by Michael Cano THERE can be no suggestion that new Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz and her council have not hit the ground running as they take action to clean up the city’s reputation. Within a matter of days, she has made it clear that she intends for Marbella to regain its status as a reputable and safe place for residents and visitors and will not put up with practises which please the few to the detriment of the many. Worried by the reputation that Puerto Banus has recently had, with bands of drunken youths moving from bar to bar, prostitutes blatantly offering their
wares and some violence on the streets, the mayor has reacted to complaints from the local trader’s association. Banus has for years been considered an upmarket area with some of the most important brands opening shops in the marina which attract the rich and famous from around the world but it has been said that at least 10 companies are thinking of closing. A deputation from the council has already spoken local traders and has agreed to meet on a regular basis with the aim of implementing new policies to improve the security, cleanliness and image of the area. The mayor has had a formal meeting
Mayor Muñoz addressing the Marbella Local Police
with the Local Police pledging her support for the organisation, stating “Marbella has a very good Local Police and the fact that at some point there has been some dysfunction has not been for lack of professionalism, which is absolute, but was due to poor management .” There are clearly a number of areas where the new council believes that the previous incumbents had fallen down, especially in promoting the sophisticated image of the city and this is personified in the decision it has taken with regards to the Sisu Boutique Hotel just outside of San Pedro Alcantara. Local beer brings it home Photo Caption: Shutterstock
Cerveza Victoria is returning home to Malaga with a new €6 million factory. by Juliana Marlow THE new Cerveza Victoria plant in Malaga was inaugurated yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) following a whopping €6 million investment. The Damm group, who bought the brand back in 2011 from Heineken, gave local business representatives and politicians a first glimpse of the new factory on Avenida Velazquez and answered questions about the venture. Although Victoria Cerveza continued to be marketed as a Malagan beer, in 1994 the company changed site to Murcia when the original plant on the Guadalhorce estate closed. The Cerveza Victoria brand was originally founded by Ricardo and Luis Franquelo on September 8, 1928, coinciding with the day of Malaga’s public saint, and became one of the country’s most popular beers in the 60s. It seemed particularly symbolic that nearly 90 year later to the day, the beer’s production returned to its origins. The factory sits on an area of over 3,300 square metres and has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 litres of beer a day. Forty employees will work at the site across the four areas – fermentation, packaging, distribution and the museum. After twenty years, the beer’s famous slogan “Malagueña y Exquisita” (Exquisite and Malagan) makes sense once more.

Crossing the aisle THREE councillors in Benalmadena who were expelled from the Ciudadnos party have joined new group, Contigo.
Bernardo Jiménez, Oscar Ramundo and Beatriz Olmedo, were removed from their original party after coming to an agreement with left-leaning PSOE. They have now joined the new party, which is an offshoot of Contigo Somos Democracia (CSD). According to media reports, the three have already held their first few
meetings as Contgio and begun promoting the party on social media. The group say their policies will be centrist and are gearing up for the next municipal elections in two years time with the aim of taking votes from Ciudadanos. They are also preparing to hold their first national conference in Granada in October. Since being expelled, the councillors have held council roles in urban planning, personnel and mobility, while Bernardo Jimenez is Contigo’s new
spokesman. Ciudadanos are now left without any representatives in the council despite winning 10 per cent of the vote at the last election.

Anti-terror measures taken by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA’S Mayor has met with officials to discuss tightening anti-terror measures following attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. The meeting, which was attended by a subdelegate from Malaga’s Government, Miguel Briones, Ana Mula, the Mayor of Fuengirola, and high level figures from the National Police, Local Police, Guardia Civil, traffic officers and fire services after the terror alert was placed at Level IV. Mr Briones explained, "we need to intensify our information work and work on collaboration and coordination among the police forces, for which the support and work of local councils and local police is vital, by implementing new measures and reinforcing emergency plans.” He added, "areas with the most traffic and large crowds should be reinforced with the installation of more physical barriers, as well as on streets and in tourist areas.” Ana Mula explained, "we have been holding these meetings from time to time so that there is always coordination between our institution and the different state bodies and security forces.” She added, "as a result of the events in Barcelona, this Monday we brought together the Local Security Board to
put different proposals and possible security measures on the table.” She said, "obviously, this meeting has highlighted the need for coordination between institutions (CNP, Civil Guard, Local Police, Fire and Traffic), working together, sharing information and, in some way, be able to adopt a series of technical measures to enhance security in the area.” She added she wanted resident to “know that we are working in a joint and coordinated way and we have also looked at different measures.” The meeting was convened on the instructions of the Ministry of the Interior and the Bureau of the Anti-Terrorist State Pact after the latest attacks in the city of Barcelona and Cambrils on August 17. The incidents began at around 5pm on Barcelona’s main tourist street, Las Ramblas, when a white van travelled down the road at high speed, apparently deliberately mowing down pedestrians for around half a kilometre, killing 14 and injuring tens. At 1am, a second incident took place when a white Audi A3 ploughed into people in the tourist resort of Cambrils, around 68 miles south of Barcelona, injuring six, including one police officer. Following the Cambrils attack, police shot dead four jihadists and injured one. So-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks.
The advertising for this hotel makes it clear that it is aimed at the young, clubbing end of the spectrum where money is not a major factor but partying is! Hundreds of complaints from local residents about noise had allegedly been ignored by the former mayor with pool party’s and pumping music taking place day and night which caused distress and irritation in the local area.
Now there will be no new music licence granted to the hotel which means that bookings may be reduced although in fairness, there are still plenty of beach bars along the coast where it is possible to spray champagne and listen to loud music. It is clear however that the new mayor has her own agenda which she intends to implement at the earliest possible opportunity to make Marbella a better place.

Pool drowning A 72-YEAR-OLD man has died after drowning in a pool of a hotel in Benalmadena. The man reportedly went into cardiorespiratory arrest at around 2.15pm, prompting a witness to call the emergency services. Health workers, the National Police and Local Police all attended the incident, which took place on Avenida del Sol.

by Jemima Roberts MIJAS is putting together a project promoting equality through music by putting together a list of non-sexist songs to be used at fairs and festivals. The initiative, Enjoy music and equality, will weed out sexually aggressive music in order to “promote attitudes and behaviour based around respect, equality and impendence at festivals,” according to Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona. Around 200 pieces of music from different genres have been put together as an alternative to those that “denigrate” women. Councillor Carmona explained, “although we often hear, we do not listen and the messages contained in them do not promote patterns of behaviour which should be encouraged.” She added songs including Bebe’s Ella, and Run the World by Beyonce, are better at promoting equality. The move is not the first by a
council keen to encourage equality between the sexes. The town hall is now considering a series of female names following a school campaign to increase the number of streets in the town named after women. Local women’s associations have been sending in proposals after the council decided to name all new roads after illustrious women following a project entitled Merezco una calle (I deserve a street), carried out by students at Mijas’ IES Cartima school, which found the number named after women is 42, compared to 178 named after men. The students carried out research of 220 road names and found that of the few streets named after women, a remarkable 60% took the name of saints rather than famous female figures. Mari Carmen Carmona, met with Rosa Liarte, a teacher from IES Cartima, last month to discuss the campaign, commenting, “we found it very interesting because it shows it still takes so much for women

to be noticed. The council want to prioritise equality which is why we wanted to get involved with the project Rosa has presented to us.” The campaign began in an equality and social change class when students were dealing with the issue of “backdoor sexism.” Through their research they found the number of streets named after men
was almost four time the amount named after women. Ms Liarte explained “the children questioned whether sexism still existed so I set out to analyse the streets of Cartama to see how many of them had a man's name and how many women, and when they saw the results, the children could not believe it.” Now both the students and their
teacher are campaigning to the council, and have caught their attention after carrying out an analysis of Mijas’ roads. The council has now committed to using women’s names for any new roads built in the extension of Las Lagunas and are taking suggestions on the names of important female figures from students.

A worker improving Mijas’ parks and gardens
by Richard Johnson MIJAS Council has completed works to remodel Parque de Osunillas. The improvement project carried out over recent months included the replacement and renewal of the rubber flooring of the children's play area, the installation of a new slide, the installation of an adapted swing and extending the leisure and green spaces, at the request of residents. The Councillor of Parks and Gardens, Roy Perez, visited the park, explaining, "we continue to work on the leisure spaces in our municipality and responding to the requests of locals,” adding, “in the case of Parque de Osunillas we have extended the leisure area and improved green areas in response to comments by residents that the space was not properly maintained after being neglected by the previous council.” After replacing around 80 metres of rubber flooring, the council levelled the space next to the football field and in-
stalled a fence around the sports court. Councillor Perez added, "these improvements will allow residents to enjoy the park at its best and it will now comply with safety measures.” He explained works had now also been completed in Parques Antonio Machado, Fernan Caballero, Maria Zambrano and Butibamba. He said, "in all of them, particular emphasis has been placed on safety and the location of adapted furniture, since accessibility is a fundamental priority which we will continue to improve, to make our parks inclusive spaces for the enjoy all on equal terms.” The councillor confirmed the council will "continue to keep an eye on these outdoor recreation spaces and responding to the demands of locals." The works come after Mijas Council put together a team to clean the municipality’s parks and playgrounds over July and August. Laura Moreno, Complementary Services Councillor, visited Parque el Abuelo alongside Roy Perez to check
on the works. Councillor Moreno commented, "after launching an initiative to clean all children’s play areas in November, we decided to intensify the work over the summer months,” adding the project, “began in July and is expected to run until September.” She added, "we are also cleaning the perimeter of all parks in response to demand from residents, and we are particularly focusing on entrances to parks where we have observed mess from pets.” In addition to cleaning, the council is also landscaping the parks. Councillor Perez explained, "we have just planted 700 plants in Parque El Abuelo, as well as renovating the irrigation system, and we have also started to reseed the grass, which was badly deteriorated.” He added, "together with remodelling several parks like Osunilla, this is another example of the council’s commitment to providing improved leisure spaces, with well-kept gardens and furniture suited to the space.”
THE REGISTRATION period for enrolling for courses at the Popular University is open until Tuesday, September 12. Hiplito Zapico, Councillor for Education, explained, "after the first enrolment period for language courses, dance, music, craft and other concluded on July 14, a second enrolment period is now open for those who are not registered in the municipality.” Those interested in enrolling in one of these workshops and who are not registered in the municipality will have until Tuesday to submit their paperwork. Councillor Zapico commented, "during the 2016/2017 academic period we had about 2,000 students, and we hope to increase this number thanks to the introduction of new workshops next year, as we did this year with the creation of the violin or electric guitar course and a
Japanese workshop.” The councillor added the prices of workshops and courses will remain the same as last year, although the payment method has been simplified. Councillor Zapico explained now, "users who want to can now pay for the course in full or quarterly, bringing savings for users.” He concluded he wanted to "encourage residents and locals to find out about the great variety of courses offered by the Popular University, with workshops for all ages and tastes, as well as invite them to send us their suggestions on new courses they would be interested in.”
Hipolito Zapico: encourages everyone to enroll
Sporting chance NURIA RODRIGUEZ, Mijas’ Councillor for Sports, has announced the beginning of a new sports season, and revealed she expects more than 50,000 people to get involved with the activities on offer. Councillor Rodriguez explained, "for us, it is a point of pride that the number of athletes has increased with each season. Mijas continues to be an example in sports and the council will continue working to
improve our facilities. in short, we are very happy there is a greater number of athletes in the city, is a good sign.” The School of Athletics has now begun its programme of activities, putting on Basketball, Table Tennis, Karate, Judo, Swimming, and Rhythmic Gymnastics classes, among others. The school of soccer continues being the most popular in the municipality.

