by Jimmy Grayling The CoSTA del Sol will erupt in flames tonight (Friday) as municipalities up and down the coast celebrate the magical Saint John Bonfires [hogueras de San Juan] festival. Coinciding with the summer solstice, the shortest night of the year, and rooted in ancient tradition, the event is among the most important in Spanish culture and should not be missed. It is normally held on the beach with raging bonfires rage and screaming fireworks, while revellers also light smaller fires of their own in permitted areas. In Malaga province, it is also typical to burn cloth dolls known as Juas before leaping over the flames three times in order to cleanse the soul. At midnight, everyone runs to the sea to
jump the first seven waves of the new day before taking the plunge to guarantee a year of health and good luck, thus combining the purifying elements of fire and water. other traditions include washing the face in the sea, a river or natural spring for eternal beauty. Inland, locals may even remove their clothes and walk through dewy meadows to fulfil the water part of the ritual. one custom peculiar to the Costa del Sol is said to have originated in Torremolinos. Participants, especially youngsters, write three wishes or requests to Saint John on a piece of paper which is then thrown into the fire. Some may also add undesirable aspects of their lives, such as vices, to be devoured by the flames. organised events are planned throughout
the coast, with details available on council websites, although many will opt to hit the beach of their own accord, watching the multitude of firework displays from afar. Particularly popular options include Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella beaches, where certain areas are designated for the lighting of fires, while in Malaga City Malagueta and Misericordia beaches offer live music and other entertainment. In the mountains of ronda, the village of Benaojan is famed for its Mountain Night of San Juan, with a free barbecue, music, dancing and other festivities. Whether on holiday or a long-term resident, tonight is the night to get involved in a truly memorable example of how the Spanish celebrate like no other european nation.

Works will include adding 300 parking spaces below ground and 230 rooms. the hotel’s spa takes up an impressive 5,293 square metres, the hotel 35,424, the private green 15,056 and the prvate sports area 1,915 square metres, with costs expected to reach €60 million to buy and refurbish the huge space. the investment will involve employing 200 staff directly, and 500 others indirectly. Ready to mingle TORREBLANCA’S PARquE dE LA PRESAS has hosted an intercultural party designed to bring residents together to speak about issues concerning them and to get to know the town’s outdoor spaces. Last Saturday from noon the park was transformed into a party featuring free workshops, paella and drinks, as well as a performance by Paco and Gina. The event, which was organised by Isabel Moreno, Councillor for Citizen Participation and Maria Jesus Pascual, Councillor for Green Spaces, began with workshops aimed at kids before serving up traditional local fare. Three thousand postcards were sent out to residents publicising the day, which was part of a scheme organised by the Mayor and council team to promote the area and meet with locals. The event also aimed to make green spaces such as Parque de las Presas known to non-locals who may not be aware of the area, which offers abundant vegetation and wildlife. The council now say further similar events will take place in different locations in the future.

€22,900 invested to save lives
Beach boom BEACHES on the Costa del Sol are set to be cleaner than ever this summer with the addition of three new cleaning boats in Axarquia, bringing the fleet’s total to 14. The vessels, which operate between Rincon de la Victoria and nerja, eliminate hydrocarbons as well as collecting solid waste and jellyfish. Gregorio Campo, President of the Commonwealth of Costa del Sol-Axarquia Municipalities, said he was working with the University of Malaga to study how best to keep the area’s coastline clean, explaining “it is a tourist attraction that we must take care of and also important for locals who have a right to enjoy the sea at its best.” The boats, which are spread across Axarquia, clean from Monday to Friday, 11am to 8pm everywhere expect Nerja and Torrox where they operate until 7pm. They will continue until 15 September.
Life-saving kit: one of defibrillators in place
by Sally Underwood ESTEPONA’S COuNCil has invested tens of thousands of euros in expanding the number of defibrillators placed in local Police vehicles. Officers will now receive training on how to use the life-saving equipment since they are generally the first on the scene in the case of heart attacks. The Council is also kitting out all the town’s sports facilities and municipal buildings with defibrillators. Pilar Fernandez-Figares, Councillor for Personnel, has said four portable defibrillators will be placed in local
Police cars when they are on patrol, which a fifth machine has been purchased to be used by municipal staff at large events like fairs, concerts and festivals. She added all staff will be trained to use them. A further eight machines have also been purchased to be installed in the sports centres la lobilla, Santo Tomas, Sa Fernando, Cancelada, las Viñas and in the Francisco Muñoz Perez stadium. She added the three existing defibrillators in the El Carmen sports centre, the Centro Cultural Padre Manuel and in the Puertosol building will be replaced. After putting the project out to
Narcotics found in half of motorists
ALMoST HALf of drivers in Malaga stopped on suspicion of drug driving test positive for having narcotics in their system, according to figures released by the Spanish Government. Minister for the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, has said the Government is now considering a series of measures to combat the rising problem. He explained one option being explored is referring drivers who commit two or more drink or drug offences in under two years to health professionals to determine whether they have an addiction problem before they regain their licence. Police carried out 1,468 tests last year, 609 of which confirmed drug use, a total of 41.4%. The most commonly detected detected was cannabis at 60.92%, followed by cocaine at 24.46%, and then amphetamines at 6.36%, methamphetamines at 5.91% and opioids at 2.29%. The figures also showed the number of tests carried out in recent years had grown significantly from 77 in 2012 and 2013 to 1,021 in 2014 and 2,318 in 2015. Conversely, breathalyser tests carried to measure alcohol levels have dropped from 205,511 in 2012 to 132,145 last year.
tender, the company ANEK-S3 was awarded the deal service for providing the machines at a cost of €22,900 plus VAT, several thousand euros less than expected. The devices will not replace medical attention but instead allow heart attack victims to be treated until the emergency services arrive. Ms Fernandez-Figares explained, “being able to act immediately when someone has had a heart attack until health workers arrive is paramount to saving a life.” She added eight people will be trained in using the machines for each one purchased.
Accessibility improved MARBELLA’S CounCiL has undertaken a series of improvements to increase accessibility to the beach in the El Rodeito area of nueva Andalucia, one of the town’s most popular spaces. Councillor for Mobility, Miguel Diaz, explained that the area has historically presented problems with accessibility, "with a very narrow two-way street and inconvenient parking, which made getting across very difficult." He added “it was lao worrying from a point of view of emergencies because of the traffic that used to build up.” He explained the road layout has been restructured, generating 63 parking spaces, as well as disabled bays as the beach is expected to offer adapted bathing services. in addition, a pedestrian crossing has also been installed giving immediate access to the beach.
Streets apart
Mari Carmen Carmona and Ros Liarte pose in front of a road name
by Sally Underwood STUDENTS aT Mijas’ IES Cartima have launched a campaign to increase the number of streets named after women, after finding the number is 42, compared to 178 named after men. The Council has now decided to name all new roads after illustrious women after the school’s project Merezco una calle (I deserve a street) carried out the research of 220 road names and found that of the few streets named after women, a remarkable 60% took the name of saints rather than famous female figures. The town’s Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, has met with Rosa Liarte, a teacher from IES Cartima, to discuss the campaign, commenting, “we found it very interesting because it shows it still takes so much for women to be noticed. The council want to prioritise equality which is why we wanted to get involved with the project
Rosa has presented to us.” The campaign began in an Equality and Social Change class when students were dealing with the issue of “backdoor sexism.” Through their research they found the number of streets named after men was almost four time the amount named after women. Ms Liarte explained “the children questioned whether sexism still existed so I set out to analyse the streets of Cartama to see how many of them had a man's name and how many women, and when they saw the results, the children could not believe the results.” Now both the students and the teacher are campaigning to the council, and have caught their attention after carrying out an analysis of Mijas’ roads. The council has now committed to using women’s names for any new roads built in the extension of Las Lagunas and are now taking suggestions on the names of important female figures from students.
Missing expat, 82, found alive BRIAN HAYES, a retired BT senior manager from Liverpool, has been found after going missing on the Costa del Sol for over 30 hours. It is thought Mr Hayes, a holidymaker who is now recovering in Spain, got lost and fell after going to put out the rubbish from his apartment in Capristrano, Nerja. He and his wife Jean, who had visited the area five times before, were due to fly home from the two-week holiday just hours later when he went missing. The Guardia Civil immediately put out a missing person appeal, describing Mr Hayes and the clothes he had been wearing and calling on members of the public for information. The pensioner was eventually found “disorientated” and unable to move, lying by the side of the road to Maro without food or water in the heat by a passing van driver. The police have said Mr Hayes was “lucky” to be found, while his daughter Amanda Wilkins, who was on holiday with him, has thanked friends, the Guardia Civil and neighbours for their help.

