Police put the brakes on Costa car ‘fraudsters’ By Simon Ward A REGION-WIDE fraud syndicate was exposed after seven people were arrested in three locations up and down the Costa. Their ruse was to allegedly buy top-end vehicles in Germany and, without paying any VAT, register them here in Spain to unsuspecting victims. Plans were thwarted after officers discovered a Guardamar del Segura company had registered two vehicles to one person and, only two days later, transferred them a second time to third parties. After a complex and extensive investigation over three months, it was found that the gang used stolen ID to forge signatures, falsified VAT paperwork and transferred vehicle ownership to people without their consent. This part of the operation was purely so that the unsuspecting ‘owners’ would be incriminated, once their ‘crime’ was discovered.
FRAUD: Company detected registering cars to the same person. The investigations uncovered the use of 12 high-end vehicles, estimating a total fraud of more than €48,800. Five Spanish men and two women (aged between 26 and 52) were arrested in Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm. Three of the 12 cars were recovered because they were still in possession of the fraudsters, while the remaining nine are fully identified and located, pending resolution by the Treasury Administration.
Shot dead

Paramedics were only able to certify the death of the middle-aged victim from a gunshot wound. Guardia Civil police have opened an investigation.

Mar Menor boost promised
AHEAD of next month’s elections, one politician has confirmed his commitment to promoting the Mar Menor. Partido Popular (PP) candidate, Teodoro Garcia, claimed his party would create a high commissioner position at a national level to represent the area. The politician said: “[We back] the creation of a high commissioner for the promotion and development of the Mar Menor, who will be appointed directly by the president of the government, because this natural, scenic and ecological jewel cannot depend on four municipalities or even one region.”

Junipers return to parks THE sensitive dune areas of La Mata and other Torrevieja parks have received a boost in the form of 50 juniper trees and other flora. The ‘Juniperus Macrocarpa’ species had previously been extinct in the province, after forming extensive forests across the Iberian sub-continent in the Middle Ages.
The planting was carried out to strengthen the recovery of the dune forests, facilitated by the Devesa-Albufera Service of the Valencia City Council (who provided the saplings), as well as the CIEF of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development and other local authorities.

HOLY WEEK: Processions are taking place across Spain.
Sign on the cross THIS picture shows members of a Catholic brotherhood in Cordoba with a representation of Jesus Christ, a common sight across Spain during Semana Santa which takes place this week. Semana Santa (Holy Week in English) takes place during the last week of Lent and coincides with Easter. Spain is famous the world over for its commemorations to mark the Bible story of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Each town and city is home to several religious brotherhoods who don
special costumes to take part in processions held throughout the week. Different brotherhoods wear different coloured robes - or nazarenos - to show which group they are members of. Processions took place on Palm Sunday and take place today on Holy Thursday, tomorrow on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The parades held are specific to the part of The Passion story remembered on that day. Processions throughout Spain all feature Pasos; elaborately-decorated floats depicting New Testament fig-

Processions in Andalucia have a celebratory atmosphere, particularly in the provinces of Granada, Malaga and Sevilla. Those in Castilla y Leon, particularly in the provinces of Camora and Valladolid, have a more sombre tone. The processions are accompanied by marching bands who play religious pieces, while marchers parade through the streets.

REPUBLIC CALL: Protests took place across Spain on Sunday.
By Joe Gerrard HUNDREDS of protesters demonstrated in Madrid and other cities in Spain on Sunday for a third republic on the 88th anniversary of the pre-Civil War state’s founding. Those protesting carried the red, yellow and purple tricolour flag flown during the days of the Second Republic which was founded on April 14, 1931. The republic was overthrown in 1939 when former dictator Francisco Franco defeated loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Demonstrators in Madrid gathered at the Puerta del Sol where the Second Republic was proclaimed 88 years to the day following King Alfonso XIII’s abdication. Protesters, who were joined by members of the leftist Podemos and Izquierda Unida (IU) parties, called for the monarchy to be abolished. Some marched under the slogan: ‘For labour, political and social rights, down with the monarchy, long live the Republic.’ Others carried placards criticising the ‘regime of ‘78,’ or restoration of the monarchy and creation of the modern Spanish state after the death of Franco in 1975. Some marched in favour of feminism, while others demonstrated against the influence of big business in politics. Demonstrations also took place in Cordoba, Guadalajara, Jerez, Oviedo, Pamplona, Valencia, Vigo and Zaragoza.

Left out of middle class
MISSING OUT: Millennials are finding it harder to enter the middle class.
by Joe Gerrard HALF of those born in Spain between 1983 and 2002 entered the middle class when they reached 20, compared to 60 per cent of baby boomers, a study has found. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found the millennial generation in Spain were increasingly being shut out of the middle class. The international development body said a rise in the costs of housing, education and healthcare was leading to a shrinking middle-class. The OECD has called for governments to step in to re-
verse a trend which it said was happening across the world. About 60 per cent of those born between 1942 and 1964, members of the so-called ‘baby boom’ generation, were middle-class by age 20. The equivalent figure for ‘Generation X,’ those born between 1965 and 1982, was 58 per cent. The proportion dropped to 50 per cent for those born between 1983 and 2002, according to the OECD. The OECD defined a middle-class family as one earning between 75 per cent and 200 per cent of the average yearly salary, between €11,450 and €30,542 in Spain’s case.

The president accused Assange of hacking into computer accounts and private phones and of leaking private pictures of himself and his family online. Assange is wanted in the US in connection with the leak of hundreds of thousands of documents related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Swedish prosecutors also sought his extradition over an alleged sexual assault but they dropped their case after Assange was granted diplomatic asylum.

GROWING: Spain’s population went up by 0.6 per cent in 2018.
Population soars SPAIN’S population has reached 47 million for the first time since 2013 and immigrations have helped keep it on the rise, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Figures from the INE’s population register showed Spain’s population grew by 0.6 per cent in 2018, the third year in which the number of people has risen.
The arrival of more than 290,570 immigrations more than cancelled out a decline of 6,186 in the native population, INE data showed. Spanish nationals make up 89.3 per cent of the population compared to 5,025,264 foreign-born people living as residents in the country who make up the remaining 10.7 per cent. A total of 1.8 million for-
eign residents are from the EU while the rest came from elsewhere, according to the INE. The three largest non-Spanish groups were Moroccans at 812,412, Romanians at 669,434 and the British at 249,015. It comes as previous INE figures showed Spain’s birth rate during the first half of 2018 was the lowest since records began in 1941.

