Marbella for decades has taken over the council again after just over two years in the wilderness. Ángeles Muñoz was mayor from 2007 until the elections in 2015 but then did not have sufficient members elected to the council to allow her to return as leader.

Whilst she tried to obtain support from one of the minority parties, she was unsuccessful which meant that a tripartite consisting of the socialist PSOE, leftist Izquierda Unida and the San Pedro Independence Party took power with the frequent support of Podemos.

After initially ‘bad mouthing’ Muñoz and refusing to support her party after the election, Rafael Piña, leader of the San Pedro party had a change of heart just weeks after turning down an approach to form a new council in early August of this year. Continued on page 6

In tune with the times

From Rio Verde to Malaga

by Jemima Roberts THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA has committed tens of millions of Euros to a project connecting the Gaudalhorce reservoir with others on the Costa del Sol. The scheme would also see surplus water from Rio Verde and the La Concepcion reservoirs brought to areas most in need, including Malaga city, which was recently forced to take 1.5 cubic hectometres from La Viñuela and 47 from Guadalhorce. The Provincial Council last month began con-

sidering a raft of emergency proposals to deal with the ongoing drought threat. In addition to continuing the current irrigation ban one day a week, several measures are being discussed. The first is to connect the Chillar river to La Viñuela reservoir, which would bring in around 2.5 cubic hectometres of water a year. The project is now awaiting an agreement between the Environment Department and Tragsa. Farmers are also calling for further connections with reservoirs in Velez Malaga, Algarrobo and Torrox, which they believe would bring in a fur-

Local police show big hearts POLICE officers cooked for a 90-year-old woman in need. Carmen Murciano and Antonio Lavado were patrolling in Velez-Malaga when they received an alert about an elderly lady who claimed to have fallen in her home. Nonagenarian, Blanca, of Torre del Mar was found not to have fallen but had made the call because her carer, who usually attends between 10am and 3pm, had not arrived and she had been left unfed since the previous day and had only had a glass of milk during the night. The pensioner who has home help and a night time carer had lied to the telecare service about her fall because she did not believe that anyone would come otherwise. Blanca has no mental problems but suffers greatly with her mobility and cannot get around her house easily. She told the police that she was hungry and that she could not cook because she was unable to enter the kitchen alone. The officers saw that there was bacon, eggs and cheese available and made the decision to prepare it for the famished old lady. Whilst one of the officers cooked the meal, the other went out and purchased some bread to have with it. The 90-year-old has a day carer for six out of seven days and usually spends Sundays alone but the kind officers have paid her several visits since, including Sundays during their own time.

ther 10 cubic metres of water, costing €800,00. Last week, Jose Fiscal, Councillor for the Environment, said the increasing lack of water supplies in La Viñuela reservoir are “beginning to take their toll.” Despite increasing fears over water shortages, the Junta de Andalucia has still not begun work to clear the Rubite tunnel. In April, the Ministry of Environment promised the works would begin “imminently” and were expected to take four months, saving around two cubic hectometres a year.

MIJAS COUNCIL has unveiled a list of non-sexist pop songs recommended for fairs and festivals. The Enjoy Music From Equality scheme is designed “to promote attitudes and behaviours based on respect and equality, also in festival spaces and days,” according to equality councillor Mari Carmen Carmona. Tracks featured on the list include Beyonce’s Run the World and Aretha Franklin’s Respect.

Sad loss of pictures of a deceased son by Michael Cano A THIEF broke into the Estepona home of Lynn and Russell Davies for the second time in a year and ripped away their memories. The burglar took a camera containing pictures of severely disabled son Brendon who passed away on April 18 2016 as well as the couple’s passports and some jewellery which Lynn had inherited from her late mother. Lynn fought back the tears as she explained to RTN that the couple had willingly devoted all of their time to caring for Brendon and in the 19 years of his life, they had never had a holiday but had finally saved enough to allow them to take a short cruise later this month. Whilst they are devastated by the loss of two memory cards which were full of pictures of Brendon, they are also hit heavily in the pocket as having obtained new passports for the trip, they have to find another €270 for replacement passports with no guarantee that they will be received back from the UK in time. There is an option of obtaining emergency documents from the British Consulate but that will cost a further €234 all due to the selfish actions of a petty criminal.

It is easy to be wise after the event and Lynn bitterly regrets leaving a full memory card in the camera case which was stolen as it was that which contained so many of the couple’s memories of their cheerful fighter of a son. The severely disabled Brendon was born in the Costa del Sol and surprised many by managing to live until the age of 19 thanks to the dedicated care given to him by his parents but he finally succumbed to his disabilities and the funeral service was attended by a large number of mourners at a ceremony held at the Santo Cristo de la Veracruz Crematorium Estepona two days after his death. Brendon’s parents are enthusiastic dancers and always ensured that he was part of anything that they did and supporters like singer Antony Wolfson who alerted the paper to their plight and Tim Knight did all that they could to help the family, even raising funds through charitable events which set aside costs towards his funeral. If you know anything that could help to locate the missing pictures then please send us a message via our RTN Facebook page: www.facebook.com/RTNNewspaper/ or via Antony’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/antony.wolfson

Downpour MALAGA’S City Council has met to put in place the Municipal Emergency Plan to deal with the current heavy rainfall. The meeting brought together members of the council, Local Police, fire services and Guardia Civil, to prepare for possible emergencies brought on by the bad weather. Municipal workers will be inspecting the most vulnerable “red” zones, and clearing gutters and drains in an attempt to prevent flooding, as well as 90 streams across the province. Officials say they are ready in case the national meterological office raise the alert warning. In the meantime, the council is advising locals to listen to weather updates and not take any unnecessary risks.

Green spaces

Something fishy

Miguel Diaz: checks out the works

by Jemima Roberts MARBELLA’S Council is carrying out €90,000 works to the Coto de los Dolores pine forest in an effort to improve the green space. The project, which will see the area extended, comes in response to suggestions by residents, and will include “the conditioning of pedestrian and bicycle paths, the creation of a picnic area and improvements to existing vegetation,” according to Miguel Diaz, Deputy Mayor of Las

Chapas. Mr Diaz said he hopes the space will become “the ‘green lung’ of Marbella,” explaining the works are part of a larger, four-part project to create 26 kilometres of pedestrian paths and 21 kilometres of bicycle lanes, as well as equipment for children and sports. He commented, “we are talking about more than €700,000 invested by the council to complete the as Chapas green space, a project with great community support,” adding a further €117,000 have been budgeted to light

Night guns A MAN has been arrested after allegedly firing a gun during the night. The 32-year-old Spaniard had is suspected of blasting his pistol up to seven times in the vicinity of Calle Martina de la Rosa, Malaga. Upon is arrest the following day, he was found to have a gun, a 25 centimetre knife, and several bullets. Police collected seven spent bullet casings from the area and believe that the accused fired them in into the air in celebration before quickly leaving the area.

THE PRICE of sardines and anchovies almost tripled in June on the Costa del Sol in response to demand from tourists, it has been revealed. The popular fish sold for €8 a kilo, compared to their normal €3, forcing wholesalers to bring in catches from other areas of Spain to cater to demand. A representative from seafood supplier Hiberniamar explained shell fish had also increased in price, particularly prawns, crayfish, lobster and crab. The increase in demand saw suppliers importing fish from Cadiz, Huelva, Castellon, Valencia, Alicante and Catalonia. According to Hiberniamar, the majority of fish sold on the Costa del Sol is sourced from outside Malaga province, “in our case in summer, when demand increases 50 per cent we source 70 per cent of our fish from other ports, and 30 per cent from the province.”

the entrance and perimeter of the green space, as well as installing toilets. An initial phase, costing €370,000, has already been completed, creating a bike path in 12 hectares of land in the Pinar de Elviria, as well as pedestrian paths, playgrounds, sports grounds, a dog park, and an area for urban gardens. Mr Diaz explained the council wanted to “create a network of trails and facilities that connect the different green areas in this district and enhance sustainability, nature, accessibility and tourism.”

Wrong forecast

Continued from Front Page He then declared that San Pedro had been promised much but delivered little by Bernal and therefore with a promise of greater autonomy and €18 million in grants, agreed to ‘cross the chamber’ and deliver his two votes in the no confidence motion. DOOMSAYERS were forced to eat humble pie as tourism continues to thrive. More than 4.6 million overnight stays were recorded in July in Malaga as the province enjoyed more than a third of the Costa del Sol tourism, the highest in Spain. Experts have warned for years of the fragility of Spanish economy due to its reliance on foreign tourists and cheaper breaks being offered in different world destinations, predicting

which can now only muster 12 and thus all of the portfolios of the council with the exception of Treasury which is held by the San Pedro councillor will change. The new mayor says that she is looking to work with the other parties particularly with regards to budget expenditure and with the next election not due for 21 months, if the

a long term decline. Those forecasts are being smashed though, the domestic market is back to what it was a decade ago and foreign tourists, the vast majority of whom are British, are accounting for more than 70 per cent of hotel stays, boosting profitability and employment within the tourism industry. Should next month prove as fruitful, then a new record could be set of more than 7 million tourists between June and September.

opposition won’t toe the line, then she can certainly impose her will. The Podemos councillors have publicly stated that they will be the mouth of the opposition and will keep a close eye on the activities of the new council, but unless there is an unlikely change in the San Pedro support, the PP will control the council for nearly two years.

Pool party by Sally Underwood A NEW swimming pool is set to grace Marbella’s Serrano Lima sports centre, following a €162,510 investment. The council has put together a tender for the works, which have been supported by various swimming, water polo and triathlon clubs, and claims the project will be complete within four months once begun. Blanca Fernandez, Councillor for Works and Sports, explained, “we have listened to your requests and also explained the strategic difficulties that arise from changing the Urban Plan so we believe this is a faster solution.” She added the project “covers the needs of clubs and takes into account the contributions also made by the Andalusian Swimming Federation.” The new facility will include a 25-metre pool for swimming and water polo, as well as a teaching pool between 16 and 21 metres long, seating for 300 people, changing rooms, gym, café and offices.

Council pays €1.95m fine

FUENGIROLA’S Council has been forced to use €1.8 million from a contingency fund to cover a fine for delays in paying for works to the Elola Sports Centre. A court in Malaga passed the judgment after the council delayed paying

the €6.5 million bill for the project, which took place between 2005 and 2008. Opposition parties have criticised the governing team for using funds for other projects to pay the fine, although the council says it is “absolutely normal.”

The contingency fund, which was put aside to support families, is said to be running at a surplus, with a source saying, “we have made sure the money will not be needed for its original purpose and all the aid for our residents will be

covered.” Opposition party Ciudadanos said the situation was “disastrous and catastrophic,” while the governing team said the party had shown “no interest” in the issue in the council session.

