Dolphin killed by selfie obsessed beachgoers
by Tahnee Wright A BABY dolphin died last week after “hundreds” of beachgoers in southern Spain surrounded the animal to touch it and take pictures with it. The incident - which took place on the beach in Mojacar - has sparked condemnation from Equinac, a Spanish non-profit organisation that advocates for marine wildlife. According to several posts on the group’s Facebook page, a baby dolphin that was stranded on the beach was quickly surrounded by numerous “curious” people, including children, who wanted to touch and photograph it. Some accidentally covered the dolphin’s spiracle, the blowhole the animals use to breathe, the group said. One concerned person reported the stranded animal to the country’s emergency services number, but by the time Equinac rescuers arrived at the beach, the dolphin was dead, the group said. “Once again, we note that the
human being is the most irrational species that exists,” Equinac wrote on Facebook, blasting the “selfishness” of those that had swarmed the animal. “There are many [who are] incapable of empathy for a living being that is alone, scared, starved, without his mother and terrified... All you want to do is to photograph and poke, even if the animal suffers from stress.” The group later clarified that the baby dolphin may have been isolated because it was sick or somehow separated from its mother. However, even though the beachgoers had not been responsible for the dolphin’s stranding, merely touching and photographing the animals can cause them to enter “a very high stress state” and at worst, to experience fatal shock, the group said. Those who see a stranded dolphin should call the emergency services rather than try to handle the animal, it added.

Animal charity faces closure Photo Credit: RTN
FOR many years, the Triple A charity situated above Marbella went about its business of saving abandoned cats and dogs thanks to the support of local residents. The concept has always been that no healthy animal would be put down but it takes a great deal of money to buy food for 500 dogs and large numbers of cats as well, let alone running costs for the sanctuary and vet bills. Although it was a challenge, each year saw lives being saved and younger healthier animals being found new forever homes but there will always be a permanent hard core of the elderly and slightly infirm who will never be rehoused. It came as an enormous surprise to all of their supporters when reports appeared that on April 11, 2016 their offices had been raided by a large number of officers from Seprona, many of their files were removed and at least three people, their president, secretary and a veterinarian had been arrested and taken away for questioning although they were released later the same day. This was followed up by the release of a damning video by Seprona on the day of the charities 25th Anniversary which appears to show dead animals and mistreatment by Triple A who immediately pointed out that the dead animals had
been delivered by the Marbella Townhall and that the charity kept the bodies frozen until they could be disposed of. No action was taken until later in the year when the three were interviewed in court and since then the matter has dragged on so that 16 months after the initial raid no-one has been prosecuted but equally no-one has been formally cleared. The Ayuntamiento still uses the facility to house animals picked up from the streets but mud sticks and despite the fact that nothing has been proven in a court of law and despite the continued love and understanding that the members give to the animals in their care, donations have dwindled and unless something positive happens, the charity will be forced to close. Hundreds of animals will be slaughtered immediately and then as strays are picked up, they can look forward to about a further week of life before they too are destroyed. This is a charity that has attracted support from Spanish as well as expatriate members of the community but considering how the British tend to bridle against animal cruelty and supposedly love their pets, this is an ideal opportunity to show support and save lives. For more information visit www. tripleamarbella.org and consider offering to donate just â‚Ź5 a month to help keep these cats and dogs alive.

€200 million investment boom by Jemima Roberts MIJAS Council has announced it expects to receive hundreds of millions of Euros of investment from Britons buying up property locally in the next 10 years following Brexit. Juan Carlos Maldonado, Mijas’ Mayor explained, “this council team has managed to instil confidence in British buyers to come and spend their money in our municipality.” He added the first €10 million have already hit Mijas, explaining, “the number of licences for building work in Mijas is growing and this real estate development reveals the confidence the town generates.” Mijas is also attracting substantial investment in its hotel industry. Juan Carlos Maldonado recently announced the council has approved a building permit to
refurbish luxury hotel, Byblos, with works beginning after the summer. Maldonado commented, “the deadlines are being met and, if everything continues to go to plan, once the summer season ends, this tourist attraction will have a green light to start refurbishments.” He added, “Byblos is a year-round quality attraction which draws in crowds in the golfing sector and most importantly boosts our town’s economy and generates employment.” The hotel is located on a plot of 50,873 square meters in the Mijas Golf urbanisation, offering sports equipment rental, a private green, hotel and small public green. Works will include adding 300 parking spaces below ground and 230 rooms. The hotel’s spa takes up an impressive 5,293 square metres, the hotel 35,424, the private green 15,056 and the private sports
area 1,915 square metres, with costs expected to reach €60 million to buy and refurbish the huge space. The investment will involve employing 200 staff directly, and 500 others indirectly. Hotel Byblos Mijas is the nearest five-star hotel to Malaga airport, located in a private peaceful area. The owners plant to refurbish the entire hotel while maintaining its character and enhancing its features. The Hotel Byblos Andaluz 5 * has been a landmark on the Costa del Sol for decades, and has two sister hotels in France, Byblos St.Tropez and Byblos Courchevel, which together project the best of European glitz and glamour. Some of the biggest names from politics, art, music and business have stayed in the chain, including Princess Diana, the Rolling Stones, Antonio Banderas, Julio Iglesias and the Saudi Arabian royal family.
Parking expanded MIJAS Council has announced it is creating a tender to finding a company to build further parking in the Virgen de la Peña car park. The project, which has an €180,000 budget, is one of five potential plots around the municipality for further parking. According to Councillor for Infrastructure, Jose Carlos Martin, “we have made this commitment to fulfil a demand voiced by residents. Parking is a problem that we need to tackle through various actions, the first of which is to expand existing parking, which has already been budgeted and we hope to begin work as soon as possible.” The scheme, which comes under the Mijas Pueblo Parking Plan, takes into account
residents’ views on where they think is the best location for additional parking. Jose Carlos Martin explained, “we have carried out a feasibility study which has given us data showing the various possibilities for parking locations around the municipality. This analysis gives us imporantant information of where the best place to expand parking would be so we can help our visitors and residents with the problem of lack of spaces.” He added other potential plots being considered include two in the Barrio Santana. The councillor said, “we are going to present the feasibility study to residents and then we will be start drafting a tender.” The project comes in the wake
of a series of improvements around Mijas, including cleaning of all parks the planting of 1,000 plants throughout the municipality as part of the Department for Green Spaces’ Beautification Plan, which seeks to enhance these areas with various species and colours of flower. Laura Moreno commented, “this type of work beautifies our green areas in each and every one of the municipality’s gardens, which are there for the enjoyment of locals and visitors.” She added, “we undertake the work we believe is essential for our town to look its best and we have had around 30 people carrying out the task.” Moreno thanked the work done
by all the staff on the project, explaining, “we must remember that we are talking about people who are not qualified and who are training at the moment, so I would like to congratulate them for their work. We want to continue training all the staff that use Mijas Complementary Services.” Among the plants are native species which adapt well to the area’s climate, including adelias, daylily and rosemary, among others. Carmen de Paz, coordinator of Mijas Complementary Services, commented, “this work takes us a little longer than a professional gardener, we are hoping to hire qualified staff and also train others.”

Barcelona – one week on... by Gregg Scott
The immediate aftermath
IT TOOK members of the police and security services – especially the Mossos d’Esquadra (the Cataluña police force) – just over 100 hours to catch and bring to justice the perpetrators of the outrage on Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Across the world, images of the aftermath of the terrorist attack which killed 13 innocent people and injured 100 others – some seriously and with life-changing conditions – reduced many to tears and with a sense of outrage. Men, women and children from 34 different countries were affected which proves the international attraction of one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations. But both the Spanish and visitors were back walking up and down the same boulevard within hours showing a sense of defiance to the terrorists and support to the victims and their families.
Mourners laid flowers across the streets in Las Ramblas near to the scene of the attack
The terrorists
Two of the four suspects arrested following the attacks have been charged by a judge in Madrid with terrorism offences. One of the remaining suspects was released but required to report to police on a weekly basis while investigations continued, and the other was detained for further questioning. During the hearings that were held behind closed doors it is understood from sources in the Spanish news media that one of those charged had confirmed that a much larger and daring attack had been planned. This potentially included a massive truck
bomb attack on Barcelona’s most iconic landmark of the unfinished Sagrada Família cathedral.
The driver
The terrorists were charged just 24 hours after police killed Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, the last unaccounted-for member of the ter-
rorism cell, in the countryside west of Barcelona. He was believed to be the driver of the van that killed the initial 13 people but it was sometime later that it was discovered that he also stabbed a man during his getaway.
The final victim
The man stabbed to death was Pau Pérez, from Vilafranca del Penedes and some 40
miles from Barcelona. He was found dead in the back of his Ford Focus used as Abouyaaqoub’s getaway vehicle at the scene of the latter’s death at the hands of police. In an horrific twist of fate, Pérez had called his family when he knew of the original attack to assure them he was OK. Minutes later as he went to get into his car, he was himself attacked and killed.
Checkpoint fugitive still on the run POLICE are still looking for a man on the run who was involved in what some witnesses thought at first was a terrorist incident unfolding. The wanted man refused to stop at a routine police checkpoint in Rojales which launched a car chase that ended up in Pilar de la Horadada. The fugitive’s car – since confirmed to be driving on false number plates - ended up crashing into a wall in Torre de la Horadada after being shot at by officers as he passed by a roundabout in Mil Palmeras. Three
shots were fired – two of which hit the car – but he continued with police vehicles in pursuit. After the crash, the man fled on foot sporting a bloody face from injuries sustained in the crash and is believed to be hiding in the vicinity. Several neighbours witnessed the events unfolding and posted it on social media when then caused alarm that a serious situation was taking place. Dressed in bulletproof vests and carrying machine guns, a detailed search of the
area has been taking place and at the time of going to press the wanted man has yet to be found. Police believe that this isn’t terrorist related and instead part of an organisation involved in drugs or burglaries. This has been backed up by the security councillor for Pilar de la Horadada, José Tomás Saura, who called for the local people to remain calm and stating that, “we are dealing with a common criminal and the police are working on arresting the suspect as soon as possible.”

