It’s party time!

by Jimmy Grayling MARBELLA residents and thousands of visitors will this weekend find themselves in extra party mood with the glitzy resort’s San Bernabe feria reaching its climax. Among the most eagerly-anticipated Costa del Sol summer events, the festival includes daytime events on Paseo de la Alameda and Avenida del Mar near the city’s Historic Centre, where 16 temporary bars and a series of stages are set up. By night, the crowds relocate to a massive fairground adjacent to the La Cañada shopping centre, where revellers dance

the night away in a series of purpose built casetas, temporary wooden structures which house bars and DJs. A free bus service is provided to ship partygoers between the two venues. Traditional Flamenco dress, local music, wines and food also play key roles in the celebrations, with the best of Andalucian flavour on show. The feria will also operate under video surveillance for the first time this year as council bosses up security in the wake of recent events in the UK and other countries. It comes after the spectacular was opened by Spain’s nation-

al basketball coach Sergio Scariolo, the Italian spending much of his time in Marbella after buying property in the area. He delivered a stirring speech missing sports and politics to a packed marina earlier in the week as he declared “Marbella was in the fourth division but has now returned to the first,” to huge applause before the traditional coronation of the festival’s king and queen and firework display on El Faro Beach. The event continues until next Monday, with a full programme available at http://www.marbella.es/fiestas/ fiestas/san-bernabe/12-san-bernabe/553/programa-de-sanbernabe-2017.html.

€480,000 promenade facelift by Sally Underwood FUENGIROLA’S Council has invested almost half a million euros to improve the image of its promenade, installing recycling stations along its entire coastline. A total of nine stations have been put in place, in addition to an existing four, and will become operational throughout the week. These bins allow rubbish to be easily removed from the street, reducing odours, and improving the town’s cleanliness and aesthetic. The council took the move after discovering the town’s existing bins were almost always full and more were needed. Pedro Vega, Councillor for Cleaning, explained, "the implementation of this proposal, which includes the installation or extension of thirteen new stations: nine on the seafront and four in various parts of the town, is an improvement not only for residents and businesses but also for tourists, as they will benefit from the town’s improved image.” He added, “we have paid for this project with a surplus from a 2015 budget.” The recycling bins include containers for solid waste, paper and carboard,

glass and packaging. Vega said, "we thought it was appropriate to put the stations all along the coast because it is one of the busiest areas of the town where people come for walks, to do sports,” adding, “the renovation has allowed us to use a piece of land to

provide a dozen more parking spaces.” He went on, "in 2001 Fuengirola Council became a pioneer in installing this type of infrastructure, a model that many other municipalities now use.” He called on “residents and visitors to use them responsibly.”

Greenpeace in Spain protests Trump climate decision Dozens of Greenpeace supporters gathered at the gates of the Embassy of the United States of America in Madrid last Friday to protest U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement. Protesters accused Trump of becoming a ‘global threat’ and ‘harming the planet’ in signs they held Friday morning at the entrance of the embassy in central Madrid. Greenpeace's director in Spain Mario Rodriguez said last Thursday's announcement will require U.S. civil society and companies — as well as the rest of the world — to work harder to fight global warming. ‘The battle against climate change is irreversible,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Resistance will be maintained because the United States is much more than just the White House and Trump.’ Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, where the landmark global climate agreement was agreed in December 2015, said the decision by Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of the deal was ‘a mistake that would have dramatic consequences.’ ‘That incredible diplomatic achievement could not have been secured without the decisive role of the United States of America. That is why President Trump is committing a mistake with dramatic and fatal consequences,’ she said. ‘Regardless of President Trump’s decision, the great cities of the world, in particular the twelve American C40 cities, remain resolutely committed to doing what needs to be done to implement the Paris agreement,’ she said, referring to 91 global cities that are have vowed to fight global warming.

Women in business FUENGIROLA’S Council have launched a campaign “Here works a woman,” to highlight and promote women in business. by Sally Underwood The scheme is designed to pay tribute to the entrepreneurial work of the town’s women, which contributes greatly to the local economy. Ana Mata, Councillor for Equality, and Ricardo von Wichmann, Coucillor for Trade, have worked together on the campaign, with Mata commenting, “the Department for Equality works 365 days a year with all areas of the town council and my colleagues are very aware we need to promote equality between women and men in everything we do.” She added, “on this occasion, the Department for Trade has launched an initiative aimed at women working in local commerce, highlighting that we often do not notice women holding positions of responsibility and running their own business.” She explained, “there is still a discrepancy in SMEs, with more men than women still opening businesses. We have to continue to offer measures to help women take on their own business.” She added, “we want to not only fight gender violence but also work to help women into the world of work, providing not only the information necessary to start a business, but also training to give them the right tools to tackle a job… now there will be a sign up in every

shop in Fuengirola where there is a woman working, but there is still a long way to go to achieve real equality between men and women.” Ricardo von Wichmann explained, "the reality today is that many of the businesses that are opening in our town are either run by women or mostly employ women, this means that women, who until a few years ago were stuck doing work that went unrecognised such as housework, are now getting

€300 million to solve drought crisis THE WATER BOARD is considering investing hundreds of millions of euros to help Malaga’s towns with their ongoing drought problems. Officials are looking at various solutions, including diverting water supplies from the Guadalhorce reservoir or building overflow reservoirs to house excess water for times of low supply. Current soaring temperatures are exacerbating the already precarious drought situations, with farmers on the Costa del Sol are now being forced to cease watering on certain days. Rincon de la Victoria has this week registered temperatures of over 34 degrees Celsius, while Malaga and Velez Malaga have stayed at 33 degrees throughout the day. The scorching weather has prompted a wave of around 12 fires, with firefighters battling flames in Malaga, Cartama, Ardales, Archidona, Ahaurines, Teba and Alora.

involved in different types of companies in all sectors.” He added, "there are always ways of women reaching the highest levels and we are now seeing big companies increasingly employing more women because of the methodical way they think.” He concluded, “every activity the council organises has at least 50% involvement from women, and in the case our trade campaign, “Prizes for shopping in Fuengirola,” 68% of the shops involved were run by women.

Have money, will travel

MIJAS Council has launched a travel card campaign, designed to help locals and visitors save money on their public transport. Nuria Rodriguez, Councillor for Transport, has presented a campaign to promote the use of the cards offered by the Transport Consortium of Malaga which provides economic savings on each trip. She explained, “we have noticed locals do not generally have this card which offers significant reductions on trips over the course of a month. That is why we want to publicise it so that the people of Mijas not only use the card but also public transport, so that we save money and take care of the environment at the same time.” The council has now places information posters and adverts around the town and in Mijas Comunicacion, letting locals know about the advantages of the card. To apply for a card, which costs €1.80, those interested can apply at the Transport Department at the council. Card owners then must top up with a minimum of €5, which will be used to pay for discounted tickets on local public transport.

Archaeological discovery

The workers are looking for buried artefacts

by Sally Underwood ARCHAEOLOGISTS have broken ground at the site of the Costa del Sol’s proposed “Great Park,” seeing if they can find any Roman treasures. Mijas’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, and the Councillor for Heritage, Fuensanta Lima, also visited the site to try to find any remains on the plot which will become a cultural highlight on the Costa del Sol. Maldonado, "we will be valuing the remains that we find to work out their cultural importance. This is the next step in creating what will be the largest park in Malaga… a recreational area for the whole family where residents have a say in what they want the space to look like.” The area being tested occupies around 16,000 square meters. As it is a protected area near the site of Finca de Acevedo, it is expected Roman remains may be found. Fuensanta Lima commented, "this work is very important because we will be able to protect the heritage of Mijas and Andalucia. We are working with the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics and with the Junta de Andalucia, which is speeding up the process because every move we make must be authorised by the Junta.”

For his part, the technician responsible for the work, Juan Jose de la Rubia, explained "the work is divided into two phases." The first is magnetic geophysical prospecting to obtain preliminary information to see if there are buried walls and then from there a radar survey will determine with much greater accuracy the existence of any archaeological remains. The work is expected to take around two weeks, depending on the results from the second stage of testing. The project is employing 15 workers who are on basic income. Councillor Laura Moreno, said, "they are doing everything manually because you cannot use heavy machinery to get samples, which would damage or erode the land.” The “Great Park” is a project which would see the Costa del Sol’s largest park used for recreation, sports, nature events and tourism. Mijas’s Council has encouraged locals to suggest what they would like the park to include by emailing elgranparque@mijas. es. They are also encouraging children to send in drawing of what they would like the park to look like. According to Maldonado, “we still don’t know what the park will look like but it will certainly be the creation of the people of Mijas.”

Marbella arms dealer dies ADNAN KHASHOGGI, a Saudi Arabian arms dealer, who lived and worked in Marbella in the 1980s, has died in London aged 81. The Stanford educated son of a doctor was well-connected with the Saudi royal family and had trafficked arms between Europe and the Middle East, making enough money to live a millionaire’s lifestyle on the Costa del Sol with his house in Benahavis and on his yacht, named, “Nabila.” He rode high on his wealth and notoriety for much of the 1980s, attending star studded parties and even lending Nabila to be used on the James Bond fil, Never Say Never Again. His world unravelled in 1989 though when three banks repossessed his home and he eventually went to prison accused of money laundering after doing deals with the ex-Filipino dictator, Ferdinand Marcos. After prison, Khashoggi retired to Riyadh, travelling to various cities in Europe and finally dying in London.

Cool for school

Politicians from the area gather to check out the new school

by Sally Underwood LAS LAGUNAS has gained a new school in the form of the private “Ark Christian School” in El Juncal. Juan Carlos Maldonado, the Mayor of Mijas, Hipolito Zapico, Councillor for Education and Roy Perez, Councillor for Foreign People, attended this week’s official opening of the college which will host 170 students from 10 nationalities. The centre offers classes to student aged between 3 and 18 years and "will allow those enrolled to receive an education based on the English model but integrated with the Mijas community, something which will further strengthen ties with the foreign community. It will also bring more life to the area, adding to its value,” according to Mr Maldonado. He added the school, “is an example or the rich culture of our municipality and demonstrates the advantages of private and public body collaboration.”

Mr Zapico spoke to various students during his visit, explaining, “it is important we are involved in this kind of school to see whether we can put in place language exchange programmes with other public schools in Mijas, encouraging children’s growth and creating a link between different educational systems.” He added that Mijas has about 125 different nationalities and that the new

school was an example of the “multicultural municipality.” The UK consul to Malaga, Charmain Arbouin, who also attended the event said the school was significant so that “children living here don’t live in bubbles, only socialising with those from their own country. This centre gives children the chance to get to know other cultures, something which is essential.”

