Beaming with pride! Costa del Sol wins LGBT diversity award.
by Jimmy Grayling THE Costa del Sol continues to lead the way in fighting social and sexual inequality after Malaga Provincial Council bagged an Andalucian Diversity Award from the regional Federation of LGBT Associations. The authority has been recognised for its work to promote the values of respect for social integration, sexual and gender diversity. It comes as municipalities across the region raised the rainbow flag to celebrate World LGBTIQ Pride Day on Wednesday. Ronda, Alhaurin de la Torre, Fuengirola, Mijas, Torrox, and Mijas councils all offered their support, in addition to longterm sympathisers Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Marbella and Malaga Capital.
The annual international event commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village, New York, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community widely seen as the birth of the LGBT liberation movement. Benalmadena youth councillor Ana Scherman delivered a rallying call as she said: “We consider it essential to carry out this kind of global and local call, to protest and support all those throughout the world who continue to be persecuted, imprisoned, beaten, and even murdered because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.” The town has painted a number of zebra crossings in rainbow colours to mark the occasion, but Fuengirola council went one step further and decorated the steps at the town hall entrance. Mayor Ana Mula gave a stirring speech in which she read out a motion declaring her administration’s commitment to
a prejudice-free society which had previously been approved unanimously by councillors. The rainbow flag will flutter outside both Marbella City Hall and the mayor’s office until next Monday, with an exciting programme of events planned for the summer under the hashtag #Marbelladiversa. A permanent flag on El Faro beach is also to be replaced by a larger version with a commemorative plaque installed on the flagpole. It comes as Madrid is currently the gay capital of the world having been chosen to host this year’s WorldPride festivities which run from June 24-July 2. For the first time ever the event, which has seen tens of thousands of revellers descend on the city, is being held in tandem with EuroPride as millions worldwide celebrate LGBTIQ month.

Mr Bernal expressed, “the council’s commitment to bring stability to the municipal cleaners union,” adding “this demonstrates the firm commitment of the council to cleaners, who mainly carry out their work in municipal officers and schools in the town, to fulfil their duties with the highest guarantees, social benefits and support.” He said he hoped “they would therefore be able to carry out their work of keeping our public buildings and schools in perfect condition with these greater guarantees.”

Sexual diversity taught THE COSTA DEL SOL has gained its first campaign promoting sexual diversity after two bus stops in Rincon de la Victoria have featured posters with a photo of a baby and the phrase, “my daughter, my son, maybe she’s a lesbian… maybe he’s gay…maybe transsexual…or even straight.” The campaign, which is the first of its kind in the province, aims to promote sexual diversity and tolerance, and was launched by the town’s council, alongside the Andalucian Rainbow Federation and the Family Diversity Association for Parents with LGTBI Children. Starting out in Gaudix, Granada, the campaign aims to “ensure the fulfilment of emerging human rights, including sexual and reproductive rights.” Yolanda Florido, Councillor for Social Welfare, explained it hoped to normalise the “diversity, orientations and identities within families.” The campaign started out at the end of May with four posters, but two have since been withdrawn “to promote upcoming events.”

Raising the flag by Sally Underwood RAINBOW flags are waving over the town halls of Marbella and San Pedro Alcantara, celebrating International LGTBI Pride Day. Councillor for Equality, Ana Leschiera, commented, "the council is constantly working toward improving diversity with a specific team who aim to bring visibility to the LGTBI cause and fight against bullying and hate crimes stemming from homophobia.” She added the council’s Department of Diversity would be displaying the flag until Monday and had put on a full programme of events throughout June, including distributing fans bearing the hashtag #MarbellaDiversa, an initiative that will continue throughout the summer and take place in Seville and Madrid’s Pride Days. The council also plan to replace the rainbow flag that has flown on Playa El Faro for a year with a larger one. In addition, the mast will be renewed and a plaque will be installed in recognition of the people who have been persecuted by LGTbophobia. Another activity in the diversity program was the workshop "Chemsex: information and risks" carried out at the Cultural Center Cortijo Miraflores by sexologist and psychotherapist Vicent Bataller, followed by a reading of the Day Of the Pride LGTBI 2017 manifesto by Councillor Ana Leschiera. €200 million industry in jeopardy by Sally Underwood IT IS feared the Costa del Sol’s farmers could lose millions of euros in revenue after water cuts in Axarquia following droughts have damaged mango production. According to media reports, producers are expecting further irrigation restrictions at the end of August, in addition to the current ban on watering one day a week. Reportedly these cutbacks, coupled with current high temperatures, are already damaging crops, risking economic losses to the multi-million-euro sector. BusinessmanMiguel Garcia, claimed, “we face a catastrophic year if the weather situation does not change. This summer will bringserious consequences unless the current situation is drastically alleviated.” The President of Asaja, BaldomeroBellido, echoed his concerns, saying, “This is a very worrying situation. The water available is being depleted at the rate of one cubic hectometre per month in the eastern zone. Urgent measures are needed because subtropical fruit is undoubtedly one of the economic pillars of the agricultural sphere.” Since April, Axarquia’s farmers have
been banned from watering plants one day a week due to low water levels in the La Viñuela reservoir, a first since its opening in 1986. The Water Board is now considering investing hundreds of millions of euros to help Malaga’s towns with their ongoing drought problems. Officials are looking at various solutions, including diverting water supplies from the Guadal-
horce reservoir or building overflow reservoirs to house excess water for times of low supply.
Alleged arsonist identified AN 11-YEAR-OLD Austrian boy has been identified as an alleged arsonist responsible for starting three blazes in Periana. The child was found after firefighters rushed to put out several hundred metres of flames and caught him hiding behind the rocks, watching the fire. Rafael Torrubia, Periana’s Mayor, said the firemen reported the boy was behaving like a “young pyromaniac.” He went on to explain the child had been living in Alta Axarquia for around a month and had a history of “problematic behaviour,” according to his school, adding, “it seems his parents are separated.” Mr Torrubia praised the quick work of the firefighters for preventing the three fires spreading to houses and the town’s school. Axarquia’s Provincial Firemen Consortium have been busy due to recent hire temperatures, putting out fires in a field and recycling point in Colmenar, as well as a cane fire in Nerja. The Guardia Civil and Local Police are also investigating several fires in trees around the Almijara neighbourhood, which they believe could have been started intentionally.

Mr PerezAtencia, said in Torre del Mar “we have made a great effort over the last two years across 3.2 kilometres of coastline from the Cafe del Mar to Rio Seco to regain our flags, and most importantly, without having to remove the coastal path.” Maria Jose Roberto, explained she was pleased, “Benajarafe’s beaches offer high quality facilities and a great day out for our visitors. Soaked and bedraggled fugitive by John Smith THE National Crime Agency in the UK has reported that a wanted man, Jason Waterman has surrendered to police in Gibraltar after seeing himself on Crimewatch. The 32-year-old known as Jugs or Jumbo presented himself to the Royal Gibraltar Police last night, dripping wet with salt water, carrying a small bag of clothing and refusing to say how he entered the Territory other than it was not through the usual crossing point. It has been assumed therefore that he must have entered the sea in Spain and swam across to Gibraltar, possibly because he had inadequate identification. He was taken into police custody awaiting extradition under a European Arrest Warrant as he is believed to have been involved with the importation of seven kilos of cocaine worth €1.25 million from Holland to an airfield in Yorkshire in 2015.