Kidnapper detained on European arrest warrant A 36-YEAR-OLD Lithuanian man has been arrested in Las Tortugas, Marbella, on a warrant issued by his home country. The man is now awaiting a hearing at the Court of Central Instructions after he allegedly worked with another person to stop a driver, kidnap them and demand a ransom. He was arrested at his home in Marbella by the Provincial Police, whom he initially told he was Bulgarian. After being unable to provide any documents to prove his nationality, police carried out an identity check and ascertained he was wanted under European arrest warrant and detained him. The arrest comes following a spate of similar events in which Spanish police have foiled foreign criminals hiding out on the Costa del Sol. Last month, the leader of Russia’s largest drug trafficking gang in Estonia was arrested in Mijas following a joint operation between Spanish and Estonian police. The Estonian authorities began investigating the gang more than two years ago but stepped up their work after the leader of the Russian criminal world in Estonia was assas-
sinated by an accountant in September 2016, sparking a violent turf war. Police believe the man moved to Spain to avoid falling victim to assassination in the wake of increasing gang violence in Estonia, as well as to establish a power base there for drug trafficking, money laundering and other crimes. The Spanish and Estonian authorities soon started working together, investigating the gang’s activities in Spain, and ascertaining its leader was issuing orders to members in Estonia. Officers searched the man’s house and found accounting documents, hidden cash, computers, an axe and a large knife hidden under his pillow. Meanwhile in June, a 39-year-old Danish man was arrested in Fuengirola for sexual exploitation of minors. The man turned himself to officers sitting in their vehicle, explaining he was tired of living on the run. The police proceeded to check the man’s identity, and on finding out he was wanted on a European arrest warrant, arrested him. In addition to his sexual crimes, which involve sexual contact with an underage person and sexually assaulting a woman, as well as scamming a total of €73,138 from his vic-

Europol headquarters, The Hague, Netherlands tims, buying mobile phones, cars, bank loans and other goods with the money. He is also believed to have stolen €6,327 in money and jewellery across his burglaries. If convicted, he faces eight years in prison under Danish law. The same month, a 51-year-old Latvian
man has been arrested in Torremolinos for drug trafficking after becoming the subject
of a European arrest warrant put together by police in France for his alleged involvement in transporting drugs between Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and France, where he lived until September 2011. The accused, who is originally from Latvia’s capital, Riga, was detained by police in Torremolinos after emerged he was running a restaurant near Calle Dean Juan Espino.

Accident waiting to happen? by Sally Underwood AN ACCIDENT at a playground in Torremolinos has prompted outrage from locals who have criticised the poor condition of children’s facilities. Two girls and one woman were injured when a swing fell down in La Bateria Park, leaving one of the girls in hospital with two leg injuries, while the other girl, aged 5, was treated for back pain. Her mother was hit on the arm as she tried to stop the structure falling on the children and is now unable to move three of her fingers. The woman explained, "it was a good thing I had instinctively put my arm up because the bar went directly towards the girls' head.” Police tape now seals off the swingset while the girl’s mother says she is considering denouncing the town hall, claiming the set "was rotten inside", adding, "after it came down we could see the condition of it and it is a shame. If I had known before I would not have taken my daughter to the park.” The council, however, claim the swing came down "because ten children were on it at the same time,” something which the mother denies, saying, "there were only four children on the attraction, it seems outrageous that they want blame them.” Reportedly there are no signs in parks in Torremolinos warning of weight limits for the rides. A trampoline was also sealed off by police, leaving the condition of several children’s parks up for debate at the council’s next meeting amid claims of splinters, rust and uneven ground. Margarita del Cid, a spokes-
woman for the Partido Popular (PP), said that "due to the deterioration of the parks" her party will ask "again for a comprehensive review of all elements" of the facilities. She claimed municipal workers "have on many occasions asked for tools to carry out the necessary work to keep the parks in perfect condition but have not received a reply.” It is not the only controversy over playgrounds on the Costa del Sol. In May, over 500 parents signed a petition demanding the replacement of the playground in the Hacienda Manila area of La Cala del Moral. The playground had been disman-
tled without warning before Easter owing to its “bad condition”, with the council saying at the time it would be replaced “soon.” Patience amongst residents wore thin, however, and they delivered their petition to the town hall, demanding action. Concha Ramos, one of the mothers concerned about the move said she had met with the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Ezequiel Carnero, who explained the park was taken down because it was "very deteriorated, with screws and nails coming out, which was a clear danger for little ones."

AN intoxicated man was arrested after reportedly threatening and assaulting police. The 55-year-old was found sprawled on a pavement in Malaga City Centre, apparently reeking strongly of alcohol and cannabis. Officers approached the man and requested documentation but received no answer. The man had a bumbag attached to him and one of the officers decided to look in it to see if there was any form of identification or information regarding healthcare. Upon this closer inspection the seemingly inebriated man allegedly sprung to life, punching the policeman in the groin and seizing him by the neck until the other
officer was forced to intervene and help restrain the man. Following a search, police found the man to be in possession of a large piece of hashish as well as a pipe that contained remnants of marijuana. During transfer to the health centre, the man reportedly claimed to be a social worker and made threats to the officers that he would find out where they live and destroy the lives of their children. After seeing a doctor, he was detained and taken to holding cells pending further investigation. Both officers were treated by medical staff for injuries incurred during the altercation.
She added, "he told me that they were looking at installing a new one, but that they had to ask for several budgets before hand.” She explained the park, which is located near the Nuestra Señora del Rosario church and Supersol, was "very important" because it was a "very pleasant area with many trees, and in winter was comfortable for children, better than on the promenade.” Antonio Sanchez, the Councillor for Operation Services, reassured parents that because it was a small park, “it is an investment the council can comfortably make.”
Holiday hell TWO British girls claimed to have been held hostage and robbed in Marbella. Friends Rae Breakwell and Paige Mitchell told British media that upon entering their pre-booked Airbnb (an online international rental service) apartment, they found it to be inhabited by two girls who were passed out. Rae and Paige went out, leaving their suitcases, and returned to find their belongings strewn across the room. An argument ensued as the other two girls allegedly became aggressive, causing Rae to flee. Rae escaped but the girls apparently locked Paige in the apartment. She dived into a cupboard and called the police, fearing that a kitchen knife was going to be used against her, eventually managing to escape. Airbnb are looking into the incident but have insisted that cases such as this are extremely rare.

€30m underspend
Model town
by Richard Johnson MIJAS Council has revealed it will finish the financial year with tens of millions of Euros left over. According to media reports, data from the second quarter of the year shows the council is set to have a healthy surplus at the end of the year owing to "responsible management of the municipality and account keeping which has brought stability to the budget.” The underspend has allowed the council to lower taxes in Mijas from 2018, as revealed in last week’s RTN, at a cost of around €5 million to the municipality. According to the town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, “the money will revert back to the people of Mijas who will be able to feel the results of the town hall’s sound financial situation in their pockets.” Mari Carmen Gonzalez, Councillor for Finance added the tax breaks were being offered “in a responsible way.” As of next year, property tax (IBI) will be reduced from 0.508 per cent of a property’s value to 0.44826 per cent, while capital gains tax (Plusvalia), tax on some vehicles, inheritance tax and administrative fees will be lowered. Capital gains tax will be lowered to 22 per cent, while inheritance tax will soon only apply to houses worth more than €100,000; double the previous
Mijas council has money left over amount of €50,000. Fees for auctions, contracts, administrative forms and competitions will also be waived if they are under €6. Myor Maldonado, explained “we have been limiting expenditure and making savings, restoring the town’s finances and we can pass on our good fortune to the people of Mijas. We do not have any debt and this can be enjoyed by locals, who benefit from the successful way we have run our finances.” Mari Carmen Gonzalez added, "in the last quarter of 2016, we announced the beginning of a review of a significant number of taxes to benefit residents… after the study process, we approved
the motion to lower taxes in 2018.” Non-polluting vehicles, including electric and solar cars, will receive a 75 per cent tax reduction from next year, while vehicles which minimise pollution, including hybrid vehicles, will see a 50 per cent reduction. The proposal was unanimously approved by all parties after the council received around 70 suggestions from the public. Tamara Vera, Councillor for Citizen Participation, explained, at the drafting stage we studied the feasibility of all proposals to see if they could be included in the document, eventually agreeing on legislation in which everyone was represented.”
FUENGIROLA’S Council is beginning works to remodel Juan Breva street Los Boiches with a budget of €141,000. The works are expected to be completed within 23 days and will see the road become pedestrianised. Councillor for Infrastructure, Jose Sanchez, explained, "today we have begun to complete the remodelling of Juan Breva, where the first demolition work has begun.” He added, "it is a street that has a relatively short execution time. He explained before the summer a meeting was held with the neighbours of the road to make them aware of the project and to hear any suggestions or ideas. It was decided the street, which is quite narrow, would become pedestrianised and work should start once the summer is over so as not to cause inconvenience to residents or the many visitors who choose Fuengirola for their holidays. The council put the works out to tender, offering a price of €242,248 with a 45 day execution period. Twenty three offers were received, and Hormacesa was chosen to carry out the works. The project includes the remodelling of infrastructures on the surface and underneath the 200 metre road, specifically between Calles Concepcion Guidet and Rita Luna. No parking spaces are lost as the road did not originally have any and eight LED lampposts will also be fitted.