Beach bunnies THE MUNICIPAL volleyball school has moved to the beaches of Calahonda to encourage enthusiasts to get involved in the sport. Nuria Rodriguez, Councillor for Sport, explained the sessions will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5pm to 9pm, commenting, “for the third consecutive year we have moved volleyball classes to the beach. It is a good way to promote the sport during the summer months.” The initiative has seen the collaboration of the Department of Beaches, which has supplied three tracks, dividing participants into different age categories. Isoil Perez, President of the Municipal School of Volleyball, said the change of terrain means players must change their techniques, explaining, "we change several aspects when working in sand. The ball is different… although the technique itself is similar, but you have to adapt it to the surface and contact with the ball. Another aspect is the formation, which changes to two plyers on two, which also benefits players when working on hard courts.” Nuria Rodriguez has invited not only all locals, but also all the visitors who spend their summers in the area over an extended period, to come and have a go at the sport, which is even more fun on the beach. She concluded, “this activity is designed for anyone who wants to play sports on the beach, whether tourists or residents. They only have to go to the Department for Sports and register.”

Lizard survives Spain – UK flight hiding inside broccoli

Staff at an Asda store in Lanarkshire were shocked when they opened a vegetable delivery recently. Upon opening the crate – from Spain – colleagues found an Iberian wall lizard hiding inside the broccoli. The lizard, who has now been named Brock, was alive and well although severely dehydrated. Brock was retrieved from the store by animal welfare officers who are now nursing him back to health. Fiona Henderson, from the Scottish SPCA, told the English press: ‘The poor wee guy was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed from his adventures.’ ‘As he’s not a native reptile. Brock couldn’t be rehomed like our normal rescues. In this case, he’s gone to live in a multi-habitat vivarium at the Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue centre with reptile expert Nick Martin.’ ‘The vivarium is designed to mimic Brock’s habitat as closely as possible and it seems he’s settled in perfectly well despite his broccoli ordeal.’

Help for the most vulnerable

participants at the course in the TRH Hotel Mijas

by Sally Underwood MIJAS’S Council has teamed up with the Red Cross to provide a “sharing experiences” workshop aimed at bringing students and companies together. The event, which took place at the TRH Hotel Mijas, involved several companies from Mijas and Fuengirola, students, the Department of Social Services, and the Red Cross. The Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona, attended the workshop, which was developed within

the "Corporate Social Plan for Labour Integration”, carried out by the Red Cross Spain. The session lasted around two hours, teaching companies and students to value people in the work place and not put in place prejudices based on age, gender or ethnicity. Mari Carmen commented, "for us it was essential that students and managers of these companies get to know each other personally, and see first-hand what the Red Cross is trying to achieve. This programme is a way to remove stereotypes, because there is always more to a person than meets

the eye and that is want we want people to learn.” The course kicked off by teaching the importance of incorporating those at risk or social exclusion into the work place, helping them integrate into companies and society. The Red Cross has therefore developed a series of courses in becoming a waiter or a valet within various hotels in Mijas to help those most at risk of being left out of the work place. The organisers say they hope the workshop would encourage managers of hotels to overlook stereotypes and therefore help the most vulnerable into the work place.

Persecuted girls lead pride parade by Sally Underwood MARIA JIMENA RICO and Shaza Ismail, the two girls who were held in the Middle East over to their sexuality, have led Torremolinos’ gay pride parade. The event, which was also attended by Dana International; the first transsexual winner of Eurovision, highlights equality. The girls were chosen to lead the parade because their sexuality “almost cost them their freedom.” The young couple who were imprisoned in Turkey after fleeing homophobic oppression in Dubai, have also recently met with Albert Rivera, leader of the political party, Ciudadanos, to discuss women’s equality. The girls say they spoke with the senior politician as a “first step” towards highlighting the “struggle” for equality amongst the LGBT community “in many countries”. The women, who are 28 and 22, became embroiled in an internationallycovered ordeal after flying to Dubai to visit Shaza’s mother, who was supposedly sick. Once there, however, it became clear Miss Ismail’s Egyptian father wanted her to face trial for her sexuality, which is punishable by death in Dubai. The couple fled to Georgia, where the

man ambushed them and tore up their travel documents. Police intervened and took the girls to the Turkish border, where they crossed over. Turkish police soon intercepted them though, and imprisoned them on suspicion of terrorism without access to legal advice or phones. The Spanish Government became involved when Ms Rico’s family reported her missing after receiving voicemail saying she feared for her life. The authorities tracked the girls to a prison in Istanbul and quickly secured their release.

The couple, who say they are “shattered” by their experience, are now engaged, planning on getting a dog, and have both been offered positions at the Funky Buddha Beach, a club in Marbella. They have continued to share details of their ordeal, however, which they say involved being “spat at” and questioned about their sex-life by police in Turkey. The couple say they now want to highlight persecution of homosexuality.

Officials investigate bee sting death OFFICERS from the Civil Protection Service are investigating whether the death of a 70-year-old Norwegian man in Mijas who was killed by multiple bee stings is due to negligent beekeeping. The investigators are checking whether the 150 hives near where the man was found, which are regulated by the Junta de Andalucia, comply with the government’s own beekeeping regulations. The man’s body was found by a female dog walker a day after he went missing. The man was said to be wearing a t-shirt and shorts, and was found with his top covering his head and multiple bee stings to his body. Investigators are not sure why the man was stung but say it is certain he walked past a hive, was stung, tried to flee but died about 400 metres down the path. Pathologists have said they cannot be certain whether the man suffered from an allergy but say he was stung enough times that a lethal amount of apitoxin entered his blood stream, prompting anaphylactic shock. In 2005 the Ministry for the Environment published a map of areas in public forests suitable for beekeeping, as well as guidance on appropriate signage and the number of hives which is “sustainable.” The department also published a safety manual ensuring hives must be signposted with a yellow poster warning of the presence of bees. In addition, the hives must be be fenced in and cannot be positioned within 400 metres of public buildings, 100 metres from housing or 200 metres from motorways.

€200,000 facelift by Sally Underwood WORKS have begun to Calle Benaojan in La Cala de Mijas following hundreds of thousands of euros of investment. Mijas’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, visited the site alongside Jose Carlos Martin, Councillor for Infrastructure, and the La Cala Benaojan Street Neighbourhood Association. The road, which will be remodelled over the next three months, “has been requested by residents for some time,” according to Martin, who added, “we are going to increase the street’s value, not just in an aesthetic sense, but also in terms of its infrastructure. This will upgrade its look for toursist who visit.” According to locals the area had not been upgraded since the beginning of the 1960s. Martin explained, “we started work to the road on Monday, and will completely renovate its storm and sewage drains, which will be separated from the water supply, electricity and telecommunications lines.” Once finished, the road will feature two and a half metre wide pavements, new road lighting and plant features, as well as urban furniture. Francisco Sepulveda, president of the neighbourhood association, said he was thrilled with the news of the upgrade, explaining, “we have pushed for this with various councils up until now and fortunately now they are going to solve the problem.” Calle Benaojan joins Calle Antequera, Paseo de Andalucia and Calle Limonar in receiving a facelift. The council now plans to also adapt kerbs for those with reduced moility throughout the town’s centre, and also reasphalt seversal roads.

Pandemonium at Spain’s ports Spain’s more than 6,000 stevedores went on strike on Monday to protest against potential job losses in the wake of the ports reform, which was demanded by the European Union and passed through parliament in mid-May Paralysing the country’s 39 cargo ports, workers have called for additional off-hour work stoppages on June 19, 21 and 23, plus a full 48-hour strike from June 14 to the morning of June 16. Workers are also performing scheduled stoppages on Friday, June 9, threatening the country’s main export sectors like industrial machinery and cars. The government said minimum services were being upheld at ports to ensure perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables were getting through and passenger services were not disrupted. Some container shipping companies have rerouted cargo due to the strikes. Alternative destinations for shipping companies include Portugal, Morocco and Malta. The ports reform, which aims to crack down on closed-shop hiring in a heavily unionised sector as demanded by the European Union, was passed through parliament in mid-May after a series of setbacks and clashes between political parties. Workers broke off subsequent talks with port representatives over how to implement the new law in a disagreement over safeguarding more than 6,000 jobs.

Gas blast injures woman A 55-YEAR-OLD woman has sustained second degree burns to her face and torso after an explosion at a restaurant in Nerja, on the Costa del Sol. Media reports say the woman, who owns the business, has burns to 12% of her body following the blaze which destroyed both floors of the building. She is said to be in a severe, but not critical, condition at the burns unit at Malaga’s Regional Hospital, where she was transferred to from Axarquia’s Comarcal Hospital. The blast, which was caused by a gas leak in a butane bottle, took place on Calle Pintada in the heart of the town. Fire fighters, Guardia Civil and Local Police officers dashed to the scene at around 1.30pm, and managed to get the flames under control. Investigators from the Judicial Institute of Armed Police then entered to work out the cause, which shattered windows in surrounding premises. Elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, a forest fire in Benagalbon was extinguished with the help of two helicopters and 27 infoca workers after five hectares of scrubland and olive grove caught fire.

Money for new council cars

Martin and Rodriguez show off one of the council’s new SUVs

MIJAS Council has spent over a quarter of a million euros replacing part of its operational services car fleet. The investment has allowed the council to buy 15 new cars, the first two of which were delivered safely this week. Jose Carlos Martin, Councillor for Operative Services, and Nuria Rodriguez, Councillor for Parks, took receipt of the two SUVs , which are replacing the council’s old vehicles, which had now become obsolete. These first two cars alone cost €33,000. According to Martin, “we will continue to upgrade the fleet as much as we can because newer cars ensure greater security and efficiency for our workers.” Rodriguez added the council was responsible for 147 square kilometres of land, incorporating both beach and forest areas, and the council needs the appropriate vehicles to cover this ground. She explained, “we realised many of our vehicles were very old. For the comfort and safety of our workers we will replace them.” The investment was made through State Central Purchasing, a mechanism the council has recently signed up to, which “sets us apart, allowing us to reduce costs, as the tender is put out nationally, allowing us to recruit from a larger area,” according to Martin.

Finger paints: the children painted their own fish with hand prints

by Sally Underwood OVER 200 schoolchildren have taken part in activities organised to commemorate World Environment Day. The Councillor for Infrastructures and Tourism, Ana Velasco, explained "this year the activities revolve around the marine environment and beaches, and we have worked with Aula del Mar de Malaga to do this.” The activities, which took place on La

Rada Beach, included children carrying out experiments with sea water and sand, learning about water cycles and the effects of climate change on shells and why a boat floats on water. Students also learnt about how sea turtles travel through an exhibition and also how to give first aid to the creatures, as well as other marine animals. The day gathered students from

primary schools Maria Espinosa, Antonio Machado, Garcia Lorca, Sierra Bermeja and Simon Fernandez who were divided into groups and taught how to support sea life across Andalucia’s various coastal habitats. The event’s organisers say they not only wanted to commemorate World Environment Day, but also raise awareness of repecting the environment and taking measures to care for various ecosystems from a young age.