BREXIT BRIEF
Tourism holds BRITAIN and Spain remain popular destinations for travellers from either country despite Brexit, industry data has shown. Spending from British travellers has grown by 5.4 per cent so far this year compared to 2018, according to figures from the Exceltur industry association. Data from the Hosteltur hotel body showed the number of bookings made for Easter week has risen by 12 per cent compared to last April. The Costa Blanca’s HOSBEC industry association’s figures showed the number of reservations made by British holidaymakers in Benidorm grew by 7 per cent year-on-year in the second half of March. “The British are returning positive figures despite uncertainty over Brexit,” the association said. British travellers are still the biggest single nonSpanish group of holidaymakers in Benidorm, the same data showed. They accounted for 42.7 per cent of all overnight stays in the second half of March, HOSBEC said. The figures follow a push from the Costa Blanca tourism industry and authorities to draw British travellers during this spring. HOSBEC said in February the industry believed bookings from British travellers would pick back up once the factors causing Brexit uncertainty were resolved.
Furth By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister narrowly avoided a nodeal Brexit last week after securing an 11th-hour extension to the withdrawal date, giving her and Westminster until October 31 to pass a deal. Theresa May secured the six-month extension after meeting with leaders from the EU27 in Brussels. Together they struck a compromise between May’s request for a short extension and Brussels officials including EU Council President Donald Tusk’s call for a year-long delay. The agreement, dubbed a ‘flextension,’ allows lawmakers in London time to come to a consensus on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal. Britain will be able to leave the EU if a deal is passed before the deadline. But an EU summit will be held in June to monitor Britain’s behaviour after leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns it could undermine EU business going forward. Tusk called on MPs not to ‘waste time,’ between now and October. May said: “We must now press on at pace with our efforts to reach a consensus on a deal which is in the national interest.” Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez said the extension was the best possible outcome of the

Campaigns kick By Joe Gerrard THE official window for general election campaigning has now opened, following a lively precampaign phase which saw parties set out their stalls to voters. The official period for campaigning began on Friday. Posters have now gone up in towns and cities across the country and party leaders are currently on the trail to galvanise their support bases and win over undecided voters. The talking points have broadly fallen along a left-right divide with some cross over and exchange between the two. All parties have released detailed manifestos featuring policies on education, the economy, healthcare, defence, foreign policy and social issues and others. But a small number of points have made it to the fore. Key talking points for the left have centred around social and

The leftist Podemos has emphasised the similar issues. Speaking

PSOE and Podemos both reportedly have a pact to avoid criticising each other on the campaign trail, likely in preparation for postelection coalition wrangling. k off the Spanish economy to private business and financial control. All parties on the right have made cuts to taxes and deregulation a part of the latter issue. The conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox have each tried to convince right-wing voters they are best able to deliver their vision for Spain. The PP has made that appeal a central part of its broader electoral strategy. Campaign videos have told voters considering backing Vox that their ballots would be wasted because of the way votes are allocated for the Congress of Deputies, favouring more established groups. Ciudadanos has slightly departed from free market orthodoxy. Leader Albert Rivera has proposed easing pressure on businesses while curbing temporary work contracts and offering more state aid for families.
Profile: Regional parties WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote. When voters cross their ballots, not only in the general election but also for local, regional and European polls in May, there will be region-specific parties standing. Regional parties vary in ideology, policy platforms and purpose. Cataluùa and the Basque Country are both home to nationalist and pro-independence groups, but there are others who stand to campaign on issues which are particular to a given region. Coalicio Compromis stand exclusively in the Valencia Region. They espouse left-wing, environmental and Valencian regional positions including promoting its language and is currently part of the governing coalition in the Corts Valencianes assembly. Mallorca is home to the Mes per Mallorca and the Proposta per les Illes party. The former is on the left while the latter lies in the political centre and both have a handful of seats in the Balearic Islands Assembly. Mad about motoring? WHETHER you’re a car enthusiast or rely on your car for just about everything, keeping your vehicle on the road is a costly endeavour. Prices for car insurance can vary greatly between providers depending on different risk factors. While reducing your annual mileage and keeping your car in a secure location will help keep your premiums down, Linea Directa recommend shopping around for insurance quotes to get the best possible price with the best possible cover. Minor car problems At this time of the year in the early morning sunshine, condensation is troublesome, especially in older vehicles. Motorists and other road users are at risk. Accidents can be caused when drivers try to wipe down the windscreen. Here are some handy tips to help you tackle condensation: Wash your car regularly as dirt and dust attract moisture and early morning dew. Remove any damp items like towels or coats from inside the car. When safe to do so, leave the windows open for a few hours. Switch on the air conditioning and wipe down the inside of the windows. Fill a sock with cat litter and place it in your
car to help absorb excess moisture. But what if it doesn’t start? A flat battery is a great inconvenience; jumpstarting your car from the roadside can be hazardous and new batteries are expensive and can be troublesome to fit. These tips can help prolong the life of your battery. Keep the terminals clean of residue which builds up over time. And remember to turn off air conditioning, lights, radio and other battery draining systems whenever possible. Help is at hand Linea Directa offers service, support and 24hour roadside assistance to over three million customers in Spain. The two made a video before her death in which Carrasco confirmed she was of sound mind and wanted to die after living with a chronic motor condition for 30 years. The video showed her barely able to move or talk. But the judge investigating the case has now said it will be passed onto a gender violence court because it is out of her court’s jurisdiction. Hernandez told Spanish media: “I am a militant feminist and this is an insult. I will not accept being told