by Rose Holmes Eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil have been discovered in 40 countries, including 24 of the European Union’s 28 member states. Millions of eggs have been pulled from European supermarket shelves, though some regulators have voiced concern that many contaminated eggs have already entered the food chain, mainly through processed products such as biscuits, cakes and salads. A spokeswoman for the European Commission is reported to have confirmed that the only EU member states so far unaffected are Lithuania, Portugal, Cyprus and Croatia.
She is also reported to have confirmed that the non-EU states in which contaminated eggs have been discovered include the United States, Russia, South Africa and Turkey. Dutch and Belgian authorities traced the source of the insecticide to a supplier of cleaning products in the Netherlands. Two Dutch men who ran the cleaning company Chickfriend were arrested last month. While a large number of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten to affect health, fipronil is considered moderately toxic and can cause organ damage in humans. It is widely used to treat pets for ticks and fleas but its use in the food chain - for example, to clean out barns - is forbidden.
Did the U.S. warn Spain of imminent Barcelona attack? U.S. security agencies warned Spain that Daesh was planning an attack in Barcelona, according to the Spanish press. The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) is reported to have alerted Spanish intelligence officers to the threat weeks and even months before a van ploughed into pedestrians on August 17, killing 14 people and injuring over 100. In addition to the 14 killed by the van, two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife attack in the Catalan coastal resort of Cambrils. "Unsubstantiated information of unknown veracity from late May 2017 indicated that Daesh was planning to conduct unspecified terrorist attacks during the summer against crowded tourist sites in Barcelona, Spain, specifically Las Ramblas boulevard," according to an NCTC briefing note published by the Spanish press. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks without naming those behind the assault. A spokesman for Spain's CNI intelligence agency, refused when contacted by the Spanish press, to "confirm or deny anything on communication with other intelligence services". But a Madrid-based radio station quoted "anti-terror sources" suggesting that the note published was authentic.

Fall in road deaths this summer
Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido confirmed on Tuesday that this year’s high summer season ended with 224 deaths on Spanish roads; a fall of 31 (or 12 per cent) from the same period in 2016. Zoido said this meant that 2017 marked the summer with the lowest number of people dying in road accidents in Spain since 1960, when 150 people were killed, taking into consideration there were fewer people on the
roads at that time. The year 1989 was the worst summer for traffic accident deaths, with 732 people losing their lives. Since then, the mortality rate has fallen relatively steadily, although the summers of 2015 and 2016 witnessed rises of 2.7 percent and 12 per cent in the respective number of deaths. Eighty percent of fatal accidents take place on Spain's secondary roads with
people losing control of their vehicle and driving off the road. Meanwhile, almost 30 per cent of victims were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. This summer saw an extra 3,000 Guardia Civil offers enforcing traffic controls across Spain, with a special campaign to increase awareness about the need to allow at least a metre and a half of space when overtaking cyclists.
Spanish Google swamped with anti-Semitic content Input the word "Jew" into the Spanish version of Google and almost one in three of the results will prove to be antiSemitic. The figures were revealed as part of a report by Observatorio Web, an Argentinian-based watchdog monitoring abuse and hatred online. A third of Google searches with the word "Jewish", or "Judio" as it is in Spanish, led to anti-Semitic content, according to the research for the year 2016. In addition, the study revealed a growing trend for anti-Semitic videos
on YouTube, with more and more people ‘liking’ the hate-filled footage. In January, the clips received three likes for every one dislike but that increased to four to one by the end of the year. Released last Friday, the report highlighted 484 Spanish-language videos that deny the Holocaust and have been viewed almost 1.7 million times in 2016 alone. Meanwhile on Twitter anti-Jewish content is largely related to Israel and the trivialisation of the Holocaust.
Drug gang bust SPANISH police arrested 14 people - including 12 Brits, a Spaniard and a Dominican - in Magaluf for alleged drug dealing. Officers seized 3kg of high-purity cocaine and other drugs, including ecstasy, cannabis and metham-
phetamine, over €100,000 in cash and four vehicles, Spanish police confirmed in a statement, adding they were assisted by the UK’s National Crime Agency. Operation Tantum was launched following another drug raid last
year that ended with the detention of four people. Spanish police said the men arrested were part of an organisation that sold drugs in the island’s many nightspots and clubs. Raids were also carried out in Barcelona.

by Tahnee Wright A Spanish woman who believed Salvador Dali was her father is not the surrealist painters's daughter, DNA tests have proved. 60-year-old Maria Pilar Abel Martinez won a court case back in June which resulted in a judicial order to have the body of Dali exhumed and subjected to DNA tests. But now the Dali Foundation says the tests have conclusively proved the two are not related. "The DNA tests show that Pilar Abel is not Dali's daughter," the foundation, which manages his estate, said in a statement on Wednesday, six weeks after the artist's body was exhumed from under the theatre in his Catalonian home town of Figueres, which was converted into a museum for his work and is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions. Dali died of heart failure in 1989 aged 85
and was previously thought to be childless even largely celibate – however Ms Martinez, a tarot card reader, has been claiming since 2007 that her mother told her at an early age of a short-lived, secret affair with the artist in the mid-1950s. Ms Martinez says her grandmother knew of the affair and would often tell her that she was ‘strange, like your father.’ Had they been related, Ms Martinez would have had a claim on part of Dali's estate – his work was worth hundreds of millions of euros collectively and he bequeathed it all to the Spanish state upon his death. A number of Dali experts had raised their eyebrows at the claim before his body was exhumed, with biographer Ian Gibson noting the artist's own claim of "I'm impotent, you've got to be impotent to be a great painter". It is not known how Ms Martinez has responded to the news.

First day at school Photo Credit: Social Media
Prince George is welcomed by Helen Haslem PRINCE GEORGE, aged four was taken to school for his first day by his father as the Duchess of Cambridge is suffering from severe morning sickness. Like any youngster - even for the third in line for the throne- the first day at school is bound to be a nervous one and this could be seen on his face as he walked hand in hand with Prince William. The pair were greeted by Helen Haslem who is in charge of the youngest children at Thomas’s in Battersea where he will be known as George Cambridge and she took them into the school building where he will spend just half a day getting to know the staff and school mates.
Mosques in Catalonia are to remain outside the independence 'process' and must not be used as polling stations for the unilateral referendum announced by the regional government on October 1, Spanish Islamic Commission President Riay Tatary told the Spanish press. The aim is to "prevent places of worship from being used for political purposes", said the head of the commission representing the country's Muslim communities to the public administration. Mosques were used as polling stations for the symbolic
independence referendum of November 9, 2014, in which 2 million people turned out to vote. Last May, the Islamic commission cancelled a conference titled 'Catalonia, land of immigrants' organised by the Catalan National Assembly and the Islamic community Al Farkum promoting Muslim collaboration in the "foundation of a new State". "We will all be founders of a new State in which we will enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities," read the programme in Arabic. "Politics must stay away from the mosques," Tatary said.
Brit expat annoys neighbours with ‘Little Britain’ shrine AN English tree surgeon has reacted to Brexit by transforming his German home into a quirky homage to Britain, complete with red telephone boxes and a life-size model of Queen Elizabeth. 53-year-old Gary Blackburn moved to Germany 32 years ago and entertains a number of curious visitors at his ‘Little Britain’ exhibition in Kretzhaus, 30km south of Bonn. Blackburn began assembling the exhibition following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union in June last year and even features a lime green mini car from the ‘Mr Bean’ television series. However, not everyone is happy with Blackburn’s collection, with some of his neighbours complaining to their local government about the latest exhibit parked on his lawn - a demilitarised Centurion tank he bought from the Swiss army. “For me the tank is a sign of peace. I have decorated it with a lot of poppies and white doves. The poppies stand for freedom and peace in England and commemorate fallen and injured soldiers during the past two world wars,” he told Reuters. “Two neighbours want it removed, but the Interior Ministry recognise that the tank is demilitarised, stands on private property and is not visible from the streets.”

Anita Humphreys a Lion who embraces the circle of life Photo credit: RTN
by Michael Cano IN LAST week’s edition (18) of RTN, new La Cala de Mijas Lions president Julie Barry explained her role and this week we speak to her colleague and Lions PR specialist Anita Humphreys. After spending many years working for international publishers such as Reed International and having a holiday home on the Costa del Sol, Anita had to recover from a major back operation. She and her husband spent more and more time in Spain, where the weather was so much better for her so they decided to move over permanently 27 years ago, living in the Costa del Sol but keeping a yacht in Barbate in Cadiz Province. They enjoyed the fact that Barbate was within relatively easy driving distance but was in many ways quite different to the area in which they had settled. Anita set up a management consultancy and as she was fluent in Spanish settled into the life in Spain very easily retiring some 10 years ago and now living near El Faro between La Cala and Fuengirola. Having enjoyed a very busy life, which had included working with the Colchester Military Tattoo back in the UK, she needed to keep both her mind and body active, so she offered her services as a volunteer at the Lions shop in La Cala. Sadly, her husband passed away but she was determined to keep involved with the charity and was admitted to the group of 36 Lions two and a half years ago. Now she is heavily involved in promoting the charity, issuing press releases and obtaining as much coverage as possible with the aim of helping to increase the number of volunteers as well as obtain both funds and donations of items for the shop which raises so much for the charity. Although she and her husband had no children of their own, she has 12 nieces and
Anita on the left with Lions President Julie Barry nephews so regularly hosts members of the family who often visit and she and her sister who are very close literally swop properties whenever the mood takes them. When asked what she likes most about Spain, Anita is very quick to praise the country, saying “I like the laid back attitude. “The Spanish live in the moment and are
very spontaneous. Things do get done but it may take some time to see results.” She had to think longer about things she doesn’t like but managed to highlight “the way people drive” adding diplomatically “there is plenty of bureaucracy.” The thing that is most impressive about La Cala de Mijas Lions is the fact that with a
relatively small number of highly dedicated members and volunteers, they are able to do so much to help local causes, raising between €50,000 and €80,000 each year. Customers and volunteers are always welcome at the La Cala Lions charity shop at Calle Torremolinos and if you wish to help or donate any items please call 677 05 90 61.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE is not the only one with baby news this week after Fuengirola’s Bioparc has proudly announced the birth of a golden-cheeked gibbon, the first of its kind in Spain. The animal, which is native to Vietnam, is so-called as their young are born with a blonde coat as camouflage to blend in with their mother’s fur. When the animals reach sexual maturity at around three-years-old, the coat of males turns black while females briefly grow dark fur before returning to blonde. The baby- whose sex is as yet undetermined- is expected to spend the first six months of its life clinging to its mother high up in the park’s trees and accompanied by Den, its father. According to the park, the animal is healthy and the mother and baby are said to be bonding with the infant already clinging to its mother’s fur. Bioparc, which has a sister zoo in Valencia, sees different species of animals living together, as they would in their natural habitat. The attraction is divided into four sections, Africa, Madagascar Island, Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific, with panthers, meercats, Komodo dragons and Galapagos tortoises all on display.