€4000 donation for local school PAUL BUTLER, President of La Cala de Mijas Lions has presented El Chaparral School with thousands of euros to help local children. Vanessa Caballero Villanueva received the cheque, which was given by the Lions to celebrate 100 years since their founding. With it, the school hopes to pay for a tannoy system and a new telephone and intercom system. The tannoy system, which also plays music, has helped towards greatly improving the running of the school. It has created an amazing transformation in communication and atmosphere for both teachers and pupils. Lions Clubs bring together like minded people, pooling their talents and resources for the good of their local community. One of their major objectives is to help children and by helping local schools they can reach out and help many in our area. To show their appreciation for all that the La Cala Lions have done, the school has put up a plaque on the wall recognising the contributions the La Cala Lions Club has made, not only this year but in others as well. Paul Butler thanked them on behalf of all of its members.

by Sally Underwood The scheme, which is part of the Erasmus + programme, is funded by the EU, allowing young participants to experience a new country, staying in the city of Polpenazze del garda. Tamara Vera, Councillor for Young People, has said the application process is now opening and accepting requests. She explained, "after announcing an exchange to Germany last week, today we are offering a new opportunity for the young people of our town who are interested in interacting with those from other European countries."

She added, “it is very important that we continue to offer young people our youth information and counselling service which supports programmes such as the Erasmus +.” She explained the EU finances 100% of participants' accommodation, food and activities during their stay, in addition to providing an allowance of around €275 per person. She added, “on this occasion the exchange will focus on the environment, at a conference in which participants will speak about and water resources, raising awareness about sustainability.” Those interested in becoming part

of the group of young beneficiaries of this programme must be between 16 and 20 years old and can fill out the application form on europaerestu.eu until June 12. To be able to take part, participants will have to attend a series of preparatory talks prior to the trip at the Youth Department in the Theatre of Las Lagunas, from Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm. Ms Vera commented, she wanted to "encourage all the town’s young people to get involved, follow us on social networks and to take advantage of the resources we offer.”

Suspected sex attacker arrested by Sally Underwood THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a 39-year-old Danish man in Fuengirola, who was wanted in his own country for sexual exploitation of minors. The man turned himself to the officers who were in their vehicle, explaining he was tired of living on the run. The police proceeded to check the man’s identity, and on finding out he was wanted on a European Arrest Warrant, arrested him. In addition to his sexual crimes, which involve sexual contact with an underage person and sexually assaulting a woman, the man was also wanted for two robberies and four counts of fraud; three of which were banking based and one of which involved embezzlement. The man is said to have scammed a total of €73,138 from his victims, buying mobile phones, cars, bank loans and other goods with the money. He is also believed to have stolen €6,327 in money and jewellery across his two burglaries. If convicted, he now faces eight years in prison under Danish law.

Axe attacker jailed A 47-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly hit his neighbour with an axe in Periana on the Costa del Sol has been jailed without bail ahead of his trial. The man, known as Jose Manuel M.P. faces charges causing injury and property damage after his 24-yearold victim required five stitches to his head after their disagreement turned violent. Jose Manuel is said to have axed his neighbour after insulting his mother, causing the 24-year-old to intervene. It is said the two families have been involved in disputes for some years and that Guardia Civil officers broke up the assault without resistance.

Alameda Gardens a cool and tranquil oasis in Gibraltar CONTINUING the weekly review by John Smith on possible things to do in Gibraltar, we now turn to the Alameda Botanical Gardens. by John Smith Although Gibraltar is considered by many to be a crowded Rock with habitation clustered at the bottom, the Alameda Gardens which were established in 1816, just 11 years after the Battle of Trafalgar cover 15 acres disprove this. The original intent was that there would be somewhere for off duty servicemen to spend some recreational time and the gardens were laid out with a number of tree covered walk ways in order to allow the soldiers to stroll in the shade. Since that time, the Gardens in Red Sands Road have been an oasis of calm and now offer a whole range of interesting options for residents and visitors alike. Admission to the Gardens is free and visitors can simply stroll around the grounds enjoying more than 2,000 species of flora, much of which is directly connected with the Mediterranean although there are also a number of controlled introduced species as well as butterflies galore. Within the Gardens which are open from 8am until 9pm, or sunset if earlier, is the Wildlife Conservation Park which was set up to care for exotic animals confiscated by Gibraltar customs, unwanted exotic pets and animals on loan from international Zoos, to raise awareness of important endangered species through conservation education. Open from 10am to 5pm, there are a number of exotic birds and reptiles as well as primates and even bats with admission costing ÂŁ5 for adults with discounts for children and OAPs. AS you wander through the Gardens, keep an eye out for Bicentenary House a brand new glasshouse, specially created to house

two quite separate displays, one containing tropical plants and the other plants which live in dry and arid conditions. You will also see The Dell, an intimate sub-tropical garden, created in the 19th Century which despite some entry restrictions is available to hire for weddings with guests overlooking the ceremony from the attractive bridge above. Adjacent to this is the Lions Pond, created by the local Lions Club charity some 30 years ago which is a quiet and tasteful spot which may also be hired for wedding drinks following the ceremony at The Dell. Also situated within the Gardens is the only Open Air Theatre in Gibraltar which can seat up to 300 people and hosts a number of competitions and presentations during the year. With a large car park which does allow some inexpensive paid non-resident parking outside the Gardens which are also very close to the Cable Car terminal and an Italian Pizza restaurant you can easily spend several house enjoying all that is on offer.

Helping children to gain self-confidence and face the world ONE local woman has made it her duty to help parents empower and support their children. by John Smith Move to Spain Andrea Robson a former teacher and Head of School moved to La Cala de Mijas in August 2015 to be close to her family and to enjoy life in Spain. She loves being an aunt, playing with two gorgeous little ones who she adores and it doesn’t matter if its football in the garden, telling stories or just hanging out being silly and a little noisy, that’s perfect for her. Andrea says about La Cala “I love its Spanish feeling; the market twice a week, great atmosphere, restaurants and, of course, the beautiful beach and boardwalk, all coupled with an international flavour. I get a real sense of community here and feel very much at home.”

Lifetime of Experience Her experience as a teacher inspired her to coach children. “What inspired me most then, and still does, is enabling children to experience that magical light-bulb moment – when they ‘get it’ or make a connection that makes a real difference to them” , adding “It’s truly amazing to see children learn and watch them stretch their wings and fly without limits.” “To truly know who they are and what they stand for is the greatest gift we can give children,” according to Andrea. Empowering children She is convinced that parents want their children to be empowered. They want their children to know how to handle themselves in tricky situations, to have key life-skills and to be confident, happy and resilient people. This is easier said than done however and this is where coaching can really help. As ‘the kids coach’, she works with children and teenagers (and their parents) to create their own solutions to things that worry them or make them unhappy. This means that children can implement actions they are comfortable with because they decided what they would be. They can’t change what has happened, nor the many things that happen around them. However, they can change how they manage their feelings and develop the tools to respond to situations in a more calm, positive and confident manner. Andrea says “The same is true when we are faced with things that worry us or make us unhappy. I coach children, teens and parents to support them in solving or managing issues such as friendships, bullying, confidence, worrying about things, being aware of their own impact. “I also support children and teens to learn key life-skills such as resilience, communication, making friends, learning how to learn and knowing who they

are and how to be themselves in a very complex modern-day world.” The kids coach Last year, she trained to become a Certified and accredited Coach with the International Coach Federation and it was a fellow Costa Woman who bestowed the name, ‘the kids coach’ on her as she helped her friend’s granddaughter to gain confidence in herself. Andrea was recently invited to Oslo to present four workshops at the Nordic Network Conference to 300 international teachers, based upon children’s self-esteem, thinking skills, positive relationships with parents, much of which is explained in her new book, Igniting a Passion for Learning in the Primary School. At the moment, this skilled educator works with English speaking families organising workshops for parents based upon concerns such as bullying, too much screen-time, social media and peer pressure but she recognises that she will need to learn Spanish in order to extend her own boundaries and help local children. Holiday ideas She also has a timely new e-book which is all about fun, free and creative things to do over the summer holiday – both as a family and things for the kids to do so parents have a bit of downtime! Costa Women Asked about Costa Women, Andrea enthusiastically told RTN, “I am extremely proud to be part of @costawoman. Ali Meehan is a beacon of integrity, support, honesty, momentum, professionalism, kindness and compassion - for all of her 6000 Costa Women. It’s a social, collaborative and professional networking group who support one another and celebrate one another’s successes.” Get in contact If parents are worried about their children or teenagers, or they need some support they are welcome to get in touch with Andrea by emailing andrea@inspiredlearning.es or visiting her educational website www.inspiredlearning.es.

A licence to hire by

Colin Bird

Having waited for my Spanish driving licence since October 2016, I began to panic in May when our trip to the UK drew close and there was still no sign of the document. Panic turned to absolute despair when I was told that because the licence had been sent by mail twice (to an incomplete address as it turned out) there would be a gap of six months from the date of the last issue before a third could be re-issued, this time for collection. Collection would be no problem, but this meant that I could not expect to have it in my sweaty hands until August. If I was lucky. Trafico had provided me with a three month provisional licence in the form of an A5 letter on three occasions, and which would suffice in the event that I was stopped by the Guardia. But as I had a hire car booked in England which would require a full licence to be shown, our trip started to look in serious trouble. I sought advice from a local abogado who told me that unfortunately Trafico’s rules are Trafico’s rules, so tough luck. Then I emailed the British consulate in Alicante and the embassy in Madrid for their help, outlining in detail the discussions and responses from Trafico over the last seven months. The email I received back was made up of two pieces of advice. First: “Whilst we sympathise with your situation you'd need to get in touch with the local traffic department to resolve the issue.” Um hello, didn’t I just tell you that I had done that? Second: “If this is not resolved within the necessary time scale your last resort may be to hire a driver.” Wonderful. Triple back flips. Why hadn’t I thought of that? But there is a happy ending and I only relate all of this in the hope that it will aid anyone out there faced with the same problem. Trafico will issue an International Drivers Permit within 3-4 days, that will entitle you to hire a vehicle in any country other than Spain. Admittedly it costs €50, but compared to the alternative, for me at least, it turned out to be a life saver. This piece of invaluable information came from the hirers themselves – Enterprise cars in the UK – and confirmed by Trafico only when asked. Why was I not surprised.