Awards for the elderly OVER 500 older residents have received diplomas for getting involved in this year’s series of council-run workshops in Fuengirola. by Sally Underwood The Town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, handed out the certificates at the salon Real in an event which demonstrated the success of Fuengirola Council’s programme of activities for all ages. The free workshops put on for older residents included crafts, oil painting, regional dance classes, ballroom dancing, digital photography, introduction to english language, literacy classes as well as IT classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The courses were taught at a variety of centres around Fuengirola, including Puebla Lucia, Los Pacos, elola and Los Boliches, giving older residents the opportunity to get to know other areas of the town as well as learning new activities. Ms Mula explained, "the truth is it is exciting to see that our older people have a restlessness and desire to get involved in all our activities and it fills us with joy seeing that they feel like trying something new, having fun, getting involved, learning and training,” adding, “we are very impressed that those who might otherwise become isolated instead decide to paint, do crafts, learn english or computer science… and that is a reason to celebrate and also an incentive to continue to offer these activities.”
Some of the workshops’ attendees receive their certificates
she continued, “prioritising our older residents in the best investment any council can make, which is why we put on more activities and new initiatives every year to encourage them to take part, because it is not enough just to organise them, we have to get people involved too.” Those who took part in this year’s workshop will automatically have a place reserved for next year, and the list of
Bus schedule extended
Nuria Rodriguez: explains the changes
MIJAS’S CounCIl has expanded the M-119 bus schedule for the summer period, with extended hours during the week and four further trips on weekends and holidays. The route, which connects all the urbanisations around Mijas, will now run for two further hours Monday to Friday and four trips on weekends. The line, which has only been in operation for a year, has been a hit, and already adapted to client demands for further stops at the la Cala health centre and Miramar shopping centre. The route now stops at CC Miramar, El Castillo, El Faro, Chaparral, oasis, la Cala, Botanical Garden, Torrenueva, Miraflores, riviera and Calahonda. Nuria Rodriguez, Councillor for Transport and Mobility, explained, “although we have had to adjust the schedules due to our budget line we have, we have again managed to increase the service hours, including on weekends and holidays, so that tourists can visit our town any day, or our residents can go to the Mall.” The bus has also been adapted for people with reduced mobility so they can easily benefit from the service. Ms Rodriguez comment, "we are very proud to have met a historic demand, so residents can make use of this bus and travel freely along the coast, as well as to la Cala itself.”
those who have been admitted onto the next round will be published in Puebla Lucia on 18 July. Those not automatically enrolled can register until 7 september. The Council’s Department for older People is the one of the most active local government areas, offering free workshops without a waiting list in areas including tai chi, art, dancing and crafts.
Race to prevent drought THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA has still not begun work to save the Costa del Sol from its drought fears by clearing the Rubite tunnel and connecting the Rio Chillar with the general network, two months after announcing a series of watering restrictions. In April, the Ministry of Environment promised the works would begin "imminently" and were expected to take four months, saving around two cubic hectometres of water in the La Viñuela reservoir each year. Farmers have since faced irrigations cuts one day a week and are calling on the Junta to fulfil its commitment to connect the Rio Chillar as well as sign off on plans to build an underground network, installing three pipes connecting drought afflicted areas with fuller reservoirs. This project, which was promised ten years ago, is now said to be started in October. This has done nothing to quash drought fears over this summer, however, with Malaga city forced to use 1.5 hectometres from La Viñuela reservoir, and 47 hectometres from Guadalhorce. The network would see one pipe from Concepcion to Viñuela, another from Iznajar in Cordoba and the third from Granada. Farmers do not believe help will be forthcoming however, with the spokesman from an agricultural group in Antequera saying, "there has been much talk about a water highway, which would connect up the network from Manilva to Nerja. But there are no deadlines.” The Junta’s General Director of Planning and Management of Public Water, Juan Serrato has said there is enough water to last until the end of the summer.

Politicians sling mud over landfill
Picking up the pieces: politicians fight to work out who is responsible
by Sally Underwood THE PARTIDO POPULAR Spokesman for the Environment in the Andalucian Parliament, Patricia Navarro, has blamed the Junta de Andalucia for Nerja’s illegal dump at Rio de la Miel. The politician claims the Junta were responsible for the site because it was located in an abandoned quarry in the Government controlled Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. Ms Navarro says the Andalucian Government gave their tacit approval to the company running the illegal dump, which “with its knowledge did not comply with regulations.”
She claimed, “not only did it let the company get away without complying with the specifications agreed but even returned the guarantee deposit given without imposing any fines.” The Guardia Civil have now arrested 12 people, are investigating 25 others and have confiscated €5 million worth of property following the scandal. The site was previously a working quarry owned by the council and was later used as a dumping ground for 16 years, between 2000 and September 2016. The investigation, which began in August last year, has also uncovered a potential fraud case worth €2.5 million to cover the costs of rightfully disposing of the waste.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has since labelled the landfill “a genuine environmental disaster” and has been investigating the matter following complaints filed by the Association of Construction and Demolition Waste Management Companies of Andalusia (AGRECA) and by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Construction Waste Management Companies and Demolition, for illegal and uncontrolled dumping of construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, pruning waste as well as vegetation, plastics. It is thought the waste now poses a potential threat to both the environment and human health.

Eight brave men bare all by John Smith MEN arE less inclined than women to check for cancer, so eight celebrities were persuaded to recreate the infamous scene from the Full Monty as a reminder. It is now 20 years since the collection of unemployed steelworkers from Sheffield decided to reveal all, making them more daring than the Chippendales, performing to the Tom Jones song You Can Leave Your Hat On which they do until the last minute. The eight celebrities who nervously agreed to take part were reality star and Mijas restaurateur Elliott Wright, McFly drummer Harry Judd, ballet dancer, Wayne Sleep who has suffered from prostate cancer,, former Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster, Emmerdale actor, Matthew Wolfenden, TV presenter, Dom Littlewood, and Death in Paradise and red Dwarf actor, Danny John Jules, together with host alexander armstrong. Due to other commitments, they had just six days to learn the routine from Diversity leader ashley Banjo and there was a great deal of initial shyness before they finally appeared in front of a huge audience at the London Palladium in a performance which was transmitted by ITV1 and then repeated. The TV special was supported by the charities Movember, Cancer research, Everyman and Prostate Cancer UK to raise awareness and Elliott Wright explained that he had joined in as “My dad got prostate cancer two years ago, and he wasn’t quick enough and it spread, and when prostate cancer spreads you can’t get rid of it.” Elliott and his father Eddie regularly become involved in local events around La Cala de Mijas to raise awareness of the dangers of prostate cancer and to help raise funds for local charity Positively Blue.

With some 30 booths offering a wide range of products as well as workshops and cooking demonstrations, a large number of people made their eager way to taste and try the produce.
Tooled up Police on the costa del Sol have been sent emergency packs, costing €1940, equipping them for various disasters. The 12 kits, which will accompany Velez Malaga’s local Police in their patrol cars, provide tools to deal with fire, and explosions, as well as exposure to asbestos, dead animals, hazardous spills, road accidents and accidents at work. Ana campos, councillor for Human Resources, said police are often the first on any scene, sometimes facing hazardous situations without any safety equipment. She said the kits will help achieve “the council’s zero work accidents objective which we set at the beginning of our term.” Victor Gonzalez, head of the Municipal Prevention Service, said the packs will stop the police “from having to use towels in emergency situations to protect themselves from smoke, debris dust, toxic particles in the air or smells when dealing with death.” The kits include lists identifying each piece of equipment and explaining when it should be used, two pairs of PVc gloves, one pair of thermal protection gloves,200 pairs of nitrile gloves, 10 masks protecting against solid particles, two masks protecting against organic vapours, protective goggles, first aid kit and 10 thermal blankets.

Don’t get caught out this summer AVOID fAcIng fines of up to €3000 this summer by knowing your rights when it comes to Malaga Council’s rules on visiting the beach, which have been in place since 2004. Beach-goers could find a sun-filled day out becomes more expensive than they planned if bathers fish, use shampoo in showers, bring their dog, barbecue or use a stereo. With fines starting at €300 for minor infractions and reaching thousands for the worst cases, it is important to be aware of the limitations of using these public spaces. The most serious offences are considered those that risk harming the environment, including littering, starting fires or barbecuing outside of permitted times like the festival of San Juan. Food vendors also risk high fines, due to the risk posed by eating food exposed to high temperatures. Lower penalties are saved for those digging in the sand or playing football less than six metres away from other bathers, as this is considered to be a nuisance. Fishing fans are also out of luck, and are limited from fishing before 10am and after 9pm from 1 June to 30 September, in an effort to prevent accidents. Other limitations include bans on advertising and camping, where anyone erecting a tent will have to immediately move on if asked by the police.