HOTELS across the Costa del Sol have reported a drop in false compensation claims this summer following a crackdown by the British Government. Miguel Sanchez, head of tourism at the Andalusian Confederation of Employers, explained Britain’s move to limit the amounts companies could earn for handling each claim had helped calm concerns among Spanish hotel owners. After an outcry among Spanish hoteliers last year, the British Government committed to taking “this matter very seriously” and has this month revoked the licence of claims company, Allsure, based in Preston, Lancashire. The Claims Management Regulator (CMR) removed the company’s licence for “encouraging travellers to invent or adorn symptoms of gastric diseases to obtain compensation.” The company was also found to have exaggerated the amounts potential clients would receive in compensation and to have encouraged customers to make false statements to fulfil the criteria necessary for making a claim, according to media reports. The investigation, which began in February, resulted in Allsure losing its licence to offer claims management services, with Kevin Rousell, CEO of CMR, confirming he will continue to take “strong action against complaints companies engaging in serious misconduct” and that “conduct will not be tolerated to encourage the filing of fraudulent claims”. The company now has 28 days to appeal the decision.

Feria fraud by Sally Underwood

Tunnel danger A MAN in his 30s has died after his car crashed into a wall in the Churriana tunnel on the A-7. Firefighters were forced to recover the man’s body from the accident, which happened at kilometre 277. The motorway was reduced to two lanes of traffic while firemen, Guardia Civil and Local Police Officers could remove the wreckage. It is not yet known what caused the crash. Meanwhile, a 24-year-old woman remains seriously injured after crashing in the same tunnel. The young woman, who is being treated at the Malaga Regional Hospital, sustained head injuries after crashing in an as yet unexplained accident.

FUENGIROLA’S Council has launched a criminal investigation after unearthing electoral fraud in the public vote to choose this year’s Feria Rosario poster. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, has revealed around 741 “irregular” votes had been cast, with one NIE number being used to make 338 votes. The election has now been cancelled after computer technicians detected “a series of irregularities that can only be classified as very serious and a fraudulent use of the system,” suggesting their system had been hacked. In June a public contest was put together to choose a poster for the feria, with a prize of €3,750 up for grabs. Thirty works were submitted but the jury, made up of municipal workers, decided not to award a prize, believing none of the works met the competition’s requirements. A public outcry followed, forcing the council to put the contest to a vote on their website in which only registered voters

in Fuengriola could cast a ballot using their NIE number. Only one vote per person was allowed but the competition’s second phase IT workers found an impossibly high number of votes had been cast, revealing “fraud and a violation of the system by several individuals.” Mayor Mula explained, “we cannot determine what posters the irregular votes have gone to.” She added, “people who are not registered have been able to vote for a poster, something which should have been impossible. It is unfortunate that people who have voted honestly, meeting the requirements, have been disadvantaged by those people who have chosen to violate the system, I suppose to try to get the prize.” The council has now submitted evidence, including identity numbers and IP addresses to a court to ascertain whether a crime has been committed. Mayor Mula said the jury will now decide what becomes of the competition, describ-

their own interests over those of the town for something as important as the Feria Rosario. I hope justice will now be dealt swiftly.”

It all started on Facebook some four years ago when the Sorolla Museum in Madrid posted a photo of the painting with the caption “where are we?”. The vast majority of followers identified the landscape to be the Cap Marti but one follower - Antonio Gonzalez-Alba – disagreed. According to Gonzalez-Alba, a Professor of Fine Arts at the Uni-

versity of Seville, the landscape was in fact the Penon del Cuervo and only recently has he managed to convince the museum and the heirs of Sorolla the same, including Sorolla’s great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on his work. The renamed painting is now back on display at the museum in Madrid.

Human remains discovered

Tax appeal

The rugged countryside near to Mijas

by Jemima Roberts GUARDIA CIVIL officers have unearthed two dismembered corpses in the countryside in Arenas and Mijas. Agents are now looking at lists of missing people from the last several years to try to identify the bodies, which were found on the same day in two different towns. Police believe the corpses were dismembered after death by animals and explain they do not show any signs of violence prior to dying. A company technician found the first body in Mijas after noticing bones and alerting the authorities who were able to confirm the skeleton was human and was missing part of its skull. Scientists at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Malaga performed forensic tests on the body, ascertaining the deceased had died at least two or three years before. Later the same day, a resident in Are-

nas found a human head, calling the Guardia Civil who sent officers to find the rest of the remains, which had been broken apart by animals. An autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Malaga was performed, finding the man had not been dead long, due to his state of decomposition. An investigation showed the bodies had not been subject to any violence and there was no evidence any third party had been involved in either of their deaths. Guardia Civil officers are now focusing their efforts on identifying the bodies and are using missing person’s files in the province to see if any details, including descriptions of clothing or physical features, could give them a clue to their identities. Officers say although their investigations remain at an early stage, they have already found two missing people who match some of the characteristics of the

deceased found in Mijas and Arenas. In June it was reported officers from the Civil Protection Service were investigating whether the death of a 70-yearold Norwegian man found in the woods in Mijas who was killed by multiple bee stings caused by negligent beekeeping. The man’s body was found by a female dog walker a day after he went missing. He was said to be wearing a t-shirt and shorts, and was found with his top covering his head and multiple bee stings to his body. Investigators are not sure why the man was stung but say it is certain he walked past a hive, was stung, tried to flee but died about 400 metres down the path. Pathologists said they cannot be certain whether the man suffered from an allergy but say he was stung enough times that a lethal amount of apitoxin entered his blood stream, prompting anaphylactic shock.

MIJAS Council has approved a motion to lower a series of local taxes from January 2018. As of next year, property tax (IBI) will be reduced from 0.508 per cent of a property’s value to 0.44826 per cent, while capital gains tax (Plusvalia), tax on some vehicles, inheritance tax and administrative fees will be lowered. Capital gains tax will be lowered to 22 per cent, while inheritance tax will soon only apply to houses worth more than €100,000; double the previous amount of €50,000. Fees for auctions, contracts, administrative forms and competitions will also be waived if they are under €6. Mijas’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, explained “we have been limiting expenditure and making savings, restoring the town’s finances and we can pass on our good fortune to the people of Mijas. We do not have any debt and this can be enjoyed by locals, who benefit from the successful way we have run our finances.” Mari Carmen Gonzalez, Councillor for Finance added, "in the last quarter of 2016, we announced the beginning of the review of a significant number of taxes to benefit our residents…after the study process, we approved the motion to lower taxes in 2018.” Non-polluting vehicles, including electric and solar cars, will receive a 75 per cent tax reduction from next year, while vehicles which minimise pollution, including hybrid vehicles, will see a 50 per cent reduction. The proposal was unanimously approved by all parties after the council received around 70 suggestions from the public. Tamara Vera, Councillor for Citizen Participation, explained, at the drafting stage we studied the feasibility of all proposals to see if they could be included in the document, eventually agreeing on legislation in which everyone was represented.”

Sunbed vandals BUSINESS owners running sun bed concessions on Torremolinos have called on the police to provide greater surveillance after night-time vandalism has increased. The businessmen say one latest incident resulted in several broken loungers and bottles left in the area after young people use the beds to drink on late at night. While the owners say the police are not “doing anything,” officers say the beach is patrolled from 7pm to 2am and they have not received any formal complaints. Earlier this month, sun bed business owners also complained after it emerged some are exceeding their allotted space to make higher profits. The average 500 square metre space permitted by law to owners

of sun bed businesses is increasingly being surpassed, leading to visits from inspectors and conflict with beach-goers who are finding it ever more difficult to find a place on the beach to sunbathe. Business owners who do keep to their allocated space, which can house an average of 100 beds, have now voiced their concerns with their council about those who choose to exceed their area with the addition of further beds and table. Maribel Tocon, the town’s Councillor for Beaches met with dozens of beach workers who complained about the “unfair competition and bad image” irresponsible businesses bring, calling the issue an “invasion.” Councillor Tocon asked for the “collaboration” of all business owners and promised to meet with the Junta de

Andalucia to increase allotted spaces, which some workers have called “insufficient.” Political party Izquierda Unida (IU) claimed they had received “complaints from some users of La Carihuela beach that it is sometimes difficult not only to walk along the shore but just to be on it.” A spokesman from a coalition of left-leaning parties, David Tejeiro, asked the council’s minority-governing party, PSOE to increase beach inspections “to avoid abuse by a minority of business owners who exceed their areas.” One business owner commented, the situation “is not positive. It gives the impression it is impossible to find space to put a towel down in Torremolinos,” adding, “it is damaging to us all.”

by Jemima Roberts LOCAL POLICE in Benalmadena have published a report into cracking down on illegal street vendors. A representative explained they have worked out the vendors’ routines and will soon begin detaining them, adding, "it is a priority to avoid arrests which use force or would generate fear,” or would be “disproportionate that would upset the public.” The report shows vendors in areas including El Saltillo, where the practice is most prevalent, start their day at around 11am, moving around throughout the day to avoid police. At around 4pm another set of vendors, who are normally immigrants from Africa, take over.

Police say the practice is at its busiest between 8pm and 9pm, when vendors take over the promenade, disappearing when they are tipped off to police prescence. Officers explained the sellers also prefer to stick together as this makes it harder for police to catch them, as they generally only patrol in groups of two and are outnumbered. Earlier this month, Benalmadena’s Council has launched a campaign in collaboration with the Department of Commerce to prevent illegal street vending. The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, has revealed a series of leaflets in several languages have been distributed in the most heavily visited tourist areas raising awareness of the problem. He explained, "we are

aware that illegal street vending is a social problem and we think it is vital to involve residents and tourists in finding a solution, because illegal vending does not benefit the seller or the buyer.” Mayor Navas said the council is considering a series of proposals to counteract the practice, including setting up legal markets. Illegal vending continues to be a problem across the Costa del Sol with the illegal sale of tobacco still a problem at this year’s Malaga feria, despite efforts to reduce the practice. The council this year installed an authorised tobacconist to crack down on the problem. The retailer, located in the Real de la Feria, has attracted large crowds of smokers, although some illegal street ven-

Diversion! CURRENT stormy conditions have already forced ten planes flying to Malaga Airport to divert. While some aircraft have been able to use windows in the bad weather to land, six others have been forced to set down in Seville and four in Granada. Among those affected were flights from Newcastle, Cardiff,

Amsterdam, Tenerife, Paris, London and Stockholm, causing considerable travel delays to passengers. The diverted planes are often forced to wait on the tarmac at their diverted airport, according to media reports, waiting for up to an hour and a half for a window to return to Malaga.

in to deal with the problem, more measures have been put in place to stop the sale of illegal tobacco this year, leading to 200 packets of cigarettes being confiscated.

Radical idea OFFICIALS at Malaga City Council have put together a plan to prevent radicalisation following the Barcelona terrorist attacks. The city was chosen by Spain’s central government

to be used as a pilot in a national scheme to prevent the spread of jihadism. The plan, which also involves collaboration with the University of Malaga, will promote social cohesion and tolerance.

The scheme, which is described as “pioneering” in Spain, will work from the view point those who have been radicalised by cells or online are themselves victims and need help.