Word order

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

One of the hardest things about learning a new language is knowing what order to put the words in. If we only speak one language from birth then we express our thoughts in the order of that one language. If we’ve never studied a foreign language, then it wouldn’t even occur to us that it is possible to put words in a different order, and that we would have to do so to make sense in another language. English is a language that is rather rigid about word order. This is because we don’t change endings of words to agree with other words, so therefore we need our sentences in a certain order to keep our meaning clear. Spanish is a little more flexible about word order on some occasions, but not always. Sometimes there is a standard word order that can be varied if we wish to emphasize a certain word. In other cases the word order is set in stone. We have already covered some of these points in previous articles including a recent look at the position of adjectives. However, what I propose to do know is cover a few more points about word order.

subject and verb for emphasis, particularly in shorter questions. For example, “Do you speak English?” using the formal “you” would normally be “¿Habla inglés?” or “¿Usted habla inglés?” but we can also say it this way: “¿Habla usted inglés?” inverting the subject and the verb. This order is closer to English and therefore tempting to use all the time, but with more complex closed questions we should keep to the statement order putting the subject before the verb. Direct and indirect object pronouns One rule we looked at in chapters 149 to 152 (due to form part of Step by Step Spanish volume 4) was the order of direct and indirect object pronouns. This order is absolutely strict and set in stone. Indirect object pronouns always precede direct object pronouns. Therefore, “I give it to you” is “te lo doy” (to you it I

give). Likewise when tacked onto infinitives, gerunds and imperatives, this order if preserved “dámelo” (give to me it) “Estoy dándotelo” (I am giving to you it) and so on. Compound verbs and verbal phrases In Spanish we never split parts of verbs up, something we do quite happily in English. For example: “I have already seen the film” (with “already” going between the compound verb “have seen”). In Spanish this is not possible. “Ya he visto la película”. Similarly we cannot split verbal phrases, for example “Estoy viendo pasar a la gente” (I am watching the people go by). There are a few more points about word order which I will finish off next week, before I find something else to torture you with.

Closed and open questions I covered the difference between the word order of closed and open questions in chapters 39 and 40 (Step by Step Spanish Volume One) and would only like to add one thing to those pearls of wisdom. In the case of a closed question which technically should take the same order as a statement: (e.g. El niño duerme en su cama – the boy sleeps in his bed - statement. ¿El niño duerme en su cama? – Does the boy sleep in his bed? -question). However, sometimes we can invert the

Book Review Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. This was Smith’s debut novel, the first of a trilogy featuring former MGB Agent Leo Demidov set in Stalin’s Soviet Russia. Imagine a combination of Gorky Park, Silence of the Lambs with Kafka. The novel was inspired by crimes committed by Anderi Chikatilo also known as the Rostor Ripper alias the Butcher of Rostor or even the Red Ripper. He committed 52 murders in the Soviet Union during the 70s and 80s. The state initially refused to admit he existed although he was eventually caught and executed. “Yesterday I was asked to denounce Raisa. My superior officers believe she’s a traitor. They believe she’s a spy working for a foreign agency.” Leo was a Stalinist secret policeman interrogating and torturing citizens. A senior apparatchik or a grim reaper perhaps? The MGB was an omnipresent secret police, a forerunner of the infamous KGB. Leo was part of this brutality having ordered the execution of thousands of his countrymen. It’s a totalitarian world full of mistrust, a society dominated by lies, secrecy, corruption, cruelty and double standards. Those who were lucky to survive execution found themselves dispatched to the gulags, forced labour camps. Under Stalin millions of prisoners died in these camps from starvation and maltreatment. Raisa is Leo’s wife, 27, beautiful and a school teacher. She married Leo out of fear not out of love. Her parents had been killed and her village wiped out during the Great Patriotic War. An executed spy called Brodsky who was really a vet had named Raisa although Leo firmly believed that the confession was a lie. “I know my wife is innocent. The whole thing is an act of revenge.” He knows that if he doesn’t denounce his wife he will most probably be arrested along with his own parents. His refusal meant that he was reassigned which meant a demotion and exile to the Urals. The death of Stalin had caused some chaos and uncertainty and Leo in effect, escaped with his life. His second in command was a ruthless man called Vasili who REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. Publisher: Simon and Schuster. had despised Leo. He had even denounced his only brother. His hatred of Leo was personal, motivated ISBN: 978-1-4711-3347-3. info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

possibly by professional jealousy or by raw ambition. For Leo and Raisa it is all about survival once they become fugitives, hunted by the secret police, enemies of the state. Communist Russia had tried to claim that there was no crime in its Utopian society. The story begins in 1933 before quickly skipping twenty years. We begin in the Ukraine before the action moves to Moscow. A young boy called Arkady Fyodorovich is mowed down by a train, a tragic accident. Fyodor, his father was a low ranking member of the MGB, one of Leo’s subordinates. He believed his son had been murdered. The boy’s mouth had been stuffed with dirt and he had been left naked. Leo’s role here was to confront the family and persuade them that the boy had been accidentally killed. The State worried that “The groundless chatter about murder could grow like a weed, spreading through the community, unsettling people, making them question one of the fundamental pillars of their new society.” In the Urals Leo was handed a case concerning the death of a child, a young girl who had been badly savaged. He knows that he needs to find some connection between Arkady’s death with this second case and the break-through comes when he discovers a third body. Can he prove that there is a serial killer without endangering his life even further? Can he stop more children from being brutally murdered? It’s a race against time. Full of tension. Leo undergoes a Damascene conversion and becomes determined to find the killer before the secret police hunt him down and execute him. Well worth a read. One of my must read books when you get the chance. I love this author.

Rhodesia stabbed in the back by

Michael Walsh

keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com

Many British ex-pats have a touching trust in the British government; a childish faith which time after time proves to be misplaced. Perhaps the comfort of their illusions is preferable to reality. A Freedom of Information (FOI) request reveals that the British government purposely turned a blind eye to the slaughter of thousands of Zimbabweans by Robert Mugabe’s Fifth Brigade. The reason given was ‘to protect the United Kingdom’s political interests.’ The damning papers came to light after a request for the previously hidden documents was made by University of St Andrews lecturer Dr Hazel Cameron. In an interview with the Guardian she says; “the British government could have influenced authorities in Zimbabwe, but put political and economic interests first.” In 1982, President for life Robert Mugabe launched an offensive in Matabeleland, homelands of the Ndebele tribes. Over the following nine months the Zimbabwe National Army tortured, raped, and burned to death tens of thousands of defenceless tribesmen and women. British High Commissioner Robin Byatt, then based in Harare, says, “There were other important interests; ‘investments, trade considerations, prestige, and the need to avoid a mass exodus of ethnic-Europeans.” The High Commissioner concedes that the White citizens of Zimbabwe too were betrayed and abandoned to their fate by the Westminster elite. The ethnic-cleansing of the Ndebele peoples in 1982/3 was known as Guguruhundi (the rains that wash away the chaff). Robert Mugabe’s North Korean trained Zimbabwean troops carried out multiple murders, rapes, and torture. Pregnant women suffered their foetuses being ripped from bayoneted bellies. Randomly chosen villagers were herded into grass thatched huts which were then torched. Mass burial sites are still being discovered. Needless to say that comment by the Anti-Apartheid Movement that campaigned relentlessly for Robert Mugabe is notable by its absence. The remains of thousands of Africans are still being discovered in Zimbabwe’s once profitable but now disused mine shafts. Routinely, Mugabe’s dictatorship blames the atrocities on Rhodesian troops. However, the Westminster-installed junta refuses to allow forensic anthropologists to test the remains for one obvious reason; the remains of villagers will be shown not to have met their demise between 1965 and 1978.

It is estimated that 20,000 Africans were butchered for no other reason than their being of ‘the wrong tribe’. A reliable source says, “It is more realistic to believe up to 50,000 perished.” It is thought that up to 761,000 British expatriates live in Spain. One can only pray that the Madrid government is more sanguine than is Robert Mugabe’s regime and less treacherous than those in Pigminster.

Barking mad about gadgets by

Barry Duke

Anyone who knows me will confirm that I have an incurable addiction to gadgets. “Ah, yes,” people will say, “he’s the guy who has an iPhone cover that doubles as an e-cigarette.” Or, “yup, he’s the go-to fella if you want to charge your mobile because he carries a high-powered self-defence torch that has a USB output port.” Dropped your keys down a grating in the street? Well, I carry a powerful magnet on a telescopic rod, and on three occasions I have managed to retrieve bunches of them for grateful strangers. My man-bag is groaning under the weight of objects I’ve been compelled to buy each time an ad for some new gewgaw appears on my computer screen, and at the end of each month I dread to look at my bank statements for fear of seeing how profligate I’ve been. Do I actually need the stuff I see advertised? Oh yes, if only to enhance my reputation for being as crazy as a box of frogs. Do the things I buy work? Not always, as I discovered recently when I bought an anti-bark collar for my delinquent mini Pinscher Fifi, one of two rescue pooches I took into my 31st floor apartment about five years ago in a moment of madness. Though she’s mostly quiet in the apartment, she’s an absolute nightmare out on the street. Other dogs set her off, as do squirrels, cats, pizza delivery bikes, baby buggies, skateboards, mobility scooters and even dragonflies. Then I saw an ad for a humane anti-bark collar. It doesn’t shock an animal, as some collars do (avoid these like the plague.) Instead it bleeps loudly, and if that doesn’t shut the dog up, it follows through with a vibration. Genius, I thought and promptly coughed up around 35 euros. Whilst eagerly awaiting its arrival I told my friend Matt about the gadget, and he bought one for his dog. When my collar did arrive, I found that it did nothing to stop Fifi’s yapping. It’s as much use as an ashtray to an astronaut. But the one Matt bought immediately silenced his dog, and he’s delighted with it. I can’t demand my money back because it WORKS – just not on Fifi. She’s the defective one. It’s a highly-sensitive piece of kit – so much so that, even when it's languishing on my desk, it leaps into action whenever I cough, or if gunshots are fired in a TV movie. Which of my gadgets do I prize the most? Definitely the tactical torch because it saved me from getting mugged at a cashpoint in the UK a few months back. It temporarily blinded a would-be attacker, who spun away from the powerful beam and disabled himself by crashing into a lamp-post. After that episode, I bought a dozen of them which I sold off at cost price to friends. Oooh! Hang on a mo, an ad’s just popped up on my screen for an “olfactory” digital alarm clock that wakes you up by filling your nostrils with various aromas. Sensorwake works in combination with capsules that fill one’s bedroom with a smell of your choice: expresso, croissants, toast, chocolate, sea spray, grass or peppermint. A snip at $121.30 (including six capsules.) Now, where did I put my wallet?

financial news

British homebuyers recouping £5.3bn British homebuyers are finally beginning to recoup the millions they paid for holiday homes that were never built after the Spanish property market crash.

In December 2015, a ruling in Spain’s supreme court paved the way for an estimated 130,000 Brits to claim directly from the banks rather than property developers, who promptly declared themselves bankrupt. An estimated £5.3bn (€6.1bn) is owed to British homebuyers in respect of deposits and stage payments on properties purchased off-plan, most of which were never completed. In total, approximately 500,000 people were affected, including approximately 300,000 Spaniards. Before the ruling, only those buyers with bank guarantees could claim directly from the banks (about 5 per cent of people affected). Spain’s supreme court then ruled that, regardless of whether buyers had guarantees, the banks had an obligation to safeguard their money. The average case takes 12-15 months to complete so it is only now that the banks are starting to pay out. Until the crash in 2008, the property boom had seen Spain building more homes than the UK, Germany and France put together. Many of these were holiday homes on the Costas, but tens of thousands were built in urbanisations on the outskirts of many Spanish towns. During the boom, Spaniards were buying first and second homes off-plan.

