES from Marbella’s Council have held a minute’s silence at the town hall, honouring the victims of Monday night’s shocking terrorist attack at a concert in Manchester. by Sally Underwood Twenty-two people were killed, including an eight-year-old girl, and 59 injured when a homemade device was detonated at the end of a concert at the Manchester Arena by Ariana Grande, an American singer. Police believe Manchester-born 22-year-old Salman Abedi blew himself up in the attack which has been claimed by Islamic State. Witnesses at the concert, which was aimed at young, mainly female music fans, reported seeing bodies on the floor, as well as nuts and bolts from the explosive. Abedi had been a student at Salford university and had lived at several properties around Manchester. His family are of Libyan origin and the police believe the bomber was not acting alone.
Four fakers arrested FOUR people in Marbella have been arrested by the National Police for allegedly selling counterfeit items. The goods, which sold for between €60 and €90, were sold in shops in the tourist areas, one in the centre of Marbella, and the other in the commercial district of Puerto Banus. Police seized 1,400 fake items, whose retails value was €220,000, saying the items, “caused a loss both to big companies and consumers.” The four have now been arrested for crimes against industrial property and fraud.

Burglars nabbed
POLICE in Motril have arrested five people who were allegedly found stealing from a house. The officers from the Local Police surprised the alleged perpetrators, three of whom were minors, at around 1am after receiving a tipoff from a member of the public. Councillor for Public Security, Maria Angeles Escamez, explained, “once there, they intercepted three men who were allegedly burgling the house and were attempting to flee. The officers surrounded the house to prevent their escape, with agents stationed at the front and back. Likewise, they also kept watch over the roof and garden.” She went on, “thus, after locating the owner of the property and accessing the house, Local Police officers found a pile of items on the floor and that the place had been turned over. On first inspection, they did not find anyone, on proceeding upstairs they found two people in the wardrobe of one bedroom. Startled, the alleged burglars tried to assault the officers and flee, which they did not manage thanks to the coordination between our agents and the National Police.” Once identified, the two adults and three minors were taken to the National Police station and then transferred to court.

Malaga Airport wins duty free war AIR PASSENGERS spend more money on duty free at Malaga Airport than any other in Spain, it has been announced.
by Staff Reporter SHOPS IN the airport, which occupy around 15,000 square metres of its total space, have seen business booming, with over 16.6 million passengers passing through the airport last year. Despite Malaga being Spain’s fourth largest airport, it is thought travellers spend the most money here because the expanded shopping area has received so much funding, amounting to around €300 million. Analysts also believe the high proportion of local products sold has contributed to the
airport’s success, with tourists buying last-minute traditional gifts for friends and family before flying home. The Russians are king when it comes to spending the most. According to Fernandez Bosch, Commercial Services Director of Aena, Malaga’s operator, “"A third of the passengers are British, and they like to purchase in these shops. They spend more at the airport than the Germans. The proportion of Scandinavians and French is also notable. And Russians stand out because they spend a lot.” As well as putting Malaga firmly
Bursting THANKS TO heavier than usual rainfall during the winter, La Concepcion reservoir in Istan is almost completely full. In fact there has been so much rainfall that water has had to be released into the sea on three separate occasions. As there is still some water shortage in the north of Malaga Province, a decision may be made for the future as to whether to increase the size of the reservoir or to pump excess water to Malaga rather than waste it. The one thing that seems fairly certain is that Marbella and the surrounding towns should not have any fears about water shortages during this coming summer.
Orange party ONCE A year, Coin welcomes thousands of visitors to a festival celebrating the end of the orange harvest. Around 8,000 people are estimated to have visited the town for this year´s event, which offered up a wide range of orange-based dishes, as well as local craft products. The event, which is held on a Sunday each May, has been recognised in Malaga as a tourist event of special note since 2004. This year, festival-goers were treated to an orange salad which incorporated cod, onions and potatoes, as well as a special dish created by chef, Felix Mesa, cooked in the town centre in an enormous pan. Many local residents also prepared deserts for visitors, using orange as the main ingredient, and the event.
on Spain’s tourism map, the airport’s duty free success also contributes heavily to the local economy, with 1,000 of the hub’s 6,000 employees working in its stores. The space houses 25 stores, seven of which are duty free and 7,000 square metres of cafes and restaurants. The most purchased item is vodka, followed by gin. Sixty thousand bottles of local wine also leave the shelves each year. In addition, 2 million hot drinks are sold each year; 1.5 million sandwiches, and 1 million toblerones; a beloved classic for the traveller.
Two detained for robbery LOCAL POLICE officers have detained two men thought to be responsible for a crime-wave in Arroyo de la Miel. The men, who are thought to have carried out a series of robberies among local shops and businesses, were caught allegedly robbing a Chinese bazaar on Calle Ciudad de Melilla. One of the men, a 33-year-old, is thought to be the gang’s ringleader, who has already been arrested six times for burglary. Police had been investigating since September after receiving complaints from local businesses about thefts. It seems the men had been hitting shops with little or no security on quiet streets in the early hours of the morning. The men were forcing their way in through windows or doors and then taking money from cash registers, as well as computers, televisions and mobile phones. They always wore gloves and are thought to have stashed their plunder in safe houses, owned by relatives to avoid detection. Among the businesses robbed were a pharmacy, beauty shop, bar, driving school, tattoo shop, tobacconist and hearing test centre.

Four climbers found dead on Everest by Tahnee Wright Four climbers have been found dead in their tents on Mount Everest, officials said on Wednesday, with suspicion they died of carbon monoxide poisoning, taking the death toll on the world's highest mountain to 10 in the past month. The four climbers were found in two tents at Camp Four, at 8,000 metres (26,246 feet), overnight by Nepali sherpas. It was not clear how they died and their identities have not yet been established. The Himalayan Times reported that two of the dead were foreigners and rescuers believed they had suffocated. ‘It is most likely they died from carbon monoxide poisoning by using their stoves in the tent without proper ventilation,’ U.S. climber Alan Arnette, who blogs on Everest, said in a post. The sherpas who discovered the bodies were on their way to retrieve the body of Vladimir Strba of Slovakia who died near the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) summit at the weekend. Strba's body has been brought down to Camp Two at 6,400 metres (21,000 feet) and was expected to be brought down to base camp later on Wednesday. More than 5,000 climbers have scaled Mount Everest since it was first climbed by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and nearly 300 have died trying. Many of the victims remain on the mountain, entombed in snow, as it is too difficult to bring their bodies down. Exhaustion, exposure, frostbite, falls and
altitude sickness are major causes of death on Everest but the biggest killer in recent years has been avalanches. Eighteen people were killed in 2015 when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered avalanches that smashed into the base camp. A year earlier, 16 sherpas hauling gear to higher camps for climbers were killed when they were hit by an avalanche while they were crossing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp. Climbers can ascend Everest from the Nepal side and the Chinese side. One of the 10 deaths this month has been on the Chinese side. Nepal has issued permits to 371 foreign climbers this season, up from last year's 281, each of which cost $11,000 (€9,830). In addition, hundreds of sherpas are climbing the mountain, or helping others to. Permit fees are a major source of income for cash-strapped Nepal which earned more than $4 million (€3.57 million) this year from Everest permits, officials said. The climbing season closes at the end of May when the rainy season traditionally begins, bringing cloud and snow at high altitudes.
Balcony fall girl recovering A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl who fell 10 metres from a third storey balcony in the Costa del Sol’s Rincon de la Victoria is said to be recovering. The child, who was apparently playing with a friend when she went over, was initially on a ventilator at the Materno Infantil hospital in Malaga. She is now said to be breathing on her own, although she is still suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Neighbours say they alerted emergency services after hearing the girl’s father shout “my girl, my girl.” They then saw her lying on the ground, bleeding from her mouth and nose. She is thought to have regained consciousness before being transferred to hospital. Police are now investigating the events leading up to her fall but believe it was an accident.
Drug baron imprisoned A 28-YEAR-OLD Austrian man has been put in prison after allegedly creating designer drugs in Mijas, which he distributed across Europe in toy boxes. The man, who supposedly went by a false name, was using different couriers to send the drugs, which were hidden in parcels or toys. He has now been charged with crimes against public health and falsifying documentation. Officers from the National Police have seized 350 kilograms of chemicals used for making synthetic drugs, as well as a vehicle, €1,675 and industrial machinery for weighing, preparing and processing of chemicals. Police investigated after receiving a tip-off to a laboratory, and soon identified the man. They then looked at his buying patterns and discovered he was purchasing chemicals used to make drugs. When they raided him, officers found vacuum-packed drugs hidden in toy cars and dolls. They also managed to intercept drugs en route with transport companies. The man was arrested, and his assets seized, and he has been placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, who ordered his immediate imprisonment.
Fickle finger of fate A MAN in Mijas has this week lost three fingers after a camping gas bottle he was handling exploded. It is as yet unclear what caused the accident but the man, who is said to be around 50-years-old, was transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital. Local Police, Guardia Civil officers and health workers all attended the incident, which took place in Las Lagunas.

Tributes flood in for ‘the kentucky kid’ by Staff Reporter Members of the motor racing community took to social media to post messages and tributes to Nicky Hayden, who died last Monday, five days after he was involved in a cycling accident in Italy. Hayden, the immensely popular former Moto GP champion, was hit by a car during a training exercise in Italy last week and suffered severe head and chest injuries. On Monday, the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital, where he had been placed into a medically induced coma, confirmed that he had died. “The medical team has verified the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who has been undergoing care since last Wednesday 17 May in the intensive care unit of the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena following a very serious polytrauma which occurred the same day,” the statement said. The driver of the vehicle that struck Hayden was given a breathalyser test and was not found to have been over the limit at the time of the accident. Italian police have opened an inquiry
into the accident, with their conclusions expected in July. The 35 year old American entered MotoGP, motorcycling’s elite competition, in 2003, upsetting the odds to claim the 2006 championship in one of the most entertaining seasons in recent memory, edging close friend Valentino Rossi to the title to end the Italian's five-year streak of wins Hayden, who was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, transferred to World Superbikes in 2016. He was competing for the Red Bull Honda team this season and was 13th in the riders’ standings. “The ‘Kentucky Kid’ will be sorely missed by all that ever had the pleasure of meeting him or the privilege to see him race a motorcycle around a track, be it dirt or asphalt.” said Red Bull Honda in a team statement. “As well as being a true champion on the track, Nicky was a fan favourite off it due to his kind nature, relaxed demeanour, and the huge smile he invariably carried everywhere.” The reigning MotoGP world champion, Marc Márquez, was one of the first to post
Nicky Haslam, who died after a cycling accident in Italy won the MotoGP championship in 2006, famously celebrating with his Dad
about Hayden’s death on Twitter: “Destrozado tras la noticia. Nunca te olvidaremos! / I'm shattered after the news. We will never forget you! #DEPNickyHayden #RIPNickyHayden”, He wrote. On Instagram, another Spanish MotoGP rider, Aleix Espargaró, said: “Can’t believe [it] ... The most easy and good guy I ever met on a paddock in my life! Love u Nicky!” The former Formula One driver Mark Webber described Hayden, the last American to win a MotoGP world championship, as a “beautiful person, genuine and real”. Dani Pedrosa, Hayden's team-mate in
2006 when he won the world title, posted a photo of the American on his Twitter account, writing: "Always in my heart, champ. RIP Nicky. #69." Members of Hayden’s family, including his mother and fiancee, flew to Italy last week to be by his bedside. “On behalf of the whole Hayden family and Nicky’s fiancée Jackie, I would like to thank everyone for their messages of support – it has been a great comfort to us all knowing that Nicky has touched so many people’s lives in such a positive way,” said his brother, Tommy, in a statement.