It’s a long road to freedom ARJAN ERKER one of the founders of the Free a Girl charity has been in the Costa del Sol to explain the concept behind the Dutch charity and to announce a fund raiser. Working through the Marbella Dutch Business Group he is planning to run the charities first ever gala evening at the picturesque Hotel Castillo de Monda on November 1. In an interview with RTN, Arjan revealed the fascinating story of his kidnapping and imprisonment in the Russian satellite state of Dagestan by so called Muslim ‘freedom fighters’. He had been working in the area with the charity Médecins Sans Frontières when the vehicle in which he was travelling was stopped and he was held for ransom for 20 months. Although initially beaten up, he managed to win his captors over and although he was kept underground for most of the time with a candle for light, he managed somehow to keep his head until a €1 million ransom saw him released. This shocking event left him determined to do some-
thing to help others and with a group of friends including Ibiza born actress and TV presenter Yolanthe who is married to footballer Wesley Sneijder, they set up Free a Girl in Holland. So far, they have raised sufficient funds to manage to free more than 4,000 girls from around the world who have been sold into prostitution and with the growing and affluent Dutch community on the Costa del Sol, he wants to launch the charities first fundraiser in Spain. The idea is to hold night of good food and fine music with a planned 12 dishes to be offered by waiters as a finger buffet with music by supporter George McCrae (who spends much of his time in Holland) of Rock Your Baby fame as well as other acts and a DJ. For those interested in attending the event, please send an email to register without commitment to board member@ marbe l ladutchbusinessclub.nl. Before returning to Holland, Arjan agreed to answer a number of questions which give some insight into this very brave man who is dedicated to educating the world about slavery and freeing others.

The way I see it… by
Harvey Mann
How was your August? For the remainders hot and sticky I guess? The summer inferno is too much for me so as always, I escaped back to London, and you can almost guarantee cool weather, with more than a splattering of rain, after all it is August with the children on holiday, with many parents or grandparents trying to keep them warm and dry at an English seaside resort, then just as you thought it was over, Bank Holiday weekend turned out to be one of the hottest on records, weather madness. My August was terrible, I ended up a nervous wreck, it was like standing in a bath having a shower at the Bates Motel aka the Hitchcock film Pshyco, as I spent nearly the whole month, either on the telephone or emailing companies that had been able to mess everything up with a regularity that must be unprecedented in my life. First unfortunately for me a foreign lorry from Romania turned into the near side of my car damaging the nearside rear door and back nearside wing of my car, the lorry had been parked on double yellow lines in front of temporary lights at some roadworks. All the cars in front of me signalled and overtook the stationary lorry, when the lights turned green in our favour, I did the same and as I got level with the front of the lorry he decided to pull away without any signal from the kerb, hitting my car. I jumped out and took a couple of pictures quickly, and then realised that the lorry was a left-hand drive, I walked round to his open window, and told him what he had done, and that I wanted to exchange insurance details with him, he replied in broken English that he could not park there any longer as he was blocking the traffic. We agreed to meet after the traffic lights, stop and then exchange details, the lorry was as wide as the road, so I told him to move up into a bus lane so
we could continue with the paperwork. I moved up to the bus lane and waited for him to arrive, he drove past with his window still open and shouted, “I’m not stopping”. Luckily, I had a picture of his front, showing his registration number as he drove off I managed to take the number of the rear plate, and low and behold it was different to the front plate. As my car was not seriously damaged, I drove home just half a mile away and called the police, I then had to go to their website and fill in all the details, attached the photographs that I had taken, then the next thing I did was call my insurance company. After 10 minutes or so I got through only after pressing a series of numbers, if you want so and so press one, then press three and then press two after another ten minutes I finally got a human being, whose English was only slightly better than the Romanian lorry driver, after nearly one hour with my nerves about to explode, the insurance agent asked me to email them all the details and the pictures to their website. I then received several calls and emails asking me to repeat all the details that I had provided before. The next day was hour on hour speaking to the gas board, once again waiting a long time to get through, pressing yet again, one, then two, then four on my keypad of my telephone, I finally was able to speak to a human being, my reason to speak to them was that we have decided on having a new gas boiler. After ages and ages, I finally got an appointment to have a representative come to my home to do a survey and give me a quote. The next day I received a call from the gas board to tell me when the gas man cometh, I told them that I have already got an appointment, the next thing I got was an email of the confirmation of appointment which was a different day and time that I had agreed on. The gas man did cometh on the
first day and time that had been agreed on in the first place, luckily, I was in and he explained the mix up by revolving his index finger by his temple, that signifies madness. Then I got an email from Vodafone telling me that my broadband and home telephone has been cancelled because they were unable to take a payment from my direct debit at the bank. So, I telephoned them, the usual happened, press one, press two, press five, finally after waiting almost half an hour I spoke to yet another human being. “What’s your account number?” I gave it to them, after twenty minutes or so the person told me that there was no such account, about to burst into tears I explained that I had signed a contract and gave them my bank details so they could set up a direct debit. “No sir we do not have anything on the details you have given”. But, but I spluttered with my fist clenched in anger I had given everything that was needed and I’ve been using my broadband and home phone for more than two months. “OK” the voice said, “we can set up all the details now while we speak”, this I did, but for the next few days I got more emails from Vodafone confirming first that my contract had been cancelled. Then I called them back and they apologised for the mistakes assuring me that the new contract was now in operation. So that was my August, I had nightmares all month long of the Bates Motel with a dark s h a d o w through t h e
shower curtains wielding a knife and me screaming like Janet Leigh being stabbed repeatedly. With my nerves shot to pieces, I’m packing my bag to return to a large brandy and a coffee and to sanity I hope. P.S The foreign lorry has not been traced by either the police or my Insurance company at this moment of writing. My new gas boiler will be installed within the next few days. And my home broadband and phone are working, but Vodafone have not taken any payment so far.

All our fake news yesterdays by
Michael Walsh
keyboardcosmetics@ gmail.com
During the late 1980s millions caught up on world events by switching on BBC or ITV News. The term news is a misnomer as newsfeed was then dominated by events in apartheid South Africa. BBC anchor-man, Michael Buerk, covered so many stories in the region I assumed he had residential status. There was never doubt that mainstream TV was singing to the same
hymn sheet as was the Sovietbacked African National Council (ANC). I recall one shocking incident in which an African teenager, suspected of being an informer by a witch-finding mob, suffered a petrol-filled tyre being placed over his head before being publicly incinerated. I felt then and now that the pitiless vigilantes were heartened by the presence of the BBC´s TV crew which filmed the unfolding horror. During the 1960s I stayed in Cape Town and Durban. Once, lost and late at night, I wandered the shanty towns but I never felt threatened. There was an anti-British bias but this came not from Africans but from young White descendants of Dutch settlers. The term apartheid has negative connotations but it is simply the Boer word for ´separateness´. Today, separate development is commonplace the world over. There is never media interest in the Indian caste system or apartheid practiced elsewhere. Ironically,
much separateness is wisely self-imposed. The West´s current experiment in social engineering forces quite dissimilar ethnic groups together with chaos the consequence. Television crews were often banished from South Africa for setting up fake news stories. A common trick used by television teams was to toss loose coins into public trash bins. African kids, typical of all children, would scramble into the bins to recover the coins. This activity was filmed and the footage later captioned or narrated: ‘In Apartheid South Africa the Whites live well whilst African children feed from rubbish bins.’ Pictures of armoured vehicles were superimposed on the backdrops to peaceful public parks. A South African correspondent
writes, “My late brother, who lived in England, said BBC and ITV claim black children are held in concentration camps. But, the pictures shown were of the children from Khayalitsha. The kids were standing at the town´s airport fence watching airliners coming and going. Today, in African ruled South Africa, there are an estimated 450 white squatter camps scattered across the world´s most lawless nation. These luckless ethnicEuropean communities make up about
25% of South Africa´s white population. Are we surprised that there isn´t a British hack to be found at any of these squatter camps.

Golden age movers by

If you ask members of the Baby Boomer generation, what in their opinion was the greatest dance from their younger years, you would undoubtedly receive an assortment of answers, such was the number of dance crazes that came out of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Right up there I imagine would be the jive, one dance style that still retains its popularity. But there was a lot of competition back then, with weird stuff like: The Mashed Potato; Locomotion; Stroll, and Hitch Hike, to name just a few. But I recently watched a video on Facebook, posted by one of my ex-
Bermuda cronies of a party in the 1970’s, and I was reminded of something that helped make those times so memorable - the greatest dance ever devised by man - not the Watusi or Hully Gully, but the Bump! Now whoever invented this dance, it’s pretty obvious to me that it must have been someone with a sadistic bent, a retired tax inspector perhaps, and which you might think contradicts my opinion of it being the greatest. But there is something deeply satisfying about being able to knock eight bells out of each other on the dance floor without seriously falling out.
And in spite of being one who is to dancing what Kim Jong Un is to standup comedy, I wasn’t half bad at it. And I have the scars to prove it. Freud would have made something out of that. Like a lot of men of my generation, it takes a few gallons of wine to loosen up my head sufficiently to take to the dance floor. And see, that’s what I like about alcohol, it’s a rejuvenating potion, because no sooner am I up there, than I am at it like a mantis at speed. Any doubts about my dancing ability are washed away in a tide of Rioja,
and I suddenly know without a doubt, that I am pretty damn cool. Trouble is whilst ‘getting on down’ is ok, ‘getting on up’ presents a problem, nevertheless judging by the gyrating and the chucking out of legs at odd angles going on around me, the Twist seems still to be the most popular dance with other Golden Agers. But these days there is a worrying sound above the music, reminiscent of a gate with rusty hinges. It’s the sound of hip and knee replacements under stress. Dancing has become a dangerous game.