Spain is now littered with half-built, largely uninhabited housing developments. Cases must be filed within 15 years of the expected completion date of the property. If you think you are eligible you should first seek independent and impartial legal advice. To proceed you will need the following: • A signed contract between the client and the developer. • Proof of payment into the property developer’s bank account. In many cases, the client will have transferred money

to their lawyer rather than directly to the property developer’s bank. In such cases, your lawyer must locate the developer’s lawyer to get proof it received the funds. • Judgments – if you have previously tried to take the developer to court, it is important to let your lawyer know. • Other supporting documents for the property, such as paperwork or email exchanges, should be shared with your legal adviser to give them the best chance of reclaiming your cash. The deadline for claims is October 7 2020.

A quarter of Brits have a secret stash of cash That their partner knows nothing about. Nearly a quarter of British adults have money tucked away their partner knows absolutely nothing about, according to a new survey. Researchers polled 1,500 people in relationships and revealed the typical man will have as much as £4,234 saved on the sly, with the average female stashing away funds to the tune of £2,768. Four in ten (41 per cent) of those studied said they have a secret pot of cash because they like being financially independent and 23 per cent said they are keeping it from their other half as they are terrible with money. The data showed 27 per cent are squirreling away money for a sun soaked holiday, with 38 per cent of those looking for a break in Europe and a further 30 per cent saving for a tropical holiday in a far-flung destination – without their partner. Almost two in ten (19 per cent) have their eye on a new car and one in five are saving for new clothes and designer items. But a more careful 23 per cent are saving on the quiet in case their relationship one day breaks down and they need cash for an ‘exit strategy.’ The poll revealed the average adult felt they would need a staggering £22,748 (€26,011.84) as a buffer if their relationship fell apart. One in five said if their spouse discovered the savings they would want to spend it immediately. The poll found the most popular place to hide money from their other half was an online savings account (35 per cent), which avoids any bank statements in the post, followed by a regular bank account (26 per cent), whereby respondents admitted to destroying any statements. But underwear drawers and stuffed at the back of the wardrobe were still popular hiding places for wads of cash. A crafty one in ten (11 per cent) even give their savings to their Mum or Dad to stash away for them. A high-rolling 12 per cent keep their cash in an off-shore account and more than one in ten women are keeping cash in a bank account in their maiden name which their partner is unaware of. A blasé 17 per cent of respondents felt it made sense to save in secret – but a more honest 56 per cent felt it was sneaky and deceitful. Nearly three in ten (29 per cent) said they felt guilty for not being upfront about all their finances, but 36 per cent said they were doing it for the good of the family. The poll found 42 per cent said they would be furious if they discovered their partner had cash stashed away. In contrast 57 per cent said they would be delighted. In fact, one in twenty of those said if they found wads of cash in the house, they would nab it for themselves.

home and garden

Perk up your garden for peak summer June is traditionally the month when the Spanish garden comes to life, as the cooler nights and longer days allow the maximum growing potential, before the extreme summer heat arrives. Whether you’ve already got your garden looking in best condition for the coming season, or if you’re lagging behind, here are a few tips for the month, bearing in mind it’s your last chance to grow plants before the peak of summer. SHRUBS: If you haven't cut back your box bushes or hedges already, early June traditionally is the last chance to do so. Topiary shapes can be tricky to cut well at first, but with practice and special topiary shears, you'll find it gets easier. PERENNIALS AND BULBS: Deadheading is a bit of a chore but it's essential to keep plants such as roses, cosmos, tender geraniums, knautias and sweet peas flowering. Early-flowering perennials, such as hardy geraniums and alchemilla, can be cut back very hard. They will regrow, look a lot better, and may even re-flower. If you're planting perennials, make sure the plant and the ground are both well watered before they go in. Water again afterwards and keep an eye on them for signs of stress. CUTTINGS: This is the time of year to take semi-ripe cuttings. These are created using this year's growth while the stem is still a bit soft, and the technique is ideal for plants such as lavender, box, passion flower and heather. Take a non-flowering shoot and trim off about 10cm, cutting just below a leaf node. Remove the lower leaves and place the cut end in a container with cutting compost. Then wait to see if it will root and take up water before all of its water is lost through the leaves. There's more chance of success if you keep everything moist, so slip a plastic bag over the top of the container and put it in a sunny spot to keep a good sauna-like atmosphere inside.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES: Continue planting salad crops in succession and cover fruit trees, gooseberries and currant bushes with nets. Sow runner beans and French beans in lines or with a wigwam of bamboo canes. An old trick is to line a trench with newspapers before putting back the last of the soil so the water stays in place. Be especially vigilant about watering during dry spells as beans really like to have their feet damp at all times. Don't forget pumpkins and squashes – sow now and they'll be ready for Halloween. Plant out late seed potatoes; chitting – leaving them in a warm, dark place to sprout – isn't needed at this time of year. Plant out tender plants such as courgettes, squash, tomatoes and sweetcorn, now that risk of frost has passed. Sink a long cane into the ground alongside tomatoes and water well; regular watering is key with tomatoes. Don't forget the second earthing up of potatoes to keep the light away from the tubers. Watch out for really hot days, which can dry out young plants. If the temperature goes up, try to water twice a day.

Brits’ secret love affair with hygge revealed A secret British passion for yet another aspect of Scandinavian culture has been revealed. After flat-pack furniture, meatballs and dark crime thrillers, it turns out Brits share a powerful love of ‘hygge’ too. New research shows that while many Brits may be unfamiliar with the meaning of the Danish word hygge – less than a quarter (22 per cent) of those surveyed said they understood it – the Brits really do grasp the concept, even if they don’t realise it. Hygge centres on the simple things that make us feel cosy and content. Although there is no English translation, UK homeowners are more tuned in than they know, with almost all respondents (98 per cent) saying that they feel their home has an impact on their sense of wellbeing. The survey by Everest shows that the simple things work well too. More than a third of those questioned (38 per cent) say that nice scents create a feeling of hygge in their homes, while two out of five (40 per cent) say natural light is important. More than half (58 per cent) say they feel content simply spending time with family, friends or partners, and 43 per cent say the simple act of locking their doors and windows gives them a sense of wellbeing. In true Scandinavian style, nearly a quarter of respondents (23 per cent) light a fire or log burner to help them feel contented, while around half (52 per cent) draw the curtains and almost a third (32 per cent) opt for the intimate appeal of candlelight. Bringing natural elements into the house such as flowers and pine cones creates hygge for three in ten (29 per cent). Bottom of the list for bringing hygge into the home was communication with the outside world, with only one in ten (11 per cent) saying their devices helped them feel content.

6. Cooking / baking (42 per cent) 7. Enjoying the view from my window (34 per cent) 8. Lighting candles (32 per cent) 9. Decluttering (30 per cent) 10. Bringing elements of nature into the home (29 per cent)

Welcome to the declutter clinic Ask anyone, wherever they live, be it in a studio, or massive house, UK, Spain, Australia, Russia, or Outer Mongolia, anyway, just go ahead and ask them the biggest issue they face in their home and I will guarantee you their answer …….CLUTTER!! It’s everywhere, in every house you go in, stuff, momentoes, gadgets, stuff, stuff and more stuff, you know, considering we live in a throwaway society, why don’t we ever throw anything away. If you’re serious about making some space in your home, here are a few top tips on how to do it, so make a coffee, move some stuff, find a seat and read on. When you set out to reduce your clutter and create a streamlined, organised home, it's easier said than done but use these tips as a starting point: 1. Rationalise your belongings to free up space. 2. Be ruthless – if you haven't used an item for a year, send it to a charity shop, recycle it or, as a last resort, bin it. Sell unwanted CDs, DVDs, games, books, phones and games consolesat markets or online. 3. If you need an incentive to face a mountain of clutter, set a timer for 10 minutes and just do a bit at a time. Or

tackle a small area, such as clearing one shelf. Promise yourself a treat when the work is done, like a glass of wine, or a pizza, but not more clutter. 4. To prevent clutter building up, for every item you bring into the house, send another one out. To speed things up, try 'one in, two out'. 5. For a drastic measure, try putting all your possessions from one room into a box, then only bring out items as you need them. It'll soon become clear what's vital and what can be thrown away. 6. 'When you come across something you can't bear to get rid of, think carefully about its true purpose in your life,' advises Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying. 'Many of the things you possess have already fulfilled their role'. Do you really need that My Little Pony Gymkhana set? 7. Trinkets may evoke fond memories, but you can't keep everything. Hang on to the best of them, and store the others in your heart instead, or take a picture as a keepsake.

Setting out to declutter and create a streamlined home is easier said than done so be ruthless

Ariana Grande has officially released a live version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow as a charity single. Performed at last Sunday (June 4)’s #OneLoveManchester benefit concert, proceeds from the 23-year-old’s Judy Garland cover will go to the British Red Cross’ We Love Manchester Fund. Ariana’s single One Last Time was also rereleased as a charitable song on Sunday.

On everyone’s lips

Photo credit: Reuters Media Express Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert took place last Sunday despite another attack on the nation’s capital just a few hours before on Saturday night at London Bridge. However, the concert took place regardless proving the city on Manchester’s resilience and unity. "Let's not be afraid." Manchester’s own Take That followed those touching words from Marcus Mumford, opening with their hits ‘Let It Shine’ and ‘Giants’ ahead of a rapturous reception for the appearance of Robbie Williams. Always the entertainer, Williams was the perfect choice to relax any (understandable) tensions in the crowd at Old Trafford Cricket Ground; his irrepressible, laddish charm saw fans singing along to a tailored rendition of ‘Strong’ ahead of his emotional song ‘Angels’ that acquired obvious new meaning inside the

stadium. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for having all of us. I am so honoured to be at this incredible event surrounded by all you amazing people/ And for me the most important responsibility we have on this entire planet is to take care of one another – and look what we're doing right here.” This moving statement came from Miley Cyrus, who joined Pharrell Williams onstage for ‘Happy’ ahead of her heart-breaking rendition of ‘Inspired’, dedicated to everyone affected by the Manchester Arena attack. Screams greeted former One Direction star Niall Horan followed by Co-producers of the event – Melvin Benn, Simon Moran and Scooter Braun saying: “Manchester, your bravery is

our hope.” Ariana Grande’s much-awaited performance brings the most deafening roar of the night; two years to the day since her first performance in Manchester, and barely two weeks since the Manchester Arena attack. Coldplay – that most divisive of bands – brought everyone together with a cover of Oasis hit ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ ahead of their own songs including ‘Fix You’ and ‘Something Just Like This’, along with a winning combination of confetti and rainbow-coloured smoke. One Love Manchester wasn’t about fear. It didn’t come with kind of selfcongratulatory pride you usually sense with charity events of this scale. This was the proper way to respond to hate – with love!