Ms Limas commented, “the council want to encourage all families to participate in the event, which we are sure will not disappoint.” Registration for the workshops is now open and can be done at www.ateneomijas.org

Drought fears increase
THE DROUGHT facing the Costa del Sol is being “aggravated” by the lack of infrastructure to import water from other areas. The underground network, which was promised ten years ago, is now said to be started in October. This is doing nothing to quash drought fears over this summer, however, with Malaga city forced to use 1.5 hectometres from La Viñuela reservoir, and 47 hectometres from Guadalhorce. Following three years of scarce winter rainfall, farmers and politicians are calling on the Junta de Andalucia to sign on off on the plans, which would see three pipelines installed. The first would run from Concepcion to Viñuela), the second from Iznajar in Cordoba and the third from and Rules in Granada. Farmers do not believe help will be forthcoming however, with the spokesman from an agricultural group in Antequera saying, “there has been much talk about a water highway, which would connect up the network from Manilva to Nerja. But there are no deadlines.” The Junta’s General Director of Planning and Management of Public Water, Juan Serrato has said there is enough water to last until the end of the summer.

Boxer Adam Machaj sees the Costa del Sol as a perfect place to train RECENTLY arrived in the Costa del Sol, heavyweight boxing hopeful Adam Machaj has high hopes of becoming a British Champion. by John Smith Born in Lancashire of Polish parents, the ‘Heat Seeker’, named after an AC/DC track which plays him into the ring, is literally a gentle giant when out of the ring but has a ferocious punch when fighting professionally. Just last week, he stopped veteran British boxer Tom Dallas - winner of more than 20 fights – in his 11th fight by stopping him in the second round of a televised bout in Bolton. The 6 foot 8 inch boxer weighs 120 kilos and has an incredible 88 inch reach but he knows that he has to be in peak form if he wants to win a title and trains twice a day in a boxing club in Marbella. The quietly spoken Adam kindly answered a few questions for RTN to give some insight to his nature and future plans. What is your greatest fear? Underachieving in whatever I do. What is your favourite food? Pasta with pesto avocado and eggs. Who would you invite for a meal dead, alive or fictional? A word to the wise when visiting Gibraltar Part Two by John Smith ONCE you have crossed the runway and reach the Compass Roundabout, you can turn right for Ocean Village with its many bars and restaurants and then Morrisons supermarket. It is said that this is one of the most profitable supermarkets in the Morrisons group attracting coach trips from the coast and large numbers of Spanish as well as expatriate visitors. To be completely truthful, it actually isn’t that big or that impressive but does stock a large number of British brands, some of which are actually cheaper in Spain than they are in Gibraltar. Special K, Toothpaste, Spanish Wine, some British chocolate, Coffee Capsules and several other items can be purchased for less in Spain but there are also many brands which are almost impossible to obtain except in Gibraltar especially the range of cheese and cooked meats. Those who are smokers and spirit drinkers will also find plenty to spend their money on but remember that there are strict limits on what you can purchase and how much you can take over the border and if stopped after 9pm with alcohol or cigarettes, even if within the approved limits they can be confiscated by the Guardia Civil. Gibraltar is a melting pot of different religions and nationalities and when you reach Main Street with its range of popular stores such as Debenhams, Swarovski and Marks and Spencer mixed with local jewellery, perfume, electrical goods and off licences you will be served by a wide range of different people. As you walk around the town, you will see locals speaking a speedy mixture of English and Spanish, Moroccans, Indians, Jews and Brits as well as a large number of Spanish visitors and workers as well as passengers from the many Cruise ships who call into the port. There are some bargains to be had if you choose carefully but these are often in last year’s models of designer sunglasses and electrical goods but in a number of the smaller shops, it is understood that you will haggle over high priced items

depending on the shop and the salesperson. It is said that there is a bar for every day of the year and there are also plenty of restaurants but eating tends to be more expensive than in Spain and for some reason the quality isn’t often as good unless you decide to visit one of the larger chains or specialist eateries such as La Sala on board the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in Ocean Village. Many of the roads leading into Main Street are incredibly narrow and if you are travelling by car you would be advised to park in a public car park and then walk the length of the
shopping road which is pedestrian only in many parts. There is a large area known as Casemates at the bottom of the road which has an open plaza surrounded by bars, cafés and restaurants and there is often entertainment in the Plaza of various types and most weekends you will be able to catch sight of the Gibraltar Regiment re-enactment parade with volunteers dressed in colourful red tunics and antique firearms parading along Main Street. In the next article, we will consider places of interest to visit as well as an overview of entertainment and beaches.

Gatwick Airport ate my passport by
Barry Duke
Decades ago I was commissioned to write an article about a disability awareness course conducted for London bus and tube staff. The speaker who made the biggest impression on those selected for the course was a disabled man who implored staff not to assume that everyone with a disability needs help. He had stopped his wheelchair in the underground to check a map. An overzealous worker, assuming he’d run out of stamina, came up from behind, grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and began pushing it forward. He abruptly stopped when the man screamed out in agony. The fingers of both his hands had become trapped in the wheel spokes, and all were fractured. Fast forward to May 15, 2017. I am using easyJet’s new-fangled DIY baggage drop at Gatwick Airport ahead of a return flight to Alicante when a staff member, wrongly assuming that I need assistance, wrenches the bag out of my hand and dumps it on the conveyor belt. In doing so, she knocks my passport out of my hand and it disappears into the conveyor belt system. When I loudly complain, she has the audacity to suggest that nothing of the sort had happened; that I had accidentally put my passport in the suitcase. A second staff member comes along to assure me that an alert has gone out, and the passport will be found. Two hours crawl by, and I am told that, because it hadn’t been found, I will be unable to fly and that my luggage will later be returned to me.
Four hours later – minutes after my flight had landed in Alicante – I am escorted to an area to retrieve the case. And here’s the kicker: they will not release it without seeing my passport! Fortunately, I have a laminated copy of it in my wallet, so reluctantly they hand it over after putting me though a rigorous security check. (Earlier, easyJet flatly refused to accept that copy as a valid travel document.) The upshot is that I am compelled to return to the home of a friend in Brighton who had put me up during my four-day business trip to the UK. Then I have to spend four hours (and £106) at HM’s Passport Office to get a replacement. Can I get one the same day? HM's computer says ‘No!”. Can I come to collect it the moment it's ready? Computer says “No! It has to be posted.” So here I disconsolately sit, gazing out of my friend Sam Pink’s window watching a bad-tempered gull
shredding a pizza box lying on a rain-soaked Brighton street, and thinking back on the lesson I was taught 30 years ago at that London Transport course: if people need help THEY WILL ASK FOR IT!. All I need now is assistance to hit easyJet with a massive compensation claim. Obviously, I won’t be getting that help from the airline itself. Only via a premium-rate telephone service can you speak to an actual human being, and the one I spoke to brushed me off with the words “put your complaint in a letter and send it to us. ”Today discovered a link to a site that tells one precisely what to do if you have an issue with easyJet or Ryanair. Visit http://tinyurl.com/lr5m866 and you'll find all the details are there, right down to instigating legal action against the companies if you don’t get the satisfaction you're seeking.

With a foot in two camps I often reflect that expatriates living on the Costas actually know little about each other. I wonder how many Costa del Sol residents visit the Costa Blanca or know where the Costa Brava is. Many Costa Blanca residents know the Sol only from coach trips taken. “If it is 3 o’clock, dear, then we must be in Fuengirola.” The recently criticised poor transport infrastructure separating the two regions has much to blame for the estrangement. As travel by train or bus is problematic I opt for the tedious but undeniably scenic car journey. Oddly, it is quicker, easier and sometimes cheaper to fly Malaga or Alicante to the UK. As for lifestyle differences I am much torn. Few question the dynamism of the Costa del Sol. The Andalucía paradise enjoys lower unemployment, offers more opportunity; it is a place where more cash changes hands. It is allegedly more expensive but that’s a tourist problem as aficionados cut their cloth according to their needs. Torrevieja it is said is the poorest city in Spain. Take that with a pinch of the salt the city is famous for. According to EU statistics Liverpool was once the Union’s poorest city. Yet, like Torrevieja, the Maritime City was rolling in cash. What money did change hands simply didn’t go through the till. Government is not the brightest tool in the box when it comes to number crunching. Whilst the N-332 is notoriously dangerous the
same flyway-highway streaming from Torremolinos to Sotogrande is a hair-raising challenge. As a onetime city cab driver I am no wimp when behind the wheel but I don’t recommend the Sol for the timid. Business interaction between the two regions appears low key. In view of much trade now being conducted over the internet this seems an anachronism. Costa Blanca and Brava communities would certainly benefit from better interaction with the Costa del Sol business community’s business acumen and drive.
Some like it hot and statistically the Blanca is warmer than the Sol and life more laid back. I recall a real estate agency advertisement that carried an image of a relaxing couple dreamily gazing out across the sleepy Mediterranean. The caption was, ‘Life in the Fast Lane.’ Now that is the Costa Blanca. In my view (sic) the landscapes and seascapes to be enjoyed on the Blanca, especially between Torrevieja and Calpe, knock spots off anything on the Sol. Now let’s talk about the Costa Brava: Where’s that?

