The project began 13 years ago under former Socialist Mayor Ignacio Ramos and was supposed to cost €2.4 million. Work on the building, which was to include an underground car park, topped with a dove, 30 metres high, has been frozen since 2006 after costs spiralled with €4 million having already been
spent on the project. Now, the ‘neck’ of the dove on top of the building has been pulled down, at a cost of €64,000. Mayor Jose Fidel Ros said the government team decided to remove the tower or ‘neck’ of La Paloma, which was in a dangerous state “and then finish a work that is now an embarrassment to our people.” He said: “We will try to take advantage of the rest of the building and finish it with minimal budget.”

Children’s cancer pledge FINANCIAL aid to children suffering from cancer will continue. That’s the response of the Valencian Government following a complaint made by the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer Valencia (Aspanion) which claims at least a dozen families in Alicante Province had already had aid claims refused. The Government said those claims may have been denied because they were filed prematurely. According to regulations, a petition must be made six
months after the diagnosis of the disease. The recognition of disability allows families of children to obtain benefits during treatment such as free medication, adapting vehicles to carry a wheelchair and access to other grants and help. The Regional Secretary of Personal Autonomy and Dependence, Manuel Escolano, said they will: “continue to work, as usual, in collaboration with organisations such as Aspanion to improve the quality of life of children with cancer.”

OLLYWOOD star Alec Baldwin is in Spain for the filming of the fifth instalment of Spain’s best-known and most profitable film saga,

Although little more is known, Baldwin is playing the villain of the piece, and is accompanied in Spain by his wife, Hilaria Thomas, whose parents are Spanish and allegedly convinced him to take part in the film. Also with them is their daughter, Carmen Gabriela, born in August last year. The Torrente films are dark comedies written, directed and starring Santiago Segura, who plays a lazy, rude, drunk, rightwing cop in Madrid. The first film was released in 1998 and made more than €3 million at the box office; the most recent was released in 2011 and made more than €19.5 million. Each of the films has included numerous Spanish actors and celebrities. The fifth instalment began filming late last year and is due to be released this October. A sad farewell to Dexter THE Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) in Rojales has announced that popular mule Dexter has been put to sleep. Dexter, an Andalucian mule, was one of the most
popular equines at the centre and was a major attraction during the Sunday afternoon open days often accompanied by his best friend Valentino, the donkey.
Being half horse and half donkey, Dexter was at home with all the other 63 equines. Dexter was rescued in December 2011 after being found wandering on a

During treatment for this illness Dexter stopped breathing and was brought back to life thanks to the skill of Dorothea, the vet. Sue Weeding, co-founder of the EHCRC said: “Last summer Dexter suffered a mild stroke we all hoped he had overcome, but sadly this was not the case. He
was developing a type of equine senile dementia which progressed rapidly over the last two days of his life. He became disorientated, unaware of his surroundings and unable to control his movements.” She added: “The heartrending decision to put Dexter to sleep was made after consultation with Dorothea and my husband Rod and I knew nothing more could be done for Dexter.” Call 636 062 000 or visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

Connery denies any involvement ACTOR Sean Connery has reportedly denied his involvement with the Goldfinger case and claims he had no ties to deceased Marbella mayor, Jesus Gil. Authorities in the Bahamas sent the statements of actor Sean Connery and his wife to a court in Marbella last month. According to a local Spanish daily, he said that he may have seen Gil at a public event, and when his image was used without his consent in videos to boost Gil’s electoral campaign, he had his lawyer ask for the images to be removed and they were. Last year, Connery was given six months to answer questions about the sale of his house in Marbella in 1999 or face
possible arrest. His villa, Malibu, was demolished and replaced with a development of more than 70 apartments sold for an estimated €54.5 million. It is claimed that planning regulations stipulated that only five apartments could be built on the site. More than 15 people, including ex-mayor of Marbella, Julian Muñoz, and former town planning
chief Juan Antonio Roca, face trial over the so-called ‘Goldfinger’ probe, named after Connery’s 1964 Bond film. The actor denies knowing either of them. The court in Marbella has now received the couple’s sworn statements made before a notary and their lawyers, which the couple says were given of their own will with the aim of helping the investigation.

per cent. The economic crisis is partly responsible and higher taxes at some Spanish airports, but the AVE has taken the heaviest toll on domestic flights. After the high-speed train lost 485,000 passengers in 2012, the Ministry of Public Works lowered fares. That decision paid off and the AVE moved 25.4 million people in 2013, an increase of 13.5 per cent.
Wage freeze for millions SPAIN’S biggest companies froze salaries for 4.35 million employees last year. Spain’s Minister of Labour Fatima Bañez read these figures without pessimism. “After a long period of intense salary increases, the Spanish economy is carrying out vital adjustments to correct significant imbalances,” Bañez said. She refuted suggestions that this was deliberate on the government’s part. “Nobody could claim that Spain has a model of low salaries,” the minister added. “That strategy is doomed to failure.” Official statistics relating to salaries are not particularly revealing and the government does little to clarify them, analysts claim.
The Hacienda (tax office) figures are reliable but there are 12 million wage-earners and they reveal only the earnings of the 4.35 million workers employed by companies whose turnover exceeds €6 million a year. These also slashed 163,000 jobs last year. Hacienda pointed out that there was a general strike in 2012 on November 15 and civil servants lost their Christmas bonus that year. These factors combined to make 2013 look better than it was with a 0.6 salary increase in the last quarter. Otherwise last year’s freeze would instead have meant a fall in earnings for those 4.35 million workers.

