Tourists need better airport service by Ray Chadwick REPRESENTATIVES of a number of tourist organisations on the Costa Blanca have demanded the provincial government of Alicante improve the current transport situation at Alicante-Elche Airport.
They are asking for more overnight connecting transport links as more passengers are waiting longer and longer for taxis and non-existent bus services. The major concern is the bad first impression given to tourists as they arrive in the area. Some arrivals landing after midnight have been forced to wait for up to an hour for a taxi with no other forms of transport available. Toni Mayor, president of hotel management group HOSBEC, said: “A tourist shouldn’t need to wait more than
ten minutes for a taxi at the airport,” although he did accept that the majority of people that do arrive in the early hours of the morning do have someone waiting for them. He suggested that airlines could establish a line of communication with the taxis to ensure that more are available at certain times to coincide with the schedules. The president of tourist organisation APTUR went one step further in his comments: “It is not welcome that tourists arrive and have no transportation options. While the terminal is open and until the last passenger has left, there should be alternatives.” Tourism Minister in Alicante, Eduardo Dolón – the previous mayor of Torrevieja – said that while airport traffic has continued to grow in recent years, “services haven’t improved at a similar rate.”

Nobody knows about the Volvo Ocean Race by Steve Collins IN LESS than two months, the Volvo Ocean Race 2017 is in Alicante and questions are being asked why nobody seems to know about it. A spokesman for the opposition Partido Popular (PP) in Alicante said that there appears to be “no interest” in promoting the event that is taking place in the city from October 11 to 22. It’s particularly frustrating as it’s in the middle of the tourist season and there are neither signs nor posters to be seen so as to encourage their return. Luis Barcala said: “Back last year, we proposed the setting up of a commission to plan a series of activities to promote the event with the aim of achiev-

ing the maximum economic impact for our city. Hotels and restaurants and local business would be able to benefit from the influx of people. Despite our proposals, there has been nothing.” Barcala compares the lack of apparent enthusiasm in promoting the event in Alicante to that shown in Portugal’s capital Lisbon that will be hosting the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race after Spain.

A critic of Turkey’s government, arrested in Spain at Turkey’s request, has been granted conditional release. German-Turkish writer Dogan Akhanli has written extensively about human rights in Turkey. He usually lives in Germany, where his arrest is seen as politically motivated and Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticised Turkey over the case. Mr Akhanli was detained last Saturday in the city of Granada, where he was reportedly on holiday. The arrest was carried out on an Interpol ‘red notice’ - a request to arrest a wanted individual for extradition. The request is made by national police forces, and it does not indicate the person is wanted by Interpol itself.

Airport thieves in disguise OFFICERS FROM the National Police have arrested a man for thefts from passengers passing through the Alicante-Elche Airport. The detained man - a 36-year old French national - disguised himself as an employee of the airport and used false documentation as he managed to steal various objects of value from people using the airport. The alarm was raised when a number of thefts had been reported in the airport buildings and as a result, hours of recordings from security cameras close to where the alleged thefts took place were looked at. Investigations pointed to the same person dressed in a reflective vest and posing as a worker in the car park offering to help travellers with their luggage. As he gained their trust, he took advantage of the naivety of his victims and took various items without them being aware. Once a series of images of the suspect were obtained, a search began and a man was quickly arrested. He was subsequently identified by previous victims.

Checkpoint fugitive still on the run POLICE ARE still looking for a man on the run who was involved in what some witnesses thought at first was a terrorist incident unfolding. The wanted man refused to stop at a routine police checkpoint in Rojales which launched a car chase that ended up in Pilar de la Horadada. The fugitive’s car – since confirmed to be driving on false number plates - ended up crashing into a wall in Torre de la Horadada after being shot at by officers as he passed by a roundabout in Mil Palmeras. Three shots were fired – two of which hit the car – but he continued with police vehicles in pursuit. After the crash, the man fled on foot sporting a bloody face from injuries sustained in the crash and is believed to be hiding in the vicinity. Several neighbours witnessed the events unfolding and posted it on social media when then caused alarm that a serious situation was taking place. Dressed in bullet-proof vests and carrying machine guns, a detailed search of the area has been taking place and at the time of going to press the wanted man has yet to be found. Police believe that this isn’t terrorist related and instead part of an organisation involved in drugs or burglaries. This has been backed up by the security councillor for Pilar de la Horadada, José Tomás Saura, who called for the local people to remain calm and stating that, “we are dealing with a common criminal and the police are working on arresting the suspect as soon as possible.”

SWIMMERS ENTERING the sea along a part of the beach at Los Arenales almost had a different kind of a sinking feeling. About four metres away from the shore, bathers discovered an opening of a pipe on the sea bed about half a metre in diameter which could’ve easily seen a small child falling into or an adult putting their leg down. Local police were called when it was discovered and a red warning buoy has been affixed to the exact spot to warn other bathers of its location. The pipe is believed to be part of the old drainage system of Los Arenales that has re-emerged as the sand has moved over the years.

A COMBINATION of the aftermath of the Las Ramblas attacks in Barcelona and the current numbers of available police officers have required a change in the route of La Vuelta de España cycling race. Torrevieja’a mayor, José Manuel Dolón, announced that after a meeting with police and security forces in the wake of the terrorist attacks, the numbers of officers available to cover the event as it passes through the municipality on Sunday were discussed. A total of 53 officers would be needed to effectively cover the route if it were to come through Torrevieja itself but only 23 are available for duty. The report from the Inspector of police said that this would mean the Guardia Civil would

Drainage system gets welcome grant by Ray Chadwick RESIDENTS OF Almoradí will shortly see the end of their reoccurring drainage problems.
A summer without sand
LOCALS AND tourists alike have been complaining about the state of one of Santa Pola’s beaches. The winter storms caused damage up and down the coast and Santa Pola didn’t escape; their coves at Santiago Bernabéu suffered the most and lost almost all their sand which left a very rocky landscape. This has made walking along the beach almost impossible when beachgoers have been accustomed to flat sand. Swimmers are also finding the experience an uncomfortable one as rocks have taken the place of safe footings with some of them hidden just below the surface. One annoyed tourist, who had been visiting the same area for the past 23 years said: “The beach is a disaster. The rocks are so slippery you’re frightened to walk over them and there’s now nowhere to put our towels.”
They have received a grant of €100,000 from the regional government in Alicante towards the repair and upgrading of the sewerage system linking Calle La Cruz and Calle Las Viñas in El Saladar. For some time, locals have been badly affected every time there is heavy rain as the old drains can-
not cope with the force of the water. Streets end up flooded and some properties have been known to suffer the consequences of blocked pipes. The grant and the schedule of work were announced by Almoradí councillor Rafael Meseguer.