On verge of extinction EXPERTS are warning that Spain’s rarest bird could soon disappear from its last Andalucian strongholds in Granada and Almeria Researcher from the University of Madrid, Juan Traba has exposed the ‘delicate situation,’ in which the Chersophilus duponti (Dupont’s Lark) is found in Andalucia, since it only lives in four enclaves: Granada (Lomadel Padul) and Almeria (Cabo de Gata, Sierra de Gádor and Tabernas-Sorbas). The last 10 years has seen a population decline of 66.8 per cent, putting it close to extinction in the region. According to the last census in 2018, there are only 15 males of the species left in Andalucia. It is estimated that the species could disappear from Andalucia in five to 10 years ‘putting an end to the presence of one of the most emblematic and exclusive birds of the natural Andalucian steppes.’ The cause of the birds’ decline is put down to the destruction and ploughing of natural woodland in the region in favour of intensive olive and almond cultivation, plus the con-

CELEBRATING HISTORY: Borrell (centre, left) was speaking at the presentation of Spain, A Global History.
Co-existence is the key to success SPAIN will only succeed as a country if it can overcome regional tensions and division and offer a positive vision of co-existence, the country’s foreign minister has said. Josep Borrell claimed the narrative about Spain and Spanish history had been captured by nationalists both regionally and at a country-wide level who are on the ‘wrong side of history.’ Spain has not had anyone capable of writing its story in terms of its positive contribution to the world, the minister added. He was speaking at the presentation of a new book by diplomat Luis Francisco Martinez
Montes called Spain, A Global History. Martinez Montes’ book comes as part of a Foreign Ministry strategy to promote Spain’s image abroad. It discusses the country’s contribution to a host of areas including religion, language and economics. Borrell said the book was not an exercise in ‘vainglory,’ but was a celebration of the country’s achievements throughout its history. Spain needed to counter a ‘premodern’ and ‘authoritarian’ image pushed by critics following the 2008 recession, the eurozone crisis and more recently the Catalan independence row, Borrell said.

MONEY SPINNER: Game of Thrones production spent €15m in Spain. SHOOTING of TV series Game of Thrones brought €15 million of direct investment to Spain. But it is expected the economy will benefit by many million more in the coming years as fans of the series visit the country to view the locations used. The eighth and final blockbuster series was filmed in locations around the world, with Spain once more being fea-
tured heavily including the Sevillian town of Osuna where filming continued for 15 days. Some 650 extras were taken on, with a total of 1,000 people working on the film in that time. This boosted the town’s economy for those days, and now a tourism boom is expected for the usually sleepy municipality. Spain is becoming increas-
ingly attractive for filming thanks to the improved tax and economic advantages offered to production companies. Mainland Spain offers a tax incentive to international filming in the form of a tax rebate of between 15 per cent and 25 per cent (up to €5 million) depending on the autonomous community. The Canaries offer tax breaks of up to 40 per cent.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million. This information is for guidance only, and should not be taken as legal advice. If in any doubt, seek professional help.

CLIMATE CHARGE: Greenpeace unveiled the bill in Madrid.
A giant bill By Joe Gerrard GREENPEACE has hung a giant bill on a Madrid skyscraper to raise awareness of what they claimed was the price of political and corporate inaction on climate change. The environmental NGO hung the 300-metre high banner on the side of one of the Colon towers in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Inaction from politicians and corporations has racked up an environmental and social bill which will ultimately have to be paid by the people, Greenpeace said. “They are
costing us our lives, they are costing us the planet. And we are not going to pay the bill, Greenpeace said. “The bad practices of large companies and current policies not only destroys the environment, but also creates an increasingly unequal society with fewer rights, the NGO added. Greenpeace’s protest comes as demonstrations against climate change have stepped up in recent months. Spanish school pupils have repeatedly joined hundreds of thousands of others from around the world in striking from lessons every Friday in protest against pollution.

By Joe Gerrard forecasted. The EU requires eurozone countries to keep their deficits below 3 per cent of GDP. It comes as the 2019 deficit was targeted at 1.8 per cent in October. The IMF said then that ‘credible’ measures would be needed to bring the deficit down. The international lending body said the forecasts were based in part on predictions that economic growth will slow in Spain and elsewhere in the coming years. Spain’s national debt will fall
gradually in GDP percentage terms from 96 per cent this year to 95 per cent in 2020 and 93 per cent by 2023. The equivalent average figures for the eurozone are expected to be 83.6 per cent this year and 81.8 per cent in 2020. Spain is second to Italy in terms of eurozone countries with the highest national debt as a percentage of GDP. The IMF said it based its forecasts for Spain on budget plans drawn up by the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) last year and other measures approved since.
SPANISH government ministers have approved funding worth €452 million to support small and medium-sized companies. Industry Minister Reyes Maroto, who announced the measures last week ahead of their approval, said the package would be split into three parts. Almost €96 million will be available for young entrepreneurs, €50 million will go to boosting overseas trade for companies and €307 million will help with energy efficiency. Maroto said: “These measures seek to eliminate obstacles to small business growth and international expansion.”

The EWN team take their hats off to our advertisers and loyal readers PUBLISHERS Michel and Steven Euesden are incredibly proud and excited to be celebrating two decades at the heart of the community in southern Spain, reporting the news while supporting worthy causes and initiatives. All week, the EWN Head Office has been awash with colour, balloons and festivities to mark the 20-year milestone, an achievement which reflects the passion and professionalism behind the most successful English language publication in Spain. The sheer determination and dynamic work ethic of EWN Publishers Michel and Steven Euesden has proved to be the impressively base winning formula which has seen the EWN Media Group (EWNMG) empire continue to thrive.
The Euesdens arrived in Spain in 1996, both armed with enviable records in publishing sales, an inspirational hunger for success and a vision for the future. Michel said: “We never discussed that we would start the EWN together, but we knew that working together as a team would produce the greatest product.” And that is exactly what the Euesdens have done, firstly with The Entertainer on April 17, 1999, and rebranding to launch Euro Weekly News in 2002. For two decades, Michel and Steven have steered EWN and its loyal and hard-working team of staff to the dizzy heights of Europe’s largest free
The glamour of film OVER the past 20 years we have seen many changes in Spain, and also witnessed how it has grown with the help of expats. The country has benefited in many ways both economically and culturally. A great example of the latter is the Marbella International Film Festival (MIFF). Set up in 2006 it has showcased the work of some of the most exciting international talent in the ‘alternative’ film world, and brought tremendous publicity to Spain. The EWN is proud to have been closely associated with MIFF as official media partners. It has given us the opportunity to highlight the fantastic work done by the festival in encouraging worldwide talent to grow and develop. At the heart of its success is Mac Chakaveh who is the brain behind the event who has grown MIFF from relatively small beginnings into the major festival it is today much as the EWN has grown into being the biggest English language newspaper group in Spain.

local newspaper publisher in English. Each week, more than half a million expatriate and local readers enjoy the six award-winning EWN titles throughout southern Spain and in Mallorca. Michel added: “Despite stiff competition, a global recession, plus the ongoing ramifications of Britain’s EU exit, our mandate throughout has been to better serve advertisers and readers while continuing to expand. “We look forward to being able to serve with the same love and passion in the future.”