I miss the old days when clothing and shoe sizes were exactly what they said on the label, and didn’t depend on who made them or whether they were drunk or sober when they did it. I have weird shaped feet, sort of aero dynamic and pointed – dangerous really. However my shoe size has always been nine and a half in UK terms and supposedly 44 here. But I have always found that 43 is the perfect fit for me with Spanish shoes, the equivalent of size 9. Fine on the face of it, but having purchased a pair of comfortable 43’s recently, I went back to the store during their sales and tried another pair that had caught my fancy. Good job I did. The 43’s were too large but when I tried a pair of 42’s aka size 8, a size I left behind in school days, they were far too small. And yet both pairs were made by the same Elche manufacturer. It’s the same with patterned tee shirts. I have found through trial and error that in one international Spanish chain, those made in Bangladesh or Portugal are less generous in their sizing than those made in Morocco. A Moroccan XL fits perfectly whilst the others look as if my body has been decorated by a mad tattooist. Length of leg is another issue I have, because unless my lower appendages have shrunk in the wash, the strides that I need today are a full inch shorter than the ones I previously required. But now I’m thinking, hold on. It’s inside leg measurement in the UK, and perhaps they mea-
sure it from some other location on the leg in the rest of the world. Which brings back some unsavoury memories from my younger lad-about-town days when I used a bespoke tailor for my three piece suits. I didn’t stop buying made-to-measure because I could no longer afford it, but because of the measuring process and numerous fittings. The assistant always took far too long taking my inside leg measurement for my liking, and seemed to dally around the crown jewels longer than was necessary. My patience snapped one day when he asked me for the hundredth time, which side I dressed on, and I snapped: “You’re the expert mate, you tell me” and walked out. From then on it was off-the-peg at Hepworths.

Workers care more about others when jobs are under threat Those enduring change in organisations where jobs are under threat are concerned as much about others as they are of themselves, according to a new study from a team of researchers at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). In research which analysed employee reactions to 23 change projects in a large police organisation, workers were genuinely worried about what happens to their colleagues and for the fate of the entire organisation. Gabriele Jacobs, who was part of the research team, said: ‘The reaction was totally unexpected as we were anticipating that those interviewed would want to minimise the damage to their own positions and careers. Yet only a minority of people expressed this to us. More voiced concern over what would happen to their colleagues and the organisation as a result of the organisational change.’ Big reorganisations can be fear-inducing events for employees who see their roles and career opportunities affected by new structures and ideas. That’s why managers often assume that employee behaviour – and backlash – against change is driven by self-preservation. Yet, in the study some even said they would consider the change project a failure if their colleagues suffered or if the final result was negative for the organisation at large. They were also worried about how the general public might react to the changes or how the quality of the police service might suffer. After analysing all the interviews, the researchers noticed that most employees tend to form more elaborate opinions about the effects of change than managers often anticipate. They often see various gains and losses in every change, both for themselves, for others and for the organisation. Jacobs added: ‘We observed that people want the gains and losses to be distributed fairly, according to a set of moral standards, even if the organisational changes do not affect them directly, or when the fair treatment of others comes at a personal cost. You could say people are more altruistic than earlier research has suggested.’
2017 is set to be an epic year for copper Small-cap miner scoops up big-cap territory that could lead to the biggest discovery in the world. 2017 is shaping up to be a gamechanging year for copper. With Trump's $500-billion infrastructure plan, booming Chinese demand and the recent interest rate hike from the Fed, copper prices are soaring. And for this little known small-cap miner on the verge of discovering the world's largest deposit, the timing could not be better. The place to be for copper's 2017 bull run is Chile, where Arena Minerals Inc. has gained access to one of the largest copper land packages in one of the world's hottest copper regions ever and they've got the cash, experience and local team base to do it. Not only has Arena managed to get its hands on a massive property that was a highly sought-after piece of copper territory by many major miners in the world, there's a sudden new urgency to boost mining from copper and gold to lithium - and the venue is fast becoming a foreign miner's best friend. In the meantime, while major miners like BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Glencore and Anglo American lost nearly $20 billion in core earnings as commodities plunged in 2014
and 2015, 2016 saw a turnaround and 2017 is all about the bull - here's why: China copper demand is again on a boom swing. It happened in 2004/ 2005, when Shanghai inventories rose above the London Metal Exchange (LME) inventories, which is the world's standard. A massive bull market ensued and the same thing is happening again. Trump's $500-billion infrastructure plan has already driven copper prices up and coupled with Chinese demand, this has real staying power. Continued workers' strikes at major copper mines are further boosting prices. The Fed raised key interest rates after a two-day policy meeting last week and this has weighed on the dollar and benefitted copper prices, making it one of the best stocks to add to an investor portfolio right now. The supply shortage is expected to become evident in the first half of this year, where investors could witness a repeat of the 'China boom' of 2005 or even better. Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its bullish stance on the red metal and warns of a serious supply risk which could possibly lead to an aggressive price spike.
With no other mega-projects forecast and major deposits having already been found, Arena is sitting on what appears to be the only mega-copper venue that hasn't been explored and exploited - an unheard-of achievement for a small-cap miner. All of the catalysts can only be positive for copper prices - from the potential for higher demand in the U.S. under a new administration and stronger demand from
China, to increased supply disruptions that are causing a rally right now and show no sign of abating and a lack of new copper projects forecast. The most impressive thing on the copper scene right now is Chile's unexploited copper deposits and by far the most impressive move was Arena's scooping up of big-cap territory that could lead to the biggest discovery in the world.

Baby boomers may be putting their family’s inheritance at risk Where there’s a Will, there’s a way Research carried out by Safestore has revealed that 31% of people aged 55 and over do not have a Will and as a result, may be risking inheritance for future generations. Out of 31% of adults aged 55 and over who do not have a will: • 12% have children in their household • 16% are separated or divorced • 48% admit they ‘haven’t got round’ to writing one • 18% feel that they don’t have anything of value to leave behind • 12% believe that all assets would go to a partner regardless Wills are essential life documents which really ought to be in place well before you reach 55. It is concerning that so many 55+ year-olds have not taken the time to complete one, especially where there are children or marital issues involved’ says Simon Crooks, a solicitor and specialist in tax and estate planning with Argo Life & Legacy Ltd. Without a Will you lose the opportunity to express your wishes as to what happens with your assets and who sorts it all out when you die... You get to choose the people who will manage your affairs on death and they have
power to act straight away. If you have younger children you can appoint people as Guardians to be responsible for their upbringing and welfare. One of the key benefits is spending time considering surrounding issues retirement plans, tax planning, care fee planning, policies and pensions. Not having a Will often means none of these issues have been considered which can cause problems in the future’. The results also indicate that a vast majority of people do not understand intestacy rules as without a will, if you are separated but not divorced from your spouse they are legally entitled to most, if not all of your estate. Similarly, those who are married and assume that their estate will go to their spouse are technically correct, however without a legal document in place there are numerous complications. People often think they will review their Will after a divorce is finalised - when they know what their financial position will actually be. But what happens if you die before this is sorted? You’re stuck with the Will already in place or the Intestacy Rules and your soon to be former spouse inherits some or all of your estate. It is best practice to write a new Will as soon as you can and review it when the divorce is complete.

Your living room needs a sofa table
Why should coffee tables get all the attention? Give the space behind your sofa a little decorating love with these easy tips:
PRACTICALITY Instead of matching lamps on either end of the table, offset one lamp with a vase of equal heft and size. When choosing a sofa table, be sure to keep height in mind -- a console as tall as your sofa keeps lamplight shining down on reading material and everything in arm's reach. ADDS INTEREST Add more interest and depth to your living room with a sofa table. A dark, modern style like this draws your eye in with the contrast in color from the bright white sofa. The addition of the piece also adds another layer of decoration and makes the whole room more put together and visually interesting. MAKES A ROOM INVITING A living room can sometimes feel sectioned off, but a sofa
table can act as a welcoming element to guests. Use the tabletop as display space for candy dishes or favorite books. The matching metal vases on this table add a symmetrical element to the eclectic space. EXTRA STORAGE The sofa table can be a huge bonus for storage. For extra storage, add baskets under the console to neatly store throws and extra pillows. When selecting your baskets, keep the height and width of your table in mind to ensure a proper fit. EXTRA SEATING Take full advantage of the usefulness of sofa tables, especially when it comes to hosting guests. If you are having a large gathering at your home, you are going to need all the seating you can get. Under the table is a convenient place to tuck
stools for guests to pull out when needed. DISPLAY SPACE Give yourself more places to display favorite books and accessories by adding a sofa table. Here, this living room is symmetrically balanced, and the sofa table echoes the true focal point in the center. The contrast between the rich wood finish and stark decorations helps to make the objects stand out. SPACE FILLER One of the most basic uses for sofa tables is to fill empty space. Without a sofa table, a room may have large areas that turn into dead space. Here, the additional table helps to continue the color story throughout the room and allows for more personalization with decorating.

Pot your way to fruit this year Always wanted to grow your own fruit trees, but don’t have a garden? Well, you can still have your mini orchard on a terrace, patio or balcony if you use pots to plant your trees in.
On a deck, on a patio, or even on a sliver of balcony, a dwarf fruit tree needs sunlight and almost no growing room. You can move it, although once the container is full of soil and the tree gains bulk, you may not wish to move it often. You also will want to keep the potted tree within reach of the hose for easy maintenance. Otherwise, get set for easy pickings of apples, pears, figs, or other fruit, no matter how limited your space is. Choose a tree with a balanced shape, such as a tree with four to five solid, evenly spaced branches. You may not be able to see the roots, but they are important. There should be plenty of undamaged, fine white roots (known as hair roots). The more healthy hair roots on the tree, the better the chance of transplant success because these are the tree's lifeline to nutrients and water. HOW TO POT A FRUIT TREE 1. ADD SOIL Make sure drainage holes are clear in a pot at least 18 inches wide. Add commercial planting mix with a pH of about 6.5. Firm the soil and moisten slightly as you mound it up in the middle of the pot as a base for the roots. 2. PREP TREE Tip the tree and gently work it loose from the nursery pot—don't pull it by the branches. Tease the roots apart, or use a hose to rinse the soil out of the roots. Trim off overlong or damaged roots. 3. SET TREE Use a straightedge to center the tree on the mound. Let roots drape down around the mound. The graft union of the tree should be just above your planned final soil level. Adjust the mound level until it sets correctly. 4. BACKFILL When the tree is set, fill the pot with potting soil around the roots up to the graft union. Work quickly, so the roots are exposed as briefly as possible. 5. WATER Soak the soil and let it drain. This eliminates air pockets around the roots. Add potting soil if settling occurs. Repeat. 6. ADD SUPPORT Support the young tree. A 1x1 trellis anchored in the pot works well, or use bamboo or other stakes. Loosely tie the tree to the support. Rigid tying can harm the tree. MAINTENANCE Set the pot in a sunny site out of the wind. Wind can be hard on a young tree and will dry out containers quickly. When the soil dries out to about an inch deep, water the tree thoroughly. Limit pruning to severely damaged, broken, diseased, or crossing branches. Remove a tree from its container every two or three years, and prune the roots so they do not circle around inside the container. Replace the soil with new potting mix. Then replant the tree in it. The hardest task may be waiting. For the first two or three seasons, let the tree flower, but pinch off developing fruit. If the tree bears fruit too soon, it will not establish sufficient roots and wood strength. It may grow lopsided, new branches may not develop, and the tree eventually may break.