Trial by fire by Jemima Roberts THE COUNCIL in Fuengirola has approved plans to invest up to 1,536,437 euros on a selfservice vehicle for the fire service. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, said the council had been working with members of the fire prevention team on the vehicle’s technical specifications. She explained, “this is very important news, especially for our firefighters who have been asking for an automated ladder for some time as there are very few in the province. It is a major challenge.” The new vehicle will have very specific characteristics, including a four-part automatic escalator, the last of which will be articulated, measuring a total of 30 metres, and equipment for extinguishing fires, exploration of buildings and rescue. Once the tender is complete, the winning company will be given a year to supply the vehicle. Mayor Mula commented, “it is an investment which will significantly improve the services we provide, although hopefully the automatic ladder will never be needed as that would mean a significant fire at a great height.” She added, “we have a great fire team

and now we will be able to add a truck designed by the firefighters themselves.” The news comes after Fuengirola prepare to hand back a firehouse it had been using from some years to Mijas Council. Fuengirola Council has said it will hand it over within the month following protracted legal wrangling. Mijas’ Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, commented, “the station is set to return to the arms of Mijas, which it should never have left.” The dispute looked set to reach eviction proceedings until Ana Mula wrote to her Mijas counterpart, saying her council would vacate the building, which is located in Mijas. Fuengirola’s firefighters had been using the building for several years but have since built one within their own municipality, prompting Mijas Council to ask for the site back, even resorting to legal threats. According to media reports, Mijas’ request “was denied by former mayor and now Partido Popular member, Esperanza Oña, and by the current mayor, Ana Mula.” Fuengirola Council took the issue to court, requesting the building be gifted as payment for €4.5 million worth of services its says

have been provided by its firemen. The court sided with Mijas Council, stating nothing was owed to Fuengirola Council and it did not make sense for Fuengirola’s firefighters to remain in a building not belonging to the council. Mijas Council says it made numerous written and verbal requests to Ana Mula, asking her to vacate the building, sending a formal request on September 14, 2016, saying it wanted the building back within a month.

Four months later, Ana Mula wrote back saying she would return the building but claiming she and Mayor Maldonado have “different interpretations” of the ruling, since it “does not contain any order imposing the building’s return and does not determine the legal status of the property,” adding the ruling only dealt with a “cost claim” between the two councils.

Star-studded coastline Radical idea DESPITE the current gloomy weather, a whole host of celebrities are continuing to flock to Spain. “Human Ken doll,” Rodrigo Alves, was spotted in Marbella partying up a storm with rapper Tyga, the former boyfriend of model and Kardashian family member. The 34-year-old is famous for his ambition to look like Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken, and has undergone 50 plastic surgeries. The Balearics also continue to draw in the rich and famous, with Paris Hilton, the 36-year-old, reality TV star, model, DJ and singer, announcing she is following in her great-grandfather, Conrad Hilton’s, footsteps and opening a hotel on Ibiza. The blonde beauty is calling the venture, Paris’s Boutique Hotel. Paris explained the venture would be “very futuristic and very Ibiza.”

YAZMIN OKHELLOU, the 23-year-old star of The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE), has been photographed showing off her stunning figure in a white lace one-piece swim suit on a beach in Marbella. The reality TV star was taking a break from filming for the show, napping on a sun lounger in the popular resort. Yazmin, who is going out with fellow TOWIE star, James Lock, jetted to Turkey last month for surgery to her nose. The Essexborn beauty had the corrective surgery after breaking her nose, leaving her with a “small bump,” and says she is thrilled with the “amazing” results.

OFFICIALS at Malaga City Council have put together a plan to prevent radicalisation following the Barcelona terrorist attacks. The city was chosen by Spain’s central government to be used as a pilot in a national scheme to prevent the spread of jihadism. The plan, which also involves collaboration with the University of Malaga, will promote social cohesion and tolerance. The scheme, which is described as “pioneering” in Spain, will work from the view point those who have been radicalised by cells or online are themselves victims and need help.

Stabbing spate by Jemima Roberts A 26-YEAR-OLD Spanish man has been arrested for attempted murder after stabbing a man in the stomach and chest in Malaga. The alleged culprit was caught by National Police officers several hours after the attack, which took place on Calle Fernan Nuùez. The victim was taken to the Malaga Regional Hospital where he received stitches to several stab wounds. The stabbing is the latest of several across the Costa del Sol with a man, aged 30, injured in a knifing at the Malaga feria. The man remains in Intensive Care (ICU) at the Malaga Regional Hospital but is now breathing without medical intervention and is expected to be moved out of the ICU. The stab victim received multiple stab wounds to his neck, chest and abdomen at around 10pm at the feria between Postigo de Arance and Calle Carreteria. At last year’s feria, police confiscated 21 knives and seized 417

narcotic substances. Meanwhile, a seafront knife fight in Fuengirola left four wounded with the victims, aged between 21 and 29, hospitalised with knife wounds. Nine people were arrested of Spanish and Maghreb origin after a fight broke out at around 6am on Calle Martinez Catena. Of the four in hospital, a twenty-one-yearold is expected to live but remains the most seriously injured after he received deep stab wounds to his neck and forearm. The other three received injuries to various parts of their body but were not considered to be in a critical condition. The National Police have started an investigation into the fight but have already identified those involved and are now working out each person’s involvement, as well as who started the confrontation and whether any other weapons, including bottles, were used.

The diverted planes are often forced to wait on the tarmac at their diverted airport, according to media reports, waiting for up to an hour and a half for a window to return to Malaga.

by Rose Holmes Half a million people marched in Barcelona in a show of unity under the slogan no tinc por (I am not afraid) after Catalonia’s recent terror attacks. The march last Saturday was led by shopkeepers and residents of the city’s Las Ramblas boulevard, where a van ploughed into pedestrians on August 17, killing 13 people and injuring over 100. The crowd applauded emergency services representatives who also led the march, along with taxi drivers who helped evacuate people at

the time of the attacks. Spain’s King Felipe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the head of Catalonia’s regional government Carles Puigdemont walked amongst the throng as people cheered and bore red, yellow and white roses — the colours of the nation’s second-biggest city. “We are here to say we’re not afraid, we are united and we want peace,” a pensioner said as she marched. Slogans carried by marchers read “No to Islamophobia” and “The best answer: peace”. Members of Spain’s Islamic community marched alongside the king

and the prime minister, including women wearing hijabs. Speakers gave readings next to a floral display with the words “Barcelona” and “I am not afraid” in different languages including Arabic. In addition to the 13 killed by the van, two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife attack in the Cat-

alan coastal resort of Cambrils. A 51-year-old German woman died this week after being treated in a critical condition in hospital, but It is not yet clear which of the attacks she was injured in Police said they believed a 12man terror cell had planned and carried out the attacks. Dáesh fighter mocked on Spanish Twitter AN Islamic State fighter has become the unlikely target of Spanish social-media ridicule after threatening Spain that more attacks would follow those in Catalonia. Twitter users responded to an Islamic State video by turning the young Spanish-speaking jihadist into a meme that was among the social-media site's most popular ‘trending topics’. In one, the bearded jihadist becomes a YouTube blogger asking for viewers to like - and subscribe to - his channel. In another, he raps along to a reggaeton track dubbed the "official Dáesh remix." "When you see me, I know you're trembling," the fighter raps in a version of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny's hit Tu No Metes Cabra (You Don't Scare Me). In the original video, the fighter said the Islamic State would avenge

Muslims killed in the 15th-century Spanish Inquisition and rebuild "Al Andalus," the medieval Muslim territory that occupied most of modern Spain and Portugal. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks on August 17 and 18, in which jihadists in a van mowed crowds down on Barcelona's Las Ramblas and then later assaulted the Catalan seaside resort of Cambrils. The Spanish media, citing police sources, have identified the fighter as 22-year-old Muhammad Yasin Ahram Perez, born in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba, who moved to Syria to join Islamic State in 2014 with his mother and brothers. One popular meme with the fighter, known as "El Cordobes," referred to a Spanish online backlash last year against British chef Jamie Oliver for attempting to remake paella, by adding muscles

and chorizo. "An authentic paella is made WITHOUT seafood," the fighter is quoted saying in the tweet's caption.

in Madrid last week. An investigation into the cell’s possible international links is ongoing. According to reports in the Spanish press, the cell had planned a much bigger attack, with possible targets including the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí’s much-loved, half-finished church in Barcelona.

British antique thief arrested in Spain A BRITISH man has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of stealing a collection of ancient Roman artefacts from Italy. The 55-year-old man was arrested in a hotel in Los Palacios y Villafranca, south of Seville, after police conducted a routine security check on guests. His name came up on a database and showed that an Italian court had issued a warrant for his arrest. He was in possession of “very valuable collector’s items” for which he was unable to show proof of ownership, a spokeswoman for the Spanish police said. They included 90 packets of Roman and Arab coins, six clay lamps and a ceramic image of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. In total, there were around 140 valuable antiques. Spanish police said their investigation was still ongoing because “the suspect may have accomplices or colleagues helping him in the antiques trade”.

Priest resigns over Hindu statue episode

NO RETURN: Ms Rivas posted this photo to social media as she spent a month in hiding with the children

by Fabio Delucci After spending almost a month in hiding, Juana Rivas handed her children over to the authorities earlier this week but may still face prison. The Public Prosecutor has asked for prison without bail for ignoring a court summons despite a previous judge allowing Ms Rivas to walk free. After being told by the Granada court that any decision concerning custody of her children must be made by the Italian authorities, Juana Rivas accepted and voluntarily surrendered her two children to the Guardia Civil on Monday morning. They were collected by their Italian

father, Francesco Arcuri, later that day. The couple met in 2004 in London where 23-year-old Ms Rivas was learning English and Mr Arcuri, who was 38, was managing a restaurant. They had two children and later settled in Sardinia but Ms Rivas returned to Spain in May last year - taking the children without her husband’s consent, claiming he had attacked her mentally and physically and also abused their eldest son. Ms Rivas has described herself as being trapped in the Italian countryside, living in fear of an abusive partner. But Mr Arcuri, who claims his ex-partner was constantly out partying in San Pietro and leaving him to attend to

No entry UKRAINIAN security said on Tuesday it had barred two Spanish journalists from entering the country over their coverage of a conflict with eastern separatists - a move media groups denounced as an attack on free speech. The State Security Service (SBU) said the journalists had written articles alleging Ukrainian troops had shelled civilian areas, an account it said was false. Antonio Pampliega and Angel Sastre wrote on Twitter that they had been barred from entering Ukraine at Kiev’s main airport. “After 20 hours detained in Kiev a military man arrived and put us on an airplane without explanations,” wrote Sastre. “They have treated us like criminals, the only thing missing is putting us in chains,” said Pampliega. SBU spokeswoman Olena Gitlyanska told Reuters the journalists had “been forbidden from entering due to activity that is contrary to the interests of Ukraine.” “Look at what they’ve published,” she said, when asked for details.

most of the parental duties, says Spanish public opinion has unjustly turned against him. A Swiss woman, identified as S.M, who was Mr Arcuri's partner for 10 years, has said she does "not believe for one second that he has mistreated his wife and kids". Campaigners have made Ms Rivas a symbol of Spain's battle against gender violence, which sees an average of 60 women killed each year by their partners or ex-partners. But Francesco Arcuri insists he is the victim of a media frenzy that has distorted their relationship, cast him as the villain and deprived him of seeing his children.

CEUTA priest Juan Jose Mateo has been made to step down after allowing a large statue of the Hindu god Ganesh to be carried into the Santuario de Santa Maria de Africa parish church and placed at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Bishop Rafael Zornoza has expressed his "deep pain for this deplorable episode, which has caused confusion, damage and scandal within the Christian community". Meanwhile the Hindu community in the Spanish enclave comprising approximately 800 followers has said it cannot understand the reproof for an "act of co-existence" between religions. Last Sunday, the community marked the birth of Ganesh with a procession through the city to the sea. "For the last eight years we have made a stop at the Santuario de Santa María de Africa as an act of reverence because we also consider her to be the city's patron saint. We do not understand the condemnation of the priest," the president of the Hindu community in Ceuta, Ramesh Chandiramani, told the Spanish press.