105 ‘diseased’ dogs free OVER OnE hundREd dogs have been rescued from a tiny compound on the Costa del Sol by officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil’s nature branch (Seprona). The Judicial Authority has now ruled the dogs, which were found in Rincon de la Victoria, be handed over to a welfare centre, after allegedly being kept in a plot in Arroyo de la Granadillas measuring less than 100 square metres, and suffering from scabies, leishmaniasis, fleas or other health problems. According to media reports, however, the owner of the compound, Esmerelda Moreno, who lives on a caravan next to the land, is said to be outraged, claiming the dogs were wrongfully taken from her after a complaint from a neighbour. She commented, “I have all the papers in order,” adding, “we are rescuing animals, everything is legal but it seems that there are various people who want to stop us rescuing abandoned and abused dogs.” She explained, “we have had all the paperwork in place with the Junta de Andalucia since October and have asked the council for help on many occasions but they have ignored us,” saying the dogs “are my life, like my children… I need help. Let me take care of them again, because if not they are going to be put down.” It is reported the dogs were taken from Ms Moreno after a neighbour complained and the council launched an investigation, apparently finding the compound did not meet minimum hygiene standards. The head of the don Animal rescue centre, Jose Antonio Villodres, said the charity was prepared to take the dogs in and would “take care of them, feed them and give them medication where necessary.”

Singer Lemar to make his first appearance in Spain by John Smith MASTER of Soul and RnB Lemar who has sold millions of records will be performing for the first time in Spain at the Estepona Auditorium on Saturday. Currently finishing his latest album, he agreed to speak to the EWN Media Group and give some insights into the man behind the voice by responding to a series of questions He decided to make this short visit in order to offer his support to five young members of the Rising Stars project who will also be performing at the show. Some musicians who have become famous adopt a different persona but Lemar is softly spoken, intelligent and charming, giving up a lot of time (especially after a dental problem) to answer all of our questions. Tickets for the event which include the Brown Sugar Soul Band, the Rising Stars, Rachelle fisher and dancers followed by Lemar cost €25 and can be obtained at the Auditorium ticket kiosk or www.eventbrite.co.uk. A lot of information is easily available through the internet, but the following questions and answers do perhaps help readers to know a little more about the singer and family man who has two young children, two BRITS and three MoBo awards together with a passion for performance. What is your greatest fear? Not trying. I think its good in life to try for every dream you have. The fear of growing old and saying 'if only I had tried this or... I wish I had done that.... is what keeps me wanting to try as many things as possible. What is your favourite food? Chicken – I like chicken in most forms. Who would you invite for a meal dead, alive or fictional? Me - 10 years ago. That way I could give myself some advice and avoid a few situations. What is your secret pleasure? Silence. My world is filled with sounds and people. I like to occasionally get away from the madness and be alone in silence with just my thoughts for an hour or so. I think it’s healthy. Which is your favourite band? When I was a teenager it was Boyz II Men and Jodeci. I like the R&B flavour and their vocal harmonies were crazy. Currently maybe the Chainsmokers. I do like a lot of the Coldplay albums as well.

Where do you find the energy to keep going? from life. Life is for living. You have to keep going otherwise what else is there? The thought that I can inspire someone through music and my own experiences / interpretation of life is what keeps me ticking over. Which public figure do you dislike the most? Trump hasn’t done himself any favours. I’m not sure whether its intentional or just knee jerk mistake but… something doesn’t sit very well so far. Although – in recent events or PM hasn’t done so well either so… What song would you like played at your funeral? Kool and the Gang – Celebration. Because hopefully I will go at a time when I have lived out most of my dreams so it will be a happy occasion not a lost one. I want to go out with a smile knowing I have lived to the fullest I could have. What do you like about yourself most? I think I have a good amount of patience. That’s a good quality I think (sometimes). Who would play you in the film of your life? I used to say Will Smith because I think he’s a great actor. But he’s older than me. I guess they could find a way around that. Hmmm. What was your ambition when a child? To be a doctor. That really worked out didn’t it! What is your first memory? The first thing that came into my head was sitting in my mother’s room and her singing in the summer while walking around the house. She was always singing. What question should I have asked? Any new music coming Lemar? YES – I am nearly done recording a new album. Can’t wait for people to hear it. Hope to get out on the road soon. Bless! X

Where to stay for a night in Gibraltar The choice is getting better. by John Smith SOMETIMES a day trip to Gibraltar is simply too rushed especially if you want to catch some of the sights or want to attend a concert. In his regular look at things to do on the Rock, John Smith gives some idea of what accommodation is likely to be available. Gibraltar has not historically been a great place for short term accommodation other than hotels as the lack of housing was a major problem until about 15 years ago when land reclamation meant that there was more room available on which to build. Now, the ubiquitous airbnb has reached the Rock and has more than 60 apartments, rooms or even boats available for rent in some very attractive developments. Gibraltar has a number of narrow streets, old buildings and steep hills with little parking available in certain areas therefore it is very important to decide whereabouts you want to stay on the Rock and that the area is actually suitable for your age and condition, especially as there are new residents only parking rules in place. Having said this, if you are fit, much of where you are likely to want to go will be within walking distance although some people prefer to park their cars in the new car park by the border in La Linea and then walk across with their bags to pick up a taxi. There are six decent hotels in Gibraltar ranging from one to five aa stars with prices dependent upon the facilities. actually based close to Main Street is the one star Cannon Hotel with 18 rooms, some with and some without facilities with its own bar and restaurant offering a cheap option for those travelling on a budget. also close to Main Street, near to the Convent where the Governor is based, the three star Bristol Hotel, the oldest in Gibraltar has 60 rooms and offers air conditioning, wifi and some free parking for guests. It is quite accessible by car, has a large lounge, lifts, gardens and a swimming pool. Finally in the Main Street area although a bit of a nightmare to find and park if you are driving is the four star O’Callaghan Elliott hotel, part of a small Irish chain with 123 rooms and all of the facilities you would expect from a good quality hotel. It boasts a rooftop restaurant,

swimming pool and fitness centre and is currently undergoing refurbishment as the building is about 50 years old. Probably the most famous hotel in Gibraltar is the art Deco inspired Rock Hotel which sits at the base of the Rock overlooking alameda Gardens. Boasting all of the facilities you would expect from a four star hotel it offers private parking as well a separate garden with swimming pool and most of the rooms have been updated. It is a bit of a walk into the centre of town and quite a steep walk back, so a taxi at least one way would be recommended. Way out of town but perched above the Caleta Beach which has good facilities for swimming in the sea (don’t forget this is on the atlantic side, so
no matter how hot the sand is, the sea is going to be cold) and quite a few bars and restaurants is the four star Caleta Hotel. Like all of the others, it offers every one of the facilities you would expect but be warned, the Barbary Macaques are thieving little nuisances who regularly target the hotel and guests are firmly advised against feeding them or leaving windows open whilst out of the room. also, be aware that the sound of the sea which can be quite soothing can also be irritating if the wind is up and the sea crashes against the rocks below. The latest addition to the range of hotels in Gibraltar is the five star luxury Sunborn Yacht Hotel, situated in Ocean Village. The hotel offers a range of bars and restaurants including a franchise run by the trendy La Sala Group which books regular musical guests. again the Sunborn offers a great range of services, is totally stable and is situated in a very modern dock surrounded by bars, restaurants and even a casino but is also a short walk away from Main Street. There is somewhere to stay for everyone in Gibraltar and the choice is getting better all of the time.

Press pack MIJAS’ CounCIl is sifting through the 1,700 photos submitted by the town’s 256 budding photographers who participated in this year’s Enfoca Mijas competition. by Sally Underwood The conTesT, which is in its ninth year, sees a jury made up of professionals, including Juan Miguel cervera and Pepe Arias, determine the winner, who will be announced at an awards ceremony on 30 June at the Town hall. The jury: sift through entries to find the best photographs

A special woman who helps street children by John Smith HAVING lIVed most of her working life in Yorkshire, Anna McKann spent more than 20 years involved in childcare but now passes a lot of time in Spain. For 18 years she has shared her time between the UK and Spain, firstly in Calahonda before taking on two Spanish properties one in la Cala de Mijas and the other in Almeria which is quieter (and cheaper) where she ‘hides’ herself for July and August. The mother of two and grandmother of three loves Spain because of the ambience, fresh sea air, climate most of the year and the Mediterranean diet and says that in her heart she feels Spanish. Also in this caring woman’s heart was the realisation that there were street children around the world who had nothing and the call of God took her to Mexico where she discovered for herself the terrible life that many young and abandoned children lived and vowed to do something to help as many as she could. The plight of the children persuaded her to set up her own self-publishing operation Sharon House as well as a charity RCC International which takes profits from the books she writes and uses the income to support street children. Now, with a number of books produced under the generic Hispanic word Chavos - which refers to the very young - her novels tell the story of a young street girl and her adventures. Anna uses her time in Almeria to write her books in peace and solitude and she also has an ambition to see her work reach an even wider audience. “I have just adapted one of my books for stage and as I am
Anna McKann an educator for many years
a great musical theatre fan, have been working with some fab musicians. The plan is to find a suitable theatre and get this production released in 2018 on the coast” she proudly told RTN, continuing “It will be a mostly young people cast so I will be speaking with some of the performing arts schools out here. There is plenty of young talent, I'm sure of that.” As her company expands, helping other authors to publish and promote their own children’s book, so she has been able to increase her staffing so that they can also develop more products based on the Chavos stories. Anna is eager to inspire others through her charity work and regularly visits schools to speak to children about a variety of issues including abandonment, street life, drugs usage
and the importance of friendship. Still anxious to work with children in Spain she has teamed up with the Kids on the Costa Magazine and Marbella life Style Rtv to launch a children's creative writing competition on the coast. #inspiringcostakids For details of all of the Chavos books and the creative writing competition make sure that you visit www.sharonhousepublishing.com especially as schools are about to break up and children may well be looking for inspiration. As a member of Costa Women, Anna thinks that the concept created by Ali Meehan is a very useful one and helps to create a closer community.