Broadband competition LAST year Jazztel gained more broadband clients than Telefonica, the first operator ever to achieve this. But it remained way behind the Spanish giants in total numbers of customers. In 2013 Telefonica (Movistar) acquired 237,326 more broadband clients, reaching 5.61 million homes. Jazztel added a further
263,114 new lines and now provides 855,109 broadband connections. Vodafone’s pursuit of the Spanish operator Ono was prompted by Telefonica’s dominance. The UK group commands only 7.6 per cent of the ADSL market and sees the cable operator as an opportunity to enter the market with a firm tread.

AVE flies high SPAIN’s AVE high-speed train is making inroads into domestic air travel. Last year was the worst for internal flights since late 2001 when the 9-11 terrorist attack on New York’s Twin Towers temporarily deterred all air travel. Fewer than 28.7 million passengers flew national routes last year, 4.7 million below 2012’s figures and a year-on-year fall of 14

Loans alliance for Santander/Citroen BANCO SANTANDER was yesterday (Wednesday) due to officially announce a loans alliance with PSA Peugeot Citroen. The Madrid-based bank is expected to enter 50-50 joint ventures with Banque PSA Finance, Peugeot’s financing
branch, sources told news agency Reuters. It would also acquire a portfolio of loans from the carmaker’s financing arm. Consecutive rating downgrades driven by a drop in car sales in Europe forced the French Government to
intervene, guaranteeing €7 billion of Banque PSA Finance borrowing. This was part of a rescue totalling €18.5 billion. The operation would solve Peugeot’s capital and cash flow problems, and would eventually replace the French state

Spanish university graduates facing problems in the labour market SPANISH university graduates are having problems finding their place in the labour market. Almost 40 per cent of them hold a post for which they are overqualified, a report by the Ministry of Education has revealed. Of the students graduated in 2012, 22.8 per cent of them have a job that requires a lesser qualification, whereas the job of 16.8 per cent of them requires no qualification. This situation is more seen with graduates in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
The report on the Spanish university system also reveals that graduates don’t have the type of contract expected for their qualification; 26.1 per cent of them have a full-time temporary contract, while 9.6 per cent have a part-time temporary contract. Just 8.4 per cent of Spanish university graduates have an indefinite contract, but only part-time. Unemployment rates among graduate students in Spain also show discouraging results. In 2011, 9.7 per cent of unemployed men
in Spain aged between 25 and 64 held a university degree. Among women this figure went up to 11 per cent. This clearly contrasts with the average unemployment rate of graduates within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which was of 4.2 and 5 per cent respectively. But figures are even worse for younger people, with 16.2 per cent of graduates aged between 25 and 32 being unemployed, more than double in the OECD (6.8 per cent).
recapitalisation deal with Chinese car-maker Dongfeng. Chinese press reported that the state-owned manufacturer is about to close an operation to buy 14 per cent of Peugeot’s capital. This would make Dongfeng one of the three main shareholders of the French group. Later in January, Dongfeng and Peugeot reached an outline deal to increase its capital by €3 billion. PSA Peugeot has a loan portfolio of €22 billion in 23 markets, of which €11.64 billion come from Western Europe and €8.38 billion from France. In the first quarter of 2013, it loaned nearly 376,000 vehicles, yielding €151 million in profits, 25 per cent less than in the same period the previous year.
Spain 49th in 2014 Index of Economic Freedom SPAIN is the 49th freest economy in the world, the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom published by The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation says. This concept, defined by the report as the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labour and property, is measured based on 10 quantitative and qualitative factors. Spain’s economic freedom score is of 67.2 points, 0.8 points lower than last year when it ranked 46th. This is mainly due to declines in the management of government spending, business freedom, and labour freedom. These elements, the annual index points out, have outweighed small improvements in trade freedom and freedom from corruption. Within the European Union, Spain ranks 22nd, behind Switzerland (first), Ireland (second) and the United Kingdom (fifth).
WORLD ECONOMY: Spain’s economic freedom scored 67.2 points. It is, however, placed in a better position than bigger economic powers like France (33rd), or Italy (35th). Europe’s score is still above world averages, but the index editors point out that it “has been undergoing tumultuous and uncertain times,” such as the sovereign debt crisis affecting the Eurozone. “Europe’s overall economic freedom rating remains undermined by weak scores in the management of public
spending, reflecting the cost of expanding government services and transfer payments that plainly hinder both productivity growth and dynamic job creation,” the editors wrote. In the 20 years this index has been published, the economic freedom score of Spain has improved by 4.4 points. The greatest achievements have been accomplished in the areas of market openness
and freedom from corruption, the report indicates. On a more negative note, the index points out that Spain continues to score below the world average in fiscal freedom, government spending and labour freedom. According to James Roberts, the index shows “that when economic freedom increases, global economy grows and poverty decreases.” Roberts, a researcher at The Heritage Foundation, made this claim during the launch of the index in Spain organised by think-tank FAES. “Countries with higher levels of economic freedom substantially outperform others in aspects such as economic growth, per-capita incomes, health care, education, protection of the environment, reduction of poverty and general welfare,” he explained. Roberts was joined by the Secretary of State for Trade, Jaime Garcia-Legaz, who
recognised Spain’s economy has relatively worsened. In that sense, Garcia-Legaz pointed out that the Spanish regions should take additional measures to control the public expenditure. “Spain needs to make an additional effort in budgetary consolidation and public expenditure reduction but, mainly because of the current distribution and the level of expenditure, it is the Autonomous Communities which have a longer way ahead than the State Administration or local administrative bodies,” he stated. Finally, Garcia-Legaz mentioned the two-year time lag that comes together with the methodology of the index. This means the 2014 edition analyses data up to June 2012, and that further measures taken by the Spanish Government to improve the economy will be shown in the index from next year.