Make your own hanging ‘kokedama’ The Japanese horticultural fashion taking Spain by storm. A kokedama is a style of Japanese bonsai, where a plant’s root system is simply wrapped in moss and bound with string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. Loosely translated, ‘koke’ means moss and ‘dama’ means ball. Becoming increasingly popular in Spain, they are perfect for exteriors and look great hung on balconies and terraces, but they can also be kept in perfect condition inside the house. Follow this step-by-step guide to make your own: The materials you will need are: a small plant of your choice, some moss, clay, string or rope and a special substrate for bonsais (akedama). To successfully make your own plant you will need to: 1. Make a compact substrate ball by mixing ¾ of moss and ¼ akadama. Add some river sand to make it stick better if required. 2. Make a small hole in the ball and insert the roots of your plant. 3. Reinforce it by tying any rope or string of your choice around the ball and start making knots around it. 4. Cut small bits of moss and put them around the ball, holding them in place with the string. The kokedama is easily kept alive by watering it a little when you see the moss getting dry. Avoid exposing it to too much sunlight or strong currents of air.
Safety tips for kids bedrooms Safety is vitally important when decorating kids bedrooms. Here are some basic tips to ensure they stay safe at all times 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Use child-proof locks or latches on lower drawers to avoid budding mountaineer turning them into climbing frames. Don’t hang heavy pictures or mirrors above the bed. Bunk beds are not the ideal option for children under the age of six. If space allows, try to use cabin beds instead which have the added advantage of extra storage. If windows are not barred on the outside, use latches that stop windows from being opened more than 10 centimetres. Avoid placing a bed underneath windows, against radiators or underneath shelves/ ledges or other things they can grab hold of or bang their heads on. Use brackets or anti-toppling devices to secure furniture to walls. Accidents often happen when free-standing items of furniture topple over on top of unsuspecting yongsters. Hide any lamp, curtain or blind cords which small fingers can easily grab hold of.

Simply Cher and Queen Celine!
So Sunday evening played host to The 2017 Billboard Music Awards, which was held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, attended by a star-studded audience and performance lineup… naturally darling! Drake was the big winner at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, In fact, the rapper took home 13 awards, making him the artist with the most in a single year beating Adele’s record of 12. I’m not going to talk about all the nominations and winners because frankly, I haven’t heard of half of them! So, here are a few major categories; Top Artist: Adele Beyonce Justin Bieber
The Chainsmokers Drake -- WINNER Ariana Grande Shawn Mendes Rihanna Twenty One Pilots The Weeknd Top Male Artist: Justin Bieber Drake -- WINNER Future Shawn Mendes The Weeknd Top Female Artist: Adele Beyonce -- WINNER Ariana Grande Rihanna Sia
OK BORED NOW… Lets move onto the good stuff! Cher has single-handedly alleviated my week with an amazing, high-energy performance at the Awards show. The legendary artist took to the to accept the Billboard Icon Award for her contribution to music. Performing both ‘Believe’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, she brought the house down while serving some of her most iconic looks ever. The vocals. The looks. The wigs. It may take several views to take in the full spectacle. Then, a moment that sent me into a state of total euphoria, last year’s Icon Award winner Celine Dion was seen getting down and dirty to ‘Believe’ while she was meant to be giving interviews in
the press room. Presenting the award to Cher, Gwen Stefani called her “truly the definition of an icon. “From the first note you know it’s her. Her artistry, her commitment to her craft and her willingness to take on new creative challenges have served as an inspiration to me in my career and she continues to inspire” Calling Cher a “trailblazer” and “a fashion trendsetter” who allows us to be true to ourselves, Stefani paid tribute to Cher’s decades of activism and humanitarian work. In her acceptance speech, Cher told the audience that being a performer has always been her dream. “I’ve wanted to do what I do since I was four years old, and
I’ve been doing it for 53 years. ” The show took place one day after Cher’s 71st birthday, which she referenced in true Cher style: “I can do a five minute plank, just saying.” Among her achievements, Cher has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and three Golden Globes. She has the remarkable distinction of having a Billboard charting single in each of the last six decades… not to mention amassing a fortune of over $350 million. Cher joins past Billboard Icon Award winners like Prince, Celine Dion, and Jennifer Lopez. P.S. Check out Celine Dion’s incredible performance at the awards show. You will see “My Heart Will Go On” in a whole new light!

The Prodigy play Costa del Sol THE PRODIGY are set to headline the Costa del Sol’s Weekend Beach Festival in Torre del Mar from 5 to 8 July. The event’s organisers have now confirmed the line-up with additional performances by Rosendo, LA, Matthias Tanzmann and The Royal Room. The festivals’ promoters have promised a few extra surprises for those attending, however. The event, which takes place on Torre del Mar’s beach, has been running every year since 2014 and sees tens of thousands of music-lovers camping out next to the sea. The festival attracts both national and international acts and plays host rock, pop, metal, fusion, reggae and hip hop music. The music event attracts young people from all over Axarquia who camp out on the beach and enjoy the music on offer. Last year, Torre del Mar’s town hall announced that the festival had attracted between €2.5 to €3 million in revenue for the area, attracting around 33,000 visitors to the event each day. This year’s budget has been increased, which has allowed infrastructure improvements to be made, while keeping ticket prices low. Tickets cost from €40 and can be bought at www.weekendbeach.es

Orchestral triumph FUENGIROLA´S Hotel IPV Palace & Spa was the setting for an extraordinary concert by Collegium Musicum´s Orchestra and Choir on Sunday.
The group joined forces with the Camerata Singers of Sotogrande, bringing together over 90 singers and 45 orchestral musicians, who performed four works. Under the baton of musical director, Annemarie Philipps, the concert started with Felix Mendelssohn´s Psalm 42, written on the composer´s honeymoon and considered to be one of his finest works. The second piece was Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No.4, an upbeat ceremonial march, which shone with the orchestra´s enhanced brass section.
The Choir, Orchestraand both soloists then performed a selection of arias and Choruses from Mendelssohn’s oratorio, “Elijah” that tells the story from the Old Testament of the contest between the prophets of Baal, the false god of the Canaanites and Elijah, who was a prophet of, Jehovah, each beseeching their God to send relief to the drought in Israel. The choirs emotional performance received praise from the audience. The close of the evening was an arrangement of part of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony which was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society of London
for £50. The last movement of this innovative masterpiece, “Ode to Joy”, has been adopted as the anthem of the European Union. The group´s next concert is next Sunday at 8pm in the Iglesia Nuestra Senora de la Merced in Sotogrande. Aries: Mars opposes Saturn and sextiles Uranus this week. The impact of this is very clear if you look at something from another angle. Take a distant look and you will find exactly what’s wrong right now and how it could simply be put right for the benefit of all concerned. Saturn is the bringer of hidden wisdom and charm, and is working on your behalf.

Code Breaker
Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 10 represents P and X represents 22, so fill in P every time the figure 10 appears and X every time the figure 22 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.
Leo: Look to your opposing sign of Aquarius to see that Uranus aligns with Mars, bringing determination, and the strong will to overcome a situation by completing that which you have not yet done. You may very well have your reasons for procrastination , but right now, out here in the real World, you have work to do and people to see, so go do it...now!
Kenny, My Mother recently died, and there is a problem with my family as they think my daughter, who is six years old, is too young to attend a formal Church funeral. What do I do? Marie M. Talk to your daughter, Marie. Does she understand what has happened to her grandmother? You can do a lot to help her to understand and some six year olds could be asked outright if they want to be there. If you can’t do this, then attend the funeral but have your daughter outside playing in the sun. Later in life she can say that she was there. Black is not the colour for mourning children, they should wear purple, but even little girls these days seem to wear black. In the end it should be your decision, and the family should listen to you as you listen to the response from your daughter.
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Reinventing yourself is not an option. The Cosmos is ever changing and your inspiration this astrological year comes from your profoundly psychic energies. Release doubt and welcome in the opportunity of a lifetime!
Sagittarius: You are being wilfully stubborn about something and have dug your heels into the sand. Though you may be very right this is not the way to go about things if you want the best of results. Ceres calls the shots on a wily and generous Jupiter who wants to reward you for a job done well, but this wont happen unless you go with the flow!
Taurus: Tread carefully as what you are doing may be the right thing, but you may not get the response or the support that you need from those around you. Somewhere along the line someone has got hold of the wrong end of the stick, and the impact of this is fuelling animosity and greed, as negative actions are being used as a smoke screen to the main event!
Virgo: The triple Mercury overlay with actions with Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto sees you ploughing into your working energies and setting things to right on the way. Your dedication is an inspiration...but you cannot hide your true emotions just by working overtime. There are solutions and being evasive serves of no good use to anyone, especially you
Gemini: With Mercury in sextile with Neptune there comes a time to pull your belt in and to take a long hard look at finances. Money may come to you but it does not appear to be supporting you by sticking around right now. Unexpected expenses there may be, but it is clear that somebody is not paying their way, and this has to be nipped in the bud now.
Libra: Look too to your opposing sign as it is your mirror image. Libra is sweet whilst Aries can be sour, so make your choice. Your loving but passive energy is in opposition to the fiery active passionate Aries, but just what is needed right now? Stop holding back with your love. Somebody who loves you has been tested enough, and action is now called for!
Aquarius: The Mars sextile with Uranus sees your planetary leader in cahoots and ready to make a plea on your behalf. There are aspects of your life you need to examine, including the taking of time for yourself, and the freedom to do what is instinctive and inspiring to yourself for a change. Others may be a shoulder to cry on, but you cry only ever on the inside.
Cancer: Starting the week with a Full Moon gives you ample time to look within yourself and to get to love what you find there inside. You are often very hard on yourself but this should be your motivation and determination, and the reason why you have been disconnected recently. Let others say what they will, their negativity is a spur in the right way!
Scorpio: The Mercury trine with Pluto is an open door to you right now! Be very unafraid to enter in because doors are meant to open, and this one leads you to just where you want to be right now. Remove any fear from the action and see the open channels of communication brought about by Mercury put to good use as you have the backing you asked for.
Pisces: Neptune sides with Mercury and suitable channels of communication are about to open for you. Will you go or will you stay? Well you cannot do both, but you are, once again, stuck in the middle and unable to make a decision. Stall for time and weigh up the pros and the cons because right now time is being called and you want the very best.
Capricorn: Beware that a simple request has something else behind it, and that someone is being manipulative with your kindness and generosity. Sometimes a no is the answer that you need to give. The Saturn opposition shows that you currently have enough irons in the fire, and whatever you do do, don’t get burned in the process; be decisive and strong!