Scottish teen 'gang-raped' on Magaluf beach POLICE in Mallorca are looking for three men after a 19-year-old Scottish female claimed she was gang-raped on a beach in Magaluf. Though police have been given a photo of one of the

men who allegedly attacked the teen, a spokesman for the Guardia Civil confirmed that they were yet to make any arrests earlier this week. The victim claims she was sexually assaulted on the stretch of beach in front of

the Punta Ballena strip - the most popular area of the tourist resort. The Spanish press reported that the young woman went to the beach with one of the men, whom she allegedly knew, to find that his two uninvited friends were there when she arrived. She claims all three men sexually assaulted her before she was found by Guardia Civil officers naked and crying. She says she shouted for help whilst on the beach but no one came to her aid. Her clothes are being an-

alysed for clues and DNA. A source told the English press that there is a photo of one of the alleged offenders, thought to have been on the victim’s mobile phone. They said: "She has a photo of one of the men she said had raped her and assured officers she could identify him." The nationalities of the offenders have not been revealed, though they are thought to be British. It is also not known whether the young woman was on holiday or living and working in the area.

112-year-old Spanish man claims ‘World’s Oldest Man’ title 112 YEARS and eight months of age, boasting four children, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, Francisco Nunez Olivera from the village of Bienvenida in Western Spain is laying claim to the title of the world’s oldest man. Born on December 13, 1904, Olivera told the Spanish press he reckons “good genes, hard work, a varied diet of homegrown vegetables and a daily glass of red wine” are the key ingredients to a long life. He has managed to maintain this routine despite losing his teeth four decades ago. “Until the age of 107 he used to walk the streets by himself. Whenever he got tired, he would rest in the corner, chatting away to people. He loves chatting,” his sister, Maria Antonia, 81, told the Spanish press. A widower since 1988, Olivera also claims he has never broken a bone, despite fighting in the Rif War in North Africa (1920-1926) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), affording him the title of Spain’s oldest veteran.

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA: Olivera lost his teeth four decades ago The Guinness Book of World Records has yet to officially recognise Olivera as the world’s oldest man because the originals of his birth certificate and other documentation from his local church and school were burnt in a fire during the civil war. However, El Mundo claims to have found copies of a wedding certificate which corroborate Olivera’s story. The previous titleholder of the

world’s oldest living man was Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal, who passed away a month before his 114th birthday on August 11. There are over 17,000 people in Spain above the age of 100, 16 of whom are 110 years of age or over. The officially recognised oldest living woman in the world is Jamaica’s Violet Brown, who was born on March 10, 1900.

Pension cold calling banned The UK government has confirmed new measures to protect private pension savers from the threat of unscrupulous pension scammers. The measures will include a ban on cold calling in relation to pensions, including emails and text messages and a tightening of HMRC rules to stop scammers opening fraudulent pension schemes. The cold calling ban will be enforced

by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and will also see tougher actions to help prevent the transfer of money from occupational pension schemes into fraudulent ones. The government is also tackling scammers by ensuring that only active companies, which produce regular, up-to-date accounts, can register pension schemes. Limiting transfers of pension pots from one occupa-

tional scheme to another will mean trustees must check their receiving scheme is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, or has an active employment link with the individual, or is an authorised master trust. The announcement comes as new figures released show almost £5 million was obtained by pension scammers in the first five months of 2017. It is estimated that £43 million has also been unlawfully obtained by scammers since April 2014, with those targeted having lost an average of nearly £15,000, as scammers try to encourage savers to part with their money with false promises of low-risk, high-return investment opportunities. Minister for Pensions and Financial Inclusion Guy Opperman said: “These figures highlight the extent to which people’s savings are being targeted and stolen through elaborate hoaxes – leaving them with little opportunity to build up their savings again. That is why we are introducing tough new measures for those who scam. “If people have saved for a private pension, we want to protect them. This is the biggest lifesaving that individuals normally make over many years of hard work. By tackling these scammers, people should know that cold calling, apart from exceptional circumstances, is banned.”

Giant omelette cooked amidst egg scare

A BELGIAN town honoured its 22-year-old tradition of making a giant omelette amidst an egg contamination scare, cooking 10,000 eggs in a pan four metres wide. Millions of chicken eggs have been pulled from European supermarket shelves as a result of the scare over the use of the insecticide fipronil, which is forbidden in the food chain and can cause organ damage in humans. Hundreds of people gath-

ered in the eastern Belgian city of Malmedy undeterred by the scare and the president of the local branch of the giant omelette fraternity, BenedicteMathy, said she was confident the dish was safe to eat. Under a timid Belgian sun and with music playing they tucked into the giant omelette cooked over an open fire by ‘The World Fraternity of Knights of the Giant Omelette’, which was created in 1973.

British bartender blags ringside Mayweather v McGregor tickets RINGSIDE TICKETS to the Mayweather v McGregor fight went for up to $138,000 (€115,000) but a British bartender managed to upgrade his seat for free. Oliver Regis bought a ticket to last weekend’s super fight between unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC star Conor McGregor in Las Vegas. But when he got there, he wasn’t happy with his seat and decided to take matters into his own hands. Posing as a member of Mayweather’s team, Regis managed to get through security and land himself a seat in the third row where he rubbed shoulders with celebrities such as Demi Lovato, Jaime Foxx and Mike Tyson. “I did feel a bit cheeky but this was a once in a lifetime chance,” Regis said. “I could not believe it worked.” The fight earned Mayweather more money than any fighter before him - he battered McGregor, finally stopping him at 1.05 of the 10th round.

Julie Barry, a Lion with a heart by Michael Cano A FORMER dancer who appeared in Grange Hill is now president of La Cala de Mijas Lions Club which raises between €50,000 and €80,000 each year. The achievements of the 36 Lions (the maximum allowed) and their many helpers are incredible with so much money earned by the charity which it then spends in the area. Julie Barry took over the reins of La Cala Lions in July of this year and she told RTN in an exclusive interview that she has many plans to encourage wise expenditure as well getting ready for the this chapter’s 20th Anniversary at the start of next year. First charity shop She is proud of the fact that the La Cala charity shop was - as far as the Lions know - the very first British style charity shop opened in the Costa del Sol and the double fronted store, just off the seafront is packed with a whole range of goods and customers. Open daily Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm, the charity strives to have one Lion and six volunteers on the premises at all times and this major contributor to the Lions income is always looking for additional volunteers to work in the shop just one day a week. Loves Spain Julie from Wales, a bundle of energy, who has run her own dance school moved to Spain permanently with ex Royal Navy husband Tim and their son now aged 18 just seven and a half years ago. She loves the climate, the people and the pace of life but wasn’t prepared to just sit back and enjoy the life of a lotus eater, especially as Tim started working at Marbella Golf and their son was at school. Becoming a Lion Julie decided to become a volunteer at the

Julie Barry outside La Cala de Mijas Lions shop charity shop and found that she loved the close relationships formed with all of the volunteers and having been a charity fundraiser in the UK, she was impressed with the way in which the Lions supported local causes. As time passed and she became more involved, she decided to apply to become one of the 36 Lions and although she is not a Spanish speaker, persuaded her son to assist her as translator (and general porter) whenever needed. Future plans Now as President of La Cala Lions, she is able to influence the donations made during the coming year, although they will continue to fund local schools and charities as well as

looking slightly further afield. The parent group which was founded in Alabama as a men’s club has expanded around the world and its motto “We Serve” expresses the aims of every single one of its groups. A small percentage of funds raised are sent to the International Foundation to support the ‘Sight First’ programme which helps to cure blindness around the world. The Bill Gates Foundation matches every penny or cent raised for this purpose and separately, the La Cala Lions will be funding 250 cataract operations in the African state of Mauritania through Village Ventures Africa. Helping hands As there are no Lions Clubs in some neigh-

bouring towns, La Cala Lions also supports the private organisation Adintre in Fuengirola which feeds up to 250 people on a regular basis and Encina Laura in Alhaurin de la Torre which helps disabled people to have a better life. Last word Julie told the RTN “I love La Cala de Mijas because it retains a lot of the original Spain although it is being built up again. I just hope that it doesn’t become so big that Spanish residents decide to leave.” Customers and volunteers are always welcome at the La Cala Lions charity shop at Calle Torremolinos and if you wish to help or donate any items please call 677 05 90 61.

Return of the witchfinders by

Michael Walsh

It is a myth that the Victorians were prudish. Their age was exciting, innovative and libertarian. For this reason, many great novels and poems, such as Rudyard Kipling verse, is now taboo. Scratch the surface of the mob and one is sure to find the mediaeval mind-set. I would not dignify bigots by describing them as ignorant; they are politically corrupt. There is little that separates the selfstyled politically correct from sycophants who once applauded innocent men sentenced to death at Chairman Mao and Stalinist show trials. In the Communist Bloc ordinary people were guarded in what they wrote or said. In constant fear of denunciation few were brave enough to speak openly. Those who did lost friends, their jobs, and in most case their freedom. This is the slippery slope we slide down. A remark made without malice draws horrified reaction similar to the display of a birthmark on the breast of a yeoman’s wife. “Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness.” George Orwell. Attending a business meeting I said something which included the term ‘coloured’. The group looked at each other with horrified expressions. Baffled, I asked if I had said something wrong. Someone broke the silence. “You don’t use the term coloured anymore.” Defensively, I replied, “I have no objection to being described as white. The description was relevant to what I was saying; how else could I describe the person?” I was told that I must never describe a person by their ethnicity even if asked by the police to offer a description of a person. I am reminded of Prometheus: “whom the gods would destroy they first make mad.” A journalist in Germany receives a 6-month prison sentence for posting a picture of Hitler greeting Pal-

estinian President Haj Amin al-Hussein. In Britain, people receive police cautions for liking ‘politically incorrect’ posts on Facebook. There was a time when a man could pause to enjoy the sight of children playing. It would take a brave man to do so now. I recall a father photographing his daughter as his child played in a park. The hapless dad was invited to leave after women started calling him a paedophile. In the United States monuments to historical figures are brought crashing to the ground. Throughout the EU street names are changed because those honoured are considered politically incorrect. Yet, the most outrageous haters are witch finder generals and the mob salivating at the prospect of a lost career. Robert Burns: “Here's freedom to him who would speak; here’s freedom to him who would write; for there's none ever feared that the truth should be heard; save he who the truth would indict.”