BRAVE: Tasha aims to be at the match herself on Sunday.
by Lynne Whitaker In collaboration with San Fulgencio Town Hall there will be a Fun Football Match at Estado Nuevo Canaveral, San Fulgencio this Sunday August 27. Kick-Off 12.30pm. Tasha’s XI (a squad of around 30 local, volunteers, who have each donated €10 for the privilege of playing, and who have been encouraged to bring along as many supporters as possible) will be coached by former professional footballer Peter Nicholas who played for Arsenal and won 73 international caps for Wales. They will play a

Police and Public Services XI, organised by the Town Hall. The trophy for the winners on the day is an Official Copy of the F.A. Cup, which obviously cannot be retained by the winners, but for a €1 donation anyone can have their photo taken holding it alongside Peter Nicholas. Britain’s Got Talent entrant, Nikki G, will be performing before the kick-off and Big FM have agreed to attend to play the music and supply the public address system. On the day, the bar will be open and soft drinks will also be available at the ground. Entry to the game is by numbered programme, available at the gate and from the following premises in Urb. La Marina: The Angel Bar, The Hillside Bar & Social Club, Expat Solutions Services, and Twilight Bar. In addition, people can contact Tom Whitmore on 663159417 who can reserve programmes and arrange delivery and payment collection. Programmes cost €5 and include an entry into
the Star Prize Draw: a three-day, full-board trip for two to the Cuenca Region from October 1 to 3 this year, courtesy of David’s Coachtrips S.L. (See page 3), plus a grateful and anonymous donation of €100 spending cash, making a total value prize of €400. It is not necessary to attend the match in order to win. Simply leave your contact details with the person you bought your programme from and you will be contacted if you have the lucky number, which will be drawn by Tasha herself (subject to health) at half-time. The case of Tasha has been a prominent fund raising cause for some time now and has already attracted a fantastic response. Tasha, from Urb La Marina, has been diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disease which leads to other rare complications and conditions, and over the last two years her life has been devastated by these series of illnesses. She has gone from being the life and soul of the community, to fighting a personal life limiting battle. The disease has struck in such a devastating
way that she is currently paralysed from waist down, unable to breathe unaided and relies on a ventilator. She is unable to swallow, is fed through a tube and has been left blind in her left eye. Despite all her own medical problems, Tasha remains positive and upbeat about life and spends her time encouraging other people throughout the world to never give up with their own personal fight with chronic illness. Funds are being raised to be able to send Tasha to the USA for specialist treatment unavailable in Spain or the UK, and the ultimate target is €250,000 Tasha is originally from the UK and through no fault of her own, is currently not in receipt of any financial benefits from the UK or Spanish governments. Lottery joy for Alicante AREAS of Alicante have been celebrating their fortune after a lottery win of close to €5m was shared among the residents.
The number drawn as the first prize in Saturday’s Spanish National Lottery was 52490, and champagne corks were heard to pop across the city when the realisation dawned that a large number of local people had bought a share of that number and were about to be €60,000 to the good. Most of the winners were pensioners, average families and the unemployed spending a few euros chancing their luck. One winner said: “I am a chef and I became unemployed last month. My
husband has recently had a cancer operation and we have two small children. There was a time in our lives when everything was black. We can now see some light. We are so happy.” Another, who lives in Virgen del Remedio, said while looking at one of his children he was holding: “We are now able to move and use this money as a deposit for a house in Mutxamel and try to give our children a brighter future.” Others are planning to buy the house they’re renting, a new car, or share their good fortune with children and grandchildren. Not all are smiling however. Two brothers know they have two of the winning tickets but are unable to find four others which are worth €240,000.
City radar success
LOCAL POLICE in Cartagena have announced that it fined a total of 3,804 drivers during 2016. This was as a result of stopping 211,195 vehicles during the 12 month period with just under 2 per cent of those being fined for speed-
ing. Five of those stopped were also charged for reckless driving. The figures were announced as Cartagena continues with their current summer speed control campaign until this Sunday during which fines of between €100
and €600 can be given out. Councillor Francisco Aznar said that the current initiative aims to control speed throughout the urban areas of the city and to prevent any future fatalities caused by such driving. “We have no wish to mourn any of our citizens,” he said

Remembering Elvis & raising funds THE 16TH of August marked 40 years since the death of Elvis Presley. In memory of ‘The King’, a charity night was held at Quesada Fish & Chips Restaurant, in order to raise funds for The Samaritans in Spain. A total of 170 people attended, and thoroughly enjoyed Danny Fisher’s tribute to
Elvis. Once again, diners ‘dug deep in their pockets’ and the fantastic sum of 1,291€ was raised for the charity. Elvis would approve. The next charity night at Quesada Fish & Chips will be on Tuesday 19th September, when, the ever popular, Richie Alexander will be helping to
raise funds for the Children’s Care Home in Elche. Tickets at 10€ are available from the Restaurant; The Post Room Benijofar; The Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada. All charity events at this venue have been sold out well before the night, so early booking is recommended.

by Ray Chadwick Eleven cars were torched on three separate nights A 64-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator of five of the eleven fires that have burned out cars over recent weeks in parts of Torrevieja. She has also been accused of throwing corrosive materials over other cars. Her arrest comes the day after local residents had decided to begin overnight vigils to monitor the area, and it’s not known if the arrest is connected with their vigilance. A total of eleven cars have totally or partially destroyed in the Urbanisation Parquemar, Molino Blanco and Mar Azul during August and a further 12 cars have been
badly scratched or vandalised. The last two cars that were found in flames included a hire car rented out by a Russian family and a high-end car owned by a Swedish national who owns a house in the area. Earlier incidents have needed the intervention of local firefighters whose quick work prevented the flames spreading to trees, other vehicles, nearby homes and the Amanecer School close to where the cars were parked. Urbanisation Mar Azul have experienced the bulk of these car fires and all the signs based on statements from local residents point to all them being the work of a single pyromaniac. The Guardia Civil confirmed that they found remains of rags soaked in petrol in one of the partially destroyed cars.

How much? Concern about young people’s pay FIGURES based on data from the Spanish tax authorities have revealed the amount of money young people are earning. The study reveals that, on average, a young person between the ages of 18 and 25
earns €440 a month equating to €5,280 annually and lower than the average across Spain. Despite the fact that there have been many signs that the Spanish economy is improving – which has filtered through to the provinces – unemploy-
ment among the young up to 25-years-old is still 41 per cent, and when many do find work it is only part time. In the first quarter of 2017, 51.60% of the 104,066 temporary contracts issued in Alicante province for the under 30s were
for part-time work and mostly for four hours a day. Many of the contracts only lasted for seven days. In total, 113,228 contracts were signed for that age group of which only 9,172 were of permanent and indefinite.
Daily sea rescues continue
IN WHAT is fast becoming a daily occurrence another swimmer has been rescued from the sea off the coast of Guardamar. The latest incident concerned a 41-year-old non-Spanish national who suffered a cardiac arrest after being trapped in what was believed to be a rip tide. He was rescued by members of the Cruz Roja before being transferred to Torrevieja Hospital by the emergency response team from SAMU. It’s been a very busy week for the lifeguard services up and down the coast but in Guardamar in particular where in one day alone – the Red Day holiday – 47 people were rescued while the red warning flags were raised. With a few weeks of the busy summer season remaining, lifeguards continue to ask bathers to observe the warning flags.