Apocope
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
from the end of a word, In phonology, apocope is the loss (elision) of one or more sounds and especially the loss of an unstressed vowel.
We have been talking about the position of adjectives and the fact that sometimes they go in front of the noun instead of after it. That is, sometimes we say: el hombre grande (the big man) and sometimes we say (el gran hombre) which means the great man (you may choose your own example here - Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, John Lennon etc.) We have looked at why these changes in position are made and how they sometimes affect the meaning. What you will have also noticed is that sometimes when the adjective goes in front of the noun it truncates, in other words, it loses a little bit from the end. There is a great word for this – “apócope”. You can add it to your list of useless information if you like. Apocope in English means the “omission of the final sound or sounds of a word”. I find that Murcians are very prone to apocopation, as are a lot of pop singers – Americans mainly. Sorry, getting back to the point. When should we apocopate adjectives in Spanish? Here are the rules: The words “bueno” and “malo” apocopate when they appear in front of masculine singular nouns: “Un buen día” (one good, or fine, day), “el mal error” (the bad mistake). They do not apocopate in the feminine form though – “una buena idea” (a good idea); “la mala gestión” (the bad management); nor in the plural (buenos días, malos errores etc). The word “grande” apocopates in both the masculine and feminine singular in the same position. “Un gran festival” (a great festival); “una gran fiesta” (a great party). The plural goes back to “grandes” in both cases as the word “grande” does not have a separate feminine form. There is a range of other words which always apocopate before a noun in the masculine singular. Here they are: primero, tercero, alguno, ninguno, uno. “El primer hombre” (the first man). “La primera mujer” (the first woman). “El tercer capítulo” (the third chapter). “La tercera calle” (the third street). “¿Tienes algún problema?” (Have you got any (some kind of) problem?) Remember that the word “problema” is masculine. The word “algún” here intensifies the meaning, which why I’ve put “some kind of” in brackets. We could just say “¿Tienes un problema?” (which also gives us an example with “un”). “No tienen ningún derecho a hacerme esto”. (They have no right (at all) to do this to me). Again the “ningún” intensifies the meaning. We could just say “No tienen derecho a hacerme esto”. There is no apocopation with any of the plurals of these words – primeros, terceras etc. Finally, notice what happens when we have “uno” at the end of bigger numbers. For example: “¿Cúantos años tienes?” “Veintiuno” OR “Tengo VEINTIÚN años”. Since I am clearly lying, you can go up the scale guessing – “treinta y un años” “cuarenta y un años” and so on. I’ll leave that exercise to you.

Book Review
Knowing the Score – Judy Murray
“It was the day I put the tennis balls into the tumble dryer that I realised I thought about tennis a little bit differently. What happens when you find you have exceptional children? Do you panic? Put your head in the sand? Or risk everything and jump in head first?” As mother to tennis champions Jamie and Andy Murray, Scottish National Coach, coach of the Fed Cup, and general all-round cando woman of wonder, Judy Murray is the ultimate role model for believing in yourself and reaching out to ambition. As a parent, coach, leader, she is an inspiration who has revolutionised British tennis. From the soggy community courts of Dunblane to the white heat of Centre Court at Wimbledon, Judy Murray’s extraordinary memoir charts the challenges she has faced, from desperate finances and growing pains to entrenched sexism. We all need a story of ‘yes we can’ to make us believe great things are possible. This is that story. Pass the Courgetti Betty Unless you've been living on another planet for the last year or so, you will be familiar with the 'Courgette Crisis' which hit the headlines earlier in January this year. The plight of the humble baby marrow became something of a 'cause celebre' amongst healthy eaters, because it suddenly disappeared off the shelves of supermarkets. The reasons were twofold. One factor for the lack of availability were the awful December rains that hit Southern Spain, decimating the courgette crop in it's main European growing region. The other was the huge popularity the vegetable has garnered in the wake of the 'clean eating' revolution that has been sweeping across the continent. Using a handy (and quite expensive) kitchen gadget called a spiralizer, the courgette becomes a healthy eating star in the form of courgetti. Courgetti, or courgette noodles, are thin strands of courgette that can take the place of noodles or spaghetti. They need very little cooking and are the carbohydratefree way to turn dishes into substantial meals (perfect if you’re on a clean diet kick). You can cut thin slices of courgette into strips by hand, but it’s worth investing in a gadget to speed up the process. The Spiralizer, also known as the 'Spiralschneider', is the classic model, and a monument to retro design. Spare in detail, 1970s avocado in colour, but highly efficient at what it’s supposed to do. Three different cutting blades turn out spirals of ‘spaghetti’ and long curls of shaving. Courgettes, carrots and potatoes all go through easily; the handle makes turning the veg effortless. Be warned, though: the sharp blades and spikes need careful handling and washing. Now, if you're not yet ready to invest in a side winding spiralschneider (try saying that when you've has a couple of sweet sherries!), or you're not fond of the colour avocado, I have some excellent news for you. A well-known chain of Spanish Supermarkets that begin with the letter 'M', ends with the letter 'A' and has a particularly irritating theme tune. Yes, you know the one. Well, this particularly supermarket now sells, ready spiralized courgetti in the chiller counter, ready for use. That's all very good, you may say, but what should you do with your courgetti? Here's some ideas on how to cook or not cook it: BOILING: People first started cooking courgetti by lowering it into boiling salted water, because it was treated like pasta. But this method can make it turn into a soggy mess. If courgetti doesn’t fill you up, try substituting half your pasta with courgette noodles
instead. Cook your spaghetti as normal, then drop the courgette noodles into the pan right at the last minute. Cook for 30 seconds, then strain. This is a great way of lowering your carb intake. BLANCHING: The healthiest way to cook courgetti, because no fat is involved. Simply put the courgette noodles into a sieve and pour over a kettle of boiling water. This takes the rawness out the noodles without breaking them down too much. Strain well before adding pesto, sauce or toppings. FRYING: The most common way of cooking courgetti. Flash fry in a splash of oil for a minute, and no longer. You’re not cooking the courgette, just softening it. If you cook them for too long, they’ll break up and no longer look like spaghetti. RAW AND UNCOOKED: Raw courgette is a versatile ingredient, great for salads with a warm lemony dressing and some crunchy salted pistachios. Or a raw pad thai with peanuts, spiralized carrot and mooli, plus lots of lime juice.
Now here's a recipe that combines courgetti with the other food giant of clean eating, Avocado. It's simple, quick, ultra healthy and absolutely delicious. SMASHED AVOCADO COURGETTI: Smash 1/2 avocado in a pasta bowl with a fork until smoothish. Season, and add a squeeze lime. Add 1 finely chopped shallot, a handful finely chopped cherry tomatoes, 1 finely chopped red chilli and season. Mix into the avocado. Fold in spiraized courgette to the mix, so the noodles get coated in the avocado (it makes it wonderfully creamy). Serve straight away.

Gloria Ufice and Lux Mundi, there to help all THE Lux Mundi Centre in Fuengirola is a place for Ecumenical worship and somewhere for various groups of people to meet. by John Smith The centre was created in 1973 by catholic priest, Father Ramón E. Delius who saw a need for a place where people of different nationalities and Christian churches could meet and help each other. There are now two centres with a second, smaller version being opened in Torre del Mar but both with the same aims which have expanded to help the lonely and destitute as well as offering a place of worship. Gloria Ufice The Director and one of four who work full time in the selffunding operation is mother of three Gloria Ufice who was born in Bogota but has lived in Spain since 1984 and holds Spanish nationality. She originally came to Madrid with her husband to study for a degree as she was working in banking but simply fell in love with Spain and transferred to Malaga where her mother was living to complete her doctorate in economics. Living in Fuengirola, she discovered Lux Mundi and the charismatic Father Ramón whom she says “was such a wonderful man, very much committed to unity, to people, to our faith.”
We need the support of people to be able to help others, our premises are open to different local groups and our doors are open to anyone who needs help and or advice
activities outside the centre. , It is thanks to the help of their 80 volunteers in both branches that they are able to help and promote such a variety programme of activities.
Volunteers Both Gloria and her husband became volunteers at the centre and because of their commitment to the ideals of Lux Mundi and its relationship with Christian churches helping people, they were asked to open the Torre del Mar branch which they did in 1993. The president of the Board of Administration is the Bishop of Malaga and Gloria is responsible for the coordination of the work of the two branches in ecumenical, pastoral and social work. “This is a very interesting job as I enjoy planning activities, organizing ecumenical events, helping people and sharing what we are as well as keeping the finances in order and obtaining funding” she tells RTN. The two branches are open to the public from Monday to Friday and for the religious services held at Lux Mundi by different Christian churches. At the same time they promote ecumenism and unity in Malaga so are involved in many
Future hopes When asked about her hopes for the future, Gloria has a great deal to say; “Our hope and dream is to continue with our work of serving and helping others and be witnesses and testimony of unity amongst Christians. “Our practical dream is to build an ecumenical temple as the one existing in Maspalomas (Gran Canaria) to be used for different Christian churches and be the place for retreats, ecumenical meetings, prayers, service etc. “Our hope is also to touch the hearts of people to help us and to support our activities at the Fuengirola centre, where due to the amount of charitable organizations around us we notice our donors and supporters are reducing. “We need the support of people to be able to help others, our premises are open to different local groups and our doors are open to anyone who needs help and or advice. We always try to help or guide people in the right way to solve their problems but for that we need an infrastructure which is
difficult to run and finance. “At the Torre del mar Centre the dream is to have more room, it is a very active and life place but we wanted to offer in both centres other possibilities related to ecumenism.” Practical help A large number of people using their premises are pensioners so their activities are mainly for them. They help them to improve their Spanish, organise trips, quiz nights, fashion shows, concerts and lunches for them to enjoy as a family because loneliness is a big problem. In addition and in direct support of those going troubled times, Lux Mundi distributes food to local food banks, as well as supporting local charities. They started by giving sandwiches to local street dwellers but now run what the centre describes as a regular soup kitchen twice a week where on average 30 people attend for a free meal. Modestly, Gloria says “There is always someone who comes to our door asking for food, a blanket, help, advice and as I said before we do not let that person leave without an answer to their needs.”