FUENGIROLA’S House of Culture is set to play host to the Virgen del Mar choral concert today at 8.30pm.

Romero explained, “we are going to host a new performance of the Virgen del Mar choir at the House of Culture and it is always a pleasure to welcome this choir which has been going since 1980, always directed by Miguel Moreno, ensuring Fuengirola does not lose its choral traditions and the town keeps its beautiful music style.” He went on to congratulate, “all members of this choir and particularly Miguel Moreno for continuing to bring, year after year, music to the lives of so many people who watch the Virgen del Mar choir.” For his part, Moreno explained, “in this concert we want to inspire the audience, which in turn encourages us and makes us a sing a lot better.” He added, “we have a great programme scheduled, with traditional Andalucian songs and a section of Zarzuela, which will be accompanied by a piano teacher from the council.” He concluded by encouraging, “all those who like music even just a little to come and join the Virgen del Mar choir, because we mainly need male voices. You do not need to be able to read music or have a very good voice, just the ability to listen, practise and learn.”

Bar-b-can’t? Or Bar-b-can?

June is here, the nights are at their longest, the pool is getting a ‘little’ warmer, so now there’s no excuse to keep the BBQ hidden in the garage, it’s time to embrace the coals and release your inner caveman with a few fun-filled ‘Barbie Nights.’ Here are a few tips to make your next summer BBQ the best one ever: TO LID OR NOT TO LID? THAT IS THE QUESTION It's difficult to decide whether your food is better off being cooked with the lid on, or the lid off. It is suggested that if your food will cook in under 30 minutes, then you should cook with the lid off. Any food that takes longer than this is better off being cooked with it on, as it will keep the food more moist and less heat will be wasted. OI SAUCY!! What sauce is the best accompaniment for which meat? If you're planning on giving your barbeque an Olympic twist, why not make flaming hot chicken wings by adding a touch of spice, or champion your Usain Bolt-inspired burgers with some Jamaican jerk or flavoured sauce. If you'd rather have sauce as a side, be rebellious and try something new. ECO BEACH You can still be the king of the grill and be eco-friendly too. Using Firemizer, your barbeque will burn for longer and

use less fuel. By spreading the heat evenly, it'll ensure all your fuel is burnt, which reduces waste and ultimately saves you money. Those summer evenings will last longer and be more enjoyable, with less waste, less emissions and less expense-spared. TONG ACTION Get yourself a decent pair of barbeque tongs, and then the rest is easy! The dreaded part of a barbeque is losing food to the fire. Instead of rummaging through the coal at the end of the evening, or helplessly poking at the stray sausage in a desperate attempt to save it, purchase a trusty pair of tongs and make your alfresco party stress free. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TIMING BABY Ensure you have the meat prepped, your sides at the ready, and your guests hungry to eat! Planning your barbeque will ensure the event runs smoothly and disaster free. Why not chop or marinate your meat the night before, making less for you to do on the day? Barbeques are all about spending time with family and friends, with lots of food, drink, and laughter.

Kenny you told me something I can’t forget. I

was waiting for it to happen and then I realised

Code Breaker

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 8 represents Q and 12 represents D, so fill in Q every time the figure 8 appears and D every time the figure 12 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

the other night what you meant, now it is clear to me, and I am inspired! It has now happened. Cathy D.

That’s the wonderful feeling that you get when

Spirit takes you into reality. Yes, it does take time for things to sink in, or for the time to be right. I

get many emails or calls with people reminding me that it took time for them to get the results that

I predicted. The most important thing is that the good guidance from Spirit does a great job in the process, and that truly, thankfully, the time was right for what had to happen eventually! Good result.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Take time to ensure what it is that you chiefly need right now, because mistakes will be hard to rectify. You have the blessings of a generous Cosmos that sends you the gift of opportunity and abundance for the astrological year ahead.

Venus sextiles Mars and sees to it that you must be rewarded for a job worth done, because you deserve it. You have been patient and understanding when others were thinking only of themselves, and now you are about to reap the benefits. The future may very well see you just walking away from something that you no longer believe in anymore.

The Sun takes on Pluto, ruler of the subconscious forces that exist all around us. The planet of Power seems to be exerting energies garnered from the Eighth House, which would normally be used to protect you; but all is not what it seems right now. Your psychic energies are prioritised to return you to the balance and equilibrium that you need.

Saturn has the effect of delaying tactics at the moment, and it would be wise to look before you leap this time. The midweek conjunction with Ceres hopefully puts things back in the swing once more, but it does also serve to show you that you are seeing things from a very different angle and for sure others need to get their act together now.

Your attention to detail is renown, but however far you look there is something now that you are simply not seeing. You are born to serve, and take your work very seriously, but something has offended you and rightfully you should not be side stepped over recent changes. Put your brain back into overdrive once more, it makes you happy!

Financial obligations are taking their toll, and it would be highly appropriate to tighten your belt right now. Whereas there was almost always just enough you are close to having to take drastic action because somebody isn’t paying their way. Mercury squares on Neptune and this bodes a strict review of expenditure to make ends meet!

Kora sextiles the Sun this week, and it’s a great time to make plans for the near future. You need to take a few things on board and to plan your trip appropriately, however, and don’t give in to pressure because somebody thinks that they could do the job better than you could. Take control and know that you can’t please everybody, but you will try to!

Beware! There is more than meets the eye in a simple request that appears to be quite innocent. Your focus this week is mainly on a domestic project, which, though it may highlight that you have bitten off more than you can chew, will pay dividends and get you in the mood for further works. Ceres and Pluto combine to showcase your talents!

Is the glass half full or half empty? The waning Moon heralds the need to replenish what you have started, and advises you to stick to your guns over a matter of principle. There may be no easy way down from where you are right now, but it is high time that you opted out if the current turbulent situation is causing you too much stress.

Mars is in sextile with Venus, and you will find yourself surrounded by people with needs this week. Whilst it is good to help solution things you are not about to take sides as relationships of others fall apart. Your tender love and care is the way ahead, and this you give freely and with a good heart. Beware though, someone has an ulterior motive!

With both Neptune squaring with Mercury and the Sun in opposition to Saturn, let there be no more delay in your plans. Something has to go right now and your decision will greatly affect the future, so take steps to bring things nicely together and make a deal. This week is all about some co-ordination and compromise as you fix the right deal!

The opening of all channels of communication is the current prerogative of nimble Jupiter coupled with an ebullient Mercury. What comes next is what you do best, as you both create and direct the changes needed in a relationship shuffle. There is give and take and someone has to get their come-uppance into the bargain anytime soon.

Various planets transit through Capricorn throughout the year, activating Earth energy and promoting change as a challenge. Saturn opposes the Sun this week which brings negativity into a plan that seemed to be just plain sailing but will be all the better for your avid attention and honest and reliable intervention when the time is right!

Men’s health

When big isn’t better A recent Australian study has identified a new kind of body dysmorphia in men, where even well built men think they are puny and not surprisingly they named it Bigorexia. If you’ve been anywhere around the beaches or bars over the last few weeks, you can’t fail to have come across large groups of guys on stag weekends, wandering the streets, sitting in the beach bars, shirts off, shorts on, soaking up the sun and the beer. One strikingly different look has been apparent on these guys in the last year or so and it’s not the fact they mostly all have beards, it’s the size of them. Not size, as in fat, I mean size as in huge, big, muscle torsoed, even in men of smaller stature and physique. Many of these guys, even though they probably imagine they look good, actually look rather odd and unnatural. Steroid use by men is at an epedimic stage throughout the world, helping to make men look bigger, but causing all kinds of side effects, including lack of virility, anger management issues and depression. Ignoring the odd sounding name, Bigorexia is a phenomenon that is becoming more prominent. It is essentially an inverted, male form of anorexia, where rather than perceiving themselves as fat and attempting to exert control by starving themselves slim, researchers pinpointed a significant number of young men who despite looking completely normal see themselves as being puny, and resort to excessive weighttraining, overly-controlled diets and steroid use to compensate. Men with this condition are four times less likely to be diagnosed than their female counterparts – presumably because we are now well attuned to the warning signs of eating disorders in young women, but would regard a massively gym-built man as just being fit and healthy. The study found extreme dieting and purging (either vomiting, or using laxatives, diuretics and fat-burners) increasing more rapidly among men than women, while

needle exchanges reported a significant uptick in the number of patients referring for steroid use, rather than heroin. On the steroid issue alone, recent studies suggest that 17% of gym goers are estimated to be using amphetamines to lose weight, with the same figure using thyroid hormones, 15% taking diuretics, 60,000 people in the UK taking anabolic steroids and steroid users starting younger and continuing for longer than previously. Even amongst Spanish men, the need to look bigger is driving them to steroid abuse. Just look at the smaller men in the gym with tiny ankles, and wrists, but huge pecs, arms and shoulders, that can be a sign of anabolic use. Scott Griffiths, author of the report conducted by Sydney University issued a stark warning, “Steroid abuse is rife anywhere you go and at the point now where the perception of the norm has changed. It’s like women with plastic surgery, where what you think is real actually isn’t, but you’ve stopped noticing.", he said. Pointing out that, "It's definitely gone below the radar because with issues such as bulimia and anorexia the focus is always on fat. For men it is about their muscularity. They are taking steroids, laxatives and diuretics but we don't see them as eating disorder behaviours," While men looking after themselves physically is to be applauded and sensible exercise has an important role in our mental well-being too, this is a problem we need to be alert for among ourselves and our friends because we are looking at a timebomb of health issues in later life.

Crunch on eggshells for calcium boost I had a childhood friend who had a lovely black labrador called Paddy. She was something of a canine dustbin, capable of eating anything the family left lying around. One snack she particularly loved and would sit drooling in the kitchen waiting for, was, believe it or not, eggshells, which she would happily crunch on all day. I hadn't given eggshells much thought until I saw a recent scientific study which immediately took me back in time a few decades to my friend's kitchen, Paddy the black labrador and her favourite crunchy snack. Yes, they might be good for compost, but egg shells also have another important use. Each year in the US alone, Business Insider reports, the food industry is responsible for 150,000 tons of shell waste. We automatically bin our shells when making anything involving eggs . But instead of throwing them away, we should give some serious thought to eating them. Not just because of the environmental benefits, but also because of their nutritional value. No, It's not April Fools Day, there is a serious side to this story. Egg shells are a great and rich source of calcium because they are 95 per cent calcium carbonate which, incidentally is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. One single egg shell contains around two grams of calcium which works out as being between two to four times our recommended daily allowance. This, however, is not a call to start mainlining raw eggshells, which would be rather silly and could play havoc with sensitive teeth and gums. Instead, boil the shells to blitz any harmful bacteria. After the shells are nicely boiled, you then bake them in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes with the temperature turned up to 200F. They should then grind nicely into a fine powder, which you can do in a blender. The powder remains a good source of calcium and has been shown to reduce pain and bone loss in women with senile osteoporosis. You don't need to eat the powder on its own. It can be added to foods such as bread, pizza dough and spaghetti. But be cautious. Too much or too little calcium can be dangerous, with the average adult needing just one gram per day.