On your bike! A 46-YEAR-OLD man has been arresting for stealing 10 bikes in Malaga Port. It comes after a police probe was launched following a raft of robberies in the area. Most of the raids had been committed in the commercial area of Muello Uno between February and June this year. According to investigators, most of the thefts had taken place in broad daylight while the area was crowded with tourists. The accused was caught by officers after taking a mountain bike from the port, using his pliers to break the lock. Officials have reviewed a total of ten cases in the area, and suspect they were committed by the same individual.

Fighting with fire by Liam Griffin INFOCA fire fighters worked tirelessly to tackle three forest fires that broke out simultaneously across Malaga province last Sunday. The government fire service has announced that the infernos in Alozaina, Casarabonela and the Sierra de Benahavis were caused by electrical sources. The Benahavis blaze was considered the worst, and burned for over 10 hours before it was brought under control. Emergency services received reports at approximately 12.55pm. A total of 16 fire-fighters, alongside an environmental representative and a helicopter were first to attend the blaze. However due to the presence of high winds the wildfire advanced rapidly and emergency services were unable to approach it. When the other two fires were extinguished, Infoca provided reinforcements to the crew tackling the mountain blaze. A team of 53 forest fire fighters, three fire engines and five helicopters stabilised the fire by 10:30pm. “Three fires were unleashed at the same time, and the last one in Benahavis was larger and subsequently took more time to control,” Mayor of Benahavis Jose Castilla explained. “We were waiting to receive support from the seaplane units, but unfortunately they were already in operation working on the fire in Huelva.” Both Infoca and Benahavis council have confirmed that the wildfire did not affect residents in the area.

Record summer for Spanish hoteliers
Spanish hoteliers are expecting a record number of foreign visitors this summer, hotel confederation Cehat said on Wednesday, in a boost for the economy. Spain registered a record 75.5 million foreign visitors in 2016 as the economy rebounded from years in or near recession and as unrest in northern Africa and the Middle East led visitors to seek out safer travel options. Cehat forecast a rise to 80 million visitors this year. Tourism accounts for around 11 per cent of Spain's economic output and is a major contributor to employment levels. Some 37 million foreign visitors are expected during the high summer season of May through to August, Cehat said, up by 2.5 million from last year. ‘Expectations are up across all areas, in prices, nightly stays and profits,’ general secretary of Cehat Ramon Estalella said during a conference by the confederation in Madrid.

Eye in the sky MARBELLA COUNCIL has purchased two paragliders for €5,367 in a bid to launch an aerial surveillance unit. Javier Porcuna, security councillor, has defended the usefulness of the initiative after coming under fire from Malaga Airport operators AENA last year. The report from AENA warned that due to Malaga having partial jurisdiction over Marbella airspace, the aerial unit would not be able to run. Porcuna stated that the patrol unit could be invaluable in monitoring traffic, illegal constructions and providing surveillance on beaches and tourist areas. His idea is that the unit would operate at certain peak times of the year, maintaining that there are officers in Marbella’s police force who already have the specific training needed to operate the gliders. The proposal provoked criticism from the opposition party last year, as the PP claimed the patrol was nothing more than a “joke in bad taste.”

Children’s author has success with first illustrated book by Michael Cano HAVING spent much of her working life as an illustrator and agent for children’s fiction, Andréa Prior shares her time between homes in England and Marbella. She grew up in Durham and from an early age was involved in a local Safari Park where she was a park ranger in Pet’s Corner looking after a number of exotic and not so exotic young animals goats, llamas, monkeys and pigs. After obtaining a degree in illustration at Leeds University, Andréa followed a career in illustration whilst at the same time becoming an accomplished pianist before moving into children’s fiction and then managing director of a company in the branding and design industry. Whilst relaxing at the her property above Marbella, she had been passing some of her time producing cute cartoon sketches and short rhymes about some of the animals that she had known over the years which she thought would make an ideal book for five to eight year olds for both enjoyment and to help them to learn to read. Husband John encouraged Andréa to do more than think about putting the book together and discussions with UK publishers Troubador resulted in the publication of her first book A Parcel of Pigs and Other Funny ‘Tails’. “My rhymes are written for those parents and children that love reading together,” comments Andréa. “The poems are a perfect way to help children develop their spelling, pronunciation skills and memory recall, whilst at the same time having fun with language by using word patterns and wordplay to help expand their vocabulary.” Whilst she is in the process of working on that ‘second difficult book’, Andréa has been promoting her first book by visiting schools in the UK and Costa del Sol (speaking to more than 2,000 children so far) as well as undertaking a number of highly successful book signings with one of the busiest being at Bookworld Puerto Banus. Joining the parcel of pigs in her book are a mountain of mice, a bumble of bees and a tumble of trees plus many other amusing and sometimes eccentric characters, but the author is determined that children will not only enjoy sharing the book with parents and friends but will also learn from a selection of easy questions at the end of each poem. This is a delightful book written and illustrated by delightful author which is proving popular with children and parents alike. Andrea has her own Facebook page www. facebook.com/andrea.prior. illustratorandwriter.

All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deaf-blind people to lead a full life and communicate. This is part of FOAPS’ 10-year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deaf blind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who, without their help, would be totally isolated. Specsavers’ Retail and Business Development Manager Jose Angel Moral-Tajadura commented: ‘One of our key objectives in Spain has been to collaborate with an organisation such as ONCE, which is so important in helping people with sight loss. I hope that this collaboration
won’t just last for 6 months and that we will collaborate with ONCE and their foundations over the long term.’ He added that his commitment was to beat their €6,000 target and that he would be working closely with all the stores so that in January he can return to ONCE and celebrate the end of a highly successful campaign. ‘Our eye tests are comprehensive and centred around professionalism and clinical care. We offer eye tests of the back of the eye and take digital retinal photography, as well as other tests which can detect signs related to glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other issues. These issues, if not caught early and referred to an ophthalmologist, can cause partial or total sight loss, problems which ONCE understand very well’, he explained. ONCE representative Marcelo Rosado explained the very important work that the FOAPS interpreters undertake. He added that there are 100 interpreters working in Spain, offering a very personalised service depending on the level of visual and hearing loss and the different personal situations of each individual. Rosado said that FOAPS is currently offering interpreter services to 377 people; 260 adults and 117 children – more than 46,000 hours in 2017. ‘As we add more activities there are more needs and so initiatives such as this one from Specsavers Opticas are very important.’ Those who wish to participate in the campaign should visit their nearest Specsavers Opticas store for a comprehensive eye test and donate just €1 between July and December 2017. Specsavers Opticas have eight stores in Spain, on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and in Mallorca. www.specsavers.es