From plucking strings to knocking on wood
Nik and Lola in the Oakland Furniture Store
WHEN Nik PrEscott stopped at his favourite café in Fuengirola for a cup of coffee, he didn’t for a moment think that it would change his life. After spending 10 years in the royal Navy where he started to play guitar and then studied Jazz at Leeds college of Music before becoming a professional musician ending up at the Yamaha school of Music whilst earning living playing in different bands in the Uk including fun with tribute group Badness. He then decided that he wasn’t happy in the cold and wet north of England and moved over to spain accompanies by his guitar and started to earn a living as a musician in both spain and Portugal, but he eventually realised that many singers wanted to use full-on backing tracks rather than hire a guitarist or a band. it was an easy move to return to teaching as there was quite a demand for qualified musicians who had experience of working with the young and he soon settled down to an academic life in Fuengirola. During school holidays last year that he was enjoying his coffee overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean he fell by chance into a conversation with another customer who had a huge amount of paper work which intrigued him. that businessman was actually the Managing Director of oak Land Furniture spain who was just getting ready to launch the very popular furniture range in spain with the first showroom due to open in san Pedro de Alcantara. What had started as a friendly chat, unknown to him had turned into a job interview and he was amazed when after an hour of chatting he was suddenly invited to run the oak Land Furniture showroom. somewhat at a loss for words and not sure if this was a real offer, he asked why he would be suitable for a job that he had never undertaken before. the response was quickly written on a serviette, stating
simply; “you’re polite, not pushy, intelligent and a people’s person – we’ll teach you the rest!” it took 24 hours for Nik to decide that this was going to be a fantastic opportunity for him and if the MD of this much regarded company thought he was good enough to work for them, it was a great honour. Almost in a whirlwind he was sent to the Uk for full training about the ethos of the company and the huge range of product it has on offer before returning for the san Pedro showroom opening in october 2016.
I like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in Spain who want quality product, I understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because I don't like them myself in just eight months, he has been involved in 900 successful sales but sees himself more as an adviser than a salesperson, wanting to ensure that customers obtain exactly what they need with the minimum of fuss and difficulty. Apart from the large showroom, the website plays an important role for the company which now offers furniture delivery across spain as well as Belgium, France, Germany, Holland and Portugal and in order to promote sales to spanish customers they are developing a spanish language site as
well as a sofa only site. Nik has also been joined in store by the bilingual Lola Lopez as he admits his spanish isn't the greatest and wants to ensure that spanish customers receive exactly the same service as he offers English speaking clients. they are looking forward to making the stores 1,000th and it is mooted that that customer will receive a very special surprise gift when the transaction is completed. “i left spain a musician and returned to spain as a wood furniture specialist" says Nik who obviously enjoys the work that he undertakes. When asked what the key to both his success and that of oak Land Furniture spain was, he is quick to say, without any hint of falsehood; "Well firstly it's the quality of the products and the brand, it's exceptional and the customers coming in store clearly see that. i'm no salesman but i'm now fully trained as a furniture specialist so all i have to do is advise when asked. “i like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in spain who want quality product, i understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because i don't like them myself! “Each customer i like to think i give a full and helpful service understanding their needs and requirements on a personal basis. Whilst we are a global brand there's no reason why you can't give a full personal service when a customer comes to see me and that's exactly what i offer. “Every customer through the door has a requirement and at all times i hope i cater to their needs. i'm just Nik in the grand scale of things and give my full attention to everybody's requirements whether it be a single bedside cabinet to a full house furnish" so if you are looking for that personal service and quality solid oak furniture or a quality sofa Nik Prescott is the man to speak to! www.oaklandfurniturespain.com
Life’s a lottery by
Colin Bird
Some time ago there was a deeply moving tV advertisement featuring a war veteran Jack Jennings. He had travelled back to thailand to visit the graves of army comrades who had died from appalling treatment at the hands of the Japanese. the trip was provided by National Lottery funding that was part of the Heroes Return scheme, and it was heart warming to hear Jack’s account of how after more than sixty years, his haunted dreams had been finally laid to rest. this was indeed a worthwhile way to spend some of the billions of lottery money that has been raked in over the years. But what exactly constitutes a worthy cause? if you happen to be an origami fan in Wolverhampton who feels there are few facilities in the area where others of a like mind can meet and discuss their art, then for you this is obviously a worthy cause. Likewise devil worshippers in Gravesend and basket weavers in Namibia. extreme examples maybe, but each could make a case for receiving a slice of the action because to them, their passion is a worthy enterprise. But then some of the recipients of lottery cash down the years have been questionable to say the least. millions have been pumped into exploring faiths and religion, but what the hell does that mean. Jehovah’s Witnesses and the mormons operate a door to door service completely free of charge and usually when i am in the middle of lunch. if i want to explore other faiths, then i can do so at my leisure and without cost or supervision.
Nearly 20million has been earmarked to re-generate town centres that are dying largely due to the granting of planning approval to the likes of tesco and Primark who build hypermarkets and shopping malls on out of town sites. Reverse this trend and we will be on the way to solving the problem. No lottery grants needed. And don’t get me started on the £1.5

billion to museums and art galleries. With some of the garbage that is passed off to the public as art such as unmade beds and dead cows, it’s an obscenity that this amount of public money can be spent in such a way. We are talking about significant amounts of cash here, which if used wisely could make life enhancing changes for many deserving British people.

Dr Strangelove of Europe
by
Michael Walsh

The specTre of a hungarian-born octogenarian ominously hovers over the european Union. Doyen of capitalist investors, George soros is on a mission to tear down europe’s defences. his aim is to reap a harvest of 550 million peoples in pursuit of his manic one-world agenda. having graduated from the London school of economics in 1954, soros became consumed with a passion for meddling in international currencies. The serial killer of nations, George soros first came to public notoriety when in september 1992 (Black Wednesday) he withdrew £1 billion from Britain’s financial markets. There was panic among speculators and Britain’s pension funds evaporated. The parasites of Threadneedle street took to their heels with their pinstriped pockets bulging with Britain’s hardearned reserves. The subsequent devaluation of the pound inspired a tsunami-like outflow of an already unstable currency. such personal financial success triggered the enigmatic soros to further acts of economic sabotage. In 1992 it is said the speculator pressured the Italian government to withdraw from the eU’s monetary system and clandestinely to sell him a mindboggling sum of Italian lire. As a consequence rome lost $48 billion. Italian political commentator, Mario sommossa; “George soros has a long record of manip-
ulating national currencies.” A man one bun short of a picnic should not ordinarily be a problem. If soros was a penniless person street-trolling with a placard he would be a figure of fun. The danger lays in the largesse the currency meddler showers over the european Union’s controlling elite; power corrupts absolutely. The investor’s socalled Open society Foundations finance incoming refugee place-
ments whilst campaigning for liberating drug sales. If successful, europeans, in a drug-induced stupor, will sleep walk into genocide. The eU’s on-going economic crisis provides a lucrative harvest for currency speculators like George soros. In the wake of fiscal upheaval Non-Government Organisations (NGO) proliferates. These are labelled ‘humanitarian activity’ but the Meistersinger of Wall street is hooked on dehumanising the world. hungarian prime Minister Viktor Mihály Orbán: “he (soros) must not be underestimated. he is a powerful billionaire of enormous determination who, when it comes to his interests, respects neither God nor man.” Financial leaders of many countries accuse soros of using his billions and speculative knowhow to downgrade currencies. Malaysian geopolitical analyst Matthew Maavak says soros could have had a hand in the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The aims of soros globalism are in perfect harmony with those of the Bolshevik-inspired comintern (communist International); globalism simply sounds better. Wherever foundations support the current influx of non-europeans you find George soros’s fingerprints. solution: Arrest corrupt politicians and place a warrant on the head of George soros.