Cat poisoning outbreak by Lynn Whittaker GUARDIA CIVIL officers on the Orihuela Costa are investigating the deaths of seven stray cats. They were all found in different parts of Calle Langosta with six of them already dead and another suffering a slow death. Police are looking at the possibility that they had been poisoned by a member of the local community expressing their anger at the amount of strays in the area.
It’s well known that one particular resident, who owns a number of cats herself, also feeds up to twenty other felines on a daily basis and she has been asked to stop as a way of not encouraging them to visit the neighbourhood. The local police have for some time been concerned as locals have regularly contacted the authorities about the build up of the visiting cat colony. Over recent weeks, they have arranged for the involvement of the local animal
protectorate to round up as many as possible to care for them or find them homes. Many residents have described the poisoning incident as “savage” but at the same time have warned the Orihuela council of their fear that this won’t be the last incident of this kind if nothing is done to stop it. Police investigations into crimes of animal abuse continue, but the case is being hampered by a lack of witnesses.

Firework robber not let off
OFFICERS from the National Police force in Elche have arrested a man for attempting to rob a firework supermarket. The 35-year-old Spanish national was accused of threatening the sales clerk of an outlet that sells fireworks with a pair of scissors. The arrested man was seen by witnesses to be hanging around the area for a few minutes until entering the establishment with his face covered by a bag. He then wielded the large pair of scissors and demanded the clerk had over the cash register.
The terrified victim had no choice but to hand over the till to the robber who left on foot running through the streets. When police arrived on the scene, the very detailed description of the thief was circulated to fellow officers and he was soon found in the locality. He was searched and found with a number of €20 and €5 notes that exactly matched what was in the cash register at the time of being stolen.
More record tourism figures announced KEEPING in line with the current trend across many parts of Spain, Murcia have announced record-breaking figures for tourism in 2016. Councillor Jesús Pacheco said that the 696,615 overnight stays in the municipality were “the best figures in our history.” He attributed
this success to the city benefitting from greater promotion and marketing to potential foreign markets as well as the upturn in internal tourists from areas such as Madrid, Valencia and Andalucia. During last year, 430,315 travellers were accommo-
dated in Murcia’s hotels showing a 20.5 per cent increase over 2015. The figures were announced at the same time that hotel bookings for this August had been the best in memory and is hoped to continue into September and during the annual fair.
Safari park sees some orangutan business THE POPULAR Rio Safari Park in Elche has taken part in the internationally celebrated World Orangutan Day.
Road widening tender announced
A TENDER has been issued for works on the doubling of one of the access roads to Alicante-Elche Airport. Central government in Madrid will be investing a total of €29.3m to improve 4.75kms of the road that links the N-332 to the A-70 motorway. Work will be carried out on the stretch of the N-338 that will see the lane from the N-332 doubled in width with the exception
of 800 metres that runs alongside the airport buildings due to the size of the buildings. This work has been demanded for years as Alicante-Elche airport remains one of the only major airports that still have single lane access and departure points. The planned works will see a total of eight new structures comprised four bridges, two flyovers and two underpasses.
The day was dedicated to giving out information and holding a series of talks to explain the vulnerability of the
creatures, made increasingly popular by the appearance of Clyde alongside Clint Eastwood in the film Every Which Way But Loose. Animal conservation experts believe that the orangutan is at a serious risk of extinction and the worst case scenario is that it could disappear within 10 years in its natural habitat on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Rio Safari is home to four of the endangered species as part of the European Endangered Programme in collaboration with other parks on the continent. The oldest Elche resident is Nakal, a 29-year-old adult male living with a family of gibbons on an island in the park complete with trees and ropes. On another area are Linga, Joy and Kay who arrived from Monkey World which is a primate rescue centre in England.

Dump the dumping plans ENVIRONMENTALIST organisation ANSE have complained to the authorities in Mar Menor about the dumping of beach greenery. They are particularly concerned about the amount of Posidonia – the most common seaweed found on the local beaches – that has been dumped inside the Sitio Ramsar Mar Menor after being taken away in trucks. ANSE said that it is “probably” the town hall of San Pedro de Pinatar that has been the main offender by depositing the weed in a protected area. ANSE also fears the practise of dumping the ever increasing amount of beach waste
onto the same area will remove even more public space from the Mar Menor and the Arenales de San Pedro. A further concern is that by taking away so much of the Posidonia weed and accompanying sand it’s hastening coastal erosion, and at the same time thrown on to vegetation land and salt marshes; thus affecting those areas in the process. ANSE have recently presented arguments against the reduction of 16 hectares of currently protected areas of the Mar Menor, which is exactly where the dumping has taken place.

Trendy old dude or mutton dressed as lamb?
by
Barry Duke
BACK IN 1993, author Stephen Fried, in his biography of supermodel Gia Carangi, coined the word “fashionista”. His wife loathed it, but the word quickly gained international currency and actually made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Well, this month I decided to invent a variation: fashionpensionista. It describes people of a certain age who, for better or worse – mainly worse – think they can dress as they did when The Kinks sang their “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” on their 1965 album, Kinkdom. The word came to mind when a fella – knocking on 80 I would guess – sat next to me at bus stop in Benidorm. He was a cerise horror show, dressed from head to toe in varying shades of pink. Even the straps of his watches – two on each wrist – had luminous pink straps. I blame the fashion retailers. They believe that if you’re not in the 18-30 age range you have two choices: either wriggle your way into their skimpy gear, or go trawling though charity shop or vintage store racks in search of clothing people died in five decades ago. Back in the day, there was none of this nonsense when I was living in London. You hit 50, and immediately became a customer at any number of outfitters catering exclusively to mature gentlemen. You swaggered into Burton or Dunn & Co looking like a middleaged Mick Jagger and emerged in a brown tweed outfit, looking (and acting) just like your dad. At a stroke, your broad mind and narrow hips changed places, and the outfits you now wore acted as
a kind of warning to upstarts that that you were Not a Man to be Messed With. You could get on a train, bus or the tube, and fearlessly order yobs to take their feet off the seats – and they’d meekly do so. But nowadays if a man of a certain age wearing skinny jeans and looking like a potato with cocktail stirrers for legs tried to exert authority over an antisocial teenager, he’d more than likely end up intensive care, taking his meals through a straw. Although society back then demanded that you look and act your age – meaning you had to wear your hair a certain length and buy shoes resembling Cornish pasties from Freeman, Hardy and Willis – many defied convention by keeping up with the latest trends without ever looking ridiculous.
Victor Pemberton R.I.P 13/08/2017
I was one of those rebels. It took some effort, mind, to retain the sort of boyish figure one needs for trendy gear, and I spent countless hours in a gym, from my 50 to mid-60s, to do just that. It clearly worked. A few years back I was standing outside Gatwick airport’s departure lounge puffing on a an e-fag when a young Frenchman approached me. “Are you in the movies, or maybe an artist?” he asked. Nope, I replied. Why do you ask?” His answer: “You’re one cool dude. I sure hope I look like you when I reach your age.” “As cool as Samuel L Jackson?” “Oh yeah, man, JUST as cool as Jackson”. About 18 months ago I had the pleasure of doing a photoshoot for a fellow fashionpensionista, a gay humanist and writer whose scriptwriting work included BBC radio plays and television scripts for the BBC and ITV – including Doctor Who, Fraggle Rock, The Slide and The Adventures of Black Beauty. Victor Pemberton, who had settled in Spain a few years back with his lifelong partner, David Spenser, came to public attention when he announced last year that he was about to drive solo from the Costa Blanca to the Arctic to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity for injured ex-service personnel. Although in his 80s, Victor looked far, FAR younger, and dressed and partied like a teenager … right until the beginning of August this year when he fell ill. He died in his sleep aged 85 on August 13. Farewell, Victor, you were certainly Benidorm’s coolest old dude, and we miss you terribly.