What is the thyroid gland? The Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the front of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. It is made up of two lobes, each about the size of a plum cut in half. The two lobes lie on either side of the wind-pipe. It makes two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which are excreted into the blood. These hormones are required for all the cells in the body to work normally. In the cells and tissues of the body T4 is converted into T3. It is the T3 that is derived from T4 or excreted as T3 from the thyroid gland, which is biologically active and influences the activity of all the cells and tissues of the body.
The link between smoking and sight loss by Amrik Sappal, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola The 31st of May is World No Tobacco day and so in support of this important cause I wanted to explain the links between smoking and eye sight in the hope that it will help readers to take the decision to give up on World No Tobacco Day.
What do thyroid hormones do? The T3 which comes from the T4 and also that which is secreted directly by the thyroid gland influence the metabolism of body cells. It regulates the speed with which the body cells work. What can go wrong? Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) – not enough thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) – too much thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hypothyroidism is the most common. Thyroid disorders tend mainly to occur in women, although they can occur in anybody, even children and babies.
How is the thyroid controlled? In the brain there is a gland known as the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland senses the level of thyroid hormones in the blood and reacts by secreting a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and this hormone activates the thyroid gland to produce more T4 and T3. When the thyroid levels rise above normal the pituitary stops secreting TSH so that the thyroid stops working so hard and the production of T4 and T3 is reduced.
Common symptoms Hypothyroidism: tiredness, feeling cold, slow heart rate, constipation, weight gain, poor concentration, depression. Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, rapid heart rate, increased bowel movements or diarrhea, heat intolerance, anxiety and sometimes sore gritty eyes. Sometimes there are very few symptoms. A simple blood test at your will confirm whether you have a thyroid disorder.
What causes thyroid disorders? There are many different causes of thyroid disease but the most common cause is autoimmune thyroid disease - a self destructive process in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid cells as though they were foreign cells. In response the thyroid gland becomes either under or overactive. Thyroid disorders can run in families.
Other thyroid disorders Thyroid eye disease – this affects people with an overactive thyroid due to Graves’ disease Nodules or swelling – these lumps can stop the gland from working properly or may just be uncomfortable. Thyroid cancer – this is very rare but it is important to get a doctor to check any lumps in the neck Having a baby can sometimes trigger a thyroid disorder. This is known as post partum thyroiditis. It is usually a temporary but can return each time you have a baby.
Ask the Optician
Diagnosis Thyroid disease is easily diagnosed by a simple blood test. Treatment Most thyroid disorders are treated with medication. There are other treatments for conditions which cannot be treated with medication. If you are concerned that you have any of the symptoms then contact the Family Medical Centre to arrange to have a blood test.
Q. How can smoking affect my eyes? A. When you inhale a cigarette, approximately 4,000 chemicals enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Some of these substances cause blood vessels at the back of the eye to burst, damaging the macula and ultimately leading to loss of vision. This is known as Agerelated Macular Degeneration (AMD), smokers more than double their risk of developing AMD. Q. Can it cause any other complications with the eyes? A. Yes, smokers also have a higher likelihood of developing cataracts, impaired colour vision and dry eye syndrome. Smoking also increases your chance of getting diabetes, which can lead to blindness. Q. What can I do? A. The first thing to do is to try to quit smoking! Then go to see your optician to check your eyes are healthy and your sight is good. If your optician spots signs of any health conditions, they will refer you to a medical professional for diagnosis and treatment. You can find Specsavers Opticas in Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. Visit www.specsavers.es to make an appointment for an eye test.

Face mapping: What are your spots telling you? We’re often left baffled by a sudden outbreak of spots concentrated in one area of the face. Is it hormone-related? Did I miss my five-a-day? The ancient art of face mapping can help you identify the cause of your blemishes by splitting the face into several zones. So, what exactly do pimples on certain areas mean?
so make sure your make-up brushes and anything that you bring close to your face are kept clean. Try to reduce high blood pressure for an internal solution to clearing spots in this area. Replace 'bad' fats with more fruits, vegetables, nuts and Omega-rich fish and consult your doctor if you have any further heart-related concerns.
Zones 1 & 3: The Digestive System Chocolate and spots are a synonymous combination but, in general, high amounts of fat within your diet can lead you to breakout across your forehead. Cleanse your diet with antioxidant-rich green tea and up your water intake to clear this area.
Zones 5 & 9: Respiratory system If you're a smoker you may find that you are more prone to acne along the tops of your cheeks. However, like most people, increasing your exposure to fresh air with long and regular walks can do wonders for your complexion.
Zone 2: Liver Alcohol and dairy are said to be the main causes for spots in this area as well as reactions to food allergies. Zones 4, 6, 8 and 10: Kidneys Spots close to your ear and even dark circles around the eyes can be caused by dehydration. Make sure you keep well hydrated throughout the day and avoid coffee, tea and salt. Zone 7: Heart This area is skin is full of dilated pores
then consider a detox or adding more fibre to your diet and exercise to routine to help with digestion.
Zone 11 & 13: Hormones For many women, this zone is a key indicator of stress and hormonal imbalances particularly around a certain time of the month. While there is little to do that can prevent these changes, eating clean with plenty of exercise will do more good than bad for your complexion. Zone 12: Stomach If your diet has been loaded with rich and heavy foods
After a winter spent training under the bright neon lights of the gym, the thought of spending a couple of hours exercising in your usual sweat shop now the days are getting warmer and longer is not a very exciting prospect. Maybe it’s time to
Beauty tips Reduce skin creases by changing your pillowcase Choose a pillowcase that is soft and silky instead of coarser fabrics to decrease friction and skin compression that leaves you with extra lines in the morning. If you sleep on your side, try switching sides occasionally or sleeping on your back, so your face doesn’t wrinkle over time from pressure in certain areas. But, don’t stress about this… because ultimately, you want to be comfortable because high-quality sleep is essential for natural beauty.
Organic papaya mask Many exfoliants contain abrasive ingredients that scratch your skin which can damage your skin and speed aging. Instead, it’s better to use an enzymatic exfoliant. Papaya contains the natural enzyme papain and pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps naturally exfoliate the skin, leaving it smooth and soft. Greener (unripe) papayas have higher amounts of papain, so opt for these to get the best exfoliation. If you have sensitive skin, use ripe papayas because they’re less likely to trigger an inflammatory reaction. Scoop out a ¼ cup raw papaya flesh, mash or blend with 1 tablespoon fresh pineapple until smooth. Apply to your dry face and leave on for 5 to 15 minutes. Then rinse with cool water. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on your arm before applying to face. The alpha hydroxy acids and the enzymes in this recipe dissolve dry, dead skin. You only need to do this once or twice per week.
Men’s health
ditch the machines, racks and benches and venture outdoors into the sunshine. Your bleary eyes will find life’s better with the wind in your hair, the sun on your back, and the world zooming past. Here are two ideas to take your fitness to the next level whilst communing with nature:
MOUNTAIN BIKING For a lot of guys, mountain biking conjures up images of adrenaline junkies in full-face helmets rocketing down white-knuckled descents, then chucking themselves off cliffs. But it’s not all about speed, if you see it like skiing, where you can choose a green, blue, or black trail depending on your skill level. Mountain biking is all about leaving the road behind and exploring what’s over that next hill, or through that other valley. PROS – Apart from the downhill bits, mountain biking is low-impact and if there’s an obstruction like a large rock,
you can get off your bike, walk around it, and keep going. It’s also mentally engaging because you’re constantly looking ahead and making choices about picking a line, standing or sitting, and shifting gears. CONS - Your backside will probably hurt from rattling over roots and rocks, so stand up in the pedals when riding through obstacles to spare yourself some of the beating. CALORIES BURNED – 694 per hour. OPEN-WATER SEA SWIMMING We’ve all heard what a great fat-burning exercise swimming is, but most of it happens in the pool, where swimming endlessly back and forth, focused on lane patterns, is even more monotonous than the treadmill. Taking the swim outside lets you actually get somewhere, like across a cove, or bay andthere is a no turning back motivational element involved. Each stroke in the water works your shoulders and upper back, while pulling the water hits your lats and triceps hard. Don’t forget the hamstrings, quads, and glutes,
which are largely responsible for your kick. And, because you need to practice breath control while working major muscle groups, it’s a hell of an aerobic exercise that can leave your muscles and lungs screaming. PROS - Swimming is a full-body workout without the pounding of running or the danger of cycling with traffic. It’s a long, steady swim as you don’t get that flip turn every 25 or 50 meters where you can push off the wall and glide. CONS - You don’t have walls or lane lines to follow and you usually can’t see what’s below you, either, so the fear of the unknown is a big factor. Ocean currents and riptides can come into play depending on your local geography, so be sure to educate yourself before heading out. Get into a breathing pattern you’re comfortable with and focus on counting your strokes, which will put your mind in a meditative state as you swim. CALORIES BURNED – 694 per hour

Foods to boost your brain power
Most of us know our bodies well enough to work out when we need a boost. If we feel a little lethargic, we might reach for something sweet like a banana or chocolate bar, for a quick burst of energy. But what about when our memory needs a boost? What foods should we be including in our diet? Whilst there are lots of ways to train your brain for a better memory, there's a vast array of remedies that can be found on your plate, fridge or store cupboard. Here are ten of the best food items to include in your regular daily food planning, to give your brain a boost and help you remember where you put the shopping list! BLACKCURRANTS They might be small but blackcurrants are packed full of Vitamin C, which is thought to have the power to increase mental agility and protect against age-related brain degeneration including dementia and Alzheimer’s.
of vitamin E, so snack on them to your heart's content. OILY FISH Essential fatty acids cannot be produced by the body, so we need to include them in our diet. Oily fish like salmon, trout, mackerel and sardines are full of these essential fatty acids and regular fish eaters experience slower rates of cognitive decline as they age, according to studies. They can also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss. WHOLEGRAINS Like most parts of your body, the brain can’t function properly without energy. A steady supply of energy is best derived from glucose. To give your brain a boost opt for whole grains like “brown” cereals, breads, rice and pasta, with a low-GI which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally sharp throughout the day.
COFFEE Caffeine lovers rejoice! There’s now a good reason for your morning mug of roasted delight. Researchers from the University of Innsbruck in Austria found that giving people the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee improved memory skills and neuro signalling to the brain compared to those who consumed no caffeine. A French study found women over 65 who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were better able to recall words than women who consumed little or none.
BEETROOT Researchers at the Translational Science Center found that giving older adults a daily dose of beetroot juice helped to increase blood flow to the area of the brain associated with dementia. If that drink doesn’t tickle your fancy, try adding roasted or pickled beetroot to a salad or sandwich.
NUTS A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests that consuming vitamin E can help prevent cognitive decline, particularly in the elderly. Nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, are an excellent source
Researchers found that broccoli is also high in glucosinolates, which can slow the breakdown of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, which we need for the central nervous system to perform properly and keep our memories sharp.
BLUEBERRIES A study from Tufts University in the US found that the consumption of blueberries can be effective in improving or delaying short term memory loss. STRAWBERRIES Not to be outdone in the berry department, strawberries are also excellent for the brain. A 2012 Harvard study found that women who ate at least one cup of strawberries and blueberries per week experienced a two and half year delay in mental decline compared to women who rarely consumed them. CAPERS These salty little gems not only give your meal a tasty kick, they also boost your brain power. Capers are said to contain high levels of quercetin, a chemical which stimulates memory by improving blood flow to the brain. Tartare sauce anyone?
BROCCOLI A 2015 US study found that vitamin K, can enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower and broccoli is full of it