by Jemima Roberts THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL has invested almost €1 million in helping under-30s get their first job. The organisation has worked with universities to help 79 undergraduates find a role within companies in Malaga, funding 70 per cent of their salary and social security payments. The majority of employers were looking for graduates in engineering, marketing and
architecture, offering fulltime work for one year. According to media reports Lorena Salguero Acevedo is a graduate from the University of Malaga who benefited from the scheme. The 28-year-old had two degrees but said he had until now had no success finding work “on his own.” Manuel Izquierdo Coveñas, aged 23, is another Malaga University graduate who found work through the initiative, having obtained a degree in mechanical engineering.

Meanwhile, 18-yearold aspiring pop star, Tallia Storm, has taken time out of her Marbella holiday to promote her career, taking a series of selfies on the beach in a black and gold Moschino bikini. The singer teamed her outfit with gold hoop earrings and sky-high heeled espadrilles. Tallia was first discovered by Elton John, aged 13, and is about to release her first song, Still in Love, about her former relationship with David and Victoria Beckham’s son, Brooklyn.
NOEL GALLAGHER has been spotted getting romantic while on a family holiday in the Formentera, kissing his wife of 17 years Sara MacDonald. The 50-year-old Oasis and High Flying Birds star is staying in Ibiza where he met his 43year-old wife in 2000, claiming it was “love at first sight.” The
pair have since had two children, Sonny, aged four, and Donovan, seven. The Scottish stunner showed off her toned body in a red, two-piece, bandeaustyle bikini before leaning over her husband to kiss him as he lounged on a sunbed. A SPANISH woman who had just given birth to her third child was decapitated by a faulty hospital lift. Rocio Cortes Nunez, 25, had just given birth by c-section and was being wheeled back to her room on a stretcher when the incident occurred at the Our Lady of Valme hospital in Seville last Sunday. Ms Nunez, who was still holding her new-born, was reportedly being moved to the maternity ward by a porter when the lift doors opened and closed a few times while they were inside. When the porter attempted to wheel the new mum out of the lift to use another one, it began to rise of its own accord with the doors open, leaving part of her body outside. Ms Nunez is survived by her new-born and two other daughters, aged four and five, as well as her husband
of four years, who said he was devastated by what happened. “This can’t be so. Today it was Rocio but tomorrow it could be someone else,” he told ABC Sevilla. Her brother-in-law David Gaspar said the accident was hard to believe and the family wants answers as to how it happened. While an investigation has been launched, officials are saying the lift had been inspected just a week earlier during its regular check and no problems were detected. Regional Health Minister Marina Alvarez described the accident as “rapid, unusual and tragic” and said they had met with the company that maintains the lift as part of their investigation. She also added that members of Ms Nunez’s family as well as the porter who was with her in the lift were undergoing counselling.

Drug bus driver sanctioned by Sally Underwood A BUS driver who tested positive to narcotics while he had 60 passengers on board has been sanctioned. The man, who police say they could not arrest “because there were not sufficient symptoms for the commission of crime,” instead now faces an administrative penalty. The driver’s passengers in Benalmadena were delayed after their driver was stopped and removed by the Guardia Civil following a routine drugs check. The vehicle was travelling from Hinojosa del Duque in Cordoba to Benalmadena when police boarded the bus and tested its driver for alcohol and narcotics, with the man testing positive for marijuana use. After the driver was removed by police, the bus and its passengers were stuck until around 11am when another driver, who tested negative for drink and drugs, could take over. Police roadside checks have recently been stepped up on journeys with coastal destinations in an effort to ensure drivers are complying with the law and reduce accidents. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil’s traffic department explained, “The dangerousness of accidents involving vehicles that transport people as it is the case that concerns us, as
well as the social alarm generated by such accidents, advise to prioritize control over this type of transport.” The news comes after it was revealed almost half of drivers in Malaga stopped on suspicion of drug driving test positive for having narcotics in their system, according to figures released by the Spanish Government. Minister for the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, has said the Government is now considering a series of measures to combat the rising problem. He explained one option being explored is referring drivers who commit two or more drink or drug offences in under two years to health professionals to determine whether they have an addiction problem before they regain their licence. Police carried out 1,468 tests last year, 609 of which confirmed drug use, a total of 41.4%. The most commonly detected was cannabis at 60.92%, followed by cocaine at 24.46%, and then amphetamines at 6.36%, methamphetamines at 5.91% and opioids at 2.29%. The figures also showed the number of tests carried out in recent years had grown significantly from 77 in 2012 and 2013 to 1,021 in 2014 and 2,318 in 2015. Conversely, breathalyser tests carried to measure alcohol levels have dropped from 205,511 in 2012 to 132,145 last year.
Fake sexual assault claim uncovered A 42-YEAR-OLD Colombian woman has been arrested in Malaga for filing a false police report claiming her two mobile phones were stolen in a sexual assault.
The woman had told officers she had been approached by men in a vehicle in the Gaudalhorce estate, who attempted to sexually as-
sault her and stole her handbag, which contained two phones. Officers claim they discovered the woman’s crime after finding she had used her phone later in the day she said it was stolen. the woman had used her phone later that day. It has not been revealed why the woman made up the offence.
Crackdown on street vendors BENALMADENA’S Council has launched a campaign in collaboration with the Department of Commerce to prevent illegal street vending. The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, has revealed a series of leaflets in several languages have been distributed in the most heavily visited tourist areas raising awarenss of the problem. He explained, “we are aware that illegal street vending is a social problem and we think it is vital to involve residents and tourists in finding a solution, because illegal vending does not benefit the seller or the buyer.” Mayor Navas said the council is considering a series of proposals to counteract the practice, inclusing setting up legal markets. Illegal vending continues to be a problem across the Costa del Sol despite Malaga Council’s efforts to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco at this year’s Malaga feria. The council this year installed an authorised tobacconist to crack down on the problem. The retailer, located in
the Real de la Feria, has attracted large crowds of smokers, although some illegal street vendors continue to trade, according to media reports. Head of Security at Malaga Council, Mario Cortes, said although not many police officers are brought in to deal with the problem, more measures have been put in place to stop the sale of illegal tobacco this year, leading to 200 packets of cigarettes being confiscated.
Feria stab victim recovering A 30-YEAR-OLD man injured in a knifing at the Malaga feria is making good progress, according to media reports. The man remains in Intensive Care (ICU) at the Malaga Regional Hospital but is now breathing without medical intervention and is expected to be moved out of the ICU. The stab victim received multiple stab wounds to his neck, chest and abdomen at around 10pm at the feria between Postigo de Arance and Calle Carreteria. At last year’s feria, police confiscated 21 knives and seized 417 narcotic substances. This year, the Local Police will carry out an average of 448 duties daily to avoid any incidents, while 346 members of the National Police will also be on hand in addition to the 900 members working in the city normally.

Green project saves €14,500 in fuel by Jemima Roberts MALAGA cleaning company Limasa has saved thousands of Euros in a pilot scheme to improve fuel efficiency in its vehicles. The project has seen Limasa using 34 volunteer drivers to trial the new technology, which uses the Canubus system to monitor emissions data, saving 5.5 per cent of fuel across its 12 cars. The scheme, which was launched in 2014 alongside technology company
AND and involved six cars, was extended in 2016 to 12 vehicles, in a collaboration deal with Vatia. According to the City Council, fuel efficiency results are expected to improve as the scheme continues. Currently CO2 savings are thought to have reached 10.1 per cent, event though vehicles increased their speed by an average of 1.7 per cent. This resulted in 25,3000 kilograms of CO2 savings, equating to the amount of oxygen produced by 2,100 trees in one year. Limasa claimed the project
has also increased driver safety as control of occupational hazards was increased. The company explained it is now considering expanding the number of vehicles in the scheme to 50, which would reportedly save €47,250 and 177,000 tons of CO2 a year. The Canubus system allows drivers to modify their driving habits, including acceleration and braking, in response to data, allowing them to maintain the most efficient speed for their route.
Nine arrested over knife fight THE NATIONAL POLICE have made further arrests after a seafront knife fight in Fuengirola left four wounded. The victims, aged between 21 and 29, were hospitalised with knife wounds after a fight broke out at around 6am on Calle Martinez Catena. The nine arrested are said to be of Spanish and Maghreb nationalities. National Police officers initially arrested eight people and did not out the possibility of further arrests after the fracas. Of the four in hospital, a twenty-one-year-old is expected to live but remains the most seriously injured after he received deep stab wounds to his neck and forearm. The other three
received injuries to various parts of their body but are not considered to be in a serious condition. Local and National Police officers, as well as health workers, attended the scene after receiving several calls reporting the fight, finding several injured people on the promenade before transferring them to the emergency room of the Costa del Sol Hospital. The National Police have started an investigation into the fight but have already identified the identities of those involved and are now working out each person’s involvement, as well as what started the confrontation and whether any other weapons, including bottles, were used.