IT IS beyond belief that within 24-hours of the latest terrorist outrages, two in Spain, the Merkel regime warns Libya that they must not obstruct the flow of illegal migrants to the shores of the European Union. If Britain declared war on Hitler’s Germany in 1939 for taking liberties with border control why aren’t we bringing the current German regime to its knees? Perhaps Tommy Atkins and Antoine should again shoulder arms. Whilst still reeling with shock at the loss of life in Barcelona and a near similar recurrence in Cambrils, Germany’s Federal government issues a stark warning to the Libyan government to not hinder the flow of migrants to Europe. It is the practice of EU funded non-government organisations (NGO) to assist people smugglers by intercepting and towing their human cargoes to European ports. EU governments and George Soros assisted ‘charities’, instead of discouraging Africa’s economic migrants, many radicalised by Islamic teachings, help the migrants to complete their passage to Europe. The Libyan government, picking up the pieces of NATO’s regime changing fiasco, now want to establish control over their own territorial waters. This is a perfectly reasonable initiative. Libyan control means that non-Libyan vessels, such as those funded by the EU and George Soros, are no longer allowed to enter Libya’s territorial waters. The NATO deposed Muammar Gadhafi was particularly good at protecting Europe from the refugee tsunami. His navy intercepted migrants and returned them to Africa.

The enemy within
According to Die Welt, the move has infuriated the German government, which has yet to say what action they will take to occupy Libyan waters. Many migrants fleeing poverty use Libya to reach Europe choose the so-called central Mediterranean migration route. According to European border agency Frontex, the Libya – Europe route saw almost 100,000 illegal border crossings between January and July this year. Why is it difficult for so many people to connect the
refugee and terrorism crisis with American-inspired conflicts that have set the entire Middle East on fire? There is such a term known as ‘cause and effect’; it is high time that the 508 million misgoverned peoples of the European Union woke up the fact that the enemy is not in Moscow, Pyongyang or Beijing but is lurking malevolently in Washington DC, Berlin and Brussels. Germany, on this occasion, seems intent on driving the Arab scimitar and African panga deeper into Europa’s back. Is it Hitler’s revenge?

It’s all in the Name by
Colin Bird
I WAS watching Vintage TV recently and it featured music from the 60’s and 70’s as it often does on a Friday night, and I realised that although the Americans are really big in naming bands after actual locations in the US, the Brits have always gone out of their way to avoid it. I also realised how sad I am for watching Vintage TV every Friday. The Yanks have the likes of Chicago, Boston and even the grand, all encompassing title of America in the US lexicon of group names, not to mention: New York Dolls; Kansas; Ohio Players and Detroit Spinners amongst others. I suppose it’s understandable when you look at the names of British towns and cities. Somehow Bournemouth, South Shields and Ramsbottom don’t seem to lend themselves to the naming of an alcohol, drug and sex fuelled
band from the rock and roll netherworld. You just might get away with Pratts Bottom if you are a heavy metal outfit, but it’s borderline. There was only one English band of any consequence I can recall that stuck its head above the parapet and gave itself a place name, although I have to say, ASIA is a bit of a cop out when you have to go to the other side of the world for inspiration. Sure we have had Portishead (a place near Bristol) who enjoyed a degree of success. But they were from the 90’s, so don’t really count. And can you believe The Leyton Buzzards who had one minor hit in the 70’s with ‘Saturday Night’. Remember it? No me neither. Scotland is the home of Glasgow based band Texas, which to the best of my knowledge is not an area in that city. Still, The Gorbals or Pollokshields would have perhaps sounded a tad uncool, so good luck to them I say. In recent times the Yanks have even
had the gall to form a band called Halifax. Halifax! And they are not even from the other Halifax in Canada let alone Yorkshire, but from Thousand Oaks, California for goodness sake. How did we let that one slip through our fingers? English groups took the pop world by storm dur ing those heady 60’s days, but I can’t help wondering if things might have been different if instead of The Rolling Stones, Beatles and Kinks, the names of Dartford Tunnel, The Wavertree Four and Muswell Hill had been adopted.

Understand the Spanish beat
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by
Jane Cronin
NO DOUBT you have rushed to this page this week in your anxiety to find out the answer to last week’s question – is the word “agua” masculine or feminine? First let’s look at the evidence. The word ends in the letter “a” which makes it look feminine; also when we talk about cold water, for example we say “agua fría” which obviously suggests it is a feminine word. However, for “the water” we say “el agua”, using the masculine form “el” for “the”. This is very strange, and here are some other words that do the same thing. The word for “eagle” is “águila” which is the same for a male or female of the species. The word seems to be feminine, confirmed by the fact that the plural is “las águilas”. And yet the singular, strangely is “el águila”. “El ama”, is another example of the same thing. We have “el ama de casa” the housewife, or “el ama de llaves” the housekeeper. Both of these jobs are associated with females, but this is not the point. “Ama” is a feminine word, using the masculine “el” for “the”. A further example is the word “hacha” meaning “axe”. The sharp axe is “el hacha afilada”. Another word that behaves in the same way is “el hambre” (hunger). Here we do not have an “a” ending to make us think it is feminine,
but if you are very hungry you say “tengo mucha hambre”. And finally “el alma” the soul: “El Alma Herida” (the Injured Soul) is apparently the title of a very bad Mexican soap opera. Google is a wonderful thing. Before I unravel this great mystery, I will just mention that these particular feminine words also take “un” instead of “una” for “a” or “one”, so one housewife is “un ama de casa”. A context for this might be “there was one housewife and two nurses in the class” “había un ama de casa y dos enfermeras en la clase”. (Don’t forget though, that when you describe someone’s job using “ser” you don’t translate “a”: “soy ama de casa” - I am a housewife). To understand the reason for this strange phenomenon our first guess would probably be that it is because the words start with the letter “a” (agua, ama, alma, águila) or the sound “a” (hambre, hacha). However, this explanation doesn’t work as there are many words starting with “a” which do not behave in this way – “la actriz” (the actress), “la apertura” (the opening), “la hamaca” (hammock). Well, my friends, I will try your patience no longer, here is the answer. It is all to do with the “beat” or emphasis of the voice when speaking these words. In all of our key words the beat falls on the initial “a” sound (Ama, as opposed to hamAca). The issue of beat or stress and how words link together in speech is complex, but in this particular instance there is a fixed substitution of “la” for “el” in both spoken and written forms. You may think that this is not the most important or practical thing you have ever learnt about Spanish, and in one sense you may be right, but actually, we have just looked at one of the single most important things to understand about the Spanish language, and that is that where the “beat” falls in a word is of maximum importance in making yourselves understood.

Party time in Benidorm By Andy Mansell
Europe’s fastest growing gay pride takes to the streets of Benidorm in less than two weeks time. The organising team behind Benidorm Pride have pulled out all the stops to ensure this year’s event will be bigger, brighter and more spectacular than ever.