Canalside life

It was one of those days when you could sense the spring in your step and the feeling that: ‘Hey, it’s not such a bad old life after all.’ The sun was shining as usual, and there was a cooling breeze that was just enough to make our morning walk along the canal perfect. A cyclist came hurtling towards us; a man of about my age, so no age at all really, clad in a spectacular outfit. Hat, shorts, shirt and even socks were a kaleidoscope of colour. He looked as if he had been decorated with Quality Street wrappers all stitched together by Stevie Wonder. As he got near, he waved at us in an enthusiastic way which had the effect of him partially losing control and bumping off into the overgrown area to one side. But with the big smile still on his face, he hopped back on, chortled ’Ooops’ and pedalled off like a streak of psychedelic lightning. The pair of ducks that sometimes patrolled that section of canal – Romeo and Juliet we christened them – had not been seen for some time, but there was Juliet with six fairly large, healthy looking ducklets. She and Romeo it seemed, had consummated the partnership and found a safe haven away from the dark intentions of any cleaver brandishing Chinese chef looking to in-

crease profits. The luxuriant weed growth providing food for the carp, swayed seductively in the current and it’s a pity that the periodic dredging destroys this stuff, driving the fish away. But it’s only temporary and here they are again, not that big by normal carp standards, but up to a kilo or two in weight if I’m any judge. Yet more temptation for unscrupulous restaurateurs, fed up with the escalating price of merluza. We exchanged pleasantries with other walkers and

cyclists along the way, but there’s always one exception. An athletic looking lady with muscles on her teeth and blond hair tied back resembling a plaited loaf, approached. Pumping two ski poles and staring purposefully ahead, she was a formidable sight. With a glare that would have frozen lava and looking as if she wanted to singe off our hair before skewering us on her poles and spit roasting us, she charged on. And all we had said was: ‘Hi, lovely morning’. All in all though, one of those days when everything seemed right with the world.

The southern coast of Spain is a country within a country. Like London or New York, it exists alone, a law unto itself. It has its own rules and rhythm and its own way of doing things. On the morning of our story the coast awoke in a tepid daze, the Mediterranean flat as a dusty mirror, banks of low cloud drifting in over the chiringuitos and dampening the canopies of the hillside allotments. Down on the beaches the hammock-vendors sprayed the sand in the hope of one more hot day: they´d been enjoying an Indian summer. In Malaga, cars formed rushhours queues into the city while joggers stretched their calves on the low sea wall in Estepona. Shutters clattered up on the Nerja cafés. Benidorm doorsteps were swept and mopped. Smoking, sunburnt fishermen winched their nets up in La Caleta, gulls hovering yet still, hungry black eyes staring. High above the Malaga Mountains a twin-engine Cessna left a vectoring, everdiffusing trail of ice particles in its wake. A door was open on its glinting, sunlit, sea-ward side and a figure in black appeared, leaping suddenly out, spreadeagled, away from the plane. In Colmares, an elderly Brit who´d been up since five with gout pains, called out to a passing neighbour, an even older Spaniard, coming back from a walk. They put their hands to their brows and watched as a parachute opened and the bulky, twitching figure rocked from side to side until it meshed with the dark peaks. By then the mist had mostly cleared, the sun had risen and the Mediterranean was its usual brilliant, diamond-encrusted blue. “I´ll call the police,” old Ramón mumbled, tipping his stick and walking on. The cicadas had started. The day had broken. Our story was underway.

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was questioned over the Gurtel corruption trial in the Spanish Congress on Wednesday in a session in which he failed to give any explanations to opposition parties. Rajoy had been cited to appear in Congress by the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), Unidos Podemos, Republican Left, and the Mixed Group (which is made up of minority parties), but offered no explanations over the Gurtel scandal during his intervention. Rajoy’s governing Peoples Party (PP) is deeply implicated in the

investigation of a kickbacksfor-contracts scheme that is alleged to have helped finance the PP’s election campaigns and other party expenses. The Prime Minister made history when he appeared as a witness in the case in court at the end of July, the first serving Spanish leader to testify in such a way. On Wednesday, Rajoy said there was “no impunity for corruption in Spain”, insisting that Congress was not the place to discuss cases such as Gurtel. “The irregularities are sanctioned where they have to be sanctioned: in court and in

the ballot box,” he added. Rajoy said his appearance was an “inquisition” by the opposition parties which “led nowhere”. “They have the right to ask for me to appear,” he said, but insisted that the opposition had only thought about “their political needs” rather than those of the country, which he said were currently “international terrorism, nationalism and the economy.” “My obligation is to govern and I will continue to do that,” said Rajoy, adding that his party had approved “dozens of laws” to combat corruption.

COULD the pound fall in value so much that it is worth only one euro? Sterling has never fallen that low before, even at the height of the financial crisis. At its lowest, in the depths of the credit crunch in late 2008, it still bought €1.03. The most expensive bureaux de change at the airport do offer less than €1 and the market rate could be heading that way soon. At the time of printing, the pound can buy €1.0816, up from a low of €1.0745 earlier this week. Forecasters at HSBC expect the pound to fall to parity with the euro in the final three months of 2017 and to stay there well into next year.

SPANISH banks are cutting back. Between 2007 and 2016 they reduced staff by about 83,000 to some 195,000 and shuttered more than 16,000 branches, according to Bank of Spain data. That trend continued into the first quarter of 2017, with another 400 closing in the period. The Spanish banking landscape underwent a fundamental change over the last decade, with the fallout from the crash of the country’s housing bubble culminating in 2012, when the government asked the European Union for €41 billion to prop up its lenders. That bailout triggered a wave of

consolidation and pushed zombie institutions - those with an economic net worth less than zero that operate because their ability to repay their debts is shored up by implicit or explicit government credit support - out of business. Even after that clean-up, the push to bring down costs at banks hasn’t stopped. Lenders are facing pressure on margins stemming from a low interest rate environment, overcapacity and less business related to construction-linked activities. Still, given Spain is the most overbanked country in the euro area in terms of branches for the size of population, it has some way to go.

Composite decking is hard to beat 1. CREATE A SMOOTH SURFACE UNDERFOOT Few building materials take more punishment than decking. Whether it spends hours under scorching sunlight, withstanding wintertime blizzards or gets soaked during water fights and pool parties, your decking is bound to take abuse from the elements. Selecting

deck boards that can stand up to these harsh conditions is critical to ensuring a smooth surface underfoot. Exposure to moisture and the sun's UV rays can deteriorate wood decking, particularly if it's not maintained regularly and correctly. While composite decking provides greater durability, several brands have been known to rot, crack or warp as a result of moisture intrusion. To keep your deck looking good no matter what the weather, consider composite decking made of small-size wood fibres that are fully encased in plastic. This protects against moisture intrusion all the way to the boards core and such boards will not rot or warp, preventing dangerous cracks and splinters from forming. To create an even smoother surface, install the composite deck boards with hidden fasteners. This technique eliminates popped nails, dimples from screws and other hazards to warm-weather fun. 2. BEAT THE HEAT Once you've narrowed your composite decking selection to brands that can withstand the toughest Mother Nature can throw their way, look for ways to beat the heat. When the sun is blazing, the plastic in composite decking can retain heat and become uncomfortable to walk on with bare

feet. One great way to avoid the hot-foot hustle dance without compromising on your deck's surface appearance is to use composite decking with innovative cooling technology. By combining a durable core with a cap that is specifically engineered to optimize heat reflection and minimize heat absorption, the boards make for a more comfortable deck on sunny days. If you live in an area where the sun's rays are hot yeararound, you may also want to consider using shade structures to help provide relief from direct sunlight and reduce the temperature on deck. Pergolas, lattices and breezy overhead fabrics can block the sun beautifully and add to your deck's style. 3. PREVENT SLIPS ON DECK If you're installing decking near a pool or hot tub, live in close proximity to the water or experience frequent rain, it's also important to protect against slips. Composite deck

boards with a textured, wood-embossed surface have a higher coefficient of friction and better slip resistance than PVC and composite decking products with a nonembossed surface. The added traction will help friends and family stay steady on their feet as they enjoy your outdoor living area, and help ensure the party never has to pause for injuries.

Are you green fingered? Researchers took an in depth look into the precise time in our lives that we turn our attention to our outdoor spaces - and found that it is not until we reach 41 that we become green fingered. Up until this point, nearly three in ten adults continue to rely on elderly parents to sort out their outdoor space - with one in twenty even calling on grandparents to tend to their gardens. A further one in ten resort to watching clips on YouTube to help remedy their horticultural issues. The poll by garden tool supplier Fiskars revealed a third of clueless adults have NEVER trimmed a hedge and nearly a quarter haven’t ever potted a plant. A further 23% of the 1,500 adults polled claim to have NEVER mown a lawn or raked leaves in the garden. Botanist and broadcaster, James Wong, comments: “The study shows there

is a lack of engagement between the younger generation and gardening, but it’s so important we don’t lose that passion for our outdoor spaces. “A lack of enjoyment or interest in maintaining a garden usually stems from people not knowing where to start. That’s why developing an interest in gardening and showing the rewards that outdoor spaces can bring is essential, such as growing plants in small spaces, which can be fun and productive — you just need a little sunshine and some imagination.” A spokesman for Fiskars commented: “Getting in to gardening at the age of 41 may seem late, but with many adults not getting on the property ladder or living in flats until their late thirties, it’s becoming the norm. “Gardening can seem daunting at first and it’s only natural to want to call upon parents or grandparents who

tend to be much more knowledgeable. Our innovative range of products makes gardening easy and hassle free, helping you to reconnect with your outside space, no matter your level of skill.” Nowadays there are plenty of cuttingedge gardening tools at hand which are ideal for all types of gardeners – amateur to novice – making light work of transforming outdoor spaces. Gardening is a great hobby for people of all ages and is particularly beneficial. It’s a fun, healthy activity plus the sense of satisfaction you feel when you watch something you’ve had a hand in growing is immeasurable.” However, half of the adults that took part in the poll said they wouldn’t be able to identify a fuchsia, 40% would struggle to spot a pansy and more than half wouldn’t know a germanium when they saw one.

10 who-knew uses for aluminum foil We already know that aluminium foil is a kitchen musthave, but its metallic, pliable structure makes it super-useful all over the house. Here's why you should stock up:

Line cabinets and drawers Not only is the foil easy to clean with a damp sponge, but it will help reflect light in a cabinet's dark corners.

Protect pie crust Worried about burning your famous apple pie? Cover the edges with a ring cut out of aluminum foil to keep the crust from getting too brown.

Make a funnel

In a pinch, create a makeshift funnel (which you can even bend to fit in tight spaces) out of a piece of foil fashioned into a cone.

Move heavy furniture

Polish silverware

With this nifty trick, a chemical reaction causes tarnish to transfer from your silver flatware to the aluminium foil. Line a plastic bin with the foil (shiny side up), and place the silver pieces inside. Pour in a 1/4 cup washing soda, and a gallon of boiling water. Stir and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

Clean the grill A ball of foil makes quick work of de-gunking a grill of any burnton barbecue leftovers.

Wrap the feet of your sofa in a few layers of heavy duty foil to help scoot it across carpet (but avoid using this trick on delicate surfaces or furniture that the foil could scratch).

Soften hard sugar When a recipe calls for a tablespoon of brown sugar but you'd need a chisel to carve it out, a little heat can help. Wrap the sugar in a piece of aluminum foil and toss it in a 350-degree oven for five minutes.

Scrub dishes

Like wire wool, a ball of aluminum foil can help clean cookware you can give a good scrub, like glass casserole dishes or cast-iron skillets.

Iron clothes faster Aluminum foil reflects heat, so try placing a sheet under your ironing board cover, to smooth wrinkles a bit quicker.

Scare away birds

Chances are you love seeing brightly coloured feathered friends around your garden, but if you have a fruit tree, you might not want birds feasting on your bounty. Like the reflective tape sold at garden centres, strips of aluminum foil hung in your tree can help keep them away.