The Lebrel Lighting Studio
A secret hideout from the hustle and bustle Abellanas to access the space. “In this case we are not referring to an idyllic hut you would find in the middle of the woods but rather to tiny spaces recovered from the city itself, where you can hide from the city’s hectic pace,” Abellanas said. “These are locations that due to their architecture, location or size have become useless. People hardly notice when walking by.” Have you spotted the secret hideout?

SELF-TAUGHT Spanish designer Fernando Abellanas has installed a novel studio beneath a graffiti-covered bridge in Valencia, that includes shelving, seating, and even a sleeping space. Abellanas, who designs furniture and lighting under the studio name Lebrel, created the small timberand metal-framed hut in just two weeks and made use of the concrete infrastructure to form a roof and walls for the hideaway. He prefers not to reveal its exact location within the city, but said he is often drawn to design huts for neglected spaces. “I feel a great attraction for this type of place and sometimes I make interventions in them. I depend a lot on the conditions offered by the place,” he told architecture, interiors and design magazine Dezeen. “It is a personal intervention that tries to put value in these type of spaces. It is also about recovering those sensations of the huts we used to make as small ones. To stay isolated but at the same time close to our A SECRET house, the city.” NEVER TO BE TOLD: The structure makes use of a pair of concrete beams The hideout beneath the bridge deck as the runners for a set of is reportedly wheels that allow the studio to be moved using a hand part of a crank. collection of spaces The structure can be rolled along the beams to join a column, which is fitted with wooden shelving, seating Abellanas has planned and bedding, or towards the top of a bank that allows

Spanish actress to play key role in new cutting edge crime drama FAMOUS SPANISH actress, Myr Garrido, known for her roles in films such as Love and Other Misfortunes (2013), The Sonata of Silence (2016) and more recently Ikaro (2017) is making headlines in Hollywood.
She has just been chosen to play a key supporting role in a new and cutting-edge TV series about crime and espionage called Smoking Gun written by award-winning British writer and producer Sutish Sharma, who previously worked for the BBC. The role played by Myr is that of a heroic and passionate character named Marie Adelmo, a secret agent working for the Spanish Intelligence services during the 80s; during a covert mission, she uncovers an alliance between the CIA and international drug traffickers. The series, which is being co-produced by Wanda Halcyon Television, Memphis Writers, New Street Pictures, Un Nouveau Jour, FX International Network and Access Entertainment, follows the FBI’s fictional investigation
into the murder of a civil rights activist in Los Angeles during the turbulent eighties. The case forces the protagonist, a world-weary FBI agent, to travel to Spain and Nicaragua eventually to the door of the Central Intelligence Agency and a connection to drug trafficking in Los Angeles through cartels working in Spain. “We are very excited about the ‘Smoking Gun’ series and hope to have production underway in October of 2017 and we are delighted to have Myr Garrido in this key female role. She reminds us of a young Meryl Streep,” said Pat Andrew, executive producer of Halcyon and former Aaron Spelling executive. The production will be shot in Spain, Los Angeles and Warner Brothers Studios.
Spain grants Turkish government critic conditional release A critic of Turkey’s government, arrested in Spain at Turkey’s request, has been granted conditional release. German-Turkish writer Dogan Akhanli has written extensively about human rights in Turkey. He usually lives in Germany, where his arrest is seen as politically motivated and Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticised Turkey over the case. Mr Akhanli was detained last Saturday in the city of Granada, where he was reportedly on holiday. The arrest was carried out on an Interpol ‘red notice’ - a request to arrest a wanted individual for extradition. The request is made by national police forces, and it does not indicate the person is wanted by Interpol itself. Mrs Merkel, speaking at a televised forum with voters, welcomed Mr Akhanli’s release but warned Turkey against misusing Interpol to go after its critics. Mr Akhanli, 60, has written about the killing in 2007 of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, and the 1915 killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks which was labelled as genocide by the German parliament last year. Large numbers of journalists have been jailed in Turkey since a failed coup last year, and news outlets critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have been shut down or taken over. Tens of thousands of people, including academics and government officials, have also faced arrest.

Changing lane by Jemima Roberts THE PLANNED remodelling of Avenida Carlota Alessandri in Torremolinos will mean eliminating two road lanes, it has been announced. The project, which has already started on the avenue which is one of Torremolinos’ main roads, will see a cycle lane created as well as additional parking, while four lanes of traffic will be reduced to two. Pedestrian areas near Hotel Las Palomas and on the intersection of Calles Aladino and La Luna have also been widened amidst criticicm from residents over the removal of 80 ficus and 50 palm trees. The council has rebuffed concerns, however, with first deputy mayor, Maribel Tocon, explaining the project has the backing of locals, saying the avenue
will become an “accessible and pleasant street which will be able to be enjoyed by pedestrians and drivers, where traffic will be slowed down and pavements and cycle routes will be improved.” A roundabout on the way to Torremolinos in Benalmadena’s Avenida Antonio Machado has also faced criticism after a series of accidents were reported at the site. Residents had claimed the roundabout, which has been partially fenced-off, should be demolished, but it will now be narrowed instead after one motorist was hospitalised with a leg injury caused by an crash at the site. The council voted unanimously to keep the roundabout and simply changing its layout after it emerged demolishing would mean returning funding for the project to the Provincial Council. Oscar Ramundo,
No Room: Councils worldwide try to balance increased bike lanes and reduced car space Councillor for Urban Planning, said the site “has not been put to use because it suffers from some design flaws that were noticed once the work was finished,” confirming it will be modified, “to avoid having to return the subsidy granted by the Provincial Council for its construction”. The news come after Councillor Beatriz Olmedo wounded a motorist after making an illegal manoeuvre on the roundabout, changing lane from one heading towards Fuengirola to one to Torremolinos. the roundabout be demolished following several accidents, however the party do not have representation in the council anymore after three of their councillors were expelled, leaving the governing parties free to push through the vote to modify the site unanimously. Initial plans included restricting cars and taxis at the entrance to the roundabout, however this was discounted after councillors decided the area running from the Sunset Beach hotel to Torremolinos was so busy the move would cause large jams.

FUENGIROLA’S COUNCIL led by the Partido Popular (PP) has rejected a proposal by opposing party Ciudadanos to install awnings in the municipalities playgrounds. The suggestion came after temperatures reached around 76 degrees in some children’s parks over the summer. The PP’s Maria Jesus Pascual voted against the change, saying health agencies already advised parents not to allow their children to play between the hottest hours of 2pm and 5pm. According to one publication, however, some of the temperatures measured were read at 11am, causing concern playgrounds were too hot at most hours. A spokesman for another party, Javier Toro, added, “we must take into account the negative effects of the sun’s rays, since in Malaga we have twice as many cases of skin cancer as in the rest of the country.”
How much? Concern about young people’s pay FIGURES based on data from the Spanish tax authorities have revealed the amount of money young people are earning. The study reveals that, on average, a young person between the ages of 18 and 25
earns €440 a month equating to €5,280 annually and lower than the average across Spain. Despite the fact that there have been many signs that the Spanish economy is improving – which has filtered through to the provinces – unemploy-
ment among the young up to 25-years-old is still 41 per cent, and when many do find work it is only part time. In the first quarter of 2017, 51.60% of the 104,066 temporary contracts issued in Alicante province for the under 30s were
for part-time work and mostly for four hours a day. Many of the contracts only lasted for seven days. In total, 113,228 contracts were signed for that age group of which only 9,172 were of permanent and indefinite.

Giving waste the ‘wow’ factor by Sally Underwood
IT´S NO secret that plastic waste is a growing global issue. And to help paint a picture of just how large the issue is, Luzinterruptus, the anonymous Spanish art collective, designed a maze of plastic waste in the middle of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The 170-metre long, three-metre high installation was created from approximately 15,000 plastic bottles collected from nearby universities, hospitals and other institutions over the course of a month. It was built as part of the city’s fourth Centennial Celebration of the Plaza Mayor and served as an extension of a similar project that Luzinterruptus designed in Poland in 2014. The installation also included a number of intricate paths and narrow passages that forced visitors to keep guessing the way out. The interior featured no reference points and the smell of plastic enhanced the overall experience of the installation, according to Luzinterruptus. The group hopes that its projects will help raise awareness around the importance of recycling before the issue of plastic waste takes a turn for the worse. Luzinterruptus is heading to Las Vegas and Bordeaux, France, next, where it will create works of art made from plastic bags. The group plans on heading back to Madrid in October to design a larger project from 60,000 plastic bottles.