The economy of Gibraltar is healthier than ever according to Government by John Smith CONTINUING his review of Gibraltar, John Smith looks at the economy and the latest budget which has caused argument amongst the political parties there. The position of Gibraltar which is in theory a selfgoverning British Overseas Territory has left it open to accusations of it being a tax haven, a home for ‘dodgy money’ and a smuggler’s paradise. Some years ago, there was more strength in that argument than there is today and rumours abound that the Thatcher government was considering taking over complete control of what was then a colony as the British Government did years later with Turks and Caicos Islands. Assuming this rumour - which comes from a reliable local source – is correct, then subsequent governments woke up to their obligations to protect the reputation of the Rock and took stringent measures to cut down the volume of smuggling of drugs and tobacco through Gibraltar waters and to regularise the handling of overseas funds. Gibraltar now subscribes to a number of international agreements specifically aimed at halting money laundering but equally is adept at offering services which are legal but beneficial to companies and individuals who wish to invest their funds or set up business headquarters. The growth of business in Gibraltar has been phenomenal with the newly built World Trade Center filling all of its offices, off-shore Turf Accountants flocking to the Rock and a plethora of well –educated local accounting and law firms offering their services. This week has seen the announcement of the 2017/2018 budget together with a ‘State of the Nation’ review of the previous year. The Chief Minister, Oxford graduate Fabian Picardo QChas ‘made no bones’about the fact that he and his alliance government have invested a great deal of money into the infra-structure of Gibraltar, improving conditions for the elderly and poorer sections of society whilst increasing income and running the largest budget surplus in Gibraltar’s history. He and his ministers are proud of the fact that all of this has been achieved against a background of uncertainty caused by Brexit and almost constant veiled threats from Spain. His forecast for the next financial year is equally attractive and certain measures are being introduced to make investment in luxury goods, storage of wine and vintage vehicles and even purchase of gold bullion easier. The opposition party however has accused the government of hiding the real financial position by allegedly mortgaging off public housing and taking loans through government owned companies without declaring these monies in the budget. With a small population, which is less than the size of the town of Perth in Scotland, Gibraltar undoubtedly punches above its weight but many of its inhabitants suffer from a small town syndrome where everyone knows everyone else and different factors will squabble with each other.
The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo Photo Credit: RTN
At the moment however, bearing in mind that the British Government is still responsible for the affairs of the Rock and the Gibraltar government does recognise international and European regulations, anyone looking to invest funds or start a business in Gibraltar may consider that their money will be safe. Provided that movement across the border remains fluid and knowing that all of the local Spanish councils want to see people have the continued opportunity to work in Gibraltar, it also seems a reasonable expectation that international business there will continue to grow.

A man with a musical mission to fight cancer by Michael Cano EDWARD WALL from Sheffield was diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago but survived after extensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Once recovered he took early retirement and moved to Manilva where he has lived for the past 10 years but needed a hobby to keep himself occupied and had always enjoyed drawing so decided that he would take that up again. Being also a great fan of rock and pop music he started drawing some of his favourite performers freehand, using a black marker pen and then he had a great idea. What if he could persuade these artists to sign his drawings and then he would donate them to various cancer charities to auction off? The idea Since 2012 when he first drew Bryan Ferry, this has become something that he undertakes with a great deal of planning and precision as he finds details of various artists who are playing in the Costa del Sol and then contacts their management asking if he can meet the bands or singers and get them to sign his artwork. He has been very pleased with the results as a high percentage of those he contacts either agree to meet with him or in the recent case of Foreigner make a donation to Cancer UK. For Edward this is a labour of love which also has a positive result as it raises funds for different charities both in the UK and here in Spain. His preferred charities are Cancer Research UK, Sheffield Branch and Danni Children Cancer Charity in Sotogrande.
Torreguadiaro Beach next Monday with entry just €5 and an additional €10 for a barbeque. Apart from the live music, there will be a charity auction and Edward has donated one of his signed Duran Duran sketches as well as artworks showing all of the artists taking part in the evening. For details of the event and to learn more about Danii and the charity which has raised more than €150,000, visit www.daniicharity.com. Musicians who said yes So far, by visiting different events including those run by Crazy Music Productions at the Puente Romano Tennis Club, Gibraltar Music Festival and Starlite amongst others, he has obtained signatures on his drawings from an impressive list of artists including his first, Brian Ferry, Bananarama, Kid Creole, Ronan Keating Kaiser Chiefs, Travis, Jethro Tull, Suggs, Duran Duran, Sister Sledge, Paul Young and All Saints. Edward is geared up for this year’s concerts so is looking forward to drawing the artists, seeing them perform, meeting them and then helping to raise more funds for his favourite cancer charities.

Danni Children Cancer Charity Danii is a young girl who after recovering from one attack of cancer was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) when she was 18 and she formed her charity to allow her to raise funds for three different Spanish associations connected directly with raising funds to help cancer victims. Her latest event is a fundraiser at Chambao Beach Bar on

Imagine a truly free press by
Michael Walsh
keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com
The freedom of the press mantra is fake news as news media is rigidly controlled. Things actually got worse since former New York Tribune editor John Swinton, addressing a Press Association convention in 1893, said; “There is no such thing as an independent Press. If you express an honest opinion, you know beforehand it would never appear in print.” NATO conflicts turned out to be disasters. U.S inspired conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria alone put 20.9 million refugees on the road to nowhere. Libya and media hyped and laundered UK Foreign Secretary William Hague
and his military henchmen. If we had a genuinely free media these hapless goons would be vigorously questioned by non-partisan presenters and audiences that have not been vetted beforehand. Can you recall genuine debate in which those opposed to non-European or refugee displacement was allowed to mirror the host people’s disenchantment? I can’t either. Did a single media disclose that a recent pro-refugee demo in Madrid was NGO and cash sponsored? We are all negatively affected by the European Union’s anti-Russian trade sanctions. Embargoes rebounded catastrophically. I do not recall a member of the hapless political elite being robustly questioned on this hot topic. The splintering near bankrupt European Union, headed by two unelected Presidents and a coven of commissioners, is no more democratic
that the USSR. No debate in media. There are honest journalists but an open mind and mouth often ends in death or exile. Former editor of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “I’ve been a journalist for about 25 years, and I’ve been educated to lie, to betray, and not to tell the truth to the public.” Soon afterwards, in full health, 56year old Dr Udo Ulfkotte died. So did former CIA Director William Colby after saying, “The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media.” Australian investigative journalist John Pilger: “We have got to stop using the term mainstream (media). It is actually an extreme. What could be more extreme than institutions that popularise rapacious wars and deceive about economic policy?” Fernando Casado, Spanish analyst and legal expert: “Some journalists are quite open-minded and aware of the real situation, but
have no choice but to write what is expected of them by their editors in order to make both ends meet and have a decent salary.” Corporate media is as out of touch with popular sentiment as are politicians. Try to make the connection. Then, let us fantasise that one day we might enjoy a genuinely free press in which debate is actually encouraged rather than manipulated at best and marginalised at worst.

