Rock and a hard place OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have rescued a 50-yearold man with the help of firefighters, who had become trapped in a canyon in Enix, Almeria. The alarm was raised on Sunday at 2.00pm when the area’s Communications Operations Centre received a notification of the stricken walker. After crossing several challenging and rocky routes, two Guardia Civil units and two firefighting teams found the man completely traumatised and in state of panic. Under the encouragement of the officers and with the practical assistance of the fire crews and their equipment, the man was eventually able

The terrain can be unforgiving, weather unpredictable, and there are no safety nets out in the wild. Given the lack of mobile phone coverage, rescue services suggest that canyoning groups should be at least three people strong. Appropriate waterproof clothing should be worn, along with sturdy footwear, a helmet, harness, ropes, thermal blanket and whistle. A signal code should also be established between members of the group to communicate in areas of intense noise eg waterfalls.

Migrant deaths ‘almost triple’ By Joe Gerrard THE number of people who died trying to reach Spain numbered 318 during the first half of 2018, almost three times the amount killed during the same period last year. About 27,600 migrants and refugees arrived in Spain between January and July. Around 23,800 of those came by sea and about 3,800 crossed the country’s borders by land, according to the latest United Nations (UN) figures. The UN said: “Crossing the Mediterranean has become even more lethal.” The total number of arrivals was almost 130 per cent higher than it was at the end of July 2017. About 12,100 people arrived in Spain during that time. A total of 113 of those died. The total number of arrivals in Spain between January and July was 700 off the total number of migrants who came to the country for the

year in 2017. Around 28,300 people arrived in the country during 2017. The most common origin country of those coming to Spain was Guinea. About 3,100 people came from the west African country. Around 2,600 came from Morocco, 2,200 from Mali, 1,200 from the Ivory Coast and around 1,000 from Syria. The UN’s High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said in its latest Dangerous

TOLL UP: A total of 318 died from January to June. Journeys report that the western Mediterranean route via Spain was now the main point of entry into Europe. Around 26,000 people were registered in Greece and 18,500 arrived in Italy from January to July. A total of 1,512 people died while trying to reach Europe across all three routes. A total of 1,095 died while trying to reach Italy and 99 died while attempting

to cross to Greece. The UNHCR said there was no conclusive evidence that the rise in those travelling through Morocco to Spain was caused by it being harder to travel to Italy via Libya. Arrival numbers in Italy have declined by some 81 per cent, according to data. The body added the total number of arrivals in Europe was lower than it had been in

the previous two years. European states had taken measures to reduce irregular migration but they had not made it easier for migrants to enter through legal pathways, the UNHCR said. The body’s report said migrants came to Europe for a variety of reasons including to flee war or persecution, to be with family members or for work and education.

JUMPING BACK: Borrell (inset) said Spain could possibly return to GMT.

Back in time SPAIN’S Foreign Minister and the European Union have both proposed altering the clocks of the country and the continent. Josep Borrell, the government’s top diplomat, said last week the country’s time could jump back one hour to be more in line with its geographic location. Former dictator Francisco Franco moved Spain into the Greenwich Mean Time plus one (GMT+1) zone in 1940. “Perhaps Spain should be in another time zone. Frankly I don’t know. Let’s give the European Parliament an opportunity to see if it is able to find a common denominator between countries that are in such different geographical situations,” Borrell said. The Foreign Minister’s comments come as the European Commission (EC), the European Union’s (EU) executive branch, said last week it was mulling ending daylight savings time. It follows a public poll which EC officials said showed there was overwhelming support for ending the practice of putting clocks forward in spring and turning them back in autumn. Around 4.6 million people from the EU’s 28 member

states took part in the online survey. Borrell said the proposals would have to be debated by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) before being signed off by the EC. “All countries would have to explain their point of view and to what extent this would favour or otherwise affect work-family balance, the adaptation of timetables to the hours of daylight and energy consumption,” the Foreign Minister said. Borrell said he suspected member states would differ on the proposals. He added he was indifferent because his schedules were “continuous” in winter and in summer. “MEPs will have to make a decision about a problem that affects the people’s lives, the economy and energy consumption,” the Foreign Minister said. Franco pulled Spain out of GMT+0, the time zone of Britain, Ireland and Portugal, as a gesture of goodwill to Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler in 1940. The move was taken in a bid to bring Europe’s fascist dictatorships more in line with one another. It meant Spain saw less light in the morning and more in the evening.

OUR VIEW A very British coup THE weekend in the UK is a good time for politicians of all colours to speak out on matters that they see as important. The Andrew Marr show is a perfect example of how politicians can use the media to promote their own causes and this past Sunday, former Minister for Brexit David Davis confirmed that having resigned over the Chequers Brexit proposal, he will vote against it when it reaches parliament. This seems to be one factor that unites many pro and anti Brexiteer MPs as well as the European Union with all sides becoming increasingly more committed to fight it. Boris Johnson in the meantime has been using his regular article in the Daily Telegraph to criticise the Prime Minister in what many in both media and politics see as his first real move in a campaign to see Mrs May deposed and replaced by himself. With a majority of just seven in the House of Commons it would not be beyond the realms of possibility for dissidents to vote against the Chequers proposals which would most likely ensure that Theresa May resigned. If Labour was not itself looking as if it is about to implode over the accusations of Anti-Semitism, it would be almost impossible to consider a Conservative ‘coup’ at this time, but in fact it may be that the Brexiteers would be happy to fight an election before March 2019 hoping that Johnson and his supporters would be elected. The words of President Kennedy come to mind (although perhaps not to some politicians) - ‘ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.’

NATIONAL POLICE officers have prevented the suicide of a child who was being sexually harassed through the Internet. An international operation between Spanish officers, US Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) and Guatemalan police has led to the arrest of two people who cyber-stalked dozens of young people around the world. The two arrested contacted the children via the Internet from Guatemala and, after gaining their trust, requested pornographic material about themselves. As time went by, the young people had to send more explicit images. HSI intercepted communications between a minor and a dangerous sexual harasser in which the victim from Cataluña told of his intention to commit suicide because of the pressure he was under. The US agents found that the alleged harasser lived in Guatemala and informed the Guatemalan authorities. Subsequently, National Police officers specialising in cybercrime received an urgent communication from the Prosecutor’s Office investigating crimes against minors in Guatemala.

Cyber-stalked child suicide prevented

SAVED: Police patrols traced suicide risk child. The victim who wanted to end his life resided in Spain and needed to be located urgently. A rapid investigation led to the victim’s identity being established in just a few hours. Police in the victim’s hometown launched a search for the child and quickly found him wandering the streets and thus prevented his suicide. The mother of the child told the officers that she had noticed abnormal behaviour in her son but did not know that the prob-

lem was so serious. Guatemalan police then raided the harasser’s home, but he and an accomplice escaped. A search revealed the duo had been harassing dozens of children around the world. Months later, the Catalan child was again sexually harassed through the Internet. Family vigilance prompted them to report the matter to police who forwarded the information to the Guatemalan police as the harassers were the same individu-

als who had earlier escaped. This time they were found, arrested and have since been jailed. Spanish National Police is teaching the Cyberexpert programme in schools, which aims to train children in the safe use of social networks and to raise their awareness of the risks they may encounter in the daily use of new technologies and the Internet. ‘Stolen babies’ trial resumes SPAIN’S first trial involving thousands of suspected cases of babies stolen from their mothers during the Franco era resumed earlier this week, decades after the scandal broke. Former gynaecologist at the San Ramon clinic, Eduardo Vela, 85, is accused of having in 1969 taken Ines Madrigal, now 49, from her biological mother and given her to another woman who raised the baby as her own.