She will be called – ‘Angela Merkel Muhammed’
A SYRIAN refugee family in Germany has named their newly born baby girl Angela Merkel Muhammed out of gratitude to the chancellor for her open-door asylum policy in 2015, hospital officials said. “The first name of the girl is Angela, the second is Merkel. With this decision, the parents wanted to show their thankfulness to the chancellor,” said a spokeswoman for St. Franziskus Hospital in the western German city of Muenster. Angela Merkel Muhammed was born
on August 16 and was the parents’ fifth child. Her mother, Asia Faray and father, Khalid Muhammed, arrived in Germany with their then four children at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015. It is not the first time that a refugee family in Germany has named its newly born baby this way. In February 2015, Angela Merkel Ade was born in a hospital in the northern city of Hanover. Her mother had migrated from Ghana to Germany.

Trendy old dude or mutton dressed as lamb? by
Barry Duke
BACK IN 1993, author Stephen Fried, in his biography of supermodel Gia Carangi, coined the word “fashionista”. His wife loathed it, but the word quickly gained international currency and actually made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Well, this month I decided to invent a variation: fashionpensionista. It describes people of a certain age who, for better or worse – mainly worse – think they can dress as they did when The Kinks sang their “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” on their 1965 album, Kinkdom. The word came to mind when a fella – knocking on 80 I would guess – sat next to me at bus stop in Benidorm. He was a cerise horror show, dressed from head to toe in varying shades of pink. Even the straps of his watches – two on each wrist – had luminous pink straps. I blame the fashion retailers. They believe that if you’re not in the 18-30 age range you have two choices: either wriggle your way into their skimpy gear, or go trawling though charity shop or vintage store racks in search of clothing people died in five decades ago. Back in the day, there was none of this nonsense when I was living in London. You hit 50, and immediately became a customer at any number of outfitters catering exclusively to mature gentlemen. You swaggered into Burton or Dunn & Co looking like a middle-aged Mick Jagger and emerged in a brown tweed outfit, looking (and acting) just like your dad. At a stroke, your broad mind and narrow hips changed places, and the outfits you now wore acted as a kind of warning to upstarts that that you were Not a Man to be Messed With. You could get on a train, bus or the tube, and fearlessly order yobs to take their feet off the seats – and they’d meekly do so. But nowadays if a man of a certain age wearing skinny jeans and looking like a potato with cocktail stirrers for legs tried to exert authority over an anti-social teenager, he’d more than likely end up intensive care, taking his meals through a straw. Although society back then demanded that you look and act your age – meaning you had to wear your hair a certain length and buy shoes resembling Cornish pasties from Freeman, Hardy and Willis – many defied convention by keeping up with the latest trends without ever looking ridiculous. I was one of those rebels. It took some effort, mind, to retain the sort of boyish figure one needs for trendy gear, and I spent countless hours in a gym, from my 50 to mid-60s, to do just that. It clearly worked. A few years back I was standing outside Gatwick airport’s departure lounge puffing on a an e-fag when a young Frenchman approached me. “Are you in the movies, or maybe an artist?” he asked. Nope, I replied. Why do you ask?” His answer: “You’re one cool dude. I sure hope I look like you when I reach your age.” “As cool as Samuel L Jackson?” “Oh yeah, man, JUST as cool as Jackson”.
About 18 months ago I had the pleasure of doing a photoshoot for a fellow fashionpensionista, a gay humanist and writer whose scriptwriting work included BBC radio plays and television scripts for the BBC and ITV – including Doctor Who, Fraggle Rock, The Slide and The Adventures of Black Beauty. Victor Pemberton, who had settled in Spain a few years back with his lifelong partner, David Spenser, came to public attention when he announced last year that he was about to drive solo from the Costa Blanca to the Arctic to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity for injured ex-service personnel. Although in his 80s, Victor looked far, FAR younger, and dressed and partied like a teenager … right until the beginning of August this year when he fell ill. He died in his sleep aged 85 on August 13. Farewell, Victor, you were certainly Benidorm’s coolest old dude, and we miss you terribly. Victor Pemberton R.I.P. 13/08/2017
Fire hazard
RESIDENTS in Malaga have raised concerns over an abandoned lot on Calle Flamencos where they say dry vegetation has built up, posing a fire risk. Local, Emilio Zulaica, told a publication “It’s sad to see how abandoned it has become. The worst thing is it’s very dangerous with dry shrubbery and fire could hit our homes at any time.” Mr Zulaica added the rest of his neighbourhood was
regularly cleared to prevent fire. He complained, “this is not a question of aesthetics but of security which is why something should be done.” Malaga

IT IS beyond belief that within 24-hours of the latest terrorist outrages, two in Spain, the Merkel regime warns Libya that they must not obstruct the flow of illegal migrants to the shores of the European Union. If Britain declared war on Hitler’s Germany in 1939 for taking liberties with border control why aren’t we bringing the current German regime to its knees? Perhaps Tommy Atkins and Antoine should again shoulder arms. Whilst still reeling with shock at the loss of life in Barcelona and a near similar recurrence in Cambrils, Germany’s Federal government issues a stark warning to the Libyan government to not hinder the flow of migrants to Europe. It is the practice of EU funded non-government organisations (NGO) to assist people smugglers by intercepting and towing their human cargoes to European ports. EU governments and George Soros assisted ‘charities’, instead of discouraging Africa’s economic migrants, many radicalised by Islamic teachings, help the migrants to complete their passage to Europe. The Libyan government, picking up the pieces of NATO’s regime changing fiasco, now want to establish control over their own territorial waters. This is a perfectly reasonable initiative. Libyan control means that non-Libyan vessels, such as those funded by the EU and George Soros, are no longer allowed to enter Libya’s territorial waters. The NATO deposed Muammar Gadhafi was particularly good at protecting Europe from the refugee tsunami. His navy intercepted migrants and returned them to Africa.

According to Die Welt, the move has infuriated the German government, which has yet to say what action they will take to occupy Libyan waters. Many migrants fleeing poverty use Libya to reach Europe choose the so-called central Mediterranean migration route. According to European border agency Frontex, the Libya – Europe route saw almost 100,000 illegal border crossings between January and July this year. Why is it difficult for so many people to connect the
refugee and terrorism crisis with American-inspired conflicts that have set the entire Middle East on fire? There is such a term known as ‘cause and effect’; it is high time that the 508 million misgoverned peoples of the European Union woke up the fact that the enemy is not in Moscow, Pyongyang or Beijing but is lurking malevolently in Washington DC, Berlin and Brussels. Germany, on this occasion, seems intent on driving the Arab scimitar and African panga deeper into Europa’s back. Is it Hitler’s revenge?

It’s all in the Name by
Colin Bird
I WAS watching Vintage TV recently and it featured music from the 60’s and 70’s as it often does on a Friday night, and I realised that although the Americans are really big in naming bands after actual locations in the US, the Brits have always gone out of their way to avoid it. I also realised how sad I am for watching Vintage TV every Friday. The Yanks have the likes of Chicago, Boston and even the grand, all encompassing title of America in the US lexicon of group names, not to mention: New York Dolls; Kansas; Ohio Players and Detroit Spinners amongst others. I suppose it’s understandable when you look at the names of British towns and cities. Somehow Bournemouth, South Shields and Ramsbottom don’t seem to lend themselves to the naming of an alcohol, drug and sex fuelled band from the rock and roll netherworld. You just might get away with Pratts Bottom if you are a heavy metal outfit, but it’s borderline. There was only one English band of any consequence I can recall that stuck its head above the parapet and gave itself a place name, although I have to say, ASIA is a bit of a
cop out when you have to go to the other side of the world for inspiration. Sure we have had Portishead (a place near Bristol) who enjoyed a degree of success. But they were from the 90’s, so don’t really count. And can you believe The Leyton Buzzards who had one minor hit in the 70’s with ‘Saturday Night’. Remember it? No me neither. Scotland is the home of Glasgow based band Texas, which to the best of my knowledge is not an area in that city. Still, The Gorbals or Pollokshields would have perhaps sounded a tad un-cool, so good luck to them I say. In recent times the Yanks have even had the gall to form a band called Halifax. Halifax! And they are not even from the other Halifax in Canada let alone Yorkshire, but from Thousand Oaks, California for goodness sake. How did we let that one slip through our fingers? English groups took the pop world by storm during those heady 60’s days, but I can’t help wondering if things might have been different if instead of The Rolling Stones, Beatles and Kinks, the names of Dartford Tunnel, The Wavertree Four and Muswell Hill had been adopted.