Pooling my thoughts by
Colin Bird
It’s that time of year when we swap our morning walks for an hour of strenuous activity in the pool, although not until the water temperature reaches 25C. I’m a bit of a wuss like that. These are our preferred means of daily exercise which we find much more enjoyable than regular visits to the gym. Our local gymnasium is a relatively short walk away, but it became something of a chore. The crunch came after the proprietor refused our request to suspend the Princess’s membership until she had recovered from extensive foot surgery. His reaction was, “Why? She still has the use of her upper body”. Up yours Tonto, I more or less told him, and we haven’t been back since. The first morning at the pool saw me execute my customary leap into the deep end. But a strange thing happened. Like those clips in movies where a character is moving at lightning speed, but the special effects lads have slowed other people and traffic down to a crawl. Well that was me in reverse. I had reached optimum height and with my arms clasped tightly around my knees, was poised in mid-air, when I had an alarming thought. Had I removed my hearing-aids? Yes I know it’s surprising to learn that one so young needs these devices, but there you are. Too many rock concerts in the seventies. Hearing aid technology and water do not mix and instead of my past life flashing before me, all I was hearing was “nineteen hundred euros; nineteen hundred euros” repeating itself. Then, still hovering, I questioned whether or not I had taken the requisite poolside shower just seconds before, but it was like those occasions when you lock the front door after leaving home. The wife asks in the car, “Did you lock up?” You know that you did, but feel compelled to go back and make sure. I knew that I had showered. Hadn’t I? Because if not and our pool superintendant had spotted it, then I was toast. Our superintendant makes Genghis Khan look like Sooty and is the main reason why our community pool is one of the best in the area, and not showering prior to swimming is a castratable offence. But happy to relate, the aforementioned aids were at home, and it was confirmed by the Princess that we had indeed showered together. Now how could I have forgotten something like that?

The way it is… by
Harvey Mann
“Phew! It ain’t ‘arf hot”, is a well-used expression by holiday makers as they arrived on the Costa’s, during July and August. “I really don’t know how the locals put up with it” you can hear people say, “the intensity of the sun, and particularly the long hot nights, make it difficult to sleep”. At the same time as many Spanish towns and cities, like Sevilla who recorded a temperature of more than 50c, there are many other places apart from the Mediterranean and around the world are undergoing intense heat, even Britain has hit 34c the hottest it’s been in more than 40 years, while across the globe in countries like Brazil and Chile downpours have brought floods with landslides in China, has the world’s weather gone mad? Whenever the word environment or global warming is mentioned, peoples eyes glaze over, “Oh yes, they say, global warming what rubbish, soon we will all burn to a cinder ha,ha, it’s an age old bit of nonsense ” they say. Well folks I hope I don't bore you to tears, but I have some very important news for you, so if you are a sensible person with families maybe grandchildren growing up I ask you to read on. Apart from being a journalist, I’m also a professor of natural sciences and environmental issues, also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society I have travelled as Far East to China and as far West to the Hawaiian Islands, up to the Arctic Circle and as far South as the Antarctic, this during a period of twenty three years, so I think I am reasonably qualified to write about the scale of damage to our world. A few weeks ago Donald trump marched out on the Paris climate agreement meeting before he could sign, only he and two other countries failed to sign after it had already been ratified by 195 countries who recognise the overwhelming evidence to reduce harmful gases that is poisoning the atmosphere. During Trumps election campaign he promised out of work Americans more jobs, so since his election victory he has employed more coal miners and more people to work in the power industry, now America can say that they have more employed people then they have had for many years. Thousands of scientists from all over the world for years have been trying to understand what more we have to do to combat the serious downturn of the planets environment. Some scientists have even suggested that in not to many years to come most humans will have
Briksdal glacier Photo credit: Flickr
to wear space type clothes so that they can cope with the intense heat and rays from the sun, and the obnoxious gases being released by the power stations around the world. Certain countries the Far East such as Vietnam most people wear large straw hats and long sleeved shirts and long skirts when they go out into the street, this is their simple way for them to protect themselves, many Chinese wear masks as the air pollution in Most cities is desperately bad for the health. I have witnessed huge icebergs split apart in the Arctic circle crumble into the sea, recently a village in Greenland was devastated when a tsunami caused by a falling splintered iceberg had swept their village away killing many inhabitants, the same happens in the Antarctic as huge pieces of ice crash down and become enveloped by the warming sea this is known as calving, with then huge ice flows threatening all that lays before it. I have walked on the millions of years old Briksdal glacier in Norway and watched as large parts of the glacier is melting into the sea, the glacier had been greatly reduced in size by the warmer climate. Islands as far away in the Indian Ocean have been effected by rising tides such as the Maldives, the Seychelles and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific the highest point on some of these Island is only a few feet above the water line, the Maldives Islands West of India is
only 1.3 metres above sea level, a rise of three feet would submerge all of the 1100 Islands, with about 325 thousand inhabitants. The Seychelles has a population of around 87.122 thousand inhabitants, all of these could be affected during a big surge, as with hundreds of other low lying Islands and main lands could be swamped by rising sea levels. In the last twenty years a large hole appeared in the ozone layer above the Artic allowing the intense heat from the Sun to disturb our weather patterns, now there is evidence that the hole is closing, without any real explanation, this has happened before however it reopened again. I’ve spent a long time in Central and East Africa such as Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Tanzania, in some of these places rain fall has been almost non-existent, crops have died and many people are undergoing starvation as famine ravages their families, I once acted as an Escort to take 25 lorries with 600 tonnes of grain with the World Food Programme of the United Nations from Kampala to Ayod in the Sudan, and wrote a book called the Wages of Fear I survived a life threatening journey through barren wastes and the ongoing war in Southern Sudan. The world’s wildlife has also suffered greatly at our hands over the last 40 or 50 decades, many animals hunted to extinction, such as elephants and rhinos now whales are being washed up after they choke to death on plastic bags dumped by lazy or stupid people the same fate goes for dolphins and other large sea life. Certainly our throw away style and the amount of cars on the roads, has gone a long way to disturbing the changing pattern of the weather and it that has become the most unpredictable part of our lives. As far as I’m concerned the sun has become infinitely hotter, with temperatures around the Mediterranean that have been blistering hot, down pours in countries that have hacked their forest to pieces. I will almost certainly not be around when the time comes when people will greet each other on the streets dressed like astronauts, or have to cower in the shade, so in the meantime I’m off to my terrace with a large gin and tonic and a huge amount of ice, sit under a parasol and think about all my scientific colleagues around the world who are striving to come up with a solution to make the earth more bearable in the summer. Cheers.