The most revolutionary ‘no surgery’ solution for women’s comprehensive wellbeing

Ask the Optician

How does my diet affect my eyes? By Amrik Sappal, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola Q. How can my diet help my eyes? A. Research conducted by America’s National Institutes of Health found that a type of antioxidant known as carotenoids may protect against macular degeneration and revealed that people eating the highest amounts of carotenoids have a 43% lower risk of developing macular degeneration. Studies have also shown that people with higher than average intakes of antioxidants – beta-carotene, lutein and vitamins C and E – also appear to have a reduced risk of developing cataracts.

We are increasingly aware of the importance of taking care of ourselves and feeling comfortable in our own skin, including our private parts. A woman undergoes many changes throughout her lifetime. Pregnancies, labour, hormonal changes and menopause are some factors that can affect intimacy: the vaginal walls may dilate excessively, there may be loss of vaginal lubrication and elasticity, as well as dryness and irritation. All of these affect women’s intimate comfort and decrease their confidence and the quality of their sexual activity. Medical technology is constantly improving to offer us more efficient and less invasive solutions. The latest revolution in the women’s unit has already arrived at HC Marbella; a new generation of lasers, especially designed to treat in a non-invasive way the problems that affect women that have previously only been treated with surgery.

What is the CO2 laser and what does it do? CO2 fractional laser technology in gynaecology has given a new boost to the development of treatments for the vaginal mucous membrane. Gynelase can treat vaginal atrophy, vaginal hyperlaxity and involuntary urination upon exertion (of light or moderate degree). The CO2 laser is applied directly on the mucous membrane of the vaginal walls, which induces the remodelling and stimulation of the tissue and leads to collagen regeneration in that area. In this way, the membrane becomes thicker and microcirculation improves, making it function better by providing increased lubrication. Recent studies show that Gynelase is also highly effective in the treatment of a very taboo symptom that deeply affects many women during menopause: urinary incontinence. Indeed, by stimulating the vaginal

tissues with the emission of CO2 lasers, the affected urogenital structures regain their functionality. This in turn restores urinary control and dramatically improves quality of life, both physically and psychologically. CO2 laser reduction labiaplasty and vaginal remodelling obtain better and safer results than going under the knife. In fact, laser treatment coagulates and leads to less scars and inflammation, which reduces post-surgery discomfort for the patient. Furthermore, it increases the firmness and elastic of the membrane, while stimulating the production of collagen. If you would like to make an appointment for a free consultation at the Gynecology Unit at HC Marbella, call 952 908 628. The staff at HC Marbella can provide you with all the information you need and answer your questions with no obligation.

Beauty tips Mayonnaise mask for soft, shiny hair This best beauty advice from Grandmas actually works! The egg yolk in the mayonnaise has lecithin, which is supposed to encourage hair growth. The vinegar is good for exfoliating the scalp and the oils are great for conditioning. This mask is very nourishing for damaged hair - it helps to smooth, hydrate and it’s inexpensive. The Recipe: 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 egg, 1 to 2 teaspoons oil (olive, coconut, almond, jojoba, etc.) optional. Mix the ingredients together when they are at room temperature and apply to warm wet hair (use warm to hot water to get your hair moist and warm.) Cover your hair and let your hair absorb the mask for for 1-2 hours. Wash hair immediately. This mask may leave an odour and you might want to wash your hair twice.

Q. What are the best foods to eat for my eyes? A. Carrots – It’s true that these can help you see in the dark as they are high in beta-carotene, which the body can convert to vitamin A and lead to better night-vision. Dark green leafy vegetables contain betacarotene and vitamin C which can help slow cataract progression. Peppers contain lutein that scientists believe protects the sensitive retina from light-induced oxidation damage and may be responsible for reversing macular degeneration in very early stages. Sardines and Nuts contain Zinc and vitamin E. Zinc is beneficial for wound healing and maintaining the immune system. Studies suggest that vitamin E can protect against cataracts. Apple debuts ‘HomePod’ smart speaker At its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California on Monday, Apple unveiled the HomePod - a voice-controlled speaker powered by its virtual assistant Siri. Like devices by Amazon and Google, the HomePod can make music suggestions and adjust home temperatures. Analysts say Apple has been slow to improve its Siri virtual assistant and launch a smart speaker, after Amazon launched its Echo in 2014. But now, the world’s most valuable technology company looks set to make up for it, introducing new ways to get customers to use more of its money-making apps and services. Siri will be integrated into the $349 (€310) speaker and can make music recommendations that pair Apple Music, send text messages, check news and sports scores and control compatible home gadgets like lightbulbs and thermostats. The HomePod stands just under seven inches (18 cm) tall and is covered in fabric mesh that will come in white or grey. A computer processor will tune sound to the room and beam specific parts of music, like a singer’s voice, toward the listener. Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December. Apple also used its annual developer meeting - its largest ever with some 5,000-people attending - to announce the next version of its mobile operating system - iOS 11 - which will include a new setting for people who use their iPhone in the car. In January, the company was sued by a US couple whose daughter was killed by a driver allegedly using FaceTime on his iPhone. The new driving mode silences notifications, turns the phone’s display off, and can automatically reply to messages to warn friends that you are driving. Samsung is testing a similar feature for its Android-powered phones. Apple also announced:

Nearly half of Brits have made a best friend through social media

• a deal bringing the Amazon Prime Video streaming service to the Apple TV set-top box • an update to its Safari web browser, which will now stop websites from tracking visitors and

stop videos playing automatically • speed upgrades to its iMac and Macbook range of computers, plus a new iMac Pro which the company says is the most powerful Mac ever made

Research has found that Brits have an average of between 100- 200 social media followers, yet only 3-5 who they would consider ‘close’ friends offline. The research also found that despite the continued dominance of social media, what we all really yearn for is quality face to face time with our friends and when asked about their preferred means of communication with friends, 69 per cent opted for catching up in person rather than via social media (11 per cent), group chats (8 per cent), text message (8 per cent) or a phone call (3 per cent). As encouraging as it may seem to hear how traditional means of nurturing friendships and relationships haven’t been forgotten altogether, social media appears to be playing a significant role in the way that we form some friendships in the first place. Over half of Brits (54 per cent) claim to have met up with someone they originally met on social media and 44 per cent say they made a new best friend thanks to their online networks. Social media is also proving to be a necessary source of confidence for many given that 23 per cent admit that it takes just 10-25 likes to make us feel valued by our online friends and 60 per cent also stating that getting likes helps to boost their confidence.

App of the week - QUIK Category: Photo and video Everyone has dozens or even hundreds of photos and videos just sitting in their camera roll for weeks or months. Photo and video apps can turn those images and videos into something worth sharing, but there are so many apps to choose from. Quik is relatively new and works with photos and videos captured with your GoPro, phone or other device. To get started, open the app. Quik searches for, analyses and imports videos and photos from your device into a video timeline. It adds transitions and music and hey presto, you have a music video. You can change the style to match the type of video you want. Similar to filters in Instagram and photo apps, the style choices change the stock music, graphics and transitions. Grammy is a style similar to movies, Beauty gives the video an old-movie feel while Flick is in the style of tossing the photos and videos onto a table. You have several choices of stock music to choose from, or you can import your own music from your phone. Once the director (you) is satisfied you can export it to your camera roll or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Quik is available for iOS and Android.

Tech firms in extremism row British Prime Minister Theresa May called for areas of the internet to be closed because tech giants had provided a ‘safe space’ for terrorist ideology. But Google (which owns Youtube) said it had already spent hundreds of millions of pounds on tackling the problem and Facebook (which owns WhatsApp) and Twitter said they were working hard to rid their networks of terrorist activity and support. That pressure intensified following last Saturday night’s attack, which killed seven people and injured 48. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Speaking outside Downing Street on Sunday, May said: ‘We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed.’ ‘Yet that is precisely what the internet and the big companies provide.’ Culture Secretary Karen Bradley said tech companies needed to tackle extremist content, in a similar way to how they had removed indecent images of children. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said that tech firms needed to take down extremist content and limit the amount of end-to-end encryption that terrorists can use. End-to-end encryption renders messages unreadable if they are intercepted, for example by criminals or law enforcement.

Stay Protected McAfee has been tested each year and found at the top notch of malware blocking tasks. PC Mag’s “zero day” (new malware forms) test found McAfee to be the best at malware blocking, proving its robust heuristic detection capabilities. This means that there is very little chance that malware whether it’s new or widespread will pass through McAfee’s scanners. It’s no surprise that Av-comparatives

ranked McAfee at Advanced+ (highest rate) for file detection rate in 2016. However, AVTest only ranked McAfee as 2 nd level behind brands like Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton. Perhaps McAfee’s medium false positive testing results (1.1%) explains this. McAfee offers real-time virus scanning which examines your computer files automatically. The scan feature is configurable with website security levels

Peugeot 3008 SUV wins ‘Car of the Year’ in the Diesel Car Top 50 awards The celebrations that have surrounded the arrival of the AllNew Peugeot 3008 SUV continued at this year’s Diesel Car Top 50 Awards, with two major honours bestowed upon the ground-breaking new model. The All-New Peugeot 3008 SUV was acclaimed as the overall ‘Car of the Year’ in the Diesel Car Top 50, with a second award being earned in its class as the ‘Best Medium SUV’. On behalf of the judging panel at Diesel Car, Editor Ian Robertson commented: “Peugeot has transformed the 3008 into a fully-fledged SUV and created a real winner in the process… its engines are refined and economical, while its suspension is ideally set up to smooth out British roads. It’s a winner in every respect

and we are proud to declare it number one in this year’s Top 50 awards.” Peugeot UK Managing Director, David Peel, added: ‘Peugeot has long been synonymous with diesel engines that set the bar for efficiency and sophistication. The 3008 SUV remains true to this reputation with a range of powertrains that offer the blend of performance, economy and driving enjoyment that today’s motorist demands.’ ‘The car’s many other refinements – notably its class-leading interior quality and technology combine to make it a highly competitive package. The acclaim that has been bestowed upon the All-New 3008 SUV is a fantastic achievement in what is a new segment for us, and we are genuinely thrilled to receive this recognition from the industry experts.’

