Event to focus on high-end market. by Jimmy Grayling MARBELLA is set to reinforce its position as the Costa del Sol’s first city of glitz this weekend as the dazzling Luxury Weekend takes place from today (Friday) until Sunday. It comes after the closure of the Cannes Festival in France, with councillors eager to ensure the annual event becomes an international reference for the luxury sector, according to tourism delegate Javier Porcuna. City Hall has handed the majority of organisation to local businessmen, who have arranged a Luxury Forum at the Goya Theatre, where 16 personalities and high-level professionals will discuss challenges facing the luxury sector. It comes as Marbella cemented its lofty position among the Spanish and international elite, ranking second in the country for the sector in 2016 behind Barcelona and ahead of Madrid, contributing 26 per cent of sales. The glam city also contributes a staggering 98 per cent of tax contributions from non-EU foreigners in Andalucia. According to businessman Miguel Gomez, Marbella Luxury Weekend is “an economic impulse and milestone aimed at promoting Marbella as a tourist destination at a time when the city is becoming the epicentre of luxury in Spain.” He went on to explain how the timing of the event was chosen to take advantage of the concentration of millionaires and celebrities attending Cannes, hoping that many will choose to extend their stay in Europe and “go shopping” in Marbella. “For the first time in the world, four Michelin-starred chefs will offer a three day ‘ephemeral’ menu, a gastronomic milestone,” enthused Gomez. Fashion will also feature heavily with national debuts for new collections by designer Franco Pianegonda and the Mattioli and Stenzhorn brands, which will be displayed on Europe’s only floating catwalk. The first belt buckle made from high-tech ceramic will be given its world premiere, as will artworks by Swiss luminary Gaby Worman and a watch paying tribute to David Bowie by Raymond Weil. The opulence will be backed by entertainment including live music and the chance for VIPs to whizz above Puerto Banus in a helicopter, while Legras champagne, voted the best in the world by Forbes magazine, will be served throughout the three days. A full programme is available at http://www.marbellaluxuryweekend.com/en/.

Helping to relieve the pain by John Smith LAST WEDNESDAY the DEBRA-Butterfly Children Charity celebrated the first anniversary of its charity bench situated at the peak of La Concha at 1215 metres. The idea for the bench came from local Marbella fireman José Pérez Bellido who wanted to give visibility to Butterfly Skin whilst at the same time offering a place for visitors who had climber the mountain to rest and take in the views. In 2016, José saw his dream become a reality. Since then hundreds of visitors have made use of the bench and shared their selfies with the hashtags #BancSolidario and @pieldemariposa to create awareness of the cause. To pay tribute to all the Butterfly Children families who, on a daily basis face challenges much bigger than mountains, a group of special individuals set off intent on reaching the peak. The Mayor of Marbella, José Bernal, was present at the Fire Station for the departure of the expedition. He praised the firemen of Marbella for the work they do within the city and congratulated them for the support they have given to sufferers. The highlight of the expedition was when a helicopter provided by World Aviation Helicopters circled the bench with Adrian Soto, a 12 year old boy with Butterfly Skin on board. For Adrian and the many others suffering from the condition climbing a mountain is

only a dream because the journey on foot or being carried would cause serious blisters and extreme pain. Butterfly Skin is a rare, painful and incurable disease that causes extreme fragility of the skin. From the moment a baby is born with the condition they have blisters and wounds all over their body.

Pamela Anderson sets pulses racing

by Staff Reporter THE stars were out in force for the opening of glitzy new beach club Playa Padre in Marbella. Guest of honour was former Baywatch star and philanthropist Pamela Anderson, who turned heads in a long nude gown. She was joined by Spanish actress and Marbella resident Maria Bravo, whose Global Gift charitable foundation is set to benefit from the

party venue’s takings. After the two stars had snipped the red tape to officially open the venue, they posed for photos in front of the waiting press before Maria whipped out her smartphone for some impromptu selfies. Other celebs in attendance included ex-Made In Chelsea beauty Ashley James who played a guest DJ set alongside fellow TV personality Charlotte de Carle. The two 30-year-olds whipped up

a party storm before Pamela relived her years on 90s hit series Baywatch by taking a dip in the Mediterranean while wearing her long gown. The 49-year-old stunner certainly seemed to enjoy her evening in Marbella, which has set the stage for a star-studded summer in the glam capital of the Costa del Sol.

€120,000 for grants FUENGIROLA’S Council has announced it last year gave away over one hundred thousand euros in funding for the town’s neediest families. Activities covered by the programme included sports, cultural initiatives, workshops, summer schools and help for the disabled. The town’s Councillor for Social Services, Francisco Jose Martin, commented, "in Fuengirola we have been helping families at their most vulnerable moments for over 20 years through a series of grants to help both parents and children take part in council-run activities which they could not afford themselves.” He added, "in 2007 it was decided to unify all the scholarships offered by our various councils and create a municipal scholarship programme.” He said the scheme would continue, "as long as necessary; we will continue to submit these types of programs to help residents take part in various activities, as well as helping the disabled.” Martin concluded, "all those wanting to apply for these grants can do so through the council within the relevant registration period, and social workers, or in some cases, schools will assess a family’s need and hand over the relevant amount.”

Politicians demand police increase by Sally Underwood POLITICIANS from Ciudadanos and the Partido Popular in Mijas have discussed increasing police presence following a hike in crime figures. While crime in Malaga province has shown a small increase, Mijas has bucked the trend, with figures going up by as much as 77% in home burglaries. In the first quarter of 2016, 1,077 crimes were committed in the town, whereas in the first three months of this year, that figure increased by 12.6% to 1,213. Thefts saw the biggest rise, with burglaries of shops and commercial premises up by 75% and 16% in robberies. Home burglaries sky rocketed from 88 in the first three months of last year, to 156 this year. The Partido Popular claim “sparse police presence,” as well as the “questionable direction,” of the Local Police are to blame. They have now called for more officers to patrol the streets, and for a re-think of how resources are used, saying there had

been, “ample examples over the last two years of (the police’s) manifest inability to manage their human resources,” adding, “unfortunately this burglary boom, mainly in housing developments, give the Partido Popular cause for concern for the security of our residents and tourists.” According to popular sources, the "little police presence" in the streets of the municipality because of the accumulation of holidays, as well as the "questionable direction of the body", have been the causes of these worrying data. "These show once again the little concern for the security of the citizens of the current municipal leaders as well as the direction of the Local Police," they added. Mijas’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, says the Local Police received too much criticism for the crime increase, saying the responsibility instead lay with the National Police, commenting, “the law makes it clear what their powers are, and robberies to do not fall under the remit of the council.”

Council repay €1288 in falsely claimed tax

A COUNCIL on the Costa del Sol has returned over a thousand euros in capital gains tax which it improperly collected from a resident who had transferred his home to his ex-girlfriend. The man had bought the property in Velez Malaga 2009 with his then-girlfriend. When the couple split up a year later, the girl continued to live in it and took over the mortgage. In 2015, the man applied to the bank to have the property transferred to his ex-girlfriend’s name and was astonished to receive a bill for capital gains tax a year later. The man paid the amount, but appealed it at a local court, which rejected his claim. The council has now decided to repay the amount, plus interest. A spokesman for the town hall said it made the decision "since the transfer was not subject to the tax on the increase in the value of urban land". The man has since commented, "I neither sold nor had an equity increase. On the contrary, it cost me €2,300 in paperwork."

YouGov projects May could lose majority in June election by Tahnee Wright British Prime Minister Theresa May could lose control of parliament in Britain's June 8 election, according to a projection by opinion polling company YouGov, raising the possibility of a political standoff just as formal Brexit talks are set to begin. In contrast to opinion polls that have, until the past week, shown May on course for a big win in the snap election she called, the YouGov model suggested May could lose 20 seats and her 17-seat working majority in the 650-seat British parliament. The YouGov constituency projection, based on 50,000 interviews over the course of a week, showed May would win 310 seats, down from the 331 seats won by her predecessor David Cameron in 2015. The projection showed opposition Labour Party would win 257 seats, up from

232 seats in 2015. Smaller parties, including the Scottish National Party and Northern Irish parties, could win 83 seats, The Times newspaper quoted YouGov as predicting. If the YouGov model turns out to be accurate, May would be well short of the 326 seats needed to form a government in June, when formal Brexit negotiations are set to begin. May called the snap election in a bid to strengthen her hand in negotiations on Britain's exit from the European Union, to win more time to deal with the impact of the divorce and to strengthen her grip on the Conservative Party. But if she does not beat the 12-seat majority Cameron won in 2015, her electoral gamble will have failed and her authority could be undermined just as she tries to deliver what she has told voters will be a successful Brexit.

Two taken into custody for impersonating driving test candidate TWO men who attempted to take driving tests in another candidate's name were arrested on the Costa Brava last week. The first man was caught on Thursday in Sant Joan les Fonts, Girona when he produced his ID before taking the practical test and officers discovered it to be fake. He was arrested, but the next day – Friday – a second man claiming to be the 'real' candidate arrived to take the exam and was also arrested. Police say the second man was planning to take the test on behalf of his brother, who is 14 years older than him. Substituting candidates in an exam is a criminal offence in Spain. Both men have been released with charges.

30 migrants rescued from burning boat off Spanish coast A group of 30 migrants were rescued off the coast of Spain after their rubber speed boat caught fire forcing them to jump into the sea. The fire erupted at the back near the engine before spreading rapidly to the rest of the boat. The scene was captured by the Portuguese air force plane helping Frontex with maritime surveillance, which threw them a small lifeboat and notified Spanish coastguards. The Spanish coastguards later dispatched a helicopter and several other rescue boats to the scene. The migrants, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were finally taken safe and sound to the port of Motril in southern Spain.

14 arrested and doping stash seized Spanish police raided 25 homes, warehouses and gyms and arrested 14 people accused of belonging to a network manufacturing and trafficking performance-enhancing drugs, the interior ministry said earlier this week. 3 million doses of 120 different substances, including anabolic steroids and hormones and active and inert drug-making ingredients and equipment were seized. The operation took place in Alicante, Malaga, Valencia and Valladolid and began in October 2016 after police detected a wholesale distribution network of manufactured drugs and ingredients originating mainly in China and India. During the raids, substantial amounts of base ingredients and drug-making equipment were uncovered, suggesting at least part of the network was responsible for the manufacturing of homemade drugs, the ministry said.

€477,126 in compensation for paralysed girl THE SUPREME Court of Justice of Andalucia has ruled the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) and company Zurich must pay almost half a million euros for failing to properly treat a pregnant woman on the Costa del Sol in 2011. by Sally Underwood The woman, who was suffering from diabetes, was not properly assessed at her 36 and 38 week scans, according to the ruling, with doctors failing to measure the circumference of her bump and therefore missing that her child had grown to the unusual weight of 5 kilos. The judge claims this constituted a “clear infraction during the ultrasound process.” When the woman gave birth at the Comarcal Hospital of Axarquia her doctors therefore did not have all the relevant information and so did not carry out a caesarean, as is normal when a foetus weighs over 4.5 kilos. They instead opted for a traditional labour which resulted in the baby girl’s right arm being dislocated and permanently paralysed. The girl now has to walk with a cane and needs

help washing and dressing. In awarding the compensation, the judge also took into account the aes-

thetic impact of the scarring the girl had received. He commented, “in 99% of cases these incidents are avoidable.”