Rites of passage by
Barry Duke
In my mid-teens I could barely wait for 1965, the year I’d hit 18 and be allowed to get a gun. This was in apartheid South Africa, where getting one’s first firearm was regarded as a rite of passage – but only if you were white, of course. The local plods issued me with a licence after my dad, an early victim of pester power, reluctantly signed a permission form. So off I went to buy a .22 calibre Italian Bernardelli that I carried in event of attacks by enormous spiders and redneck hippie-haters and homophobes. Within months of my acquiring the thing, it fell from my waistband in a cinema, hitting the floor with a loud thud. I felt around in the dark but couldn’t find it. “Well,” I thought, “once the lights go up I’ll locate it.” no such luck. It had vanished. Then I noticed that, to the left of my seat, was a wide, vertical metal post that would once have supported by a long-gone arm-rest. I had no choice but to tell the fleapit’s owner that I thought my pistol had gone down the tube. As a consequence, the next scheduled screening of How to murder your Wife had to be cancelled as we poked about with a wire coat hanger. An hour later we finally managed to hook it out, along with some vintage popcorn. The furious owner threw me off the premises and warned me never to darken his doorstep again. Months later, the firearm and I permanently parted company when I was on holiday in the coastal city of Durban. I placed it in the drawer of a bedside cabinet in my hotel before turning in, and awoke to discover that both gun and wallet had been nicked by a thief who had entered my room while I was sound asleep. Even more irritating was the fact that the intruder hadn’t bothered to steal the Gideon’s Bible on which they had rested. In my late 50s, I realised I was hurtling towards another rite of passage: the acquisition of a senior citizen’s bus pass. Glumly I wondered how time had contrived to pass so fast. I got the pass just after my 60th, but hardly ever used it as I was always belting around Brighton on a 600 cc Honda Hornet. I sold the bike before I moved to Spain over six years ago, and, rather than buy new wheels, chose instead to make use of the local Benidorm buses. I then discovered that folk over 65 can enjoy great savings by obtaining a tarjeta oro (gold card) from the city hall for a mere €4.00. I am certain that this, or similar schemes must exist in other areas of Spain. Last December, with far less satisfaction my gun licence gave me, I took possession of my shiny new gold card, put €20.00 worth of credit on it, then let loose a howl of rage when it died on the third day. I returned to the town hall to tell a clerk that it had simply stopped functioning, and was told to apply for a new one. Because bus fares here are so cheap I simply can’t be asked to go through the whole process again. But, hey, the thing is pretty good at removing the silver gunk from lottery scratch cards, and – who knows? – before my final rite of passage to total oblivion I might win back the €24.00 it cost me.

The way I see it... by
Harvey Mann
There has been a lot of procrastination with regard to the question ‘should Donald Trump be allowed a state visit to Britain?’ This would mean he would be wined and dined by the Queen and carriage ride through London, the highest accolade a visiting head of state could have. Jeremy Corbyn and most of the Labour Party don’t want the visit to happen, especially after Trumps recent tweets ridiculing London Mayor sadiq Khan over the last terrorist attack in London, although the Conservatives would be quite happy as future trade relations with the Us are now more important than ever. however Trumps spokesman is now saying Donald Trump will not be visiting Britain as yet, as this visit may cause demonstrations by the British public. Now I can disclose that Donald Trump did make a private visit to London to have lunch with me, yes Me. he was following instructions from his first wife Ivana who I had befriended while working in New York, however his visit was sometime before he had developed his Presidential aspirations. The restaurant we met at was called scribes below the offices of the Daily Mail and Mail on sunday of which I was associate editor in Derry street Kensington, London. some years earlier while working in New York for the Daily Mail, I met Ivana Trump, we became good friends after I had arranged special passes for her to attend royal ascot in Britain, and then put her picture on the cover of You Magazine in her ascot sunday best. Ivana in those days was the Queen of New York, she arranged all the parties, receptions and balls, just about everything that happened in the Big apple was organised by her and her private secretary. her private secretary had telephoned me “Donald Trump is in Paris, Ivana told him to hop over to London in his private jet and take you out to lunch” she said. Donald and Ivana had divorced on reasonably good terms, he had bestowed millions of dollars on her, they had a young daughter Ivanka, that Donald adored, Ivanka was a beautiful little girl who would kiss me on the cheek whenever I arrived at the Plaza hotel in New York that Donald owned and Ivana managed.” There will be four of you for lunch, Donald, his girlfriend Marla Marple’s and her mother Laura ann”, Marla was a former beauty queen and actress, she later married Donald but they divorced after 6 years. The lunch was unremarkable, a lot of chatter about New York and what they thought of London. Then Donald launched into his business mode, my concentration wavered as he spoke in self-glorification, I looked at the threesome across the table and what was at first remarkable was the typical large american style back combed hairstyles of Marla’s mother Laura, and Marla Marple’s, however Donald Trumps appeared even bigger, it looked as if a large piece of sage brushwood had blown in from a Windy City, maybe Kansas, and attached its self to Donald's head, the monstrosity appeared to have been back combed, up combed, down

combed and lacquered to within an inch of its life, a hair dressers nightmare, this is the first time I had seen it so close, three feet from me, frightening! The conversation, as I said was quite informal however I played close attention to Donald's attitude and body language, his manner was to change every few minutes, his sentences were not eloquent, he sometimes looked as if he was gloating when speaking about himself, other times he looked impertinent, sometimes threatening, other times pressurising, he often pursed his lips like a petulant child, and occasionally he would place the tip of his thumb against the tip of his index finger making a figure O to press home a point. Now this was just supposed to be a friendly getting to know you lunch, however Donald’s big business acumen of hotels and casinos was pushed down my throat, he is a business billionaire I grant him that, but without any underlying charm or wanting to ingratiate himself with you. When the lunch was over, Donald, Marla and her mother piled into their chauffeured rolls royce, I was sagging at the knees, wiped out, as if a steam roller had run me over. Donald Trump had come across like a bully trying to inflict his mantra and his brilliance on me. Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me, that's the very funny line stuttered by Kenneth Williams in the film Carry on Cleo as he is stabbed to death In the roman senate, these days it could be a line from the pursed lips uttered by Donald Trump about the attempt in the senate to distable his Presidency. Donald's opponents and all but a few of his supporters, have been ganging up, his tweets are mostly nonsense his speeches are rubbish, there is a growing feeling with the american Trump voters that

Donald is going to sell them short as his policies, are leaking water. at this moment Donald is fighting on all fronts, after sacking his own appointed FBI Boss James Comey the 6ft 7inch giant Comey sat in front of the intelligence Committee of the house of represetatives judicial committee and told them what was said during his private meetings in the Oval Office with Trump. “Drop the investigations into the russian involvement” said Trump meaning the Presidential election, and then demanded a pledge of loyalty according to Comey’s evidence, then instructed Comey not to inquire into other accusations being levelled at Trump. The eX FBI boss believes that the three private meeting held in the Oval Office were taped by Trump and the committee is trying to get the tapes if they exist to verify Comy’s allegations. however Trump is becoming more beleaguered, as more Democrats and republicans, are angry at Trumps disrespectful attitude and unwillingness to comply with the Members of the senate some accuse him of being more Like Vladimir Putin, than Putin. Now congressmen from both the republicans and Democrats are thought to be sharpening their knives, as the senate demands the handing over the tapes if they exist as suggested by Trump to Comey, If there are tapes of the Trump, Comey discussions that took place in the Oval Office the senate committee want them, and pretty darn quick. Infamy, infamy they all have it in for him! I think if Trump survives this attempt by the senate in the cloak of Brutus to stab him in the back, will it be hail Trump or alas Trump.

THE BEACH BOYS are set to headline Fuengirola’s tenth annual Pop Weekend from 22 to 25 June.
Fifteen bands inlcuding La Casa Azul and Paul Collins will fill three locations around the town with some of the best pop music, at Sohail Castle, PogsIrish Bar and Hotel Las Palmeras. Councillor for Culture, Rodrigo Romero, explained, “the weekend of June 24 and 25 is going to be a brilliant, not only because theNocheen Blanco de San Juan takes place the day before across the town’s bars but also because on Saturday the 24th we are hosting legendary band The Beach Boys, who have been playing all over the world for over 50 years, have featured in many films and soundtracks and have produced some very impressive music.” He continued, “their 1966 Pet Sounds record, which is the main focus of their tour this year, was the best record of that year and John Lennon himself called it a

true masterpiece in a letter he sent Brian Wilson. It is an absolute work of art and the songs are aninsightintothe generation. The music of the Beach Boys is the music of California and surfing ... it’s the optimistic voice of the 60’s and above all, their vocal ensembles and what they managed to do with their voices, is something that has not yet been equalled.” He added, “after The Beach Boys’ performance, the festival continues on Sunday with a weekend of pop rock, indie, retro and fresh sounds with performancesfrom more groups, including Spanish band La Casa Azul, which is very popular and serves up a unique style of music,” explaining, “if the Fuengirola Pop Weekend is famous for anything it is that it brings together different types of bands who perform great set lists.” On Thursday 22 inPogs Irish Bar local band, The Silver Beats, will perform a tribute The Beatles and then on Friday five bands will perform in the same bar. While on Saturday 24 the festival will continue in Pogs from 4pm hours with three groups, ending with Paul Collins, a familiar name on the Fuengirola music scene. The highlight of the event comes on 24 June with a concert by The Beach Boys at Sohail Castle, while the venue will host four further bands the next day from 9pm, ending with an all-night DJ session at Las Palmeras hotel.