Harrods Sale A 1983 Range Rover, with Burr Walnut dashboard and an in-car Betamax video player is about to go to auction for a knockdown price. The Harrods Edition Range Rover which cost more than the average house back in the 1980s is to be auctioned off for around £30,000. The unusual off-roader was sprayed in the world’s most famous corner shop’s unmistakable green livery and has ‘Harrods Knightsbridge’ written on the bonnet. It boasts a number of external modifications including a horizontal slatted grill but it is the car’s interior where coachbuilders Wood & Pickett went the extra mile. The seats were trimmed in the finest green Connolly leather while the dashboard was made from burr walnut. It was also kitted out with state-of-the-art technology including air-conditioning and a Sony TV with Betamax for passengers in the back. The result was a car which cost its first owner, a gentleman from Berkshire, a staggering £38,000. This came at a time when the typical home cost £28,000. But while the average home now costs £220,000, the Harrods Edition Range Rover is expecting to fetch between £29,000 and £37,000 when Historics at Brooklands auction it later this month. Mathew Priddy, of Historics at Brooklands, said: “It’s an honour for us to be auctioning such a rare, iconic and magnificently-equipped Range Rover. “It is a sure-fire investment as it is believed to be the only right-hand drive model remaining, having travelled an average of less than 1,000 miles a year since 1983.” In 1998, the Harrods Edition Range Rover was sold to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust based in Gaydon, Warks. The Trust kept it until 2003 when it sold 100 cars at auction, with the Harrods edition off-roader bought by a private collector. Historics will be auctioning the Range Rover Harrods Edition on May 20 at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire. The original Range Rover went on sale in 1970, originally in two-door configuration only, up to 1981, when the first factory four-door was introduced. During the 1970s, the car, regarded as the first luxury 4x4, also became the first vehicle to be exhibited at the Louvre in Paris as an ‘exemplary work of industrial design’.They are now becoming more and more sought after by classic car collectors and investors.

It’s unmistakeable green livery gave a few clues as did ‘Harrods Knightsbridge’ written on the bonnet.

Rising demand has prompted Land Rover to start restoring early models - and selling them for more than £130,000.

Travel stress gets the boot New research reveals more than half the nation enjoy a staycation as much as going abroad, although 42% say fitting everything into the car causes the most stress. Packing the car for all four seasons, fielding the classic “are we there yet?” question, and agreeing on who controls the music are just some of the challenges Brits face when opting for a UK break. But touring the UK has its benefits. One third of us cite the intrigue of discovering what our home country has to offer as a major reason not to go abroad. And a quarter say coming home is less stressful when the family hasn’t been overseas. Ford S-MAX surveyed British holidaymakers to find out where they would be packing up their car and heading to this year for their summer break. Almost two thirds look for family-friendly destinations as their first priority, and more than 60% of these favour a seaside resort. Cornwall topped the list as the most in-demand coastal destination (45%), closely followed by Devon (43%) and Blackpool (35%). London is top choice for a city break. Loading up the car boot was identified as the biggest cause of stress for families taking a driving holiday. But it doesn’t have to be that way, according to packing expert Elika Gibbs from Practical Princess. Working with Ford S-MAX, she compiled the perfect guide for efficient car boot packing. From deflating toys to doing a trial run on packing, Elika’s tips help get the road trip off to a good start, with all the family’s luggage safely stowed in the car. “Whether you are off to the beaches of Cornwall or the rolling hills of Harrogate, it is really important to pack appropriately for your staycation. I always urge families to take the time to think ahead as this will save unwanted stress,” said Elika Gibbs, Practical Princess. “Working with the Ford S-MAX team we compiled a list of top packing tips to help put a stop to pre-staycation confrontation. Packing the boot may sometimes take a couple of tries, however, playing a bit of car boot Tetris could mean you get to squeeze in that picnic set you were simply dying to finally use.” Ford product affairs manager Oliver Rowe said: “The Ford S-MAX has been called a seven-seater coupé, meaning ample room inside for staycation journeys without the exterior looking like a minivan. We have sold over 70,000 in the UK – many taking families to holiday resorts in the British Isles this summer.” Top Packing Tips from ‘The Practical Princess’ 1. Only pack what you need! A ski jacket doesn’t belong on Brighton beach and neither do stilettos at the top of Ben Nevis. 2. Clear the boot space and assess how many empty suitcases you can fit in, whilst still being able to see out of the back windscreen. Identify the vacant space around the cases, which can now be used for additional holdalls, duffles and backpacks. 3. Lay all proposed items per family member out on your bed to create a capsule collection for each person and to avoid double-packing any items. 4. Pack main clothing items into a hard-shell suitcase to avoid creases. Layering garments flat and folding the arms will also help fit more items into the suitcase. 5. Pack extra items into your holdalls. Don’t overdo the cosmetics and invest in travel sized toiletries where possible. Pack wellington boots one inside the other and stuff your socks into your shoes to maximise the space available. 6. Make sure to deflate and flat pack any inflatable toys to save on space. Put a small pump underneath the seat to inflate toys on arrival. 7. The glove compartment provides a vital support for any family road trip. Baby wipes and a few empty plastic bags go a long way – for sickness as well as rubbish. 8. Provide children with a small-sized travel bag containing toys, entertainment and snacks to keep them occupied on your journey. 9. When packing the boot, put the biggest suitcase at the bottom of the boot, second biggest on top of that and then build a pyramid around this. This may take a couple of attempts to ensure you fit your suitcases in the most efficient way possible. 10. Finally, utilise your cars additional storage units, such as door pockets, under seats, underfloor storage areas and spare footwell space. Secure luggage with a cargo net where possible to avoid cases moving around.

All Blacks receive top Spanish sports award

As if to prove that rugby is a growing sport in Spain, the All Blacks have recently been honoured with a top Spanish sporting award. The team famed for performing the haka war dance derived from New Zealand's indigenous Maori, and for fielding rugby greats such as the late Jonah Lomu, was given the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports,” for being an example of racial and cultural integration.” Speaking in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo where the organisers are based, jury president and former Spanish athlete Abel Anton said the All Blacks had racked up a "very

high percentage of victories, which puts them among the most successful teams in any sport". "Having become an icon of the sport worldwide, the New Zealand team is also considered an example of racial and cultural integration, conveying values of unity, friendship, solidarity and sportsmanship," Said Anton. He added the team helped contribute to "the unity of New Zealanders of different origins, as symbolised by the haka". Coached by Steve Hansen, the All Blacks have won three of the eight Rugby World Cups so far - in 1987, 2011 and 2015 and only last week the British Lions landed in Auckland to

start their three test tour. Andrew Jenks, New Zealand's ambassador in Madrid told The Local: "What a great honour for New Zealand to win recognition of both the sporting excellence of the All Blacks and the good sportsmanship and sporting values epitomized by the All Blacks.” Rugby is gaining popularity across Spain, a nation traditionally dominated by soccer, and Spain now boasts 212 clubs, a rise of 15 per cent over the past three years. The Princess of Asturias awards will be presented in the autumn in Oviedo at a grand ceremony chaired by the King and Queen of Spain.

All hail the conquering heroes Spain’s capital city became one giant street party last weekend, as first, the fans of Real Madrid celebrated their club’s 4-1 victory over Juventus in the Champions League final in Cardiff on Saturday, then returned the following evening to welcome home the ‘Living Legends’ of the history making team. Cristiano Ronaldo was once again hailed as Real Madrid's hero as fans crammed into the club's Santiago Bernabeu stadium and streets across the Spanish capital to wildly celebrate a record 12th European Cup win on Saturday. While Ronaldo's double sentenced Juventus to a comprehensive 4-1 defeat at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, nearly 2,000 kilometres away over 70,000 supporters congregated to watch the match on eight giant screens erected on the Bernabeu turf. Then, thousands of delirious Real Madrid fans poured onto the streets of the Spanish capital to catch a glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates on Sunday as they paraded the Champions League trophy for a record 12th time. The record breaking team, as well as winning back-to-back Champions Leagues, also beat Barcelona to La Liga two weeks ago to

complete a first league and european Cup double for 59 years. Ronaldo sported a newly cropped haircut

and he and captain Sergio Ramos led the traditional festivities for a major Real celebration as the players greeted local gov-

ernment dignitaries before parading the famous trophy in an open top bus around the Cibeles fountain in the city centre. Strict security measures were visible across the city in light of recent terror attacks in London and Manchester. Ronaldo scored twice in Real's 4-1 thrashing of Juventus in Cardiff on Saturday as the Spanish giants became the first side to retain the Champions League. "The players have entered into the legend of Real Madrid and of football, as has our coach," said club president Florentino Perez, as he reserved special praise for Zinedine Zidane. The Frenchman, who himself won the Champions League as a legendary player for Real between 2001 and 2006, has enjoyed spectacular success since taking his first role in senior management just 18 months ago. A third Champions League win in four years has drawn comparisons to the great Real side that were crowned champions for the five inaugural years of the champions league forerunner, the European Cup between 1955 and 1960.

Tributes to the man with one of ‘the most beautiful smiles in football’ The football world was in a state of shock last Monday, when news broke of the death of 30 year old Chiek Tiote.

against Arsenal, with Cheick’s incredible goal. I loved him. He was everything that you want in a Newcastle player. Life is not fair sometimes and I will remember Cheick Tioté as a giant of a midfielder whom I loved to manage.” Newcastle released a statement which read: “We are devastated to have learnt of the tragic passing of Cheick Tioté at the age of just 30. The thoughts of everyone at Newcastle United are with Cheick’s family, friends, team-mates and everyone connected with the clubs he represented.” “Cheick was one of the best we had in terms of his attitude,” Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley told BBC Radio 5 live. “He was also really funny in the dressing room. He had a brilliant smile and he lit up a room when he smiled. He was fantastic.” Former England boss Steve McClaren, who was his manager at both Dutch side FC Twente and Newcastle, added: “I knew him first as a young player at Twente. He was the toughest player I’ve ever seen. “On the field and in training he was such a competitor. He wanted to win every game, kick every player and win every tackle. Adding that Tiote “Had the most beautiful smile in football.”

Tributes flooded in from previous managers and fellow players, for the former Newcastle United midfielder, who died after reportedly suffering a heart attack while training with his club in China. An Ivory Coast international, Tiote joined the Chinese League One side Beijing Enterprises in January having spent seven years at St James’ Park. He was reported to have collapsed at the training ground on Monday and been taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A statement from Beijing Enterprises added: “During a routine training session at 6pm today, Ivory Coast player Cheick Tioté suddenly fainted and the club immediately rushed him to hospital, but unfortunately efforts to save him failed and he passed away at 7pm. The player’s relatives have been informed. Beijing Enterprises football club Check Tiote, expresses its deep sorrow and profound joined Chinese condolences for Mr Tioté’s untimely side Beijing death.” Enterprises It is understood that Tioté has been after spending seven years living in China on his own since leaving at Newcastle the north-east in January and his wife United. Madah is expecting their third child this week. His former manager at Newcastle, Alan Pardew, said he was devastated by the news. “From the moment I arrived at Newcastle Cheick was a wonderful presence around the dressing room and his performances on the field often defied belief,” said Pardew. “There were days when he must have covered every blade of grass on a football field. “None of us will ever forget that incredible day when our Newcastle team came from 4-0 down to draw an unbelievable Premier League game