1 million kilos of waste recycled FUENGIROLA has so far this year recycled over a million kilos a waste following a council campaign replacing signs showing people how to responsibly dispose of their rubbish. The scheme involves new pictures showing that what the various coloured bins should be used for. Figures show the good work is paying off and that recycling in the town is increasing year on year. The new signs, which are displayed in English and Spanish, were presented by Pedro Vega, Councillor for Cleaning, who said 1,237,938 kilograms of glass, packaging, paper and cardboard have been collected in 2017. Vega explained, “something as simple as dividing waste and putting it in the correct bins is not always done so we have therefore put together this series of posters in Spanish and English, which will be displayed around the city.” He added the new scheme will “offer residents the best possible information.”

Banderas urged to reconsider FIFTY-FIVE artists, writers and composers have signed a letter asking actor Antonio Banderas to reconsider his decision to quit the Astoria culture centre project planned for Malaga. by John Smith The Hollywood star had initially been behind the project until backing out after reportedly being “insulted” by opposition party politicians. A group from the art world, led by Malaga composer Antonio Meliveo, have now called on the actor, who was born in the city, to “reflect, have a little patience and return to the path of enlightenment”. They also expressed their “frustration” at the project’s demise. They explained it would “provide a first-class cultural building for performing arts in Malaga,” adding behaviour by politicians had been “predictable,” echoing Voltaire’s statement, “Spaniards only know how to do three things; love, fight and act the fool.” They have “affectionately” asked organisers to reconsider their decision and continue with the building. The proposed multi-million-euro project would see the dilapidated Astoria and Victoria cinemas transformed into cultural centres providing directing courses, as well as music and dance workshops. Banderas sensationally quit the initiative after reportedly believing party Ciudadanos was uninterested in the centres, and Eduardo Zorilla of

Izquierda Unida had been unfairly critical. In response, Zorrilla said he “never insulted Banderas” and treated him with “utmost respect.” He claimed the star wanted to “make him into one of his movie villains. Zorro and the Zorrilla he could call it.” He added he did not believe the project was the best use for such a prime location. Antonio Banderas has since commented he believes, “Malaga doesn’t have the right environment to develop this sort of project at this point in time.”

Brits sold children for sex

by Matthew Elliott A TWISTED British couple who sold their daughters as sex slaves to a paedophile friend were captured on the Costa del Sol. The perverted pair have been on the run from Guardia Civil for months after fleeing Mallorca when they were convicted for sexual abuse of children. Police found them living in a ram-

shackle shed in Cartama. Investigators believe the man, 54 and his wife, 59, had squatted in the filthy shed since their 2016 conviction. Their crimes stretch back to 2009 when they lived on Mallorca. A court found that the British nationals, identified only by their initials, TLD and BSD, regularly pimped out their underage daughters to a sick accomplice in exchange for money.

Two kidnapped over €300,000 debt NINE people have been arrested for kidnapping two men in Malaga who supposedly owed them hundreds of thousands of euros. The victims were allegedly carrying out a deal involving the sale of gold with the kidnappers at a home in the city when the accused prevented them from leaving, forced them into the back of a van and drive off towards Madrid. One of the two managed to struggle out of his bindings, however, and freed the other before they both jumped from the back of the van. The investigating officers found nine people had acted “in a co-ordinated way,” with three belonging to an organised crime group and the others hailing from an “autonomous and itinerant faction.” One man allegedly acted as go-between amongst the two groups. Police found the accused after identifying the man who rented the van. They worked out he made frequent trips to Madrid and intercepted him on one, arresting two others from his gang in the capital on the same day and the others in Alcorcon the next day. Officers also confiscated two guns, two carbines, a sub-machine gun, documentation, a vehicle, ammunition, a GPS beacon and over €60,000 in cash.

They fled the island to avoid lengthy prison sentences. Fearing they could be anywhere, Balearic Island police issued a European Arrest Warrant and launched a massive manhunt for the evil couple. Guardia Civil agents from Mallorca worked with their Costa del Sol counterparts to track them down to Cartama. Both are now in custody and awaiting sentencing.

Street fight? TWO MEN have been recorded fighting on a roundabout on Mijas Costa, dividing online opinion as to whether the footage is real. Twitter user @JorgeAguilar5_ posted the tape alongside the message, “look at what happened this morning on a famous roundabout on Mijas-Costa. See if you can watch this video without laughing.” A voice off camera tells the men to “fight,” which they do in an amateurish manner, sparking online memes using fighting game, Street Fighter. Twitter users have generally not taken the incident seriously, with @Julius2456 commenting, “you don’t have to be too smart to see this is staged, I don’t think the level of imbecility has gone up that much,” while @RaquelSastreCom, a comedian, commented, “if it is staged, bear in mind how risky it would be so set it up in the middle of a roundabout, involving cars and motorcycles.” User @Abstenida just said, “karate dies of shame on a Mijas roundabout.” Contacted by the Sur newspaper, police sources say they have not received any complaints about the video, not even from, “the person recording, who seems to get out of the car to prevent them from continuing to hit.”

Crutch killer jailed for 20 years AN 85-YEAR-OLD woman found guilty of murdering her cancer-addled husband with a crutch on the Costa del Sol has been jailed for 20 years. The woman, who claimed she did not recollect the incident in the town of Rincon de la Victoria, is now being encouraged to apply to the government for a pardon. Jurors found the woman, whose husband had lung cancer and needed round the clock care, waited until family visitors had left before killing him with his own crutch and then cleaning and hiding the murder weapon. During her trial, prosecutors asserted the woman waited until her husband was resting on a sofa, and, “unexpectedly, taking advantage of his helplessness, which prevented any effective defence, bludgeoned him.” The woman was found to have hit her husband on the head and arms over 40 times, creating 22 head wounds and massive blood loss. The man entered a coma and died at Malaga’s Carlos Haya hospital the next day. Police officers investigating initially believed the woman’s tale that her husband had fallen, but became suspicious when they found blood stains on his own crutch. Sentencing the woman, the judge found the premeditated nature of the attack, the attempted coverup, as well as the abuse of trust of a wife murdering her husband were aggravating factors. Questioned by lawyers during her trial, the woman claimed she now cannot remember the incident, suggesting burglars may have entered the property and attacked her husband but maintaining, “I did not hit him with a crutch.”

Hundreds of homes face demolition AROUND 20,000 homes built on non-urban land on the Costa del Sol could be affected by recent changes to the State Planning Law. by Sally Underwood Last year, the government instructed town halls to take action on potentially illegal homes by putting together a general plan as well as an inventory of all buildings constructed on non-urban land. Once completed, councils will use the two documents to determine whether each property is either legal; “asimilado como fuera de ordenacion”, meaning the property is recognised but subject to further restrictions; or subject to a demolition order. Local activist group Save Our Homes in Axarquia (SOHA) claims around 20,000 homes in the Axarquia area alone could be illegal without their owners knowing. They say only 200 property owners have contacted them so far and are calling on others to come forward so they can organise a platform, putting pressure on the council to declare all homes built with town hall licences legal. Philip Smalley, a spokesman for the organisa-

tion says, “owners of homes on non-urbanisable land (sic) believe that because they have all their paperwork, and no action has been taken against them to date, that they are legal.” He says all property owners will soon receive a letter from the town hall stating what category their home comes under. Smalley is urging any owners concerned about the legal status of their property to contact the association at soha.es to receive advice and add their voice to the campaign. The saga follows the sad story of Janet Hayden, a 70-year-old British woman living in La Viñuela. Janet had bought a plot of land in the area in 2003 and says she was advised by her legal representative that although the land was not designated for housing, she could secure the appropriate licence by paying a small fine. Janet says she never received a licence, however, and after problems with the property’s structure and ensuing bank debts, was ordered to be evicted from her home.

by Sally Underwood THE ANDALUCIAN Musical Association has carried out its first every orchestral meeting in Fuengirola. The event saw young musicians from the Youth Orchestra Promusica de Malaga and the Young Orchestra AMA perform in the town’s fairground. Rodrigo Romero, Councillor for Culture, explained, “The Andalusian Music Association (AMA) is based in Fuengirola, was born in the Andalucian school and is growing stronger, and has achieved several milestones in a short time,” adding, “during the day there were other music-related activities.” Antonio Criado, the AMA’s president, said, “when we created the association five years ago, one of our objectives was to offer all kinds of music to society in general. We started

with a symphonic band and the idea was to create a youth orchestra, as there are very few in the Andalucia, giving young performers a place to develop their art.” He added, “last year we managed to start our young orchestra and today we have about 35 or 40 members.” Performances by the Promusica orchestra included Pachelbel’s canon, Vilvadi’s Spring concerto, Haendel’s Sarabanda, as well as instrumental pieces from films Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. The AMA orchestra, under the direction of Francisco Jose Fernandez Arevalo included the first movement of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, The second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, The fourth movement of Brahm’s first Symphony and Louis Armstrong’s “What a wonderful world.”

Stolen autographs from Serbia up for auction in Spain by Tahnee Wright A dozen autographs of world leaders allegedly stolen from commemoration books in Serbia following the death of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito have been put up for auction in Malaga this weekend, causing Serbia to seek help from Interpol to recover them. The autographs alleged to have been stolen include then US vice president George H.W. Bush, the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The autographs signed off posthumous tributes to Tito, who led socialist Yugoslavia from the end of World War Two until his death in 1980. They were written into commemoration books during official visits by the leaders to Yugoslavia in the years that followed. Following a media report that the autographs had been stolen, Belgrade's Museum of Yugoslav History launched an investigation and established that pages were missing from the tribute books that were on display in a mausoleum that is part of the museum's complex. ‘We reported the case to police and they will inform Interpol... We are waiting for a response,’ museum official Ana Radic told the Spanish press. ‘The theft appears to have taken place before the museum took over the running of the mausoleum in 2015’, she explained. ‘We also contacted the auction house and asked them to cancel the auction and provide us with additional information on the documents so we can confirm their authenticity’

and recover them, Radic said. The director of the British-based auction house ‘Autographs Auctions’, Richard Davie, told the Spanish press a colleague managing the sale ‘has been in touch with the relevant authorities and is complying with their requests for further information regarding the documents’. ‘In the rare event that the ownership of documents is brought into question then we are always willing to assist

the relevant parties in further investigations and if necessary, withdraw documents from the auction until the rightful owner can be established,’ Davie told the Spanish press by email. Among the other autographs that have gone missing are those of India's first female prime minister Indira Gandhi, assassinated Swedish premier Olof Palme, Cambodia's king Norodom Sihanouk, late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad and Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

German crossbow Firefighters stalker deported injured in blaze A German man who stalked celebrities and served eight years in a Spanish prison for attempted murder was deported to his home country on Monday. Arndt Meyer was placed on a flight immediately after his release from Estremera penitentiary in the Madrid region, where he was imprisoned for trying to kill young actress Sara Casasnovas with a crossbow in June 2009. Meyer was originally told he could enjoy a 30-day period in Spain before he legally had to leave the country, but authorities repealed this decision after the Spanish press revealed he kept a scrapbook filled with photographs of young actresses who could become his next targets. Meyer, who suffers from a personality disorder, was handed to German police by Spanish authorities on Monday. Meyer will be kept a close eye on by Interpol and his name will be added to a register of sex offenders. In Spain, investigators are now trying to determine how Meyer obtained the photographs while serving time. Meyer’s scrapbook was discovered in October. Prison authorities suspected that the he persisted in harassing Sara Casasnovas by telephone as she had reported night calls to her private number in 2015 and 2016. Following his conviction, Meyer was banned from contacting Casasnovas or approaching her until January 29, 2020.