Lightweight versions of your favourite apps With an eye towards the developing world where people are more likely to own cheap phones and have unreliable wireless data access, the big names in tech are developing simpler versions of their apps. These apps are lightweight, use little data and don’t burn through battery life.
Switching to a ‘lite’ app means you’ll have to do without some of the visual polish and fancy features, but you may well consider the trade-off worth it for the improved battery life alone. These apps are also useful for travelling abroad, when you might want to keep data usage down to a minimum or can’t rely on a phone signal. Facebook Lite Facebook Lite is aimed at developing nations with developing telecom infrastructure, so you won’t be able to install it straight from the Google Play store. To get around this, open Settings in Android, tap Security, then toggle the Unknown sources switch On. Download the latest Facebook Lite package from APK Mirror, then transfer it over to your phone (via email, Dropbox, or your method of choice). Run the file, tap through the security warnings and you’re up and running. You won’t notice all that much difference in what Facebook Lite can do, but the whole app is quicker and lighter. Unlike the main app, the Messenger part of Facebook Lite is built into the same interface. If you just want the Messenger experience on its own, that’s available too and can be loaded in the same way. iPhone users have no Lite option, though you can opt to use the Facebook mobile site.
Skype Lite Built specifically for India, Skype Lite is like Facebook Lite in that it’s listed on the Google Play store but not available to download in Spain. Follow the instructions above for enabling apps from ‘unknown sources,’ then download the Skype Lite app from APK Mirror. As with Facebook, this is an Android-only deal, so those of you on iOS will have to make do with the full-fat Skype. Skype Lite is easy on your battery and other system resources and doesn’t drain your data too much, considering it’s a video calling app. Usefully, the app tells you how much data you’ve used. Twitter Lite Twitter Lite is an official product, aimed at developing nations, but it’s not an app—it’s the mobile Twitter website, engineered to be as efficient as possible. Anyone can use it by heading to mobile.twitter.com. The same familiar Twitter interface shows up, with a slightly cleaner look, and access to your DMs and notifications as usual. Compared to the full experience, Twitter Lite caches more of your timeline, for an improved offline experience. To cut down on data usage, even more, tap your avatar then turn on Data saver. Instagram Lite As with Twitter, you can load up a slimmeddown version of Instagram on the web, which recently added photo upload capabilities if you’re browsing from a mobile device. Point your mobile browser of choice at www. instagram.com, log in with your credentials, and your feed appears.
APP OF THE WEEK: ‘SHAPR’ Category: Networking Shapr is an app that takes a new approach to professional networking. Using a smart algorithm, Shapr provides 10-15 profiles of other professionals nearby with similar interests to be evaluated daily. Much like the popular dating app, Tinder, users swipe left or right to indicate if they would like to connect with the individual. Once two individuals both swipe right on each other’s profile, they can message to connect over coffee in person. ‘Networking gets a bad reputation,’ said Ludovic Huraux, CEO and Co-Founder of Shapr. ‘It is often viewed as an exhausting experience that requires a tremendous amount of time and energy to build meaningful relationships. Shapr makes networking simple by introducing you to likeminded professionals that are nearby and are also interested in expanding their networks. Our goal at Shapr is to make networking so seamless and inspiring that it becomes a lifestyle.’ Shapr is very focused on being a professional networking app that opens new possibilities for its users. That being said, they have moderators and flagging features to ensure that anyone pursuing unprofessional interests such as dating or selling are reported. ‘At Shapr, we promote a mindful way of networking,’ said Huraux. ‘Our goal is not to get your business cards into the hands of as many people as possible. Our goal is to spark mutually beneficial conversations that evolve into long-term relationships. We ask users to report anyone who tries to hard sell a service or a product through the app.’ Bottom line: Networking has clearly continued to evolve over time as tools make it easier and more efficient to create meaningful relationships. Shapr has made connecting for mutual interest far easier. Shapr is available for iOS and Android

Tech Should it stay or should it go? Facebook moderators have just ten seconds to make a decision Leaked Facebook documents show how the social media company moderates issues such as hate speech, terrorism, pornography and self-harm on its platform, the UK’s Guardian newspaper reported, citing internal guidelines seen by the newspaper. New challenges such as ‘revenge porn’ have overwhelmed Facebook’s moderators who often have just ten seconds to make a decision, the Guardian said. Moderators review more than 6.5 million reports of potentially fake accounts a week, the newspaper added. Many of the company’s content moderators have concerns about the inconsistency and peculiar nature of some of the policies. Those on sexual content, for example, are said to be the most complex and confusing, the Guardian said. Facebook had no specific comment on the report but said safety was its overriding concern. ‘Keeping people on Facebook safe is the most important thing we do. We work hard to make Facebook as safe as possible while enabling free speech. This requires a lot of thought into detailed and often tough questions and getting it right is something we take very seriously’, Facebook’s Head of Global Policy Management Monica Bickert said in a statement. Facebook confirmed that it was using software to intercept graphic content before it went on the website, but it was still in its initial stages. The leaked documents included internal training manuals, spreadsheets and flowcharts, the Guardian said. The newspaper gave the example of Facebook policy that allowed people to live-stream attempts to self-harm because it ‘doesn’t want to censor or punish people in distress.’ Facebook moderators were recently told to ‘escalate’ to senior managers any content related to the Netflix original drama series ‘13 Reasons Why,’ based on the suicide of a high school student, because it feared inspiration of copycat behaviour, the Guardian reported.

A man in Texas is reportedly suing a woman for texting during their date at a cinema. A U.S. news site recently reported that 37-year-old Brandon Vezmar wants a $17.31 (€15.41) settlement, which was the price of the ticket to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. ‘It was kind of a first date from hell,’ he said, after they met online. The woman, 35, who didn’t want to be named, insisted she
didn’t know about the claim and that it was ‘crazy’. Brandon claims that after around 15 minutes she started texting on her phone, which was one of his ‘biggest pet peeves’. In the court papers filed in the small claims court in Travis County, he apparently claims she did it ‘at least 10-20 times in 15 minutes’. After asking her to do it outside, she apparently left the cinema and didn’t come back.

5 Factual recall (note this is very general, covers many aspects of factual recall, also that ‘facts’ recalled may not necessarily be true, and also note that a single isolated indicator is not reliable 6 Within a few seconds (and often these first impressions become quite firm and difficult to alter, even if they are very wrong) 7 Proxemics (Based on the word proximity) 8 Charles Darwin 9 Very significant 10 Desire/attraction (note this is very general, and also note that a single isolated indicator is not reliable - see the body language guide for more details)

Get the message and slow down Redhill-based signage specialists Messagemaker has unveiled two new LED signs which will be used to improve road safety and reduce traffic speed. The introduction of the new signs follows statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) which showed that 24% of all UK traffic accidents were as a result of speeding. Messagemaker, part of the Stocksigns Group, has over twenty years of experience with standard and specialist LED displays. They have supplied bespoke signs to Barclays, Williams F1, London Heathrow, Gatwick Airport, Excel, Tesco, Selfridges and many more. The new Speed Awareness Message (SAM) and Speed Limit Reminder (SLR) systems, built in the UK, are mounted to road-side posts and alert motorists who are speeding excessively. The SAM systems work by telling a driver the speed they are doing and warning them to slow down. The SLR signs display the speed the motorist should be travelling. By alerting drivers to the speed they are travelling, they will help improve safety and reduce road traffic accidents. In a study by WHO, it was found that an adult hit by a vehicle travelling below 50 kilometres per hour had an 80% chance of surviving the collision. In comparison, if a vehicle hit an adult at 80 kilometres per hour, there was a 60% likelihood of death. The same study also showed that a 1 kilometre per hour increase in speed would result in a 4 – 5 % higher risk of death. At the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Road Safety Conference, a study presented by Professor Alan Tapp for Bristol City Council, looked into the introduction of 20 mph zones and limits for roads in Great Britain. Over two years (2013 and 2015), YouGov interviewed a total of 6,110 people and found that 65% supported 20 mph limits in residential areas. LED road signs, such as SAM and SLR, provide cost-effective alternatives to constructing new road layouts or introducing speed cameras. They can be adapted to different post sizes and run on batteries which can be teamed with a solar panel. The versatility and simplicity of the signs allow them to be moved easily, for example a local council may have reduced traffic speeds in one street and want to alert drivers on another route. The sign can be taken down quickly and placed in its new location without having to block traffic or change power supply. Messagemaker’sLED expert Nigel Parke said, “Our new signs are fully weatherproof and can be used to capture vehicle data. Both signs use high visibility displays so drivers can see the warning 100 metres ahead of their location. They can be used on different mounting points, such as lampposts and road signs, and the desired warning speed can be set up quickly. For a more permanent solution they can run off mains power.” Messagemaker, and its sister company Stocksigns, has worked closely with RoSPA to improve Health and Safety standards in the workplace, on the road and in the home.
Penalty point reporting scandal Nearly a quarter (23%) of motorists did not inform their insurer the last time they received penalty points on their licence, research conducted by RAC Insurance has found. As many as 2.8m drivers have points on their licences which means around 654,158 drivers may be putting themselves at risk of their insurance policy being declared invalid should their insurer discover the information they have on record is not true. The problem could, however, be far greater as 18% of those surveyed said they would not inform their insurer if they were to receive penalty points – this equates to nearly 7m of Britain’s 38.5m full driving licence holders. RAC Insurance director Mark Godfrey said: “It is the duty of every driver to inform their insurer of any circumstance that might affect the contract they have with them, both during the insurance term and at renewal. This includes making sure every piece of information they provide when completing an insurance application is correct. “Not declaring penalty points is a serious matter as it puts drivers at risk of holding invalid insurance as well as potentially incurring substantial penalties from the police, or even a prosecution. The onus is always on the person taking out an insurance policy to make any incident known that could influence an underwriter in calculating a premium, even if they are not requested to provide such
information. This could be a previous claim, a criminal or motoring conviction. “If someone who had not told their insurer about receiving penalty points were to be involved in an accident they may be given additional penalty points, an unlimited fine and/or be disqualified from driving. The police could even seize and potentially destroy the uninsured vehicle.” The RAC Insurance research also found that one in 10 (10%) of those surveyed claimed to know of someone who had incurred penalty points themselves and then got their partner to take them instead – an offence which was highlighted in the national media in 2013 when former Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne was jailed for perverting the course of justice as a result of getting his ex-wife Vicky Pryce to take his penalty points which would have caused him to be banned from driving. While more than half (52%) questioned by RAC Insurance claim not to have had any points on their licences for over 21 years, of those that did nine in 10 (90%) said they had acquired theirs as a result of speeding. Although motorists can be given penalty points for a variety of offences, speeding tends to be the one which leads to the most points being added to UK driving licences. This is no doubt due to the use of speed cameras,
particularly as Government statistics for 2015 show that since 2010 there has been a 27% drop in the number of full-time roads policing officers in England and Wales from 5,338 to 3,901 – or 1,437 fewer officers. Mark Godfrey added: “The findings of our research are worrying. Motorists either don’t realise or forget that they need to inform their insurer whenever they receive penalty points, or – worse still – are intentionally not telling them in order to keep their insurance premiums lower. “While not realising or forgetting may sound better, the consequences are just as severe as if you deliberately hid penalty points from an insurer. The best advice with insurance is always to be completely open and honest – that way your policy will be there to protect you when you need it.”