Staying storm-safe in your home WITH storms forecast across the Costa Blanca over the next few weeks, check out RTN’s key safety tips for you, your pets and your home. There are three main ways lightning enters structures: a direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure and through the ground. Once in a structure, lightning can travel through the electrical, phone, plumbing, and radio/ television reception systems. Lightning can also travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or

flooring. • Stay off corded phones. You can use cellular or cordless phones. • Don't touch electrical equipment such as computers, TVs, or cords. Remote controls are fine. • Avoid plumbing. Do not wash your hands, take a shower or wash dishes. • Stay away from windows and doors that might have small leaks around the sides to let in lightning and stay off porches. • Do not lie on concrete floors

or lean against concrete walls. • Protect your pets: Dog houses are not safe shelters. Dogs that are chained to trees or on metal runners are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes. • Protect your home: Lightning generates electric surges that can damage electronic equipment some distance from the actual strike. Typical surge protectors will not protect equipment from a lightning strike. Do not unplug equipment during a thunderstorm as there is a risk you could be struck.

Dancing ‘til Daybreak NATIONAL treasure, Lorraine Kelly, has been spotted dancing to the small hours at Marbella’s famous Aqwa Mist club, where Craig David was performing. The 57-year-old morning TV star reportedly surprised fellow revellers, partying until 4am. One clubber told a publication, “it was incredible to see. Lorraine was dancing like someone in her twenties and looked fantastic…She was there till about 4am and was putting the youngsters to shame. Even the staff at the club were in awe that Lorraine was there showing everyone how to party. The partygoer added, ‘it was clear she adored Craig’s music and he put on a great show for her. Most people couldn’t believe it was happening!’ The presenter, who was attending one of Craig David’s TS5 parties, later tweeted her thanks to the singer, saying, “Was such a joy to be there. You are a class act. We loved it- thank you so so much!”

Costa del love TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Geordie Shore star, Vicky Pattison, has been spotted kissing husband-to-be, John Noble, in a resort in Marbella. The brunette beauty, who got engaged in June, took time out on holiday with her tailor fiancé, looking stunning in a grey zip-up one-piece swimming costume. The couple first got together around ten years ago but broke off their relationship before rekindling it earlier this year with John surprising his fiancée by getting down on one knee after only six months of dating. The stunner said the proposal “knocked her for six” as she thought the relationship might end because of their busy schedules. Following her engagement, Vicky told a publication, ‘I’m so happy personally and professionally – there’s a level of equilibrium in my life that I’ve never experienced before. He is so lovely, I’m very fortunate.”

extend to five rounds of either two or three minutes. Victoria has just returned from Thailand where she was one of 20 competitors (16 boys and 4 girls) chosen to take part in a Dutch produced reality programme where the 20 fighters lived trained and fought together with each of the girls captaining a team. Due to the terms of the contract, she was unable to reveal to RTN where her team finished but she did admit that it was a great experience and she is looking forward to seeing the programme which will initially appear on a pay to view internet channel and then will be broadcast across Europe. When asked if she could make a living out of the sport, Victoria was quite frank in her response, saying that she did, but it depended on the number of fights that she could take in a year and recently things have been a little difficult because of injuries although she is now back to form. Interestingly, now a Spanish speaker, she went to a British

school in Spain and didn’t actually become fluent until she joined the gym and needed to understand the instructions of her long- time trainer Ilve Garcia for whom she has nothing but praise. Now at the age of 26, she is considering the possibility of switching to boxing which is becoming an increasingly popular sport for professional women and she hopes to move into the Lightweight division boxing at around 59 kilos. She freely admits that she spends so much time training that she has no time for hobbies but every week likes to go with friends to the cinema to see the latest movies. As a successful athlete, she is teetotal (alcohol has never attracted her) and her diet consists of natural ingredients based around chicken, rice and fruit. This quietly spoken and charming young woman likes to do her talking in the ring and hopes that she can look forward to a new career as a boxer.

By Michael Cano WHEN Victoria Lomax realized that she had hit 100 kilos, she decided that she needed to lose weight which led to her becoming a two time World Champion. Victoria who moved to Spain with her parents and brother from the UK 15 years ago decided to exercise with a purpose, so set her sights on becoming involved in the world of K1 which is a form of Japanese kickboxing which allows the use of the knees. Travelling from her home in La Cala de Mijas (which she now shares with her brother), to the Spartan Gym in Fuengirola, she reduced her weight to 55 kilos and had her first fight five years ago. Since then, she has turned professional and has won two Spanish K1 titles and two World Championship belts, beating a Mexican girl on the first occasion and then a Scottish girl in December last year, which saw her regain her belt after just two rounds. Although normal fights cover three two minute rounds, major fights

contributed our ideas and we want it to be a bit different so I want to take the opportunity to invite everyone to attend.” Alicia Iranzo explained, “it has a super special meaning, because I am going to be performing next to my colleagues,” adding, “as well as bringing together lots of different ideas beacsue we each have a different style, we have all become friends.” Loli Romero de Chasse explained The the performance could bring dancers: together tens of people on are preparing stage, saying, “it could be that as their show some point we have more than 40 people on stage. We have planned it so that it we be new and different.” Head of the Municipal Dance Group, Mari Trini, concluded, “this has been hectic because I was planning to take a few years off but my son has told me it’s time to get involved again. I am now back and doing what I love and have been doing since I was three.” The free event begins at 9.30pm on Friday October 6 before the event continues for six days, attracting horse riders and flamenco dancers to the streets of Fuengirola.

Comic interlude A FREE exhibition showcasing art by 26 young people is on display at Edifico Colores, Fuengirola until September 29. During July and August, the youngsters, aged 12 to 18 years, took part in a comic book and drawing workshop in the building, as part of the council’s Young Summer 2017 scheme. In the workshop, which was directed by illustrator and professor Erio Gallart, the students were taught how to draw figures and portraits, as well as comic book heroes, animals and manga. The pupils, who were taught two days a week, are now showing off the results of their hard work in an exhibit open until 9.30pm on September 29.

learn spanish

Agreement

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

For the few weeks we have been looking at the concepts of masculine and feminine genders in the Spanish language. We saw that a noun is a word that represents a thing or an idea and than in Spanish each of these words has a gender which we need to know about to help us form correct Spanish sentences. The gender of the noun in a sentence affects many of the words around it. We also looked at a few guidelines to help us determine what the gender of a particular noun is, but in many cases we just have to learn each one individually and gradually, knowing that if we make a few mistakes along the way it is not going to affect people’s understanding of what we say. One of the things that is affected by the gender of a word is the accompanying word for “the” and “a”. We are lucky in English as these words have only one form. “The” in Spanish actually has five forms, but only four that concern us now. These four words depend on whether they apply to masculine or feminine nouns and also whether the nouns are in the singular or plural. Let’s take a practical example – the

word for “child” or “boy” – niño, and the word for “girl” which is niña. This is how the “the” bit works: El niño - the boy; la niña - the girl; los niños - the boys; las niñas - the girls. So we have four different words for “the” (masculine singular), la (feminine singular), los (masculine plural) and las (feminine plural). Now we’ll look at the words meaning “a” or “an”. There are two of these: masculine singular un and feminine singular una. Logically we cannot have a plural of “a”. So that gives us for example “a boy” un niño and “a girl” una niña. All of these forms apply to words for things as well. Let’s use two more examples of words for things rather than people. Vestido (dress – masculine) El vestido (the dress); los vestidos (the dresses); un vestido (a dress). Camisa (shirt – feminine). La camisa (the shirt); las camisas (the shirts); una camisa (a shirt). One of the indicators of word gender we have already mentioned is the characteristic “a” ending for feminine and “o” ending for masculine nouns. Niño, niña, vestido, camisa all follow this pattern. However as I mentioned, there are other words that don’t do this at all. For example:

Reloj (clock – masculine) El reloj (the clock); los relojes (the clocks); un reloj (a clock) Pared (wall – feminine) La pared (the wall); las paredes (the walls); una pared (a wall). Notice in both these cases the words end in consonants (j and d). When this happens we make the word into plural by adding –es, rather than just –s. Now to complete this picture let’s look again at a couple of words that have endings the opposite way round from what we expect, to see how they deal with this “agreement” business. Here they come: Problema (problem – masculine) El problema (the problem); los problemas (the problems), un problema (a problem). Mano (hand – feminine) La mano (the hand); las manos (the hands); una mano (a hand). Most foreigners learning Spanish get these wrong to start with. The Spanish are quite used to people saying things like “tengo una problema” and this kind of mistake would never prevent someone from understanding that you had a problem! Just to round this up and lead on to our main point for next lesson. There are other things that are affected by

Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton A surprise hot air balloon trip is Jessie’s birthday gift to her beloved Isabel, her sister and a practicing nun. There are 13 people in the balloon, including the pilot, on this unluckiest of trips where a killer is observed in the act of committing murder. Unfortunately, he also sees them, particularly Jessie assiduously taking photographs of him on her phone. Everyone ends up dead except Jessie, something the killer intends to rectify as he hunts her down. Unable to go to the police, there is more to Jessie than we might expect as she fights to stay alive against all the odds. The remarkably well informed killer is an adept and skilled hunter, who it turns out has his own family trauma. Detective Superintendent Ajax Maldonado of Northumbria police is in charge of investigating the Hot Air Balloon

tragedy and when it becomes clear that Jessie is alive, tries to locate her to discover what occurred. With a rising body count, disturbing fears of a yellow house in the north amongst migrants, and the connections between the multiple threads becoming clearer, there is a thrilling and tense finale. This is a story of ghosts, trauma, obsession, unreliable memories and what families will do for each other. It outlines the horrors waiting to befall migrants and how a family history can come to be distorted. It is about the difficulties of coming to terms with loss and grief.

the masculine/feminine divide as well as “the” and “a”. It also influences the adjectives, or describing words, that go with the nouns. Here is what I mean: the word from “small” is pequeño. It can be applied to all the above nouns. We can talk about a small boy, girl, shirt, dress, clock, wall, problem or hand. Here are some examples of how we would do this, by making the word pequeño match the noun each time. El niño pequeño; la niña pequeña; los niños pequeños; las niñas pequeñas. El vestido pequeño, los relojes pequeños, la camisa pequeña, las paredes pequeñas. Un problema pequeño, una mano pequeña. We will start off at this point next week, as there are plenty more things to say about adjectives. See you then.

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag Kenny, what does it really mean if you dream of a death? I am dreaming that I am at the graveside but I do not know who is being buried and I wake still asking why I am there?! Paula J.K.(sms) No worries Paula! To dream of a death is to dream of a birth in the family. You will not be present at the birth however, that is why you cannot see who died in your dream! Welcome a new family member, and worry not, this dream also tells me that all will go very well. Stop worrying!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Stop waiting for things to happen and be a part of what's going on right now. Missed opportunities are down to an inability to hold back on fear; and fuelled by your coming to terms with just what it is that you really want from the Cosmos right now!

Mars trines with Uranus this weekend, bringing some intrigue into your most recent decisions. For some reason you are in fighting mood as you open doors and go to places that you have never been, with a view of making some long overdue changes to your life. Do not be angry with what comes your way, but do see what you have been missing!