TWO FIREMEN have been hurt while battling an early morning fire on Calle Tucidides in Malaga’s Santa Barbara poligono. Forensic police are now investigating what started the blaze, which seriously damaged three warehouses, and, according to SUR newspaper, have not ruled out arson. Workers battled the inferno for over three hours from 2.45am, before finally bringing it under control, with two firefighters wounded in the process. It is thought their injuries are not life-threatening, however, with one of them breaking a finger. The fire wrecked a parquet flooring warehouse, as we as another stocking cleaning machinery and one selling mattresses. Three fire engines, as well as the Local Police, National Police and health workers all attended the scene after receiving several emergency calls. Firefighters believe the blaze started in one of the three warehouses before spreading to the other two.

Female zookeeper killed by a tiger in Cambridge zoo

Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor resigns

Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor Manuel Moix has resigned after three months following criticism of his handling of certain cases — some involving members of the governing Popular Party — and revelations that his family held an offshore account in Panama. State prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza said Thursday that Moix had resigned for personal reasons. He said his office found that Moix ‘at no time acted illegally or inappropriately’ and saw no reason to fire him despite the political and media uproar of recent weeks. Opposition parties showed unusual unity in reprimanding Moix, Maza and Spain's justice minister last month for allegedly hindering anti-corruption investigations. The government steadfastly defended Moix but revelations that he held offshore company shares were seen to be the last straw, even though it was not illegal.

by Tahnee Wright A female zookeeper who was killed by a tiger in Cambridge, England in what zoo officials called a ‘freak accident’ has been identified. Rosa King, 34, died on Monday at Hamerton Zoo after one of the zoo’s tigers reportedly entered an enclosure where Rosa was working and attacked her. Devastated family and friends have paid tribute to Rosa, who was a carnivore keeper at the zoo. Rosa's mother said of her daughter, ‘She wouldn't have done anything else, it's what she has always done, it's what she has always loved.’ Gary Chrisholm, a wildlife photographer who often visited the zoo, said that Rosa was an integral part of the park.

‘Rosa wasn’t just a keeper at Hamerton Zoo - she was Hamerton Zoo. Her passion for the animals in her care was exceptional though her favourites were undoubtedly the cheetahs, who she would refer to as her pride and joy,’ Chrisholm wrote on his Facebook. ‘I feel privileged to have known Rosa and been able to call her a friend.’ Emergency services were called to the park at around 11.15am on Monday following reports of a ‘serious incident’. A Magpas air ambulance was on the scene 20 minutes later and visitors were evacuated from the attraction just before midday. An East of England Ambulance Service paramedic crew and two rapid response vehicles also attended. The zoo said it appeared to have been a ‘freak accident’, as it remained closed

amid an investigation. In a statement, the zoo said: ‘At no point during the incident did any animals escape their enclosures and at no point was public safety affected in any way.’ ‘All our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues, friends and families at this dreadful time.’ Cambridgeshire Police said the tiger had not been killed and was unharmed. The zoo opened in June 1990 and covers 25 acres. It includes enclosures for Malaysian tigers, Bengal tigers, cheetahs, wolves, corsac foxes, kangaroos as well as a variety of birds, reptiles and domestic animals. In October 2008, a cheetah who escaped from the park was found by a nine-year-old boy in the back garden of his family home.

Boy loses both legs on Madrid Metro A 13-year-old Morrocan boy lost both his legs from the tibia down on Sunday, after being run over by a Madrid Metro train on Line 1. Early investigations report the boy was riding between two carriages while the train was in motion. The incident took place at 8.00pm as the train pulled out of the Sierra de Guadalupe station, in the southeast of the city. Security camera footage shows that the train had already closed its doors and was leaving the station when the boy climbed onto the link between two of the carriages. Just several metres down, once the train was in a tunnel, the boy fell. The train driver was not aware of the situation and continued out of the tunnel, running over the boy in the process. Despite losing his legs, the boy managed to crawl off the tracks to safety reaching a ventilation shaft and calling for help. A pedestrian on the street heard the boy’s calls and alerted the emergency services immediately. The boy was taken to La Paz hospital in a critical condition. Medical sources told Spanish press on Monday that the boy was still being treated.

Joy Barker Markham has dedicated her life to children in need by John Smith ESTEPONA resident, mother and grandmother Joy Barker Markham has devoted her life to helping children in Sri Lanka following the Tsunami that created so many orphans. Having spent a number of years running her own company in the UK, Joy became involved in raising funds for children with Cerebral Palsy and when offered €100,000 to set up her own charity, Joy didn’t need to think for too long before creating the Manacare Foundation in 1994. The original purpose of the charity was to help children in danger and distress around the world and this continues to the present day but following the 2004 Tsunami and with her mother living in Sri Lanka, she decided to create a village in that country to look after a number of orphans. Tsunami With help from a fund raising dinner hosted by Sandro Morelli of Villa Tiberio in Marbella, she was given sufficient money to purchase 2.3 acres of land and with support from members of her church, the Evangelical Church of Marbella, she was able to raise additional funds to complete the building and start what is planned to be a self-sufficient community known as Hopes and Dreams Village. When asked if she is a Missionary in the old fashioned sense, Joy told RTN “Gosh, a missionary ... I guess I am now. First and Foremost I am a Christian and I like to be able to help those in need, my need to help doesn't come from my head, it really does come from my heart and I feel so deeply for those in war torn countries, those with disabilities, orphans, refugees, the homeless. Joy and Sir Cliff with volunteers “I do think that the sick should be the responsibility of the Governments concerned ... having said that there was an occasion when I had to take a small orphan to a hospital in Sierra Leone and I even had to buy sheets for his bed!” She went on to explain “I would like to stress that there are no posh offices, no company cars, no expensive board room lunches. I do not receive a salary, what is given gets directly to those in need, and only those who need help receive a salary, albeit very small, but sufficient for them to keep their families.” Hopes and Dreams When Joy first arrived in Sri Lanka following the destruction of whole communities, she saw that there were plenty of international charities building houses but understood that what was also needed was small industry, jobs and medical services as well as care for the very young. This then became her mission and in Sri Lanka they make soap, candles, and have a sewing workshop. The local girls are trained and at first the idea was to set them up in their homes to continue to work but they wanted to continue to work within the Manacare community and even petitioned Joy to have a second floor with a flat roof built on the property in case of new floods. Running costs The running of the village costs around €3,000 a month and apart from the sale of locally made produce, most of the funds are raised from donations made by generous members of the congregation of her church as well as a small number of sponsors from Sir Lanka and the UK. Publicity is the lifeblood for the charity which still cares for an increasing number of children which is why they were so pleased when both actress Gillian Anderson and Sir Cliff Richard visited the village to show their support as press coverage helps to encourage donations. Having lived in El Paraiso, Estepona for 37 years, Joy shares her time between Spain and Sri Lanka and has just returned to the Hopes and Dreams Village laden down with supplies and expects to be in residence there for several months. Ongoing threat The constant fear of tragedy surrounds her and only a few days ago, torrential rains struck the island killing 151 and displacing 100,000 people so she knew it was time to get back to the village to see what she could do to help. This worthwhile charity is making a real difference to the lives of the young, the disabled and the dispossessed helping to keep them healthy and paying some a small amount of money to allow them independence. Can you help? Joy the farmer

Unlike some of the large international charities, Manacare isn’t asking for large amounts of money but welcomes donations and sponsorship for any amount, no matter how small, so if any reader wishes to help please visit http://www.manacare.org.uk/ to learn more.

A word to the wise when visiting Gibraltar Part Three by John Smith Having enjoyed the shops, bars and restaurants, what else is there to do for the day visitor to Gibraltar? Many people have heard of the Apes of Gibraltar which are in fact Barbary Macaques (a species of monkey) who live on the Rock and to a great extent in free colonies. At one time they were the responsibility of the Gibraltar Regiment but are now cared for by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society who ensure they are fed and they are without doubt one of the most famous of the tourist attractions on the Rock. As they live in the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, visitors are not allowed to drive their own cars to the Upper Rock and the two ways of exploring the area are via the six minute ride on the cable car which was built in 1966 and return tickets cost from £6 (€7 approx.) return for children and £14.50 (€17 approx.) for adults and taxi. The view from the Upper Rock is fantastic provided that the Levanter Cloud (formed by an easterly wind from the Mediterranean) is not present and at the summit there is a café, gift shop, wifi, photo opportunities and even a special tour App to download to your phone. The monkeys understand human nature and whilst some will pose for photographs, others will be sniffing the air to see if they can smell food and if so, they will have no compunction about trying to steal it. At the end of the day they are not pets but are wild animals with sharp teeth and a protective instinct for their young. Feel free to enjoy them but treat them with care. For an extra cost, you can gain access to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve which includes the amazing St Michael’s Cave, said to have tunnels reaching all the way under the Straits to Morocco which is less than one kilometre away, Ape Rock, the Moorish Castle and the Great Siege Tunnels as well as the newly constructed walkway but be warned this does include some walking both up and downhill. The cable car leaves from Red Sands Road which is a five minute walk from the Chief Minister’s Office in Main Street and is situated opposite the soon to be relocated Art Deco Fire Station and at the entrance to the Alameda Gardens (of which more later). Clustered around the entrance to the cable car will be a number of taxis with drivers anxious to persuade potential customers to use their services rather than take the cable car. Now that a new Taxi Charter has been introduced, fares and obligations of the drivers have been clarified. This charter requires that drivers charge £12 (€14 approx.) per passenger with a minimum of four passengers and that passengers may ask for up to four stops during the tour but will be responsible for costs of entry to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. If you want the excitement of the cable car and the view as it travels 412 metres above sea level to the summit, then take that option but if you want to see more of the Upper Rock then the taxi option is probably best, although you may wish to check to see whether your party will be sharing the mini bus taxi with anyone else. Next week we will consider the Alameda Gardens and other places of interest.