Are you putting enough into your pension? THE 13TH annual Scottish Widows Retirement Report reveals that, despite the success of auto-enrolment – 80 per cent of 22-29 year olds are paying something into a pension – 70 per cent of them are not putting away enough. This puts at risk their ability to achieve their desired income of just over £23,000 a year for a comfortable retirement.
The report found that average contributions are £184 a month (including employer contributions), meaning they can expect an annual pension of just £15,200 including the current State Pension. A 30-year-old contributing the current minimum of 1 per cent to their workplace pension (matched by their employer) will achieve an income in retirement of £9,734. And even when the minimum contributions rise to 8 per cent (employee and employer combined) in 2019, they will only achieve an annual retirement income of £14,047. This is a shortfall of almost £9,000 on expectations. There is also evidence that more people will begin to opt out of pension schemes as contributions increase through autoescalation from April 2018. When 22-29 year olds were asked if the planned increases would affect how they save, less than half (48 per cent) committed to staying enrolled.
The later you start the harder it gets. If someone starts saving into a pension at 25 years of age, they would need to put aside £293 each month to reach a £23,000 annual income. Not starting to save until 35, monthly savings would need to jump to £443 and at 45 this would be £724. For someone who left retirement saving to their 50s, they would need to put away £1,445 a month to enjoy a £23,000 annual pension. Catherine Stewart, Retirement Expert at Scottish Widows, said: “There is no doubt auto enrolment has been a success in kick-starting the savings habit for millions – but it is not a silver bullet. Auto-enrolment may well be lulling people into a false sense of security that they are putting away enough for a comfortable retirement. “For many, that is simply not the case; particularly given retirement is looking more expensive than ever. With one in every 12 private rental sector tenants now a pensioner,
First-time buyers on the rise ON A non-seasonally adjusted basis, UK Finance data shows that mortgage lending in June rose, First-time buyers borrowed £5.9bn, up 26 per cent on the previous month and 9 per cent on June 2016. This equated to 36,000 loans, up 22 per cent month-on-month and 6 per cent year-on-year. Those that moved home borrowed £7.8bn, up 26 per cent on May and 15 per cent year-on-year. This equated to 36,500 loans, up 24 per cent month-on-month and 9 per cent compared to a year ago. Paul Smee, Head of Mortgages at UK Finance, commented: “June’s figures show a busy month in the mortgage market, with home movers having their highest monthly activity levels for over a year and
an especially high number of loans for first time buyers. Buy-to-let activity remains subdued compared to its 2015 peak but consistent month-to-month since stamp duty changes in April 2016. “But there are also signs of a softening market and we are not anticipating that this performance will be sustained in the second half of 2017. A slightly lop-sided market could well show some growth in house purchase lending but alongside reduced remortgage and buy-to-let activity.” Affordability metrics for first-time buyers saw the typical loan size increase from £137,000 in May to £139,000 in June. The average household income increased to £41,000 from £40,500. The average amount borrowed by home movers in the UK increased to £180,000 from £177,000 the previous month, while the average home mover household income increased month-on-month from £54,900 to £55,200. Buy-to-let activity was driven by remortgage lending which accounted for over two thirds of total lending. Buy-to-let house purchase and remortgage activity in June remained consistent to monthly levels seen since the change on stamp duty on second properties introduced in April last year.
‘Generation Rent’ is headed for a more expensive retirement than previous generations.”
Arrears and repossessions down
THE NUMBER of mortgages in arrears of 2.5 per cent or more of the outstanding balance declined to 88,200 in the second quarter of this year, the lowest level since at least 1994 when this run of data began. The total was 5 per cent lower than in the first quarter (92,600) and amounted to 0.8 per cent of the more than 11 million mortgages outstanding in the UK.
The second quarter also saw a fall in the number of mortgages across all arrears bands, including those with the highest levels of arrears. In the same period, the number of mortgages with arrears of 10 per cent or more of the outstanding balance totalled 25,200, down 5 per cent from 26,500 in the preceding quarter. This brought a welcome end to a period of five successive quarters in which this figure had edged upwards from 23,400 in the first quarter of 2016. The number of properties taken into possession also declined in the second quarter from 1,900 to 1,800 (accounting for 0.02 per cent of all mortgages). The total was the same
as in the final quarter of last year, and is the lowest figure since quarterly data was first published in 2008. In line with a trend that has become established in recent data, the rate of buy-to-let arrears was lower than arrears in the owner-occupied sector, although the buy-to-let possession rate was higher. This is because lenders extend a high level of forbearance to owneroccupiers to help them overcome any period of financial difficulty and stay in their homes wherever possible. Commenting on the data, UK finance head of mortgages Paul Smee said: “These figures show that the overwhelming majority of borrowers are managing their mortgage payments successfully, and many of those who have experienced some difficulty in the past are able to recover their financial position. “Borrowers are being helped by low interest rates, but mortgage costs are certain to rise at some stage. It is important therefore for customers to plan ahead and consider how their finances would be affected in those circumstances.”

Take a dip in a saltwater pool Photo credit: wikipedia
IT WAS supposed to be a community swimming pool, but many people stayed away because they couldn’t tolerate the biting, nose-curdling odour of chlorine. Others experienced breathing and skin problems. So a community centre in the USA, converted its 65,000-gallon chlorine pool into a saltwater pool. People who had stayed away are now coming back, getting exercise and therapy, while socialising with others. Across the country, traditional chlorine pools are being converted into saltwater pools, sometimes called saline pools.
2. Water that’s gentle on skin, eyes, nose and hair. Saltwater pools have approximately onetenth the salinity of ocean water and about one-third the salinity of human tears, with no unpleasant chlorine smell. 3. A more environmentally friendly approach. Routine pool maintenance doesn’t involve the handling and storage of manufactured chlorine and lessens the need for other potentially hazardous chemicals. But how do they work? Saltwater pools use a generator to convert the salt into mild chlorine that keeps the pool free of harmful bacteria. This chlorine is added to the water at a constant rate, displacing the bad smell and burning irritation we normally associate with chlorine and maintaining the right amount. Once the chlorine sanitises the pool it converts back to salt. The process continues, over and over again, conserving the salt and keeping sanitiser levels balanced.
Swimmers noticed the difference right away after the switch, making their pool experience much more enjoyable. The new system also meant softer water without harsh chemicals that sometimes required a shower to wash off. Then advantages of a saltwater pool over that of a traditional chemical pool are: 1. Simplified, more convenient maintenance. Saltwater pool owners don’t have to buy, transport, store and handle hazardous chlorine chemicals. This saves time and money.
NO MORE TEARS: A swimming pool worth its salt.
The other good news for homeowners is that pool salt is far cheaper than traditional chlorine. The initial construction and installation cost of an electrolytic converter is very small and easily made up in maintenance savings. Even converting an existing chlorine pool to saltwater pool can pay off quickly.

Herbs to keep you busy in the autumn
STUNNING: Winter herbs can be used to create great looking and smelling gardens
The end of summer doesn’t have to mean the end of your gardening enjoyment, even if you don’t have the time or climate for a full plot of food plants. Herbs are perfect autumn crops; they are prolific growers, can satisfy your desire for fresh, garden-grown greens and are one of the easiest ways to elevate your recipes from so-so to so good! Plus, they’re ready to harvest and growing your own will make a dent in your grocery bill. Multiple factors will influence your choice of herbs, including autumn temperatures, where you live, and your taste in seasonings. You’ll want to choose herbs that like cooler weather, such as parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, mint, chives, lavender and oregano. They’re all
prolific producers and some, like mint and rosemary, are especially easy to grow. Herbs need at least four to six hours of natural light per day to grow indoors, so choose a sunny spot near a window where they’ll be protected from drafts and any cold. South and southwest-facing windows will give you the most natural light throughout the day. Windows facing north won’t provide enough sunlight. If you really love rosemary, you may be tempted to try to plant the largest pot appropriate for your kitchen, but stick with manageable-sized pots that will fit better indoors, allow you to keep your herbs more organized, and still produce plenty of yield.
Be sure to choose pots that have good drainage and always use a premium potting mix. Any type of plant growing in a pot needs water, and herbs are no exception. You’ll need to keep a close eye on your herb plants’ watering needs. Remember, dry topsoil is not an indication plants need water. A quick and easy test is to stick your finger, or a pencil, into the soil right where the stem enters the soil. If the soil is moist at 1.5 to 2 inches deep, do not water. If dry, it’s time to water! Always water in the morning, at soil level and avoid watering the leaves, as bacteria can breed in cool, wet, damp and dark conditions, like night time.