IT may be old now, but the E u ro We e k l y N e w s w a s once young too! When it was set up it started with a core set of values which remain at its h e a r t t o d a y. I t s f o u n d i n g mission was to deliver the Spanish news to the expatriate community in a nonsensationalist, easy to read and informative manner. To be the voice of expats it needed to be very much at the heart of the community. As part of its ethos the EWN has down the years supported many events and charities, large and small, and this is something it continues to do, especially for dynamic new causes

The club aims to help people leave a legacy, whether it be in the business world, charitable causes or even something more personal. What both these events have in common is that they bring together people from all parts of the expat community who want to make a real difference -just like the EWN always has.
ONE beneficiary of Euro Weekly News during its history was Leo Bermejo, who died from a rare form of cancer despite a fundraising effort and campaign on his behalf. Many readers will remember Leo by his nickname Leo the Lion. The boy, from Vera Playa in Almeria Province, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer in September 2015. Leo’s family contacted Euro Weekly News in January 2017 when he was aged four shortly after he had several tumours removed. Leo’s mother Karen Keefe said they aimed to raise €176,000 so Leo could travel to the US for pioneering treatment which they hoped would rid him of the illness. Euro Weekly News journalists soon got to work on raising awareness for the four-year-old’s plight. More than €75,000 was raised for Leo in eight days, in part thanks to our publicity and efforts on the ground from Almeria Sales Manager Jackie Butcher. Attention from the public soon followed. Former Real Madrid defender Leo Bermejo, who shared a love of football with the four-year-old as well as a name, retweeted a Euro Weekly News Twitter post calling for help. By May 2017 Leo had flown to the US and completed his proton therapy treatment. He was welcomed back in Almeria on Sunday May 7. But an MRI scan in September of that year showed the tumours were once again growing. An urgent appeal for more support, including for a dedicated private nurse, was made with the help of Euro Weekly News in November. But it was not enough and weeks later, on Friday December 1, Leo passed away days before his fifth birthday. His last words were: “I love you.” Karen told Euro Weekly News after Leo’s passing that she was grateful for the support she had received. She added this newspaper’s publicity had helped to show the true face of cancer in children.
COURAGEOUS: Leo ‘the Lion’ Bermejo and sister Sofia while the four-year-old battled cancer.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONCE again, it appears strangely coincidental that a subject I chose in a previous column seems to manifest on a wider scale the following week. In the last blurb, I wrote about the pathetic retributions being passed on by our so-called Judges. Well this past week, one of those judgements truly did take the whole tin. It concerned the case of the Turkish born toerag who has apparently been fighting deportation for some five years. This man is a violent criminal, who has never applied for citizenship, and over the years, has been convicted of robbery, criminal damage, burglary, assault and shoplifting. In 2016 a judge decided because he had become the member of a notorious North London gang, he had (wait for it) ‘integrated well, into a part of UK society.’ The judge decided this made him a ‘home-grown criminal’ and allowed him to stay. (I defy anyone to make that one up!). In a series of immigration appeals his blood- sucking lawyers have cost the British taxpayers untold thousands of pounds. And he’s still here - awaiting yet another public purse draining appeal. Sometime I truly do lose the will to live. What with the Brexit fiasco and judgements like this, is it any wonder our once proud British nation has become the laughing stock of the world? If we’d had this lot of ‘do gooders’ and pathetic politi-

Questionable judgements
LAUGHING STOCK: Pathetic retributions by judges? cians in 1939, the whole population would have been under the jackboot of the Nazis by 1940! Another so-called ‘judgement’ also caught the ol’ boy’s eye this week. A serial drink-driver was ‘given a chance’ by Judge Sarah Buckingham,
even after the accused had crashed into three other vehicles and needed rescuing from her own blazing car. This was her third offence and she admitted to dangerous driving while three times over the limit. It wasn’t even the judge’s almost
unbelievable decision to give her another chance it was actually her reason for doing so. She was deferring sentence for three months, she said, to see if the defendant could address her issues ‘because she was a woman.’ ‘Had Miss Parry been a man,’ the judge added; ‘it would have been straight down the stairs.’ Hold on a minute, is that not a more blatant case of sexism than you would ever be likely to hear? Can you imagine the scream up if she had told a man that if he were a woman, he would have been immediately incarcerated? Loose Women would have had a field day. The roads to Westminster would have been jammed with Boadicea lookalikes and men would be going without their dinner or sexual favours for weeks. As it is I have yet to see one protest from the poor beleaguered males of the populace. Come on fellas you can’t all have become transgenders. Oh, I dunno, the way things are going, it may not be a bad idea! Delighted and indeed honoured to have been included on the latest CD release of Dreamboats and Petticoats. Truly illustrious co-artists on this very popular and prestigious series of compilations. On sale now folks. Keep the Faith, Love, Leapy. Leapylee2002@gmail.com.