PART II
The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa del Sol was sitting on a terrace in Lagos with nothing but the flat morning ocean and a beer for company when his phone buzzed. “Heh-low. Who´s this?” “Heard anything strange this morning?” Costa recognised the voice of his friend Dan Sanchéz of the National Police. They´d walked the same path together once - both were half-Spanish, half-English - but the road had forked and each had gone their own way. “Not a birdy. What´s happened?” “A Cessna carrying Frank Levy the Hollywood producer back from Cannes was over Malaga.” Dan listed a few of Levy´s films, well-known low-brow hits. “A crew member robbed him mid-air and jumped from the plane. Diamond ring.” “Happy landing?” Costa could hear the hooting Malaga traffic behind Dan. “As far as we know.” “Where was this?” “Near Comares. In the mountains behind Velez.” Costa watched a dolphin break the slate-grey surface. “So?” came his friend´s voice. “Sure. I´ll give it a go.” “Get me on this number. Levy´s offering a reward too, so that´s a double incentive this time.” Costa stood and stretched, dropping a coin onto the table for the beer. He saw an old Scot with a tatty, grey beard standing near his boat. Costa knew that years back the man had been at this beach with his wife, now long dead, and had lost his wedding ring while swimming. He came every morning, walking the disappearing waves, looking in vain for the ring. Costa pushed his boat out and gunned the engine. Waving at the old man - they hardly ever spoke - he skimmed off across the glassy surface planning how he was going to spend his reward.

Bank announces no change for notes Photo credit: Public Domain Pictures
Increase in property prices and sales predicted
DILEMMA: Bank of England to keep polymer notes despite public opposition THE BANK of England has announced that after careful and serious consideration and extensive public consultation there will be no change to the composition of polymer used for future banknotes. The new polymer £20 note and future print runs of £5 and £10 notes will continue to be made from polymer manufactured using trace amounts of chemicals, typically less than 0.05%, ultimately derived from animal products. This decision reflects multiple considerations including the concerns raised by the public, the availability of environmentally sustainable alternatives, and value for money, as well as the
widespread use of animal-derived additives in everyday products, including alternative payment methods. In reaching its decision, the Bank has also taken account of its obligations under the Equality Act 2010. The only currently viable alternative for polymer banknotes is to use chemicals ultimately derived from palm oil. In order to seek the public’s views on both these options, the Bank ran a full public consultation which set out a range of relevant information. The Bank has also conducted outreach meetings with representatives of potentially impacted groups, commissioned technical trials, held commercial discussions and commissioned independent environmental research.
3,554 people responded to the consultation. Of those who expressed a preference, 88 per cent were against the use of animal-derived additives and 48 per cent were against the use of palm oil-derived additives. The Bank has had to balance these responses against its other public duties and priorities as well as the other evidence gathered over the past months. The use of palm oil raises questions about environmental sustainability and the Bank’s suppliers have been unable to commit to sourcing the highest level of sustainable palm oil at this time. The Bank fully recognises the concerns raised by members of the public, both prior to and during the consultation, and has not taken this decision lightly.
SPAIN’S residential property market is set to see a steady rise in house prices in the foreseeable future, according to Solvia, the property division of Sabadell. Solvia predicts the average Spanish house price will rise by 7.3 per cent between now and 2020, although there is likely to be wide regional variations. Meanwhile, Bankinter predicts that house prices will have risen 4 per cent by the end of 2017 and are set to increase by between 4 per cent and 5 per cent next year. Regions with the strongest demand and economies such as Catalonia and Madrid are likely to see the biggest rises, with the Solvia forecast suggesting increases of 11 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. Solvia also expects sales to increase, predicting growth of between 7 per cent and 8 per cent each year until 2020 while Bankinter suggests transactions could rise even more quickly. Sales are likely to be strongest in Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga and Seville where demand is high.
Negative vibes on UK inflation increases UK INFLATION has been steadily on the increase over the last year, and many people will undoubtedly be starting to see the impact on their wallets, particularly when sluggish wage growth is taken into account. It comes as no surprise then that consumers are becoming more and more concerned, with research from Lloyds Bank revealing that inflation concerns have
hit their highest level since January 2014. The research found that 65 per cent of UK adults surveyed felt negative about current levels of inflation in July, up from 60 per cent in June's survey and just 41 per cent in July 2016. Confidence in the country's financial situation has also deteriorated, with those feeling negative up 2 per cent month-on-month in
July and 7 per cent over the last 12 months, with the figure now standing at 69 per cent. At the moment, this isn't yet filtering through into people's personal finances, with 64 per cent of those taking part in the survey feeling positive about their own financial situation in July, unchanged from June, and just 3 per cent below the reading in July 2016. A further 79 per
cent reported feeling positive about their job security, only 1 per cent down on a monthly basis and an increase of 2 per cent year-on-year. Robin Bulloch, managing director of Lloyds Bank, comments: "Despite a slight slowdown in the rate of essential spending growth over the summer, concerns around inflation have continued to
build, which has an impact on future intentions. With the rate of savings already at a record low, significantly fewer people now expect to be putting more money aside in six months' time. While the pressure on disposable income makes this understandable, it does mean consumers are less able to absorb any further squeeze on their finances."

Five natural ways to make your home smell amazing There's something about a clean, fresh-smelling home that feels a little like heaven, but most of us also don't want to go to town on harsh chemicals to keep it that way. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make your home smell amazing naturally and many of them include things you likely already have around the house. Not only does a good-smelling house feel cleaner, but the right aromas can also affect our moods and sense of calm. A 2009 study published on PubMed.org found that teens who received
aromatherapy were significantly less stressed than those who received a placebo, indicating that it could be a very effective treatment for stress management. Essential oils on pine cones Use essential oils and pine cones to create a pretty, great-smelling decoration. Just add a few drops of essential oils, like lavender or cinnamon to pine cones and arrange them in a basket. You only need one to two drops of oil per pine cone and you can easily move the basket
from room-to-room if desired. Oranges and cinnamon in water Simmer water in a pot on your stove and then add orange slices and a few tablespoons of cinnamon or cinnamon sticks. Turn off the heat and just let the pot sit on your stove; a delicious scent will emanate throughout your kitchen and into other rooms in your house. Essential oil room spray Replace harsh chemical air fresheners with an essential
oil spritz. All you need to do is add three or four drops of your favourite essential oil to about a cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake before use and you're ready to go. You can spray it in the air, on fabric items such as pillows, a comforter, or even your sofa. Cotton buds and oil It's time for more essential oils! In this super simple trick, just dab each end of a cotton bud into your favourite oil and hide it in the toilet paper roll in your bathroom. You'll have a nice-scented, super space-
Shell-covered pots
Shell-covered pots are great if you’re struggling to let go of the summer, bringing the beach into (or directly outside of) your home even if you live inland. They add a gorgeously breezy oceanic touch to your plants. Tools and materials: Selection of shells Kitchen paper Terracotta flower pot Tile cement Old kitchen knife Seed beads
1. If the shells need cleaning, scrub them thoroughly and drain on kitchen paper. Clean the pot, then spread tile cement thickly over a section of the side.
2. Arrange the shells in the cement, according to your own design, embedding them deeply.
3. If the cement is too obtrusive for your taste, sprinkle on shimmery seed beads or ground up shells while the surface is still sticky. Shake off any excess.
4. It is easier to apply the shells to the pot in sections. You can let the pot rest completely on its side as the completed section dries before starting on the next.
efficient air freshener. Don't be afraid to use more than one cotton bud if a stronger scent is desired. Baking soda jars Baking soda jars work anywhere in your home, as well as in your car. Just poke holes in a small mason jar lid and add 1/2 cup baking soda and four to six drops of essential oil to the jar. Cap it and place wherever you want your house to smell fresh. You can also use cloth and a rubber band if you don't have a jar cap refresh every few weeks with four to six drops of new oil.

home and garden
In the autumn garden 1. Start removing dead plant remains from borders and vegetable beds, and clear weeds for composting. 2. Rake up leaves and stack up for leaf-mould. 3. Put nets on ponds to prevent any fallen leaves from fouling the water. 4. Give hedges a final trim. 5. Finish harvesting fruit, and check supplies in store. 6. Gather vegetables and store any excess. 7. Start planting new roses, hardy climbers, shrubs, trees and perennials while the ground is still warm. 8. Finish cleaning the greenhouse. Wash and dry pots and trays, and store neatly. 9. Move outdoor containers under cover before hard weather, or
insulate them where they stand. 10. Drain and roll up hosepipes and clean out water butts, and drain and insulate taps if you’re in an area that suffers from frost in the winter. 11. Gather fallen fruits and put them out for the birds in a corner, well away from plants. 12. Pick rotten or mummified fruits and remove or burn.

As summer days in a garden draw to a close, use this checklist to make sure you do not overlook any important jobs that need doing in late September and October:
If you're thinking of having a bonfire, firstly ask yourself if you really need one. You can compost most soft plant remains, stack leaves to make leaf mould, and often shred woody material. If you do have a bonfire: 1. Keep it small or use an incinerator to confine it. 2. Have a hosepipe or buckets of water handy in case you need to douse the flames. 3. Use a fork to add material to the fire. 4. Keep children at a safe distance and shut any pets indoors.

Photo credit: digitalspy by Jemima Roberts DANIELLA WESTBROOK, the former EastEnders actress, has confirmed she is pregnant with her first child with toyboy fiancé, Alan Thomason, 34. The forty-three-year-old actress, who lives in Benidorm with her husband-to-be, claimed her bump is so big it could even be twins. The couple announced their engagement in August after only a few weeks of dating. The troubledstar, who has publicly battled a cocaine addiction, has spoken about her fiancé saying he had good values

and could stand up to her. Elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, former Geordie Shore star, Vicky Pattison, 29, has made the most of her Marbella trip to show off her tan, lounging by a pool in a pink one-piece. The reality TV star is holidaying on the Costa del Sol with her fiancé, John Noble, who she was last week spotted kissing in a resort in the glamorous town. The brunette beauty, who got engaged in June, took time out on holiday with her tailor fiancé, looking stunning in a grey zip-up one-piece swimming costume.
The couple first got together around ten years ago but broke off their relationship before rekindling it earlier this year with John surprising his fiancée by getting down on one knee after only six months of dating. The stunner said the proposal “knocked her for six” as she thought the relationship might end because of their busy schedules. Following her engagement, Vicky told a publication, ‘I’m so happy personally and professionally – there’s a level of equilibrium in my life that I’ve never experienced before. He is so lovely, I’m very fortunate.”