home and garden
The Chelsea Physic Garden was established as the Apothecaries’ Garden in London, England, in 1673 and is the second oldest botanical garden in Britain. The garden is an oasis of tranquility which has been used to grow and demonstrate medicinal and useful plants for nearly 350 years. The Garden has had a wide impact around the World, playing a key role in introducing the rubber industry to Malaysia and cotton to the Southern US. Perhaps most significant was the establishment of the tea industry in India. The use of glasshouses at Chelsea Physic Garden has allowed gardeners to cultivate many challenging and exotic species. RTN spoke exclusively with experts at Chelsea Physic Garden to find out their top 5 plant picks that thrive in a Mediterranean climate: Pelargonium ‘Surcouf’ - glorious in terracotta pots grouped together, pelargoniums require little watering and they love heat and sunshine which makes them the perfect plants for the Mediterranean, particularly on a small balcony or terrace. Be sure to dead head regularly and feed once a week with high potash (tomato) feed to encourage a
better and longer flowering season. There is a huge variety of pelargoniums to choose from and they come with all sorts of leaf shapes (often fragrant) and colours. Pelargonium ‘Surcouf’ has fantastic lipstick pink flowers which last month after month throughout summer. Pelargonium Sidoides - this very dainty species of pelargonium/geranium has circular, crinkled, silver-grey-green leaves and clusters of small, deep magenta almost black - flowers on fine, long, wiry stems. A plant native to coastal South Africa, In Western medicine, the red roots of the plant have been used to treat the common cold and acute bronchitis. Olive Trees - the glorious shade a tree provides in a hot climate is very welcome. Olive trees are almost synonymous with the Mediterranean as they are useful for crops of olives and love the hot dry, conditions. Pinus Canariensis (Canary Island Pine) - an elegant pine tree and great for the Mediterranean as its one of the most drought-tolerant pines, the Pinus Canariensis is a popular ornamental tree in warmer climates. Take care if planting in a garden as a Pinus Canariensis is can get
large if not kept in check. Lavender - long considered a multi-tasker in the world of herbal medicine, lavender’s oil is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, so much so that it was used in the First World War as an antiseptic to treat wounds. The pale lilac or white coloured flowers produce a wonderful calming smell and its far reaching uses aid bites, burns, tiredness and tensions. Growing lavender is simple with a dry and sunny soil; it will grow happily in a bed or even a border. Rosemary - a great companion to lavender as they both enjoy the same conditions. Like many Mediterranean herbs, rosemary and lavender are perfect for providing fragrant planting around a seating area or near paths. Chelsea Physic Garden continues to play a significant role in education, running a range of courses for adults and activities for over 5000 school children a year. It also retains its medicinal plant display – one of the largest in the World, along with extensive ethnobotanic, useful, edible and conservation plant collections. How to grow a pallet garden
DON’T BREAK THE BANK: Pallets can be picked up free from a variety of sources
WITH so many people becoming more conscious of repurposing rather than impacting on landfill with unnecessary waste, gardening with wooden pallets has never been more popular. Moving from a creative idea to a garden trend, today, gardeners are using pallets for planting everything from herbs to succulents. We’ve all seen them, used wooden pallets leant up beside markets and shops, waiting to go to the Ecoparque. Then someone thought of bringing those wooden pallets into the garden and planting veggies, flowers or other plants between the bars. Gardening with wooden pallets is an easy and inexpensive way to create a vertical planting area when space is tight. If you are wondering how to grow a pallet garden, all you need is a roll of landscaping paper, sandpaper, a staple gun and staples, hammer and nails and some potting soil. And of course, your plants! Follow these instructions to get started: 1. Sand down any rough spots on your pallet. If the back of your pallet doesn’t have much support, find some scrap wood, roughly 3 to 4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick (or the thickness of the rest of your supports) and cut it
down to the width of your pallet. Using two nails on each side, add supports so they are roughly even down the back of your pallet. 2. Double or triple up your landscaping fabric and begin the stapling fun. Staple fabric along the back, bottom and sides of the pallet, taking care at the corners to fold in the fabric so no soil will spill out. 3. Lay the pallet flat and pour potting soil through slats, pressing soil down firmly. Leave enough room to begin planting your succulents. 4. Begin planting, starting at the bottom of the pallet and ending at the top. Make sure soil is firmly packed in each layer as you move up. Add more soil as needed so that plants are tightly packed at the end. 5. Water your wall garden thoroughly and let it remain horizontal for 1 to 2 weeks to allow plants to take root. After 1 to 2 weeks, you can set it upright. Use your creativity to think of different pallet gardening ideas to try. You can start vegetable gardening with wooden pallets, create a fragrance garden or grow small succulents. Once you’ve started planting in wooden pallets in the garden, many other ideas will come to you. DIY pallet gardening is fun, and takes up very little room.

If you lost money when a property developer went under, help may be at hand This is where Spanish Legal Reclaims could be very helpful as they are prepared to review each case on its merits and if there appears to be a good chance of recovering funds, they will take on the case on a ‘no win no fee’ basis. Spanish bureaucracy is known to be slow and complicated so this companies legal experts and financial advisers will have to undertake a great deal of work to establish liability, especially as many as 60 per cent of all who lost money paid their deposits to lawyers rather than directly to the banks. Happily however, the company has established an almost fool proof method of tracing the funds even if deposits were made more than 10 years ago and in most cases should be able to determine which bank was involved in the transaction. To date, acting for a number of people from different countries, the company - which has experts fluent in most languages – has already won several cases in court although the decisions are being appealed by the banks. As the legal system in Spain is slow, they can’t boast large numbers of cash refunds although they have had a small number of successes when the banks overlooked making an appeal but they are confident that in the majority of cases, a first decision by a court will be upheld on appeal. Clearly the company is confident in its abilities as it is prepared to undertake all of the work without any charge to customers and only benefits if the case is won! Banks generally don’t like to admit they are in the wrong and can afford to employ the best lawyers but provided that the law is in favour of the victim and importantly those acting for that victim know what they are doing, the likelihood of success is great.
Luis Cuervo CEO Spanish Legal Reclaims
Large numbers of people including many expatriates lost money due to inefficiencies by banks who were supposed to safeguard their deposits placed with construction companies. FOR YEARS it was believed that these deposits were lost forever but a decision made by the Spanish government recognised that there was a serious problem and has made banks culpable in many cases. Spanish Legal Reclaims has consulted a number of highly experienced lawyers and financial experts to study the effects of a law which gives those who have lost money when placing deposits on properties a possibility to recover their losses. When the market turned in 2007, one of the greatest areas of loss was in the property construction business and companies all across Spain went into liquidation without
completing the work leaving individuals out of pocket for amounts ranging from €20,000 to €200,000 or even more. The results were devastating for those who may have lost their life savings and who faced a future without any chance of recovering their money or their accommodation. Now however, tt has been decided that if a bank accepted a deposit in respect of a new build property, the bank had a responsibility to protect those funds by way of bank guarantees, separate insurance policies or placing the funds in escrow accounts. If the bank did this, then money would be safe but if they didn’t, then they can now be sued for a refund of that money.
Spanish Legal Reclaims wants to help those who have lost out and would be happy to review their case as well as explain eventual charges in the happy event that their claim on behalf of the client is successful. Anyone who has still not taken action to try to recover lost funds of this type would be well advised to visit www.spanishlegalreclaims.com or call them from the UK on 0845 680 3849 or from Spain 936 804 563.

Life
costa women
Samantha Bayley, a 25 year resident on the Costa del Sol ARRIVING in Torremolinos from the UK in 1992, Samantha (Sam) Bayley and her husband of two years Joe felt as if they had arrived home with one baby and another on its way. For them it was an easy process to move to Spain as Sam’s parents and grandparents were already living here as were Joe’s parents and things have progressed considerably since their arrival with six months advance rent paid. Now with five children (three girls and two boys), one grandchild and two thriving businesses between them, life has been good although they have both had to work hard to achieve their aims. Husband Joe is a kitchen designer and they started off at the boot fair in Fuengirola every weekend selling furniture and booking appointments but the business grew and they now have a showroom in La Cala de Mijas. Since they had a big family Sam’s primary focus had always been the children but she has always been involved in the bespoke paint side of Joe’s business. “As a result of joining Costa Women Business Breakfast meetings two and a half years ago I was inspired and realised that I could market what I’d always been doing and ‘have a go’ independently so The Painted Kitchen was born. There are a lot of perfectly sound kitchens in need of some professionally applied paint!” Sam explains. “I professionally spray paint or hand paint new kitchens, revamp new life into tired, worn out wooden kitchens and repaint bespoke kitchens and furniture. Almost any kitchen can be painted and re-loved with the minimum of disruption and for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

I also ‘rethunk junk’ and have a real passion for making things from pallets and reclaimed wood. Fixing things is a hobby and a trip to Bricomart is a real treat! “I also ‘rethunk junk’ and have a real passion for making things from pallets and reclaimed wood. Fixing things is a hobby and a trip to Bricomart is a real treat!” she continues. Jokingly adding “I think I speak Spanish though my children would probably laugh.” When asked if there was anything she doesn’t like about Spain Sam simply responds “We’ve lived here half our lives so safe to say we love it! I can’t think of anything I dislike enough to mention.” She is certainly very supportive of the Costa Women group saying “I first heard about Costa Women from fellow member Jill Burgess from Vida Natural Skincare whilst painting her kitchen cabinets. “I will always be grateful as I’ve met some fabulous women and formed supportive, collaborative business relationships. This is all because of the work Ali Meehan does tirelessly in connecting us all and I’m proud to be a member of her band of merry Costa Women. “Costa Women events are great for making friends and a wonderful platform for turning ideas into businesses, I shall always be grateful for all the support and camaraderie I’ve received. Every woman should join!”
Sam kindly agreed to answer a number of questions which hopefully will give an even greater insight into this long term Costa del Sol resident.