HAVE you heard about Daniel Mallory (aka AJ Finn), best-selling author of The Woman in the Window who made up a life for himself? His lies include his parents’ deaths, his brother’s suicide, fake qualifications and, most elaborately, his own terminal brain cancer. Wow! Many people invent things about themselves to appear more interesting. Mallory writes fiction and has made himself a work of fiction. Nonetheless, it’s a fitting parable for our times. The line between reality and makebelieve gets more blurred by the day. Newspapers report on ‘celebrities’ only famous for being famous. Soap operas are described breathlessly as if they were real. Pop stars give themselves gangster names and are then arrested for real crimes. But hang on, didn’t Agatha Christie pretend to go missing and create a news story? Wasn’t Walter Scott playing his public by writing pseudonymously as The Author of Waverley? And didn’t Ernest Hemingway fictionalise his own life? Fiction writers make things up... a bit like MPs. Betrayal, the latest in my own psychological crime thriller series, focuses on Nick Lawrence who likewise invents a new life for

The truth is stranger - and far darker - than fiction Deadly secrets AFTER 15 years in Canada, successful businessman Nick Lawrence returns to the village where he grew up and was acquitted of a gruesome murder. But he is confronted with all the people from a past life who can’t and won’t forgive him; including his own family. His return stirs up old memories and new hostilities, reopening old wounds, dredging up long forgotten secrets. But his girlfriend’s murder is only the first in several apparently unconnected crimes. Detective Inspector Barbara Forster, heading the cold case investigation, pursues a treacherous path in this action-packed thriller filled with twists and turns, intrigue and danger, about a young man trying to unravel the mystery of a family tragedy - a quest with an unexpected and shocking revelation. Highly recommended for anyone who likes mystery/crime/psychological thrillers.
himself in Canada with a brand new name and background following his acquittal of the murder of his girlfriend Emily years earlier. Returning home to rescue a failing company owned by Emily’s father who is determined to prove he was guilty all along, Nick decides to finally clear his name. But the past has not been forgotten. His arrival tears old wounds apart and new conflicts arise in this taut tale of wrecked lives, family tragedy and moral consequences; how one incident can cause ripples throughout years and decades, and how someone at the centre of that incident can have such a dramatic effect on those left to pick up the pieces. A man who pleaded innocent, but is still judged by society. A gripping crime thriller with a final, shocking double twist which ultimately forces you to question everything in this coldly harrowing exposé of one man’s battle with guilt and betrayal, revenge and redemption. Nora Johnson’s other psychological crime thrillers ‘The Girl in the Woods,’ ‘The Girl in the Red Dress,’ ‘No Way Back,’ ‘Landscape of Lies,’ ‘Retribution,’ ‘Soul Stealer,’ ‘The De Clerambault Code’ (www.nora-johnson.net) available from Amazon in paperback/eBook (€0.99;£0.99) and iBookstore. Can he refuse to pay? AT our community AGM they advised us that the garage needs to be refurbished inside and that quotes would be obtained. I objected, but it was passed by a majority vote. My argument is that I do not have a parking place or one of the storage rooms, but they say it is a community area. The parking and storage rooms have in the past been sold off by some of the residents to outsiders. My property did not come with a garage so why should I have to pay for its upkeep? What’s worse, is my share of the cost is eight times more than someone who only has a parking place. Have I got any rights not to contribute? TC (Costa del Sol) If the work is David Searl not ‘necesYou and the Law s a r y, ’ a n d t h e a s s e s s in Spain ment comes to more than three months of your community fees, the Horizontal Law says you can refuse to pay it. In your specific case, the charge is clearly unfair, as well. As a note, if the garage and storage rooms are community property, the holders cannot ‘sell’ them.

Don’t listen to sat nav Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man
still giving directions so ‘it’ wasn’t lost but I sure was. It had been raining and the track was seriously muddy and the car was getting pulled into tractor tracks. Yeah, I know you are thinking ‘idiot, w h y d id you go on the tra c k in firs t place?’ Well I honestly thought Google maps wouldn’t take me into such a place. When my car sat nav runs out of road it just tells you to find a proper road. But Google maps now tells me to turn right, then sharp right again which makes me think I’m going back on myself. Not to make it even scarier, this mud track is even narrower and there is a river on one side with no wall or barrier. The car was sliding all over the place and Mrs S now insists on getting out of the car and walking. Her theory was that if the car goes into the river there is no point in us both dying - she can get help. So thoughtful. Then at last we see a motorway again and the amazing thing is this mud track does bring you right up to the side of the shopping centre! So here’s the moral of the tale. DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR SAT NAV IF IT STARTS TO TAKE YOU OFF ROAD! It’s just being a clever dick trying to prove ‘you may be lost but I’m not!’
THE horror journey home from Sevilla: We decided to stop at a shopping centre. My car ’s sat nav couldn’t find it so I then used Google maps on my ‘phone. All was fine and we even saw a motorway sign that we were going in the right direction. Then the nightmare started. I took a wrong turning and the ‘phone recalculated the route taking us down a road that was running parallel to the motorway. We then came to a no entry sign and I had to turn left which was a narrower road but I’m thinking Google maps must know what it was doing. Oh boy was I wrong! The road all of a sudden became a very narrow mud track so I couldn’t turn round. I thought it was only going to run for a few yards and then the App was telling me to take the next left which I thought would take me back on to a ‘proper road’ but it didn’t. All I could see was fields! How could my Google maps take me here? It was mikesenker@gmail.com.