OPINION & COMMENT
Radiotherapy needs to be nearer home I HAVE recently finished radiotherapy at the Hospital Clinic Benidorm, referred there by Denia Hospital. Firstly I found everyone at both hospitals very friendly and caring and wish to thank them. My only problem was I found the travelling from Javea to Benidorm every day quite tiring, also quite expensive even using my own car, but finding someone to drive me. I talked to another patient who travelled from Pego every day. I wondered why Denia Hospital did not have this facility considering the number of people being treated for various cancer problems. I realise it is probably a question of funding such a machine and wondered if it were possible for some of the charities and associations to channel some of the money raised to fund such a project. I was lucky that my treatment did not run into many weeks but some of the people I spoke to were having to go for up to 27 weeks. Please could this be considered bearing in mind the number of people of all nationalities who require treatment. Patricia, Javea (Alicante)

Editor’s note: Gas companies do not send workmen out to check installations ‘on spec’. For a service, an appointment should be made with your local gas supplier.
Thanks Ric! I WOULD like to say a big thank you to your columnist in Almeria, Ric Polansky, for his article in Edition 1492 regarding the almond blossom trail. We did the trip today (from our base at Cabo de Gata) and thoroughly enjoyed it. We will go back in a couple of weeks’ time to see if there is more blossom at the higher levels. We wouldn’t have known about this route had it not been for you. Rowan and Bernard Lee, Cabo de Gata (Almeria) TAKEN FROM MY WINDOW IN LOS ALMACHARES, NERJA.
I have complained to the council about the constant sobbing, howling and screeching that is ubiquitous and uncivilised. I haven’t even had the courtesy of a reply and the girl I spoke to said ‘they are just dogs!’ Beverley Saunders, Alhaurin el Grande (Malaga)
Total sympathy Party town I AM in total sympathy with Dave from Turre’s remarks regarding cruel dog owners. (Issue 1492). We own two rescue dogs, and in the three-and-a-half years we have lived here I have also rescued eight puppies that were left out in the sun to die, and have been involved in the rescue of an adult dog. I have tried talking with Spanish dog owners. “It doesn’t matter,” was the man’s reply when I asked why a dog in very poor condition was always on a leash, in all weather. Another looked at me blankly when I suggested that it was unacceptable for her dog to have been barking all night.

I WAS angered by the letter from Ms Morrison regarding noise levels (Issue 1492). Benidorm is a holiday resort, people spend hard-earned money to holiday here and have not come here to behave as if they were sat at home in the UK. In 1950, Benidorm was a fishing village, and has grown into a business which generates a lot of wealth. Brits who decide to move to Spain, I’m presuming Jane Morrison is one, and make a home in the epicentre of a holiday resort should have more sense. All the Spanish that I have met who make a living
WHEN YOU WRITE All letters, whether by email or post, should carry the writer’s postal address, NIE and contact number though only the name and town will be published. Letters may also be edited. Readers who have missed earlier correspondence can see all letters posted on:

with their businesses in the resort live out in the hills. I would suggest Jane Morrison move to a more suitable location. Failing that, she should speak with the owner of her apartment block and suggest that he not be so greedy as to rent out an apartment in a residential block to holidaymakers to make a fast buck. Benidorm has gained a particular kind of market which locals and expats should be a bit more grateful for. With flights, apartments and newer trends beginning to grow in other European resorts, groups
Tommi Tinkerboy (By email) may well start to holiday elsewhere. Enjoy the partying while it lasts, the quietness can be so much worse. Mark (By email)
Be careful WE live just outside Salares (not far from Competa) and think we might have been visited by bogus gasmen. We had three phone calls from ‘a gas company’ saying they were coming to inspect our installation. We were suspicious but let them in and when they started to tell us what was wrong we pointed out that we had a legal revision and if there was a problem we would use our own plumber, who had been in the house only a few days earlier and replaced one of the pipes they said was illegal. They left but not before I had taken a photo of their very old van which was painted in orange and white but had no lettering. People need to be
Barbaric practice IT was good to see your article on the subject of Female Genital Mutilation. It is a practice which has always horrified me and it is good to see that the Spanish authorities are making an effort to try to rule it out amongst families from countries where it is common practice. It may be traditional, but it is also barbaric, and women need to know the threats to which they are exposing their daughters. A good education for both boys and girls, in most cases, would be much more effective in making sure young women remain ‘pure’ until marriage, if this is what their culture ordains. Most importantly, teach men to control their sexual urges and respect the women and girls. I have ordered one of the bracelets you mentioned from www.mundocooperante.org and if the money is just one step closer to preventing a girl from being mutilated, it will have been worth it. I will look into doing more in this cause. Amanda Yates, Benalmadena (Malaga)

• Leonardo Di Caprio • Josh Hamilton
In the 1920s, the United States of America was a lawless place. The Bureau of Investigation - later to become the FBI - was still in its infancy and incapable of calling Tommy gun-wielding gangsters to heel. Then came J Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio). Over almost half a century he revolutionised the US crime-fighting agency, cracking down on famous hoodlums.