Cancer survivors paddle for charity
FIVE women who fought cancer have paddle-boarded 10 kilometres from the Port of Estepona to La Duquesa Marina, arriving an hour earlier than expected. Yolanda Preciados, Marian Santiago, Patricia Alonso, Carmen Diaz and Susana Laguarda set off around 10am last Saturday cheered on by friends, family and well-wishers. Company, Paloma Blanca, released white doves to mark the beginning of the challenge and Susana Aragon, Councillor for Beaches and Adrian Trujillo, Councillor for Sports, and Fernando Calleja, Estepona’s Commissioner of the National Police, were present for the event’s start. The Surfing Life challenge, which was organised by the parent company of both marinas involved; Marinas del Mediterraneo, and sponsored by Navigaport and Mistral, who were also all on hand to wave the women off.
Accompanied by a boat from Marinas del Mediterraneo, a Guardia Protection vessel and a patrol boat from the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service, the five adventurers exited the port in the direction of Manilva and began their paddle around 200 metres off the coast. Not deterred by the mist, wind or waves, the women battled on, “because sometimes your strength comes not from your arms or body, but your mind; the “grey muscle”, which is the most important one we have,” according to one of the challengers, Susana Laguarda, a member of the Guardia Civil. Another participant, Carmen Diaz, a pharmacist, explained,“you have to take the positives from a disease like cancer, and for me the positive thing has been valuing the people who have been with me in the worst moments and enjoy every minute of life.”
Marian Santiago, a Guardia Civil traffic cop, added, “there are many associations that are doing a lot for people dealing with cancer. Whenever possible we must help these organisations and give them visibility.” Marbella businesswoman, Yolanda Preciados, commented, “with a positive attitude you can do anything. We want to show that there is a lot of life after illness, that anything can be overcome with courage and a little luck.” Patricia Alonso, a biologist by profession, could not shake her smile off her face as she finished the challenge. Tired and sunburned, she thanked the organisers for the giving the women the opportunity to take on the challenge, explaining, “these events energise us because we see how popular they are. This is food for the soul.”

The Prodigy at Weekend Beach
THE COUNDOWN to this year’s Weekend Beach Festival at Torre del Mar continues with The Prodigy headlining the event, which runs from 5 to 8 July. THE PRODIGY are set to headline the Costa del Sol’s Weekend Beach Festival in Torre del Mar from 5 to 8 July. The event’s organisers have now confirmed the line-up with additional performances by Rosendo, LA, Matthias Tanzmann and The Royal Room, while the festivals’ promoters have promised a few extra surprises. The event, which takes place on Torre del Mar’s beach, has been running every year since 2014 and sees tens of thousands of music-lovers camping out next to the sea.
The festival attracts both national and international acts and plays host rock, pop, metal, fusion, reggae and hip hop music. The music event attracts young people from all over Axarquia who camp out on the beach and enjoy the music on offer. Last year, Torre del Mar’s town hall announced that the festival had attracted between €2.5 to €3 million in revenue for the area, attracting around 33,000 visitors to the event each day. This year’s budget has been increased, which has allowed infrastructure improvements to be made, while keeping ticket prices low. Tickets cost from €40 and can be bought at www.weekendbeach.es

“I’m going to” and negatives Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
Let’s start this week with some sentences which revise what we learnt in the previous article. They can all build together very simply, by combining “I” words (quiero – I want, necesito – I need, puedo – I can) with verbs in their basic, or infinitive, form, that is the form that ends in “–ar”,”-er” or “–ir”. QUIERO TRABAJAR I want to work. NECESITO COCINAR I need to cook. PUEDO BAILAR I can dance. NECESITO COMER TRES VECES AL DÍA I need to eat three times a day. QUIERO JUGAR OTRA VEZ I want to play again. PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA I can open the door. Now we are going to introduce another “I” expression, which works in exactly the same way as the ones we have already seen. This time it consists of two words - VOY A and it means “I’m going to”. “I am going to” is rather a long expression in English, but it cannot be translated word for word into Spanish. We need to think about the concept it expresses, which is related to my “intention” to do something. When we want to express our intention in Spanish these are the two words we should use VOY A, and we then follow them with any infinitive verb in just the same way as before. For example: VOY A COCINAR (I’m going to cook) VOY A ABRIR (I’m going to open) One of the most important keys to learning Spanish is to realize that we cannot translate word for word. This is the big mistake that many people make. In actual fact, most of our confusion about Spanish comes from our insistence on trying to translate literally all the time when it is the idea behind the
words which is the important thing. Something else you may have noticed is that the Spanish use fewer words than English to express the same ideas, which is amazing in itself when you think how much they like speaking. Here are some more sentences for you to translate into English. This time I will put the answers at the end of the article. QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA VOY A COMER AHORA NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL Now we’re going to look at something new, which we can do without needing to learn any new words at all. This is absolutely true and just shows how easy basic Spanish really is. Here it is – if you put the word NO in front of any of your new sentences you instantly make them negative. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is remarkably simple and much easier than English. For example:. VOY A COCINAR I’m going to cook NO VOY A COCINAR I’m not going to cook NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I need to change money NO NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I don’t need to change money QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I want to go back to England NO QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I don’t want to go back to England PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can sleep here NO PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can’t sleep here Please take a second to look at the way these
negative forms are made in English. “I’m not going to”, “I don’t need to” “I can’t”. Imagine being a foreigner trying to learn English, you have to learn lots of different ways of making negatives, whereas in Spanish you only ever have to put NO in front of the verb – and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve made your sentence negative. You see – I told you it was easy! Now here are the answers to the sentences above: QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO: “I want to dance with you” (You never know when this phrase might come in handy) PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA. “I can work tomorrow” (Anathema to some people, but a few of us still have to do it!) VOY A COMER AHORA. “I am going to eat now” (We could also translate this “I’m going to have lunch now” as the Spanish also use “COMER” to refer to having their big midday meal.) NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL. “I need to learn Spanish” (You can’t argue with that really, and it could be useful when you want to encourage a Spanish person to actually speak to you in Spanish rather than English which tends to happen round here more and more). Now here are some sentences to think about for next week. This time you’re going to translate four short sentences from English into Spanish. The basic structures are exactly as we’ve learnt them so far – there are no tricks, and the answers will appear next week! I don’t want to speak English. I’m not going to open the door. I can’t cook very well. I need to work a little.