FOR NEXT 7 DAYS AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) You realise this week how liberating it is to share your thoughts and feelings with someone close. It is not always easy to do this, until you realise everyone has them. Some hopes and dreams are more attainable than others, of course, and someone has to find out which are which. Avoid being too critical of someone young and inexperienced.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Time is precious this week because you are in demand. A chance lost in the past presents itself again but won’t be too easy. Holding back just a little makes you more desirable. A want to travel could be cramped by financial considerations. If making extra money is too difficult, consider sharing something of value with someone else.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) After a relaxed weekend, it might prove difficult to take up the reins of work again. However, midweek sees you trotting along happily and minding your own business when someone stops you in your tracks. When a challenge is issued, your natural stubbornness comes to the fore.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) With a mind as sharp as a needle, you spin through the week, weaving your own charming spell. A bit of extra confidence works wonders for your mood. Something that you read sets you thinking about doing some writing or creating something artistic, perhaps even a musical.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Although energy is not high, there is the need to have some kind of challenge. With the brain active, it is an ideal time to plot and plan your next moves. Maybe something that has been delayed might now be advanced. You find it hard to choose between opportunities. The road ahead is open. Keeping things simple is best.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The imagination stirs and the heart races at a suggestion this week. Your strong intuition tells you it is the right thing to do. You are a constant friend, but such an adventure may mean an absence from someone close.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Reading the small print or being sure what is offered in a personal encounter is most important this week. Leave nothing to chance or you could be out of pocket. When discussing the future with someone close, you are expected to take the lead.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Being over-generous with cash midweek could see you making a poor move. Perhaps someone needs to be more hardworking or perhaps less of a spendthrift. Propping up a bad habit would be doing them no favours. There are doubts in your mind about a family holiday.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) A suggestion made by you recently did not seem to be taken seriously. This week, however, negotiations could be opened. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) An emotional cut-off from the past is not as bad as anticipated. Indeed, it confirms in your mind who you are and what your place in the world is. Inherited traits knit easily with your present life and bring contentment. All that you want to change at the moment are certain things round you that have been outgrown.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) An investment made recently is built upon and brings peace of mind. Finances do need consideration but more in the long than the short-term. Much is happening in the background that does not require your attention but, all the same, be aware. Life may be like a game of chess, but this week if you turn your back an opponent may cheat.

THERE is a lot of confusion over registering on the Padron. To do so one must be habitually resident in the town, so that excludes holiday home owners. I know for many years some town halls have turned a blind eye or even encouraged such registration. The municipality get financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and government authorities for the provision of services. Until a few years ago the Padron registration was valid until cancelled by the named person. However, now EU Nationals must renew their registration every five years, non EU nationals every two years. Elaine Gonzales
Deplorable shelter I WAS so disgusted to read about the dog kennels in Malaga which was said to have kept 80 dogs in just 16 small enclosures. Well done to the Guardia Civil for raiding this ‘shelter’ and cracking down on negligent animal ownership. It is important for everyone to keep an eye out for potential animal abuse and not be afraid to report anything if genuinely concerned over an animal’s well-being. Belinda Porter
Fact checking REGARDING a letter concerning the theft of an EU Citizen’s Registration certificate (green paper) in your previous edition. The writer complained that having reported the theft in Barcelona, upon applying for a replacement they had problems because the report (denuncia) did not show that the certificate had been stolen. Whilst inconvenient to the writer it should be apparent that a crime report showing just a synopsis of what was stolen cannot be used as proof that a specific item was stolen. In this case the EU Citizen Registration Cert. The set fee, currently, to replace a certificate is €12, whether that is because of loss, theft, change of address etc. Julian Ward
Mood change A TRULY brilliant piece Leapy Lee and so on the mark. I am a retired Brit living in Germany, who left Spain after 15 years, and who has become so disenchanted with our UK government and scare-mongering UK press. People misguidedly talk of the need for a second referendum which shows how little they understand the democratic process. The vote was the vote and the result was the result. What is, in my view, important is to leave the EU with a deal that protects the rights of the individuals and trade which in turn will protect jobs for those still needing to work and health care for those relying on the Department of Works and Pension (DWP). FREAK CRASH: The crash took place in Malaga City.
‘Horror’ at smash I WAS horrified to see the photos in last week’s Euro Weekly News of the bus which smashed into nine cars in Malaga after its driver had a heart attack. It is so lucky that no one was injured, although I still feel sorry for pedestrians and owners of the cars which were hit as the incident must have come as quite a shock. You reported that the driver had previously undergone a medical test. This incident is a stark reminder that despite medical checks and restrictions for some suffering from particular conditions, these are never any guarantees about safety behind the wheel. OPINION & COMMENT
OUR VIEW Ensuring opportunity A NEW study which showed fewer millennials are making it into Spain’s middle class compared to previous generations makes for worrying reading. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found half of those born between 1983 and 2002 have or will make it into the middle class by age 20. The equivalent figure for ‘baby boomers,’ those born between 1942 and 1964, was 60 per cent. All governments champion economic prosperity and their commitment to it is shown by the enthusiasm of officials to cite Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures among others. But ensuring a country is rich is half the battle. The key to true prosperity is making sure that wealth reaches as many people as possible. Good, well-funded education for the young and quality jobs for them once they leave school is a crucial part of this. Not only does it benefit them, but it ensures public coffers are furnished with adequate tax revenue to spend for the benefit of us all. This virtuous cycle, known as the ‘multiplier effect’ in economics, can break and become a vicious one if wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. An EU study found a lack of opportunities during the last recession saw 133,000 highly-skilled workers leave Spain from 2007 to 2017. If such workers leave they take their talents with them and deprive the public purse and society with the means of making economic improvements. Once established, that vicious cycle is hard to break.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrested by police in London I sincerely urge the UK Home Secretary to extradite Julian Assange to Sweden but not to the USA. Here’s why. Two Swedish women accused him of rape and other sexual offences following a Wikileaks conference in Stockholm in 2010. The accusations lapsed by time limit while he was hiding from justice in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. One of the women is seeking to reopen her case against him. She should have priority over the USA’s entirely politically motivated extradition request. Why do I say it is politically motivated? Because the US authorities are hopping mad that Wikileaks revealed some of the terrible atrocities committed by US military personnel in Iraq. I have seen the appalling helicopter cockpit video showing US airmen slaughtering innocent civilians who were only trying to get medical treatment for a badly injured civilian. I have read the truth about the attempted US cover up of this and other war crimes committed by the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Wikileaks had not existed, we would know nothing. We need the likes of Wikileaks to hold renegade governments to account. Donald Trump is now saying he knows nothing about Wikileaks. He says it’s not his thing. Well, he would, wouldn’t he? The BBC website has footage of nu-
merous Trump rallies where he praised Wikileaks time and time again when he was running for president. It suited him then. It doesn’t suit him now, surprise, surprise. Justice should prevail. Genuine Swedish justice that is, not the Trumped up charges (pardon the pun) coming out of the corrupt Trump White House. Brian