Notting Hill (Film, 1999) Released in 1999, this hugely popular romcom, produced by the team behind Four Weddings And A Funeral, won the Bafta Audience Award and an Evening Standard Peter Sellers Award for Comedy. Divorcee William Thacker (Hugh Grant) runs an unprofitable bookshop in a trendy London neighbourhood, which attracts American movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) as a customer. Little Fockers (Film, 2010) BBC 3 from 10:00pm to 11:30pm The Meet The Parents franchise returns for a fun third instalment, and there's plenty more laughs as Stiller's Greg Focker once again goes head-to-head with humourless father-in-law De Niro. Greg (Ben Stiller) and Pam (Teri Polo) Focker are hosting their twins' fifth birthday party, giving their parents Jack (Robert De Niro) and Dina (Blythe Danner) and Bernie (Hoffman) and Roz (Barbara Streisand) a prime opportunity to reignite their feud. After a decade of verbally torturing Greg, however, fearsome fatherinlaw Jack seems to be warming to the hapless male nurse, and, after a health scare, is even priming Greg to take his place at the head of the family. But things soon conspire to blow up in Greg's face when Jack misconstrues an encounter between his son-in-law and flirtatious Viagra sales rep Andi (Jessica Alba), as Pam's golden boy ex Kevin (Owen Wilson) reappears on the scene.

FINANCE Spain’s asset reporting law applies to anyone who is resident in Spain and owns assets outside the country worth €50,000 or more. The deadline is 31st March each year. We receive many queries from people who are not sure if they need to file a report or not. Residency is an important starting point. The obligation to report your overseas assets on Modelo 720 is only imposed on Spanish residents. If you own property here but are not resident, it does not apply to you, but you need to be 100% sure you do not fulfil any of the residency criteria. Tax residency in Spain can be more complex than you realise. Many people believe they are not resident but actually are, and so should be paying tax. This issue is even more critical with the reporting law, since the consequences for failing to report are much higher than ever before – you can lose more than the value of the asset. The government is also aware that some people who meet the residency criteria choose not to declare themselves as such. The tax agency has been cracking

Residency Issues And Spain’s Reporting Law By Robert Croizat, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks
down on this, for example by looking through utility bills and lists of foreign children in local schools. It can also use information received from abroad under exchange of financial information agreements. If you were resident in Spain in 2012, you should have submitted Form 720 last year. You then only need to report again if the value of an asset increased by €20,000 or
more, or if you bought or sold an asset. If you became resident in 2013, you need to make your first declaration now. You report the value of assets as at 31st December 2013. With bank accounts you also need to include the average balance over the last three months of 2013, and with property the acquisition value. If you became resident this year, you will need to report assets as at 31st December 2014, so your first deadline is 31st March 2015. Tax residency in Spain You are resident for tax purposes - and so liable for income, capital gains and wealth taxes on your worldwide assets and subject to Spanish succession tax rules - if any of the following apply. • You spend more than 183 days
here in one calendar year. • Your “centre of economic interests” is in Spain. • Your “centre of vital interests” is in Spain - i.e. your spouse and/or your minor children live here, even if you spend under 183 days here. There is no split year treatment in Spain. You are either resident or not resident for the whole year. You may be regarded as UK resident at the same time, in which case you need to look at the UK/Spain Tax Treaty rules. If you own property and spend much time here each year, you need to know where you stand, tax wise, so you can establish the best way forward. With specialist advice you could structure your assets to be tax efficient in Spain, and so that you need not worry about Form 720.
The only way to be certain that you understand all the implications of the complicated asset reporting law, the residency issues and how to legitimately structure your assets tax efficiently in Spain, is to take professional advice from an established tax and wealth manager. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. In 19th-century America, civil war continues to rage between the Confederate south and the federal United States. Both sides grow tired of the war, but one issue keeps federal leader Abraham Lincoln (Daniel DayLewis) from forming peace the South's insistence on the use of slavery. He's determined to force through an amendment to the constitution which would free thousands of slaves, but as more and more lives are sacrificed to the war, his proud position comes under scrutiny from all sides of the political spectrum, and his chances of creating history look slimmer with each month that passes.

Is security going too far? SECURITY at Heathrow airport in the UK recently confiscated a Toy Story Woody the cowboy doll because he was carrying a miniature gun.
A
NGELA WILLIAMS, aged 57, from La Marina Pueblo, Alicante, believes the authorities may have gone a bit too far in confiscating the Woody toy: “It is a bit over the top and they should be able to tell if it is just a toy or something more. I would worry now about taking my grandkids to the airport and what toys they were carrying.” Carl Barnett, aged 69, from urbanisation La Marina, Alicante, however, believes it is right that the authorities are extra cautious: “It is sad but in today’s climate it is better to be safe

than sorry.” Retired Carrie Hipkins, aged 62, also agrees: “You can’t take any risks and if he was carrying his child’s toy without his child being with him, it would look a little odd to the authorities, so I think they were right to check.” Terry and June Moore, aged 67 and 64, who live in Partaloa and are both retired, agree that security is important, but feel a liitle leeway is required. “We don’t think a toy should be impounded. We are all for security, but common sense should prevail if they are satisfied it is a toy. In our opinion, the more security there is, the better.”
June Moore
Ron Hardy, 78, who lives in Albox, Almeria, said: “It is a bit ridiculous to take away a toy. They should get a life and get out more. I haven’t flown in a long time but obviously airport security is generally very important.” But Anne Collins, a 28-year-old waitress from Marbella, Malaga, feels airport security is getting too onerous. “Why on earth can you not take through a bottle of water? I was at Stansted airport and security was ridiculous. The queues to get through were about a mile long. Yes, there should be checks, but some of the security personnel seem to be jobsworths who take things to extremes.”