175th anniversary celebrations FUENGIROLA has drawn a close to the town’s 175th anniversary with a concert by the municipal band in Plaza de la Constitucion. The town has been celebrating the landmark since May 2016 with a series of events including concerts, exhibitions, conferences, as well as sports and leisure activities to honour the beginning of the prosperous area. Fuengirola’s Mayor, Ana Mula, explained, “we wanted all sections of society to get involved with this event, from clubs, associations, businesses, political parties and ordinary residents.” She went on to thank all those who had made the celebrations over the last year possible, including the town’s workers and cleaners.

Local singers funds for sick THE Sunset Beach Club in Benalmadena hosted a fantastic evening which raised €11,290.80c for three children’s charities. Local favourite Ricky Lavazza shared the bill with relative newcomer Nikki Rae and presented a stunning three hour show to the sellout audience who paid just €10 per person for entry with every cent going to the charities. So popular was the show that extra tables and chairs encroached onto the dance floor of the Moonlight Club as more and more people turned up to enjoy the concert and to help raise funds for suffering children. Ricky Lavazza has an incredibly strong voice and a natural charm and he struck up an immediate rapport with the audience, many of whom regularly attend his shows. Audiences like to hear songs that they recognise and Ricky manages to cover the songbooks of such well known stars as Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones and Freddie Mercury without just mimicking then but by injecting his personality into their songs. When Ricky left the stage for the first time, the room went quiet and then a spotlight picked out Nikki Rae walking through the audience, the spitting image of her heroine Adele and singing so much like the British star, you could have been excused for thinking she was in the room. Just like Ricky before her, she not only captured the audience with the quality

Steve Day, Ricky and Emma

of her performance but also enjoyed chatting about Adele and her admiration for one of the UK’s most successful female singers of all time. The main point of the evening was to celebrate 30 years of the Sunset Beach Club and to raise funds once again for three incredibly worthwhile children’s charities all of which have a strong Spanish connection. The management of the Club who have regularly supported the charities with annual events

of this type made a very generous undertaking to match whatever funds were raised from the entry tickets and raffle which saw huge numbers of tickets sold. Credit must go to all of the companies who donated prizes for the raffle but special mention should be made of Steve Day, Managing Director of Oak Land Furniture SL who gave two €500 vouchers to be used to select furniture from his store in San Pedro Alcantara. Thanks to the hard work of these two great singers who performed over and above expectation, the staff at the Moonlight Club who kept the canapés coming and the drinks flowing, the ushers who transformed into very impressive dancers towards the end of the night and the light and sound crew who got everything right, the evening was a massive success. The total raised which was €1,000 more than 2016 meant that each of the three charities, Debra Butterfly Children, Make-A-Wish Spain and Barretstown received a cheque for €3,763.60c. Everyone involved in this fantastic evening should feel pleased and proud of the results. Debra Butterfly Children Charity was founded in 1993 in order to try to supply relief and possibly a cure for those who suffer from Epidermolysis Bullosa, also The cheque presentation known as Butterfly Skin which affects a number of children in Spain (www.pieldemariposa.es). Make-a-Wish Spain is affiliated to the international charity operating in 50 countries with the aim of making life happier and more of exciting for children suffering from serious illnesses by trying to help make their secret dreams come true (www.makeawishspain.org). Barretstown, founded by actor Paul Newman is based in Ireland and runs residential camps and programmes for children and their families affected by cancer and other serious illness. The charity offers a range of adventurous, fun and challenging activities which are supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care and welcomes more than 100 children each year, mainly cancer sufferers, from Spain (www.barretstown.org).

Por and Para

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

Amazing as it seems, I haven’t yet written about the difference between “por” and “para” in Spanish. Considering the fact that I’m getting near the two hundred mark of what will eventually become a fivevolume series of “Step by Step Spanish” articles, that’s quite an achievement, especially as it’s a question that comes up frequently in class. So, I’m now going to compare and contrast the uses of POR and PARA in three ways, according to three different concepts. Before you throw up your hands in horror, just think for a while about how you would explain the use of the words “for” and “to” to someone who didn’t speak much English. Believe me, that would be much more complicated than what we are going to do now. Reason v. purpose Firstly, we use “por” to express the reason for something and “para” to express the purpose for something. When we ask “¿Por qué?” (Why?), we are actually asking “For what reason?”, that is, what is the cause of something. There is another question which is “¿Para qué?” which also means “Why?” but in the sense of “what for?”, that is, “For what purpose?” “Por” on its own in this sense can be translated as “because of”. “¿Por qué llegas tarde?” (Why are you late?) “Por el tráfico” (Because of the traffic) – in other word expressing the reason for, or cause of, our lateness. “Para” on the other hand expresses “purpose”. “¿Para qué usas esta herramienta?” (What do you use this tool for?) “Para cortar madera” (To cut wood) – in other words, for the

purpose of cutting word. Exchange v. one way The second concept is the contrast between “exchange” on the one hand, and something going in one direction, i.e. not being exchanged, on the other. This is easier to understand with examples. “Compré un libro por 20 euros” (I bought a book for – in exchange for – 20 euros). “Compré un libro para mi marido” (I bought a book for – as a present for - my husband). Therefore, if you say “compré un libro por mi marido” you are saying: “I bought a book in exchange for my husband” which, as tempting as it might sound, is not a deal usually offered by bookshops. Period of time v. time deadline Thirdly we have a time-related concept. “Por” refers to a period of time whereas “para” refers to a time deadline. The classic mistake is when we want to say: “I’m going to England for two weeks” which is: “Voy a Inglaterra por dos semanas”. “Two weeks” is a period of time so we must use “por”. However, when “for” refers to a specific time in the future we use “para” as in “Los deberes son para martes”. The homework is for Tuesday. “Llegarán para las dos”. “They will arrive for (or by) two o´clock”. In addition to these three main concepts, there are quite a lot of idiomatic uses of “por” and “para” (especially “por”) which you just have to get familiar with

one by one. Many of them you already know – “por favor”; “para mí”; “por teléfono”; “gracias por …”. Another meaning of “por” is “by” or “times” as when we are saying measurements. “2m x 2m” would be said using “por” and the texting symbol for “por” is an “x”. On the other hand, if you can’t get to grips with any of this, you can always shout out “¡Por dios!” but definitely not “para dios”, if you don’t mind.

Book Review

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro Robots will take over Earth, says royal astronomer Daily Mail. April 2017.

He follows Professor Stephen Hawking who has said that artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. (Victoria Allen. Science Correspondent) And on this premise, this is where I begin. Perhaps the author's name seems familiar? One of his well-known books is "Remains of the Day." The book under review was published in 2005, a sad and haunting book presenting a dystopian society. Deeply disturbing and frightening. "We demonstrated to the world that if students were reared in humane, cultivated environments, it was possible for them to grow to be as sensitive and intelligent as any ordinary human being." Organ donations, cloning, artificial intelligence, gene editing and robotics interested Ishiguro who believed that they could transform the way we live and interact with each other over the next thirty years and he presents to us very simple, unambitious and uncomplicated people interested in discovering their "possibles" and fulfilling their destinies: being carers, donors and ultimately reaching completion. Were they meant to be just "shadowy objects in test tubes" so repulsive and disgusting to the human race as indicated by their Guardinfo@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

ians? Pawns in a game? "There are people who shudder at the very thought of you-how you were brought into this world and why-and who dread the idea of your hand brushing against theirs." Take, for example Madame who visits the school to collect work for her Gallery and distances herself from the students as if they are inhuman. Kathy reflects on her childhood at Hailsham, a special institution where the clones were reared and allowed some privileges whereas others were "reared in deplorable conditions." We learn about her fragile relationship with Ruth and Tommy and their love triangle, following them from the Hailsham days through to the Cottages where they developed study skills prior to begin training to be carers to the hospitals where it all ended. Kathy survives for a time, at least. She has been a carer for more than eleven years and soon she will be a donor like all of her Hailsham friends. As children growing up they seemed to behave just like normal children with their petty jealousies and anxieties, bullying Tommy for being a bit of a misfit and exploding with temper tantrums. But perhaps he was more human than we gave him credit for?

Ruth suffers with insecurities which closely reveals human emotions and concludes that she, just like all the other clones are modelled from trash. Perhaps a junkie or a prostitute, a tramp or a convict? “If you want to look for possibles, then you look in the gutter. You look in rubbish bins. Look down the toilet, that’s where you’ll find where we came from.” Who tampered with nature and created people with souls who were capable of experiencing love but not grief? Their pain and suffering was real to save the lives of others as their bodies shut down for good. Clones?? It will leave a lasting impression. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. Publisher: Faber & Faber Ltd. Much more than a saint by

Michael Walsh

When the actor Roger Moore passed away on May 23 I felt a personal sense of loss. The thespian is perhaps best known for his part as James Bond; others will relate better to his role in The Saint TV series. As a well-travelled habitué of North, East, South and West Africa my evocations of Roger Moore centre on the Wild Geese movie. Released in 1978, the film is a reminder of the cynical and ruthless methods of rich and powerful men who kill without blinking a reptilian eyelid. The Wild Geese was inspired by South African author Daniel Carney’s unpublished novel The Thin White Line. The film’s title, its flag and shoulder patch, was modelled on Ireland’s 17th century legendary army in exile. Rhodesia and Swaziland provide the backdrop to the parachute drop carried out by the 49 hired dogs of war. The mostly British mercenaries had been contracted by banker Sir Edward Matheson to re-install a popular African president. If successful, the overthrown president awaiting execution will be released by the mercenaries. It is a tough assignment as the deposed president Julius Limbani is held in a remote garrison. He is guarded by several hundred Cuban and notorious Simba tribesmen. The soldiers of fortune are led by Colonel Alan Faulkner played by Welsh born Richard Burton, whose role was well chosen. The success of the Wild Geese movie is likely due to its stark realism. Those watching the movie felt it was not so much a film as a documentary. The movie’s director, Andrew McLaglen, will certainly have learned much from the epic documentary, Africa Adios. The part

played by Colonel Alan Falkner (Richard Burton) was modelled on Irish-born mercenary Colonel Mike Hoare. Roger Moore assumed the role of ex-pilot Shawn Fynn. The part is pivotal and the actor’s good humour whilst under fire is legendary. The movie recounts the breath-taking exploits of the mercenary band of brothers during the white knuckle ride rescue attempt. Irish actor and former drifter Richard Harris (Rafer Janders) was the only one of the main actors who did not have military experience. After successfully rescuing deposed President Limbani the triumphant mercenaries wait on a remote airstrip for the arrival of a rescuing transport aircraft. Disaster: The corrupt banker, who bankrolled the rescue, has meantime cut a deal for mineral assets with the incumbent president. Limbani is no longer needed. The rescuing aircraft is diverted and the mostly White desperadoes are abandoned deep in the African bush. Their chances of survival are slim; the movie chronicles their desperate plight and escape. Roger Moore played the part well but there’s no escaping the Grim Reaper.