During questioning in the opening session of the trial on June 26, Vela said he could not recall incidents of baby trafficking at the clinic which he ran for 20 years. Vela was due to return to the witness stand the following day but instead went to hospital after falling ill. He is expected to take the witness stand again when the high-profile trial resumes for a final session, though no date

for a verdict has been specified. Prosecutors are seeking an 11-year prison sentence for falsifying official documents, illegal adoption, unlawful detention and certifying a non-existent birth. Activists say hundreds of similar cases have failed to make it to court in Spain because of a lack of evidence or because the time limit to file charges has passed.

Balconing law call MAGALUF’S mayor has called for stronger action to be taken to stop the craze of balconing that has seen several people killed or seriously hurt. Alfonso Rodriguez Badal, the head of Calvia Council which is in charge of the resort town and Palma Nova, said he is shocked how there seems no end to tragedies as young holidaymakers suffer falls every year. This summer seems to have been particularly bad, he said, adding the council must act to stop young people ‘coming here to die.’ Balconing is a craze where people jump from balconies into swimming pools or from one balcony to another. Now Badal wants new legislation to try and stop young visitors taking dangerous risks in the name of fun. Not every fall from bal-

the craze, with Badal saying drugs and alcohol are at the heart of the problem. He said: “We must not al-

low those who come to have fun with us to find death in this absurd way.” Badal called for a curb to be put on ‘aggressive offers of alcohol’ and for Guardia Civil numbers to be increased in a bid to lower the number of cases of unruly drunkeness. He added: “These are basic actions to avoid excesses that, although reduced year after year, continue to appear in our municipality, which this year has also been shaken by an increase in young people who have died as a result of falling into voids.” Calvia already has bylaws which make balconing an offence with fines payable by those who indulge in the practice - even if they have been hurt in the process. Drowning figures decline

LIFE SAVERS: Eighty-two per cent of drownings happened where there was no lifeguard service. SIXTY-FIVE people drowned in Spain during August - with a body pulled from the sea off Velez-Malaga being the latest victim to be reported. It is unknown if the body was a bather, diver or had fallen overboard from a ship, but Maritime Rescue (Salvamento Maritimo) say the corpse was found at 6.50pm on Friday, August 31 about 600 metres from the shore. The man may have been in the sea for several days. According to the National Drowning Report which was first published in 2015, drown-

ings in August fell from 70 in 2015 to 60 in 2016, but in the first eight months of the year there has been a big decrease. The Report says that since January 1, 2018, 251 people have died in Spain from drowning in water, 126 fewer than in the same period last year, when 377 people died from drowning, 33.4 per cent less. Andalucia is the Autonomous Community with the most deaths with 36 or 14.3 per cent of the total, ahead of Galicia (34 deaths, 13.5 per cent), the Canary Is-

lands (32, 12.7 per cent), Cataluña (31, 12.4 per cent), the Valencian Community (25, 10 per cent) and the Balearic Islands (22, 8.8 per cent). La Rioja and the Autonomous City of Ceuta (1.4 per cent each) had fewest, while Melilla remains the only territory where no such deadly event has been reported. Of those who drowned, 42.2 per cent were over 65 and 77.3 per cent older than 35. In total, 82 per cent of drownings happened where there was no surveillance or lifeguard service.

SUSPENDED: Prison sentence will not be served.

Jose Mourinho avoids jail MANCHESTER UNITED boss and former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has accepted a fine of €2 million and prison terms totalling one year, although he will not go to jail according to reports. Spanish newspaper El Mundo claims to have seen a final agreement drawn up by prosecutors, in which the Portuguese football manager agrees the penalties. He was accused of defrauding the Spanish tax man of

€3.3 million in 2011 and 2012 while in charge of Real Madrid. Prosecutors claim that Mourinho used offshore accounts in Ireland, the British Virgin Islands and New Zealand to hide earnings from his image rights. Under Spanish law jail sentences of less than two years are suspended if they are first offences. According to El Mundo Mourinho had previously

said: “I did not answer, I did not argue. I paid and signed with the state that I am in compliance and the case is closed,” after a court appearance in Pozuelo de Alarcon in 2017. Mourinho is the latest in a long list of footballers and managers to have fallen foul of the Spanish tax authorities. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the two biggest names to have reached deals with the tax man.

Reports of the sale being cancelled have been confirmed by an unnamed Ministry of Defence source who declined to comment further. Spain and other countries including Britain who have sold weapons to the Saudis have been criticised by NGOs including Amnesty International for doing business with Riyadh. Those groups have claimed the Saudi-led coalition, who backs the Yemen President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Al-Hadi, have bomb targets which resulted in

civilian casualties. The Hadi government is fighting against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. United Nations (UN) officials said recently all sides may have committed war crimes. The UN estimates anywhere between 8,670 and 13,600 people, including 5,200 civilians, died between 2015 and the end of 2017 due to the war. More than 50,000 are believed to have been killed as a result of a famine in Yemen provoked by the conflict. The war started in 2015 and remains ongoing.

Sex worker union outcry Government backtracks on OTRAS status by Joe Gerrard SENIOR members of Spain’s government, including the Prime Minister, have said they will strip a sex worker’s trade union of the official recognition authorities granted it last month. A government spokesperson said its legal counsel had begun reviewing how to revoke the registration with the country’s Labour Ministry of Spain’s Sex Workers Organisation (OTRAS). Magdalena Valerio, the government’s Labour Minister, claimed she had been deceived and did not know her department had signed off the registration. The status was approved by officials and published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on August 4. Valerio said: “As a minister and member of a feminist government, I would never have given the OK for this to published in the BOE.” Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, said the Labour Ministry had begun the process of challenging the union’s new status. “Prostitution is not legal in Spain and this government will not give support to any

STATUS STORM: Valerio (inset) said she never would have approved the status. organisation connected with this illicit activity. “The registration was a mere administration act which did not contain technical errors, but errors of substance. This is a feminist government and it supports the abolition of prostitution,” Sanchez said. Spain’s Labour Ministry said in a statement it would not allow prostitution to become validated by granting the status to the union.

Sanchez has voiced a number of pro feminist positions since taking power last June, including pledging to fight against the exploitation of women. Concha Borrell, the secretary general of OTRAS, said her members wanted justice which is why they had sought official recognition. “The government has been hiding behind the curtain of white, heterosexual and bourgeois feminism to say that

seeking labour rights for an impoverished and stigmatised group is an atrocity,” Borrell said. Marisa Soleto, president of the feminist Women’s Foundation advocacy group, said that sex work cemented inequalities between man and women. “Prostitution is not a job, it’s a submission of women into slavery,” Soleto said. Sex work is neither strictly illegal nor tolerated in Spain.

Own goal by Pique BARCELONA footballer player Gerard Pique could face up to six months in jail after he was caught driving without a valid licence. According to reports from radio station Cadena Ser he was pulled over for a routine check and asked to show his documents. Police officers found he had zero points left on his licence so he

should not have been driving. In Spain drivers start with 12 points and then lose them for various offences. Once they have lost all their points they can’t drive until points are reinstated, normally after a ban and a written test following a road safety training session. Taking to the roads before having points reinstated is an offence punishable

by up to six months in prison or a fine of €6,000. This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the police. Last year he was fined for speeding and in 2014 he had to pay €10,500 for disobedience after an argument with a traffic officer. His brother was fined for a road infringement in the same incident.