TORREVIEJA’S leading and renowned dental practice, Carredent, has been open for nearly seven years, owned and run by husband and wife team Ian and Alison Smith. Ian studied Dentistry at Liverpool University for five years while Alison is a qualified oral health educator, radiographer and dental nurse. In that time they have seen thousands of happy patients and are proud to say that they are still serving patients from their original practice in Manchester, who prefer to travel to Spain to see their trusted dental team. Even people with just holiday homes in Spain tie in their visits from the UK or Ireland with a trip to the dentist. The practice has become so busy and popular that they have recently welcomed the addition of new dentist, Nick, and receptionist and surgery worker, Angie. Fast track to weight loss With Jonathan Gilchrist, Costa Blanca’s top hypnotherapist IT is a fact that women are judged by their appearance more than men, which does not help matters. A staggering 50 per cent of women believe themselves to be overweight, yet only 20 per cent of them are indeed too heavy for their height. Weight problems, be they in relation to under or overeating, stem from relationships with food and if you are genuinely overweight it is almost a certainty that your relationship with food is detrimental to your health. Like everything else in life, we’re taught from an early age how to respond to certain stimuli and our morals and habits stem from there. Our parents teach us what to do and these life lessons become set in stone and follow us through the entirety of our life. As a child, you might have been forced to stay at the table to finish the food on your plate. It didn’t matter that you were full, you had to think of the ‘starving children in Africa.’ This is an example of early programming by parents. The Fast Track Weight Control session naturally promotes healthy eating and also encourages
you to take more interest in your own shape and vitality. Fast Track Hypnosis Weight Control or the Gastroband session takes place within 30 minutes and those minutes could change your life forever. As part of the process, there are also back-up CDs included and these are used to reinforce the session and to cut any cravings. Your self-esteem and confidence will sky rocket, because you can be proud of yourself and the fact you have achieved that weight loss. If you’re ready to change your life, ready to change the way you view yourself and if you’re ready to stop caring about the rest of the world’s opinion, then make today the day for that change. Alan and Jonathan Gilchrist hold their Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Quesada and
Benidorm. For an appointment, brochure, or free initial consultation, contact Alan
on 659 229 408 or Jonathan on 691 784 954 or visit www.alangilchrist inspain.com

New Free-Standing Neater Heater, which can be hung on the wall
Neater Heater is pleased to be able to introduce you to the Neo 2 Heater from its new Norwegian supplier, Adax. “The original Neo heater has already proven to be an enormous hit,” says co-owner Richard Winter. “Its style and efficiency alone has made it stand out from the crowd, but when you include the inbuilt timer and automatic temperature reduction functions, it has become very popular. “The next generation Neo 2, however, goes one step further as it has the ability to be both wall-mounted and, simply by unclipping it from the bracket, free standing as well. Until now with most heaters, including our other Neater Heaters, the customer has had to make a choice between wallmounted and free standing. But not any more. Now the customer can have it wall-mounted in the living room, and simply unclip it and move it to the bedroom at night.” Neater Heater was created five years ago because, having decided to use
electricity to heat their homes, expats Richard and Tony couldn’t find anywhere in Spain that sold good, but affordable, electric heaters. The choices were either: very expensive; very inefficient; or extremely ugly and sometimes all three! However, by a stroke of good fortune, they became aware of two Norwegian manufacturers who made extremely efficient, stylish and affordable electric convector heaters. Neater Heaters can now be found warming homes from Barcelona to
Cadiz. Incorporating modern technology with Scandinavian design, Neater Heaters are stylish, economic and extremely efficient. Whether you choose the basic, but moderately priced, Adax Standard heater, or from the more stylish Beha, Neo, and Glamox ranges, you can be confident that you are choosing the best in Norwegian technology, reliability, and value for money. Now, thanks to the Neo2, we can add “mobile and versatile” to their long list of attributes. With the price of all fuels going up it is as important now, as it always has been, to choose your electric heater wisely. Neater Heaters offer the perfect balance of efficiency, economy and effectiveness. Neater Heater: Norway’s answer to heating your home in Spain. prices: “I don’t put a mark up on things so I get the materials and the customers get them at cost, so savings are passed to customers.” Currently he is able to supply and fit an 80-litre boiler which comes with a three-year manufacturer’s guarantee for €159. He is also happy to give free quotations and is regularly called out to a job to find it is something simple and
quickly fixed, and is honest with the client about that: “I won’t make out it is a big job or charge a lot of money, the goodwill is worth more than charging €40 or €50 for a 10-minute job.” Aquaquest offers a 24-hour call-out service and can do any form of home maintenance. Call David on 634 286 590 and see the advert in the Services section.

Time Out EURO WEEKLY’S SPACE FOR YOU TO TAKE A BREAK, BE INFORMED AND ENJOY A CHALLENGE
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Alan Taylor. Runtime 112 minutes. Rated 12.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Although health should be good, energy may be a little low. A bit of a mystery surrounds a close friend and your opinion may be sought. Hold fire until all the facts are known and you are sure a person has been honest with you because someone may try to keep you in the dark to get the right answer. . CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The temptation to run round like a headless chicken is strong this week. There seem to be so many demands on your time that things become confusing. Be sure you are getting enough rest because this time of the year can be fraught for you. LEO (July 24 - August 23) A situation could become complicated if you do not plan ahead. With a little thought and planning, matters can be kept simple which is always desirable. Be choosy about the company you keep because a bad character could taint by association.
February 20: Rihanna, 26. Singer, actress and fashion designer born in Saint Michael, Barbados. She is the winner, among other prizes, of seven Grammy Awards.
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Ruts are awful things to get into but even more difficult to get out of. Being cosy is one thing, but getting bogged down, mentally and physically, is another. All you need is to keep your optimism alive and use your imagination. Perhaps you are spending too much time with an older person or someone who has a dim outlook on life.