E BENIDORM PRID
The fabulous line up of themed parties, feature a host of top local and international singers, drag artists, dancers, DJ’s and go go’s to entertain the hordes of enthusiastic, fun loving revellers. This will be the seventh Benidorm Pride, which, through the years, has grown to become one of the most popular fiesta’s on the town’s calendar, drawing huge crowds of all ages and nationalities. Rainbow flags will flutter proudly from venues throughout the picturesque, narrow streets of Benidorm’s old town and beach front, with many holding their own parties and themed nights throughout the week. The official festivities kick off on Wednesday September 6, with the opening Showtime party held in the visually spectacular surroundings of the Mirador del Castillo viewpoint, close to the old town church, featuring the best of the unmissable local talent Benidorm has to offer. Once again, co organiser and presenter
Sammy Kruz will be joined by the glamorous, multilingual Roxie Corazon to host all of the parties in their own inimitable fashion. Thursday’s White Party and Friday’s Black Party take place in the same location with international Dj’s and live pa’s. Entry to each of these two top class events is 12 euros, including a drink and tickets are already selling fast. Many people’s highlight of the whole week is the spectacular gay pride parade, which begins at 5pm on Saturday September 9. Starting at the Rincon de Loix end of Levante beach, the decorated floats and walkers wearing bright colourful clothing, meander along the beachfront, cheered on by passers by, before finishing at the Auditorio Julio Inglesias, in Parc L’Aiguera. Pride organiser Geoff Gartland, who along with partner Santos Morales and Sammy Kruz, has been instrumental in it’s increasing success, is keen to stress the inclusivity of the event.
Kluster Party Saturday 9th
“ The parade is a perfect evening out that all of the family can enjoy and take part in.” He said. “ Kids love the outrageous costumes and make up, while mums and dads enjoy the fun and music on offer, so everyone should get there early to ensure a good view.” Saturday evening continues in the large terraced auditorium, with an early evening T Dance at 7pm, followed by a sensational tribute to the stars show at 8.30pm. For the Sunday closing night of what has the distinction of being Europe’ s closing summer pride party, the action moves to the Levant’s beachfront on the KM disco corner. The Super Man party run by top club night Supermartxe, features a set by Dj Dario Nunez, who has given up his residency at Pacha Ibiza for the night, especially to appear at the event which is not to be missed. Are you putting enough into your pension? THE 13TH annual Scottish Widows Retirement Report reveals that, despite the success of auto-enrolment – 80 per cent of 22-29 year olds are paying something into a pension – 70 per cent of them are not putting away enough. This puts at risk their ability to achieve their desired income of just over £23,000 a year for a comfortable retirement.
The report found that average contributions are £184 a month (including employer contributions), meaning they can expect an annual pension of just £15,200 including the current State Pension. A 30-year-old contributing the current minimum of 1 per cent to their workplace pension (matched by their employer) will achieve an income in retirement of £9,734. And even when the minimum contributions rise to 8 per cent (employee and employer combined) in 2019, they will only achieve an annual retirement income of £14,047. This is a shortfall of almost £9,000 on expectations. There is also evidence that more people will begin to opt out of pension schemes as contributions increase through autoescalation from April 2018. When 22-29 year olds were asked if the planned increases would affect how they save, less than half (48 per cent) committed to staying enrolled.
The later you start the harder it gets. If someone starts saving into a pension at 25 years of age, they would need to put aside £293 each month to reach a £23,000 annual income. Not starting to save until 35, monthly savings would need to jump to £443 and at 45 this would be £724. For someone who left retirement saving to their 50s, they would need to put away £1,445 a month to enjoy a £23,000 annual pension. Catherine Stewart, Retirement Expert at Scottish Widows, said: “There is no doubt auto enrolment has been a success in kick-starting the savings habit for millions – but it is not a silver bullet. Auto-enrolment may well be lulling people into a false sense of security that they are putting away enough for a comfortable retirement. “For many, that is simply not the case; particularly given retirement is looking more expensive than ever. With one in every 12 private rental sector tenants now a pensioner,
First-time buyers on the rise ON A non-seasonally adjusted basis, UK Finance data shows that mortgage lending in June rose, First-time buyers borrowed £5.9bn, up 26 per cent on the previous month and 9 per cent on June 2016. This equated to 36,000 loans, up 22 per cent month-on-month and 6 per cent year-on-year. Those that moved home borrowed £7.8bn, up 26 per cent on May and 15 per cent year-on-year. This equated to 36,500 loans, up 24 per cent month-on-month and 9 per cent compared to a year ago. Paul Smee, Head of Mortgages at UK Finance, commented: “June’s figures show a busy month in the mortgage market, with home movers having their highest monthly activity levels for over a year and
an especially high number of loans for first time buyers. Buy-to-let activity remains subdued compared to its 2015 peak but consistent month-to-month since stamp duty changes in April 2016. “But there are also signs of a softening market and we are not anticipating that this performance will be sustained in the second half of 2017. A slightly lop-sided market could well show some growth in house purchase lending but alongside reduced remortgage and buy-to-let activity.” Affordability metrics for first-time buyers saw the typical loan size increase from £137,000 in May to £139,000 in June. The average household income increased to £41,000 from £40,500. The average amount borrowed by home movers in the UK increased to £180,000 from £177,000 the previous month, while the average home mover household income increased month-on-month from £54,900 to £55,200. Buy-to-let activity was driven by remortgage lending which accounted for over two thirds of total lending. Buy-to-let house purchase and remortgage activity in June remained consistent to monthly levels seen since the change on stamp duty on second properties introduced in April last year.
‘Generation Rent’ is headed for a more expensive retirement than previous generations.”
Arrears and repossessions down
THE NUMBER of mortgages in arrears of 2.5 per cent or more of the outstanding balance declined to 88,200 in the second quarter of this year, the lowest level since at least 1994 when this run of data began. The total was 5 per cent lower than in the first quarter (92,600) and amounted to 0.8 per cent of the more than 11 million mortgages outstanding in the UK.
The second quarter also saw a fall in the number of mortgages across all arrears bands, including those with the highest levels of arrears. In the same period, the number of mortgages with arrears of 10 per cent or more of the outstanding balance totalled 25,200, down 5 per cent from 26,500 in the preceding quarter. This brought a welcome end to a period of five successive quarters in which this figure had edged upwards from 23,400 in the first quarter of 2016. The number of properties taken into possession also declined in the second quarter from 1,900 to 1,800 (accounting for 0.02 per cent of all mortgages). The total was the same
as in the final quarter of last year, and is the lowest figure since quarterly data was first published in 2008. In line with a trend that has become established in recent data, the rate of buy-to-let arrears was lower than arrears in the owner-occupied sector, although the buy-to-let possession rate was higher. This is because lenders extend a high level of forbearance to owneroccupiers to help them overcome any period of financial difficulty and stay in their homes wherever possible. Commenting on the data, UK finance head of mortgages Paul Smee said: “These figures show that the overwhelming majority of borrowers are managing their mortgage payments successfully, and many of those who have experienced some difficulty in the past are able to recover their financial position. “Borrowers are being helped by low interest rates, but mortgage costs are certain to rise at some stage. It is important therefore for customers to plan ahead and consider how their finances would be affected in those circumstances.”