A way of life Kate Broadhead Health and Lifestyle coach CHANGING the way you eat should never be a short-term fix. If you lose it quickly, you’ll put it back on equally as fast, sometimes with interest. Carb cycling is for life. A long-term plan, designed to fit with all eventualities and you should never ever feel like you are on a ‘diet.’ Carb cycling allows you to eat the food you love, in moderation. If you desperately want a certain meal, snack or treat, simply build it into your week and plan your other meals around it. Losing weight should be a slow, steady process, which mirrors the length of time you took to put the weight on in the first place. A healthy weight loss rate could be as little as 1lb a week. Patience is the key here! Some people can lose large amounts drastically in the first couple of weeks, but
QUICK FIX: A short-term diet is bad for your metabolism. this is generally ‘water weight’ which not everyone will have. Fad diets can ruin your metabolism for good. Swapping from one diet to the other can have long-lasting effects on your body and you’ll wonder why even tried and tested methods in the past, now don’t work for you any more. This often leads to people practically starving themselves as they feel they have run out of options. Food supplements, pills, magic cof-
fee… the list goes on and on. The military diet for example which primarily consists of grapefruit, eggs and vanilla ice cream. Who can eat like that forever? Certainly not me! Reducing appearance of wrinkles naturally DELAYING wrinkles for as long as possible can simply be a matter of good habits. The basic recommendations include using appropriate protection from the sun, not smoking, not drinking too much and never sleeping with make-up on. It is also important to moisturise, hydrate and -claim some health professionals - feed the skin with antioxidants. Sleep is vital. A survey showed that after five nights of poor sleep, participants had up to double the amount of fine lines and wrinkles and a lot more brown spots than those getting a good night’s rest. Sleeping face-down or face-side on the pillow over a long period of time can also cause the skin to wrinkle. It is recommended to sleep on your back. Getting more vitamin C may help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A study of 4,000 women carried out in 2007 found that those who had higher intakes of vitamin C had lower levels of wrinkles and dryness. Another major source of skin problems is thought to be stress.

Meet the challenge of selling SELLING your home can be a challenge, so it is always best to get professional help and advice from an experienced and qualified estate agent. They will tell you that yes, you should make your home more appealing to potential buyers, but it is worth taking into account several factors when buying your home to start with, to ensure it is appealing for a later resale. One factor to take into account when buying a home is location, meaning the community which surrounds the home. For sellers as well as buyers, it’s important to highlight the benefits of living in a particular community. After all, neighbourhoods will have an enormous impact on the future buyer’s living experience. There’s a growing demand for homes located in walkable neighbourhoods. Fortunately in Spain the weather is usually pretty good too, so people are far more likely to enjoy a stroll to the shops than in the

ment options like movies, restaurants, and shopping. There’s also an appeal for easy access through reliable public transportation. In one recent survey, 55 per cent
of participants said they would gladly get a small house with a small garden if it meant easy access to stores, schools, and restaurants. Plus, a walkable neighbourhood
also significantly increases property values. So talk up the nearby community benefits which would entice potential buyers. Other favourable community amenities include bicycle paths, libraries and parks. These are great bonuses for neighbourhoods to attract fitness-minded individuals and promote a family-friendly atmosphere for buyers with children. Speaking of children, living in an excellent school district usually yields higher home values. According to a survey conducted by the Demand Institute, almost half of participants wanted a pet-friendly neighbourhood. In fact, this factor ranked higher than easy access to public transportation and even public schooling. Safety is a top concern for most home buyers, and there are things an owner can do to make their home safer. They may want to consider studying security features on neighbouring homes and adopt what they can, within reason.

YOU have finally done it. You have signed the deeds in front of a notary and you are now the proud possessor of a new apartment or house. Moving into a new home is an exciting time, and you’re probably daydreaming about decor and paint schemes and new furniture. But before you get into the fun stuff, there are some basics you should cov-
Moving into your new home er first. You may have been promised new locks have been fitted, but it is advisable that you can never be too careful. It’s worth the money to have the peace of mind which comes with knowing no-one else has the keys to
your home. Changing the locks can be a DIY project, or you can call in a locksmith for a little extra money. It’s good to get a fresh start with your floors before you start decorating. The previous owners may have had
pets, young children, or just plain old clumsiness. Take time to steam clean any carpets or rugs so your floors are free of stains and allergens. It’s easy and affordable to rent a steam cleaner. If the previous occupants wanted to

skip on some of their cleaning duties when they moved out, the kitchen is where they probably cut corners. Wipe down the inside of cabinets, clean out the refrigerator, the oven and the nooks and crannies underneath the appliances. Now you are ready to move in and make your new purchase a real family home!
Time to buy WHEN it becomes the time to make the decision whether to buy a home, how do you know it is the right thing to do? While everyone moves at their own pace, here are some signs you can use to determine if it is time to own your own home. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons you can use to justify your decision. If you plan on moving soon for a job or think you won’t be in town much longer, it may be better to rent. However, if you are thinking about living in the same town or district for years to come, it is time to put down roots. The stability which comes with home ownership may make you more prepared
for a marriage and/or a family if that is something you want. Those who have a steady job and know they have a stable salary may want to make the move to home ownership. As long as there aren’t any other major debts eating into your income, you can probably handle a mortgage and other costs associated with home ownership. The equity you build in your home can help you build wealth for the future if and when you want to retire. Your home may also make a great rental property in the future, which can help you diversify your portfolio and keep you solvent for years to come. You may have caught your-