The Mercury ingress steps up levels of communication and deservedly promotes you and what you are doing right now. This is a good time to be centre stage as workwise you find yourself stepping into somebody else’s shoes and doing the very best that you can too. Relationships may have been strained lately, now you can find a way of making amends!

Although you are opposite to Gemini you both have more in common than other opposing signs do. This is due to you both being mutable signs bringing compatability. Adapting to changes brought about this week is the name of the game, and you could make this very easy or play on making it difficult for all those who are truly concerned.

Opposites attract this week. As both Uranus and Mercury make a beeline to Mars, your opposing sign of Scorpio is reflecting your negative energies and sending you back to where you should be right now. Do not worry if this brings on an unsettling feeling; you have to experience things and start to see them the way that others seem to be seeing.

The entry of Mars sets the cat amongst the pigeons but also sorts the men from the boys too! An affair of the heart has brought you some sleepless nights, but fear as such cannot live in a healthy body. Taking a step forward is the thing to do, as the portents across the Cosmos back you and all that you do right now. In the end though, you choose!

Taking risks and getting a lucky chance are very much fuel for your fire this week, as a green light sees you making a very swift decision based on the issues concerned. Though you can see things from both angles, this is a time to unite, and what is needed is a strong defence, brought about by care and consideration, for all domestic matters of care.

Mercury sends out a very strong message on your behalf that you are not to be messed with. A delicate situation has been avoided by your innermost good intention and application. Having saved the day, now Mercury is in conjunction with Mars to ensure you a very smooth way through for a well deserved month of blissful fun to come!

As Venus directs towards Pluto and all seems to be lost, remember that your idealistic ways are brought about by calm and peace. In your opposing sign there is activity not matched by the sheer power of your passivity; and your contribution of silent power is much needed now to get a good result. Have your way, because you know you have won.

There is no turning back the clock, and what has gone has gone, and cannot be brought back. Silence now on your behalf will be seen as very negative behaviour, so have your say and be dammed. Send out that strong message that you strongly disapprove of recent events, but that you are the very best shoulder to cry on when the time comes. It will!

You have started and so too must you finish. It is time to put much behind you, but that will not stop you from having the very last say on the matter. Just as somebody leaves your friendship this week, so somebody steps up, as an acquaintance pulls out all the stops and shows their utmost support and loyalty to you. Ceres squares on Kora to boot!

A wonderful week in which many a niggling problem is shared, halved or disappears from the agenda. You are so right to stick up for yourself, but you have a uniquely psychic way of dealing with problems in a spiritual, hands on way. Ready for confrontation and fuelled by emotion, someone will get their comeuppance very soon!

A double whammy links your planetary leader, Neptune with the Sun in opposition, and a brief midweek encounter with Venus. This ammunition supports a recently applied for permit and will be the start of the changes that you make that will help you financially in the months ahead. Play the waiting game, but expect the good results you need.

A wasp or hornet sting is an uncomfortable and often painful experience that is common during the warmer months when the blighters are most active and people spend more time outdoors. If a stinger is left embedded in the body, remove it as soon as possible. This should be the first step. Then, head to your kitchen cupboard and pull out a bottle of… vinegar. Yes, vinegar - wasp and hornet venom are powerful alkalines. Using an acid such as vinegar will neutralise them. It can be applied via a piece of cloth or bandaging. Make sure to keep the stings soaked for at least 15 minutes. Some vinegar will absorb through the skin and it should greatly help eliminate the discomfort.

ACCORDING to a Spanish study drinking four cups of coffee a day will make you live longer. 20,000 middle-aged people took part in the major study. It was found that those who drank coffee regularly had mortality rates almost two-thirds lower than non-drinkers. This isn't the first study that proves the benefits of drinking coffee. Previous studies found that coffee improves liver functionality. Drinkers may also have less inflammation

could prolong life. Scientists believe that coffee has the ingredients that can protect the body. Compounds such as caffeine, antioxidants and diterpenes have been proven to have a positive effect on the body in that aspect. The study was carried out in Spain over the course of 10 years. 19,986 people were included in the study with 1 in 60 of those dying in that decade. Those who drank coffee regularly had the lowest death rates.

Make shaving your face a pleasure again IT’S not always in deference to their favourite rock acts or staying up with the latest fashion for beards that some men grow their facial hair. Many prefer to look like ZZ Top rather than suffer the consequences of the discomfort or pain of shaving. Shaving is a good form of exfoliating, and getting rid of dead skin cells, but overdoing it can bring redness, cause razor bumps, and expose tender skin. To prevent this, try some of the following shaving routines.

IN A LATHER: Some men prefer stubble to smooth

and boosted immune systems. People who drank two cups a day saw as much as a 22% drop in mortality. Some older people in the study saw that rise to 30%. People who drank four cups a day had a 64% lower death risk than those who drank no coffee at all. This study could not definitively prove that drinking larger amounts of coffee is the cause of this, but it did shadow research done in the United States which suggested that three cups a day

Steamy showers Warm water softens both your hair and skin, reducing tension as your razor blade cuts your stubble. Lather up Massage shaving cream into your face and neck in a circular motion and let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes. If you want to get fancy, try a badger shave brush to help lift the hairs, soften them, and spread shaving cream evenly. Replace your razor If you feel any tugging while shaving, ditch your razor and

swap it for a new one, A lot of men use old blades that cause tiny tears in the skin that can be uncomfortable, For a standard shaver, use it about 5 to 7 times before throwing it away. Rinse and repeat Wash the razor under warm water every one to two strokes to clear away stubble and cream blocking the blade, which can cause nicks in your skin. Don’t tap the razor to shake off the cream as it can damage the blade. When you finally get your face as smooth as it was before you hit puberty, apply a moisturizer to help your skin heal.

Fighting those age- Ask the related conditions Optician

A healthy diet and lifestyle are our best weapons against age-related diseases, and for staying healthy and active throughout life. Diet has a profound impact on two of the leading causes of age-related illnesses and conditions: inflammation and being overweight. Maintaining a healthy heart and blood vessels are two of the most important things anyone can do, along with keeping one’s weight under control. Eating a healthy diet does not need to be a chore. It is all a question of smart choices. Picking the right foods not only makes a difference in health risks, but also positively affects performance throughout the day at work and at home. While the answer is not in a single food, or even a handful, adding nutrient-rich foods like some of these listed below is part of a winning game plan.

from heart disease in part by improving blood cholesterol levels.

Cherry juice Cherry juice is often taken by athletes after their workouts as its targeted antioxidants help with muscle recovery, improving recovery time. In addition, it boosts sleep quality to help prevent anxiety and stress later on in the day. Greek yoghurt Plain Greek yogurt is a nutrient-packed snack that has many health benefits. High in protein, it can boost energy and muscle mass, which decreases as we age. It can also benefit digestive health if it contains probiotics.

Beetroot The deep red root vegetable increases the size of blood vessels, thereby improving the flow of oxygen that can get to muscles and tissues. For anyone with high blood pressure or suffering from cardiovascular disease, this is a good food to include.

Milk A good hydration beverage that has protein, vitamin D and calcium like we often hear, milk also contains electrolytes for good muscle contraction.

How can we help the Deaf-Blind? Ask the Optician – Nerea Galdos, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Marbella Until the end of the year, Specsavers are raising money for the ONCE Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (FOAPS) by offering free comprehensive eye tests and asking patients to donate 1€ to FOAPS after their test. To raise awareness of the difficulties that the deaf-blind face, we wanted to dedicate this month’s column to this important topic. Who are FOAPS? FOAPS is a charitable organisation formed in 2007 by ONCE, the largest association for the blind in Spain, to develop programmes to help deaf-blind people.

Pistachios Pistachios are a multitasking nut that has proteins and healthy fats, as well as three types of antioxidants. Those antioxidants help to decrease blood pressure and allow for good muscle recovery. Large population studies show that people who regularly eat nuts, such as pistachios, have a substantial lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios may protect

What is Deaf-Blindness? This disability results from the combination of two sensory impairments – visual and hearing, which can manifest in different levels of severity. How can deaf-blind people communicate? This depends on the severity of the sight and hearing loss, many people use sign language if their vision is good enough. They can also use tactile sign language, where the deaf-blind person puts their hands over the signer’s hands to feel the shape, movement and location of the signs. FOAPS provide interpreters, who can help the deaf-blind communicate and interact with the world. What are you fundraising for? We hope that through our campaign we can raise enough money to fund an extra 400 hours of interpreting.

Encouraging advances in skin cancer drugs IT WAS only ten years ago that a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma – an advanced form of skin cancer - was synonymous with death in a short space of time. Recently, in one of the many cancer congresses held in Spain, specialists had the opportunity to meet a boy who was diagnosed with the disease five years ago, which oncologists call a long-term cancer survivor. This case, unthinkable a decade ago, is possible thanks to immunotherapy. This treatment is revolutionising the way the disease is handled and many specialists believe this milestone is greater than when chemotherapy was discovered in the 1940s. Unlike conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, immunotherapy is not directed at destroying tumour cells, but instead is to

stimulate the patient’s immune system so that it kills the offending cells. In February this year, the first immunotherapy treatments were tried on five patients in Madrid that have solid tumours with a poor prognosis and from whom a further biopsy can be taken for analysis. The Oncology department at the Alicante General Hospital is also currently taking part in the scheme, through various clinical trials, that seeks to develop new immunotherapy treatments and drugs.

How can I support the campaign? Just come into your nearest Specsavers Opticas store for an eye test and donate 1€ between now and the end of December. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store and book an eye test.

Chocolate bar reaches its peak BUDGET retail chain Poundland is set to argue in the UK courts that Toblerone reduced the value of its trade mark when it redesigned its famous chocolate bar last year. Poundland announced in June that it was releasing its own similarly mountain-inspired chocolate bar called Twin Peaks, but halted the product’s release following the receipt of a legal letter from Mondelez International, the makers of Toblerone. At the time, the British chain did not deny the influence of Mondelez’ famous product – whose shape is protected by a registered UK 3D trade mark – but rather positioned it as a response to a redesign that had not been well received by the store’s customers. The dispute between Poundland and Mondelez has now escalated to the High Court of Justice. In Poundland’s defence, the company argues that Toblerone’s trade mark has been “irretrievably abandoned” by its redesign, which

Refreshing Lemon-Ginger Dressing

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups olive oil, 1 1/4 cups lemon juice, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup minced fresh ginger, 1/2 teaspoon salt

damaged the bar’s reputation. The new-look Toblerone, which hit UK shelves in November last year, saw the gaps between the bar’s signature peaks widened. It was dubbed “wrong” and “austerity Toblerone” by tetchy social media users. In its claim, Mondelez is arguing that Poundland has infringed its trade mark both through the shape of the bar and its packaging, which sees a gold, prism-shaped wrapper stamped with a mountain logo. It says that Twin Peaks is “deceptively and confusingly similar” to Toblerone, while Poundland argues “no member of the relevant public would mistake one for the other”. Unlike Toblerone, whose pyramidal shape is said to be inspired by the Alps’ iconic Matterhorn, Poundland’s chocolate bar has a double peak that the company claims is borrowed from Wrekin Hill in Shropshire. Preparation: Preparation time and ready in 10 minutes. Method: Blend olive oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger, and salt together in a high-powered blender until smooth.

the milk, and puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Throw in a pinch of sugar if desired. Allow the soup to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled. 3. Pour the soup into 4 serving bowls. Swirl 1 tablespoon of light cream into each one, then garnish with reserved peas and sprigs of mint.