Sentimentality should not come into business or be allowed to upset your home life. What is past should remain so, do not torture yourself. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Extra pressures at work leave you feeling less than energetic. Check on your health and don't go overboard with the physical activities. Set out to become more active, socially, and maximise on relaxation. With an eye to the summer and holidays, start planning a getaway. Who will you take with you?

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) There may not be enough time to do everything you want, so why can't you just reorganise your life so there is? Not as easy as it sounds, Pisces, unless you learn the magic word: no. Know your limits and stick to them. If you've got this far with a partner you will know it's meant to be. .

Earth and the Nine Realms come under attack from the powerful Malekith and his age-old army that have existed since even before the creation of the universe. With the enemy proving near impossible to defeat, Thor approaches his adoptive brother Loki for help, despite his villainous past. Meanwhile, the hero becomes reacquainted with the woman he loves, astrophysicist Jane Foster, and takes her to Asgard in an attempt to protect her from harm.

Rosendo. Born February 23, 1954. Rosendo Mercado Ruiz is a Spanish rock singer and guitarist. He was a founding member of bands Ñu and Leño, and is considered to be a prominent exponent of the socalled ʻSpanish rock.ʼ He released his first solo album in 1985, and has had more than a dozen since. In 2006 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.

Brazilianborn footballer who plays for Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team as a central defender.
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Are you suffering from winter blues? Although it is a common feeling at this time of the year, keep optimistic. There is so much to look forward to, in fact, that you are spoilt for choice. Although your social life may be in a bit of a rut, some sparkling moves from you will get things moving. Bring people together for a little party with music and good wine.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) A loss of patience with a situation shows this week but is not to your advantage. Whatever you feel, be subtle in your approach. Try to see your position clearly and the result will be that you realise you have more control than you thought. Seeking advice while being honest and telling the full story serves best.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Recent events have perhaps left a gap in your social life that is hard to fill. Patience is needed because it would be foolish to rush into something new if your heart is involved. Concentrating on work and other people will alleviate any loneliness. This may seem a short-term solution but it is all that is needed for now.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) A feeling that you should totally commit yourself to something or someone this week should be avoided. You will come up against a brick wall if a situation is forced. Time is all that is required to see things change for the better. The feeling that you need to excuse yourself for something is not true.

In late 1903 Einstein’s illegitimate daughter ‘Lieserl’, aged around 21 months, disappears without a trace in Serbia. As Sherlock Holmes exclaims in The Mystery of Einstein’s Daughter, ‘The most ruthless effort has been made by public officials, priests, monks, Einstein’s friends, followers and relatives to seek out and destroy every document with Lieserl’s name on it. Why?’ As Time Magazine’s
Frederic Golden has stated: “Lieserl’s fate shadows the Einstein legend like some unsolved equation.” London-born author Tim Symonds grew up in Somerset, Dorset and Guernsey before living and working in southern and eastern Africa, Germany and the US. This latest book of Symonds’ was written in a converted oast house in East Sussex.

Super broccolini BROCCOLINI, a cross between broccoli and Chinese kale, is this week’s super food. Known in Spain as ‘bimi,’ this green vegetable is often confused with baby broccoli due to its small florets and thinner stalks. But the truth is the hybrid might be healthier than the original vegetable.
www.euroweeklynews.com
Studies say broccolini florets have a higher content in dietary fibre, proteins and minerals than regular broccoli. Specifically, they have more calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc, minerals which are of great dietary importance. Broccolini also has more glucosinolates, a natural
class of organic compounds that act as anti-cancer agents. In fact, a study suggests broccolini can be used in novel anti-cancer therapeutic strategies due to its inhibitory effect on human colon cancer cells. Broccolini strengths are also found in the kitchen. Cooking it is simple, since the whole thing can be eaten after washing it. It can be sauteed in olive oil and garlic, steamed or even battered and deepfried as Japanese tempura. The green vegetable was originally developed in 1993 in Japan, and was sold for the first time the following year with the name ‘asparation.’
FOOD & DRINK
Classical influence on wine A NEW research will appeal to those who appreciate both fine wine and classical music, as results indicate a link between the two. Fine wines were tested by a group of participants with and without classical music being played, to discover whether the multi sensory perception of taste and hearing affected the flavour of the drink. The results, published in the Flavour journal, suggest that wine writers may be justified in comparing wines to pieces of music or a musical style. It appears listening to classical music can enhance the experience of wine drinking. When participants tested the wine with music, they enjoyed the experience more than tasting it in silence.

Cool winter garden projects HOPEFULLY your winter cutback and clean-up is complete so there is now time to develop one or two new attractive features ready for next summer. Which of the following would appeal to you? • A rockery making use of the natural slope or terracing of the garden. • A water garden

perhaps cascading through the rockery or just a standalone pond or fountain.
• A Jacuzzi as an alternative or in addition to a pool. • Permanent facilities for al fresco cooking. Perhaps a barbecue, an oven or a fully equipped Spanish style outside kitchen with space for cooking paellas and with a wood-fired oven. • An aviary for breeding tropical birds or a henhouse for organic eggs. • A formal herb garden planted up with culinary and medicinal herbs. • Topiary features by trimming and training the top of a hedge or individual specimen trees. • Additional fruit trees to source ecological produce. • The making or purchase and installation of
bird boxes, feeding tables and baths. • A terrace and seat facing the best views. Such possibilities are discussed in Chapter Three of ‘Your Garden in Spain practical ideas for gardens that match your Spanish lifestyle.’ Other alternatives are: • A patio garden or an attractive iron or wooden gazebo. • Raised beds for growing fresh vegetables. • A greenhouse to make it easier to raise new plants from seeds and cuttings. Decide what will give you most pleasure this summer. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com February 2014.