A Spanish man who claims to have the results of a DNA test showing he is Julio Iglesias's son filed a paternity suit on Monday against the Grammy award-winning singer. Javier Sanchez Santos, 41, presented the lawsuit at a court in Valencia where he lives. Santos' mother, Portuguese ballerina Maria Edite, presented a paternity suit against Iglesias in 1992 but it was eventually dismissed due to procedural reasons. She says she had a brief affair with the Spanish
singing legend in 1975, who at the time was married to socialite Isabel Preysler. Now Santos wants to reopen the case based on a DNA test carried out on tissues and cigarette butts touched by Iglesias. The items were reportedly collected by a private detective in Miami, where Iglesias now lives. The DNA test allegedly shows there is a 99 per cent probability of paternity. If the Valencian court rejects the lawsuit Santos said he plans to appeal to higher courts in Spain and even up to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Iglesias, 73, is one of the biggest stars of Latin music, having sold over 300 million albums. He has three children with Preysler -- including pop star Enrique -- and five children with his current partner Miranda Rijnsburger.
99 PER CENT CERTAIN: Santos will appeal to higher courts if the Valencia court rejects the lawsuit
JUST when the world thought there couldn’t possibly be any more versions of the massively popular Spanish hit Despacito, we have been proved wrong. Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s collaborative song has been spun into some fresh, noteworthy remixes and covers over the past couple of months. But aversion by Japanese man known on Twitter as @zk_ojis now vying for the top spot as he turns one of the least likeliest items into a musical instrument: a calculator. Using two Dragon Night AR7778 calculators, he generates monophonic sounds to the tune of Despacito. A tweet sharing a video of this ‘calculator version’ has wowed thousands on social media with over 30,000 likes. While some thought it to “be better than the official version”, there were others who weren’t impressed, saying it sounds like an “ice cream truck from hell”. Dance track ‘Despacito’ - which translates as ‘slowly’ - has reached number one in 45 different countries, including the UK, since its release in January and was the first Spanish-language song to do so since ‘Macarena’ in 1996.
Mathieu blasts Spanish press Former Valencia and Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has blasted the Spanish press due to the ‘pressure and demands’ they bring. Having joined Sporting CP in Portugal this summer, the Frenchman believed the pressure did not help his smoking habit and hit out at the Spanish press for reporting on it. “It is not the same pressure that I endured in Spain over the years I played there,” Mathieu told a Spanish sports magazine. “There are demands here of course but not the same as there were at Barcelona. “The pressure and demand is brought about by the Spanish press - they put a lot of pressure on you when you have a bad performance “They hunt you down every day and put you down; it is not easy at times like those. “I was criticised for being a smoker, but I’m neither the first nor the last player to smoke. “All that is important for me is how people feel when they see me player, nothing else matters.”
Tough times COLLEEN ROONEY’S trip to Spain was dramatically cut short after reports emerged of her husband Wayne Rooney’s boozy night out with office worker, Laura Simpson, which resulted in a drink driving arrest for the footballer. The 31-year-old Everton player is said to have “kissed and cuddled” the 29-year-old mother of one on a night at a pub in Cheshire before drunkenly driving her car home. The scandal-hit father was reportedly pulled over by police at around 2am for having a missing brake light before being breathalysed and arrested. Rooney’s 31-year-old wife, who is pregnant with the couple’s fourth child, was enjoying time away in Mallorca with her three sons when the news broke. The fashion designer reportedly cut her holiday short, taking a private jet home to confront her husband. Now back in the UK, Colleen is said to have left her €6 million marital home in Prestbury, Cheshire, and moved into her parents’ house in Liverpool. According to media reports, Wayne now faces losing half of his €80 million fortune if Colleen now files for divorce.

Attendees enjoy the photography
MARBELLA will be playing host to a new exhibition, Genesis, by Brazilian photographer, Sebastião Salgado, until October 1. The terraces of the Puerto Deportivo will see the event attract photography fans from all over after the work was inaugurated by La Caixa bank as part of their Social Work programme. The exhibition was opened by councillors Manuel Osorio and Manuel Cardeña, as well as Gema Midón, the director of the CaixaBank office in Marbella, Jose Rueda, and the
representative of the artist's work in Spain, Miguel Gonzalez. Osorio explained, "Marbella is a benchmark and a magnificent showcase for a high quality exhibition in which Salgado reflects the greatness of our planet." The councillor thanked La Caixa for "its commitment to culture, training and helping the most disadvantaged." Jose Rueda, for his part, has thanked the council for an initiative, part of the program Art in the street, whose objective is "to turn the cities into openair museums and bring the creations of contemporary
artists to the public ". Salgado’s representative in Spain highlighted the support of both institutions and explained the exhibition is composed of 38 black and white photographs "which are the testimony of a long coexistence of humans with nature and a visual ode to a world that we must protect. " Genesis is structured in five sections, each representing an extensive region with several human ecosystems and groups; The southern confines, with images of South Georgia, the Malvinas, and Valdes peninsula and Sanctuaries, captured in the
Galapagos Islands, Indonesia and the ecosystems of Madagascar, as well as Africa, developed in the Okavango Delta in Botswana and Virunga Park. The exhibition also covers Northern lands with landscapes of Alaska and the Colorado plateau, the Canadian island of Baffin and the northern regions of Russia and northern Siberia and The Amazon and the Pantanal, centered in Manaus, national parks of Canaima (Venezuela) and Xingu (Brazil) and the Pantanal, the largest wetland in the world, between Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.

what’s on
Late night shopping MORE THAN one hundred shops are taking part in the I Shopping Night in La Carihuela tomorrow. The initiative will offer family-friendly activities throughout the day, including concerts, food and children’s performances, before extending shopping hours from 8pm to 2am. President of the Circle of Entrepreneurs of Torremolinos (CET), Adolfo Trigueros, explained "we want to show off the dynamism and activities offered by the city and the trade in Torremolinos from another perspective," adding he hoped the scheme would boost trade. He said he hoped attendees would enjoy a "great special night for commerce in the town and in the beachside area of La Carihuela,” adding, " the Circle of Entrepreneurs of Torremolinos work to develop projects to benefit Torremolinos and we will carry them out in each of the commercial areas of the town.” The Councillor for Commercial Activities, Maribel Tocon, said there was a "need to join forces between the council and the various associations to revive commercial activity, something which was achieved during the campaign 'Feel Torremolinos,’ whose main initiative is to strengthen the business fabric of the municipality." Meanwhile in Malaga last Sunday shops the year-round trend in Spain to close on the last day of the week, with several stores opening their doors just for the day, including Leroy Merlin, Ikea, Corte Ingles and Carrefour.
Similarly, in August Fuengirola held its Noche Viva festival, which attracted thousands of people to Fuengirola, becoming one of the biggest events of the summer, and filling the streets with revellers. The event saw a total of 287 businesses- 80 more than last year- open their doors across the town from 8pm to 3am, offering discounts and promotions. All businesses signed up to the scheme offered a minimum 10 per cent discount on top of any normal promotions,
while hotels offered special dishes and promotions. More than 30 points around the town were filled with activities, with more than 300 taking place on the strip between Santa Amalia to Los Boliches, passing through the Boquetillo. Among the novelties this year, 77 stalls from the Sunday market were positioned in thirteen different areas around the town and a 22-float parade took place in Plaza de la Constitucion, as well as a dog show and face painting.
Piano man wanted
THE FUENGIROLA-BASED T.I.M.S. choir are urgently looking for new members and a pianist to join their group. The singers are particularly keen to recruit new male members, as well as a classically-trained pianist for what is set to be a busy autumn/ winter programme of events. The group have enough members to cover all currently booked events but need more members to fulfil requests which are coming in, giving singing enthusiasts a chance to join the “superb” choir at concerts and rehearsals across the Costa del Sol. The group’s president, Gilly, explained, “the dedicated amateur (but experienced) group of singers based in Fuengirola, love to sing everything from Bach to Beatles, old and new, believing in hard work and fun and friendship. They love to entertain and already have bookings for autumn and Christmas 2017.” For further information, or to join, please call Gilly on 654 891 790 or email timschoir@gmail.com.

learn spanish
Adjectival agreement
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
Last week we talked about the gender of nouns and how the articles (“a” and “the”) and adjectives (describing words) change their endings to match the gender of the nouns. Now we’ve got those basic principles established we can start looking a bit more closely at adjectives and how they change. This is really very simple. Last lesson we looked at the word for “small”, that is pequeño and we saw how it changes in four ways – pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas, equivalent to masculine and feminine singular, masculine and feminine plural. The root form which you will find in a dictionary is the masculine singular pequeño. All adjectives that end in “o” in their masculine singular form change in exactly the same way. There are thousand of them. Here are a few that we can use to describe people: alto “tall”, bajo “short”, gordo “fat”, delgado “thin”, tímido “shy”, simpático “nice”, guapo “handsome”, feo “ugly”, viejo “old”. In each case they will have the four changes I have
mentioned, so for example: El hombre guapo - the handsome man Los hombres guapos - the handsome men La mujer guapa – the pretty woman Las mujeres guapas – the pretty women. Notice that in the case of the word guapo we have a different translation in English for male and female: male - handsome (or as my daughters would say - cute), and female - pretty. For most of the other words however the translations would be the same – “nice man” “nice woman” etc. Exactly the same principle works for adjectives that describe things (remember, things are the same as people in Spanish, with either masculine or feminine gender). So, for example, we could have the word “long” which is largo used to describe an object. Un palo largo - a long stick Una cortina larga
– a long curtain Now as I have said, in each of these cases, the basic adjective ends in the letter “o”. However, adjectives can end in almost any letter – so what do we do with all the others? (I hear you ask). Well, let’s look at a few random examples: azul - blue grande – big joven – young feliz – happy Adjectives such as those above that do not end in “o” can only change from singular to plural: they cannot make any change to differentiate them between masculine and feminine. Therefore we have: El libro azul - the blue book La mesa azul – the blue table El zapato grande – the big shoe La camisa grande – the big shirt El hombre joven – the young man
La mujer joven – the young woman El niño feliz - the happy boy La niña feliz – the happy girl However, in the plural, these adjectives add “s” or “es” in exactly the same way as nouns do. Here are the same phrases again in the plural. Los libros azules - the blue books Las mesas azules – the blue tables Los zapatos grandes – the big shoes Las camisas grandes – the big shirts Los hombres jóvenes – the young men Las mujeres jóvenes – the young women Los niños felices - the happy boys Las niñas felices – the happy girls We can notice two different things here. Firstly look at the adjectives in both sets of phrases and you will see that in each case there are only
Live the moment With wry wit and boundless heart, Eva Woods delivers an unforgettable tale of celebrating triumphs great and small, seizing the day, and always remembering to live in the moment. “It’s simple, really. You’re just meant to do one thing every day that makes you happy. Could be little things; could be big. In fact, we’re doing one right now…” Annie Hebden is stuck in her boring job, with her irritating roommate, in a life no 35-year-old would want. But deep down, Annie is still mourning the terrible loss that tore a hole through the perfect existence she’d once taken for granted, and hiding away is safer than remembering what used to be;
until she meets the eccentric Polly Leonard. Bright, bubbly, intrusive Polly is everything Annie doesn’t want in a friend. But Polly is determined to finally wake Annie up to life. Because if recent events have taught Polly anything, it’s that your time is too short to waste a single day, which is why she wants Annie to join her on a mission… One hundred days; one hundred new ways to be happy... Annie’s convinced it’s impossible, but so is saying no to Polly. And on an unforgettable journey that will force her to open herself to new experiences - and perhaps even new love with the unlikeliest of men - Annie will slowly begin to realize that maybe, just maybe, there’s still joy to be found in the world.
two possible forms - singular and plural. Secondly, if you compare the two languages in all of these examples, you will see that every single word changes in Spanish (article, noun, adjective), whereas in English we only change one word - the noun – which changes into a plural word. In real life, when we are speaking Spanish in real situations, it is very difficult to get these right, but in the words of Corporal Jones, “Whatever you do – don’t panic!” The Spanish are used to foreigners getting these endings mixed up. For our Anglo-Saxon brains it’s just too much to remember changing all those fiddly endings all the time. Our learning goes in stages, understanding first before we can speak correctly, so your only task at this stage is simply to pay attention to these differences – understand what is going on and notice it as you listen to the Spanish around you, on the radio and television, on “Youtube”, or anywhere else you get the chance to hear it.