The newspaper sections I refuse to read and have done for several years now, are the financial pages. The tables, graphs and forecasts leave me dizzy and the so called experts have got it wrong so many times now, I am puzzled as to why anybody would listen to a word they say. But it’s the complicated figures that turn me off as much as anything, because ever since my secondary school days I have built a mental block to all that stuff. Primary school was fine, I coped with fractions and then decimals and even learned how to convert one to the other. As for mental arithmetic, I was a whizz and have been ever since. It was a breeze. I had no problem with other subjects and passed my 11-Plus. Well almost. Then came the Big School and everything changed. I found myself in the selective stream for those who were border line cases, and for which there was a grammar syllabus which included a new word – ‘Maths’. In the primary school it was simply termed ‘Arithmetic’ and even earlier, ‘Sums’. Why change the name? But I was soon to find out. The first Geometry lesson was a blur. This wasn’t sums, this was drawing weird shapes with even weirder names – rhombuses, trapezoids and parallelograms. Then there were obtuse and acute angles . . . who even gave a monkies? It didn’t help that the history teacher had called me obtuse. How could I be described as someone between 90 and 180 degrees? Then came Algebra, oh boy. It had taken me an age in infant school to learn by rote the twelve times tables and then get to grips with addition, subtraction and long division – all using numbers. But I had learned them all and was proud of myself. Now this. Suddenly letters of the alphabet were part of the equation, literally, because ‘equation’ was another alien name that had been slipped into the vocabulary. I understood about roots, but how could you find the cube or square root of a jumble of letters and numbers? And why bother? By the time they hit me with trigonometry, or trig as the smart alecs’ of the class smugly called it, with its sines, cosines and tangents, I was done. I carry the mental scar to this day and the terror of that dreaded beast called mathematics.

Santander or Bankia most likely to save Banco Popular Spain's biggest bank Santander or state-owned lender Bankia are most likely to step in to save troubled Banco Popular, sources familiar with the talks told Reuters, although a deal is still far from guaranteed. Popular is racing to find a merger partner after Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos ruled out a potential bailout with public money, while a capital increase is facing resistance from the bank's existing shareholders. Saddled with €37 billion of soured property assets, Popular has asked for binding offers by June 10 and aims to close a takeover by the end of next month. The bank lost €3.6 billion in 2016 and has undergone three leadership shakeups in less than a year. Its shares have fallen 65 percent over the past year and are the worst performers on the European STOXX banking index. Santander, Bankia and BBVA all showed initial interest in Popular in a preliminary round of talks earlier this month.

Spain’s inflation slows down

Spain's inflation slowed to a five-month low in May, flash data from the statistical office INE showed Tuesday. Consumer prices advanced 1.9 percent year-onyear in May, slower than the 2.6 percent increase registered in April. This was the slowest since December 2016, when prices gained 1.6 percent. At the same time, harmonized consumer price inflation came in at 2 percent versus 2.6 percent in April. Month-on-month, consumer prices slid 0.1 percent, in contrast to a 1 percent rise in the previous month. The harmonized index of consumer prices remained flat in May.

Indian Prime Minister arrives in Spain Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged Spanish firms to invest in India, saying that the fast-growing country offers ‘many opportunities’ in areas ranging from tourism to energy. ‘India is an enormous country and it offers many opportunities to Spanish firms in all sectors,’ he said as he arrived at Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's official residence in Madrid for talks. ‘I invite Spanish firms to participate in our development,’ he added. Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Spain late on Tuesday from Germany, his first stop on a four-nation Europe tour, was scheduled to meet King Felipe VI later on Wednesday. He was also supposed to meet Spanish business leaders as part of his push to increase foreign investment in India, the world's fastest-growing major economy. ‘Spanish firms are global leaders in sectors that are a priority for us. We want to attract tourism, infrastructure, energy and defence firms,’ Prime Minister Modi said in an interview published in the Spanish press. Spain is India's seventh largest trading partner in the European Union. Two-way trade totalled €4.72 billion in 2016, an 8.5 per cent increase over the previous year, of which Spanish exports made up nearly €1.26 billion. The number of Spanish firms that operate in India has risen to over 230 currently from just 70 in 2008. ‘Our bilateral relations are becoming more and more intense. I hope this visit spurs deeper ties between our two countries,’ Rajoy said. It is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Spain since Narasimha Rao came to the country in 1992.

Clampdown on rogue landlords To enable them to come and live in Spain and to enjoy the associated lifestyle that brings many people rented their properties in the UK as a regular source of income. But if they have followed that route, it’s essential to follow some of the basic rules of being a landlord if they’re not to fall foul of the increasing amount of regulations. In one such case, landlords renting out properties in the London Borough of Brent have been ordered to pay fines totalling more than £500,000 over the past 18 months, which the local council says is thanks to its ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to ‘criminal landlords’. Brent Council started clamping down on rogue landlords and ramped up its enforcement activity at the start of last year, with an average of two to five prosecutions now taking place in Brent every month. A total of 44 prosecutions in 2016/2017 led to 89 convictions related to landlord licensing and housing management charges. In addition, around 600 raids are carried out by the council’s enforcement team in Brent a year. Spencer Randolph, head of private housing services in Brent, said: “The half a million pound landmark sends a clear message to landlords in Brent: if you don’t have the correct license, you will face hefty fines and a criminal record in court. “We are especially targeting our enforcement activity on Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO), so if you’re a landlord letting a property to three or more people and they are not all related you need to get the property licensed quickly before you feel the full force of the law.” He continued: “Our aim is to improve the living standards for tenants in Brent who are renting private accommodation and this means taking a zero-tolerance approach to rogue landlords who ignore the laws. “No renter in Brent should be forced to put up with cramped, hazardous and unhygienic conditions. Residents who report their landlords can do so anonymously.”

Lay a successful vegetable garden Planning a vegetable garden and successfully harvesting your own produce is easier than you might think. The layout of a vegetable garden can make or break its success, so it's important to do it right. Here are simple tips and ideas to help you get started on your own vegetable garden.

to build and can be filled with high quality topsoil instead of amending existing soil. Before building a raised bed and filling it with topsoil, make sure any lawn is completely removed and dead. If you live in an area that has rabbits or deer, consider a fence of the appropriate height.

PICK A SITE The more sunlight the better, but you'll need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Make sure the spot you select isn't shaded during different times of the day by trees, walls, or buildings. In addition, place your site well away from large trees, which can compete for moisture and nutrients. And if you're just getting started with vegetable gardening, you might want to consider starting with just a small plot or even container gardening.

TEND TO YOUR GARDEN Stay on top of weeds—hand pulling or hoeing is best in vegetable gardens. Water regularly so the soil stays consistently moist; don't let it dry completely before watering again. And fertilize regularly; most vegetables are heavy feeders.

PLAN YOUR LAYOUT Raised beds—simple rectangular wooden frames 8-10 inches tall—are the preferred way to grow a vegetable garden. Soil in raised beds warms quickly in spring, lengthening the growing season, and can be filled with high quality topsoil. Raised beds should be accessible from all sides and no more than 4 feet wide so all parts of it can be reached from the perimeter. Design your vegetable garden layout so plants get progressively taller from the south edge to the north. If you're working with a small space, there are easy plant combinations that you'll enjoy harvesting. Try these ideas: Salad garden: rocket, romaine lettuce, nasturtium Salsa garden: chives, coriander, tomatillos, hot peppers Corn salad garden: bell peppers, sweet corn, purple basil Veggie pizza garden: tomatoes, oregano, bell peppers Pesto garden: spinach, garlic, chives, sweet basil PREPARE YOUR SITE Raised beds are a good way to get started with a new vegetable garden—they're simple

CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS Dependable, easy vegetables to grow in summer include peppers, tomatoes, beans, squash, corn, and cucumbers. For spring and Autumn, try lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, and carrots. There are many other options, but these are all good for beginning gardeners. If you're unsure where to start with your vegetable garden, consider these sure-fire plants that work well together and, with proper tending, produce crops that will convince you of the value of your own homegrown produce. Try: Bell peppers: green peppers will turn red, orange, and yellow the longer they spend on the vine; sow seeds when the soil is fully warmed Cucumbers: go for a compact version and don't sow until the soil is fully warmed Green beans: great alongside lettuce, which matures before beans ripen Hot peppers: If you don't have extra space, try a container vegetable garden filled with a few varieties of hot peppers. Lettuce: Sow lettuce the first thing in spring and after summer temperatures have cooled for a double harvest. Squash: Go for a bush variety to save space Sweet corn: The soil should be fully warm before you plant sweet corn; it needs room to plant it alongside low-growing green beans. Watermelon: Watermelon must be fully mature in order to be harvested and needs room, so go for a bush variety.

How to clean your BBQ After you’ve wined and dined your family and friends, it is understandable that the last thing you want to do is spend time cleaning your BBQ. However, it’s a job that’s best to get out of the way as soon as possible rather than leaving until next time, as you’ll find that dirt is much easier to remove if done straight away. Cleaning your BBQ does not need to be a difficult or timeconsuming task, so we’ve compiled some tips to make your BBQ cleaning a breeze. Start by cleaning the cooking grates: 1. Leave your BBQ to cool down for around 30 minutes after switching it off and then if sufficiently cool, tackle the cooking grates, removing them from the BBQ itself. 2. Use a spray bottle of BBQ grate cleaner or a simple mix of soapy water to coat the surface of your cooking grates to degrease and clean. You might want to leave this for a few minutes to soak in to any burnt-on food and soften before brushing. 3. Once soaked, you can use a BBQ brush to get rid of those stubborn bits of food stuck to the grate and brush until completely clean. Now all you need to do is leave this outside to dry and the arduous work is done! Cleaning your gas BBQ: 1. Once you’ve cleaned your BBQ grate, it’s time to move on to the appliance itself. Start the cleaning process by simply turning up the BBQ burners for a couple of minutes to remove any last bits of food that are clinging on to the grill. 2. Next, turn the BBQ off completely then safely disconnect the gas. Lift out the grill parts of your BBQ layer by layer and check that there is nothing lodged within your burners to prevent your BBQ from giving you uneven heat. Afterwards,

use soapy water or grill cleaner with a wire brush to attack any other food remains and rust spots. Cleaning your charcoal BBQ: 1. Once your BBQ is over, wait a sufficient amount of time until the charcoals are cold before you begin cleaning, but do not throw cold water on to the coals. Coals can then be removed ready for a thorough cleaning!

Chelsea Flower Show in full swing Britain's most prestigious flower show has been in full swing this week with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of floral delights. The highlight of Britain's horticultural calendar, the annual Chelsea Flower Show in London's sprawling Royal Hospital complex features a host of elaborate gardens designed by experts and is famous for its unusual installations. The event is also one of the staples of the city's spring social calendar, with celebrities including media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Oscarwinning actress Judi Dench in attendance this year. The Royal family are also perpetual visitors - the Queen made her annual visit this week and the Duchess of Cambridge was also pictured browsing the blossoms. The show ends tomorrow (Saturday) and organisers said it was expected to attract around 165,000 visitors.

2. Once charcoal has been removed, empty the remaining ash and dust into a rubbish bin. 3. Prepare a bowl of soapy water or spray bottle of BBQ cleaning fluid ready to give your BBQ a really good clean, using a BBQ brush and cleaning sponge. 4. Rinse your whole charcoal BBQ with water, ensuring that no food is remaining on the grill and replace your BBQ grate before covering and storing ready for its next use.