THE PLANNED Mijas Birra & Art festival due to be held in La Cala de Mijas last week has been postponed after complaints from residents. The craft beer event was suspended after both locals and opposition political parties criticised “deficiencies we found in its organisation.” The council has now clarified it has never been a sponsor or organiser or the event, and has expressed regret at its suspension, “especially for the losses to participants and organisers caused by the cancellation, as well as for the inconvenience caused to residents and locals.” The event, which was due to take place
over three days last weekend, would have seen a series of music performances as well as plenty of beer until 1 am each day. Pop, rock and soul performer, Yohan Diz and pop/rock act, Money Markers, were due to perform, as well as Tocata covers on Sunday. The event’s organisers billed the threeday fair as an “opportunity to taste the best craft beers from southern Spain and so much more,” promising, “gastronomy, art and live music every day to enjoy with your friends and family.”

learn spanish Understanding the Spanish beat
NO DOUBT you have rushed to this page this week in your anxiety to find out the answer to last week’s question – is the word “agua” masculine or feminine?
First let’s look at the evidence. The word ends in the letter “a” which makes it look feminine; also when we talk about cold water, for example we say “agua fría” which obviously suggests it is a feminine word. However, for “the water” we say “el agua”, using the masculine form “el” for “the”. This is very strange, and here are some other words that do the same thing. The word for “eagle” is “águila” which is the same for a male or female of the species. The word
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

seems to be feminine, confirmed by the fact that the plural is “las águilas”. And yet the singular, strangely is “el águila”. “El ama”, is another example of the same thing. We have “el ama de casa” the housewife, or “el ama de llaves” the housekeeper. Both of these jobs are associated with females, but this is not the point. “Ama” is a feminine word, using the masculine “el” for “the”. A further example is the word “hacha” meaning “axe”. The sharp axe is “el hacha afilada”. Another word that behaves in the same way is “el hambre” (hunger). Here we do not have an “a” ending to make us think it is feminine, but if you are very hungry you say “tengo mucha hambre”. And finally “el alma” the soul: “El Alma Herida” (the Injured Soul) is apparently the title of a very bad Mexican soap opera. Google is a wonderful thing. Before I unravel this great mystery, I will just mention that these particular feminine words also take “un” instead of “una” for “a” or “one”, so one housewife is “un ama de casa”. A context for this might be “there was one housewife and two nurses in the class” “había un ama de casa y dos enfermeras en la clase”. (Don’t forget though, that when you
Sing, Unburied, Sing A Novel by Jesmyn Ward IN JESMYN Ward’s first novel since her National Book Award–winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi’s past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers. Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drugaddicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is
simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she’s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie’s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward’s distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential contribution to American literature.

describe someone’s job using “ser” you don’t translate “a”: “soy ama de casa” - I am a housewife). To understand the reason for this strange phenomenon our first guess would probably be that it is because the words start with the letter “a” (agua, ama, alma, águila) or the sound “a” (hambre, hacha). However, this explanation doesn’t work as there are many words starting with “a” which do not behave in this way – “la actriz” (the actress), “la apertura” (the opening), “la hamaca” (hammock). Well, my friends, I will try your patience no longer, here is the answer. It is all to do with the “beat” or emphasis of the voice when speaking these words. In all of our key words the beat falls on the initial “a” sound (Ama, as opposed to hamAca). The issue of beat or stress and how words link together in speech is complex, but in this particular instance there is a fixed substitution of “la” for “el” in both spoken and written forms. You may think that this is not the most important or practical thing you have ever learnt about Spanish, and in one sense you may be right, but actually, we have just looked at one of the single most important things to understand about the Spanish language, and that is that where the “beat” falls in a word is of maximum importance in making yourselves understood.

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag
Kenny, I find it hard to believe in things that I cannot see. All this spiritual stuff doesn’t come to me and I am prepared to believe it if I can see something! Brenda C. Hi Brenda. Catch 22 here! If you believe then you will see, if you don’t then you won’t. All gnostic religions demand on belief forms. You are free to believe or not to believe, but these religions are founded on your faith and old stories from the past. Those with continued faith in Spirit do start a form of communication that leaves them well and truly knowing that there is something there; and that the soul continues long after Earthly life! They may see, but also feel and hear too such messages sent constantly. We can’t always see what we have to believe in. I have never been to Russia, but I have to believe it is there, although I have never seen it!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Trust puts you best in a position of power, which you have to assume to make it all happen for you this astrological year. Bold statements need to come from the heart and the soul if what you truly do want is to become what you get!
Mars takes a step forward towards planet Kora this week, shedding some new light on an old niggle. One part of you is saying you have to let bygones be bygones; but you are angry about the way things have panned out, and what has happened as a result. This may be a time to spill the beans and clear your way ahead. Feel free to do so!
Duel entries of Venus and Mercury this week bring you a great inner satisfaction. Since you love to share and be generous, it is now that you should be catching up with friends and relatives; since you seem to have had a lot on your plate just lately. Send out that message that will bring all together and send out your true message of love!
Hold back and look before you leap this week because there is something to be said for erring on the side of caution right now. Somebody moved the goalposts, but it wasn’t you and it can’t be your job to apologise on behalf of someone else. With things at sixes and sevens this could be a time to sit things out until the coast is really clear!
One step forward and another one straight back? This week take decisive action because something truly does have to be nipped in the bud. Whilst blame can be apportioned to the Ceres occlusion with Saturn, there is more in what is going on than meets the eye right now. Under your stance both these planets can and will deliver!
A change of location this week also brings up the prospects of another project; and you need something to get your teeth into right now. Spontaneity is the keyword for you when the going gets tough and the tough get going! End this month with renewed purpose and start just as you wish to continue to set a grounding precedent.
Not everyone around you is supporting you right now, and though they may have their reasons, these are not the actions of a true friend. Jupiter sextiles with Saturn midweek and this delays things somewhat. Saturn is really going all out to protect you, whilst a wealth of blessings sent from Jupiter can’t get to you just yet. Hang in there!
Big changes are afoot right now! Expect an overdue payoff, due to you because you have stuck to your guns despite all that has been going on. This week sees you in a very sociable phase, but even there be unafraid to take a risk when something feels as right as it will do! Expand your World, because the best of times for you is now.
All that glitters is not gold, and you are about to find this out! Last week’s tryst with Uranus your planetary leader, and Venus, has left some unfinished business that only you can deal with. Look to your opposing sign of Leo to see things from a different angle, because for you, for now, the grass truly is greener on a vastly distant shore!
Crab like actions are poised to snap and to bite. Hiding your anger is not an option right now, and neither should you be ensconced in that protective shell either! Moon magic intervenes on your behalf, but since you do not like yourself when you are surrounded by negative energy, this may take a little time to show to good effect.
Plagued by a conscious, this week is about coming to terms, and you have done nothing wrong. Whilst a midweek deal pays off, you have also come to a stage whereby those that cross you are not worth worrying about. Mars actions with Kora to set a date for something in the near future that could greatly and positively impact on you
All this indecision is having a very negative effect on you, and you need to charge that positive energy to get the right results just now. Tuning into yourself you can reveal the absolute truth of what it is wanted right now; otherwise what you are approaching is an unfair compromise, and really only the very last resort for you.

Returning to normal after knee surgery Most patients undergoing knee surgery want to know when they’ll be able to return to a pain-free, active lifestyle and do the things they once enjoyed before knee pain took over. Three months after surgery, most people have completely recovered and are able to return to many activities that were too painful or difficult previously. Once you’ve been cleared by your doctor, the safest way to restart activity after knee surgery is to find activities that avoid placing unnecessary stress on the now-repaired or even replaced joint. Here are three activities to help you move safely after knee surgery:
2. Dance. While you should avoid high-impact
3. Swim. Once the wound has healed, many people choose swimming as their exercise of choice as it’s not a weight-bearing activity and therefore reduces stress to the joints. If your knee is still a bit tender, opt for water aerobics or pool walking. Want to mix it up? You can feel safe doing many other recommended activities such as yoga, golf, bowls, aerobics or sailing. If you have experience prior to your surgery doing more intense activities, your doctor may give you the go-ahead to resume them. Whichever activity you choose, remember that rushing into activities before you’ve recovered sufficiently may put you at risk for complications, so be sure to check with your doctor first before resuming any activity after knee surgery.

1. Walk (don’t run!). Experts say walking outside your home three to five times each day is one of the best ways to regain your knee strength. While you may need to adjust the length of your step and speed, you will be able to spend more time walking for exercise once your muscle strength improves.
moves like jumping or lifts, ballroom dancing and gentle modern dancing are great ways to use leg muscles, engage in aerobic activity and have fun! Just be sure to avoid abrupt movements or twists that could potentially put your knee out of alignment.
ADVICE: Consult your doctor before getting too active.
Cherries are the healthy pick Have you ever said no to a cherry? Probably not. This summertime treat is simply delicious. And if you’re looking for another reason to indulge, you’ll be pleased to know that cherries are surprisingly good for you.
Gout Cherries also have a low glycemic index, making them a good choice for people with diabetes. Foods with a high glycemic index cause blood glucose to soar and then quickly crash. In contrast, foods with a low index, like cherries, release glucose slowly and evenly, helping you maintain a steady blood sugar level — as well as leaving you feeling full longer and potentially helping you maintain a healthy weight. People suffering from gout, a form of arthritis characterized by severe pain,
Sleep When you find yourself wide awake and restless, your melatonin levels might be low. Melatonin is the chemical that controls your body’s internal clock to regulate sleep and promote overall healthy sleep patterns. Studies show that cherries are a natural source of melatonin, and researchers who have studied the melatonin content of cherries recommend eating them an hour before bedtime to help stabilise your sleep cycle. Heart and diabetes Heart disease and diabetes threaten the health of millions every year, and cherries can help. Research from Michigan State University found that 20 cherries provide 25 milligrams of anthocyanins, which reduce inflammation by shutting down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation. This helps protect the arteries from the damage that leads to heart disease. Further research shows that those same anthocyanins also help lower blood sugar levels in animals, leading scientists to speculate that a similar blood sugar lowering effect could occur in humans.
redness and tenderness in the joints can also be eased by cherries. Research from the Boston University School of Medicine showed that people who ate cherries had a 35 to 75 per cent lower chance of experiencing a gout attack.