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 5 represents P and 19 represents K, so fill in P every time the figure 5 appears and K every time the figure 19 appears. Kenny’s Mystical Postbag Kenny, my family think I am crazy but I am starting to feel that there is a ghost in my house. I find myself looking over my shoulder, and shivering even on a recently hot night. My senses seem to be picking up on something, but what? I get no support from my family either. Kay P. Hi Kay. Energies are attracted to houses, especially if there are spiritual believers living there. Most houses have had a story before you lived in them, and spirits can lie dormant for years. Negative energies like poltergeists are attracted to adolescences and like to cause trouble whenever they can; whereas positive energy can be very attracted to someone who is opening to their spirituality, as I feel that you are. I would have to come to see the house before giving you a full report. No ghost belongs on this Earth and they should be moved on, which I can also help you with. Meanwhile do not worry, there seems as if there is nothing bad to deal with in your home, but I am here to support you if you need me to!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Waiting for the right time mean that important priorities may never happen. Be more in the flow of things as this astrological year brings you a strong focus on domestic issues and the solving of problems previously running way out of control!
Strong psychic energies are abounding as the Sun trines with Pluto at the weekend. Your intuition and a heightened awareness is preparing you for something, and may be testing your faith in the interim. Look within to see that you are being guided for some reason, and be unafraid to step up to whatever it is that now inevitably comes along.
Saturn is a wise and sage teacher; and in this role is very preoccupied with lessons that the past brings and the karma this may indirectly bring up to you. It rules with an iron rod the Tenth and Eleventh houses bringing you discipline now to get a job done, and both the authority and temerity to be able to fully promote it anyway you see fit.
The Sun squares on Saturn, bringing timbre to plans you are currently making. Your patience and coordination are key leadership skills, and what is needed now is a coming together to ensure that recent events are never eve repeated; and respect is restored to all involved. However, the leopard never ever changes his spots!
Venus trines with a brooding Saturn and a conciliating Kora. The time is right to make amends anyway that you can, but you still have to stand your ground because you are not to blame for recent events. In hindsight you would never have got involved, but since you are implicated it is time to settle things down, once and for all, and walk away.
Mercury enters, and breaks a silence that you have used to shield you from aspects right now that immediately need your attention. Fear is a four letter word, but your lack of trust in yourself has blocked you somewhat and it is time to get back to where you belong. Whilst you’ll enjoy making up for lost time, someone very special comes into your life!
Much water has passed under the bridge, but there are those who would let bygones be bygones, and those who feel that they have to have their say. As Mercury enters Virgo and Saturn squares with the Sun, there comes a time to be thankful for even small mercies, and to try to better understand those who would bring conflicts to your door!
There was never a time like the present. Fortune and blessings abound as Jupiter opposes Kora, standing up for what you hold dear and giving the long awaited green light on a project that is motivated by your good intentions. Whilst there are somethings still in the balance Mercury opens up the floodgates and ensures that all is very well.
Venus dallies with Pluto midweek. Though your best intentions are foremost, Pluto is inspirational in regenerating and making fresh starts. You are not running away right now, but you should be moving on! Yes, all this makes you stronger but wiser, and that’s just what Pluto offers you; the power to succeed, even with regard to your wildest dreams!
Watch finances as a windfall is tempting you to splash out! Save money for the unexpected expenses that seem to be coming your way right now. Mercury moves onward towards Mars with a view to oppose Neptune, and splashing the cash is not an option for you right now. Be mindful that everyone should be paying their way too!
With the New Full Corn Moon approaching, it would be wise to reap the benefits that are within reach, and grab your piece of the pie! There is something to be said for starting to care for yourself; because your own specific wants, needs and desires need to be fulfilled. You will make the much needed moves you need to in good time, in your time!
A great time to be sociable with friends. You have had other priorities and have been preoccupied with things as of late, but now is a time to celebrate those bridges crossed with those people who want to be a part of your every success. Venus passes briefly by Pluto right at the start of this week, bringing you focus, and much love from all around!
Taking control is somewhat of an anathema to you, but there is nobody else to step up right now. Saving the day seems to be the most positive thing you can do, and it shows others just what you are capable of doing; as well as also surprising even yourself! You are more than you think you are, and you are about to find this out big time!

health
One in three sick notes are for mental health problems MENTAL health conditions account for close to a third of all fit notes issued in England, according to new data released by the NHS. In all, 31 per cent of fit notes written in England between December 2014 and March 2017 gave mental health as a reason, making it the most common condition for issuing the notes. A fifth of those fit notes were issued for a period of absence of more than 12 weeks. Stress and anxiety was one of the biggest causes of fit notes issued for mental health reasons. The number of fit notes known to have been written for stress and anxietyrelated conditions from included practices increased by around 14 per cent from 503,000 in 2015/16 to 573,000 in 2016/17. Musculoskeletal conditions were the second most common reason given for issuing fit notes. Women accounted for more than half of the total number of fit notes issued in the reporting period, from a low of 53.8 per cent in August 2015 to a high of 57.8 per
cent in January 2017, according to the experimental report. NHS Digital said that this was the first time that information had been collected from GPs and analysed. These practices are responsible for around two-thirds of working age patients registered with a GP in England. The fit note - or Medical Statement of Fitness to Work was introduced in 2010 in response to the Black report on ill health among working age people, so GPs could give advice how a patient might return to work depending on workplace adjustments and support, rather than simply stating they were too sick to work. Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England told the English press: "These figures explain why the NHS is now putting mental health front and centre, in what was recently independently described as 'the world's most ambitious effort to treat depression, anxiety and other common mental illnesses'."
Beauty tips Egg remedy for frizzy hair FOR many, frizzy hair is a daily battle. For others, it can be an occasional problem. Frizzy hair can look dull and be very difficult to style. The main cause of frizzy hair is lack of moisture. The cuticle layers on hair strands need moisture to make them smooth. Eggs are one of the most popular home remedies for frizzy hair. Egg yolks are rich in fats and proteins and are
naturally moisturizing, while egg whites contain enzymes that kill bacteria and remove unwanted oils from the scalp: Whisk one egg and add one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix it well. Olive oil will act as an emollient and help lock moisture into your hair. Apply it on your hair and leave it on for about a half an hour. Rinse it out and wash your hair thoroughly. Make sure you use a rich nourishing shampoo and conditioner.
Castor oil hacks Nail treatment To fight pesky fungal infections in your nail beds, ragged cuticles and brittle nails, pour castor oil into a bowl with one-part Epsom salt and three-parts water. Soak for about 15 minutes. If you have the time, repeat this treatment daily. Castor oil's anti-viral, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties will help strengthen your nails, so you'll be able to try the polish-free look in no time. Scarring To treat smaller scars or blemishes, use a cotton ball and dab the oil directly onto the intended spot and leave it on for as long as possible — overnight, if you can. Be careful, because like olive oil, castor can leave annoying stains. Sunburn Castor oil can help heal your sunburn immediately by rubbing the oil directly on the burn. It has the same cooling sensation as aloe and its ricinoleic acid will protect any burn-induced blisters that pop from infection-causing bacteria and conquer inflammation!