Basic forms of sentence building Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
Many people who study Spanish get upset by those terrible things called verbs. They quickly discover that they are rather complicated, and they often find themselves sinking into a mire of grammatical terms that they don’t really understand. It is certainly true that verbs are more complicated in Spanish than in english, but they are understandable if we take them step by step. The first step is to be absolutely certain that we know what a verb is. Many of us have learnt quite correctly that they are “doing” words, such as “to run”, “to jump”, “to play” and so on. They can also include words that do not exactly express an action, but rather a kind of state, such as “to own”, “to have”, “to believe”, “to intend”. This form of the verb which in english usually starts with the word “to” is called the “infinitive”. It is the basic form of the verb before any changes are made to it. The reason why it is so important to learn verbs is because they are what make sense of a sentence. If I say something like “The boy the ball” I don’t make any sense. If I say “the boy hits, (or throws, or steals, or loses, or likes) the ball”, then I have made a meaningful sentence. “To hit”, “to throw”, “to steal”, “to lose” and “to like” are all verbs. now we are going to learn six verbs in Spanish to get us started. you will notice that all of them end in either “–ar”, “-er”, or “–ir.” all Spanish verbs have one of these three endings when they are in their “infinitive” form; that is the equivalent of the “to ...” form in english.
change in meaning, generally connected to “when” an action occurs and “who” is producing the action of the verb. However, not everyone learns early on that there is a great deal that can be done with verbs in their “infinitive” form. We can make simple sentences with them without any changes being made at all. In order to do this we are now going to learn three more words (they are also verbs but that doesn’t matter for now) which can combine with our infinitive verbs to make simple sentences. I call them “first person” words because they are words about “I”, and “I” in grammar is called the “first person”:
CAMBIAR (to change) BEBER (to drink) VIVIR (to live)
even at this stage you may well be able to add other words you already know to make the sentences more meaningful. For example:
HABLAR (to speak) VOLVER (to return) DORMIR (to sleep)
you may have learnt in your Spanish classes, or noticed for yourself, that the endings of Spanish verbs often alter. When this happens it is to produce a
QUIERO (I want) NECESITO (I need) PUEDO (I can) There is a separate word for “I” in Spanish which is “yo”, but when we are forming sentences we usually miss the word “yo” out, so that the one word “quiero” means “I want” and so on. We now already know enough to link these two words, that is, the “first person” word and the “infinitive” of the verb to make instant “minisentences”. For example: QUIERO VOLVER (I want to return) NECESITO DORMIR (I need to sleep) PUEDO HABLAR (I can speak) QUIERO VIVIR (I want to live) NECESITO BEBER (I need to drink) PUEDO CAMBIAR (I want to change)
NECESITO BEBER AGUA (I need to drink water) QUIERO DORMIR MUCHO (I want to sleep a lot) PUEDO CAMBIAR DINERO (I can change money).
If you try out some different combinations just with these words, you will already be well on the way to being able to form some very useful basic sentences. If you learn some more “infinitive” verbs, you can expand your range of possibilities even further. Here are six more to learn: TRABAJAR (to work) BAILAR (to dance) COMER (to eat)
Something else we should know about these infinitive verbs is that when they are pronounced, the “emphasis” or “beat” of the word falls onto the ending “ar”, “er”, “ir” which are shorter sounds than most english people assume. Remember as well that the “j” of trabajar has a throaty “h” sound, the second “c” in “cocinar” has a “th” sound and the “ai” of “bailar” is pronounced like the english word “I” or “eye”. These sounds are all dictated by specific rules of pronunciation which are rather difficult to explain in more detail in written form. now let’s see if you can create some more “minisentences” in Spanish. Here are some in english for you to think about. I want to work. I need to cook. I can dance. I need to learn Spanish. I want to eat more. I can open the door. I think it would be rather good for you to work these out for yourselves before next week, and also make up some more small sentences using the principles we have learnt. Remember that we are only talking in the first person “I” form at the moment. another thing you might have noticed is that in most cases the Spanish use fewer words to express the same idea, which is amazing when you think how much they like to speak!

The Midnight Bell
by Jack Higgins Sean Dillon returns for his twenty-second adventure in Jack Higgins’ The Midnight Bell, and he’s taking on the new leader of a well-known terrorist group. He calls himself the Master, but beyond that, not much is known about the new leader of al-Qaeda. He filled a position that was made available when former IRA assassin Sean Dillon killed the previous leader–and the one before him. This time, the new Master has a plan in place to make sure he doesn’t fall victim to a similar fate as his predecessors–kill Dillon before he can mount an offense. To kick off the well-plotted game of cat and mouse, the Master contacts Dillon to tease just how much al-Qaeda knows about him, other government officials, and their operations. The news is unsettling and leaves Dillon and company scrambling to find out more about the mysterious new leader of the Middle east’s second most dangerous terrorist group. That response, though, was just what the Master wanted, and he prepared for it in advance by setting a number of traps in place to catch Dillon and American intelligence agents offbalance. The plan works initially, but eventually Dillon realizes the game is afoot and makes a few daring plays himself. Dillon and his team eventually connect the death of an aging White House secretary, who is actually far more important than the vanilla title reveals, with events from around the world. That revelation is met with a new discovery that has Dillon racing against the clock to prevent a larger attack. also returning alongside Dillon are several characters from past books, including his niece, Hannah–who at only nineteen is surprisingly proficient with a number of firearms. Here’s the problem–well, several of them… even if readers are able to get past the unlikely, head-scratching scenario where a terrorist leader calls up the person he’s targeting to show off and brag about how much they know about him…and the gun-toting teenager who isn’t at all phased by violence…there’s still the info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084
issue of unbelievable dialogue. Higgins is a legend and has had a long and storied career, but, with all due respect to him, his latest offering is a mess. Some of the dialogue is downright cringe-worthy, and most of the new characters read like hollow, mannequin-like fill-ins who add nothing to the plot. It’s disappointing, really. To top it all off, the narrative bounces around randomly, making trying to follow the story a choppy, confusing experience. While longtime fans of this series will take solace in the fact that Sean Dillon is still very much the lethal, cocky operative they’ve come to love, there’s far more bad than good here. newcomers and casual thriller fans will struggle to get through The Midnight Bell‘s many downfalls, and those who do push through are rewarded with a lackluster, underwhelming ending to this mediocre plot.