On everyone’s lips

Ariana Grande’s ‘One Last Time’ hits number one in the iTunes chart as fans purchase the track in tribute to victims of Manchester bombing. The singer, 23, performed the track on the night 22 people were killed in the foyer of the MEN Arena when terrorist Salman Abedi detonated a nail bomb. Fans started a petition to get the song, which was released in 2015, to the top of the charts in tribute to those who died in the explosion. It has since claimed top spot ahead of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito and Liam Payne’s Strip That Down. Reports have claimed that the US singer, 23, will be back on UK turf for the fundraising gig as early as next Sunday, June 4. TMZ states that Grande will headline the show, with her manager Scooter Braun currently in the process of booking other acts to join the line-up. I hosted Benidorm Pink Weekend just last week and was honoured to do a charity balloon launch in memorial of those tragic victims. With thanks for Fresh Radio we raised 500 euros for the relief charity.

One Direction’s ex-band member Liam Payne was a guest on this week’s Graham Norton Show, although the interview itself was charming, sweet and actually very honest, the exclusive performance of his new single left us disappointed and a bit cheated. Quote from a fan: “Bieber tribute act fail” meets “poor Justin Timberlake impersonation”. Something like that, yeah. If we could revert back time, and this would be Liam’s audition (kind of felt like an audition to be honest) on “The X Factor”, I would not tell him “yes” to move on to the next round.” Liam also revealed he didn’t meet Cheryl’s dad until she was pregnant! The former One Direction singer welcomed his first child, son Bear, with his 33-year-old girlfriend in March after more than a year of dating. Sitting on the sofa alongside actress Salma Hayek and Britain’s Got Talent judge and comedian David Walliams, Liam also opened up about how he first got together with Cheryl. The singer confirmed X Factor boss Simon Cowell had been instrumental in their romance, recalling: “I told him how hot I thought she was. Weeks and months went by and then Niall said, ‘You’ll never guess who fancies you!’

what’s on

Prepare to be scared Art display UNTIL 20 June, students from the Municipal Painting Workshop are exhibiting their works in Fuengirola’s House of Culture. The painting workshop, which was taught by Paco Perez brought together students with various interests, from young people preparing for an entrance exam to study fine arts, to children with a creative flair and older people who wanted to have a go. Classes taught different techniques, such as drawing with charcoal and pastel, as well as work with ink, watercolour, acrylic paint, and mixed media, with students allowed to pick their own medium. Perez has been teaching painting for over 30 years, to people of all ages. Each year students from his workshops display their works in the House of Culture, where the exhibition will be open from 9am to 1.30om and 5pm to 9pm.

food & drink Super seaweed is the future

Seaweed may be a hot new food trend, but this leafy green from the sea has been used in Asian cuisine for thousands of years. Not only is seaweed low in calories and fat, it’s also packed with essential nutrients like vitamins A. B and C. Better yet? Research shows it’s a good source of antioxidants and calcium and can prevent and reduce inflammation. You may know seaweed as a crunchy, salty snack, the wrap that holds together sushi rolls or even covered in brown sugar in your local Chinese restaurant. What you may not know is that seaweed is an important food ingredient that improves the taste of foods, makes them better for us and benefits the environment. For example, carrageenan, an ingredient naturally derived from red seaweed, makes our ice cream creamy and keeps chocolate milk from separating. It can also be used instead of sodium in deli meats and to replace fats and sugar in other foods. Some sweets, like puddings and chewy sweets, get their unique texture from gelatin, an animal-based ingredient. But what about those who follow a vegetarian or kosher diet? Have no fear, seaweed is here! Plant-based carrageenan can be used in place of gelatin to make sure these tasty snacks are vegetarian, vegan, halal and kosher. Alginates, also a seaweedbased ingredient, are added to baked goods, such as bread, and even your favourite energy bars to make them taste better and stay fresh for longer. Alginates are also used to make beer foamy and replace the fat in low-fat ice cream. But seaweed doesn’t just benefit the foods we eat: it’s also good for the environment and the people who farm it. Seaweed is one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly crops on the planet. It requires none of the fertilizers, pesticides or other chemicals that are used in land-based farming, and seaweed sequesters carbon and cleans ocean water of phosphorus and nitrogen. Some scientists and researchers believe seaweed might even be the biofuel of the future. More than 75.000 farmers around the world rely on seaweed farming to support their families. Before they started farming carrageenan seaweed, many coastal communities lived at or below the poverty level. With the income they earn harvesting carrageenan seaweed, these farmers are able to improve their homes, enhance their diets and send their children to school, and in some countries. seaweed harvesting provides a way out of poverty for women who do not have access to other jobs. So, seaweed isn’t just a healthy snack or ingredient that makes our favourite foods better tasting and better for us. It’s revolutionizing dinner plates and economies around the world, restoring our oceans and improving lives.

Code Breaker

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 3 represents R and 23 represents X, so fill in R every time the figure 3 appears and X every time the figure 23 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny, recent events have shaken my resolve, and I have found myself losing my faith in Spirit. I never thought that I would be writing these words, but I have been let down and I feel angry with what is going on right now! Sandy V. Sandy! Hold on there please! When things go wrong the blame has to go somewhere, and Spirit isn’t always going to find the solution that you feel is right for you. They do, on the whole, a very good job, but just sometimes you never know why things happen until you look back at your journey so far and realise that everything that does happen is for some reason, maybe not revealed just now. Be angry, you have every right, but as for moving away from Spirit just because of current circumstances, think again...you have too much to lose and much in the future to be gained. Promise!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Many changes this week as minor irritating things have to be dealt with, and time is of the essence. Ceres calls time on Neptune and has a view to establishing clear cut solutions, when you have adapted a wait and see policy. When a request appears to be innocent, know that there is more in this than meets the eye, and just say no!

Ceres squares on Saturn, and all that has held you back just lately seems to be instantly forgettable since the truth has finally been told. Saturn is delaying and calculating whilst the energy of Ceres is to regulate and normalise. It’s great that you held out, but as for the apologies that you are due...well you may have to wait for those to come along!

A double action of the Sun brings a bittersweet energy into play. The squaring of Neptune heralds the start of the week followed by a conjunction of Ceres; with each bringing a different set of values into the equation right now. Love and finance often do not mix, so work at a compromise and keep a clear head so that , above all, you get all of your sums right.

Venus enters into your sign midweek, bringing you the love and understanding you need to move on! Now you have made a decision it is natural that you need the comfort that someone is going to take good care of you. Though this may be someone to watch over you, it is clear that channels of communication previously closed are now open for you.

With all the very best of intentions in the World there is always someone who manages to get hold of the wrong end of the stick; and someone has taken offence when none was meant. Mercury is in Gemini and there are always possibilities that the outcome could take things either way. Stick to your guns, be frank, cards out there on the table!

In your opposing sign of Sagittarius there seems to be a lot going on, so this week’s entry of Mercury is a focus for you, and should be an encouragement to get things done and dusted. You seem to be in the right place at the right time for a change, so use the luck of Jupiter to get things going your way and everything should now fall into place.

The Venus ingres in your sister planet of Taurus brings up a nostalgia that may affect greatly your most recent decision. It is quite clear that whilst somebody has been economical with the truth, the facts remain and are an indication of the changes that now have to be made. What’s chiefly needed is a clean sweep and a fresh start for all.

Balance your life so that you get the rest and relaxation that you deserve right now. The Venus conjunction with Uranus heralds a week in which you receive a lot of love and tender care from those who are concerned for you. Their good intentions, however, cannot compensate you for your current output, nor will they protect you from vulnerabilities.

The waxing Moon seems to be reflecting your

Venus conjuncts Uranus and you are about to break a golden rule not to get involved in family politics. Somebody has become very manipulating, and whilst Uranus is a planet of forward thinking, Venus likes to see love and light from all angles. Do not be led down the garden path when other solutions would favour everyone involved!

Many changes this week as minor irritating things have to be dealt with, and time is of the essence. Ceres calls time on Neptune and has a view to establishing clear cut solutions, when you have adapted a wait and see policy. When a request appears to be innocent, know that there is more in this than meets the eye, and just say no!

current mood, just as Mars enters into the fray this weekend. This suggests a clash with authority, and the start of a fight for your rights. See to it that you have detailed records of that fight your corner and accept absolutely no liability this time.

Make hay whilst the sun shines this week, as you get the green light that you have been waiting for. Your patience should be rewarded, but you have also seen that, just lately, others have not supported you when you needed their input. The Sun trines on Jupiter midweek and illuminates an escape route that may bring you just desserts.

Mercury indicates strongly the need to start to say what you mean and mean what you say. Silence has been a defence that you hid behind, but now things appear to be out in the open, it is time to voice your opinion. Saturn extends a chance to dig more deeply, but be warned that what you unearth is something you will have to live with!

Fitness column

No gym? No problem…. Workout at home Welcome to the first of our regular Rtn fitness column, aimed at giving tips and advice on the right and wrong ways to stay in shape this Summer. Most people when they plan to get fitter, often think the only option is to join a gym, which is a good idea in theory, but very often, after the initial couple of visits, the novelty wears thin and the gym membership card sits in the wallet or purse unused, or worse still gathering dust in a drawer. Well, the good news is, you don’t need an expensive gym membership to get into shape this summer, you can work out from the comfort and convenience of your own home, and you have a lot of options other than jumping on an exercise bike or treadmill. Here are a few useful and fairly simple tips to set up your home exercise routine without breaking the bank on equipment: CHOOSE A LOCATION Designate and declutter a spot in your home for your workouts. Don't automatically pick your basement or garage. If it's not an appealing space, you won't want to spend a lot of time there. Look for an area near where you often sit, along the lines of an empty corner or a spot near

your TV, for instance, could be perfect. Seeing your exercise place may inspire you to get up and move. You don't want it to be out of sight, out of mind. BUY THE NECESSITIES You don't need a lot of fancy gear as for under €80, you can buy some basics, such as an exercise mat, stability ball, resistance bands, and a few dumbbells. Or try to make your own list, based on what you want to do. What equipment do you need to support your goals? ADD SOME COMFORTS Whatever your favorite way to entertain yourself may be, get it ready to go, and then save it to enjoy during your workout. Make a playlist with songs you love. Download an audiobook you're excited about. Record a whole season of a great show on your DVR, or add it to your streaming queue. LOOK FOR ONLINE TRAINING Check the web for online fitness classes where you can find yoga, dance, strength training, and others that you watch from your iPad or computer. Some are free, some are pay-as-you-go, others require memberships and a monthly fee, so try these ideas: Curvy Yoga: Online classes or videos of yoga taught by, well, a curvy woman DailyBurn: Various types of exercise at different challenge levels Physique 57: Videos of a boutique fitness class that combines ballet, Pilates, and isometrics Pound Rockout Workout: Online version of a popular fitness class at Crunch gyms -- simulated drumming with lightly weighted drumsticks for cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, and plyometrics YogaGlo: Videos to download

interfere. That's why it's especially important to have a set time to work out. Find a time that feels best for you (in the morning, before dinner, in the evening) to ensure your success. At the start of every week, look at your calendar and slot in your workouts. If your preferred time slot won't work one day, find another time that will. IMPROVISE Once you start feeling energized and burning calories, you'll be even more motivated to keep going. When you're especially crunched for time, try this: Throw on some music and have a dance party whilst watching TV, or maybe when ironing, walk on the spot. When you're cleaning or pottering around, maximize your steps and be less efficient by carrying one bag of groceries in at a time. Make two trips up the stairs instead of one and you'll burn twice as many calories.