Take a dip in a saltwater pool Photo credit: wikipedia
It was supposed to be a community swimming pool, but many people stayed away because they couldn’t tolerate the biting, nose-curdling odour of chlorine. Others experienced breathing and skin problems. So a community centre in the USA, converted its 65,000-gallon chlorine pool into a saltwater pool. People who had stayed away are now coming back, getting exercise and therapy, while socialising with others. Across the country, traditional chlorine pools are being converted into saltwater pools, sometimes called saline pools.
3. A more environmentally friendly approach. Routine pool maintenance doesn’t involve the handling and storage of manufactured chlorine and lessens the need for other potentially hazardous chemicals. But how do they work? Saltwater pools use a generator to convert the salt into mild chlorine that keeps the pool free of harmful bacteria. This chlorine is added to the water at a constant rate, displacing the bad smell and burning irritation we normally associate with chlorine and maintaining the right amount. Once the chlorine sanitises the pool it converts back to salt. The process continues, over and over again, conserving the salt and keeping sanitiser levels balanced.
Swimmers noticed the difference right away after the switch, making their pool experience much more enjoyable. The new system also meant softer water without harsh chemicals that sometimes required a shower to wash off. Then advantages of a saltwater pool over that of a traditional chemical pool are: 1. Simplified, more convenient maintenance. Saltwater pool owners don’t have to buy, transport, store and handle hazardous chlorine chemicals. This saves time and money.
2. Water that’s gentle on skin, eyes, nose and hair. Saltwater pools have approximately onetenth the salinity of ocean water and about one-third the salinity of human tears, with no unpleasant chlorine smell.
NO MORE TEARS: A swimming pool worth its salt.
The other good news for homeowners is that pool salt is far cheaper than traditional chlorine. The initial construction and installation cost of an electrolytic converter is very small and easily made up in maintenance savings. Even converting an existing chlorine pool to saltwater pool can pay off quickly.
How to grow a pallet garden
Follow these instructions to get started: 1. Sand down any rough spots on your pallet. If the back of your pallet doesn’t have much support, find some scrap wood, roughly 3 to 4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick (or the thickness of the rest of your supports) and cut it down to the width of your pallet. Using two nails on each side, add supports so they are roughly even down the back of your pallet. 2. Double or triple up your landscaping fabric and begin the stapling fun. Staple fabric along the back, bottom and sides of the pallet, taking care at the corners to fold in the fabric so no soil will spill out.
3. Lay the pallet flat and pour potting soil through slats, pressing soil down firmly. Leave enough room to begin planting your succulents. 4. Begin planting, starting at the bottom of the pallet and ending at the top. Make sure soil is firmly packed in each layer as you move up. Add more soil as needed so that plants are tightly packed at the end. 5. Water your wall garden thoroughly and let it remain horizontal for 1 to 2 weeks to allow plants to take root. After 1 to 2 weeks, you can set it upright. Use your creativity to think of different pallet gardening ideas to try. You can start vegetable gardening with wooden pallets, create a fragrance garden or grow small succulents. Once you’ve started planting in wooden pallets in the garden, many other ideas will come to you. DIY pallet gardening is fun, and takes up very little room. Photo credit: architecturedesign.net
WITH so many people becoming more conscious of repurposing rather than impacting on landfill with unnecessary waste, gardening with wooden pallets has never been more popular. Moving from a creative idea to a garden trend, today, gardeners are using pallets for planting everything from herbs to succulents. We’ve all seen them, used wooden pallets leant up beside markets and shops, waiting to go to the Ecoparque. Then someone thought of bringing those wooden pallets into the garden and planting veggies, flowers or other plants between the bars. Gardening with wooden pallets is an easy and inexpensive way to create a vertical planting area when space is tight. If you are wondering how to grow a pallet garden, all you need is a roll of landscaping paper, sandpaper, a staple gun and staples, hammer and nails and some potting soil. And of course, your plants!

Spanish actress to play key role in new cuttingedge crime drama FAMOUS SPANISH actress, Myr Garrido, known for her roles in films such as Love and Other Misfortunes (2013), The Sonata of Silence (2016) and more recently Ikaro (2017) is making headlines in Hollywood. She has just been chosen to play a key supporting role in a new and cutting-edge TV series about crime and espionage called Smoking Gun written by award-winning British writer and producer Sutish Sharma, who previously worked for the BBC. The role played by Myr is that of a heroic and passionate character named Marie Adelmo, a secret agent working for the Spanish Intelligence services during the 80s; during a covert mission, she uncovers an alliance between the CIA and international drug traffickers.
The series, which is being co-produced by Wanda Halcyon Television, Memphis Writers, New Street Pictures, Un Nouveau Jour, FX International Network and Access Entertainment, follows the FBI’s fictional investigation into the murder of a civil rights activist in Los Angeles during the turbulent eighties. The case forces the protagonist, a world-weary FBI agent, to travel to Spain and Nicaragua eventually to the door of the Central Intelligence Agency and a connection to drug trafficking in Los Angeles through cartels working in Spain. “We are very excited about the ‘Smoking Gun’ series and hope to have production underway in October of 2017 and we are delighted to have Myr Garrido in this key female role. She reminds us of a young Meryl Streep,” said Pat Andrew, executive producer of Halcyon and former Aaron Spelling executive. The production will be shot in Spain, Los Angeles and Warner Brothers Studios.

MAGNETS 2017 – ‘Follow Me’
FOR the fourteenth year running, Steve and Irene-Maria Campbell have run MAGNETS, a Summer Holiday Club for children from four years and over at La Siesta Church, Calle Granados, opposite the Aquapark Flamingo in La Siesta Urbanisation. Photo credit: magnets
Founded in 2004 with only three sisters in attendance, the Club has grown over the years with well over 250 children having participated. Every year, the children take part in activities which reflects the name of the Club: Memory verses; Arts and crafts; Games; New people to meet; Eats; Talk on a Bible story; and Singing. With its summer 2017 season having just finished, Steve and Irene-Maria took some time to reflect: “The excitement on the children’s faces show how much they enjoy being at MAGNETS This summer’s theme was Follow Me, looking at the story of Peter the big fisherman and the children enjoyed songs, stories and craft sessions, even SMILES ALL decorating cards which were later delivered to ROUND: Steve residents at the local old people’s home. and Irene“‘We look forward to it every year and when you hear Maria were of one young lad saying to his grandmother, totally delighted to welcome the unprompted, ‘Granny, it’s now August and we can go summer 2017 to MAGNETS!’ you can understand why” said Steve. children