Driven by humans...parked by robots There is no doubt that airport parking can be a significant source of grief on holidays and business trips. As well as being expensive, upon your return you’re guaranteed to forget which zone you parked in, and there’s always a chance that a careless holidaymaker or an overzealous valet parking employee will have dinged your door while you’ve been away. It’s the stuff of nightmares. Fortunately, the team at Stanley Robotics has come up with a solution that could consign all of that to history. Their robot - affectionately named Stan – automatically collects cars from designated drop-off areas and transports them to the nearest car park until owners are ready to reclaim their vehicles. The process begins when customers make a booking via the company’s app or website, before parking in a “well lit and spacious” garage close to their terminal. Then once they’ve confirmed their arrival on the accompanying touchscreen, they’re free to leave for their flight, taking their keys with them. At this point, Stan will step in to collect deposited vehicles, automatically adjusting to each car’s dimensions as it slides underneath and gently lifts the car off the ground. Then, when it has reached the airport’s car park, it uses “the latest sensor technology” to precisely manoeuvre vehicles into rows of five. The system is being touted as a money-saver for airports, with Stanley Robotics claiming that it can increase the number of cars in a given area by as much as 50 per cent. They also point out that operating costs would plummet without the need for regular cleaning and maintenance. The fully electric system is advertised as a zero-emissions solution, and while they neglect to mention where the electricity may be generated, each robot is said to be capable of processing between 20,000 and 30,000 vehicles per year, managing up to 400 parking spaces at any one time. The system’s final party trick is that each booking contains a record of customers’ flight details, meaning that cars can be returned to the easy-access drop-off point in anticipation of their owners’ return. Stanley Robotics’ valet solution is already in operation at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, and having recently secured millions of pounds in investment, there’s every chance it could become a more common feature at airports across the globe in the very near future.

Rugby victory Bowled over for Spanish club LA POSADA´S bowls club have completed a competitive tour of the Algarve.
EL TORO Rugby Club have earned the right to try for promotion to the next league after being crowned champions at the Baleares Senior League. The team, from Calvia, Mallorca, won against visitors, Quebrantahuesos RFC; winners of the Aragon Senior League. A try scored in the first few minutes gave the visiting team a psychological advantage. The home team crept ahead though, gaining 11 points to eight by half time. The Quebrantahuesos kept the pressure on throughout the even-tempered, but hard-fought match, but El Toro managed to pull even further ahead in the second half, ending the match at 23 points to 14. The win gives El Toro a slight advantage in this week´s return game, which is sure to be a tough one. The match takes place tomorrow in Son Caliu, kicking off at 4pm. In other rugby news, The Virgins have become the first Argentinian rugby team to visit Mallorca, playing The Barbarians; a group of veteran players from across the island´s teams. The Virgins, who are based in Tucuman Province, who have a long history, welcomed veteran Mallorquin players in November last year.
Swedish match fixing It appears that match fixing is endemic throughout all levels of sport in all countries, after a game in the Swedish top level was cancelled over allegations of corruption. The Swedish top-flight fixture between Gothenburg and AIK has been postponed after an alleged match-fixing attempt. The Swedish Football Association claims an AIK player was "offered a considerable sum" if he contributed to losing Thursday's Allsvenskan game. General secretary Hakan Sjostrand described it as a "very serious attack against Swedish football", adding: "We will never let this happen."Police in Sweden have started an investigation into the allegation. "It is ultimately not about a single match, therefore it is important we act forcefully," added Sjostrand. "The starting point for all of our games is that they are safe and settled on sporting grounds. Based on the information we have, we cannot guarantee that."The two sides have played eight games in the Allsvenskan this season, with AIK sixth in the 16-team table, five places above Gothenburg. Radio Sweden's Spenser Bomholt, speaking to BBC World Sport Today: "This has been the first instance of alleged match-fixing in the top league level that we have heard about - it has happened quite a bit in lower league football and in basketball. In 2016, the Superettan [second tier] had 43 instances of players participating in match-fixing, but for it to rise to this level is really quite surprising. "The secretary general of the Swedish Football Federation say they have worked hard to educate players about what to do if they find themselves in this situation, and that's one of the reasons this was nipped in the bud."
Based in Praia da Rocha, near Portimao, the group played four matches against local Clubs. Kicking off against Tavira B.C., the team lost all six rinks, playing on a grass green they were unused to. Not dampening their spirits however, La Posada say they had a great morning´s bowling, against a friendly team, followed by an excellent lunch. Faring better in their next match, against Alvor B.C., again on a grass green, La Posada won one rink, losing the other five, but with higher scores than in their previous match. The two clubs spent an enjoyable afternoon having a barbeque together. Their third match in Almancil against Valverde B.C. Playing on another grass green, La Posada showed signs of improvement, wining two out of the six rinks, before enjoying a team lunch. The team´s final match saw them battle Floresta B.C. in Praia da Luz. Back on a carpet surface, the team fared better, wining two rinks, and drawing one out of the six played. La Posada were impressed with Floresta´s glass-like surface, commenting it was even smoother than their home green, with 26 bowls ending up in the ditch. The week´s highlight was a presentation evening at a country restaurant. The food kept coming and the wine flowed freely, with the team singing and dancing until the early hours. Smooth surface: the team at Floresta Bowls Club.
First class cricket CRICKET is slowing making a renaissance on the Costa del Sol, following the recent Telegraph tournament at Malaga´s Cartama Oval. The Rock XI Gibraltar CC was crowned champion, seeing off competition from Wandsworth Cowboys Cricket Club and the Costa del Sol Crusaders. The tournament kicked off with a match between Wandsworth CCC and the Crusaders, with the former scoring 106-3. Despite the best efforts of batsmen Paul Gibbs, Antonio Magro, Brian Barret and Nasir Dar, the Crusaders were ultimately victorious, beating Wandsworth by four wickets. Man of the match was Brian Barrett with a total score of 20. The Crusaders´ winning streak was not to last, however, after they lost by five wickets to Rock XI Gibraltar CC. The Costa del Sol Crusaders scored 116-7, with Lee Rickwood, Andrew Ward, Morgan Peters and Avinash Balaji Pai batting, the last of whom was named man of the match. The Rock´s win led them to a further victory, this time playing Wandsworth CCC, and beating them by nine wickets. The Wansdworth Cowboy´s Morgan Peters was named man of the match after scoring 5-5. Special praise was reserved for the team´s Antonio Magro, however, who won man of the tournament. The next day, Malaga CC played the Crusaders, winning by 42 runs, with a spectacular century from Riaz Ahmed.

Real Madrid donate La Liga trophy to the city After five barren years Real Madrid won their first La Liga trophy since 2012, when they beat Malaga 2-0 at the Rosaleda stadium in the Andalucian capital. Only needing a draw to seal the title, a goal after two minutes, from Christiano Ronaldo settled the away side’s nerves before a second half goal from Karim Benzema sealed the victory that sent the Galacticos fans wild. Last Monday, on the day after winning the 33rd league title in Malaga, the party continued at the head offices of The Community of Madrid and the Town Hall. The squad and coaching team, along with Florentino Pérez and the Board of Directors, left the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and went first to the Palacio de Cibeles, the head offices of The Community of Madrid. Madrid Mayor, Manuela Carmena, welcomed the team and congratulated them: “Since you are so amazing, we didn’t expect anything less from you, we were hoping you would win. We love you, it’s an honour for Madrid to have this team” Chairman Florentino Pérez called the victory historic “This is our 33rd league title, no one has more, and we are proud to have achieved it together and united.” “This team has shown that it is the best in terms of the unity and mutual understanding, and with a relentless enthusiasm from the fans that has spurred us on from the first minute to the last.” Said Perez. “Thank you very much for your affection and for welcoming us to share this triumph in the home of all the people of Madrid and in front of all our friends the madridistas” The champions then travelled to the Real Casa de Correos, head offices of The Community of Madrid. After an exchange of gifts, President Cristina Cifuentes, welcomed the contingent saying: “This is your home and we open the doors with a lot of affection because we are celebrating a very important new triumph for who undoubtedly is the best team in the world, that’s why you are a team of champions”. Diving bans to be introduced next season Players who dive in English football will face bans from next season under new Football Association regulations. Under the new rules, passed by the governing body at its annual general meeting on Thursday, a panel will review footage each Monday looking for cases of simulation. Any player unanimously found guilty of diving would be given a suspension. The FA also announced it has passed reforms it proposed in March, following criticism over the way it is run.The FA defines the new offence for which players will be punished as “successful deception of a match official”. Only incidents that result in a player winning a penalty or lead to an opponent being sent off - through either a direct red card or two yellow cards - will be punished. The FA says it will act “where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player’s team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed”.Its panel will consist of one former match official, one ex-manager and one ex-player. The announcement follows what the FA said was “a period of consultation with stakeholders over the past few months”. The rule change also required approval from the Premier League, the EFL and the Professional Footballers’ Association.Speaking in December, Burnley manager Sean
Dyche said he thought diving would be eradicated from football “in six months” if retrospective bans were introduced. Such bans have been utilised in Scottish football since 2011. The Scottish Football Association compliance officer - Tony McGlennan - reviews incidents in matches and determines whether or not notices of complaint should be raised. If a player is deemed to have dived during a game and the match officials did not recognise that at the time, the player will be issued with a disciplinary notice. The player can then either acknowledge guilt and accept the punishment offered
by the compliance officer, or appeal. If it is the latter, a hearing is convened with an independent three-man panel - including people from legal and football backgrounds - who consider the case made by the compliance officer and the player before making a ruling.Sports Minister Tracey Crouch had said the FA could lose £30m-£40m of public funding if it did not modernise. In March, the FA announced proposed reforms to: Establish three positions on the FA board reserved for female members by 2018; Reduce the size of the board to 10 members; Add 11 new members to the FA Council so it “better reflects the inclusive and diverse nature of English football”; Limit board membership to three periods of three years; Introduce term limits for FA Council membership. These were passed after a vote by shareholders at Thursday’s annual general meeting, having already been approved by the FA Council in April. “I’m absolutely delighted the FA has understood the importance of good governance and implemented these reforms,” Crouch said. The proposals were criticised for not going far enough when first announced in March. Lord Herman Ouseley, the chairman of anti-racism group Kick It Out, said he had “no confidence in the FA’s proposals” and described the reforms as a “sham”. He added certain minority groups would continue to be under-represented, and that “by prioritising women on boards, all other protected groups are being left behind”.