Alegria Real Estate is beating the crisis and connecting sellers with buyers ALEGRIA REAL ESTATE in Torrevieja was first formed nearly five years ago and has grown and grown. Offering an honest and transparent service, they have over 500 properties
on their books and a team of staff speaking a range of languages, including Russian, to deal with the average 30 Russianspeaking clients that come each month looking for a
home in the sun. They have even found homes for members of the Russian national soccer team and popular author Ian Kharitonov. “Ninety per cent of our clients are Russian speakers,” explains Ray Schmitz. “We average a minimum of five sales a week.” Property is selling, but Ray explains that it has to be at the right price, which they believe to be around €1,000 per square metre for a good quality property. “We need realistically priced pro-
perties. People are well informed about what is available on the market and they know what they can get for their budget.” It is a buyer’s market but Alegria’s team of real estate professionals and legal advisers can help everyone in every situation. For buyers, there is the assurance that the property has been checked to ensure there are no problems or outstanding debts. For sellers, they can be assured their property will be internationally marketed in five languages,

Have you been caught out by the ‘big UK TV switch-off’?
PETE MOLLOY from AA Free English TV attempts to explain the current situation to Euro Weekly News’s readers: “The new Astra satellite has now arrived at its position of 28.228.5 degrees and it’s replacing the old satellite. The reason for this is twofold: it was starting to run out of
capacity, hence the new one would be able to do a lot more things that the old one could not do, enabling the new one to cope with all the new high definition (HD) channels being sent out now on free to air and sky channels. “The other job it was set up to do was to stop broadcasting BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 over the rest of Europe, including to us here on the Costa Blanca, and the Costa del Sol, requiring 2.4m dishes and above.” Pete said: “As of February 11, BBC, Channel 4 and ITV will no longer work on 1m dishes. I can tell you that on my roof in La Florida I can get some BBC, ITV and Channel 4+1 on a 1.1m with a quality
LNB and a high definition receiver. That’s the good news; the bad news is that it is unstable, dropping out at various times during the day. It is the common opinion within the trade that we need to install at least a 1.4m going forward in our area for maximum signal reception or even a 1.8/9m if you possibly can. We appreciate that not all properties can take such large dishes. “We have been testing all over last weekend various dishes plus various LNBs and receivers to see which ones will give us an optimum signal. “Going forward, although a 1.1m can do a job, it really is hit and miss at various times during the day on various channels and
is not recommended for fulltime use. “We strongly recommend installing at least a 1.4m as we know the channels at this moment in time are far more stable on this size dish. New 1.4m set up complete is from only €295, a new upgrade from a 1m or 1.1m is only €225 including all new parts.” AA Free English TV has been
established for over 12 years and will attend to you within two working days if there are any problems. To realign your dish it is only a €25 call-out charge. They can supply any size dishes and are experts in repairing poor community installations both English and Spanish.

THE concept of dog parks seems to be becoming more and more popular. Whilst for local councils it may seem an attractive proposal, there are problems with the idea. Disadvantages: • For people - Potential danger from aggressive dogs - Potential danger of physical injury from dog-related hazards - Potential ‘denouncias’ arising from dog fights - Potential parasites

SIXTEEN countries competed in four groups of four with each team playing each other once. And this was the first time that four from the UK were involved while at the same time, Pele was in action and goal average was used to separate teams in groups. The groups were: (1) Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Northern Ireland, West Germany; (2) France, Paraguay, Scotland, Yugoslavia; (3) Hungary, Mexico, Sweden, Wales; (4) Austria, Brazil, England, Russia. Unfortunately, England, weakened by the loss of key Manchester United players killed in the Munich air crash and with the late Tom Finney in their line-up, were dumped out by Russia (in a play-off) while the Scots
finished bottom of their group. Eight countries made it into the quarter-finals, the ties ending Brazil 1 Wales 0, France 4 Northern Ireland 0, Russia 0 Sweden 2 and defending champions West Germany 1 Yugoslavia 0. In the semi-finals Pele’s treble inspired Brazil to a crushing 5-2 win over France and the host nation Sweden beat the Germans 3-1. The final, played in Solnan before 50,000 fans, saw Brazil at their brilliant best. Two-goal Pele was again in top form as they beat the Swedes 5-2 to win the trophy for the first time. France whipped West Germany 6-3 to claim third spot. Facts: • Pele became the
youngest player to score in a World Cup final and the youngest to gain a winner’s medal. • The final produced the highest number of goals scored by a winning team (5), the highest number of total goals scored (7). • Just Fontaine, France, netted 13 goals in the tournament, a record that still stands.
Next week: The 1962 Tournament in Chile.

UDI’S S1, the car that would see the brand dominating the World Rally Championship, is back as a road-going version. The German manufacturer presented the S1 and the S1 Sportback, the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line. The 2.0 TFSI engine fitted with a turbocharger develops 170kW and produces up to 370Nm of torque. The two-litre engine accelerates the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback from 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively. The top speed is 250km/h. On average the TFSI consumes just 7.0 or 7.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The S1 and the S1 Sportback, expected to be available in the second quarter of the year from €29,950, come with Audi’s Quattro permanent all-wheel drive onboard. The suspension on the two compact sport models has been revamped. The electromechanical power steering has been developed.