Kenny, who was your most famous client? Bruno w. well, Bruno, I try and keep my client list confidential and all my clients have therefore the entitlement to have such anonymity. I have had several clients from European Royal Families and stars of Stage and Screen too. Government Ministers and Clergy and famous people from all walks of life. I do get asked this question a lot in radio and TV, interviews too..... and I think that it is a way that some people judge my abilities. As a true professional I treat all clients with the same dignity that they deserve! No comment!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Financially it is time to take that gamble this week! Lay any groundwork that brings you stability, and allows you to get to where you need to be on an economical level by daring to boost your income!
As Mars trines Neptune there comes a distinctly psychic side to your actions since someone is in danger and you will be the person to warn them this week! Your strong perceptive energies see you quick off the mark to restore balance and equilibrium back, even though this involves outmanoeuvering those who are interfering with the truth.
That rather wonderful maverick energy is all around you right now. You have to admit that you do your very best work under pressure, and you love to get it right before you put your name to it. Mercury is in Gemini at the start of the week and it is a great time for financial or business ventures. Venus tops your solar chart too... so romance takes a step up.
Venus focusses on two actions this week as both Pluto and Saturn trine with the Goddess of Love in turn. Pluto emphasises on the depth of family love and tender care, whilst Saturn goes all out for business. Saturn rules Aquarius whilst Venus rules Libra; where Saturn is exalted. This week is all about justice and fairplay amidst loyalty!
A good time to set your sights on long term goals or your career as there is a lot of activity right now and there comes a time to get things moving on anything that involves self learning and education. The New Moon on the 23rd will boost anything that you have started, but may not have finished, and there are some inspiring results to be found!
The Mercury square on Jupiter heralds that your ideas may be rather wonderful, but that you also have to be practical to be of any use right now. However well intentioned you may be, common sense will have to prevail, and be careful who you trust right now. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person would not be the way ahead!
Be careful what you say right now, you may live to regret to saying yes when no has to be the right answer. This time is the right time to take things further, however, and be very unafraid to ask for the support you may need to back you to the hilt! Have the courage of your conviction, believe more in yourself, go for gold, it’s what you want and deserve!
Focus on clearing out some of the clutter of your life in a significant way. Your mind may be saying yes to things that your heart has yet to process. For you the New Moon on the 23rd brings a new balance to work, rest and play and this is welcome as a significant improvement to your lifestyle. Make peace with yourself and lighten up! Now!
Mercury’s entry into your sign has speeded things up when it is possible you wanted to slow down. No worries! What affects you and the people immediately around you is what matters most right now. Have less global awareness and concentrate your energies on your inner emotions which are guiding you on nicely, and certainly in the right direction.
Trial and error comes along right now! You are beginning to attract the right people into your life at last. Taking charge of a project will bring you rewards when you least expect them, and you are more interested in developing your talents rather than being productive. Don’t be in a hurry, but leave any major decision until after the New Moon
A Venus and Mars aspect brings you to an increased motivation to restore and nurture whilst being both safe and sound. While Jupiter directs this month, your trusty leader, Neptune retrogrades; so you will see yourself winding up to slow down; but you have to! Make a dream plan more do-able, but do, do it! Improvement comes, but through toil!
Whilst the Sun and Mercury converge this week it will greatly influence your own personal energies. You are waiting for answers but also with these comes the opportunity to take on a deeper more fulfilling relationship or venture. It’s not selfish to want the best, for you and those whom you love, above all you deserve it now, more than ever.
Things are changing around you, and you would do best to tune into the feelings of others before they feel that they have to pressure you in any way. Someone is afraid that they have been misunderstood and once this is settled once and for all it leaves you stepping up to a very busy time of your life. Ceres opposes Saturn and sextiles with Kora!

More evidence linking stress to obesity Using hair to measure long-term levels of the stress hormone cortisol, UK researchers have confirmed the link between chronic stress and packing on pounds, as well as difficulty shedding excess weight. ‘When people are facing a stressful situation, a chain reaction is set off in the body that results in the release of cortisol, leading to higher levels of this hormone in the body,’ said lead study author Sarah Jackson of University College London in a statement to Reuters Health. ‘Cortisol is involved in a broad range of biological processes, including metabolism, body composition and the accumulation of body fat,’ Jackson said. ‘When we’re stressed out we may also find it more difficult to find the motivation to go for a run or resist unhealthy foods.’ Stress sets off alarms in the brain that trigger the nervous system to release hormones to sharpen the senses, tense the muscles, speed up the pulse and deepen breathing. Commonly called a flight or flight response, this biological reaction helps us defend ourselves in threatening situations. Isolated or temporary stressful situations may not be harmful, but routine exposure to stress can lead to immune system problems, heart disease, nervous system complications and mental health disorders in addition to obesity. For the study researchers examined data collected from men and women aged 54 and older taking part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants underwent tests every two years starting in 2002, and during the sixth wave of the study they provided a hair clipping. The study team tested cortisol levels that accumulated in the hair over time in 2,527 men and women and found that participants with more cortisol in their hair were also more likely to be obese or have lots of excess fat around their midsection. Participants who were classified as obese based on their BMI or waist circumference had particularly high levels of hair cortisol, the study found. The findings add to growing evidence linking stress to obesity, said Dr. Susan Fried, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Cortisol is released in response to many stresses. Chronically high cortisol is thought to promote fat accumulation around the waist and increase the ability of fat cells to store fat. The findings suggest that people may need to take a holistic approach to weight loss that goes beyond diet and exercise to consider factors like stress, said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Connecticut. ‘You might think you need to improve your diet, or exercise more, and that’s true,’ Katz told Reuters Health. ‘But for you, the first priority might be to manage stress better so you are more capable of doing those things, and reduce a hormonal barrier to weight control into the bargain.’

Smooth for the summer now the real heat of summer has stealthily crept up on us, the big summer decision also arrives ….. do we shave our body for the hot weather, or not? From an athletic point of view, if you swim, run or bike there are actual performance benefits that come with playing it smooth. however, most guys who choose to shave their body, particularly in spain, do it for more prosaic and narcissistic reasons. visit any beach, swimming
pool or gym at this time of year and you will be surrounded by acres of smoothly shaved male flesh. spanish guys feel far more comfortable without body hair that clogs with sweat during the humid summer conditions and also think smooth skin shows off muscle definition in a much better fashion. so, if you're planning on doing it, here are a few tips on how you should go about it: First block out some time and be prepared to go slow, real slow, as shaving down your
entire body takes time and you certainly wouldn’t want to nick or cut a ‘vital organ’. Grab an electric trimmer and trim your entire body down to stubble, including your back, then, grab shaving cream and a razor with a fresh blade. shave against the direction of the hair growth and when time is tight, sometimes it’s easier to take a body part at a time while in the shower. one day shave your chest, the next your legs ensuring that afterwards you rinse with cool water to close the pores.
Beauty tips CheCk out our five top tips to ensure your at home manicure/ pedicure stays in tip-top condition: PreP your nails Remember that any bumps, ridges, or imperfections on your nails can cause your nail polish to chip, so take the time to remove any old nail polish and make sure you shape, file and buff your nails so you’re starting with a smooth base. aPPly a base coat Applying a base coat is one of the most important steps in getting fabulous, chip-proof nails. Not only does it prevent polish from staining your nails, but it also adheres to your nails better than regular polish, which helps extend the length of your manicure/ pedicure. allow nails to dry Ideally, you should let your nails dry for at least 2 minutes in between each coat of polish and if you’re wearing a darker shade, you should wait at least 3 minutes as darker polishes typically take longer to dry. aPPly a chiP resistant toP coat Finding a good chip-resistant top coat will be a game-changer in extending the life of your athome manicures/ pedicures. aPPly a toP coat every day If you REALLY want to extend the life of a polish, you can apply a top coat every single day.

The superpowers of sage
Ask the Optician Glaucoma
Amrik Sappal, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola answers your questions about glaucoma.
Q: What is glaucoma? A: Glaucoma is a build-up of fluid on the eye which increases pressure and in turn damages the optical nerve. If left untreated it can lead to permanent tunnel vision and blindness. Often there are no symptoms at all in the first stages, and vision loss usually occurs gradually with symptoms only becoming noticeable when severe damage has been done. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this vision loss, so it’s extremely important to have regular eye tests to diagnose the disease as early as possible. SAGe CAn be found in a variety of forms - as a tea, as a supplement in capsules, or refined as a tincture or essential oil. Sage has been used throughout history as an anti-aging herb and its use can be dated as far back as ancient China. The herb is high in antioxidants, it has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties and it functions to increase appetite and as a diuretic and a stimulant. Increases respIratory health If you are experiencing a mild asthma attack or shortness of breath, a few drops of sage essential oil in a pot of hot water can be used as a vapor to inhale through your respiratory passages, opening your sinuses and improving your air flow.
Improves focus and memory Many times, modern science proves that ancient herbalists may have gotten a few things wrong here and there. That is not the case when it comes to sage, which has been used for centuries to help people improve their mental focus and cognitive functions. Sage is even being studied to help combat dementia and Alzheimer’s. helps combat dIabetes A 2006 study in Portugal showed that sage oil is effective in lowering the blood glucose levels of diabetic mice. In fact, Sage is actually said to mimic many of the common pharmaceutical drugs that are meant to combat diabetes. Sage helps to control the release of glucose into the bloodstream, therefore stabilizing the blood glucose levels and limiting major fluctuations in blood sugar levels. aIds IndIgestIon When taken as an herbal tea, sage can help with all kinds of stomach problems, from gas and bloating to indigestion and heartburn. This is due to sage’s anti-inflammatory properties and a cup of sage tea goes straight to the stomach. Working its way through, sage helps your whole digestive
system fight inflammation. Sage tea can even help reduce diarrhoea. relaxes muscles Sage is an anti-inflammatory agent that can soothe cramps and relieve tension. Sage has also been used to treat menstrual cramps due to its antispasmodic effects that soothe tense muscles. treats skIn condItIons Sage used in tincture form treats many common skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema and even acne. You can use tinctures, dilute sage in a carrier oil and massage it into trouble areas, or you can make or purchase a sage salve to treat unsightly blemishes. strengthens bones Sage is also a great source of vitamin K, which is not found in many common foods but is essential in maintaining bone strength and building bone density. Don’t wait until it’s too late and osteoporosis has already set in - drink at least one cup of sage tea per day and add sage to your culinary regimen. Just one serving of sage tea gives you nearly 30 percent of the vitamin K that your body needs per day.
Q: Who is at risk of developing it? A: The highest risk group are those over the age of sixty; however babies and young adults can also suffer from the disease. People of African origin are more at risk of glaucoma at a younger age. Other high risk groups include anyone with family history of glaucoma, people who are severely short sighted and diabetics. Q: How is glaucoma diagnosed? A: Although it can be difficult for the patient to identify the signs of glaucoma, an in-depth eye test with visual health check is all that is required to catch the condition early. Prevention is the best cure for glaucoma and the sooner the disease is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated without any loss of vision. Specsavers Opticas is located in Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. To find your nearest store and book an eye test visit www.specsavers.es.