Code Breaker
Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 20 represents T and 21 represents Y, so fill in T every time the figure 20 appears and Y every time the figure 21 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.
Kenny, I am dreaming of a shipwreck over and over again. I swim into the wreck and each time I take something out and carry it safely back to shore! What does this mean? Pam J. Hi Pam. Rescuing from an existing shipwreck is an act of both saving, and consolidating. The wreck has already happened but you are trying your best to salvage things about your life, now that the ship has sunk. Each treasure you find is a memory that you want to preserve and something to remind you of where you once were. In the here and now you can surround yourself with the salvage of the treasures you once had, as they are trophies of the past. Your access to retrieve the treasures sounds like it is very simple and safe and successful, but these may not be words you would use if you were to be back sailing on that ship before it sank!! Got it?
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Use your exceptional emotional abilities to steer things in another direction. Take advantage of a loophole and let others know that you are out there and not to be messed with! The Cosmos will reward you!
A job worth doing is worth doing well, but I wonder how many people know how hard you are working and just what it entails to stay on top. Mars is in opposition to Pluto this week which mixes personal desires and actions by Mars against the spiritual side of things with Pluto. Expect changes all along the line, so keep your feet on the ground.
You are ready to turn that strong and stubborn will into the realm of new experience right now, for your benefit and those who work alongside you. Experiment with what needs to come next, and then own your space, because above all, you deserve it! Whilst a clearer way ahead is the main aim, see to it that others toe the line whilst you champion on!
Keeping a secret is just what you have to do right now, though it isn’t by choice in any way! Someone has got hold of the wrong end of the stick and so is being abrupt and harsh without knowing the truth of the matter right now. See what others are saying about recent events and then guide your response to satisfy the curiosity they are prioritising on.
With Mercury in Leo and squaring up to Uranus there comes along a double whammy which you will be able to turn to your advantage. Somebody isn’t playing ball and won’t take your advice right now. Time to think on your feet as a snap decision is the only way to deal with this unfair fight between a grossly inflated ego and sheer obstinacy!
Venus enters and saves the day with the loving attention that only tender love and care can bring. You have been very hard on yourself as late, and this was the drive you needed at the time; but now things are showing signs of solution, and you can take that back seat. Allow others to see you as someone who cares deeply, but is nobody’s fool too!
Venus is ensconced in Gemini and doing sterling work as usual. Mercury squares on Uranus and the cat is amongst the pigeons this week as there seems to be a fight for your affections going on. Be warned that not everybody can be happy and be prepared to nip something very nasty in the bud before untold and unwarranted damages are done.
Something has got to give as what is good for the goose is good for the gander too. Take a long hard look at your position and have pride to say that you did what you could, but alone it could never be enough. Now it is high time for somebody close to put their hand well and truly into their pockets and stump up for those unexpected expenses!
Moon magic allows you to make tentative plans for your bucket list. There is so much you know you have to do before you are ready to move on. Have fun knowing that you did what you did because you had to, and because somebody had to take control. Beware of others who are waiting your next move, but who may not be featuring in the main event!
With both your planetary leaders in action this week unfortunately Mars and Pluto are in distinct opposition. Whatever transpires this week it will not be of your bidding, although you may need to go on with it just for a while. When people are abusing power you may be taking one step forwards and two back, but you are avoiding any conflicts!
Jupiter has influence sublime over Neptune as they tryst midweek. Empowering and generous as a benefactor, Jupiter has kept quiet for too long, and Neptune is stalling for time to ensure that your happiness is not occluded in any way whatsoever. Time was when you had to hold back, but now do what you have to do is put all your cards on the table!
The Sun squares on Jupiter, and beware that somebody appears to be in a great hurry to get their goal, and that this would be achieved better with better discipline and a bit of forethought. Strike out against such foolish optimism and the ill-gotten gains of others who are simply fuelling their egos, and certainly doing nobody any favours.
Saturn colludes with Mercury to ensure that an avenue of communication is left open for the benefit of all concerned. Things should never have ever got to this sorry state, but needs must when the Devil drives! In hindsight you should never have got involved, but then it wasn’t you who decided to change the goalposts this time around either!

When stress becomes depression
The 10 foods you should eat every day Eat these delicious disease-fighting foods to boost your health and well-being. Apples
Compared to other commonly consumed fruits, apples score high for antioxidant activity. Much of apple’s antioxidant awesomeness is in the peel! So, do not peel the apple – buy organic. Apples help create better health especially in the areas of heart health, diabetes, cancer, stroke and brain health.
Green tea
Most men suffer from stress at some time in their lives, whether it be work, relationship, life event, health or financially related. We can often remain unaware that stress is affecting us as different people react to life challenges in different ways and what one person may perceive as stressful, another may not. People also experience differing symptoms when they are stressed but the most common include the following, physical symptoms: Headaches, nausea, stomach ache, change in bowel habits, loss of appetite or overeating, tiredness, insomnia, chest pains, palpitations, erectile dysfunction and hyperventilation Psychological symptoms: Irritability or impatience, tearfulness, feeling overwhelmed, unable to switch off, feeling worried, poor concentration, being disinterested in other aspects of life and loss of sense of humour. Behavioural symptoms: Biting fingernails, picking at skin, smoking more cigarettes, drinking more alcohol, making a point of avoiding situations that trigger the stress and withdrawal from social engagements and hobbies. Taking steps to breakdown a big problem into smaller parts that are easier to address, is a good place to start when trying to discover what triggers our stress. In addition, we should try to set realistic goals and recognise that sometimes there will be things that we cannot change. We should also ensure look after our physical health by sleeping and eating well, whilst cutting down on excess smoking and drinking alcohol wherever possible. Finding time for physical exercise, by organising out time will help to release feel good pheronomes in our bodies and more importantly we should not forget to factor in breaks and periods of down time. If the original trigger that caused the stress settles down or disappears but behaviour, feelings and physical symptoms persist it may be a sign that our stress is turning into depression or anxiety. Feeling sad, a loss of appetite, sleeping poorly, and concentration difficulties for more than two weeks, especially if the stressful trigger has passed, may be a clue that we are becoming depressed. However, experiencing symptoms of feeling afraid, panic attacks, irritability or restlessness for more than two weeks this may point to anxiety. Most crucially, taking little enjoyment in life, starting to feel worthless, having thoughts of self-harm or considering that life is not worth living are signs that we should seek urgent help. If any of the above affects your life and you feel the need to talk confidentially about your feelings, do not hesitate to call the freephone Samaritans in Spain number 900 525 100, available 24 hours a day throughout Spain.
There are a vast amount of studies showing green tea’s health and weight loss benefits. What is responsible for green tea’s ability to prevent disease and more? The catechins contained in the leaves of the tea plant. Catechins are a group of antioxidants that are powerful in their protective ability against illness and disease. Green tea is also beneficial as an adjunct to any weight loss programme.
Quinoa
Quinoa is one of the only plant foods that is a complete protein! It has more fibre and twice as much protein as brown rice; quinoa even cooks just like rice. It is chock-full of healthy nutrients and when you add the high fibre and high protein along with an added healthy fat, you have a food that will balance blood sugar and that means less weight and better health for you.
Almonds
Almonds are high in the hearthealthy oleic acid that is responsible for many health benefits including a better memory. Almonds are high in fibre and protein and because they are so crunchy, just one ounce will go a long way compared to other nuts.
Blueberries
Blueberries are one of the most antioxidant rich foods in the world and top the list of healthy foods to eat every day. Antioxidants are necessary for life and are well known to reverse and prevent heart disease and even cancer. The blue colour of the berry comes from its polyphenols which provide most of its antioxidant properties. Blueberries are also high in vitamin C and fibre.
Eggs Eggs are not only low in calories, they are a powerhouse of protein, vital nutrients and healthy fat. Research has shown that people who replace carbohydrates with eggs for breakfast lost 65 per cent more weight and egg eaters benefit greatly with more added nutrients to their diet. The high protein content in eggs not only balances blood sugar keeping you from being tempted by junk food, it helps to build muscle as well.
Spinach Like other dark greens, spinach is an excellent source of betacarotene, a powerful disease-fighting antioxidant that’s been shown to protect against and fight heart disease and cancer. This dark, leafy green, contains several important phytochemicals, including lutein, which helps prevent age-related macular degeneration. Spinach also contains Lipoic Acid, which helps antioxidant vitamins C and E regenerate.
Yoghurt
Greek yogurt has less natural sugar lactose and more protein than regular yogurt. This means that ounce for ounce, you are getting a nutritional punch of calcium (a single cup has almost 25 per cent of your daily requirement) and that translates to more lost body fat and better health. Yogurt also contains beneficial bacteria that calm down inflamed digestive tracts as well as boosting your immune system. Your digestive tract is where 70 per cent of your immune system resides.
Avocado
Healthy fat is critical not just for weight loss, but to optimise health and that includes your mood as well. The type of fat in avocados – monounsaturated fat - improves your cholesterol and decreases triglycerides (fats) in your blood, this means a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.
Bell peppers
Bell peppers come in many different shades such as green, purple, orange and red. Each of them, because of their colour, adds a distinct different array of phytonutrients that will help to create optimal health. Bell peppers are dense with vitamin C and vitamin E - both protective against poor health.