Preparation Preparation – 5 minutes. Cooking time – 35 minutes. Method 1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the 4 chopped green onions, and cook until softened, but not brown. Stir in the peas, vegetable stock, and 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh mint. Increase heat to medium, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat back to low, cover, and let simmer for about 30 minutes. If you are using frozen peas, 15 minutes is enough. 2. Using a large slotted spoon, remove about 3 tablespoons of the peas, and set aside for garnish. Less alcohol doesn’t mean less quality THE LOWER the alcohol percentage of the wine that you drink, the less you’ll feel the consequences the following day. Low alcohol wines can be a wise choice, but are there any real benefits? Most afternoon barbecues roll on into the evening, so it’s worth putting some thought into the ABV (‘Alcohol by Volume’) of the wine you’ll be drinking. After a few glasses on a hot summer’s day, the small difference between 12 and 14 per cent can have a big impact how you’re going to feel the next morning. More or less, the alcohol level of wine is linked to the amount of sugar which the grapes contain when they’re harvested. The higher the sugar, the higher the potential for alcohol, which is why warm climates like Argentina and Australia, are often associated with high-alcohol red wines (13.5 to 16 percent).

A counter-trend toward low-ABV wines is bubbling away, though, driven by people wanting to rein back on the units they consume for health or weight reasons (the higher the alcohol, the higher the calories). One in four people now cite ABV as an influence in the wine they choose and, as a result, companies are producing low-ABV spin-off ranges, such as First Cape’s ‘Cafe’ Collection (5.5 per cent) or Jacob’s Creek’s ‘Cool Harvest’ (9.5 to 11 per cent). Northern, high altitude, and cooler regions tend to be the source of low-ABV wines, and where global trends have seen many percentages of alcohol creep up, certain sparkling wines produced in Northern Italy – such as Moscato d’Asti – has stayed around the 6 per cent mark without any loss of quality.

ALDI stocks the ‘best gin in the world’ ACCORDING to the results of a recent competition, local supermarket chain ALDI stocks the best brand of gin in the world. The prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition has awarded Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin the title of the best on the market after a blind tasting. The 37.5 per cent proof spirit, which is exclusively on sale in ALDI, can be bought for only €11. The second placed gin costs €44.60 a bottle.

The gin isn’t the only alcoholic beverage ALDI stocks that have been given recent honours. According to Harpers, 19 others have received prizes from the panel of judges. Specially selected Creme de Cassis, a cream liqueur, also won the gold medal in its category and the Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Scotch whiskey and Tamova Vodka took second place in their respective areas.

10 things about Gin 1. Dutch courage, or depressant? Ever heard of the term “Dutch courage,” or perhaps the notion that gin is a depressant? Whether or not it is in fact a “depressant” may be disputed by enthusiasts, but gin is well-known for it’s calming effects. During the Thirty Years War the Dutch army was apparently aware of this side-effect, as they were known to ration portions to their soldiers prior to battle to calm their nerves. 2. Got scurvy? English battle is also to thank for the gimlet. It is well known that limes were used to prevent scurvy amongst soldiers during the 1800s. What is less commonly discussed is the fact that English navy men were also given rations of gin each day. The gimlet was, in fact, invented by a navy doctor and enjoyed (not surprisingly) by everyone on board. The gin was believed to fortify, and the lime juice to keep scurvy at bay. 3. Gunpowder, please. Along those lines, does the term “Navy strength” ring a bell? You may well have

tried a Navy Strength variety of your favourite gin. Besides enjoying a good gimlet, the navy is said to have used gunpowder to ensure the gin they were receiving was high quality. The gin would be poured onto gunpowder, and the strength confirmed by seeing how well it lit. Now that’s some serious standards! 4. Your waistline will thank you Diet cocktail please. If you’re watching your waistline but don’t want to give up the cocktails, try a gin and tonic or soda. Amongst the lowest caloric cocktails, a gin and soda will cost you only around 100 calories, and the popular gin and tonics around 120. If you can alternate with water while you’re at the bar, a night out won’t ruin your diet at all. 5. Juniper is loaded with antioxidants Although technically a seed, as with its nearly identical twin the blueberry, juniper berries are loaded with antioxidants. The bitter seed is effective in fighting infection, aiding digestion, and relieving bloating. A glass of gin might be just what the doctor ordered!

6. The local chemist used to prescribe it… The benefits of gin have been known from the beginning of its existence. While the exact origin is debated, we do know that it was widely available in European pharmacies in the 17th century, and used to treat ailments from kidney infections to stomach aches. Its popularly soon became so rapid that a gin shop could be found on every corner in England. 7. It’s one of the finer things in life… Gin is truly for the refined palette. Despite its widespread production, gin’s essential ingredient, juniper berry, is grown wild, and very seldom cultivated. Similar to the way that truffles are collected, juniper berries must be foraged in the woods and hand picked. 8. Gin was almost endangered Juniper is also a fragile species. For a number of years, up until quite recently, gin lovers across the UK were given a fright. It was reported that a widespread fungus was attacking juniper berries, and hikers and foragers were asked to report

sightings of the trees to assess the damage. However, as of early 2017, experts report that millions of seeds have been “banked” and that the future of gin is secure. 9. One for the books… The first-ever book of cocktail recipes, William Terrington’s Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks published in 1869, contained a gin cocktail using ginger syrup, bitters, and orange curacao as mixers. Sounds tasty! 10. Gin is to thank for Dr. Suess! And last, but certainly not least, gin is responsible for the pen name of beloved children’s author Dr. Suess. Born Theodor Suess Geisel, as a young man the writer was editor of a campus newspaper during his years at Dartmouth University. He was fired from his role after being caught smuggling gin into his dorm room (it was 1925 and in the middle of the unfortunate years of US prohibition). Determined to continue writing, he submitted all of his articles using just the name “Suess,” and later added “Dr.” to the beginning.

AUTHOR - Janice Formichella Janice Formichella is an American gin enthusiast currently traveling in Bali, Indonesia and living in Melbourne, Australia. She loves history, hiking, and an icy cold gin and soda with a wedge of cucumber.

Drive time for Ford EVER DELAYED starting a car journey until you have chosen just the right music for your trip? Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard has the answer. His new track “Momentum” incorporates the latest scientific thinking into the music choices that can boost mood on our daily drives.

According to a study commissioned by Ford with Spotify and New York University (NYU), music with a driving beat is best. Surprisingly, sad tunes that have a melancholy feel work just as well as happier tracks. For his track, Goddard consulted Amy Belfi, a cognitive neuroscientist from NYU, who

conducted the new research into the science of sound and emotion while on the move; the resulting track is an atmospheric homage to his love of great driving soundtracks. “I was inspired to create a gentle disco piece that’s quietly optimistic in mood

rather than full-on euphoric,” Goddard said. “I started thinking of times I’ve been driving home late from DJing gigs all over the U.K. Listening to music in the car when there are no interruptions and you can really crank the system up – that’s when I’ve had some of my best musical experiences ever. “I wanted to make the track quite free and give that sense of collective energy that can make an audience lose its mind when you get it right.” Belfi’s research revealed that the right choice of music on the morning commute could boost driver mood for up to two hours. Further tracks designed to put a lasting smile on our faces as we make the journey to and from work will follow from German electro-dance duo Mat.Joe and soulful British artist NAO. Each track will be accompanied by a video produced by VICE, showing the evolution of each tune. “We were excited to share the results of this scientific insight with the artists to give them the opportunity to create something special,” said Marcel Breker, engineer, Ford of Europe. “The immersive B&O PLAY system in the all-new Fiesta gives drivers the perfect space to listen to these exciting new adventures in sound.”

Check out the new ’67 registrations

THE MOTOR Ombudsman is urging motorists to do their homework when it comes to narrowing down their ideal car and retailer ahead of the introduction of the new ’67-registration on 01 September. With so much choice on offer, which can be daunting for some, the automotive dispute resolution provider has compiled the following top tips to guide motorists through the new car purchase process. In the digital age, the internet makes it simple to compare and see first-hand customer feedback about a car or a retailer. Therefore, read and watch some road tests to get an idea of what a make or model is like, and shop around to find out what you can get for the money that you have put aside for the car.

With electric vehicles fast gaining popularity, there are different factors to take into consideration compared to when buying a petrol or diesel-powered car. Look at what range is covered between charges, where the main charging points are along your regular routes, in addition to what the cost is to replenish the battery from empty, and how long it takes. This can determine which models will best suit your lifestyle. Get a quote for having a charging system installed at home if you have off-road parking. After you have narrowed down your selection, taking a car for a test drive is one of the best ways to find out whether it’s right for you, especially to familiarise yourself with built-in technology such as the infotainment and satellite naviga-

tion systems. On the day of collection, take the time to have a walk around the car before leaving the forecourt. The bodywork should be free of any scratches and scuffs, and the specification should be in-line with what you ordered. Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “In-depth research is critical when it comes to buying a new car as it’s a significant purchase. It’s therefore essential that the vehicle itself ticks all the boxes, and it’s just as vital that consumers have the confidence that the retailer will provide them with the highest level of service and quality during the purchase process and beyond.”

TWO YOUNG Spanish footballers have left a club in Northern Ireland after complaining about the state of their accommodation. Álex Gil and Toni Jiménez – both from Cordoba – were taken on by the Portuguese manager of Sofía Farmer FC and part of the deal was for them to be found somewhere to live. What they were provided with was a house that initially had no electricity with broken beds and dirty mattresses, and for that pleasure they were charged the princely sum of €550 a month in rent. However, it wasn’t long before they found out that the club was allegedly renting the flat for only €363 and keeping the balance. This was only discovered after the Spanish players accidentally found a copy of the contract when they were cleaning. “It was clearly a fraud, and all that after having been dumped and left to our fate in a strange town from the moment we arrived,” complained Álex Gil. “But thanks to the hospitality of other Spaniards in the area, we

didn’t have to sleep on the street. “We spent 12 days trying to find the money to eat, and in the end we realised we’d been ‘had’ and went home to Spain.” Sofía Farmer FC has so far not commented on the Córdoba players’ claims.

A popular Spanish Villa FORMER VALENCIA footballer David Villa has been recalled to the Spanish national team for the next series of international fixtures. At the age of 35, many players would be planning their retirement from the game but the popular Villa has been selected by manager Julen Lopetegui to be part of the Spain squad that is taking on Italy and Liechtenstein in the World Cup qualifiers that begin tomorrow (Saturday). His last international appearance was three years ago during the disappointing World Cup match in Brazil when the then holders were embarrassingly beaten by footballing minnows Australia. “They didn’t call me up three years ago...but I always dream of wearing the national team shirt again,” Villa admitted. This latest selection could allow Villa to reach the coveted 100 caps for his country – he’s currently on 97 – and held the record for the most goals scored for Spain, with Caption: 59. He’s got some way to go the BACK HOME: beat Iker Casillas who is the most Spain’s capped player in the history of the David Villa national team, with a record of aiming for 100 caps 167 matches.