THERE are currently 1.2 billion cars on the world’s roads, according to research from the Bernstein Institute which forecasts there will be two billion by 2040.
SPORTS carmaker Porsche has unveiled more details about the design of its new 911 Cabriolet. The German carmaker said the new model featured innovative lightweight components and had a lot to offer drivers. The body of the car itself will be made from a composite of different materials which cuts the weight of the shell by 7 per cent. Porsche said in a statement the materials and production used, defined the ideal connection technology of welding, bonding, clinching,

screw connections and others. “No less than 10 methods are involved in assembling the body of the new 911. “The body of the new 911 consists of a multimaterial mix and is thus taking the next big step in intelligent lightweight design,” the car maker said. “The 911 stays unwaveringly on course even when driven with a sporty driving style on sections of road with different surfaces,” Porsche added.
Designers achieved the weight reduction by creating a hybrid design in the A-pillar which guarantees a high degree of protection for drivers and passengers in the event the vehicle overturns. The changes, which have shaved 2.7 kilograms off the car ’s total weight, have also meant it has a more dynamic performance and handling. The composite material used consists
of three different elements. These are the Organo sheet, the die-cast ribs and the structural foam. Weigh-saving has also been achieved with a greater use of aluminium both in the 911 Coupe and Cabriolet models. The outer skin is now made entirely of aluminium and the new doors are made entirely of aluminium sheet. The changes also make production more efficient, Porsche said.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher ALTHOUGH Spanish car maker SEAT is part of the giant Volkswagen-Audi Group, the SEAT brand has always retained its own distinctive character, focussing on practical value for money cars with a touch of sporting flair. This character is evident even in the SEAT Mii, a hatchback city car which offers low running costs and everyday practicality. Mii prices start at €13,784 (£11,900), but for just a little more - €14,486 (£12,420) - you get the sports-styled five-door FR-

SEAT Mii FR-Line Line version which offers more power, larger alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension and eye-catching detailing such as aluminium kickplates on the door sills and FR badges and graphics. Power comes from a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine which has 72hp (the standard Mii has the same engine, but with 60hp) and it is a smooth refined unit which offers low emissions, just 97g/km, and excellent average fuel economy of 23.2kpl (65.7mpg). Its 0-100kph time is not that quick at 13.5 seconds, but the car is so nimble and easy to handle, you never really notice the lack of thrust. The car tops out at 172kph (107mph) which means it is still a relaxed drive at motorway speeds. The Mii has cool exterior styling and inside, the cabin is well-made and beautifully

simple, with most controls via a small central screen. There is good head and leg room for four adults, the boot space at 251 litres is adequate for normal needs and the floor is variable height to accommodate extra items. The rear seats also splitfold to increase space to a substantial 951 litres. Standard equipment includes radio, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity with dashboard-mounted phone holder, air-conditioning, and powered front windows. The Mii’s driving dynamics are very good. The car has a neat agile feel, precise steering and assured handling and composure. Even with the sports suspension on the test model, ride comfort was still excellent. The city hatchback sector is packed with contenders including the VW Up! and Skoda Citigo, both stablemates of the Mii and built on the same platform though with varying features and pricing. Other popular rivals include the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo. However, the Mii stands out in the class, offering a more youthful and cooler image than rivals which have more orthodox styling.

Rins takes honours in Austin SPANISH MotoGP fans can look forward to the next race in Jerez on May 5 with anticipation of a home battle after Alex Rins ended a sixyear winning streak in Texas for Marc Marquez. It was a surprise victory for the Suzuki rider - this was his first in MotoGP - with Marquez starting firm favourite after he had started from pole in Austin for the seventh year in succession. But Marquez made a rare mistake on the ninth lap when he lost control while leading by nearly four seconds. He slid off the track, then could not restart his Honda, leaving him out of the race. Rins still had to overhaul Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi who inherited the lead after Marquez’s crash and managed to hold on tenaciously. But on lap 17 (of 20) Rins swept past and went on to win by nearly half a second from Italian great Rossi. Australian Jack Miller had a good race in the non-works team Pramac Ducati to come in third, with Italian
WINNER Alex Rins swept to victory in Austin. Andrea Dovizioso fourth on a factory Ducati after starting from 13th on the grid. That was enough for Dovizioso to take the championship lead on 54 points with Rossi on 51 and Rins moving up to third on 49. Marquez has 45. This was Suzuki’s first MotoGP win since another Spaniard, Maverick Vinales, won the 2016 British Grand Prix.
AS hoped, the weekend’s biggest game produced a thriller as Sevilla and Real Betis shared five goals and lots of chances. Home team Sevilla came out on top 3-2 in one of the biggest derbys in Spain. Munir El Haddadi put them ahead with a 27th minute header, a score line which stood until Giovani Lo Celso equalised 10 minutes into the second half. It took just four minutes for Pablo Sarabia to restore the lead and then Fran Vazquez made it a two-goal lead after shooting home from the edge of the box on the 65th minute. It all looked settled, but Betis brought it back to 3-2

Thriller in Sevilla BANNED: Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa.
Foul mouthed Costa
GOAL: Pablo Sarabia restored Sevilla’s lead. through Cristian Tello’s free kick, leaving Sevilla to hang on for the last eight minutes. The result means Sevilla take over fourth place from Getafe who could only manage a 2-2 draw in another thriller against Valladolid after they lost Mathias Olivera to a red card in the 62nd minute. Valladolid dropped into the bottom three after Samuel Chukwueze scored the only goal of the game to give Villarreal a 1-0 win away to Girona.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid bounced back from their loss to Barcelona with a 2-0 win against Celta Vigo. Meanwhile, Barcelona could only scrape a 0-0 draw away to bottom placed Huesca having retained just one player (goalkeeper Ter Stegen) from the team that beat Atletico Madrid a week ago. Coach Ernesto Valverde opted to rest Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic before Tuesday night’s
Champions League tie at home to Manchester United. In total four rookies made their league debuts for the club - Jeison Murillo, Jean-Clair Todibo, Riqui Puig and Moussa Wague. Valencia kept themselves in the hunt for fourth spot after beating Levante 3-1 in another derby. Athletic Club Bilbao moved into seventh after beating Rayo Vallecano 3-2, while Espanyol beat Alaves 2-1.
ATLETICO MADRID’S bad boy striker Diego Costa’s season is over after he was banned for eight matches for a foul-mouthed rant at a referee. Costa, 30, lost his temper doing his side’s 2-0 loss to champions-in-waiting Barcelona on April 6. According to match referee Jesus Gil Manzano, the former Chelsea player used a Spanish phrase that alluded to defecating on his ‘whore mother.’ Manzano’s report to La Liga bosses went on to say that the Spanish international continued to swear and grabbed the official ‘on numerous occasions’ after he had been shown a red card. The ban, which will see Costa also miss the first game of next season, is the biggest in Spanish football since Pepe was hit with a 10-match punishment in 2009.