NO POINTS: Pique shouldn’t have been driving.

Firm rate hike talks THE governing Partido Socialista (PSOE) has held talks with allies from a leftist party in Parliament over plans to increase a range of business taxes, a senior member said. The proposals were floated during talks between PSOE officials and members of the Unidos Podemos group over next year’s budget plans. Pablo Echenique, Podemos’ Organisation Secretary, said members of the government had told his party they were willing to look into proposals to hike rates on business savings. Making multinationals pay more to

by Joe Gerrard the Spanish Treasury and taxing transactions was also discussed, Echenique added. “Both parties were curious as to why many business taxes were not progressive and we considered studying it in future meetings,” Echenique said. “Taxation not only serves to pay for the Welfare State. It also serves to create economic justice in the country so that people and companies contribute in a progressive manner depending on their wealth,” the Podemos official added.

Progressive taxation refers to a system where payers hand over larger proportions of their earnings if those rise above set levels. Rates including those on banks, multinationals and digital firms were discussed at the meeting. There was also talk of simplifying the corporate tax regime which Echenique claimed left smaller companies paying proportionately higher levels of tax than large firms. Nothing was agreed at the meeting and both Podemos and PSOE are set to look into the proposals before committing to the plans.

SPAIN’S manufacturing sector grew slightly more than in July, by three points in August compared to 2.9 according to an industry index. MONEY WORRIES: The index figure fell this month. CONSUMER confidence fell last month in Spain compared to July due to a pessimistic assessment of the current economic situation and doubts over the future, according to research. The Consumer Confidence Indicator (ICC), published by the Centre from Sociological Research (CIS), posted a figure of 102.4 for August, down 3.7 points on the previous month’s figure.

A number below 100 points indicates a negative outlook. The CIS phoned 2,000 Spanish households to gather the data. It said 66.5 per cent of respondents believed their economic situation was the same as it was six months ago. Respondents rated the current situation at 99.3 points owing to job, finance and economy factors, 2.4 less than July. Expectations stood at 105.6 points.

economy and consumers in mind. “There has been a lot of talk about the diesel tax but the government has not even announced it yet, let’s wait and see,” the minister said. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said government officials were mulling the levy as part of wider plans to curb pollution and save energy.

US dollar falters after dovish Fed comments Ask the expert Peter Loveday Contact me at euroweekly@currenciesdirect.com

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news So-called ‘no-deal’ Brexit fears have continued to weigh heavily on the pound in recent days, even after officials announced that the deadline for the conclusion of talks has been pushed back from October to November. This helped to drive the pound to euro exchange rate to a fresh 11-month low this week in spite of mounting tensions over the Italian budget. Across the pond, the GBP/USD exchange rate was able to recover some ground, thanks to unexpectedly dovish commentary from the American Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. What’s been happening? As the UK Treasury released technical notes relating to the impact of a no-deal Brexit investors were prompted to pile out of the pound once again.

GBP/USD: The exchange rate was able to recover some ground across the pond. With talks on key outstanding issues such as the Irish border still showing no signs of meaningful progress, hopes of a positive conclusion to negotiations remain limited. Even though the CBI reported the retail sales index for August showed a surprise uptick from 20 to 29, this proved not to be enough to give GBP exchange rates any significant boost. As the increase in sales was largely attributed to the British summer heatwave, rather than positive underlying trends, the impact of the data proved short-lived.

Signs of optimism in the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting minutes offered a boost to the euro, meanwhile. Although the ECB looks to be shifting towards a more positive outlook, the single currency still came under pressure thanks to worries over the Italian government. With the populist government on a collision course with EU budget rules, thus raising the threat of a fresh Eurozone crisis, confidence in the euro took a nosedive. The US dollar saw some fluctuations as mar-

kets reassessed the odds of the Fed raising interest rates twice more before the end of the year. However, as global trade tensions persisted this helped to limit the vulnerability of the dollar. What do you need to look out for? German and Eurozone inflation data for August could see the euro rally sharply across the board, with price pressures forecast to remain above the ECB’s 2 per cent target. As long as inflation continues to run higher than the ECB target, the chances of the central bank tightening monetary policy sooner rather than later are set to increase, likely weakening the pound. US trade data could provoke some volatility for the US dollar, with any widening of the deficit likely to encourage further action from the Trump administration to level the playing field. In terms of UK data, if August’s PMIs prove positive this may encourage the pound to return to a stronger footing against its rivals. It’s all part of the magician’s illusion LEAPY LEE SAYS IT THE problem with politicians and their respective governments, is that in order to survive, they have to be, (among other things), appeasers, hypocrites, backside kissers, downright liars and media illusionists. Irrespective of their policies, their very survival relies on their skill to deliver each of these ‘attributes’ whenever deemed necessary. May and her party of disarray, are very good at most - if not all of them! Blatantly revealing her departments’ total disregard for the local British populace, she revealed a disgraceful appeasement of the Muslims who were slaughtering animals in their suburban back gardens, by declaring the practice was quite acceptable, if the meat was for their own use! No doubt her department also happily condoned the checkout person, who was allowed an unprecedented alcohol-free aisle because his religion didn’t allow it. This latest decision to grandly descend on South Africa, bearing gifts of foreign aid, and seeking future business ties to a country knee deep in diamonds, gold and other natural resources, actually manages to fill all the aforementioned criteria in one fell swoop. South Africa is run by a party steeped in bloodshed, corruption and terrorism. White inhabitants

OTHERS THINK IT

FOREIGN AID: Theresa May recently visited South Africa. are being murdered in the streets and have become victims of (largely unreported) genocide in a country run by a gang of despots, who retain much of their popularity by showing their black citizens they are willing to continually condone and support revenge on the white races who ‘stole’ their country. Following the same disastrous policies of Zim-

babwe, they are repossessing farms from white owners, who have run them successfully for generations, at an alarming rate. From 1994 to 2013 there were 1,544 murders on SA farms of which a mere 208 were black. A simpering May chooses to ignore all these racist atrocities and corrupt practices from this murderous bunch and dance among them (very

badly I may add!) offering ‘a wonderful future of trade and closer alliance between our great countries!’ And why has she chosen Africa as her initial venture into the forging of possible new postBrexit trade opportunities with the Commonwealth? Because she is totally aware that in these insecure, war torn and despot run countries, she will get the most favourable reception. She knows full well that these governments are desperate to be seen doing business with the ‘Mother country.’ It does untold good to their credibility and appearance of legitimacy among their own downtrodden citizens and indeed the rest of the world. In return, back in the UK, slippery May can boast of going forth into the world and fulfilling her promises to expand our global trade after leaving the EEC. All this is part of the illusion. While the British audience is busy looking at magician May, her ‘backstage assistants’ are busy negotiating the rest of the Brexit ‘compromises’ that will betray British democracy and keep us still tied to this unelected, overpaid bunch of utterly nasty self-serving Brussel zealots forever. Have a great week. Thanks for all your mail. Only 110 days till Christmas! Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

Nick Horne The Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England BENTLEY MOTORS LTD will be marking its 1919-2019 Centenary with some style and no doubt noisily has announced that July 10, 2019 will be ‘Centenary Day.’ Bentley Motors confirmed some of the special Centenary Specifications that will be applied across all its models. Inspired by an illustrious past the Centenary Specification will feature on all of the Bentleys built at the Crewe works, England between January and De-