Sexed-up veg on the menu Which would you be more likely to eat – roasted carrots, or caramelised carrots roasted in honey and wealth? It’s often said that sex sells everything and that theory has now been extended to the world of food. According to new research, a significant number of people would be keener on eating a vegetable dish with a sexed up name versus boring old descriptions of veg. A study conducted by researchers at Stanford University claims that the trick to getting people to eat more healthily is to give vegetables ‘seductive names’. Think ‘sizzlin’ green beans’ instead of ‘green beans’ or ‘crispy shallots’ instead of ‘onions’, or ‘glazed asparagus’ instead of plain old asparagus spears. The research found that people consumed more vegetables when they were labelled with sexed up descriptions, which the researchers now suggest could be the key to getting everyone eating more healthily. Interestingly, it’s sexy, rather than healthysounding names that work best. When restrictive words were used, like ‘sugarfree’, people were less likely to eat vegetables cooked in the exact same way. So ‘green beans glazed in a lemon dressing’ is more appealing than ‘green beans with a sugar-free lemon dressing. The lead author of the study, Bradley Turnwald,
reckons this is down to emphasising that healthy foods can be delicious, rather than focusing only on their healthy virtues. Think about it – wouldn’t you be more tempted to eat vegetables if you were told ‘these taste delicious’ rather than ‘these are really, really good for you’? The study was conducted in a university canteen which served around 607 students per weekday lunch. Each day, one featured vegetable was randomly labelled in one of four ways: basic, healthy restrictive (such as sugar-free), healthy positive, and indulgent (or ~sexy~). No changes were made to how the vegetables were prepared or served, just how they were labelled. Each day the researchers recorded the number of students selecting the vegetable dishes and weighed the mass of the vegetables taken from the serving bowl. Labelling veg with the indulgent/sexy name resulted in 25% more people choosing it than they did when it was labelled with the plain, basic term, and 41% more likely than people who were offered the healthy restrictive condition. Labelling vegetables sexily also resulted in a 23% increase in the actual mass of vegetables consumed versus the basic label, which means that sexy names not only make people more likely to choose vegetables, but also make people eat more of the sexy veg.

Cars that give school ‘cred’ Motoring experts have revealed a list of the top five cars guaranteed to boost the ‘school gate credibility’ of UK dads following a poll amongst its team of motoring editors. It’s not just the music being played on the CD as you automatically reverse into a space at the school gates that, according to the advert, gets you noticed. James Dower, senior Black Book editor at hpi, said: “We thought it would be fun to look at some of the makes and models of cars that can give the ultimate feeling of school gate cred. Our team of editors considered everything from top of the range supercars to one-off fantasy cars as seen in the movies such as the classic DeLorean from Back to the Future or Vin Diesel’s 1968 Dodge Charger featured in the latest Fast and the Furious movie. They eventually decided to keep it real by settling for more realistic vehicles that would really appeal to dads.” The Top 5 list of cars offering the greatest school gate cred is as follows: 1) Jaguar F-Pace 2) Range Rover Evoque 3) VW Tiguan 4) Audi TT 5) BMW X1 Added James: “The Jaguar F-Pace just edged it in our poll ahead of the Evoque and the Tiguan. With its iconic Jaguar heritage in a popular SUV bodystyle, the F-Pace is sporty and compact yet relatively affordable. It’s also perfect for the age range of a dad doing the school run.”
Nephew surprises uncle in emotional unveiling of his restored Vauxhall In 2008 at the age of 58, Geoff Charles’ uncle, Bob Charles, retired through ill health after an accident which started a degenerative back disorder of the spine and left him in constant pain and on lots of medication. Inspired by his uncle’s bravery in the face of his serious spinal condition, in April 2017 Geoff Charles, surprised him by spending two years secretly restoring his beloved Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v back to its former glory, just like an episode of Car SOS. Bob thought the vehicle was mouldering in an Essex garage having left it there 17 years ago when he moved to Ireland. After failing to get it back on the road in April 2015, when they found the Carlton had a badly corroded fuel tank, he conceded the car as a write-off. Under false pretences, Geoff took
his uncle to Charles Hurst Vauxhall showroom at Chimney Corner where he admired the car, not recognising at first that it was his. As Bob looked closer, he realised that it was in fact his Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v! A fine vehicle capable of 145 mph which he had purchased for £28,000 back in 1991 when it was just 2 ½ years old. ‘You’re joking! Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it. I don’t know what to say.’ Bob said, visibly emotional as his friends and family joined him to enjoy the moment. Once the restoration process was complete, Geoff Charles said, ‘The majority of the two years it took to restore was mainly due to sourcing parts. A few times I thought we had come to the end of the road but we persevered. Now, completely fully serviced with new plugs, leads, filters, fluids and new battery, it starts and runs like clockwork. I can’t wait to see his face!’ Geoff talks emotionally about his uncle; ‘Talking with Bob over the phone you would never know he has these conditions as he is always cheerful, positive and upbeat in his demeanour. And even though he finds general mobility difficult, his passion for his cars remains.’ ‘He has done so much for me over the years, helping me with the family business, Bower Retirement and also being a father figure and mentor to me. I wanted to repay him by restoring his cherished Carlton and give him the surprise of having it back to its former glory for him to drive.’

The gift of Senna Lewis HamiLton says being presented with one of ayrton senna's helmets for equalling the Brazilian's pole record means more to him than any trophy. Senna'S family sent a helmet used by the three-time champion in 1987 to give to Hamilton when he earned a 65th pole, which he did in Canada on Saturday. "it is the most special thing i have, beyond all trophies," said Hamilton to the press. "as i kid i thought maybe one day i can get to formula 1 and emulate ayrton. To equal him; i just can't believe it." Hamilton has long since surpassed Senna's record of 41 wins - he did so at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix - and now has 55. in both poles and wins, he now lags behind only seven-time champion michael Schumacher, who claimed 68 poles and 91 victories. asked whether surpassing Senna's marks meant more than Schumacher's, Hamilton said: "i haven't got to the 68 of michael so i can't really say. i can't look that far ahead at the moment. "ayrton was the guy i noticed from the beginning. i think it was the colour of the helmet. So i am honoured to be honoured by that family. "To think that i am that close to michael's record is incredible - i plan on getting there but that is all ifs and buts." Hamilton, who repeatedly looked
at Senna's helmet as he sat in the postqualifying news conference, said the achievement was even more special given it happened at one of his favourite races where he claimed his first pole and win back in his debut season of 2007. "i knew 65 was there and waiting; i knew montreal has been a beautiful place for me," he said. "i thought if i was going to get that special pole anywhere, it was going to be here. "But you can only hope it is going to go well, and often it doesn't. "The lap started perfectly, very smooth, no mistakes, built it up and then the last corner which has always been a strength of mine." He added: "i am honoured to be among those great drivers, the legends. Ultimately just very proud. "it wouldn't be possible without all the work from my family. "This is just the tip of the iceberg. no-one knows how hard we worked to get here. i am proud to have got the Hamilton name here. if this was my last day in the sport, the Hamilton name will remain there forever." The helmet Hamilton was given is a replica, for travel and insurance reasons, but he will be receiving a genuine helmet that Senna used at a later date.
You scored too many goals‌ You’re fired!! The coach of a Spanish youth team has been sacked after a 25-0 win - because the club's management decided the margin of victory went against the spirit of the game. after defeating fellow Valencia side Benicalap c on 3 June, Serranos B's under-11 manager was removed from his position. "We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. after the result, we decided that the manager should leave," Pablo alcaide, who helps run the side, told el Pais. however, the Spanish newspaper also published comments from the manager's lawyer, who insisted his client had not pushed players to score as many as they could. The manager instead instructed his side "to pressure only in their own half" in the eight-a-side game, but Benicalap c "continued to attack and left spaces in behind", the lawyer said. The game was Benicalap C's final match of the season. They finished bottom of the league with zero points and 247 goals conceded from their 30 matches. el Pais reports that such one-sided scores are not infrequent in Spanish youth football, but many clubs stop counting once they have scored more than 10 goals. The english Fa's latest guidance to youth coaches, published in 2012, is designed to "challenge the win-at-all-costs mentality that is stifling development and enjoyment for young people"