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 7 represents R and 25 represents Q, so fill in R every time the figure 7 appears and Q every time the figure 25 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny’s Mystical Postbag
Kenny, I find it hard to believe in things that I cannot see. All this spiritual stuff doesn’t come to me and I am prepared to believe it if I can see something! Brenda C. Hi Brenda. Catch 22 here! If you believe then you will see, if you don’t then you won’t. All gnostic religions demand on belief forms. You are free to believe or not to believe, but these religions are founded on your faith and old stories from the past. Those with continued faith in Spirit do start a form of communication that leaves them well and truly knowing that there is something there; and that the soul continues long after Earthly life! They may see, but also feel and hear too such messages sent constantly. We can’t always see what we have to believe in. I have never been to Russia, but I have to believe it is there, although I have never seen it!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Trust puts you best in a position of power, which you have to assume to make it all happen for you this astrological year. Bold statements need to come from the heart and the soul if what you truly do want is to become what you get!
Mars takes a step forward towards planet Kora this week, shedding some new light on an old niggle. One part of you is saying you have to let bygones be bygones; but you are angry about the way things have panned out, and what has happened as a result. This may be a time to spill the beans and clear your way ahead. Feel free to do so!
Duel entries of Venus and Mercury this week bring you a great inner satisfaction. Since you love to share and be generous, it is now that you should be catching up with friends and relatives; since you seem to have had a lot on your plate just lately. Send out that message that will bring all together and send out your true message of love!
Hold back and look before you leap this week because there is something to be said for erring on the side of caution right now. Somebody moved the goalposts, but it wasn’t you and it can’t be your job to apologise on behalf of someone else. With things at sixes and sevens this could be a time to sit things out until the coast is really clear!
One step forward and another one straight back? This week take decisive action because something truly does have to be nipped in the bud. Whilst blame can be apportioned to the Ceres occlusion with Saturn, there is more in what is going on than meets the eye right now. Under your stance both these planets can and will deliver!
A change of location this week also brings up the prospects of another project; and you need something to get your teeth into right now. Spontaneity is the keyword for you when the going gets tough and the tough get going! End this month with renewed purpose and start just as you wish to continue to set a grounding precedent.
Not everyone around you is supporting you right now, and though they may have their reasons, these are not the actions of a true friend. Jupiter sextiles with Saturn midweek and this delays things somewhat. Saturn is really going all out to protect you, whilst a wealth of blessings sent from Jupiter can’t get to you just yet. Hang in there!
Big changes are afoot right now! Expect an overdue payoff, due to you because you have stuck to your guns despite all that has been going on. This week sees you in a very sociable phase, but even there be unafraid to take a risk when something feels as right as it will do! Expand your World, because the best of times for you is now.
All that glitters is not gold, and you are about to find this out! Last week’s tryst with Uranus your planetary leader, and Venus, has left some unfinished business that only you can deal with. Look to your opposing sign of Leo to see things from a different angle, because for you, for now, the grass truly is greener on a vastly distant shore!
Crab like actions are poised to snap and to bite. Hiding your anger is not an option right now, and neither should you be ensconced in that protective shell either! Moon magic intervenes on your behalf, but since you do not like yourself when you are surrounded by negative energy, this may take a little time to show to good effect.
Plagued by a conscious, this week is about coming to terms, and you have done nothing wrong. Whilst a midweek deal pays off, you have also come to a stage whereby those that cross you are not worth worrying about. Mars actions with Kora to set a date for something in the near future that could greatly and positively impact on you
All this indecision is having a very negative effect on you, and you need to charge that positive energy to get the right results just now. Tuning into yourself you can reveal the absolute truth of what it is wanted right now; otherwise what you are approaching is an unfair compromise, and really only the very last resort for you.

The Habaneras Shopping Centre celebrates International Dog Day working in collaboration with the local Animal Protection Department and its manager, Ms Carmen Morate. To spread the word about the shelter and to encourage new families to adopt the animals housed there, the Habaneras Shopping Centre is working with Torrevieja City Council’s animal department, which protects cats and dogs, to organise these events. Among the activities organised for the big day there is a pro-adoption parade
that will take place in the shopping centre at about 11.30. There will also be a charitable ‘flea market’, the proceeds of which will go to the shelter. A stand will be available to provide potential new owners with all the information they need to formally adopt their new friends. Also, the Dog Study and Education Centre (Centro de Estudios y Educación Canina, AYOCAN), will be there to share all the experience and skills of their trainers, who will give tips and methods for training adopted dogs. The Asociación Animalista de Torrevieja also merits a special mention, as an organisation that collaborates with the Shelter every day. Its 50 volunteers will be accompanying the dogs during the parade.

Craft demonstrations, puppet shows, workshops and lots more in the craft fair in Aspe
EVERY YEAR the small town of Aspe holds a fair at the beginning of September. This year the Town Hall has decided to make it a real Craft Fair, with demonstarations of old crafts, workshops for children and lots of entertainment, from cabezudos (people walking in the street wearing gigantic papier mache heads) and music at the official opening, to puppet shows, stiltwalkers and, in the evenings, juggling with fire. The fair will be held in the lovely Plaza Mayor, on 2 and 3 September, in the shade of enormous trees and a setting of old buildings and beautifull arches. About 20 craftsmen and

A local potter and several lace makers will participate and Amata, the craft association organizing the market, will contribute demonstrations of weaving (on an Iberian loom!), book binding and making recycled paper, as well as some 20 stalls with a wide range of hand made goods for all tastes. Returning to normal after knee surgery MOST PATIENTS undergoing knee surgery want to know when they’ll be able to return to a pain-free, active lifestyle and do the things they once enjoyed before knee pain took over.
ADVICE: Consult your doctor before getting too active.
Three months after surgery, most people have completely recovered and are able to return to many activities that were too painful or difficult previously. Once you’ve been cleared by your doctor, the safest way to restart activity after knee surgery is to find activities that avoid placing unnecessary stress on the now-repaired or even replaced joint. Here are three activities to help you move safely after knee surgery: 1. Walk (don’t run!). Experts say walking outside your home three
HAVE YOU ever said no to a cherry? Probably not. This summertime treat is simply delicious. And if you’re looking for another reason to indulge, you’ll be pleased to know that cherries are surprisingly good for you. Heart and diabetes Heart disease and diabetes threaten the health of millions every year, and cherries can help. Research from Michigan State University found that 20 cherries provide 25 milligrams of anthocyanins, which reduce inflammation by shutting down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation. This helps protect the arteries from the damage that leads to heart disease. Further research shows that those same anthocyanins also help lower blood sugar levels in animals, leading scientists to speculate that a similar blood sugar lowering effect could occur in humans. Gout Cherries also have a low glycemic index, making them a good choice for people with diabetes. Foods with a high glycemic index cause blood glucose to soar and then quickly crash. In contrast, foods with a low index, like cherries, release glucose slowly and evenly, helping you maintain a steady blood sugar level — as well as leaving you feeling full longer and potentially helping you maintain a healthy weight. People suffering from gout, a form of arthritis characterized by severe pain, redness and tenderness in the joints can also be eased by cherries. Research from the Boston University School of Medicine showed that people who ate cherries had a 35 to 75 per cent lower chance of experiencing a gout attack. Sleep When you find yourself wide awake and restless, your melatonin levels might be low. Melatonin is the chemical that controls your body’s internal clock to regulate sleep and promote overall healthy sleep patterns. Studies show that cherries are a natural source of melatonin,
and researchers who have studied the melatonin content of cherries recommend eating them an hour before bedtime to help stabilise your sleep cycle.
2. Dance. While you should avoid high-impact moves like jumping or lifts, ballroom dancing and gentle modern dancing are great ways to use leg muscles, engage in aerobic activity and have fun! Just be sure to avoid abrupt movements or twists that could potentially put your knee out of alignment. 3. Swim. Once the wound has healed, many people choose swimming as their exercise of choice as it’s not a weight-bearing
activity and therefore reduces stress to the joints. If your knee is still a bit tender, opt for water aerobics or pool walking. Want to mix it up? You can feel safe doing many other recommended activities such as yoga, golf, bowls, aerobics or sailing. If you have experience prior to your surgery doing more intense activities, your doctor may give you the go-ahead to resume them. Whichever activity you choose, remember that rushing into activities before you’ve recovered sufficiently may put you at risk for complications, so be sure to check with your doctor first before resuming any activity after knee surgery. to five times each day is one of the best ways to regain your knee strength. While you may need to adjust the length of your step and speed, you will be able to spend more time walking for exercise once your muscle strength improves.