Heat and sleep The recent heatwave sweeping across the country has caught many of us off guard, as our bodies try desperately to catch up with the sudden jump in temperatures. It’s bad enough during the day, as we try and dodge the sun by sitting under parasols, walking on the shady side of the street and popping into Mercadona just to hang around the fridges. However, although the warm, balmy nights may be perfect for alfresco entertainment they can also be problematic for sleep and banging up the air-con to max isn’t always the answer. Ideally, bedrooms should be around 16-18°C, but when the outside temperature remains higher, or your bedroom has retained the heat from the day, it can be difficult to keep cool. Your body temperature needs to lower slightly before you go to sleep which is why it's difficult to drop off when you're too hot. Here’s some top tips to help you sleep like a baby kitten between now and September: Bottle Up Take a bottle to bed! No, not a bottle of rioja. Dig out your hot water bottle fill it with ice cold water and small lumps of mojito ice and take it to bed with you. Sock it to me Try putting socks in the fridge to wear in bed as cooling your feet lowers the overall
temperature of your skin and body, ideal during a hot summer night. Make sure you don’t confuse them with slices of jamon, when you raid the fridge for a post fiesta bocadillo. The same applies for pillow cases. Draw down Keep curtains or blinds drawn during the day to keep the sun out and your room cooler at night. Cool off Before bedtime, a cooling shower or bath is ideal for bringing down your body temperature. White noise A fan in your bedroom helps to move the air around the room, and the white noise sound has been proven to help deeper sleep. If the noise keeps you awake, invest in some earplugs to drift off and if it's really hot put a tray of ice and a little water in front of the fan which will cool the air even more. Smooth and silky Choosing the right bedding is vitally important, so choose silk, cotton and wool to help regulate your body temperature and wick away moisture. Lightweight, breathable bed sheets are vital in warmer months, allowing your body to keep cool, so try pure french linen, with its
cool to the touch nature. It’s naturally two to three times more absorbent than cotton and evaporates moisture easily. Follow the light Try to choose light-coloured bed linen. As with clothing, dark colours consume the heat and light colours reflect it, so stick to whites and pale pastel colours. No to nude Wear light, breathable cotton pyjamas and stay clear of anything fleecy and thick. This is actually better than wearing nothing at all as natural fabric will absorb any perspiration. Coffee? Avoid too much caffeine, alcohol or a big meal before bedtime as this can make you feel hot in the middle of the night because of dehydration and over-active digestion. Hydrate, Hydrate Drink plenty of cold water during the evening and keep a glass by the bed. Morning peel Last, but no means least, at this time of year, it is so important to pull the bed sheets back in the morning to allow your bedding to breathe and freshen up.
Beauty tips
Shield your scalp
When it comes to laying on the beach or taking a dip in the pool, SPF is the obvious choice to protect your body — but what about your scalp? That unprotected skin, exposed at the part, hairline or thinning area, is just as much at risk as anywhere else on your body. Other than shielding your scalp with a chic hat or umbrella, experts recommend a DIY method that protects strands as well: Combine one tablespoon of SPF 50 lotion or liquid into half cup of water to be dissolved. Mist it on with a spray bottle or rub it on your scalp and hair before stepping into the sun.
Ask the Optician Why is an eye test an important health screening? By Amrik Sappal, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola What can an eye test spot? A surprising amount can be revealed from an eye test, from the early stages of conditions which can permanently damage the vision such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, to spotting warning signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, risk of a stroke and symptoms associated with brain tumours. New research suggests that changes in the retina may reveal the presence of Parkinson ’s disease and allow early diagnosis before patients start to suffer from the tremors. How can ophthalmologists see these health conditions? To be in with the best chance of spotting the signs of health conditions you need to have a thorough eye test which includes a range of tests and the latest technology. A great tool for health checks is Digital Retinal Photography which uses a camera to take a picture of the back of the eye – the only part of the human body where the microcirculation of blood can be observed directly. The state-of-the-art technology helps to identify changes that might be associated with certain eye conditions and health complaints. If necessary, the optician can refer patients directly for further medical examination. Where can I get digital retinal photography included in my eye test? Specsavers Opticas have Digital Retinal cameras across all stores including Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. To find your nearest store and book an eye test visit www.specsavers.es.

Easy peasy cheesy tailgating bread Bread and cheese is one of life’s loveliest things, whether you live in Spain, France, Italy, UK or the good ol’ US of A, everyone has their favourite way of eating it. However when the two ingredients are warmed up, it’s a whole different story…….. Its bread, butter and cheese. Simple right? So why is it so moreish? This is one of those recipes that is extremely easy to make and doesn't take a lot of time, and it's best eaten right out of the oven, when the cheese is at the height of stretchiness and the bread is steaming and oh-so-comforting on the inside. So why is it called tailgating bread? The answer is in the shape as when you cut a grid pattern into a loaf of crusty bread, it kind of looks like a football. But we're pretty sure it tastes much better. Go ahead. Get your hands greasy, pull out the cheesiest, butteriest piece on the loaf, and keep coming back for more. Soft-on-the-inside and crusty-on-theoutside Italian bread that is cut into grabable squares, generously doused with melted butter mixed with minced green onion and garlic, toasted till hot and tender, then crammed full of cheddar cheese and baked until bubbly with browned bits of cheese capping it. This is a true crowd-pleaser! Ingredients: 1 knob butter 1 clove garlic, large, peeled and minced 1 bunch green onions, trimmed and minced 450gm loaf of crusty bread 450gm grated extra-sharp cheddar cheese 1 bunch fresh parsley, minced
Method: Preheat oven to 350°F (or preheat grill to medium heat). Lay out a double thickness of standard foil (or a single thickness of heavy-duty foil.) Spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a microwave safe bowl, or a heavy-bottomed skillet, heat the butter until melted and mix in the garlic and sliced green onions. Stir with a serving spoon.