MAKE A RESERVATION When you exercise at home, it's easy to let life

40 per cent lifetime Ask the risk of hand arthritis Optician How to look great in glasses Q. What things should I consider when choosing a pair of glasses? A. Consider your face shape, colouring and style. Different style glasses will suit different face shapes and by choosing colours that match your hair colour and skin type, you can find the glasses which complement you perfectly. Think of your glasses as an extension of your wardrobe and an accessory to dress your face! This way you will complement your fashion sense with your glasses choice and set off your look perfectly.

Osteoarthritis, a painful condition in which the tissue between bones wears down, frequently affects people in old age and a new study finds that as many as 4 in 10 people may develop the condition in their hands. Among women, researchers found the lifetime risk was 47 per cent while for men it was about 25 per cent. Obese people also had 11 per cent higher lifetime risk than those who were not obese. Hand osteoarthritis can cause disability and problems with daily living, but is not often a subject of research, the study team writes in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology. Past research shows the lifetime risk for arthritis of the knee to be 45 per cent and 25 per cent for the hip, they write. ‘These findings indicate that symptomatic hand osteoarthritis is very common and affects a substantial proportion of the population in their lifetimes,’ lead author and epidemiologist at the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Jin Qin told Reuters Health. The researchers analysed data from a study of more than 2,000 people over age 45. The study collected data between 1999 and 2010, using selfreports of arthritis symptoms and X-ray images of the participants’ hands. Based on this group, researchers estimated the proportion of people who will develop osteoarthritis in at least one hand by age 85 to be 39.8 per cent. White people were at greater risk, at 41 per cent, for hand osteoarthritis than black people, with 29 per cent. Obese people had a lifetime risk of 47 per cent, compared to 36 per cent among the non-obese. ‘Some people with hand osteoarthritis have minimal or no symptoms. But for many, symptomatic hand osteoarthritis greatly affects their everyday lives, with few options for improving their symptoms,’ Dr. Fiona Watt, a research lecturer and honorary consultant rheumatologist at the University of

Oxford told Reuters Health. The pain can vary and tends to be worse the more people use their hands, flaring up during daily activity like carrying heavy shopping bags or typing on keyboards or phones, said Watt, who was not involved in the study. ‘Our hands are so important and we need to look after them,’ Watt said, adding that doing aerobic exercise and watching our weight can help protect against all types of osteoarthritis. ‘We know that injury can increase the risk of osteoarthritis,’ Watt said. ‘Although we can’t always prevent hand injuries, wearing supporting and protective gloves in occupations with heavy use of the hand is important.’ Preventing injuries and maintaining a healthy weight may lower the risk of osteoarthritis, Qin said. ‘Earlier diagnosis allows earlier use of interventions (e.g. physical/ occupational therapy), that may help manage symptoms, maintain better function and improve quality of life.’

EU free Wi-Fi for European towns with no internet coverage European Union institutions agreed this week to set aside €120 million in order to provide free Wi-Fi by 2020 to up to 8,000 municipalities in the EU in areas with no internet coverage. The initiative will be funded from the current €1 trillion EU budget, which runs from 2014 to 2020. Towns will have to apply to get the funds. The three EU institutions - the European Commission, the council of EU governments and the parliament - decided that funds for the free WiFi initiative will come from a limited review of the seven-year EU budget. This political compromise will need to be followed by a technical agreement over how the EU budget’s resources should be used to fund the new project. The EU budget cannot be increased, but funds can be partly shifted. New resources could also come from fines to companies or other one-off revenues.

Facebook wins German court appeal A court in Germany has ruled that the parents of a dead teenage girl have no right to access their daughter’s Facebook account. The 15-year-old was killed by a train in 2012 and her parents were trying to establish if she had committed suicide. They had sought access to her chat messages and posts in order to find out whether she had been bullied, but Facebook argued that opening up the account would compromise the privacy of the teenager’s contacts. A first court in Berlin had ruled in favour of the family, saying that the contents of the girl’s account could be seen as similar to letters and diaries, which “can be inherited regardless of their content”. But an appeals court has now ruled in favour of Facebook, saying that a contract existed between the girl and the social media company and that it ended with her death. The parents announced that they may yet launch a further appeal against the verdict. Facebook has recently faced increased scrutiny in Germany, especially over its handling of hate speech and fake news on the platform. The company earlier this year announced the introduction of new tools in Germany to combat fabricated stories. Meanwhile, German officials last month approved plans to levy heavy fines on social media firms if they fail to remove inappropriate comments and content quickly.

Facebook clarifies security settings Facebook has picked up on the fact that everyone thinks its security settings are confusing... So, it has rolled out a redesign based on user research to bring some much-needed clarity to its security page. Some of the changes include bringing important tools, like trusted contacts and twofactor authentication, to the top of the security and login page in a new “recommended” section that’s customized for you based on your current settings. And about that two-factor authentication option -- it’s no longer called “login approvals,” because it took research for Facebook to realise it should just call it what it is. They’ve also grouped similar tools togeth-

Overall, the changes make it easier to navigate through all of Facebook’s security options no matter your level of tech awareness. Motor Ombudsman contacted in record numbers The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has reported a record level of contacts to its dispute resolution service during the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2016. The body’s legally-trained and fully-impartial adjudicators, who look to conclude unresolved disputes quickly and fairly between consumers and its accredited businesses, which include thousands of garages across the UK, 39 vehicle manufacturers and 11 warranty providers, received over 11,300 contacts relating to its four Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved Motor Industry Codes of Practice. This equates to a 45% rise versus the same period in 2016. Providing information and assistance to businesses accounted for a further 484 enquiries to April, a 231% jump compared to a year earlier. The Vehicle Sales Code of Practice, which provides detailed guidelines for the sale of both new and used cars, as well as the supply of finance and warranties, saw the highest level of contacts out of any Code in The Motor Ombudsman’s portfolio. As awareness of the Code amongst UK motorists has continually grown following its introduction last September, the number of contacts has averaged over 50 per day since the start of the year, and reached a monthly record of 1,259 last month. Similarly, The Motor Ombudsman witnessed the highest ever volume in a single four-week period, with April recording 3,343 contacts, rising above the monthly average of 3,259 seen during the first quarter of 2017. The largest source of customer concerns brought to the attention of The Motor Ombudsman since April have related to the quality of a used or new vehicle at the time of purchase, the standard of work carried out, and warranties. An average of 95% of the contacts received every month are successfully concluded without the need for a case to be raised thanks to The Motor Ombudsman’s highly experienced adjudication team. In addition, the volume of cases requiring a legally binding final decision from its in-house ombudsman has ranged between 7% to 14% for the first four months of the year. Holly McAllister, Head of Customer Service and Quality at The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Everincreasing awareness amongst consumers and automotive businesses of the value that The Motor Ombudsman offers has resulted in a significant uplift in the level of contacts that we have received since the start of 2017. The arrival of the Vehicle Sales Code has equally meant that we can now formally adjudicate on issues relating to the sale of both of new and used cars.” Holly adds: “Case volumes as a proportion of contacts remain low which demonstrates the great efforts that all parties are going to in order to resolve any disagreements before needing formal adjudication which is very encouraging for all involved.”

Dashcams help in fight against dangerous drivers Dashcams were originally launched to protect drivers against fraudulent insurance claims and to determine who’s at fault for accidents, but today they’re being used to help dwindling police forces catch dangerous drivers in the act. North Wales Police became the first force in the UK to create a system for the public to send video footage of appalling driving caught on camera by dashcams, helmet cameras and mobile phones. And according to auto magazine AutoExpress, over 100 clips have been uploaded to the new database and 80 penalties have been issued in the first six months of Operation Snap. The police have been using the public’s video footage to convict dangerous and offending drivers for some time, with the first person jailed using dashcam video evidence in December 2015. However, police forces which have been hit with tightening budgets and fewer traffic cops in recent years - have struggled to vet all the clips sent to them due to limited resources. North Wales Police calculated that it takes up to 15 hours of police time to charge offenders under old rules that meant they had to treat footage in a similar way to eye-witness accounts, including interviews and masses of paperwork - time it doesn’t have with fewer

staff members on its books than seven years ago. But after finding a loophole in how speed camera clips are used as the only evidence needed to catch limit-breaking motorists, it decided to apply the same process to the footage captured of dangerous drivers on dashcams to reduce charge times. As a result, the process takes closer to 15 minutes, with clips being uploaded by members of the public with a short description on North Wales Police’s website. Officers can then review each video case and - as with speeding fines - send a driving penalty notice to the guilty party who can choose to accept it or dispute it in court. All public-generated video footage can now be used by North Wales Police to target offences including dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, contravening solid white lines, mobile phone use, improper control of vehicle and contravening red traffic lights. The force is also calling on vulnerable road users, including horse riders and cyclists, to send in their footage of motorists driving too close to them. At the launch of Operation Snap last year, assistant chief constable Jeremy Vaughan said: “The operation will enable our communities to

help us assist in a key policing priority, to continue to keep the roads of South Wales safe. “Our officers will still be policing the roads in our force area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but we know that members of the public are keen to help, and I am pleased that with the support of Go Safe, we can provide an easier way to submit footage and images either whilst travelling as a passenger, or using the footage of dash cams that can submitted at a later date when the driver has finished their journey.” According to AutoExpress, just two attempts have been made to appeal penalties that have been awarded through Operation Snap, both of which failed. The service will undoubtedly help police forces that have seen their staff numbers drop in the last seven years. Home Office data released last year showed that there has been a significant decline in the

number of traffic police units patrolling our roads since 2010. The figures showed that there were 27% fewer officers in 2015 than five years previous, with North Wales Police losing 20% of its traffic police staff in that period - a decline from 88 to 68 police men and women. South Wales Police - which posted a 21% loss of traffic staff last year - is the only other force to adopt the new system, meaning the nation’s remaining 47 forces are still using the more time-consuming methodology to catch dangerous drivers with dashcam clips. Sergeant John Roberts told the motoring magazine: “Operation Snap isn’t about catching people; it’s about changing behaviour and hopefully acting as a deterrent against bad driving. If drivers think twice before overtaking on double lines because they think they might be reported, that makes the roads a safer place.”