3 Tips for protecting your eyes this summer
1. PROTECT YOUR eyes from the sun - We can burn our eyes the same way we can burn our skin. Sunburn of the cornea (the eye’s surface), hugely increases the risk of bad eye health later on, as well as being rather painful. Staring directly into the sun light, even briefly, can permanently scar the retina, which is solely responsible for vision, and many of us do it without realising. Exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, eyelid skin cancer, pinguecula and pterygium.
ing Leading optical group Specsavers Opticas have offered the follow this summer. advice for keeping eyes healthy, protected and looking great
Wearing sunglasses and a hat is the best way to protect the eyes from the sun, however not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from damaging UV rays. To ensure adequate sun protection, choose sunglasses that meet industry standards and carry the ‘CE’ mark, which indicates these shades have met the necessary requirements for the European market.
2. Wear goggles – If you regularly swim in the pool, protect your eyes from the chlorine with goggles, as too much exposure to chlorine can irritate the eyes leaving them blurry and red. If your eyes are sore, try an eye rinse or saline eye drops from the chemist to relieve them.
Fight jet lag, fast!
3. Be careful of sand and small objects getting into your eye and follow the right steps to remove them - It is easy for sand or small objects to get into your eye when you’re enjoying swimming and spending time on the beach. If this happens take the following steps: • Try not to rub your eyes as this could scratch the cornea • Do not rinse your eyes with running water, the eye will water to flush out the object naturally
• If it is still painful and you think the object is still in
your eye, go to your nearest opticians who will try to locate and remove the object • If this does not help you, the Optometrist will refer you to the specialist in the nearest hospital, who will take out the object and prescribe you an ointment to heal any damage caused
You should seek professional advice if you are concerned about your eye health, or are in any discomfort and have regular eye tests. Specsavers Opticas are raising money for the ONCE Foundation for the Deaf and Blind until the end of the year and asking for a donation of just 1€ for a comprehensive eye test. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store and book your eye test.
MOST TRAVELLERS try to make the most of their time overseas, yet fail to consider the leap in time zones they make in a matter of hours. It can take your body’s internal clock several days to catch up to that leap and in the meantime, you’re likely to experience the disruption of your sleeping and waking cycle known as jet lag. Symptoms of jet lag include sleepiness during the day, insomnia at night, poor concentration, confusion, hunger at inappropriate times or lack of appetite and general malaise and irritability. Check out RTN’s top five tips to fight jet lag. 1. Adjust your internal clock. Several days (at least four) before departure, gradually shift your sleeping and eating times to coincide with those at your destination. Once you arrive, adopt the local time for your daily routine. 2. Opt for overnight flights. You’ll have dinner at a normal time and be much more likely to sleep than on an afternoon flight. Depending on the length of the flight and the number of time zones you cross, you’ll arrive at your destination in the morning or afternoon. 3. Curtail coffee. For 12 hours before - as well as during - your flight, avoid overeating and caffeine. Although caffeine can help keep you awake longer, it makes you wake up more often once you do fall asleep and so reduces total sleep time. 4. Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air—even if you don’t feel thirsty. 5. Avoid or limit alcohol inflight. Cabin air dehydrates passengers, and altitude changes can quicken the effects of alcohol. A cocktail may relax you, but it’s also apt to dry you out and even worsen symptoms of jet lag.

Marinated chicken kebabs
THESE SPICY kebabs are ideal on their own with a fresh salad or as part of a choice of barbecued meats. They are best prepared in advance and left to stand for at least an hour before cooking. • 350g skinless chicken meat, cut into cubes • 1 tbls tomato ketchup • A small piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated (or 1 tsp powdered ginger) • 1 tsp mild paprika • The grated rind and juice of an orange • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbls olive oil
1. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl then stir in the chicken pieces. Set aside for at least an hour. 2. Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers then grill or barbecue until the chicken is well browned on the outside and cooked through in the middle. Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes
Hake Fishcakes I remember fishcakes from my schooldays when they comprised 90 percent potato and 10 percent fish – if you were lucky. In recent years the posh fishcake has begun to appear on the menus of many a smart restaurant. I used hake in this version, but almost any flaky fish will do – fresh or frozen. The inclusion of a few extra ingredients gives the dish a spicy edge that really comes through in the taste. Try serving with a mixed salad. 250g hake fillets. 250ml fish stock (a cube will do) 650g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 2-3 spring onions, thinly sliced (or half a leek) ½ a small red chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced. 2 tbls olive oil. A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped. The grated rind and juice of a lemon. 1. Heat the stock in a large frying pan, then reduce to a simmer and poach the fish until just cooked (4-5 minutes). Set aside and allow to cool. 2. In a large pan, boil the potatoes in salted water until just cooked (10-12 minutes). 3. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small pan, add the spring onions and chilli and cook gently for 5 minutes. Allow to cool. 4. Strain the potatoes and mash them in the pan. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps. Stir in the olive oil,
spring onions and chilli together with the parsley, lemon rind and juice. 5. Remove any skin from the fish and break it into small chunks. Fold the fish pieces into the mashed potato taking care not to break them up. 6. Form the mixture into 4 round patties and set aside until ready to cook. (The easiest way is to use a little flour on your hands or to press the mixture into a round pastry cutter). Fry the fishcakes in a little oil over moderate heat for 7-8 minutes on each side until evenly brown. Serve immediately. Serves 2. Preparation time: 10 minutes
Tip If you are using bamboo skewers, soak them in water beforehand to stop them from burning on the barbecue. Don’t cram too many pieces of chicken on each skewer. Leave a little space between each piece and this will help them brown and cook evenly.

Bacon and Egg Salad with Oil and Balsamic Dressing For years I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France. The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing. 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips. 4 fresh eggs. Mixed salad leaves. Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the dressing 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil. 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.
1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned. 2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes. 3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad. 4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad. 5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.

Wayne to no longer ‘Roo’ England fans Wayne Rooney @WayneRooney Dreams can come true and playing for @England has been exactly that. Thanks to everyone involved it´s been amazing HE MADE his debut for England in 2003 and 119 appearances and a national record of 53 goals later, Wayne Rooney has closed the curtain on his international career by his own choice. He said in a statement: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that. "However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football. It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me. "Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out. "Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but
I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful. I will always remain a passionate England fan. "One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side. Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team. “One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan - or in any capacity."

Mick Schumacher is working his way through the junior motor racing series and is currently competing in European Formula Three after a debut in Formula Four.