What are the best options to correct my vision while playing sports? Nerea Galdos, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Marbella When exercising, it’s important that you have the correct eye wear to help you with your overall comfort and performance and protect your eyes.
What effect can being surrounded by high levels of noise have on our ears and our general health? Not only can it be difficult to concentrate when our surroundings are loud, but the health of your ears can also be damaged. You might not realise it, but we are all constantly surrounded by background noise. Whether it’s passing traffic, being sat on the patio, the sounds of the supermarket during the weekly shop; it’s difficult to get away from the buzz. According to the World Health Organisation, there are approximately 1.1
billion younger people who are at risk of developing a hearing loss due to the use of personal audio devices. These are popular and can often be listened to at unsafe volumes. Noise-induced hearing loss describes a hearing loss that is caused by either longterm exposure to noise or being subject to excessively loud sounds. Being exposed to these noises can affect the hair cells which are inside the ear, and when they’re healthy, they help pass sounds to the brain to be processed. When they are damaged, they no longer work as they should
and it becomes difficult for sound to be passed through the ear and as a result, a loss of hearing occurs. The sound waves created as a result of the noise impacts on the hair cells, which can cause temporary or permanent damage. There are a number of symptoms associated with a loss of hearing: a. Finding it difficult to hear the TV or feeling that you need it at a higher volume than you used to. b. Struggling to hear someone when there is additional background noise. c. Struggling to find out which direction a sound is
coming from without looking around. d. Feeling more fatigued than usual when you have to listen to lots of sounds in a day. Protecting your hearing is essential to avoiding hearing loss. If you suspect you have a hearing loss, whether due to exposure to noise or any other cause, it’s best to seek help as soon as you can. In some instances, a solution as simple as cleaning the ear of wax could help the problem. However, in other instances, it may be that you could benefit from using a hearing device, such as hearing aids.
Feet and toes and nails
Men’s feet are pretty lowmaintenance, but they can still benefit from some basic foot care. Rough skin, bad odour and nasty nails are big turn-offs – ask anyone. Keep your feet in great form with these best foot care tips for men.
1. Condition your feet with men’s body moisturizer. Hydrating your feet with a body lotion is critical to keeping rough, dry patches and calluses at bay. Apply immediately after showering to maximize moisture absorption and prevent dry skin. 2. Wash between your toes. A lot of guys don’t pay much attention to their feet, even in the shower. The area between your toes traps dirt easily and is a breeding ground for bacteria; athlete’s foot may develop if you don’t regularly clean between your toes. 3. Wear shoes that fit. Rough skin on your feet is usually
the result of wearing shoes that are too tight. The tightness creates friction that can contribute to calluses. Your feet need space so get shoes that fit properly and have soft padding to reduce your risk of calluses and corns. 4. Trim your nails the right way. When you trim your toenails, make sure you’re trimming them straight across and not rounded. Rounded nail-cutting can increase your risk of ingrown toenails, which is pretty painful. Also, trim your toenails at regular intervals. 5. Wear sandals or shoes in communal locations like the gym or public showers. The warm, humid floor of the locker room is swarming with bacteria, so always wear something on your feet at these types of public places.
Should I wear glasses when I play sport? Yes if you need them, but look for the most suitable corrective eyewear for the sport you’re taking part in. Overall glasses should fit securely, with a robust design to protect your eyes and have the right level of visual correction to improve your performance. What are the best glasses for cycling? Wear tinted wrap around glasses that follow the contours of the face and stop wind, light and debris coming in from around the sides. What are the best glasses for golf? As well ensuring wrap around glasses fit securely, lenses with green tints will help to reduce glare and offer high contrast as well as adding visual sharpness. What are the best glasses for padel? If you’re playing outside, try sport sunglasses with a lightweight wraparound sport frame and polycarbonate lenses. What about contact lenses? Contact lenses are a popular option when carrying out sport for ease and comfort and can be combined with sunglasses, or protective glasses. For questions about the different types of frames and lenses you should consider when taking part in sporting activities, it is best to ask your local optician for advice. Gin is the word There's no escaping it …. Gin is the drink on everyone's lips right now.
Once considered to be a tipple for your grandma and her mates, or sipped by the aristocracy before dinner, it is now the trendiest drink around, adored by young and not so young alike. Here in Spain, the gin phenomenon began a few years ago, with the opening of specialist gin bars, selling hundreds of different varieties alongside tonic waters of all flavours. Now, we all love a well crafted Gin and Tonic, made with our favoured spirit and mixer, but look beyond the G&T a little and a whole myriad of drinks unfold before our eyes. Gin has always been the perfect cocktail spirit, used as a base in many a mixologists repertoire and in most of the classic cocktails of the World. To celebrate the advent of Spring, here's a duo of gin based cocktails guaranteed to get you in the mood for the warmer weather. ARCHANGEL Dry, but fruity at the same time, the bittersweet Aperol adds brightness with rhubarb and bitter orange flavors, while the cucumber gives the drink an airy and refreshing side. Use a London dry gin such as Beefeater 24, or try Hendrick's to rev up the cucumber flavor or Plymouth for an even lighter taste. Ingredients: 3 x Parts Gin 2 x Parts Aperol 2 x Cucumber slices Lemon twist for garnish Add the cucumber slices to the bottom of a mixing glass. Muddle them to break up, but do not pulverize completely. Add gin and Aperol to mixing glass then fill 2/3 with ice and stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled
cocktail glass, garnish with lemon twist and serve. BROWN GIN This recipe is a more bitter take on the classic Pink Gin. The original dates back to the British Navy in the 1800s, when sailors treated their sea sickness and other ailments with Angostura bitters. Bitters on their own proved a little too eye watering, so they tried mixing Plymouth gin with a dash or two of Angostura, to help it go down smoother. Hey presto, a classic was born. This version is like Pink Gin on steroids, using 15 dashes of Angostura. In a larger dose the sugar in the Angostura will actually sweeten up the gin. The result is bitter and delicious. And, there's also a lemon twist thrown in to help prevent scurvy. This is a must try for any lover of the other trendy bitter drink around at the moment …. Jagermeister. Ingredients: 3 x parts London dry gin 15 x dashes Angostura bitters Garnish with Lemon twist Add gin and bitters to a mixing glass. Fill 2/3 with ice and stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with the lemon twist and serve.
Crusted rack of lamb with redcurrant sauce RACK OF lamb is one of my favourite cuts of meat but I haven’t seen a prepared rack since I came to Spain. Not to be put off, I asked my butcher for six loin chops in one piece and she (yes, she) knew exactly what I meant. She even trimmed and chined the bones to make it easier to cut when cooked. If you can’t find redcurrant jelly you could use raspberry or blackberry jam, but you may need to sieve the sauce to remove the pips.
INGREDIENTS
One rack of lamb wit h six chops 1 tbls Dijon mustard 1 tsp honey 1 slice stale wholeme al bread in crumbs 125 ml beef stock 125 ml red wine 1tbls redcurrant jelly
1. Pre-heat the oven to 190 degrees C. 2. Mix the mustard and honey then spread thickly on the back of the rack of lamb. Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish and press the mustard side of the rack into crumbs so that you have a thick coating. Place in the rack in a shallow roasting dish and cook for 35 minutes. (This will leave the lamb pink). 3. Meanwhile make the sauce. Place the beef stock and red wine in a small saucepan and boil rapidly for about 10 minutes until the liquid has reduced by half. Stir in the redcurrant jelly and boil for a further 4-5 minutes until it has completely melted. 4. When the lamb is cooked, remove from the oven and cut into two pieces. Serve with the sauce poured over and around. Serves 2. Preparation time: 5 minutes. Cooking time: 35 minutes

Welsh wizard Woodburn was “ready”
West Indies opener joins Yorkshire
their matchday squad this season so far. Coleman concluded: “It will be up to Jurgen and Ben on how far or close he is to the first team. What we’ve seen is that he is a very bright player and he’s certainly shown enough with us again. Whatever comes in the next six or 12 months will be up to Jurgen and Ben himself.”
BRITISH world number two, Andy Murray says he will “most likely” miss the rest of the season because of continuing problems with his hip. Murray, 30, pulled out of the current US Open tournament two days before it started and has not played since limping off Centre Court at Wimbledon in July. He has taken the decision to withdraw from October’s ATP Tour events in Beijing and Shanghai and will almost certainly miss the events in Vienna and Paris later that month. “This is the best decision for my long-term future,” said Murray. In a statement posted on social media, Murray said he will begin his 2018 season at the Brisbane International, starting on 1 January, in preparation for the Australian Open, which begins on 15 January, following a “frustrating year on court for many reasons”. “I’m confident after this
extended period of rest and rehabilitation I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season,” he said. “I have a fantastic team working alongside me to help me through this process and appreciate the support from them and all of my fans over this difficult period.” The three-time Grand Slam champion travelled to New York with the expectation of playing the US Open and practised all week before withdrawing on 26 August. Earlier this week, Sir Andy said he had spoken with several leading hip specialists and his own team before reaching the decision not to defend his China Open and Shanghai Masters titles.

FOLLOWING his success in the current series against England, West Indies opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite has been signed up by Yorkshire for the final two games of the 2017 County Championship season. Brathwaite, 24, scored a century at Yorkshire’s home ground of Headingley in the second Test Match at the end of August and will replace the Australian Shaun Marsh in the squad. Yorkshire’s head coach Andrew Gale said: “Kraigg played exceptionally well here and if you can get runs at Headingley then you can do it anywhere. “We wanted to replace Shaun with experience and that is tricky at this time of year because there are not too many people playing consistent cricket and are in form. We’re excited to have Kraigg on board.” Brathwaite himself is more than delighted to be picked up by the Tykes. “Before the second Test I was speaking to my agent and he was telling me he was talking to Yorkshire’s coaching staff. After the game he came back to me telling me he was getting some quality feedback. They really wanted me and I was very happy because Yorkshire is a very big club in England and I’m very happy and proud to have been selected by them.” He is expected to play against Warwickshire and Essex once his opening duties with the West Indies finish with the Third Test Match that began at Lord’s yesterday (Thursday).

THE REGULAR debate of ‘club versus country’ has once again come to the fore following the spectacular debut of 17-year-old Ben Woodburn. His Welsh national team manager Chris Coleman said that he believed his young forward was “ready” for his first international cap despite of concerns expressed by club boss Jurgen Klopp. Woodburn, 17, scored the winner on his debut against Austria in the recent series of World Cup qualifiers after coming on as a late substitute, then came off the bench again in Moldova to set up Hal Robson-Kanu’s 80th-minute opener. “Jurgen felt it was a bit early for Ben,” CELEBRATION: said Coleman. “But we’ve all got opin- Woodburn and Gareth Bale ions, which is what is great about foot(right) after ball.” debut goal. Klopp expressed his misgivings when Woodburn was first called into weren’t going to start him in both the senior squad for a World Cup quali- games and play him for 90 minutes. We fier against the Republic of Ireland in were going to be choosy with when we use him - but he’s a good young talent, March, saying he was “surprised”. Coleman said: “I felt that if he was that’s for sure.” Woodburn made nine appearances in in the first team for Liverpool - and he is, he scored that great debut goal at his breakthrough season for Liverpool the Kop end - then he was ready. Murray out of remaining Tour events
IN SPITE of all the hype and the promotion of the event, the expected ‘record breaking’ revenue for the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather fight last month fell someway short. According to figures released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission the bout took $55,414,865.79 (€46,000,000) which is well below the record gate money taken when Mayweather took on
Manny Pacquiao in February 2015. Many times during the build-up to the fight, those involved in its promotion appeared to be in no doubt whatsoever that it would break records, including for the gate. However, the numbers do make it the second highest grossing fight in Nevada history, $35 million ahead of Mayweather’s 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez.
Seven of the top eight largest grossing gates in Nevada’s history include a fight involving Floyd Mayweather. Only Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield’s 1999 fight break Mayweather’s monopoly on the top eight. The main reason why the fight did not hit the expected numbers is said to be the cost of the tickets. Only 13,094 were sold for the event, with a further 137 of those
in attendance receiving complimentary tickets. The T-Mobile Arena, where the fight was held, has a capacity of 20,500. Ticket prices ranged from $500 to $10,000 - undoubtedly a considerable factor in 36 per cent of the arena’s seats being empty. Pay-per-view numbers for the fight have yet to be released, although sources suggest it attracted around $6.5m (€5m).