‘A fast car, a good car, the best in its class’ cember 2019. Unique tread plates, Centenary Badges, seat embroidery and special details that are still to be revealed are aimed at making the 2019 production yet more desirable and collectable. Bentley Motors was established in 1919, in September 1921 the first production model was delivered. The car presented had the radiator grille that

was to become its hallmark together with the Flying ‘B’ insignia. The very first Bentley owner Mr Noel van Raalte paid the princely sum of £1,050 for this soon to be iconic automobile. The price tag attached to a 2019 Bentley will be considerably more! In most cases more than 100 times as much at least. The 1920’s saw Bentley Motors produce some of the most distinctive cars of the era. WO Bentley the founder of the marque was also an enthusiastic racer developing engines to power his cars that went on to win famous victories at endurance and speed races at Brooklands, Indianapolis and the Isle of Man. The legendary achievements of the ‘Bentley Boys’ saw success after success at Le Mans with five heroic wins. WO Bentley the founder of Bentley Motors is said to have

been guided by a principle summed up as ‘a fast car, a good car, the best in its class’ through decades of innovation Bentley has built desirable Grand Tourers with a unique combination of luxury and performance. The four luxurious Bentley Motors model lines; Continental, Flying Spur, Bentayga and the Mulsanne will be yet further enhanced with Centenary detailing. Centenary Gold will be a particular feature of this enrichment. A metallic gold that has been specially created to shine and reflect light like precious jewellery. Centenary Gold will make its presence felt across the 2019 production year from gear shifts to headrest emblems and key fobs reflecting the marque’s heritage and racing triumphs. Centenary Gold, a contemporary interpretation with an elegant warm tone, inspired by the metal work found on vintage Bentleys such as the EXP 2 of 1919 and the ‘Birkin’ Blower of 1929. Now is a good time to be dreaming about which car you will be driving in 2019.

BENTLEY: The Centenary will be marked with some style.

A day in the life of a debt collector AFTER 40 years in the debt collection industry I never cease to be surprised by the excuses given by some of the people we have to deal with. Of c o u r se m o st a re p o lite , helpful and eager to sort out any queries on the account. They are happy to confirm addresses and emails so that payment can be made and are delighted to arrange a payment plan mutually acceptable to client and customer. But some are so outlandish in their excuses that if it were not so serious one could say ‘you couldn’t write this stuff’… The most appalling excuses are when the debtor uses health or accident issues with family members , wh i c h a f t e r ch ec k in g o f course, are completely untrue. We have the fashion shop owner who has attended his mother’s fune r a l f i v e t i m e s s o fa r th is year … t h e c o n v e nien ce s to re mother who is only running the shop because the son (owner) has

OUTLANDISH: Some of the excuses given for non-payment. been in a horrific road crash in Germany only last week - he answered the telephone two days later and was shocked when we told him we thought he was in an accident… the very nice email from a concerned debtor because we had wished him a speedy recovery from his desperate illness, he was in fact enjoying a skiing holiday in Switzerland and could not understand why his manager

had given us such information. Then we have the more mundane, but more obvious excuses such as the old favourite ‘cheque is in the post,’ now superseded by ‘I definitely transferred the money last week through my computer,’ same excuse different century. The change of ownership exc us e is ofte n a c a us e for c oncern…. Business was sold sim-

ply on a handshake or ‘I am simply running the business because the owner has disappeared.’ Of course these excuses are not given every day but it is depressing that some people seem to lose any ethical morals when it comes to paying bills. Is it a sign of the times or the fact that creditors have allowed a credit situation to get out of control. I have always thought that it is not the debtor always at fault for taking extended credit, but the supplier’s fault for allowing it to happen. Inaction by any supplier, creditor, business or community, in any credit situation is often the root cause of late payment. The lesson to be learnt is often ‘The Quicker We Act The Sooner We Get Paid.’ U nfort unat el y t her e wi l l al ways be those that consider it a game to delay, frustrate and tease the supplier, but with professionalism, speed and determination such excuses can be overcome.

We must never be afraid of confronting late payment issues at a much earlier stage. In 40 years I have never been berated for genuinely and politely seeking to sort out an apparent late payment problem. After all it is not what you say, but how you say it. We wi l l never be f r ee f r om those that seek to avoid payment with untrue excuses but using all our skills it can often be overcome. A serious one this week Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE been grumpy about this before, but this week my plight was brought to the notice of the world because it happened to someone in the public eye. Anne Wafula Strike, a Paralympian, had to wait nearly an hour to be helped from her flight. She had booked her assistance weeks before, as I have on many occasions. This is not an unusual occurrence. It happens at every airport and with every airline - people needing assistance can wait for ages to be helped from the aircraft. If you travel with your own wheelchair it can be a bigger problem because sometimes your chair is not brought to the aircraft and finishes up in the baggage hall. The other problem is that if there is more than one person needing assistance, everyone has to wait to be herded together and go off in a convoy. If it’s when you are boarding a lot of the time you are moved from one holding area to another. To be honest, the people that help you are all very good; it’s the actual system that’s the problem. Firstly, there are not enough helpers at most airports. Secondly, they need some disabled peoples’ input. All we want is to be able to

have almost the same choices as able bodied folks do at airports, train stations and even ports. I was going on a cruise; I got there in plenty of time and had booked assistance in advance. As everybody boarded they were greeted by members of staff with champers and music and a party atmosphere. I, in my wheelchair, was taken to another entrance in the area where they loaded the supplies and was loaded from there. That can’t be right, can it? Here’s something else that affects me. Not everyone in a wheelchair has a disability that means they cannot walk or stand or get out of their wheelchair. I suffer from Primary Orthostatic Tremor - Google it - I can walk but I cannot stand still for more than two or three seconds. The tremor in my legs is three to four times faster than someone with Parkinson’s. Tremors are measured in Hz. Parkinson’s tremors are between 4-6Hz. My tremor is 1517Hz. The point I’m making is, when you see someone get out of their wheelchair and walk, don’t do, as some people do, which is to either mutter ‘it’s a miracle’ or tut or whatever. Take a moment and accept they may be like me and have something rare that you have never heard of. Don’t group all wheelchair users as being the same. Sorry, a serious one this week, but hey ho. mikesenker@gmail.com

TECH FOR THE TIMID REMEMBER the famous Big Mac Index, invented by (peckish?) Economist journalists in 1986? It was intended as a more ‘realistic’ measure of a country’s wealth than the infinitely more boring Gross National Product. So today Ukrainians can buy three Big Macs for the price of one in Spain - which in turn is 30 per cent cheaper than in Switzerland. The index does of course come unstuck in those parts of the world McDonald’s hasn’t yet colonised. With relatively few golden-arch franchises, Africa has its own equivalent: the KFC Index. Also problematic is that you apparently get 8 per cent less burger in your Mexican Big Mac than you do in Australia. But now the techno age has spawned a new index. This one highlights the huge gap, nay gulf, between what it actually takes for consumers to buy the very same electronics around the world - devices almost all made in the same place (China), but with very dif-

EVER felt that September is the real start of the New Year - and not January? The time when, after the long summer break, kids are back at school and adults at work. So much so that, when I still lived and worked in the UK, I used to think of the day after the August Bank Holiday weekend as ‘back to school for adults.’ September always felt like a new beginning because of the change in routine (at least if you were in school or had kids in school). A time of fresh starts, self-evaluation and, for travel operators, the inevitable post-holiday complaints. Like some of the following that do nothing to dispel the stereotype that we Brits are a nation of whingers! Some past complaints from British tourists (all genuine - honest!) are particularly telling. One angry tourist who took a summer cruise around Alaska complained the weather wasn’t as warm as expected - ‘I wish I stayed at home!’ For another, ‘topless sunbathing should be banned!’ because her ‘holiday was ruined - my husband spent all day ogling women.’ Others moaned their holidays were

Burgernomics vs the iPhone Which index shows how rich we really are: iPhones or Big Macs, wonders Terence Kennedy

BIG MAC: The techno age has spawned a new index. ferent degrees of affordability. Take the recent iPhone X. At a wallet-bruising €1,150 or so in much of Europe, it’s today’s most expensive mainstream phone (alongside its new rival, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9). The X has spawned an adaptation of the Big Mac Index: how long you would actually have to work to buy one.