Lay the loaf of bread on the cutting board and cut a ½” grid pattern into it, stopping about ¼” above the base of the bread so that it stays connected. Gently pry apart the bread and spoon the butter mixture along the seams. Gently wrap the foil up around the top of the loaf and put on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, open the foil

Faster, Higher, Car trade growth at Farther: The great record levels VW car scandal Less than 18 months ago, news surfaced that one of the most trusted and popular car brands ever had deliberately misled millions of their customers. Faster, Higher, Farther: The Inside Story of the Volkswagen Scandal presents a shocking and incredibly compelling exposé of one of the great corporate scandals of all time, revealing a gripping tale of executive arrogance, that led to the downfall of one of the world’s most prestigious brands. Author Jack Ewing, an esteemed New York Times journalist has covered the story from the day the news broke and has followed it ever since, acquiring unprecedented access to key players and a ringside seat during the past and on-going legal proceedings. In September 2015, when news of the Volkswagen clean diesel fraud broke, it sent shockwaves across the world. Consumers were angered, investors were panicked and the company was left humiliated, as lawsuits and criminal investigations piled up. By August 2016 Volkswagen had settled with American regulators and
car-owners for $15bn, with additional fines and claims still looming. However, in the UK and Europe, settlements have yet to be made. Ewing documents Volkswagen’s rise from “the people’s car” during the Nazi era to one of Germany’s most prestigious and important global brands, touted for being “green”, to its then bitter fall in Faster, Higher, Farther. He paints vivid portraits of Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch and chief executive Martin Winterkorn, arguing that their unremitting ambition drove employees, working feverishly in pursuit of impossible sales targets, to illegal methods. He also describes how Volkswagen, a great corporate success story, was gravely undermined by the company’s lack of ethical foundation. The book reads like a fast-paced thriller as one revelation leads to another. As is so often the case, truth can be so much more shocking than fiction. It’s a compelling tale. Faster, Higher, Farther: The Inside Story of the Volkswagen Scandal by Jack Ewing is out now.
Never see a red light again Imagine every time you go to work, to do some shopping in the car or have a day out in one of the busy towns and cities without ever hitting a single red traffic light.
It might not be happening in Spain for the foreseeable future, but that day is coming nearer for parts of the UK. It won’t be just James Corden that, according to the adverts for Confused.com, will be able to control their driving experiences. Technology is currently undergoing trials to make ‘riding the green wave’ a dayto-day reality. Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory uses information on traffic light timings from a roadside unit to display to the driver the best speed to travel at to get a green light. “There’s not much worse after a long day than to hit one red light after another on the drive home, and be forced to stop and
start again at every junction,” said Christian Ress, supervisor, Driver Assist Technologies, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. It’s been estimated that daily drivers in the UK alone spend two days each year waiting at red lights, and similar technologies already enable cyclists in Copenhagen and Amsterdam to avoid red lights. If drivers find hitting a red light unavoidable the system displays how long until the light turns green. A spokesman for Ford said: “The driver may, for instance, be travelling at 30mph in a built-up area. The system will warn that if he or she continues at that speed, the lights will be on red when they reach the lights. But it advises the driver that if they drop their speed to 20mph or 25mph, then the lights will be on green when they get there.” Trials are taking place on both public roads and closed circuits in Milton Keynes and Coventry during the next two years.
UK Automotive’s 18th annual Sustainability Report reveals the manufacturing sector turned over a record £77.5 billion in 2016, marking a seventh consecutive year of growth, while productivity, production output and vehicle sales also increased. UK car and commercial vehicle production and new vehicle registration volumes grew to record levels in 2016, up 8.9% and 0.2% respectively. Meanwhile, employment in manufacturing remained stable at 169,000 jobs, resulting in productivity reaching a record high of 11.8 vehicles produced for each person employed in the industry. The average manufacturing worker generated more than £130,000 for the British economy, up 9.8% on 2015. The number of livelihoods dependent on the sector as a whole stood at 814,000 across manufacturing, retail, distribution and repair services. The record turnover by UK motor manufacturing represents a 9.0% increase on 2015, with the additional value added to the UK economy rising 7.3% to £21.5 billion. The industry also upped its investment in innovation; with R&D spend reaching £2.75 billion last year, up from £2.5 billion in 2015. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said: “Today’s results demonstrate how UK Automotive is delivering growth across the UK, boosting productivity and improving environmental performance. This has been driven by massive investment, in new models, plants, innovation and one of the world’s most skilled workforces. However, for UK auto manufacturing to continue to thrive, we need clarity on the future, post Brexit, to encourage ongoing investment and growth.” Key to the UK automotive sector’s continued success is its highly skilled workforce. In addition to increasing productivity, industry has improved the working environment of its employees, demonstrated by the high retention rate, with staff turnover falling to just 5% in 2016 compared with the national average of 16.5%. At the same time, investment in skills increased, with the number of days’ training per employee up 9.1%. In addition, Sustainability Report signatories reported an intake of 870 new apprentices last year, on top of the 800 apprentices that were retained. The sector’s improved social and economic performance was achieved while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes. In 2016, CO2 emissions per vehicle produced fell by -2.9%, energy use per vehicle fell by -3.2% and water use by -3.5%. Waste to landfill was cut by more than a third (-33.7%) to a new record low of 0.9% of all waste produced, with almost 90% recycled, while manufacturers continued to invest in onsite renewable energy production, in 2016 producing 57.7GHh of energy – enough to power 14,420 homes. Industry has continued to invest heavily in developing the latest low-emission technology to address the air quality challenge. Alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) registrations increased in 2016, up 22.2% to account for 3.3% of the market, making the UK the biggest market for plug-in electric cars in Europe. At the same time, average new car CO2 emissions fell for a 19th year to just 120.1g/km – 33.6% below levels in 2000.

Walking football arrives on Costa Del Sol
Walking Football is probably one of the fastest growing new sports in the World and has now just arrived on the Costa Del Sol, with the launch of Walking Football Spain Walking Football began in 2011 in Chesterfield in the UK and was designed primarily for people over the age of 50, to continue to be able to play the game they love as they grow older. Since then, it has blossomed to over 1,000 clubs and even the EU are encouraging top league football teams to support it, as a form of community outreach. Walking Football is played as a 5-a-side or 7-a-side football match with no running and very minimal contact. This makes it ideal for men and women of all ages to play together. As yet, there are no standardised set of rules, but various bodies in the UK are looking to formalise the rules and regulations shortly. Adam Chandler, founder of Walking Football Spain, explained why he began the initiative, “I was always a keen sports player and played football for my Regimental Unit when I was in the Army and also played tennis and badminton regularly.” Said Adam. “But in my 40s, I began to have problems with my knees and required keyhole surgery on both knees, twice, putting an end to my footballing days, sadly.” Adam, having moved to Marbella last November and keen to get back into sport, was unable to find any walking football clubs, so decided to set up his own. “Walking Football is a great way to not only play football, but also to keep fit and to make new friends, as lot of seniors in Spain can be a bit lonely, so joining a football club is a perfect way to make an instant group of friends and to have some fun in the process.” He said. With the growing popularity of the sport throughout Europe and beyond, Walking Football Spain are planning to host their very first tournament this September in Torremolinos having already chosen a charity to support , Cudeca, who offer palliative care to cancer sufferers in the Malaga province. Avalon Europe, who are the market leading provider of funeral plans in Spain, already committing to a sponsorship deal with Walking Football Spain. Walking Football Spain currently play at 10.30h every Thursday morning at the EstadioSanta Maria, Calle Joaquin Rodrigo, Las Chapas (Elviria), near Marbella, but they are looking to increase the number of weekly games to cover Benalmadena, San Pedro and even Gibraltar. Fees for the one hour session is just 5€ and anyone looking to partake, can visit their website at www.walkingfootballspain.com or send an email to adam@walkingfootballspain.com.