3 Tips for protecting Ask the your eyes this summer Optician ing Leading optical group Specsavers Opticas have offered the follow this summer. advice for keeping eyes healthy, protected and looking great
1. Protect your eyes from the sun - We can burn our
eyes the same way we can burn our skin. Sunburn of the cornea (the eye’s surface), hugely increases the risk of bad eye health later on, as well as being rather painful. Staring directly into the sun light, even briefly, can permanently scar the retina, which is solely responsible for vision, and many of us do it without realising. Exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, eyelid skin cancer, pinguecula and pterygium. Wearing sunglasses and a hat is the best way to protect the eyes from the sun, however not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from damaging UV rays. To ensure adequate sun protection, choose sunglasses that meet industry standards and carry the ‘CE’ mark, which indicates these shades have met the necessary requirements for the European market.
2. Wear goggles – If you regularly swim in the pool, protect your eyes from the chlorine with goggles, as too much exposure to chlorine can irritate the eyes leaving them blurry and red. If your eyes are sore, try an eye rinse or saline eye drops from the chemist to relieve them. 3. Be careful of sand and small objects getting into your eye and follow the right steps to remove them - It is easy for sand or small objects to get into your eye when you’re enjoying swimming and spending time on the beach. If this happens take the following steps: • Try not to rub your eyes as this could scratch the cornea
• Do not rinse your eyes with running water,
the eye will water to flush out the object naturally • If it is still painful and you think the object is still in your eye, go to your nearest opticians who will try to locate and remove the object • If this does not help you, the Optometrist will refer you to the specialist in the nearest hospital, who will take out the object and prescribe you an ointment to heal any damage caused You should seek professional advice if you are concerned about your eye health, or are in any discomfort and have regular eye tests.

What are the main dangers to eye health? There are many common factors which can adversely affect eyesight which we should be aware of and work to avoid. Here is our advice on keeping eyes healthy and eyesight good. • Computer screen usage Excessive computer usage leads to our eyes become strained converging on one point. Anyone focused on screens for long periods of time should take frequent breaks and focus on something that is at least 20 feet away. • Family history of glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye condition in which the optic nerve is damaged due to raised fluid pressure inside the eye. If you have a family history of glaucoma, it’s important to have more frequent eye tests to ensure it is spotted early. • Smoking There is a significantly higher risk of eye disease in smokers and it can cause or worsen several eye disorders, in particular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which may lead to blindness. Stopping smoking can halt or possibly even reverse damage to the eyes. • Inadequate eye protection Wear safety goggles when undertaking DIY, there are more than 20,000 eye accidents every year and some of these can result in blindness. You should also protect your eyes from the sun with the right sunglasses. When buying sunglasses, always look out for the CE kite mark and ensure that your sunglasses are marked UV400. Marinated chicken kebabs
THESE SPICY kebabs are ideal on their own with a fresh salad or as part of a choice of barbecued meats. They are best prepared in advance and left to stand for at least an hour before cooking. • 350g skinless chicken meat, cut into cubes • 1 tbls tomato ketchup • A small piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated (or 1 tsp powdered ginger) • 1 tsp mild paprika • The grated rind and juice of an orange • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbls olive oil
1. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl then stir in the chicken pieces. Set aside for at least an hour. 2. Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers then grill or barbecue until the chicken is well browned on the outside and cooked through in the middle. Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes
Hake Fishcakes I remember fishcakes from my schooldays when they comprised 90 percent potato and 10 percent fish – if you were lucky. In recent years the posh fishcake has begun to appear on the menus of many a smart restaurant. I used hake in this version, but almost any flaky fish will do – fresh or frozen. The inclusion of a few extra ingredients gives the dish a spicy edge that really comes through in the taste. Try serving with a mixed salad. 250g hake fillets. 250ml fish stock (a cube will do) 650g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 2-3 spring onions, thinly sliced (or half a leek) ½ a small red chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced. 2 tbls olive oil. A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped. The grated rind and juice of a lemon.
1. Heat the stock in a large frying pan, then reduce to a
simmer and poach the fish until just cooked (4-5 minutes). Set aside and allow to cool. 2. In a large pan, boil the potatoes in salted water until just cooked (10-12 minutes). 3. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small pan, add the spring onions and chilli and cook gently for 5 minutes. Allow to cool. 4. Strain the potatoes and mash them in the pan. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps. Stir in the olive oil, spring onions and chilli together with the parsley, lemon rind and juice. 5. Remove any skin from the fish and break it into small chunks. Fold the fish pieces into the mashed potato taking care not to break them up. 6. Form the mixture into 4 round patties and set aside until ready to cook. (The easiest way is to use a little flour on your hands or to press the mixture into a round pastry cutter). Fry the fishcakes in a little oil over moderate heat for 7-8 minutes on each side until evenly brown. Serve immediately. Serves 2. Preparation time: 10 minutes

Tip If you are using bamboo skewers, soak them in water beforehand to stop them from burning on the barbecue. Don’t cram too many pieces of chicken on each skewer. Leave a little space between each piece and this will help them brown and cook evenly.

Bacon and Egg Salad with Oil and Balsamic Dressing For years I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France.
The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing. 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips. 4 fresh eggs. Mixed salad leaves. Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the dressing 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil. 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.
1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned. 2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes. 3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad. 4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad. 5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.

SEAT Arona engine range ENGINE AND gearbox options are largely adopted from SEAT’s supermini line-up – all are turbocharged units and have stop/start technology. Three petrol engines are offered from launch: a 95bhp 1.0-litre threecylinder, linked to a five-speed manual box, while a 115bhp version is available with a sixspeed manual or seven-speed DSG auto. A 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine features cylinder deactivation to help reduce fuel consumption, and comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox. The only diesel in the Arona is a 1.6-litre engine with 95bhp or 115bhp. The lesser-powered unit is paired with a five-speed manual box or a seven-speed DSG, while the 115bhp model gets a six-speed manual. (Source Autoexpress)

Wayne to no longer ‘Roo’ England fans Wayne Rooney @WayneRooney Dreams can come true and playing for @England has been exactly that. Thanks to everyone involved it´s been amazing HE MADE his debut for England in 2003 and 119 appearances and a national record of 53 goals later, Wayne Rooney has closed the curtain on his international career by his own choice. He said in a statement: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that. "However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football. It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me. "Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out. "Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home
to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful. I will always remain a passionate England fan. "One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side. Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team. “One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan - or in any capacity."
Schumacher junior drives for his dad MICHAEL Schumacher’s teenage son Mick (above) will mark the 25th anniversary of the German’s first Formula One victory by driving demonstration laps in a 1994 Benetton at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. Sabine Kehm, a manager for both father and son,
said that the 18-year-old would be at the wheel before Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps. Schumacher, the seventime world champion who suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident in France in 2013, made his breakthrough win - the first of a record 91 career victories - at the Belgium circuit on August 30 1992. Spa was a special place for the German, who won the 1994 and 1995 crowns with Benetton before five titles in a row with Ferrari from 2000-04. This weekend’s Belgian race could also see one of his records equalled, with
Mercedes driver and triple world champion Lewis Hamilton needing one pole position to match the German’s unprecedented 68. Now 48 years old, the most successful driver in the sport’s history has not been seen in public since his accident, with the family closely guarding his privacy at their home in Switzerland. Mick Schumacher is working his way through the junior motor racing series and is currently competing in European Formula Three after a debut in Formula Four.
Mojácar golf tournament THE SECOND Torneo de Golf Villa de Mojácar was recently held at the Marina Golf Course at Marina de la Torre, when around fifty players enjoyed a day’s play with spectacular Mediterranean views. Played under the popular Stableford rules, the results on the day were as follows and broken down into two categories. For the first category – those with handicaps between 0 and 18 – the winners were Jeónimo Tara de Miguel, from Club de La Envía and Gustavo Penno Taboada, from Desert Springs Golf Club. Winner of the Scratch Trophy was Rodriguez Gutierrez, from Madrid’s Lomas Golf Club. Second category winners – with a handicap over 18 - were Karyn Expósito
and José Alonso Nistral, both from the Marina Mojácar Golf Club. As usual there were also prizes for the longest drive and nearest the pins. Trophies were presented to the winners by Mojácar’s councillor for sports, Ana García, alongside the manager of Marina Golf. Ana thanked all the players for taking part in the second edition of the Villa de Mojácar Tournament, as well as inviting them to take up the challenge again next summer for which more new features are planned. The day of tough competition ended in good spirits with Ana drawing the ever popular prize raffle, providing a bit of fun to finish off an otherwise intense day of golf.