The Swiss (yes, them again) can trouser a new iPhone X after working just 38 hours. Spaniards must toil nearly four times as much, 140 hours. Spare a free ringtone for the Ukrainians (708 hours), Indians (900 hours) and the poor old Egyptians (1,066 hours). The good news is that although

technology doubles in power roughly every two years according to Moore’s Law, fortunately it doesn’t double in price. In fact it’s getting cheaper. Back in 1982, you might recall from a previous column, a basic word-processor cost an eye-watering €7,500 in today’s money. Last night I spotted a mini computer on Amazon for €90, and a Raspberry Pi for barely a third of that. The original 2001 iPod was around €350, which would be about €500 today. But it isn’t: the current iPod costs less than €150 in most of Europe. And some lesser music players are now so cheap they’ll soon be giving them away with your cornflakes. So despite not living in Zurich there’s at least some hope for the rest of us. Burgernomics apart, by all the statistics technology is indeed becoming steadily more affordable for all of us every day we wait. It’s the waiting that’s so hard.

September’s the perfect time for all your ‘New Year’ resolutions!

Just some old antelopes.’ A man even sent a complaint to Disneyworld claiming it was ‘too touristy.’ Other

complaints included: ‘You said the town was next to a volcano, but we went and there was no lava. I’m pretty sure it was just a mountain.’ ‘We booked an excursion to a water park but nobody told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels.’ Good grief! What’s up with these guys? I’d be more than happy to go out and buy a spare cossie and towel for that water park. Because it would mean I WAS having a holiday! (Handsome hunks, an extra bonus!) Loss leader WHILE the iPhone has virtually the highest profit margin of any mainstream techno product today (it sells for a bruising three times what it actually costs to make, still want to buy one?), some tech products actually sell below cost. Perhaps the most famous bargain is still Amazon’s Kindle e-reader. Not only does poor Mr Bezos make zero profit on every one he sells, but he’s actually selling it at a loss in many cases. Until you factor in all the ebooks he dearly hopes to flog you. Printers have long been sold with a similar rationale. They’re often highly-subsidised devices which you will finance many times over by buying their ink at a costper-drop infinitely higher than the finest Champagne. A pity there isn’t an indelible Cava.

QUICK

The need to be popular midweek could see you veer off track on a business matter. You have been warned and will be able to avoid it if you wish. Do not underestimate how much hassle a wrong move could cause you. On the domestic front, you are able to fully relax and enjoy good company.

As someone is not showing the required amount of interest in your activities, you need a plan. Telephoning them and pointing out what you have achieved is one way, but it's not cool. Getting a few people together and using someone else to blow your trumpet for you is better.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Having been dashing about like a mad thing, you find this week a refreshing change. Only when you slow down do you realise how much you have been doing and just how tired you have become. There are some social engagements that you would not miss for the world, however.

CODE BREAKER

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) By using your intuition midweek, you will be able to solve a small problem at the weekend. Thinking ahead sometimes seems a waste of time to you because circumstances have a way of changing, but it makes sense to put in a bit of extra effort if you are able to avoid aggravation.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) A mistake seems a small thing until someone notices it. Although you feel that they are making a mountain out of a molehill, it still leaves a nasty feeling. Get out and do something completely different at the weekend. Not only will it blow the cobwebs away, but it will also put in perspective any negative thoughts.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) A business colleague may be less than honest with you. When it is a small matter you are used to them bending the truth. This is not, however, something that you will want to let go by, so stay on your toes. On the home front, you tend to be

snappy with loved ones because you are feeling stressed.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Looking for answers? They are there if only you go to the right source. There is no 'quick fix' this week and you need to delve deeper to get the information you need. It will be tempting to take a short cut but, believe me, it will not be worth the hassle in the longer term. Once you have the right facts you are truly in charge of what happens next.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) You are very much in two minds about how to deal with a personal situation. Ask yourself which approach will help and which will do nothing to help at all. Although you want to shout at someone and feel negative at times, hold fire.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Getting a romantic situation wrong could cause a humourous moment this weekend. I am not telling you this so you can avoid it. You could do with a good laugh right now. Planning ahead is your preferred method but sometimes it is the lastminute decision that brings the best results.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) The thing that you have to tackle this week is uppermost in your mind, but don't dwell on it. Write it down and what you intend doing about it, then put it away. Relax and get on with other things. When you do come to take it out again and face the situation it will be so much easier.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Imposing restrictions on someone else also imposes restrictions on you. Why? Well, you have to hang around and see that your wishes are followed and take further action if they are not.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Avoid getting involved in other people's arguments. There is no way that you can come out a winner if you do. Taking a step backwards is sometimes the best thing. You have been down this path before, and did your intervention do any good?

QUIZ: TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE The last few letters of the answer to first questions will be the first few letters of the answer to the second question 1. Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

CARLES PUIGDEMONT, former regional president of Cataluña, proclaimed the republic on October 27 but having talked the talk, immediately walked the walk to self-exile in Belgium. It was like playing the opening bars of Beethoven’s Fifth before switching to Benny Hill’s theme tune and Spain has been trying unsuccessfully to retrieve him ever since. Accused of rebellion, sedition and misappropriation of public funds, he was temporarily held in Germany when returning from a conference in Denmark. Pablo Llarena, the Spanish judge handling the case, was piqued when his German colleagues failed to recognise rebellion and sedition and said he could have Puigdemont back, but only for misappropriation. Llarena turned down the offer and the expresident is now ensconced in his Waterloo home. To make things really kosher he is suing Llarena, accusing him of bias, partisanship and violating his basic rights. The judge is known to have right-wing leanings and links to FAES, Jose Maria Aznar’s think-tank, Puigdemont’s writ points out. After some hesitation, Pedro Sanchez’s government, which was initially prepared to

A date at Waterloo A decent burial THE Valle de Los Caidos was ostensibly a war memorial containing the remains of 40,000 combatants from both sides who lost their lives in the Civil War. In reality it was a paean to the man who started it all, the dictator Francisco Franco who was buried there on November 23, 1975. “A dictator should not have a State tomb in a democracy. It’s incompatible,” said the vicepresident of the Spanish government, Carmen Calvo. It has been agreed that Franco’s body will be moved and re-interred with dignity wherever his family see fit. Which is more than can be said for the thousands of the dictator’s adversaries whose bodies were tossed into mass graves.