Audi S1, a great name makes a comeback with two models
AUDI S1: The iconic car is back as a road-going version.
Modified pivot bearings on the front axle enhance turning. At the rear a four-link design replaces the compound link rear suspension used on the A1 models. A larger brake master cylinder as well as large brake discs improve deceleration.
COCKPIT: Finished in dark tones with black dominating.
The two sporty compact models are supplied ex-factory with 17-inch wheels with 215/40 R17 tyres; Audi offers 18-inch wheels with 225/35 R18 tyres as an option. Their xenon plus headlights are all-new while the LED rear lights come with new,
horizontally structured graphics. Four new exterior colours supplement the available paint finishes. The interior of the two compact sport models is finished in dark tones; black dominates, including on the air
Nissan LEAF best-selling EV in 2013 NISSAN’S LEAF model was the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Europe in 2013. The Japanese manufacturer’s EV model sold 5,600 units more compared to 2012. This has made it command 33 per cent of the EV passenger car market on the continent, according to Nissan. The next EV best-seller in Europe is Renault’s Zoe, with 8,858 units sold, according to a report by website evobsession.com. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ended up third with 8,840 units sold.
Sales of this model surged in the last month of 2013, allowing it to reach third position as reported by evobsession.com. The success of the Nissan LEAF in Europe has been propelled by consistently strong sales in Norway where the Nissan LEAF was the third-most sold passenger car last year. It also became the country’s best-selling car at the end of January 2014 with 650 units. The rest of Europe isn’t far behind. In 2013, the Nissan LEAF Don’t take a chance! was the EV market leader Don’t break the law! in many other countries Take the hassle out of including Spain, Italy, re-registering your vehicle onto Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Spanish plates Belgium, and the United We endeavour to better any Kingdom, Nissan claims. genuine quotation

Record-breaking goals Last Saturday, Lionel Messi scored his 336th and 337th goals for leaders Barcelona in a 6-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. This breaks the record for most goals scored for a Spanish club, which was held by Bilbao’s Telmo Zarra, who netted 335 between 1940 and 1956. TO READ MORE VISIT OUR WEBSITE: WWW.EUROWEEKLYNEWS.COM

Orihuela edge out Torry
TORREVIEJA entertained Orihuela in an eagerly awaited local derby at the Vicente Garcia. A crowd of over 700 turned up for the game including a sizeable following from Orihuela. The first half was evenly contested with both defences coming out on top and neither keeper really being troubled. The nearest Torry came to scoring was from a shot from the edge of the box by Dani Lucas, which was destined for the bottom corner of the net until it was blocked by an Orihuela defender. Orihuela started the second half more forcibly and started to dominate possession and took the game to Torry. They achieved the breakthrough after 58 minutes when a long ball forward evaded Alexis and Burguillos in the Torry central defence with keeper Carrion staying on his line and the Orihuela No. 9 Pinera nipped in and beat Carrion with a clinical finish. It was a tense affair which Orihuela just about deserved to win on the day.
Good score for top team LEVANTE members played an accumulator which requires teams to mark down the best two Stableford scores on par 5s, the best three scores on par 4s and all scores on par 3s.
And with a total of 108 points representing a level par score, the team of Malcolm Nash, Alan Turpin, Neville Allen and Malcolm Neill, who came in with 113 points, proved worthy winners.
The 111 points scored by Andrew Harrison, Roy Molyneux, Alan Overton and Dick had to settle for runners-up spot but, for Alan, there was the memorable, consolation of scoring an eagle 2.
Scrapping hard for a win

EQUALLY MATCHED: Racing and Montesinos.
Well-earned point THIS week Racing Playas de Orihuela entertained local neighbours Montesinos, looking to improve from the earlier 2-1 defeat at Montesinos. The teams were equally matched with both defences having to be alert. The breakthrough came for Racing when Nico Garcia played a sublime pass to Sam Broadway who still had a lot to do but he outwitted two defenders and the goalkeeper to pass the ball into the net to give Racing a 1-0 lead. Racing brought on young Cadete Fabio Annibal for injured Farid Boulkab and Fabio linked
up well with Garcia up front, but the game changed within 10 minutes due to Racing’s Carlos Valderrama picking up a second yellow for a late tackle and leaving Racing with their backs against the wall. Montesinos took full advantage and put Racing on the back foot. Three minutes left and a killer blow for Racing when Montesinos got an equaliser to level the tie to 1-1. Final score and a point apiece but with many positives for Racing with a great performace with 10 players and two Cadetes making their home debuts.
LOS SQUALOS travelled to the University Stadium, Murcia, to face local rivals Murcia XV (B) anticipating a hard-fought game. Squalos lost two key players early on to injury, Jorge the Captain at fly-half and Alejandro inside-centre. The first 20 minutes were scrappy with neither side wanting to make errors. Squalos forwards worked hard to create platforms for the speedy three-quarters and this paid dividends when winger Christian opened the scoring with a try in the corner. The extras were added by Torri. Shortly after full-back Daniel joined the line to create an overlap and score a second try. A third try was added by outside centre Juanma before half-time leaving Squalos with a comfortable lead of 17-0 at the interval. The second half was again punishing with both sides battering away at each other. On the 60minute mark, Squalos scored their fourth try when big prop OSO (The Bear) crashed through several Murcia defenders at close range to score under the posts. A simple conversion followed by Jose the scrum-half giving Squalos a valuable offensive bonus point. Murcia never gave up and were rewarded late on with a try by their big No. 8. A hard-won victory which leaves The Sharks top of Division 2 having won 7 out of 7 games.