Now it’s driverless trucks Governments must consider ways to manage the transition to driverless trucks in order to avoid potential social disruption from job losses, says a new report published by the International Transport Forum (ITF) with three partner organisations. Self-driving trucks will help save costs, lower emissions and make roads safer. They could also address the shortage of professional drivers faced by road transport industry, the study says. But automated trucks could reduce the demand for drivers by 50-70% in the US and Europe by 2030, with up to 4.4 million of the projected 6.4 million professional trucking jobs becoming redundant, according to one scenario. Even if the rise of driverless trucks dissuades newcomers from trucking, over 2 million drivers in the US and Europe could be directly displaced, according to scenarios examined for the report which makes four recommendations to help manage the transition to driverless road freight: 1. Establish a transition advisory board to give advice on labour issues. 2. Consider a temporary permit system to manage the speed of adoption. 3. Set international standards, road rules and vehicle regulations for self-driving trucks. 4. Continue pilot projects with driverless trucks to test vehicles, network technology and communications protocols. These recommendations were agreed jointly by organisations representing truck manufacturers, truck operators and transport workers’ unions, under the auspices of an intergovernmental organisation. This broad coalition of stakeholders lends the call to action particular weight. The report was prepared jointly by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the road transport’s industry’s global body, in a project led by the International Transport Forum, a Paris-based intergovernmental organisation linked to the OECD. José Viegas, Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum (ITF) said:

“Driverless trucks could be a regular presence on many roads within the next ten years. Self‑driving trucks already operate in controlled environments like ports or mines. Trials on public roads are under way in many regions including the United States and the European Union. Manufacturers are investing heavily into automation, and many governments are actively reviewing their regulations. Preparing now for potential negative social impact of job losses will mitigate the risks in case a rapid transition occurs.” The ITF is an intergovernmental organisation with 57 member countries. The only global body for all modes, it acts as policy think tank and organises the annual summit of transport ministers. Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), said: “Harmonisation of rules across countries is critical for maximising the gains from driverless truck technology. Automated trucks are clearly not a national issue, as they should be able to move smoothly across borders. We need international standards, legislation and processes to obtain exemptions from road rules that are appropriate for self-driving trucks. Otherwise we risk having a patchwork of rules and regulations, which could hinder manufacturers and road users from investing in automated vehicles.” ACEA is the advocate for the automobile industry in Europe, representing the 15 major manufacturers of cars, trucks, vans and buses with production sites in the European Union. Christian Labrot, President, International Road Transport Union (IRU), said: “Autonomous trucks will bring many benefits to society, from cost savings and lower emissions to safer roads. Autonomous vehicles will also help the haulage sector deal with the current shortage of drivers in many parts of the world. However we have to remember the dedicated drivers of today will need to be retrained tomorrow and we must keep attracting professionals into road transport. We all need to work together for a smooth transition to driverless technology.” IRU is the global industry association for road transport, representing truck, bus, coach and taxi operators, with members and activi-

ties in more than 100 countries. Steve Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, said: “Automation in trucking demands a managed and just transition. We strongly welcome the report’s recommendation that trade unions must be part of any such process. We must avoid excessive hardship for truck drivers and ensure the gains from the technology are fairly shared across society. Self-driving

trucks threaten to disrupt the careers and lives of millions of professional truck drivers. This report is a timely investigation into how that transition could happen. Its recommendations will help governments to ensure a just transition for affected drivers.” The International Transport Workers’ Federation is a global association of around 700 unions representing over 4.5 million transport workers from some 150 countries.

Schindler’s heaven Huddersfield town win a 185 million pound penalty shoot out, in a match widely billed as the most lucrative game of the season. German Christian Schindler scored the decisive spot kick to send Huddersfield Town back to the top flight of English football for the first time in 45 years, with a 4-3 victory over Reading on penalties. Huddersfield last appeared in the top division when Ted Heath was prime minister and T-Rex were top of the charts and only last season they finished 19th in the Championship. But in a few short months time, this modest group of players will take their place alongside football giants Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City in the most famous league in the World, the English Premier league. With a budget of 185 million pounds from TV rights for the winning team, the championship play-off was a tense, nervous affair for both Huddersfield and opponents Reading, who had more recent memories of the premier league, having been relegated in 2013. The stakes made the drama gripping even if the action became scruffy. Neither goalkeeper made a save until just after half-time, when John Swift burst from midfield and unleashed a powerful drive from 20 yards that Ward batted away. After 90 minutes the teams remained deadlocked, the suspense thrillingly hard to bear. Garath McCleary produced gasps in the dying moments of the first period of extra-time when he fired just wide from the edge of the box. Five minutes from the end of the second period Kasey Palmer delivered a low cross from the right to Nahki Wells, who swivelled near the penalty spot before dragging a shot wide. And so the contest progressed to the ultimate tie-breaker.

Yann Kermorgant netted for Reading from the first spot‑kick, then Chris Löwe and Williams scored, before Al-Habsi saved from Hefele. Liam Kelly and Wells safely scored before there was another twist, as Moore sent his shot into the stands. Mooy converted to draw the teams level again before Ward, on loan from Liverpool, saved Obita’s low effort. Schindler, whose arrival from 1860 Munich for £1.8m last summer made him the club’s record signing, stepped up to write himself into Huddersfield folklore. Huddersfield club chairman, Dean Hoyle, took a gamble when he appointed German, David Wagner as manager in November 2015 and 19 months later that paid off spectacularly at

Go fish! THE PORT of Fuengirola has played host to its 15th ever children’s fishing contest, organised by the town council and El Puerto Sports Partnership. The event was launched by Fuengirola’s Councillor for Sports, Pedro Cuevas, accompanied by Rafael Lebron and Cristobal Bosquet, president and vice-president of the Sports Fishing Society El Puerto, respectively. Cuevas explained, “this Saturday the Department of Sports will help celebrate the end of Fuengirola’s 175th anniversary with a fishing contest for children, which is a tradition now in its 15th year.” Speaking before the event, Lebron explained, “with the help of the council we are going to give each child a medal and diploma and I think it will be a lovely day for them and give them memories they will cherish forever.” Bousquet added “we usually get around 100 children taking part and give also give them all a t-shirt.” The event’s aim is to encourage fishing among the youngest and a monitor was on hand to explain how to put to use hooks and bait, amongst other lessons. All fish caught were released back into the sea as fishing is not allowed in the port. Children are taught about the type of fish they have caught before they are released. Children were given a fishing rod, bait and all the necessary equipment during the contest, which was aimed at those aged between 6 and 12. Cuevas described the event as “a way to get children involved in a sport like fishing.”

Wembley as Huddersfield emerged triumphant from a tense play-off final to crown a rise that even their own fans did not dare predict at the start of this season. The fairytale promotion has the potential to transform the Yorkshire club whose budget this season was “much less than [the reported] £12m”, according to Wagner. Promotion to the Premier League is worth at least £170m. “I need to take a few weeks to get my head around it,” Wagner said. “I will have a lot of phone calls to make.” Reading’s manager, Jaap Stam, said his players must use the pain of defeat to drive them towards happier times. “It’s difficult to take but it needs to be difficult,” he said.

A slam dunk

FUENGIROLA has played host to the final phases of the junior provincial basketball championships at the town’s Juan Gomez Juanito pavilion. Commenting before the event, Pedro Cuevas, Councillor for Sports, said, “I want to thank the Malaga basketball delegation and the Salliver Basketball Club for making our city the centre of these three final phases; we are very proud and we will do our best so that all goes well and the event can be enjoyed by Fuengirola’s basketball fans.” For his part, Ricardo Bandres, the Malaga delegate of the Andalucian Basketball Federation, said, “it is no coincidence that

almost every weekend we play finals in Fuengirola, due to the facilities the town hall has.” He added, “The Federation Cup is very important to us because the best teams from Malaga participate in each of the three categories.” Angel Saura, the sports director of the Salliver Basketball club, explained the event was a first, saying, “this is the first time in Fuengirola three finals have been held in a single facility and that’s because we have three courts to accommodate them.” He also praised the initiative of “having male and female players in the same team, showing our work on equality.”

sport Valverde named as new Barca coach Barcelona have appointed Ernesto Valverde as their head coach on a two-year deal, with an option for a third. Former Barca forward Valverde announced last week that he was leaving Athletic Bilbao after four years in charge. He replaces Luis Enrique, who revealed in March that he would leave the club - who finished second in La Liga - at the end of his three-year contract. Enrique led Barcelona to the treble in his first season, the domestic double in 2016 and the Copa del Rey this year. They beat Alaves 3-1 in Sunday's final - his last match in charge. Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu praised 53-year-old Valverde's "ability, judgement, knowledge and experience", adding: "He promotes young players and he plays the Barca way." Valverde has the credentials to be successful. He is an experienced and intelligent coach with good organisational and communication skills, implementing a fast-paced style of play which earned the regular approval of the most important figure in the club's history, his former manager Johan Cruyff. Apart from Athletic Bilbao, he has also managed Villarreal, Valencia and Barça’s city rivals Espanyol in a varied coaching career that included two years in Greece with Olympiakos. Valverde also had a two-year spell as a Barcelona player in the late 1980s and will now return to the Camp Nou after a 27-year absence. Despite those plus points, however, Valverde will receive little more than a lukewarm welcome from many fans, who are sceptical of his abilities to master the internal politics inherent at such a huge club. There are fears that his understated personality will see him become a 'yes man' to an increasingly unpopular board of directors, lacking the strength of character to reinvigorate a team who have been treading water for too long. When Luis Enrique announced his decision to resign, a poll over the identity of the new coach by newspaper Mundo Deportivo saw Valverde receive just 8.4% of the votes (Jorge Sampaoli came first), so it's clear his arrival is not being universally acclaimed. It doesn't help that his final season in Bilbao yielded a pretty disappointing seventh-place finish and an embarrassing Europa League exit against Cypriot minnows Apoel Nicosia. If he doesn't make a good start, patience will be in short supply.

Tiger Woods insists no alcohol involved in arrest Puffy eyed, unshaven and disheveled, Tiger Woods mugshot photo, taken after his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving at 3am by Florida police, is not the best evidence of his innocence. However, Woods says alcohol was "not involved" in his arrest while driving in Florida early on Monday. The player, who was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), blamed "an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication". "I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions," he said. Police released the mugshot of Woods, looking unshaven and unkempt, following his arrest in the town of Jupiter. "I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications," he said. "I didn't realise the mix of medications had affected me so strongly." He added: "I would like to apologise with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too." Police records show the 41-year-old golfer was pulled over at about 03:00 local time near his home in Jupiter and later taken into custody. He was released from Palm Beach County jail at 10:30 local time. The record says that he was released "on his own recognisance", meaning he promised in writing to co-operate with future legal proceedings. Woods has been recovering from back surgery. In his most recent comment about his health, he wrote that the surgery had relieved terrible pain and that he hadn't "felt this good in years". The 14-time major champion's personal life came under scrutiny in 2009 when he was charged with careless driving outside his Florida home. He later admitted to having had extra-marital affairs and made a frank public apology. He said he had received professional help and planned to undergo further therapy. The golfer lost several sponsors over the scandal and took a break from competitive competition. This latest picture will haunt him throughout these proceedings and beyond. This is someone who has put back together his public life after that epic fall from grace with all the news of the extramarital affairs that broke in 2009.