Tie a yellow ribbon YELLOW ribbons in Spain have come to signify solidarity with members of Cataluña’s previous regional government who are now in prison. The ribbons are seen principally in Cataluña, but universal Catalans like Pepe Guardiola, former Barça trainer and now at Manchester City, ostentatiously displayed one until he was

Balls up MATAELPINO (Madrid) has substituted bull-running with ball-running where the idea is to outrun a giant white Styrofoam ball. Unfortunately, like Rover in The Prisoner, the ball was less than innocuous and this year a male participant suffered serious head injuries when he was crushed between the ball and the fence. To the satisfaction of smug taurinos the Mataelpino ball-running claims casualties each year. But at least they have chosen to face a 250-kilo ball and not a terrified animal.

fined £20,000 by the FA for making a political statement on a football pitch. Guardiola said it was worth every penny, but back in Cataluña the 50 per cent of the population who do not want independence have begun removing the ribbons. It’s supposed to be a free country but in some towns in southern Cataluña the regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have been identifying the people who are taking them away. It’s Animal Farm again where Napoleon the pig - back to Waterloo - declared that all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. You could just as easily say that all democracies are equal but some - like Cataluña - are less equal than others.

Weight loss plan THE highly successful Cambridge Weight Plan is now available in the region of Almeria, enabling anyone who is aiming to lose weight for whatever reason to benefit from a programme which is based not merely on specific food products, but also on the advice and encouragement provided by individual consultants in one-to-one sessions. Cambridge Weight Plan, which was featured recently on Channel 4, was designed by doctors over 30 years ago in order to help people lose weight quickly and safely for surgery, and its effectiveness has since been shown in countless clinical trials. But if you’re setting out on the hard road to weight loss, the important point of contact is the consultant who will guide you through the CWP. All consultants have first-hand experience of weight loss the CWP way, and therefore bring a personal understanding of what others are going through as well as the back-up of extensive in-house training and examinations. In the region of Almeria, consultant Debra Bradder is based in the Arboleas and Albox area with two clinics a week and one clinic a week in Turre. One year ago she lost around

three stone through CWP. Now she is keen to share the benefits of the Cambridge Weight Plan with others in the Almeria region, and offers her advice and help. At your first session with your consultant, a Personal Record Form will be filled in before any products are selected and recommended, and from then on the consultant follows your progress during successive visits. Once a target weight has been set, the four stages then consist of preparation, actual weight loss, stabilisation and long-term weight management: this last part is particularly important, and ideally you will continue to see your consultant until you are confident you can successfully manage your new weight. The Cambridge Weight Plan products offer a range of flavours and tastes, and your consultant will stock or make available the complete range of products. These meals are priced from as little as €2.50, and the weekly one-to-one consultation is free of charge! Cambridge Weight Plan is the only weight loss plan which is fully licensed, registered, checked and authorised by the Spanish health authorities: contact Debra to find out more!

BENEFITS: The positive effects of a cup of rooibos are far reaching.

The rewards of rooibus IT’S a well-known fact that rooibos is better for you than normal tea, but just how much better is surprising. And once you’ve heard about these ‘extra’ health and beauty benefits, chances are you’ll be sipping rooibus in favour of your regular cuppa. An added bonus is that you can get all the beautifying effects without the herb, which originates from South Africa, even touching your lips. Acne sufferers will be interested to hear that rooibos is rich in alpha hydroxy and zinc – both vital nutrients for healthy skin. Alpha hydroxy reduces the signs of ageing and revi-

talises skin, while zinc heals wounds, protects against UV rays and has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with acne, random monthly pimples and sunburn. Sip on a cup, or even apply the tea straight to your skin! Rooibus, also known as bush or redbush tea, is also said to help with hair loss. A cup a day not only keeps your locks healthy and strong, but may also help prevent hair loss. Apparently, its active ingredients actually help remove dead skin cells that block hair follicles and prevent hair from growing. It’s also packed with zinc, calcium, copper and potassium (es-

sential for hair growth), and polyphenols (antioxidants), which promote shiny, soft tresses. It’s easy to prepare your own tea rinse at home. Steep for 30 minutes in boiled water. Once cooled, pour over freshly washed or conditioned hair, or simply spray it on. Allow to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing. As mentioned, the antioxidants in rooibos have anti-inflammatory properties, which assist in preventing cardiovascular disease, while its antiviral properties boost your immune system. It also has a hypoglycaemic effect on the body, helping to balance blood sugar and improve insulin resistance, which may help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. The tea has also been proven to remedy irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The antispasmodic agents in rooibos help ease stomach aches and pains, and aid digestion. It is reported that this is because it smooths out the muscles in the gut. Sufferers should try drinking a cup about half an hour before a meal to get the most out of this effect. Apparently, rooibos can also help with asthma. It’s a bronchodilator (a substance that dilates the bronchi and bronchioles in lungs to increase airflow) and many researchers believe the tea can alleviate the symptoms of asthma. And finally, although there are bound to be even more health and beauty benefits, rooibos can help lower your

A busy autumn ahead for MACS

MACS: Volunteers take time out for well-earned cake. WITH the sun ready to set on a long hot summer, the work continues at MACS (Mojacar area cancer support). With increased numbers of patients and families looking for help and support from the group, the hard-working volunteers keep up the pace with one-to one visits, group meetings, keeping the shops in ship-shape and organising events. The next big fundraising event in the MACS calendar is just around the corner; the ‘Smokin Hot’ BBQ is on this Saturday. The party takes place at Miraflores, on Camping Los Gallardos and starts at 12.30. Some fabulous musical acts will keep the revellers entertained, including; Kayleigh Easton, The Happy Pluckers, Jack Law, RoadRunner, Marilyn Shipley, Lost Track and Tony Justice. The €12 entry fee includes delicious food, and drinks will available to purchase at the bar. If you don’t want to eat and just want to enjoy the entertainment, the entrance-only fee is €5. This is another event not to be missed and tickets are still available direct from Miraflores, call 650 418 954 or purchase online at www.campinglosgallardos.com/events. From the end of September, it’s time to ‘put the kettle on,’ the ever-popular ‘Make a Cuppa Special for MACS’ fundraiser runs throughout the month of October and is open to anyone who wants to organise their own event and raise money for the charity. Since MACS began this initiative, there have been dozens of fun get-togethers, each with its own individual twist. The general idea is to get a group of friends together and enjoy a morning or afternoon with homemade cakes, washed down with plenty of tea

or coffee (or cava!) and collect donations for MACS. Permission forms along with more information are available from any of the MACS shops. In other MACS news, the shops have a great new range of stock items in place, including good quality clothing, an excellent opportunity for you to give your autumn wardrobe a fresh look. It’s never too early to put some gifts away for Christmas, the shops also have a great variety of gift items and nick-nacks, perfect stocking fillers for friends and family. The recently opened Albox2 shop is proving to be a popular go-to outlet for picking up bargain, quality furniture. If you have any unwanted furniture items don’t forget we have a collection service to take it off your hands and help raise money for MACS, call 634 328 334/5 to arrange collection. If you haven’t visited a MACS shop yet, here’s a reminder of where you can find them; there are two in Albox, along with branches in Turre, Huercal-Overa, Mojacar and Las Buganvillas. Pop in, you never know what you might find! MACS has been supporting cancer patients and their families for more than a decade and continues to expand its reach to help more people who are battling this terrible disease. The charity can’t function without its supporters and MACS welcomes assistance in any way, be it donations, fundraising, volunteering or simply just spreading the word. For more information on MACS and its work, call 634 328 334, email macscancer support@live.co.uk or visit MACS on Facebook.

Well groomed men A GOOD skin care regime is not exclusive to women, men need one too. Only cleansing and moisturising is not enough to keep male skin healthy and clean. To avoid dry, dull and brittle skin, it’s important to follow a skin care plan. Men tend to have oilier and thicker skin, so it’s advisable to choose a good facial cleanser that works on all kinds of skin. Cleansing sanitises and eliminates dead skin cells without drying. It also helps to avoid whiteheads, blackheads and acne. Toning balances and tightens. Moisturising prevents cracks and dry and dull skin, as well as offering protection and healing benefits. Sunscreen is a must, with a minimum SPF of 30, making sure it’s applied 15 minutes before heading out so that it is well absorbed.

SINGER and songwriter Andrés Suárez, who started off playing in a number of rock bands, but decided that he wanted to be a solo artist, will be playing in Almeria City on Saturday October 6. He walked away from music a few years ago to become an actor, appearing on stage and in a popular Venezuelan soap opera, but has now returned to his first love and is in the middle of a long nationwide tour. With three albums released, he is performing one of the songs from his yet to be released next album entitled El Corazón me Ardida (My heart burns me) which has a powerful rock treatment combining guitar and organ. This is a move from his more melancholy style of the past and suggests that his forthcoming performance at the Madchester Sala with advance tickets costing €15 plus booking fee should be one to see.

Eat Well

to Live Well by Andrew Harding LAST week I completed my discussion about vitamins, this week I want to discuss essential minerals. Essential minerals can be divided into two categories; macro and micro-minerals. Macro-minerals are defined as minerals present in the average human body of five grams or more, they are: Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Micro-minerals, (which I will discuss next week) are present in quantities a lot smaller than five grams. Calcium: The most abundant mineral in the body, is needed for bone and tooth formation and for a healthy nervous system. The average adult has 1kg of calcium in their body. Dairy products are a good source, as are non boned fish such as sardines and whitebait. Phosphorous: Is also required for bone and tooth formation and keeping the body’s cell walls intact. It has the same dietary sources as calcium. Magnesium: Is required to activate enzyme function and necessary for nerve function and bone formation. Any greenleaved vegetable is a good source. Sodium: This regulates the water con-

Spain is a hot country and salt is lost during perspiration, the resultant deficiency can result in muscle cramps. Potassium: Necessary for the normal functioning of cells, deficiency is rare because potassium is found in most foods; bananas are a particularly good source. This week’s recipe: (Chateaubriand: ‘A large steak cut from the thickest part of a fillet of beef.’) Roast Chateaubriand with a Bearnaise Sauce Serves 4 1kg piece Chateaubriand Steak 1 tablespoon olive oil Pour the olive oil into a frying pan on a medium heat.

Sear it on all sides to seal in the juices. Place in an oven tin and then into an oven pre-heated to 200 Celsius (conventional) or 180 Celsius (fan). Cook for 25 minutes per pound plus 25 minutes for medium to well done, 20 minutes per pound for rare to medium. When it is cooked, take it out of the oven, cover and let it rest for 10 minutes. Call for sports help THE PP political party has called for the town hall and Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas to continue to support the Villa de Albox football club. In a statement the opposition party said: “The practice of sports is everyone’s responsibility, and it is the duty of the administration to encourage, support and collaborate through all possible means, so that citizens have the opportunity to practise sports.” The reason for the statement remains unclear, with the PP saying there is a ‘possible decrease in the collaboration’ between the town council and the football club. The statement added: ‘Far from wanting to cause any alarm, we not only ask the mayor of Albox to ensure that the town council does not stop collaborating in this specific case with the football club, where more than 100 of our children play football, but we also ask that he supports and encourages the practice of sport in each of its disciplines. ‘Therefore, and without doubting the understanding of this situation, we appeal to the goodwill of the municipal government, so that as soon as possible it commits itself to the collaboration, promotion and improve-

the society we intend to build.” He added: “In addition to transmitting values to our young people such as fair play, discipline, companionship, solidarity, effort and respect for the rules of the game, sport also fosters healthy lifestyle habits.”

Swimming treat CANTORIA Town Hall welcomed severely handicapped people from the Francisco Pérez Miras Residence Hall in Albox to use its swimming pool. It has been completely adapted so that any person can use the facilities, equipped as it is with ramps and lifting chairs. They were welcomed by the mayor of Cantoria, Puri Sanchez, who said that it was very satisfying to see people enjoying themselves so much in the pool. Although there is an adapted swimming pool at the home it has been closed through the summer months while a leak is being fixed.

COOL DOWN: Disabled residents enjoyed a swim. The Association of People with Disabilities El Saliente thanked the mayor for the invitation and for having helped

normalise the lives of the residents, who had been unable to bathe throughout the summer.

RECENTLY founded group Arte Albox has put on its first exhibition. The Diputacion Provincial de Almeria is the venue for the display and will run until September 12. At the moment there are three artists plus a company called Moix Design in the group, which is open to more artists who want to join. The group’s first exhibition is in the Patio de Luces at the Provincial Palace (Palacio Provincial). ‘Arte Albox’ is, according to its members, ‘born from friendship and a love of art.’ Its members are people who at some point in their career have dared to take the leap from being spectators to trying to share their passion for art although each one in different fields and interpretations. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Deputy for Culture, Antonio Rodríguez, and by the members of Arte Albox: Andrés del Águila, Antonio

Auris badge to disappear IT’S bye bye Auris and hello Corolla. Toyota has decided that all its new generation C-segment (compact) hatchbacks, sedans and estates will carry the Corolla name globally. This means that the Auris nameplate will be discontinued as the Japanese manufacturer capitalises on its Corolla brand, which has seen sales of 45 million around the world - more than any other car. The change will happen in 2019 with the introduction of the new

THE good news for lovers of the Jaguar E-type who want to have a minimal impact on the environment is that they will soon be able to buy an all-electric version. The company’s Jaguar Classic division has announced it will restore and convert E-types ‘following an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the original concept for ‘the most beautiful electric car in the world’.’ A concept version of the EV version of the car was unveiled at Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest in September 2017, and it certainly drew attention. Combining its restoration expertise with cutting-edge technology from the Jaguar I-PACE, the award-winning zero-emissions performance SUV, Jaguar Classic will offer tailor-made E-types restored and converted to electric power at the same Classic Works facility as its outstanding E-type Reborn restorations in Coventry, UK. An EV conversion service for existing E-type owners will also be offered. To preserve the au-

Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the Jaguar Etype Zero concept. Future-proofing the enjoyment of classic car ownership is a major stepping stone for Jaguar Classic. “E-type Zero showcases the in-

credible heritage of the E-type, and the expertise and craftsmanship at Classic Works, while demonstrating Jaguar Land Rover’s dedication to creating zero emission vehicles across every part of the business, including Jaguar Classic.” Technical specifications and pricing details will follow, but Jaguar Classic is now taking expressions of interest from poten-

tial E-type Zero clients. Deliveries of the first electric E-type vehicles are expected to start from summer 2020. The company says that its Jaguar E-type Zero concept not only drives and looks like an Etype, it also offers outstanding performance, with quicker acceleration than the original Series 1 E-type. Jaguar Classic is targeting a

range in excess of 170 miles for all-electric E-types, helped by the car’s low kerb weight and sleek aerodynamics. The concept is powered by a 40kWh battery, which can be recharged in six to seven hours, depending on power source. Apart from its state-of-the-art powertrain, modified instrumentation and fascia showcasing the latest touchscreen infotainment

(which will be available as an option), the E-type Zero concept is largely original. An electric powertrain with single-speed reduction gear has been specially designed for the Etype, utilising many Jaguar IPACE components. Its lithiumion battery pack has the same dimensions, and similar weight, to the standard E-type’s six-cylinder petrol XK engine and is in the same location. Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol engine and transmission means the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, has not changed, simplifying the conversion and keeping the driving experience in line with the original vehicle. It drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type.

Opel’s latest hot hatch is launched

OPEL has launched the new Corsa GSi, it’s latest iteration of a hot hatch. Insurance costs put them out of fashion for a while, but in recent years the market has seen resurgence for small, nimble cars that boast impressive performance. After the Insignia, the Corsa is the second GSi model now on offer. Opel says it has an “ultra- precise OPC chassis – for exemplary handling and short braking distances,” which

have always been the virtues of the beast hot hatches. The new model is powered by Opel’s lively 1.4-litre turbo engine which produces 110 kW/150 hp and 220 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption isn’t too bad either, ranging between 5.1 l/100km on the open road and 8 l/100km around town. The four-cylinder power unit features a special GSicalibration for increased responsiveness. It is paired with a short-ratio, six-speed gearbox, for extra ng punch in second and third gears. This makes it quick off the mark, reaching 100 km/h from rest in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of a penalty points inducing 207 km/h.

Suzuki Swift SZ5

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher

SWIFT: A fresh new look.

STATS PANEL

SALES of the Suzuki Swift have topped six million across 158 countries, making it one of the most successful models ever for the famous Japanese manufacturer. This popular hatchback was revised last year, giving it a fresh new look, more cabin space and improved performance and economy. Swift is priced from €13,256 (£11,999) and while available only as a fivee-door, clever styling gives it a coupe appearance by disguising the rear door handles. With cutaway headlights and larger front grille the latest version is 10 per cent lighter, 19 per cent more powerful and 8 per cent more economical than its predecessor. There a choice of 1.0 litre three-cylinder Boosterjet turbo petrol engine or 1.2 litre four-cylinder Dualjet engine, and there is a good level of standard kit - all models get features which include DAB radio, Bluetooth, LED run-

ning lights and privacy glass. Other versions - including the new Swift Sport model add features such as alloy wheels, smartphone links, auto air-con, auto transmission and even all-wheel-drive so to some extent you can tailor models to your specific needs. My test model was a flagship SZ5 with a 1.0 litre 110 hp Boosterjet engine and five-speed manual gearbox, priced at €17,122 (£15,499). This perky yet economical engine has a top speed of 190 kph (118 mph), the 0-100 kph time is a nippy 10 seconds and fuel economy is 22.2 kpl (62.7 mpg). SZ5 specification includes sat-nav, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, rear parking camera, keyless entry and push-button start. This model also features Suzuki’s SVHS ‘mild hybrid’ system which gives sub-100 g/km emissions.

The system utilises a beltdriven combined generator and starter motor which assists acceleration and stores energy to help save fuel. The Swift has a larger interior thanks to slightly lowered seats boosting headroom and a longer wheelbase creates more rear passenger space. Seating is very comfortable and there is a good driving position with excellent visibility. Boot space is 265 litres (54 litres more than the previous model) and expandable to 579 litres by dropping the rear seats. On the road, Swift has smooth driving dynamics with a supple, comfortable ride, and is agile in traffic or when parking. It also has outstanding grip and handling thanks to well-balanced suspension and its lower wider road-stance. The Swift has a chic and charismatic look which helps it really stand out in the very competitive small-hatchback sector.

Premier League Preview

MANCHESTER CITY maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 2-1 victory over strugglers Newcastle. Guardiola’s side deservedly took the lead within the opening 10 minutes, through Raheem Sterling’s curling effort. But the home side missed clear-cut chances and were punished when striker Salomon Rondon set up DeAndre Yedlin to stroke home the equaliser before half-time. England full-back Kyle Walker came to City’s rescue with his first goal for the club, picking the ball up 30 yards out and drilling a low finish into the far corner of the net. City will host Fulham after the international break on September 15, while Newcastle will entertain Arsenal. Barca hit top gear LIONEL MESSI and Luis Suarez both scored twice as Barcelona hit eight goals past La Liga newcomers Huesca. The minnows took the lead through Watford loanee Cucho Hernandez, before the floodgates opened against them and they discovered how ruthless top flight football can be. Other scorers for the Catalan side were Pulido (og) Dembele, Rakitic and Alba as the champions moved level with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga with nine points from three games. Huesca will hope to salvage some pride against Rayo Vallecano on September 14, while Barca will travel to Real Sociedad on September 15. Karim Benzema and

missed a sitter, Sadio Mane poked home from close range. The Reds’ lead was doubled when Roberto Firmino timed his run on to James Milner’s corner perfectly, and headed powerfully past Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel. However, Liverpool’s €74 million keeper Alisson, who has already shown flashes of flair this season, tried to turn past Kelechi Iheanacho but was tackled and Rachid Ghezzal stroked home the ensuing cross. But Jurgen Klopp’s side closed out the win to stay top of the league and will travel to Tottenham on September 15, and Leicester face Bournemouth. Alexandre Lacazette’s powerful late winner proved the difference in Arsenal’s thrilling 3-2 win over Cardiff. Arsenal will be hosted by winless Newcastle United on September 15, while Cardiff will make their way to Chelsea.

BRILLIANT BARCA: The Catalan side celebrate another imperious display. Gareth Bale continued their good goalscoring form since Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit as Real Madrid beat Leganes 4-1 in La Liga. Bale’s powerful effort got Los Blancos on the board before Guido Carrillo equalised with a penalty. Benzema was in the mood though and his first was a header that was awarded by the video assistant referee, and he then blasted in his fifth goal in four games. A Ramos penalty completed the rout for Real, and they will head to Athletic Bilbao on September 15, while Leganes will entertain Villarreal on September 16. Maxi Gomez and Iago

Aspas scored to give Celta Vi g o a d e s e r v e d 2 - 0 w i n over Atletico Madrid, with a third ruled out by the video assistant referee. Atletico, who are being tipped by many for a strong title challenge, had Sefan Savic sent off on 70 minutes for a second yellow card. The runners-up last season have four points from three games, going into the international break. MARK CAVENDISH will miss the Tour of Britain and will take an indefinite break from racing due to the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus in his system. Cavendish’s team Dimension Data added in a statement that the former world champion had unknowingly been racing and training with the virus over the last few months. It was something that the 33 year-old Max rider was ‘glad’ to hear as it helped to explain why he had been struggling for form. Cavendish had an extremely difficult Tour de France last month, finishing well outside the time cut on stage 11, having struggled to compete at the business end of any of the sprint stages. That was on the back of a series of crashes and injuries that derailed the first half of his year.

WHEEL BLOW: Cavendish will take time out to completely recover.

The 30-year-old Tour stage winner was also forced to miss a chunk of last season after being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis - glandular fever - caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, and it has returned with cruel effects. Cavendish said: “This season I’ve not felt physically myself and despite showing good numbers on the bike I have felt that there’s something not right. “Given this and on the back of these medical results, I’m glad to now finally have some clarity as to why I haven’t been able to perform at my optimum level during this time. “I’m now looking forward to taking the time necessary in order to get back to 100 per cent fitness before then returning to racing again at peak physical condition.”
